Speaker 1: The Death of Ivan Ilyitch Balo Tolstoy, translated by Konstance Garnett,
• 0:05
Speaker 1: Chapter one. Inside the Great Building of the Law Courts,
• 0:10
Speaker 1: during the interval in the hearing of the Melvinsky case,
• 0:13
Speaker 1: the members of the Judicial Council and the public prosecutor
• 0:16
Speaker 1: were gathered together in the private room of Ivan Yegorovitch Schebek,
• 0:20
Speaker 1: and the conversation turned upon the celebrated Krassovsky case. Fyodor
• 0:25
Speaker 1: Vassilievitch hotly maintained that the case was not in the
• 0:28
Speaker 1: jurisdiction of the court. Yegor Ivanovitch stood up for his
• 0:32
Speaker 1: own view, but from the first Pyotr Ivanovitch, who had
• 0:36
Speaker 1: not entered into the discussion, took no interest in it,
• 0:39
Speaker 1: but was looking through the newspapers which had just been
• 0:41
Speaker 1: brought in. Gentlemen, he said, Ivan Ilyitch is dead. You
• 0:48
Speaker 1: don't say so. Here, read it, he said to Fyodor Vassilyevitch,
• 0:53
Speaker 1: handing him the fresh, still damp smelling paper. Within a
• 0:57
Speaker 1: black margin was printed Praskovye Kyodorovna Golovina with heartfelt affliction
• 1:02
Speaker 1: informs friends and relatives of the decease of her beloved husband.
• 1:06
Speaker 1: Member of the Court of Justice ivan Ilyitch Golovin, who
• 1:10
Speaker 1: passed away on the fourth of February. The funeral will
• 1:13
Speaker 1: take place on Thursday at one o'clock. Ivan Ilyitch was
• 1:18
Speaker 1: a colleague of the gentleman present, and all liked him.
• 1:21
Speaker 1: It was some weeks now since he had been taken ill.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: His illness had been said to be incurable. His post
• 1:28
Speaker 1: had been kept open for him, but it had been
• 1:30
Speaker 1: thought that in case of his death, Alexeev might receive
• 1:33
Speaker 1: his appointment, and either Vinikov or Stabel would succeed to Alexeyev's,
• 1:38
Speaker 1: so that on hearing of ivan Ilyitch's death, the first
• 1:41
Speaker 1: thought of each of the gentlemen in the room was
• 1:43
Speaker 1: of the effect this death might have on the transfer
• 1:46
Speaker 1: or promotion of themselves or their friends. Now I am
• 1:51
Speaker 1: sure of getting Stabel's place or Vinikov's, thought Fyodor Vassilievitch.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: It was promised me long ago, and a promotion means
• 1:58
Speaker 1: eight hundred roubles additional income, besides the grants for office expenses.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: Now I shall have to petition for my brother in
• 2:06
Speaker 1: law to be transferred from Koluga, thought Pyotr Ivanovitch. My
• 2:10
Speaker 1: wife will be very glad, she won't be able to
• 2:13
Speaker 1: say now that I've never done anything for her family.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: I thought somehow that he'd never get up from his
• 2:20
Speaker 1: bed again, Pyotr Ivanovitch said aloud. I'm sorry, but what
• 2:26
Speaker 1: was it exactly that was wrong with him? The doctors
• 2:29
Speaker 1: could not decide. That's to say they did decide, but differently.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: When I saw him last I thought he would get
• 2:36
Speaker 1: over it. Well. I positively haven't called there ever since
• 2:40
Speaker 1: the holidays. I've kept meaning to go. Had he any property,
• 2:46
Speaker 1: I think there's something very small of his wife's, but
• 2:50
Speaker 1: something quite trifling. Yes, one will have to go and call.
• 2:55
Speaker 1: They live such a terribly long way off, a long
• 2:59
Speaker 1: way from you. Everything's a long way from your place there.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: He can never forgive me for living on the other
• 3:06
Speaker 1: side of the river, said Pyotr Ivanovitch, smiling at Schebek,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: and they began to talk of the great distances between
• 3:13
Speaker 1: different parts of the town and went back into the court.
• 3:18
Speaker 1: Besides the reflections upon the changes and promotions in the
• 3:21
Speaker 1: service likely to ensue from this death, the very fact
• 3:24
Speaker 1: of the death of an intimate acquaintance excited in every
• 3:27
Speaker 1: one who heard of it, as such a fact always
• 3:29
Speaker 1: does a feeling of relief that it is he that
• 3:32
Speaker 1: is dead, and not I only think he is dead.
• 3:38
Speaker 1: But here am I all right? Each one thought or felt.
• 3:42
Speaker 1: The more intimate acquaintances, the so called friends of ivan
• 3:45
Speaker 1: Ilyitch could not help thinking too, that now they had
• 3:49
Speaker 1: the exceedingly tiresome social duties to perform of going to
• 3:52
Speaker 1: the funeral service and paying the widow a visit of condolence.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: The most intimately acquainted with their late colleague were few
• 4:00
Speaker 1: Vassilyevitch and Pyotr Ivanovitch. Pyotr Ivanovitch had been a comrade
• 4:05
Speaker 1: of his at the school of Jurisprudence, and considered himself
• 4:08
Speaker 1: under obligations to ivan Ilyitch. Telling his wife at dinner
• 4:13
Speaker 1: of the news of ivan Ilyitch's death and his reflections
• 4:16
Speaker 1: as to the possibility of getting her brother transferred into
• 4:19
Speaker 1: their circuit. Peotr Ivanovitch, without lying down for his usual nap,
• 4:24
Speaker 1: put on his frock coat and drove to ivan Ilyitch's
• 4:28
Speaker 1: At the entrance before ivan Ilyitch's flat stood a carriage
• 4:31
Speaker 1: and two hired flies. Downstairs in the entry, near the
• 4:35
Speaker 1: hat stand, there was leaning against the wall a coffin
• 4:38
Speaker 1: lid with tassels and braiding freshly rubbed up with pipe clay.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: Two ladies were taking off their cloaks. One of them
• 4:45
Speaker 1: he knew, the sister of Ivan Ilyitch. The other was
• 4:49
Speaker 1: a lady he did not know. Pyotr Ivanovitch's colleague Schwartz,
• 4:53
Speaker 1: was coming down and from the top stair, seeing who
• 4:56
Speaker 1: it was coming in, he stopped and winked at him,
• 4:59
Speaker 1: as though to say, ivan Ilyitch has made a mess
• 5:03
Speaker 1: of it is a very different matter with you and me.
• 5:07
Speaker 1: Schwartz's face, with his English whiskers and all his thin
• 5:10
Speaker 1: figure in his frock coat had, as it always had,
• 5:13
Speaker 1: an air of elegant solemnity. And this solemnity, always such
• 5:18
Speaker 1: a contrast to Schwartz's playful character, had a special piquancy here,
• 5:23
Speaker 1: so thought Pyotr Ivanovitch. Pyotr Ivanovitch let the ladies pass
• 5:28
Speaker 1: on in front of him and walked slowly up the
• 5:31
Speaker 1: stairs after them. Schwartz had not come down, but was
• 5:35
Speaker 1: waiting at the top. Pyotr Ivanovitch knew what for he wanted, obviously,
• 5:40
Speaker 1: to settle with him where their game of screw was
• 5:43
Speaker 1: to be. That evening, the ladies went up to the
• 5:46
Speaker 1: widow's room while schwartz, with his lips tightly and gravely shut,
• 5:50
Speaker 1: and amusement in his eyes. With a twitch of his eyebrows,
• 5:53
Speaker 1: motioned Pyotr Ivanovitch to the right to the room where
• 5:56
Speaker 1: the dead man was. Pyotr iv Ivanovitch went in, as
• 6:01
Speaker 1: people always do on such occasions, in uncertainty as to
• 6:05
Speaker 1: what he would have to do there. One thing he
• 6:08
Speaker 1: felt sure of that crossing oneself never comes amiss on
• 6:12
Speaker 1: such occasions. As to whether it was necessary to bow
• 6:16
Speaker 1: down while doing so, he did not feel quite sure,
• 6:19
Speaker 1: and so chose a middle course. On entering the room,
• 6:22
Speaker 1: he began crossing himself and made a slight sort of bow,
• 6:27
Speaker 1: so far as the movements of his hands and head
• 6:29
Speaker 1: permitted him. He glanced while doing so about the room.
• 6:33
Speaker 1: Two young men, one a high school boy, nephews probably
• 6:37
Speaker 1: were going out of the room crossing themselves. An old
• 6:40
Speaker 1: lady was standing motionless, and a lady with her eyebrows
• 6:44
Speaker 1: queerly lifted, was saying something to her in a whisper.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: A deacon in a frock coat, resolute and hearty, was
• 6:52
Speaker 1: reading something aloud with an expression that precluded all possibility
• 6:55
Speaker 1: of contradiction. A young peasant who used to wait at
• 6:59
Speaker 1: table gerasim walking with light footsteps in front of Pyotr
• 7:03
Speaker 1: Ivanovitch was sprinkling something on the floor. Seeing this, Pyotr
• 7:08
Speaker 1: Ivanovitch was at once aware of the faint odor of
• 7:11
Speaker 1: the decomposing corpse. On his last visit to ivan Ilyitch,
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch had seen this peasant in his room. He
• 7:18
Speaker 1: was performing the duties of a sick nurse, and ivan
• 7:21
Speaker 1: Ilyitch liked him particularly. Pyotr Ivanovitch continued crossing himself and
• 7:26
Speaker 1: bowing in a direction intermediate between the coffin, the deacon,
• 7:30
Speaker 1: and the holy pictures on the table in the corner. Then,
• 7:34
Speaker 1: when this action of making the sign of the cross
• 7:37
Speaker 1: with his hand seemed to him to have been unduly prolonged,
• 7:40
Speaker 1: he stood still and began to scrutinize the dead man.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: The dead man lay as dead men always do, lie
• 7:49
Speaker 1: in a peculiarly heavy dead way, his stiffened limbs sunk
• 7:53
Speaker 1: in the cushions of the coffin, and his head bent
• 7:55
Speaker 1: back forever on the pillow and thrust up as dead
• 7:59
Speaker 1: men always do. His yellow waxen forehead with bald spots
• 8:03
Speaker 1: on the sunken temples, and his nose that stood out
• 8:06
Speaker 1: sharply and as it were squeezed on the upper lip.
• 8:10
Speaker 1: He was much changed, even thinner since Pyotr Ivanovitch had
• 8:13
Speaker 1: seen him. But his face, as always with the dead,
• 8:17
Speaker 1: was more handsome and above all more impressive than it
• 8:20
Speaker 1: had been when he was alive. On the face was
• 8:24
Speaker 1: an expression of what had to be done, having been
• 8:27
Speaker 1: done and rightly done. Besides this, there was too in
• 8:31
Speaker 1: that expression a reproach or a reminder for the living.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: This reminder seemed to Pyotr Ivanovitch uncalled for, or at
• 8:39
Speaker 1: least to have nothing to do with him. He felt
• 8:43
Speaker 1: something unpleasant, and so Pyotr Ivanovitch once more crossed himself hurriedly,
• 8:49
Speaker 1: and as it struck him too hurriedly, not quite in
• 8:52
Speaker 1: accordance with the proprieties, turned and went to the door.
• 8:57
Speaker 1: Schwartz was waiting for him in the adjoining room, standing
• 9:00
Speaker 1: with his legs apart and both hands behind his back,
• 9:02
Speaker 1: playing with his top hat. A single glance at the playful,
• 9:06
Speaker 1: sleek and elegant figure of Schwartz revived Pyotr Ivanovitch. He
• 9:11
Speaker 1: felt that he Swartz was above it and would not
• 9:15
Speaker 1: give way to depressing impressions. The mere sight of him
• 9:19
Speaker 1: said plainly, the incident of the service over the body
• 9:22
Speaker 1: of ivan Ilyitch cannot possibly constitute a sufficient ground for
• 9:26
Speaker 1: recognizing the business of the session suspended. In other words,
• 9:30
Speaker 1: in no way can it hinder us from shuffling and
• 9:33
Speaker 1: cutting a pack of cards this evening, while the footman
• 9:35
Speaker 1: sets four unsanctified candles on the table for us. In fact,
• 9:40
Speaker 1: there is no ground for supposing that this incident could
• 9:43
Speaker 1: prevent us from spending the evening agreeably. He said as much,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: indeed to Pyotr Ivanovitch as he came out, proposing that
• 9:51
Speaker 1: the party should meet at Fyodor Vassilievitch's. But apparently it
• 9:55
Speaker 1: was Pyotr Ivanovitch's destiny not to play screw that evening.
• 10:00
Speaker 1: Praskovya Fyodorovna, a short, fat woman, who, in spite of
• 10:04
Speaker 1: all efforts in a contrary direction, was steadily broader from
• 10:08
Speaker 1: her shoulders downwards, all in black, with lace on her
• 10:12
Speaker 1: head and her eyebrows as queerly arched as the lady
• 10:15
Speaker 1: standing beside the coffin, came out of her own apartments
• 10:18
Speaker 1: with some other ladies and conducting them to the dead
• 10:21
Speaker 1: man's room, said the service will take place immediately. Come in. Schwartz,
• 10:28
Speaker 1: making an indefinite bow, stood still, obviously neither accepting nor
• 10:33
Speaker 1: declining this invitation. Praskovya Fyodorovna, recognizing Pyotry Ivanovitch, sighed, went
• 10:40
Speaker 1: right up to him, took his hand and said, I
• 10:44
Speaker 1: know that you are a true friend of Yvan Ilyitch's,
• 10:47
Speaker 1: and looked at him, expecting from him the suitable action.
• 10:50
Speaker 1: In response to these words, Pyotr Ivanovitch knew that, just
• 10:55
Speaker 1: as before, he had to cross himself. Now what he
• 10:58
Speaker 1: had to do was to press her hand, to sigh
• 11:01
Speaker 1: and to say, ah, I was indeed, And he did so,
• 11:08
Speaker 1: And as he did so, he felt that the desired
• 11:10
Speaker 1: result had been attained, that he was touched and she
• 11:14
Speaker 1: was touched. Come, since it's not begun yet, I have
• 11:19
Speaker 1: something I want to say to you, said the widow.
• 11:22
Speaker 1: Give me your arm. Pyotr Ivanovitch gave her his arm,
• 11:26
Speaker 1: and they moved towards the inner rooms, passing Schwartz, who
• 11:30
Speaker 1: winked gloomily at Pyotr Ivanovitch. So much for our screw.
• 11:35
Speaker 1: Don't complain. If we find another partner, you can make
• 11:38
Speaker 1: a fifth. When you do get away, said his humorous glance.
• 11:44
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch sighed still more deeply and despondently, and Praskovya
• 11:48
Speaker 1: Fyodorovna pressed his hand gratefully. Going into her drawing room
• 11:53
Speaker 1: that was upholstered with pink kreton and lighted by a
• 11:56
Speaker 1: dismal looking lamp, they sat down at the table, she
• 11:59
Speaker 1: on the sofa, and Pyotr Ivanovitch on a low ottoman
• 12:03
Speaker 1: with deranged springs, which yielded spasmodically under his weight. Kraskovya
• 12:08
Speaker 1: Fyodorovna was about to warn him to sit on another seat,
• 12:12
Speaker 1: but felt such a recommendation out of keeping with her
• 12:15
Speaker 1: position and changed her mind. Sitting down on the ottoman,
• 12:19
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch remembered how ivan Ilyitch had arranged this drawing
• 12:23
Speaker 1: room and had consulted him about this very pink kretan
• 12:27
Speaker 1: with green leaves. Seating herself on the sofa and pushing
• 12:31
Speaker 1: by the table. The whole drawing room was crowded with
• 12:34
Speaker 1: furniture and things. The widow caught the lace of her
• 12:37
Speaker 1: black fichu in the carving of the table. Pyotr Ivanovitch
• 12:41
Speaker 1: got up to disentangle it for her and the ottoman,
• 12:44
Speaker 1: freed from his weight, began bobbing up spasmodically under him.
• 12:50
Speaker 1: The widow began unhooking her lace herself, and Pyotr Ivanovitch
• 12:53
Speaker 1: again sat down, suppressing the mutinous Ottoman springs under him.
• 12:58
Speaker 1: But the widow could not quite free herself, and Pyotr
• 13:01
Speaker 1: Ivanovitch rose again and again. The ottoman became mutinous and
• 13:05
Speaker 1: popped up with a positive snap. When this was all over,
• 13:10
Speaker 1: she took out a clean cambric handkerchief and began weeping.
