- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, home of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: modern white tail hunter, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:15Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan, and today in the show, we've got Adam Hayes,
- 0:18Speaker 1: big buck Killer from Ohio, and we're running him through
- 0:21Speaker 1: the what would you Do gauntlet, posing him some of
- 0:23Speaker 1: the most difficult deer hunting scenarios and seeing how he'd
- 0:27Speaker 1: handle it. All right, welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast,
- 0:41Speaker 1: brought to you by First Light, and today we are
- 0:44Speaker 1: continuing our series of what would you Do episodes. Now
- 0:48Speaker 1: you're probably familiar with this format. Now we started last summer,
- 0:52Speaker 1: we did a handful last year, We've kicked off a
- 0:54Speaker 1: few more this year, and now for the month of August,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I want to do a four week run of these
- 1:00Speaker 1: leading into opening Days for so many people because I
- 1:04Speaker 1: think this format, in which we pose hypothetical scenarios to
- 1:09Speaker 1: an expert deer hunter and then find out how they
- 1:11Speaker 1: would deal with him, I think it gives us a
- 1:13Speaker 1: different level of insight. It gives us a different view
- 1:16Speaker 1: into how these people do what they do, and at
- 1:19Speaker 1: least for myself, I'm finding particularly interesting and fun I'm
- 1:23Speaker 1: hoping that's the case for you guys. And our guest
- 1:25Speaker 1: today is someone who I think we all want a
- 1:27Speaker 1: better view into because of the kind of unbelievable success
- 1:31Speaker 1: he has. This is Adam Hayes. Of course, he's the
- 1:34Speaker 1: host of Team two hundred TV. He's been on UH
- 1:37Speaker 1: many other shows like white Tail Addictions. He is the
- 1:42Speaker 1: UH he runs the moon Guide Company app product all
- 1:47Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. He's been targeting big mature white
- 1:50Speaker 1: tails for a long time now, and he's kind of
- 1:52Speaker 1: made a name for himself by being one of the
- 1:55Speaker 1: few people to really target the biggest of the big
- 1:59Speaker 1: white tail. He has four two white tails to his name.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And you know, whether or not you care about inches,
- 2:05Speaker 1: I don't think it's something that anyone has to care about.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But if that's your thing, that's cool. But I think
- 2:11Speaker 1: regardless of two hundred or twenty inches, what Adam has
- 2:13Speaker 1: done is he's found a way to find in target
- 2:17Speaker 1: the hardest dear to kill in any given area. And
- 2:20Speaker 1: that's something that can be applicable to you whether you're
- 2:22Speaker 1: in Iowa Jason two internes deer or in Maine Jason
- 2:26Speaker 1: ten inch deer um. We can learn something from Adam
- 2:29Speaker 1: because the same things required to kill that tough buck
- 2:32Speaker 1: in Iowa, similar things need to be applied to kill
- 2:35Speaker 1: that old but smaller deer in Michigan or Pennsylvania or Georgia, whatever.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So that's the kind of stuff I wanted to learn
- 2:41Speaker 1: from Adam. Today, we're gonna give him a whole bunch
- 2:44Speaker 1: of different questions, a whole bunch of different specific scenarios,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and see how he would handle them. I also brought
- 2:50Speaker 1: on a guest host today. I brought my guy, Tony
- 2:53Speaker 1: Peterson onto the main show. Of course, he hosts the
- 2:55Speaker 1: Foundations podcast on Tuesdays, which I hope you were listening
- 2:59Speaker 1: to because they're really freaking good. But I also want
- 3:01Speaker 1: to bring Tony on for some of these what would
- 3:03Speaker 1: you do episodes because he's got, you know, all sorts
- 3:06Speaker 1: of other crazy things going in his head that I'm
- 3:09Speaker 1: not always thinking about that I thought would be great
- 3:11Speaker 1: to throw at these guys and give just a little
- 3:14Speaker 1: bit more diversity to the kinds of questions we're asking
- 3:17Speaker 1: the things we're thinking about in the topics we cover.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So today Tony and I are gasking Adam what he
- 3:23Speaker 1: would do and some tough white tail scenarios. I think
- 3:27Speaker 1: you're gonna enjoy this one. I hope you do. So
- 3:30Speaker 1: let's get to it and find out what Adam Hayes
- 3:33Speaker 1: would do. All right, back with me on the podcast. Today,
- 3:39Speaker 1: we've got Adam Hayes. Adam, welcome back to the show.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Good to be here, man, I appreciate the invite. How
- 3:48Speaker 1: are things that wired to Hunt World headquarters this morning?
- 3:52Speaker 1: They're good, they're good. Uh did some some bean field
- 3:56Speaker 1: glassing last night. Uh. Got got a new bow coming
- 4:01Speaker 1: in today I'll be shooting. So the white tail season
- 4:03Speaker 1: is approaching quickly and I'm I'm getting excited. So this
- 4:07Speaker 1: podcast is well timed to help scratch the itch that
- 4:09Speaker 1: is very, very profound right now, how about you? Yeah?
- 4:14Speaker 1: And summer, the summer is flown by. I don't know
- 4:18Speaker 1: if it's because drug last year with the whole you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: COVID deal, and this one is just flying by. But
- 4:24Speaker 1: I cannot believe it's August already. It's crazy. It's come fast,
- 4:29Speaker 1: that's for sure. So here's here's something I want to do, Adam.
- 4:33Speaker 1: This is gonna be a little bit unique compared to
- 4:36Speaker 1: the past couple of podcasts we've done together. Uh. The
- 4:38Speaker 1: idea here is what I'm calling that what would you do? Gauntlet?
- 4:44Speaker 1: So instead of me asking you what do you think
- 4:48Speaker 1: about scrapes or do you like grunt tubes? Instead, I'm
- 4:52Speaker 1: gonna lay out a very specific scenario. Basically, I'm gonna
- 4:56Speaker 1: tell you a story and ask you what you would
- 4:59Speaker 1: do in that s situation, how you would handle this scenario, etcetera, etcetera.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And these aren't gonna be softballs. These are gonna be
- 5:06Speaker 1: mostly they won't be softballs. They're mostly gonna be tricky scenarios.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And how many lifelines am I gonna get? Yeah, we'll
- 5:14Speaker 1: let your phone a friend just one time, and I
- 5:19Speaker 1: think it's gonna get us an interesting look into how
- 5:21Speaker 1: you do this stuff, which you obviously do so well.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And uh, and also with me to help with this
- 5:26Speaker 1: as my buddy and co host and many of these
- 5:28Speaker 1: Tony Peterson. So Tony is going to throw you some
- 5:31Speaker 1: zingers as well. So are you ready for this gauntlet? Man?
- 5:38Speaker 1: You got me nervous? Now I think you can handle.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Yeah,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I trust you are, So Tony. I'm gonna lead off here,
- 5:49Speaker 1: but feel free to jump in when you've got one. Um,
- 5:52Speaker 1: here's my first scenario, Adam. And this is something that
- 5:55Speaker 1: I know you're familiar with. You've you've dealt with this scenario,
- 5:59Speaker 1: but I want to really get into the nitty gritty
- 6:01Speaker 1: of of what you do. So imagine it is August
- 6:04Speaker 1: one and you're down in Ohio, maybe like central Ohio,
- 6:08Speaker 1: southern Ohio. You're driving the back roads. It's the evening,
- 6:12Speaker 1: it's nice and warm, and you are just driving around
- 6:16Speaker 1: your binoculars on the passenger seat next to you. And
- 6:19Speaker 1: this is a new area. You've never been in this zone.
- 6:22Speaker 1: For whatever reason, you just decided I don't gonna take
- 6:24Speaker 1: a drive through a new spot and see what's out here.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And while you're driving these back roads it's the last
- 6:30Speaker 1: hour of daylight. You see that big old cage lift
- 6:33Speaker 1: up in the back of the bean field and you
- 6:35Speaker 1: slam on your brakes or you quietly touch on the brakes,
- 6:39Speaker 1: slow down, pulp your binoculars, and you think, wow, that
- 6:43Speaker 1: is uh, that is a buck I'm interested in, Like
- 6:46Speaker 1: that's a potential two type deer or just a mega
- 6:50Speaker 1: giant that definitely gets your heart beating really fast. You
- 6:53Speaker 1: see it that night it's you know, at this point,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I don't Let's say it's nine o'clock in the evening.
- 7:00Speaker 1: What do you do next? That's as far as I'm
- 7:02Speaker 1: getting you. You see the buck, What do you do
- 7:04Speaker 1: in the next half hour? What do you do the
- 7:07Speaker 1: next day? How do you proceed in this situation when
- 7:10Speaker 1: you're in a brand new spot. You've just seen this
- 7:12Speaker 1: two type buck, but you have you have no permission
- 7:15Speaker 1: to access anywhere in the area. What are your next steps? Well,
- 7:21Speaker 1: I mean that's excuse me, that's half the battle right there,
- 7:24Speaker 1: is just finding a big deer like that to hunt
- 7:26Speaker 1: because they're not on every farm. Um, so you know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: being able to locate one or no, you know, the
- 7:35Speaker 1: general area where one is at is like said, it's
- 7:38Speaker 1: half the battle. So I mean the first thing, obviously
- 7:42Speaker 1: I'm going to do is is, you know, try to
- 7:45Speaker 1: get some landowner information and see, um, you know who
- 7:50Speaker 1: owns the property and get a get a look at it,
- 7:53Speaker 1: you know from an aerial standpoint, to see what the
- 7:56Speaker 1: area looks like. Um, it's kind of a catch twenty
- 8:01Speaker 1: two that time of the year. I mean, I know
- 8:04Speaker 1: everybody's seeing the you know, the velvet giants in the
- 8:09Speaker 1: batch of the groups in the summertime, and you know,
- 8:12Speaker 1: the most most of those deer that have been doing
- 8:15Speaker 1: the same thing, you know, all summer long in the
- 8:18Speaker 1: same fields. Once you know, they shed their velvet, they're
- 8:21Speaker 1: gonna be gone. You know. Sometimes they'll be close by,
- 8:25Speaker 1: sometimes they're gonna be a couple of miles away. So
- 8:28Speaker 1: that's a really difficult time to see one and then
- 8:32Speaker 1: try to plan on, you know, if you can obtain permission,
- 8:36Speaker 1: you know, hoping that that gear is going to be
- 8:38Speaker 1: there once season rolls around is really a you know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: a roll of the dice. You know, I'm a firm
- 8:45Speaker 1: believer that you know, deer, especially mature gear, have their
- 8:49Speaker 1: summer feeding patterns, and once that velvet comes off and
- 8:54Speaker 1: they know, you know, they know what's coming there gone
- 8:58Speaker 1: and they're vanished and they're back to their core areas,
- 9:00Speaker 1: which you know could be close. You know, it could
- 9:03Speaker 1: be on that same farm, or it could've relocated deer
- 9:07Speaker 1: you know, over two miles away once they shed their velvet,
- 9:11Speaker 1: when they've gone back to their core area. So it's
- 9:14Speaker 1: really tricky situation. But I mean, being in an unknown area,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know, what more can you do other than you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: do a little homework, find out who the landowners are.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Like I said, get a look at the aerial and
- 9:28Speaker 1: see what the surrounding farms look like. See what the
- 9:32Speaker 1: crop route, you know, crops look like. You know, because
- 9:34Speaker 1: those big deer um that time of the year are
- 9:38Speaker 1: going to be focused, at least in my part of
- 9:40Speaker 1: the country, they're focused on you know, slavings that are
- 9:43Speaker 1: still green. So um, that's a key place to look
- 9:48Speaker 1: if you are able to get permission and to focus on.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But you know, there's so many different things changed in
- 9:54Speaker 1: that time of the year. Two with acorns are starting
- 9:57Speaker 1: to drop, farmers are starting to harvest rops. So I mean,
- 10:01Speaker 1: food sources can change on almost a daily basis at
- 10:05Speaker 1: that time of the year or two. So, I mean
- 10:06Speaker 1: there's a lot of variables to take into consideration. But
- 10:11Speaker 1: I guess to try to answer your basic questions, first
- 10:16Speaker 1: thing I'm gonna do is, you know, see who I
- 10:19Speaker 1: need to talk to and see if I can get permission.
