Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: This is Diane Franklin with Movie Meltdown.
- 0:18Speaker 2: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown's Unsung Cinema. I'm
- 0:21Speaker 2: Brian and in this series I welcome guests to discuss
- 0:24Speaker 2: their involvement in the film and entertainment industry and then
- 0:27Speaker 2: we round out the episode talking about a movie that
- 0:29Speaker 2: they enjoy that maybe, when it originally came out, didn't
- 0:32Speaker 2: get the respect that it deserves. And on this episode,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I have not one, but two amazing guests. Sid Heller
- 0:38Speaker 2: and Olivia de Laurentiis are, I'm going to say, renaissance women.
- 0:41Speaker 2: And by that, I don't just mean they love going
- 0:43Speaker 2: to the Ren Faire, which, wait, now that I think
- 0:45Speaker 2: about it, I think they actually do. But in addition
- 0:48Speaker 2: to that, they can do it all. And they do
- 0:50Speaker 2: on a regular basis. Writers, actors, producers, directors. Hell, I
- 0:55Speaker 2: even heard them belt out some amazing songs on the
- 0:57Speaker 2: show a few weeks back. They are content creators in
- 0:59Speaker 2: the best sense of the phrase. And by that I
- 1:02Speaker 2: mean a lot of people put videos out on social media.
- 1:04Speaker 3: A lot.
- 1:05Speaker 2: But here's the difference. When these two post a funny video,
- 1:09Speaker 2: it's actually funny. And that is not the case with
- 1:12Speaker 2: a lot of what is out there on the internet.
- 1:14Speaker 2: But they have been creating these videos for years and
- 1:16Speaker 2: I have consistently been impressed by the original concepts that
- 1:19Speaker 2: they come up with and the ridiculously funny performances that
- 1:22Speaker 2: they deliver every time. And then they started putting together
- 1:25Speaker 2: their own podcast and I realized Not only could they
- 1:27Speaker 2: do all these things, but they could be completely charming
- 1:30Speaker 2: in the process. Also kind of insane. But I mean
- 1:33Speaker 2: that in the best possible way. Seriously, go watch their
- 1:36Speaker 2: show and you'll see insanity at its finest. But all
- 1:39Speaker 2: that aside, this episode we're going to ease our way
- 1:42Speaker 2: in with a little of their journey that led them
- 1:44Speaker 2: to Sid and Olivia Talk Shit. That is the name
- 1:46Speaker 2: of their show, in case you're unaware. And all that
- 1:48Speaker 2: before an extensive and arguably blasphemous discussion of the movie
- 1:52Speaker 2: Christian Ming. Again, if you're familiar with these two, that
- 1:55Speaker 2: movie choice will not be a surprise to you. And
- 1:57Speaker 2: if you're not familiar with the movie or our guests, well,
- 2:00Speaker 2: buckle up because.
- 2:01Speaker 3: We're about to get into it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: We are coming in now. You can hear the wonderful
- 2:10Speaker 2: music by Andrea Davidson playing. So will one or both
- 2:12Speaker 2: of you please tell our illustrious producer to cut the music?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Cut the music!
- 2:18Speaker 2: Thank you. Now it's a party.
- 2:20Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Shut up. We are joined today by Sid and Olivia,
- 2:25Speaker 2: which I'm sure you're familiar with. But if not, I
- 2:27Speaker 2: was going to go back and do at least a
- 2:30Speaker 2: little bit. Okay, it's going to go way back. I've
- 2:33Speaker 2: known about you for a very long time. I don't
- 2:36Speaker 2: know that you want to hear the story. It is adorable.
- 2:40Speaker 2: It's adorable and really ridiculous.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Okay, well, yeah, obviously.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That's way better than like scary and uncomfortable.
- 2:48Speaker 2: No, no, it's just, yeah, it's ridiculous. So I heard
- 2:54Speaker 2: about you from your mom. Wouldn't it be sad if
- 2:58Speaker 2: it was Gail? Would it be really weird if it
- 3:00Speaker 2: was Gail?
- 3:01Speaker 1: It would be weird. I'd be like, I don't understand
- 3:04Speaker 1: how you met this woman, but absolutely.
- 3:07Speaker 2: And I only know that because you brought up her
- 3:08Speaker 2: name on the last episode.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there you go.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Otherwise, I actually didn't know your mom's name, to not
- 3:13Speaker 2: get into creepy. You wouldn't know. But no, this was many,
- 3:19Speaker 2: many years ago. I've been doing this a long, ridiculous
- 3:22Speaker 2: amount of time. And I was at a convention. And again,
- 3:27Speaker 2: if you don't know, her mother is Diane Franklin. And
- 3:30Speaker 2: I'm telling her how The Last American Virgin ruined my life. Right, yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 2: And it's traumatizing. Amazing, but traumatizing.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yeah, that seems to be how it went for everyone.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Seriously, I don't know, jumping ahead to relationships, I don't
- 3:46Speaker 2: know how anyone can have a relationship after watching The
- 3:49Speaker 2: Last American Virgin.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Right, that's fair.
- 3:51Speaker 2: It prepares you for life and how everything's going to go. But, yeah,
- 3:57Speaker 2: I'm just talking to her. And by the end, it's like, hey,
- 4:00Speaker 2: what are you doing with your life now? And she
- 4:03Speaker 2: launched into this pitch of her daughter.
- 4:07Speaker 4: That's very nice.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The amazing. I checked back on it. I was like,
- 4:12Speaker 2: what exactly did she say? You won an award when
- 4:14Speaker 2: you were 12.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Geez, she went that far.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:19Speaker 2: That's what I said. I was like, you'll probably be like, mom.
- 4:23Speaker 1: She's terrible and wonderful.
- 4:25Speaker 2: She was amazing. Yeah. But I thought that was funny
- 4:29Speaker 2: that that's how far back that went. She was pitching your,
- 4:33Speaker 2: your movies that far back. Award-winning films is what I
- 4:37Speaker 2: was told.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So cute.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I love that. But it did stick, even at that point.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So I do remember going back shortly thereafter and finding
- 4:48Speaker 2: the very early version of YouTube videos that you were
- 4:51Speaker 2: putting out. And then I was also like, and who's
- 4:55Speaker 2: the Sid one? Wait a minute. You're both amazing. So
- 4:59Speaker 2: I was very impressed with even the early videos. And
- 5:04Speaker 2: as they've gone on, you guys just continue to get
- 5:06Speaker 2: more impressive and in the comedy itself. And then now
- 5:10Speaker 2: you've- Thank you so much.
- 5:12Speaker 1: That's so nice of you.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You've rolled over into a whole new format. So I
- 5:17Speaker 2: guess that's kind of the easing our way into just
- 5:21Speaker 2: you guys is what led you to doing the skits
- 5:26Speaker 2: more or less and then how it's kind of become
- 5:30Speaker 2: the show that you now have as well. Oh, yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, well, we met in high school and we
- 5:36Speaker 1: both went to college together and we did improv together.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So we decided to make sketches and yeah, kind of
- 5:43Speaker 1: just like started making sketches. Our friends kind of were like,
- 5:46Speaker 1: what is this? This is strange.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:49Speaker 2: That seems about right. Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we kept going because we were like, I don't know.
- 5:54Speaker 1: And then yeah, and then that kind of just led
- 5:56Speaker 1: to making like some web series stuff and some short stuff. And,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and yeah, we have a podcast.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Yeah, we started doing sketches on TikTok because when TikTok
- 6:07Speaker 4: became like a thing during the pandemic, we were like, well,
- 6:09Speaker 4: we could probably like make a sketch that's under one
- 6:13Speaker 4: minute by talking really fast and like truncating it.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And then, uh, we started, I can't imagine you guys
- 6:18Speaker 2: doing that.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. Right.
- 6:20Speaker 4: We, we started doing that more and more.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And then, um, yeah.
- 6:22Speaker 4: And then people were like, you know, I would listen
- 6:25Speaker 4: to a podcast and neither of us know anything about
- 6:28Speaker 4: podcasting or at the time we didn't know anything.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And then, so we, um, we have gone.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Through a couple of different iterations of the podcast, but
- 6:35Speaker 4: we try to just like use it as a jumping
- 6:37Speaker 4: board for like, improv games and like really insane shit.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Oh, can we curse in this? I should have asked that.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I mean, I know who I'm talking to. So yes,
- 6:47Speaker 2: feel free.
- 6:49Speaker 4: But don't go over here.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Oh, you can go all in. You can just lay
- 6:53Speaker 2: into it. Okay. I assume you will make up new
- 6:55Speaker 2: curse words before we're done, but why not?
- 6:58Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I welcome such things.
- 7:00Speaker 3: It's fine.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But no, I guess going in what, um, like that
- 7:04Speaker 2: early on, did you have like, even just the videos, um,
- 7:08Speaker 2: did you have a goal? I'm using air quotes there
- 7:11Speaker 2: as far as like career wise, or was it just,
- 7:15Speaker 2: this is fun. Let's try this.
- 7:17Speaker 4: No, you know, we, we've both always wanted to work
- 7:20Speaker 4: in TV specifically. I loved making movies when I was
- 7:22Speaker 4: in high school. We both made short films and, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 4: the did theaters and did a lot of musical theater
- 7:27Speaker 4: and we both did a bunch of improv. And so
- 7:29Speaker 4: I think, you know, we always had like comedy TV icons, like,
- 7:33Speaker 4: you know, Tina Fey and like the guys from it's
- 7:36Speaker 4: always sunny. And, Just like, you know, Larry David and
- 7:39Speaker 4: a bunch of different people that we were like, oh,
- 7:40Speaker 4: it'd be so cool to eventually do something in this direction.
- 7:44Speaker 4: And so, you know, we've been doing kind of like
- 7:47Speaker 4: TV development stuff as well and like random things that
- 7:51Speaker 4: who knows. But yeah, what's been fun too is like
- 7:56Speaker 4: seeing how YouTube has kind of been reformatting itself as
- 8:00Speaker 4: a place that people can kind of make their own
- 8:02Speaker 4: TV kind of a thing. And that's always, that's like
- 8:06Speaker 4: a cool thing. That we're learning about.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That's what, yeah, I brought that up a few times lately.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's just, it's interesting, this whole, especially YouTube's been around
- 8:15Speaker 2: longer than most things at this point. So, internet anyway.
- 8:19Speaker 2: And they, the internet as a whole has sort of
- 8:22Speaker 2: reset itself every five years. So, even when you start
- 8:26Speaker 2: to get a handle on how things work. It all
- 8:28Speaker 2: goes to hell and a whole new batch of things
- 8:30Speaker 2: shows up and you can't really prepare yourself for what's
- 8:33Speaker 2: about to happen next.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah. And we kind of like escaped the like longer
- 8:37Speaker 1: form videos from YouTube and everybody started being like, no,
- 8:40Speaker 1: it's all about Vine and then TikTok. And then, you know,
- 8:43Speaker 1: it has to be as short as possible. And now
- 8:44Speaker 1: we're all going back to YouTube being really long.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So, you know.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I'm still making my Vine videos.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you got it.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I don't know what to do with them, but I'm
- 8:54Speaker 2: still making them.
- 8:55Speaker 1: You definitely have to make them and they'll go somewhere eventually.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah. You just snip them all together and put them
- 9:02Speaker 2: on YouTube anyway.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And that's fair. And then you get to just binge.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Well, as we're heading towards movies, I know this is
- 9:11Speaker 2: one that I'm just interested in just for my own, like,
- 9:16Speaker 2: sick purposes because I don't want to do this, but
- 9:18Speaker 2: occasionally on the show, you will mention going to auditions
- 9:22Speaker 2: and that, I guess, performance wise. I mean, I know you're,
- 9:26Speaker 2: you're still writing a lot of stuff as well, but the,
- 9:29Speaker 2: the auditions for the acting jobs is just fascinating to me.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So if you don't want to name specific, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 2: projects and or people involved, but are your, are there
- 9:38Speaker 2: any special stories from that process?
- 9:43Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah. Um, I mean, everything is a self-tape now, mostly.
- 9:48Speaker 1: They hardly ever are like, you should come into my
- 9:51Speaker 1: space and come in person.
- 9:52Speaker 2: That's probably better, actually.
- 9:55Speaker 1: It is and it isn't because you're like, I'm sending
- 9:58Speaker 1: a video that I know someone will watch this. slate
- 10:00Speaker 1: and go not right and just like immediately like yeah.
- 10:03Speaker 4: I'm gonna do 18 takes until it's perfect and then
- 10:05Speaker 4: someone's just gonna be like now we already know who's
- 10:07Speaker 4: it yeah like.
- 10:09Speaker 2: 12 seconds in they're like next i'm.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah, they're like, just not the right chin.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, like, okay.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Um, but I had a self tape once for a
- 10:18Speaker 1: horror movie. I don't know what the movie ended up being.
- 10:22Speaker 1: But my character that I had to audition for was
- 10:26Speaker 1: a girl who gets killed while giving road head. And
- 10:32Speaker 1: I had to do for the audition is come up
- 10:36Speaker 1: from giving head and then scream and die. So in
- 10:40Speaker 1: my slate, I just said, hi, my name is Sydney Heller,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and I was born for this role. And I did
- 10:44Speaker 1: not get it. It's awesome.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Well, that's just, what is wrong with them? I mean,
- 10:48Speaker 2: born for this role, what the hell?
- 10:51Speaker 4: They both got an audition for girl who pees on
- 10:54Speaker 4: someone in a party and then overdoses and dies.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And that was Babylon. Yeah, that was Babylon.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Hey, this is big money there. I mean, that's a
- 11:02Speaker 2: for real movie. Hold on.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Here's the thing. If you're the girl who pees on
- 11:06Speaker 1: the guy and then overdoses, babble on let me know
- 11:09Speaker 1: what you made and probably just a normal day rate.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Oh i'm sure but the project itself i mean that's
- 11:15Speaker 2: an epic scale of debauchery there absolutely.