• 13:13
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch had been chilled off by the incident with
• 13:16
Speaker 1: the lace and the struggle with the Ottoman springs, and
• 13:19
Speaker 1: he sat looking sullen. This awkward position was cut short
• 13:24
Speaker 1: by the entrance of Sokolov ivan Ilyitch's butler, who came
• 13:27
Speaker 1: in to announce that the place in the cemetery fixed
• 13:30
Speaker 1: on by Praskovya Fyodorovna would cost two hundred roubles. She
• 13:35
Speaker 1: left off weeping, and with the air of a victim,
• 13:37
Speaker 1: glancing at Pyotr Ivanovitch, said in French that it was
• 13:41
Speaker 1: very terrible for her. Pyotr Ivanovitch made a silent gesture
• 13:45
Speaker 1: signifying his unhesitating conviction that it must indeed be so.
• 13:51
Speaker 1: Please smoke, she said, in a magnanimous and at the
• 13:55
Speaker 1: same time crushed voice, and she began discussing with Sokolov
• 13:59
Speaker 1: the question of the price of the site for the grave.
• 14:03
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch, lighting a cigarette, listened to her very circumstantial
• 14:07
Speaker 1: inquiries as to the various prices of sights and her
• 14:10
Speaker 1: decision as to the one to be selected. Having settled
• 14:14
Speaker 1: on the site for the grave, she made arrangements also
• 14:17
Speaker 1: about the choristers. Sokolov went away. I see to everything myself,
• 14:24
Speaker 1: she said to Pyotr Ivanovitch, moving on one side the
• 14:27
Speaker 1: albums that lay on the table, and noticing that the
• 14:30
Speaker 1: table was in danger from the cigarette ash, she promptly
• 14:33
Speaker 1: passed an ash tray to Pyotr Ivanovitch and said, I
• 14:37
Speaker 1: consider it an affectation to pretend that my grief prevents
• 14:41
Speaker 1: me from looking after practical matters. On the contrary, if
• 14:45
Speaker 1: anything could not console me but distract me, it is
• 14:49
Speaker 1: seeing after everything. For him. She took out her handkerchief
• 14:53
Speaker 1: again as though preparing to weep again, and suddenly, as
• 14:56
Speaker 1: though struggling with herself, she shook herself and began so,
• 15:00
Speaker 1: speaking calmly. But I've business to talk about with you.
• 15:05
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch bowed carefully, keeping in check the springs of
• 15:08
Speaker 1: the Ottoman, which had at once begun quivering under him.
• 15:13
Speaker 1: The last few days, his sufferings were awful. Did he
• 15:17
Speaker 1: suffer very much, asked Pyotr Ivanovitch. Oh, awfully for the
• 15:23
Speaker 1: last moments hours. Indeed, he never left off screaming. For
• 15:28
Speaker 1: three days and nights in succession, he screamed incessantly. It
• 15:32
Speaker 1: was insufferable. I can't understand how I bore it. One
• 15:36
Speaker 1: could hear it through three closed doors. Ah, what I suffered?
• 15:42
Speaker 1: And was he really conscious? Asked Pyotr Ivanovitch. Yes, she
• 15:48
Speaker 1: whispered up to the last minute. He said good bye
• 15:52
Speaker 1: to us a quarter of an hour before his death
• 15:54
Speaker 1: and asked Volodya to be taken away too. The thought
• 15:59
Speaker 1: of the so sufferings of a man he had known
• 16:01
Speaker 1: so intimately, at first as a light hearted boy, a schoolboy,
• 16:05
Speaker 1: then grown up as a partner at whist in spite
• 16:08
Speaker 1: of the unpleasant consciousness of his own and this woman's hypocrisy,
• 16:13
Speaker 1: suddenly horrified Pyotr Ivanovitch. He saw again that forehead, the
• 16:18
Speaker 1: nose that seemed squeezing, the lip, and he felt frightened
• 16:21
Speaker 1: for himself. Three days and nights of awful suffering and death.
• 16:27
Speaker 1: Why that may at once any minute come upon me too,
• 16:31
Speaker 1: he thought, And he felt for an instant terrified. But
• 16:35
Speaker 1: immediately he could not himself have said how. There came
• 16:39
Speaker 1: to his support the customary reflection that this had happened
• 16:42
Speaker 1: to ivan Ilyitch and not to him, and that to
• 16:45
Speaker 1: him this must not and could not happen. That in
• 16:48
Speaker 1: thinking thus he was giving way to depression, which was
• 16:51
Speaker 1: not the right thing to do, as was evident from
• 16:53
Speaker 1: Schwartz's expression of face. And making these reflections, Pyotr Ivanovitch
• 16:59
Speaker 1: felt reassured and began with interest inquiring details about ivan
• 17:03
Speaker 1: Ilyitch's end, as though death were a mischance, peculiar to
• 17:07
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch but not at all incidental to himself. After
• 17:12
Speaker 1: various observations about the details of the truly awful physical
• 17:16
Speaker 1: sufferings endured by ivan Ilyitch, these details, Pyotr Ivanovitch learned
• 17:20
Speaker 1: only through the effect ivan Ilyitch's agonies had had on
• 17:23
Speaker 1: the nerves of Praskovya Fyodorovna, the widow. Apparently thought it
• 17:27
Speaker 1: time to get to business. Ah, Pyotr Ivanovitch, how hard
• 17:33
Speaker 1: it is, how awfully, awfully hard, And she began to cry. Again.
• 17:40
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch sighed and waited for her to blow her nose.
• 17:44
Speaker 1: When she had done so, he said, indeed it is.
• 17:48
Speaker 1: And again she began to talk and brought out what
• 17:51
Speaker 1: was evidently the business she wished to discuss with him.
• 17:54
Speaker 1: That business consisted in the inquiry as to how, on
• 17:57
Speaker 1: the occasion of her husband's death she was to obtain
• 18:00
Speaker 1: a grant from the government. She made a show of
• 18:04
Speaker 1: asking Pyotr Ivanovitch's advice about a pension, But he perceived
• 18:08
Speaker 1: that she knew already to the minutest details what he
• 18:11
Speaker 1: did not know himself, indeed, everything that could be got
• 18:14
Speaker 1: out of the government on the ground of this death,
• 18:17
Speaker 1: But that what she wanted to find out was whether
• 18:19
Speaker 1: there were not any means of obtaining a little more.
• 18:23
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch tried to imagine such means, but after pondering
• 18:27
Speaker 1: a little, and out of politeness, abusing the government for
• 18:30
Speaker 1: its stinginess, he said that he believed that it was
• 18:33
Speaker 1: impossible to obtain more. Then she sighed and began unmistakably
• 18:38
Speaker 1: looking about for an excuse for getting rid of her visitor.
• 18:42
Speaker 1: He perceived this, put out his cigarette, got up, pressed
• 18:45
Speaker 1: her hand and went out into the passage in the
• 18:50
Speaker 1: dining room, where was the bric a bract clock that
• 18:52
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch had been so delighted at buying. Pyotr Ivanovitch
• 18:56
Speaker 1: met the priest and several people he knew who had
• 18:58
Speaker 1: come to the service for the dead, and saw too
• 19:01
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch's daughter, a handsome young lady. She was all
• 19:05
Speaker 1: in black. Her very slender figure looked even slenderer than usual.
• 19:10
Speaker 1: She had a gloomy, determined, almost wrathful expression. She bowed
• 19:15
Speaker 1: to Pyotr Ivanovitch as though he were to blame in
• 19:18
Speaker 1: some way. Behind the daughter, with the same offended air
• 19:22
Speaker 1: on his face, stood a rich young man, whom Pyotr
• 19:25
Speaker 1: Ivanovitch knew too, and examining magistrate the young lady's fiancee
• 19:30
Speaker 1: as he had heard. He bowed dejectedly to him and
• 19:33
Speaker 1: would have gone on into the dead man's room, when
• 19:36
Speaker 1: from the staircase there appeared the figure of the son,
• 19:39
Speaker 1: the high school boy. Extraordinarily like ivan Ilyitch, he was
• 19:44
Speaker 1: the little ivan Ilyitch over again as Pyotr Ivanovitch remembered
• 19:48
Speaker 1: him at school. His eyes were red with crying and
• 19:51
Speaker 1: had that look often seen in unclean boys of thirteen
• 19:55
Speaker 1: or fourteen. The boy, seeing Pyotr Ivanovitch, scowled morose and bashfully.
• 20:02
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch nodded to him and went into the dead
• 20:05
Speaker 1: man's room. The service for the dead began, candles, groans, incense, tears, sobs.
• 20:14
Speaker 1: Pyotr Ivanovitch stood frowning, staring at his feet in front
• 20:17
Speaker 1: of him. He did not once glance at the dead man,
• 20:21
Speaker 1: and right through to the end, did not once give
• 20:23
Speaker 1: way to depressing influences, and was one of the first
• 20:26
Speaker 1: to walk out. In the hall, there was no one. Garossim,
• 20:32
Speaker 1: the young peasant, darted out of the dead man's room,
• 20:34
Speaker 1: tossed over with his strong hand all the fur cloaks
• 20:37
Speaker 1: to find Pyotr Ivanovitch's and gave it him. Well, Garassim,
• 20:43
Speaker 1: my boy, said Pyotr Ivanovitch, so as to say something.
• 20:47
  Speaker 1: A sad business, isn't it. It's God's will. We shall
• 20:52
Speaker 1: come to the same, said Garassim, showing his white, even
• 20:56
Speaker 1: peasant teeth in a smile and like a man. In
• 20:59
Speaker 1: a rush of ex work. He briskly opened the door,
• 21:02
Speaker 1: called up the coachman, saw Pyotr Ivanovitch into the carriage,
• 21:06
Speaker 1: and darted back to the steps, as though bethinking himself
• 21:08
Speaker 1: of what he had to do next. Pyotr Ivanovitch had
• 21:13
Speaker 1: a special pleasure in the fresh air, after the smell
• 21:16
Speaker 1: of incense, of the corpse and of carbolic acid. Where
• 21:21
Speaker 1: to asked the coachman. It's not too late. I'll still
• 21:26
Speaker 1: go round to Fyodor Vassilyevitch's and Pyotr Ivanovitch drove there,
• 21:31
Speaker 1: and he did, in fact find them just finishing the
• 21:34
Speaker 1: first rubber, so that he came just at the right
• 21:36
Speaker 1: time to take a hand. End of chapter one. The
• 21:41
Speaker 1: previous history of ivan Ilyitch was the simplest, the most ordinary,
• 21:45
Speaker 1: and the most awful. Ivan Ilyitch died at the age
• 21:49
Speaker 1: of forty five, a member of the Judicial Council. He
• 21:53
Speaker 1: was the son of an official whose career in Petersburg,
• 21:56
Speaker 1: through various ministries and departments, had been such as leeds
• 21:59
Speaker 1: pep into that position in which, though it is distinctly
• 22:02
Speaker 1: obvious that they are unfit to perform any kind of
• 22:05
Speaker 1: real duty, they yet cannot owing to their long past service,
• 22:09
Speaker 1: and their official rank be dismissed, and they therefore receive
• 22:13
Speaker 1: a specially created fictitious post and by no means fictitious
• 22:17
Speaker 1: thousands from six to ten, on which they go on
• 22:20
Speaker 1: living till extreme old age. Such was the Privy councilor
• 22:25
Speaker 1: the superfluous member of various superfluous institutions Ilyya Ifimovitch Golovin.
• 22:31
Speaker 1: He had three sons. Ivan Ilyitch was the second son.
• 22:35
Speaker 1: The eldest son's career was exactly like his father's, only
• 22:39
Speaker 1: in a different department, and he was by now close
• 22:42
Speaker 1: upon that stage in the service in which the same
• 22:44
Speaker 1: sinecure would be reached. The third son was the unsuccessful one.
• 22:49
Speaker 1: He had in various positions, always made a mess of things,
• 22:53
Speaker 1: and was now employed in the railway department. And his
• 22:56
Speaker 1: father and his brothers, and still more their wives did
• 22:59
Speaker 1: not merely dislike meeting him, but avoided, except in extreme necessity,
• 23:04
Speaker 1: recollecting his existence. His sister had married Baron Greff, a
• 23:09
Speaker 1: Petersburg official of the same stamp as his father in law.
• 23:13
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch was le Phoenix de la femil. As people said,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: he was not so frigid and precise as the eldest son,
• 23:21
Speaker 1: nor so wild as the youngest. He was the happy
• 23:24
Speaker 1: mien between them, a shrewd, lively, pleasant and well bred man.
• 23:29
Speaker 1: He had been educated with his younger brother at the
• 23:32
Speaker 1: School of Jurisprudence. The younger brother had not finished the
• 23:36
Speaker 1: school course, but was expelled when in the fifth class,
• 23:39
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyyitch completed the course successfully. At school, he was
• 23:43
Speaker 1: just the same as he was later on all his life,
• 23:46
Speaker 1: an intelligent fellow, highly good humored and sociable, but strict
• 23:50
Speaker 1: in doing what he considered to be his duty. His
• 23:54
Speaker 1: duty he considered whatever was so considered by those persons
• 23:57
Speaker 1: who were set in authority over him. He was not
• 24:01
Speaker 1: a toady as a boy, nor later on as a
• 24:03
Speaker 1: grown up person. But from his earliest years he was
• 24:06
Speaker 1: attracted as a fly to the light to persons of
• 24:09
Speaker 1: good standing in the world, assimilated their manners and their
• 24:13
Speaker 1: views of life, and established friendly relations with them. All
• 24:18
Speaker 1: the enthusiasms of childhood and youth past leaving no great
• 24:21
Speaker 1: traces in him. He gave way to sensuality and to vanity, and, latterly,
• 24:26
Speaker 1: when in the higher classes at school, to liberalism, but
• 24:30
Speaker 1: always keeping within certain limits which were unfailingly marked out
• 24:33
Speaker 1: for him by his instincts. At school, he had committed
• 24:37
Speaker 1: actions which had struck him beforehand as great of vileness
• 24:41
Speaker 1: and gave him a feeling of loathing for himself at
• 24:43
Speaker 1: the very time he was committing them. But later on,
• 24:47
Speaker 1: perceiving that such actions were committed also by men of
• 24:50
Speaker 1: good position and were not regarded by them as base,
• 24:53
Speaker 1: he was able not to regard them as good, but
• 24:56
Speaker 1: to forget about them completely, and was never mortified by
• 25:00
Speaker 1: recollections of them. Leaving the School of Jurisprudence in the
• 25:04
Speaker 1: tenth class, and receiving from his father a sum of
• 25:07
Speaker 1: money for his outfit, Ivan Ilyitch ordered his clothes at Charmers,
• 25:11
Speaker 1: hung on his watch chain a medallion inscribed respeeche phenem,
• 25:15
Speaker 1: said good bye to the Prince who was the principal
• 25:17
Speaker 1: of his school, had a farewell dinner with his comrades
• 25:21
Speaker 1: at Donnan's, and with all his new fashionable belongings, traveling trunk, linen,
• 25:26
Speaker 1: suits of clothes, shaving and toilet appurtenances, and traveling rug,
• 25:30
Speaker 1: all ordered and purchased at the very best shops, set
• 25:34
Speaker 1: off to take the post of Secretary on special commissions
• 25:37
Speaker 1: for the governor of a province, a post which had
• 25:39
Speaker 1: been obtained for him by his father in the province
• 25:44
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch, without loss of time, made himself a position
• 25:47
Speaker 1: as easy and agreeable as his position had been in
• 25:50
Speaker 1: the school of jurisprudence. He did his work, made his career,
• 25:55
Speaker 1: and at the same time led a life of well
• 25:57
Speaker 1: bred social gaiety. Occasionally he visited various districts on official duty,
• 26:03
Speaker 1: behaved with dignity both with his superiors and his inferiors,
• 26:07
Speaker 1: and with exactitude and an incorruptible honesty of which he
• 26:10
Speaker 1: could not help feeling proud, performed the duties with which
• 26:13
Speaker 1: he was entrusted, principally having to do with the dissenters.
• 26:18
Speaker 1: When engaged in official work, he was, in spite of
• 26:21
Speaker 1: his youth and taste for frivolous amusements, exceedingly reserved official
• 26:26
Speaker 1: and even severe. But in social life he was often
• 26:30
Speaker 1: amusing and witty, and always good natured, well bred and
• 26:33
Speaker 1: bonn infant, as was said of him by his chief
• 26:36
Speaker 1: and his chief's wife, with whom he was like one
• 26:39
Speaker 1: of the family. In the province. There was too a
• 26:43
Speaker 1: connection with one of the ladies who obtruded their charms
• 26:46
Speaker 1: on the stylish young lawyer. There was a dressmaker too,
• 26:50
Speaker 1: and there were drinking bows with smart officers, visiting the
• 26:53
Speaker 1: neighborhood and visits to a certain outlying street after supper.
