- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Welcome to watch your least
- 0:13favorite scary movie. The podcasts, are we talked
- 0:16about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the Absurd, and all
- 0:19our favorite and least favorite scary movies, as we believe
- 0:21every horror movie rightfully, has its fanbase, even if we
- 0:24don't always get it. My name is Travis.
- 0:27My name is Jessie and today, we are talking 2019 Midsummer when
- 0:35it's been a long time coming. We've talked about this one on
- 0:39the show. I think a couple of I'm special
- 0:41times and we're actually recording this on the first day
- 0:43of summer. Oh my God.
- 0:45Yeah, on Sunday. It's summer.
- 0:47It's beginning of summer for us. Yeah.
- 0:51But it's the middle of like meteorological summer.
- 0:56That's what they say where it's like summer for the weather but
- 1:00not summer. It is the solstice.
- 1:03Yeah. Like in in the movie would be
- 1:05happening right now. I think.
- 1:09Yeah, cuz they Leave like mid-june and they're supposed to
- 1:13come back at the end of July. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:15So yeah, it's perfect timing. We time the side just for this
- 1:18on purpose, of course. No, I literally did build this
- 1:22one schedule around having. Hey this is this week.
- 1:25Yeah. Okay.
- 1:26Well yeah, remember remember because my first draft you were
- 1:29like this is a really unbalanced schedule.
- 1:31You're like let's move Midsummer and I was like no absolutely
- 1:34not. Yeah I will move other movies
- 1:36but we're not moving. Then summer.
- 1:38All right. Cool.
- 1:38Well I'm excited to talk about this one.
- 1:41This is a movie that you and I have both.
- 1:44We both have very strong feelings towards, yes, and just
- 1:49given everybody heads up. They're both very positive, but
- 1:53we are going to bring some negative opinions in just a
- 1:56balance this episode of. But anytime we talk about, is
- 1:59overwhelmingly positive. Usually.
- 2:01Yeah. I mean, that's kind of the whole
- 2:03purpose of our movie. If if our movie of our podcast
- 2:06is that we want to understand other perspectives while also.
- 2:10So giving our perspective and I feel like there are a lot of
- 2:15movies where we can point out like, yeah, that's stupid but I
- 2:19still love it. And this is one of those movies
- 2:21that I don't think. We're gonna have any of those
- 2:23moments. So we did look up some, some
- 2:28opinions from the other side. Yeah, but I don't have any
- 2:32announcements today. None.
- 2:33None. If you want to go ahead and read
- 2:35last week's poll results. I will get right on, though.
- 2:38What was that movie last week movie was Halloween?
- 2:40Curse of Michael myers.slc, right?
- 2:42And I came up with another good pull idea.
- 2:45Yeah. Okay.
- 2:46So, as always, we try and base these poles spaced off of last
- 2:50week's movie, Jesse suggested, would you rather listen to Paul
- 2:56Rudd's? Tommy?
- 2:58Tommy Doyle, yeah? Tommy Doyle?
- 3:00Who's Tommy Wallace? I was about to say Tommy while I
- 3:03can. I caught it last episode, I
- 3:05called him. Tell me Wallace to.
- 3:06That's the guy that directed Halloween 3.
- 3:08Okay. Yeah.
- 3:10Which is weird because I would expect to get them mixed up with
- 3:13Tommy Jarvis. Yeah, but it never came up.
- 3:17No. Yeah.
- 3:18Okay. So would you rather listen to
- 3:21Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle ranting and raving on back, talk with
- 3:26Barry Simms, or would you rather be locked into Halloween, open
- 3:30mic night with Tommy Doyle as portrayed by Anthony?
- 3:36And, and Hall. Michael Hall, Denis, Michael
- 3:38Hall. I can't remember his name, for
- 3:40whatever. It's because we haven't covered
- 3:42that movie yet. It's not ingrained in my memory.
- 3:44Yeah, yeah. Because I apposite advised that
- 3:47everybody would prefer the Paul Rudd version because there's
- 3:50freedom of movement, there's consent, there's more consent
- 3:53involved. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:54Well, and that in the episode, you've laid out the scenario in
- 3:58which you're in there with Tommy and Halloween kills, and he's
- 4:01got, you walked up which he died.
- 4:04He tells everybody to sit down and shut up.
- 4:06I mean, not verbatim but I could see I'm being like that, though.
- 4:12Okay. But, but, but for this one on
- 4:19Twitter, I can go ahead and say, without even having to look
- 4:21everybody was for Paul Rhoads, version hell.
- 4:24Yeah. On Instagram.
- 4:26However, we had a little bit of variety.
- 4:31It was 89% Paul, Rudd, and Halloween, 6 and 11 percent,
- 4:35preferred Anthony. Michael Hall.
- 4:37Has interesting. Yes, so I am also like I said
- 4:43like I think Paul Rhoads was more interesting around
- 4:46necessarily like Tommy's way of doing it and how WinCo's because
- 4:52his is pretentious. He's like once upon a time and
- 4:55then the and he's like, just kidding.
- 4:57It's real stories like he's trying to do like swim poetry
- 5:00type. She like he thinks it's like
- 5:01really deep but he's just kind of up there.
- 5:05Yeah, he's full of himself, whereas Paul Rudd is like, hell
- 5:09yeah, weirdos love the Colin too.
- 5:10A radio station. What's up?
- 5:13I have trauma, Paul Rudd's, actively like peeping on his
- 5:18neighbor with a telescope. Like he's not a winner in this
- 5:21scenario either. He's also like it's a relevant
- 5:25episode 2 because they're talking about Michael Myers and
- 5:28Loomis. And yeah, that's so yesterday,
- 5:31he didn't bring the mood down that night.
- 5:33And as always, anybody can participate on Twitter and
- 5:37Instagram. WE Post those polls every
- 5:39Friday, so We're going to go ahead and plug this shit up top,
- 5:42because I have a feeling we're going to get very distracted by
- 5:44our discussion today. So if you want to participate
- 5:46and stuff like that, you want to see our schedule, you want to
- 5:49give us your reviews, all of that.
- 5:51You can find us on Facebook and find us on Instagram, least
- 5:54favorite scary movie podcast. You can find us on Twitter, at
- 5:57least fav pod, that's fav. If AV you can find us on.

- 6:05Under some username. We have a website.
- 6:07What's your least favorite scary movie.com and we haven't even
- 6:10Mail address least favorite scary movie in gmail.com.
- 6:14Yes and thank you for the reviews because we got a decent
- 6:16amount here and we have some negative reviews.
- 6:18So if you yeah you know, feel free, anybody listening.
- 6:21Soon. As your thoughts they get shared
- 6:23on the show and we really do try to like actively listen to why
- 6:27people I hope that comes across that were actually trying to
- 6:30give a voice to that. Yeah.
- 6:32So I think. Yeah.
- 6:33All right. So having said all that I think
- 6:36it's time we finally start talking about.
- 6:38Midsummer hell yeah some Summer came out in 2019 on July third
- 6:45throws most at the anniversary. What was my mind?
- 6:48That this is only three years old almost.
- 6:51It's not even three years old yet.
- 6:52Like, I feel like this movie has been out for a long time now.
- 6:55Yeah, we watch the a24 director's, cut special edition.
- 7:01It is a beautiful, beautiful, like physical item.
- 7:07It doesn't fit on our Shelf. No, it's It's got its own stand.
- 7:12It's the centerpiece on top of it is but it's got like art art
- 7:17stuff with it. Like an art book.
- 7:19That's the word. I'm trying to think of and it's
- 7:21also there's a lot of deleted scenes in there that add more
- 7:27context to some things. So, I always recommend people
- 7:31watch it because generally when I hear people asking questions,
- 7:34it's stuff that can be answered by the director's cut.
- 7:38Yeah. And Be warned though.
- 7:41It's 30 minutes more so it makes it officially a three-hour
- 7:44movie. So it does not feel like 3
- 7:46hours, it doesn't. I'm always shocked every time
- 7:49that it's been three hours that we've been watching it.
- 7:50Yeah. Because this movie moves well
- 7:52like actually has a good Pace but you will have to set aside
- 7:56that much time. Yeah, watch this but if you want
- 7:59to watch just the theatrical cut it is currently streaming on
- 8:02Prime premium Hulu premium YouTube TV premium sling TV
- 8:05premium fubo TV premium Showtime or you can rent it through
- 8:08YouTube Google play or voodoo This movie was written and
- 8:11directed by re a stir. There were a lot of people
- 8:14involved in music and special effects.
- 8:17So just go check out the IMDb page for that because it's a lot
- 8:21starring Florence. Pugh is Danny Jack Rainer is
- 8:24Christian vilhelm? Blomgren as Pelé, William
- 8:27Jackson, Harper as Josh and Will Poulter as Mark, the budget for
- 8:33this movie was 9 million dollars with a worldwide, gross of
- 8:37forty, seven point, nine million.
- 8:39I'm going to put that in budget. That's definitely budgeting not
- 8:42Buck, said I would say, yeah, if feels budget e for me, it's
- 8:46currently got a 7.1 on IMDb and wanted to get those ratings to
- 8:50to compare to the next two movies but also came out in
- 8:532019, okay? These are movies that you and I
- 8:55have both seen one of them. We saw in theaters and the other
- 8:59one, we Played a drinking game two in our old apartment who.
- 9:06Okay, which one. So the first one is us which
- 9:09came out in March 22nd, 2019. Okay, that one is firmly budget
- 9:14of 20 million dollars. I mean they're throwing money at
- 9:17Jordan pill at that point. Well and it makes sense because
- 9:19it also got a worldwide gross of 255 million.
- 9:22Yeah. So double the budget and almost
- 9:27five times the gross, but it only has a six point eight on
- 9:31IMDb. Is when, when you think about
- 9:34it, it's not as good as get out, but it's a decently solid movie,
- 9:38still, and then the other movie that came out.
- 9:41August 16th, 2019 is 47 meters down uncage.
- 9:47All right? This one I will always maintain
- 9:51is better than the first one if not for the fact that there's
- 9:54the one ridiculous girl, who's fucking selfish.
- 9:57And it's hilarious to watch which one has Sylvester
- 10:00Sylvester, Stallone's daughter. The uncaged the sequel.
- 10:04Yes. Okay, cool.
- 10:05Yes, that's the one to watch. Definitely.
- 10:07Yeah. You and you don't have to see
- 10:08the first one to watch this. It's great.
- 10:10My only gripe with it is that it's not called 48 meters down.
- 10:16Just like move it up when we did.
- 10:18I just see if I can get a little bit deeper like that idea.
- 10:22What? That's great.
- 10:25That actually was budget. Also 12 million dollars, I can
- 10:29see that I think Amazon actually Used that one released
- 10:33distributed. It, it had a worldwide gross of
- 10:36forty seven point five million. So just a little under what
- 10:40Midsummer brought in with a slightly higher budget, and it's
- 10:44got an IMDb score, 5.0. It sounds about right.
- 10:47People cannot have the same refined tastes less.
- 10:49It's not like great Cinema, but it's not have to cover it now.
- 10:54I'm absolutely down. I think that that would be a fun
- 10:56one to talk about. Okay.
- 10:59Do you want to know the tagline for this?
- 11:02Is there only one? Yes.
- 11:04Yeah. What is according to IMDb let
- 11:07the festivities begin? I like it.
- 11:10I think that's actually good. I don't know.
- 11:16I don't know if I have a better one for it.
- 11:18I my brain just immediately goes to let those 74th Annual Hunger
- 11:24Games begin. No?
- 11:26Really? Yeah.
- 11:27I don't have that. Yeah.
- 11:28Fine, sir to me, I think it works pretty well.
- 11:33Well, I've got some interesting information from an interview
- 11:38with Alyssa Wilkerson for vox.com.
- 11:41I'm not going to read a bunch of fun facts for this movie, their
- 11:45stuff. Like I can sprinkle and along
- 11:46the way instead, what I'm going to do is I'm going to link this
- 11:48interview in our show notes, okay?
- 11:51I'm going to link the midsummer subreddit in our show notes
- 11:54because there's a lot of information that people have
- 11:57their a lot of cool observation. And somebody did meet the horta
- 12:00that it'll whole series of introducing all of the different
- 12:03horta community members. Okay.
- 12:07Yeah. And like they've just done so
- 12:09much more work and I just, I think it's fascinating to read
- 12:12through and I'm also going to link Tumblr page a Blog.
- 12:18It's the Danny and Pele receipts.
- 12:20That's a really good one. I remember you showing that to
- 12:22me and it's an interesting read. Yeah.
- 12:24And I don't necessarily know how much like I buy into there.
- 12:29The the hype they have for it but it brings up a lot of really
- 12:33interesting perspectives and re ouster is a very intentional
- 12:37director so I think all of the observations they make are
- 12:41important even if you don't necessarily buy into like the
- 12:44shipping of Danny and Pele. Yeah but I did want to highlight
- 12:49a couple of interesting lines from this interview because did
- 12:56they address what I have heard is some of the criticism that
- 13:02people have for this movie, In that it's predictable.
- 13:07And what he says is that it goes exactly where you're expecting,
- 13:10but the surprise is how it feels to get there.
- 13:14That is something that I feel I said before on the show that I
- 13:19don't necessarily care if a movie is predictable, as long as
- 13:22I enjoy the ride to get there, I don't think everything has to be
- 13:26a Twist. Yeah, and I mean I don't I just
- 13:32doesn't really feel like it needs that with this story,
- 13:35like, I feel like the ride is what's enjoyable?
- 13:38Like, it's not like it's not slapping you in the face with
- 13:41what's going to happen either. Like it's all like pretty
- 13:43interesting to see. It develop.
- 13:45Yeah, if nothing we said it last week when we're One of what is
- 13:52the word? I'm trying to think of when we
- 13:53were not plotting it, no previewing know.
- 14:01I can't think of the word but we're talking about it.
- 14:04It's a visually stunning movie, if nothing else like, it's very
- 14:07visually beautiful. He also says that he doesn't see
- 14:13the Harga as a cult, they're not necessarily meant to be
- 14:16foreboding. They believe in what they do.
- 14:19They're not plotting their more of a community.
- 14:21Yeah. So I find that interesting
- 14:23because they definitely use Colt tactics to draw in members.
- 14:29We see, that was Danny, especially where she Is
- 14:32vulnerable, she's vulnerable, they love bomb her.
- 14:35They put her in a position where she has to make this decision.
- 14:37That kind of pulls her into their Community.
- 14:41Yeah. So they definitely have all the
- 14:44Hallmarks of a cold but that's not what he was going into while
- 14:48he was making it. He's a very big folk or fan and
- 14:53a lot of people have apparently asked him like, you know, if he
- 14:55was trying to reference a bunch of Hulk or and he was like, it's
- 14:58not necessarily that I had been like watching and researching
- 15:00this stuff. It's just just in my bones like
- 15:03it's what I love in horror and he tried to follow a lot of
- 15:07those same. Like he doesn't really try to
- 15:10follow a lot of those same beats.
- 15:11He just kind of did when he was making this for.
- 15:14Yeah I can see that. Let me see.
- 15:17I think this is the quota have pulled up.
- 15:21I don't really care about managing expectations.
- 15:23People can react however they like this is in response to
- 15:26people not liking the storyline and Being kind of upset that
- 15:32it's different from hereditary. I think it's better to enter the
- 15:36film without any knowledge, but it's a movie that is adhering to
- 15:39the laws of a certain sub genre folk or but with the logic of a
- 15:42different genre, a fairy tale how do you turn a folk horror
- 15:46film into a fairy tale? Well you have tourists visiting
- 15:49a pagan Community, they are inevitably going to be killed
- 15:52off. If the film is going to be
- 15:53satisfying to the people who are going there for that movie.
- 15:58And then Allison Wilkinson says, these audiences are coming to
- 16:00see people die to a cherry res response.
- 16:04Exactly. But my attitude is okay, so we
- 16:06know that they're gonna die. So that's the least.
- 16:09Interesting thing about this movie, you know, she points out.
- 16:11Okay. So you heal a lot of them off
- 16:13screen and he said it happens all scream because I already
- 16:15know that, you know, I'll give you a little bit of that but
- 16:17otherwise, that's not what's going to make this film?
- 16:20Interesting. Yeah, that's true.
- 16:22Like, I mean, this, this isn't that type of film like I think
- 16:26it is kind of creepy. Like as the film progresses, one
- 16:29of the characters disappear and you honestly have no idea what's
- 16:32happening like they're just gone and that's another criticism
- 16:37that I've heard of the film. Is that people feel like it's
- 16:39not necessarily scary. You don't see anything happening
- 16:41off-screen and you know that these people are going to die
- 16:44but that's kind of what he's trying to do with it.
