- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:17Welcome to Watch Your Least Favorite Scary Movie, The
- 0:19podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the
- 0:22absurd in all of our favorite. And least favorite?
- 0:25Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:27movie rightfully has this fan base even.
- 0:29If we don't always get. It my name's Travis, my name's
- 0:31Jesse and welcome everybody, because today we do have
- 0:35openings. We have a vacancy today because
- 0:38we're we're talking about vacancy today.
- 0:40Oh boy, that's right, baby. We are talking about the Luke
- 0:43Wilson, Kate Beckinsale powerhouse of a film that came
- 0:47out in 2007. Vacancy.
- 0:49If you looked at our schedule and you weren't aware that this
- 0:52was a movie that existed, and you're like, oh, they're just
- 0:55going to have a free week with no episode.
- 0:58No, no. Yeah, Oh my God, I didn't even
- 1:01think of. That, yeah.
- 1:03But strangely, in 2007. Yeah, like the big like we had
- 1:08to go back to 2007 this. Week.
- 1:10Just a process. Yeah, just to process
- 1:12everything. Yeah, You know, that is a funny
- 1:15thing. I I'm realizing that people
- 1:17don't know what this movie is. Yeah.
- 1:19And I, I'm shocked at that because this is a movie that was
- 1:22pretty big back in our time. You know, I remember it having
- 1:26like a pretty popular reaction at least.
- 1:29So I'm, I'm, I'm kind of shocked that people aren't aware of this
- 1:32one, but I guess. Remember it, but I don't
- 1:35remember it being like huge. It's one of those that you bring
- 1:38it up now and people go, yeah. Yeah, I mean, it wasn't like a
- 1:41huge, huge movie, but people that I was friends with that
- 1:45aren't into this type of movie watched it with me.
- 1:48So, Luke. Wilson Really.
- 1:50Yeah. Huh.
- 1:52OK, well, yeah, we're gonna talk about it.
- 1:54We're gonna familiarize all y'all with this.
- 1:58Movie all y'all we're getting we're getting Appalachian with
- 2:02it, but. Before we get there, we're gonna
- 2:06go to our announcements. Do we have any?
- 2:10OK, so this is the start of a new month.
- 2:14At the end of the last month, we had our Patreon bonus episode,
- 2:17which we're gonna be recording that later today, and we're
- 2:20doing the new Jason Voorhees short film.
- 2:23Yeah, so. We're.
- 2:25So that's there now watch and talk.
- 2:27Yeah. By the time you're listening to
- 2:29this, that'll be available to listen to.
- 2:31Yeah, for for our budget to your patrons.
- 2:35And if you want to, instead of just one more dollar a month, $6
- 2:39a month, you get all the perks of being a budget to your
- 2:41patron. But if you want to spend $5 just
- 2:43one time, you can listen to that episode.
- 2:46Cuz you gotta listen to that Dang Jason, what he's up to
- 2:49recently. Yeah, the.
- 2:50Blabbermouth Jason Voorgies. Yeah, All right, cool.
- 2:53Well, then I have our poll results for last week's movie.
- 2:56Last week we. I came up with the poll if you
- 2:59guys couldn't. Well, yeah, we discussed Texas
- 3:02Chainsaw 3D and we just wanted to ask everybody.
- 3:06And did Texas Chainsaw 3D do its thing cuz?
- 3:10And 75% of y'all said yeah, welcome to Texas.
- 3:14Yeah, welcome to Texas. And 25% said no, please leave
- 3:18Texas. Out Get the fuck out of Texas.
- 3:21Yeah, go on, get Well, I'm going to stay because I'm welcome to
- 3:27the Texas motherfucker I like. That movie I'm also welcome to
- 3:30Texas, motherfucker. So.
- 3:32We are welcome to Texas, motherfuckers.
- 3:34We like Texas Chainsaw 3D. Come fight us.
- 3:37If you want to know why, go listen to that episode if you
- 3:40haven't already, give. Olivia, another chance.
- 3:42Give it a shot, guys. So like, it's not that bad.
- 3:44If you watched it a long time ago, people come around, things
- 3:48have changed. It's been people say 12 years.
- 3:51People have said they have. OK, man, we're already off to a
- 3:56weird start to what is gonna end up being a weird month on this
- 3:59show. This is if you haven't seen the
- 4:02schedule yet. We are very excited about the
- 4:06vibes, except for maybe the black hole.
- 4:09That will be our Texas chance. All week we got sorry.
- 4:12We got big number to 300. Yeah, episode 300 coming up this
- 4:15month. No, Yeah, that's right, baby.
- 4:19Check that schedule. OK, so yeah, let's just get on
- 4:22into this then let's talk about vacancy.
- 4:25So Vacancy. Released 4/20/2007.
- 4:29Baby, they knew what they were doing.
- 4:31Hell yeah. If you would like to watch it,
- 4:34well, we watched it on our DVD because there is no place to
- 4:37stream it. Oh, I mean you like if you are
- 4:41on a streaming service. But you can rent it on Apple TV,
- 4:44YouTube, Amazon or Fandango at home.
- 4:47OK. Written by Mark L Smith,
- 4:50directed by Nimrod and Towel, music by Paul Hasslinger and
- 4:54special effects makeup by Chris Wakowiak.
- 4:58Starring Kate Beckinsale as Amy, Luke Wilson as David, Frank
- 5:03Welley as Mason, or as I would like to call him the manager
- 5:06because we never really get his name, I don't think.
- 5:08Yeah, I was. I was trying to find an opening
- 5:11quote for this and I was like who the fuck is Mason?
- 5:14Yeah, I don't think they ever actually said it in the movie.
- 5:16Yeah, by the way, in my opening quote, if you guys couldn't
- 5:19tell, it was the bell. Yeah, yeah, Ethan Embry as
- 5:25mechanic and Scott Anderson as killer.
- 5:29Yeah. See, they didn't get me.
- 5:30We never find out that the whole time in my notes, he was either
- 5:34Clerk or Frank. So the actor's name?
- 5:38Yeah, he's never Mason, that's not.
- 5:41Me, I just I wrote him as manager the entire time.
- 5:44No, he wasn't even manager for me.
- 5:46He was, he said. He said he was a manager.
- 5:48I know that much. At least.
- 5:49But he also said that they would be OK to stay the night.
- 5:52That's right, he said. A lot of things, he made a lot
- 5:55of statements out there. We don't know how much of it's
- 5:57true. We got a nice little cast for
- 6:00this. I think it's a small cast, but
- 6:01we've got some powerhouses right here.
- 6:03Yeah, I'm really pleased to talk about Luke Wilson for once.
- 6:06Can I ask you a question? I know we're not in the
- 6:08discussion portion yet but I think this is really important
- 6:10for the vibes of our podcast. True.
- 6:12Is this a single location movie? I actually thought about this
- 6:15myself last night. Because we had this argument
- 6:18about olds. Now, if I debate myself, old
- 6:21Travis, I would say no. But Travis today has grown.
- 6:26And I think that he would admit that this is probably a single
- 6:29location movie because we start off with them in this one little
- 6:34snippet of area right here. And it's all pretty much
- 6:37contained within the two mile radius.
- 6:39Yeah, and it's pretty much entirely at that motel and gas
- 6:42station. So yeah, I think I would call
- 6:44this a single location. OK.
- 6:45I I would too. I would land on it like it's on
- 6:48the broader end of the spectrum. Like, you know, a single
- 6:51location is a circle. That's the type of graphic I
- 6:53assume that a single location should be because it's single
- 6:57table. Yeah, it would be like towards
- 6:59the perimeter of the circle. True.
- 7:01No, but it would still be within that circle.
- 7:04Don't take this as me budging on movies like The Descendant or
- 7:06old because those spent a lot of time at other places not.
- 7:10That. Much, but this one right here.
- 7:12I'll I'll give it to you. This is a single location for
- 7:15sure. OK, so I have the movies Budget.
- 7:19Would you like to play this little game we call Budget or
- 7:21Bucktead that did not go the way we always do it?
- 7:26I took in a breath and. Like.
- 7:28My heart skipped a beat because I couldn't do.
- 7:32This too too off script here. My body is out of.
- 7:36Source now. OK, well, let's, let's correct.
- 7:39Let's make things all right and well.
- 7:41All right, it's time for our favorite game on the show.
- 7:43Budget or budget? I can't breathe, man.
- 7:49Yeah, we're off to a hot start this month.
- 7:54Listen. Kay Beckinsale, huge name.
- 7:56Luke Wilson, big name. He's still in the shadow of his
- 8:00brother, unfortunately. At this point I think he's made
- 8:03a name for himself, but Owen reigned supreme.
- 8:05No, we're going to have to play. Could Owen do this later?
- 8:09And we'll explain. The rules for that everybody.
- 8:11It sounds pretty self-explanatory, but there's
- 8:13rules. Ethan Embry.
- 8:18He was just a few years past being Bobby Ray in Sweet Home
- 8:22Alabama. Like these are all decent name.
- 8:25Frank Whaley. I don't know him, but he's.
- 8:29With that guy for me, but I still think it's bug Ted.
- 8:36But I'm going to say like higher bug Ted.
- 8:38OK, well Jesse, you would be shocked.
- 8:41This is a budget movie. The budget being 19,000,000.
- 8:46Wow. I mean, there was like a lot of
- 8:48such stuff they had to do and they destroyed a lot of things
- 8:52with cars. They did, yeah.
- 8:54There was a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes with this
- 8:57thing opening box office 7.6 million.
- 9:00Worldwide gross 35.4 million. That's not what you want.
- 9:05No, but this is, I think, at that era where you could still
- 9:11make a buck back on home media and stuff like that.
- 9:14So I think it made it OK. IMDb score.
- 9:18IMDb score, 6.2 out of 10. OK.
- 9:23Pretty good. Yeah.
- 9:23Yeah. All right.
- 9:25So I have three other movies that released in 2007.
- 9:27I do have a theme in common with this movie.
- 9:31It's all we're we're finding disturbing VHS tapes with really
- 9:37scary videos in them. OK.
- 9:40Movie #1. I'm surprised that this is such
- 9:42a common theme in 2007. Yeah, I know.
- 9:45Me too. So movie number one saw four,
- 9:48obviously. Oh yeah.
- 9:51Yeah, we get the tapes of Billy, and then he does the
- 9:53demonstrations of how you're gonna die in this trap, which
- 9:57it's pretty terrifying if you ask.
- 9:59Me tried to dog shame Talia the other day because she was just
- 10:04like she didn't have, she didn't have the household brain cell
- 10:09that day. As we've discussed, we have a
- 10:10brain cell that we passed between the five of us and she
- 10:13was just running and doing everything and in the process
- 10:16like destroying my ceramic frogs out front.
- 10:20She she jumped up into the car while I was still holding the
- 10:23leash a good distance from the car, so she like caught herself
- 10:26midair. And yeah, she wildly coyote an
- 10:29entrance into the car. Yep, and I just and Travis was
- 10:31like, you need to slow down. And I looked at her and was
- 10:33like, did you learn nothing from Lieutenant Riggs game?
- 10:37We just watched that goddamn movie.
- 10:39We did. And and you know what she did
- 10:41her ears back. She was like, oh shit, that's a
- 10:42good point. Yeah, threatened her with a saw
- 10:44trap. Well, it's not a good time.
- 10:46So saw her release October 26th, 2007.
- 10:49Budget of $10 million, worldwide gross $139 million.
- 10:54IMDb 5.9. I'm glad that that one is
- 10:59decently rated on there. I wish it was a little bit
- 11:01higher, but I think like. I think that .1 to 6 would have
- 11:05been appropriate right there. Movie #2 I know I always say
- 11:09this. Probably not how it's supposed
- 11:11to be said based off of the region, but Poughkeepsie Tapes.
- 11:16I know it's Poughkeepsie. Is that how people usually say
- 11:19it? I like Poughkeepsie.
- 11:21Poughkeepsie. Yeah.
- 11:24Poughkeepsie, yeah. I mean, that's the, that's the
- 11:26killer. He like he plays for
- 11:28Poughkeepsie. He does.
- 11:30I'm shocked you haven't picked that as a birthday movie for
- 11:33yourself at any point. It will come soon.
- 11:35I like that movie. It's a very scary movie to me
- 11:37and lots of disturbing found footage in that one for sure.