- 10:22Speaker 1: What what's the like, how many pieces are you going
- 10:26Speaker 1: to try to get permission on. Let's say, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 1: there's there's the there's the piece that you saw the
- 10:31Speaker 1: deer on, but then there's also you know, maybe several
- 10:33Speaker 1: other adjacent farms that have got good cover and good
- 10:37Speaker 1: food on them too, And like you said, there's probably
- 10:39Speaker 1: gonna be some kind of shift. So when you see
- 10:42Speaker 1: a buck like that, how wide of a net do
- 10:44Speaker 1: you cast? Are you gonna go and try to get
- 10:45Speaker 1: permission on every piece of property within a mile of
- 10:49Speaker 1: it that you know has a good cover on it
- 10:51Speaker 1: or something like that, Like, how how much do you
- 10:54Speaker 1: try to put in your favoritehead of the season knowing
- 10:56Speaker 1: that stuff is gonna change? Or is it? Man, I'm
- 10:58Speaker 1: gonna get permission on one piece and that you know,
- 11:00Speaker 1: take a fire and see what happens. Well, it seems
- 11:04Speaker 1: like this days you're lucky if you can get one spot.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean, obviously the more of the better, But I've
- 11:09Speaker 1: always been a firm believer that I'd rather have the
- 11:11Speaker 1: right five acres than the wrong five hundreds. So just
- 11:15Speaker 1: because you've got access to you know, you know, two
- 11:20Speaker 1: square miles of property doesn't mean that you're going to
- 11:23Speaker 1: have that one key spot that you need. So, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I've I've always focused my efforts around, you know, sanctuaries
- 11:35Speaker 1: where deer can get away from the majority of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: hunting pressure and get age on them. And you know
- 11:40Speaker 1: that's normally where you're gonna find a really big deer
- 11:43Speaker 1: like that as close to some type of sanctuary, whether
- 11:46Speaker 1: it's farm it's never been hunted, or you know, city
- 11:50Speaker 1: limits where there's no hunting. But you know, that's always
- 11:54Speaker 1: in the back of my mind as far as you
- 11:56Speaker 1: know a specific area, you know, where where I would
- 12:00Speaker 1: think a big buck could get away from uh hunting pressure.
- 12:05Speaker 1: You know, if there's a sanctuary close by, that's probably
- 12:07Speaker 1: gonna be one of the first things I'm going to
- 12:09Speaker 1: look for. And you know, you start knocking on doors
- 12:12Speaker 1: and you knock on that one door or where you
- 12:16Speaker 1: know we've never let anybody hunt, you know, where we
- 12:21Speaker 1: feed the deer. You know, you know it's a safe spot.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Even if you can't get permission for that spot, you know,
- 12:30Speaker 1: chances are that's going to be a good bet for
- 12:33Speaker 1: deer in that area to you know, funnel to once
- 12:36Speaker 1: the pressure is on. So just knowing a spot like
- 12:39Speaker 1: that and where it's at and maybe having permission adjacent
- 12:42Speaker 1: to it or close to it, you know, Um, that's
- 12:46Speaker 1: a that's always been a key with me, is finding
- 12:49Speaker 1: those little sanctuaries where the deer can get away from
- 12:51Speaker 1: the hunting pressure, because it takes four or five six
- 12:54Speaker 1: years for a deer to get that big in most places,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and they've got to have they got to have a
- 13:00Speaker 1: safe spot. So that would probably be the key for
- 13:04Speaker 1: me to focus on, is you know, compared to trying
- 13:06Speaker 1: to have you know as much permission as I possibly could.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I really want, you know, the one key spot, and
- 13:15Speaker 1: that would be my first go to what's your what's
- 13:18Speaker 1: your angle or I don't know if angles the right word,
- 13:20Speaker 1: but like when you walk up to someone's door cold
- 13:24Speaker 1: and you knock on that door and they answer, and
- 13:26Speaker 1: they look at you, like, what are you doing here?
- 13:28Speaker 1: What do you say to these people? Like? How how
- 13:30Speaker 1: do you present yourself? How do you how do you
- 13:33Speaker 1: how do you have this conversation? Bo? If we all
- 13:39Speaker 1: had to answer to that one, it would be a
- 13:41Speaker 1: game changer. With the right way to do that. It's
- 13:46Speaker 1: not easy, you know, that's getting to be the hardest
- 13:49Speaker 1: part of the game anymore. And I've actually kind of
- 13:53Speaker 1: laid off of that whole going up and knocking on
- 13:56Speaker 1: the door thing. I mean, if I do, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 1: try to look look an act presentable, which for me
- 14:01Speaker 1: can be a challenged on any given day, but you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: not not look the part, you know, and I'm more
- 14:08Speaker 1: than happy to share you know that I'm you know,
- 14:12Speaker 1: actually filming, which over the years has helped me. But
- 14:15Speaker 1: I think people have kind of called onto that whole thing.
- 14:19Speaker 1: But to let people know that I'm just not out
- 14:22Speaker 1: there too, you know, kill something, I'm actually out there filming.
- 14:26Speaker 1: It has helped um. But like I said, I've kind
- 14:30Speaker 1: of gotten away from that whole thing with knocking on doors,
- 14:33Speaker 1: and I start off with a letter, you know, handwritten
- 14:36Speaker 1: letter to the land owner introducing myself and who I
- 14:40Speaker 1: am and where I'm from and what I'm doing, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: you know, try to find out if um, you know,
- 14:46Speaker 1: they would be interested in having a conversation about hunting.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And I've even gone as far as just to ask
- 14:53Speaker 1: for permission to photograph first, you know, to get to
- 14:57Speaker 1: meet the landowners so that it's it's tough for somebody,
- 15:01Speaker 1: you know, I'm a I'm a landowner myself now and
- 15:04Speaker 1: somebody comes to knocking on my door, you know, I'm
- 15:07Speaker 1: even though I am a hunter and I'm not gonna
- 15:08Speaker 1: let anybody hunt here. You just never know the person
- 15:11Speaker 1: to do the research. Yeah, and you just people. People
- 15:16Speaker 1: want to know who they're dealing with, and that's pretty
- 15:19Speaker 1: hard to do the first time, you know, they meet
- 15:22Speaker 1: you when you're knocking on their door in the evening
- 15:24Speaker 1: during the week as they're eating dinner. So I think
- 15:28Speaker 1: the biggest thing is to try to get to know
- 15:30Speaker 1: the landowners so they can get to know you a
- 15:32Speaker 1: little bit before you start asking for, you know, permission
- 15:35Speaker 1: to run all over their farm and shoot their deer. Yeah. Uh,
- 15:41Speaker 1: And have you found that that letter works betterly? Do
- 15:44Speaker 1: you have a better yes rate now that you're doing
- 15:46Speaker 1: the letter versus walk up to the door first thing? Yeah,
- 15:52Speaker 1: but it's probably because I'm a little more picky on
- 15:56Speaker 1: the spots that I'm trying to get permission then I
- 15:59Speaker 1: used to be, you know, So it has hope. So Adam,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you've been kind of you're you're pretty known for that
- 16:07Speaker 1: strategy of you know, spot a big one, research the
- 16:12Speaker 1: landowners and get in there and try to get permission.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And you've been doing that a long time. Like how
- 16:16Speaker 1: much harder is it now? Like what what's the ratio
- 16:19Speaker 1: of nose to yes is these days versus when you
- 16:22Speaker 1: started doing this, oh ten, the one. I mean, when
- 16:28Speaker 1: I got started, you could get permission anywhere. I mean,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it's just not the same game anymore. That's a it's
- 16:36Speaker 1: a lot harder now. That's probably conservative, is this could be?
- 16:48Speaker 1: Do you? Uh? I'm always curious when I hear I
- 16:52Speaker 1: hear somebody like you're talking about, you know, finding these
- 16:54Speaker 1: big bucks and seeing them, you know, taking a drive
- 16:57Speaker 1: in the evening in August or whenever you see them,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and how ever you see them. I mean, are there
- 17:02Speaker 1: are there any secrets left when you when you bump
- 17:05Speaker 1: into one of those bucks that you're like, I've got
- 17:07Speaker 1: to get after this, dear. I just always envisioned that
- 17:09Speaker 1: deer being known by so many people because there's so
- 17:12Speaker 1: many trail cameras and so much of this information is
- 17:14Speaker 1: out there. Do you ever find one that's just a secret?
- 17:19Speaker 1: Sure doesn't seem like it, you know, And you're right,
- 17:23Speaker 1: there's just so much pressure that probably has a lot
- 17:26Speaker 1: to do with, you know, the landowner stuff that we
- 17:28Speaker 1: were just talking about as well, because you know, twenty
- 17:33Speaker 1: years ago, you know, in Ohio it was you know,
- 17:36Speaker 1: it was nothing to drive around in the fields and
- 17:39Speaker 1: the evenings of being fields and seed deer out everywhere,
- 17:42Speaker 1: and you just can't do that anymore because there's so
- 17:44Speaker 1: many people doing it and the pressure is just it's
- 17:49Speaker 1: just tenfold what it used to be. So it makes things,
- 17:53Speaker 1: it makes things definitely tougher. But I think, and you know,
- 17:57Speaker 1: on the flip side of that, it's created a scenario
- 18:00Speaker 1: where I think we have a lot more mature, dear,
- 18:02Speaker 1: because everybody's doing the most with their property. They're you know,
- 18:06Speaker 1: they're letting younger deer grow and managing for trophy, dear.
- 18:11Speaker 1: So it's a two edged sword. Yeah, So let me
- 18:15Speaker 1: jump in like kind of payback off of that, and
- 18:18Speaker 1: let's play out this hypothetical scenario a little bit further
- 18:21Speaker 1: into the year than given this new challenge of increased
- 18:25Speaker 1: pressure at least increased number of people that are pretty
- 18:28Speaker 1: serious about this stuff. So let's say you you saw
- 18:31Speaker 1: this giant, you you sent some letters, you had a
- 18:35Speaker 1: farmer two where they gave you a yes. Let's say that.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Let's say one property give you a yes, and you're
- 18:41Speaker 1: excited about it, and you come back and you start
- 18:43Speaker 1: your process. And at least from past conversations we've had
- 18:47Speaker 1: and past things I've seen you do. A big part
- 18:51Speaker 1: of your process is observing these deer from afar, kind
- 18:55Speaker 1: of narrowing down what they do when they're gonna do it,
- 18:58Speaker 1: And then you wait. You wait for the right time,
- 19:00Speaker 1: tim the right moon, the right weather, the right day
- 19:02Speaker 1: of the month, and let's say late October arrives and
- 19:05Speaker 1: you get the red moon and you've watched this buck
- 19:08Speaker 1: coming and out of a bean field, then you move
- 19:10Speaker 1: in to kill him. Like if if we're gonna oversimplify
- 19:13Speaker 1: and say that that's your usual process, tell me what
- 19:16Speaker 1: you would do in the situation where you start doing that.
- 19:21Speaker 1: You start observing, You've got some cameras out, and he's there,
- 19:23Speaker 1: He's on the property you have permission on, and he's
- 19:27Speaker 1: pretty frequently he's in the area, and you're thinking, Okay,
- 19:30Speaker 1: he's killable. I just need to wait for the right moment.
- 19:32Speaker 1: But then just as you're realizing this, you get winto
- 19:36Speaker 1: the fact that there are two other guys who also
- 19:38Speaker 1: now have access to the property and they also know
- 19:41Speaker 1: about the same buck. How does your approach change with
- 19:46Speaker 1: that knowledge, now that there's two other guys going after
- 19:49Speaker 1: him in the same place, what do you do different?
- 19:55Speaker 1: You know, I think most of the deer, you know
- 19:57Speaker 1: that I've been hunting in the last ten year, as
- 20:00Speaker 1: I have that scenario pretty much. I don't know where
- 20:05Speaker 1: I've been where I was the only person hunting a
- 20:07Speaker 1: specific deer, you know, where there was no other pressure around.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty much a constant, especially here in Ohio.
- 20:16Speaker 1: So I've just kind of always been been that guy
- 20:22Speaker 1: that would allow other guys to pressure dear and to
- 20:27Speaker 1: push him into my area. But I guess if I'm
- 20:29Speaker 1: on the same farm with other guys, it really doesn't matter,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna let those guys um
- 20:37Speaker 1: make the mistakes and and push the deer, and I
- 20:41Speaker 1: want to, you know, stack the deck in my favor
- 20:44Speaker 1: as far as the best time to go in and
- 20:48Speaker 1: make a move on a deer, you know. You know,
- 20:51Speaker 1: if you know there's a big deer on a farm
- 20:54Speaker 1: and it's hunting season, I think most guys feel like
- 20:57Speaker 1: they have to be hunting. And I'm never gonna advocate
- 21:02Speaker 1: for somebody not to be hunting. But there's a difference
- 21:05Speaker 1: between hunting scouting observing. You know, if if I've done
- 21:12Speaker 1: my homework and I think I know where I need
- 21:14Speaker 1: to be to kill a deer. I've done my scouting,
- 21:18Speaker 1: maybe I've seen him make a mistake. Now I've I've
- 21:21Speaker 1: found that right tree where I need to be. I
- 21:24Speaker 1: want to stack the deck in my favor so that
- 21:27Speaker 1: the first time I go in. I think everybody would agree,
- 21:30Speaker 1: the first time you understand the best time you hunt it.
- 21:33Speaker 1: But I want to stack the deck in my favor
- 21:35Speaker 1: so that when I go in there, everything is in
- 21:37Speaker 1: my favor for that deer to be up and moving.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And I think the more times you go into a
- 21:42Speaker 1: farm and don't kill that deer, it gets tougher each time.
- 21:48Speaker 1: You know, whether we want to admit it or not,
- 21:50Speaker 1: that deer is probably either seeing us, smelling us, hearing us.
