- 1:09Speaker 1: co workers for the first time since being hired. Is
- 1:12Speaker 1: the Bengals play by play announcer In twenty eleven, I
- 1:15Speaker 1: missed a game. I am currently quarantining at home due
- 1:19Speaker 1: to contact tracing, and while I have not tested positive
- 1:23Speaker 1: and feel great, I'm not in the clear yet and
- 1:26Speaker 1: obviously don't want to risk spreading the virus. So thank
- 1:30Speaker 1: you to the Brown family and my co workers for
- 1:33Speaker 1: their understanding, and kudos to Mike Watts, who did a
- 1:37Speaker 1: terrific job in my place. Now let's get to Sunday's game.
- 1:42Speaker 1: The worst kept secret of the week was that the
- 1:44Speaker 1: Bengals starting quarterback would be Brandon Allen and not Ryan Finley.
- 1:49Speaker 1: The former Arkansas star has been on the practice squad
- 1:52Speaker 1: all season, but prepared for the possibility that he could
- 1:56Speaker 1: be thrown in there at a moment's notice. I think
- 1:58Speaker 1: you always have to have that onset, you know whether
- 2:02Speaker 1: you're the second string or the third sharing. I think
- 2:04Speaker 1: you have to go in meeting every week and know
- 2:07Speaker 1: that you're one play away, regardless of the position. So
- 2:11Speaker 1: that's how I've always prepared, whether I was on freshwater
- 2:15Speaker 1: or not. So I think that that's the only way,
- 2:19Speaker 1: the only mindset to have in the backup position rule.
- 2:22Speaker 1: But it took a while for Alan to even get
- 2:24Speaker 1: into the game. First, the Giants took the opening kickoff
- 2:28Speaker 1: and marched right down the field to score a fifty
- 2:31Speaker 1: three yard pass to tight end Evan Ingram, who beat
- 2:34Speaker 1: Von Bell on the play put the Giants inside the
- 2:38Speaker 1: five yard line. Good Jones sneak from here and Steady
- 2:40Speaker 1: hands off again, this time going airborne Golman into the
- 2:43Speaker 1: end zone for a Giant touchdown. Wayne Gallman's one yard
- 2:47Speaker 1: run made it seven nothing, but that lead only lasted
- 2:51Speaker 1: for eleven seconds. Brandon Wilson from a couple yards deep
- 2:54Speaker 1: in the end zone, he will take this out, his
- 2:56Speaker 1: nineteenth return of the year, and he's put it right
- 2:58Speaker 1: between the hatch, put it he chokes in. It's three minute.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It's Wilson going all the way inside the Tenny won't
- 3:06Speaker 1: be caught. Touchdown Cincinnati. That one hundred three yard kickoff
- 3:10Speaker 1: return by Brandon Wilson is a new Bengals record, topping
- 3:14Speaker 1: the one hundred two yard return that Eric Bienimy had
- 3:18Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety seven, also against the Giants. It's Wilson's
- 3:23Speaker 1: second kickoff return touchdown and that ties the franchise mark
- 3:27Speaker 1: held by Tremaine Mack. It tied the game at seven,
- 3:31Speaker 1: and Josh bind says it gave the Bengals a huge lift.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I think it just gave some juice to the team.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. I think it propelled everything for us.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And Brandon just a heck of a player. I love him,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and he just a great player, return man, gunn er,
- 3:47Speaker 1: whatever you wanted to do on special teams, and he's
- 3:49Speaker 1: just done an awesome job. And that play right there
- 3:51Speaker 1: was definitely something we talked about all week, and we
- 3:54Speaker 1: know Brandon's capable of it. I was on the other
- 3:57Speaker 1: end of it last year when I was in Baltimore
- 3:59Speaker 1: and he housed on when I was there last year,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and just to see him do it again because you
- 4:03Speaker 1: know he has great capabilities and great speed obviously because
- 4:05Speaker 1: you see nobody caught him. It was just so amazing.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Let's face it, for the Bengals to win behind a
- 4:11Speaker 1: backup quarterback, they were probably going to need big plays
- 4:14Speaker 1: on special teams and defense. Wilson came through in the
- 4:18Speaker 1: first quarter and Bell delivered in the second. It's a
- 4:22Speaker 1: fake handoff from Jones, fires into the zone and completes
- 4:25Speaker 1: at the fifteen, and that ball came lows. It's recovered
- 4:28Speaker 1: here by Vaughan Bell. Bell cutting back inside the numbers
