- 0:00Coming up on this week's episode of hip Hop Now podcast. Hip hop was
- 0:06number one in twenty twenty three, but do sales equal quality or popularity?
- 0:13The tenth anniversary of Isaiah Rashad's debut, Sylvia's Demo needs to be discussed,
- 0:22and Bennie the Butcher calls fans, nerds and declass his new album will be
- 0:28the best death jam album since DMX's debute. We have to talk about this.
- 0:37Let's do it. Welcome to Jim Hoop Now Podcasts. Did you from
- 0:46the future? You know what to do? Show ass out about don't disrespect

- 1:19four. If you missed it, I did a whole show that was a
- 1:22preview twenty twenty four, mainly about what albums I expect, what albums may
- 1:30happen, and what albums I wish would happen. And no Detox is not
- 1:37on it. I've moved on. Finally, Dre is never going to Dre's
- 1:41sitting on so many projects and albums because he doesn't deem them perfect that we're
- 1:49just missing out. And I get it. I get it, Dre.
- 1:53If it ain't perfect, it ain't right. And for a man who maybe
- 1:59that after Man Presents was his weakest album, everything else has been gold.
- 2:02So I get it. I get it. And when I say that,
- 2:06I'm talking about the Chronic Chronic two thousand and one as well as the Compton
- 2:10album. That Compton album, like Yo, the sound quality, it was
- 2:15a good album, you know in general. But man, if you got
- 2:20a good system or in your car, in your house, you know,
- 2:24just something where headphones, something where you can get all the intricacies in the
- 2:32sound out through your this is audiophile talk through your speakers or whatever you're using

- 4:04hip hopdx dot com, All hip Hop dot com, TheSource magazine dot com,
- 4:13and a couple of places where I get some of these stories from Let's
- 4:16get right into the business. Say, hip hop was number one in twenty
- 4:25twenty three, But like I said in the intro, if you're listening to
- 4:30audio version, what does that mean? Right? So this article comes from
- 4:36hip hop DX. Hip Hop ranked number one genre of twenty twenty three despite
- 4:42slow sales start. So I'm gonna read a couple of lines for y'all.
- 4:46Then you have to go and support hip hop DX. Read the whole article.
- 4:49Hip Hop may have had a slow start in the commercial space in twenty
- 4:54twenty three, but yeah end reports indicate that it's still reigned supreme upon ross
- 5:00in the finish line. On Wednesday, January tenth, chart Data shared that
- 5:03R and B slash hip hop was the number one genre in the US in
- 5:09twenty twenty three, with two hundred and seventy seven point twenty seven million total
- 5:15album equivalents sold. That's twenty five point three percent of the market. And
- 5:23then for those you know who don't want to do the math, it's spread
- 5:28amongst the other genres of music like country and rock and all that stuff,
- 5:32right, but hip hop dominates with the line's share of that. Now,
- 5:39what's interesting about this? And I should probably follow chart data on Twitter.
- 5:47That's just me. What's interesting about this is there was a conversation in twenty
- 5:56twenty three about the performance of hip hop right, why records aren't really selling
- 6:02like they used to. That's not really news, right because I think streaming
- 6:09services and especially now when you have retailers like Best Buy, Target deciding,
- 6:15you know, physical media isn't it anymore, because it isn't right when new
- 6:19albums drop, no one's no one's driving well two we all, but no
- 6:27one's really driving to their local record store if they still exist in your area,
- 6:33or we're not counting vinyl that's a whole different thing. Or going to
- 6:40you know, the local Target or Walmart to be like, yo, I
- 6:42gotta go get I heard you know, Benny the Butcher new albums out,
- 6:46Let me go get it. That's not a thing anymore. It's unfortunate,
- 6:50but it's not what happens. Right. The music enthusiasts for the most part,
- 6:57and the fans, we either stay up for the release at midnight so
- 7:03that we could hear it and then go and tweet about it and all that,
- 7:09or like me, if you're an old man, like I listened to
- 7:11it in the morning when I'm in a gym, because that's what I do.
