Transcript
- 0:00John Summers is the motoring historian.
- 0:02He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept
- 0:07sports bike rider hailing from California.
- 0:10He collects cars and bikes built with plenty of cheap and
- 0:12fast and not much reliable.
- 0:15On his show, he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new
- 0:18and old cars driving motorbikes, motor racing, and motoring travel.
- 0:34Good day.
- 0:36Good morning, good afternoon.
- 0:37It is John Summers, the motoring historian, part two of Pebble Beach
- 0:422025, as reviewed by me and the boy today looking at, uh, the time that
- 0:48we spent at the Monterey Historics.
- 0:49At Laguna Seka and the big show itself, that Pebble Beach, Concord de la go.
- 0:56We didn't really do the auctions as thoroughly as we might
- 0:58have done this year, did we?
- 0:59Because the next day we went to Laguna Acre and camped.
- 1:02I mean, I love the G of Seka.
- 1:04All the categories.
- 1:06Their categories are like all my favorites.
- 1:08Like there's a group C category.
- 1:10I love Group C Cars.
- 1:11My favorite car ever behind the Licken house, oh oh seven LMH car
- 1:17is the Porsche 9 6 2 in Texaco.
- 1:19Liveries.
- 1:19There was one there.
- 1:20I You didn't know.
- 1:22I didn't see that car.
- 1:23Oh, there was a Texaco 9 6 2 there.
- 1:26So, just to be clear, we went out on the Friday, didn't we?
- 1:29We did the auctions on the Thursday.
- 1:30There was, there was a Formula One class that was on the, on the Friday
- 1:34we licked our wounds at the ridge Mark.
- 1:36Then we came back on the Friday.
- 1:39I got up, that was the day where I got up at the cracker of Scro.
- 1:42You have a sleep in?
- 1:43And I went shopping, didn't I?
- 1:45I was back with the shopping before like eight o'clock in the morning.
- 1:48Bacon with my Wagyu beef burgers that never break.
- 1:51Never got eaten.
- 1:52Yeah.
- 1:52We're gonna have.
- 1:53For dinner tonight, we're gonna eat.
- 1:55We're and they're gonna be much better cooked up by your mother
- 1:58than cooked up by, uh, cooked up on that Terrible cooked up by Jack.
- 2:01No, I'm not knocking Jack.
- 2:04I'm not knocking.
- 2:04Jack.
- 2:05Jack made our dinner, so I'm not knocking he for that.
- 2:07He, yeah, he did.
- 2:08Jason did.
- 2:09The burgers that we ate were Jack.
- 2:11Oh, the sausages with Jason.
- 2:13I have a funny story about, but, but listen, but listen.
- 2:16Right, so we went out to the track, the campsite, we camped, didn't we?
- 2:19With Jack, with the, with the Joy Titus.
- 2:23In the bed that now the Joy Titus is a custom air mattress.
- 2:27I'm gonna add it then made for the 2016 Toyota Tundra.
- 2:31This is not sponsored.
- 2:31This is not sponsored.
- 2:33You can get the Joy Titus at a price of it was 79 bucks.
- 2:38Anyway, 79 bucks.
- 2:39And to be honest, commend it.
- 2:40Don't for a comfortable night's sleep.
- 2:42I don't recommend it.
- 2:43You don't?
- 2:44I don't recommend it.
- 2:45If it hadn't rained, we'd have been all right.
- 2:47I don't recommend the joy if we hadn't have been right on top of the hill
- 2:50where it was really windy, where I couldn't even get the canvas in the bed.
- 2:54Right.
- 2:54There were six men there.
- 2:57There was Jack and his son.
- 3:00And then there's another friend of my dad's who's has a son.
- 3:04And then there is a man wearing a man wore shirt in this room who
- 3:09also has his son because we were on the outside of the raining curves.
- 3:12That's why Jack, there wasn't it?
- 3:14There were, there was my dad and two of my dad's friends, they all had sons.
- 3:18We were all about the same age.
- 3:20And anyway, the point is we all brought bikes.
- 3:23The place where we were like camping, it was like loose gravel basically.
- 3:27And everybody's out there like sitting in their camping chairs.