- 11:18Speaker 1: It's always fun that you can be you can be
- 11:21Speaker 1: a person who just like pees on someone and then
- 11:24Speaker 1: overdoses in a movie and get paid like as much
- 11:27Speaker 1: as you would get as a nanny.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Less than you would get to pee on someone and
- 11:30Speaker 4: overdose in real life that's correct yeah most definitely yeah
- 11:34Speaker 4: pays crazy.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah it is a weird world that we live in.
- 11:39Speaker 2: It is.
- 11:40Speaker 1: It's the weirdest. It's the weirdest one I know about.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Well, that's, yeah, I guess anything else as far as
- 11:45Speaker 2: industry wise, what, what you've seen moving into the podcast version?
- 11:50Speaker 2: I mean, was it something that you had a specific,
- 11:53Speaker 2: I mean, you said it's, it's morphed a little over
- 11:55Speaker 2: the years, but was there, what's kind of the, the
- 11:58Speaker 2: best thing that you've found as far as like switching
- 12:00Speaker 2: into the, I guess it's a sit down talk show sometimes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I mean, I think like the biggest thing is just
- 12:11Speaker 1: it's fun to have something that feels casual, that feels
- 12:14Speaker 1: like it doesn't need to be. 100% mapped out ahead
- 12:18Speaker 1: of time, especially since we always have like 1000 other
- 12:22Speaker 1: things that we're just kind of doing. So it just
- 12:24Speaker 1: like makes it a little bit easier. And then also,
- 12:26Speaker 1: you know, we get to go back to kind of
- 12:28Speaker 1: our roots, which is just improv and do kind of
- 12:30Speaker 1: improv games, which is like one of those things you
- 12:32Speaker 1: kind of can't get paid for in real life. So
- 12:34Speaker 1: fitting it into a job is a pretty nice thing.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's been fun to be like, okay, this
- 12:39Speaker 4: is a consistent thing we can do. while we're doing
- 12:42Speaker 4: all the other things that we're doing that like, you can't,
- 12:45Speaker 4: you know, be like, Oh, here's a clip of this
- 12:46Speaker 4: every week. Um, so yeah, that's been fun. And it's
- 12:50Speaker 4: just been fun to meet. Like we've had, I have
- 12:53Speaker 4: no idea how we had some of the guests we've had,
- 12:55Speaker 4: but we've had some really fun guests and, um, yeah,
- 12:59Speaker 4: that's been awesome.
- 13:00Speaker 1: We get to have our friends on, which is just like, yeah. Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 4: And the audience on, on like the Patreon and everything is,
- 13:06Speaker 4: is really cool and wonderful.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yeah. You, you've got an amazing fan base. I, As
- 13:12Speaker 2: I was telling you earlier, I was watching the one
- 13:13Speaker 2: from earlier today, and the story that they wrote, not
- 13:16Speaker 2: just for you, but about you, that was amazing writing. Like,
- 13:21Speaker 2: that was pretty impressive.
- 13:21Speaker 1: That was impressive. Yeah, no, it was awesome. Yeah, one
- 13:24Speaker 1: of our patrons wrote us a very long fan fiction
- 13:27Speaker 1: about us and also gave us a warning ahead of
- 13:30Speaker 1: time of like, hey, just so you know, this is
- 13:33Speaker 1: such an uncomfortable fan fiction. It's uncomfortable on purpose. If
- 13:36Speaker 1: you don't want to read it to your audience, that
- 13:39Speaker 1: is so fine. And I was like, the fact that
- 13:41Speaker 1: you did this is not only so funny, but also
- 13:43Speaker 1: so kind that you gave us a warning of like, Hey,
- 13:46Speaker 1: if this is something you don't even love, that's all good.
- 13:48Speaker 4: He wrote us a letter and ended it with, I mean,
- 13:50Speaker 4: you no harm, love Krista.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And I was like, that's the, that's my email sign
- 13:54Speaker 1: off for now. Yeah. So it was just kind of
- 13:55Speaker 1: one of those things where you're like, oh, it's the
- 13:57Speaker 1: best of both worlds.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Like somebody who's like sick and twisted in the same
- 14:00Speaker 1: way as us, but also like is nice.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 2: It's like, yeah. It's self-aware. Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 4: We write each other fan fictions all the time. And
- 14:07Speaker 4: we've written fan fictions for like, like people we knew
- 14:11Speaker 4: in our lives who, didn't expect or want a really long.
- 14:15Speaker 1: It's an uncomfortable thing to receive. Yeah.
- 14:17Speaker 4: It's like, so we kind of do that as like
- 14:19Speaker 4: a bit that we do to each other on like
- 14:21Speaker 4: holidays or like we've done it to other people, maybe
- 14:24Speaker 4: potentially against their will, definitely without their knowledge. And then
- 14:28Speaker 4: we've read it to them and it's, we think that's
- 14:31Speaker 4: a really insane, fun thing to do.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's a love letter. It's like such a, it's such
- 14:35Speaker 1: a beautiful love language.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 4: We spent so much time thinking about And then, yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 4: and then we've gotten a couple from our people kind
- 14:45Speaker 4: of within the same tone and within the same like.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Always so flattering. Yeah, it's hilarious. And just silly. Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 2: It is impressive. That's what I've seen with a lot
- 14:54Speaker 2: of fan bases out there is there are a lot
- 14:55Speaker 2: of super talented people that aren't. really doing their own thing.
- 15:00Speaker 2: And somehow it's okay to just like latch onto this
- 15:02Speaker 2: and be like, well, this is encouraging me to do
- 15:04Speaker 2: my thing. So it like, it still kind of works,
- 15:07Speaker 2: you know? Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And even like the other thing too, is it's like,
- 15:10Speaker 1: even whatever their creative pursuits are, like outside of this,
- 15:14Speaker 1: it's like a place where they get to put their
- 15:17Speaker 1: junk brains. Like, yeah, like we like to write things
- 15:20Speaker 1: that are just not for anything, only to make each
- 15:23Speaker 1: other laugh. And it's like where you get to like
- 15:25Speaker 1: load off all your junk from your brain and then
- 15:27Speaker 1: you have the energy to do the real stuff.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Yeah, there's some really like there's some people on that
- 15:31Speaker 4: Patreon that have like really cool art pages and they're
- 15:34Speaker 4: just like really cool like artists or writers. And it's
- 15:37Speaker 4: just like a fun group of of funny, smart weirdos.
- 15:40Speaker 4: And I say weirdos as only a positive.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, that's that's that. It's the only people I
- 15:46Speaker 2: look for at this point.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I don't want any non-weirdos anywhere near me.
- 15:49Speaker 2: You're not a weirdo. What are you doing? I mean,
- 15:52Speaker 2: wasting your life.
- 15:53Speaker 4: You're staying far away from me is what you're doing.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously. Well, you did. Yeah, you went into the
- 15:59Speaker 2: Patreon a little bit. I did. The crossover we had
- 16:02Speaker 2: here was once I saw you were also doing movie nights.
- 16:05Speaker 2: So that, I mean, again, hanging out, you know, slumber
- 16:10Speaker 2: party at your house, watching a movie all night.
- 16:11Speaker 1: That's, that's.
- 16:13Speaker 2: The way to go. So what has it been as
- 16:15Speaker 2: far as the movie night approach lately?
- 16:19Speaker 1: It's been so fun. Yeah, it's been really fun. We
- 16:21Speaker 1: basically stream for our Patreon usually once a month a
- 16:26Speaker 1: hate watch of something. And like a hate watch to
- 16:29Speaker 1: me is one of my most beloved watches.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it's the watch I put the most love into
- 16:34Speaker 4: a hate watch.
- 16:34Speaker 2: I agree.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Like my favorite movies are some of the worst movies. Yeah.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And I think that that's how it should be. And
- 16:42Speaker 1: so we have our patrons will like watch with us
- 16:45Speaker 1: and then in discord they can just like kind of
- 16:47Speaker 1: heckle the movie and then we all kind of chat
- 16:50Speaker 1: together and hang out and it's just fun.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Yeah, there's something so delightful and special about a movie
- 16:55Speaker 4: that's just like so weird and bad in certain ways
- 16:59Speaker 4: or like just wrong in certain ways and It's such
- 17:02Speaker 4: a great thing to bond over.
- 17:04Speaker 1: It's so fun. And they've pitched some really good ones.
- 17:06Speaker 1: They are really good at it.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Because we've always loved that kind of thing. But the
- 17:10Speaker 4: fact that we've learned about so many more terrifying movies
- 17:14Speaker 4: from them.
- 17:16Speaker 1: We watched Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey. Yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I'm familiar with it. I've avoided it so far, but yeah.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you should. You should avoid it. I
- 17:25Speaker 1: honestly recommend an avoid on that. We watched Love on
- 17:28Speaker 1: a Leash, which doesn't have any music.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Definitely watch that one.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Because I think the director got hit by a bus.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Before the sound mixing.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And couldn't finish it.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Music is expensive. You know, you can't afford everything.
- 17:41Speaker 1: The whole background noise cuts out.
- 17:44Speaker 4: So it'll be like shots with like no sound at all.
- 17:47Speaker 4: And then like background noise really loud.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And then it cuts out. And awesome. And it is
- 17:51Speaker 1: about a woman falling in love with her dog, but
- 17:53Speaker 1: you know, they have a sexual relationship and he's a
- 17:55Speaker 1: golden retriever that turns into a man.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:57Speaker 1: And then when he's a man, he has a different
- 17:59Speaker 1: voice than when he's the dog. We know the guy
- 18:01Speaker 1: who voiced the dog.
- 18:02Speaker 4: And when he turns into a man, he's a different
- 18:04Speaker 4: actor with a different voice.
- 18:06Speaker 1: He didn't book that part.
- 18:07Speaker 4: No, he just booked dog voice part.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And that is also awesome. just a wild, like, why
- 18:13Speaker 1: would you do it that way? That's like my dream
- 18:15Speaker 1: is to like have an in memoriam that is only
- 18:17Speaker 1: the worst performances in the worst things. Like I would
- 18:20Speaker 1: love that.
- 18:21Speaker 4: We also, one of the movies we watched for movie
- 18:23Speaker 4: night was a movie that we were a famously bad
- 18:26Speaker 4: recent movie that we were in and then got cut from,
- 18:29Speaker 4: which was the ice cube war of the world movie.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I think, yeah, I remember you talking about that one. Um, yeah,
- 18:36Speaker 2: that that's another one of those that, the approach they
- 18:39Speaker 2: took towards making a movie was different than what a
- 18:42Speaker 2: lot of people were looking for. And I don't think
- 18:45Speaker 2: they were prepared for it. Were you prepared for your,
- 18:48Speaker 2: your starring roles in there that didn't quite pan out,
- 18:51Speaker 2: I suppose.
- 18:52Speaker 4: You know, we, I think we knew, well, first off,
- 18:58Speaker 4: we filmed it at the beginning of the pandemic. And
- 19:00Speaker 4: when it came out, we were both shocked because we
- 19:03Speaker 4: both thought it was never going to come out.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:05Speaker 1: It was filmed like years before.
- 19:07Speaker 4: And, Um, I think I either expected or knew that
- 19:12Speaker 4: we weren't. I was like, there's no way.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Yeah, knowing how life is, we thought that we would
- 19:16Speaker 1: be cut. But also, I'm so disappointed we were because again,
- 19:19Speaker 1: the goal is to have a bunch of bad performances
- 19:21Speaker 1: from bad movies on the resume.
- 19:23Speaker 4: The biggest reason that we're bummed that we were cut
- 19:25Speaker 4: is because our scene was supposed to end with them
- 19:27Speaker 4: digitally exploding our heads. And I would love to have
- 19:30Speaker 4: that footage. But maybe just another time.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And they asked us, they were like, hey, do you
- 19:36Speaker 1: guys have a leaf blower you could use at your house?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Do I? Hold on.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And we were like, aren't you from Universal Studios? So
- 19:46Speaker 1: that was awesome.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Again, I can't afford everything.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Leaf.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Lures are pricey, man. I mean, you know.
- 19:53Speaker 4: We had another person in the room... with a leaf
- 19:56Speaker 4: blower waiting for a cue. Like not, not someone who
- 19:58Speaker 4: was working on the movie. Like my boyfriend at the
- 20:01Speaker 4: time was just there on his phone holding a leaf blower.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And then when it hit a certain line, he would
- 20:05Speaker 4: just blow us in the face with a leaf blower.
- 20:07Speaker 1: That was pretty awesome. It was.
- 20:09Speaker 2: That's, that's epic if it's an indie film, but yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 2: for what this was, that's kind of a really sad
- 20:16Speaker 2: story for them.
- 20:17Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, no, it's perfect. It's, it kind of
- 20:21Speaker 1: ended up exactly how it should have.
- 20:22Speaker 2: No, no, it's, That's the thing. I've seen a lot
- 20:26Speaker 2: of ridiculous movies over the years. And just when I
- 20:29Speaker 2: think that's when I know it's bad, because I at
- 20:31Speaker 2: least even if I haven't watched them, I at least
- 20:33Speaker 2: know about them. I saw them on the video shelf
- 20:35Speaker 2: back in the day. Like I know of them at
- 20:38Speaker 2: least by reputation, usually. So when I hear people talk
- 20:42Speaker 2: about one and I'm like, wait. what the hell is this?
- 20:45Speaker 2: The fact that you're still unearthing like the weirdest stuff
- 20:49Speaker 2: that is out there that, that, that's, I think that's
- 20:51Speaker 2: what keeps me going at this point is like knowing
- 20:54Speaker 2: there's more weird movies just waiting for us to dig into.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Absolutely. They'll, they'll always be a new one too.
- 21:02Speaker 2: They just, they keep, they keep making them, which kind
- 21:05Speaker 2: of leads us to our, our focus today. So I'll
- 21:09Speaker 2: usually read the specifics here and then we can launch
- 21:12Speaker 2: into it. So, Our unsung cinema feature is Christian Mingle.
