- 0:14Speaker 3: Your chance to win with a Clicks Club card cashback.
- 0:17Speaker 3: And I'm not going to stop there because we've got
- 0:18Speaker 3: some news about next week's shows and some of our
- 0:21Speaker 3: great sponsors. But before we go anywhere, we also have
- 0:24Speaker 3: the unique opportunity for us to have a chat with
- 0:27Speaker 3: the one and only Neo, who's coming into studio to
- 0:31Speaker 3: have a conversation with us on the flash drive on
- 0:35Speaker 3: KFM 94.5, which I'm very, very happy about. It's going
- 0:37Speaker 3: to happen. And you know what? It's not going to
- 0:38Speaker 3: be something I'm going to let you wait for like
- 0:40Speaker 3: I usually do when it comes to your news stories. No,
- 0:42Speaker 3: I'm talking like in the next couple of minutes.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Do I look okay?
- 0:46Speaker 3: You look good. You always look okay. I've told you
- 0:49Speaker 3: this before. I prefer no makeup, but I see you
- 0:51Speaker 3: did subtle touches today.
- 0:53Speaker 5: Yes.
- 0:54Speaker 3: And your sunscreen with a little. Yeah, that's it.
- 0:56Speaker 1: OK, good.
- 0:57Speaker 3: That's why I'm proud. I'm happy.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I'm looking shiny because of my sunscreen. But what a
- 1:02Speaker 3: lovely day it's been. If you don't know this, we
- 1:05Speaker 3: had this lovely broadcast with Tracy Lang this morning. I
- 1:08Speaker 3: was involved going to Kwasadi Primary School in Goodwood. And
- 1:13Speaker 3: they have that teacher, Danal Bosh, who actually won the prize.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Best Teacher, call it the Best Teacher Award in the
- 1:19Speaker 3: entire country.
- 1:20Speaker 4: Amazing!
- 1:21Speaker 3: A grade R teacher won it, which was almost unprecedented
- 1:24Speaker 3: because it's like you've just started.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Grade R, it's such a grassroots level, but the importance
- 1:30Speaker 3: of a grade R teacher, that cannot go sort of...
- 1:35Speaker 3: celebrated and that's why we had to do that this
- 1:37Speaker 3: morning so with the department of education and tracy's show
- 1:41Speaker 3: and i was there at the assembly i got the
- 1:42Speaker 3: chat to all those kids can i tell you the
- 1:44Speaker 3: coolest thing about these kids i walk into the assembly
- 1:47Speaker 3: yeah and already you hear laughter and giggling and you
- 1:51Speaker 3: hear all of these uh yeah all of these amazing
- 1:54Speaker 3: sort of murmurs coming around and then one of the
- 1:58Speaker 3: teachers is like it's That's your R. I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 3: it probably is. It's probably my hair. I'm not going
- 2:03Speaker 3: to lie.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Also, you're not threatening to them. You're the same height.
- 2:06Speaker 3: That's what the grade R class was in the front.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Legit same height. Like I disappeared into the crowd there.
- 2:13Speaker 3: They stood up. I was like, no, no, no, no.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Come on, grade R. We have to go to class. Oh, sorry, Carl.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that's exactly what happened. But I mean, you know what?
- 2:20Speaker 3: It's been it's been a beautiful day. And please, today,
- 2:22Speaker 3: if you can, your teachers need celebrating. That's the most
- 2:26Speaker 3: amazing thing. Like just celebrate your teachers. Let them... Feel
- 2:32Speaker 3: the love. And even if it's been a long time,
- 2:35Speaker 3: like even after school, pop in, send a mail, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 3: just ask the secretary at the school, you know, if
- 2:41Speaker 3: you can just say thank you, you know, that all
- 2:43Speaker 3: the times that you... And one of my key messages
- 2:46Speaker 3: at the assembly was to the kids is that every
- 2:48Speaker 3: time a teacher tells you to keep quiet, remember that
- 2:53Speaker 3: is the skill that they are trying to teach you
- 2:55Speaker 3: in order for you to know that later in your life,
- 2:57Speaker 3: there are going to be people in your life who are...
- 3:02Speaker 3: are really actually going to be very important. So just
- 3:04Speaker 3: like really appreciate your teachers and just appreciate them. You know,
- 3:09Speaker 3: that's the most important thing. You may be asking when
- 3:11Speaker 3: we are chatting to Neo, right?
- 3:13Speaker 6: When? When?
- 3:15Speaker 3: I literally see Neo behind you. Don't look now.
- 3:19Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Stop. He's behind you.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Play it cool.