- 3:32You know there is one man, Jean shorts, jorts.
- 3:37Plaid, is that what they call it now?
- 3:38Short.
- 3:39Sleep.
- 3:39Yeah.
- 3:40Jorts and Lucas loves them, dude.
- 3:43Um,
- 3:45well seriously, or in an ironic way?
- 3:48Kind of both.
- 3:48He only likes them 'cause his dad.
- 3:50'cause Eric hates them a good, he's like, he, you were in the store and
- 3:55he was like, my dad would love those.
- 3:58And he points out like some army camo shorts.
- 4:02Anyway.
- 4:02Anyway, so there was a man in a Ferrari hat in a plaid shirt
- 4:05with jorts on short sleeve shirt.
- 4:08Anyway, like loose surface is really going to drift on, on your pedal Bikes
- 4:12we're drifting around and I, on my bike came up and I drifted not in front
- 4:19of the guy, but like in proximity.
- 4:22How far away to the Ferrari house, how far away would you say you were from him?
- 4:26Seven feet.
- 4:27Six feet, probably six feet, and he was like.
- 4:31Yo, fuck off man.
- 4:33You're kicking up a bunch of dust.
- 4:36And I was like, okay.
- 4:37So I went over and I told my friend, Alessandro, he, he's a
- 4:41little bit of a troublemaker.
- 4:44As soon as I told him that story and what he said, Alessandro's
- 4:48like, I'm gonna go and piss him off.
- 4:50That's exactly what he said.
- 4:51I'm gonna go and piss him off.
- 4:53So me and Luca were watching him ride off and he drifted, you want me to
- 4:58name the feet we need to go into, we need to go into inches for this one.
- 5:03He drifted like eight inches away from his, away from him, and the dude in the
- 5:09Ferrari hat went, he, he grabbed his leg and went, man, a little rock, kidney.
- 5:17And these rocks are like the signs of pebbles.
- 5:19He was like, ow, man.
- 5:21This pebble just hit me.
- 5:28Anyway, that was just the story of Mr. Ferrari hat.
- 5:32Well, thank you for, for the, for the inappropriate Anglosaxon story.
- 5:37Um, and you might well think if my mother's listening, she
- 5:40would think, well, not only.
- 5:42Where you were?
- 5:43Where were you, Jonathan?
- 5:44And I would say that I was nearby.
- 5:46I was only a short distance away when this was taking place.
- 5:49But you only heard until the following day?
- 5:52Well, because I said to you that night when we went to bed, I was like, 'cause
- 5:56you boys were riding around all the time.
- 5:58I was like, you must have had some adventures.
- 5:59Not all.
- 6:00Did anything happen?
- 6:01And you were like, no, no.
- 6:02There were no incidents.
- 6:03There were no incident.
- 6:04And then in the morning, then in the morning when we were having coffee, you
- 6:07were like, oh, that bloke over there.
- 6:09He told me to off.
- 6:11And the thing with it is those people on that side of the campsite, right?
- 6:14If you were camping over there, you couldn't see the track.
- 6:16Like why would you camp over there like where we were?
- 6:19You could see down onto the track, right?
- 6:20No, but the reason we, where they were recently, we took
- 6:23the Ferrari, that was it.
- 6:25The bloke with, was it the bloke with that escort mark?
- 6:26What?
- 6:27The bloke was near that escort mark one.
- 6:29I don't know what you're talking about.
- 6:30There was a car that was covered in a tar over there.
- 6:32It was like an escort mark, one that had kind of two big wheels on it.
- 6:36It was bluish.
- 6:37We kind of took the Ferrari hatted guy for granted because at his word
- 6:42and did well, I just wanna point out that if he would've said, Hey,
- 6:48can you not drift in front of me?
- 6:50And this all would've played out differently.
- 6:52He wouldn't have swear, or maybe it would've 'cause he's annoying,
- 6:55but, well, he swore at you.
- 6:56If he hadn't have sworn at you, it, it wouldn't have stro wouldn't
- 6:59have wanted that reaction.
- 7:00Mm-hmm.
- 7:01What else was memorable about the, uh, about the camping?
- 7:04Walking.
- 7:04Walking in the paddock that was very memorable.