- 21:18Speaker 2: The year is 2014. The director is Corbin Bernson, which
- 21:22Speaker 2: we'll have to get back to. And the plot, according
- 21:25Speaker 2: to IMDb, a marketing executive tries to find Mr. Right
- 21:29Speaker 2: on a Christian dating website. When impressing her dream guy
- 21:33Speaker 2: ends in disaster, Gwyneth gets in touch with her spiritual side. So,
- 21:39Speaker 2: spoiler alert, we're going to ruin the hell out of this.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I assume you've already watched it before you come to this,
- 21:44Speaker 2: but if not, hey, fair warning. Also, and I don't
- 21:49Speaker 2: want to speak for you too, but extra little religious
- 21:53Speaker 2: tone alert, because I'm guessing we're probably not too far
- 21:58Speaker 2: off on how we feel about the religious aspects of this,
- 22:01Speaker 2: but I'm going to have some aspects where I, Just
- 22:06Speaker 2: in life in general now, I'm not anti-religion. I just
- 22:09Speaker 2: have a lot of questions. And usually me asking people
- 22:12Speaker 2: questions about their religious practices and their goings on makes
- 22:16Speaker 2: them uncomfortable. So just fair warning for people listening. If
- 22:20Speaker 2: you're going to clutch your pearls, I'm giving you a
- 22:23Speaker 2: heads up right now.
- 22:24Speaker 1: And the good thing, too, is it's not even about Christianity.
- 22:27Speaker 1: It's about Christian Mingle, the dating site. It's a very
- 22:30Speaker 1: different thing.
- 22:31Speaker 4: It's very different.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And it's awesome.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And kind of wrong sometimes, but we can get into that.
- 22:37Speaker 2: So I think my first question, usually with any of
- 22:40Speaker 2: these specific ones, I will ask the guest, and even
- 22:43Speaker 2: more so this time, why this movie?
- 22:48Speaker 1: Totally.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Hey, should be obvious.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yes, kind of. But at the same time, how ironic
- 22:55Speaker 2: is it versus how much do you kind of for
- 22:57Speaker 2: real love it?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Well, I for real love it. Um, in a way
- 23:02Speaker 1: that I recognize it's a bad movie, but I have
- 23:05Speaker 1: genuine love toward it in the way that I feel
- 23:08Speaker 1: about so many things. I can't count the amount of
- 23:10Speaker 1: times I've watched this movie. I've watched this movie probably
- 23:13Speaker 1: more than any movie. Yeah. I've watched this movie so
- 23:16Speaker 1: many times. Yeah. Uh, it just was like, we found
- 23:19Speaker 1: it probably in, you know, 2010. 18, 2017 or something. Yeah.
- 23:28Speaker 4: And our first thought was like, wait, is this a
- 23:30Speaker 4: movie called Christian Mingle?
- 23:32Speaker 1: What? And then we were like, is this an ad
- 23:34Speaker 1: for Christian Mingle that's two hours long? And the answer
- 23:36Speaker 1: is yes.
- 23:38Speaker 4: And we were like, wait, is that starring Gretchen from
- 23:40Speaker 4: Mean Girls?
- 23:41Speaker 1: And the answer is yes.
- 23:42Speaker 4: So we were like, okay, well, yeah yeah got it
- 23:45Speaker 4: we gotta watch this um and it's excellent it's everything
- 23:48Speaker 4: you want it to be it is there's uh pretty
- 23:51Speaker 4: much like the things you want out of like a
- 23:54Speaker 4: movie about dating are your you want to see things
- 23:57Speaker 4: go wrong you want to see like all the weird
- 24:00Speaker 4: dates you have all the different guys meet mr right
- 24:03Speaker 4: and in this one she just meets mr right right
- 24:05Speaker 4: away everything's fine Um, it's awesome. Yeah, there's, um, it's, it's,
- 24:12Speaker 4: it's just, it's just perfect. Yeah, we have, we've had, we've,
- 24:15Speaker 4: we forced so many people to watch this movie with us.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And then so we've watched it over and over again.
- 24:19Speaker 4: And it just also another thing that's really important about
- 24:23Speaker 4: it that I think is really, really good that we
- 24:25Speaker 4: don't see enough.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Is it has between 19.
- 24:28Speaker 4: And 34 endings yeah um it ends like 500 times it.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Really does just kind of continue when you're like okay
- 24:36Speaker 2: now we're oh no here we go so yeah yeah the.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Whole last like third of the movie is like oh
- 24:41Speaker 4: is this oh wow okay.
- 24:43Speaker 1: The movie's a prank it feels like a prank.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yeah and i love it a genuinely good prank yeah
- 24:49Speaker 4: and there's some really good quotes from it we we
- 24:51Speaker 4: um Well, I don't know. I don't know if you
- 24:55Speaker 4: if you're going to go through it like kind of
- 24:56Speaker 4: beat by.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Beat or if you want to tell us.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I mean, it's up to you guys. I definitely was.
- 25:01Speaker 2: I kind of tried to again. I've watched it multiple
- 25:03Speaker 2: times now. So thank you because I was I was
- 25:06Speaker 2: familiar with it, mostly from you talking about it in
- 25:09Speaker 2: the past on the show. But now digging into it,
- 25:13Speaker 2: I'm like, well, I'm not going into this half-assed. Like
- 25:15Speaker 2: I'm all in. So again, I was up in like
- 25:18Speaker 2: three this morning watching it again. Just one more final preparation.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a great time.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Yeah, because my brain's not quite right at that point anyway.
- 25:28Speaker 2: So I'm like, this is all starting to make sense now.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Hold on. This is perfect.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Probably when it was written.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Also when there was a year or so where we
- 25:37Speaker 4: couldn't find it anywhere. It was like on some streaming
- 25:40Speaker 4: platform and then it got taken down. And then we
- 25:42Speaker 4: really wanted to show someone, but we couldn't find it.
- 25:45Speaker 4: And so we, we found this website called Pure Flix.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like, Oh yeah. Like familiar with them. Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yeah. And we were like, Oh, okay.
- 25:54Speaker 4: We'll get a free trial of Pure Flix and then
- 25:56Speaker 4: we'll watch Christian Mingle and then we'll cancel it.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Well, actually Olivia was like, you should get a free
- 26:00Speaker 1: trial and then you can, we can watch it and
- 26:03Speaker 1: then you can cancel it. And she was like, it'll
- 26:04Speaker 1: be so easy. I was like, great. So we made
- 26:06Speaker 1: an account called PurePureSid and then they wouldn't let me
- 26:10Speaker 1: cancel my account for months. And I was just paying
- 26:13Speaker 1: for PureFlix for months.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Because you needed to be saved, obviously.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And they would like, and then once I finally did
- 26:20Speaker 1: get to cancel it. We had to call Roku and
- 26:22Speaker 1: be like, cut the card. Once I finally got to
- 26:25Speaker 1: cancel it, I got emails that were like, PurePureSid, please
- 26:28Speaker 1: come back. We have so many pure films for you
- 26:30Speaker 1: to watch. And like Julia and Julia. And I was like, what?
- 26:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:34Speaker 4: But she got so many begging emails being like, pure,
- 26:37Speaker 4: pure Sid, please return.
- 26:38Speaker 1: And that was awesome.
- 26:39Speaker 4: We love that.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I mean, in a way, I can almost see you like,
- 26:42Speaker 2: and I'm watching it today. Because I'm like, if for
- 26:44Speaker 2: no other reason, just I feel like endless material would
- 26:47Speaker 2: be delivered to you. Like, oh, look, they uploaded a
- 26:50Speaker 2: new one. Oh, God, we're going to have to watch this,
- 26:52Speaker 2: aren't we?
- 26:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is. If we ever get a free
- 26:56Speaker 4: Pure Flix subscription, we're going to have so many more
- 26:59Speaker 4: things to talk about.
- 27:00Speaker 1: For life.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I mean, if you give them enough plugs, maybe they'll
- 27:04Speaker 2: just be like, OK, I mean, you're kind of being
- 27:06Speaker 2: mean about it. But at the same time, we don't
- 27:07Speaker 2: get a lot of promotion.
- 27:08Speaker 1: So, OK. All publicity is good publicity.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 27:13Speaker 4: They can make a whole ad campaign that's like even
- 27:15Speaker 4: sinners love it.
- 27:17Speaker 2: These people are all going to hell and they love
- 27:20Speaker 2: this movie.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:22Speaker 2: So, yeah, that was my point, more or less, was
- 27:25Speaker 2: I made many notes as I went through kind of.
- 27:29Speaker 2: in the order of this movie happening in front of us,
- 27:32Speaker 2: but we can feel free to jump around. And so
- 27:35Speaker 2: you don't forget something really important. You want to say,
- 27:37Speaker 2: feel free to throw it out there whenever, but I guess,
- 27:41Speaker 2: you know, we all have stories to tell. Do you
- 27:45Speaker 2: like her very serious voiceover that guides us through this tale?
- 27:49Speaker 4: The monologue about driftwood.
- 27:53Speaker 2: That's the part that every time I watched it, when
- 27:56Speaker 2: she said, Help me find my driftwood. I laughed out loud.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I didn't plan on it. But even 3.30 this morning
- 28:03Speaker 2: when she said it, I was like, oh, sorry. So
- 28:06Speaker 2: help me find my driftwood is just.
- 28:09Speaker 1: God can come to you even as a piece of driftwood.
- 28:11Speaker 1: And you're like, what? Yeah, it's awesome.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Yeah, it starts with a very serious voiceover about driftwood.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I mean, she's a star.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Yeah. That's the thing. I mean, as much as I
- 28:24Speaker 2: will have issues with the movie as a whole, watching
- 28:27Speaker 2: it again, I'm like, you know, Lacey is doing her best.
- 28:30Speaker 1: No, she's a star. It's kind of undeniable. I mean,
- 28:33Speaker 1: she's become a Hallmark sweetheart in a deserving way. Absolutely.
- 28:38Speaker 1: She is a Hallmark sweetheart.
- 28:40Speaker 2: But, but she's, I mean, again, she's been in real movies,
- 28:43Speaker 2: no offense to these movies, but she's been in real movies.
- 28:46Speaker 2: So like you're, you're watching her and you see up
- 28:48Speaker 2: against some of the other, which granted there are some
- 28:50Speaker 2: pretty impressive actors in this surprisingly, but you look at
- 28:54Speaker 2: some of the other people that are just kind of
- 28:55Speaker 2: there and this is the level of movie they've always done.
- 28:59Speaker 2: And then they cut to her for a closeup and
- 29:00Speaker 2: you're like, no, look, she's knocking it out of the park.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Like she, she knows what she's doing. She's been doing
- 29:05Speaker 2: it since she was a kid.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Like, Yeah. No, she's best. She's giving it her all
- 29:09Speaker 1: and you can tell, and she's doing a good job. Yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 2: And, and selling what is some pretty bad dialogue. Cause
- 29:17Speaker 2: there are moments when I'm like, Oh, this, this poor woman, like,
- 29:21Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know how you made it
- 29:23Speaker 2: this far in life. Really? If this is what's coming
- 29:25Speaker 2: out of your mouth all day long, I really, how
- 29:28Speaker 2: do you, how do you dress yourself? Which is also
- 29:30Speaker 2: questionable later, but, Yeah, I don't know. It's some weird
- 29:35Speaker 2: dialogue that they throw in the middle of this, but
- 29:37Speaker 2: but she does what she can.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Could have been so much worse so we.
- 29:42Speaker 2: We do you get your get your dream you get
- 29:44Speaker 2: one bad date and it is i mean i am
- 29:48Speaker 2: watching this going yeah this stinky cheese comment this is
- 29:51Speaker 2: you're you're already down the wrong road man what are
- 29:54Speaker 2: you doing like I guess we've been in that spot before.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Yeah, he's like, he's like, just like a caricature of like,
- 30:04Speaker 4: I'm a business guy who doesn't like God. And therefore,
- 30:07Speaker 4: I'm going to say some like, I'm going to like
- 30:09Speaker 4: look at other girls in the bar. And I think
- 30:11Speaker 4: she like he stops listening to her. And so she
- 30:14Speaker 4: starts saying something. just stuff to like make him remember
- 30:19Speaker 4: that they're on a date and uh and then he's
- 30:21Speaker 4: like oh that's my friend from high school but then
- 30:22Speaker 4: he hugs if my memory serves me correctly a much
- 30:25Speaker 4: younger looking girl yeah.
- 30:26Speaker 2: So that's good well she even calls it out that
- 30:28Speaker 2: like the one that's half his age that he went
- 30:30Speaker 2: to school and and what is wrong with this guy
- 30:35Speaker 2: like again you're sitting across from lacy and you're looking
- 30:38Speaker 2: at other random women like come on man get it
- 30:40Speaker 2: together so Yeah, this guy's an idiot anyway. Stop it.
- 30:44Speaker 1: This guy is not the guy you date, Lacey.
- 30:46Speaker 3: No, no.
- 30:47Speaker 2: You should have already been out of there by that point.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Jeez.
- 30:51Speaker 2: So she doesn't want to be the last one standing.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that whole thing.
- 30:56Speaker 2: The terminology you throw around with your friends. You don't
- 30:58Speaker 2: want to be the last one standing.
- 31:00Speaker 4: That's how women talk.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 31:03Speaker 4: All your friends get married and you go like, oh,
- 31:05Speaker 4: I'm behind because I have to be married because that's
- 31:08Speaker 4: the rule.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I'm also going to focus, this is notorious on any
- 31:12Speaker 2: time I'm on a show, sometimes my other co-hosts are like, really?
- 31:15Speaker 2: This is what you're focusing on? So I will ask
- 31:18Speaker 2: many stupid questions about just life in this universe where
- 31:21Speaker 2: this movie takes place. So my next thing is riding
- 31:25Speaker 2: your bike to work. You guys do that all the time, right?
- 31:27Speaker 2: Just always riding, show up to work just sweaty and
- 31:31Speaker 2: gross and just be like, ready to start my day.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I feel like that only happens in movies.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Yeah, the bike riding thing is not a convenient way
- 31:43Speaker 1: to travel when you have a bunch of stuff and
- 31:46Speaker 1: people bring stuff to work.
- 31:48Speaker 2: She has boots for God's sake. Is she riding in those? Like, no,
- 31:51Speaker 2: they're in the basket. They're in the old lady basket
- 31:54Speaker 2: up front.
