- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 183! Can you believe it? Lucas: I know. We've learned so much. Today I thought we'd look at something we all have at home. Luna: Ohh, I'm curious. What is it? Lucas: Furniture! Let's learn the German words for some basic pieces. Luna: Oh, perfect. I'm still getting my apartment set up, so this is super useful. Lucas: Let's start with the table. In German, table is 'der Tisch'. Luna: Der Tisch. Lucas: Good. Der Tisch. It's masculine, so 'the' is 'der'. Der Tisch. Luna: Der Tisch. Der Tisch. Lucas: Now, 'der Stuhl' – the chair. Luna: Der Stuhl. Der Stuhl. Lucas: Perfect. So if you want to say 'the table and the chair', it's 'der Tisch und der Stuhl'. Luna: Der Tisch und der Stuhl. That's easy. Lucas: Now for something to sleep on: 'das Bett' – the bed. Luna: Das Bett. Das Bett. Neutral, right? Lucas: Exactly. 'Das Bett' is neuter. So 'the bed' is 'das Bett'. Luna: Das Bett. I like that word. It's short. Lucas: And finally, 'der Schrank' – the wardrobe or cupboard. Luna: Der Schrank. Der Schrank. That's a bit trickier. Lucas: You got it. Der Schrank. So let's put them all together in a tiny scene. Luna: A scene! I'm ready. Lucas: Imagine you walk into a room. You say: 'Da ist ein Tisch. Da ist ein Stuhl. Da ist ein Bett. Und da ist ein Schrank.' Luna: Da ist ein Tisch. Da ist ein Stuhl. Da ist ein Bett. Und da ist ein Schrank. Lucas: Wonderful. You just said 'There is a table, a chair, a bed, and a wardrobe.' Luna: Wait, 'da ist' means 'there is'? I thought it meant 'there'. Lucas: In this context, 'da ist' means 'there is'. So 'Da ist ein Tisch' – 'There is a table.' Luna: Ah, got it. So 'Da ist ein Stuhl' – 'There is a chair.' Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to say 'there are', you use 'da sind'. But for now, let's stick with 'da ist' for singular. Luna: Okay, I'll practice: Da ist ein Bett. Da ist ein Schrank. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's say you want to ask where something is. 'Wo ist der Tisch?' – 'Where is the table?' Luna: Wo ist der Tisch? Lucas: And the answer: 'Der Tisch ist im Zimmer.' – 'The table is in the room.' Luna: Der Tisch ist im Zimmer. 'Im' is short for 'in dem'? Lucas: Yes! 'Im' is 'in dem' – 'in the'. So 'im Zimmer' means 'in the room'. Luna: Der Tisch ist im Zimmer. Der Stuhl ist im Zimmer. Das Bett ist im Zimmer. Der Schrank ist im Zimmer. Lucas: You're a natural. All the furniture is in the room. Luna: I feel like I could actually describe my apartment now. Well, a little bit. Lucas: That's the idea. Start small. Now, before we go further, I want to mention something. Luna: Yeah? Lucas: If this episode is helping you build your German bit by bit, that's exactly what Fexingo is for. And we keep this show ad-free thanks to listeners who support us. Luna: Right. If you find these little lessons useful, you can help keep them going. It's buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Exactly. No pressure, but every bit helps. So, back to furniture – let's make a sentence with 'neben' – 'next to'. Luna: Ooh, prepositions. I'm ready. Lucas: Der Stuhl ist neben dem Tisch. – The chair is next to the table. Luna: Der Stuhl ist neben dem Tisch. 'Neben' takes dative? Lucas: Yes! So 'dem Tisch' instead of 'der Tisch'. Good catch. Luna: Der Stuhl ist neben dem Tisch. And what about the bed next to the wardrobe? Lucas: Das Bett ist neben dem Schrank. Luna: Das Bett ist neben dem Schrank. I love that. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. I'll say the English, you say the German. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: The table. Luna: Der Tisch. Lucas: The chair. Luna: Der Stuhl. Lucas: The bed. Luna: Das Bett. Lucas: The wardrobe. Luna: Der Schrank. Lucas: Perfect. And if you want to say 'the furniture' in general, it's 'die Möbel'. That's plural. Luna: Die Möbel. So 'Die Möbel sind im Zimmer' – 'The furniture is in the room.' Lucas: Exactly. You're already making sentences. Luna: This is fun. I think I'll practice by describing my room tonight. Lucas: Great idea. And that's all for today. We covered 'der Tisch', 'der Stuhl', 'das Bett', and 'der Schrank'. Luna: Don't forget 'die Möbel'! Lucas: Right, die Möbel. Practice these words, and next time you're in a furniture store, you'll be set. Luna: Or just at home. Thanks for listening to Learn German with Fexingo. Bis bald! Lucas: Bis bald! Practice your furniture words, and we'll see you next time.