- 4:31Speaker 1: at the forties and from behind brought down at the
- 4:34Speaker 1: forty five. They're marking it. Nope, they're not. They're saying
- 4:37Speaker 1: it's a fumble. He's not spotting the ball. That's a fumble.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It gave the Bengals the ball near midfield, and after
- 4:42Speaker 1: a couple of first downs by the offense, the Bengals
- 4:45Speaker 1: took the lead. If it's a forty four yard field
- 4:47Speaker 1: goal off the left, hash Huber gets the snap, it's
- 4:49Speaker 1: a good one. This is away from Bullock and he
- 4:53Speaker 1: nailed it right down the middle. That made a ten
- 4:56Speaker 1: seven Bengals. But that was it for the offense in
- 4:58Speaker 1: the first half, and since Natty managed just sixty six yards,
- 5:03Speaker 1: a Graham Gadot field goal with twenty one seconds left
- 5:05Speaker 1: and a half tied the game at ten. Here's Zach
- 5:09Speaker 1: Taylor on his team struggles on offense. Yeah, we never
- 5:12Speaker 1: found our rhythm, you know, and again our first down
- 5:14Speaker 1: efficiencies really where it got us. We were in a
- 5:17Speaker 1: lot of second eight, second nine, second ten, it felt like,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and that's not a girt risky against that defense. The
- 5:22Speaker 1: Bengals ran nineteen first down plays for a total of
- 5:26Speaker 1: fifty nine yards. That's three point one yards per first
- 5:30Speaker 1: down play. Twelve of those nineteen plays went for two
- 5:35Speaker 1: yards or less, and yet they were in it. The
- 5:39Speaker 1: Giants took a three point lead on their first drive
- 5:41Speaker 1: of the third quarter, but lost quarterback Daniel Jones on
- 5:45Speaker 1: the drive due to an injured hamstring. Thirty four year
- 5:48Speaker 1: old backup Colt McCoy doesn't exactly strike fear into the opposition,
- 5:54Speaker 1: but rather than move the ball, the Bengals started coughing
- 5:58Speaker 1: it up under forty seconds to go in the third quarter,
- 6:00Speaker 1: dropping the throw in this gun over the middle and
- 6:02Speaker 1: a gam popped up and is this time intercepted by
- 6:05Speaker 1: the Giants diving effort at the forty and yes it was.
- 6:09Speaker 1: It's picked off by New York Niko Lalos with a
- 6:13Speaker 1: diving I N T in his NFL debut. It led
- 6:17Speaker 1: to a fuel goal in a sixteen ten New York lead.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Down by six with less than five minutes to go,
- 6:24Speaker 1: the Bengals turned it over again four twenty four to go,
- 6:27Speaker 1: running clock fourth quarter, Bengals down six, with the ball
- 6:30Speaker 1: second and three from their own twenty one, Brandon Allen
- 6:32Speaker 1: throws short and Sample loses the football and Logan Ryan
- 6:37Speaker 1: pops on top of it, and it has a fumble
- 6:39Speaker 1: at the nineteen that led to another field goal that
- 6:42Speaker 1: made it nineteen ten. The Bengals were down but not
- 6:47Speaker 1: out as they put together their first touchdown drive of
- 6:50Speaker 1: the day. Off motion, fakes the handoff, looking left, does
- 6:54Speaker 1: an epernard, trailing away throws into the end zone, caught
- 6:57Speaker 1: touchsdown T Higgins one yard touchdown pass made at nineteen
- 7:02Speaker 1: seventeen with two and a half minutes to go. The
- 7:05Speaker 1: defense got a three and out, forcing the Giants to
- 7:08Speaker 1: punt from deep in their own territory, and it's driven high,
- 7:12Speaker 1: spiraling and long trailing all the way back to the
- 7:14Speaker 1: twenty three yard line, picked up by Ericsson across the
- 7:18Speaker 1: thirty stutters outside the thirty five. He's got a Bok
- 7:21Speaker 1: forty in fo He's wrapped up at the ankles at
- 7:25Speaker 1: the fifty yard line. He was nearly gone still. That
- 7:29Speaker 1: twenty nine yard return by Alex Rickson gave the Bengals
- 7:32Speaker 1: the ball at the fifty with roughly a minute to go,
- 7:36Speaker 1: needing one first down to give Randy Bullock a shot
- 7:39Speaker 1: at a game winning field goal. Try fifty seven six
- 7:42Speaker 1: to go, first and ten from midfield Allan, with Bernard
- 7:46Speaker 1: on his right, takes the snap clean pocket and now
- 7:49Speaker 1: he's under pressure. He lost the football still lose him
- 7:52Speaker 1: recovered by the Giants at the thirty seven yard line.
- 7:56Speaker 1: The fumble was forced by Jabaal Sheard, even though the
- 7:59Speaker 1: ben those chipped him with a tight end on the play.
