- 0:31Speaker 2: life lessons and tips to help make you rich in life.
- 0:36Speaker 2: And welcome to a very special bonus episode. Today we
- 0:40Speaker 2: are talking the rich in life formula to travel.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, all of our best travel hacks. We've been to,
- 0:46Speaker 3: what countries have we been to together? So many.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We've been all through Europe, Hawaii, Bali, New York. Like
- 0:55Speaker 1: we've been on a lot of trips.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Of trips together, which very grateful for. But I feel
- 1:00Speaker 3: like we have collated a lot of tips, hacks, hindsight
- 1:07Speaker 3: life lessons that we made the mistakes so you don't
- 1:10Speaker 3: have to.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And also like some fresh ones that we've never spoken
- 1:13Speaker 2: about on the show before.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah. So we've got like a bit, some that are
- 1:17Speaker 3: a bit of a reminder and some that.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Are some fresh takes, if you will.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Shall we dive in? Yeah, kick us off. The first step.
- 1:26Speaker 3: In the Rich in Life formula to travel is know
- 1:28Speaker 3: the best time to bork.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I loved the way you just.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Bork. You're flying. Bork.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Know the best time to bork. To bork. To bork. overall,
- 1:39Speaker 1: when do I book?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Because I do think that's like a question that we
- 1:43Speaker 3: actually get a lot because, you know, there's lots of
- 1:46Speaker 3: chats online about when is.
- 1:48Speaker 1: The right time to book your flights.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's like when the third star is brightest
- 1:52Speaker 3: under the red moon, you shall book plane tickets. And
- 1:54Speaker 3: it's like can someone just give me– a straightforward answer.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And the tough thing is, is that in today's day
- 2:01Speaker 2: and age, I think that straightforward answer is muddy. It's
- 2:05Speaker 2: a little less straightforward than maybe it used to be.
- 2:08Speaker 2: There's a misconception that Tuesdays are the best days to
- 2:11Speaker 2: book flights, but apparently that's no longer the case. According
- 2:16Speaker 2: to Hopper, the reality is that prices change so often
- 2:19Speaker 2: and it really does depend on the route and that
- 2:22Speaker 2: there isn't really one best day to book flights anymore
- 2:25Speaker 2: that guarantees that you're going to get the best price.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So unless there's a flight sale such as like Travel
- 2:32Speaker 2: Tuesday in November, it's actually more about the timing of
- 2:36Speaker 2: the actual booking.
- 2:37Speaker 3: It's when you book it ahead of the holiday, not
- 2:41Speaker 3: what day. Because if you're going on a trip next
- 2:45Speaker 3: week and you're going, but I'll book it on the Tuesday,
- 2:47Speaker 3: that flight is going to be significantly more expensive than
- 2:51Speaker 3: when you do it in this like golden time frame.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 2:56Speaker 3: So it's actually more about the timing of your booking
- 2:58Speaker 3: rather than the actual day that you book it. According
- 3:01Speaker 3: to Flight Centre, it's recommended to book domestic flights six
- 3:04Speaker 3: to eight weeks out and international flights three to four
- 3:08Speaker 3: months out to get competitive prices, which I think is
- 3:11Speaker 3: interesting because sometimes you hear like, no, I should book
- 3:13Speaker 3: like way, way in advance or I should book like
- 3:16Speaker 3: the day before and I'll get cheap seats. Yes, and
- 3:19Speaker 3: then I've also been told six months. As well. So
- 3:23Speaker 3: I think for international, I would do that like.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Four to six months mark.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And then yes, for domestic six to eight.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And then flight center, they've also said that booking a
- 3:34Speaker 2: full 12 months ahead can actually be more expensive.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Because essentially these airlines want to fill seats. Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 3: So they're not stressed about filling seats 12 months in advance.