- 11:41And that movie actually released one week later from this one,
- 11:45April 27th, 2007. I don't have any of the
- 11:49financial information for this, but also 5.9 on IMDb.
- 11:54That one I'm a little less surprised about the score
- 11:57because I feel like it is pretty divisive amongst the people who
- 12:00do know about it. I don't feel like it's a super
- 12:03well known one, but it is kind of, it kind of gets passed
- 12:06around in those like most disturbing horror movies you've
- 12:09probably never heard. Of it's one of those, well, it
- 12:12was one of those movies that it didn't release for so long and
- 12:17people were passing around. I, if I remember correctly, like
- 12:20bootlegged copies of it before. Because I think it only had
- 12:25like, I think at this time in April 27th, 2007, it had like a
- 12:29temporary release on like DIRECTV or something like that.
- 12:32I can't remember. I don't know.
- 12:33Yeah. It was hard to find for a bit.
- 12:35And then it finally actually made its way out back in like
- 12:382014, 2015, something like that. I don't know anything about like
- 12:42I didn't hear about it until we were together, which was
- 12:44obviously a few years later and you were like, hey, we should
- 12:47try and find this creepy movie. Yeah, it was a good time.
- 12:50I like it. We'll we'll talk about it
- 12:51eventually, I'm sure. You had such like romantic date
- 12:54ideas for us. Yeah, man, I came in hot.
- 12:57No, that one we watched after we moved in together.
- 12:59Once we moved in together, I was like, OK, I think I could maybe
- 13:01start throwing on some freaky shit.
- 13:03This coming from the man who we started watching Human Centipede
- 13:082 very early on in the relationship.
- 13:10It's like the first month of dating right there.
- 13:12Bad. Don't recommend people.
- 13:14Yeah, you ended up cutting it off, but.
- 13:16OK, final movie. Paranormal Activity.
- 13:19I was, I'm just thinking like we need to get on with the
- 13:22Paranormal Activity series. It won't happen in September and
- 13:27unlikely in October, but maybe. I was actually thinking that
- 13:30too. Maybe in November. 4 is next.
- 13:31Yeah, it was a pretty solid 1. I remember I like 4 a lot.
- 13:34Yeah. So Paranormal Activity released
- 13:36October 16th, 2007, $15,000 budget, $193 million gross.
- 13:43This thing went toe to toe is software and it beat it.
- 13:46It came out one week, No 10 days earlier.
- 13:49And it made Blumhouse what it is today.
- 13:51It is, yeah. It is the movie that made
- 13:53Blumhouse. Which it now has saw.
- 13:56So we've got Oh my God, the. Connection.
- 13:59Yeah. IMDb.
- 14:01I can't remember if I said, but 6.3 out of 10, yeah.
- 14:04So yeah, that's the highest out of them here.
- 14:07Fuck Mika. Alright, it's up to you, my
- 14:09obligatory. Yeah, Mika Mika's a dirtbag.
- 14:13Shit. OK, so I've got our tagline's
- 14:16the one on the poster. Once you're in, there's no way
- 14:19out. There's a couple ways out,
- 14:22actually. I.
- 14:23Assume they probably didn't want to deal with the lawsuit but
- 14:28like you can check out anytime you like but you can never
- 14:31leave. Oh my God, that is our tagline
- 14:35for this movie. Do we want to deal with the
- 14:37lawsuit? Take it like, bring it.
- 14:40We need to do the Spirit Halloween version of this right?
- 14:45What does that mean? Like where it's very obvious
- 14:49what like you see like red hatted plumber man.
- 14:52Oh yeah, I gotcha. We'll think on it.
- 14:55We'll think on it. OK.
- 14:55We don't. We don't do that section until
- 14:57the end of the show. True.
- 14:58Yeah, yeah. OK, OK, two more.
- 15:01How can you escape dot dot dot if they can see everything?
- 15:08Yeah. I mean, we have to watch and
- 15:10find out, I guess. Yeah.
- 15:11Final one. Once you've checked in dot dot
- 15:14dot, the terror begins. That's not bad.
- 15:19That's not too bad. I I mean, honestly, the one that
- 15:22you had is like perfect. I can't wait for that.
- 15:25Like that. That should have been the
- 15:27tagline for this. Yeah, I just feel like the
- 15:29Eagles probably wouldn't endorse that.
- 15:31No, probably not. Yeah.
- 15:34OK, so let's do some fun facts. So this was originally set in
- 15:39New Mexico. It was based off of Mark L
- 15:41Smith's trips that he would do with his wife.
- 15:43They had some kind of ranch that they lived on and I think
- 15:48maintained, and then they had like some like offseason for
- 15:52months. So they would use that time to
- 15:54travel and apparently like places like New Mexico, they
- 15:57would have these long stretches of Rd. where they would see all
- 16:00of these motels and they would just see that they were
- 16:03completely empty. And they would just think to
- 16:05themselves like, how are these places still operating?
- 16:08How are they open? When you started that little
- 16:13sentence story, whatever, I thought it was going to end in a
- 16:17very different way because you said they had a ranch and in the
- 16:19offseason. They would like, make snuff
- 16:22films, yeah. And that's where I thought you
- 16:24were going with that. So I'm glad that's not the case.
- 16:27I thought it was going to be based off of their experiences
- 16:28too, but no, it's just like seeing all that stuff and just
- 16:31like thinking to yourself. Yeah, they just get the inspir.
- 16:34Yeah. Like you start to tell yourself
- 16:36a story like that. Yeah, so the motel for this
- 16:41movie was actually built on a sound stage.
- 16:43It was the one that Sony's a lot.
- 16:46It was the very same place where they filmed The Wizard of Oz.
- 16:49How cool. Yeah.
- 16:50Which I think that's kind of amazing that they still have
- 16:54that there for people can operate.
- 16:56And like, I would be saying that to everybody, too.
- 16:58Like I filmed my movie where Wizard of Oz was filmed.
- 17:00Like, what did you do? Yeah, you know, I had Luke
- 17:03Wilson. And who did you have?
- 17:06Owen Oh, the third Wilson Nobody ever talks about the third.
- 17:11Wilson Yeah. So yeah, they like.
- 17:15So with it being freshly built, they had to like really dirty
- 17:18things up. Like everything in the set there
- 17:21is new, but they had to make it grimy, which when you look at
- 17:25this hotel or motel excuse. Me.
- 17:27It is, yeah. It's a grimy.
- 17:30It is a motel. They had to like age everything
- 17:32down, make it look like it was from the 60s.
- 17:35They did a really good job. I imagine them taking a vacuum
- 17:39cleaner and like instead of sucking things up, they just
- 17:42like yeah. Yeah, honestly, that would
- 17:45actually be really effective. They used the same
- 17:47cinematographer as the guy that shot Pulp Fiction and Reservoir
- 17:51Dogs. Oh cool.
- 17:52Yeah, really cool. The guy's super established.
- 17:54You know what? There were some shots that I was
- 17:57like, I made notes. I was like, Dang, that's a
- 17:58fucking cool shot. Yeah, the guy did a great job.
- 18:01They really wanted to go for like a noir style film and they
- 18:05wanted to use some really harsh lighting.
- 18:07OK. Also that's real fun because at
- 18:10the beginning, like the opening credit, they morphed from like
- 18:13in Vertigo shot to a shining shot.
- 18:17So what they did, yeah. So that Norbit, I was like, OK,
- 18:22I'm glad that that was very much intentional.
- 18:24Yeah, their biggest in. Vertigo were in Vertigo in
- 18:28Vertigo was Vertigo poster Vertigo's the movie.
- 18:31Vertigo's the movie. Yeah, yeah, they they were
- 18:34really going for that Hitchcock style.
- 18:36Yeah, OK. That's what.
- 18:37They they really did use him for influence, right?
- 18:40OK, well, it came across. Yeah.
- 18:42I mean, also, you think of like the hotel here.
- 18:43You got Norman Bates also. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:46And like they would do things like they would apply like shaky
- 18:48Cam and stuff like that to convey tenseness of the scenes.
- 18:53The snuff films were all like that was the first thing that
- 18:56they filmed for this movie. And the way that they went about
- 18:59doing it, they actually just they took the motel room that
- 19:02they had and they rigged it with cameras all around like we see
- 19:05in the stuff films here. And they very loosely blocked
- 19:09the scene. So like they kind of like showed
- 19:11the actors OK, like, hey, earmark here, go over here, do
- 19:13this. But they weren't very strict
- 19:15with it. They wanted to go with more of a
- 19:17free flow thing. So once they went in there, they
- 19:20had like a loose idea of what they wanted, but they let them
- 19:23improv and go wild for most of that.
- 19:25And the way that they explained is like they wanted to capture
- 19:29that raw feeling, make it actually feel scary.
- 19:33And they just didn't feel like they would be able to get that
- 19:35if they like actually like manufactured every movement
- 19:40which the DVD has those, you can watch all of those films
- 19:43unedited. There is actually kind of
- 19:46creepy. Yeah, like I I got.
- 19:49Uncomfortable in self watching them with Travis.
- 19:51There was 1 funny 1 though, where like apparently a guy was
- 19:53sleeping through the entire thing so they just like went to
- 19:55the mattress and just flipped them off of the mattress onto
- 19:58the floor, which I thought that that was pretty funny, but the
- 20:01rest of them were actually pretty effective and the the
- 20:04stunts they actually did the stunts like with the car
- 20:07crashing into the. The motel, the phone booth.
- 20:11Yeah, I guess you can't really fake that without it.
- 20:14Like they, they spoke very harshly about CGI.
- 20:17They're like, we're going for real shit with this one right
- 20:19here. We're actually like using stunts
- 20:21and we went for it. But the big one especially was
- 20:25the scene where they drove into the motel with a guy.
- 20:29They actually had somebody hanging inside the sunroof.
- 20:33They had the car rigged on like wires and winches.
- 20:38That way they could get it on like a motion where they could
- 20:41just like redo it over and over again and get it the way that
- 20:43they needed it to be. And there actually was a person
- 20:46on the receiving end of that getting hit with the car.
- 20:50And they had the car. It was interesting.
- 20:52They it looked like it was rigged with what looked like
- 20:55airbags or like just padding. And the stunt person was padded
- 21:00up to. And yeah, they would just like
- 21:02actually run the car into the motel, into the person, not in
- 21:06the walls or anything. Thankfully, I think that they
- 21:08added that stuff in post. But yeah, like I actually went
- 21:12for it and they pulled it off. I thought that that was a really
- 21:15well done stunt. And that's pretty much it for my
- 21:18fun facts here. I think we can go ahead and get
- 21:21on into the good, bad, ugly and absurd for this movie then.
- 21:24And Jesse, that means you kick it off.
- 21:26What did you like about this? Well, I like we talked about,
- 21:29there's some really cool shots. Like there's this one where
- 21:32David is going to the phone booth and we don't watch him
- 21:36going to the phone booth. We watch the reflection in the
- 21:38window as Amy's kind of like got an eye out.
- 21:41That is cool, I like that. It's such a cool shot, and they
- 21:44just, they do little tricks like that the whole time that makes
- 21:46it really visually interesting in what could be a very generic
- 21:50looking movie. There's a lot of interesting
- 21:54shining imagery here as well. Like we've got that opening shot
- 21:58of them on the mountain pass. Yeah.
- 22:00Nice little nods to the genre that I think is like, kind of
- 22:03like, we know this isn't like the first time you've seen this.
- 22:06We're going to put our own spin on it.
- 22:07This is heavily inspired. Yeah, and we'll pay homage to.
- 22:11Other. Things, yeah.
- 22:12I think that the first couple of acts are really great because
- 22:15it's really smart how it's done. Like you're acknowledging that
- 22:20our main characters fucked up by getting off the Interstate.
- 22:23So it's not like they're trying to justify it.
- 22:26Like it's like, yeah, I took a shortcut.
- 22:27It's not working out so well. And the killers are like ready
- 22:31for every eventuality for those first couple of acts.
- 22:35Yeah. And I think that that just like,
- 22:37cuz you're sitting there and you're like, OK, what would I do
- 22:39in this scenario? And the couple is doing those
- 22:42things. Doing everything right.
- 22:43Yeah, yeah, they're doing everything.
- 22:45And it's, it's a really effective way to do a movie like
- 22:49this instead of you being like, well, that's fucking stupid.
