Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey everyone, emia body here bringing you another installment, a
- 0:22Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. If you're new to this
- 0:29Speaker 1: weekly segment bonus part of Hurdle. On Five Minute Friday,
- 0:36Speaker 1: I chat through a story, something I'm going through, something
- 0:39Speaker 1: that's happening in my life. I share a thought prompt
- 0:42Speaker 1: to take you into the weekend, and then offer up
- 0:46Speaker 1: some of my content picks, some of the stuff that
- 0:47Speaker 1: I think is really awesome that I want to share
- 0:51Speaker 1: with you this week. Tis the season I'm chatting about Christmas.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Now. I don't know about you, guys.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I grew up in a a nominational household, so my
- 1:01Speaker 1: mother is Jewish and my father is Italian, and I,
- 1:08Speaker 1: for my adult life, as long as I can remember,
- 1:11Speaker 1: have been splitting my time between the two of them
- 1:15Speaker 1: when it comes to Christmas time. So I've done the
- 1:19Speaker 1: exact same thing on Christmas Eve forever.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I usually go out east.
- 1:25Speaker 1: My grandmother lives out near the Hamptons, and I go
- 1:27Speaker 1: out east and I spend Christmas Eve with my dad's
- 1:31Speaker 1: side of the family, and we eat all of the
- 1:34Speaker 1: seafood because we're Italian, and then we drink eggnog. I'm
- 1:39Speaker 1: pretty sure my Grandmother must put at least like three
- 1:42Speaker 1: different types of alcohol in the eggnog.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It's always super boozy.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And then we open gifts and all this is on
- 1:47Speaker 1: Christmas Eve, and it's just so special because I feel
- 1:50Speaker 1: like life is just so hectic, especially in recent years,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and it's just such a beautiful opportunity for me just
- 2:00Speaker 1: time with my family. There's also like other small traditions
- 2:04Speaker 1: that we enjoy on Christmas Eve. I have been tasked
- 2:08Speaker 1: for some time now to be the person who now
- 2:10Speaker 1: makes Grandma's signature Italian tricolor cookie recipe. They are my favorite.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I can't wait to make them. I think I'm going
- 2:18Speaker 1: to make them this weekend. We also always eat a
- 2:20Speaker 1: bunch of stuff that we typically buy at Arthur Avenue
- 2:23Speaker 1: in the Bronx.
- 2:24Speaker 2: If you've never heard of Arthur Avenue, it is amazing.
- 2:27Speaker 1: It is this street uptown from where I am that
- 2:31Speaker 1: has all of the classic Italian shops, Like there's one
- 2:33Speaker 1: place that you buy Mutzaurel, There's another place that you
- 2:36Speaker 1: buy olive bread. There's another place that you buy Canoli's,
- 2:41Speaker 1: like there's a certain specific shop for each of these things,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and we eat all this stuff from there on Christmas Eve, So.
- 2:47Speaker 2: That's Christmas Eve.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Then on Christmas Day, I usually take the port Jeff
- 2:51Speaker 1: Ferry back to my mom. My mom is in Connecticut,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and we do the entire Jewish Christmas stick. We pick
- 2:59Speaker 1: a movie to go see, and we order in Chinese food,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and I literally our biggest decision for the day is
- 3:05Speaker 1: like what pair of spandex am I going to wear?
- 3:08Speaker 2: And how Golton is I want to be with my
- 3:11Speaker 2: Chinese food order.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I myself am more of a chicken and broccoli person,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but growing up I was a general so's chows. I
- 3:19Speaker 1: feel like I've heard it both ways. Anyway, I always
- 3:22Speaker 1: ordered that. I don't do that so much anymore, I digress.