- 8:02Speaker 1: He got by Drew Sample and then Jonah Williams to
- 8:05Speaker 1: force the fumble that basically ended the game. Here's Brandon Allen.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I knew we only needed about fifteen yards to get
- 8:14Speaker 1: with him field goal range. Had a little miscommunication with
- 8:18Speaker 1: me and TV. You know, I was expecting one thing
- 8:20Speaker 1: and he read a different way, and obviously I kind
- 8:23Speaker 1: of got stuck on him. And then from there, I
- 8:28Speaker 1: just gotta do a better job to take care of
- 8:29Speaker 1: the ball. Was trying to scramble and make a play,
- 8:31Speaker 1: but you know, in that situation, investing just trying to
- 8:34Speaker 1: get forward as far as I could. Allan finished seventeen
- 8:37Speaker 1: for twenty nine for one hundred and thirty six yards
- 8:39Speaker 1: with one touchdown, one interception, and the fumble. Here's how
- 8:43Speaker 1: he and Zach Taylor evaluated the quarterback Cincinnati debut. I'm
- 8:49Speaker 1: my own worst critics, so There's gonna be a lot
- 8:51Speaker 1: of things that I think I can do better. Obviously
- 8:54Speaker 1: the interception, putting a better ball placement where it's only
- 8:58Speaker 1: he can get a hand on it. And then obviously
- 9:00Speaker 1: the last play of the fumble was what cost us
- 9:03Speaker 1: the game. So um, there's definitely gonna be a lot
- 9:06Speaker 1: of things that I'll that I'll find on tape and
- 9:10Speaker 1: things I can get better at, whether that's a read
- 9:12Speaker 1: to throw or what. But I'll definitely get better from this.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I thought he did enough, you know, for us, and
- 9:17Speaker 1: the guys around him gonna step up. Two. Now, you know,
- 9:19Speaker 1: we had we had several drops, holding penalties when we
- 9:21Speaker 1: would get a completion, and you know, we only had
- 9:23Speaker 1: three possessions there in the first half, it felt like
- 9:25Speaker 1: we hardly ever had the ball, and then the second
- 9:27Speaker 1: half just never found a rhythm. But um, again, when
- 9:29Speaker 1: we would get something positive, it seemed like something on
- 9:31Speaker 1: the same play sent us back the other way. You know,
- 9:34Speaker 1: whether it was the there was there was three drops,
- 9:36Speaker 1: there was two holding penalties, there was a fumble on
- 9:38Speaker 1: a positive play, and you know it that'll hurt us.
- 9:41Speaker 1: New York's nineteen seventeen win puts the Giants in first
- 9:44Speaker 1: place in the NFC East with a four and seven record.
- 9:49Speaker 1: They take a tiebreaker with Washington by winning their two
- 9:52Speaker 1: meetings this year. The Bengals are two eight and one
- 9:55Speaker 1: and playing for pride. Here are Josh Bndes and Zach Taylor.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Everybody got to do their job and their role, That's
- 10:01Speaker 1: pretty much what I'm saying, and execute at a higher
- 10:04Speaker 1: level and not keep shooting ourselves in the foot making
- 10:08Speaker 1: big mistakes and no big mistakes turned into big plays.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And it just and it hurts us and we you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and we sit on this other side of the of
- 10:15Speaker 1: an l and it just sucks each and every week
- 10:18Speaker 1: because you know, guys are giving all the effort and
- 10:20Speaker 1: studying their behinds off and we just follow one one
- 10:22Speaker 1: place short. You're down nineteen to ten in the fourth quarter,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and role, your offense hasn't done anything the entire game.
- 10:27Speaker 1: But but everybody just kept kept grinding and trying to
- 10:31Speaker 1: make plays that they were capable of making. And then
- 10:33Speaker 1: you look at it. The defense got a huge stop.
- 10:35Speaker 1: You know, offense goes down and score seven points. Defense
- 10:38Speaker 1: gets a monster stop there on the backed up situation.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Point return team gets a huge point return and put
- 10:44Speaker 1: your offense in the position to go win the game,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and it just didn't work out that way. But that
- 10:48Speaker 1: tells you everything you need to know about these these
- 10:50Speaker 1: players in this locker room and everything that I see
- 10:51Speaker 1: every day and know, and um, they're playing hard for
- 10:54Speaker 1: each other and it's going to turn for us at
- 10:56Speaker 1: some point, you know. That's why I told him. It's frustrating,
- 10:58Speaker 1: your sick, your stomach, so it's not fun to lose.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But we know that this tide is going to turn
- 11:05Speaker 1: for us, and we're gonna look back on this and
- 11:07Speaker 1: this is a necessary part of our growth, but we
- 11:09Speaker 1: need to get some wins to show for all the
- 11:11Speaker 1: work that we're putting in, because it's makes it tough
- 11:13Speaker 1: when you finish games like this. Since the start of
- 11:15Speaker 1: last year, the Bengals are one thirteen and one in
- 11:19Speaker 1: games decided by one score. Now time for postgame analysis
- 11:24Speaker 1: with my broadcast partner Dave Lapham. The Bengals have followed
- 11:29Speaker 1: the formula pretty closely. They got his special team score.