- 31:54Speaker 1: She keeps her boots there. She wears like some sort
- 31:57Speaker 1: of crochet hat sometimes. Yeah. What is that?
- 32:02Speaker 2: A lot of times, by the way. Yeah. I have
- 32:05Speaker 2: a note that's like, she is rocking that hat every day.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Like she loves those hats.
- 32:11Speaker 1: A costume designer from like Hannah Montana. And they were like,
- 32:14Speaker 1: do your thing queen. And yeah, I love it.
- 32:18Speaker 2: It's, it's a look and she is, she is in
- 32:21Speaker 2: on it.
- 32:22Speaker 4: She looks great.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I mean, the thing about it is like, the more
- 32:25Speaker 1: I think about it, this movie could have been so
- 32:27Speaker 1: bad without her. And I, I like, she really does
- 32:31Speaker 1: so much for this movie. They needed her so badly.
- 32:33Speaker 2: There are moments when I'm looking at it going, all right,
- 32:35Speaker 2: this is not badly done. And then sometimes I'm just
- 32:38Speaker 2: a lot of times looking at like the set and
- 32:40Speaker 2: I'm like, you guys put a couple of minutes of
- 32:43Speaker 2: work into putting this room together. So it does have furniture,
- 32:47Speaker 2: but like it feels so artificial, which I mean, it
- 32:51Speaker 2: kind of is. But in bigger movies, somehow that goes away.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Where in these, I'm just like, why is that corkboard
- 32:58Speaker 2: behind you not have anything on it?
- 33:01Speaker 4: Sometimes there's just no ideas at the office.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Well, in that office, I believe it.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Cause that is, that's the whole subplot.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I mean, thank goodness. Steven Tobolowsky is there. Cause I
- 33:11Speaker 2: do love that guy, but I don't know how much
- 33:14Speaker 2: he's going to save this office.
- 33:15Speaker 4: Cause yeah, No, I just hope he had a fun
- 33:18Speaker 4: time on the day.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I hope he made some good money. Yeah.
- 33:21Speaker 2: He's logged in his time, man. He has done a
- 33:23Speaker 2: lot of movies over the years. So when he showed up,
- 33:26Speaker 2: I was like, of course, Stephen's here.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Of course.
- 33:30Speaker 2: So we also get our commercial. So it is just,
- 33:32Speaker 2: it pauses long enough to throw the commercial right at you.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So I'm assuming a decent amount of money was thrown
- 33:39Speaker 2: at him. Just, they have the name in. And they're
- 33:43Speaker 2: running commercials.
- 33:44Speaker 4: Do we know if Christian Mingle produced the movie? Because
- 33:48Speaker 4: it feels like they did, but did they?
- 33:50Speaker 1: It feels like they must have had some hand in it.
- 33:52Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, legally they had to.
- 33:54Speaker 1: But the thing I do love about it is not
- 33:58Speaker 1: very often do you get an inciting incident that is
- 34:01Speaker 1: just a commercial. And that's actually awesome.
- 34:04Speaker 4: Yeah, just a real commercial.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Just a commercial, and then it's like, well, I should
- 34:07Speaker 1: do that. And it's like, yeah, I guess so.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. I mean, like, how amazing would it be
- 34:11Speaker 4: if there was a movie, like a Hallmark-style movie called
- 34:15Speaker 4: Sky Rizzy? And the inciting incident was a Sky Rizzy commercial.
- 34:18Speaker 1: And they were like, yeah, probably.
- 34:20Speaker 4: We're like, wait, I do need Sky Rizzy. And then, yeah,
- 34:23Speaker 4: that's so good.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Do they make Sky Rizzy for dummies? Because that's your
- 34:27Speaker 2: next step is you got to go out and get
- 34:28Speaker 2: the book so you can learn all about your Sky Rizzy. Yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Yes.
- 34:32Speaker 4: What is so crazy, too, is like the inciting incident
- 34:35Speaker 4: is that she keeps seeing these Christian Mingle commercials.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That's like. Yeah. And then she signs up even though she's.
- 34:42Speaker 1: This part is crazy to me, especially because I didn't
- 34:46Speaker 1: grow up Christian, so I don't know how this is
- 34:48Speaker 1: an issue. She is technically Christian, but not Christian enough,
- 34:53Speaker 1: question mark. Not, like, super Christian, so it's apparently, like,
- 34:57Speaker 1: very bad that she would sign up and pretend she's
- 35:00Speaker 1: Christian or more Christian, which to me, I'm like, this
- 35:04Speaker 1: is nothing. There's no conflict here.
- 35:05Speaker 4: The whole movie could have just been her going on
- 35:07Speaker 4: eHarmony and.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Being like, this is fine, or like, Like, yeah, it's not.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Like, oh, I'm not Christian and I'm pretending to be Christian.
- 35:14Speaker 2: No.
- 35:14Speaker 1: Because they wouldn't do that. They're like, oh, we can't
- 35:17Speaker 1: have her not be Christian.
- 35:17Speaker 4: It's like, she is Christian, but she's just not a
- 35:21Speaker 4: type of Christian that goes to church on Sundays.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Which is like, this is a non-issue. And they're like, oh,
- 35:25Speaker 1: that's very different. This is a non-issue.
- 35:28Speaker 2: I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Because I
- 35:30Speaker 2: sat there the whole time going, but she She just
- 35:33Speaker 2: said she's baptized for God's sakes. For God's sakes. It's
- 35:37Speaker 2: right there. She's welcomed into the church. From that point on,
- 35:41Speaker 2: the rest of you people need to stop.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just a non-issue. In the same way that
- 35:46Speaker 1: nobody wants this is kind of a non-issue. I grew
- 35:50Speaker 1: up Jewish and we went to a reform temple and
- 35:53Speaker 1: our cantor was like, married to a woman who was
- 35:57Speaker 1: not Jewish and everyone was like, great, cool.
- 35:59Speaker 2: They stoned him immediately.
- 36:01Speaker 1: It's just like, it's just, these are things that are non-issues,
- 36:04Speaker 1: but are like being made to seem like no one
- 36:06Speaker 1: could possibly accept this. It's like, people are fine.
- 36:08Speaker 4: I'm watching, I'm watching Big Love right now for some reason,
- 36:11Speaker 4: which is crazy because it came out so long ago,
- 36:12Speaker 4: but there's like this whole kind of like forced storyline
- 36:16Speaker 4: where it's like, oh, the non-polygamist Mormons are like always
- 36:20Speaker 4: trying to find out who's a polygamist and like expose them.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't think that's how it happens.
- 36:26Speaker 4: I think they're like, oh yeah, I don't really want
- 36:27Speaker 4: to be associated with that, but I'm not going to
- 36:29Speaker 4: like go out of my way to, anyway, yeah. Yeah.
- 36:33Speaker 2: She does use the line, I believe in God and
- 36:36Speaker 2: stuff is my go-to quote. I mean, that's all you need.
- 36:40Speaker 2: I believe in God and stuff.
- 36:41Speaker 4: And then her coworker is like, oh, not good enough.
- 36:45Speaker 2: But wouldn't give her the secret that she is also
- 36:48Speaker 2: into God and stuff. We have to save that for
- 36:50Speaker 2: a big reveal later.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Yeah, because it's a huge deal.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I'm also kind of like, wouldn't it be like a
- 36:56Speaker 1: plus that she was like not super Christian and then
- 36:59Speaker 1: the guy that she got with was super Christian and
- 37:01Speaker 1: kind of converted her to be more Christian? Like, wouldn't
- 37:03Speaker 1: that be kind of a win for him? Because people
- 37:06Speaker 1: like converting people.
- 37:07Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. I mean, not
- 37:09Speaker 2: to generalize, but people who are like really into religion
- 37:13Speaker 2: love to tell you that they're really into religion. And
- 37:16Speaker 2: they really want to swing you over their way into
- 37:19Speaker 2: whatever it is that they're preaching to you about.
- 37:21Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, she would have been the perfect person
- 37:24Speaker 4: for that.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Recruit. Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I mean, she's already Christian. She's just like, oh, I
- 37:29Speaker 4: just haven't spent that much time thinking about it.
- 37:32Speaker 1: No, it would be perfect.
- 37:33Speaker 4: There's very little conflict.
- 37:34Speaker 1: It's a non-issue. There's no conflict.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Which is funny that we're like well into the movie
- 37:39Speaker 2: before we even hit that part. Like she just sort
- 37:41Speaker 2: of glosses over it and does a lot of bad.
- 37:44Speaker 2: I'm just, after a while, I'm like, just stop praying. Just,
- 37:47Speaker 2: I don't, stop praying out loud for God's sakes.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a movie that I believe had no notes. Yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Like, I don't believe that anyone ever gave this movie
- 37:56Speaker 1: any notes. And I think that's awesome.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:58Speaker 4: And the reason it's like Christian Mingle has to be involved,
- 38:01Speaker 4: not only because it's the title and the, you know.
- 38:03Speaker 1: It's the plot, but it's like.
- 38:06Speaker 2: It's a level of cluelessness.
- 38:08Speaker 4: She could have just gone on eHarmony.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 4: She could have just gone on Match.com or any.
- 38:14Speaker 1: She could have literally gone on Christian Mingle and just
- 38:16Speaker 1: ended up with somebody who's a little less Christian.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Who likes God, but not stuff.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 38:24Speaker 2: So yeah, we get, we, we cut back. We have
- 38:27Speaker 2: also got our J Peterman's magic pill side plot that
- 38:32Speaker 2: that's my, I mean, I guess we don't even have
- 38:33Speaker 2: to go too far down that road because what, what
- 38:37Speaker 2: did we just need to fill time to make sure
- 38:38Speaker 2: it was feature length because we don't even finish that storyline.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:42Speaker 4: It's, it's interesting because it's like, they're trying to map it.
- 38:47Speaker 4: I feel like, I feel like they're trying to map
- 38:48Speaker 4: it into a metaphor. The idea of like, Oh, the
- 38:54Speaker 4: boss is bald and he wants to believe in this
- 38:57Speaker 4: blue pill that makes your hair grow.
- 39:01Speaker 1: But that's not real.
- 39:05Speaker 2: That's not real. But what you should have faith in
- 39:08Speaker 2: is this other thing over here that might seem not
- 39:10Speaker 2: real to you, too.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Yeah, and they try to kind of be like, see?
- 39:15Speaker 1: And I just don't think it ever makes any sense. No,
- 39:18Speaker 1: I've seen that movie so many times, and it doesn't
- 39:21Speaker 1: make any sense. There's just nothing.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just, it's so weird that they bothered to
- 39:27Speaker 2: cram that in there, I guess, just because they're like, well,
- 39:29Speaker 2: we booked these actors. actors and they're here, so let's give.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Them a scene. He's a delight. Yeah, he's great.
- 39:34Speaker 2: He's funny. Yeah, he's funny.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I think they were literally just like, I don't know, well,
- 39:40Speaker 1: she goes to work, so what should she be doing there?
- 39:42Speaker 2: I think that's as much as they thought about it,
- 39:45Speaker 2: based on, again, just building the set and like, I
- 39:48Speaker 2: don't know, like ships and boats and stuff yeah there's
- 39:51Speaker 2: a lot of that which by the way we don't
- 39:55Speaker 2: know where this takes place in in the fictional world
- 39:58Speaker 2: i don't think they ever really say it's semi-cold because
- 40:01Speaker 2: she's always wearing layers yes but if it's where they
- 40:04Speaker 2: shot it it's completely landlocked so why steven tobalowski went
- 40:08Speaker 2: with a boat theme i don't know it's dead in
- 40:11Speaker 2: the middle of the state like Yeah, that's fair. That's fair.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I think they just found the hat and they were like,
- 40:16Speaker 1: that's kind of silly.
- 40:17Speaker 2: That looks good. Go for it. Get your captain's wheel
- 40:21Speaker 2: and put it on the wall. It'll be great.
- 40:23Speaker 4: Maybe he's just pining for the sea.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. That's his problem. He's landlocked, damn it.
- 40:28Speaker 4: Have you never seen a landlocked person pining for the sea?
- 40:31Speaker 1: Yeah, like Owl City. Do you remember Owl City?
- 40:35Speaker 4: I do, but I don't remember that they were landlocked
- 40:37Speaker 4: and pining for the sea.
- 40:38Speaker 1: It's one guy. The band is one guy for Owl City.
- 40:41Speaker 1: And he famously, maybe not famously, maybe this is just
- 40:44Speaker 1: something I know. When he got famous, he was literally like,
- 40:47Speaker 1: the only thing I want is to see the sea.
- 40:50Speaker 1: I have not seen the sea. Oh, wow. Yeah. Because
- 40:52Speaker 1: he was from a landlocked place and had never seen
- 40:54Speaker 1: the ocean. I hope he got to see it.
- 40:55Speaker 2: I think he did.
- 40:55Speaker 4: Okay, good.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Maybe it is just a weird musician thing, too. Because
- 40:59Speaker 2: I do remember having friends, then they were in a band.
- 41:02Speaker 2: And then after a while, we realized, your album has
- 41:04Speaker 2: 10 tracks. Three of them have, like, seafaring themes. You
- 41:08Speaker 2: guys might need to dig into that a little bit.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Because something's going on there.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Auditions love the sea. They yearn for the sea.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Well, it's because of sea shanties.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Which they're all inspired by famously.
- 41:17Speaker 4: All music comes from sea shanties.
- 41:20Speaker 1: And that's true.
- 41:21Speaker 2: That's where it all started.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Or originated in the sea.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Yeah, every Chapel Roan song is basically a sea shanty.
- 41:30Speaker 2: That sounds about right, actually. I can see that.
- 41:34Speaker 1: If Chapel Roan was an album of sea shanties, I
- 41:37Speaker 1: actually think it would do well. Oh, I'm sure.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I mean, she can get the job done. So that
- 41:41Speaker 2: certainly includes some sea shanty action.
- 41:43Speaker 1: It would be good.