- 3:23Speaker 3: He might be walking in. I'm just letting you know.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Are you going to be okay? Should I even play
- 3:27Speaker 3: the Friday song? I don't even think I should play
- 3:28Speaker 3: the Friday song. I should actually just bring him in
- 3:31Speaker 3: right now. Focus on me right now.
- 3:32Speaker 5: No, no.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I'm trying to focus on you. Just play it cool.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Play it cool.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Okay.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Play it cool. Play it cool. Play it cool, Cassidy.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He's behind you.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Just play it cool.
- 3:42Speaker 3: It's happening right now.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Don't.
- 3:44Speaker 6: Don't.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Don't.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Stop.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Stop.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Hello. How fun is this?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Just hold on. Hold on.
- 3:53Speaker 6: Okay.
- 3:53Speaker 3: There we go. Okay. Well, I had a whole intro
- 3:57Speaker 3: prepared and everything. That's it. Hello, Neil. Please take a seat. Well,
- 4:01Speaker 3: come hug me first.
- 4:02Speaker 4: How's it going?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Love it. Welcome. Please, have a seat.
- 4:07Speaker 5: All right.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yes. There we go. Here he is. Are you comfortable?
- 4:11Speaker 4: Squads all here?
- 4:12Speaker 1: I am very comfortable, sir.
- 4:13Speaker 3: That's good. Oh, my word. Here it is.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Here we are.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Here it is. It's finally happening.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I just.
- 4:20Speaker 3: This man taught us a lot in our lives.
- 4:21Speaker 6: All right.
- 4:22Speaker 3: He taught us that no matter what, you just have
- 4:24Speaker 3: to start.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 3: And when you start, you start now.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Hey.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Come on. He taught us work-life balance.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Play hard, work hard, play hard.
- 4:37Speaker 6: We work hard, play hard, keep partying like it's showtime.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Plus, Cassidy, you know that this song may or may
- 4:42Speaker 3: not have been written for somebody like you. That's right,
- 4:47Speaker 3: it's you. A track that I think everybody, we may
- 4:52Speaker 3: have had a breakup and we just, we were tied,
- 4:55Speaker 3: you know, and we just had to.
- 4:56Speaker 6: We were done.
- 4:57Speaker 4: So tied up to you.
- 5:02Speaker 3: And these songs were written because this man, Neo, always
- 5:06Speaker 3: focused on you. He asked, let me love you. And
- 5:19Speaker 3: we said, yes. We said, you know what? You're one
- 5:21Speaker 3: in a million, Neo.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Like, that's it.
- 5:23Speaker 4: We did.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You are. And that's why after all these years, I
- 5:28Speaker 3: just decided, like, how do we get even closer to Neo?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Like, how?
- 5:36Speaker 3: And you may know that this man is celebrating a
- 5:38Speaker 3: birthday on Sunday. So living this champagne life. So please welcome...
- 5:48Speaker 3: The One.
- 5:53Speaker 4: The One.
- 5:55Speaker 3: And that was my intro for you. Welcome, officially. Wow.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Amazing, brother. Amazing. I could tell you put some time
- 6:02Speaker 1: into that. Of course. Of course I did. Thank you.
- 6:05Speaker 3: No, thank you so much for taking the time.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I feel larger than life. Thank you.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yes, welcome back.
- 6:12Speaker 3: It's been a long time. In fact, I think it was.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It's been quite some time.
- 6:14Speaker 3: You were here in 2010.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Easily 10... Ooh, what is that?
- 6:19Speaker 3: 16 years.
- 6:19Speaker 1: 16 years ago.
- 6:20Speaker 3: What? Sheesh. Do you remember that time when you came
- 6:23Speaker 3: to Cape Town and were there any memories that you
- 6:26Speaker 3: just hold on to coming down? I know you've been
- 6:28Speaker 3: to a lot of places.
- 6:29Speaker 5: So here's one thing I remember. So we went to Lagos,
- 6:33Speaker 5: Nigeria first.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:34Speaker 5: And then we came here. And I just remember feeling
- 6:38Speaker 5: like this was... It kind of reminded me of Miami
- 6:40Speaker 5: a little, this place.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Oh.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Yeah, because we were right off the water, and it
- 6:45Speaker 5: gave me like an ocean drive type of vibe. So, yeah,
- 6:48Speaker 5: but that's the one thing I remember, just being beautiful
- 6:51Speaker 5: out here.