- 7:07Walking around in the paddock with my friends, that was fun.
- 7:11What was cool about that?
- 7:12I was, because we're kids.
- 7:14Mm-hmm.
- 7:15There's kind of like a free pass to sitting in cars.
- 7:19Did you sit in a lot of cars then?
- 7:20Yeah.
- 7:21Or did you sit in Well, we sat in a bunch of mustangs.
- 7:24'cause like Ford was there.
- 7:26We sat in the new Mark four.
- 7:28I should have said that when we were still talking about it.
- 7:31No way.
- 7:32I didn't know that.
- 7:33Yeah, we did.
- 7:33Wow.
- 7:34Dude, that was Spro.
- 7:36We saw, we sat in a gold one.
- 7:38It was, I should say, I was the lights, I was tired by the time we got to, once
- 7:44we got to the camp, I was like few.
- 7:46I just like sat in the camp chair.
- 7:48You can see the CO from the spot where at we could see, could see porch,
- 7:51the cos group and you can see 'em going right round the rainy curve.
- 7:54Oh wow.
- 7:55During the Group C group I was watching, of course, 'cause
- 7:58it was my favorite group.
- 8:00And whatever the Groupness Nissans called came down the corkscrew and spam.
- 8:05He is a car length off or he's a car width.
- 8:10Off of the apex or no off of the exit?
- 8:13Mm-hmm.
- 8:14Where you're going to be on the exit.
- 8:15A Mazda 7 87 B comes down, spins, does like a J turn look
- 8:21and move sneaks past the Nissan.
- 8:23Nissan.
- 8:24Then a pink 9 6 2 comes up.
- 8:29And spins, barely avoiding the NI Nissan.
- 8:32The NI Nissan has moved by then there's yellow flags out just after this.
- 8:37The TransAm group and the Group C Group went at the same time
- 8:40'cause they were both small groups.
- 8:42A black TransAm car wasn't close enough to see what it was.
- 8:47Came down and.
- 8:49And then they closed it.
- 8:50Apparently the Nissan, Nissan had came in the power too.
- 8:54Early span dropped oil and that's why the 7 8 7 B span the 9 6 2
- 8:59span and the Trans Am car span.
- 9:02So there was an oil spill.
- 9:03The kitty litter truck came out, poured down some stuff, work back to racing.
- 9:09You boys went down to um, turn six as well.
- 9:12Yeah, that is, Jack was saying he reckons that's the best place for
- 9:14Jack was not lying when he said that was a really good place to.
- 9:18Set up why we went down there for this historic Formula one class
- 9:22and it's just, you're so close.
- 9:25Mm-hmm.
- 9:25To the cars, you feel like you could like reach out and touch them.
- 9:28The spot where you're watching, you can also camp there.
- 9:31If you're like 10 camping, you can camp there.
- 9:34Mm-hmm.
- 9:34So there was a bunch of people come out their tents on the
- 9:37inside of turn six or the outside.
- 9:39Outside.
- 9:40On the outside, that's the good place.
- 9:43'cause then they're taking the racing line.
- 9:45So they're on the outside of the track.
- 9:47Yeah.
- 9:47So then you're even closer to them.
- 9:48Where we were standing, there was just like a big drop off.
- 9:51And then the track there was just like, for me, and I'm
- 9:54short, I'm like four, eight.
- 9:56It's like neck height.
- 9:57Mm-hmm.
- 9:57Uh, of a fence.
- 9:58So if you really wanted to, you could climb down and just go down there.
- 10:01But we didn't do that.
- 10:03The historical one class, it was a very good spot for that class.
- 10:07You can see them like as they're like pounding the brake, you can see their
- 10:12body like shifted over to one side as they're trying to like downshift while
- 10:17they're like one handed, like turning in.
- 10:19It's just, it's a cool spot.
- 10:21I'm disappointed.
- 10:22I was too lazy to get down there.
- 10:24I think I was building the campsite.
- 10:25I was building the Joy Titus.
- 10:27Well, let's take a minute to talk about the night really quick.
- 10:30Oh.
- 10:31I mean, it rained.
- 10:33The night was a, was a adventure.
- 10:36Yeah.