- 3:47Speaker 3: They've got a lot of time. Whereas once we hit
- 3:50Speaker 3: the six-month mark, then it's like, okay, like is this
- 3:52Speaker 3: plane going to be full? So that's when you'll kind
- 3:55Speaker 3: of see they're like, all right, we need to fill
- 3:56Speaker 3: the plane up now. Yeah. And once that plane's full,
- 3:59Speaker 3: once there's maybe like 10% of seats left, boom, up
- 4:02Speaker 3: goes the pricing.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So definitely I think being a little.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Bit more type A with your planning of your flights
- 4:10Speaker 3: and also on that app Hopper, it will show you
- 4:13Speaker 3: with like color coding what days are more expensive. So
- 4:18Speaker 3: obviously landing or flying out on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday
- 4:24Speaker 3: and Sunday are more expensive.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And then Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday are a little bit more affordable.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And also you can look at like if you want
- 4:33Speaker 2: to use points or something as well and kind of
- 4:35Speaker 2: weigh that up. Just gives you a little bit more
- 4:37Speaker 2: time when you give yourself a little bit more room.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah. But I think my biggest life lesson when booking
- 4:44Speaker 3: flights also comes in with like the convenience tax.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Of, like, you also need to weigh up.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Where flights get really, really expensive is when you need
- 4:54Speaker 3: to change them.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: So, like, knowing yourself, knowing what your schedule is, and
- 5:01Speaker 3: not booking something that, like, future you will not want
- 5:04Speaker 3: to do.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah. If you don't want to.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Wake up at, like, 4 a.m. to get on a flight, like,
- 5:10Speaker 3: tomorrow … You in six months also isn't going to
- 5:13Speaker 3: want to do that. Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So like weigh up how much saving or spending the
- 5:17Speaker 1: extra $ 100 is going to be because to change it
- 5:19Speaker 1: close to the date is like $ 500. Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 3: For example, our recent trip, I also knew myself and
- 5:26Speaker 3: I put two bags on the whole trip because I
- 5:30Speaker 3: was like, I know I'm an overpacker and every time
- 5:33Speaker 3: I'm at the airport, I have to pay hundreds to
- 5:36Speaker 3: like get my suitcase on the plane rather than paying
- 5:39Speaker 3: $ 20 to to have an extra suitcase, I've saved so
- 5:42Speaker 3: much money.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Yeah. So know thyself. Yeah, honestly. Is part of my
- 5:48Speaker 1: travel hack as well. Yeah, a bit of reflection is key. Yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: some self-awareness.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah. But the other thing is a lot of people
- 5:55Speaker 3: use an incognito browser to find cheaper flights, but this
- 5:58Speaker 3: doesn't always save you money, which I.
- 6:00Speaker 1: news to me. So according to.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Consumer Reports 372 search study, they found identical prices 88%
- 6:09Speaker 3: of the time when using incognito versus your regular browser. Instead,
- 6:14Speaker 3: try to be like a little bit more flexible with
- 6:16Speaker 3: your travel plans rather than focusing on like the exact
- 6:19Speaker 3: right time to book. The more you do look at
- 6:22Speaker 3: a website though, like the more pricing will fluctuate and
- 6:26Speaker 3: increase because they know that you're going to book. So
- 6:28Speaker 3: if you're visiting like an airline site quite often or
- 6:31Speaker 3: if you have it in your cart, you go back
- 6:33Speaker 3: out and you go back in.
- 6:35Speaker 1: That can sometimes influence the price.
- 6:37Speaker 3: So if that happens, ask like a friend to pull
- 6:39Speaker 3: it up on like their laptop or their browser and
- 6:44Speaker 3: see if you can get.