- 11:32Speaker 1: The defense played well, but the offense simply didn't do
- 11:37Speaker 1: enough to get over the top against the Giants. Yeah,
- 11:40Speaker 1: that saysn't in a nuts y'all, Dan, no question. I
- 11:43Speaker 1: mean Brandon Wilson hunting three yard kickoff return, you get
- 11:46Speaker 1: an unscripted, unscheduled score that way. I mean, that's just
- 11:49Speaker 1: what the doctor ordered. Defense gets to take away. You
- 11:52Speaker 1: get three points off of that. Offense takes advantage of it.
- 11:57Speaker 1: And then Kevin Huber was unbelievable. I mean, you have
- 12:00Speaker 1: forty six forty seven yards a punt maybe more three
- 12:04Speaker 1: or four times, pinned them down not only inside the twenty,
- 12:08Speaker 1: inside the ten yard line. I think it was the
- 12:10Speaker 1: eleven yard line once and the ten yard line a
- 12:12Speaker 1: couple of three times. I mean he was incredible putting
- 12:15Speaker 1: them on long field, So all of that was part
- 12:17Speaker 1: of the formula. Put them on long field, try to
- 12:19Speaker 1: get some short fields, get an unscripted score. But offensively,
- 12:23Speaker 1: way too many three and outs and no no rhythm,
- 12:25Speaker 1: no no timing. Everything was definitely hit or miss offensively.
- 12:31Speaker 1: What'd you think of Brandon Allen? I think that he
- 12:34Speaker 1: did everything he could. I don't think the support system
- 12:38Speaker 1: was there Offensively, no running game. I don't care who
- 12:41Speaker 1: the quarterback is. When the longest run I think was
- 12:43Speaker 1: the fake punt. You know that was another play Darren
- 12:46Speaker 1: Simmons crew came up with that was a critical extension,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you know, of a series with the fake punt. Keep
- 12:54Speaker 1: the offense on the football field. Now, can you throw
- 12:58Speaker 1: interceptions and have fumbles in those kind of things and all?
- 13:00Speaker 1: You'd like to have ball security in that regard. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm sure he's going to be his own worst critic,
- 13:05Speaker 1: but boy, there wasn't any running games, so they were
- 13:08Speaker 1: teeing off in that front four. They're big, powerful, They
- 13:12Speaker 1: pushed the pocket rushers. They'll twist and stunt. They don't
- 13:15Speaker 1: necessarily have to blitz. They rushed four and they played
- 13:19Speaker 1: very deep zone coverages instead. You're not throwing the ball
- 13:21Speaker 1: over our head. We're keeping everything in front of us.
- 13:24Speaker 1: You're gonna have to beat us with short, intermediate throws
- 13:27Speaker 1: and you're gonna have to do it a lot. You're
- 13:29Speaker 1: gonna have to go on long, extended drives, and we
- 13:31Speaker 1: don't think you can do it. And that was their
- 13:33Speaker 1: game plan and they ended up being right. Last week
- 13:36Speaker 1: against Washington, the Bengals had two hundred and forty seven
- 13:39Speaker 1: yards of offense in the first half after Joe Burrow
- 13:42Speaker 1: went out eighteen plays seventeen yards. This week, forty six
- 13:48Speaker 1: plays one hundred and fifty five yards. That's one hundred
- 13:51Speaker 1: and seventy two yards basically in six quarters, an average
- 13:54Speaker 1: of two point seven yards per play. It shows you
- 13:59Speaker 1: just how value well Joe Burrow is to this offense.
- 14:02Speaker 1: There's no doubt. I mean, he's a dynamic football player,
- 14:06Speaker 1: and honestly, everything was tilted toward him getting ready to
- 14:10Speaker 1: do those things. So any quarterback that was on the
- 14:14Speaker 1: roster was not getting a whole lot of snaps, a
- 14:17Speaker 1: whole lot of reps, and it showed. And Ryan Finlay
- 14:20Speaker 1: went in there, and I think, you know, Brandon Allen
- 14:22Speaker 1: will be better next week than he was this week.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'm not sure that he's playing a pretty damn good defense,
- 14:27Speaker 1: though the Miami Dolphins have a pretty good squad as well.
- 14:30Speaker 1: They win games with special teams and defensive excellence. So
- 14:34Speaker 1: the Bengals are going down there to Miami to face
- 14:36Speaker 1: the same type of thing. So that's life in the
- 14:39Speaker 1: National Football League. And yeah, I mean, Joe Burrow is
- 14:45Speaker 1: really really special in terms of the way he sees
- 14:47Speaker 1: the football field, makes quick decisions and moves his football team.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And it was very evident that they're lacking without him
- 14:55Speaker 1: under center or in the shotgun formation. I hate to
- 14:58Speaker 1: pay an overly a row the picture after a game
- 15:01Speaker 1: like that. Did the fight show you something? It did?