- 21:54Speaker 1: And each time we go in that deer, that deer
- 21:56Speaker 1: is getting smarter and smarter just like we think we are,
- 22:00Speaker 1: you know, trying to figure them out. So I want
- 22:02Speaker 1: to minimize that and maybe let other guys come in,
- 22:07Speaker 1: get their routine, let a big deer pattern them, and
- 22:11Speaker 1: stay out of my spot until I know everything's perfect,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know. And like I said, I'm gonna scout ten
- 22:17Speaker 1: times more than a hunt because I want to do
- 22:20Speaker 1: all the legwork to know exactly where I need to be.
- 22:24Speaker 1: You know, my scouting is going to tell me where
- 22:26Speaker 1: I need to be to kill a big deer. It's
- 22:28Speaker 1: the other factors that I pay attention to that let
- 22:31Speaker 1: me know when the prime time is to go in
- 22:33Speaker 1: and try to kill him. You know, maybe let the
- 22:35Speaker 1: other guys burn their spots out, push the deer out
- 22:39Speaker 1: of the spots that they're hunting, and hopefully push them in,
- 22:42Speaker 1: you know, to my farm. And that's something that happens
- 22:44Speaker 1: every year. You know, I'll stay out in my spots
- 22:46Speaker 1: until all my factors that I'm looking for a lineup,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and let other guys pressure and pushes deer into into
- 22:52Speaker 1: my spot, and then when everything's right, slide in and
- 22:56Speaker 1: try to kill him. And more times than not, if
- 22:59Speaker 1: you if you've got the patience and the persistence to
- 23:03Speaker 1: stay out of those spots until everything everything lines up.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Most of the time, um, at least for me, it's worked,
- 23:11Speaker 1: and I've been able to kill this big deer by
- 23:13Speaker 1: doing that. But I think we might have talked about
- 23:17Speaker 1: it before, but I think you know, the toughest part
- 23:19Speaker 1: of hunting big deer is actually not hunting them until
- 23:23Speaker 1: everything's lined up. And then going back to what I
- 23:26Speaker 1: said earlier, I'm not going to advocate somebody not hunt,
- 23:29Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean that you're not out there in
- 23:30Speaker 1: a tree stand observing. Maybe you're not in your kill spot.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Maybe you're not in the stand where you think you're
- 23:36Speaker 1: gonna kill him, but maybe you're in a tree stand
- 23:39Speaker 1: three or four hundred yards away with a spotting scipe
- 23:42Speaker 1: watching that area developer, trying to pick up on another
- 23:45Speaker 1: little piece of the puzzle. Or maybe you're, you know,
- 23:48Speaker 1: on a completely different farm, trying to pick up on
- 23:51Speaker 1: a deer or find you get a look at a
- 23:53Speaker 1: buck that's spanished. I mean, I'm I'm not gonna be
- 23:56Speaker 1: sitting at home on the couch because it's not a
- 23:59Speaker 1: good own day or because the weather is not right.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I'm always going to be out there at least scouting
- 24:05Speaker 1: and observing, but I'm not going to go in and
- 24:08Speaker 1: put all that effort into the finding those spots and
- 24:11Speaker 1: for're gonna pick buck out and I'm not gonna go
- 24:13Speaker 1: in there and try to kill them until everything's in
- 24:15Speaker 1: my favor. So I think that's the biggest difference between
- 24:19Speaker 1: me and other guys. Let the other guys burn up
- 24:21Speaker 1: their spots and push the deer out and let the deer,
- 24:24Speaker 1: you know, pick up on what they're doing and pattern
- 24:26Speaker 1: them and you know, also wide and when time is right,
- 24:29Speaker 1: in the right spot and kill them. Yeah. Now, in
- 24:32Speaker 1: our past conversations, we spend a lot of time talking
- 24:35Speaker 1: about like what you think those right conditions are that
- 24:37Speaker 1: you wait for. But for the sake of those people
- 24:40Speaker 1: that maybe didn't hear those, can you just give me
- 24:42Speaker 1: the really click quick, like one minute overview of the
- 24:46Speaker 1: key things that you're waiting for that they're going to
- 24:48Speaker 1: tell you, like, Okay, now is the time to leave
- 24:50Speaker 1: the long distance observation stand and going for the kill? Well, yeah,
- 24:57Speaker 1: I mean it's the battle is is trying to figure
- 25:00Speaker 1: out what a big deer is gonna do before he
- 25:03Speaker 1: does it. You know, there are scouting and stand placement
- 25:06Speaker 1: and all that. It's, you know, playing that chess match,
- 25:09Speaker 1: trying to figure out where you need to be the killing.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But before I go in, there's a few things that
- 25:15Speaker 1: that I want to have in my favor. And you know,
- 25:18Speaker 1: any of these factors can get a big deer up
- 25:21Speaker 1: and moving during daylight. You know, everybody, everybody think everybody
- 25:26Speaker 1: will agree you know, the weather is probably the most
- 25:28Speaker 1: important thing. You know, a great weather pattern, parametric pressure,
- 25:32Speaker 1: high pressure, cold front, it's probably you know, you know,
- 25:37Speaker 1: the key to everything. Um, a perfect wind direction for
- 25:42Speaker 1: the deer you're hunting. You know, that was one of
- 25:45Speaker 1: the big things for me to change my success drastically,
- 25:49Speaker 1: was when I quit hunting winds that were good for
- 25:51Speaker 1: me and I started hunting winds that were good for
- 25:53Speaker 1: the deer. I was after. You want to give a
- 25:56Speaker 1: mature deer the wind to his advantage so that he
- 25:59Speaker 1: feels offerable enough to get up and move before dark.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Because nine times out of ten, a big deer that's
- 26:05Speaker 1: been around five or six years, he ain't gonna move
- 26:08Speaker 1: before dark anyway most of the time. But on those
- 26:12Speaker 1: nights that he's gonna move a little bit early, it's
- 26:14Speaker 1: usually because a couple of these factors line up, and
- 26:17Speaker 1: one of them in particular, is going to be a
- 26:19Speaker 1: wind to his you know, to his advantage. So the wind,
- 26:24Speaker 1: the weather, and the moon. Um, I've just followed the
- 26:29Speaker 1: moon for way too long to disregard it. It's it's
- 26:35Speaker 1: a factor that affects the animals, and you know, everybody
- 26:38Speaker 1: knows fishermen serious fishermen have followed the moon forever. I've
- 26:43Speaker 1: done my own research for the last twenty years, you know,
- 26:46Speaker 1: paying attention to it and watching deer, and it affects
- 26:49Speaker 1: all dear, and it really affects mature dear because those
- 26:52Speaker 1: deer just an't look here in daylight that often. But
- 26:55Speaker 1: when I've seen the move, it's happened too many times.
- 26:59Speaker 1: They're there, are moving on this red moon. And like
- 27:02Speaker 1: I said, any of those three factors can trigger an
- 27:05Speaker 1: animal to move during daylight. What I'm looking for is
- 27:09Speaker 1: when you get those evenings where two or three of
- 27:11Speaker 1: those factors line up, that's when stuff starts getting bloody.
- 27:16Speaker 1: You know, when you line up multiple factors, you've got
- 27:19Speaker 1: a perfect wind for that deer to feel comfortable enough
- 27:22Speaker 1: to get up and move before dark. You throw a
- 27:25Speaker 1: great weather pattern on where you've got a cooler temperatures,
- 27:29Speaker 1: you've got high bear metric pressure, maybe you had a
- 27:32Speaker 1: storm comes through or just blow out. You know, some
- 27:36Speaker 1: weather pattern it's gonna increase activity. And then you combine
- 27:40Speaker 1: one or two of those on top of one of
- 27:41Speaker 1: the evenings where that red moon and the gravitational pool
- 27:44Speaker 1: is naturally pushing those deer to get up and feed
- 27:48Speaker 1: when they want to normally feed anyway. I mean, that's
- 27:52Speaker 1: that's what I'm looking for, and that's what I'm talking
- 27:55Speaker 1: about when I'm saying I'm trying to stack the deck
- 27:57Speaker 1: in my favor. I want everything, every natural factor to
- 28:04Speaker 1: influence that gear to get up a move just a
- 28:06Speaker 1: little bit early. Mm hmm. Yes, that kind of drones
- 28:10Speaker 1: strike approach. You you put all the pieces together, you
- 28:15Speaker 1: narrow down your field of view until you know the
- 28:17Speaker 1: best possible to place, and then you wait till the
- 28:19Speaker 1: targets right there or at least the absolute best chances
- 28:22Speaker 1: of it with all those conditions, and then you take
- 28:25Speaker 1: that one surgical strike. Um. I love it when those
- 28:29Speaker 1: things line up that way too. Now, Tony, what what
- 28:33Speaker 1: do you what do you think? And do you want
- 28:34Speaker 1: to press more on this or do you want to
- 28:36Speaker 1: pivot to another hypothetical on your end? Because I'm curious
- 28:39Speaker 1: what's going on in your head right now? I wanna
- 28:42Speaker 1: I want to revisit, go back to the wind direction
- 28:45Speaker 1: being right for them, because this is this is something
- 28:47Speaker 1: we get asked about a lot too. And I know
- 28:49Speaker 1: you know Adam mentioned that when you figured that out,
- 28:52Speaker 1: kind of changed his perspective on everything, and I can't.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I had a light bulb moment like that years ago
- 28:57Speaker 1: with Bucks on on a specific spot on a ridge
- 29:01Speaker 1: where the wind there there was one spot to set up,
- 29:04Speaker 1: but there's a little juke in the ridge with a
- 29:05Speaker 1: kind of a ravine wash out there that just had
- 29:08Speaker 1: to take them just outside of like the real comfort
- 29:11Speaker 1: zone for traveling with the wind. And that was like
- 29:13Speaker 1: the spot on the spot. And I realized when I
- 29:15Speaker 1: would see Big Bucks there, it was because the wind
- 29:19Speaker 1: was so good for them they were confident to move.
- 29:21Speaker 1: But I had one little spot that I could get
- 29:24Speaker 1: into a tree where it was also really good for
- 29:26Speaker 1: me blowing out over this valley. And I think this
- 29:29Speaker 1: is this is kind of a confusing topic for people
- 29:31Speaker 1: because if you say the winds perfect for the deer,
- 29:33Speaker 1: they think, well, I can't play it then, Like, obviously
- 29:36Speaker 1: the advantages there, but this is kind of like a
- 29:38Speaker 1: little current seam in a smalley river or something where
- 29:40Speaker 1: there might be one little spot somewhere where the wind
- 29:45Speaker 1: doesn't give them the advantage. And I kind of want
- 29:47Speaker 1: Adam to break that down a little bit more because
- 29:49Speaker 1: I think this is such an important thing for deer
- 29:52Speaker 1: hunters to really understand. Yeah, it is, and that that
- 29:57Speaker 1: that little spot you're talking about, as I call a
- 30:00Speaker 1: weak spot. You know, it's a spot where you can
- 30:04Speaker 1: actually get within bow range of a deer on his
- 30:07Speaker 1: normal travel pattern while he's using the wind to his advantage,
- 30:11Speaker 1: but he can't win jo. I mean, most of my spots,
- 30:15Speaker 1: you know, my kill spots, if you want to call
- 30:17Speaker 1: him Matt, are spots where you know you're virtually splitting
- 30:21Speaker 1: hairs with the wind. You know that that wind goes
- 30:25Speaker 1: off track, you know, ten or twenty yards one way
- 30:27Speaker 1: or the other could be game over. You know, I'm
- 30:30Speaker 1: constantly splitting hairs because it's not an easy thing to
- 30:35Speaker 1: do or to find where you can get, you know,
- 30:37Speaker 1: within bow range of Buckwick when he's actually using that wind.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I mean they're masters at that, and it's you know,
- 30:45Speaker 1: it really is splitting hairs. And you know, I was
- 30:49Speaker 1: Onyx has completely changed the game for me too, because
- 30:54Speaker 1: you know, when every time you're going out and looking
- 30:56Speaker 1: for those killer win scenarios where you know that Buck
- 31:00Speaker 1: is using the wind to his advantage and you know,
- 31:03Speaker 1: just ten yards one weather, he could pick you off.
- 31:06Speaker 1: You know, you gotta do everything you can do eliminate
- 31:09Speaker 1: your scent. And if God, I honestly believe that, if
- 31:14Speaker 1: guys aren't taking advantage of what's available out there, especially
- 31:17Speaker 1: with those onyx these days, you're missing the boat because
- 31:21Speaker 1: it's it was a game changer for me. I I
- 31:24Speaker 1: thought it was a gimmick at first. And I mean,
- 31:27Speaker 1: I'm carrying enough stuff into the woods between my hunting
- 31:30Speaker 1: gear and filming and cameras and camera arms because I
- 31:34Speaker 1: filmed myself most of the time, I'm not going to
- 31:36Speaker 1: carry something else into the woods. But I don't have to.
- 31:39Speaker 1: And if I don't believe that it works, you know,
- 31:42Speaker 1: I just don't need to carry something else out with me.