- 6:51Speaker 3: It is really beautiful. I'm so glad you said yes
- 6:53Speaker 3: to coming back.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 3: We missed you. And I mean, since then, the music itself,
- 6:58Speaker 3: like Highway 79.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Thank you, sir.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Hey, I thought you were going to wear a cowboy
- 7:03Speaker 5: hat today. I planned on it, but the weather chose otherwise.
- 7:06Speaker 5: So we just decided to go here.
- 7:07Speaker 1: You know, it's all good.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And now we're back. And I mean, we've got this,
- 7:10Speaker 3: I mean, for the concert tomorrow, of course. Okay, for this.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I didn't even call it a concert. I feel like
- 7:15Speaker 3: it's just an evening with you. You can chat to us.
- 7:18Speaker 3: You can just connect with us, though. For this particular treatment,
- 7:21Speaker 3: I know people love the classics, but I mean, are
- 7:24Speaker 3: we going to hear something from Highway 79?
- 7:26Speaker 4: Oh, definitely.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Please.
- 7:27Speaker 5: So to anybody that doesn't know, Highway 79 is the
- 7:29Speaker 5: latest album. It is country inspired, meaning it's not country music,
- 7:34Speaker 5: but it's music inspired by everything I love about country music.
- 7:38Speaker 5: So yeah, we'll definitely get some of those. This show
- 7:41Speaker 5: is going to be from the beginning of my career
- 7:43Speaker 5: to where.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I am now.
- 7:44Speaker 3: You're going to get a little bit of everything. And yeah, man,
- 7:46Speaker 3: we're going to have a good time. We're going to
- 7:47Speaker 3: have a great time. It's going to be the best time.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Grand Arena, Grand West tomorrow, it's going to happen. So
- 7:51Speaker 3: now that I have you here, there are some things
- 7:53Speaker 3: about your music career that I've always been intrigued about.
- 7:56Speaker 3: And I never got an opportunity to actually ask you
- 7:58Speaker 3: this anytime before, especially when, and I'll let you know
- 8:02Speaker 3: that in 2010, all right, I was part of an
- 8:05Speaker 3: interview with you. I won't even go back to that
- 8:09Speaker 3: interview because I embarrassed myself because I sang a edited
- 8:13Speaker 3: version of So Sick to You.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Oh, wow. I just.
- 8:17Speaker 3: It was crash and burn.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Did I enjoy it at the time?
- 8:21Speaker 3: You know what? You actually may or may not have
- 8:24Speaker 3: said that you... Cassidy?
- 8:26Speaker 7: I just wanted to say that when I found out,
- 8:29Speaker 7: I was really excited that you guys did an interview
- 8:31Speaker 7: all those years ago.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Yes, 16 years ago we did an interview.
- 8:34Speaker 7: And one thing about me is I'm BIS, which is
- 8:37Speaker 7: South African for nosy.
- 8:40Speaker 4: So, Mr. Wasey, if you will click on a little
- 8:44Speaker 4: track on your stacks... Over there. It's called Cassidy's Cliff.
- 8:51Speaker 2: No.
- 8:52Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 8:52Speaker 7: No.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Oh, wait a minute.
- 8:54Speaker 3: How would you?
- 8:55Speaker 6: <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL> <HAL>
- 8:57Speaker 6: I'm just a girl.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I feel like Jon Bernthal. No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 9:02Speaker 4: I got the clip of the interview.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah. We have to play it out.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You got to play it out.
- 9:09Speaker 3: My mouth's dry.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 9:10Speaker 4: Wait.
- 9:13Speaker 3: My mouth is so dry.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:15Speaker 3: This was 16 years ago. I didn't even know how
- 9:17Speaker 3: I sound.
- 9:18Speaker 1: We were all different people 16 years ago. Okay, no
- 9:21Speaker 1: one's judging.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Here we go. Cassidy's clip, breastplate.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I can't believe you, Cassidy. I adapted one of your songs,
- 9:28Speaker 3: So Sick.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I'd love to hear it. I would love to hear it.
- 9:30Speaker 6: I'm so sick of Tracy, so sad and low. So
- 9:36Speaker 6: tired of wishing I would just grow. Oh, I'm so
- 9:40Speaker 6: sick of Tracy and her big balls. So why is
- 9:44Speaker 6: this gun still on the radio? Kent is actually a person. Wow.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Don't call me. I'll call you.
- 9:54Speaker 3: All right.
- 9:56Speaker 4: You know, I just, I thought just.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Wait okay i said no one's judging i'm completely.
- 10:02Speaker 5: A million percent judging that was 16 years ago it.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Was it was 16 years ago how did you find
- 10:11Speaker 3: that that was Wow.