- 16:47So if you're a person that you want to be surprised and you
- 16:51want to see all of the kills on screen, this just really isn't
- 16:55going to be a movie for you. Normally, I side with people
- 16:57that That want to see all the girls on screen, but I think
- 17:00that there are reasons to not do so like what he said here, like
- 17:05that makes sense. And honestly, I think it does
- 17:08make it like a stronger film and a lot of it.
- 17:11You are supposed to be drawn to Danny's Story.
- 17:14You're supposed to, I mean, obviously, it's not fully from
- 17:17her perspective, but you stay with her for a lot of the movie.
- 17:21And that's another thing that he talks about with us with The
- 17:24Break-Up being such a, the dissolution of relationship.
- 17:27Such a central theme to the movie.
- 17:29Is that he imagines? Everybody can understand it from
- 17:35both sides from being in a relationship with somebody who's
- 17:38not putting in as much as you are and you're reaching out
- 17:41trying to get that commitment that love that person closeness
- 17:50and from the other person. But then from the other side of
- 17:53things where you're in a relationship and you don't know
- 17:55how to pull back you don't know what to do.
- 17:57You don't Not know how to end things yourself.
- 17:59Yeah. But at this point, for this
- 18:02movie, he wants you to be on Danny side and he even says that
- 18:07Christian is the villain of this movie.
- 18:10And so all you people out there, defending Christian.
- 18:14The director says, he's the villain of the movie.
- 18:17He does say he's pretty banal Dylan.
- 18:19I mean, you can still feel sorry for him to.
- 18:23I'm he has a pretty fucked up. Faith himself, like I still have
- 18:26sympathy for his care. Definitely, but he is like an
- 18:30asshole and I can definitely see him being like a villain.
- 18:34Yeah. And this, another quote, I
- 18:36pulled about this was so, hopefully you go in thinking
- 18:39that, the her go will be the villains, then you realize it
- 18:41was Christian all along because we're with Danny.
- 18:45And he said, ultimately he wants it to be confusing to people, he
- 18:48wants people to be unsure, what's happening?
- 18:50So I think these are all really interesting takes on the movie.
- 18:54They mirror a lot of what I love about it and I didn't read this
- 18:57interview until this weekend. So none of this was has impacted
- 19:02my love for the movie up until this point.
- 19:04It really just kind of I don't know.
- 19:07I feel like I get like ass-kissing points for
- 19:10understanding what he was going for with a lot of it.
- 19:12I think I'm going to give you props for it has pretty cool.
- 19:15I had not heard him. I heard that interview from him
- 19:17before about this. Yeah.
- 19:18It's a it's a it's a really interesting interview.
- 19:21And like I said, I'm going to link a bunch of stuff in the
- 19:23show notes for this, just because this is a movie, that's
- 19:28Been really impactful for me. So do you want to share your
- 19:32thoughts? Yeah, I'll go ahead and start.
- 19:34Okay, so I remember being super hyped for this movie because the
- 19:39year before that we watched hereditary and holy fucking
- 19:42shit. That is one of my all-time
- 19:45favorite movies is amazing, I was on board for anything that
- 19:48this guy had to do or anything. He wants to do, like, I'm going
- 19:52to fully support it. I'm going to watch it because I
- 19:54just think that he is amazing director.
- 19:56He's got Really interesting stories to tell so far.
- 20:00So yeah, we were in a really beautiful era of directors that
- 20:03we were just trusting with our whole lives.
- 20:05Yes, we had him, we had Robert Eggers and we had Sean burn and
- 20:10literally anything those guys make I'ma watch it because they
- 20:13haven't let me down so far haven't seen the northmen yet.
- 20:15No we need to watch that but and yeah those guys right there and
- 20:18even though I am notorious for shooting on the which I still
- 20:22think that is an important movie like it may not be for me but I
- 20:26understand what it did for the Genre its, you know, it has its
- 20:30place but going on like the bow Midsummer I just it's such a
- 20:36beautiful movie and people talk about it all the time, but you
- 20:39know, it's true like just the fact that this all takes place
- 20:42in daytime, and it's so colorful, like, just visually
- 20:45it's nice having like, a visually, like, Pleasant movie
- 20:48to watch and the story really, isn't that, like, it's nothing
- 20:55special. Like, you know, if you're just
- 20:58Apart to its core what it is but it's just an interesting fun
- 21:03ride and I feel like it's perfectly cast like everybody
- 21:07plays their part super well. Like, I feel like anybody can
- 21:12like insert themselves in that friend group and you all know
- 21:15somebody that can like fill in that role.
- 21:19Like I can like perfectly pick out in my friend group who any
- 21:22person I can just put, I mean it's just kind of cool like you
- 21:26know it's a super relatable movie.
- 21:28It just handles its subjects so well and I just I don't know.
- 21:33I think it's really creepy. Like it's not like overly gonna
- 21:37scare me. So does that mean you're a
- 21:38Christian? Because I don't like that.
- 21:41Whoa, I'm talking about, I don't know who Christian is.
- 21:44I don't want to be, I don't want to be on record saying that I'm
- 21:47Christian because that's not a good thing.
- 21:49We do have a friend, who is a dead ringer for Jack reynor
- 21:53though and you look, so when we were watching the movie, it was
- 21:56like one of those we leave. Every theater we get in the car
- 22:00and it's like quiet for about five minutes and then like
- 22:03finally one of us was like so Christian looks exactly like CJ,
- 22:07right? Yeah.
- 22:09It's kind of crazy actually how much he looks like him but I
- 22:14never really watched the movie and think I'm wrong about it.
- 22:17No I just don't think it's more and more CJ.
- 22:20Every single time I'm like, goddamn, did he actually go away
- 22:23somewhere in 2019, but this movie isn't out.
- 22:28Outright like scary. And anyway, I like there's no
- 22:32scare moments or anything. It's just more unnerving and
- 22:35unsettling just seeing how these people operate seeing the
- 22:38beginning, things about like Dani and her trauma.
- 22:41Like it's all like very emotionally draining and kind of
- 22:44like a rather Terry where I caress Harry did have its scary
- 22:47moments, but like the majority of it was like emotional like
- 22:51just emotional type of movie. So I mean it's kind of the same
- 22:55thing with this one, maybe to a lesser degree, but It's like a
- 22:59different. Be like this is more
- 23:00relationship. The other one was family.
- 23:02Yeah, and it's just really well done.
- 23:05So obviously 10 out of 10, For Me.
- 23:08OK, I've obviously a 10 out of 10.
- 23:12I'll just go ahead and get that out of the way since it's not
- 23:14going to be a surprise to anybody.
- 23:16I I guess it depends on what you want from horror.
- 23:23If you're going to consider if this is a horror movie or not, I
- 23:27firmly feel it as horror. For one full quarter and
- 23:31psychological horror are two sub genres.
- 23:34Yes and I think this meets both of those and I hear people make
- 23:42the argument about this movie that it's disturbing and it's
- 23:45unsettling, but it's not scary. And I always want to follow it
- 23:50up with. Well, what is scary to you then?
- 23:53Because I think everybody's got different things that are scary,
- 23:57like for Zoe. It's a closed door.
- 24:00Yes. So you all can definitely hear
- 24:02something. She says, meow and like a
- 24:03fucking line over there. I think she has discovered that
- 24:07she gets picked up on her mics and she likes the power.
- 24:11Here. But yeah, it really comes down
- 24:14to what you find scary. And there are a lot of elements
- 24:19of this story that hit really, really hard for me, you know,
- 24:25having a long experience with mental illness.
- 24:29One of the scariest things I can imagine is what Danny goes
- 24:33through at the beginning of the movie.
- 24:34Yeah, that's terrifying. Like that right.
- 24:36There is like it sets the tone for the movie and it's harsh.
- 24:40Yeah. And you know, I have been in
- 24:46situations that have made me have to confront that before and
- 24:49it's that kind of scary that just feels very surreal and I've
- 24:55also, Been privy to like narcissistic abuse, which I
- 25:02think we get some of that with Christian.
- 25:04Yeah. It.
- 25:08So these are very like real elements in life that are scary
- 25:10to me. And yeah, it's disturbing, but I
- 25:16think it's disturbing in a way that's scary.
- 25:19You know, I let's take another example of disturbing but not
- 25:22necessarily scary. Blood sucking freaks.
- 25:27Yeah. Like, that movie is disturbing.
- 25:29I feel very uncomfortable when I watch it.
- 25:31I don't know that. I necessarily think it's scary.
- 25:33No, it's not scary. Yeah, it's definitely a
- 25:35disturbing in the treatment of all the people.
- 25:38Yes. Yeah.
- 25:39It is disturbingly violent and Dick and a bunch of other is
- 25:46sticks. You know, I do I find it scary.
- 25:52I don't know because it feels so far-fetched.
- 25:55Whereas the things that Danny goes through, our realistic
- 26:00Colts really exist. I'm just going to throw that out
- 26:04there. Now they are like, they believe
- 26:08in white supremacy. It's a thing.
- 26:10It? Yeah, that is something.
- 26:12Not overt. Yeah it's a lot clearer and the
- 26:16director's cut. If I'd only seen the theatrical
- 26:18cut, if you only see the theatrical cut, it doesn't
- 26:22always click right away. Yeah, this is one where I like
- 26:26this, watch through. I did pay more attention and I
- 26:28definitely did pick up on those cues.
- 26:29Yes. You pick up on it a lot more and
- 26:32that's one of those things that we're trying to like unlearn in
- 26:35ourselves. Like not take for granted when a
- 26:39cast you know is generally only representative People that look
- 26:43like us. Yeah, but this it it is a lot
- 26:47more. I mean, it's still kind of
- 26:50settle in the director's cut but there's like some obvious
- 26:53moments in there that you can't ignore it.
- 26:55I mean, they never outright say and they never like straight-up
- 26:58make it obvious but they did you there?
- 27:00Yeah, they lay it out there, just not.
- 27:03So like in your face. Yeah.
- 27:05And which I'm gonna I'm gonna fact-check myself and cut this
- 27:09if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure Ari Aster is Jewish or It has
- 27:13Jewish Heritage so you know, yeah, well that would Nazism is
- 27:17also, you know, you know, an important thing to yes, talk
- 27:21about for him. Yes.
- 27:24So I just, I think it's a really well done movie that talks to a
- 27:28lot of deep-rooted psychological fears.
- 27:33That a lot of people have experienced and the way re a
- 27:37certain both Midsummer in hereditary addresses.
- 27:42Grief loss, mental illness. He addresses it in ways that I
- 27:52have seen very few filmmakers do as elegantly.
- 27:57He captures so much of this. So well, it's this thing.
- 28:02Yeah, and also like props to the dude for having a three-hour
- 28:06movie were about two and a half of them, the characters are on
- 28:09drugs and it's not a fucking cliche.
- 28:12Yeah. Like, you know, that they're
- 28:15tripping the whole time, but it's not so much in your face
- 28:17until right at the end. Yeah.
- 28:19And I appreciate that because it's so easy to go overboard.
- 28:22It doesn't feel It's authentic. Yeah it feels authentic.
- 28:27Yeah. Okay.
- 28:28So those are my pretty thoughts and discussions.
- 28:32Okay. So we're at a 10.
- 28:34Yeah, we're out of 10. We're here, but the top up at
- 28:39the top will be hard for us to get knocked down after this
- 28:42discussion. I think.
- 28:43Yeah, I seriously like spoiler for ourselves as well, but I
- 28:48don't see us. I don't see.
- 28:50Ours are reading lowering, but we will go ahead and go into our
- 28:55We might not focus on details quite as much as normal just
- 28:59because we don't want everybody sitting here for three hour
- 29:02podcast. Yes, it's a long-ass baby so we
- 29:04can condense certain things. Like there's a lot of this movie
- 29:08is like a lot of nothing happening to it but there's so
- 29:10much the imagery and all the shots.
- 29:12Because another part of the reason that I'm putting the
- 29:14supplemental viewing in our show notes that way everybody can
- 29:19appreciate all of the details that are there.
- 29:21Yeah, good call. So okay.
- 29:23All right, we start off with a tapestry that shows us exactly
- 29:26how the movies going to fucking go the in, it's all there.
- 29:30That's it. That's the end of the episode.
- 29:31All right, thanks guys. Next week, it is really
- 29:34interesting to just like outright laid out and the, the
- 29:38are in this movie is amazing. Like the version of the movie
- 29:42that we have the art book that it comes with.
- 29:44They has like a bunch of that stuff just in there.
- 29:46Like it's really just nice to look through.
- 29:48Like, I don't know. I just love this style of, it's
- 29:51all like water painted stuff. Yeah, or water colored really
- 29:54nice. Yeah, and it's one of those that
- 29:56like, I know these tapestries tell the story.
- 29:58So I try and pay attention to different part of it.
- 30:00Every time we watch, interesting.
- 30:02So we start off with snow and these creepy vocals.
- 30:07It's dark, it's cold, it's sad. Like, the tone is just right
- 30:09there from the beginning. It's not.
- 30:11Midsummer, it is not. Midsummer it is the winter
- 30:14solstice approximately? I don't know necessarily what
- 30:18the data's we hear a phone ringing inside of a house and a
- 30:22voicemail being left. Danny is tiling.
- 30:25In her parents that she got a scary email from her sister
- 30:27Terry and she's like I don't know.
- 30:29Did you go up a fight? Is something going on?
- 30:32Just wanted to check in, you know, you guys can call me if
- 30:35you need anything. Which I feel like that's kind of
- 30:37heartbreaking because I feel like she's probably always been
- 30:40the one to kind of try and hold everybody together.
- 30:42Yeah we see her laptop and she's got an email and says I can't
- 30:46anymore. Everything was black.
- 30:48Mom and Dad are coming too goodbye.
- 30:50That's dark that's dark. Yeah, that's fucking dark in
- 30:54her. Sir we find out how history of
- 30:57bipolar disorder and so she's you know, she's having an
- 31:01episode most likely. Yeah.
- 31:03And Danny is rightfully alarmed and she we see that she has
- 31:09emailed her back several times. Like Danny has attempted to
- 31:13contact Terry and Terry has not responded to any of the emails
- 31:17and she's understandably upset. So she calls Christian.
- 31:21Oh, and also knows like whenever she brings up the phone to call
- 31:23Christian like you can see Her a list.
- 31:25Like she's try back just a minute ago.
- 31:26She's tried calling her sisters. She just can't.
- 31:29She's just like keeps trying to get in touch.
- 31:32Yeah. And she doesn't lead with that
- 31:37and she's like, I just wanted to see if you still want to hang
- 31:39out tonight and he was like, oh, where we going to do that and
- 31:42she goes, well, you did mention, you know, maybe coming by later,
- 31:45whatever. And he was like, yo, I don't
- 31:46know. We'll see, he's kind of
- 31:48wishy-washy about it. It's very interesting watching
- 31:51this movie because the longer the movie goes on to Are you
- 31:55realize they've been together? Because when you first start it
- 31:58you're like oh well this seems like a new relationship doesn't.
- 32:02Then you're too right here. Yeah.
- 32:05Like so this phone call right here sounds like you know, maybe
- 32:09a few months. Yeah.
- 32:10You know he asked how the sisters situation is she's like,
- 32:13you know, I still haven't heard back, I'm just kind of freaked
- 32:15out and he's like Well, she does this to you every time, you
- 32:19know, she puts up some flag and you come running and she's like,
- 32:23well she has bipolar I have to kind of take that seriously, you
- 32:27know. Which yeah.
- 32:29Like yeah, but you sponsors like well you just you keep letting
- 32:34her do this and she always says a student.
- 32:35She always takes advantage of you.
- 32:36You need to just stop and then he like you get super
- 32:39inconsiderate about it. Like he's just he's just he's
- 32:42annoyed that he has to provide her Comfort.
- 32:44Yeah and he just wants to get off the phone.
- 32:47You can tell in his voice like he's just is done with the
- 32:50conversation, so she apologizes. Yep.
- 32:53And then they hang up and then we cut to Christian, he's at a
- 32:58bar restaurant or whatever. What?
- 32:59Looks like a like a pizza. That's what I was thinking.
- 33:04Might type place that you go to, you know, college town.
- 33:06Yeah, exactly. And they're all out there like
- 33:09he's with his group of friends. Yeah, they're drinking him.
- 33:11And Mark had just smoked some resin as we find out and Mark
- 33:15like I feel like this is a nice touch Much too.