• 26:57
Speaker 1: There was a rather cringing obsequiousness in his behavior too,
• 27:01
Speaker 1: with his chief and even his chief's wife. But all
• 27:05
Speaker 1: this was accompanied with such a tone of the highest
• 27:07
Speaker 1: breeding that it could not be called by harsh names.
• 27:10
Speaker 1: It all came under the rubric of the French, saying
• 27:13
Speaker 1: ilfo kyla jenness pass. Everything was done with clean hands,
• 27:18
Speaker 1: in clean shirts, with French phrases and what was of
• 27:21
Speaker 1: most importance in the highest society, and consequently with the
• 27:25
Speaker 1: approval of people of rank. Such was ivan Ilyitch's career
• 27:30
Speaker 1: for five years. And then came a change in his
• 27:32
Speaker 1: official life. New methods of judicial procedure were established, New
• 27:37
Speaker 1: men were wanted to carry them out, and ivan Ilyitch
• 27:41
Speaker 1: became such a new man. Ivan Ilyitch was offered the
• 27:45
Speaker 1: post of examining magistrate, and he accepted it in spite
• 27:48
Speaker 1: of the fact that this post was in another province
• 27:51
Speaker 1: and he would have to break off all the ties
• 27:53
Speaker 1: he had formed and form new ones. Ivan Ilyitch's friends
• 27:57
Speaker 1: met together to see him off, had their photographs taken
• 28:00
Speaker 1: in a group, presented him with a silver cigarette case,
• 28:03
Speaker 1: and he set off to his new post as an
• 28:07
Speaker 1: examining magistrate. Ivan Ilyitch was as comb ill foe, as
• 28:11
Speaker 1: well bred, as adroit in keeping official duties apart from
• 28:15
Speaker 1: private life, and as successful in gaining universal respect as
• 28:19
Speaker 1: he had been as Secretary of private Commissions. The duties
• 28:23
Speaker 1: of his new office were in themselves of far greater
• 28:26
Speaker 1: interest and attractiveness for ivan Ilyitch. In his former post,
• 28:31
Speaker 1: it had been pleasant to pass in his smart uniform
• 28:33
Speaker 1: from Charmers through the crowd of petitioners and officials waiting
• 28:37
Speaker 1: timorously and envying him, and to march with his easy
• 28:41
Speaker 1: swagger straight into the governor's private room, there to sit
• 28:44
Speaker 1: down with them to tea and cigarettes. But the persons
• 28:47
Speaker 1: directly subject to his authority were few. The only such
• 28:51
Speaker 1: persons were the district police superintendents and the dissenters when
• 28:54
Speaker 1: he was serving on special commissions. And he liked treating
• 28:58
Speaker 1: such persons affably on the like comrades, liked to make
• 29:02
Speaker 1: them feel but he able to annihilate them. Was behaving
• 29:05
Speaker 1: in this simple, friendly way with them. But such people
• 29:09
Speaker 1: were then few in number. Now as in examining magistrate,
• 29:13
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch felt that every one, every one, without exception,
• 29:17
Speaker 1: the most dignified, the most self satisfied people, all were
• 29:21
Speaker 1: in his hands, and that he had but to write
• 29:24
Speaker 1: certain words on a sheet of paper with a printed heading,
• 29:27
Speaker 1: and this dignified, self satisfied person would be brought before
• 29:31
Speaker 1: him in the capacity of a defendant or a witness,
• 29:34
Speaker 1: and if he did not care to make him sit down,
• 29:36
Speaker 1: he would have to stand up before him and answer
• 29:39
Speaker 1: his questions. Ivan Ilyitch never abused this authority of his.
• 29:44
Speaker 1: On the contrary, he tried to soften the expression of it.
• 29:47
Speaker 1: But the consciousness of this power, and the possibility of
• 29:50
Speaker 1: softening its effect, constituted for him the chief interest and
• 29:54
Speaker 1: attractiveness of his new position in the work itself. In
• 29:58
Speaker 1: the preliminary inquiries, ivan Ilyitch very rapidly acquired the art
• 30:03
Speaker 1: of setting aside every consideration irrelevant to the official aspect
• 30:07
Speaker 1: of the case, and of reducing every case, however complex,
• 30:11
Speaker 1: to that form in which it could, in a purely
• 30:14
Speaker 1: external fashion, be put on paper, completely excluding his personal
• 30:18
Speaker 1: view of the matter. And what was of paramount importance
• 30:21
Speaker 1: observing all the necessary formalities. All this work was new,
• 30:26
Speaker 1: and he was one of the first men who put
• 30:28
Speaker 1: into practical working the reforms in judicial procedure enacted in
• 30:32
Speaker 1: eighteen sixty four. While settling in a new town in
• 30:36
Speaker 1: his position as examining magistrate, Ivon Ilyitch made new acquaintances,
• 30:41
Speaker 1: formed new ties, took up a new line, and adopted
• 30:44
Speaker 1: a rather different attitude. He took up an attitude of
• 30:48
Speaker 1: somewhat dignified aloofness towards the provincial authorities, while he picked
• 30:52
Speaker 1: out the best circle among the legal gentlemen and wealthy
• 30:55
Speaker 1: gentry living in the town, and adopted a tone of
• 30:57
Speaker 1: slight dissatisfaction with the government, moderate liberalism and lofty civic virtue.
• 31:04
Speaker 1: With this, while making no change in the elegance of
• 31:07
Speaker 1: his get up, ivan Ilyitch, in his new office gave
• 31:10
Speaker 1: up shaving and left his beard free to grow as
• 31:13
Speaker 1: it liked. Ivan Ilyitch's existence in the new town proved
• 31:17
Speaker 1: to be very agreeable. The society, which took the line
• 31:20
Speaker 1: of opposition to the governor was friendly and good. His
• 31:23
Speaker 1: income was larger, and he found a source of increased
• 31:26
Speaker 1: enjoyment in whist at which he began to play at
• 31:29
Speaker 1: this time, and having a faculty for playing cards good
• 31:32
Speaker 1: humoredly and being rapid and exact in his calculations, he
• 31:36
Speaker 1: was as a rule on the winning side. After living
• 31:40
Speaker 1: two years in the new town, ivan Ilyitch met his
• 31:43
Speaker 1: future wife, Praskavya Fyodorovna miheil was the most attractive, clever
• 31:48
Speaker 1: and brilliant girl in the set in which ivan Ilyitch moved,
• 31:52
Speaker 1: among other amusements and recreations. After his labors as a magistrate,
• 31:56
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch started a light, playful flirtation with prescot Vya Fyodorovna.
• 32:02
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch, when he was an assistant secretary had danced
• 32:05
Speaker 1: as a rule. As an examining magistrate, he danced only
• 32:09
Speaker 1: as an exception. He danced now as it were under protest,
• 32:13
Speaker 1: as though to show that though I am serving on
• 32:15
Speaker 1: the new reformed legal code and am of the fifth
• 32:18
Speaker 1: class in official rank, still if it comes to a
• 32:21
Speaker 1: question of dancing and that line too, I can do
• 32:24
Speaker 1: better than others. In this spirit, he danced now and
• 32:28
Speaker 1: then toward the end of the evening with Praskovyafyorovna, and
• 32:31
Speaker 1: it was principally during these dances that he won the
• 32:34
Speaker 1: heart of Praskovya Fyodorovna. She fell in love with him.
• 32:39
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch had no clearly defined intention of marrying, but
• 32:42
Speaker 1: when the girl fell in love with him, he put
• 32:44
Speaker 1: the question to himself. After all, why not get married,
• 32:48
Speaker 1: he said to himself. The young lady, Praskovya Fyodorovna was
• 32:53
Speaker 1: of good family, nice looking, There was a little bit
• 32:56
Speaker 1: of property. Ivan Ilyitch might have reckoned on a more
• 32:59
Speaker 1: brilliant match, but this was a good match. Ivan Ilyitch
• 33:03
Speaker 1: had his salary, she he hoped, would have as much
• 33:06
Speaker 1: of her own. It was a good family. She was
• 33:09
Speaker 1: a sweet, pretty and perfectly kamil faue young woman. To
• 33:13
Speaker 1: say that ivan Ilyitch got married because he fell in
• 33:16
Speaker 1: love with his wife and found her in sympathy with
• 33:18
Speaker 1: his views of life would be as untrue as to
• 33:21
Speaker 1: say that he got married because the people of his
• 33:24
Speaker 1: world approved of the match. Ivan Ilyitch was influenced by
• 33:28
Speaker 1: both considerations. He was doing what was agreeable to himself
• 33:32
Speaker 1: in securing such a wife, and at the same time
• 33:34
Speaker 1: doing what persons of higher standing looked upon as the
• 33:37
Speaker 1: correct thing, and ivan Ilyitch got married. The process itself
• 33:44
Speaker 1: of getting married and the early period of married life,
• 33:46
Speaker 1: with the conjugal caresses, the new furniture, the new crockery,
• 33:50
Speaker 1: the new house linen. All up to the time of
• 33:53
Speaker 1: his wife's pregnancy went off very well, so that ivan
• 33:56
Speaker 1: Ilyitch had already begun to think that so far from
• 33:59
Speaker 1: marriage breaking up that kind of frivolous, agreeable, light hearted life,
• 34:04
Speaker 1: always decorous and always approved by society, which he regarded
• 34:07
Speaker 1: as the normal life, it would even increase its agreeableness.
• 34:12
Speaker 1: But at that point, in the early months of his
• 34:14
Speaker 1: wife's pregnancy, there came in a new element, unexpected, unpleasant, tiresome,
• 34:19
Speaker 1: and unseemly, which could never have been anticipated, and from
• 34:23
Speaker 1: which there was no escape. His wife, without any kind
• 34:27
Speaker 1: of reason, it seemed to ivan Ilyitch, the gaety de coeur,
• 34:31
Speaker 1: as he expressed it, began to disturb the agreeableness and
• 34:35
Speaker 1: decorum of their life. She began, without any sort of justification,
• 34:39
Speaker 1: to be jealous, exacting in her demands on his attention,
• 34:42
Speaker 1: squabbled over everything, and treated him to the coarsest and
• 34:46
Speaker 1: most unpleasant scenes. At first, ivan Ilyitch hoped to escape
• 34:51
Speaker 1: from the unpleasantness of this position by taking up the
• 34:54
Speaker 1: same frivolous and well bred line that had served him
• 34:56
Speaker 1: well on other occasions of difficulty to ignore his wife's
• 35:01
Speaker 1: ill humor, went on living lightheartedly and agreeably as before,
• 35:06
Speaker 1: invited friends to play cards, tried to get away himself
• 35:09
Speaker 1: to the club or to his friends. But his wife began,
• 35:12
Speaker 1: on one occasion with such energy, abusing him in such
• 35:16
Speaker 1: coarse language, and so obstinately persisted in her abuse of
• 35:20
Speaker 1: him every time he failed in carrying out her demands,
• 35:23
Speaker 1: obviously having made up her mind firmly to persist till
• 35:26
Speaker 1: he gave way that his stayed at home and was
• 35:29
Speaker 1: as dull as she was. That ivan Ilyitch took alarm.
• 35:34
Speaker 1: He perceived that matrimony, at least with his wife, was
• 35:37
Speaker 1: not invariably conducive to the pleasures and proprieties of life,
• 35:41
Speaker 1: but on the contrary, often destructive of them, and that
• 35:44
Speaker 1: it was therefore essential to erect some barrier to protect
• 35:47
Speaker 1: himself from these disturbances, and ivan Ilyitch began to look
• 35:51
Speaker 1: about for such means of protecting himself. His official duties
• 35:55
Speaker 1: were the only thing that impressed Praskovya Fyorovna, and ivon
• 35:59
Speaker 1: ili Yeitch began to use his official position and the
• 36:02
Speaker 1: duties arising from it in his struggle with his wife
• 36:05
Speaker 1: to fence off his own independent world apart with the
• 36:10
Speaker 1: birth of the baby, the attempts at nursing it, and
• 36:13
Speaker 1: the various unsuccessful experiments with foods, with the illnesses real
• 36:17
Speaker 1: and imaginary of the infant and its mother, in which
• 36:20
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch was expected to sympathize though he never had
• 36:23
Speaker 1: the slightest idea about them. The need for him to
• 36:26
Speaker 1: fence off a world apart for himself outside his family
• 36:29
Speaker 1: life became still more imperative. As his wife grew more
• 36:33
Speaker 1: irritable and exacting, so did ivan Ilyitch more and more
• 36:37
Speaker 1: transfer the center of gravity of his life to his
• 36:40
Speaker 1: official work. He became fonder and fonder of official life,
• 36:45
Speaker 1: and more ambitious than he had been. Very quickly, not
• 36:50
Speaker 1: more than a year after his wedding, ivan Ilyitch had
• 36:52
Speaker 1: become aware that conjugal life, though providing certain comforts, was
• 36:57
Speaker 1: in reality a very intricate and difficulty business, towards which
• 37:01
Speaker 1: one must if one is to do one's duty, that is,
• 37:04
Speaker 1: lead the decorous life approved by society, work out for
• 37:08
Speaker 1: oneself a definite line, just as in the government service.
• 37:13
Speaker 1: In such a line, Yvonne Ilyitch did work out for
• 37:16
Speaker 1: himself in his married life. He expected from his home
• 37:20
Speaker 1: life only those comforts of dinner at home, of housekeeper
• 37:23
Speaker 1: and bed which it could give him, and above all
• 37:26
Speaker 1: that perfect propriety in external observances required by public opinion.
• 37:31
Speaker 1: For the rest, he looked for a good humored pleasantness,
• 37:34
Speaker 1: and if he found it, he was very thankful. If
• 37:37
Speaker 1: he met with antagonism and querulousness, he promptly retreated into
• 37:41
Speaker 1: the separate world he had shut off for himself in
• 37:43
Speaker 1: his official life, and there he found solace. Yvon Ilyitch
• 37:49
Speaker 1: was prized as a good official, and three years later
• 37:51
Speaker 1: he was made assistant public prosecutor. The new duties of
• 37:55
Speaker 1: this position, their dignity, the possibility of bringing any one
• 37:59
Speaker 1: to trial and putting any one in prison, the publicity
• 38:02
Speaker 1: of the speeches, and the success ivan Ilyitch had in
• 38:05
Speaker 1: that part of his work. All this made his official
• 38:08
Speaker 1: work still more attractive to him. Children were born to him.
• 38:13
Speaker 1: His wife became steadily more querulous and ill tempered, but
• 38:17
Speaker 1: the line ivan Ilyitch had taken up for himself in
• 38:20
Speaker 1: home life put him almost out of reach of her grumbling.
• 38:24
Speaker 1: After seven years of service in the same town, ivan
• 38:27
Speaker 1: Ilyitch was transferred to another province with the post of
• 38:30
Speaker 1: public prosecutor. They moved. Money was short, and his wife
• 38:35
Speaker 1: did not like the place they had moved to. The
• 38:38
Speaker 1: salary was indeed a little higher than before, but their
• 38:41
Speaker 1: expenses were larger. Besides, a couple of children died, and
• 38:46
Speaker 1: home life consequently became even less agreeable for ivan Ilyitch.
• 38:51
Speaker 1: For every mischance that occurred in their new place of residence,
• 38:54
Speaker 1: Praskovya Fyorovna blamed her husband. The greater number of subjects
• 38:59
Speaker 1: of common conversation between husband and wife, especially the education
• 39:03
Speaker 1: of the children, led to questions which were associated with
• 39:06
Speaker 1: previous quarrels, and quarrels were ready to break out at
• 39:10
Speaker 1: every instant. There remained only those rare periods of being
• 39:14
Speaker 1: in love, which did indeed come upon them, but never
• 39:17
Speaker 1: lasted long. These were the islands at which they put
• 39:21
Speaker 1: in for a time, But they soon set off again
• 39:23
Speaker 1: upon the ocean of concealed hostility that was made manifest
• 39:27
Speaker 1: in their aloofness from one another. This aloofness might have
• 39:31
Speaker 1: distressed ivan Ilyitch if he had believed that this ought
• 39:34
Speaker 1: not to be so, but by now he regarded this
• 39:37
Speaker 1: position as perfectly normal. And it was indeed the goal
• 39:41
Speaker 1: toward which he worked in his home life. His aim
• 39:44
Speaker 1: was to make himself more and more free from the
• 39:46
Speaker 1: unpleasant aspects of domestic life, and to render them harmless
• 39:50
Speaker 1: and decorous. And he attained this aim by spending less
• 39:54
Speaker 1: and less time with his family, and when he was
• 39:57
Speaker 1: forced to be at home he endeavored to secure his
• 39:59
Speaker 1: t tranquility by the presence of outsiders. The great thing
• 40:04
Speaker 1: for ivan Ilyitch was having his office in the official world.