- 10:12Speaker 1: What was that word? Did you use it?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Uh, bus.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Bus.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Bus.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 5: I know if you bus people.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Oh my word.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Okay. Thank you for that. That was 16 years ago.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And that was for, and it's a crazy cause that colleague,
- 10:29Speaker 3: we still work together. It's Tracy Lang on that time. And,
- 10:31Speaker 3: but wow. Thanks for that. I was going to ask
- 10:34Speaker 3: you about some other things now. And now I'm like,
- 10:36Speaker 3: I lost my train of thought. Uh, the great thing about,
- 10:38Speaker 3: about you all the way in the beginning, uh, When
- 10:40Speaker 3: I told people that I'm going to chat to you today,
- 10:42Speaker 3: they're always like, oh, Neo, Neo, Neo, Neo. And not
- 10:45Speaker 3: a lot of people know about the origin story is
- 10:47Speaker 3: how you got the name Neo. And I had to
- 10:49Speaker 3: tell them the story because, of course, I'm just I'm
- 10:52Speaker 3: a fan in terms of not only the Matrix, but
- 10:54Speaker 3: of your music. And then there was a connection. So
- 10:57Speaker 3: is it true that the Neo connection came because you
- 11:00Speaker 3: could write a song in under under five minutes?
- 11:02Speaker 4: Yes.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Yes.
- 11:03Speaker 5: In the beginning of my career. I didn't have a
- 11:06Speaker 5: lot of money, and we all know studio time costs money.
- 11:09Speaker 5: So if I only had enough money to pay for
- 11:12Speaker 5: 20 minutes, 30 minutes, I had to get the most
- 11:14Speaker 5: out of that 20, 30 minutes. So if you gave
- 11:16Speaker 5: me 30 minutes in the studio, I could give you
- 11:18Speaker 5: 12 to 13 songs.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Just ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Wow.
- 11:22Speaker 5: And Big D, Dion Evans, may he rest in peace,
- 11:26Speaker 5: he was the first person to say, man, you're like
- 11:28Speaker 5: the Neo of the music industry, basically saying that I
- 11:30Speaker 5: could do things within music their regular people couldn't do
- 11:33Speaker 5: the way neo could do things within the matrix their
- 11:36Speaker 5: regular people couldn't do and that's that's where the name came.
- 11:38Speaker 2: From that's incredible i love that i'll never get sick
- 11:42Speaker 2: of that story because i'm a massive matrix fan and
- 11:44Speaker 2: a neo fan and then you get that together and
- 11:46Speaker 2: that's and it was stylized because of course there's that
- 11:48Speaker 2: that center of you with a little hip-hop and r &
- 11:50Speaker 2: b so you had to add a yo Yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Well, I mean, we had to change the spelling of
- 11:54Speaker 5: the name because I didn't want, you know, the people
- 11:55Speaker 5: at The Matrix to come looking for me.
- 11:58Speaker 4: For sure.
- 11:58Speaker 5: And plus, if you Google NEO, you know, the white
- 12:01Speaker 5: guy comes up. Shout out to the white guy, Keanu Reeves.
- 12:05Speaker 5: I'm a huge Keanu Reeves fan, by the way. You know,
- 12:07Speaker 5: we just didn't want no confusion. That's all, you know.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You're looking for the right NEO, depending on which one
- 12:12Speaker 1: you're looking for.
- 12:12Speaker 7: I must say, though, it's also quite interesting because in
- 12:15Speaker 7: the Susutu culture, it's pronounced NEO from Deneo, which actually
- 12:19Speaker 7: means gift.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Which is really cool yeah okay so it's just like
- 12:23Speaker 4: interesting all.
- 12:24Speaker 5: The universe makes no mistakes right I will take that.
- 12:28Speaker 3: The universe makes no mistakes did you see the clip
- 12:30Speaker 3: I played.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That wasn't the universe. That was you, sir. That was you.
- 12:36Speaker 4: If we're not laughing, we're learning.
- 12:37Speaker 5: The universe is like, hey, don't blame me for that.
- 12:40Speaker 4: That was your doing.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Oh, my word. But with regard to the other parts,
- 12:44Speaker 3: I mean, you've written so many songs for so many artists.
- 12:47Speaker 3: And I always wonder, I mean, you can churn out
- 12:48Speaker 3: these songs so quickly. But I mean, how do you
- 12:50Speaker 3: wake up and decide that I'm writing this song? Rihanna
- 12:54Speaker 3: is going to be good for this. Beyonce is going
- 12:56Speaker 3: to be good for this one. Celine Dion is going
- 12:58Speaker 3: to be good for that. How do you even do that?