- 41:45Speaker 2: So we get the Bible study, which this is another
- 41:49Speaker 2: weird thing that has crossed over into my life and
- 41:53Speaker 2: As I mentioned, my take on it, I now like
- 41:56Speaker 2: literally have to bite my tongue because I've been lately
- 41:58Speaker 2: in a room with two people who are surprisingly, this
- 42:02Speaker 2: is maybe the most impressive part because they are different religions,
- 42:05Speaker 2: but they have found out the other is also equally
- 42:09Speaker 2: religious and like they got super excited. So now they
- 42:12Speaker 2: will cross over in this room and have like this
- 42:15Speaker 2: weird little exchange of like recommending godly movies to each
- 42:20Speaker 2: other and like, breaking down this passage. And I was
- 42:23Speaker 2: just like, Oh, what is, this is just Bible study
- 42:26Speaker 2: that I didn't sign up for.
- 42:28Speaker 1: That's kind of healthy though. Like I like the idea
- 42:30Speaker 1: that they're being like, Oh, we both have the same
- 42:33Speaker 1: kind of vibe. We're both into this.
- 42:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:36Speaker 1: It's just different things. And they're both like, Oh my God,
- 42:39Speaker 1: how fun. That's cute. That's like how we could solve wars.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:42Speaker 4: We should solve wars that way. Cause that's way better
- 42:44Speaker 4: than them being like, Oh, I don't like you. Cause
- 42:45Speaker 4: you don't look at it.
- 42:46Speaker 1: The right way. Yeah.
- 42:47Speaker 2: That is, yeah, how religion should operate and isn't. Instead,
- 42:51Speaker 2: we just murder people.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a thing that if people use it to
- 42:55Speaker 4: make themselves better for other people, whatever.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Have we talked about the first date yet?
- 43:02Speaker 2: No, the coffee shop? Yeah, because that's huge. Well, we
- 43:08Speaker 2: mentioned her praying. So once again, stop praying out loud.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Yeah, she prays over coffee. Yeah, yeah. goes on a
- 43:16Speaker 1: date with this guy, it's pretty much fine.
- 43:18Speaker 4: It's her first Christian mingle date. And what, what we
- 43:21Speaker 4: can't get over in this scene is like, she meets
- 43:23Speaker 4: this guy and in your head, you're like, okay, she's
- 43:26Speaker 4: probably going to meet with a couple of guys and
- 43:27Speaker 4: we'll do like a silly, funny, like where she's meeting
- 43:29Speaker 4: with different guys who are really into religion. And for montage.
- 43:33Speaker 1: No, not offensive reason. It's like, it won't work out.
- 43:35Speaker 1: And then she'll find the guy.
- 43:36Speaker 4: And the date is so awkward and uncomfortable that you
- 43:39Speaker 4: think that that's what's happening until you realize, no, this
- 43:42Speaker 4: is actually the only.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Guy she dates for the entire movie. This is the guy.
- 43:46Speaker 4: It doesn't like, there's no chemistry and it's just like
- 43:49Speaker 4: really uncomfortable. And she like fake praise over, or she protects,
- 43:53Speaker 4: she's like, I'm, she like says grace over like coffee
- 43:55Speaker 4: or something. And he's like, wow, you're so devout. And
- 43:58Speaker 4: she's just like trying really hard. But then he tells
- 44:00Speaker 4: the story of how he became Christian, which is that
- 44:02Speaker 4: his father was a drifter. And then his last name
- 44:07Speaker 4: is Wood. The character's name is.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Paul Wood, classic Paul Wood.
- 44:10Speaker 4: And he goes, my dad was a drifter.
- 44:13Speaker 1: So close to being Paul Hollywood. Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 44:16Speaker 4: Really, it is.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Which is different. Which is different.
- 44:19Speaker 2: That's Doc Hollywood. It's a whole different movie.
- 44:21Speaker 4: And he's like, my dad found Jesus in a piece
- 44:25Speaker 4: of driftwood, and his last name is Wood, so he
- 44:26Speaker 4: became a preacher.
- 44:28Speaker 1: And.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Which is the whole driftwood thing.
- 44:33Speaker 4: But at a certain point, he says something casually and
- 44:37Speaker 4: she clocks.
- 44:38Speaker 1: It as weird.
- 44:38Speaker 4: And the thing he says is, Papa warned me it
- 44:41Speaker 4: would be my undoing.
- 44:42Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 44:43Speaker 4: And one of our patrons, after we did a Christian
- 44:46Speaker 4: Mingle movie night, sent us mugs that said, Papa warned
- 44:49Speaker 4: me it would be my undoing.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Which is what adult men say often. Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 2: And it's what you should have.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Always going on about Papa, I am.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Papa and how he warned about the undoing and yeah.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Well, again, that's one of those that watching I'm like,
- 45:03Speaker 2: once again, you're already like kind of off in your
- 45:06Speaker 2: presentation of the plot as a whole. But specifically, this
- 45:10Speaker 2: guy like makes no sense. Because again, trying to be
- 45:14Speaker 2: a musician is a weird choice unless he specifically was like, oh,
- 45:18Speaker 2: me and my Jesus band and like. making it Christian rock.
- 45:22Speaker 2: But when he describes it, he throws up the devil horns.
- 45:24Speaker 2: And I'm like, okay, people who are super devout like
- 45:28Speaker 2: you don't like that. Like those are the kind of
- 45:30Speaker 2: people they make fun of and are like trying to
- 45:33Speaker 2: get like fired from their job because they're evil. It's yeah.
- 45:39Speaker 1: That's it is definitely not within the character but.
- 45:42Speaker 4: Also it fringes her out like he's like yeah rock
- 45:45Speaker 4: and roll and she's like uh-oh yikes and and so
- 45:47Speaker 4: that's what always makes me think like oh this is
- 45:49Speaker 4: the bad this is like the silly bad date with
- 45:52Speaker 4: a sweet guy who like it just isn't right for
- 45:53Speaker 4: her and then we'll see a couple more guys but
- 45:55Speaker 4: she's like just no immediately like first option let's fucking.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Go yeah she's totally creeped out and yet Let's do this.
- 46:02Speaker 2: All right. I am all in.
- 46:04Speaker 1: She goes home and is kind of like, probably not.
- 46:07Speaker 1: And then decides to call or something. She probably like
- 46:09Speaker 1: sees another Christian Mingle commercial or something. And I'm kind
- 46:11Speaker 1: of like, you know, there are more guys on there, right?
- 46:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:14Speaker 2: No, you get one shot. That's it.
- 46:16Speaker 1: One date. He's like, well, I guess I don't want
- 46:18Speaker 1: to be alone.
- 46:19Speaker 4: And I'm like, is it, was that a note that
- 46:21Speaker 4: it was like, well, we can't show that any man
- 46:23Speaker 4: who uses Christian Mingle is undateable or wouldn't want to
- 46:26Speaker 4: be dated. We just, you think there was.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Because there were no notes.
- 46:29Speaker 2: This is a commercial. I mean, we can't do this wrong. Like,
- 46:32Speaker 2: obviously everyone is perfect for you. Yeah.
- 46:35Speaker 1: This was written once and no one ever reread it.
- 46:38Speaker 2: No, never.
- 46:39Speaker 1: An essay in college.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, she also, it was around this time, we
- 46:45Speaker 2: get our first glimpse of her Christian bike fixer, which
- 46:49Speaker 2: eventually I'm like, why? How many times a day do
- 46:52Speaker 2: you mess up your bike? Like she is there a
- 46:53Speaker 2: little too much.
- 46:54Speaker 1: And you fuck your bike up every day. Yeah. I mean,
- 46:57Speaker 1: when you're always driving your bike to work and you're
- 47:00Speaker 1: like constantly wearing your boots, like you're going to fuck
- 47:03Speaker 1: up your bike.
- 47:04Speaker 2: Well, yeah.
- 47:04Speaker 4: And also when you're kind of Christian, but not that Christian,
- 47:08Speaker 4: you're always going to fuck up your bike. That's how
- 47:11Speaker 4: it goes.
- 47:12Speaker 2: That's because you're evil. God knows it. And he's like, no, no, no,
- 47:15Speaker 2: no bike for you.
- 47:16Speaker 4: God knows it because he wants you to take that
- 47:18Speaker 4: broken bike to the Christian bike fixer.
- 47:21Speaker 2: And he's going to lead you down the right path
- 47:24Speaker 2: because he's got that cross of gleaming. I don't know
- 47:28Speaker 2: why she didn't just hook up with Corbin anyway. I mean,
- 47:30Speaker 2: it's a little older, but that doesn't really seem to
- 47:32Speaker 2: stop people.
- 47:33Speaker 1: He was kind of a zaddy, right? I can't remember.
- 47:36Speaker 2: He's all right at that point.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Okay, iconic.
- 47:39Speaker 2: I mean, obviously, you put yourself in the movie. You're
- 47:41Speaker 2: going to give yourself the dreamy bike fix.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Is that the director?
- 47:44Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. That's Corbin Burns.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Oh, my God. That is the director. Thank you for
- 47:50Speaker 1: teaching us that.
- 47:51Speaker 2: That is, yeah. He is, I mean, he's an actor
- 47:55Speaker 2: in his own right and pretty famous, actually, but even
- 47:58Speaker 2: more so writer and director. So when I have story issues,
- 48:02Speaker 2: I'm also blaming Corbin. Wow.
- 48:05Speaker 4: He's the writer and director?
- 48:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Yes. incredible what else is he in i mean he
- 48:11Speaker 2: was he was la law for years like he was
- 48:14Speaker 2: old school like he laid into that and then he
- 48:18Speaker 2: did one-off movies he's like uh major league he's one
- 48:21Speaker 2: of the guys in the dentist i think was him
- 48:24Speaker 2: which i've heard is actually not bad as horror movies
- 48:26Speaker 2: go so he's in a ton.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Of stuff south by southwest awesome that's so fun wow.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Wow you just taught us something about one of our
- 48:36Speaker 4: favorite movies that's awesome so.
- 48:38Speaker 2: It's yeah it's interesting seeing that his name popped up
- 48:42Speaker 2: at the beginning there and then once i'm like of
- 48:43Speaker 2: course he's got to work himself in you know he's
- 48:45Speaker 2: a he's a recognized he's one of their bigger names
- 48:47Speaker 2: truthfully so yeah that was that was a weird little
- 48:51Speaker 2: place to sandwich himself but you know he got it in.
- 48:53Speaker 4: There that makes sense too as to like that whole
- 48:56Speaker 4: storyline being there yeah that's interesting okay.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Immediately a lot of So we also, in the mix there,
- 49:04Speaker 2: we get not just the driftwood, but the mice running
- 49:07Speaker 2: through the maze story, which was his finding his lord.
- 49:10Speaker 2: And it's, again, that subtle, like, this is what it's
- 49:15Speaker 2: really about, man. you know we're all distracted by the
- 49:17Speaker 2: cheese it gets real deep at this point it's you
- 49:20Speaker 2: know but really it's you know no matter which side
- 49:23Speaker 2: you go down in this path you still get to
- 49:25Speaker 2: the cheese man it was real deep.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Yeah a lot of metaphors in this movie.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Yeah maybe too many and they cross over and don't
- 49:33Speaker 2: match up and.
- 49:34Speaker 4: That's what's about it right that's what we like we
- 49:37Speaker 4: need more So.
- 49:38Speaker 2: A few more metaphors.
- 49:39Speaker 3: That's what we need.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I do like all the fake stores that they go to.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Once again, I'm way more, I'm way more distracted as
- 49:48Speaker 2: they're standing in front of the hair cutters. I can't,
- 49:51Speaker 2: I'm like, I can't listen to your dumb story right now.
- 49:53Speaker 2: I'm looking at the hair cutters behind you.
- 49:55Speaker 1: The hair cutters. When they finally go to Steak and Cake,
- 50:00Speaker 1: which is a restaurant in the movie, which I do
- 50:03Speaker 1: think should be real. The place setting, like what is
- 50:08Speaker 1: on the table are big things of cake as well
- 50:12Speaker 1: as big things of steak at the same time.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Yeah, they're served at the same time. It's like several
- 50:18Speaker 4: platters of like 10 steaks across the table.
- 50:21Speaker 1: And then like no sides.
- 50:23Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. No side dishes
- 50:25Speaker 2: is what killed me. And water. Everyone gets water. It's
- 50:29Speaker 2: like prison, but with fancy cake and steaks. Yeah.
- 50:32Speaker 1: And full cakes. Yeah, just a round of waters, steaks,
- 50:35Speaker 1: and cakes for the table.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Imagine going anywhere and ordering that. Just round of waters, steaks,
- 50:40Speaker 4: and cakes.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I would do it. Like, the way I want this
- 50:42Speaker 1: to be real so badly, like, I want this restaurant
- 50:44Speaker 1: to be real, and I want them to not give
- 50:45Speaker 1: you the option of having things come in a normal order. Yeah. Like,
- 50:50Speaker 1: being like, sorry, this is how we do it. Everything
- 50:52Speaker 1: comes at once.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Dad even said, he's like, I don't know which one
- 50:55Speaker 2: to have first. Like, it's overwhelming for him. Like, chocolate steak?
- 51:00Speaker 2: I don't know. How do I do this?
- 51:01Speaker 1: Like.
- 51:01Speaker 4: Papa warns himself it will be his undoing.
- 51:03Speaker 1: It's also just a great thing to know that this
- 51:06Speaker 1: writer has never been to a restaurant.
- 51:09Speaker 2: See, that's the thing. This was maybe the most specific
- 51:13Speaker 2: part in the movie that I was like, if you
- 51:15Speaker 2: took this idea and put it in a different movie,
- 51:18Speaker 2: this would be genius. Like this is the funniest idea
- 51:22Speaker 2: in the movie. And like, it's so absurd that like,
- 51:26Speaker 2: if you put it in the right comedy, people would
- 51:28Speaker 2: be like, Quoting this night and day, like you and
- 51:31Speaker 2: your friends would be like, dude, let's go get some
- 51:33Speaker 2: steak and cake. And like everybody would laugh because it's hilarious.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Except it's in this movie. And you're like, what the
- 51:38Speaker 2: hell is going on right now?
- 51:40Speaker 4: Handle food in such a funny way in this movie, too.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Like they're very weird about food. Like they when they
- 51:48Speaker 4: go on a date or something.