- 15:05Speaker 1: You know? I think that it's it's awful easy to
- 15:07Speaker 1: just coast the game out, you know, and not you
- 15:11Speaker 1: know it's over, and you know and this and here's
- 15:14Speaker 1: another one. You know, this one, this one's out out
- 15:16Speaker 1: of reach, particularly when they kicked the field goal and
- 15:18Speaker 1: they went up two scores. But they finally put together
- 15:20Speaker 1: a drive, big big pass interference penalty and the touchdown
- 15:25Speaker 1: passed to t Higgins and and then you know the
- 15:28Speaker 1: fact that instead of the onside kick, they decided to
- 15:31Speaker 1: kick it deep and play defense and it worked out
- 15:33Speaker 1: and they get a good return. Alex Erickson does a
- 15:37Speaker 1: good job. There's another special teams play. I mean, Darren Simmons'
- 15:40Speaker 1: group did everything they possibly could. It was by far,
- 15:43Speaker 1: in my estimation, by far, the best special team's performance
- 15:47Speaker 1: of the season. And it couldn't have come at a
- 15:49Speaker 1: more necessary time to have that type of performance. And
- 15:53Speaker 1: I thought that third of the three three phases of
- 15:56Speaker 1: football was the best today. And then defense number two
- 15:59Speaker 1: and offense are very very very very distant third. This
- 16:03Speaker 1: was the seventh different starting offensive line in eleven games.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Quinn Spain got the started left guard in place of
- 16:10Speaker 1: Michael Jordan, and then during the game Alex Redmond suffered
- 16:13Speaker 1: a concussion. Spain went back to the right side, Michael
- 16:16Speaker 1: Jordan came in on the left side. What did you
- 16:19Speaker 1: think of the way the O line played? The pass
- 16:21Speaker 1: protection was tough? I mean the fact that they could
- 16:25Speaker 1: not get the running game going any modicum of success.
- 16:29Speaker 1: You know, now you're in a situation where defensive linemen
- 16:31Speaker 1: are just teeing off on you. It's like pass rush drill.
- 16:35Speaker 1: And that's the toughest drill to handle as an offensive
- 16:37Speaker 1: lineman when there's there's a total disregard for the run
- 16:40Speaker 1: and all you're doing is pinning yours back and getting
- 16:42Speaker 1: after the quarterback. And that's what the Bengals faced offensive
- 16:45Speaker 1: line wise for most of the football game. Some of
- 16:48Speaker 1: that their own doing, obviously, by not being able to
- 16:50Speaker 1: form enough creases in the running game to get the
- 16:52Speaker 1: running game was some kind of modicum of success. And
- 16:57Speaker 1: with that, defensive line's pretty good. Some beast that can
- 17:00Speaker 1: push the pocket and they don't blitz much, but they'll
- 17:03Speaker 1: twist and stunt up front and make life tougher that way,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and they make you make you earn everything in terms
- 17:11Speaker 1: of pass protection, and I thought that, uh, you know,
- 17:14Speaker 1: there were sometimes there was there were pockets, but a
- 17:17Speaker 1: lot of times Brandon Allen did not get through every
- 17:20Speaker 1: Every play has a three progression read and then the
- 17:24Speaker 1: fourth wants to check down then run. I'm not sure
- 17:26Speaker 1: he was getting all three through, all three progressions before
- 17:29Speaker 1: he had to check it down or try to run
- 17:30Speaker 1: the football, and then he was getting hit in the
- 17:32Speaker 1: pocket and didn't have ball security well enough at the
- 17:35Speaker 1: end of the football game. We saw Ryan Finley make
- 17:38Speaker 1: three starts last year and play the second half last week.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I don't know about you. I feel better about the
- 17:45Speaker 1: Bengals chances of winning a game that Brandon Allen had
- 17:48Speaker 1: quarterback instead of Ryan Finley based on what we saw today. Yeah,
- 17:53Speaker 1: I think the two that I mean Brandon Allen lit
- 17:57Speaker 1: it up at practice Wednesday's practice. He did not have
- 17:59Speaker 1: an in completion and I think that he bought he
- 18:03Speaker 1: won some guys over that way. I think there was
- 18:05Speaker 1: a validation there. I think they know he can spin it,
- 18:08Speaker 1: he can zip the ball. I think they know he