- 6:45Speaker 1: A better rate. Yeah, that's a good tip. And also
- 6:47Speaker 1: like the shoulder seasons.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So don't always go places in peak time. We've been
- 6:52Speaker 3: to Europe during June and July, both years. And honestly,
- 6:56Speaker 3: I reckon we could do May.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I think so too.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I think that would be my strategy, not only for
- 7:01Speaker 3: the cost, but also for the experience.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Like, I think it's so busy that That I do
- 7:08Speaker 3: genuinely think I would love to come here when it's
- 7:11Speaker 3: not peak season.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Also because it's hot.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I was going to say and also because it's hot.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And the same goes if it's like peak winter, it's
- 7:18Speaker 2: going to be freezing. It's like it could actually be
- 7:20Speaker 2: a more pleasant experience in terms of how much money
- 7:23Speaker 2: you're spending.
- 7:24Speaker 1: We love spring and autumn. We love spring. Why aren't
- 7:25Speaker 1: we traveling in spring and autumn? They're underrated. They're so underrated. Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Spring and autumn, hot girl summer. Okay? No one's saying spring, girl, summer.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I know.
- 7:36Speaker 1: We need to start saying that more. Spring, girl, summer.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Spring, girl, summer.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Everyone's like, that doesn't make sense. It does in my
- 7:42Speaker 1: heart and in my soul. It's a lifestyle.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Okay?
- 7:45Speaker 1: All right.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Tip number two, no more in-flight facials.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I'm kind of upset about this one. Yeah. I felt
- 7:54Speaker 1: like you would be. But we've had this lesson recently.
- 7:58Speaker 3: We've all seen the TikToks of the girlies doing like
- 8:00Speaker 3: their face masks and elaborate skincare routines on the plane.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So flying can make your skin feel.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Like a bit dry and also you're trying to kill time,
- 8:10Speaker 3: you're trying to like do maybe a bit of a
- 8:11Speaker 3: reset because you're feeling a bit stale maybe. So it's
- 8:15Speaker 3: not surprising that like a little bit of a skincare
- 8:18Speaker 3: or the bio mask that turns clear has become like
- 8:22Speaker 3: a bit of.
- 8:22Speaker 1: A thing, right?
- 8:24Speaker 3: But if you have eczema, rosacea, a compromised skin barrier,
- 8:29Speaker 3: the dry cabin can also cause like irritation or a flare-up.
- 8:33Speaker 3: As someone who does have eczema, like my lips will
- 8:37Speaker 3: have very much like a bit of a flare-up, my
- 8:40Speaker 3: skin and like the parts that I do get eczema,
- 8:42Speaker 3: like I will feel that because as well like there's
- 8:44Speaker 3: the air conditioning and, you know, you can have that moment.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But if you also add like frequent face touching or
- 8:52Speaker 3: applying products with unclean hands.
- 8:54Speaker 1: This could just make it worse. I know.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Which is really upsetting.
- 9:01Speaker 2: However, you don't have to skip the skincare altogether on
- 9:04Speaker 2: a flight. According to an esthetician in a Birdie article,
- 9:08Speaker 2: I'll link it in the show notes, you should actually
- 9:10Speaker 2: focus more on the before flight skin prep rather than
- 9:14Speaker 2: during the flight. So she says to cleanse, hydrate, seal
- 9:18Speaker 2: and protect your skin before flying. And then if your
- 9:22Speaker 2: skin is feeling a little bit dry and tight, rather
- 9:25Speaker 2: than doing like a sheet mask or a full skincare routine,
- 9:29Speaker 2: spray yourself with an essence or a mist instead because
- 9:33Speaker 2: then you're still giving your skin some hydration and refreshing
- 9:38Speaker 2: but you're not actually touching your face.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Exactly. And if you think about, not to get like germophobia,
- 9:44Speaker 3: but like if you think about the bacteria that, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 3: there's lots of people on a plane, you've touched your
- 9:48Speaker 3: face and then you've put a sheet mask on top
- 9:51Speaker 3: of all of that gunky little bacteria girly, you're basically
- 9:57Speaker 3: trapping the bacteria onto your skin underneath.