- 10:36'cause when the sun goes, so they stopped racing about five 30 and it
- 10:39seemed like by six 30 the sun was down.
- 10:41We'd add like our burgers.
- 10:43By that time we'd made friends with the people at the campsite next.
- 10:46Yeah, yeah.
- 10:46These people, these people were cooking a pig and they'd be cooking
- 10:50it all day and we were meant to go down there, but we didn't end up going
- 10:53down to eat their pig sandwiches.
- 10:55Well, that was because the blokes next to us, they were a bunch of
- 10:57engineers and one of them his hobby.
- 11:00Was making distilled liquors.
- 11:02He made one especially called the Cork Screwed.
- 11:05That's cool.
- 11:06That's actually a good name.
- 11:07Yeah.
- 11:07The uh, but the, it was all like absent kind of flavors.
- 11:11He assured us they weren't poisonous.
- 11:13So, anything else about the overnight experience?
- 11:16Well, it rained, didn't it?
- 11:17So I could have bought a tent.
- 11:18Terrible Joy.
- 11:18Titus Terrible is just this inflatable mattress.
- 11:21I did buy Canvas to go over it, but, but it was so windy you
- 11:25couldn't get the Canvas card.
- 11:25I couldn't put that down.
- 11:26But I also bought bivy bags, which happened to be emergency single use thing.
- 11:31So we had the sleeping bags inside the bivy bag, didn't we?
- 11:34No.
- 11:34No.
- 11:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:35And we went to sleep and I woke up and it was raining and I was cold,
- 11:42and I realized I was cold because I was wearing a sweatshirt and jeans,
- 11:46sweatpants or whatever, pajama pants.
- 11:48I put my arm out of the sleeping bag.
- 11:52I don't know why I put it onto what I thought was the joyus, but actually
- 11:58there was a small gap between the Joyus and the bed wall and that had
- 12:03filled with water, and I just dumped my arm into that pool of water.
- 12:10My arm was like freezing like crazy.
- 12:13I was like trying to pull up my bivy bag, but it was all wet.
- 12:17It was like soaked, so it didn't really help you.
- 12:19And then like, oh shoot, now my hand's all cold.
- 12:22And it's like, oh no, I just touched a cold part of like a
- 12:25wet part of my sleeping bag.
- 12:27Shoot my other arm's freezing now.
- 12:30Yeah, it, it was, uh, it was an adventure.
- 12:32Not the best planning by me because when I woke up the second time, I really had to
- 12:38pee, but I was like so afraid to get outta my bag 'cause it was so wet and I left my
- 12:44shoes in the bed in between me and my dad.
- 12:48So I could like grab them if I had to go to the bathroom.
- 12:50But then I realized like, oh shoot, they're all soaked.
- 12:53Mm-hmm.
- 12:54I had to hold it till the morning.
- 12:56Yeah.
- 12:56There was no way you, like, you couldn't move at all, like roll over at all.
- 13:00'cause like you're worried you'll roll over into patch of wetness.
- 13:05Yeah.
- 13:05Well you would.
- 13:06You would, you would.
- 13:07Because uh, when we got up and we took our sleeping bags off, we had noticed
- 13:12that the Joy Titus had changed color.
- 13:15Yeah.
- 13:15So the water there was just like.
- 13:17Two imprints of dryness where our bodies had been.
- 13:21And then everything else, like in between us and all around us was
- 13:25just like this darker joy, tus color.
- 13:28Alessandra had some kind of flight or something to do from Hong Kong.
- 13:31Yeah, he was, he was gonna fly a plane or something, he said.
- 13:34I dunno.
- 13:35So, uh, they left he Jason and left really early, didn't they?
- 13:39And then, um.
- 13:39Jack and Luca hang on a little bit.
- 13:42And then they went, and then by about lunchtime, we were the only people.
- 13:45Yeah.
- 13:46On there.
- 13:46We were the only people on the campsite.
- 13:48So we trotted down to, um, the paddock area, got some chicken tenders.
- 13:53Well, you had some food.
- 13:55I was over it.
- 13:55By the time I couldn't eat anything by that time, slept properly.
- 13:59And we were, we were so tired and like fatigued, we were
- 14:02just like, oh, screw this.