• 40:08
Speaker 1: All the interest of life was concentrated for him, and
• 40:11
Speaker 1: this interest absorbed him the sense of his own power,
• 40:15
Speaker 1: the consciousness of being able to ruin anyone he wanted
• 40:18
Speaker 1: to ruin, even the external dignity of his office when
• 40:21
Speaker 1: he made his entry into the court or met subordinate officials.
• 40:25
Speaker 1: His success in the eyes of his superiors and his subordinates,
• 40:28
Speaker 1: and above all his masterly handling of cases of which
• 40:32
Speaker 1: he was conscious. All this delighted him, and, together with
• 40:36
Speaker 1: chat with his colleagues, dining out and whist filled his life,
• 40:42
Speaker 1: so that on the whole ivan Ilyitch's life still went
• 40:45
Speaker 1: on in the way he thought it should go, agreeably
• 40:47
Speaker 1: and decorously. So he lived for another seven years his
• 40:53
Speaker 1: eldest daughter was already sixteen. Another child had died, and
• 40:57
Speaker 1: there was left only one other, a boy at the
• 40:59
Speaker 1: high school. A subject of dissension. Ivan Ilitch wanted to
• 41:04
Speaker 1: send him to the school of jurisprudence, while Praskovya Fyodorovna,
• 41:08
Speaker 1: to spite him, sent him to the high school. The
• 41:11
Speaker 1: daughter had been educated at home and had turned out well.
• 41:15
Speaker 1: The boy, too, did fairly well at his lessons end
• 41:19
Speaker 1: of chapter two. Such was ivan Ilyitch's life for seventeen
• 41:23
Speaker 1: years after his marriage. He had been by now a
• 41:26
Speaker 1: long while prosecutor and had refused several appointments offered him,
• 41:30
Speaker 1: looking out for a more desirable post, when there occurred
• 41:33
Speaker 1: an unexpected incident which utterly destroyed his peace of mind.
• 41:38
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch had been expecting to be appointed presiding judge
• 41:41
Speaker 1: in a university town, but a certain Gaupe somehow stole
• 41:45
Speaker 1: a march on him and secured the appointment. Ivan Ilyitch
• 41:48
Speaker 1: took offense, began upbraiding him and quarreled with him and
• 41:52
Speaker 1: with his own superiors. A coolness was felt towards him,
• 41:56
Speaker 1: and on the next appointment that was made he was
• 41:58
Speaker 1: again passed over. This was in the year eighteen eighty.
• 42:03
Speaker 1: That year was the most painful one in ivan Ilitsch's life.
• 42:07
Speaker 1: During that year, it became evident, on the one hand
• 42:09
Speaker 1: that his pay was insufficient for his expenses, on the
• 42:13
Speaker 1: other hand, that he had been forgotten by every one,
• 42:16
Speaker 1: and that what seemed to him the most monstrous, the
• 42:18
Speaker 1: crudest injustice, appeared to other people as a quite commonplace fact.
• 42:23
Speaker 1: Even his father felt no obligation to assist him. He
• 42:27
Speaker 1: felt that every one had deserted him, and that every
• 42:29
Speaker 1: one regarded his position, with an income of three thousand,
• 42:32
Speaker 1: five hundred roubles, as a quite normal and even fortunate one.
• 42:37
Speaker 1: He alone, with a sense of the injustice done him,
• 42:40
Speaker 1: and the everlasting nagging of his wife and the debts
• 42:43
Speaker 1: he had begun to accumulate living beyond his means, knew
• 42:46
Speaker 1: that his position was far from being normal. The summer
• 42:50
Speaker 1: of that year, to cut down his expenses, he took
• 42:53
Speaker 1: a holiday and went with his wife to spend the
• 42:55
Speaker 1: summer in the country at her brother's. In the country,
• 42:59
Speaker 1: with no official duties to occupy him, ivan Ilyitch was
• 43:02
Speaker 1: for the first time a prey not to simple boredom,
• 43:05
Speaker 1: but to intolerable depression, and he made up his mind
• 43:08
Speaker 1: that things could not go on like that, and that
• 43:11
Speaker 1: it was absolutely necessary to take some decisive steps. After
• 43:16
Speaker 1: a sleepless night spent by ivan Ilyitch walking up and
• 43:19
Speaker 1: down the terrace, he determined to go to Petersburg to
• 43:22
Speaker 1: take active steps and to get transferred to some other department,
• 43:25
Speaker 1: so as to revenge himself on them, the people, that is,
• 43:29
Speaker 1: who had not known how to appreciate him. Next day,
• 43:33
Speaker 1: in spite of all the efforts of his wife and
• 43:35
Speaker 1: his mother in law to dissuade him, he set off
• 43:37
Speaker 1: to Petersburg. He went with a single object before him,
• 43:42
Speaker 1: to obtain a post with an income of five thousand.
• 43:45
Speaker 1: He was ready now to be satisfied with a post
• 43:47
Speaker 1: in any department of any tendency, with any kind of work.
• 43:51
Speaker 1: He must only have a post, a post with five
• 43:54
Speaker 1: thousand in the executive department, the banks, the railways, the
• 43:59
Speaker 1: Empress Mariyas, in institutions, even in the customs duties. What
• 44:03
Speaker 1: was essential was five thousand, and essential it was too
• 44:07
Speaker 1: to get out of the department in which they had
• 44:08
Speaker 1: failed to appreciate his value. And behold, this quest of
• 44:13
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch's was crowned with wonderful unexpected success at Kerk.
• 44:19
Speaker 1: There got into the same first class carriage f s
• 44:22
Speaker 1: Ilien an acquaintance who told him of a telegram just
• 44:25
Speaker 1: received by the governor of Kerk announcing a change about
• 44:28
Speaker 1: to take place in the ministry. Pyotr Ivanovitch was to
• 44:31
Speaker 1: be superseded by Ivan Semyonovitch. The proposed change, apart from
• 44:37
Speaker 1: its significance for Russia, had special significance for ivan Ilyitch,
• 44:41
Speaker 1: from the fact that by bringing to the front a
• 44:43
Speaker 1: new person, Pyotr Petrovitch and obviously therefore his friend Zahara Ivanovitch,
• 44:49
Speaker 1: it was in the highest degree propitious to ivan Ilyitch's
• 44:52
Speaker 1: own plans. Tahara Ivanovitch was a friend and schoolfellow of
• 44:56
Speaker 1: ivan Ilitch's at Moscow. The news was confirmed on arriving
• 45:01
Speaker 1: at Petersburg. Ivan Ilyitch looked up Zahar Ivanovitch and received
• 45:06
Speaker 1: a positive promise of an appointment in his former department,
• 45:09
Speaker 1: that of Justice. A week later, he telegraphed to his
• 45:13
Speaker 1: wife Zahar Miller's place at first report, I receive appointment.
• 45:19
Speaker 1: Thanks to these changes, ivan Ilyitch unexpectedly obtained and the
• 45:22
Speaker 1: same department as before, an appointment which placed him two
• 45:26
Speaker 1: stages higher than his former colleagues, and gave him an
• 45:29
Speaker 1: income of five thousand, together with the official allowance of
• 45:32
Speaker 1: three thousand, five hundred for traveling expenses. All his ill
• 45:36
Speaker 1: humor with his former enemies and the whole department was forgotten,
• 45:40
Speaker 1: and ivan Ilyitch was completely happy. Ivan Ilyitch went back
• 45:45
Speaker 1: to the country more light hearted and good tempered than
• 45:47
Speaker 1: he had been for a very long while. Praskovya Fyodorovna
• 45:51
Speaker 1: was in better spirits too, and peace was patched up
• 45:54
Speaker 1: between them. Ivan Ilyitch described what respect everyone had shown
• 45:59
Speaker 1: him in Petersburg, how all those who had been his
• 46:01
Speaker 1: enemies had been put to shame and were cringing now
• 46:04
Speaker 1: before him, how envious they were of his appointment, and
• 46:08
Speaker 1: still more of the high favor in which he stood
• 46:10
Speaker 1: at Petersburg. Kraskovya Fyodorovna listened to this and pretended to
• 46:15
Speaker 1: believe it, and did not contradict him in anything, but
• 46:19
Speaker 1: confined herself to making plans for her new arrangements in
• 46:22
Speaker 1: the town to which they would be moving. And ivan
• 46:25
Speaker 1: Ilyitch saw with delight that these plans were his plans,
• 46:29
Speaker 1: that they were agreed, and that his life after this
• 46:32
Speaker 1: disturbing Hitch in its progress, was about to regain its
• 46:35
Speaker 1: true normal character of light hearted, agreeableness and propriety. Ivan
• 46:41
Speaker 1: Ilyitch had come back to the country for a short stay.
• 46:43
Speaker 1: Only he had to enter upon the duties of his
• 46:46
Speaker 1: new office on the tenth of September, and besides, he
• 46:49
Speaker 1: needed some time to settle in a new place, to
• 46:52
Speaker 1: move all his belongings from the other province, to purchase
• 46:55
Speaker 1: an order many things. In addition, in short, to arrange
• 46:58
Speaker 1: things as settled in his own mind, and almost exactly
• 47:01
Speaker 1: as settled in the heart too of Praskovyafyorovna. And now
• 47:07
Speaker 1: when everything was so successfully arranged, and when he and
• 47:10
Speaker 1: his wife were agreed in their aim and were besides
• 47:13
Speaker 1: so little together, they got on with one another as
• 47:17
Speaker 1: they had not got on together since the early years
• 47:19
Speaker 1: of their married life. Ivan Ilyitch had thought of taking
• 47:23
Speaker 1: his family away with him at once, but his sister
• 47:25
Speaker 1: and his brother in law, who had suddenly become extremely
• 47:29
Speaker 1: cordial and intimate with him and his family, were so
• 47:32
Speaker 1: pressing and urging them to stay that he set off alone.
• 47:36
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch started off and a light hearted temper, produced
• 47:39
Speaker 1: by his success and his good understanding with his wife
• 47:43
Speaker 1: one thing backing up another did not desert him all
• 47:46
Speaker 1: the time. He found a charming set of apartments, the
• 47:50
Speaker 1: very thing both husband and wife had dreamed of. Spacious,
• 47:54
Speaker 1: lofty reception rooms in the old style, a comfortable, dignified
• 47:58
Speaker 1: looking study for him, rooms for his wife and daughter,
• 48:02
Speaker 1: a school room for his son, everything as though planned
• 48:05
Speaker 1: on purpose for them. Ivan Ilyitch himself looked after the
• 48:10
Speaker 1: furnishing of them, chose the wall papers, bought furniture by preference,
• 48:14
Speaker 1: antique furniture which had a peculiar Camille Foe style to
• 48:18
Speaker 1: his mind, and it all grew up and grew up
• 48:21
Speaker 1: and really attained the ideal he had set before himself.
• 48:25
Speaker 1: When he had half finished arranging the house, his arrangement
• 48:28
Speaker 1: surpassed his own expectations. He saw the kami il fau character,
• 48:33
Speaker 1: elegant and free from vulgarity, that the whole would have
• 48:36
Speaker 1: when it was all ready. As he fell asleep, he
• 48:39
Speaker 1: pictured to himself the reception room as it would be.
• 48:43
Speaker 1: Looking at the drawing room, not yet finished, he could
• 48:46
Speaker 1: see the hearth, the screen, the etteger, and the little
• 48:49
Speaker 1: chairs dotted here and there, the plates and dishes on
• 48:52
Speaker 1: the wall, and the bronzes as they would be when
• 48:55
Speaker 1: they were all put in their places. He was delighted
• 48:59
Speaker 1: with the thought of how he would impress Praskovya and Lizanka,
• 49:02
Speaker 1: who had taste too in this line. They would never
• 49:05
Speaker 1: expect anything like it. He was particularly successful in coming
• 49:10
Speaker 1: across and buying cheap old pieces of furniture, which gave
• 49:13
Speaker 1: a peculiarly aristocratic air to the whole. In his letters,
• 49:17
Speaker 1: he purposely disparaged everything so as to surprise them all.
• 49:22
Speaker 1: This so absorbed him that the duties of his new office,
• 49:25
Speaker 1: though he was so fond of his official work, interested
• 49:28
Speaker 1: him less than he had expected. During sittings of the court,
• 49:31
Speaker 1: he had moments of inattention. He pondered the question which
• 49:35
Speaker 1: sort of cornices to have on the window blinds, straight
• 49:39
Speaker 1: or fluted. He was so interested in this business that
• 49:42
Speaker 1: he often set to work with his own hands, moved
• 49:45
Speaker 1: a piece of furniture, or hung up curtains himself. One day,
• 49:50
Speaker 1: he went up a ladder to show a workman who
• 49:52
Speaker 1: did not understand how he wanted some hanging straped made
• 49:55
Speaker 1: a false step and slipped, but like a strong and
• 49:58
Speaker 1: nimble person, he cl own and only knocked his side
• 50:02
Speaker 1: against the corner of a frame. The bruised place ached,
• 50:05
Speaker 1: but it soon passed off. Ivan Ilyitch felt all this
• 50:09
Speaker 1: time particularly good, humored and well, he wrote, I feel
• 50:14
Speaker 1: fifteen years younger. He thought his house furnishing would be
• 50:18
Speaker 1: finished in September, but it dragged on to the middle
• 50:20
Speaker 1: of October. But then the effect was charming. Not he
• 50:24
Speaker 1: only said so, but every one who saw it told
• 50:27
Speaker 1: him so too. In reality, it was all just what
• 50:32
Speaker 1: is commonly seen in the houses of people who are
• 50:34
Speaker 1: not exactly wealthy, but want to look like wealthy people,
• 50:38
Speaker 1: and so succeed only in being like one another. Hangings,
• 50:42
Speaker 1: dark wood, flowers, rugs and bronzes, everything dark and highly polished,
• 50:48
Speaker 1: everything that all people of a certain class have, so
• 50:51
Speaker 1: as to be like all people of a certain class.
• 50:54
Speaker 1: And in his case it was all so like that
• 50:57
Speaker 1: it made no impression at all, but it all seemed
• 51:00
Speaker 1: to him somehow special. When he met his family at
• 51:03
Speaker 1: the railway station and brought them to his newly furnished rooms,
• 51:07
Speaker 1: all lighted up in readiness, and a footman in a
• 51:10
Speaker 1: white tie opened the door into an entry decorated with flowers,
• 51:13
Speaker 1: and then they walked into the drawing room and the study,
• 51:16
Speaker 1: uttering cries of delight. He was very happy, conducted them everywhere, eagerly,
• 51:21
Speaker 1: drinking in their praises and beaming with satisfaction. The same evening,
• 51:26
Speaker 1: while they talked about various things at tea, Praskovya, Fyodorovna
• 51:30
Speaker 1: inquired about his fall, and he laughed and showed them
• 51:33
Speaker 1: how he had gone flying, and how he had frightened
• 51:35
Speaker 1: the upholsterer. It's as well, I'm something of an athlete.
• 51:40
Speaker 1: Another man might have been killed, and I got nothing
• 51:43
Speaker 1: worse than a blow. Here. When it's touched, it hurts,
• 51:46
Speaker 1: but it's going off already, nothing but a bruise. And
• 51:51
Speaker 1: they began to live in their new abode, which, as
• 51:54
Speaker 1: is always the case, when they had got thoroughly settled in,
• 51:57
Speaker 1: they found to be short of just one room, and
• 52:00
Speaker 1: with their new income, which as always was only a
• 52:04
Speaker 1: little some five hundred roubles too little. And everything went
• 52:08
Speaker 1: very well. Things went particularly well at first, before everything
• 52:13
Speaker 1: was quite finally arranged, and there was still something to
• 52:15
Speaker 1: do to the place, something to buy, something to order,
• 52:18
Speaker 1: something to move, something to make to fit. Though there
• 52:23
Speaker 1: were indeed several disputes between husband and wife, both were
• 52:26
Speaker 1: so well satisfied, and there was so much to do
• 52:29
Speaker 1: that it all went off without serious quarrels. When there
• 52:33
Speaker 1: was nothing left to arrange, it became a little dull,
• 52:36
Speaker 1: and something seemed to be lacking. But then they were
• 52:39
Speaker 1: making acquaintances and forming habits, and life was filled up again.
• 52:44
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch, after spending the morning in the court, returned
• 52:47
Speaker 1: home to dinner, and at first he was generally in
• 52:50
Speaker 1: a good humor, although this was apt to be upset
• 52:52
Speaker 1: a little, and precisely on account of the new abode.