- 31:45Speaker 1: And you know, when you're constantly in those situations where
- 31:49Speaker 1: you're splitting here is on wind direction, you've gotta you've
- 31:53Speaker 1: got to use something like that because you might only
- 31:56Speaker 1: get one chance at it. And now throw throw into
- 32:00Speaker 1: the equation the other dear that you're going to see
- 32:03Speaker 1: before something like that happens. You know, the does and
- 32:06Speaker 1: the immature box and everything else, the other animals that
- 32:09Speaker 1: you've got to beat before that big one moves um
- 32:13Speaker 1: as well. I mean, you just gotta like it goes
- 32:16Speaker 1: back to the same thing. You gotta stack the deck
- 32:19Speaker 1: in your favor with every possible thing that you can,
- 32:23Speaker 1: and that's just another piece of the puzzle. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:26Speaker 1: you know you bring up one of my biggest challenges
- 32:28Speaker 1: on some of my local Michigan properties where there's a
- 32:32Speaker 1: very high deer density, is that I can find these
- 32:35Speaker 1: spots where I think the buckham after is going to
- 32:37Speaker 1: come through, and where I think I've got that weak
- 32:39Speaker 1: spot where the wind will be, you know, right enough
- 32:42Speaker 1: for both of us. But there's so many damn does
- 32:46Speaker 1: that are going every which way that there's there's almost
- 32:50Speaker 1: nowhere I can get to ever where there won't be
- 32:53Speaker 1: does going down wind of me. And so it's this,
- 32:56Speaker 1: it's it's constantly trying to find some way to avoid
- 32:59Speaker 1: that problem where you know, if you get one dough
- 33:02Speaker 1: to blow, that's set for the night usually or in
- 33:05Speaker 1: many cases, so how have you dealt with that? Meant
- 33:10Speaker 1: that makes finding those um those weak spots that much
- 33:15Speaker 1: more important, you know, like Coney was talking about, he's
- 33:18Speaker 1: found that one little spot where you know, it's it's
- 33:22Speaker 1: the winds good for the deer, but they can't win
- 33:24Speaker 1: him and you know, you find I find it in
- 33:29Speaker 1: some of the weirdest places. I'll never forget. I'd know
- 33:32Speaker 1: this older gentleman that's you know, been hunting longer than
- 33:36Speaker 1: I've been alive, and he told me one time, he said, Adam,
- 33:39Speaker 1: if you've gone more than a hundred yards from your truck,
- 33:41Speaker 1: you probably went too far. And that has proven right
- 33:47Speaker 1: every year. And you know, with with big deer, they
- 33:52Speaker 1: find these out of the way spots that you just
- 33:54Speaker 1: wouldn't think about. And sometimes it's you know, it's close
- 33:59Speaker 1: to buildings, are close to a road, or just just
- 34:02Speaker 1: different spots that most guys wouldn't pay attention to. But
- 34:07Speaker 1: it creates scenarios where you can use you know, I
- 34:11Speaker 1: can't tell you how many times I walked right down
- 34:13Speaker 1: the road and then just jumped right into a tree
- 34:17Speaker 1: right off the road. You know, you know, obviously paying
- 34:20Speaker 1: attention to how far you've got to be off the
- 34:22Speaker 1: road when you're hunting, but spots that you're able to
- 34:26Speaker 1: access without tipping off any any of the you know,
- 34:31Speaker 1: deer in the area, and then having the wind, your
- 34:35Speaker 1: wind blowing out into a spot that deer just can't
- 34:38Speaker 1: get down wind of you. I mean, you really sometimes
- 34:41Speaker 1: you really got to put some thought and effort into
- 34:43Speaker 1: finding those spots. But you gotta find those spots where
- 34:48Speaker 1: you know, they just they can't get your wind. They
- 34:51Speaker 1: just can't no matter what they do. And especially in
- 34:54Speaker 1: a high dear tonsit area like you're talking about, you know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: back yourself up to a cliff or a road or
- 35:01Speaker 1: freeway or housing development. I mean, I just got to
- 35:06Speaker 1: think outside the box. I'm kind of to find those spots,
- 35:08Speaker 1: but they're out there. They are not easy to find.
- 35:11Speaker 1: But you know, it happens a lot of times where
- 35:14Speaker 1: a deer has gotta make a turn in his travel
- 35:17Speaker 1: route or in an area that he's forced to go through.
- 35:21Speaker 1: You know, maybe it's some type of spot where there's
- 35:24Speaker 1: a you know, down fence or where a fence stops,
- 35:29Speaker 1: or you know deep ravines, um deep water. I mean,
- 35:34Speaker 1: just anything that's going to force a deer through an
- 35:37Speaker 1: area where he might have to drop his guard briefly,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know. And I've I've found those spots where you
- 35:44Speaker 1: you can't beat the spot and you can't beat the wind.
- 35:50Speaker 1: But by the time that buck is into my wind,
- 35:53Speaker 1: he should already have an are you know, he's blowing
- 35:56Speaker 1: directly at the spot where I know I need to
- 35:59Speaker 1: kill him. So you know, by the time he gets
- 36:03Speaker 1: my wind which directly down winded me, it should be
- 36:07Speaker 1: too late. I should already have a hero in him.
- 36:09Speaker 1: So it's I've taken it to that extreme before, just
- 36:13Speaker 1: because there was no other way around it. Yeah, and
- 36:16Speaker 1: then just hoping pray that it's not the two year
- 36:18Speaker 1: old buck that shows up and walks through their first
- 36:20Speaker 1: and blows everything up right. M hm, So so what
- 36:24Speaker 1: about this? Then let's let's take that and apply it
- 36:28Speaker 1: to a situation that Tony and I actually were looking
- 36:31Speaker 1: at and talking about this spring when we were out
- 36:33Speaker 1: doing some scouting in Iowa. And and let's say you
- 36:38Speaker 1: have got a buck you want to shoot, and we're
- 36:40Speaker 1: in I don't know, late October, and you have watched him,
- 36:45Speaker 1: You've caught sight of him a couple of times, finally
- 36:48Speaker 1: stepping out in the back corner of this field. It's October,
- 36:53Speaker 1: and then for whatever reason he couldn't hunt the next
- 36:56Speaker 1: day or watching it, he does it again. But as
- 36:59Speaker 1: you look at the a spot through your bindose, and
- 37:01Speaker 1: you've looked at the map, this back corner of the
- 37:04Speaker 1: field is basically like the inside corner of the beginning
- 37:09Speaker 1: of like a deep cut almost there's steep ridges that
- 37:12Speaker 1: blow up that come up on either side. So it's
- 37:14Speaker 1: basically at the bottom of a valley, and there's this
- 37:19Speaker 1: risk of swirling winds and and and everything that could
- 37:23Speaker 1: come with being at the bottom of a narrow ravine
- 37:26Speaker 1: of sorts. What do you do in that situation when
- 37:29Speaker 1: you go in there and you're facing what many people
- 37:33Speaker 1: would assume would be a dangerous wind situation. Do you say,
- 37:37Speaker 1: he was moving here two days in a row in daylight,
- 37:40Speaker 1: I gotta just take a swing for the fences and try.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Or do you go in there and you realize, like, Okay,
- 37:44Speaker 1: there's no way this will work with my wind. I'm
- 37:46Speaker 1: not gonna hunt it because it's not worth risking him
- 37:49Speaker 1: winding me. What do you do in that situation? Or
- 37:52Speaker 1: what are you thinking about? Is you try to find
- 37:53Speaker 1: a solution. I'll tell you what, man, things things change
- 38:01Speaker 1: so frequently during season that I think there's a point
- 38:05Speaker 1: in time where you just got to be aggressive, you know,
- 38:08Speaker 1: And I think I probably learned that from you know,
- 38:12Speaker 1: the most aggressive hunter I've ever met in my life,
- 38:15Speaker 1: Andre Dquisto, that the guy didn't have been a lone
- 38:19Speaker 1: wolf tree stands. He's the most aggressive hunting guy that
- 38:22Speaker 1: I've ever met. And now I learned a lot from
- 38:26Speaker 1: the time I spent with with him hunting and filming.
- 38:29Speaker 1: And you know, I don't consider myself to be an
- 38:32Speaker 1: aggressive hunter, but there's certain situations. You know, you see it.
- 38:36Speaker 1: They're making a mistake once, you know, shame on him.
- 38:39Speaker 1: You watch him do it twice, Shame on you. Now
- 38:42Speaker 1: you've got there's a point in time where you gotta
- 38:44Speaker 1: put a stand on your back and dive in and
- 38:47Speaker 1: try to get it done. And I've I killed one
- 38:50Speaker 1: of my biggest dear ever doing that exact same thing.
- 38:54Speaker 1: You know, that was a back corner of the field. Um,
- 38:59Speaker 1: I watched and come out. You know, the night before
- 39:02Speaker 1: I knew I had to be in there. I didn't
- 39:03Speaker 1: have the perfect wind direction. I actually had to walk
- 39:06Speaker 1: in there with the wind at my back, but my
- 39:08Speaker 1: wind was blowing straight down um the fence line that
- 39:12Speaker 1: he was gonna be crossing, instead of blowing back into
- 39:14Speaker 1: the back into the CRP. And you know, hung a
- 39:19Speaker 1: stand and watch that deer get up at right before dark,
- 39:23Speaker 1: at eighty yards away and you know, killed a two
- 39:25Speaker 1: hundred and eight engineer that night, and didn't really know
- 39:29Speaker 1: anything about the property other than the fact that that
- 39:32Speaker 1: buck came out of there the night before, and I
- 39:34Speaker 1: knew I had to be there the next night. But
- 39:36Speaker 1: that corn had just come down and he was pushing
- 39:39Speaker 1: a couple of goas around. I knew I had to
- 39:40Speaker 1: be in there. So, I mean, you're talking about a
- 39:43Speaker 1: situation was swirling winds. You know, I'm I'm gonna do
- 39:47Speaker 1: everything I can to be as sent free as possible.
- 39:52Speaker 1: You know, I think using the nose onics in that
- 39:55Speaker 1: situation is going to help tremendously. I had kind of
- 39:58Speaker 1: that same sence scenario I found myself in a couple
- 40:01Speaker 1: of years ago on an elk hunt. You know, we
- 40:04Speaker 1: were hearing this bull scream in the afternoon, and we
- 40:08Speaker 1: kept getting closer and closer and closer, and he was
- 40:10Speaker 1: up on this ridge and closer we got, we got
- 40:13Speaker 1: right to the edge of where you know, two hills
- 40:17Speaker 1: came down into this field and we were right up
- 40:20Speaker 1: against it, and I just felt like it was one
- 40:22Speaker 1: of those deals where my wind was swirling, and even
- 40:25Speaker 1: though I was where I thought I needed to be,
- 40:28Speaker 1: I knew if if that bull came down through there,
- 40:31Speaker 1: that chances are he is going to pick us off.
- 40:33Speaker 1: So we just backed up a hundred yards towards you know,
- 40:36Speaker 1: the wind wasn't swirling as much, and ended up shooting
- 40:39Speaker 1: that bull later that evening, you know, because he came
- 40:43Speaker 1: out into that pasture and started chasing cows around. And
- 40:48Speaker 1: if if if I would have stayed right there, it
- 40:50Speaker 1: was a wild because we right where we were standing,
- 40:53Speaker 1: right where all the cow showed up, and they milled
- 40:55Speaker 1: around those trees where we were at for half hour,
- 40:58Speaker 1: and there's no way that they would not have picked
- 41:02Speaker 1: us off right there if we just stayed right there.
- 41:04Speaker 1: But I just knew it was not I was not
- 41:07Speaker 1: in a good situation and backed up hunder yards and
- 41:10Speaker 1: ended up working out. Maybe that's the scenario, is you
- 41:14Speaker 1: know where he's coming out at. Do you know where
- 41:17Speaker 1: he's going? You know, is he's just gonna come out
- 41:20Speaker 1: in the middle of that field and feed. Is there
- 41:21Speaker 1: a water source he's heading to? Maybe backing up a
- 41:24Speaker 1: little bit to where you think that deer might be
- 41:27Speaker 1: going or what direction instead of being right on top
- 41:30Speaker 1: of him where you're sawing, Maybe you need to back
- 41:33Speaker 1: up a little bit and think in your head, where's
- 41:35Speaker 1: that deer gonna end up going? Or maybe you back
- 41:38Speaker 1: up a little bit and you stick a decoy out
- 41:40Speaker 1: to try to get him out of that corner where
- 41:43Speaker 1: the winds, you know, swirling and not in your in
- 41:46Speaker 1: your benefit. I mean, you know, sometimes you got do
- 41:51Speaker 1: stuff on the cuff, you know, and and and react
- 41:53Speaker 1: to a situation. And you know, it's great to be
- 41:56Speaker 1: mobile and have the opportunity to bounce around a little
- 42:02Speaker 1: bit ter go in and do a hanging hunt and
- 42:04Speaker 1: pick a tree. But just because you see a big
- 42:08Speaker 1: deer do something one specific area is I mean, you
- 42:10Speaker 1: have to be right in that spot to kill him.