- 51:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he hates sushi. He takes him to.
- 51:52Speaker 4: Sushi for the first time, but not only does he
- 51:54Speaker 4: hate it, he's like never seen it before.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:57Speaker 4: Also, throwback to them being landlocked, so I don't even
- 51:59Speaker 4: know if you go there for sushi.
- 52:01Speaker 2: That's how you get your good sushi, is when you're landlocked, yeah.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 52:05Speaker 4: But like, he literally has, they're at sushi and he's like, oh,
- 52:09Speaker 4: sushi's the hip.
- 52:10Speaker 1: New thing, which like, no.
- 52:11Speaker 4: It's 2014, what are you talking about?
- 52:14Speaker 2: Even in 2014, it was pretty well established.
- 52:17Speaker 1: Like, what we're not remembering is he woke up from
- 52:19Speaker 1: an egg this morning. That's true. He's like not a
- 52:24Speaker 1: human being. He's someone who woke up from like a
- 52:27Speaker 1: freezer and then went on his first date and started existing.
- 52:30Speaker 4: And the tone in that scene where she takes him
- 52:33Speaker 4: to a sushi restaurant, she's like, come be cultured with me.
- 52:35Speaker 1: And he's like trying to eat it. And he's like,
- 52:38Speaker 1: what is this? And he's like trying to eat it.
- 52:40Speaker 2: He like stabs it. Yeah.
- 52:43Speaker 4: And then he like chews it for 500 years. And
- 52:45Speaker 4: she's like, you can spit it out if you want.
- 52:47Speaker 4: You know what it actually is like?
- 52:48Speaker 1: It's like in Marvel movies when they have a superhero
- 52:52Speaker 1: come from another planet. And they're like, this is the
- 52:54Speaker 1: fun and games portion where we see that they're not
- 52:57Speaker 1: a human being.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Thor is such a fish out of water. Look at him.
- 53:00Speaker 2: He doesn't know what a pet store is.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Or is like, I need a horse.
- 53:04Speaker 4: Ha ha ha.
- 53:05Speaker 1: And then we see this guy just being like, I
- 53:07Speaker 1: don't know what sushi is. I've never seen chopsticks. Yeah.
- 53:10Speaker 4: And it's just this thing where it's like, I feel
- 53:12Speaker 4: like the thing they end up saying in the movie,
- 53:14Speaker 4: because he's like, sorry, I'm a little bit more of a,
- 53:16Speaker 4: what is it?
- 53:17Speaker 1: A Philly cheese steak?
- 53:18Speaker 4: Not a Philly steak and cake.
- 53:19Speaker 2: A chili and cheese dog.
- 53:21Speaker 1: Chili cheese dog.
- 53:22Speaker 2: I was like, yeah. Chili cheese dog, I think.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Chili cheese dog.
- 53:25Speaker 4: That's what it was. I was like, it's worse.
- 53:26Speaker 1: Chili cheese steak is good. It was a chili cheese dog.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I don't even believe he's a chili cheese dog type
- 53:31Speaker 1: of guy. I believe he's like a white bread with
- 53:33Speaker 1: ham and.
- 53:33Speaker 2: Water type guy. That's too messy. I think he would
- 53:36Speaker 2: mess up his God shirt and it would not go well.
- 53:39Speaker 1: He would mess up his God shirt.
- 53:40Speaker 4: And I feel like the movie is kind of saying like, yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 4: forget this like woo woo liberal culture thing of sushi.
- 53:48Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 53:48Speaker 4: For real America.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Have a chili cheese dog and that makes them both happy.
- 53:53Speaker 1: And like, don't do that. And it's just sushi. Like
- 53:57Speaker 1: it's just like, just sushi.
- 53:59Speaker 2: The thing that I found the most frightening as we
- 54:02Speaker 2: entered that scene, I was just like, oh God, oh God.
- 54:05Speaker 2: I say God a lot in this and I'm using
- 54:07Speaker 2: it the wrong way. As the music kicks in and
- 54:10Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, how? I was like, are we going
- 54:13Speaker 2: to have a gong when we make a bad Asian joke?
- 54:16Speaker 2: Like I was like, how stereotypical are we going with
- 54:19Speaker 2: this music? And then it was so loud. Like it
- 54:22Speaker 2: was just overpowering in some of the, like it was
- 54:25Speaker 2: inconsistent for one. Like when they weren't talking, it was
- 54:27Speaker 2: just blaring. And it was like the worst stereotypical music.
- 54:33Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no, no, don't do that.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Yeah. I was like, how bad?
- 54:37Speaker 1: Everyone in this fictional state has never met a person
- 54:40Speaker 1: who's not white. Yeah.
- 54:42Speaker 2: And everyone in the restaurant, I'm pretty sure, was white. Like,
- 54:45Speaker 2: even the people serving the food might have been, like.
- 54:48Speaker 4: It's shocking yeah and and like yeah just the fact
- 54:52Speaker 4: that the undertone is like she tries to introduce him
- 54:55Speaker 4: to her world and instead of being accepting and open
- 54:57Speaker 4: to it he's like this is yucky you should do
- 54:59Speaker 4: something worse and then she's like i love.
- 55:02Speaker 2: To i love that's so unusual for people who are
- 55:05Speaker 2: very devout religious types they're usually so open-minded and welcoming
- 55:10Speaker 2: of other ideas i.
- 55:11Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, no. So, so yeah.
- 55:12Speaker 4: And then steak and cake is, I think we should
- 55:14Speaker 4: all probably have a steak and cake party.
- 55:16Speaker 2: I mean, I'm all for that. If that needs to
- 55:19Speaker 2: be like the next, like tie in for movie night
- 55:21Speaker 2: is like you pick a whole different movie, but then
- 55:24Speaker 2: it's nothing but steak and cake all night. Yeah.
- 55:26Speaker 1: And water. I would feel so sick.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Definitely water. Yeah.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:30Speaker 2: I mean, we can find alternatives as well. You know,
- 55:32Speaker 2: we can have fake steak.
- 55:36Speaker 1: His family, who he goes to the steak and cake with,
- 55:40Speaker 1: doesn't like her necessarily. They don't like her, especially his mom.
- 55:44Speaker 1: And she is.
- 55:46Speaker 4: And there's no.
- 55:47Speaker 1: And she is.
- 55:48Speaker 2: She is. She can just sense it. She's got those
- 55:51Speaker 2: mom powers that she's just like, no, no, no. There's
- 55:54Speaker 2: something up with this girl. She's trying to do something
- 55:56Speaker 2: to my little boy.
- 55:57Speaker 4: She is like exactly the character that she is, you know,
- 56:00Speaker 4: like that character is so well done. I think weirdly, like,
- 56:03Speaker 4: it's like, okay, you got exactly who that person should be.
- 56:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:06Speaker 4: But yeah, she, I think she just like her Christian
- 56:08Speaker 4: senses are tingling and she knows that. that Gwyneth isn't
- 56:12Speaker 4: as Christian as she is saying she is.
- 56:15Speaker 1: And, you know, and also. This is actually a really
- 56:17Speaker 1: good thing we haven't mentioned yet. Gwyneth goes by Gwyneth.
- 56:21Speaker 1: And then when everyone tries to give her a nickname,
- 56:24Speaker 1: they don't call her Gwen. They call her Gwenny, which
- 56:27Speaker 1: is a name that no one's ever gone by. Yeah.
- 56:29Speaker 4: And she said, she says to Paul in the beginning,
- 56:32Speaker 4: he says, is your name Gwyneth or Gwenny?
- 56:34Speaker 1: Which no one would guess.
- 56:35Speaker 4: And then she said, Call me Gwen. I forget what
- 56:38Speaker 4: the exact line is, but it's something like, you know,
- 56:40Speaker 4: she threatens him.
- 56:40Speaker 2: She threatens him with death, essentially, which, which is, which
- 56:44Speaker 2: was the most charming thing she said the whole movie.
- 56:46Speaker 2: I think I was like, Oh, now I like her.
- 56:48Speaker 2: Hold on. I like this.
- 56:49Speaker 1: She had a little bit of edge.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Then she got boring again.
- 56:52Speaker 1: She goes by Gwyneth, not Gwenny. And she hates being
- 56:55Speaker 1: called Gwenny, the made up name. And then his Bible
- 56:59Speaker 1: study friends call her Gwenny. And she goes like, yeah,
- 57:02Speaker 1: I love being called Gwenny.
- 57:04Speaker 4: And she immediately changes her mind and is like, just kidding.
- 57:07Speaker 4: I'm fine with this.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Call me Gwenny.
- 57:08Speaker 4: Which is like, don't do that.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Don't have the script do that.
- 57:12Speaker 2: And again, we come back to that in our little
- 57:15Speaker 2: meet up there at the hair cutters. Because he specifically
- 57:18Speaker 2: says in the oh-so-subtle theme of the movie, which, by
- 57:21Speaker 2: the way, we're on theme number three here. But yeah,
- 57:24Speaker 2: it's the just be you. You know, just be you. Again,
- 57:29Speaker 2: the deep messages in this movie. Just be you, man.
- 57:33Speaker 1: And it's like.
- 57:34Speaker 4: It's like, just be you, but all of the things.
- 57:38Speaker 2: That I want you to be.
- 57:40Speaker 4: She doesn't like, so she changes them and he doesn't
- 57:42Speaker 4: even know. Like, it's like, at no point in the
- 57:45Speaker 4: movie is she just her.
- 57:46Speaker 1: No.
- 57:47Speaker 2: But again, fast forward to the end, not to jump,
- 57:49Speaker 2: but like once we get into the conflict, I'm like, okay,
- 57:52Speaker 2: but she was like, she's, she's telling you now. She's like, I,
- 57:55Speaker 2: I'm into God and stuff. And I'm not quite, she's
- 57:59Speaker 2: come clean. She's like, I'm not quite as devout as
- 58:01Speaker 2: you are, but I'm interested. You know, I want to learn.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Why don't you teach me? No. He's like, no. Yeah.
- 58:10Speaker 2: You're just being you, but I don't care now because
- 58:12Speaker 2: I want things my way. I was like, what? You
- 58:14Speaker 2: just told her earlier to be who she is. She's
- 58:18Speaker 2: now admitted to you who she is and you don't
- 58:20Speaker 2: like it. You want to throw her out there?
- 58:22Speaker 1: Kind of like a Grease ending where she very much
- 58:25Speaker 1: so Sandy D like turns into kind of more of
- 58:29Speaker 1: a the guy vibe and then it's perfect.
- 58:31Speaker 4: She turns into who he wants her to be on
- 58:33Speaker 4: her own magically. Yeah, she becomes more devout and he's like, see,
- 58:37Speaker 4: this is who you are.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Awesome. Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 2: And her car floats away.
- 58:41Speaker 4: Can we talk about R.
- 58:42Speaker 1: Kelly? Because she is my favorite character.
- 58:45Speaker 2: All right.
- 58:47Speaker 4: Uh uh they're his camp friend that the his mom
- 58:50Speaker 4: is in it wants him to end up with his
- 58:53Speaker 4: friend from bible camp.
- 58:54Speaker 2: That we we don't see it coming when she enters
- 58:57Speaker 2: the room and there's only one other person in there
- 58:59Speaker 2: of similar age that's.
- 59:01Speaker 4: Unattached similar age a single girl and her name is
- 59:06Speaker 4: kelly but she goes by Kel-Kels.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Again, something no one would ever say.
- 59:12Speaker 1: And Kel-Kels and Gwenny.
- 59:13Speaker 2: That's my favorite sitcom.
- 59:16Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's a point where the mom says to Gwenny,
- 59:20Speaker 4: she goes, oh, and have you met R. Kelly?
- 59:22Speaker 1: Like our Kelly. But she says, oh, have you met R. Kelly?
- 59:26Speaker 4: And then we cut to this like blonde woman being like, hi.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Oh, she's met R. Kelly. Don't you worry.
- 59:33Speaker 4: In my brain, I'm just like that character's name is R.
- 59:35Speaker 1: Kelly.
- 59:36Speaker 2: Yeah. And equally as horrifying.
- 59:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Yeah. A hundred percent.
- 59:41Speaker 4: Just like, but yeah, we love, we love R. Kelly
- 59:45Speaker 4: from Christian Mingle, not from.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Yeah, obviously.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Hi. no shout outs for him no shout out to R.
- 59:52Speaker 1: Kelly shout out to Kel Kells yeah Kel Kells adult
- 59:57Speaker 1: woman named Kel Kells yeah you gotta have it I
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: If there are any adults in this movie truthfully good
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: point that's fair we don't again we don't have to
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: go back too much to the sales pitch but I
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: do want to again inconsistencies and things that just don't
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: make sense on a screenwriting standpoint which I'm watching again
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: in the middle of the night this morning And I'm like, wait,
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: did she just make a bullet reference? Not like first
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: of all, she doesn't seem like the kind of gal
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: who would be like bang bang doing like finger guns
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: and like pitching the gun sales pitch anyway, really. Because
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: as we said, she's a sushi eating liberal. So obviously
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: she wouldn't be pitching guns. But then even more like
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: not really genuine is she makes the movie like she's
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: making a steve mcqueen bullet reference and i'm like so
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: wait this girl this girl that we've met in this
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: movie so far is a big steve mcqueen fan like
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: i was just like no i think corbin bernson is
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: a big steve mcqueen fan and he wrote that line
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: because he thinks steve mcqueen is cool i don't think
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: this girl knows who the hell steve.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: Mcqueen is no i don't feel like no but maybe
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: she's full of surprises.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: She is but not always the best ones I want
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: more from her. I want the best from her. But
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: sometimes she just does not have it there for us.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, my gosh.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: So they're going to Mexico. He forgot to tell her.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Everyone from Mexico is so late in the movie. Because
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: they want to build houses.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, no, they want to fix it. They want
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: to fix the bell that fell down.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: It's not as important as building houses. Not as helpful,
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: in my opinion.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I thought she wanted, they wanted to build houses. Is
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: that what she does later?