- 22:51Why don't they just XYZ And you have to like kind of rationalize
- 22:54with yourself, like, OK, well, everybody's not great in a
- 22:57situation like this. Yeah, I feel like like we have
- 22:59to do that too much in movies, and I'm OK with that some of the
- 23:03time. I know I've defended that some
- 23:05of the time, but also some of the time.
- 23:06It's really nice to see a smart person in a horror movie.
- 23:08Yeah, like, you can tell. Like, it's not them pulling shit
- 23:11out of their ass here. Like, they're actually, like,
- 23:13thinking things, going through the motions, like, actually
- 23:15calculated moves. Yeah.
- 23:17I was like, like you in this movie, just putting myself in
- 23:20that situation. Like, what the fuck would I do?
- 23:22Like how do you get out of this? Yeah.
- 23:25And then I also thought, like the relationship and the
- 23:27different ways of handling grief between the two of them and
- 23:32their marriage falling apart and all of that.
- 23:34I thought it was so well done. Yeah, me too.
- 23:38Because that grief thing especially too, the way they're
- 23:40processing their grief differently, it is just so
- 23:44fucking real. Yeah, like you can understand
- 23:47where they're both coming from, but they're not exactly handling
- 23:51it the healthiest way. Yes.
- 23:52It's it makes for a compelling story for sure.
- 23:56Compelling characters to follow. Yes.
- 23:59So All in all, I just thought like the setup, the the
- 24:04cinematography, everything was just really effective for me.
- 24:08Yeah. For me, I agree with a lot of
- 24:11the things that you said. One of them was like the organic
- 24:14building of the characters here, like because we're just throwing
- 24:17in with them in the opening. She wakes up from being like,
- 24:22you know, on this trip to the parents, and you can tell it's
- 24:25an overnight trip. It's like 1:00 in the morning
- 24:28and there is some tension and it's immediately obvious and you
- 24:33just kind of like it. It unfolds naturally for you.
- 24:36It never feels force or like a cheap gimmick.
- 24:38Like, oh, our son died. You know what I mean?
- 24:40Like it's like, oh, I can understand how both of these
- 24:45people are feeling and like it's both justified, but man, they
- 24:49are just not handling this. Well, at one point in my notes I
- 24:53wrote This is why we need no fault divorce.
- 24:55Yeah, like. I mean, it's just, it's a very
- 24:58unfortunate situation, but I think that it's a really
- 25:01interesting dynamic too, because you're putting these characters
- 25:04that are like done with each other and now they have to like,
- 25:08fight for their lives together. And it's just like, yeah, it's
- 25:12really, it's really compelling. Like I, I also just, I think
- 25:18that the whole premise is super scary.
- 25:21You always go to these motels and it's always sketchy.
- 25:25And like, if you go to 1, like this one right here, especially
- 25:27the ones that share the doors. We were talking about this last
- 25:29night. But that's such like a relic of
- 25:31the past, I think. I don't know.
- 25:33I've not been in a motel that's done that in a long time.
- 25:36But like the fact that you share a fucking door with strangers, I
- 25:40don't like that. And you're just, you're out of
- 25:43your element. You're in an unnatural place and
- 25:47you just never quite feel safe or comfortable there.
- 25:50And this movie really, really like plays into those fears that
- 25:54everybody has. It's super relatable.
- 25:56Well, yeah. And like, I think most people
- 25:58could probably tell you a story of a time that they've been in a
- 26:01hotel or a motel and they come back and they're like, it feels
- 26:04like somebody's been in here. Yeah, Yeah, has violated Myspace
- 26:10and that's what this whole movie is just praying on.
- 26:13And also the unfortunate bit of it all that there is like, I
- 26:19hate dark web market for that film.
- 26:22It's the other part too, the fact that like snuff films, I'm
- 26:26a fucking sucker for that as a premise in a horror movie
- 26:29because it's. Thank you for adding as a
- 26:31premise. No, I, I, I do not watch snuff
- 26:34films. I refuse to watch snuff films
- 26:36because like, I've seen a show like that whenever I was a kid
- 26:39and I really don't want to expose myself to that if I
- 26:41really don't have to see it. That's why I'm glad Reddit like,
- 26:44banned the watch people fucking die, yeah.
- 26:47Subreddit. It's just I, you know, you know,
- 26:49it's, it's such a dark and scary concepts and you know, the way
- 26:56that they do it here, like they put these people in the rooms
- 26:58and then they give you the tapes that they're making in that room
- 27:01for you to watch yourself. And that's mindfuck.
- 27:04That is a mindfuck, but a fucking power play right there
- 27:06too. It's so scary.
- 27:08And it tells you and this is another one of those things like
- 27:10this movie didn't spoon feed things like we get like little
- 27:15trips, drips and trickles of how everything has happened with the
- 27:20couple. Like it doesn't.
- 27:21Like man I can't believe that I agreed to go to your parents
- 27:23engagement party even though we're on the cusp of divorce
- 27:25after our child died. Like.
- 27:27Yeah, if you, like a bad rider would have just like stuck that
- 27:31in there and just like jammed it or would have stuck out like a
- 27:33sore thumb, but everything just kind of flowed.
- 27:35Naturally and like we get the idea of how they've been doing
- 27:39this for so long from the amount of tapes like the truck driver
- 27:41that's coming to pick up his shipment.
- 27:44He's done this regularly enough that he's a well known customer
- 27:48and he's getting a giant fucking box of multiple people.
- 27:52How how long have they been doing this?
- 27:54You know what? I.
- 27:55Mean they had a missed opportunity here that could have
- 27:58been rusty now. Oh my God.
- 28:01We could have had a crossover. Oh my God, put in, put this in
- 28:06the joyride over. I mean, honestly, yeah, I, I
- 28:09could consider it, it could be a Jason joyride adjacent right
- 28:12here. But like I you know cuz he could
- 28:15make the tapes too and give it to them.
- 28:17Oh my God, no. He dream sequel, dream sequel,
- 28:21dream sequel. Sorry it's so early.
- 28:23But like, Rusty Nails stops at this motel and then he becomes
- 28:26the killer of the snuff films, except it's like bad guy versus
- 28:30bad guy instead of like couple that you want to root.
- 28:32For Oh my God I would love that movie.
- 28:35That's a great idea for a sequel to this right here.
- 28:38We need that crossover. Yes.
- 28:40OK, well, let's talk about some bad stuff.
- 28:42OK, the last act kind of falls apart for me.
- 28:46That's where we stop having the like, man, they've done
- 28:49everything right. Like why did the fucking cop not
- 28:52call in that they're. Backup.
- 28:55Yeah, that they need backup. Like there's some shit
- 28:57happening. Even when he gets in the car, he
- 28:59doesn't call anybody. And then here's what really
- 29:02fucking pisses me off is later on in the morning when Amy calls
- 29:07911 again, they're like, oh, we already sent somebody out to
- 29:09that location and I screamed at the TVI was like, that was hours
- 29:13ago and he never came back. And nobody is bothered by that.
- 29:17Yeah, that like that kind of, it feels like they didn't know how
- 29:22to end this movie. They were like we need to get to
- 29:26the point where we do AB and C and they didn't workshop this as
- 29:32well as they could have. They needed to give you hope,
- 29:35but they needed to do in a way that, like, that felt earned, I
- 29:40guess. I don't know.
- 29:41Yeah, Like, yeah, I don't know. They it it does a little like
- 29:46fall apart just a tad bit there. Yeah, it just that that really
- 29:51kind of ruins the ending because up until then, it's like, man,
- 29:55that we don't have to do any suspension of disbelief.
- 29:57Like they've done all of the right things that they need to
- 30:00do. But yeah, that that kind of
- 30:03upsets me. And then also the types of
- 30:04cameras that are in the vents don't seem like they'd be
- 30:10wireless, like they look like Canon cameras or whatnot.
- 30:16And how are they getting live feedback in the office from
- 30:20them? That's a good point.
- 30:22Yeah. I don't they unless they have
- 30:25like, see, I think it would have made sense if like room 3 would
- 30:29have been like where everything's like plugged in,
- 30:32yes. And it would have been like the
- 30:33Control Center or whatever. That would have made perfect
- 30:35sense. Yeah, they didn't do that.
- 30:37You're right. It doesn't really make sense
- 30:38when you think about that. Yeah.
- 30:40And like, I think they should have just not shown such an up
- 30:44close of the camera to the point to be like, well, that's, that's
- 30:48not how this is going to work. Or like they're not watching
- 30:51live footage. Like they've done this so many
- 30:54times. They don't need to watch the
- 30:55live footage. They know they've got this
- 30:56person, these people trapped. I don't know, just there were
- 30:59just a couple of little things that I think could have been
- 31:02like workshopped a little bit more, edited some, but those are
- 31:06the main grapes I have with it. OK, yeah, I agree with a lot,
- 31:10like most of what you said there.
- 31:12I think just the other thing, I feel like the killers could have
- 31:15been, I don't know, a little bit more present, like more scary.
- 31:21They have like the mask reminds me of the hush mask yes, I'm not
- 31:26really a big fan of that, even with him taking that mask off
- 31:29and that movie, but like it's just.
- 31:32I knew. I knew we were going to have to
- 31:34talk about Hush. Did you really?
- 31:36Yes. I mean, honestly, it looks like
- 31:38it doesn't. Yes, Yeah.
- 31:40It's just, I don't know, like if you're going to have them there,
- 31:43make them be like, real scary. I don't know, like, I guess
- 31:46they're going for a like, grounded and real here.
- 31:48But like, people get scary masks sometimes, you know what I mean?
- 31:52Like, I don't know, I would have liked to have them fuck with
- 31:56them in more interesting ways, like, other than banging on the
- 32:00door over and over again. And that's their one and only
- 32:02trick. Yeah.
- 32:03Yeah. Like, you know, just like
- 32:06moments of them, like, you know, appearing in the room with them
- 32:09and then disappearing. You're fucking with them and you
- 32:12see a little bit like where they had done that.
- 32:13But like I would have like a moment like the strangers where
- 32:16you see like back end like in Yeah, or like in the back of
- 32:19like the room in the hallway and just like walking up behind her
- 32:22while she's just standing there in a we had.
- 32:24Oblivious area? Yeah, we had that one time and
- 32:28it didn't really have much pay off.
- 32:30Yeah, exactly. Because it's like when later he
- 32:32discovers that they can enter through the bat.
- 32:34Like we already knew that. Yeah, yeah, OK, ugly.
- 32:39This snuff of it all. This snuff of it all.
- 32:42Yeah. That's true that that is really
- 32:44ugly that people do. That, yeah.
- 32:47Yeah, mine is the relationship dynamic that we have between the
- 32:51two, the way that they are going at each other.
- 32:53It's so toxic. And it's like they're grieving
- 32:56over the same thing, but they're using that grief as ammunition
- 32:59against each other in a weird way.
- 33:01I don't know. It's it's weird.
- 33:04I hate that they're both in that situation.
- 33:08Yeah. It's just, it's really
- 33:09unfortunate. And then also just that nasty
- 33:13ass hotel. Like that was a thing, Jesse and
- 33:16I when we had to take Talia up to her surgery a few years ago.
- 33:20Yeah, when Talia had the the piece of her jaw removed with
- 33:24the tumor in it, we stayed in a hotel that was near the
- 33:29hospital. And because her surgery was
- 33:31really fucking expensive, obviously we couldn't spend
- 33:35Jeeped out a ton on the hotel. So between what we could afford
- 33:39and what was going to be in a decent distance of it, I didn't
- 33:45sleep under the covers. Yeah, it was.
- 33:48It was. We didn't shower there because
- 33:50we would have come out feeling dirtier than going in.
- 33:53I. Mean like immediately in this
- 33:55movie first shot you see is a giant Roach hanging off.
- 33:58I think I remember we saw like a bug in like the bathroom or
- 34:00something like that. It was.
- 34:01Nasty. It was so bad.
- 34:03It was. And I was like looking around, I
- 34:05was like, this looks like the type of place they'd kill.
- 34:06Like is there any events where there might be a camera?
- 34:09Yeah, yeah, I, I it's just one of those ones where you feel
- 34:12anything. It's so bad.