- 33:17Because when we started the scene where in Danny's apartment
- 33:20and we hear in the background, we're going.
- 33:21Hi Danny, hi Danny. Hi Danny.
- 33:23You know, she says, hi back. So you kind of feel like maybe
- 33:26if she's friends with his friends and then as soon as it
- 33:28cuts to them at the diner, he was like why haven't you broken
- 33:31up with her yet? You can?
- 33:33I mean that's like a very much passive-aggressive thing like hi
- 33:36Danny. Hi Danny.
- 33:37Hi. Danny like it's kind of like him
- 33:39giving it back to her because she just keeps calling for
- 33:41Action. I don't know.
- 33:42I didn't take it that way. I say I do stuff like that too.
- 33:45When I'm around, like, if If I'm at my sister's house and her
- 33:48husband calls me like, I Justin, but you like Justin, like he
- 33:52doesn't like Danny. I get that.
- 33:55Like, I get that energy from him here, like he's doing it.
- 33:57Like he's like, I don't know. I get the impression that he's
- 34:01doing it because he's annoyed but he's like it's like that
- 34:03fake. Nice and swear, you know, he's
- 34:06pretending to be nice but like it's very thinly.
- 34:09Veiled, like you can tell that he actually is annoyed, but he's
- 34:12basically trying to convince Christian to break up with her
- 34:16attorney says you. Wanting to break up with her for
- 34:18a year. Yes.
- 34:18So then you're sitting here going, okay?
- 34:20Maybe then been together for a little over a year.
- 34:22Yeah. You know, like it doesn't feel
- 34:25like it's that old of a relationship but you know, their
- 34:28grad students so things can be a little bit more loosey-goosey.
- 34:32Not necessarily living together at this point.
- 34:34So, it is what it is. They talk about their trip to
- 34:38Sweden. We see Danny back at her
- 34:43apartment, she calls another friend and she's got it.
- 34:47So sad again. She's like, I can't, I feel like
- 34:49I'm pushing him away. I'm always leaning on him and
- 34:52her friend was like, well, yeah. Who's your boyfriend?
- 34:56That's what he's there for. Like, you should be able to lean
- 34:59on your boyfriend. She's like, but I've never even
- 35:01seen him cry and her friends, like, yeah, because he fucking
- 35:04sucks. He's a sociopath.
- 35:06He probably never has cry. Yeah, I think I mean, she's just
- 35:09concerned because Like she comes to him with the her emotional
- 35:13issues so much and that can be overwhelming.
- 35:17It can be like, I also like you mean that's kind of your that's
- 35:22kind of what you're there for in a relationship, you know.
- 35:24Yeah, you have to be able to provide that and she seems Self
- 35:29aware of how much emotional support she's asking for him to
- 35:33the point of her own self detriment.
- 35:35Yeah, so I doubt she's like overburdening him except for the
- 35:40fact that like he just doesn't want to be in a relationship
- 35:43where he has to be emotionally supportive of somebody else.
- 35:45Yeah. Which is a him issue that he
- 35:48needs to sort out? Yeah I mean I think they could
- 35:51both breakup and it would be for the best right here honestly.
- 35:54For both of them. Yes.
- 35:56Except Danny gets Call from an unknown number.
- 36:00And you know, we don't hear the phone call but we can pretty
- 36:05much guess what it is because we cut back to Christian at the
- 36:08restaurant and he gets another phone call and Margo's like
- 36:12really Jesus again blah blah blah blah because emotional
- 36:15abuse. Yeah which know yeah and when he
- 36:19answers the phone you just hear Danny screaming and crying and
- 36:23saying no no. Oh God.
- 36:24No. I also like how Josh like Josh
- 36:27is fed up with With Christian, from the very beginning of this
- 36:30movie, because he's just straight up says, never think
- 36:33that you're just drawing this relationship drum out because
- 36:36you don't want to confront the whole issue of your thesis and
- 36:39he's like, what the fuck is that supposed to mean?
- 36:41Josh, I'm Josh from the beginning is so hard about his.
- 36:45These are the two sides of William Jackson Harper.
- 36:48So we've got Josh but then we've got chiti.
- 36:52So Josh is a cheetah didn't study ethics.
- 36:55Yeah, anthropology. So true.
- 37:00It's, that's him. Yeah, he's not studying ethics,
- 37:03he's allowed to be as much of a logical.
- 37:06Cold-hearted dick. Is he wants to be?
- 37:07Yeah, this man does not seem to care about another human being
- 37:10in the entire world. He was anthropology heal, our
- 37:14anthropology to the point where he was completely disconnected
- 37:17from how to have an actual human conversation.
- 37:19How does he even have friends? Honestly, like, he doesn't have
- 37:22a conversation outside of that. I don't think I'm thinking talks
- 37:25once in this movie about anything, Not about his thesis
- 37:30or Midsummer or his. No, no, just anthropology in
- 37:34general. Well, I can tell you, he is
- 37:36friends with Christian because Christian is like, depending on
- 37:39him to graduate. He's yeah.
- 37:42He's right in jstor and told Josh showed him how and he's a
- 37:46fucking grad student. Yes they are all grad students
- 37:49in the anthropology program. We should mention.
- 37:52Yep. They're working on their phds
- 37:54and the whole reason they're going to Sweden is because
- 37:57they're going through. Out Europe to study to observe
- 38:01Midsummer Traditions. It was Josh's plan for his
- 38:05thesis and everybody else kind of tagging along.
- 38:07Yeah. Just for like a free vacation.
- 38:08Yeah it's paley's Village. Yeah and we know that Christian
- 38:12it's hammered in very heavily that Christian does not know
- 38:17what his thesis is going to be. We learned very quickly that
- 38:21Christian just kind of wishy-washy guy.
- 38:23Yeah you can't commit to anything.
- 38:25Yeah. So he gets his phone call from
- 38:27Danny and then Then. We see him walking to her
- 38:34apartment. And then we get this, like,
- 38:36fucking terrifying sequence of the fire department at the Artur
- 38:39household and we find out that I'm not going to go into the
- 38:44details of it because it's just, it's horrific.
- 38:46But Dan it's a murder-suicide. Yeah.
- 38:49Terry has killed herself and her parents.
- 38:51Yeah. Leaving Danny alone basically.
- 38:56Yeah and all she has this Christian God forbid.
- 38:59Yeah. And Christian for all of his
- 39:04lack of emotional. Emotional, culpability does
- 39:08realize that it would be a dick move to break up with her now.
- 39:12Yeah, that's where he draws one right there, like the family's
- 39:16all dead. Okay, fine.
- 39:18I guess I'll come over to your place.
- 39:19And here's the thing like that moment where he like realizes
- 39:23that I hate to use the word trapped, but from his
- 39:27perspective, that's kind of how he's saying is he can't forget
- 39:30our relationship. Yeah, it's a bad time.
- 39:33They like end it right there, but at the same time, if he had
- 39:37broken up with her at a point when he realized that they
- 39:40weren't compatible, we wouldn't be in this situation, give us
- 39:44some time. But I will say that this scene
- 39:47right here, you can, like, when he's out on the sidewalk and
- 39:49he's walking up to the building and you can hear Danny crying
- 39:52from the streets. That is like a time where I feel
- 39:56dread for him because he has to walk into that situation.
- 39:59I feel for Danny to because that is a whore for, like horrible,
- 40:03horrible scenario, Bo I just having to be that person to like
- 40:09help somebody during that. Like, I don't wish any.
- 40:13I don't want to be anybody in that scenario.
- 40:15That's just tough for all parties.
- 40:17I do find it a little bit odd, though.
- 40:18That Christian seems completely unaffected again.
- 40:22This is another reason that you might I think that the
- 40:24relationship is newer because it seems like he's got no
- 40:27connection. You don't think he's exactly
- 40:30like I can sense The Dread in his face.
- 40:32I see the dread and him not wanting to take care of Danny
- 40:36and CI. I mean more like because spoiler
- 40:40he's been with Danny for four years.
- 40:43Yeah, at this point, he has to have met her family.
- 40:48That's true. Yeah, and you would think he
- 40:49would be at least somewhat affected by them all die.
- 40:52Like, and I don't know, maybe it's just me, but even, you
- 40:56know, if I wasn't affected by losing people, that I know, I
- 41:00would be affected by the grief that somebody I am supposed to
- 41:03love is going through. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:06And he's just like, awkwardly, like, There there buddy.
- 41:13It's like a wedding or crying out like a baby basically.
- 41:15Yeah, but you his body language is very much like I do not want
- 41:19to be here. Yeah.
- 41:20But I think he's scared to like that's a scary situation for
- 41:23him. And that's another big moment
- 41:25right there, where like like he is, he's doing the right thing
- 41:31by being there, but like, he's not like, you can also like
- 41:33doing it half-hearted. Yeah.
- 41:35But then you can also kind of like Phil for him to, for having
- 41:37to do that. I do.
- 41:39Yeah. Yeah, he's not a good guy, he's
- 41:41still sucks. He's not just saying my
- 41:43sympathy. If I have to divide it between
- 41:45the two of them like, oh, yeah, thanks finally Danny.
- 41:48Yeah, I won't mean, obviously Danny.
- 41:50I'm trying to like provide, like a yeah side for somebody that,
- 41:53you know, probably doesn't get really discuss in this scenario
- 41:56very much. But anyways, so that's happened.
- 42:00Now, we get a title card. Yes, we get a title card.
- 42:02And what I assume is a Time skip, because we are now like,
- 42:06in June, yes, it looks nicer out.
- 42:09And then we find out because Christian says he's gonna go to
- 42:12a party for 45 minutes. First of all, who goes to a
- 42:15party for 45 minutes. Second of all he doesn't seem
- 42:17like the type of guy that's like honest about it.
- 42:19No, he that's he's trying to get away from her.
- 42:21Yeah. Actually and she's like no I'll
- 42:23come with you but while they're there you can see like she's
- 42:27kind of just tuned in everything out.
- 42:29And she turns back in when she hears going to Sweden and she
- 42:33learns that. Yeah, their plan is they're
- 42:35going to be leaving for Sweden in two weeks and they're going
- 42:38to be there until the end of July.
- 42:39Why. And she has a very mature
- 42:43conversation with him about it. Yeah.
- 42:47Whatever they get home. Yeah, she's not accusatory.
- 42:49She doesn't make a scene in the party.
- 42:51She doesn't make a scene in the cab.
- 42:54They're just, it's a show that because it's like that awkward
- 42:58silence. We're like, oh, okay, that's
- 43:00like the tension there is so fucking Tim.
- 43:02Yeah, you know, that the cab driver was dying to know what
- 43:06happened after they got out of the cab.
- 43:08But he's also Very grateful that if it's like a dragon.
- 43:12Maybe he messages like hey, y'all what happened?
- 43:14Yeah, okay. Yeah.
- 43:17And she was like, Hey, so you know, that's a little bit weird
- 43:21that you didn't tell me. You were planning this big trip
- 43:24and he's like, why are you talking about this?
- 43:26I just decided today, you know that I'm wanting to work on my
- 43:29thesis and she's like, just like I just want to know, like I just
- 43:33find it weird, you didn't tell me like you didn't.
- 43:35She's like, I don't even need permisson, it's not like that.
- 43:39I just Just it's weird. You didn't let me do it.
- 43:42I guess it's going to go to Sweden like in two weeks and not
- 43:45even mention it. You're just going to be gone
- 43:46suddenly. Yeah and it turns into this
- 43:49whole thing where he like he gets so defensive about it that
- 43:53by the end of the conversation Danny's apologizing to him
- 43:56because he's threatening to leave and she's afraid of being
- 43:59alone right now. So she needs him.
- 44:00So she apologizes she apologizes and dress like have a
- 44:04conversation. Psycho is this could be good for
- 44:06your thesis right? And then he like, I think he
- 44:09gets even more I heard about that and then he has the
- 44:11audacity. I think this is only a
- 44:13directors. Yeah, sure thing.
- 44:15He's like well, I wasn't surprised, but I was gonna
- 44:18invite you to come along with. I was gonna make it romantic.
- 44:21Yeah. Oh my, you can see the bullshit
- 44:23in his face. So I feel so bad for her that
- 44:25she has to. Like, this is her guy.
- 44:27This is her Rock right now. He's at Pebble.
- 44:32He sucks like he. I just feel bad for her.
- 44:35But yeah. So that's why whenever we Cut to
- 44:39the next scene. It's him.
- 44:41He's there with Mark and Pele and Josh.
- 44:44He runs into this apartment and like did he leave Danny down in
- 44:49the lobby? Like, did he close the elevator
- 44:52on her leg? Looks like he's like, he's like,
- 45:06okay guys, Danny's coming, you guys.
- 45:09Is invited her. It's cool.
- 45:11You guys are all psyched about this, okay?
- 45:14And you're like wait, she's coming, you know, she's not
- 45:16coming. I invited her.
- 45:19She said yes, she bought a ticket but she's not coming.
- 45:25This is, by the way, this is your all suggestion.
- 45:29And that was this is literally the only like emotionally
- 45:32intelligent moment that Josh had was like when Christian first
- 45:35runs in and he's like, Danny is coming.
- 45:37Josh is like oh should we put up the sweet?
- 45:39And stuff because she clearly was not into it at the party.
- 45:44Yeah. And he's like no, no.
- 45:46I invited her. She's not coming but she has her
- 45:49ticket and she packed her bags. She's not coming this, this
- 45:53movie has some really good. Comedic moments in that one
- 45:55right there. Like, it kills me.
- 45:57I love it. But I think you see it on their
- 45:59faces, Mark is pissed. Yeah.
- 46:02Danny actually shows up and wherever she goes into the room,
- 46:05looks like, hey, Christian, can you read this paragraph for me?
- 46:08I think it's such a X5 walks into another room.
- 46:13Behind you. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 46:16Yeah, you can say I mean, he's obviously just like pissed off
- 46:19that Danny's coming. He doesn't want her to be there
- 46:22and so this gives Danny the opportunity to finally like talk
- 46:26one-on-one with pay away because Josh is going to talk.
- 46:29Yeah yeah. Danny and pail are talking for
- 46:33like a minute and then Josh like stands up microwaves, some
- 46:37coffee and like sits at this table in the kitchen like he is,
- 46:41you know, there's passive But this is like aggressively
- 46:44passive. Yeah man, this is what I'm
- 46:46saying. How is he friends with anybody
- 46:48here? I think the only reason that
- 46:50he's really tall random roommate pairing think so, and he doesn't
- 46:55have the energy to try and find anybody else.
- 46:57You know what, I actually would buy into that theory right there
- 47:00because he's just not friendly with Auntie but I do think he's
- 47:04like the same way that Christian is probably using Josh like
- 47:07Josh's using Pele. Oh yeah, you know, probably
- 47:11yeah, I could see that. Yeah, but and then Palais is,
- 47:16you know, like they're talking and Daniel's like yeah, we're
- 47:17actually going to get there on my birthday and he was like, oh,
- 47:19happy early birthday, you know, they kind of talked about school
- 47:22a little bit and she kind of hints that she has to retake
- 47:26some classes because she missed her finals.
- 47:29Yeah, understandable. And then he is like, hey, I
- 47:34wanted to tell you how very sorry I am and she like Kaido
- 47:39has a panic attack. If there's one thing that pay
- 47:41loves more than his mid summer activities, it's having these
- 47:46dramatic conversations about how his parents died to a key legal
- 47:51looks from Windows of opportunities to bring this up
- 47:53because like what do Danny and I have in common deaf parents.
- 47:57Yeah. All right I'm going to work that
- 47:59one in any chance I get and backfires every single time,
- 48:03every single time until he literally holds her down on a
- 48:06bed. Yeah.
- 48:07Yeah. Yeah, but this is an amazing
- 48:10transition shot because she goes to have her quiet panic attack
- 48:14in the bathroom and it does like this overhead shot and then it
- 48:17turns into an airplane bathroom. Yeah, and it's just so perfect
- 48:20like and yeah, she's in completely different clothes.
- 48:23They're on the airplane, they're flying the Sweden.
- 48:26We get into it like rental car van or whatever for the next
- 48:30scene and this this scene is drawn out a little bit more than
- 48:34it is in the theatrical Cut 2. So you get a lot more of their
- 48:37third eye. Yeah.
- 48:38And the theatrical cut like it's very quick Snippets and I use
- 48:42text message from Danny's friend, Amy, wishing her.
- 48:47A happy birthday. Oh, I wrote down the topics that
- 48:50they talked about on the way. Okay, hold on.