- 14:03And we buggered back to the ridge mark.
- 14:07Yeah, we, uh, beat a hasty retreat back to the Ridge Mark Resort and Spa.
- 14:12Slept, showered, watch tv, recovered ourselves.
- 14:17And then what about the big show itself, Ollie, the first time biggest you
- 14:23ever went to the Pebble Beach Concord.
- 14:27So every year since I was like seven.
- 14:30I had gone to all the things we had just talked about.
- 14:33Instead of going back to the ridge mark, my dad would've took me home
- 14:36and then he would've driven back.
- 14:38'cause he was a docent.
- 14:39He would work on the day and he couldn't deal with me.
- 14:42But this year, the docent program had been canceled because
- 14:46three buses had got stuck.
- 14:48Explain that.
- 14:49And then, well, that's rather political.
- 14:52Actually, but the docent program has been downsized, hasn't they?
- 14:55And we think it's partly because last year a lot of certain kind of ticket holder
- 15:00had got stuck and had missed their tours.
- 15:02So people had felt like there were lots of extra docents and
- 15:06therefore, yeah, uh, fewer docent tours were required this year.
- 15:09So meaning that I could do this, do show with you.
- 15:13Definitely a silver lining in the cloud there.
- 15:15Yeah.
- 15:15So firstly it was nice to not have to get up at three o'clock to be
- 15:18able to, and you know, in order to be there at like five 30 kind of thing.
- 15:22It was nice to be able to get up at like, we drove right in, no traffic
- 15:26at, yeah, that's a big thing.
- 15:27Parked on, uh, yeah, drove right in without any like stoppy start and
- 15:31it, we went in on the highway 68.
- 15:34You know, highway one, highway 68 entrance.
- 15:37We went in that way and just drove straight in, no Stoppy Starty parked.
- 15:42They had us park up at the side of the road just round the
- 15:45corner from the Inn, Spanish Bay.
- 15:48We were on a bus straight away, straight into the show, dumps you out
- 15:51at the top of Peter Hay Hill, so you have to like walk down Peter Hay Hill.
- 15:55So there is quite a walk.
- 15:57But I realized that as we were getting there, you know, I was saying to Ali
- 16:00that there are really three shows.
- 16:02There's the actual concor.
- 16:04Then there's the concept car lawn.
- 16:06There's ca and then, then there's Casa Ferrari, because really Casa
- 16:09Ferrari's like up the hill from the main show, but there'll be like
- 16:1450, 60, maybe even as many as 80.
- 16:17There's, so there's a Ferrari out there.
- 16:18There's, there's a variety.
- 16:20There was a Ferrari 4 9, 9 P was there, Michael Schumacher's Formula
- 16:25One car was there, as we said earlier.
- 16:28But then there's also like GTOs.
- 16:30Yeah, there were three GTOs weren't there, that three 30 L and b that I
- 16:34love the three Tour de France together.
- 16:38So you could compare door handles and the color of the Loures
- 16:42and light covers and yeah.
- 16:43And so that was really cool.
- 16:45You spent a while explaining the difference to me between
- 16:48the four A eight gt I I, I said before, I love Group three cars.
- 16:53And there at Casa Ferrari there was four iterations of Ferrari Group three cars
- 17:00and I gave my dad a crash course on that.
- 17:02Yeah, there was a Ferrari four 10.
- 17:05That was probably my favorite car of the whole event.
- 17:08I loved the 3 7 5 plus that they had at rm, but I loved even
- 17:12more that X shall B four 10.
- 17:14They they, that was on, that was Upper Cara Ferrari.
- 17:16They also had Louis Hamilton's Ferrari Formula one car.
- 17:22I don't know how they did, 'cause like he's meant to like use it, but it was
- 17:26number 44, so it was definitely his.
- 17:28So that, that was cool.
- 17:30So the entrance of the show, there was the long look for Glick at house.
- 17:34Oh yeah.
- 17:34There was a, well it wasn't, it wasn't an LMH car, which was sad, but
- 17:40it was oh oh three or three oh oh.
- 17:43SC.
- 17:44G Scooter.
- 17:45Or Carmen.
- 17:46Or Carmen, I can't pronounce it.