- 3:26Speaker 1: This year, I'm not doing either of those things. I
- 3:31Speaker 1: actually literally last night had this conversation with both of
- 3:35Speaker 1: my parents, and, like many of you, I mean, this
- 3:38Speaker 1: year has had its fair share of ups and downs,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and I think it just got to a point when
- 3:42Speaker 1: I was starting to think about Christmas and like making
- 3:45Speaker 1: all this happen and what would have to go into
- 3:46Speaker 1: making all of this happen, that I just kind of
- 3:50Speaker 1: accepted that I wasn't going to be able to make
- 3:53Speaker 1: everybody happy and that the right decision for me was
- 3:56Speaker 1: gonna be to stay in New York. And as you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: staying in New York for me means being in my apartment,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and being a single woman in my thirties, that means
- 4:09Speaker 1: me staying in my apartment by myself. You could choose,
- 4:13Speaker 1: A person could choose to feel some kind of way
- 4:15Speaker 1: about this, like I could choose to feel depressed or upset,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and of course, like it's natural, I'm sure it points
- 4:22Speaker 1: throughout this experience that I'm going to feel lonely. But
- 4:25Speaker 1: I think that twenty twenty has taught us a lot
- 4:28Speaker 1: of stuff, and for me, it's really been just one
- 4:30Speaker 1: continuous lesson in focusing your energy on the things that
- 4:33Speaker 1: you can control. And this is just how it is now.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So for me dwelling on this decision which has been
- 4:41Speaker 1: made me dwelling on this decision, and giving my energy
- 4:45Speaker 1: to feeling maybe upset about this decision, that's not going
- 4:49Speaker 1: to get me anywhere. And I'm sharing this with you
- 4:52Speaker 1: because I'm sure that this shift in things not being
- 4:55Speaker 1: how we wish that maybe they could be is something
- 4:59Speaker 1: that you are dealing with as well. And it's interesting actually,
- 5:04Speaker 1: because I feel as though I'm being a little selfish
- 5:09Speaker 1: with my decision and that maybe there was some way
- 5:12Speaker 1: that I could have figured out the right things to
- 5:15Speaker 1: do to quarantine, to navigate to be with my family
- 5:18Speaker 1: on Christmas Eve. But at the same time, I feel
- 5:20Speaker 1: like I'm not being selfish. It's both because I am
- 5:26Speaker 1: not putting other people at risk to do the thing
- 5:28Speaker 1: that in other circumstances I would have done without any question.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I am okay with being a little selfish, and to
- 5:39Speaker 1: be quite frank, I honestly don't believe that I have
- 5:45Speaker 1: ever said that when it comes to my family, I
- 5:48Speaker 1: have just always, always always wanted to do as much
- 5:53Speaker 1: as I can to make everyone happy and to be
- 5:56Speaker 1: there for everyone, even if that meant putting myself out
- 5:59Speaker 1: in working harder or longer to be somewhere at the
- 6:02Speaker 1: right time and at the right place, and all these things.
- 6:05Speaker 1: This year a huge lesson having some grace with myself,
- 6:09Speaker 1: understanding that I'm truly doing the best I can to
- 6:13Speaker 1: stay afloat, to keep moving forward, and in the holiday
- 6:17Speaker 1: season right now, I think it's really really important that
- 6:20Speaker 1: we find the silver linings, we find the gratitude, we
- 6:24Speaker 1: take joy in the small winds and so for me
- 6:28Speaker 1: right now, I myself am looking forward to figuring out
- 6:32Speaker 1: exactly what Christmas movies I'm going to watch. I'm all
- 6:34Speaker 1: yours for your suggestions, and also where I should order
- 6:38Speaker 1: from for Christmas dinner and Christmas Eve dinner. So again,
- 6:42Speaker 1: suggestions are welcome. If you feel this way, we're on
- 6:46Speaker 1: the same page. My question for you this week have
- 6:49Speaker 1: you felt at times like you've had to be a
- 6:52Speaker 1: little selfish to take care of your own well being?
- 6:56Speaker 1: And if so, what did that I feel like and
- 7:01Speaker 1: how did you navigate that?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Again?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Have you had to be a little selfish over twenty
- 7:05Speaker 1: twenty to take care of your own wellbeing? And what
- 7:09Speaker 1: did that look like for you? Highlights of the week
- 7:12Speaker 1: links to all of this in the show notes. Check
- 7:15Speaker 1: out the Rambling Runner Virtual Summit. My good friend Matt,

- 7:22Speaker 1: ever Rambling Runner Virtual Summit this coming January January fifteenth