- 13:00Speaker 5: So in a lot of instances, it's about the way
- 13:02Speaker 5: the song is actually produced. When I mean the way
- 13:05Speaker 5: the song is produced, like for example, Rihanna's people came
- 13:09Speaker 5: to me and said, hey, we're putting together this album
- 13:11Speaker 5: for her. We would love for you to be a
- 13:12Speaker 5: part of it. We're going to put you in a
- 13:14Speaker 5: studio for her from this day to this day. And
- 13:17Speaker 5: then whatever songs come out of those days go straight
- 13:20Speaker 5: to Rihanna. There's no You know what I mean? They
- 13:22Speaker 5: get first, first right refusal is what they call it.
- 13:24Speaker 5: So if she doesn't like them, if the team doesn't
- 13:26Speaker 5: like them, then at that, at that.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Point I can do whatever I want with them.
- 13:29Speaker 5: But initially they go to the person that, you know,
- 13:31Speaker 5: paid for it, said studio time.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So there's that.
- 13:34Speaker 5: But then if I'm in a studio by myself and
- 13:36Speaker 5: I'm just writing and I write something, you know, initially
- 13:39Speaker 5: I'm always writing for me if I'm in there by myself.
- 13:41Speaker 5: But if I write something and I listen back to
- 13:42Speaker 5: it and go, man, I feel like, I feel like
- 13:44Speaker 5: Rihanna will really kill this. Then I might call her like, Hey,
- 13:47Speaker 5: I got something that I want you to hear. If
- 13:48Speaker 5: she likes it, she takes it. If not, then, you know,
- 13:50Speaker 5: I figure out something else with it.
- 13:52Speaker 3: But that's normally the way it goes. It's a few
- 13:55Speaker 3: different ways that it can happen. But this is, I mean,
- 13:57Speaker 3: it's so cool. I mean, you can keep all these
- 13:59Speaker 3: songs to yourself, but you can write for other people.
- 14:01Speaker 3: And I mean, you've already written for some of the best.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I mean, Beyonce. I actually heard you sing Irreplaceable on
- 14:08Speaker 3: another interview, which is amazing. And I think... In that interview,
- 14:13Speaker 3: you were quite clear. You said a woman needs to
- 14:15Speaker 3: sing this song, right?
- 14:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:16Speaker 5: I wrote that song initially with the intention of singing
- 14:18Speaker 5: it myself. And me and Stargate, we all kind of
- 14:22Speaker 5: came to the, had an epiphany all at the same time.
- 14:24Speaker 5: Like the reason that we really, really, really like this
- 14:27Speaker 5: song but don't love it is because this song does
- 14:29Speaker 5: not need to be sang by a man.
- 14:31Speaker 1: This needs to be a woman's message.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So once we got it to the right woman, Beyonce,
- 14:37Speaker 5: the song became what it was supposed to be.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And yeah, the rest is history.
- 14:40Speaker 3: It's just so good I love I love these these
- 14:43Speaker 3: facets of your music career leading up to this because
- 14:46Speaker 3: I think it just adds so much richness to the
- 14:47Speaker 3: music like even your video because of you you were barefoot.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Yeah yeah that wasn't that wasn't planned I literally danced
- 14:57Speaker 5: out of my shoes and they just kept it yeah
- 15:01Speaker 5: so first and foremost the shoes that I was wearing
- 15:03Speaker 5: were like a couple sizes too big but it was
- 15:05Speaker 5: it was getting late and we didn't have time to
- 15:07Speaker 5: go get any more shoes so I was just I'll
- 15:08Speaker 5: just put them on we'll be fine and I'm dancing
- 15:10Speaker 5: And one shoe came off, and then I'm like, all right,
- 15:12Speaker 5: I just kicked the other one off, and I just
- 15:13Speaker 5: kept it going.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And they wound up keeping it. They said it was
- 15:16Speaker 1: a very organic moment.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:18Speaker 5: And I'm like, if y'all say so, it looks like
- 15:20Speaker 5: my shoes are too big, and they came off. But
- 15:23Speaker 5: however y'all want to paint it, fine. They kept it, and... Yeah,
- 15:26Speaker 5: that's one of the parts of that video that people
- 15:27Speaker 5: talk about.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Yes.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Where'd your shoes go? Oh, well.
- 15:29Speaker 4: But what a conversation starter now.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Yeah, of course.
- 15:32Speaker 5: Moral of the story is don't dance in shoes that
- 15:35Speaker 5: are too big for you.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They might come off.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Story of my life.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Wrong time.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true. A lot of shoes.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Just have an inner soul in your bag.