- 10:00Speaker 1: A sheet mask or under like you know your vaso
- 10:03Speaker 1: yeah so girl you are.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Like what's it slugging that's it that it's like that's
- 10:07Speaker 3: not actually good for your.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Skin and then you're learning you're going why am i
- 10:10Speaker 1: breaking out Me, every time. I know.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Also, I think, like, when there's these long skincare routines
- 10:17Speaker 3: in the bathroom.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Get out.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Yes.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Get out.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Do not do a 12-step skincare routine on the plain bathroom.
- 10:25Speaker 1: No. Do that in your seat. That is not good
- 10:27Speaker 1: plain etiquette.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I agree.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I need to shit. Get out. Yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Okay?
- 10:33Speaker 1: Shit or get off the pot. Shit or get off
- 10:36Speaker 1: the pot. Literally.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Okay?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Okay. And I think more people need to say that. Seriously.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I do believe most people are doing this at their chair.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And even now you can do less. Exactly. But I agree.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I would also say like prep if you do have eczema,
- 10:54Speaker 3: if you do get irritated skin, like prep your skin
- 10:56Speaker 3: before you're getting on the plane because, well, you don't
- 10:59Speaker 3: have enough room.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You don't want to get in there.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, then you don't have to fuck around with all
- 11:03Speaker 3: the liquids in your carry-on as well. Exactly, because the
- 11:06Speaker 3: liquids in the carry-on, also take up space. So instead
- 11:10Speaker 3: of packing like a 12-step skincare routine on a flight,
- 11:14Speaker 3: what are some of our carry-on must-haves?
- 11:18Speaker 1: Mine would be an eye mask. I need an eye
- 11:22Speaker 1: mask on the plane and I need my own.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I don't really like the ones that they provide.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I prefer, I.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Love bringing my own eye mask, the ones that have
- 11:29Speaker 3: like the cushion on the outside. So it really just
- 11:32Speaker 3: like creates a blackout moment for you because you don't
- 11:35Speaker 3: want to be the person that's sitting next to someone
- 11:37Speaker 3: that has the reading light on, which is their prerogative.
- 11:39Speaker 3: They're allowed to have their light on. You can't fall
- 11:42Speaker 3: asleep because the light's on. I also would go ahead
- 11:45Speaker 3: and say my loop earplugs changed the game when flying.
- 11:49Speaker 3: The sleep loop earplugs are so 10 out of 10.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I was like a baby. I was like, bye-bye.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Baby's going bye-bye. I also love the AirFly. So we
- 12:00Speaker 3: both have this. And AirFly is this little GoDaddy thing
- 12:05Speaker 3: that you plug into the plane screen on the back
- 12:07Speaker 3: of the chair or wherever and it allows you to
- 12:09Speaker 3: use your Bluetooth headphones.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Yep. Because the headphones that planes give you hurt my ears.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah. And the sound quality.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And they're not noise cancelling.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Which leads me to my next point. Noise cancelling headphones. Yeah. Must.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Absolutely need those. Absolutely must.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Also, downloading stuff on your phone before you get on
- 12:29Speaker 2: the plane. As soon as you step on the plane,
- 12:32Speaker 2: the Wi-Fi, like you just can't.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So always have like.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Your podcast, your audio books, your movies, your TV shows
- 12:40Speaker 2: loaded at home.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And test them.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Test them on airplane mode because sometimes … They just
- 12:47Speaker 3: don't work. Yeah. So, like, download everything and then put
- 12:50Speaker 3: it on airplane mode and try to open everything because
- 12:53Speaker 3: I've downloaded a movie that I was really excited to
- 12:55Speaker 3: watch once and I was ready to go in and
- 12:57Speaker 3: it was like, there's an error with your download. And
- 12:59Speaker 3: it was literally that, like, melodramatic scene.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I'd be like, no! Yeah, totally. Heartbreaking.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 13:05Speaker 1: All right. Moving on. Moving on.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Okay, this next tip is brought to you by the
- 13:11Speaker 2: sponsor of today's episode, Velocity Frequent Flyer. You chicks probably
- 13:15Speaker 2: know what we're about to get into because we've spoken
- 13:18Speaker 2: about this many times before. The obvious tip is to
- 13:23Speaker 2: earn points on flights, hotels, and accommodations so that the
- 13:27Speaker 2: travel that you're doing now can also help fund your
- 13:31Speaker 2: next holiday. And before we really got into points, which
- 13:36Speaker 2: was like three years ago or so- We didn't really
- 13:39Speaker 2: know that you could earn points on more than just
- 13:42Speaker 2: travel and thought it was kind of just something that
- 13:45Speaker 2: like your parents got really into being like, don't forget
- 13:48Speaker 2: to ski.