- 48:51But I just want to say, I wonder if this is the same friend that
- 48:54she was talking to the night, her parents died.
- 48:57I wonder if that's the sound. I would think so.
- 49:00She should be with hanging out with her more often and Yashin.
- 49:03Honestly, but I want with that like it has a Quick Cuts to like
- 49:06random conversations that they're having.
- 49:07Because it's a four-hour drive for them.
- 49:10So the first one is a three quit woman.
- 49:12Mmm. The second one is like how I
- 49:16think? They're quizzing Josh or like
- 49:17asking Josh how he feels about like Mass tragedy?
- 49:20How do you feel about genocide? How do you feel about the
- 49:22Holocaust? How do you feel about slavery?
- 49:24Is it goes dude, and let's see in the other one is a mark is
- 49:34like can you imagine guy reading the news and all you can think
- 49:37about Bludgeoned his wife. Yeah, right yeah.
- 49:41Which all Mark is what he is. One of those friends that you
- 49:46would not want to have around all the time but like he would
- 49:50be really fun sometimes. Yeah, he is that friend.
- 49:54Like yes, funny moments. He's a funny guy but he is also
- 49:57easily an asshole. Like he's one of those friends
- 50:00that like if you were friends with somebody who's friends with
- 50:02him and you only saw him like in that, like, degree of
- 50:07separation. Yeah.
- 50:08That mediator. Yeah.
- 50:09Like it, you don't have to be around them all the time.
- 50:12They're kind of Runs. Yeah, exactly.
- 50:14Also, there's like a wine because, you know, Josh talking
- 50:18about his thesis and Danny said, this could be good inspiration
- 50:22for Christian. And he's like, yeah, maybe and
- 50:25Danny says to Pele, see your brain washing.
- 50:28All your friends has already brainwashed.
- 50:32Whenever I joined the anthropology program.
- 50:36Yeah, that's probably true. Yeah, probably.
- 50:39Oh, and my next note is stopped and field comma drugs.
- 50:42Well, also they know Danny looks over at Josh and she notices he
- 50:47has a book that has like this W suck on it.
- 50:50It's a yeah. Then history of Nazi languages
- 50:53or something like that. Yeah.
- 50:54Which is a another hint about like the white supremacy thing
- 50:57that you were talking about. Apparently they have like their
- 50:59alphabet, they have like the runic alphabet that they use
- 51:02which apparently is very much tied in with that.
- 51:05So again, this is one of those things that I'm going to refer
- 51:08you guys to the subreddit because Smarter people than I
- 51:12have put together information on this, but they reference using
- 51:17the Elder, futhark futhark whatever.
- 51:21I don't know. I'll fuck another shit.
- 51:23I'm buying it as opposed to the newer and there's something
- 51:26about the way the languages are known and has been studied that
- 51:32for them to truly be using the Elder futhark, it has to be in
- 51:37you community, in this has to be their first of their grand
- 51:40festivities. There wasn't one ninety years
- 51:43ago. No, yeah, there is a really
- 51:46interesting like somebody that's like Sorry for not knowing the
- 51:52proper word, a language nerd. The language mr.
- 51:54Han? No, I love it.
- 51:58But, you know, that should be the official like title for
- 52:01those item ologist. Maybe, I don't know
- 52:05entomologist. As bugs.
- 52:07Exact language stories. Yeah so yeah so go check that
- 52:15out as we said in the description.
- 52:18Yeah so they this is like one of those very like quick signs
- 52:23about you know, this is definitely, they've got um some
- 52:30ties with Nazis. Yeah the guy ideology.
- 52:33Yeah, rooted in there and apparently there are some signs
- 52:36that are written in Swedish that hint to that as well.
- 52:40I don't speak Swedish so I don't know.
- 52:42Right. But that's what some people have
- 52:44said on the internet. Take that with a grain of salt.
- 52:48Okay. So what was the note stop and
- 52:52field comment drugs. Yes as basically the sex scene
- 52:56yeah we are introduced to ingmar though that is pele's friend who
- 53:01has also brought some guests along with him.
- 53:04So here's first of the things that I want to point out Is that
- 53:10they're all like learning each other's names and stuff, Dan?
- 53:12He's the only one who liked checks that she's getting the
- 53:14pronunciation, right? Yes.
- 53:16Liking my income are you know like she tries to make sure that
- 53:19she's getting that, right? They all do mushrooms.
- 53:23This is I'm going to give Christian his one sliver of
- 53:26credit that I give him the entire movie and it's that Danny
- 53:30is like I'm not in a place mentally or physically where I
- 53:34can do mushrooms and he's like, I will wait for you.
- 53:39Yes. We'll stay sober with you and
- 53:43what Mark is like, but we have to have the same trip.
- 53:46I was like well then you can wait too.
- 53:50This is the one and only time that I will say Christian is
- 53:53being a good guy. Yeah, I agree.
- 53:55Because I mean, you don't want to do mushrooms in a bad head
- 53:57space because that's how you have a bad trip as we see here
- 54:01very shortly. Yeah.
- 54:03So they started doing drugs and they're all having a different
- 54:07feelings about the trip. They're all enjoying at first
- 54:10and then yeah, Pele is a, he's talking about nature breathing
- 54:14within itself day, and he's just kind of looking around Josh's.
- 54:17Chill Christians shell. Mark is hyperventilating, he is
- 54:22enjoying it kind of but then like all of a sudden, a random
- 54:25guy walks by he's like, oh fuck a new person.
- 54:28I don't like new people. It's, like, lay down.
- 54:30Lay down, everybody. Come on, just please lay down
- 54:32with me and then he's, like, starts going off.
- 54:34He's like, I love you, guys. You guys are like my family,
- 54:36seriously and then family triggers Danny.
- 54:38She goes running, it basically ends up with her, like passing
- 54:43out in the woods, and they find her there.
- 54:45Six hours later and she had a good visual of her sister to
- 54:48there. They're so so yeah.
- 54:51It's the next day they are now marching to the actual site,
- 54:55where the festivities are going to take a chance and throughout
- 54:57all of this, I want to point out Mark, is paranoid about ticks
- 55:00and they're all giving him a hard time about it.
- 55:01I love that though. That's currently, this is like
- 55:04based on res or being really paranoid about 60, really?
- 55:08Yeah, I like to imagine that he's like doing this stuff.
- 55:12Like he's throwing this in himself like a delivering it
- 55:14like when they're doing that because re Asters probably just
- 55:16freaking out on said about 60 entire time.
- 55:18Yeah, yeah. Is a lot of the trivia.
- 55:21I know is like stuff that I've read over the years, so I can't
- 55:25Say this was like the freshest of memory, but I do think that
- 55:29some of it was at Living where people are trying to give him a
- 55:31hard time, oh, really? Yeah, I love that.
- 55:33But if you pay attention to mark for the rest of the movie, his
- 55:36socks are pulled over his jeans so I ticks can't get into his
- 55:40pants or shoes. It's a look but it's funny
- 55:44dialogue. Yeah.
- 55:46Even Josh Twins and on the ribbing to like he's kind of
- 55:50like making him. He's just trying to make him
- 55:52squirm a little bit. Yeah but they get to Orga.
- 55:56Yes. And they're all welcomes again.
- 56:01Danny says thank you or high or something and Swedish.
- 56:05She's so old in Sweden. Yeah they say she does
- 56:08technically correct. Yes.
- 56:11But she also says it in Swedish it, and she's the only one that
- 56:16does that. Which I find someone saying a
- 56:19bunch of anthropology students that are there to?
- 56:22I would say Joshua do it. Yeah.
- 56:24So here is the A thing I know with anthropology and sociology,
- 56:27there's like a whole debate about like, do you immerse
- 56:29yourself in or do You observe? But like, they are literally
- 56:32there in the community. They're sleeping in the same
- 56:35house at them. They are participating in the
- 56:36festival. At this point, you are immersed,
- 56:39learn some of the fucking language.
- 56:41Josh isn't really immersed in the experience from my bike.
- 56:46From watching this Eve really is observing and Danny is a
- 56:49Psychology major like she has no investment in this at all this
- 56:54real It's just like a tag-along vacation for her Christian,
- 56:58probably didn't give a fuck enough to even want to learn it
- 57:02and Mark is probably in the same boat.
- 57:05He's just kind of there. I don't even think he's a
- 57:08student. There is he like he doesn't even
- 57:10his thesis is never brought up once he is either a trust fund
- 57:14child. Yeah, it was not concerned about
- 57:16getting his degree or his like that friend, you have and you
- 57:21don't fully remember how you met them.
- 57:23You think at some point it was during college, but he's not.
- 57:25It in college anymore. So you don't know?
- 57:26Yeah, he's just hanging around there.
- 57:28Yeah. So yeah, we've got all of this,
- 57:32and there's like this moment to, or father odd comes over and
- 57:35Danny like comments about his like Garb.
- 57:39And he's like, yes, it's a girly, little dress and well
- 57:41blonde. He's talking about it.
- 57:42And then Josh like songs about some other community that
- 57:46dresses like that. Yeah.
- 57:48Odds. Like okay, yeah, cool also worth
- 57:52noting that he says, hello to all of them.
- 57:54And with Danny he gives her a hug and says, welcome home.
- 57:58See that's Interesting little detail sometimes that could just
- 58:01be like weird how people talk I don't know because like I mean
- 58:06we went to our nephews birthday this weekend and the Granddad
- 58:12there. Any time you come over to his
- 58:13house is your home now. Yeah.
- 58:16Like you know it's nice you know to have somebody say that but I
- 58:19do know you can. It can go either way.
- 58:21Yeah so they do their little welcome Fest.
- 58:23There will welcome ceremony belly makes a comment about this
- 58:27fire that's been going for as long.
- 58:29Long as he's been alive. It's all part of its part of all
- 58:31of their jobs to keep the fire going, which will be meaningful
- 58:34later. Yes.
- 58:37Okay. They sit for food.
- 58:43A man sings. He's like, giving thanks for the
- 58:47food and Josh's trying to ask what is being said and Pele is
- 58:52really just trying to flirt with Danny and like yeah, explain his
- 58:56community to hurt because he's the only like she's the only
- 58:59When he cares about knowing what's going on and Josh is
- 59:01like, hey, can you give me a trans or what's he singing until
- 59:05he's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:07Okay, yes. Yes, honey.
- 59:10Beautiful picture. I love it.
- 59:11I'll put it on the fridge so my parents died.
- 59:14Yeah. So they kids are all playing
- 59:18this game called Skin, the fool and this redheaded girl that I
- 59:22swear can't be more than 14. I know her age.
- 59:25Like, how old is she? She just turned 16, okay, okay,
- 59:30as they make a mention of her like whenever Pele is talking to
- 59:36her. I think it's allowed to fuck.
- 59:37Yeah. They whenever he's talking to
- 59:38Christian because he's like, hey, she's taken an interest in
- 59:41you. She just got this thing, which
- 59:43means like you get at your 15th birthday and then, Year later
- 59:46for a year ago. So yeah she's 16 years old she
- 59:50looks she looks young 60 are, you know?
- 59:53Maybe we're just biased from watching movies all the time
- 59:56where they cast sixteen-year-old like they cast 25 year, olds a
- 59:5916 year olds. Well hopefully she's amazed
- 1:00:02because we see her naked and this yeah, I know.
- 1:00:06I'm just saying like she looks really young.
- 1:00:07Yeah. Christian.
- 1:00:08Decide he wants to play skin, the fool after Maya, kick some,
- 1:00:11which that's a little sus Pro. Yeah, but once he's up, Well,
- 1:00:16he's like, hey, Danny. Happy birthday.
- 1:00:18Here's a drawing. I did of you and it's actually
- 1:00:21really good drawing. Yeah, he's a good portrait
- 1:00:23artist and she says that it's really nice, especially since
- 1:00:27Christian forgot. And he looks.
- 1:00:30Oh my God. What?
- 1:00:33Yeah. Like he like looks just
- 1:00:37embarrassed enough to like, worry if he's overstepped, but
- 1:00:39also like he knows that Christian sucks recipes.
- 1:00:43Not surprised for some watching this.
- 1:00:44I never caught. Onto him, like, actually trying
- 1:00:47to Dylan some kind of romance with her and but I like the more
- 1:00:51I watch it. The more obvious it is like he
- 1:00:53definitely sets his sights on her.
- 1:00:54Yeah. And Danny.
- 1:00:59She's like, it's my fault. I forgot to remind him Danny?
- 1:01:03No, I want to look like I want to get a spray bottle and every
- 1:01:05time she says something like that, I want to spray her.
- 1:01:07You know your worth. I can just picture that.
- 1:01:12So police tell them that they're supported by Lumber linen and
- 1:01:16homeopathics, and they also like have a plant that can supply
- 1:01:19some power. I didn't catch.
- 1:01:21It was winter water. So that's how they support the
- 1:01:24community Connie and Simon, who are two other outside.
- 1:01:28Is that were brought there by ingmar are engaged ingmar tries
- 1:01:32to make it seem like him and Connie were a much bigger thing
- 1:01:36than they were. Yeah, Connie is not letting that
- 1:01:38shit flies. I got, I didn't know that was a
- 1:01:40days ago and I'm sorry, did I miss a day?
- 1:01:42And we weren't, we had decided to become friends.
- 1:01:46Yeah. Just now and then, she's like,
- 1:01:50how long have you guys been there been together and
- 1:01:53Christians, like, three and a half years?
- 1:01:54Because, I know, it's, it's for, it's been four years.
- 1:01:58Cheers. So yeah, there's been together
- 1:02:01like a significant amount of time.
- 1:02:05Do you like the juxtaposition of these two couples?
- 1:02:07Like the one that's very happily together and then these two are
- 1:02:11on there, like, final days. Yeah.
- 1:02:14We see a tapestry for a love spell, and then a bear and this
- 1:02:18is one of the best like comedic moments because like the Simon
- 1:02:23and Connie or like getting a tour from ingmar and they're
- 1:02:26like, oh, are we not going to talk about the bear?
- 1:02:28And he's like, It's a, I mean, it's a touch.
- 1:02:33I really? Okay, so we learn that.
- 1:02:39The Harga think of life like the season.
- 1:02:41So from age, 12 18 is the spring.
- 1:02:44It's when you're a child from age 18 to 36, is the summer.
- 1:02:48That's when you do your pilgrimage from ages, 36 to 54
- 1:02:52is the fall. That's where your, a laborer and
- 1:02:55then from age, 54 to 72 is the winter.
- 1:02:57That's where you're a mentor. And then, Danny says, what
- 1:03:00happens after 72 and pay like, I was, and I, you think it's joke?
- 1:03:06Yeah. That's I love that like, yeah.
- 1:03:08Yeah, makes a little motion, like, cut your throat type
- 1:03:11thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:13Hello Lauren. Well, Danny and Company are
- 1:03:17looking around, the communal, sleeping area.
- 1:03:20Pele, kind of pulls Christian at the side to remind her to remind
- 1:03:24him of Danny's birthday. And then apparently he had a
- 1:03:29slice of cake. Ready for him to this cake come
- 1:03:31from. I feel like Pele.
- 1:03:33Had it ready? Do you think so?
- 1:03:34Yeah, like they're walking in and Christians like a tale.
- 1:03:37Why do you have a slice of cake? And he's like, I'll tell you in
- 1:03:39a minute. Do you think though that he
- 1:03:42would give it to him if he's trying to win Danny over?
- 1:03:45Because like, this right here is like a solid move from him.
- 1:03:48He's like, hey, by the way, like you forgot her birthday, dude.
- 1:03:50He needed a like, yeah, but he knew Christian was going to
- 1:03:53half-ass it, like, he half-asses everything.
- 1:03:55Because what happens is, Like Christian, like pools, Danny
- 1:03:59into, like just barely outside of the doorway of this building
- 1:04:03and he tries to light the candle and this slice of cake, and when
- 1:04:09it's not working, he's like happy birthday.
- 1:04:11Fuck. It's not working and dangerous
- 1:04:14like plz just stahp PLS. Like, it's fine, blah, he tries
- 1:04:18to I say, oh, it's the we don't have any nighttime here.
- 1:04:22Like I just didn't realize it was today was like, oh sure.
- 1:04:26Oh yeah. He's a bad liar.
- 1:04:28Yeah. You just it wasn't even on your
- 1:04:30radar at all. Yeah.
- 1:04:31And fellas like, right tomorrow's the first, the big
- 1:04:34ceremonies that the stupa and Josh is like wait a real one.
- 1:04:39And I feel like he is A dick in this moment because he knows
- 1:04:46exactly what it is. Yeah.