- 15:43Speaker 3: At all times. So there's another little facet that I
- 15:46Speaker 3: think we need to revisit is that your first Grammy. Yes.
- 15:49Speaker 3: You were not technically present at your first Grammy and
- 15:52Speaker 3: you couldn't even say a speech and it was not
- 15:54Speaker 3: even a televised Grammy. Can we talk about that for
- 15:56Speaker 3: a moment so we can just get over it and
- 15:58Speaker 3: we can move forward?
- 15:59Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 16:00Speaker 5: So mind you, the Grammy is the one that you
- 16:02Speaker 5: dream about, right? As an artist, you dream about walking
- 16:06Speaker 5: across the Grammy stage and. thanking your mom and the
- 16:09Speaker 5: whole nine you write the speech and you put it
- 16:11Speaker 5: in your pocket just in case right so i'm thinking
- 16:13Speaker 5: that so when when i learned that i was nominated
- 16:15Speaker 5: i'm i'm over the moon already like i'm nominated for
- 16:17Speaker 5: a grammy oh wow so we're at the grammys for
- 16:20Speaker 5: the first time i'm doing the red carpet people ask
- 16:22Speaker 5: me questions how do you feel and in the midst
- 16:24Speaker 5: of these interviews a ghost just whizzes by my head
- 16:27Speaker 5: and goes.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Congratulations just won a grammy what and i'm like what God. Hello.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Thank you. Whoever that was.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Wow. They told me that I won before I even
- 16:40Speaker 5: got in the building. And the reason they did that
- 16:42Speaker 5: is because, and I learned that this day too, there
- 16:45Speaker 5: are Grammy categories that are not televised. I had won
- 16:49Speaker 5: in a category that wasn't televised.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Do you know why?
- 16:52Speaker 5: I mean, I guess because there's so many categories, they
- 16:55Speaker 5: only televise a certain amount of the certain ones, the
- 16:58Speaker 5: most popular ones, I guess, or something like that.
- 17:00Speaker 1: So anyway.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Okay.
- 17:01Speaker 5: I had won a Grammy, but I didn't get to
- 17:03Speaker 5: walk across stage, didn't get to thank my mom, didn't
- 17:05Speaker 5: get to thank God, didn't get to do the whole, wow,
- 17:08Speaker 5: this thing's heavy.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I didn't get to do that part.
- 17:11Speaker 5: And mind you, I've won three Grammys in my career
- 17:14Speaker 5: and I've yet to win in a category that is.
- 17:16Speaker 4: That is crazy.
- 17:18Speaker 1: It's okay.
- 17:19Speaker 4: It just means I got more work to do.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It's all right.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I'll figure it out. I mean, at least you have
- 17:23Speaker 3: three speeches that you can work from now.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Easily, yeah.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Right?
- 17:27Speaker 5: I'm going to mail them into one big, long speech
- 17:29Speaker 5: and hope that they don't, you know, try to play
- 17:31Speaker 5: that music to get you up. No, I'm like, listen,
- 17:33Speaker 5: I've been waiting a long time to do these speeches.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Y'all not going to play me off, okay? Shut the
- 17:38Speaker 5: music off. We're going to be here a while. Everybody
- 17:40Speaker 5: sit down. Nope, sit down, sir. Sit down.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Sit down, okay?
- 17:44Speaker 5: I got some names to rattle off here.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I'll do it as fast as I can. Have a seat.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Yeah. It's going to happen just like that. I cannot wait.
- 17:51Speaker 3: And it will definitely happen.
- 17:52Speaker 1: They're never going to let me do it now because
- 17:54Speaker 1: I just said that.
- 17:54Speaker 3: No, we manifested it, okay? That's why. That's why we
- 17:57Speaker 3: did it live on the radio. That's how it works.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I like it.
- 18:00Speaker 3: But just, you know, I know you've, it just feels
- 18:02Speaker 3: like you've done it all. Honestly, the Grammys and the
- 18:04Speaker 3: writing for Incredible People and the songs that you put
- 18:07Speaker 3: out there. And another thing is that you've never been
- 18:09Speaker 3: genre sensitive. Like you've just, you've crossed over because you
- 18:12Speaker 3: know music is a vehicle for expression and you have
- 18:14Speaker 3: never seen the gates open. of dance, pop, R & B, hip-hop.
- 18:19Speaker 3: You walked through all of them because you're supposed to, right?
- 18:21Speaker 5: Well, I think the one line that carries through all
- 18:26Speaker 5: of those gates is melody. There's melody in all of
- 18:29Speaker 5: these different genres of music. The genres are just ways
- 18:32Speaker 5: for people to compartmentalize, but at the end of the day,
- 18:36Speaker 5: it's all just music. It's all music at the end
- 18:39Speaker 5: of the day, and that's the way that I view it.