- 13:48Speaker 1: In the flyby card.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Yeah, or just like mum being like, oh, get it
- 13:51Speaker 3: on point. I've earned over 200,000 points and have never
- 13:55Speaker 3: had to get a credit card.
- 13:56Speaker 1: So I kind of wanted to share what some of
- 13:58Speaker 1: those tips are.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Like it's, yes, this is a sponsored segment, but genuinely
- 14:03Speaker 3: this is something we do in our every single day
- 14:06Speaker 3: and genuinely has saved me So much money.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So all I do to earn velocity.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Points is I earn them on the money that I
- 14:14Speaker 3: was already going to spend. So I've created a quick
- 14:16Speaker 3: little cheat sheet on how I earned over 200,000 points.
- 14:20Speaker 1: I'm going to quickfire this. So take notes.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Linking flybys and velocity accounts so you can earn at Coles, Kmart, Bunnings, Officeworks,
- 14:28Speaker 3: and transfer your flybys into frequent flyer points. So basically
- 14:32Speaker 3: I aim to do all of my grocery shopping or
- 14:34Speaker 3: usual expenses at these retailers so I also earn points
- 14:38Speaker 3: for that.
- 14:39Speaker 1: I earn points on.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Rideshare with Didi, food delivery with DoorDash, and when I
- 14:43Speaker 3: scan a me and you QR code when grabbing dinner
- 14:46Speaker 3: and drinks at an eligible venue.
- 14:47Speaker 1: So I'm like, no, girls, girls, this one's all me.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Don't worry.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I'm like, hey. Little do they know.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Yeah, literally.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I'm getting all the points.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Literally.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Or like if we're getting takeaway, I'm like, oh, no,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'll get it. Just transfer me half.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 1: And then I'm like, yes, thank you.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Also, if I'm online shopping, I do– it through the
- 15:08Speaker 3: velocity store when eligible because they have over 300 brands
- 15:11Speaker 3: so i just double check because i might as well
- 15:13Speaker 3: earn points when i'm buying something anyway a good example
- 15:16Speaker 3: of that is i'm not saying just go spend money
- 15:18Speaker 3: so that you can earn points is like we buy
- 15:20Speaker 3: pet food every single month so like i might as
- 15:24Speaker 3: well just do it through that and earn on that
- 15:26Speaker 3: spending like this is what rich people do they do
- 15:30Speaker 3: not just spend money they make their money like do
- 15:34Speaker 3: something As well when they're spending money. So some people
- 15:37Speaker 3: with credit cards, like that's how they do it. They
- 15:39Speaker 3: earn rewards through that. I do it through my velocity. Yeah.
- 15:44Speaker 3: You know? And the biggest hack is earning through your bills.
- 15:48Speaker 3: So like eligible insurances or gas or electricity bills. I've
- 15:52Speaker 3: spoken about this online before.
- 15:54Speaker 1: It was in a video.
- 15:54Speaker 3: It was like five things that are worth the money
- 15:57Speaker 3: that also saved me money. And the one thing that
- 16:00Speaker 3: has saved me the most money in my entire life
- 16:03Speaker 3: was pet insurance. It saved me like 18,000 fucking dollars
- 16:08Speaker 3: and also saved my cat's life, you know? And I
- 16:12Speaker 3: got that because I saw the offer to get bonus
- 16:15Speaker 3: velocity points through a certain pet insurance.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And I was like, sick, I'm going to do that.