- 7:15But never do I sit here and say, yo, I gotta go
- 7:18pick that up because why because it's just super convenient, right, Like it's
- 7:25already the album's already loaded here. It's the same thing with video games.
- 7:30Right. We used to go midnight madness, Oh new Madden's out, Go
- 7:33wait online and get it. Do that No more. I pre order it
- 7:39in advance, it downloads at midnight. I feel like checking it out at
- 7:42night, I do. If not, I wait in the morning, it
- 7:44already have it, right, Like jay Z said on one of his songs,
- 7:47I'm already home. Okay. So in a lot of ways, the
- 7:54way we consume new music and music in general, and it's kind of like
- 8:01the gift and a curse. But it has changed. And what makes it
- 8:05the gift for a music fan like myself is I get to listen to more
- 8:11than I would have back in the day where I had twenty dollars and I
- 8:16came here to buy two albums, and for the most part, I couldn't
- 8:20listen to all the ones I was interested in. I almost had to know
- 8:22what I wanted or be curious enough to go and buy it right to check
- 8:28it out. Now you can sample everything. You can decide I'm gonna just
- 8:31stream it. You can decide I'm gonna buy it from iTunes or whoever.
- 8:37But it's just a different world. And I think when you think look at
- 8:39these numbers, hip hop is within every genre for the most part. Right,
- 8:46It's influences all over the place. That's why they clump, especially more
- 8:52than ever now, that's why they clump R and B and hip hop together
- 8:54because I mean a lot of these singers, they damn their rapid. To
- 8:58be honest, they're not really singing singing right, you don't get enough ballots
- 9:01to show their skill in their genre of music, which is closely related to
- 9:07soul music than anything. It's more like hip hop and it's it's in everything.
- 9:15So it makes sense. But the question is is it the number one
- 9:22genre because of quality or popularity? I think it's the latter, as much
- 9:31as we may feel like there are artists who completely release nothing but quality music
- 9:37all the time. Now, I'm not just talking about an older generation,
- 9:41but I'm talking about a younger generation. Even Cats who's been in the game
- 9:46for like ten years, or whatever. They do not add up to the
- 9:52majority of music that's getting released that's making this popular, making this art film
- 9:58popular. A lot of it it is artists who some of y'all don't like.
- 10:03You know what I'm saying, It's all of them. It's that whole
- 10:07fact that the conversation around hip hop is stronger than the music itself when you
- 10:13look at you know, all of it. And that's a problem for a
- 10:20music fan like myself because I like quality, you know what I'm saying.
- 10:24I like catchy stuff, and you know, there are a couple of things
- 10:26I rock with because I'm like y'all, I like it. It's cool,
- 10:30right doesn't have to be barking, music, doesn't have to be boom back.
- 10:35But if it's cool, I like it right now. That doesn't mean
- 10:39I'm as invested in your music as I was with a Nas or jay Z
- 10:46you know, or Big or Pok or people like that who generally released quality
- 10:52music. Right most death Cougi rap, you know. And I know there
- 10:58would be a debate on Okay, well, yeah, it's popular, but
- 11:01it's popular because it's good. No, it's not not in every case because
- 11:07I will literally watch people on social media defend and artists by using their finances
- 11:18or their popularity right or record sales, And that was always a thing.
- 11:26They never really quote the music and what they're doing with the music. They
- 11:31only defend yo it's lit, or they only defend the finances and the popularity
- 11:39of it. But quality music can get you both of that at and both
- 11:43of those things anyway, right now, I'm trying not to be biased,
- 11:48but I know Kendrick is my guy. He's able to be popular and make
- 11:56money and still have in tech within the art he creates. Now not many
- 12:03people get that nowadays, and and I dig it. But that's a great
- 12:09example of there was a time where you made money and you were just as
- 12:16popular because your music was good and it was thoughtful. Talking about what you
- 12:24bought that ain't really original, I mean it's not. But maybe if you
- 12:33do it in a unique way, it's dope. But a lot of y'all
- 12:35are not doing it. Yeah, yeah, there's no uniqueness to what you
- 12:39do. You say what everybody else is saying, talking about your vagina.