- 18:40Speaker 5: I don't see category. I see melody... I see lyric.
- 18:44Speaker 5: I see the things that connect us, you know, the relatable,
- 18:49Speaker 5: that song that you listen to and you go, yeah,
- 18:51Speaker 5: I've been there.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I felt that before. That can be a pop song,
- 18:56Speaker 5: a R & B song, a hip hop song. It
- 18:58Speaker 5: doesn't matter. So that's the way that I've always, that's
- 19:01Speaker 5: the way that my mom kind of showed me how
- 19:02Speaker 5: to listen to music. Growing up in Las Vegas, my
- 19:06Speaker 5: mom would come home, you know, super late every night
- 19:08Speaker 5: from working and she would bring a different genre of
- 19:11Speaker 5: music home with her every night. And that would be
- 19:12Speaker 5: our time together because she, you know, she worked all
- 19:14Speaker 5: day and I'm at school. So the only time we
- 19:16Speaker 5: really got to see each other was at night before
- 19:18Speaker 5: I had to go to bed to go to school
- 19:19Speaker 5: the next day. So she would come and she would
- 19:21Speaker 5: listen to this. So she would bring home, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 5: first it was, you know, the OJs and the Temptations,
- 19:26Speaker 5: a lot of R & B. And then it was
- 19:28Speaker 5: like Wayne Newton and Reba McEntire and the Rat Pack
- 19:32Speaker 5: and all that kind of stuff. And it just, I
- 19:34Speaker 5: just locked into the melody of it. It wasn't so much,
- 19:37Speaker 5: at that time, I didn't even know what a genre was.
- 19:39Speaker 5: It was just this music, that music, this artist, that artist.
- 19:42Speaker 5: And that's the way that I've always viewed it. So
- 19:45Speaker 5: when I did a dance song or a pop song
- 19:48Speaker 5: or a country song or whatever the case may be,
- 19:50Speaker 5: to me it's just a song, man. I'll let y'all
- 19:52Speaker 5: work out what radio station should play it and how
- 19:56Speaker 5: and all of that. I'm just going to do music.
- 19:58Speaker 4: That's what it is.
- 19:59Speaker 3: And that's the message that I try to give to
- 20:01Speaker 3: every single artist when they try to perform for a
- 20:04Speaker 3: certain purpose, when they try to write for a certain purpose.
- 20:07Speaker 3: And I always say that the authenticity comes from you
- 20:09Speaker 3: telling a story. You have the melody of your life
- 20:12Speaker 3: that rings in your ears all the time. And that's
- 20:13Speaker 3: what you write from. You don't write for, I hope
- 20:15Speaker 3: that KFM 94.5 will play this song. You write because
- 20:19Speaker 3: there's a vehicle for you to express yourself. And that's
- 20:21Speaker 3: why I'm glad that you reiterate that because someone as
- 20:24Speaker 3: successful as you can just, you provided that information in
- 20:28Speaker 3: the most credible way and they need to hear this.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Indeed.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Indeed.
- 20:32Speaker 5: It's not about, I think that I keep getting asked
- 20:35Speaker 5: the question, How do you know when a song is
- 20:37Speaker 5: a hit? And I will be the first to tell you,
- 20:39Speaker 5: I have no idea what a hit is.
- 20:42Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 20:43Speaker 5: I'll write what makes sense to me, what feels good
- 20:45Speaker 5: to me, and sit somewhere and pray that the rest
- 20:48Speaker 5: of the world agrees. That's pretty much how I do it.
- 20:50Speaker 5: I don't know if there is a set recipe for
- 20:53Speaker 5: a hit song. Because, I mean, you all work in
- 20:57Speaker 5: radio and in the music, so y'all know that there
- 20:59Speaker 5: are a multitude of things that go into what makes
- 21:01Speaker 5: a song a hit.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 21:04Speaker 5: The quality of the song is not always the biggest
- 21:06Speaker 5: piece of that pie. Like, let's be honest. You've heard
- 21:08Speaker 5: crap songs go to number one. You've heard amazing songs
- 21:10Speaker 5: not get the time, not get the light of day. So,
- 21:13Speaker 5: with that being said, I don't go into the studio
- 21:15Speaker 5: and say, today I'm going to write a hit. You
- 21:18Speaker 5: cut yourself off at the feet when you do that.