- 16:20Speaker 3: You're like, I already needed pet insurance. That pet insurance
- 16:23Speaker 3: looks good to me. It suits what I need.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I think I switched.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I switched pet insurance because I saw the offer. I
- 16:29Speaker 3: already had pet insurance because I'm a like the poster
- 16:31Speaker 3: child for it basically at this point.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I'm like, everybody get pet insurance, please.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And my pet insurance is like $ 35 a month. I
- 16:37Speaker 3: know it's different depending on like your situation, what animals
- 16:41Speaker 3: and how many.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Pets you have. But I switched it because I was like, well,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I would like that, please.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Yeah. The point is, yeah, it's something you were already
- 16:47Speaker 3: going to spend money on. So you look for a
- 16:49Speaker 3: way to earn points.
- 16:51Speaker 2: And these are just some of the ways that you
- 16:53Speaker 2: can earn points on everyday stuff that you already have
- 16:56Speaker 2: to spend money on. But we've actually published a whole
- 16:58Speaker 2: guide to earning, redeeming, and maximizing your velocity points on Substack,
- 17:02Speaker 2: which we've linked in the show notes. But our rule
- 17:05Speaker 2: is that if you're already planning to spend money, always
- 17:07Speaker 2: check if you can earn points first. But velocity, membership,
- 17:10Speaker 2: and partner terms and conditions apply. So we've popped a
- 17:13Speaker 2: link in the show notes for all the details. Number four,
- 17:16Speaker 2: we're talking travel money. Beware dynamic conversion. So many of
- 17:20Speaker 2: us know that you'll save when you're spending overseas by
- 17:22Speaker 2: using a travel card that won't charge you foreign transaction
- 17:25Speaker 2: fees when you're spending in a foreign currency. But what
- 17:29Speaker 2: about when you're at the terminal and they ask you
- 17:32Speaker 2: to charge you in Australian dollars instead?
- 17:35Speaker 3: So wherever you are, it'll be like, do you want
- 17:36Speaker 3: to pay in the local currency or do you want
- 17:38Speaker 3: to pay in your country?
- 17:41Speaker 1: Like home country's currency. Yeah.
- 17:43Speaker 2: When that comes up, always say no. And if you're
- 17:47Speaker 2: using a travel card, pay in the local currency.
- 17:51Speaker 3: So when you're saying say no, it's like, do you
- 17:54Speaker 3: want to pay in like, let's say USD or AUD,
- 17:57Speaker 3: click USD, click where you are.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Don't click your local.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Because the rate offered pads in a margin for the
- 18:05Speaker 2: merchant on top of that. And like some Australian cards
- 18:09Speaker 2: will still charge you like the foreign transaction fee that
- 18:15Speaker 2: is applied as well. And overall dynamic currency conversion cost
- 18:19Speaker 2: travelers an estimated 6% average markup globally.
- 18:21Speaker 1: That's wild.
- 18:22Speaker 3: And when you kind of put in how much you're
- 18:25Speaker 3: spending on travel, like let's say your trip costs $ 2, 000,
- 18:28Speaker 3: which like that's a pretty, like that's a moderate spending
- 18:32Speaker 3: budget on a trip.
- 18:33Speaker 1: 6% of that is a lot of money.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Like when you're putting in hotels, flights, food you know
- 18:39Speaker 3: six percent adds up a lot and it's wild because
- 18:43Speaker 3: I was literally buying tickets for a show and it
- 18:46Speaker 3: had like AUD recommended so don't listen to it like
- 18:51Speaker 3: it might even try to be like yeah pick this
- 18:52Speaker 3: one that's a good one yeah no pay in local
- 18:56Speaker 3: currency in terms of the local place you're traveling to
- 18:59Speaker 3: not where your banking is from yeah okay and finally
- 19:04Speaker 3: create your own itinerary don't Just rely on TikTok to
- 19:10Speaker 3: tell you where to go. As someone who has done
- 19:12Speaker 3: that on holidays, this is definitely a big life lesson
- 19:16Speaker 3: that I've pulled from a couple of trips. Like, yes,
- 19:20Speaker 3: there can be some great tips and recommendations and hacks
- 19:24Speaker 3: that you can get from social media when you're traveling.