- 42:12Speaker 1: And you know, if you've got a bad win situation,
- 42:15Speaker 1: there's only so many things you can do to control
- 42:18Speaker 1: your scent, and maybe you just need to think a
- 42:20Speaker 1: couple of steps beyond that. You know, like I said,
- 42:23Speaker 1: where that deer is gonna end up, where he's gonna go,
- 42:27Speaker 1: what you could do to pull him in a different direction. Yeah,
- 42:30Speaker 1: that's a great point. That's a really good point. Uh, Tony.
- 42:33Speaker 1: The next pitch is yours? Where do you want to
- 42:35Speaker 1: take it? Oh? Man, um, I have a hard time
- 42:40Speaker 1: moving on from some of this stuff. But if you
- 42:41Speaker 1: really want me to, I will if you want to.
- 42:43Speaker 1: If you want to, if you want to keep drilling
- 42:45Speaker 1: in on this scenario, you can. Um I want you
- 42:48Speaker 1: to take take us wherever your whims are pointing to me. Well,
- 42:52Speaker 1: so with with Adam, with what you just said there,
- 42:56Speaker 1: I kind of want to expand on that, because it's there.
- 42:59Speaker 1: There is all these different strategies, and you've talked about,
- 43:02Speaker 1: you know, being mobile, observing a ton, waiting for the
- 43:05Speaker 1: right conditions, and then also bringing up Andre and moving
- 43:08Speaker 1: in quick on him. But what you're what you're really
- 43:10Speaker 1: kind of saying, I think with a lot of this stuff,
- 43:13Speaker 1: is that scenario you just describe there. You know, you
- 43:15Speaker 1: see one night, you see the your target buck. He
- 43:18Speaker 1: gets up, he hops offense, he goes in the field here,
- 43:20Speaker 1: and you go tomorrow, I've got to be there. But
- 43:23Speaker 1: then you you qualify that by saying, well, but if
- 43:25Speaker 1: the wind is right and the conditions are right, and
- 43:28Speaker 1: you've got to think about what he's doing. And I
- 43:29Speaker 1: think I think that's where we we kind of lose
- 43:32Speaker 1: ourselves a lot of times as we get sort of
- 43:33Speaker 1: star struck we see this buck do something. We go
- 43:37Speaker 1: he walked right by that tree, I have to be there,
- 43:39Speaker 1: and we force it without thinking about where did he
- 43:42Speaker 1: come from, where's he going, and and trying to just
- 43:46Speaker 1: factor in as much of the data as we can
- 43:49Speaker 1: to make a decision and go, Okay, if I can't
- 43:51Speaker 1: be there, what's what's the next best scenario instead of
- 43:55Speaker 1: just kind of talking ourselves into hunting the wrong spot.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I mean, I think I hear from hunters who who
- 44:01Speaker 1: kind of fall for that a lot, and it's really
- 44:02Speaker 1: important to have that extra information. Anything you can get
- 44:06Speaker 1: to do that back up a hundred yards or move
- 44:08Speaker 1: down here, or get on that pond he's going to.
- 44:11Speaker 1: It's it's a it's a thin line between being aggressive
- 44:18Speaker 1: and you know, being smart and trying to you know,
- 44:25Speaker 1: sometimes you're just rolling the dice, you know, um And
- 44:30Speaker 1: one thing is for sure when it comes to hunting
- 44:32Speaker 1: big gear, nothing has ever you know, definite. I mean,
- 44:36Speaker 1: it's just things are just changing constantly and you've got
- 44:40Speaker 1: to be able to adapt to that situation and make
- 44:43Speaker 1: make your best call. So you know, if the winds bad,
- 44:47Speaker 1: do you do you roll the dice? Do you stay
- 44:51Speaker 1: out of the area, Maybe observe it and see what
- 44:53Speaker 1: he's doing. I mean, you know, it depends on what
- 44:57Speaker 1: the you know, what the situation is. Are you early
- 45:00Speaker 1: October where that deer is still going to be on
- 45:01Speaker 1: a strict feeding pattern for you know, two or three
- 45:04Speaker 1: more weeks or is it, you know, the first week
- 45:07Speaker 1: in November, and chances are you know, he's gonna be
- 45:10Speaker 1: on the dough in the next few days and you're
- 45:12Speaker 1: not gonna see him again. I mean, there's just so
- 45:14Speaker 1: many things you've got to take into consideration. And yeah,
- 45:18Speaker 1: I think that the one thing that a lot of
- 45:22Speaker 1: guys need to do more of in that situation is
- 45:26Speaker 1: really just step back and use your brain and think
- 45:29Speaker 1: about it. You know, think about all the factors, and
- 45:34Speaker 1: you know, at the end of the day, you got
- 45:35Speaker 1: to make a calculated guests on what you're gonna do.
- 45:38Speaker 1: So I mean, I don't think there's any right or
- 45:40Speaker 1: wrong answer, but I just like to try to gather
- 45:45Speaker 1: as much information because I can about it, try to
- 45:47Speaker 1: make an educated guests and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
- 45:51Speaker 1: But a lot of that, a lot of that comes
- 45:54Speaker 1: from you know, spending forty years Jason Dear. You know, yeah,
- 46:01Speaker 1: there's there's a big confidence factor there as far as
- 46:04Speaker 1: you know, trust in your gut on whether to move
- 46:05Speaker 1: in or stay out. What about this? What about a
- 46:22Speaker 1: situation We've talked a bunch of here about what happens
- 46:24Speaker 1: when you see a buck and you see him do something,
- 46:27Speaker 1: and then you're gonna make a play on him based
- 46:30Speaker 1: on what you saw. What about the situation where you
- 46:34Speaker 1: can't see him. So let's say you had a buck
- 46:38Speaker 1: that you know, identified on a property that you were
- 46:42Speaker 1: interested in targeting, and then he shows up a time
- 46:47Speaker 1: or two on trail camera. You know, in September, so
- 46:50Speaker 1: you know that he's still in the still alive, and
- 46:53Speaker 1: still somewhere in the general area. But now you know
- 46:58Speaker 1: it's it's early October. You still have a strong idea
- 47:01Speaker 1: of where he is or what he's doing. It's mid October.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I still don't know where he really is. It's not
- 47:05Speaker 1: obvious where his core areas. He just shows up every
- 47:08Speaker 1: once in a while, randomly on a camera here, a
- 47:11Speaker 1: camera there. Now it's late October, it's the last ten
- 47:14Speaker 1: days of October. It's your favorite time of year to
- 47:16Speaker 1: kill a specific buck, and this is the buck you want.
- 47:19Speaker 1: You still can't pin him down, and you've glassed from
- 47:21Speaker 1: the road, You've said observation stands, and it's just this
- 47:25Speaker 1: occasional random picture here, occasional random picture there. And now
- 47:30Speaker 1: it's almost the rut. And when the rut hits, of course,
- 47:33Speaker 1: the deck gets reshuffled again too. What do you do
- 47:37Speaker 1: now to try to zero in on this deer? It's
- 47:40Speaker 1: it's it's October and of October and it's about to
- 47:43Speaker 1: get crazy. What are you gonna do to try to
- 47:46Speaker 1: find this buck? Or or do you just say, hey,
- 47:49Speaker 1: this is a buck that's not living on me. I'm
- 47:51Speaker 1: going to move on to something else. I think the
- 47:57Speaker 1: worst thing you can do is spen too much time
- 48:02Speaker 1: in the wrong area. You know, if you know he's
- 48:06Speaker 1: if you know of a big deer and you can't
- 48:07Speaker 1: find him, you gotta find him, you know. That was
- 48:11Speaker 1: that That was another thing I learned, you know, spending
- 48:14Speaker 1: time with Andre is you've got to be on the
- 48:17Speaker 1: freshest sign and find those deer because if if you're
- 48:22Speaker 1: in the wrong spot, you're not doing yourself any favors.
- 48:26Speaker 1: And sometimes it's a matter of putting a stand on
- 48:29Speaker 1: and sticks on your back and burning a little shoe
- 48:33Speaker 1: leather and and go and find them. And you know,
- 48:37Speaker 1: Andre made a career out of doing that and and
- 48:40Speaker 1: bumping big deer out of their beds and killing them,
- 48:43Speaker 1: you know, the very next day, because you know he
- 48:46Speaker 1: would he would always have the wind in his face
- 48:48Speaker 1: so that a big deer, if he did bump a
- 48:50Speaker 1: big deer, it wouldn't smell him. He didn't necessarily care
- 48:55Speaker 1: for a big deer sawing, but he didn't want a
- 48:57Speaker 1: big deer smelling. And he'd bump a big gear out
- 49:00Speaker 1: of his bed, he'd have to stand on his back
- 49:04Speaker 1: and immediately hang that stand. Because his whole theory was
- 49:08Speaker 1: he would want to be there the very next time
- 49:11Speaker 1: that deer came back into his bed. Most guys jump
- 49:14Speaker 1: a big deer there, I'm gonna necessary cool off for
- 49:17Speaker 1: a few days, come back and hang a stand and
- 49:20Speaker 1: let it cool off for a few more days, and
- 49:22Speaker 1: they end up hunting a week or two later, and
- 49:24Speaker 1: by then that dear has come back smelled that you
- 49:27Speaker 1: were there, and chances are he's never going to be back.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Andre wanted to be there the very first time that
- 49:32Speaker 1: dere came back, whether it was the next day or
- 49:35Speaker 1: the second or third day, he'd sit there and wait
- 49:37Speaker 1: for the deer to come back and be there the
- 49:40Speaker 1: very first time that buck came back to bed in
- 49:42Speaker 1: that area and killed a lot of giant deer doing that.
- 49:45Speaker 1: And you know it, a big deer is leaving signed
- 49:50Speaker 1: behind at that time of the year, especially with scrapes
- 49:54Speaker 1: and giant rubs, And that's the first that's probably the
- 49:57Speaker 1: first thing that I'm going to look for. If I
- 50:00Speaker 1: can't find a deer on afters I'm gonna be looking
- 50:02Speaker 1: for those giant rubs because they're leaving signed behind somewhere.
- 50:08Speaker 1: You know, you might you might want to start on
- 50:10Speaker 1: the field edges. I mean, the betting areas is probably
- 50:15Speaker 1: gonna be the last place I'm gonna look. You know, look,
- 50:18Speaker 1: because I really don't want to bust a big deer
- 50:20Speaker 1: out of his bed. But you know what's the worst
- 50:23Speaker 1: thing that can happen. You find him and jump him
- 50:26Speaker 1: out of his bed. Well, you didn't know where it
- 50:27Speaker 1: was to begin with, you know, so the least you
- 50:30Speaker 1: know where he was and get an idea of what
- 50:33Speaker 1: he's doing. I mean, I just I'm not one of
- 50:36Speaker 1: those guys that's just gonna sit there and just wait
- 50:39Speaker 1: and hope that that big deer eventually shows up. You
- 50:41Speaker 1: gotta get out there and find it. Dear, I mean,
- 50:44Speaker 1: season only lasts for so long and wants the rut
- 50:47Speaker 1: rolls around. He never know what they're gonna be doing,
- 50:49Speaker 1: and you know who's hunting them, and if they're they
- 50:52Speaker 1: end up getting shot. I mean, you gotta you gotta
- 50:54Speaker 1: do everything you can to find those deer at that
- 50:56Speaker 1: time of the year. And if you don't know where
- 50:58Speaker 1: he's at, you better find him because body else is
- 51:00Speaker 1: probably going to. So when you're doing that specific thing
- 51:04Speaker 1: which you just described, which is you've got to stand
- 51:07Speaker 1: on your back and your burn boot leather until you
- 51:09Speaker 1: find something that tells you, oh yeah, this could be it.
- 51:12Speaker 1: You mentioned big rubs and scrapes. What's like the threshold
- 51:17Speaker 1: for you to say, oh yeah, this is it versus
- 51:19Speaker 1: oh yeah, this is a random big rub. You know,
- 51:22Speaker 1: if you you find that first big rub and scrape
- 51:24Speaker 1: and some good cover, do you say, Okay, that's enough
- 51:27Speaker 1: or do you need to see one, two, three, four,
- 51:30Speaker 1: five of these all tight together next to really great
- 51:33Speaker 1: cover and it's steaming and there's piss still in the scrape,
- 51:36Speaker 1: Like what level of hot big buck sign do you
- 51:39Speaker 1: need to see to tell yourself that this is this
- 51:42Speaker 1: is it, this is where he is. I'm looking for
- 51:47Speaker 1: multiple big rubs. I mean when you start walking trails
- 51:50Speaker 1: and field edges and you start finding rubs and scrapes,
- 51:54Speaker 1: and you're starting to find trees as big as your
- 51:57Speaker 1: leg that you know, every you know forward your fifty
- 52:00Speaker 1: yards that are rubbed, you know, and you know there's
- 52:04Speaker 1: a big one you know working, you know, working that trail.
- 52:07Speaker 1: I mean, that's really what I'm looking for. You know,
- 52:09Speaker 1: it's always great to find a big rub, but when
- 52:11Speaker 1: you're finding multiple rubs, or you get into a uh,
- 52:15Speaker 1: you know, a bedding area situation where there's a bunch
- 52:19Speaker 1: of big rubs and small rubs in an area that
- 52:22Speaker 1: looks like a big deer spending a bunch of time,
- 52:25Speaker 1: you know, you're probably pretty close to his core area,
- 52:29Speaker 1: you know, and you just start reading the sign. I mean,
- 52:31Speaker 1: you find a trail that's got giant rubs on it.
