In Vain
In Vain by Emily Dickinson is a short poem of impossible love, where a speaker insists she cannot live, die or rise to heaven beside the one she adores. Each stanza closes another door: life, death, even paradise. Dickinson sets broken porcelain, frost and the gaze of Jesus against an unbearable devotion. The speaker and her beloved remain separated by oceans and prayer, left with only a pale sustenance. It is a quietly devastating meditation on longing.