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: It wasn't like the type of, like a construction, like
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: church going to hell kind of thing. But I think
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: the thing that they're reconstructing a church or something.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not even that great.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: We'll get to that in a minute because I have
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: issues with that too. But don't skip over the fact
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: that dad's company is named Wood Development. What kind of
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: a movie is this? Again, what jokes are you setting
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: up here? Because this is supposed to be quality Christian
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: morals and values and you're giving me Wood Development.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Come on. I love Wood Development.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Yeah. What is wrong with these people?
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: That is so funny. Development goes to Mexico.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: The other thing I take issue with in the religion
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: aspect of it is, as we've said, religious people are
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: super open-minded and don't like to, you know, interfight between
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: different types of religions. So they get there and I'm like,
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: that's a Catholic church. These people are definitely Christian.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Which are very different. Like, I'm not knee-deep in religion,
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: but I know there's a big difference between Catholics... And
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Christian and the other 48 different variations of Christianity. And
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: the fact that these people who are very specifically Christian
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: in their Christian church would go on a special mission
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: to help Catholics?
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: That's fair. That's fair. That's a good point.
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: I never even clocked that.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: How can you tell that the church is a Catholic
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: church and not a Christian church?
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Well, what's sad is that even the one they go
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: to is wrong. Because the one that they, because I
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: didn't notice until again, watching it again this morning, the
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: one that they go to earlier that she's in her
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: fancy outfit and meets the family has like Jesus on
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: the cross, which is, that is, yeah, the rest, there's
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: a few, I think, because I had to check. I
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: don't specifically, I didn't know that was a very Christian thing.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: But yeah, if you have dead Jesus hanging on the cross,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: that's Catholic. Like that's all kinds of. baggage that comes
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: with this dead guy that died for your sins and
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: you're gonna feel bad about it for the rest of
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: your life versus you're like protestant presbyterians all the other
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: people out there and again i don't know specifics someone
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: i'm sure will argue this but majority of the rest
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: of them just have like a regular old blank cross
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: up there and that's how it is so like first
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: off their church is wrong because that's definitely not a
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: catholic church but they have the wrong cross up there
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: and then definitely i mean it's Again, not to specific,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: but like Mexico, I feel like most of the churches
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: are going to be Catholic.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a very, yeah.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: Not to generalize, but.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Do we know if the guy who wrote it is Christian?
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: I would assume he has to be, but.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: That's even funnier. I kind of think there's a world
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: where he's not.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Well, that was my thing. I was like, if you're
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: making this religious movie, how do you not know the
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: specifics of your own religion, dude?
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Okay, he was reawakened.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Oh, he was reawakened. Ah, so he doesn't know history.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: Well, he's kind of like Gwenny.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: He's Gwenny.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: He's like Gwenny.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: This was like an autobiographical vibe.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: He found the Lord one day fixing bikes, and he
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: was just like, that's it. This is my calling. Yeah.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: Yeah, so they go to fix a bell that broke.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Is that what it was?
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's laying on the ground, which that's another weird
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: scene that I'm like, did you? Again, no second pass
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: on the screenplay because I'm like, so they've been there.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: We'll say easily a day that she wasn't there. I'm
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: thinking several days probably because she's been ignoring his calls
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: for days. Yeah, she was being cool. But then like,
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: so then she shows up and they just now have the,
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: let's all go stand around the bell and stare at it. Like,
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: isn't that the first thing you do when you get
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: into town? Like they waited for Gwenny to do that. Like, again,
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: I feel like you needed to hand off the screenplay
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: to somebody else and then be like, well, wait, what, why,
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: why now do they decide to go stand around the
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: bell and stare at it?
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Like the first few days were just like getting to
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: know you games. Yeah. Just improv.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: That might be true. Cause look at those people. In
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: their weird little bunk that they all sleep together.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: Oh my God, Kel Kels is there.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Kel Kels was there.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: Kel Kels is her bunkmate.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: They get matching shirts. How adorable is that?
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: And she shows up in like the wrong outfit and
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: everyone's like, oh, that's so embarrassing.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: It's so strange. So many of the issues in this film, again, non-issues.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: The weird girl, the pregnant one's like, you're pretty, it's okay.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: And I was just like, what? What movie was that
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: out of? It just doesn't fit anything going on. She's like,
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: it's so weird, this movie. It's amazing and weird.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: And Kel-Kel's fluent in Spanish, we reveal.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Everyone is except for her because Winnie doesn't know
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: what the hell.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: Is going on.
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: Winnie's just lying to everyone. No, everything falls apart in Mexico.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: That's when it all.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: Well, why would you pack the book? I mean... The
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: dead giveaway, Christian for dummies, Bible for dummies. Like, why
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: would you put it in your, you really, like, if
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: you're going to pack the Bible, sure, you're going to
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: need that for your Bible studying. But, like, why would
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: you bring the dead giveaway book that's going to get
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: you busted by Morgan Fairchild?
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: What the hell? Not smart. It's 2014, so you do
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: have access.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: There's a Kindle somewhere, right? I mean, there's something.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: You could look up questions you might have. Yeah.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: She is talking on a smartphone. I mean, it's a
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: dated one, but like it's not a flip phone. Like
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: she should be able to Google this shit. Yeah.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: That's so, yeah.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: You got to bring your Christianity for Dummies book to
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: the Christian people you're trying to trick. That'll always go well.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: And that's probably when I'm the most just infuriated by
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: that dude. And that's my issue with religious people. I'm
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: fine with like the concept of religion. If you want
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: to be, I like spiritual. That's fine. You can find
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: all kinds of good things in spiritual. But like people
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: who are religious, to me, it's ridiculous that they're the
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: most judgy. He is so judgy.
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: Yeah, Taylor Tomlinson said like the smartest thing because she
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: was raised really, really religious. She said something in her
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: stand up special that was like, if you're using it
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: as a tool to make to make yourself better and
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: to like feel like, you know, this is like a
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: way to get better for other people and like as
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: a coping mechanism for everything that's crazy. And it's like
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: a thing that helps you and you use it to
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: help others.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: If you're using it to judge or control or have
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: power over other people, that's fucked. And it's like, I mean,
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: she says it way smarter and funnier than that, but like,
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: that's the sentiment.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: And I was like, yeah, that's so many people.
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: If you, if you use it to be a good person, great.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: If you use it as a weapon, that's not good.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: That's the thing. I, I see a handful of people
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: who are legitimately good people and believe in God and you,
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: use the things that they learned in the Bible to
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: help people or for the right reasons. And I see
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: a lot of other people that like will preach it
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: and will, will be very judgy about it. But then
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: I will also see them doing things in their life.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: I'm like, no, no, that goes against everything in that
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: book you're always talking about. Like I, it's so weird
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: to me.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: It's just crazy to get to, to be that betrayed
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: and angry over finances.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: A Christianity for dummies book.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: Well, and again, almost, and it's almost him looking down
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: on her of like, how dare you want to learn
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: with a book?
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: How dare you want to learn something you already agree with?
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: How dare you learn something? you are a woman and
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: you keep in your place where you're ignorant. And I
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: tell you what you're supposed to believe was a little
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: bit of what I was picking up on, but I
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: might've just been feeding that in.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Listen, it's just Paul Wood.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: He's like that.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: Papa told him it would be as undoing.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: The whole Wood family is like that.
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: I swear.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Yeah. The Woods.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: So I don't know. Then he's a jerk and sends
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: her back home basically. So should I just leave? He's like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: I think you should.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Get the fuck out of here.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: It's like nice, real nice. Yeah. So we're already back
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: at work and she's rocking the hat again. So you
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: never go too long without that hat showing up. Only
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: this one's different because it's got buttons. She's got big
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: buttons on that one.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Single girl buttons.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: But she's back at work and then we cut to,
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: this is again, one of my main issues with this movie,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: which says a lot about me, that this is my
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: main issue with this movie. Of the three of us,
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: who has a giant metal trash can sitting inside their
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: house right now? I'm gonna guess... An actual street trash can.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: I mean, hers is a street trash. It's the one
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: you put out on the front stoop.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: No, no, no. That's not a thing.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: It's got a lid and everything. Like it's a street
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: trash can.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: In her kitchen. No, it's not an indoor trash can.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: I was like, what the hell is going on?
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: Not like a kitchen trash can or like a regular
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: metal trash can.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: All of these characters just woke up on earth. None
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: of them have Before this movie started.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: And even just real world, like couldn't the props guy
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: run to target and like pick up a kitchen trash can?
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Like just hang on guys. Give me like 20 minutes.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: I'll be right back. This looks ridiculous. Hold on. I'll
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: be right back.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Now we can't have this inside. Not in the budget.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: I love it so much.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: We focused on it because she comes back to get
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: her like God books out of the trash can. So
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: it's not even like a one shot. Like we see
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: it like three different times where she's like, making use
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: of this giant metal trash can.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: It's the type of trash can that you don't want
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: to take things out of once you put them in.
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: There's like waste bin type trash cans where it's like, okay,
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: this is all like papers and office materials.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: It's recyclable.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: It's fun. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: I can, if I throw out my book, my Christian
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: books in a fury and then I want them back, it's,
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: there's nothing gross. I don't have to wash them or anything,
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: but that's not the type of trash can this is.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that one is old school. That one is Oscar
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: lives in there and it's covered in slime and he's
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: going to pop his head out and be like, you're
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: so stupid and he's right. Then like, she's just not
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: paying attention. I would seek out Oscar. Cause I feel
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: like he's the guy who's got a plan. Like.
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: I'll be a great spin. If the movie with her
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: actually like finding Oscar, the grouch.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I think it would be cool to get more
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: IP in there.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: Yeah. I am all for that because I, again, I'm
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: always sold on Oscar. I like his attitude. He's got
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: a good outlook on life. Like, I feel like if
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: you're going to worship someone, Oscar, the grouch, that's the
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: way to go. Yeah. I don't know. I, I don't
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: want to, I don't want to overdo it, but anything
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: else you want. I mean, I, am I the only
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: one that has issues with her purple leggings and her
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: orange coat? Like, Oh, it's, it's, I'm a dude. And
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: I'm just like, what are you wearing lady?
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Like it's very, it's Disney channel.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: It's very like Disney channel.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: It is very Hannah Montana. I'll give you.
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: And you know what? That's kind of the universe of
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: this movie. Yeah.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: It's not that good. Hold on a minute. I watch
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: a lot of quality Disney Channel programming and it is
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: a little above this.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: I think this is a universe where Hannah Montana is real.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: That's so funny.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: And people are fooled by her.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: Miley, have you seen Hannah? What's going on? She's over
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: there with some leggings on. Hold on.
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: Let me.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: That was on the TV, like Hannah Montana singing was
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: on the TV before the Christian Mingle commercial. I'd be like, yeah. Yeah,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: that makes sense.
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: Yeah. It's also when she comes back and throws her
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: Bible books in the trash and then picks them back
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: up again. That's when I every time start to feel like, oh,
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: we're nearing the end.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: And that's wrong.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: Beginning number one of seven.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: It's just.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Then we think we're going to get to the like, well, okay,
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: she's decided that she doesn't need this doofus, but she
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: wants God in her life. And I'm like, okay, that's fine. Like, again,
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: if we're in this movie, I expect that's kind of
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: where we're going in some way, shape or form. So
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: I'm like, good. That's her learning a lesson. It's not
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: about this dumb ass guy. It's about, you know, finding
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: something spiritual in your life.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: The lesson she's learning is I have to be myself
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: by changing myself. Yes. And that's beautiful.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Even though he said, be yourself. And then he judged
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: her for her being herself. And then she didn't be herself.
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: And that's when she learned how.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: To- I don't need that guy.
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: I can change myself for me for no reason.
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's awesome. I can listen to these people in
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: this weird storefront church that I'm like, any church in
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: a storefront is shady. I'm sorry. I don't know what's
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: going on in there, but that don't look like a church.
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: That looks like it used to be like a TJ Maxx.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: And now it's a church and something shady is going
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: on in there.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Listen, I'm interested in going to that service. That sounds great.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: It does have better music. I'll give you that. And
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: there's only so many times I can watch Lacey clap
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: off beat because that is maybe my favorite moment. She's
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: just right there and everybody else. It'd be different if
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: she was by herself. You could even time it up
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: after the fact. But no, she's with other people and
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: they're all on the beat. Poor Lacey.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: But that character's never heard music.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Warning.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: She, she, I mean, she has a metal trash can
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: in her house. Obviously she doesn't know how to clap.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: She's doing her absolute best. She's like an alien that
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: just got to earth. She's doing so much.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: People wear purple leggings and big bows on their hands, right?
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: That's how humans are, right?
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: She hatched from an egg. She watched an episode of
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: Hannah Montana.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Yeah. And, uh, yeah.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: She's getting it together man i think this may be
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: more of an alien story that we're overlooking which.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Yeah paul wood's definitely an alien everyone.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: He does not seem like he belongs on this planet
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: at all yeah of the other many indians along the
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: way we definitely get um kel kel shows up and
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: that is the moment when she grabs his hand i
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: was like ah now she's all religiousy but i was
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: like This is the point when I literally said, sometimes
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: God sticks it in and breaks it off, doesn't he?
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: Because this is bullshit. It's like you can be the
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: most devout Christian and sometimes shit ain't going to go
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: your way.
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: Yeah, for Kel Kels? Oh, well, no, for.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: For our.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: Girl who likes that she's done all of this and
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: changed her life and is pretending like it's for herself.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: But really, she's just kind of trying to get in
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: good with this guy. And then not only is he
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: not going to be with you, but he's with the
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: one girl that you knew was trying to steal him
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: from you anyway. I was like, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: And also, he's like so clearly not into Kel-Kels, which
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: is also just bad for everyone. It's like you can
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: tell he's kind of like, yeah, well, we're together now,
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: I guess.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: And it's like my mom says I like her. So
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: I guess I do. I don't question mom because she's
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: Morgan Fairchild. So what am I going to do?
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: I'm doing.
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Yeah. So she gets in a fight with God. He
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: makes it rain on her. I do like that. She's
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: angrily like, she's like giving him like jokes and one
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: liners and stuff. I do like she's, she's kind of,
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: she's ribbing God a little bit.