- 34:12It was so bad. Yeah, but it makes movies like
- 34:14when you watch movies like this, more immersive because you can
- 34:17put yourself right there and be like, OK, I know exactly how
- 34:20they're feeling. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:23All right, absurd stuff. The fucking sparkler at the gas
- 34:26station. Yes.
- 34:27OK, first of all, if I go anywhere and you non
- 34:31consensually give me a firework, I'm gonna be pissed off.
- 34:35And I like here, it's like, I gotta give this to you.
- 34:37This is what we gotta do. I have to hand you the sparkler.
- 34:40And she's gonna be in an closed area.
- 34:43It's in the fucking car. That's not safe.
- 34:46And you know what? Even if they weren't in the car,
- 34:48they're right next to a gas pump.
- 34:51Yeah, that's the that's the part that gets me the most.
- 34:53The fact that you have sparklers going off next to gas pumps.
- 34:57Are you fucking dumb? Are you fucking stupid?
- 35:00That is going to cause an explosion.
- 35:02How has it not already? Maybe it's part of the snuff
- 35:06plan. Maybe they have exploded people
- 35:08that way. Oh, and they just keep
- 35:10rebuilding. Yeah.
- 35:11Did we ever get an angle from the gas station on the on the
- 35:15monitoring cameras? Man, it's just you need to go.
- 35:17Back and review. Yeah, it's just bad news all
- 35:20around. I just cannot understand the
- 35:23reasoning. For the owner makes me say that.
- 35:26Does he make you give people a sparkler?
- 35:29On one point, like since it's also a garage and you're handing
- 35:32them in the car, like you're kind of guaranteeing yourself
- 35:36repeat business because like, you fucked up my car and now,
- 35:38like, you got to fix it. Yeah.
- 35:39Then again, it's on you. But then again, these are not
- 35:43good people that will make you pay for it.
- 35:44So somebody came at me with them and be like, no, thank you.
- 35:47Yeah. Nothing.
- 35:49Do you have anything else? That was it.
- 35:51OK. Yeah, I had that one too.
- 35:53That's my first one. The second one is, I like that.
- 35:57Like they they've accepted their fate and they're just like gonna
- 36:00wait it out. And I think she falls asleep for
- 36:03a second and she wakes up and she just sees David watching the
- 36:05snuff films. And I just like the idea that
- 36:07he's just like, like, this is kind of interesting.
- 36:09Here. This is.
- 36:10Me falling asleep on the couch and waking up to you putting it
- 36:13on something like New York Ripper, Yeah.
- 36:16Yeah, man. Or like one of those weird ass
- 36:20VHS like shot on film videos that I have in there.
- 36:23Necrophiles everybody. My God that's a weird fucking
- 36:26movie. My God.
- 36:28Yeah. OK.
- 36:30So let's rate it. What do you rate this I?
- 36:34Might have a 7 1/2. OK, cool.
- 36:36I'm giving an 8. Yeah, I I'm glad it held up
- 36:39because it had been a long time since I watched it, I think
- 36:41since like a rounded game out. So I'm happy, I'm happy.
- 36:45It's good. Have we never watched it
- 36:46together? We've never watched it together.
- 36:48OK, yeah, No, then. I probably haven't seen it since
- 36:50high school either. Yeah.
- 36:51Because I remember I was asking you like, have you even watched
- 36:54this? OK.
- 36:55Whenever we were putting this on.
- 36:57Yeah. There we go.
- 36:58It's a starting average of 7.7. Five.
- 37:00Hey, not too bad. Cool.
- 37:03All right, Well then, let's get into it.
- 37:05So we start off with just just some dropping down the road
- 37:09credits that make like a little Vertigo and then shining esque
- 37:14pattern and then we're driving down a mountain Rd. like we just
- 37:18got a job at the overlook. Yeah, middle of the night.
- 37:22It's one of those back roads that's all windy.
- 37:25You know what it looks like and. I relate to this moment of us
- 37:29driving back from Owensboro and you thinking that you might have
- 37:32hit a possum and I had been asleep.
- 37:35Yeah, and, you know, like, 'cause that's what happens here.
- 37:38He sees a raccoon in the road, swerves around it.
- 37:40I did not swerve around this thing.
- 37:42I yeah, I completely clipped the Opossum and I, you know, I
- 37:47didn't want to do it. It just, like, came out of
- 37:49nowhere. They stopped.
- 37:51They swear if he makes it off the road, but they don't wreck
- 37:53and they start driving again. But the engine is starting to
- 37:55make a noise now. Yeah, fucked something up.
- 37:58She's like, why are we not on the Interstate?
- 37:59And he said, well, there was a traffic jam.
- 38:01So I used a shortcut and I took some of those trucker pills.
- 38:04That way we could just like, push through the knife.
- 38:06And she goes, I had a dream that you tried to kill me.
- 38:09Yeah, she's like, but hey, at least you're in it or no.
- 38:11And that's why he says like, hey, at least you're dreaming
- 38:13about me. That's progress, right?
- 38:15And then this woman is a full blown psycho because she is
- 38:19cutting an apple with a knife while they're just driving along
- 38:23in the car. And here's the thing, I agree
- 38:24with her. I don't like to just chomp into
- 38:27an apple either. Yeah, I like to cut it up too.
- 38:30I prefer the slices. But you know what I do?
- 38:32I have my little apple slicer in queer and I cut it up and I put
- 38:36in a little zip lock bag for myself.
- 38:38Yeah, she didn't think that part had.
- 38:40Yeah, she, she has like this little knife and she's, you
- 38:43know, cutting the apple and she cuts her finger.
- 38:45And she bleeds all over it. Now she's got a vampire apple.
- 38:48That's true, yeah. Also, it's like 1:25 AM, so it's
- 38:52really late here and they. David's like we're in a bad
- 38:56mood. Let's talk about Charlie.
- 38:58And she's like, I'm so tired, David.
- 39:01Yeah, they're trying to, like, play the radio.
- 39:04There's nothing on. And he's like, yeah, I remember
- 39:05Charlie, he would Just Dance around and no music at all.
- 39:08And she's like David, I'm tired. So they find a gas station that
- 39:14has a light on that doesn't seem like it should be open.
- 39:16And the guy's like, I was just about to leave, you're in luck.
- 39:20So he looks at the engine and. They're like, OK, I'm trying to
- 39:23go to Downey right now. Yeah, I know where I'm at cuz
- 39:28she's trying to say that they're lost.
- 39:30Like I know where we're at. I'm following the map, we're
- 39:32adding the downy. Here's the thing.
- 39:33And the GPS. Existed at this point.
- 39:35Like it wasn't like you had to have an actual like GPS machine,
- 39:39yeah, for your car, but it existed.
- 39:42And they seem like the type of people that would have it
- 39:44because they don't seem crazy comfortable with maps.
- 39:48That's true. Well, I mean, he's pretty
- 39:49comfortable here and I think that he's actually on to it.
- 39:52He's like, I know where we're going.
- 39:53I've got the map right here. We're heading to down East right
- 39:54over here. But the guy's like signaling
- 39:56like, no, it's the other way around.
- 39:58You've went too far. Which they should have passed
- 40:01signs or something. That's why I don't feel like
- 40:04he's as good at navigating as he thinks he is.
- 40:06So let me just speak from my perspective of being somebody
- 40:10from like a backwoods area. You don't always get signs like
- 40:13that in areas like this. You can go long distances before
- 40:16you get a sign of like town this way.
- 40:18That's more of a highway thing that doesn't really happen on
- 40:20back. Roads.
- 40:21That's fair. That's a good point.
- 40:23So they checked the engine and he's like, yeah, you got your
- 40:27belt, It's the blades bent. So they fuck around with it a
- 40:32little bit, gets the engine starts like, all right, you're
- 40:34good enough. You can make it the 30 miles
- 40:36it'll take to get back to Downey.
- 40:37They he's offering to do this for free, but David insisted he
- 40:40takes some money and he goes well you just buy yourself a $20
- 40:43sparkler sends them off to their death.
- 40:46But this doesn't work out the way he wants because David is
- 40:50being an asshole to Amy. And he's like, I guess I can get
- 40:53you to smile if I gave you some fireworks every once in a while.
- 40:56She just, like, drops it on the side of the road, somehow
- 40:58doesn't cause a forest fire. Yeah.
- 41:01If this is in New Mexico, that's a dry area, right?
- 41:03It's pretty dry, Yeah, that would be a fire hazard for sure
- 41:06right there. But then again, this gas station
- 41:08doesn't give a fuck about safety.
- 41:10Do you think these are that couple that when they had
- 41:13Charlie, they did the gender reveal and they did like the
- 41:16fireworks and. Dude, yeah, they did.
- 41:19The fireworks they like would have caused a national disaster.
- 41:23Yeah. So they're driving just a little
- 41:26bit down the road and then. They make it about a mile or
- 41:28two. Yeah, car has a full blown
- 41:30breakdown now, so they have to pull over to the side of the
- 41:32road. And they're just, they're.
- 41:34It is so uncomfortable listening to them snipe at each other.
- 41:39They hate each other. Honestly she's pretty bad here.
- 41:43She like every opportunity she gets, she takes a shot at him
- 41:46for fucking up in some way. Or like, I kind of understand
- 41:50you take a detour because like, there was a wreck on the
- 41:52Interstate. That's that makes sense.
- 41:54Like, yeah, it could have been a fuck up, but you know, you don't
- 41:57have to like, beat him every single time there's like a
- 41:59moment, you know what I mean? I mean he is just he is sniping
- 42:04back just as much. I would too.
- 42:05But I'm I'm that's what I'm saying.
- 42:07It's a toxic dynamic. She drew first blood.
- 42:11OK, that doesn't take away from all of the killing, you know
- 42:14what I mean? Like.
- 42:15The killing, well, you're. You're invoking Rambo.
- 42:19Yeah, but they're not doing anything.
- 42:20They're, I guess they're doing character assassination of each
- 42:23other, if you want to put it that way.
- 42:25Yeah, they're, they're they're being toxic to each other,
- 42:27though. They're being really, really
- 42:28mean. So he's like, yeah, all right,
- 42:31well, you could sit in the car if you want to.
- 42:33I'm going to go walk all the way back to the gas station because
- 42:35that's better than nothing. So she reluctantly tags us along
- 42:39and they walked back. They make it there, gas stations
- 42:42close. The guy left like he said he was
- 42:44going to, but conveniently there is a motel right across the road
- 42:47which appears to be open. So they go over there, nobody's
- 42:51in there. They hear in the backroom though
- 42:55women screaming and it sounds like a really fucked up horror
- 42:59movie. Yeah, that's honestly what, Like
- 43:01it doesn't sound like somebody's actually back there screaming.
- 43:03It sounds like it's coming from ATV, which it is, Yeah.
- 43:06And this is where the clerk or the manager, whatever you want
- 43:10to call him, this is where he comes out and he's like, oh,
- 43:13yeah, no, the mechanic, he just left and they asked if he has a
- 43:18way to get a hold of me because I'm not going to do that.
- 43:20Which is the right call? Like the guy couldn't do
- 43:22anything for you before. Why do you think he's going to
- 43:26come back and do anything for you now?
- 43:28He fucked your car up even more, actually.
- 43:29Yeah, like, why are you trying to call this man back out here
- 43:33at 2:00 in the morning? And then he's like, well, you
- 43:36can use the pay phone out there to call the other kids.
- 43:40What is it, Clarks? Clarks.
- 43:42Yeah. It's about.
- 43:43It's in a town about 20 miles over.
- 43:45The pay phone takes Dimes, and they go through this whole song
- 43:47and dance with getting changed and everything.
- 43:49And as they're walking out the door, this fucking asshole is
- 43:51like, of course they're close, too.
- 43:53Yeah. This.
- 43:56This little shit, they should've known something was up.
- 43:58So again, this moment. Let's bring something else up
- 44:00here, another possible solution. AAA exists.
- 44:05But are they AAA members? You can sign up when you call.
- 44:09I mean, honestly, that's like how they get probably 90% of
- 44:11their business. Like I yeah, I'm fucked.
- 44:13Come, come help me. I would do it.
- 44:15I would do it in this moment here.
- 44:16I always cancel it afterwards. You know what I mean?