• 52:56
Speaker 1: Every spot on the tablecloth, on the hangings, the string
• 52:59
Speaker 1: of a window blind broken irritated him. He had devoted
• 53:03
Speaker 1: so much trouble to the arrangement of the rooms that
• 53:06
Speaker 1: any disturbance of their order distressed him. But on the
• 53:09
Speaker 1: whole the life of ivan Ilyitch ran its course as
• 53:12
Speaker 1: according to his conviction, life ought to do easily, agreeably
• 53:17
Speaker 1: and decorously. He got up at nine, drank his coffee,
• 53:21
Speaker 1: read the newspaper, then put on his official uniform and
• 53:24
Speaker 1: went to the court. There the routine of the daily
• 53:28
Speaker 1: work was ready mapped out for him, and he stepped
• 53:30
Speaker 1: into it at once. People with petitions inquiries in the office.
• 53:35
Speaker 1: The office itself, the sittings public and preliminary. In all this,
• 53:40
Speaker 1: the great thing necessary was to exclude everything with the
• 53:43
Speaker 1: sap of life in it, which always disturbs the regular
• 53:46
Speaker 1: course of official business, not to admit any sort of
• 53:49
Speaker 1: relations with people except the official relations. The motive of
• 53:53
Speaker 1: all intercourse had to be simply the official motive, and
• 53:57
Speaker 1: the intercourse itself to be only official. A man would come,
• 54:01
Speaker 1: for instance, anxious for certain information, ivan Ilyitch, not being
• 54:06
Speaker 1: the functionary on duty, would have nothing whatever to do
• 54:09
Speaker 1: with such a man. But if this man's relation to
• 54:12
Speaker 1: him as a member of the court is such as
• 54:15
Speaker 1: can be formulated on official stamped paper. Within the limits
• 54:19
Speaker 1: of such a relation, ivan Ilyitch would do everything, positively,
• 54:23
Speaker 1: everything he could, and in doing so would observe the
• 54:26
Speaker 1: semblance of human friendly relations, that is, the courtesies of
• 54:30
Speaker 1: social life. But where the official relation ended, there everything
• 54:35
Speaker 1: else stopped too. This art of keeping the official aspect
• 54:39
Speaker 1: of things apart from his real life, ivan Ilyitch possessed
• 54:42
Speaker 1: in the highest degree, and through long practice and natural aptitude,
• 54:47
Speaker 1: he had brought it to such a pitch of perfection
• 54:50
Speaker 1: that he even permitted himself at times like a skilled
• 54:53
Speaker 1: specialist as it were, in jest, to let the human
• 54:56
Speaker 1: and official relations mingle. He allowed himself this liberty just
• 55:01
Speaker 1: because he felt he had the power at any moment
• 55:03
Speaker 1: if he wished it, to take up the purely official
• 55:06
Speaker 1: line again and to drop the human relation. This thing
• 55:10
Speaker 1: was not simply easy, agreeable and decorous, and Yvonne Ilyitch's
• 55:14
Speaker 1: hands it attained a positively artistic character. In the intervals
• 55:19
Speaker 1: of business, he smoked, drank tea, chatted a little about politics,
• 55:23
Speaker 1: a little about public affairs, a little about cards, but
• 55:27
Speaker 1: most of all about appointments in the service, and tired,
• 55:31
Speaker 1: but feeling like some artist who has skillfully played his
• 55:34
Speaker 1: part in the performance one of the first violins in
• 55:37
Speaker 1: the orchestra. He returned home. At home, his daughter and
• 55:41
Speaker 1: her mother had been paying calls somewhere or else. Some
• 55:44
Speaker 1: one had been calling on them. The son had been
• 55:47
Speaker 1: at school, had been preparing his lessons with his teachers
• 55:50
Speaker 1: and duly learning correctly what was taught at the high school.
• 55:54
Speaker 1: Everything was as it should be. After dinner, if there
• 55:58
Speaker 1: were no visitors. Yvonne and Ilyitch sometimes read some book
• 56:02
Speaker 1: of which people were talking, and in the evening sat
• 56:04
Speaker 1: down to work. That is, read official papers, compared them
• 56:08
Speaker 1: with the laws sordid depositions, and put them under the laws.
• 56:13
Speaker 1: This he found neither tiresome nor entertaining. It was tiresome
• 56:17
Speaker 1: when he might have been playing screw, but if there
• 56:20
Speaker 1: were no screw going on, it was any way better
• 56:22
Speaker 1: than sitting alone or with his wife. Ivan Ilyitch's pleasures
• 56:27
Speaker 1: were a little dinners to which he invited ladies and
• 56:29
Speaker 1: gentlemen of good social position, and such methods of passing
• 56:33
Speaker 1: the time with them as were usual with such persons,
• 56:36
Speaker 1: so that his drawing room might be like all other
• 56:39
Speaker 1: drawing rooms. Once they even gave a party a dance,
• 56:44
Speaker 1: and ivan Ilyitch enjoyed it, and everything was very successful,
• 56:48
Speaker 1: except that it led to a violent quarrel with his
• 56:51
Speaker 1: wife over the tarts and sweetmeats. Praskovya Fyorovna had her
• 56:55
Speaker 1: own plan, while ivan Ilyitch insisted on getting everything from
• 56:59
Speaker 1: an exp pastry cook and ordered a great many tarts.
• 57:03
Speaker 1: And the quarrel was because these tarts were left over,
• 57:06
Speaker 1: and the pastrycook's bill came to forty five roubles. The
• 57:10
Speaker 1: quarrel was a violent and unpleasant one, so much so
• 57:13
Speaker 1: that Praskovyofyorovna called him fool, imbecile, and he clutched at
• 57:18
Speaker 1: his head, and in his anger made some allusion to
• 57:21
Speaker 1: a divorce. But the party itself was enjoyable. There were
• 57:25
Speaker 1: all the best people, and ivan Ilyitch danced with Princess Trufanov,
• 57:30
Speaker 1: the sister of the one so well known in connection
• 57:32
Speaker 1: with the charitable association called Bear My Burden. His official
• 57:37
Speaker 1: pleasures lay in the gratification of his pride, his social
• 57:40
Speaker 1: pleasures lay in the gratification of his vanity. But ivan
• 57:44
Speaker 1: Ilyitch's most real pleasure was the pleasure of playing screw,
• 57:48
Speaker 1: the Russian equivalent for poker. He admitted to himself that,
• 57:52
Speaker 1: after all, after whatever unpleasant incidents there had been in
• 57:55
Speaker 1: his life, the pleasure which burned like a candle before
• 57:58
Speaker 1: all others, was sitting with good players and not noisy
• 58:02
Speaker 1: partners at screw. And of course a fourhand game. Playing
• 58:06
Speaker 1: with five was never a success, though one pretends to
• 58:09
Speaker 1: like it particularly and with good cards to play a
• 58:13
Speaker 1: shrewd serious game. Then supper and a glass of wine.
• 58:18
Speaker 1: And after screw, especially after winning some small stakes, winning
• 58:22
Speaker 1: large sums was unpleasant, ivan Ilyitch went to bed in
• 58:25
Speaker 1: a particularly happy frame of mind, so they lived, they
• 58:31
Speaker 1: moved in the very best circle, and were visited by
• 58:33
Speaker 1: people of consequence and young people. In their views of
• 58:38
Speaker 1: their circle of acquaintances, the husband, the wife, and the
• 58:41
Speaker 1: daughter were in complete accord and without any expressed agreement
• 58:45
Speaker 1: on the subject. They all acted alike in dropping and
• 58:48
Speaker 1: shaking off various friends and relations shabby persons who swooped
• 58:52
Speaker 1: down upon them in their drawing room with Japanese plates
• 58:55
Speaker 1: on the walls, and pressed their civilities on them. Soon
• 58:59
Speaker 1: these shabby persons ceased fluttering about them, and none but
• 59:02
Speaker 1: the very best society was seen at the Gulavines. Young
• 59:07
Speaker 1: men began to pay attention to Leizanka and Petrushev, the
• 59:10
Speaker 1: son of Dmitri Ivanovitch Petrushchev and the sole heir of
• 59:14
Speaker 1: his fortune and examining magistrate began to be so attentive
• 59:17
Speaker 1: to Lezanka that ivan Ilyitch had raised the question with
• 59:21
Speaker 1: his wife whether it would not be as well to
• 59:23
Speaker 1: arrange a sledge drive for them, or to get up
• 59:26
Speaker 1: some theatricals. So they lived, and everything went on in
• 59:30
Speaker 1: this way without change, and everything was very nice. End
• 59:36
Speaker 1: of chapter three, all were in good health. One could
• 59:40
Speaker 1: not use the word ill health. In connection with the symptoms,
• 59:43
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch sometimes complained of, namely a queer taste in
• 59:47
Speaker 1: his mouth and a sort of uncomfortable feeling on the
• 59:49
Speaker 1: left side of the stomach. But it came to pass
• 59:53
Speaker 1: that this uncomfortable feeling kept increasing and became not exactly
• 59:57
Speaker 1: a pain, but a continual sense of weight in a
• 1:00:00
Speaker 1: his side, an irritable temper. This irritable temper, continually growing
• 1:00:05
Speaker 1: and growing, began at last to mar the agreeable easiness
• 1:00:08
Speaker 1: and decorum that had reigned in the Golovine household. Quarrels
• 1:00:12
Speaker 1: between the husband and wife became more and more frequent,
• 1:00:15
Speaker 1: and soon all the easiness and amenity of life had
• 1:00:18
Speaker 1: fallen away, and mere propriety was maintained with difficulty. Scenes
• 1:00:24
Speaker 1: became again more frequent. Again, there were only islands in
• 1:00:28
Speaker 1: the sea of contention, and but few of these at
• 1:00:31
Speaker 1: which the husband and wife could meet without an outbreak.
• 1:00:34
Speaker 1: And Praskovya Fyorovna said, now, not without grounds, that her
• 1:00:38
Speaker 1: husband had a trying temper. With her characteristic exaggeration, she
• 1:00:43
Speaker 1: said he had always had this awful temper, and she
• 1:00:46
Speaker 1: had needed all her sweetness to put up with it.
• 1:00:48
Speaker 1: For twenty years, it was true that it was he
• 1:00:51
Speaker 1: now who began the quarrels. His gusts of temper always
• 1:00:55
Speaker 1: broke out just before dinner, and often just as he
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: was beginning to eat at the soup, he would notice
• 1:01:00
Speaker 1: that some piece of the crockery had been chipped, or
• 1:01:03
Speaker 1: that the food was not nice, or that his son
• 1:01:06
Speaker 1: put his elbow on the table, or his daughter's hair
• 1:01:08
Speaker 1: was not arranged as he liked it. And whatever it was,
• 1:01:12
Speaker 1: he laid the blame of it on Praskovya Fyodorovna. Praskovya
• 1:01:16
Speaker 1: Fyorovna had at first retorted in the same strain and
• 1:01:19
Speaker 1: said all sorts of horrid things to him, But on
• 1:01:22
Speaker 1: two occasions, just at the beginning of dinner, he had
• 1:01:25
Speaker 1: flown into such a frenzy that she perceived that it
• 1:01:28
Speaker 1: was due to physical derangement and was brought on by
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: taking food, and she controlled herself. She did not reply,
• 1:01:34
Speaker 1: but simply made haste to get dinner over. Praskovya Fyodorovna
• 1:01:39
Speaker 1: took great credit to herself for this exercise of self control.
• 1:01:43
Speaker 1: Making up her mind that her husband had a fearful
• 1:01:46
Speaker 1: temper and made her life miserable, she began to feel
• 1:01:49
Speaker 1: sorry for herself, and the more she felt for herself,
• 1:01:52
Speaker 1: the more she hated her husband. She began to wish
• 1:01:55
Speaker 1: he were dead, yet could not wish it because then
• 1:01:58
Speaker 1: there would be no income, and this exasperated her against
• 1:02:02
Speaker 1: him even more. She considered herself dreadfully unfortunate, precisely because
• 1:02:07
Speaker 1: even his death could not save her, and she felt
• 1:02:10
Speaker 1: irritated and concealed it. And this hidden irritation on her
• 1:02:14
Speaker 1: side increased his irritability. After one violent scene in which
• 1:02:19
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch had been particularly unjust, and after which he
• 1:02:22
Speaker 1: had said an explanation that he certainly was irritable, but
• 1:02:26
Speaker 1: that it was due to illness, she said that if
• 1:02:28
Speaker 1: he were ill, he ought to take steps, and insisted
• 1:02:31
Speaker 1: on his going to see a celebrated doctor. He went.
• 1:02:36
Speaker 1: Everything was as he had expected, Everything was as it
• 1:02:39
Speaker 1: always is. The waiting and the assumption of dignity, that
• 1:02:43
Speaker 1: professional dignity he knew so well, exactly as he assumed
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: it himself in court, and the sounding and listening and
• 1:02:50
Speaker 1: questions that called for answers that were foregone conclusions and
• 1:02:54
Speaker 1: obviously superfluous, and the significant air that seemed to insinuate
• 1:02:58
Speaker 1: you only leave it all to us, and we will
• 1:03:00
Speaker 1: arrange everything for us. It is certain and incontestable how
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: to arrange everything, everything in one way, for every man
• 1:03:08
Speaker 1: of every sort. It was all exactly as in his
• 1:03:12
Speaker 1: court of justice, exactly the same air as he put
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: on in dealing with a man brought up for judgment,
• 1:03:18
Speaker 1: the doctor put on for him. The doctor said, this
• 1:03:22
Speaker 1: and that proves that you have such and such a
• 1:03:24
Speaker 1: thing wrong inside you. But if that is not confirmed
• 1:03:27
Speaker 1: by analysis of this and that, then we must assume
• 1:03:30
Speaker 1: this and that. If we assume this and that, then
• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: and so on. To ivan Ilyitch, there was only one
• 1:03:37
Speaker 1: question of consequence, was his condition dangerous or not? But
• 1:03:41
Speaker 1: the doctor ignored that irrelevant inquiry. From the doctor's point
• 1:03:45
Speaker 1: of view, this was a side issue, not the subject
• 1:03:48
Speaker 1: under consideration. The only real question was the balance of
• 1:03:51
Speaker 1: probabilities between a loose kidney, chronic catarrh, and appendicitis. It
• 1:03:57
Speaker 1: was not a question of the life of ivan Ilyitch,
• 1:03:59
Speaker 1: but the question between the loose kidney and the intestinal appendix.
• 1:04:04
Speaker 1: In this question, as it seemed to ivan Ilyitch, the
• 1:04:06
Speaker 1: doctor solved in a brilliant manner in favor of the appendix,
• 1:04:10
Speaker 1: with the reservation that analysis of the water might give
• 1:04:13
Speaker 1: a fresh clue, and that then the aspect of the
• 1:04:16
Speaker 1: case would be altered. All this was point for point
• 1:04:19
Speaker 1: identical with what ivan Ilyitch had himself done, in brilliant
• 1:04:23
Speaker 1: fashion a thousand times over in dealing with some man
• 1:04:26
Speaker 1: on his trial. Just as brilliantly, the doctor made his
• 1:04:30
Speaker 1: summing up, and triumphantly gaily even glanced over his spectacles
• 1:04:34
Speaker 1: at the prisoner in the dock. From the doctor's summing up,
• 1:04:38
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch deduced the conclusion that things looked bad, and
• 1:04:42
Speaker 1: that he, the doctor, and most likely every one else
• 1:04:45
Speaker 1: did not care, but that things looked bad for him.
• 1:04:49
Speaker 1: And this conclusion impressed ivan Ilyitch morbidly, arousing in him
• 1:04:53
Speaker 1: a great feeling of pity for himself, of great anger
• 1:04:56
Speaker 1: against this doctor who could be unconcerned about a matter
• 1:04:59
Speaker 1: of such import whorrtants. But he said nothing of that.
• 1:05:03
Speaker 1: He got up, and, laying the fee on the table,
• 1:05:06
Speaker 1: he said, with a sigh, we sick people probably often
• 1:05:09
Speaker 1: ask inconvenient questions, Tell me is this generally a dangerous illness?
• 1:05:14
Speaker 1: Or not? The doctor glanced severely at him with one
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: eye through his spectacles, as though to say, Prisoner at
• 1:05:22
Speaker 1: the bar. If you will not keep within the limits
• 1:05:24
Speaker 1: of the questions allowed you, I shall be compelled to
• 1:05:26
Speaker 1: take measures for your removal from the precincts of the court.
• 1:05:31
Speaker 1: I have told you what I thought necessary and suitable already,
• 1:05:34
Speaker 1: said the doctor. The analysis will show anything further, and
• 1:05:38
Speaker 1: the doctor bowed him out. Ivan Ilyitch went out, slowly
• 1:05:43
Speaker 1: and dejectedly, got into his sledge and drove home. All
• 1:05:47
Speaker 1: the way home he was incessantly going over all the
• 1:05:49
Speaker 1: doctor had said, trying to translate all these complicated, obscure
• 1:05:53
Speaker 1: scientific phrases into simple language, and to read in them
• 1:05:56
Speaker 1: and answer to the question it's bad, Is it very bad?