- 1:04:47And I understand him not wanting to tell Christian because he's
- 1:04:52liking dangling. This stuff of it said.
- 1:04:55But Danny though of all people yeah he was the one in the
- 1:05:00apartment at the beginning of the movie.
- 1:05:02When he's like do we need to put our Sweden stuff away since
- 1:05:04Danny? Can't Swede with us in Sweden
- 1:05:08and then now he's like, hey Danny, you know how you have
- 1:05:11that whole suicide-murder trauma.
- 1:05:14I hope you've been dealing with this, if not, you're about to
- 1:05:18experience something just as fucked up.
- 1:05:22Yeah, baby. He's just smiling at the
- 1:05:24Horizon. So what is it?
- 1:05:25He's just keeps giving them a little look.
- 1:05:28So the next day, we see girls picking flowers backwards and
- 1:05:32this is another funny line from Mark, where he says I'm about
- 1:05:37like somebody should tell those girls are walking stupid man.
- 1:05:40Yeah and Danny like brings Christian is he cute little
- 1:05:47bouquet of flowers and Christians I got it.
- 1:05:48You think these backwards? And it's ha, ha ha ha.
- 1:05:51It's one of those moments. Is that you Revel in if you're
- 1:05:53in an abusive relationship? Yeah, things are nice.
- 1:05:56Little bit of normalcy. Yeah.
- 1:05:58So we see an old couple at the kind of the head of the table.
- 1:06:03The tables are all arranged in Ruins.
- 1:06:07But they're, you know, whatever the place of honor they do a
- 1:06:10chant and then a toast and then they're carried to the top of a
- 1:06:14cliff. So we see this crowd gathered
- 1:06:18around at the bottom of the cliff.
- 1:06:21A couple of them have a giant Mallet.
- 1:06:24Very weepy looking mouth. Yeah.
- 1:06:27And we see the old couple at the top of the cliff and you know
- 1:06:30what's coming like you just know but you can't look away.
- 1:06:35Yeah. Like they cut themselves and
- 1:06:38then they go and like smear their blood on a stone that has
- 1:06:41like a bunch of runes on them and then they go and pose.
- 1:06:46And then yeah, the old lady you love as she dabs.
- 1:06:51Basically, it's still very good. Dad.
- 1:06:54Yeah. And at that moment, she is like,
- 1:06:57okay. And then you can like Danny
- 1:06:59senses that's going to happen because she asks, grabs
- 1:07:01Christian. Yes, and then she jumps off and
- 1:07:05they have a little stone that there.
- 1:07:07I gets their target and she lands face first into the stone
- 1:07:12base explodes. She did it the smart way she did
- 1:07:17it, the smart way because my man comes up next.
- 1:07:21This guy does not know how to do this first.
- 1:07:26Like he is jumping into a lake. Let me put this into like I want
- 1:07:31to make this man. Look stupid right now.
- 1:07:34He has been a part of this place for years.
- 1:07:38How many of these has he attended?
- 1:07:40He knows how to do this. He should know how to do this,
- 1:07:42but he goes leg first. Jones of the lame ever see
- 1:07:48somebody dared him to do it. He's like fucking debt, probably
- 1:07:53like made The Pact when he looks like a teenager something to the
- 1:07:57person he made it with his like a year younger than him so he's
- 1:08:01like fuck he's here and so watching me so yeah yeah so then
- 1:08:06he falls down and because he's not dead, the Mallet people come
- 1:08:09over and take turns at the Malik sporting his face.
- 1:08:12Yes. Oh God.
- 1:08:15Edgar a man's skull. I like that as like a terrible
- 1:08:20for like, getting bludgeoned, like, exploding his wig exported
- 1:08:24to him. Yeah, it's yeah, it's visceral.
- 1:08:27I like, there's actually like a detail.
- 1:08:30Like, how they did this. I made like a, like a
- 1:08:33retractable face type thing. It can like reform back into
- 1:08:37like a normal face. If there's one thing re Aster
- 1:08:40loves its ahead prosthetic. Yeah, it's nice.
- 1:08:45So yeah. During this whole thing, they're
- 1:08:47like that audio is ringing because I guess like Danny's
- 1:08:50like panicking bad that you can tell like the subtitles
- 1:08:53especially tell you where all is being said, but Simon and Connie
- 1:08:56are freaking out with the or yeah, they're trying to get
- 1:08:59them. So they're saying, what the
- 1:09:00fuck. We need to stop them called
- 1:09:02ambulance. This is fucked and tells them
- 1:09:05they're all fucked numerous times.
- 1:09:08Yeah and this is where your sieve is like ingmar.
- 1:09:11Did you not explain this to them?
- 1:09:14And already going to explain Yeah, expect.
- 1:09:17Yeah, it's a genuinely surprised that they are freaking out of
- 1:09:21this event. Yeah, and she tries to explain,
- 1:09:24she is like, for us, it's an honor.
- 1:09:25Like they're happy to do this, we believe in life like a cycle,
- 1:09:29that woman, her name is syliva that baby over there.
- 1:09:31Not yet, born will inherit that name when people grow old we
- 1:09:35don't want our lives to spoil. We went to end it whenever we
- 1:09:39like are still good and I feel like this is a I'm not going to
- 1:09:46get into the philosophy of an electing yourself.
- 1:09:51That's a very complex topic that we do not have the space for in
- 1:09:57this podcast today. Yes, episode this time, however,
- 1:10:04this reframing of it, As something that can have.
- 1:10:11A silver lining to it, I think ends up being important to
- 1:10:16Danny. Yeah, because the trauma that
- 1:10:19she went through with her sister doing this to herself.
- 1:10:25I think it gives her a way to reframe the way she Is
- 1:10:32processing all of that. Wow.
- 1:10:34You know I never even thought of that but you're right like this
- 1:10:37gives her a whole new perspective on the whole thing.
- 1:10:40I mean it's not like a murder-suicide type thing but
- 1:10:43like again this is not condoning or condemning it.
- 1:10:48No they just. Yeah, it's giving her, like I
- 1:10:50said, furthering like her plot, like her getting sucked into
- 1:10:55this whole thing. Yes, exactly.
- 1:10:58And I think that's a big part. I think that's a big part of why
- 1:11:02Pele made sure that Danny was going to be there.
- 1:11:06Mark skipped out. By the way, Mark skipped out.
- 1:11:09What to go take a nap? Yeah, I think it's a big
- 1:11:12important. Thing, and I think it takes
- 1:11:15Danny will see several scenes. She's still freaking out about
- 1:11:18this partially because, yeah, it is a an upsetting ritual.
- 1:11:24Yes. For them to witness definitely
- 1:11:26strong sizing. Definitely Also, it's probably
- 1:11:32kicking up a bunch of Dusty uncomfortable memories for her.
- 1:11:37Yes. And I mean, like, kicking up
- 1:11:39dust, I don't mean that her memories are dusty.
- 1:11:40This is all very fresh, while they're walking away Danny's,
- 1:11:44like, I just need to really not be here and Christians.
- 1:11:46Just like, okay, bye. Take some time to yourself, he's
- 1:11:51excited about it. Because I mean, at this point,
- 1:11:54he's made the decision to base his thesis on the horta Yeah,
- 1:12:00just Midsummer here. Yeah, so while Danny is off, you
- 1:12:04know, having her Moment by herself yet again, she is silent
- 1:12:09freak-outs except when until she gets away and she has very
- 1:12:13explosive freak-outs. Yeah, Christian decides.
- 1:12:18Now is the time to confront and Josh, and he's like, hey, I just
- 1:12:21want you to know. I'm going to do my thesis here
- 1:12:24and Josh is like, what the fuck? And he was evil, you're doing
- 1:12:27all Midsummer traditions and this is where we kind of learned
- 1:12:31that Josh is being a little sneaky snake and he said, yeah,
- 1:12:34I'm going to do my thesis on Midsummer Traditions, but really
- 1:12:38he wanted to get as much information about horak as he
- 1:12:40could, because this is like, You know, a whole new community.
- 1:12:45He could get a lot of dangerous. Yes, thesis by talking about
- 1:12:50this unknown Community. Yeah, I mean, he has his own
- 1:12:53motives. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:12:54He's sneaky sneak too, but he's, you know, he calls out
- 1:12:59Christian, he is like, you know, I've had to hold your hand
- 1:13:02through every little bit. Look at this wonderful jstor
- 1:13:04reference, which I absolutely crack up on as a, as a nurse
- 1:13:09former grad student. Fuck you Travis.
- 1:13:12You're the one that called people nerds to begin with.
- 1:13:15I said that it wasn't the right terminology.
- 1:13:18Well, dude, we have a whole episode where we dedicated the
- 1:13:22term for Android, says nerds. It's just nerds are Helloween
- 1:13:28three nerd by. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:32It's a term of endearment in nerds, nerds are celebrated
- 1:13:36here. It's fine except for, you know,
- 1:13:40Christians being a bad right now because he's trying to leech Of
- 1:13:43Josh and I love the fact that Josh like flat-out calls and now
- 1:13:47this is like the only time anybody directly shits on
- 1:13:51Christian and I like tell him exactly how it is, like, because
- 1:13:54like the whole time, like people are kind of like it's like the
- 1:13:59politeness like, you know, you don't want to like outright
- 1:14:01address, the situation with him, being kind of like a piece of
- 1:14:04shit, but Josh like just like, rip the Band-Aid off and just
- 1:14:08slick, unloads on him, and it's incredible.
- 1:14:10And then we kind of see this happening throughout the Rest of
- 1:14:13the movie people like her baby him through his bullshit and
- 1:14:18it's kind of nice. Let's watch.
- 1:14:20Yeah, yeah. So it's and this scenes extended
- 1:14:25to in the director's cut. Yeah, it is.
- 1:14:28Yeah, they, I mean, basically, it all ends with Christian just
- 1:14:33came to him because he wanted to collaborate, you know, again,
- 1:14:36ride the coattails of Josh's research, basic I'm doing it
- 1:14:41anyways. You know, I don't care how you
- 1:14:43feel about it and he walks out and then marks, like, dude, you
- 1:14:46let me miss that because he who just learned from Connie and
- 1:14:50Simon Simon that. I was, you know, a bunch of
- 1:14:53people, jumping off of a cliff crochet, goes to talk to Allah
- 1:14:56and Maya about this tree that they're decorating.
- 1:15:00And then he asks about the at the stoop on and I think it's
- 1:15:05really funny watching him do all of his research questions
- 1:15:08because he's got nothing for paired.
- 1:15:10He's just asking things as They come to mind.
- 1:15:13He's not taking notes. The older lady in the
- 1:15:15background. I can't remember her name with
- 1:15:17the bangs. Yeah, she is like Try not to
- 1:15:22laugh at you. See the smirk on her face?
- 1:15:24Yeah, I didn't notice that until you pointed yes.
- 1:15:27Last time I think it's great. Josh until a talk and Josh is
- 1:15:31like you know trying to make sure that he's got dibs on it
- 1:15:34and fell a is like well the elders aren't going to approve,
- 1:15:37anything being written down and Josh was like so I use aliases
- 1:15:41and he was well then you can't even get it.
- 1:15:42Peer-reviewed. So what's the point and then and
- 1:15:44Pella is like you guys are gonna die.
- 1:15:46I don't want to have to have this conversation with you.
- 1:15:49I want to go talk to Dan You're blocking me and he's like, fine,
- 1:15:53I'll go. I'll talk to them which you
- 1:15:55know, if that's the case, if you know, you're going to kill them
- 1:15:58anyway. Just say, yeah, you can write
- 1:15:59down whatever you want. Not only that the like Josh
- 1:16:02calls them on like, he's like, and by the way, I Christian did
- 1:16:05talk to me about this and I told him the same thing I told you
- 1:16:08and then Josh is like, I thought you said you didn't talk to
- 1:16:10Christian and then this is when it's kind of unraveling for
- 1:16:13pele's AA. Fuck.
- 1:16:14I'll talk to them and he just walks away like yeah, he's got
- 1:16:17them both going on a y-yeah. And then he finds Danny is
- 1:16:21packing inside. That's all he really cares about
- 1:16:23it. Yeah.
- 1:16:24And then he talks to her and she's like, I don't know why I'm
- 1:16:26here, like I'm not into anthropology like you guys.
- 1:16:29I'm not a fucking nerd. Oh, wish she said that and you
- 1:16:36know he was like out of all my friends.
- 1:16:37I was most excited for you to come because I also have dead
- 1:16:42parents. Yeah, no, you need to hear this.
- 1:16:49He talks through. Like she's basically just says,
- 1:16:52what are we even talking about? Like, that's nothing to do with
- 1:16:55this at all. It's like, no, Denny trust me.
- 1:16:59I know what you've been through and he basically gets down to
- 1:17:03like, does he hold you, do you feel a hell?
- 1:17:06So, what he says is that his parents died in a fire when he
- 1:17:09was young and he's like, unlike you, I didn't have a chance to
- 1:17:14feel alone because I had a community here to support me.
- 1:17:17They held me. They helped me.
- 1:17:19Yeah. Do you feel held by Christian?
- 1:17:22Does he feel like home to you? And yeah, on the one hand, he's
- 1:17:26very obviously hitting on her, including like the hand-holding
- 1:17:30that is happening. Yes.
- 1:17:32But on the other hand, he does have a point like she's got
- 1:17:36nobody and it's you can tell it's resonating with her to like
- 1:17:40she's actually considering this like oh shit.
- 1:17:43I don't feel held by him. Yeah, that we see the bodies are
- 1:17:46on that fire. That it's everybody's job to
- 1:17:49keep going. It faces man.
- 1:17:52If you just see them, they like Cuts hardcore, zoomed in right
- 1:17:55on those faces. So, Christian finds Danny
- 1:17:59Outside Alone. This is another cutscene and
- 1:18:01she's like are you not bothered by what we just saw?
- 1:18:04He's like yeah, no. Oh man, it was a shock like know
- 1:18:09that was really really shocking. Like you can tell he's not a
- 1:18:14good actor. He's sucks man.
- 1:18:17And when she got to respect an accurate that can Fake bad
- 1:18:21acting, that's true. Yeah.
- 1:18:22Yeah. I mean, he kills this role
- 1:18:24because he's the hateable guy all the way through and then he
- 1:18:27was like, but, you know, I'm sure they think that us taking
- 1:18:30our elders and nursing homes. His par Barrack to, you know,
- 1:18:33this is just a different culture.
- 1:18:35And it's almost like he's doing like, what about isn't to her?
- 1:18:39Like, you know, what about nursing homes?
- 1:18:41You know, like, just whatever like he's just, it doesn't
- 1:18:44really give a fuck. Like he really just like he's
- 1:18:47just, he isn't, he doesn't care. He's found a means to an end.
- 1:18:50And what he was you could tell during the at a soup on that.
- 1:18:54He was actually affected by like watching the deaths.
- 1:18:58But here like, it almost is like after seeing that like something
- 1:19:03clicked with him and he had like a disconnect like he separated
- 1:19:07Humanity from this right here. He's like.
- 1:19:09All right, I'm just going to watch this and you know, if
- 1:19:13these people will die in the process, you know?
- 1:19:16All right, I'll have some interesting material to write
- 1:19:18about. Hmm.
- 1:19:19Yeah, I think. That's partly why he decides
- 1:19:21that he's going to write his thesis about this because he's
- 1:19:23like, oh, this is a thing that people don't hear about a lot.
- 1:19:27So, yeah, I'm gonna have new information.
- 1:19:31Like he wants to be first on the scene.
- 1:19:33Yeah. And so they get taken to a
- 1:19:37special ceremony, it's by the river.
- 1:19:40They offer that decorated tree that we saw earlier gets thrown
- 1:19:44in there. And there's this whole, this is
- 1:19:46a completely new scene that yes, from the theatrical.
- 1:19:50And it's extended as context to what happens to Connie waiter to
- 1:19:55so they throw on the tree and there's it's like this whole
- 1:19:59there's so much pageantry to it because they have this whole
- 1:20:03speech but like oh my mother is still hungry but wha so this.
- 1:20:08Well Malachi comes forward. Hi this is name is actually bore
- 1:20:14but he looks like the ozone. I like hi.
- 1:20:20Keep quiet if you've been with us from the beginning.
- 1:20:22Yeah. If you know you know yeah and he
- 1:20:26liked offers himself and the adults clip weights to his
- 1:20:33ankles and giant ass Rock. A bigger Rock than Christian is.
- 1:20:39Yeah. And actually yeah yeah.