- 17:48Licken house.
- 17:49It was a stick.
- 17:50So no paddles, which my dad was surprised by.
- 17:54Honestly.
- 17:54I was too.
- 17:55'cause it's, you could be seen or it is a super car brand.
- 17:59Little surprising.
- 18:00What'd you like on the concept Car?
- 18:02Well, it's hard to describe concept cars.
- 18:04Yeah.
- 18:04What did you like?
- 18:05That's why I said there was that Mercedes that are quite like Was the what?
- 18:09There was like that natural looking thing like, oh yeah.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:12It's hard for the viewers to know what's on the concept car.
- 18:16Along there was a, if you can name a car, I can put a link in and
- 18:19they can find it, but I can, well, that was that orange Mercedes.
- 18:23Something.
- 18:24Yeah, it was a tribute.
- 18:25Had six real tail lights, which I thought was cool.
- 18:28Two group three Porsches, one of which had like a tiger motif on it and two
- 18:34of the teeth were gold, which was cool.
- 18:36Oh yeah, yeah.
- 18:38Rexy.
- 18:38Yeah, Rexy.
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:40Alright.
- 18:40Onto the lawn.
- 18:42Onto the lawn itself.
- 18:43Big show itself.
- 18:45Ollie, how was that for you?
- 18:46First time it was great.
- 18:48I will forever go on the lawn when I can if I can.
- 18:52Much bigger than I expected.
- 18:54So many more cars than what went on tour.
- 18:57There were at least like a hundred more cars that went on that went on the tour.
- 19:00But 'cause my dad has insider connections, as you could say, we got some influence
- 19:07on who was best in class from some of the judges that my dad is friends with.
- 19:12Yeah.
- 19:12Well, we Ted around, didn't we?
- 19:14Well, I know one of the guys that judges preservation class, so we chatted
- 19:19with him a little bit, didn't we?
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:20Um, about what he, uh, what he looked like.
- 19:23I also know somebody who prepared one of the cars that was in the COBRA class,
- 19:29so we talked a little bit about that.
- 19:30Yeah, I had a good chat with him.
- 19:31He was impressed by my knowledge.
- 19:33Which felt good.
- 19:34Good.
- 19:35He's an episode.
- 19:36He, he owns three Cobras.
- 19:37You know that Tom Cota show Bonfire Hunter?
- 19:40Yeah.
- 19:40There's an episode where he is on that show where Steve's on that show.
- 19:43That's cool.
- 19:44Doesn't own those cars.
- 19:45He looks after the for people.
- 19:47Um, well, yeah.
- 19:48Another feature Mark, other than 75 years of.
- 19:51Formula one was, um, cobra.
- 19:53So they had the best examples of every iteration of Cobra.
- 19:58So they had the closed top ones, they had the narrow hip ones, which those
- 20:03are the ones where the fender goes over the rear wheel, which I don't like.
- 20:06They had the classic open, top, regular hip, or straight, not over the wheel.
- 20:12And, uh, they had some, a race open top ones.
- 20:16They had like at least two of the best examples of every iteration.
- 20:20I was kind of surprised they didn't have Carol Shelby's actual car.
- 20:24'cause you're at Pebble Beach.
- 20:26I don't know.
- 20:26It's probably destroyed or something.
- 20:28Well, it was also big block cars only.
- 20:31It was four 20 sevens only.
- 20:32Yeah.
- 20:33But why would Shelby have a small block?
- 20:35Well, because he originally had a small block and the small block cars
- 20:37were always meant to be much more streetable than the big block cars.
- 20:40True.
- 20:41But yeah, I and Shelby must be handy.
- 20:44I take your point that you might have expected to be a car where
- 20:48the Shelby connection, there was a class of moretti's, wasn't that?
- 20:52Which is tiny, tiny cars.
- 20:54Like little.
- 20:54I feel like if I feel like that could be my, I could drive that if I had
- 20:58to pick a car to drive right now.
- 21:00I could drive that.
- 21:01The class of Invictus that was the best in one of the Invictus was best in class.
- 21:07Well, our best in in show.
- 21:09No, no.
- 21:10Yeah, it was that brownie.
- 21:12The best in show was the Hispano Swer tulip.