- 18:10Speaker 1: can be accurate. But you know, it's not just one guy.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I mean, everybody has to help Brandon Allen, and I
- 18:18Speaker 1: think they like his way, his demeanor, the way he
- 18:21Speaker 1: leads the football team, the way he takes control of
- 18:23Speaker 1: the huddle. So yeah, and Zach Taylor has already said
- 18:28Speaker 1: that Brandon Allen's the starting quarterback in Miami. So see
- 18:31Speaker 1: if they can start to build on the experience that
- 18:34Speaker 1: they were exposed to here against the New York Football Giants,
- 18:38Speaker 1: who's a pretty darned good defensive football team. That's there's
- 18:41Speaker 1: no question about it. I think that that's as good
- 18:43Speaker 1: an overall defensive football team as the Bengals might have
- 18:46Speaker 1: played this year. That's a little disappointed in the play
- 18:48Speaker 1: of the wide receiving crew. Te Higgins was targeted five
- 18:51Speaker 1: times and caught all five, including his touchdown, but Tyler
- 18:54Speaker 1: Boyd had a big drop. AJ Green did not have
- 18:57Speaker 1: a catch when he was targeted three times. I'm sure
- 19:00Speaker 1: some of that is different timing with a different quarterback,
- 19:03Speaker 1: but those guys are going to have to step up
- 19:05Speaker 1: and play great in order for the Bengals to win.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I agree, it's going to have to be a scenario
- 19:11Speaker 1: like that even the very sure handed Giovanni Bernard dropped
- 19:14Speaker 1: the ball, you know, out of the backfield on a
- 19:16Speaker 1: third and one. I think if he catches it, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 1: he probably the chains are probably moves. So yeah. It's
- 19:22Speaker 1: the thing is, you're in a situation offensively, and it's
- 19:25Speaker 1: a very tough situation. You know, During the course of
- 19:28Speaker 1: a ten year, actually a twelve year career in professional football,
- 19:32Speaker 1: I've been in situations where you have no margin for error,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and man, that's a brutal way to have to try
- 19:40Speaker 1: to play football. It's like, it's it's it's impossible. Really,
- 19:44Speaker 1: there are going to be mistakes made, and all you
- 19:46Speaker 1: hope for in that situation is that it doesn't become
- 19:50Speaker 1: contagious multiple mistakes are made, or the mistakes that are
- 19:53Speaker 1: made become catastrophic and they are monumentally huge mistakes. You know,
- 19:59Speaker 1: again margin for errors and impossibility, but you hope that
- 20:02Speaker 1: the error that you make is not game deciding error.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And that's what the Bengals are looking at offensively right now.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You know, they just don't want to make mistakes that
- 20:12Speaker 1: lose the football game and hope that defense and special
- 20:15Speaker 1: teams give them enough support where they can win a
- 20:18Speaker 1: couple of football games. Well, I'll tell you this, it
- 20:21Speaker 1: wasn't a lot of fun watching on TV. So I
- 20:23Speaker 1: look forward to being back in the booth hopefully next
- 20:26Speaker 1: Sunday as the Bengals head to Miami. I can tell you,
- 20:30Speaker 1: my partner, you are sorely missed. You are the best
- 20:33Speaker 1: in the business, and I look forward to doing a
- 20:35Speaker 1: game with you against the Dolphins. Thanks buddy, Thank you, sir.
- 20:39Speaker 1: The Dolphins are seven and four after beating the winless
- 20:42Speaker 1: Jets on Sunday twenty to three. Two A Tungo Vloa
- 20:46Speaker 1: missed the game with an injured left thumb, but head
- 20:49Speaker 1: coach Brian Flores says if he's healthy, he'll start against
- 20:52Speaker 1: the Bengals next week. The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented
- 20:56Speaker 1: by Bud Light Seltzer. It's light and refreshing with a
- 21:00Speaker 1: fruit flavor. Now time for this week's fun Facts segment,
- 21:04Speaker 1: where you get to know the person under the pads.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts with offensive lineman Akim Identagy
- 21:11Speaker 1: from Garland, Texas. I came, I've read that your mom
- 21:14Speaker 1: is from Nigeria, where she was a TV news anchor.