- 1:20:44Do they actually clip weights to his ankles like, oh what?
- 1:20:47I, okay, I miss that because I just saw them.
- 1:20:50Take this. The boulder like The Rock has a
- 1:20:52chain but it's not chained to. They don't want to go that far
- 1:20:56into this. They just like plump it on his
- 1:20:58belly and you've got a little like ankle chains on him and I'm
- 1:21:03assuming that's what the Rock is wrapped around.
- 1:21:05No, it's not. It's not attached to anything.
- 1:21:06I paid attention to the chain. It's just dangling.
- 1:21:09Promise like they're like, I don't know.
- 1:21:12What's the kid hits the bottom of the ocean?
- 1:21:14Like it. He's too stupid.
- 1:21:15Yeah, he's offering himself like and Then Danny like starts to
- 1:21:21speak up, but then somebody else is like, no, he's shown his
- 1:21:25bravery and that is more than enough.
- 1:21:27So I'm confused. Would they have actually done
- 1:21:30this had she not spoken? Not do you think?
- 1:21:33Because I mean, like she said, like it's it's almost like a
- 1:21:36little play that they're doing, you know, I don't think they
- 1:21:39would have. I think that, they fully
- 1:21:41intended like this is a ceremony that they do, but it was
- 1:21:44intended to be one of the outside sacrifices all along.
- 1:21:48Yeah, I see. So after this scene day in
- 1:21:53Christian have like a fight outside and Danna it is like she
- 1:21:59gets what's happening. She's like, they are never going
- 1:22:01to let you guys write about this.
- 1:22:03They don't want people, she's like, they are doing Pagan
- 1:22:06rituals. They are counting on the outside
- 1:22:09world never finding out. How are you this stupid?
- 1:22:13And then she just like while Christian is all flustered she's
- 1:22:19suddenly like Like do you even love me anymore?
- 1:22:22And he's like, and she goes, yeah, we're in the devaluation
- 1:22:26phase and next comes discard is don't use your psychology words
- 1:22:32on me which that pisses me off because he was like trying to
- 1:22:35use his whole anthropology. So if on her earlier and she was
- 1:22:38upset about that to stupin like don't downplay what she's
- 1:22:43studying and then you know, because she she's just like
- 1:22:48that. I mean we've been growing apart.
- 1:22:50Long time and he doesn't have anything to say so he starts to
- 1:22:53walk away. But instead Of pulling Danny
- 1:22:58McBride and deciding. He's too far away, he does turn
- 1:23:02around and comes out his. And by the way when you do
- 1:23:05things like give me flowers, I know exactly what you're doing
- 1:23:09and she's like, what? He's like it just reminds me
- 1:23:12that I never do nice things for her and she's like, what the
- 1:23:14fuck are you talking about? Like oh like those flowers that
- 1:23:16you gave me earlier. You don't think that that's a
- 1:23:18jab in my face about how like I don't do little things for you
- 1:23:21because I just picked some fucking flowers.
- 1:23:24Like I did like I wasn't In there was no thought other than
- 1:23:27I thought it would be like a nice thing to do.
- 1:23:29He's like yeah right you're just rubbing it in my face.
- 1:23:31How thoughtless I am like this is this is a classic like abuser
- 1:23:37tactic like just turn in something completely innocent on
- 1:23:42its head to. Yeah yeah so it's just fuck
- 1:23:45Christian and there are a lot of people that were upset about the
- 1:23:51this cut of the movie. Making him look like so much of
- 1:23:53a worse guy and I'm like all these Clues were already.
- 1:23:56Be there in the theatrical cut. Yeah, it didn't really have any
- 1:23:59redeeming moment in the theatrical cut, other than the
- 1:24:02moment with the mushrooms, which I will give him credit for.
- 1:24:04Yeah, I mean and it's not needed, but it definitely does
- 1:24:08like flesh it out a little bit more.
- 1:24:10Like, you get to see the whole like, deterioration of the
- 1:24:13relationship, which it helps with the upcoming scenes, where
- 1:24:17Danny does start speaking up more and more to him.
- 1:24:19Yeah, it's not like, it's not as sudden yeah, like, because like,
- 1:24:22it's the next morning after this and then they're like, hey, I'm
- 1:24:25sorry about last night. I like, you know.
- 1:24:27Yeah, like they're making out there trying though.
- 1:24:29I get on with the relationship still but let's see what happens
- 1:24:32next. That night.
- 1:24:34Maya puts a love Rune under Christians, better, Christians
- 1:24:39dad. And then Danny has her dream
- 1:24:42that everybody leaves without her.
- 1:24:44No, yeah. And I like that scene because
- 1:24:47like, this shows Mark, he's like staring from the back seat,
- 1:24:51which he totally would, and he's got the physical.
- 1:24:54He's like, I'm amused by The fact that they're leaving Danny
- 1:24:57Vine. Yeah and she spits out smoke.
- 1:25:00So the next morning we learned that Josh and Christian both get
- 1:25:05approval to write about their thesis as long as they don't use
- 1:25:07real names and don't take any pictures.
- 1:25:10We find out that Maya is a legally allowed to have sex we
- 1:25:16see Dean and Christian makeup. And then Mark pisses on the
- 1:25:22incest real tree. Yes.
- 1:25:24The thing about the pictures though, when they first got
- 1:25:28there. Josh asks, can I take pictures?
- 1:25:29And Pele says. Yes discreetly.
- 1:25:31So he does kind of like sneak them but as like I noticed in
- 1:25:35this like as the movie goes on Josh gets more like was like
- 1:25:40Brazen the right word. Like you you see him like just
- 1:25:42holding his phone out just like yeah, boarding everything.
- 1:25:45Yeah, it's not discreet about it at all.
- 1:25:46Yeah he's that guy who puts five minutes of a concert on his
- 1:25:49Tic-Tac. And it's a Snapchat or Instagram
- 1:25:51stories or whatever. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:53I mean that's I mean, I understand him trying to
- 1:25:56document it for his whole thing which I'm sure is important.
- 1:25:59But it's all like very minor details but then again, it's not
- 1:26:03shitty quality. Pictures to though, not only
- 1:26:05that, but I mean, it's kind of outright going against the will
- 1:26:08of these people. They don't want to be recorded
- 1:26:11Mark pisses on the tree. Yeah.
- 1:26:13And wolf. Is he swears Vengeance on him
- 1:26:19for Rest of the movie like, is for the rest of the time.
- 1:26:23Mark is on screen office in the background.
- 1:26:26Staring him down. Yeah, it's the ancestral tree
- 1:26:30and apparently it represents like all of the dead from their
- 1:26:33ashes are all scattered there. Yeah.
- 1:26:36But it really is the equivalent of pissing on a gravestone.
- 1:26:39Yes, it is. And Mark has no way of callous
- 1:26:42about it. He, I mean, I have no way of
- 1:26:45knowing about it, but once he's told he has absolutely zero
- 1:26:49remorse. Yes, that's true.
- 1:26:51It would be one thing if he's like, oh fuck, I am so sorry.
- 1:26:54I feel so bad. What can I do to make up for it?
- 1:26:56And he's like, all right, but you guys really need to get over
- 1:26:59it also who goes and pees on a tree out in the middle of
- 1:27:02everywhere, they have fucking bathrooms.
- 1:27:04They're not, people are like, pissing and shitting on the
- 1:27:07fields out there. Like, I'm not like looking in
- 1:27:09the background and seeing somebody out there doing that
- 1:27:11all the time. Like he, he made that decision
- 1:27:14to piss publicly. So yes, office sworn Revenge.
- 1:27:22Yes, Connie is panicking because Simon is gone.
- 1:27:27They were supposed to leave together and yeah, who is it?
- 1:27:31Father odd is, like, Ian drove him to the station.
- 1:27:35There wasn't room for both of you.
- 1:27:36We obey traffic laws so you can do sat on his lap.
- 1:27:39We'll come back and get you. It's a 90-minute trip, you might
- 1:27:43not make it before the last train of the day and she's like
- 1:27:45I do not like a single word that you're saying she's like that
- 1:27:48doesn't Anything. Yeah, and she's the last and he
- 1:27:50sees of her, she's freaking out about all of it.
- 1:27:53She doesn't like runs off on her own.
- 1:27:54Yes. Christian is asking more awkward
- 1:27:58questions. He's not a very good interviewer
- 1:28:00in any way shape or form, but we do learn that traits shown is
- 1:28:05kids determine their jobs as adults.
- 1:28:08So like Ulf showed like protectiveness.
- 1:28:11And now he's like a guardian and a doctor, well, showed an
- 1:28:14interest in trees and dead trees, but I do find that it's
- 1:28:18interesting. Thing, because they said that
- 1:28:20even as a child fell, a always had a good Instinct for people
- 1:28:23and that's something that comes up a lot throughout this because
- 1:28:26he brought in New Blood to the community and what is he
- 1:28:29studying in his American School anthropology?
- 1:28:33Interesting, I never really thought about that.
- 1:28:35Yeah, they also reveal the Oracle to yes.
- 1:28:40So, we okay, one little quick scene right before this, is that
- 1:28:46Danny gets pulled in, to help with dinner.
- 1:28:48Like Some of the women invite her and she very willingly does
- 1:28:52so because hey, she's here, she's a part of this community
- 1:28:55for this week and she's like, you know what?
- 1:28:56I will help with dinner and the women all seem to be really
- 1:28:59excited to have her in there. They all complement her, their
- 1:29:02love-bombing her and we see sieve outside staring through
- 1:29:06the window watching. Danny acclimate really I didn't
- 1:29:09notice that. Yep.
- 1:29:10Oh and also because she's doing that Christian is going around,
- 1:29:14interviewing people. Same thing with Josh and Marcus
- 1:29:17kind of like awkwardly. Vaping out in the field making
- 1:29:20eye contact with that girl, that keeps looking at him.
- 1:29:23And then they all hear a scream from a woman.
- 1:29:25Yes, which is assumed to be kind.
- 1:29:28Yes. So father out explains to Josh
- 1:29:32about the Revere outer. There are 16 FX represented by
- 1:29:36ruins from most to least holy. He describes it as emotional
- 1:29:40sheet music. Each year, they had our each
- 1:29:42generation. They have an oracle, somebody
- 1:29:45who has unclouded judgment. Who is the deliberate product of
- 1:29:50inbreeding? Yeah.
- 1:29:52So he's like mentally disabled and basically what he does is
- 1:29:56you just takes paint and just kind of like does like Paintings
- 1:30:00on. Yeah pages.
- 1:30:01And they like, they interpret it from.
- 1:30:03What? He paints.
- 1:30:04Yes. At dinner.
- 1:30:06We see everybody's got their little meat pies.
- 1:30:09And I will lemonade Christians is a little special.
- 1:30:13He got the double whammy. Yeah.
- 1:30:15So is this some strawberry lemonade?
- 1:30:18This woman is move the pink and his pies a little bit pupae
- 1:30:23because it is a bite of that pie.
- 1:30:27Like, there's a single like little Curly hair and then they
- 1:30:30all recognized his pubes and I do that's a fucking pube but
- 1:30:35nobody notices that his drink is like redder than anybody else's
- 1:30:39and what's important is in the love spell.
- 1:30:41Tapestry that we saw earlier the love spell involves a woman
- 1:30:48clipping her pubic hairs and putting it in the man's food and
- 1:30:51putting her menstrual blood and his drink and then they and she
- 1:30:54puts a rune under his bed as he sleeps, and then they fall in
- 1:30:57love and she gets pregnant and that's what this woman is.
- 1:30:59Doing the Christian this whole movie.
- 1:31:01Yes, she's like making this child.
- 1:31:04Yes. The 16 year old child, she is
- 1:31:06making a love potion for Christian.
- 1:31:09Yeah, this point Connie is no longer there either.
- 1:31:13Yawns, is that? Oh, Simon called from the train
- 1:31:16station and calmed her down? And then he's like, I don't feel
- 1:31:20like that's true and she's just kind of like, they're all kind
- 1:31:23of sitting there quietly awkward, like, Mark once wants
- 1:31:27to go have her, show me. She's going to show me a lot, I
- 1:31:33love randomly doing that like, hey, can I show you something?
- 1:31:35Like she's gonna show me? Yeah, Josh is fixated on the
- 1:31:41Ruby router Christian, just a pubic hair and he's not sure how
- 1:31:46much more was in there. He's also trying to interview
- 1:31:48people, still awkwardly and Danny just like just kind of
- 1:31:53says that lad. I could see you doing that
- 1:31:56Christians. Like when she's like, I can see
- 1:31:58ya and he Like, are you serious? She's like, he's like, what the
- 1:32:02fuck is that supposed to mean? You know what?
- 1:32:04I means bitch. Like right there.
- 1:32:06Yeah. That's when like Danny made her
- 1:32:09transition into just being done with Christian basically so that
- 1:32:14night, Josh goes to sleep with his sneakers on and he sneaks
- 1:32:18into the temple and is taking pictures of the Ruby router,
- 1:32:21which he was specifically told not to do.
- 1:32:24Yes, because he asks, father, Todd said absolutely not freaked
- 1:32:29out when Are you asked? Yeah, it was almost like he was
- 1:32:32tempting him. Like, no, you can't sink any big
- 1:32:35shit's, not in my root beer attic.
- 1:32:40So he's in there, he's taking pictures.
- 1:32:43And then suddenly the door opens and then it looks like Marc
- 1:32:46Marquez, straight up, Donald Duck, and he's got his dick out.
- 1:32:51But somebody else all of a sudden comes over from the side
- 1:32:55and hit something like, listen, here's the thing, I get that was
- 1:32:58supposed to be York's face. But no way are those marks.
- 1:33:03Little chickeny legs. Those are some muscular thighs?
- 1:33:06Yes, no, it's big. Okay, it's dark out so he can't
- 1:33:10fully. See, he sees the silhouette but
- 1:33:11he also gets like a very like sweat image of marks face
- 1:33:15somebody comes from the side and bonk some with the Mallet and
- 1:33:19then like, you see much gentler. What have saying, what happens?
- 1:33:23Yeah, whoa, okay. Hits, his head is about to get
- 1:33:26exploded. Also, but before that happens,
- 1:33:29the I is wearing marxists face like his skin basically skin the
- 1:33:34full. Yep.
- 1:33:36And it's really creepy goes for whether face on them but yeah
- 1:33:39they bash his head I always think of it more because
- 1:33:41Leatherface has like sewing skills involved.
- 1:33:44I was thinking more of Devil's Rejects.
- 1:33:48Yeah yeah probably more. I think it's a combination what?
- 1:33:52Whether face puts a little bit more effort into it.
- 1:33:55Yeah, well whether faces is more terrifying.
- 1:33:58Yeah. Is this right here is just
- 1:34:00straight up, like, wearing ya fool skin.
- 1:34:03So the breakfast, the next morning and Josh and marker,
- 1:34:07both missing, and the Ruby router is also missing.
- 1:34:10And then Christian, Danny and fella gets stopped after they
- 1:34:13drop off their breakfast plates and they're like, hey we're your
- 1:34:17friends and crew goes, I just want you to know.
- 1:34:20I've never seen that man before in my life, I do not associate
- 1:34:24with them as friends like he fully throws him under the bus.
- 1:34:29You can see both DNA and Pele are both so disgusted with him.
- 1:34:33I think father art is also a little bit, put off.
- 1:34:35It's like fuck, man. Like I know who it was.
- 1:34:39Like, I know who you are, you suck.
- 1:34:41Yeah, and tell he's like, I'll go look for the Ruby router and
- 1:34:47father is like, yeah, go ahead and do that Danny.
- 1:34:50You go with the women, Christian says wants to speak to you.
- 1:34:56It's like dear God. I hope this is the last time we
- 1:34:58speak. So Danny gets enlightened gets
- 1:35:03dressed. She gets her hair done because
- 1:35:05pretty little flower crown. And all of these dresses, I'll
- 1:35:09have like their own individual rooms and they're all supposed
- 1:35:11to represent the stories of the people wearing them really.
- 1:35:15Yeah Danny's got specific runes on her dress and her zurs if I'm
- 1:35:20remembering right I want to say it's like something about family
- 1:35:22and inheritance so interesting. Yeah that's that's nice little
- 1:35:26details. Yeah so they Drugs.
- 1:35:30So they can go dance around the maypole.
- 1:35:33Yes. Meanwhile Christian is having
- 1:35:36his discussion with Steve. Basically.
- 1:35:39She just spells it out like hold on.
- 1:35:42They're sitting like with their faces.