- 21:16Oh, I get these things mixed up.
- 21:17I should tell you a little story about that.
- 21:19I knew that car.
- 21:20But when I saw it on the field, I was like, oh, it's a tulip wood,
- 21:23but it is not as handsome as the one that was in the Blackhawk.
- 21:27Well, this is the same car, but it's been redone and in my opinion,
- 21:34it's been redone to be less elegant.
- 21:37The problem is what the problem is.
- 21:39It's been really done well.
- 21:40It's probably stock.
- 21:40It's probably stock.
- 21:41And that's why it's one.
- 21:42Yes.
- 21:42Because if the more, I mean that's what, that's the little bit of the
- 21:46confusing part of Pebble Beach.
- 21:48'cause it's like.
- 21:49Elegance, I'll take off the pony wheels and put on the American racing
- 21:54ones, and then it's like stalk.
- 21:57I take off the American wheels and put it back on the ponies.
- 22:01Yeah.
- 22:01The thought of a Fox Mustang appearing on the Concor audit
- 22:04Pebble is, is, well, that's just, that's just not, that's the first.
- 22:08That, but that, no, but no, but that's example, that's a really
- 22:11great way of, of thinking about it.
- 22:12Ollie.
- 22:13Um, just back to the cobras, the close top is called the lm
- 22:17and Jim Farley was at Laguna.
- 22:20He's the CEO of Ford.
- 22:21If he didn't know he was at Laguna, he has a LM edition Cobra.
- 22:25So close top.
- 22:26He won his race pretty Hadley.
- 22:28He just drove off at the front, didn't he?
- 22:30And he, he owned, did he own a BRM?
- 22:33He owned that BRM that was on the lawn.
- 22:35Oh, really?
- 22:37The Graham Hill one, if you've seen the movie Grand Prix.
- 22:40What?
- 22:40What's, yeah, well name.
- 22:41That was my favorite car in the, oh, there's era, so sixties Era Bureau.
- 22:46Yeah.
- 22:47And it's the car that's driven by hot staar.
- 22:50Character, character, character.
- 22:51I get the, I'll get the pronunciation right in the end.
- 22:54Yeah.
- 22:54That tulip wood car, Ollie.
- 22:56It was built for the Targa Florio 1924 Targa Florio.
- 22:59We had it in the Blackhawk Museum and then I have a book about the history of
- 23:03the type of Flo and I was looking through it and I was like, it's a one of one.
- 23:07It looked nothing like it looked like in the museum.
- 23:10The car, it's one of one gold wheels and these ridiculous flairy arches put on it.
- 23:16That looks elegant.
- 23:18It's American wheels, dude.
- 23:19Exactly.
- 23:20They, it was more elegant with the American racing Wheels.
- 23:23What has happened to it since it's left?
- 23:25The Blackhawk is RM have put black wheels on it.
- 23:29They've taken the chuff mud flaps off it.
- 23:31Mudguards off it and now it's come to Pebble in Won.
- 23:34Yeah.
- 23:34So I was a buffoon to miss that it was potentially gonna win.
- 23:39There was that blue lancer that I thought was a potential winner.
- 23:42Yeah.
- 23:42We, we usually make predictions on like, who might be the best in show?
- 23:47Do that Ollie.
- 23:48I wouldn't, Ollie, I always get it.
- 23:49I, I know.
- 23:50I always miss it.
- 23:51I miss it.
- 23:51Look, you got it right.
- 23:52I literally just, you got it right a couple years ago in
- 23:54that black Mercedes, whatever.
- 23:56Oh, the auto barn courier.
- 23:59Yeah.
- 23:59When that one couple years ago on that one you said, oh, that could be best in show.
- 24:02Like we arrived late to the tour that year and you saw it driving by
- 24:06and you were like, that could win.
- 24:07Yeah, we followed it on the roads around Pebble, didn't we?
- 24:10Yeah.
- 24:10This was a couple years ago.
- 24:11Yeah.
- 24:12We'll, we'll do a link to that car.
- 24:13It was a lovely car.
- 24:15Is there anything else we need to cover about the week?
- 24:18I, I just wanna say this little, this little fact here.