- 19:27Speaker 3: But sometimes this can end up biting you in the bum.
- 19:31Speaker 3: So 48% of Gen Z travelers use TikTok to plan
- 19:34Speaker 3: their travel itineraries.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And like I said, same. We've done it. But while
- 19:39Speaker 1: TikTok can be.
- 19:40Speaker 3: A great way to discover cool places to visit and
- 19:42Speaker 3: get like an honest review of things, it also means
- 19:45Speaker 3: that we're all like creating identical travel memories so there
- 19:51Speaker 3: was this post I'll link it in the show notes
- 19:53Speaker 3: on Instagram that kind of was like are we all
- 19:58Speaker 3: are you traveling or are you recreating your algorithm and
- 20:02Speaker 3: basically it's was highlighting how we're a little bit more
- 20:06Speaker 3: focused on getting content on holidays rather than getting experience
- 20:11Speaker 3: yeah and I thought that was such a good thing
- 20:13Speaker 3: to highlight because it's not to say that you can't
- 20:15Speaker 3: see something online and be like that is so beautiful
- 20:18Speaker 3: I really want to go there but also like are
- 20:22Speaker 3: you going to go there and really go for the
- 20:24Speaker 3: experience or are you going because like it's trending yeah
- 20:28Speaker 3: and not last year the year before like we went
- 20:31Speaker 3: to this um town and it was amazing but if
- 20:35Speaker 3: you've seen it on tiktok so is like the other
- 20:39Speaker 3: 100,000 people that liked that TikTok.
- 20:41Speaker 1: And it was so busy.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Also, the beach was closed and it was so intensely
- 20:48Speaker 3: heavy with tourism, which is great for the town and
- 20:52Speaker 3: the businesses there. But it just ended up not being
- 20:56Speaker 3: like what was, it wasn't magical. Yeah. And so we
- 20:59Speaker 3: ended up getting a car and we just picked a
- 21:02Speaker 3: spot on the map. Yeah. And we drove down to
- 21:05Speaker 3: this like, small town that I tried to look it
- 21:09Speaker 3: up on TikTok, no content. Like I just went off
- 21:13Speaker 3: Google Images. Yeah. And it was my favorite, favorite place
- 21:17Speaker 3: I've ever been to and it was so magical and
- 21:19Speaker 3: it had nothing to do with the algorithm, which I
- 21:22Speaker 3: don't want to sound like I'm sitting on a high
- 21:24Speaker 3: horse being like, and I went offline and I chose
- 21:28Speaker 3: a place that no one had been to before. I'm
- 21:30Speaker 3: not saying that because there's been a lot of places
- 21:32Speaker 3: that I've also been to or a lot of tips
- 21:34Speaker 3: that I've listened to from TikTok that that have been amazing.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:39Speaker 3: So I think the question to ask is, if I
- 21:41Speaker 3: never saw it on my TikTok, would this be on
- 21:44Speaker 3: my itinerary? And also remember that people are going to
- 21:46Speaker 3: edit in the best parts of something. Yeah. You know,
- 21:49Speaker 3: like it's always going to look really, really, like they're
- 21:52Speaker 3: not going to put the shit part of the holiday
- 21:54Speaker 3: in it.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Sometimes they do, not to say everyone.
- 21:57Speaker 2: But most of the time it's like the best case scenario.