- 1:35:46Six inches from each other. Yeah, it is the most I like the
- 1:35:50chairs. They have fifth.
- 1:35:53They cannot both sit down at the same time and like they stand in
- 1:35:57between them together and they cannot sit down at the same
- 1:36:00time. They should has to sit down
- 1:36:01first and then since it's down there uncomfortably close.
- 1:36:04It's a it's almost like an intimidation move on her part
- 1:36:08and she's like, hey, you know what's that redheaded?
- 1:36:11Shout out there. You motherfucker and he's like,
- 1:36:15I think I hate her pube and she says that's probably right
- 1:36:19sounds about, right? You guys are perfect.
- 1:36:22Astrological matches and he's like, what?
- 1:36:26And she's like do you want to meet with her?
- 1:36:29And he was like, I'm here with somebody Danny, she's like, I'm
- 1:36:33not asking you to get married, you would never be approved for
- 1:36:36that. But what do you call it as
- 1:36:41anything to do with him? Also being I think it has to do
- 1:36:45with him being white. Yeah, probably.
- 1:36:49But she also mentions that she's like you can use it for your
- 1:36:53studying at. You can be immersed in this
- 1:36:56object, you can learn about our sexual activities and he's like
- 1:36:59can I witness the sex rights without being involved and the
- 1:37:02scene Cuts away? But you know that the answer is
- 1:37:04no. Yes and he goes and joins them a
- 1:37:09queen celebration. So basically it's a test of
- 1:37:12endurance. Else.
- 1:37:13They just dance until they drop the around.
- 1:37:15A maypole around going in circles.
- 1:37:17Yeah. So they're getting dizzy their
- 1:37:20drugs. They're all giggling and having
- 1:37:22fun. It's probably rigged and Danny's
- 1:37:24favors where I was going to ask. Like, most people assume it is
- 1:37:27seems like it but why would I mean do they need it to be an
- 1:37:30outsider like that doesn't make any sense to me.
- 1:37:32I think a big part of it is because it put because the ninth
- 1:37:37sacrifice is chosen by the May Queen.
- 1:37:40So I think putting her in that position where she Like has to
- 1:37:43make that decision. She was like, think it also puts
- 1:37:47her in a position where she feels.
- 1:37:50Like she is more obligated to stay.
- 1:37:52Yeah, probably. She's more obligated to say
- 1:37:54again. It's also more of that
- 1:37:55love-bombing. Yeah, true.
- 1:37:58But she actually ends up winning.
- 1:38:01So while she's doing this though Christian sits down next to Pele
- 1:38:07and Ola comes over with Some spring spring while drugs, she
- 1:38:13causes spring water with the special properties.
- 1:38:16Yeah. And he was like, no thanks.
- 1:38:18I'm worried about having a bad trip because I you know be fun.
- 1:38:21She is actually incredibly honest about because he's like
- 1:38:25what is this? There was this doing he's like
- 1:38:27she's like in additions. Yeah, it basically breaks down
- 1:38:30your defenses like basically we want to influence you to fuck
- 1:38:35Roofing. You.
- 1:38:36Yeah. And I'm going to say this now, I
- 1:38:40hate Christian. I don't think anybody deserves
- 1:38:43rape is Punishment. No, it's definitely.
- 1:38:45It's fucked up. What is about to happen to
- 1:38:48Christian has definitely rape. I think everything that happens
- 1:38:51to Christian from here on out. Now is bad, even if he is a bad
- 1:38:55person, he sucks as an individual.
- 1:38:56He doesn't deserve to be raped and killed now, especially not
- 1:39:00the way he's killed. Yes.
- 1:39:01So he takes that and Danny is getting ushered away.
- 1:39:06They go to a dinner table. Whoa, whoa whoa, hold on though.
- 1:39:10Your No, well I didn't past pillai just walking up and
- 1:39:15platinum. Oh yeah, that one honor.
- 1:39:18Now Christian is behind us. The rest of the courgette have
- 1:39:20run to embrace Danny and take a picture and Christian sitting
- 1:39:24off by himself tripping balls. He's freaking out.
- 1:39:27Yeah, he doesn't know what's happening.
- 1:39:30They go to dinner Danny's at the head of the table.
- 1:39:33The table is a lot shorter. Now, I don't know if you
- 1:39:35noticed. There's much fewer people.
- 1:39:37Yeah, it's not even a Rooney more.
- 1:39:39It's just like a lion. Yeah.
- 1:39:42Christian is the only one not wearing white, and he turns to
- 1:39:46the guy next, this old man next to him and he says, what's
- 1:39:48happening in the old man claps it is.
- 1:39:51I love this so much, that is my favorite.
- 1:39:54Like just the fact that this guy knows that he's tripping.
- 1:39:57That's how you fuck with somebody that is on some
- 1:40:00psychedelic. And it's well-acted to buy Jack
- 1:40:03Rader here, because he goes, why did you do that?
- 1:40:08You can hear the fear and confusion in his voice.
- 1:40:11Well, I like the fact that they the way that they interpret that
- 1:40:15to from his perspective like a the clap happens, but it causes
- 1:40:18like Ripples and it's like slow motion.
- 1:40:21I give it something really trippy to him.
- 1:40:23Yeah. So Danny has to go bless the
- 1:40:28crops, the clean rides alone. She has to be in a carriage
- 1:40:31that's being pulled by these other women.
- 1:40:33I feel like the whole thing would go faster.
- 1:40:35If they all just walked, I mean, yeah, it's just a cool visuals.
- 1:40:38Like a fairy tales. Like this right here is straight
- 1:40:40up fairy tale. Women like mythology stuff.
- 1:40:43Yeah. And then everybody else
- 1:40:45wingman's Maya, so she can get some dick.
- 1:40:49Yes. Like they're like laying out a
- 1:40:50flower Trail to Christian like this would be so It's awkward
- 1:40:56for him or for her like for anybody.
- 1:40:59Like you go to your friends remote community in have to fuck
- 1:41:05his little sister and everybody is like guiding you there.
- 1:41:08Yeah. Like everybody's really
- 1:41:09pressuring it and she's also under age and she's underage and
- 1:41:13you're drugged yeah as this is all bad.
- 1:41:16Yeah and like the only like this it's It's a really like weird
- 1:41:23scene, it's fucked up because again, he is drugged, yes, it
- 1:41:27doesn't matter that he willingly took the drugs, you cannot
- 1:41:30consent Under the Influence like this, they also gave him the
- 1:41:33they give them another drug while he's walking in for
- 1:41:35Vitality which is basically like Viagra in like Steam for yeah,
- 1:41:40so he gets forced in there all of the women of the community
- 1:41:45are naked and singing and touching they titties.
- 1:41:48And She's just laying there in the center of the room.
- 1:41:52They unlike this program and they basically like he kind of
- 1:41:56just follows their lead and he goes there and he actually like
- 1:42:00starts to have sex and then it cuts back to Danny.
- 1:42:05She's blessing the crops. Yes, she's finishing that and
- 1:42:08then they're on their way back. As Christian is, I want to point
- 1:42:13out, is this scene finishes up as it transitions away?
- 1:42:19Ruben is Also in the room. Yeah.
- 1:42:22As it transitions away it's like a kind of transparent shot of
- 1:42:25Ruben and his nostril is right over.
- 1:42:28Cushions butthole. That's the real details, right?
- 1:42:35It's artistic. This is an art house film.
- 1:42:39This is what they mean by our house, strategic, but whole
- 1:42:43place. So Danny gets back and she
- 1:42:53supposed to go to sieve, that's like part of the May Queen
- 1:42:56tradition or whatever. And she hears, the sounds coming
- 1:42:59from this other building. She goes.
- 1:43:01What is that? And the girl?
- 1:43:03She's with is like, that is not for you.
- 1:43:05It's Collective moaning because they're all morning along with
- 1:43:08the girl and Danny knows. You can see it in her face.
- 1:43:11She knows what she's gonna go see.
- 1:43:13But she goes and looks anyway. Yeah.
- 1:43:15And she sees What's happening and she throws up and a girl
- 1:43:20walks through the throw up. I saw it.
- 1:43:22I saw you step in that vomit and they all take her back to the
- 1:43:27lake, the building, where the everybody sleeps in, and they
- 1:43:30try to get her into bed, so she can like cry it out and she
- 1:43:34like, is trying to walk away and they won't let her be alone.
- 1:43:37Yeah. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:43:41I do think this is part of a brainwashing tactic.
- 1:43:43Oh, yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:43:44Yeah. But I also think it's incredibly
- 1:43:47powerful, that for the first time in this entire movie, Danny
- 1:43:51has not been expected to handle the weight of all of these
- 1:43:55burdens on her own. Yeah.
- 1:43:57Because from the very first scene when she's calling her
- 1:43:59parents worried about Terry, you know, you get the sense that
- 1:44:02she's the one always trying to keep the family held together.
- 1:44:07Yeah. She doesn't want to burden.
- 1:44:09Ocean with her issues. Every time she has a panic
- 1:44:11attack, she goes off on her own. This is the first time that the
- 1:44:15people, she's with, have just cried with her and looked her in
- 1:44:19the face as she did it. And I want to say to that
- 1:44:22Florence Pugh had like, she had a wonderful time on this film
- 1:44:28and she talked about filming this scene.
- 1:44:30Specifically, she said it was one of the hardest days of
- 1:44:32filming, because they got really raw and emotional all of them
- 1:44:36together, they were all just gross and messy.
- 1:44:39And like, feeding off of everybody's energy.
- 1:44:41I'm sure. Yeah.
- 1:44:42Like, it's a really well active scene from everybody.
- 1:44:44Everybody does their part. Yeah, she said, it's one of the
- 1:44:46most intense change. She's ever filmed.
- 1:44:48I can see it. I mean, it's incredibly
- 1:44:51emotional. But yeah.
- 1:44:54So I feel bad saying about this because of the nature of the
- 1:45:02scene where he is drugged and everything it's kind of however
- 1:45:05you have referred to this in the past as the ultimate post nut
- 1:45:09Clarity is man he finishes and then he's like, oh my God, which
- 1:45:18is fight like this again. Is not consenting, you know,
- 1:45:22it's but he's like, yeah, it's really bad.
- 1:45:26I'm not gonna joke about that but his reaction on screen like
- 1:45:30the way. He like he kind of comically
- 1:45:32runs out of the building. He wasn't things, second he
- 1:45:35ejaculates. It's like he's in a different
- 1:45:37place. Yeah, like he's yeah, he
- 1:45:39finally. Oh, like, he's awakened like
- 1:45:42apparently, like having an orgasm like got rid of all the
- 1:45:47effects of the drugs, he runs out.
- 1:45:50And ye guess what? We get p p in a horror movie and
- 1:45:54PP Arrow here. Fake Mark, I know, but like we
- 1:45:57get daytime PP. Yeah, we've had, there's a lot
- 1:46:00of Today the Equal Rights nudity in this right here, we have
- 1:46:03plenty of Pep and plenty of boobies and even just straight
- 1:46:06up like all forms of genitalia. Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 1:46:11As he's running, he can't, he can't go back to where he just
- 1:46:14came from because. Yeah, my has and they're saying
- 1:46:17how she feels the baby already. That's not how that works.
- 1:46:21They don't emphasize sex at an orca.
- 1:46:23I think she seems she fellows his come inside her.
- 1:46:26No, she says I feel the baby? I think that's what it is.
- 1:46:31Well, she doesn't know the difference, she's yeah, yeah,
- 1:46:34okay, yeah, that's gross. So he can't go to the building
- 1:46:38because Danny's in there crying, and it's not liking me.
- 1:46:40Like, hey, can I squeeze past you to grab my clothes?
- 1:46:45Yeah, that would be awkward he so he runs towards the barn.
- 1:46:52Yeah, and while he's running, he passes Josh's foot just sticking
- 1:46:57out of the ground and the garden.
- 1:46:58And yeah, these any pauses for her.
- 1:47:00Second, when he goes into the barn, he finds Simon in the
- 1:47:04blood eagle. Like his lungs are pulled.
- 1:47:07There is debate about this scene about whether he is alive or
- 1:47:10not. And apparently, there was a
- 1:47:12actual torture technique where people would take their lungs
- 1:47:15and spread it on the body. Yeah, and keep them alive.
- 1:47:18But other people in like I can see it both ways.
- 1:47:21Like, it could be other drugs because throughout this movie
- 1:47:23when they're drugged, you see the environment?
- 1:47:25Just kind of moving like, whenever Danny was there eating
- 1:47:28the food was like, Seeing basically, it was breathing.
- 1:47:32Yeah. So you don't know what to
- 1:47:33believe here. Well, and I think it's also
- 1:47:35worth noting it kind of draws back to the beginning of the
- 1:47:37movie. When Danny is leaving that
- 1:47:40message for her parents, it kind of pans over them in the bed,
- 1:47:43and you can see her parents are still breathing, just a little
- 1:47:46bit. Oh yeah.
- 1:47:47Okay. So they were still alive when
- 1:47:49she called them, but I think I like subtle breathing.
- 1:47:52It was kind of a callback to interesting.
- 1:47:54I could see ya, but while he's looking at this, he gets drugged
- 1:47:58again. Yeah.
- 1:48:00And then he gets woken up. He's in like a little chair
- 1:48:04wheelchair. Yeah.
- 1:48:05And he's finally in some of the horta Garb.
- 1:48:09Yeah. And the, I can't remember her
- 1:48:11name. Oh, she basically walks up to me
- 1:48:14and she's like, hey, you can't move, you can't talk by and then
- 1:48:18just walks away. Yeah, and Danny's up on stage,
- 1:48:23just in like completely enveloped in flowers.
- 1:48:27Yes. So many flowers, iconic.
- 1:48:30Yes. It's amazing.
- 1:48:31I love it so colorful and so what they're doing is, they must
- 1:48:36surrender. Nine Lives is offering for every
- 1:48:39new blood. They're going to dedicate one of
- 1:48:42their own. So for of the new blood were
- 1:48:45brought in. So that is Simon Connie Josh and
- 1:48:48Mark for we're already dedicated to be a part of our to already
- 1:48:57dedicated. So that's the two people that
- 1:48:59jumped from the cliff. To volunteered and that's ingmar
- 1:49:02and Olaf. They basically did like a raffle
- 1:49:06for this exhibition ingmar and off, we're volunteers.
- 1:49:09What was the raffle them? The raffle was for the ninth
- 1:49:12volunteer or as for the ninth sacrifice so it was either going
- 1:49:16to be Christian. Hmm.
- 1:49:19Or it was going to be the person that was brought was chosen
- 1:49:22through Lottery. Okay?
- 1:49:24I got you and the person I wrote down his name is thorbjorn, 3.4
- 1:49:34parent or beard. It's okay for being okay.
- 1:49:42So okay, yeah. So Danny has to choose between
- 1:49:46them and honestly like I know some people think she did this
- 1:49:50out of Revenge and maybe there's a part of that and I think the
- 1:49:53medically it's very important that it shows her cutting off
- 1:49:55those ties. But I Also, like from a
- 1:50:00practical standpoint if she chooses thorbjorn.
- 1:50:04She knows she's gonna die, too. Right?
- 1:50:06Like, I don't know, right? Like what would happen if she
- 1:50:11didn't, would they try and integrate Christian into the
- 1:50:14community? And I don't think so when he
- 1:50:16just be killed either way, like that, that maybe he'll be there
- 1:50:18at that point. Why not?
- 1:50:19Just make it him? Why?
- 1:50:20I like, give the other guy, the option?
- 1:50:22Is it a test for Danny? I can't think it's.
- 1:50:24Yeah. It's like one, one last step to
- 1:50:26get her fully a part of the community.
- 1:50:28Okay, interesting. Ting.
- 1:50:29Yeah, she she chooses Christian and we see them preparing for
- 1:50:34this final ceremony. And so we see the bear being
- 1:50:40like, it's organs being removed and we see Christian getting his
- 1:50:43appendages removed. We see all the bodies being put
- 1:50:49into the Temple. Christian cannot move.
- 1:50:53Like he's had his arms and legs cut off, and we don't see it on
- 1:50:58screen, but we You see the garage as they sent him on to
- 1:51:02the table? Yes, like being wrapped around
- 1:51:04his his ankle and yeah, you're doing.
- 1:51:14The audition is. Yeah.
- 1:51:16So we do know that everybody's getting set up in Mar and ol for
- 1:51:22in there. They're given the snap of the
- 1:51:24yew tree told. There will feel no fear feel no
- 1:51:27pain. They say by Christian, you don't
- 1:51:30get any you. Yeah.