- 52:34Speaker 1: I mean, you can tell what direction that deer is
- 52:36Speaker 1: walking when he made those rubs, and if he's making
- 52:40Speaker 1: those rubs going back into his bedding area in the
- 52:42Speaker 1: morning or making him in the evenings, coming from his
- 52:44Speaker 1: bedding area. I mean, it's just really about reading that
- 52:48Speaker 1: sign and trying to figure out, you know, what he's doing.
- 52:51Speaker 1: But when I'm finding multiple, you know, big rubs in
- 52:55Speaker 1: a in an area like that, that's really what I'm
- 52:57Speaker 1: looking for. Okay, Now, how in this again, this scenario
- 53:02Speaker 1: of late October, your target bucks a ghost and very random,
- 53:07Speaker 1: and you're trying to tighten in on where he's at specifically,
- 53:11Speaker 1: how do trail cameras, if at all, play into this now?
- 53:14Speaker 1: I mean we've talked about observing and scouting on foot.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Are you doing anything unique with your cameras at this
- 53:19Speaker 1: point to try to pick him up? To I use
- 53:25Speaker 1: a lot of cellular cameras just so I'm not going
- 53:28Speaker 1: in and out of these spots to check them, especially
- 53:31Speaker 1: during season. I mean, the information you can get from
- 53:34Speaker 1: a cell camera during season is worth its weight in gold.
- 53:39Speaker 1: So I yeah, I actually run more cellular cameras during
- 53:44Speaker 1: season than I do regular cameras, just so that I
- 53:47Speaker 1: can get that real time information, you know. And if
- 53:51Speaker 1: if I find an area that I think a big
- 53:53Speaker 1: deer is using, I'm gonna have a cell camera on
- 53:58Speaker 1: that road line or scrape line to you know, to
- 54:01Speaker 1: get that information instantly instead of waiting a week and
- 54:04Speaker 1: going back and checking it. I want to know right now,
- 54:06Speaker 1: if that's where that deer is at, what kind of
- 54:11Speaker 1: places are you placing putting those cameras? Is this? Is
- 54:15Speaker 1: it random at first? And then you take one of
- 54:17Speaker 1: those he shows up once, and then do you grab
- 54:20Speaker 1: all of them and then zero them in on that
- 54:21Speaker 1: area or do you keep it widely dispersed. Your camera's
- 54:25Speaker 1: widely dispersed to observe like all the different places is going.
- 54:28Speaker 1: I'm just curious if you if you adjust and slowly
- 54:31Speaker 1: get tighter and tighter and tighter in him or or not.
- 54:36Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, man, I think these big deer
- 54:39Speaker 1: these days are picking up on these cameras and men,
- 54:41Speaker 1: it seems like every week I talked to somebody else
- 54:44Speaker 1: that's got a story about how they got to pick
- 54:46Speaker 1: one picture of a big deer and then they never
- 54:48Speaker 1: got it again. Or they've set up multiple cameras, you know,
- 54:54Speaker 1: a camera on another camera to see how the deer
- 54:57Speaker 1: are reacting to it and watching these big gears skirt
- 55:00Speaker 1: these cameras and walking around them, or get their picture
- 55:04Speaker 1: once and then then they never go by that camera again.
- 55:06Speaker 1: So it's one thing to set a camera up on
- 55:10Speaker 1: a scrape or a red line and you know something
- 55:14Speaker 1: that's gonna stop that deer in its tracks and get
- 55:16Speaker 1: a good picture of him. It's another thing to set
- 55:20Speaker 1: a camera up, you know, on video mode, to cover
- 55:25Speaker 1: a little bit of a wider area, maybe because you
- 55:27Speaker 1: don't know what's coming through there, exactly where is it
- 55:29Speaker 1: coming through, just to pick up on the action that
- 55:32Speaker 1: you know that um, you might not know exactly what
- 55:37Speaker 1: they're doing. So it just depends on the situation. But
- 55:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna usually put four or five cameras
- 55:43Speaker 1: in the spot if I think there's a big deer
- 55:46Speaker 1: moving through there and I'm trying to figure out what
- 55:48Speaker 1: try to figure out what he's doing. All very rarely
- 55:50Speaker 1: just having one camera for a specific deer. Okay, all right,
- 55:55Speaker 1: all right, Uh here's here's a strong pivot, hard pivot
- 56:00Speaker 1: from like picking the right location or locating a deer
- 56:03Speaker 1: to actually a scenario of what you would do in
- 56:06Speaker 1: a tree. So let's say we are now into November
- 56:12Speaker 1: and you've been trying to find this buck out but
- 56:16Speaker 1: I haven't killed him yet. You're up there you finally
- 56:19Speaker 1: see him. You're in this tree November one and you're hunting,
- 56:23Speaker 1: I don't know, back near a dough betting area and
- 56:26Speaker 1: this buck shows up. First time. You finally are in
- 56:29Speaker 1: a tree and you see this buck you've been trying
- 56:31Speaker 1: to kill all year long. But he is out of range.
- 56:36Speaker 1: He's cruising across at about sixty yards, and he's not
- 56:39Speaker 1: walking away from you. He's not walking towards you. He's
- 56:42Speaker 1: kind of walking parallel to you. And at the moment,
- 56:46Speaker 1: he's not down wind. But if he continues on his
- 56:49Speaker 1: current trajectory, and if he gets another hundred yards or so,
- 56:53Speaker 1: he will hit your wind. What do you do in
- 56:56Speaker 1: that situation? Do you call to a buck like that
- 56:59Speaker 1: and the situation? Do you do nothing and just waiting,
- 57:03Speaker 1: wait and see what's gonna happen. Hope becomes closer and
- 57:06Speaker 1: I won't kick your wind or would you say he's
- 57:09Speaker 1: heading in my wind. I don't want to grunt and
- 57:11Speaker 1: have him go closer to down wind. I need to
- 57:13Speaker 1: take the shot now at sixty What do you what
- 57:17Speaker 1: do you do then? M I killed him at sixty yards.
- 57:25Speaker 1: I practice, I practice, I practice out to seventy yards
- 57:30Speaker 1: all summer long, mainly for l cutting. But I've killed
- 57:35Speaker 1: two or three deer at sixty plus yards. And yeah,
- 57:40Speaker 1: with with the equipment and the technology available to hunters
- 57:45Speaker 1: these days, if you're not able to kill a deer
- 57:50Speaker 1: sixty yards, that you've got nobody to blame but yourself. Honestly,
- 57:55Speaker 1: I mean, I'm probably the worst shot of anybody that
- 57:58Speaker 1: I know. I got the akiest hands in the world.
- 58:01Speaker 1: If I can kill a six deer or sixty yards anybody,
- 58:08Speaker 1: it's just a matter of practice and knowing your equipment
- 58:11Speaker 1: and you know, getting dialed in and and you know, practice, practice, practice.
- 58:17Speaker 1: But the thing about it, think about shooting distances. It's
- 58:23Speaker 1: great to be able to shoot something at sixty or
- 58:25Speaker 1: seventy yards, and you know, I'm sure one of these
- 58:28Speaker 1: days I won't be able to do it anymore. But
- 58:30Speaker 1: as long as I can do it accurately, I'm gonna
- 58:33Speaker 1: keep doing it. But practice in at sixty and seventy
- 58:36Speaker 1: yards every night makes your close shots a no brainer.
- 58:40Speaker 1: I mean, I don't even think twice about my twenty
- 58:44Speaker 1: thirty forty yards shots anymore. I mean, it's it's I
- 58:47Speaker 1: hate to say chip shot and knock on wood right now.
- 58:50Speaker 1: But it really makes your closer shots just second nature.
- 58:57Speaker 1: You know, when you practice at those distances, it just
- 59:00Speaker 1: changes the game for you with with your closer shots.
- 59:05Speaker 1: I really believe that it's that's what it's done it from.
- 59:08Speaker 1: Are there any situations in which you wouldn't take the
- 59:12Speaker 1: sixty yard shot? Like, if it it was raining, would
- 59:14Speaker 1: you take the sixty yard shot? If it was wind
- 59:17Speaker 1: would you take the sixty If that buck was on
- 59:20Speaker 1: edge because he kind of knew something was going on,
- 59:24Speaker 1: would you still take that shot? What about those edge
- 59:27Speaker 1: situations and the winds probably the big one. I mean,
- 59:31Speaker 1: least they want to do is make a bad shot
- 59:34Speaker 1: and a big animal. So normally when it's it's that, Wendy,
- 59:38Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be taking any any long distance shots.
- 59:42Speaker 1: But a couple of the deer that I've shot at
- 59:45Speaker 1: that distance, you know, I've had to grunt to stop
- 59:50Speaker 1: those animals because you definitely don't want to shoot a
- 59:52Speaker 1: moving target at that distance. So those animals have been
- 59:55Speaker 1: on alert because they heard something because I stopped them.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: And I think when you're a little further away like that,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: m h, I think maybe the reaction might be a
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: little bit slower than if you're right on top of them.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: So I just haven't seen deer react to my bow
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: at that distance like I have, you know, being closer
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: to him. Does that make sense? Yeah, I think so,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: just because there the sound isn't reaching in the same
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: so quickly. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it might be a little
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: less apt to you know, immediately jump the string because
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: you're a little further than that the sound. You know,
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: the sound isn't right on top of him. So usually
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: aim just a little bit lower on a far shot
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: like that anyway, to allow for a little bit of
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: a reaction from a deer. But yeah, I want to
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: be prepared to take a six year, seventy year a
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: shot at a deer if the situation presents itself. I
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: wanna I'm gonna play this scenario out in a worst
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: case way, which I know you're gonna practice and you're
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: gonna do everything you possibly can so that the worst
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: case scenario doesn't happen. But as at least as my
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: history is indicated, and I think most ever, once in
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a while, worst case scenarios do pop up, and I'm
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: curious to hear how you handle that kind of situation.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: And I I know you've been in this situation. I
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: know you had this exact same thing happened, So I'd
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: love to understand how you would handle it today. And
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: this situation is this. Let's say you have that buck
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: at sixty yards. It seems perfect, it seems ideal. You
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: take the shot, but that buck moves or something happens
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: and you hit him and you never find him. What
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: do you do? Well? How do you handle that mentally?
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: How do you handle it practically? Like do you do
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: you need to take a couple of days off and
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: get your head right or do you go back out
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: the very next morning hunting again? Uh? What goes through
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: your mind and your heart and your soul and your
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: process to recover from that situation? Who? Man, failure is
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: part of bow hunting. I mean, you bow hunt long enough,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: It's going to happen sooner or later. It's just part
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: of the game. And I'm I believe a hundred percent
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: that you know, in life it is ten percent stuff
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: that happens to you and how you deal with it.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: And that that might be my age talking, you know,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: but I think I've I've learned anything. You know, just
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: about everything in life is a mental game, you know,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: and it's how you deal with it. And you know,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: I watched a good friend of mine two seasons ago
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: in Kansas said to the world class dear he was hunting,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: you know, hundred deer, and within a matter of two weeks,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: both of those deer lost half the racks. How many
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: guys is that can happen to two world class animals?