- 21:18Speaker 1: How did the Identagy family wind up in Texas. About
- 21:21Speaker 1: thirty years ago. My mom and dad you know, decided
- 21:25Speaker 1: to come out to America just for you know, the opportunities,
- 21:29Speaker 1: and thirty years later here we are. Tell me a
- 21:32Speaker 1: little bit about growing up in Garland and what your
- 21:35Speaker 1: interests were as a kid. Oh man, I was big
- 21:39Speaker 1: into sports obviously, football, basketball, you know, just everything, video
- 21:44Speaker 1: game guy, nothing crazy. I love to cook a lot
- 21:48Speaker 1: and no did a lot of things from my big
- 21:51Speaker 1: brother too. You love to cook. Do you have a
- 21:53Speaker 1: go to dish? I'm really creative with it and so
- 21:57Speaker 1: I like to mix it up. I wouldn't say I
- 22:00Speaker 1: had a specific go to this, just really I like,
- 22:04Speaker 1: you know, mixing it up, trying new things, being creative,
- 22:07Speaker 1: learning new recipes, different cultures, this and that. We're doing
- 22:10Speaker 1: fun facts with it came identagy. You're a large man,
- 22:13Speaker 1: six four, three hundred and two pounds. Were you always
- 22:16Speaker 1: the big kids in the neighborhood? I kind of was.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I wasn't always the biggest though. I was always like,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you know, pretty big up there, but I was never
- 22:24Speaker 1: like the biggest one. I had like steady growth. So
- 22:28Speaker 1: that's that. How do you compare with your older brother
- 22:32Speaker 1: I'm bigger than him now. I remember he's well, he's
- 22:35Speaker 1: considerably smaller than me now at this point, but I
- 22:38Speaker 1: probably he's six two, maybe two fifties now. He doesn't
- 22:43Speaker 1: play football anymore. But I passed him up probably when
- 22:47Speaker 1: I was about thirteen years old. I came when did
- 22:50Speaker 1: you start playing football? And when did you start dreaming
- 22:53Speaker 1: about the NFL? Man, I've been playing football since I
- 22:56Speaker 1: was five six years old, and ever since then, it's
- 23:00Speaker 1: always been my goal. Just you know, growing up in Garland,
- 23:03Speaker 1: in the Dallas area, I watched the Cowboys. I was
- 23:06Speaker 1: a big Cowboys fan growing up my whole life, and
- 23:08Speaker 1: watching my brother play, I always wanting to do what
- 23:10Speaker 1: he did, and so you know those things right there.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Ever since you know, I started playing, it's been a
- 23:15Speaker 1: dream of mine for you know, almost two decades now.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Your older brother played at air Force and you were
- 23:22Speaker 1: going to follow him there, and then a few weeks
- 23:25Speaker 1: before you were set to report, everything changed. Describe what happened, man,
- 23:31Speaker 1: So you know, I still remember this day because it
- 23:33Speaker 1: was just such a big turning point. I got an
- 23:36Speaker 1: email saying that my medical way was declined because I
- 23:39Speaker 1: have a cashiology, which is self seems small, but you know,
- 23:43Speaker 1: you know, the military, they have their certain rules and
- 23:46Speaker 1: things like that, and the football coaches couldn't do anything
- 23:49Speaker 1: about it. And so being at the Air Force, a
- 23:52Speaker 1: lot of schools had already reported, and I was waiting
- 23:56Speaker 1: to go into you know, basic training. So we're we're
- 24:00Speaker 1: a month into you know, most freshman being on campus
- 24:04Speaker 1: for football activities, and I have no clue where I'm
- 24:07Speaker 1: gonna go. When did you learn of your cashew allergy
- 24:11Speaker 1: and what happens if you eat one? I learned pretty early,
- 24:16Speaker 1: not that early, I guess, I would say maybe around
- 24:18Speaker 1: nine ten years old when I just like I had
- 24:20Speaker 1: I never knew which specific that's it was, but I
- 24:24Speaker 1: mean I remember, you know, on a few instances, having
- 24:28Speaker 1: like small amounts of it and then just throwing up,
- 24:31Speaker 1: nauseating all of this, and I'm just like, Okay, I
- 24:34Speaker 1: can't do this. So I pretty much stayed away from
- 24:36Speaker 1: all of them until I finally got tested and realized
- 24:38Speaker 1: it was just just cashews. But yeah, I mean, when
- 24:42Speaker 1: I have them, intis not good, even like the smallest
- 24:44Speaker 1: amount can trigger a pretty big reaction. We're doing fun
- 24:48Speaker 1: facts with a chem identity. Do you look at labels
- 24:51Speaker 1: really closely to make sure that you never accidentally have one.
- 24:58Speaker 1: If there's anything that I know might having in there
- 25:00Speaker 1: or I'm at a restaurant, I'm very skeptical, especially with like, um,
- 25:05Speaker 1: some cultural dishes, like whether it be like a Mediterranean
- 25:10Speaker 1: type of dish. I'm very like cheating because I know,
- 25:13Speaker 1: you know, certain people like to cook with certain foods.
- 25:16Speaker 1: So the air force went down the drain because of
- 25:19Speaker 1: the cashew allergy and you wound up at Kansas. What
- 25:23Speaker 1: was your initial impression of Lawrence, Kansas? It was different.
- 25:26Speaker 1: It was different from what I'm used to. There's not
- 25:30Speaker 1: nearly as much to do out there, but you know,
- 25:33Speaker 1: ultimately I had a lot of fun and made a
- 25:36Speaker 1: lot of friends and had a lot of good time.
- 25:38Speaker 1: What was the best part of your college experience? Me
- 25:41Speaker 1: and my girlfriend who who probably be my wife here
- 25:45Speaker 1: soon and that I definitely that takes the cake for sure.