• 1:06:01
Speaker 1: Or nothing much as yet? And it seemed to him
• 1:06:04
Speaker 1: that the upshot of all the doctor had said was
• 1:06:06
Speaker 1: that it was very bad. Everything seemed dismal to ivan Ilitch.
• 1:06:12
Speaker 1: In the streets. The sledge drivers were dismal, the houses
• 1:06:15
Speaker 1: were dismal, the people passing and the shops were dismal.
• 1:06:20
Speaker 1: This ache, this dull, gnawing ache that never ceased for
• 1:06:23
Speaker 1: a second, seemed, when connected with the doctor's obscure utterances,
• 1:06:28
Speaker 1: to have gained a new, more serious significance. With a
• 1:06:31
Speaker 1: new sense of misery, Ivan Ilitch kept watch on it.
• 1:06:34
Speaker 1: Now he reached home and began to tell his wife
• 1:06:38
Speaker 1: about it. His wife listened, but in the middle of
• 1:06:41
Speaker 1: his account, his daughter came in with her hat on,
• 1:06:43
Speaker 1: ready to go out with her mother. Reluctantly, she half
• 1:06:47
Speaker 1: sat down to listen to these tedious details, but she
• 1:06:50
Speaker 1: could not stand it for long, and her mother did
• 1:06:52
Speaker 1: not hear his story to the end. Well, I'm very glad,
• 1:06:57
Speaker 1: said his wife. Now you must be sure and take
• 1:07:00
Speaker 1: the medicine regularly. Give me the prescription. I'll send Garassim
• 1:07:03
Speaker 1: to the chemist's and she went to get ready to
• 1:07:06
Speaker 1: go out. He had not taken breath while she was
• 1:07:10
Speaker 1: in the room, and he heaved a deep sigh when
• 1:07:12
Speaker 1: she was gone. Well, he said, maybe it really is nothing.
• 1:07:18
Speaker 1: As yet, he began to take the medicine to carry
• 1:07:23
Speaker 1: out the doctor's directions, which were changed after the analysis
• 1:07:26
Speaker 1: of the water. But it was just at this point
• 1:07:29
Speaker 1: that some confusion arose, either in the analysis or in
• 1:07:32
Speaker 1: what ought to have followed from it. The doctor himself,
• 1:07:36
Speaker 1: of course, could not be blamed for it. But it
• 1:07:38
Speaker 1: turned out that things had not gone as the doctor
• 1:07:40
Speaker 1: had told him. Either he had forgotten or told a
• 1:07:44
Speaker 1: lie or was hiding something from him, But ivan Ilyitch
• 1:07:48
Speaker 1: still went on just as exactly carrying out the doctor's direction,
• 1:07:52
Speaker 1: and in doing so he found comfort. At first. From
• 1:07:56
Speaker 1: the time of his visit to the doctor, ivan Ilyitch's
• 1:07:59
Speaker 1: principal occupation became the exact observance of the doctor's prescriptions
• 1:08:03
Speaker 1: as regards hygiene and medicine, and the careful observation of
• 1:08:07
Speaker 1: his ailment. In all the functions of his organism, ivan
• 1:08:11
Speaker 1: Ilyitch's principal interest came to be people's ailments and people's health.
• 1:08:16
Speaker 1: When anything was said in his presence about sick people,
• 1:08:19
Speaker 1: about deaths and recoveries, especially in the case of an
• 1:08:22
Speaker 1: illness resembling his own, he listened, trying to conceal his excitement,
• 1:08:27
Speaker 1: asked questions, and applied what he heard to his own trouble.
• 1:08:32
Speaker 1: The ache did not grow less, but ivan Ilyitch made
• 1:08:35
Speaker 1: great efforts to force himself to believe that he was better,
• 1:08:38
Speaker 1: and he succeeded in deceiving himself so long as nothing
• 1:08:41
Speaker 1: happened to disturb him. But as soon as he had
• 1:08:44
Speaker 1: a mischance, some unpleasant words with his wife, a failure
• 1:08:48
Speaker 1: in his official work, an unlucky hand at screw. He
• 1:08:52
Speaker 1: was at once acutely sensible of his illness. In former
• 1:08:55
Speaker 1: days he had borne with such mishaps, hoping soon to
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: retrieve the mistake, to make a struggle, to reach success,
• 1:09:02
Speaker 1: later to have a lucky hand. But now he was
• 1:09:05
Speaker 1: cast down by every mischance and reduced to despair. He
• 1:09:10
Speaker 1: would say to himself, here, I'm only just beginning to
• 1:09:14
Speaker 1: get better, and the medicine has begun to take effect,
• 1:09:17
Speaker 1: and now this mischance or disappointment, and he was furious
• 1:09:22
Speaker 1: against the mischance or the people who were causing him
• 1:09:24
Speaker 1: the disappointment in killing him. And he felt that this
• 1:09:27
Speaker 1: fury was killing him, but could not check it. One
• 1:09:31
Speaker 1: would have thought that it should have been clear to
• 1:09:33
Speaker 1: him that this exasperation against circumstances in people was aggravating
• 1:09:37
Speaker 1: his disease, and that therefore he ought not to pay
• 1:09:40
Speaker 1: attention to the unpleasant incidents. But his reasoning took quite
• 1:09:44
Speaker 1: the opposite direction. He said that he needed peace and
• 1:09:48
Speaker 1: was on the watch for everything that disturbed his peace,
• 1:09:51
Speaker 1: and at the slightest disturbance of it, he flew into
• 1:09:54
Speaker 1: a rage. What made his position was was that he
• 1:09:57
Speaker 1: read medical books and consulted doctors. He got worse so
• 1:10:01
Speaker 1: gradually that he might have deceived himself. Comparing one day
• 1:10:05
Speaker 1: with another, the difference was so slight. But when he
• 1:10:08
Speaker 1: consulted the doctors, then it seemed to him that he
• 1:10:11
Speaker 1: was getting worse, and very rapidly. So indeed, and in
• 1:10:15
Speaker 1: spite of this, he was continually consulting the doctors. That
• 1:10:20
Speaker 1: month he called on another celebrated doctor. The second celebrity
• 1:10:24
Speaker 1: said almost the same as the first, but put his
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: questions differently, and the interview with this celebrity only redoubled
• 1:10:30
Speaker 1: the doubts and terrors of ivan Ilyitch. A friend of
• 1:10:34
Speaker 1: a friend of his, a very good doctor, diagnosed the
• 1:10:37
Speaker 1: disease quite differently, and in spite of the fact that
• 1:10:40
Speaker 1: he guaranteed recovery by his questions and his suppositions, he
• 1:10:44
Speaker 1: confused ivan Ilyitch even more and strengthened his suspicions. A
• 1:10:49
Speaker 1: homeopath gave yet another diagnosis of the complaint and prescribed medicine,
• 1:10:53
Speaker 1: which ivan Ilyitch took secretly for a week. But after
• 1:10:57
Speaker 1: a week of the homeopathic medicine, he felt no relief
• 1:11:00
Speaker 1: and losing faith both in the other doctor's treatment and
• 1:11:03
Speaker 1: in this he fell into even deeper depression. One day,
• 1:11:08
Speaker 1: a lady of his acquaintance talked to him of the
• 1:11:10
Speaker 1: healing wrought by the holy pictures. Ivan Ilyitch caught himself
• 1:11:15
Speaker 1: listening attentively and believing in the reality of the facts alleged.
• 1:11:19
Speaker 1: This incident alarmed him. Can I have degenerated to such
• 1:11:23
Speaker 1: a point of intellectual feebleness? He said to himself. Nonsense,
• 1:11:29
Speaker 1: it's all rubbish. I must not give way to nervous fears.
• 1:11:32
Speaker 1: But fixing on one doctor adhere strictly to his treatment.
• 1:11:36
  Speaker 1: That's what I will do. Now it's settled, I won't
• 1:11:40
Speaker 1: think about it, but till next summer, I will stick
• 1:11:42
Speaker 1: to the treatment, and then I shall see. Now I'll
• 1:11:46
Speaker 1: put a stop to this wavering. It was easy to
• 1:11:50
Speaker 1: say this, but impossible to carry it out. The pain
• 1:11:53
Speaker 1: in his side was always dragging at him, seeming to
• 1:11:56
Speaker 1: grow more acute and ever more incessant. It seemed to
• 1:11:59
Speaker 1: him that the tape in his mouth was queerer, and
• 1:12:02
Speaker 1: there was a loathesome smell even from his breath, and
• 1:12:05
Speaker 1: his appetite and strength kept dwindling. There was no deceiving
• 1:12:09
Speaker 1: himself something terrible new and so important that nothing more
• 1:12:13
Speaker 1: important had ever been in ivan Ilyitch's life was taking
• 1:12:16
Speaker 1: place in him, and he alone knew of it. All
• 1:12:20
Speaker 1: about him did not or would not understand, and believed
• 1:12:24
Speaker 1: that everything in the world was going on as before.
• 1:12:27
Speaker 1: This was what tortured ivan Ilyitch more than anything. Those
• 1:12:31
Speaker 1: of his own household, most of all his wife and daughter,
• 1:12:34
Speaker 1: who were absorbed in a perfect whirl of visits, did
• 1:12:37
Speaker 1: not he saw comprehend it at all, and were annoyed
• 1:12:41
Speaker 1: that he was so depressed and exacting as though he
• 1:12:44
Speaker 1: were to blame for it. Though they tried, indeed to
• 1:12:47
Speaker 1: disguise it. He saw he was a nuisance to them,
• 1:12:50
Speaker 1: but that his wife had taken up a definite line
• 1:12:53
Speaker 1: of her own in regard to his illness, and stuck
• 1:12:55
Speaker 1: to it regardless of what he might say and do.
• 1:12:59
Speaker 1: This line was expressed thus, you know, she would say
• 1:13:03
Speaker 1: to acquaintances. Ivan Ilyitch cannot, like all other simple hearted folks,
• 1:13:09
Speaker 1: keep to the treatment prescribed him. One day, he'll take
• 1:13:12
Speaker 1: his drops and eat what he's ordered and go to
• 1:13:14
Speaker 1: bed in good time. The next day, if I don't
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: see to it, he'll suddenly forget to take his medicine,
• 1:13:20
Speaker 1: eat sturgeon, which is forbidden by the doctor's yes, and
• 1:13:24
Speaker 1: sit up at screw till past midnight. Why when did
• 1:13:29
Speaker 1: I do that? Ivan Ilyitch asked in vexation one day
• 1:13:32
Speaker 1: at Pyotr Ivanovitch's Why yesterday with Shaebek? It makes no difference.
• 1:13:40
Speaker 1: I couldn't sleep for pain. Well, it doesn't matter what
• 1:13:44
Speaker 1: you do it for, only you'll never get well like that,
• 1:13:47
Speaker 1: and you make us wretched. Praskovya Fyodorovna's external attitude to
• 1:13:52
Speaker 1: her husband's illness, openly expressed to others and to himself,
• 1:13:56
Speaker 1: was that ivan Ilyitch was to blame in the matter
• 1:13:58
Speaker 1: of his illness, and that the whole illness was another
• 1:14:01
Speaker 1: injury he was doing. To his wife, ivan Ilyitch felt
• 1:14:05
Speaker 1: that the expression of this dropped from her unconsciously, but
• 1:14:08
Speaker 1: that made it no easier for him. In his official
• 1:14:13
Speaker 1: life too, ivan Ilyitch noticed or fancied he noticed a
• 1:14:17
Speaker 1: strange attitude to him. At one time, it seemed to
• 1:14:20
Speaker 1: him that people were looking inquisitively at him as a
• 1:14:23
Speaker 1: man who would shortly have to vacate his position. At
• 1:14:26
Speaker 1: another time, his friends would suddenly begin chaffing him in
• 1:14:29
Speaker 1: a friendly way over his nervous fears, as though that
• 1:14:33
Speaker 1: awful and horrible, unheard of thing that was going on
• 1:14:36
Speaker 1: within him, incessantly gnawing at him and irresistibly dragging him
• 1:14:39
Speaker 1: away somewhere were the most agreeable subject for joking. Schwartz,
• 1:14:45
Speaker 1: especially with his jocoseness, his liveliness, and his kamil Faue tone,
• 1:14:50
Speaker 1: exasperated ivan Ilyitch by reminding him of himself. Ten years ago.
• 1:14:56
Speaker 1: Friends came sometimes to play cards. They sat down to
• 1:14:59
Speaker 1: the card table, They shuffled and dealt the new cards.
• 1:15:03
Speaker 1: Diamonds were led and followed by diamonds the seven. His
• 1:15:07
Speaker 1: partner said, can't tromp and played the two of diamonds.
• 1:15:12
Speaker 1: What then, why delightful capital it should have been? He
• 1:15:17
Speaker 1: had a trump hand. And suddenly ivan Ilyitch feels that
• 1:15:21
Speaker 1: gnawing ache, that taste in his mouth, and it strikes
• 1:15:24
Speaker 1: him as something grotesque that with that he could be
• 1:15:27
Speaker 1: glad of a trump hand. He looks at Mihail Mihalovitch,
• 1:15:31
Speaker 1: his partner. How he taps on the table with his
• 1:15:34
Speaker 1: red hand and affably and indulgently abstains from snatching up
• 1:15:38
Speaker 1: the trick and pushes the cards towards ivan Ilyitch so
• 1:15:41
Speaker 1: as to give him the pleasure of taking them up.
• 1:15:43
Speaker 1: Without any trouble, without even stretching out his hand. What
• 1:15:48
Speaker 1: does he suppose that I'm so weak that I can't
• 1:15:51
Speaker 1: stretch out my hand, thinks ivan Ilyitch. And he forgets
• 1:15:55
Speaker 1: the trumps and trumps his partner's cards and plays his
• 1:15:58
Speaker 1: trump hand without making three tricks. And what's the most
• 1:16:02
Speaker 1: awful thing of all is that he sees how upset
• 1:16:05
Speaker 1: Mihail Mihailovitch is about it, while he doesn't care a bit,
• 1:16:08
Speaker 1: And it's awful for him to think why he doesn't care.
• 1:16:13
Speaker 1: They all see that he's in pain and say to him,
• 1:16:16
Speaker 1: we can stop. If you're tired, you go and lie down,
• 1:16:20
Speaker 1: lie down. No, he's not in the least tired. They
• 1:16:23
Speaker 1: will play the rubber all are gloomy and silent. Ivan
• 1:16:28
Speaker 1: Ilyitch feels that it is he who has brought this
• 1:16:30
Speaker 1: gloom upon them, and he cannot disperse it. They have
• 1:16:34
Speaker 1: supper and the party breaks up, and ivan Ilyitch is
• 1:16:37
Speaker 1: left alone with the consciousness that his life is poisoned
• 1:16:40
Speaker 1: for him and poisons the life of others, and that
• 1:16:43
Speaker 1: this poison is not losing its force, but is continually
• 1:16:46
Speaker 1: penetrating more and more deeply into his whole existence, and
• 1:16:51
Speaker 1: with the consciousness of this, and with the physical pain,
• 1:16:54
Speaker 1: and addition and the terror. In addition to that, he
• 1:16:58
Speaker 1: must lie in his bed, often not able to sleep
• 1:17:01
Speaker 1: for pain the greater part of the night, and in
• 1:17:04
Speaker 1: the morning he must get up again, dress, go to
• 1:17:07
Speaker 1: the law court, speak, write, or if he does not
• 1:17:10
Speaker 1: go out, stay at home for all the four and
• 1:17:13
Speaker 1: twenty hours of the day and night, of which each
• 1:17:16
Speaker 1: one is a torture. And he had to live thus
• 1:17:19
Speaker 1: on the edge of the precipice, alone, without one man
• 1:17:22
Speaker 1: who would understand and feel for him, end of Chapter four.
• 1:17:28
Speaker 1: In this way, one month, then a second passed by.
• 1:17:32
Speaker 1: Just before the new year, his brother in law arrived
• 1:17:34
Speaker 1: in the town on a visit to them. Ivan Ilyitch
• 1:17:37
Speaker 1: was at the court. When he arrived, Kraskovya Fyorovna had
• 1:17:40
Speaker 1: gone out shopping. Coming home and going into his study,
• 1:17:44
Speaker 1: he found there his brother in law, a healthy florid man,
• 1:17:48
Speaker 1: engaged in unpacking his trunk. He raised his head, hearing
• 1:17:52
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch's step, and for a second stared at him
• 1:17:55
Speaker 1: without a word. That stare told ivan Ilyitch everything. His
• 1:18:01
Speaker 1: brother in law opened his mouth to utter an oh
• 1:18:04
Speaker 1: of surprise, but checked himself that confirmed it all. What
• 1:18:11
Speaker 1: have I changed? Yes, there is a change. And to
• 1:18:16
Speaker 1: all ivan Ilyitch's efforts to draw him into talking of
• 1:18:19
Speaker 1: his appearance, his brother in law met with obstinate silence.