- 44:18Yeah. But now they they're like, fuck
- 44:20it. Let's just, the guy's like,
- 44:22well, you could stay at the motel overnight and he'll be
- 44:25back in the morning. You can get your car fixed up
- 44:26first thing in the morning. He's like, I'll give you the
- 44:28honeymoon seat. Motel like this doesn't have a
- 44:30honeymoon seat. Honestly, there's nothing
- 44:33special about it either. Yeah.
- 44:35And like, they're like, Nah, that's fine.
- 44:37You know, like, I'm going to give it to you anyways.
- 44:38Like he really wants them to stay in the honeymoon suite so
- 44:41they go in. There Yeah, he he didn't do a
- 44:43good job of reading their vibes No, he.
- 44:45Did not. Because we were talking about
- 44:47this based off of the other snuff films.
- 44:49Like what's he telling them? Like there's one where there's
- 44:51two guys who are clearly like Bros, you know?
- 44:56And I was like, I don't feel like they called them.
- 44:59They told them that they were getting the honeymoon suite.
- 45:02Probably not, unless it was like a, you know, a gay relationship.
- 45:05I don't think it was a gay. Relationship I.
- 45:07Mean like they're Bros and like they they look like friends.
- 45:10Yeah, they were broing down. They study with each other.
- 45:12Yeah, they're broing down. And I'm not saying that gay
- 45:15couple can't do that. I'm just saying I wasn't getting
- 45:17those 5. Yeah.
- 45:18No, you can. You can read the room.
- 45:20That was not what was happening there.
- 45:21Yeah. So I like I just wonder what he
- 45:25uses for all of these other and like there's one where it's like
- 45:283 girls are staying there. Maybe it's like smoking and
- 45:31non-smoking, I don't know. That would be.
- 45:33Yeah, no, this hotel, there's no way.
- 45:35There's no way that you look at this motel and every room is not
- 45:38a smoking. Room, you're right.
- 45:39They like look at it like smoking or non-smoking.
- 45:41You just kind of look around. It's like, yeah, yeah,
- 45:43everybody, nobody follows that fucking rule anyways, so they go
- 45:46in the room. Oh, and this place is cash only.
- 45:49They're not set up for credit cards, but they still need the
- 45:51ID for damage. He's so.
- 45:54Sketchy that is sketchy that adds a whole other way or two is
- 45:57like when you buy the tape you get the ID for the person to
- 46:00like. Yeah.
- 46:01That's like a nice little attack that's like the fucking like
- 46:05special features or like the postcards that they send with
- 46:07some of these Blu-ray. Releases.
- 46:09Yeah, you can. Get his ID if you were in this
- 46:11movie. OK, in the room, nothing special
- 46:15about it. It's just a nasty ass room with
- 46:17roaches and chip Water's brown. Oh.
- 46:20My God, it's so. Gross.
- 46:21It is disgusting. It's this is another where
- 46:24you're like, well, not brushing my teeth tonight, not showering.
- 46:28I'm probably not going to sleep super well.
- 46:31They do make a little bit of peace with each other.
- 46:33Yeah, they we're it's revealed that they have already divorced.
- 46:40They haven't signed the papers yet, but they're in the process
- 46:42of everything. Yeah, they're putting on a show.
- 46:44They were heading over to her parents house for their
- 46:47anniversary celebration and they really don't want to bring the
- 46:49mood down by announcing the end of their relationship.
- 46:52So they're putting it like putting on a front.
- 46:54Yeah, well, it's like the end of their relationship, but also
- 46:57because like, they lost their son, so.
- 47:00Yeah, did they even tell them about that too?
- 47:02Like what if they show up and Charlie's not there Like.
- 47:06Where's Charlie? Where's our favorite grandson?
- 47:09Yeah, we're focusing on the good stuff today.
- 47:13Stairs. We didn't really want to bring
- 47:14this up. Yeah, could have been bad.
- 47:18My God, this is dark. It got dark.
- 47:20Yeah, this. Is really dark it.
- 47:22Is. So they get a call on their
- 47:26phone and they're like, what? They make a joke.
- 47:28They're like room service, but there's no answer at the phone.
- 47:31And then there's like loud banging on the doors and there's
- 47:33nobody out there. And then there's extra banging
- 47:36on the adjoining room door. And David is a psycho now and
- 47:41he's trying to open that door. Dude, why?
- 47:44Why would you want to welcome that Vadnais on to yourself?
- 47:47That was a dumb move right there.
- 47:49Yeah. And he's fed up with it.
- 47:51Eventually he's like, you know what, fuck it, I'm going to go
- 47:53out there and, like, investigate.
- 47:55So he like leaves the room. Yeah.
- 47:56And well, Amy tries to call the front desk 1st and the phone's
- 47:59not on. Yeah.
- 48:00So he's like, fuck it, I'll go talk to the manager myself.
- 48:03And then he gets there and the clerk's like, well, that's
- 48:05interesting because you all are the only guests here.
- 48:08But, you know, and, like, he likes to say ominous things and
- 48:12he'll be like, but yeah, yeah. It's like, but sometimes we get
- 48:17Drifters or college kids who will, like, run in and just look
- 48:20for a place to stay for the night.
- 48:22Where are these college kids coming from?
- 48:23This is not a college town. Like the drifter thing I could
- 48:27see because that's been a plot in many a Jack Reacher novel.
- 48:31I mean, it just makes sense too, yeah.
- 48:32Especially if it's like an abandoned motel and this is like
- 48:35a skeety ass place. You're going to get people like
- 48:37that. Yeah, makes sense.
- 48:40So he's like, I'll investigate into his, like, might want to
- 48:42take one of those guns unless they're just for show.
- 48:45So he goes like the room and he's like, yeah, it's all quiet.
- 48:48When you went out there, they probably saw you and figured
- 48:50that you're going to the front desk.
- 48:53And she's like, maybe we should just go out to the car.
- 48:56And Dave was like, let's just get some sleep.
- 48:58We'll just wait this out, it'll be fine.
- 49:00And if I get some sleep? He means turn on the static.
- 49:03Yes. TV at full volume.
- 49:05Yeah, there's nothing on the TV. He's whipping through the
- 49:07channel so he sees some VHS tapes and he pops one in.
- 49:12And it looks like a really cheap horror film.
- 49:15That's what he seems to assume it is at 1st.
- 49:17And he's like, they could have at least left us some porn.
- 49:20Yeah, it's a honeymoon suite. I feel like that was it would be
- 49:24as weird. In the honeymoon suite, it makes
- 49:26a little bit more sense. I.
- 49:31May not be your thing, Other people sing, that's the thing.
- 49:35It's like when they try to have a full service coffee bar but
- 49:40you can never fully guess people's full flavors of coffee,
- 49:44like their preferences and everything.
- 49:47I feel like porn has to be very personalized and just like
- 49:50leaving a smattering there is weird and presumptuous in a way
- 49:56I don't want to. I don't want to be a manager of
- 49:58a hotel that does that. Can you imagine though?
- 50:00Like what's the process of curating that like?
- 50:03Like and then I feel like I get so in my head of like, what if
- 50:08they think this is what I need to and I'm just trying to cater
- 50:11to the chip front? Tape, I have to see these
- 50:13people, they have to check out that next day and they have to
- 50:15look at me and knowing I curated that shit.
- 50:17Yes. And then like as a customer I'd
- 50:21also be like I need to rewind it to exactly where it was.
- 50:24Yeah, you do not know that I watched this tape.
- 50:27That's what I watched. Yeah, Yeah.
- 50:30It's just a bad idea idea all around.
- 50:32That's true. Yeah.
- 50:33It's it's awkward. Yeah.
- 50:34And yeah, it's very much like the whole if I get this
- 50:38pay-per-view, is the name going to show up on the bill?
- 50:41That's one of my favorite things.
- 50:43There's this one picture of like this old couple and it's like
- 50:46old couple of rented charge for all of these porn films that
- 50:51they claim they never rented and they like it just keeps zooming
- 50:54in on the old man's face and you can just see it's just like this
- 50:57dude rented all of these porn videos and lied to his wife
- 51:00about it and she brought it up to the news and now it's just
- 51:03like, we know what you did, man, Like you've rented a bunch of
- 51:06porn and now you're trying to that's.
- 51:08The reverse of that one episode of King of the Hill.
- 51:10Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 51:13So he pops in the tape, he's watching it, and as he's
- 51:17watching it, he's like, you know what?
- 51:18This is a shitty movie. He pops in another one.
- 51:21It's another Stuff film. And then this is when he
- 51:23realizes, and I'm glad that they don't spend more time than
- 51:27necessary. Like they put in two tapes to
- 51:30realize they're both in this room and they're like, well,
- 51:34we're probably going to beat murdered.
- 51:35I appreciate we cut through the bullshit almost immediately.
- 51:38But also, I really like that. That's a good way to like to do
- 51:42that. You know, you put in the tapes,
- 51:44you're like, oh shit, that's this room right there.
- 51:45That's scary. Because like, OK, you do 1.
- 51:48And like, my head immediately would be like, oh, these guys
- 51:52are amateur film makers. They just wanted to see what
- 51:55they put together. Yeah, they like horror movies.
- 51:58That's what I would think if I had one.
- 51:59Yeah. But if I had two, I'd be like,
- 52:02oh, these are real. At the same time, they could be
- 52:04like, all right, the people that like run this hotel, they can't
- 52:08afford the movies of their own, so they make their own movies.
- 52:10And they're big horror nerds, so they just make exclusively
- 52:13horror movies in this one. Room no, because if they can
- 52:15afford the tapes that they need to like, film all of this and
- 52:19cut it together, they could just as easily have a tape recording
- 52:22like ATV broadcast of a movie. OK, that's true.
- 52:25That's true. Anyways, it's bad news.
- 52:28Yes, either way, yeah. And so they're like, well, OK,
- 52:32we're we're gonna, we need to figure out what we're gonna do.
- 52:35And just then the power starts going on and off.
- 52:39We see somebody hiding in the bathroom.
- 52:41They don't see it. So it ultimately has no payoff.
- 52:43Yeah, mass to it appears, Yeah. And they realize that they put
- 52:47the movies there on purpose to get them freaked out.
- 52:51They're going to anticipate that.
- 52:52They're going to try and run. Let's see if we can sneak out
- 52:55this bathroom window. No, it's all nailed up.
- 52:58Also, here's your vampire apple on the counter.
- 53:00You left that in the car because you're not going to eat your own
- 53:03blood. Although that has to be the most
- 53:06iron rich apple in the world. Yeah, it.
- 53:08Does I mean it kind of fits too because like vampire imagery
- 53:12usually has an apple like Twilight.
- 53:14Like, yes, twilight, yes, twilight.
- 53:17So. They're going.
- 53:18To run to the trees, yeah. They leave the.
- 53:20They're going to do Jennifer's body through the trees, Yeah.
- 53:25They run towards the road, but a mask man comes from the
- 53:29darkness. He just emerges.
- 53:30He does it all like Michael Myersy, like no writing.
- 53:34He's just like. Yeah, Yep, just waits them right
- 53:37back into the room. And then they, well, cuz then
- 53:39they try to run towards where the front desk is.
- 53:41Another killer there. Oh, we're gonna turn this third
- 53:43direction. Somebody else there.
- 53:44OK, I guess we're gonna we're gonna go into the back into the
- 53:48motel room. In the process, drop their cell
- 53:50phone and one of the killer steps on and smashes it.
- 53:53Yeah, which was kind of a moot point anyway because the cell
- 53:56wasn't really getting good signal.
- 53:57Yeah. So they decide to reinvestigate,
- 54:03revisit that bathroom door idea or that bathroom window idea,
- 54:07and somebody's outside there too, so that's not good.
- 54:10David's plan is that he's going to run for the payphone and Amy
- 54:14is going to distract them by acting like she's going to try
- 54:16and get out that bathroom window, which seems risky for
- 54:20both of them. Yeah, but then again, he's got a
- 54:22good point. You got to do something.
- 54:23If you stay here, you're going to die.
- 54:25Yes. So yeah, you got to get moving
- 54:27and. This is where we get that really
- 54:29cool shot of like the reflection of him running to the phone
- 54:32booth. It's I really enjoy this shot.
- 54:35Yeah, it's really cool. He makes it there and he makes
- 54:39the call. How do you wire a phone to do
- 54:42this? That's a great question, yeah.
- 54:45I I fully believe this can be done.
- 54:47Yeah, I'm sure he can. I just.
- 54:48Want to know how it's just like a prop phone or?