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: You lose them both in two weeks and in October,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: most guys are just gonna be in the corner in
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: the fetal position, crying about it. But I mean, you know,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: he kept running his cameras and kept playing the game,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: and you know, in less than two weeks, the biggest
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: deer of his life that he'd never seen before shows
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: up on camera and he ended up killing that deer.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Um end of the season and his best season ever.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: You know, the dealing with the highs and lows of
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: bohneam and you go from one extreme to the next
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: in a matter of hours or days. But one thing
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: is for sure. You know, if you experience a little failure,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: you you hit a buck and lose them, or the
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: deer you've been watching for five years it gets killed
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: by the neighbor. You know, it doesn't matter what the
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: scenario is, but one thing is for sure. If you
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: quit and give up, nothing positive is going to happen
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: from it. You know, if you don't go hunt and
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: nothing positive is gonna happen, happened, You've got you just
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: got to realize that it's part of the game. You
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: gotta roll with the punches and and know that you know,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: things could change in a matter of hours. So I mean,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: you just it's just all about being positive and just knowing.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: You know from the get gode that you know, if
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: you both want long enough, it's gonna happen. And there's
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: there's a lot of people that talk about success being
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: built on failure, and you know, the more more you
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: try something and the more you fail out fail at it,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: it's just you're that much closer to achieving your goaling
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: being successful. So yeah, I guess you gotta put it
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: in a perspective and just realize that, you know, at
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: the end of the day, just about any type of
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: success you're gonna have, is it going to be built
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: on multiple failures. So yeah, you basically got three options.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: You know, you can you can quit if you fail,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: you can keep going and keep doing the same things
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: and not learn from the experience and probably keep getting
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: the same results. Or you can you know, think about
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: what happened, adapt to it, change it and try it in. Yeah,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: it's truly, that's simple. Yeah, that's simple. And and that
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: hard though too, right. It's it's one of those things
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: that is easy to say, yeah, yeah, oh, and it's
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: that's tough when you Yeah, we all put so much
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: effort into hunting and you know, chasing these deer and
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: scouting and practice. So I means for most guys it's
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: you know, year round three and m sixty five days,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: and then you add the emotion into it and how
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: tore up we all get about it. And then you know,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: to have the rug pulled out from underneath you and
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: lose a dear, you know, the e h D or
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: another hunter. Just it can take the wind out of
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: your sales, that's for sure. But he said, man, it's
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: it's the highs and lows of bow hunting. I think
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: that's why we all love it so much, you know,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: because you just never know what's going to happen, and
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: you know, any amount of failures it just makes that
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: those successes that much sweeter. There's just nothing else like it.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, stick with it, man, just gotta stick
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: with it. Yes, that's uh, that's the name of the game.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: That's that's for certain. So it's Tony. I want you
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: to take take the wheel here. Paint a doozy of
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: a scenario for Adam. Take us, Take us somewhere else,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: because I don't want to linger on the real downer
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: of deer hunting right now. Take us somewhere better. I've
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: I've got a good one for this. I think you
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: know so. Way earlier in the conversation, Adam, you mentioned using,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: you know, maybe hunters on the neighboring farm or the
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: neighboring properties to your advantage and waiting for those folks
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: to put some pressure on the deer and position them
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: for you. But let's say just let's let's say it's
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: October tenth, October twelve, something like that. You've you've had
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: this buck scouted out. You know, he lives in a
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: certain property, and everything lines up, the moon lines up,
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: the wind lines up. You're like, I'm going in there,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: this is the night I kill him. As you're walking in,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: you see a trail camera that's not yours. You get
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: a little farther down the fence line, you look and
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: there's a there's a brand new ladder stand there. And
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: so you text the landowner and he says, oh, yeah,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: by the way, I let my nephew hunting there. He
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: likes to bow hunt a little bit. How does that
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: change your plans? What? What's your next steps there? You
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: guys aren't gonna give me any softball here area, Nope.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: So I got a new hunter to deal with all
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: my property. That's a that's a tough one, tough one
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: because you never know what's what another guy is thinking.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I mean, and I've had that exact same thing happened
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: to me, you know, sitting in a tree stand and
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: here comes, here comes three hunters across the farm that
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I've had permission by myself for the last, you know,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: so many years to hunt, and landowner decided to give
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: his buddies at church and their grandson permission to hunt.
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: And all of a sudden, I've gone to having a
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: you know, three acre farm AULTI myself too. Now there's
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: four of us, you know, and they're walking in put
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: the wind at their back, and you know, brand new
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: ladder stand hanging fifty yards from my hang on. And
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: I mean, you talk about a hunter's worst nightmare, especially
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: when you're on a big deer and you've been scouting
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: all year long, and that's enough to ruin your day.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: M hmm. But I think it kind of goes back
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: to what we talked about earlier, you know, letting, letting
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: other guys make the mistakes and pressure the deer and
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: focusing on, you know, the few factors that are really
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: going to get deer up and moving. I mean, there's
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: only so much you know, we can do as hunters,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: you know, specially in a situation like that. I mean, what,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: you know, what really can you do other than to
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: just keep hunting smart and hard. And you know, if
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: I've learned anything over the years, you never want to
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: put all your eggs in one basket because you know
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: you can have that situation happen where you could you know,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: that deer that you're chasing gets whacked by a car,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: you know, and he's laying out on the road when
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: you pull up to the farm. I mean, so many
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: different things that can happen. You put all your eggs
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: in one basket. You've got to have them. You know,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: a plan being a plan. See, I like to have
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: at least two or three different deer every season that
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I'm focusing on and you know, I want a hunt.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: It's not always the case, but um, you know, from
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: year to year hunting specific deer. You know, out of
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: the ten things that could happen, nine of them are bad,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: and you have to plan for that. Just like anything else,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: you gotta you gotta plan for the good and and
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: for the bad. So it always helps to have a
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: backup plan and back up farms and back up dear
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: And yeah, like I said, there's only there's only so
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: many things that we can do, so you know, try
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: to focus on focus on what you know. And you know,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: if you've got other guys hunting your farm, when aren't
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: they hunting? You know, are these guys that are only
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: hunting on the weekends. Are the guys that are only
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: hunting in the evenings. You know, a lot of guys
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: don't have the ability that I have, you know, to
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: hunt pretty much every day of the week. So maybe
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you got to focus on your morning hunts because they're
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: not pressuring the deer of the mornings. You know, if
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: you've got a guy you know, it's only hunting on
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: the weekends or the evenings. You gotta hunt when he's
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: not there, YEA, figure out what he's doing. And because
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: I guarantee if there's a mature deer, he's probably mature
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: deer on the farm. And the guy's not hunting smart
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: the buck they're after, he's probably figuring out what this
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: guy is doing and patterning him. So you gotta take
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: all that into consideration and adjust accordingly. So so in
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: that situation, do you try to get to know as
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: much about those other hunters as you can so you
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: can use that to your advantage. Oh yeah, yeah, you know,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: you got to get to know them, just like the
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: deer that you're hunting, because chances are when I'm hunting
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: a farm and somebody else moves in, they don't know
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: what I know. They're not doing what I'm doing. They
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: haven't spent the time scouting that I have. You know,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: I got a really good idea of what the deer
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: is doing and where I need to be. And yeah,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: it's more intel that you can get from, you know,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: the the guy that's hunting the farm now and what
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: he's doing and how that's gonna affect the deer that
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: you're after. I think a lot of guys think, you know,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: spook a deer, That deer is gonna leave the county,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: you know, go completely nocturnal, never see him again nine
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: times out of end. That's just not the case. A
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: deer is just gonna just his behavior accordingly, and you
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: have to do the same. What about during the rut?
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: We talked a lot of here in October, We've talked
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: about like late October, we've talked about these different ways
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: that you're trans zero in on a deer and adjust
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: to other hunters pressure and figure out how these deer
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: reacting to that and what they're doing. But when you
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: throw in the variable of of hot does it kind
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: of reshuffles everything? And with you being someone who's typically
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: focused on on a buck or two bucks or whatever. Uh,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I gotta believe that the rut can be maybe frustrating
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: at least in certain ways because they become slightly less predictable.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: Um So, so let's drill down one more time on
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: how you would adjust to that variable with one target
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: buck here after and we've had all these things happen,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: Let's let's add all of these things up. Let's say
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: you you you had this situation where you spotted him,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you try to kill him in late October. There was
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: other hunters in there with their tree stands. You try
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: to go in, and there was this tough wind situation
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: on another night when you saw him and you couldn't
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: kill him there, and you you set up down when
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the ways of the decoy and try to get him
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: come your way. That didn't happen. All this stuff hasn't
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: worked out. Now it's November. You are out there and
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: there are hot doors and there are bucks chasing, and
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: you're thinking yourself, what am I going to do to
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: zero in this book now? Because he's not doing anything
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: at all like what he was doing previously. Do you
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: have any ways that you try to zero in on
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: them other than just seeing or getting pictures of them?
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: Or at this point do you say, Okay, I'm not
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: going to obsess over his pattern because he didn't have one.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I'm instead just gonna hunt the does like any other
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: rut hunt, and just wait until the one buck I
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: like comes through and does the thing? What what? Then?
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: You know I kind of changed my approach to the
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: rut probably ten fifteen years ago, you know, obviously, I'm
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: trying to focus on specific dear you know, every year,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: and I've been doing that for decades, and you know,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: November is the worst time of the year to do
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: that because they're the least predictable. They're not on any
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: kind of pattern in November. You never know where they are,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: what they're gonna be doing, and how in the world
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: do you know, you know, unless you're out there every day,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: you know what what the phase of the rud is.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: You know, are they chasing, they seeking? They locked down
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: the pre rut post rut. I mean, when I just
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: throw all that stuff out the window, it quit trying
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: to figure all that stuff out and just focused on
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: daylight activity, you know, because at the end of the day,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: you're not going to kill a big deer unless he's
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: up moving during daylight. And I'm a firm believer that
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: there are certain times every day when deer are going
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: to be more active, and that doesn't matter if it's
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: October or November. But I will pay more attention to
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: those activity times in November during the day. You know. Obviously,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: if I'm hunting earlier late season, when dear on a
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: street feeding pattern, I'm going to focus on you know,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: there's mornings and evenings when that uh pull of the
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: moon on top of the weather and wind is affecting
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: animals to move a little bit earlier, a little bit later.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: Been in November, there are certain days where you've got
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: your peak activity times are going to be hitting during
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: the middle of the day. And whenever that peak activity
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: time hits during the day, that's when I want to
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: be in the woods. There's there's days in November that
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: all completely abandoned my typical morning and evening sets and
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: just hunt from ten to two, or maybe sit all day,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: or go in in the morning and hunt until two
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: or three in the afternoon, and then maybe get out
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: and and change my location. But just really focusing on
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: daylight activity and when I think this deer are going
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: to be up and moving during day, the daylight and
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: the just where I'm hunting accordingly. I mean, if you're
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: hunting mid day in November, you don't necessarily want to
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: be out on the edge of a food source. You know,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: you want to be back in the timber, you know,
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: down window the betting areas, or in a funnel or
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: corridor in between betting areas catching bucks. Traveling, but really
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: just completely threw everything out the window that I'd ever
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: learned or read about the rut and just strictly focusing
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: on daylight activity because if the doose are up moving,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: the bucks are going to be up moving, and you know,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: dear have got to be up moving in order for
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: you for you to kill him. So what what that's
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: my approach? What situation would you prefer? Would you prefer?
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: If you had to pick, I'm gonna give you two options,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: and you're only allowed to pick one of these days
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: in the rut. One is November one, November six on
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: November and this isn't gonna be quite right because of
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: how the moon works, but just humor me where I'm staying.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: One of these days, you're gonna get a cold front.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: It's nice and cold, it's November, and you've got that
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: like twenty degree crisp morning. You can hunt that day.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: But the moon is not right at all. It's not
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: a red moon. It's it's whatever the opposite of the
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: red moon is, whatever you wanna call that. It's it's
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: the worst moon position for daylight buck activity. That's option A.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Option B is there's another day in November. You can hunt,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: and you're gonna have a red moon. You're gonna have
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: that over overhead moon in the day, in the daylight
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: towards the edge, and it should be dynamite from that perspective.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: It's November, but we're in the middle of a warm
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: front and there's like sixty degrees seventy degrees on that
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: day where you have the good moon. Would you rather
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: take the hot day with a good moon or the
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: bad moon with the nice cold temperatures? Which dare you
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: can hunt? It's a good question. I'll give you another scenario.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: So I'm in Kansas. I'm hunting at two plus inch deer.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: I scheduled my trip to coincide with the red Moon.