- 12:43Because it's a family show, we're gonna say, but John, we're gonna
- 12:46go with that as your basis for who you are and why you're dope.
- 12:54Come on, man, who who were impressed by that? Virgins? Maybe
- 13:03maybe not even in so you see what I'm saying, Like, there has
- 13:09to be more than just popularity. Now, it's dope that hip hop is
- 13:15as popular as it is. But this debate is not gonna go anywhere because
- 13:18music lovers from decades of music of different genres know when they see quality work.
- 13:28Just look at Tea Paine and his covers posted that Covers album months ago,
- 13:35nobody said nothing. I told you how he was sanging, came out
- 13:39with a live version, did some videos, and now you're like, oh,
- 13:41keep paying and sing without the Come on, Jack, let's let's just
- 13:46move on to the next topic. The tenth anniversary of Isaiah Rashad's debut Sylvia's
- 13:58Demo happens right here in twenty twenty four. If you from twenty twenty five
- 14:03and you're watching this and it's mad, old, get your ass out of
- 14:05here. You already know, man, you already know. Okay, But
- 14:11two things about the tenth anniversary of this project or this debut and why I
- 14:18chose to point it out. I don't hear enough about this brother Isaiah was
- 14:24shot. He's nice with it on the mic. He puts out quality work.
- 14:31We talked about quality, right, but he just doesn't get enough love
- 14:37in my opinion, right, Like, there are a number of people who
- 14:43are here being talked about all the time who are also nice, who I
- 14:48don't know lyrically, they just not as thoughtful about what they write and say
- 14:54or personal, well, let me not say personal. Maybe it's personal to
- 14:58them. I feel like Isaiah Rashad is a very dope EMC. When I
- 15:07first heard this debut, you know, I was, I was excited.
- 15:11I was extra excited when he signed to TDE because I was like, Yo,
- 15:18that's where he that's where he belonged. Right, it fits, it
- 15:20makes sense, it works, But I gotta, I gotta, I gotta
- 15:26keep it a buck. Sylvia's Demo is a very dope album by Isaiah Rashad,
- 15:35and if you haven't heard it, you should check it out. It's
- 15:39it's a throwback to the times where albums were albums. They were experiences.
- 15:45They weren't a collection of singles, they were experiences, right, intro,
- 15:50interludes, things, themes tying together, you know, to make one whole
- 15:56thing just all of that good stuff right where you walk away. I like
- 16:00this cat right potent. The music is potent. Okay, the beats on
- 16:07that joint were dope. But I think the reason why most hip hop heads
- 16:14that at least those around me that I know, don't really talk about him
- 16:18like that or no of him, but you know they're kind of like that,
- 16:22it's because I don't think his TD releases ever really lived up to the
- 16:30status that Sylvia's demo set or as far as the expectations, because I know,
- 16:37for me, I was like, yes, he's on it, he
- 16:40got the debut, it's about the it's about to go down, and I
- 16:44liked it, but it just didn't feel the same, and you know what
- 16:48it felt like it don't get me wrong, his follow up, his first
- 16:53album on TV was pretty dope, right. I don't think Sylvia's demo was
- 17:00on TDE when it was released originally, so I don't know, correct me
- 17:06if I'm wrong. But follow up, well, I think it was called
- 17:11Rising Tirade or something like that. I do own it. I just hadn't
- 17:15listened to it in a while. That just forget me. I'm just gonna
- 17:18look through my less record look real quick the Sun's tirade I had it right.