- 54:50Something, yeah. But like he he gets on the
- 54:52phone, he makes the call to a 9/1. 11 and it seems legit at
- 54:55first, if you ignore the fact that the voice sounds eerily
- 54:58like like the manager. Yeah, I demoted him.
- 55:04And you know, he's like, I need the address.
- 55:07And he's like, I don't know the address.
- 55:08It's the Mountain Pike Inn or something like that.
- 55:11I forget what it was called. I never wrote it down.
- 55:13And to get the operators like we don't have the address.
- 55:17You should be paying more attention, Mr. Fox.
- 55:19What are you doing? Running out there alone in the
- 55:22dark seems like a bad idea. Whoa.
- 55:24The computer agrees. Bad idea.
- 55:27Get out of there. Dude, threat protection.
- 55:28That's what that says. Yeah, which the virus in
- 55:32question here is a car coming right at the phone booth.
- 55:35He gets out just in time and smashes the phone booth and the
- 55:38car drives him right back. Not like picks him up and drives
- 55:41him there. Which of that would be
- 55:43hilarious? Like get in man.
- 55:44Like the early word protocol prototype.
- 55:49No, he it chases him back to his room.
- 55:52Yeah, so they they're they, they make, they're panicking, they.
- 55:56Kiss and like I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 55:57Yeah, yeah, yeah. I really want to see what
- 56:00happens after this movie if they realize it was just the
- 56:03adrenaline was making them a little horny.
- 56:06This could be some kind of really fucked up therapy right
- 56:09here. Like we're gonna get couples
- 56:10back together. Yes they need to start getting
- 56:13into like life or death situation like they just keep
- 56:15that's my other dream sequel 2 dream sequels. 1 is the Rusty
- 56:18Nail crossover, the other is this couple and the spin off
- 56:22sequel, right. They keep getting into life or
- 56:26death situations instead of going to couples counseling.
- 56:29Yeah. Yeah, just like this is our life
- 56:31now we gotta. Do yeah.
- 56:32Like this work? Oh my God.
- 56:33One of the like later sequels has like Statham or something in
- 56:37it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:39OK, so either way, they're they realize that they need to get
- 56:43some sort of a weapon. There's nothing in there.
- 56:45But these people are resourceful.
- 56:47This is why you want to root for this couple because what does
- 56:49Luke Wilson do? He punches a mirror not out of
- 56:52frustration, but so he can make a mirror.
- 56:54Out of necessity, yes. And he's recognizing it's
- 56:59getting close to daylight. Yeah.
- 57:00These people are going to want this to be done soon.
- 57:02So they decide they're just going to barricade themselves in
- 57:05there and wait for them to come in there to defend themselves.
- 57:08So they're in a little corner, and this is where suddenly, Amy
- 57:13wakes up by herself. And he's just watching the
- 57:15tapes. He's like.
- 57:17Crouched in front of the TV. You know, like when you're 8
- 57:19years old and you sneak out, you're supposed to be in bed but
- 57:22you're watching TV. In the living room, it's the
- 57:24cover of Poltergeist. Like the girl.
- 57:25It's like with the TV, they're like, Oh yeah, he's she's like,
- 57:31why are you watching the tapes for?
- 57:32He's like, he's like. And I'm.
- 57:35Not I'm not even joking or dumbing down his dialogue.
- 57:39He's like, I'm studying to see what went wrong with all of
- 57:42these other people. They were all idiots.
- 57:45He calls them idiots. Fucking dummies over here.
- 57:49Yeah, he's like. He's like, they just panic and
- 57:53they freak out. And what you have to realize is
- 57:55that when the killers get bored, somebody just pops out from the
- 57:59bathroom. Yeah, he's like this guy, every
- 58:01single movie. He just kind of emerges from
- 58:03here somewhere. And see, I think he's being a
- 58:05little bit unfair to all of these other people because it
- 58:08seems like it moved a lot faster for the rest of them.
- 58:11It did. And that's another thing.
- 58:13Like is it taking longer for these people because they're
- 58:16better at this than them, or like what?
- 58:19I don't. I don't.
- 58:20I don't know. That's why I wish we had seen a
- 58:21little bit more progression in the tapes, like in the styles of
- 58:24how they're doing it, so that way we can.
- 58:26So just like the kill moments? Yeah, like they're honing in on
- 58:29their their skills. That would have been
- 58:31interesting. The one that we did get to see
- 58:33the most of that was like the two Bros broing down.
- 58:36Yeah, that was like they were just chilling in the room and
- 58:38then eventually shit started happening.
- 58:40Yes. And either way, they're they
- 58:43realized that the bathroom is going to be an issue.
- 58:45So he goes in there and he moves the shower curtain up something
- 58:48to cover the vent. That's smart.
- 58:50In the in the shower, Yeah. Blocking all the cameras, that
- 58:53way they can't be watched. And then as he's jumping down
- 58:57from the bathtub, he hears a hollow sound.
- 59:00Oh, there's a trap door under the rug in the bathroom.
- 59:03Now, here is the move where I'm going to say, what else do you
- 59:07do? Because it's risky to go into
- 59:09this tunnel because you could run into the killers, but you
- 59:11also know they're waiting to get you.
- 59:13Outside. Yeah outside.
- 59:14So this is one of those like Hail Marys.
- 59:17I equate it to like the final round in trivia at the bar cuz
- 59:22the. Withdraw your points.
- 59:23Yeah, you wager all of your points if you are not already in
- 59:26the lead. Yeah, you got to wager all of
- 59:28your points because if you lose them, well, you weren't winning
- 59:31anyway. But if you gain them, you have a
- 59:33chance to win. So that's what this is.
- 59:35We're not calculating this shit, we're wagering.
- 59:37Everything. Yes, All in, all in.
- 59:40Yeah, So they go into the tunnel.
- 59:44It's a tunnel. It's like a dirt tunnel, and
- 59:47it's really claustrophobic. It's God.
- 59:50I don't know if I'd be able to do this.
- 59:52Hold on though, hold on. There's something we need to
- 59:55talk about before it. OK?
- 59:57Cuz they they look at it thinking about it, but first the
- 1:00:01semi pulls up outside. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:03Cuz we need to talk about this guy for a second.
- 1:00:04True, true. And they're like, well, maybe
- 1:00:09he's, he's somebody that can help.
- 1:00:11And they're like, well, maybe he's not a friendly.
- 1:00:13And so they're. Yeah.
- 1:00:14So they're debating it back and forth.
- 1:00:16And then they see one of the killers coming for him.
- 1:00:18And they're like, oh, OK, no, we need to warn him so that way he
- 1:00:20doesn't get murdered and also so he can save us.
- 1:00:22And they're like shouting and banging on the window and the
- 1:00:24killer's coming up behind him. And then the clerks there was
- 1:00:26like, oh, here's your delivery. Yeah.
- 1:00:28The guy, like it'd be funny. He's just like, hey, I look
- 1:00:30forward to seeing y'all. Yeah, can't wait for yours.
- 1:00:33Am I gonna be in this one? I can't.
- 1:00:35See. You, yeah.
- 1:00:37Do I get a discount on that tape?
- 1:00:38Yeah. So this is when they decide, OK,
- 1:00:42our only chance is to go down this trapdoor and they're going
- 1:00:44through long passage. They are crawling on their hands
- 1:00:47and knees. So it's uncomfortable, it's
- 1:00:49painful, it's claustrophobic. Amy is panicking.
- 1:00:53Fully relate. And then they have to crawl
- 1:00:54through. Rats.
- 1:00:55Yeah, what I could best describe as a puddle of rats.
- 1:01:00I I would listen to that puddle of mud cover bands.
- 1:01:05Yeah, yeah. Oh, man, it's nasty.
- 1:01:07But they make it through and they find a ladder.
- 1:01:10They climb all the way up and there's a door.
- 1:01:13They open it up and they just see a bunch of monitors.
- 1:01:16Yeah. And it's playing all kinds of.
- 1:01:17Other films, I get what they call it in reality TV.
- 1:01:20It's like Video Island or something like.
- 1:01:22That yeah, something. Like that, that's kind of the
- 1:01:24situation that they have set up in there there's a phone, so Amy
- 1:01:28calls 911. However, the the trio of killers
- 1:01:33bursts in and they. They interrupt.
- 1:01:36Yeah, they interrupt, so Amy and David have hopped back in the
- 1:01:40tunnel, but Amy left the phone up.
- 1:01:43OK I was thinking like smart but also dumb because they know you
- 1:01:47were there but also smart. That gives the operator enough
- 1:01:51time to track your location. Yeah, it's a but this is how
- 1:01:55they figure out that they know about the tunnels.
- 1:01:57So. So the cleric sends the killers
- 1:02:00into the tunnels to get them. This is scary right here.
- 1:02:02He's like, you go down this one, you go down the other one.
- 1:02:04The idea that you could be like sandwiched by these two is
- 1:02:08scary, but there's like a diverging path.
- 1:02:10There's like a fork in the tunnel.
- 1:02:12And I don't know why they didn't consider that as a possibility
- 1:02:15because there's not a lot of places for this fork in the
- 1:02:18tunnel to really. And there's three of.
- 1:02:20Them. They couldn't cut them off on
- 1:02:21all ends. There, Yeah, but they didn't.
- 1:02:23And this is how Amy and David end up in the gas station.
- 1:02:26And they do the smart thing that I was yelling at them to do when
- 1:02:29they were in Video Island, which was cover the trapdoor and block
- 1:02:33the front door of the gas station.
- 1:02:35Yeah, but apparently this, it's like a whole fucking desk or
- 1:02:38something. And this is like the lightest
- 1:02:40desk ever, apparently. Or the killer really isn't
- 1:02:44Michael Myers type. He's gotta be in his Himbo era.
- 1:02:46He's gotta be because like, he's able to open the door and lift
- 1:02:50up this fucking thing like it's nothing.
- 1:02:52I feel like if I was in a tunnel, an underground tunnel, I
- 1:02:55would probably struggle to even get the trap door open.
- 1:02:57I actually like that. It's either that or you're using
- 1:03:00all that adrenaline. It's like the mother lifting the
- 1:03:02car to save her baby strength. I guess.
- 1:03:06But anyway, they're sitting there in the gas station,
- 1:03:08they're crying. She is having this moment where
- 1:03:11she feels like she's going to die.
- 1:03:13So she's atoning for all her sins.
- 1:03:14She's like, it's my fault Charlie's dead.
- 1:03:17And David's like, no, you've got to stop blaming yourself here.
- 1:03:21And I'll stop blaming you too, because if we make it out of
- 1:03:23this, we'll act like nothing happened.
- 1:03:27But as they're having this little conversation, the cop
- 1:03:30arrives and it's a real 1. Yes, this is an actual sheriff.
- 1:03:35He asked the clerk if they've had any visitors tonight.
- 1:03:39And then the clerk goes, no, this is our slow season.
- 1:03:41And he goes, well, what happened over there with the destroyed
- 1:03:44phone booth and upturned picnic tables and he's like college
- 1:03:49kids. So that means Travis was out
- 1:03:52there flipping the tables drunk with his fraternity brothers.
- 1:03:55You can say it's bullshit, but I am living.
- 1:03:58Proof it is that. Thing is, what drunk college
- 1:03:59kids? Do fact it is.
- 1:04:03And the clerks like, yeah, that happened a while ago.
- 1:04:06I just haven't had time to fix it.
- 1:04:07And the sheriff goes because you're so busy with all your
- 1:04:09guests. This guys on it.
- 1:04:12I loved the sheriff for the first half of his appearance.
- 1:04:15Yeah, yeah. He was like, I think he was
- 1:04:17right in the side. I think he had it under control
- 1:04:19a little bit too much. Yeah, he was like, oh, this
- 1:04:21guy's a dummy. Yeah, they he's like, well, I
- 1:04:24guess I need to investigate the rooms.
- 1:04:26And he starts to open the different rooms.
- 1:04:28Room 3. Yeah, and room there and the
- 1:04:31clerk goes, oh, I got the wrong set of keys.
- 1:04:34Let me go check. Let me go swap out my keys.
- 1:04:37And when he does that, the door opens for the sheriff on his
- 1:04:40own. So he should be suspicious.
- 1:04:42Yeah. And the lights aren't working.