- 22:00Speaker 2: They've pulled up the vibrant.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Sea and it's looking at the bluest water in the
- 22:04Speaker 3: world and then you get there and you're like, oh shit,
- 22:06Speaker 3: like there was another beach that was just as beautiful
- 22:08Speaker 3: but took maybe an hour less to get to and
- 22:10Speaker 3: I could have gone there. Some of my favourite places
- 22:12Speaker 3: we've been to are the most like touristy things we
- 22:14Speaker 3: could have done ever.
- 22:16Speaker 1: That's what I mean.
- 22:17Speaker 2: I'm not being like don't go to the Eiffel Tower
- 22:18Speaker 2: when you go to Paris. Like you can do the
- 22:21Speaker 2: touristy thing.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Sometimes that is really magical and like can be some
- 22:25Speaker 3: of the most special memories as well.
- 22:27Speaker 1: But yeah, look beyond your FYP as well. Try to
- 22:30Speaker 1: have a mix of both.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Try to have. I think that's like the sweet spot
- 22:34Speaker 3: is try to have like, yeah, 50% of maybe some
- 22:36Speaker 3: recommendations and some tips and 50% of you have no
- 22:39Speaker 3: idea what to expect.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Like because that's where sometimes it can be a little
- 22:44Speaker 3: bit like, I don't know, maybe it's a bit less
- 22:46Speaker 3: magical because you already know what it's going to look like.
- 22:48Speaker 1: You already know what it's going to be. The expectations
- 22:50Speaker 1: are set up for you. Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 3: And it's so much more fun to also just have
- 22:55Speaker 3: that little bit of like, ooh, don't know.
- 22:58Speaker 1: In our experience, you'll get the best recs when you
- 23:00Speaker 1: talk to a local. Yes.
- 23:03Speaker 3: I honestly think that is how, like, have a few
- 23:05Speaker 3: things planned out, but then, like, when you're at a restaurant,
- 23:08Speaker 3: be like, where else.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Should I go next?
- 23:10Speaker 3: One of the best nights of our entire lives, so
- 23:13Speaker 3: many actually, have been, like, saluted at, like, a surfing lesson,
- 23:18Speaker 3: and then we ended up becoming friends with the surfing
- 23:20Speaker 3: lesson guy.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I didn't know. I just read my book on the beach.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Then we ended up going to like some bar with
- 23:26Speaker 1: like him and his mates and then their friends. Went
- 23:29Speaker 1: to karaoke.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Karaoke and then some like very famous Hawaiian singer.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Did like a pop-up gig there.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Yeah. And then another night we ended up going to
- 23:36Speaker 3: a country bar with his brother. Yeah.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And then he drove us home. Like it was the
- 23:41Speaker 1: craziest thing and none of those things were on our itinerary. No. No.
- 23:45Speaker 1: But it just happened.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 1: And we didn't make a TikTok about any of those things.
- 23:48Speaker 3: No.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And yet it still happened and it was great.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Your travel still happens if you don't take a photo.
- 23:54Speaker 1: That too.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Your travel still happens if you didn't make a TikTok.
- 23:57Speaker 3: And that's as someone, like that's as people who making
- 24:00Speaker 3: content is our job. But there's so many things that
- 24:02Speaker 3: we do and I'm like, I just want to experience this.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Like I don't want it to be about like getting a,
- 24:06Speaker 3: hot photo and sometimes that ruins the vibe. Yeah, because
- 24:10Speaker 3: then if you don't get the pic, you're like, well, fuck,
- 24:12Speaker 3: I travelled all the way to Paris for nothing.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I feel like we need to lose the, oh, if
- 24:16Speaker 1: you didn't take a pic, did it still happen? Yes,
- 24:18Speaker 1: it did. Yeah, totally. And, like, in five years you'll
- 24:22Speaker 1: probably think the outfit's cringe anyway.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So there's that too. Like, obviously take photos and, like.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Have the memories.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Have the memories. But, like, your holiday is not to
- 24:32Speaker 3: build content.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Totally, yeah.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Well, that's a wrap on our Rich in Life formula