• 1:18:24
Speaker 1: Praskovya Fyodorovna came in. The brother in law went to
• 1:18:27
Speaker 1: see her. Ivan Ilyitch locked his door and began gazing
• 1:18:31
Speaker 1: at himself in the looking glass, first full face, then
• 1:18:35
Speaker 1: in profile. He took up his photograph taken with his
• 1:18:39
Speaker 1: wife and compared the portrait with what he saw in
• 1:18:41
Speaker 1: the looking glass. The change was immense. Then he bared
• 1:18:46
Speaker 1: his arm to the elbow, looked at it, pulled the
• 1:18:49
Speaker 1: sleeve down again, sat down on an ottoman, and felt
• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: blacker than night. I mustn't, I mustn't, he said to himself.
• 1:18:59
Speaker 1: Jumped up, went to the table, opened some official paper,
• 1:19:03
Speaker 1: tried to read it, but could not. He opened the door,
• 1:19:08
Speaker 1: went into the drawing room. The door into the drawing
• 1:19:11
Speaker 1: room was closed. He went up to it on tiptoe
• 1:19:14
Speaker 1: and listened. No, you're exaggerating, Praskovya Fyodorovna was saying, exaggerating,
• 1:19:23
Speaker 1: you can't see it. Why he's a dead man. Look
• 1:19:26
Speaker 1: at his eyes, there's no light in them. But what's
• 1:19:30
Speaker 1: wrong with them? No one can tell. Nikoliv that was
• 1:19:35
Speaker 1: another doctor said something, but I don't know. Lest Chititsky
• 1:19:40
Speaker 1: this was the celebrated doctor, said the opposite. Ivan Ilyitch
• 1:19:45
Speaker 1: walked away, went to his own room, lay down, and
• 1:19:48
Speaker 1: felt amusing a kidney, a loose kidney. He remembered all
• 1:19:55
Speaker 1: the doctors had told him, how it had been detached
• 1:19:58
Speaker 1: and how it was loose, and by an ever of imagination,
• 1:20:01
Speaker 1: he tried to catch that kidney and to stop it,
• 1:20:03
Speaker 1: to strengthen it. So little was needed, he fancied, No,
• 1:20:09
Speaker 1: I'll go again to Pyotr Ivanovitch. This was the friend
• 1:20:12
Speaker 1: who had a friend a doctor. He rang, ordered the
• 1:20:16
Speaker 1: horse to be put in and got ready to go out.
• 1:20:20
Speaker 1: Where are you off to, Jean asked his wife with
• 1:20:23
Speaker 1: a peculiarly melancholy and exceptionally kind expression. This exceptionally kind
• 1:20:30
Speaker 1: expression exasperated him. He looked darkly at her. I want
• 1:20:35
Speaker 1: to see Pyotr Ivanovitch. He went to the friend who
• 1:20:39
Speaker 1: had a friend a doctor, and with him to the doctor's.
• 1:20:42
Speaker 1: He found him in and had a long conversation with him,
• 1:20:46
Speaker 1: reviewing the anatomical and physiological details of what, according to
• 1:20:50
Speaker 1: the doctor's view was taking place within him. He understood
• 1:20:54
Speaker 1: it all. It was just one thing, a little thing
• 1:20:57
Speaker 1: wrong with the intestinal appendix. At my all come right.
• 1:21:01
Speaker 1: Only strengthen one sluggish organ and decrease the undue activity
• 1:21:05
Speaker 1: of another, and absorption would take place, and all would
• 1:21:08
Speaker 1: be set right. He was a little late for dinner.
• 1:21:12
Speaker 1: He ate his dinner, talked cheerfully, but it was a
• 1:21:15
Speaker 1: long while before he could go to his own room
• 1:21:17
Speaker 1: to work. At last he went to his study and
• 1:21:20
Speaker 1: at once sat down to work. He read his legal
• 1:21:23
Speaker 1: documents and did his work. But the consciousness never left
• 1:21:27
Speaker 1: him of having a matter of importance very near to
• 1:21:29
Speaker 1: his heart, which he had put off, but would look
• 1:21:31
Speaker 1: into later. When he had finished his work, he remembered
• 1:21:35
Speaker 1: that the matter near his heart was thinking about the
• 1:21:38
Speaker 1: intestinal appendix, but he did not give himself up to it.
• 1:21:42
Speaker 1: He went into the drawing room to tea. There were visitors,
• 1:21:46
Speaker 1: and there was talking, playing on the piano and singing.
• 1:21:49
Speaker 1: There was the young examining magistrate, the desirable match for
• 1:21:53
Speaker 1: the daughter. Ivan Ilyitch spent the evening as Praskovya Fyodorovna
• 1:21:58
Speaker 1: observed in better spirits than in it of them, but
• 1:22:01
Speaker 1: he never forgot for an instant that he had the
• 1:22:03
Speaker 1: important matter of the intestinal appendix put off for consideration. Later,
• 1:22:09
Speaker 1: at eleven o'clock he said good night and went to
• 1:22:11
Speaker 1: his own room. He had slept alone since his illness,
• 1:22:14
Speaker 1: in a little room adjoining his study. He went in
• 1:22:18
Speaker 1: undressed and took up a novel of Zola, but did
• 1:22:21
Speaker 1: not read it. He felt a thinking, and in his
• 1:22:25
Speaker 1: imagination the desired recovery of the intestinal appendix had taken place.
• 1:22:30
Speaker 1: There had been absorption, rejection, re establishment of the regular action.
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: Why it's all simply that, he said to himself. One
• 1:22:41
Speaker 1: only wants to assist nature. He remembered the medicine, got up,
• 1:22:46
Speaker 1: took it, lay down on his back, watching for the
• 1:22:49
Speaker 1: medicine to act beneficially and overcome the pain. It's only
• 1:22:54
Speaker 1: to take it regularly and avoid injurious influences. Why already
• 1:22:59
Speaker 1: I feel rather better, much better. He began to feel
• 1:23:03
Speaker 1: his side. It was not painful to the touch. Yes,
• 1:23:08
Speaker 1: I don't feel it really much better already. He put
• 1:23:13
Speaker 1: out the candle and lay on his side. The appendix
• 1:23:17
Speaker 1: is getting better absorption. Suddenly he felt the familiar, old, dull,
• 1:23:24
Speaker 1: gnawing ache. Persistent quiet in earnest in his mouth, the
• 1:23:29
Speaker 1: same familiar loathsome taste, His heart sank, his brain felt
• 1:23:34
Speaker 1: dim misty, My god, My God, he said again again,
• 1:23:42
Speaker 1: And it will never cease. And suddenly the whole thing
• 1:23:46
Speaker 1: rose before him in quite a different aspect. Intestinal appendix, kidney.
• 1:23:52
Speaker 1: He said to himself. It's not a question of the appendix,
• 1:23:57
Speaker 1: not a question of the kidney, but of life and death. Yes,
• 1:24:01
Speaker 1: life has been, and now it's going going away, and
• 1:24:05
Speaker 1: I cannot stop it. Yes, why deceive myself? Isn't it
• 1:24:10
Speaker 1: obvious to every one except me that I'm dying? And
• 1:24:14
Speaker 1: it's only a question of weeks of days? And once
• 1:24:18
Speaker 1: perhaps there was light and now there is darkness. I
• 1:24:23
Speaker 1: was here and now I am going where. A cold
• 1:24:29
Speaker 1: chill ran over him, his breath stopped. He heard nothing
• 1:24:32
Speaker 1: but the throbbing of his heart. I shall be no
• 1:24:37
Speaker 1: more then what will there be? There'll be nothing? Where
• 1:24:42
Speaker 1: then shall I be when I'm no more? Can this
• 1:24:45
Speaker 1: be dying? No? I don't want to. He jumped up,
• 1:24:50
Speaker 1: tried to light the candle, and, fumbling with trembling hands,
• 1:24:53
Speaker 1: he dropped the candle and the candlestick on the floor
• 1:24:56
Speaker 1: and fell back again on the pillow. Why trouble, It
• 1:25:01
Speaker 1: doesn't matter, he said to himself, staring with open eyes
• 1:25:04
Speaker 1: into the darkness. Death, yes, death, And they, all of
• 1:25:11
Speaker 1: them don't understand and don't want to understand, and feel
• 1:25:14
Speaker 1: no pity. They are playing, he called, through the closed doors,
• 1:25:19
Speaker 1: the far away cadence of a voice and the accompaniment.
• 1:25:24
Speaker 1: They don't care. But they will die too, fools me
• 1:25:28
Speaker 1: sooner and them later. But it will be the same
• 1:25:30
Speaker 1: for them, and they are merry the beasts. Anger stifled him,
• 1:25:36
Speaker 1: and he was agonizingly, insufferably miserable. It cannot be that
• 1:25:42
Speaker 1: all men always have been doomed to this awful horror,
• 1:25:46
Speaker 1: he raised himself. There is something wrong in it. I
• 1:25:50
Speaker 1: must be calm. I must think it all over from
• 1:25:52
Speaker 1: the beginning. And then he began to consider, Yes, the
• 1:25:58
Speaker 1: beginning of my illness. I knocked my side, and I
• 1:26:02
Speaker 1: was just the same that day, and the days after
• 1:26:06
Speaker 1: it ached a little, and then more than doctor's than depression, misery,
• 1:26:11
Speaker 1: and again doctor's. And I've gone on getting closer and
• 1:26:15
Speaker 1: closer to the abyss strength, growing less nearer and nearer,
• 1:26:21
Speaker 1: And here I am wasting away. No light in my eyes.
• 1:26:27
Speaker 1: I think of how to cure the appendix. But this
• 1:26:30
Speaker 1: is death? Can it be death? Again? A horror came
• 1:26:35
Speaker 1: over him. Gasping for breath, he bent over, began feeling
• 1:26:39
Speaker 1: for the matches, and knocked his elbow against the bedside table.
• 1:26:43
Speaker 1: It was in his way and hurt him. He felt
• 1:26:46
Speaker 1: furious with it, and his anger. Knocked against it more
• 1:26:49
Speaker 1: violently and upset it, And in despair, breathless, he fell
• 1:26:54
Speaker 1: back on his spine, waiting for death to come that instant.
• 1:26:59
Speaker 1: The visitors were leap at that time. Praskovya Fyodorovna was
• 1:27:02
Speaker 1: seeing them out. She heard something fall and came in.
• 1:27:07
Speaker 1: What is it? Nothing, I dropped something by accident. She
• 1:27:13
Speaker 1: went out brought a candle. He was lying, breathing hard
• 1:27:17
Speaker 1: and fast, like a man who has run a mile,
• 1:27:20
Speaker 1: and staring with fixed eyes at her. What is it, Jean, Nothing,
• 1:27:27
Speaker 1: I say, I dropped something? Why speak? She won't understand,
• 1:27:32
Speaker 1: he thought, She certainly did not understand. She picked up
• 1:27:37
Speaker 1: the candle, lighted it for him, and went out hastily.
• 1:27:41
Speaker 1: She had to say good bye to a departing guest.
• 1:27:44
Speaker 1: When she came back, he was lying in the same
• 1:27:45
Speaker 1: position on its back, looking upwards. How are you worse? Yes,
• 1:27:54
Speaker 1: She shook her head, sat down. Do you know what, Jean,
• 1:27:59
Speaker 1: I wonder if we have and better send for Leshchititsky
• 1:28:01
Speaker 1: to see you here. This meant calling in the celebrated doctor,
• 1:28:06
Speaker 1: regardless of expense. He smiled malignantly and said no. She
• 1:28:12
Speaker 1: sat a moment longer, went up to him and kissed
• 1:28:14
Speaker 1: him on the forehead. He hated her with all the
• 1:28:17
Speaker 1: force of his soul when she was kissing him, and
• 1:28:20
Speaker 1: had to make an effort not to push her away.
• 1:28:24
Speaker 1: Good night, Please, God, you'll sleep yes. End of chapter five.
• 1:28:32
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch saw that he was dying and was in
• 1:28:35
Speaker 1: continual despair at the bottom of his heart. Ivan Ilyitch
• 1:28:39
Speaker 1: knew that he was dying, but so far from growing
• 1:28:42
Speaker 1: use to this idea, he simply did not grasp it.
• 1:28:46
Speaker 1: He was utterly unable to grasp it. The example of
• 1:28:50
Speaker 1: the syllogism that he had learned in Kysveter's logic, Kius
• 1:28:54
Speaker 1: is a man, men are mortal. Therefore Kius is mortal
• 1:28:58
Speaker 1: had seemed to him all his life, correct only as
• 1:29:01
Speaker 1: regards Caius, but not at all as regards himself. In
• 1:29:05
Speaker 1: that case, it was a question of Caius a man,
• 1:29:09
Speaker 1: an abstract man, and it was perfectly true. But he
• 1:29:12
Speaker 1: was not Caius, and was not an abstract man. He
• 1:29:16
Speaker 1: had always been a creature, quite quite different from all others.
• 1:29:20
Speaker 1: He had been little Vanya with a mamma and Papa,
• 1:29:23
Speaker 1: and Mitya and Volodya, with playthings, and a coachman and
• 1:29:26
Speaker 1: a nurse afterwards with Katenka, with all the joys and
• 1:29:30
Speaker 1: griefs and ecstasies of childhood, boyhood and youth. What did
• 1:29:35
Speaker 1: Caius know of the smell of the leathern ball Vanya
• 1:29:38
Speaker 1: had been so fond of. Had Caius kissed his mother's
• 1:29:42
Speaker 1: hand like that? Caius had not heard the silk rustle
• 1:29:45
Speaker 1: of his mother's skirts, He had not made a riot
• 1:29:48
Speaker 1: at school over the pudding. Had Caius been in love
• 1:29:52
Speaker 1: like that? Could Caius preside over the sittings of the court.
• 1:29:57
Speaker 1: And Caius certainly was mortal, and it was right for
• 1:30:00
Speaker 1: him to die. But for me, little Vanya ivan Ilyitch,
• 1:30:05
Speaker 1: with all my feelings and ideas. For me, it's a
• 1:30:08
Speaker 1: different matter. And it cannot be that I ought to die.
• 1:30:12
Speaker 1: That would be too awful. That was his feeling if
• 1:30:18
Speaker 1: I had to die like Caius, I should have known
• 1:30:21
Speaker 1: it was so. Some inner voice would have told me so.
• 1:30:25
Speaker 1: But there was nothing of the sword in me, and
• 1:30:27
Speaker 1: I and all my friends we felt that it was
• 1:30:29
Speaker 1: not at all the same as with Caius. And now
• 1:30:33
Speaker 1: here it is. He said to himself, it can't be,
• 1:30:39
Speaker 1: It can't be, But it is? How is it? How's
• 1:30:43
Speaker 1: one to understand it? And he could not conceive it?
• 1:30:46
Speaker 1: And tried to drive away this idea as faults, incorrect
• 1:30:50
Speaker 1: and morbid, and to supplant it by other correct, healthy ideas.
• 1:30:55
Speaker 1: But this idea, not as an idea merely, but as
• 1:30:58
Speaker 1: it were an actual fact, came back again and stood
• 1:31:01
Speaker 1: confronting him. And to replace this thought he called up
• 1:31:06
Speaker 1: other thoughts, one after another, in the hope of finding
• 1:31:09
Speaker 1: support in them. He tried to get back into former
• 1:31:12
Speaker 1: trains of thought, which in old days had screened off
• 1:31:15
Speaker 1: the thought of death. But strange to say, all that
• 1:31:19
Speaker 1: had in old days covered up, obliterated the sense of
• 1:31:22
Speaker 1: death could not now produce the same effect. Latterly, ivan
• 1:31:27
Speaker 1: Ilitch spent the greater part of his time in these
• 1:31:29
Speaker 1: efforts to restore his old trains of thought, which had
• 1:31:32
Speaker 1: shut off death. At one time he would say to himself,
• 1:31:37
Speaker 1: I'll put myself into my official work. Why I used
• 1:31:40
Speaker 1: to live in it, And he would go to the
• 1:31:42
Speaker 1: law courts, banishing every doubt. He would enter into conversation
• 1:31:46
Speaker 1: with his colleagues and would sit carelessly as his old
• 1:31:49
Speaker 1: habit was, scanning the crowd below dreamily, and with both
• 1:31:53
Speaker 1: his wasted hands, he would lean on the arms of
• 1:31:56
Speaker 1: the oak arm chair, just as he always did, and
• 1:31:59
Speaker 1: bending over to a colleague, passed the papers to him
• 1:32:02
Speaker 1: and whispered to him. Then, suddenly dropping his eyes and
• 1:32:05
Speaker 1: sitting up straight, he would pronounce the familiar words that
• 1:32:08
Speaker 1: opened the proceedings. But suddenly, in the middle, the pain
• 1:32:13
Speaker 1: in his side, utterly, regardless of the stage he had
• 1:32:16
Speaker 1: reached in his conduct of the case, began its work.