- 1:04:45He goes into the bathroom, and this is where he finds the trap
- 1:04:48door, goes back out into the main part of the room.
- 1:04:51And there's this stuff film playing.
- 1:04:52And he's like, OK, well I gotta do cop shit.
- 1:04:56It's got like, it's gun drawn now.
- 1:04:57He walks out and they notice like, oh shit.
- 1:04:59Like the guy is freaked out. He's seen something we need to
- 1:05:02go out there and get. Him, yeah.
- 1:05:03And at the same time, somebody's trying to come in through the
- 1:05:05gas station, so it's like it's a good time for us to exit anyway.
- 1:05:08So they run out to the sheriff and he's about to shoot them,
- 1:05:11and they're like, no, no, they're trying to kill us, too.
- 1:05:13And he's like, get in, get in the car.
- 1:05:16And he doesn't ever, at any point get on this radio.
- 1:05:20Ever. No, no, no, he checks the
- 1:05:22radio's cut. He doesn't even have like his
- 1:05:25little hip radio though. Yeah, I guess you just didn't
- 1:05:27have it with him. But the one inside the cop car
- 1:05:30is cut. Like like while he was doing
- 1:05:32that somebody got in his car and fucked it all up because he
- 1:05:34can't even start the car. Anymore.
- 1:05:35Yeah, the battery line has been cut.
- 1:05:38I don't know cars. It's the thing that makes it
- 1:05:40car. Car no go.
- 1:05:43Car no go. Anymore.
- 1:05:44Yeah, so. He gets out, he's popping the
- 1:05:47hood to check out. That's a bad move, man.
- 1:05:50You should know. Yeah, never do that.
- 1:05:52He pops the hood and then as he does that a course sinks up
- 1:05:56behind him and stabs him. Yep, he's dead.
- 1:05:58Yep. So of course they're back in
- 1:06:01their fucking room. They use a towel rod to bust the
- 1:06:05window in the bathroom and they leave a fake trail.
- 1:06:08They tear Amy's shirt so it looks like she manages to
- 1:06:11squeeze through and he puts her up in the attic.
- 1:06:16Yeah, and they notice like, there's like a little crawl
- 1:06:18space up there. So she's gonna hide up there and
- 1:06:21he's gonna like, hold his own, I guess.
- 1:06:24Yes, he he's gonna, he is gonna run to the office for the other
- 1:06:296 shooter that was over the doorway.
- 1:06:33And he thinks that they're gonna be distracted enough by that
- 1:06:36trail to be trying to figure out where they went.
- 1:06:38But just kidding. They had somebody post it out
- 1:06:41the front door too. Yeah.
- 1:06:42And he's immediately stabbed. Yep.
- 1:06:43Yep. Like a lot.
- 1:06:44Yeah, a lot like he's probably gonna die, you would think.
- 1:06:48Yeah, and they're like putting a camera in his face as this is
- 1:06:51happening. Yeah, which is really just rude.
- 1:06:54And they go search for Amy. Yep, and we now get a little
- 1:06:58time cut. It's daytime, it's morning.
- 1:07:01Amy climbs down. Wish we had had.
- 1:07:06Yeah, that would have been funny.
- 1:07:08She hops down and as soon as she hops down, there was a guy
- 1:07:11waiting for. Her.
- 1:07:14In my head, I have this whole cannon of the two killer guys,
- 1:07:18one is the mechanic. We don't know who this third
- 1:07:19person is, but he's just a guy and they don't actually like the
- 1:07:24clerk, but they just listen to him when he's around that they
- 1:07:27know that they could actually like.
- 1:07:28He's just the one selling the tapes.
- 1:07:30They figured they could take that over if they had to.
- 1:07:33He's the financer, he's the producer, they're the movie
- 1:07:36makers. Yeah, they just, they don't want
- 1:07:37to deal with him, but they have to deal with his bullshit.
- 1:07:40So I feel like they spent like 10 minutes pretending to look
- 1:07:43for Amy, and they're like, all right, I'm gonna wait in the
- 1:07:45bathroom because she'll eventually show up and this is
- 1:07:48awesome. What?
- 1:07:48I mean, like, why didn't they do anything else, though?
- 1:07:51Like, why didn't they try? If they think she's gonna come
- 1:07:53back, why didn't they check the ceiling?
- 1:07:55I don't know. Well, in in one of the tapes
- 1:07:58that you get to see, like when they're done killing a guy, they
- 1:08:01just kind of like go like one of the dudes just like goes to the
- 1:08:03bed and lays down. I think they just like
- 1:08:05decompress. After all.
- 1:08:06It's like that's a long ass night of killing and making a
- 1:08:09movie. I'm tired.
- 1:08:10Yeah, So I just, I don't know, this is weird.
- 1:08:13She manages to run from this killer.
- 1:08:16There's another one that's outside too.
- 1:08:18She gets into a car, manages to get it to start.
- 1:08:21This other killer comes up and he does a Michael Myers on her
- 1:08:24where he's like on the roof of the car reaching in, trying to
- 1:08:27stab her. And she crashes into the motel,
- 1:08:31pins the mechanic against the wall, and the guy that was
- 1:08:34hanging through the sunroof dies because he's not actually
- 1:08:38Michael Myers. Yeah, that's not an ideal place
- 1:08:40to be in a car crash. Yeah, that is the opposite of
- 1:08:43what all of the safety regulations say you should do to
- 1:08:46be safe in a car crash. And the car hit the well, the
- 1:08:50dude that got hit by the car and depending against the wall his
- 1:08:53mask fell off and it's revealed that it's the mechanic.
- 1:08:57I feel like I already said it was the mechanic.
- 1:08:58Did you? Oh well, you got to mention the
- 1:09:00real because it's so dramatic. Is it?
- 1:09:03Yeah, the way it is. Like, Can you believe it?
- 1:09:06It was him. We figured out it was him a
- 1:09:08while ago. No, you didn't.
- 1:09:10We knew he was part of it. You can suspect that, but it's
- 1:09:13revealed here. It looked like him in one of the
- 1:09:16tapes even though whatever. Yeah, whatever.
- 1:09:20Dead. So she gets out and she tries to
- 1:09:24run into the office to get the gun.
- 1:09:27She does run in there, and she goes into video Island, covers
- 1:09:31that trapdoor and is trying to call 911 again.
- 1:09:34They're like, we already sent somebody out.
- 1:09:35She goes, he's dead. Do you notice that you didn't
- 1:09:37come back? He's dead.
- 1:09:37Yeah. They're like, OK.
- 1:09:38Fine, fine, we'll send somebody else.
- 1:09:41And she grabs a mallet. She tries to grab the other gun,
- 1:09:44but while she's reaching for it, oh, she didn't actually make the
- 1:09:47call yet. We're liars.
- 1:09:49She didn't make the call yet. So she goes into the office, she
- 1:09:53goes in a video aisle and tries to cover the trapdoor and then
- 1:09:56she's no hold on and she's looking around for weapons.
- 1:09:59She finds a mallet and then she also tries to reach for that 6
- 1:10:02shooter over the door. And as she's doing it, the clerk
- 1:10:05comes in and is choking her. So they're having this whole
- 1:10:08fight, right? And he will get to points where
- 1:10:11he's choking her and then she throws him off.
- 1:10:14And at one point he has her almost dead and he's ready to
- 1:10:19ready to kill her. And she ends up jumping up and
- 1:10:23she runs. She gets the gun and she shoots
- 1:10:25him a bunch and she walks out. David is still alive.
- 1:10:30How I am? Shocked.
- 1:10:34Yeah, Bravo. So this is where she goes back
- 1:10:36in. She gets the phone cable from
- 1:10:39the clerk's pocket. He had pulled it and was using
- 1:10:42that to try to strangle her. Yeah.
- 1:10:44So she gets that cable, plugs in the phone, calls 91.
- 1:10:46And this is where they say, oh, somebody already responded.
- 1:10:50And she was like, yeah, he died like a while ago, like four or
- 1:10:54five hours ago. Yeah, and she goes back out
- 1:10:57there and she is just kind of holding David and the camera
- 1:11:02pans out and we don't see anything else.
- 1:11:04Yeah, You're left to just kind of assume what happened.
- 1:11:06Although we did have an alternate opening to this movie,
- 1:11:10which basically starts off from this point.
- 1:11:12It's just showing the aftermath with all the cops and paramedics
- 1:11:15there. Just.
- 1:11:17Yeah, the scene, like as it is, we don't see any of our
- 1:11:21characters, though, so we don't we still don't have confirmation
- 1:11:24about what happened. Nope.
- 1:11:26That's how the movie ends. Yeah, that's how it ends.
- 1:11:29I think I'm still going to keep it a 7.5.
- 1:11:31I would bump it higher if like the last little bit was just a
- 1:11:36little bit tighter. OK, yeah, it kind of does lose a
- 1:11:39little bit of its team there at the end, but I'm going to keep
- 1:11:42it as an 8. For me, I I like this movie.
- 1:11:45It's a good tense ride, even if the ending isn't 100%
- 1:11:49satisfying. I would have been really mad if
- 1:11:52David did die because like, I feel like we can't.
- 1:11:56Have our sequel of their adrenaline marriage therapy.
- 1:11:58Well, yeah, there's that. But also just after everything,
- 1:12:02like having him die, I would have felt bad.
- 1:12:05You know, I wonder if he did die in like an original ending and
- 1:12:09they did like a test screening and they're like, OK, fine,
- 1:12:11we'll make him live, whatever. And this is what I'm gonna say
- 1:12:14that I think Luke could do Wedding Crashers, but I don't
- 1:12:19think Owen could do vacancy. You don't think Owen can do
- 1:12:22vacancy? I think Owen actually could pull
- 1:12:23this one off. He's got serious acting chops.
- 1:12:30I don't know. No, I'll, I'll give it to you.
- 1:12:31Like there are roles that Luke can do that one cannot do.
- 1:12:35But I think. And I think there are plenty
- 1:12:37that Owen could do that Luke couldn't do.
- 1:12:39Like, I, I think it goes both ways.
- 1:12:40Both ways. Yeah.
- 1:12:42But I I don't see Owen Wilson in this one.
- 1:12:45OK. Yeah, I think it is better
- 1:12:51suited for Luke if I had to pick between them.
- 1:12:53Yeah, Yeah, I can agree with that.
- 1:12:56OK. Hell yeah.
- 1:12:59And that's the rule of our game is that you can't just say you
- 1:13:02have to give scenarios where they can swap or can't swap.
- 1:13:06Yeah, exactly. You have to go both ways.
- 1:13:07With them, yeah. Talia the first half of this
- 1:13:12movie. She was hangry, as was Zoe.
- 1:13:17Yeah, as were all of them. It was.
- 1:13:19It was really aggressive. It was, yeah.
- 1:13:21It was kind of a frightening time to be in this house, but
- 1:13:25they got fed and then they were all sleepy and cuddly after the
- 1:13:27fact. I think Talia, she, she doesn't
- 1:13:31really care for hotels. She's been in them before.
- 1:13:35Not her favorite. She can't run around to her
- 1:13:38heart's content and she's not allowed to bark.
- 1:13:41So I think that this would be stressful for her because she's
- 1:13:45not supposed to bark in here. But we got people knocking on
- 1:13:47doors and that's not allowed ever.
- 1:13:49Yeah, you like, how can you not bark at something like that?
- 1:13:52So this is stressful. This is a stressful movie for
- 1:13:54her. I think she's going to give this
- 1:13:55A7, OK. I can agree with that.
- 1:13:58Yeah, she, she put up like a wall too.
- 1:14:01She didn't want to see that shit.
- 1:14:02She was like, I'm done with this.
- 1:14:04Yeah, she's like, I'm over all of this right now.
- 1:14:06OK, who is Zoe's ultimate warrior?
- 1:14:13Would it be Amy because of that Apple?
- 1:14:20I think I think it would be Amy because of dropping from the
- 1:14:26ceiling when it's morning time. Cuz.
- 1:14:28She jumps on us from the top of the headboard when she thinks
- 1:14:32it's breakfast time. You know that's true.
- 1:14:34Like whenever it's morning. So it's like, all right, I'm
- 1:14:36coming down, y'all all right. People's Elbow.
- 1:14:40Yeah, OK. Who'd you relate to?