- 17:26I just felt like something was missing and I liked it. But it's
- 17:30a lot like when I first heard j Cole, or when I first knew
- 17:36I really liked him, you know, versus when he signed with rock Nation
- 17:41and he had a demo, right, I mean our demo, he had
- 17:42his debut album. I felt like his mixtape run set a certain standard for
- 17:48what that debut was going to be. He was on a label that made
- 17:52sense for what I had heard on a mixtape, and the album was far
- 17:57from who I knew that that cat to be the same thing with Big Crick
- 18:03heard them mixtape joints, sign a depth gym, you like boom, he
- 18:07got money now it's like to go crazy, and it did not because something
- 18:12was missing. It is difficult for me to even describe what that is,
- 18:18but I'm going to try. I think there's something to be said in certain
- 18:25instances where you record this thing when you're hungry for that deal, when you're
- 18:33hungry for that situation and you have something to prove, and sometimes when people
- 18:42achieve that goal of landing that deal, getting that kind of respect from that
- 18:48standpoint, now they don't have the same drive, so they're kind of searching
- 18:56for that drive because the drive was to officially get stamped, and sometimes you
- 19:02gotta drop a dud or not really live up to expectations in order for that
- 19:08fire to come back. In some cases, I feel like with Big Crit
- 19:12he back now. Every after he left Death Jam, I've liked every project,
- 19:18including the EP he dropped in twenty twenty three. Late twenty twenty three
- 19:22he fell back. Same thing with Jay Cole had that first album. I'm
- 19:29like, Nah, something something ain't right. This ain't it. It's not
- 19:33the guy no, and drop Boring Center and I was like, Okay,
- 19:40I'm starting to ham him. And then he dropped his classic that I'm not
- 19:42gonna name, but y'all know what it is for those who don't know,
- 19:48twenty fourteen Forest Hill Drive. Okay, it's a classic. Stop it.
- 19:53But he's back, right, j Cole's back. The dude from the mixtape
- 19:57was back. So I I feel like with Isaiah Rashad, he hasn't gotten
- 20:03to that point yet, Like he's kind of there, but he's not.
- 20:10But maybe he evolved, but maybe he didn't necessarily have to evolve because he
- 20:15was already evolved on the debut, right, Sylvia's demo, I already felt
- 20:21like he was a mature artist, right, So I don't feel like,
- 20:23oh, he matured more with these, and you know you don't like it
- 20:26because he matured. No. I liked him because he sounded like he was
- 20:32already mature on the debut, So give me more of that. And I
- 20:36think it has more to do with the production choices than it does what he's
- 20:42doing with his pen, because I feel like his pen hasn't changed that much.
- 20:48I just feel like the production was just better on Sylvia's demo than me.
- 20:53It just it showed it was more range. I'll just say that much.
- 20:57It was more range in it, right, whereas now it feels more
- 21:02polished when it doesn't need to be polished. Sometimes it's okay to maintain a
- 21:08certain sound and stigma because it works for an artist. I always say this.
- 21:15When I first heard Wu Tang, I didn't think anything about, oh,
- 21:21this joint needs to be e cute, Oh it need to be mastered.
- 21:25Oh we needed to know it was just grimy. We in a room
- 21:30were making dope hip hop, were making gun sounds that don't even sound like
- 21:36gun sounds on who cares? This joint is crazy? Sometimes it's okay to
- 21:41just do that. That's all I'm saying, not that Isaiah Rashad needs to
- 21:45do that, because I think what he needs to do is just find that
- 21:52fire again. And I could be wrong. I mean he might be like
- 21:56what fire? I am whatever, man, But as a fan, I
- 22:00feel like it hasn't been the same since its debut. So if you haven't
- 22:04heard it and you have a streaming service or whatever, you just straight by
- 22:08music. I think if you like hip hop and you're not biased one way
- 22:12or another, you should check out Isaiah Shad's Sylvia's Demo is a tenth year
- 22:18anniversary. He also has a tour for this project and why because it's his
- 22:25best project. Of course you have an anniversary of ten years, it's his
- 22:29best joint. So we'll see what the follow up is after that. And
- 22:34lastly, if you know me, then you know that my two favorite rappers,
- 22:48as far as its just me picking too, but my two favorite rappers
- 22:52where it's like when they releasing a project, I'm in. Like, even
- 22:57if I'm not feeling the first single, two singles, I don't care.