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I know that the red moon is gonna hit towards
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: the end of the week, so it's gonna get better
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: and better and better each day of the week. But
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: when I get there, it's even hotter than predicted. You know,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: it's degrees all week, first week in November. Not good
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: conditions for dear to be moving during daylight. Dear aren't
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: moving during daylight pretty much. I killed the biggest deer
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: of my life on the red moon in the evening
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: when it was eighty degrees that day, and I knew
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: that if I was gonna get a chance to kill
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: that dear, it was gonna be towards the end of
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: the week. So I focused, just focused, mainly on the
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: evenings around the water sources, and she ended up shooting
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: that dear hour and a half before dark, when it's
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: eighty degrees out. No no rhyme or reason to why
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: that big, mature dear should be up moving in that heat.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: I don't know how else to explain it other than
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: the fact that you know, the red moon hit, you know,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: at the end of the week, sat there for eight
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: or nine days and hard to sell anything moving at all,
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: And that deer got up almost two hours before dark.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: It was up moving, trolling for does and that heat
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: and just no other explanation for it. So I'm not
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: I'm not a I'm not gonna sit here and say
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: that you should be hunting warmer weather, But I mean
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: when you've got good conditions. Because additions that I'm looking
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: for a perfect wind, perfect moon, and maybe you know
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: the weather is not optimal. But I've got two of
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: the three factors that I'm looking for. I'm going to
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: be there regardless if it's seventy or eighty five degrees,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: And like I said, he killed the biggest deer of
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: my life. But if you want to know what what
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: conditions I think are perfect and that I've had my
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: best luck in November, if I wanted to create the
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: best scenario as far as all that stuff goes, when
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: you have a overhead or underfoot moon peeking after daylight
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: in the morning, say it's getting daylight at seven o'clock
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: in the morning and that moon is peaking at eight
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: nine ten o'clock, I've seen more big deer movement and
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: killed more big deer in November on those late morning hunts,
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: because when that moon peaks after daylight, those deer are
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: going to be moving a little bit later in the morning,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: you know, in the rut if they're with the dough,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: following those dose back into the bedding areas or searching
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: for that next dough coming into heat. It seems like
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: those cooler mornings, when you've got a moon peeking after daylight,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: you've got better activity the lasting later in the morning
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: just hands down. If I was going to pick a
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: time I would want, that's what I would be looking
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: for as a as a moon that peaks late morning,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: it seems like the activity lasts longer in the morning,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: seems to you know, be prolonged out through midday. Two.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: You need to get into your stand before daylight and
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: just plan on sitting, you know, till two or three
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: in the afternoon. But that's when I've seen the most
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: big buck activity in November. You know, it's not your
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: typical red moon evening edge of the food sources. Those
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: mornings when the moon's peaking late, hands down been my
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: best best days in November. You know, it sounds like
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: a good time to being the tree. It's got me November. Uh, Tony,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: do you have any final scenario you want to play
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: out here because you've got your last last question here
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: and then I want to move to the rapid fire
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: round of this situation. Yeah, I just I have just
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: one thing I'm curious about. So Adam, everything that you've
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: you've kind of said in this so far, and everything
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: you're you're known for, is you know, finding a target buck,
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: locking onto that sucker and just seeing what you can do,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: and even more like finding three of them so you
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: have those backup dear, Is there ever a scenario in
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: any given fall where you just go into the woods
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: somewhere and you hunt, not knowing what's in there, and
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: just decided to sit in a tree and a spot
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: you think is good, hope something comes by, or is
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: that never happened for you? You know, it's for me,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: the whole thing in the fall is hunting a specific
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: animal and playing the game with that deer and trying
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: to figure him out. I mean, if somebody said, you know,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: you go climbing this tree and at eight o'clock, you
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: know this giant deer is going to come from this direction,
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: you have a thirty yard shot, and just put me
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: on the deer. I mean, that just doesn't do anything
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: for me, And it doesn't do anything for me personally
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: to just go and sit in the woods and just
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: hope something strolls by. I mean, I just I guess
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: it probably comes from you know, chasing specific gear for
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: over thirty years. That that's really what it's all about
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: for me, And that's what I get the most enjoyment
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: of it, from his trying to figure out a big
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: deer and what he's doing and that cat and mouse game.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, there's occasion where I'll go and climbing
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: a tree stand out behind my house and just enjoy it.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: But it's just not the same for me if I'm
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: not after a specific animal. So yeah, I enjoy the
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: woods as much as the next guy. But if I'm
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: not after a specific buck and trying to figure them out,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: just that's not what it's about for me anymore. So
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I just don't enjoy that just going out and sitting
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: and hoping a big deer comes by. It just seems
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: like a waste of time for me. You know, seasons
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: so short and to come and go and get your
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: really get to appreciate, you know, the opportunity more and
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: more the older I get, and I want to I
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: want to be um, you know, I want to be
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: in the game with a big deer and really the
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: whole one on one. So it's not saying that's for
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: everybody and not saying, you know, guys that aren't into that,
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: it's wrong, and I'm right, it's just that's that's what
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: it's all about me. So all right, I can't I
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: can't not get in it. Yeah, yeah, I'm just curious.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: There's something about that one on one thing I can
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: certainly relate to that no doubt about that. So nothing
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: like figuring out a big deer, and it just really
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: isn't there. Just you're really an amazing animal. And when
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: you can beat an animal like that at his game
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: on his turf, I mean, they're just so rewarding to
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: do that, and you know, trying to figure out what
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: they're gonna do before they ever do it. That's just
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: what it's all about. It's pretty cool thing. So the
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: next phase here, Adam, the final wrap up here is
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: we're gonna have a series of kind of rapid fire
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: questions that I'm gonna give them to you fast, and
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: you've just got one word answer. You just you can't
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: explain it. You just have to give me the one
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: one option yes or no or this or that. We
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: basically asked the same questions to everyone, so I kind
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: of already know you're answered a few of these, but
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: we're still going to run you through it. Anyways. We'll
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: get through this real quick and then we'll wrap things up,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: all right. Mhm. All right, and Tony, I'm I'm just
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: gonna steal a couple of your questions you added to
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: my list too, all right, all right, So Adam, here
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: we go with the rapid fire and this first one, man,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: you better get this one right. Does the moon matter
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: to dear movement? Yes? Or no? Yes? Would you take
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: a fifty yard shot at a white tail with your bow? Yes?
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: If you could only have one of these tools for
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: the rest of your hunts, would you choose a set
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: of rattling anislers or grunt tube as expandable or fixed
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: blade broadheads. Let's explade. Should you stop a buck with
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: a sound before shooting? Yes or no? Yes? If you
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: could only pick one season to scout one of these
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: three seasons, which would you pick? Winter, summer or in
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: season winter? Which state has the better hunters Michigan, Ohio
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: or Minnesota? Of course? Uh in in Michigan, we don't
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: say Io. After that we say two different letters, but
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: uh uh So, okay, you passed the rapid fire. Got
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: one final doozy for you. And here's the situation, Adam.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: Let's say that I am the all powerful ruler of
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: the world, and I have control over your right to hunt.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: And I'm gonna tell you, Adam, that you cannot hunt
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: at all for the next ten years. You're done, no
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: hunting license, no ability to hunt for ten years unless
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: unless you kill a six year old buck this year.
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: You have to kill a six year old just mega
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: giant buck this year, and you only have one day
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: to do it. You get to pick one day, and
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: you only get to hunt one location. So what I
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: want to know is, with this very high stakes on
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: this hunt, what's the one date of the year you're
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: gonna pick. Tell me the date you're gonna pick, and
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: then describe to me in as much detail as you
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: possibly can, this one best possible location you can think
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: of to kill a six year old mega giant that
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: your next ten years depends on. How do you guys
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: come up with the stuff? Just too much time on
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: my hands at him? Uh huh. You guys had a
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: little meeting last night on how to stump out that's
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: all I've been doing for weeks. Yeah, so I need
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: to pick one day and you said I need to
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: pick a location or yeah, yeah, Like you like to
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: tell me the tree, like describe your hypothetical tree, like
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: it could be actually literally a tree you know of
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: in a spot you know of, or you could paint
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: the picture of the perfect hypothetical scenario that in a
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: perfect world you could find. Um, so give me the
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: date and describe the place you would sit and hunt
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: to kill this kind of buck that would give you
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: the absolute best chance. All right, well, I'm gonna have
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: to pick um a day last week of October, so
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: I have to pick one of those. I'd say, haween.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: I killed most of my biggest deer last ten days
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: of October. I think that's probably the best week of
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: the year. And against If you're going to pick a
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: day that last week, why not go with thought with
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: the Halloween, so that would be my day. The perfect
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: scenario would be on a big rub line, you know,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: right on the edge of a food source like a
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: red noon and being within earshot of his betting area,
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: you know, a couple hundred yards from where he's betting.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: Um what and from other information? Are you looking for here?
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: Any anything else you want? This is your hypothetical scenario.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: So if there's any other factors you want lined up,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: you can line them up. I'm giving you whatever odds
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: you want to stack in your favor on this one,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: I'll give it to you. Or if that's if, if
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: that's if that's your scenario, we can let the dice no,
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, obviously, or you know, red moon evening
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: when the when the moon's perfect, you know, with a
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: with a wind blowing back into the bedding area from
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: the food source, so that deer feels super comfortable to
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: get up and move with the wind in his favor
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: towards um, towards his food source, you know. And then
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: to have you know, you know, high pressure day, high
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: bear metric pressure, making dear more active, you know, a
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: little cooler temperatures. I really really like an evening where
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: it rains in the afternoon and then clears off in
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: the sun comes out, because it seems like deer just
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: come out of the woodwork on those evenings. I think
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: when everything has a little bit of water on it,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: it's just it's almost like having salad dressing on your salad.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: You know, you would rather either dry salad or something
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: that's got you know, some moisture. And especially at that
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: time of the year when deer still eating beans and
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: get a little bit of water on the beans or
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: you know, clover or whatever they're eating. Just I don't
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: know what it is about these evenings after rain when
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: the sun comes out, but good Career says are great
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: evenings for the deer to move. So yeah, there's three
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: or four factors. Last week of October? What's your perfect
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: tree look like? Adam, I'm not as hung up on on,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: you know, being as high in a tree as I
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: used to be. I'm more concerned about cover. So obviously,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: you know, fifteen twenty ft off the ground, with plenty
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: of cover and a big tree to break up your
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: you know, your outline, your silhouette. I love you know
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: that question you asked me antlers or a grunt call.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: I just when I'm after a specific deer, when I'm
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: hunting the evenings, specially at that last week of October,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: I of to do a little light rattling, you know,
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: if I know I'm set up with an ear shot
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: of where Buck's betting, and I'm on his travel pattern,
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: hunting close to his rub line or maybe his scrape line.
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: And you know, when I rattle, I just want to
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: make enough noise that a deer knows where I'm at.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: And I'm trying to imitate a couple of younger bucks,
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: you know, in in a dominant bucks area, because that's
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: gonna just piss him off and he's gonna one up.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: Want to get up and you know, show everybody who's boss.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: And if he thinks there's a couple of younger bucks
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: messing around in his area, it seems like it's almost
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: too much for them not to get up. So you're
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: doing some light tickling with an ear shot of his bed.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: He's got the win in his favor to get up.
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: I mean, that's just I think it's a deadly combination,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: especially if you rattle before you think that deer is
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: up in because I think once a deer is up
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: and moving, it's hard to get him turned to come
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: your way. But if he can routle to a big
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: deer in his bed, I think you got more of
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: a chance of him getting up and heading in your
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: direction than if he's already up pet in an opposite addresstion.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: So I'd probably be doing a little light rattling right
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: about sunset, just before I think you're gonna be up moving,
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: when they're just laying there thinking about what they're gonna do.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: I like that. That would be my that would be
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: my perfect evening. All right, Well, I like to set up.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: I have confidence in your ability. I think you would
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: get the buck killed and you'll be able to keep
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: on hunting. So that's a that's what I think. So so, Adam,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: before we shut this down, can you just give us
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: an update on where we can learn more about everything
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: you've got going on, whether it's the moon Guide or
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: the show or any other projects you want us to
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: know about. Well, the Team two shows still running on
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: the Pursuit channel. All this was our eighth season Tuesday
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: nights at eight pm for Big Buck Tuesdays. All of
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: our old seasons are available through Waypoint TV, which if
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: anybody is not aware of Waypoint, it's UH free app
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: you can get on your phone. They got hundreds of
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: great shows on there. You can get the app on
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: your phone for free or watch it through what Waypoint
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: tv dot com and then they're actually available on just
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: about every h smart TV these days. Digitally. UH did
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: start a new YouTube channel, moon Guides Team two hundred um,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: which has got a lot of our lot of our
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: old episodes on it and some new stuff we're working
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: on moon Guide dot com for the moon Guide app
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: or the dial Um. We did just rebuild the app.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: It's got parcel data including it now and some other
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: pretty cool features. Completely rebuilt this year on a rock
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: solid platform, so some pretty cool stuff in there, and UM,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: as always, anybody that wants to reach out to me,
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: you can reach me through social media. UM team two hundred,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: moon guide dot com info at moon Guide for the
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: email on that. I'm a fairly easy guy to get
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: a hold of, and I answer every email or request
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: I get, So that's amazing. Somebody's got any questions about
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: how you know the moon works, what I think about it,
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: you know, um, really anything in general. I'm an open
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: book more than happy to talk about deer hunting, trying
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: to help guys out. So well, we certainly appreciate you
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: doing that with us here today at him It was
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: it was fun. And I guess my last question is
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: do you have the one picked out for this year yet?
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: Do you have a buck that's gonna check all the
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: boxes that you're gonna be targeting? May I have three
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: deer in Ohio that we're all like right at that
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: you know, mid sixties mark last year, and I've only
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: seen one of them so far, and I think he's
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: probably you know, probably past the one seventy mark this year.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: He didn't make as big of a jump as I thought,
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: but he's super heavy, massive ten point with a couple
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: of extra kickers. So it's going to be interesting if
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: these other two bucks show up what kind of jumps
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: they made. So I'm not sure that I'm got anything
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: north of two Ohio this year. Got one in Illinois
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: that still waiting to get pictures of that could definitely
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: crack two inches. Um big non typical that you know
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: was right at that or four and half five year
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: old mark last year that could just could be a
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: be a world class animal this year. So I can't
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: wait to see, you know that deer made it, just
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: waiting to seem show up on camera. And then I'm
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: keeping my fingers crossed that they're going to keep the
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: border open for Canada this year because it was going
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: to be able to hunt a world class dear there
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: last year, and obviously I couldn't get up there with
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: the border being shut down. And if that deer made
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: it this year, who knows what that thing is gonna
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: look like the biggest typical frame deer I've ever seen
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: in my life. So well, yeah, well we who wish
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: you the best of luck, and uh, let's chat again
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: after you kill a couple of those big guys and
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: find out how you did it. So sounds a good man. Well,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: appreciate you guys having me on. Hopefully I didn't make
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: a fool of myself. Now you passed the test. Hopefully
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: there's something in there that somebody picked up on that
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: will help him out to fall. But yeah, I appreciate
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: you guys having me on. Good luck this fall and
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: be safe. Thank you same same, right back at you.
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: And that's a rap. Thank you all for listening. I
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: appreciate it. Uh, just a little plug here, if you're