- 1:14:45I related to Amy on the serious note because I'm not a person
- 1:14:50that likes to talk about my grief, but on a less serious
- 1:14:52note because I would probably also fall asleep in this
- 1:14:55scenario because when I'm sleepy, I'm sleepy and my body
- 1:14:57doesn't say no. OK, I can relate to David and
- 1:15:03like the trying to bring up good things to cheer up a mood type
- 1:15:07thing right there. I I understood where he was
- 1:15:10coming from, how he was trying to handle the bad vibes.
- 1:15:13But you know, not always an audience for that when that
- 1:15:17happens and I can understand that, you know, like I I got
- 1:15:21where he was coming from with the also I related to the the
- 1:15:25manager like if I it was a good slow night for me, I'd go into
- 1:15:28the backroom and I'd play some probably like two other people
- 1:15:32horrific shit. If they overheard what I was
- 1:15:34watching, I'd. Be like, don't pay attention to
- 1:15:37what you're hearing in the backroom.
- 1:15:38It's. Fine, it's a scary movie, I
- 1:15:40promise, not a snuff film. So you say.
- 1:15:45OK, all right, now let's do Dream sequel, let's expand.
- 1:15:49Or do we need to do we need to. I think we did make it, yeah.
- 1:15:53I mean, it's a crossover from Joyride.
- 1:15:55Yeah. And we got rusty.
- 1:15:57Now he's. He is not about to be killed.
- 1:16:02He is about to do some horrific shit to them.
- 1:16:06Does he record it? Does he take over their?
- 1:16:08Absolutely. Business yeah like the guy
- 1:16:11before like the guy like if it was rusty know that showed up
- 1:16:14there and picking up the boxes like oh am I going to be in this
- 1:16:17thing I think the idea of him being in the movie made him want
- 1:16:20to get into the movie making business yeah so he's like fine
- 1:16:23I'll you. Got his first taste to stardom.
- 1:16:25Got my taste of success. I think I'm gonna you know,
- 1:16:27chase this right here. I have potential to be a real
- 1:16:29some film star, so that's what he does.
- 1:16:32He sets out to be a like, he's the guy that stars, directs,
- 1:16:36writes. Yes, he does.
- 1:16:37Produces, does. Everything does editing.
- 1:16:40Yeah, it's all him. Yeah, he's gotta pick up because
- 1:16:43the guy that was making this movie is now dead.
- 1:16:46Yeah, it's gotta take over. All right, OK.
- 1:16:53OK. I think what would Don do?
- 1:16:56What would Don do first of all? I would like to see actually Vin
- 1:17:02Diesel in this situation. How would Don handle this I.
- 1:17:05Think we would never the problem is we would never get into the
- 1:17:10situation because if his car breaks down he is gonna know how
- 1:17:13to fix it. I think this is just one where
- 1:17:15like it ends before it even starts.
- 1:17:18Also I gotta just say like he wouldn't, him and Letty wouldn't
- 1:17:22be attached to a kid because they got a different kid every
- 1:17:24fucking movie. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:17:26They're not attached to any single child.
- 1:17:28Little Brian changes yeah, to the movies.
- 1:17:30So they'd be like, literally just give us any child that's
- 1:17:33approximately the right age. I was like, remember Brian?
- 1:17:38I mean Charlie? Who the fuck was that kid?
- 1:17:40Again, because the first baby didn't have a name for the first
- 1:17:42few months of its life. So we can just change baby.
- 1:17:44So true. Yeah, they didn't even give a
- 1:17:47fuck about that baby. Yeah, and Dom would know how to
- 1:17:52fix a car. Yeah, it's not.
- 1:17:54I mean, yeah, like it that. That's not a blade bent,
- 1:17:58motherfucker. Blades don't bend.
- 1:18:00Yeah, like they would. Yeah, this would just this is
- 1:18:03one that it would it's a non starter for them.
- 1:18:05Yeah, it's just this movie doesn't happen.
- 1:18:07With. These characters here, it's like
- 1:18:09they're the antithesis to all of these people here.
- 1:18:12This is the other side of the Fast and the Furious movies, if
- 1:18:15you've got people who aren't good at cards.
- 1:18:17Yeah, exactly. Yeah, OK, cool.
- 1:18:19All right. Well, I guess we should do our
- 1:18:21reviews now. Do do we not want to do a new
- 1:18:23tagline? Oh, new tagline, but you had the
- 1:18:26perfect one. OK, do you want to spear
- 1:18:27Halloween it then? Like did you think about it at
- 1:18:29any? Yeah, you can turn in your key
- 1:18:32card anytime you like, but you cannot depart.
- 1:18:35Yes, that is it. Holy shit that is perfect for
- 1:18:40this right here. God that is amazing.
- 1:18:43Thank you. OK cool, now let's get to some
- 1:18:47reviews. OK so I grabbed us an IMDb
- 1:18:51review. I thought you might like it.
- 1:18:54I couldn't tell for sure. So it's a one out 10 titled
- 1:18:57Vacancy. The space between the film
- 1:18:58makers ears. Damn that was brutal right
- 1:19:03there. Cutting and this vile American
- 1:19:07cinema atrocity is yet another excuse to show deranged or
- 1:19:11degrading cruelty as some sort of Friday night popcorn fun
- 1:19:14experience for impressionable teens to be further desensitized
- 1:19:18to misogynist movie brutality. Is Kate Beckinsale or Luke
- 1:19:22Wilson so poor that they need to make this film?
- 1:19:26What is it with Hollywood film makers and this torture porn
- 1:19:30film? Vacancy is yet again a riff on
- 1:19:33Psycho, but with pitiless, pitiless violence snuff theme
- 1:19:37added. The DVD actually has the full
- 1:19:40snuff atrocity films only glimpsed at in the movie itself.
- 1:19:44This is simply some sort of crime.
- 1:19:46It serves no purpose except to shoehorn the idea of actually
- 1:19:50watching a snuff movie into the audience's head.
- 1:19:53These films are made to look real.
- 1:19:56The closest to seeing the real thing is so complete that it
- 1:19:59leaves any sane viewer with the urge to cry with despair they
- 1:20:02can see is a disgrace, A vile idea and a disgusting result.
- 1:20:07It serves no purpose at all than to further degrade the wants art
- 1:20:11of cinema and further adds to the keenness of criminal level
- 1:20:15film makers who want to enjoy profiting from an audience for
- 1:20:19this cruelty. Like the equally atrocious
- 1:20:22Hostel or Wolf Creek, this imbecile brain damage movie is
- 1:20:26made for rapists and classmate killers in training.
- 1:20:30That's a little harsh right there.
- 1:20:32I don't even think that this movie is that like harsh with
- 1:20:35its material like that the you'd.
- 1:20:37Have to show a lot more up close of the torturing for it to be.
- 1:20:44I think. Quote UN quote for true porn.
- 1:20:45This is an incredibly sheltered person, I think because like, if
- 1:20:50you go on there and look at it like real shit, it doesn't hold
- 1:20:53a candle to what we watched in this movie right here.
- 1:20:56Like, yeah, it's some pretty disturbing themes, but it's a
- 1:20:58horror movie, you know? Like, I don't think it crosses
- 1:21:01any boundaries with what it did here.
- 1:21:03I think it it was just setting up a terrifying premise, which
- 1:21:07is like, there are people out there that do this thing, and if
- 1:21:10you're stuck in like that, that's a scary premise.
- 1:21:14That's a scary situation to be put in.
- 1:21:16I think that's something that people can relate to.
- 1:21:19Yeah. And yeah, I mean, you don't have
- 1:21:21to like it, then you don't have to watch it.
- 1:21:23Yeah, I can see how this film isn't for everybody.
- 1:21:26I don't like the whole like snuff film premise of it, but I
- 1:21:29do think it does it better than like, let's say, 13 cameras.
- 1:21:34That one's definitely a lot more misogynistic.
- 1:21:36Yeah, yeah, I, I didn't. Notice a lot more sexual and
- 1:21:39exploitative in nature. This is like I.
- 1:21:42Didn't understand the misogyny. I mean, there's like.
- 1:21:46One of the tapes shows the women that are being attacked and we
- 1:21:49have some nudity in that, but that's.
- 1:21:51Yeah, it just seemed like a situational thing, like it
- 1:21:53didn't seem like it was targeted because of that.
- 1:21:55Like they got like 2 dudes together too you.
- 1:21:57Know, and I get like some of the shots that David takes it, Amy,
- 1:22:02but that's more like a relationship breakdown.
- 1:22:06Yeah, I don't know. I want to pick this person's
- 1:22:10brain a little bit to understand more where they're coming from.
- 1:22:13But either way, I can see why this wouldn't be somebody's cup
- 1:22:17of tea. But I think it does a lot of
- 1:22:20good little film making tricks, especially in the first like 2/3
- 1:22:25of it. Yeah, I agree.
- 1:22:27OK, well with that out of the way, let's do the listener
- 1:22:31reviews. Do we have listener reviews?
- 1:22:33It's everybody's saying that they've never seen this movie
- 1:22:35before. Wow.
- 1:22:37Yeah. Which, you know, like now maybe
- 1:22:40check it out if you can. It's, I mean, we recommend it,
- 1:22:44but like I said before, if I cannot find, if I don't get
- 1:22:47listener reviews, I'm going to get reviews from weird sources.
- 1:22:52This time I went to one of those Christian review websites where
- 1:22:56they asked the child they thought of this movie.
- 1:22:59Comments from young people and is young.
- 1:23:03People, necessarily children. Not really.
- 1:23:05This is a 16 year old but they're not an adult.
- 1:23:07They shouldn't be watching this film technically, but this is
- 1:23:11thoughts of a 16 year old named Kay who saw this.
- 1:23:16This movie was not only morally corrupt but extremely
- 1:23:19disappointing. There were a couple of G DS and
- 1:23:22a shrew of other cuss words as well as some.
- 1:23:27There was also a lot of violence, but the point of the
- 1:23:30movie to make the viewer be on the edge of their seat was
- 1:23:33totally lost. I didn't find it scary or
- 1:23:35suspenseful whatsoever and was very disappointed when it ended
- 1:23:38really quickly without any resolution.
- 1:23:41Save your money and don't see this movie.
- 1:23:43OK, listen, you can have your film making critiques of it.
- 1:23:47I expect the language and stuff. Yeah, new to do from the
- 1:23:50Christian website, but like there is resolution like all the
- 1:23:54bad guys nod. Yeah, I think they mean like
- 1:23:57open-ended with the characters that we're following.
- 1:24:00Like, do they, are they together?
- 1:24:01Does he survive? I wanted the couple to go get
- 1:24:04saved and have more babies. Like, yeah, yeah, like.
- 1:24:08Rediscover God. Yeah, probably I, you know,
- 1:24:12maybe we'll pick their brain or we could have picked their brain
- 1:24:14and see what they wanted out of the there was like.
- 1:24:17This wild Christian movie I saw one time, not out of my own
- 1:24:22choice, but it involved a guy meeting this woman who's a
- 1:24:26professional dancer, and they fall in love.
- 1:24:30But she's like, you can't be in love with me.
- 1:24:31I can't have kids. I've lost children.
- 1:24:34And it turned out that she just needed to fine God because she
- 1:24:40was ungodly and had an eating disorder before and that's why
- 1:24:43she miscarried. So it was really her own heathen
- 1:24:45fault that she can have kids before and the end of the movie
- 1:24:47is them having lots of kids and her being a dance instructor but
- 1:24:50not a professional like stage dancer anymore.
- 1:24:53That's that sounds awful. Yeah, So, yeah, so that's what
- 1:25:01I'm picturing they want for the couple at the end of this
- 1:25:03probably. Yeah, like she admitted that the
- 1:25:06Charlie Seth was her fault and now she can repent and atone and
- 1:25:11they can have kids. More kids.
- 1:25:13Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't want that sequel.
- 1:25:17Yeah. I don't either.
- 1:25:19OK, cool. Well, that's it then.
- 1:25:21That's it for the reviews. That means it's it for this
- 1:25:23week's episode. OK, Thanks everybody for being
- 1:25:26here. And you know, if you haven't
- 1:25:27watched it, I hope you do watch it.
- 1:25:29Yeah, I hope you get a chance to see it.
- 1:25:30And I would have thought more people watched it.
- 1:25:33So I'm sorry we dropped spoilers early on in the discussion.
- 1:25:36So. Yeah.