- 23:02I'm in it's Kendrick Lamar and Benny the Butcher, and Benny the Butcher has
- 23:08been very vocal about his album leading up to its release. I think it's
- 23:15called Everybody Can't Go, which I think is a dope title because it's true
- 23:22everybody can go. But I don't think I've liked this campaign for his album.
- 23:33I don't think it's necessary. I already think you're dope. A lot
- 23:37of people already think you're dope. He originally was getting that blogs and you
- 23:45know what he says, blogs, but I don't know the blogging ever is
- 23:48over, so I guess he's talking about videos and stuff that content creators make,
- 23:55right, that's what they call, not bloggers bloggers right or type but
- 24:00that ever's done right. We know they're hip hop outlets that still do words
- 24:06like hip hop d X, but that's not the point. It's not enough
- 24:10of them to harm your legacy. But he, you know, he's had
- 24:14words for them, you know, and doesn't like critics and stuff like that.
- 24:18And I talked about my feelings on that, and I just think,
- 24:21what do you mean once you put your art out into the world, no
- 24:26matter if you're making a movie, did you drew a picture or whatever.
- 24:30It's going to get critiqued. Stop acting like it was a different world at
- 24:33some point, or a different world from where you come from for those who
- 24:38are much older. But now, like it's like a week before I think
- 24:48his album comes out, he already dropped two singles from which it wasn't it's
- 24:56not whack. It just it just wasn't capturing the feeling for me. It
- 25:03was cool. But yeah, but now he's released a third single. And
- 25:08by the way, if I hadn't mentioned, he's working with hip Boy on
- 25:11his joint, so you know, we're looking for some magic. And I
- 25:15think the third single is exactly what I wanted, right. It's a song
- 25:18called bron is straight up what you know from hip Boy and what you know
- 25:23from Benny to Butcher joined is hot. Right, Album's on the way.
- 25:29But then Benny the Butcher decided he was gonna do more talking. This is
- 25:34what he said when blogs, and I quote because they mean when blogs post
- 25:44ish like this, they'd be trying to get reaction out of y'all, and
- 25:48y'all take debate because y'all love to banter on this app talking about Twitter.
- 25:53I was speaking on creating a missing feeling in the deaf jam building. Can't
- 26:00wait to drop my ish on you nerds who are gonna hate either way.
- 26:06The Butcher coming now. He was responding to someone retweeting that quote from Benny
- 26:11to Butcher. Here's the quote from Benny to Butcher. I'm gonna have the
- 26:15best hip hop deaf jam album since DMX's debut album. The blogger or the
- 26:22tweeter in this case, whose old head energy? I think I follow him?
- 26:27I don't know. He said those are some big shoes to fill.
- 26:33What did he say that was so wrong? Benny the Butcher. DMX debut
- 26:41went platinum, then he dropped another album on Death Jam same year, in
- 26:47nineteen ninety eight, that also went platinum in the same year as his debut.
- 26:55Right, that's the difference. Tupac had two platinum marvels within this same
- 27:00year. But Tupac I've already been around for years, right, so he
- 27:03also had popularity on his side, whereas DMX had some instant popularity enough to
- 27:11drop two albums within his debut year and have them both go platinum. Benny
- 27:18de Butcher is not going to do that with one album. But that's not
- 27:25why I listen. My thing is two things. This dude didn't say nothing.