- 24:20Pebble Beach used to be a kind of elegant whatever.
- 24:25The point is that it used to be one thing and now it's turned into this
- 24:29thing where it's like bring your McLaren six 50 s, bring your Ferrari SF 90 and
- 24:35it's become less of a bring your Porsche Boxster and you see more super cars.
- 24:40Then you do classic cars.
- 24:42I mean, I know I've only been going for however many years, and my dad's
- 24:45been going for, for like four years, and my dad's been going for like
- 24:48the last probably 20 years now, 20.
- 24:51Gosh, I think he can, I think he can back me on this, that there's
- 24:55less classic cars parked up and there's more super cars parked up.
- 24:58I don't know how, I think that's a, that is an interesting way of expressing
- 25:02how, how it's changed, I suppose.
- 25:03This is one thing that I've talked about in other post Pebble pods that
- 25:06I've done, where I've talked about how I feel like now there are many, many
- 25:10people who come to Pebble and who don't go to any of the same events that I do.
- 25:15Or that we do, they don't go to the star of the tour.
- 25:17They don't go to, they don't go to the main event.
- 25:20They definitely don't go to same.
- 25:20And they don't go to any of the auctions.
- 25:22They don't do any of the, most of the people at the track, the Ferrari hat.
- 25:25He was at the track for qualifying practice race one and race two.
- 25:29He was there for all four days.
- 25:30He was there for the Monterey Historics at Laguna Se and WeatherTech race wide.
- 25:34He wasn't there for Pebble Beach.
- 25:36Concourse de Yeah.
- 25:39And link to that.
- 25:41And we're gonna end on this note, Ollie, I cannot believe.
- 25:44We didn't mention the bedazzled Aston Martin Valkyrie that we stuff on the park.
- 25:49Oh yeah.
- 25:50So we went out to dinner to the Rio Grill.
- 25:53I stuffed my face with ribs and as we came out into the parking
- 25:56lot to hop into our $26,000 Toyota Tundra, $20,000 Toyota Tundra.
- 26:03We Konig Seg Rera, or I don't, I don't know.
- 26:08These supercar, there were three Konig Segs.
- 26:11Current.
- 26:11Just parked up, just parked like in Car Valley, just parked up in
- 26:14front of, in front of a Starbucks, in front of a Safeway in Car Valley.
- 26:17Next to that, there was a Aston Martin Valkyrie, which had, you
- 26:23must know those like sticker jewels.
- 26:25Cupboard in those.
- 26:27Yeah, I, I overheard the lady who had done it was just like parked up
- 26:31next to these outside of Starbucks.
- 26:33Um, so some whipper snapper, some lady, some lady teenage photographer
- 26:37guy was telling me that the guy that owned the Valkyrie is an influencer.
- 26:41Yeah.
- 26:42Everybody's like recording, like I'm standing next here to about $6 million
- 26:47worth of coning eggs and this bedazzled Valery and it's just like, shut up.
- 26:52But it was quite cool Sam witnessing that.
- 26:54It was cool.
- 26:55And I overheard this lady talking about, and she was like, this is my third car.
- 26:59I'm like, that she bedazzled the third car you've ruined
- 27:02it, added 15 pounds to the car.
- 27:05I heard.
- 27:05So, um, I was chatting to that teenage photographer Instagram type,
- 27:10um, and he was, uh, he was telling me that that Burgundy Kerig s that
- 27:15was the rera, the R two were left.
- 27:17Yeah, apparently he reckons that was the actual car.
- 27:20That set the production car record at 277 miles an hour.
- 27:25No.
- 27:25He, all he knows is, was the one a burgundy rera Did that.
- 27:29All right.
- 27:29That's all he knows.
- 27:31Well, about how many burgundy RAs are there?
- 27:33Well, every rera that's sold is either in like gray, like that
- 27:39carbon fibery look or burgundy.
- 27:41Oh, but burgundy's a common color for regret for kerig.
- 27:45Seg Re, is it?
- 27:47Yeah.
- 27:48Good Lord.
- 27:50On that note, thank you for your time and thoughts, Ollie.
- 27:54Yeah, thank you for bringing me on here.
- 27:57Thank you.
- 27:57Drive through.