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: I like that.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: It's the most character she has really.
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: She's just, just when she gets a little bit violent,
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: that's when she shines in this movie.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: So the letter from Mexico shows up.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Your life was changed as well at that point, I'm assuming.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: With the voiceover for that girl that I'm like, is
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: that even the right accent? I feel like the girl's
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: doing a different accent.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: It is tough.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: And the thing is, you know that girl lives in
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Carmel and she has not a lick of Spanish accent.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: It is tough. It's very....
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Yeah and i feel bad for her because that kid
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: she's doing what she can once again it's not her fault.
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: Loving loving it for her i'd get more rolls under
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: your belt like no.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Yeah she didn't even get paid she's just there for
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: crafty for the day and she's all set she's she's
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: good i'm going home now i got a free sandwich.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: Yeah so she gets this whole letter that's like thank
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: you for bringing god to my town.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: Yeah it's not great it's very much so a person
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: being like thanks so much for being white at me
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: yeah oh god when you were white at me i
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: wish it could happen today.
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: And again why her i was like thank you woman
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: who came by for a day and a half you
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: saved our village by putting a bell up like i
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: don't know it was so like three things didn't add
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: up in that letter and i was like what.
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: Is that little girl bonded way more with kelkels.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: You would think but she didn't seem to she loves
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: some lacy yeah she did tackle her when she got
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: there essentially she's just like ah white girl come here
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: i need to hug you like.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Yeah it's pretty wild this is the part of the
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: movie where you go like oh my god.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: You well at that point you're like where are we
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: going like i thought i knew where we were going
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: but i thought it was ending yeah like i i
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: assumed she was going to be teaching by the end
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: of it because we laid the groundwork on that i
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: didn't know we were going back to mexico but but
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: I guess we laid the groundwork with this little girl too.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: So we got to make it all come together.
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: So then she goes back to Mexico to start teaching.
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: And is there for like, I assume a second. Like
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: it makes it look like she's there doing that for
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: a while.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: Well, it's like another, cause it's like the next Christmas, right?
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: Cause we're at least a year later. So yeah. And
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: don't worry. She brought her cookie jar. That's the most
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: important thing about this movie is she brought her cookie
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: jar from home to Mexico.
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: It's just important.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: Cause it's very important. I was like, you really specifically
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: put that in.
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Corbin, I don't know what you're even going for there, but.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: He is tying it all together with that damn cookie jar, man.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: It's wild.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: And yeah, no, it's the next.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Yeah, there's. And then she's like kind of recreated herself
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: and she has like a new life there. She's cool now.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: A new life that is exactly what her ex would
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: have wanted her to be. And only interacting with people
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: her ex introduced her to.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: And then. That'll show him. And then he's there. He's
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: there and he's like. You'll never guess. I dumped Kel-Kels.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: And it's like, that's not.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: Turns out you were right. I'm an idiot. Like, yeah,
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: I've been saying that this whole movie. And you're from space.
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: And he was just like, yeah, I just threw out Kel-Kels.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: I don't care. And it's like, all right. He's like,
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: now that you're not yourself even a little bit and
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: kind of just doing exactly what I was doing, I'm
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: interested and I want this.
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, and they cut to a close up of
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: the bell, which looks like it's about to fall off.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: They did the shittiest job I have ever... It is
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: barely up there with a piece of rope. Like, it
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: is the worst. I was like, Dad, Papa, if you will,
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: you need to get back up there. And it just
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: looked terrible. I was like, dude, we've got one job.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: They're only experiences with wood. They don't work with mixed metal.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: This rope just confounds me. I can't handle it.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I don't do that.
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: Okay, so this isn't wood.
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: What am I doing here? This whole trip is just
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: a lie.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Yeah. And then I guess happy ending, I guess.
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: My favorite shot of the entire ending is, you know,
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: he takes her to a big giant Christmas tree and
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: he either kisses her or proposes to her or does
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: something that's like, I want to be with you because
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: you're not you anymore.
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: And then they.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: Just cut to a guy working on the tree who
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: just smiles at them and watches them kiss for like
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: three seconds.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Way too long. It's awesome.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: I mean, sometimes you just got to creepily watch people
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: make out while you're decorating a Christmas tree. It's part
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: of the holiday festivities.
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: It's one of my favorite holidays.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Well, then we also get our mid-credits scene where Samuel L.
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: Jackson shows up and recruits her to be in the Avengers.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: They do come back with that weird little like, one
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: more joke because we're just knocking them out of the
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: park here. We've got one more for you. Just hang
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: in there.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it is up. a really interesting cinematic experience. Yeah.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: It's, it's an experience. All right. So have you just to,
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: because I came across this today, have you read the
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: notes in IMDb? Because there's not many, but there's one
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: that I'm just like, Oh, this kind of explains it all.
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't want to know.
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: So according, if you believe IMDb, which obviously is the,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: the top pinnacle of truth and all the facts. Corey Feldman,
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: who was Lacey's spiritual advisor at the time, pleaded with
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: her to not do this movie and do The Lost
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Tree instead. She ended up doing both. There's so many
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: things in that sentence.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: The spiritual advisor?
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: I don't know that he needs to be advising anyone.
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: Like I've seen enough of Corey over the years to
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: know he don't know what's going on. He's traumatized and
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: I feel bad for him. But at the same time,
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: he's also leaning into some crazy that I don't even
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: know what is going on.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Also, she seems so normal. Yeah, I actually wouldn't have
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: a spiritual advisor, if I'm being totally honest.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: And specifically, a guy who travels around with a bunch
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: of girls who he calls his angels doesn't necessarily make
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: you a spiritual advisor, because that is his rock show,
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: by the way, if you haven't seen it.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: It's special. He's a special, special character. So I can
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: only hope that's a lie.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: And the other movie is called what?
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: It says The Lost Tree. So I guess we know
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: what's going on the list now.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: You think that he and the two of them were
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: in The Lost Tree together? Because if that's true, I'll
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: be watching that movie immediately.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: I think you're going to be watching it anyway. Let's
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: be real.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Oh, it's a horror drama. Interesting.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: And she did both. So she's okay with horror, but
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: still likes the Lord.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: And that's beautiful. That's well-rounded.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: That's everything. Yeah. I'm all for that, but I don't
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: want to listen to anything Corey has to say.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: He produced it? I don't know what he did on it.
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: I don't know if he's... I can't find his involvement
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: in it, but that's even funnier if he wasn't.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he just was like, I just prefer this?
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I guess his involvement is that he was
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: her spiritual advisor.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: Sure. And he was like, do this. Okay, well, gotta
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: see that next. Okay, this is really interesting to me.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: I don't know that he had any part in this movie.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: No, I think he just.
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: He's just her spiritual advisor. And maybe also her manager
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: at this point. I don't know.
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I think we should try to call him up
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: and see if he's taking new clients.
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Do you really want that?
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: I need to be spiritually advised.
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: Oh, I'm so worried about you now. I'm concerned. We
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: can find you many other low-level Hollywood people to listen
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: to before Corey. Like, Corey's done some weird stuff over
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: the years.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Well, yeah.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: His dancing, the most of which, really, but.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: love it yeah there's some really good daytime um talk
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: show performances yeah yeah.
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: Or is i mean just as epic dancing with the
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: stars moments that we got recently that i was like
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: oh you are not gonna make it past the first
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: week oh look look who got kicked out first.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: One way to see the mormon housewives and that's.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: Huge so what have you taken from this fine film
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: What is your spiritual journey led you to and what
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: have you learned from the five or six different messages
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: that this was selling us?
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I've learned the more the merrier, meaning
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: like more messages, the better, more endings, the better. Yeah.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I think another thing I've learned is if you change yourself,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: he'll love you. Yeah.
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: That is important, obviously.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and I also learned that it's actually really deceitful
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: to be kind of Christian and not super Christian.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: And as I said, how dare you try to learn
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: and better yourself? We'll have none of that in this religion.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: It's actually such a lose lose. Cause it's like, don't
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: you want me to be more Christian? It's just a
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: lose lose.
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: She gave him that sales pitch and it was like
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: pretty good.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: Actually.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: I'm listening. That's the best part of the screenplay possibly
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: is like, she lays that out for him. And like,
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: I'm like, okay. Yeah. Even if I was this jackass,
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: you've got a point. Like, yes, that's a good. Nope. Nope. Yeah.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: It's, Such a non-issue, and I love that the movie
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: is built off of things that are just non-issues.
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I've learned a lot from this movie. I've learned
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: your first option is always the way to go. Never,
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: ever try to expand your options.
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Never date again. You get one person.
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: You get one person, and even if they give you
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: the ick on the first date, that's who you're in
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: love with now.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: You know, obviously, like.
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: if you think something's, if you're, if you're thinking something's ending, right.
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: It's not, there are 19, 20 more.
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: It's the return of the King and we've got 28
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: more minutes to wrap up this movie. So yeah.
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: And then, oh gosh, what else? I mean, I guess
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: that Christian Mingle is a website that, that connects like-minded
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: Christians who want to find love and all their commercials
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: use real customers.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: That's something I learned.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: When you can't handle plenty of fish, there's always Christian Mingle.
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: Yes, exactly. Oh, and another good message is that everyone
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: around you is super Christian. If you look hard enough. Yes.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: That's true. Even if they don't tell you, they might
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: be secret Christians.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: Everyone around you is extremely Christian and secret about it.
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: And they're not telling you. Yeah.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: And it's not her style. That is not her style.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. That is not her style.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: Wearing a cross. That is definitely not her style.
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Yeah. And then, gosh, is.
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: There anything else?
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Um, Oh, you can't take pills to make your hair.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: Or maybe you can.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: I don't know because we dropped that. We never, we
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: don't know what happened to Jay Peterman. We don't know
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: if Stephen Tobolasky, he might have a big long mane
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: of hair now. We don't know. We never went back there.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: You know, that's for the sequel.
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: She quit her job and therefore so did we, the audience.
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: We quit her job as well.
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but she found a better one in Mexico, I
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: guess is what you do. You leave your job. And
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: you go her evil job where she made real money
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: and you go be a poor teacher in Mexico. And
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: luckily that town almost fell down. So it doesn't cost
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: much to live there.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Yeah. And they, and they love her for no reason.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: They love, they love when people come in and kind
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: of are just there. Yeah. They love it for no
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: reason at all.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: Not that she's the white savior at all. Nope.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: Not at all.
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: Yeah. wild.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: So many lessons.
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: It was definitely a journey that I was not prepared for.
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: And yet I'm so glad I went on it.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, it's underrated.
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it really is.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. How much do
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: you need to sell this to other people? And I
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: know you in particular have sold it to many people.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: So.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: It's it's yeah it's not appreciated on the level a
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: couple of levels I feel like that it probably should.
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: Be yeah I made a guy watch this on our
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: first date as a test yeah as like a I
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: mean I kind of thought we were going to turn
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: it on and then not watch the whole thing but
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: we ended up watching the whole thing and yeah you
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: gotta you gotta I was like if you don't fuck
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: with this then you're not gonna like anything about me.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: Yeah I did that but it was Peter Jackson's brain
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: dead And the girl pretended to like it. And only
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: it was like years later that I talked to her
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: and she was like, oh, no, that was a nightmare.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: I hated that. I was like, oh, no wonder we're
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: not together. I'll be damned. So, yeah, you got to
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: throw those tests out there and see where they land. Yeah.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Yeah. That's so funny.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: Well, thank you for suggesting this and going on this
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: religious journey that we've all gone on together. Yeah, of course.
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: I'm, I'm really hoping we get a sequel in the
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: next 10 or 15 years. Yeah.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: Lacey's got to come back around. I mean, she's got
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: a lot to do. Like she's out there knocking these
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: movies out. So like, she's got to work it into
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: her schedule.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: But so many movies she's working.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: She is. I mean, that's, it is a fascinating part
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: of the industry that did not exist. Like, between your
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: Hallmark romance and your Christmas movies, it's like a third
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: of what's being made now that is just employing most
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: of the people out there that aren't real big money people.
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: They're just making a living now. And it's those movies.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: God bless them. Like we love finding Christmas from the
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: Hallmark channel. Like we love the Hallmark channel in this house.
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: I feel like it's the same, like almost like business
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: structure as like soap operas, because soap operas and daytime TV,
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: it's like, They have so.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Much to do.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: They have so many pages to memorize every day. It's like, go, go, go, go, go.
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: But it's just like a specific, slightly different thing than
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: other TV.
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: It's just throwing you in the deep end. It's just like, look,
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: we got to shoot this movie. We got a week
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: and a half. So get to it. And if you
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: do five or six of these, you're like, okay, I
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: know how to make a movie now. Not necessarily a
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: good one, but I know the steps involved. I know
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: the basic things I need to do.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: And the thing is, good is subjective. Because to me,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: this is a very good movie. But is it good?
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: It's enjoyable on a level. You got to set your levels.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: You got to reset your levels every time you watch
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: a movie.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: To me, something is good if I like it. So
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: to me, Olive Garden is good. But is it Italian food?
- 1:31:35Speaker 2: No.
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: You know, there are differences of taste.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: It's no steak and cake, but it's pretty good.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: It's no steak and cake.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: But next time we go, I'm going to see if
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: I can order steaks and cakes for the table and
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: then they'll be upset at me because they won't have that.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Let's do a Christian Mingle pop-up restaurant of steak and cake.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: Yes. I would go there. Like that, I mean.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: And you can't order just a little bit.
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: You can't be like, can I have a slice of
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: cake and one steak?
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: No, you get full cake, steak, and glass of water.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Don't be ordering a Coke. Don't be looking for a beer.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: You're not getting any of this.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: You enjoy your water and choke down that cake, damn you.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Choke it down.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: Choke down that dry cake. That's what I always say.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: That's, yeah, words to live by. So.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: What is the best way, if they've not, you know,
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: just had their life changed and they're not even going
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: to watch any more podcasts anymore. But if they want
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: to go find an awesome podcast out there in the world,
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: what is the best way for them to find you?
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: Oh, well, our podcast is called Sid and Olivia Talk Shit.