- 27:33Man, All he said is those are big that's a challenge. All
- 27:37you got to say is I'm here to meet the challenge. That's you get
- 27:41a lot more respect from that than getting sensitive and calling people nerds and trying
- 27:48to, you know, go behind their words and say, well, he's
- 27:52really trying to say, is this negative thing about me? No, those
- 27:56are big shoes to fill. Right. What DMX did is it wasn't light
- 28:02work. It wasn't It was a combination of a ton of things. Now,
- 28:07what I'll say in your Deaf Jam debut, which feels weird because I
- 28:11mean, damn, we already got a couple joints that I consider classes from
- 28:18Benny the Butcher, and now you got a debut you already debuted. The
- 28:23thing is with this is that name calling which you started. It's not gonna
- 28:36get you more fans. You need more fans to even live up to the
- 28:41quote that you just said. Now what you meant, Okay, I could
- 28:47dig it. Maybe you feel like there's a certain energy that was around that
- 28:52surrounded DMX's debut that you're gonna bring back to the deaf jam. My only
- 29:02question to you, and maybe someone told you I don't know, but you
- 29:07wasn't in the room to know what the climate was around it, you know,
- 29:11around that time with DMX being out and being as hot as he was,
- 29:15you really only know as a fan what the climate was for fans with
- 29:22DMX. So my thing is will it be that for you? Because I
- 29:27know for me, if the rest of the album is in the same lane
- 29:32as his bronze song, well it's going to be another dope project from Benning
- 29:36the Butcher. Because I will say this, I don't think the brother missed,
- 29:38so I understand the confidence. But at the end of the day,
- 29:42there's a difference between me and a bunch of dudes knowing you're dope and the
- 29:51ladies also knowing you're dope, because, believe you me, there are a
- 29:56number of ladies who don't even know who some of these cats are, but
- 29:59they knew d Max was. There's a lot of variables that go into it.
- 30:06Now again, I hate doing this, I hate saying this, but
- 30:11sometimes it's better to say as little as you can. You may feel this
- 30:17way, save it for the locker room talk. Don't tell the public because
- 30:22there's some people who won't take your comments lightly right. They'll just hate on
- 30:26everything you do for now. They'll turn up they hate. The hate that
- 30:30you say exists will be turned up, and there will be people who will
- 30:33join the hate party versus those who are like, yeah, I could dig
- 30:37it, let me see, let me listen. So I don't think this
- 30:41person was trying to get out of me. He just said those are big
- 30:45shoes to feel. And then Benny just was like, you nerds gonna hate
- 30:49anyway. And I usually like stuff like that because it's the word, right,
- 30:56Like these dudes aren't nerds, know what I'm saying. This one in
- 31:00particular, there are nerds, like he was checking. He followed you for
- 31:04a reason, dog, you like your music. So I don't know.
- 31:10I just wish some of these rappers would stop paying so much attention, stop
- 31:15being so sensitive about it that you type it, maybe tape it, you
- 31:19know, look at it for a little while, like yeah, nerds,
- 31:23and then delete it. Don't send it, don't post it, just type
- 31:27it you know it felt good, or find a better way to say it.
- 31:33Just say I think I could live up to the challenge and bounce because
- 31:37you already know. Some of them Twitter cats are gonna do nothing but run
- 31:41down and like or what do you mean? Or you can live up a
- 31:45test you can hardly man ignore them. Just do what you do, man,
- 31:51That's why that's why we liked you. Y'all was just doing what y'all
- 31:53did. But the more you set yourself up for this kind of conversation around
- 32:00your music, the vocal minority will be the loudest and it will feel like
- 32:07it's everybody, but it's not. Some of us are just like, I'm
- 32:08gonna just frestplay if it's dope. You know, I'm a rocket. You
- 32:13know it's the best of the year. I'm gonna call it that, but
- 32:15I'm gonna listen first. I'm not gonna judge it in advance like some people
- 32:21will do, or like he's implying bloggers and nerds to, because I consider
- 32:29myself a nerd. I got you know, I got lightsabers over there,
- 32:30and I'll make me use them joints, you know. Whatever. What do
- 32:36you think though? What do you think about Benny the Butcher's comments? Do
- 32:40you think you could live up to the legacy of dmxa's debut album. Leave
- 32:46your comments in a comment section below, what do you think about the other
- 32:50stories I add, you know, like, what are your thoughts. I