- 1:51:32Oh, and you also see Connie, being wheeled and she was, she
- 1:51:34sacrificed? Yes, she was the river
- 1:51:36sacrifice. Yes.
- 1:51:38So if you only saw the theatrical cut, you never know
- 1:51:40what happened to Connie. You just see her very
- 1:51:43waterlogged, body being brought into the temple.
- 1:51:46Yeah. But it provides context about
- 1:51:48what exactly happened to her. Yes.
- 1:51:51So they're all set up and the fire and the temple is set on
- 1:51:54fire and you see everything burning.
- 1:51:59Christian is burning. And like all you can really see
- 1:52:01is the panic in his eyes. He can't even scream.
- 1:52:04Yeah, he's completely paralyzed. Yeah, and then the Fire Hits
- 1:52:09wolf, has he a name are looking at each other and Olaf starts
- 1:52:13screaming in pain. I can see the fear in ingmar's
- 1:52:16eyes. Yes, freaking out.
- 1:52:18And then outside all of the horror Gus start convulsing and
- 1:52:22screaming as well because they all experienced these things as
- 1:52:25like a whole. Yes.
- 1:52:27And in that moment, Mint like Danny, like.
- 1:52:31She's freaking out to he's freaking out.
- 1:52:33And then she kind of accepts that she's with people that she
- 1:52:36can freak out with. Yes, exactly.
- 1:52:38It's with her. Like, just kind of like smiling.
- 1:52:40Yeah. She's happy.
- 1:52:41Now. She's found her people.
- 1:52:43Yep. And that's the end of the movie,
- 1:52:45that's the end. Okay.
- 1:52:48So wild fucking movie, do you feel any differently having
- 1:52:53discussed it? No, I love it so much.
- 1:52:56Okay, I don't either but I, you know, this actually Ali gave me
- 1:53:00new insight on certain things because like I just we've talked
- 1:53:04about this so many times, I feel like any time we talk about it
- 1:53:06like I'm learning more things about.
- 1:53:07Yeah, there's always new things to catch.
- 1:53:09Always new interpretations to make.
- 1:53:11You know, we've got we've got poor little Bear.
- 1:53:14Is this painting? That's in Danny's room at the
- 1:53:16beginning of the movie in her apartment.
- 1:53:19We've got that hanging in our living room.
- 1:53:22Yes. It's kind of a nod to the
- 1:53:25fairytale like nature of the movie.
- 1:53:27It was really cool watching that on them.
- 1:53:30See Like it was like directly underneath our painting.
- 1:53:32It was amazing. I've got the bear tattoo.
- 1:53:36And what I did was I have the bear in The Flames but it's also
- 1:53:39got the May Queen crowd on as kind of like, a reminder of like
- 1:53:44burn the toxicity, but don't get involved in other toxic shit as
- 1:53:48like a replacement. You know, toxicity comes in all
- 1:53:51forms. People always ask me why I have
- 1:53:54the flower crown on it and once I like that one, yeah, you have
- 1:53:58reasoning behind it. Well, and like, I joke around
- 1:54:01about this a lot, but I feel like it would be so easy to pull
- 1:54:03me into a cult specifically this one, because it's so pretty out
- 1:54:06there. Like, you don't have to deal
- 1:54:08with a Kana me like he's just yeah.
- 1:54:11Like I'm like, I'm like this seems really great.
- 1:54:14And then I have to like remind myself like I can't get rid of
- 1:54:16the toxic shit in my life by going on to other toxic shit.
- 1:54:19So the races also their racist. Okay yeah so I'm still 10 out of
- 1:54:2710. Okay, how does tell you feel
- 1:54:30about this one? Oh are you still 10 out of 10?
- 1:54:33Oh yeah, that's a nice and yes. Okay.
- 1:54:39The beginning of the movie tires, very concerned about the
- 1:54:41crying, every time there was crying careers would go back and
- 1:54:45she was like, very empathetic, she's the opposite of Christian.
- 1:54:49Yes, you cares. When you've jumps Talia.
- 1:54:55Also jumped tell he was. Yeah, she jumped when a murder
- 1:54:59there was. In fact, I think she also has
- 1:55:01some very intense Dreams. Yeah.
- 1:55:02And then, when pilate was given his being held speech, she was
- 1:55:06like, kicking you. Still held by me.
- 1:55:10Do I feel like homes? Hey, hold me right now so I
- 1:55:13think Talia also gives us a 10 out of 10.
- 1:55:15Okay. And Zoe did watch.
- 1:55:19Yes. She was only there for about
- 1:55:20half, but to be fair, that's an hour-and-a-half, which is the
- 1:55:25length of a normal movie. See ya.
- 1:55:26So she's a cat. She has the attention span, she
- 1:55:30has. She has the attention span of a
- 1:55:32cat. Yeah, okay.
- 1:55:35Alright, I'm curious to hear what review you pulled for us.
- 1:55:39Yes, and I will say there is nothing.
- 1:55:40I would change about this movie. Oh I would not change anything
- 1:55:43either. Okay, so I obviously I pulled a
- 1:55:49more negative review, but I wanted to get one that had like
- 1:55:52some different viewpoints than the ones I knew I was going to
- 1:55:54talk about at the beginning of this.
- 1:55:55Okay, so this is from IMDb. It's a user review as four out
- 1:56:00of ten and says not for everybody.
- 1:56:03Let me first say this is not a bad movie, it utilizes creative
- 1:56:06camerawork and cinematography to add to the narrative, but I
- 1:56:09personally still didn't like it. Its main goal in my opinion is
- 1:56:12to disturb the viewers much. As possible through the use of
- 1:56:15sound gory visuals in the feeling of isolation and
- 1:56:17Insanity. While I can see how this can
- 1:56:19speak to a certain audience. It didn't appeal to me and made
- 1:56:22me want to turn the movie, turn off the movie quite a few times.
- 1:56:25If you are into these kinds of films, definitely give this a
- 1:56:27try. But if you like me, enjoy being
- 1:56:29scared by a horror movie, instead of weirded out and
- 1:56:31disturb, this might not be for you.
- 1:56:34You know, I actually appreciate that.
- 1:56:36They recognize that this wasn't a movie for them.
- 1:56:39Yeah. A lot of people just outright
- 1:56:40give like negative feedback for something because it's not what
- 1:56:45they appreciate. Normally like I don't go into,
- 1:56:49like, I don't know. Something that what's up horror?
- 1:56:53Genre that I don't like Full court, but this is folk or well,
- 1:56:58what am I most full most folk? Or you don't?
- 1:57:01Like, I don't go into that and I'm not like this is a shitty
- 1:57:04movie. Like, nobody should like this.
- 1:57:06Like, with the, which I understand why people love that
- 1:57:09movie. It just doesn't appeal to you
- 1:57:11just. Yeah, to me like, I would kind
- 1:57:13of like what that person said. I wanted creepy witch and
- 1:57:17there's not very much of that in that but it has other things
- 1:57:20that terrify people and make people feel unsettled.
- 1:57:23I respect that this movie is very much.
- 1:57:25Same. And I'm just happy that they
- 1:57:27recognize that. Yeah and I mean I will say like
- 1:57:32it's a very atmospheric movie and if you're not pulled into it
- 1:57:35you aren't going to get as much out of it.
- 1:57:38Yeah, it isn't necessarily action-packed.
- 1:57:42It's a bunch of little moments its ass like, it's slow Burn.
- 1:57:45Yeah. It requires you to actually be
- 1:57:48like it's it's immersion. It's, you know, much like what
- 1:57:53you know, I was saying that the student the the students needed
- 1:57:56to be doing like we as an audience member to get as much
- 1:57:59out of it. Yeah, be immersed.
- 1:58:01Okay, so we got a couple of with some reviews here.
- 1:58:05Okay, all right. I will start off with M storm,
- 1:58:13okay? He says, I respect what it's
- 1:58:15done for her but I just don't like it.
- 1:58:18That's fair and I appreciate I can understand people not liking
- 1:58:22I appreciate you recognizing that it's had an impact.
- 1:58:25Yeah I agree. I mean like like I said before
- 1:58:28like it may not be for you but like it can still make an impact
- 1:58:32on horror and it can like influence horror movies in a way
- 1:58:36that you might appreciate a different type of film, you
- 1:58:38know, I can have that impact Michael Lee Howard.
- 1:58:42Okay. He says atmospheric grabs.
- 1:58:44Hold of you and doesn't let go even to the end.
- 1:58:48Antenna often, absolutely agree. This is one of those movies that
- 1:58:51sinks its teeth into my brain. Every time I watch it and
- 1:58:55Incredibly atmospheric I think, like it's, I don't know, just
- 1:59:00the way that it works is like a whole element part of the story.
- 1:59:04Like it's just amazing. It is perfection.
- 1:59:07All right, now we we have Amber. She says stressed and disgusted,
- 1:59:12the whole way until the end with the bear suit.
- 1:59:14Then I loved it interesting too. On it.
- 1:59:18Yeah, it is she said she would be, she said she had a very
- 1:59:22small text box to okay? Have right her view is so she
- 1:59:26said if we need clarification she'll gladly provide it, I told
- 1:59:29her she can if she will. So you know if I have that
- 1:59:34update I will provide that for next week's episode and I get it
- 1:59:38too and you know, maybe I'm extrapolating the wrong things
- 1:59:41from this but it is very stressful up until the end and
- 1:59:44then the bear suit is kind of a cathartic moment for us a not As
- 1:59:48an audience because we've been following Danny's character.
- 1:59:50Yeah. Because I mean, kind of like we
- 1:59:51said with what Arias or said like, you know, you're kind of
- 1:59:54there with her the whole way. There are you rooting for her
- 1:59:56that she's getting the resolution.
- 1:59:58Yeah, she's falling. Like you feel good for her
- 2:00:00there. Yeah.
- 2:00:01But I mean when you think about everything afterwards.
- 2:00:04Yeah. And it becomes even more of a
- 2:00:06horror movie when yeah of why. She, when she comes off the
- 2:00:09drugs, how she's going to feel? She's definitely going to be
- 2:00:12mated with Pelé. Yeah, oh my God, I don't even
- 2:00:15wanna think about that. And All right, and finally we
- 2:00:19have Robert its own. Okay, he says.
- 2:00:22So my favorite thing about Midsummer is how everyone
- 2:00:24interprets it totally wrong, that director literally laughed
- 2:00:27when an interviewer proposed it as a feminist movie.
- 2:00:30He was like, oh, wow, that's how you interpret it.
- 2:00:33Okay, I mean, I think that this movie, I mean, any movie,
- 2:00:39really, like, it opens itself for interpretation.
- 2:00:41I think people can take it. However, it is meant to them,
- 2:00:46like, you can apply your own. Yeah, feelings towards it and
- 2:00:50may not be what the director is going for.
- 2:00:52But I mean, I feel like a lot of media like once you release it
- 2:00:57out there and it has a certain effect on people.
- 2:00:59If people kind of collectively, like take it as a certain thing,
- 2:01:02I got think they can very much, you can have an argument for it
- 2:01:06being that. But, you know, I think I think a
- 2:01:10big part of what people see with that is that scene with all the
- 2:01:13women crying together which is a very powerful moment.
- 2:01:16Yeah, it's two-sided because I Said, it's also, you know, those
- 2:01:20culty brainwashing moment. But I do think it's also
- 2:01:23powerful to see her being lifted up by a group of women.
- 2:01:27It's the first time she's been lifted up and the entire movie.
- 2:01:30Yeah. However, when I think of
- 2:01:33feminist films, this isn't the first one that comes to mind.
- 2:01:37No. Because, I mean, this could
- 2:01:38definitely be like the other way around, too, if you needed to be
- 2:01:41like, yeah, it's swap the roles and swap the genders, and it
- 2:01:43wouldn't make a difference like Danny and could very easily.
- 2:01:48Easily be a man and Christian could be a woman and like you
- 2:01:52can still have that emotional abuse and you can have.
- 2:01:55I also just think that sometimes the bar is so low that if
- 2:01:58something isn't misogynist dick, it's seen as feminist.
- 2:02:02Yeah, which I mean, I don't know.
- 2:02:06Yeah. If you take some like positive
- 2:02:09feminists aspects from it, I don't think that there's
- 2:02:12anything wrong with that. Yeah, I mean does again.
- 2:02:16This is a discussion that we don't necessarily have the space
- 2:02:19for on this podcast today. Yeah, because there's probably a
- 2:02:23lot of deep analysis we could do with it.
- 2:02:26But yeah, I don't get the sense that that was re Esters goal
- 2:02:31with most honest, most likely not.
- 2:02:33But you know, I respect that people may see that in it.
- 2:02:37Yeah, oh no. I definitely see the moments of
- 2:02:40those kind of those interpretations.
- 2:02:43I can see where those come from. But yeah, it's not.
- 2:02:46The first thing that comes to my mind.
- 2:02:48Jesse, who did you relate to? Do you have to think about this?
- 2:02:57Yeah, I related to Danny. Do you know any like say that
- 2:03:01though? It just feels like the obvious
- 2:03:03answer? No.
- 2:03:05Okay. I mean, there's nothing wrong
- 2:03:06with that. I mean if you relate to that
- 2:03:08person, that's that's the game man.
- 2:03:10Yeah, I'll give a good answer. I relate to ingmar because I
- 2:03:16told you of one time like hey there's a bear and my backyard
- 2:03:19and you're like, you're just glossing over the fact that you
- 2:03:22have a bear there. And I'm like, yeah, I live from
- 2:03:25Southeastern Kentucky, like we have Bears here.
- 2:03:29You know, that's a good answer this.
- 2:03:31I mean, it's true. Like I mean, it's just that's a
- 2:03:33bear, that's how it goes. Okay.
- 2:03:37Do we have any dream sequel ideas for this movie?
- 2:03:43I want to say that. It's a perfect movie and doesn't
- 2:03:44need a sequel, but that's cheating at the rules of our own
- 2:03:47game. It is no.
- 2:03:48We need to. I don't care if it's stupid.
- 2:03:51So Danny realizes she fucked up. I want to see her as a mentor
- 2:03:56and her winter. Huh, when she's in her winter
- 2:04:01season from age 54 to 72? Oh, you think she's still there?
- 2:04:04Yeah. Okay.
- 2:04:06I was going to propose that she is.
- 2:04:07Like, it's like a Escape movie. Like, she's trying to break free
- 2:04:11of the cult. I don't know that she would do
- 2:04:13that until she's with the mentor stage.
- 2:04:15Oh yeah. Yeah, she's planned it out.
- 2:04:18Yeah. Like, she has to, like, she's
- 2:04:20there as they're pulling in more new people.
- 2:04:22She pulls somebody aside that she thinks like she sees herself
- 2:04:26and she's like, we need to get out of here.
- 2:04:27Yeah. That kind of thing.
- 2:04:29I can see that. All right.
- 2:04:31Cool. All right.
- 2:04:34Well now we are officially done with this week's episode.
- 2:04:38Okay. Hope everybody enjoyed it.
- 2:04:42Hope everybody is excited for next week's episode because
- 2:04:44guess what? Folks were going 824 again?
- 2:04:46Yeah, eggs gon give it to you, go to?
- 2:04:50Yeah? What less artsy-fartsy, we're
- 2:04:53going with. Ty, West X, I mean, I think
- 2:04:58They're still artsy-fartsy. It is ours and they're still
- 2:05:01slow burn because it's Thai fucking West.
- 2:05:04But it's a slasher and there's a lot of like nudity is it's about
- 2:05:08people making a fucking porno. Yeah.
- 2:05:11You know, like it. We also get peepees next week,
- 2:05:14peepees Galore like a 24 is all about PP.

- 2:05:45I mean, if you haven't watched it, people are going crazy about
- 2:05:48it this year. I think it's when it's going to
- 2:05:50be one of the best horror movies of this year and we're only
- 2:05:52halfway there, but I think it's going to have some yeah,
- 2:05:55anything else that comes out this year has really stiff
- 2:05:57competition already. Do I have by obler less shirt

- 2:06:48Rent this movie watching with it.
- 2:06:50I mean, even if I mean, just, I would recommend it to anybody.
- 2:06:53It's a great movie. I mean, it's a slasher, but it
- 2:06:56is like a deep slasher and it's a no Maj to Texas, Chainsaw
- 2:07:00Massacre and a lot of weight and just exploitation segmentation
- 2:07:03in general. Yeah, it's great.
- 2:07:05It's great. Eight.
- 2:07:07Also, we fully recommend to be as a streaming service to
- 2:07:10everybody. It's free.