- 21:21Speaker 5: You go in a studio and you let your artistic
- 21:23Speaker 5: integrity take you wherever it's going to take you. You
- 21:25Speaker 5: do what feels good to you and you rock like that.
- 21:28Speaker 5: That authenticity, as you put it, that is what creates
- 21:33Speaker 5: a great song. And from great song, then you give
- 21:35Speaker 5: it to the people that turn it into a hit.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:38Speaker 4: That's the way that works. Or at least that's the
- 21:40Speaker 4: way it works for me.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yeah, the people always choose their heroes.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Yeah, man.
- 21:43Speaker 1: You can't force it. Yeah, you can't.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Man, it's been countless times that I sit in a
- 21:47Speaker 5: studio and just toil over a song for like a
- 21:50Speaker 5: week and then play it for somebody and they go, oh,
- 21:53Speaker 5: that's nice.
- 21:55Speaker 4: And then I'll play him the song that I just
- 21:56Speaker 4: kind of... You really feel.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:58Speaker 5: And then I'll play the song that I just kind
- 21:59Speaker 5: of crapped out in 15 minutes.
- 22:00Speaker 1: They go, oh, my God. You're a genius. And I'm like, wait, what?
- 22:05Speaker 4: Wait, no, play the other one again.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Do you not hear... The blood, sweat, and tears are
- 22:09Speaker 1: winning to this song.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's nice.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Yeah, play the other one.
- 22:14Speaker 4: You never know.
- 22:15Speaker 1: You never know.
- 22:16Speaker 5: You just got to, again, you got to do what
- 22:17Speaker 5: feels good to you and let the people pick their heroes,
- 22:20Speaker 5: as you said.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it works. And we have so many heroes in
- 22:23Speaker 3: your catalog of music that you provided to us. And
- 22:25Speaker 3: we're looking forward to more of them. For those who
- 22:27Speaker 3: haven't picked up Highway 79, they have to because I
- 22:29Speaker 3: love the inspiration behind it. It's so good. Your voice
- 22:33Speaker 3: pretty much suits any music. I cannot wait for you
- 22:35Speaker 3: to hear, if you haven't already, I'm a Piano.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Oh, I have.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Can you imagine? I have. A Neo Amapiano song.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Listen. Get out of my phone, bro. Oh, wait.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I wonder if Black Coffee hasn't, or DJ Maporisa.
- 22:55Speaker 1: I have some things in the works with some people.
- 22:58Speaker 6: What?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I have some things in the works.
- 23:00Speaker 4: What do creatives say when they post something on Instagram?
- 23:02Speaker 4: Watch this space.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Is that it?
- 23:03Speaker 4: Is that the hook? Watch the speech.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Well, I feel like we just dropped an exclusive now.
- 23:08Speaker 3: I feel like that's happened.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Okay.
- 23:11Speaker 3: There's a hint.
- 23:11Speaker 5: I'll say coming soon. Just keep your eyes to the sky,
- 23:15Speaker 5: ears to the ground. You will hear me, see me,
- 23:16Speaker 5: I will be around.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Don't threaten me with a good time.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I know you walked in, but there's an entire champagne
- 23:24Speaker 3: wall behind you because we're not going to see you
- 23:26Speaker 3: on Sunday. Oh, wow. And Sunday is your birthday.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yes, indeed. Yes, indeed.
- 23:31Speaker 3: So just so that we make it official, because you
- 23:34Speaker 3: may be on a flight somewhere or very busy. We
- 23:36Speaker 3: just want to say happy birthday. And I mean, a
- 23:39Speaker 3: very early happy birthday. Thank you so much for just,
- 23:42Speaker 3: you know, your kind soul. The fact that this industry
- 23:45Speaker 3: you've been here, you've been super successful, but you've shared
- 23:47Speaker 3: so much today, which is a testament to just who
- 23:49Speaker 3: you are. And I just hope that the people who
- 23:52Speaker 3: connect with you can just have a couple of words
- 23:55Speaker 3: that will affirm you on Sunday and just say that
- 23:57Speaker 3: the real champagne life is The people that you hold close,
- 24:01Speaker 3: that you can toast to, that say, you know, I
- 24:03Speaker 3: know you, who you are behind all of this. And
- 24:06Speaker 3: those are the people that I want to connect with
- 24:08Speaker 3: you on Sunday. So happy birthday. And thank you so
- 24:10Speaker 3: much for your authenticity and for the hits that you
- 24:13Speaker 3: didn't know were hits.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I appreciate you, man. Thank you, brother. Appreciate that love.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Love you. And enjoy tomorrow night. I just hope that
- 24:20Speaker 3: you have a good opening line. That comes through On
