- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the I&TM series and your daily influence and you know over the past several episodes we've talked about clarity, leadership, communication, building systems that are organizations to grow beyond any one individual.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to step back even further because before we can even leave a team before we can
- 1:12[SPEAKER_01]: build a culture, before we can even create a system, there is something that has to happen first.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_01]: We, as individuals, have to become responsible and understand our responsibility.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the greatest misconceptions in business is that influence comes from authority.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Look, influence doesn't come from authority.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: Influence begins the moment we accept
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, influence begins a minute, we just do anything.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: We're always influencing.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_01]: But look, responsibility isn't about blame.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's about ownership and ownership changes everything.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: People don't really follow the titles.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they understand that.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: And there's people out there who demand respect because of a title.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: But what they really follow is consistency.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: When leaders all mistakes keep commitments
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: and take action rather than make excuses.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: People begin trusting them.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: Responsibility creates credibility, credibility creates positive influence.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: And positive influence is what creates leadership.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: The order matters.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: Too many people want influence or want respect.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: Before they've earned their credibility, whether we recognize that or not,
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: how we respond under pressure, how we communicate, how we handle conflict, how we speak about our customers, how we treat people.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: Every decision teaches people what is accepted.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: Leaders often think they're managing operations, in reality, they are teaching culture.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: Culture is simply repeated behavior that people believe is expected, responsibility begins with understanding
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: someone else, organizations become trapped when everyone has a reason why something isn't their responsibility, sale of planes marketing, marketing blames operations, operations, planes finance, finance planes leadership, nothing improves, responsible organizations ask a different question, what part of this belongs to me?
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: That simple question changes conversations
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: Positive and responsible influential people don't spend their energy assigning faults.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: They invest it creating progress.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: One of the ideas we've been discussing recently is the simple statement.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: I am the Edwards.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: Now because I have the most authority, not because I'm always right, but because every conversation, every decision, every action,
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: Once we accept that reality and accept that responsibility, we begin making better decisions.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: Responsibility is not a burden.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's the beginning of intentional leadership.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: So as you go through a more day today, I encourage you to ask yourself one simple question, where can I take greater responsibility?
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's a difficult conversation, you've been avoiding.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's a commitment you allow to slid or don't want to make or haven't wanted to make.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's simply changing the way you respond when things don't go as planned.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because the moment we stop asking who's responsible and be insane, I am responsible, the positivity our influence begins to grow.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: And at high-end business advice, we believe that better business is being
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: with responsible equivalents.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for joining me again for another episode of daily equivalents.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: And until next time, find your equivalents be your equivalents and bills your equivalents because when each of us accepts a responsibility for the equivalents we have, we don't just build better organizations.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: We be