- 25:49Speaker 1: That's a good answer, especially if she's nearby and can hear.
- 25:53Speaker 1: So the basketball team was a powerhouse you were in Kansas.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Did you go to the games at Alan field House
- 26:03Speaker 1: and become buddies with any of the basketball players. I
- 26:06Speaker 1: went to a few games. I didn't go to a
- 26:08Speaker 1: whole lot just because it gets so packed in there
- 26:11Speaker 1: and you have to get you have to get to
- 26:12Speaker 1: the game like maybe three four hours before to even
- 26:16Speaker 1: get a decent seat, and obviously we have stuff to do.
- 26:20Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean I got I have one real
- 26:22Speaker 1: good friend that he's in the same class, and so
- 26:24Speaker 1: he'll he'll be getting drafted here pretty soon, my boy, dope.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But but yeah, he's a real good friend. And the
- 26:32Speaker 1: basketball games were always fun. There were such a such
- 26:34Speaker 1: a good team. Do you know why KU fans say
- 26:39Speaker 1: rock chalk Jayhawk? I found out and I don't remember,
- 26:43Speaker 1: though I remember when I heard the reasoning behind it.
- 26:47Speaker 1: It wasn't that significant to me, but it sounds cool.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Though it does sound cool. It's one of those stories
- 26:53Speaker 1: where the answer is not that great, so I can
- 26:56Speaker 1: understand why you would forget so original late it was
- 27:01Speaker 1: raw raw Jayhawk, and then a professor suggested they change
- 27:06Speaker 1: it to rock chalk Jayhawk because there's limestone in the area.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, yeah, good, Okay. Now if you get
- 27:16Speaker 1: quized on that again, you'll be all set unless I
- 27:19Speaker 1: forget again. Describe your NFL draft experience, Man, This year
- 27:24Speaker 1: was was so different because of you know, COVID and
- 27:28Speaker 1: then just everything going on. Um, it was. It was
- 27:33Speaker 1: fun though. I mean I always say that, you know,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I tell my buddies in this draft class and everybody,
- 27:39Speaker 1: I'm like, we're gonna be able to say we had
- 27:41Speaker 1: the first virtual draft, Like you know what I'm saying,
- 27:44Speaker 1: It's gonna be wild. Yeah, hopefully the first and only.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah for real, but we'll be you know. That's that's
- 27:53Speaker 1: pretty special though, I think so. All right, a few
- 27:56Speaker 1: more fun facts for Hakimadnagy? What do you like to
- 27:59Speaker 1: spend your money on? I am cheap. I did not
- 28:03Speaker 1: like to spend my money at off. I like to
- 28:06Speaker 1: spend my money on my bank account and just put
- 28:08Speaker 1: it in there. If I don't have to spend money,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I won't. I guess if I had to say something
- 28:15Speaker 1: I like to spend my money on, you know, if
- 28:18Speaker 1: I had to get something nice from my mom and
- 28:20Speaker 1: my brother and my girlfriend. I find more pleasure in
- 28:23Speaker 1: that than just spending my money on me. That's good.
- 28:27Speaker 1: That's frugal. That's not cheap. That's frugal. That's fine. Who
- 28:32Speaker 1: is the greatest athlete in any sport? That has to
- 28:36Speaker 1: be Lebron James for sure, he has to be. He's
- 28:39Speaker 1: just he's a freak. Uh, he has the production to
- 28:42Speaker 1: back it up. Just I mean, you just watch him.
- 28:46Speaker 1: I think we'll look back one day and be like,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you know how how the old folks before is they're like, oh,
- 28:52Speaker 1: we saw George, We're gonna be like we saw Lebron.
- 28:54Speaker 1: You're never gonna You're never gonna get this again. Yeah,
- 28:58Speaker 1: I'm one of those old folks that would have said
- 28:59Speaker 1: that about Jordan. So so you go on, Jordan and Lebron.
- 29:03Speaker 1: You know what, this championship this year swung me over
- 29:05Speaker 1: to Lebron. Okay, this one broke the tie. All right.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Final fun fact for Hakim Idenagy. If you couldn't meet
- 29:14Speaker 1: anybody in history, athlete, entertainer, statesman, whatever, who would that
- 29:21Speaker 1: person be. Oh, that's a good question. Anybody in history.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I guess the person who invented football. I don't even
- 29:31Speaker 1: know who that is. It's simple, but it's very There's
- 29:34Speaker 1: so many things too us. So I'll say, yeah, you
- 29:38Speaker 1: are officially off the hot seat, Hakim. I appreciate your time,
- 29:41Speaker 1: best of luck the rest of the year. Thanks Dan,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Here's a quick reminder to join lap
- 29:47Speaker 1: Hand Lance McAlister for Bengals Line Monday night from six
- 29:50Speaker 1: to nine on seven hundred WLW. That's going to do it.