• 1:32:20
Speaker 1: It riveted ivan Ilyitch's attention. He drove away the thought
• 1:32:24
Speaker 1: of it, but it still did its work. And then
• 1:32:28
Speaker 1: it came and stood confronting him and looked at him,
• 1:32:32
Speaker 1: and he felt turned to stone, and the light dot
• 1:32:35
Speaker 1: away in his eyes, and he began to ask himself again,
• 1:32:40
Speaker 1: can it be that it is the only truth? And
• 1:32:44
Speaker 1: his colleagues and his subordinates saw with surprise and distress
• 1:32:48
Speaker 1: that he, the brilliant, subtle judge, was losing the thread
• 1:32:52
Speaker 1: of his speech, was making blunders. He shook himself, tried
• 1:32:56
Speaker 1: to regain his self control, and got somehow to the
• 1:33:00
Speaker 1: end of the sitting, and went home with the painful
• 1:33:02
Speaker 1: sense that his judicial labors could not, as of old,
• 1:33:06
Speaker 1: hide from him what he wanted to hide, that he
• 1:33:09
Speaker 1: could not, by means of his official work, escape from it.
• 1:33:14
Speaker 1: And the worst of it was that it drew him
• 1:33:16
Speaker 1: to itself, not for him to do anything in particular,
• 1:33:20
Speaker 1: but simply for him to look at it straight in
• 1:33:22
Speaker 1: the face, to look at it and doing nothing, suffer unspeakably,
• 1:33:28
Speaker 1: and to save himself from this, ivan Ilyitch sought amusements
• 1:33:32
Speaker 1: other screened, and these screens he found, and for a
• 1:33:36
Speaker 1: little while they did seem to save him. But soon
• 1:33:39
Speaker 1: again they were not so much broken down as let
• 1:33:42
Speaker 1: the light through, as though it pierced through everything, and
• 1:33:45
Speaker 1: there was nothing that could shut it off. Sometimes during
• 1:33:49
Speaker 1: those days he would go into the drawing room he
• 1:33:51
Speaker 1: had furnished, that drawing room where he had fallen, for
• 1:33:55
Speaker 1: which how bitterly ludicrous it was for him to think
• 1:33:58
Speaker 1: of it. For the decoration which he had sacrificed his
• 1:34:01
Speaker 1: life for. He knew that it was that bruise that
• 1:34:04
Speaker 1: had started his illness. He went in and saw that
• 1:34:08
Speaker 1: the polished table had been scratched by something. He looked
• 1:34:12
Speaker 1: for the cause and found it in the bronze clasps
• 1:34:14
Speaker 1: of the album, which had been twisted on one side.
• 1:34:18
Speaker 1: He took up the album, a costly one which he
• 1:34:20
Speaker 1: had himself arranged with loving care, and was vexed at
• 1:34:23
Speaker 1: the carelessness of his daughter and her friends. Here a
• 1:34:27
Speaker 1: page was torn. Here the photographs had been shifted out
• 1:34:30
Speaker 1: of their places. He carefully put it to rights again
• 1:34:34
Speaker 1: and bent the clasp back. Then the idea occurred to
• 1:34:38
Speaker 1: him to move all this etablisment of the albums to
• 1:34:41
Speaker 1: another corner where the flowers stood. He called the footman,
• 1:34:45
Speaker 1: or his daughter or his wife came to help him.
• 1:34:48
Speaker 1: They did not agree with him, contradicted him, he argued,
• 1:34:52
Speaker 1: got angry. But all that was very well, since he
• 1:34:55
Speaker 1: did not think of it. It was not in sight.
• 1:35:00
Speaker 1: But then his wife would say, as he moved something himself,
• 1:35:04
Speaker 1: do let the servants do it. You'll hurt yourself again.
• 1:35:07
Speaker 1: And all at once it peeped through the screen. He
• 1:35:10
Speaker 1: caught a glimpse of it. He caught a glimpse of it,
• 1:35:13
Speaker 1: but still he hoped it would hide itself involuntarily, though
• 1:35:17
Speaker 1: he kept watch on his side. There it is just
• 1:35:21
Speaker 1: the same, still aching still, and now he cannot forget it,
• 1:35:26
Speaker 1: and it is staring openly at him from behind the flowers.
• 1:35:30
Speaker 1: What's the use of it all? And it's the fact
• 1:35:34
Speaker 1: that here at that curtain, as if it had been
• 1:35:37
Speaker 1: storming a fort I lost my life. Is it possible?
• 1:35:43
Speaker 1: How awful and how silly it cannot be? It cannot be,
• 1:35:49
Speaker 1: And it is. He went into his own room, lay down,
• 1:35:55
Speaker 1: and was again alone with it, face to face with it,
• 1:36:00
Speaker 1: and nothing to be done with it, nothing but to
• 1:36:04
Speaker 1: look at it and shiver. End of Chapter six. How
• 1:36:10
Speaker 1: it came to pass during the third month of ivan
• 1:36:12
Speaker 1: Ilyitch's illness, It would be impossible to say, for it
• 1:36:15
Speaker 1: happened little by little, imperceptibly. But it had come to
• 1:36:19
Speaker 1: pass that his wife and his daughter, and his son,
• 1:36:21
Speaker 1: and their servants and their acquaintances, and the doctors, and
• 1:36:25
Speaker 1: most of all he himself, all were aware that all
• 1:36:28
Speaker 1: interest in him for other people consisted. Now in the
• 1:36:31
Speaker 1: question how soon he would leave his place empty, free
• 1:36:34
Speaker 1: the living from the constraint of his presence, and be
• 1:36:36
Speaker 1: set free himself from his sufferings. He slept less and less.
• 1:36:42
Speaker 1: They gave him opium and began to inject morphine, but
• 1:36:45
Speaker 1: this did not relieve him. The dull pain he experienced
• 1:36:49
Speaker 1: in the half asleep condition at first only relieved him
• 1:36:52
Speaker 1: as a change, but then it became as bad or
• 1:36:55
Speaker 1: even more agonizing than the open pain. He had special
• 1:37:00
Speaker 1: things to eat prepared for him according to the doctor's prescriptions,
• 1:37:03
Speaker 1: but these dishes became more and more distasteful, more and
• 1:37:06
Speaker 1: more revolting to him. Special arrangements, too, had to be
• 1:37:10
Speaker 1: made for his other physical needs, and this was a
• 1:37:13
Speaker 1: continual misery to him, misery from the uncleanliness, the unseemliness,
• 1:37:18
Speaker 1: and the stench, from the feeling of another person having
• 1:37:21
Speaker 1: to assist in it. But just from this most unpleasant
• 1:37:25
Speaker 1: side of his illness there came comfort to Ivan Ilyitch
• 1:37:29
Speaker 1: there always came into his room on these occasions to
• 1:37:31
Speaker 1: clear up for him. The peasant who waited at table
• 1:37:33
Speaker 1: Ghiassim Garassim was a clean, fresh, young peasant who had
• 1:37:38
Speaker 1: grown stout and hearty on the good fare in town,
• 1:37:41
Speaker 1: always cheerful and bright. At first, the sight of this lad,
• 1:37:45
Speaker 1: always cleanly dressed in the Russian style, engaged in this
• 1:37:48
Speaker 1: revolting task, embarrassed ivan Ilyitch one day, getting up from
• 1:37:53
Speaker 1: the night stool, too weak to replace his clothes, he
• 1:37:56
Speaker 1: dropped onto a soft low chair and looked with horror
• 1:37:59
Speaker 1: at his bare, powerless thighs, with the muscles so sharply
• 1:38:03
Speaker 1: standing out on them. Then there came in, with light,
• 1:38:07
Speaker 1: strong steps, Gerassim in his thick boots, diffusing a pleasant
• 1:38:11
Speaker 1: smell of tar from his boots and bringing in the
• 1:38:13
Speaker 1: freshness of the winter air, wearing a clean hempen apron
• 1:38:17
Speaker 1: and a clean cotton shirt, with his sleeves tucked up
• 1:38:20
Speaker 1: on his strong, bare young arms. Without looking at ivan Ilyitch,
• 1:38:24
Speaker 1: obviously trying to check the radiant happiness in his face
• 1:38:27
Speaker 1: so as not to hurt the sick man, he went
• 1:38:30
Speaker 1: up to the night stool, Garassim, said ivan Ilyitch faintly.
• 1:38:37
Speaker 1: Garassim started, clearly afraid that he had done something amiss,
• 1:38:41
Speaker 1: and with a rapid movement, turned towards the sick man,
• 1:38:43
Speaker 1: his fresh, good natured, simple young face just beginning to
• 1:38:47
Speaker 1: be downy with the first growth of beard. Yes, your honor,
• 1:38:53
Speaker 1: I am afraid this is very disagreeable for you. You
• 1:38:56
Speaker 1: must excuse me. I can't help it. Why upon my word, sir,
• 1:39:02
Speaker 1: And Garossim's eyes beamed and he showed his white, young
• 1:39:05
  Speaker 1: teeth in a smile. What's a little trouble. It's a
• 1:39:09
Speaker 1: case of illness with you, sir. And with his deft
• 1:39:12
Speaker 1: strong arms, he performed his habitual task and went out,
• 1:39:15
Speaker 1: stepping lightly, and five minutes later, treading just as lightly,
• 1:39:19
Speaker 1: he came back. Yvann Ilitch was still sitting in the
• 1:39:23
Speaker 1: same way in the arm chair. Garossim, he said, when
• 1:39:28
Speaker 1: the latter had replaced the night stool, all sweet and clean,
• 1:39:32
Speaker 1: Please help me come here. Garossim went up to him.
• 1:39:37
Speaker 1: Lift me up. It's difficult for me alone, and I've
• 1:39:40
Speaker 1: sent Dmitri away. Garossim went up to him as lightly
• 1:39:45
Speaker 1: as he stepped. He put his strong arms round him,
• 1:39:47
Speaker 1: deftly and gently lifted and supported him. With the other hand,
• 1:39:51
Speaker 1: pulled up his trousers and would have set him down again,
• 1:39:55
Speaker 1: but yvan Ilitch asked him to carry him to the sofa. Garossim,
• 1:39:59
Speaker 1: with effort, carefully not squeezing him, led him almost carrying
• 1:40:04
Speaker 1: him to the sofa and settled him there. Thank you
• 1:40:09
Speaker 1: how neatly and well you do everything. Goosim smiled again
• 1:40:14
Speaker 1: and would have gone away, but ivan Ilyitch felt his
• 1:40:17
Speaker 1: presence such a comfort that he was reluctant to let
• 1:40:20
Speaker 1: him go. Oh, move that chair near me. Please know
• 1:40:25
Speaker 1: that one under my legs. I feel easier when my
• 1:40:28
Speaker 1: legs are higher. Garosim picked up the chair and, without
• 1:40:33
Speaker 1: letting it knock, set it gently down on the ground
• 1:40:36
Speaker 1: just at the right place, and lifted ivan Ilyitch's legs
• 1:40:39
Speaker 1: on to it. It seemed to ivan Ilyitch that he
• 1:40:42
Speaker 1: was easier just at the moment when Garasim lifted his
• 1:40:44
Speaker 1: legs higher. I'm better when my legs are higher, said
• 1:40:50
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch. Put that cushion under me. Goosim did so again.
• 1:40:57
Speaker 1: He lifted his legs to put the cushion under him again.
• 1:41:00
Speaker 1: It seemed to ivan Ilyitch that he was easier at
• 1:41:02
Speaker 1: that moment when Garossim held his legs raised. When he
• 1:41:06
Speaker 1: laid them down again, he felt worse. Garossim, He said
• 1:41:11
Speaker 1: to him, are you busy just now? Not at all, sir,
• 1:41:16
Speaker 1: said Garossim, who had learned among the town bred servants,
• 1:41:19
Speaker 1: how to speak to gentlefolks. What have you left to do? Why?
• 1:41:26
Speaker 1: What have I to do? I've done everything. There's only
• 1:41:28
Speaker 1: the wood to chop for tomorrow. Then hold my legs
• 1:41:33
Speaker 1: up like that? Can you to be sure? I can?
• 1:41:37
Speaker 1: Garossim lifted the legs up, and it seemed to ivan
• 1:41:40
Speaker 1: Ilyitch that in that position he did not feel the
• 1:41:43
Speaker 1: pain at all. But how about the wood? Don't you
• 1:41:49
Speaker 1: trouble about that, sir? We shall have time enough. Ivan
• 1:41:53
Speaker 1: Ilyitch made Girasim sit and hold his legs and began
• 1:41:56
Speaker 1: to talk to him, and strange to say, he fancied
• 1:41:59
Speaker 1: he felt better while Garassim had hold of his legs.
• 1:42:03
Speaker 1: From that time forward, ivan Ilitch would sometimes call Garassim
• 1:42:07
Speaker 1: and get him to hold his legs on his shoulders,
• 1:42:09
Speaker 1: and he liked talking with him. Garossim did this easily, readily, simply,
• 1:42:14
Speaker 1: and with a good nature that touched ivan Ilyitch health,
• 1:42:18
Speaker 1: strength and heartiness, and all other people were offensive to
• 1:42:21
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch, But the strength and hardiness of Garassim did
• 1:42:25
Speaker 1: not mortify him, but soothed him. Ivan Ilyitch's great misery
• 1:42:30
Speaker 1: was due to the deception that, for some reason or other,
• 1:42:32
Speaker 1: every one kept up with him that he was simply
• 1:42:35
Speaker 1: ill and not dying, and that he need only keep
• 1:42:37
Speaker 1: quiet and follow the doctor's orders, and then some great
• 1:42:40
Speaker 1: change for the better would be the result. He knew
• 1:42:43
Speaker 1: that whatever they might do, there would be no result
• 1:42:46
Speaker 1: except more agonizing sufferings in death, and he was made
• 1:42:50
Speaker 1: miserable by this lie, made miserable at their refusing to
• 1:42:53
Speaker 1: acknowledge what they all knew, and he knew by their
• 1:42:56
Speaker 1: persisting in lying over him about his awful position, and
• 1:43:00
Speaker 1: in forcing him too to take part in this lie. Lying. Lying.
• 1:43:05
Speaker 1: This lying carried on over him on the eve of
• 1:43:08
Speaker 1: his death, and destined to bring that terrible solemn act
• 1:43:11
Speaker 1: of his death down to the level of all their
• 1:43:14
Speaker 1: visits curtains sturgeons for dinner was a horrible agony for
• 1:43:18
Speaker 1: Ivan ilyitch, and strange to say, many times, when they
• 1:43:23
Speaker 1: had been going through the regular performance over him, he
• 1:43:25
Speaker 1: had been within a hair's breadth of screaming at them,
• 1:43:28
Speaker 1: cease your lying. You know, and I know that I'm dying,
• 1:43:32
Speaker 1: so do at least give over lying. But he had
• 1:43:36
Speaker 1: never had the spirit to do this. The terrible, awful
• 1:43:39
Speaker 1: act of his dying was he saw by all those
• 1:43:42
Speaker 1: about him brought down to the level of a casual,
• 1:43:45
Speaker 1: unpleasant and to some extent indecorous incident, somewhat as they
• 1:43:49
Speaker 1: would behave with a person who should enter a drawing
• 1:43:51
Speaker 1: room smelling unpleasant. It was brought down to this level
• 1:43:55
Speaker 1: by that very decorum to which he had been enslaved
• 1:43:58
Speaker 1: all his life. He saw that no one felt for him,
• 1:44:01
Speaker 1: because no one would even grasp his position. Garossim was
• 1:44:05
Speaker 1: the only person who recognized the position and felt sorry
• 1:44:08
Speaker 1: for him, and that was why ivan Ilyitch was only
• 1:44:11
Speaker 1: at ease with Garassim. He felt comforted when Garossim sometimes
• 1:44:15
Speaker 1: supported his legs for whole nights at a stretch and
• 1:44:18
Speaker 1: would not go away to bed, saying don't you worry yourself,
• 1:44:21
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch, I'll get sleep enough yet, or when suddenly
• 1:44:25
Speaker 1: dropping into the familiar peasant forms of speech, he added,
• 1:44:30
Speaker 1: if thou wern't sick, but as tis twould be strange
• 1:44:33
Speaker 1: if I didn't wait on thee. Garossim alone did not lie.
• 1:44:39
Speaker 1: Everything showed clearly that he alone understood what it meant
• 1:44:42
Speaker 1: and saw no necessity to disguise it, and simply felt
• 1:44:45
Speaker 1: sorry for his sick, wasting master. He even said this
• 1:44:49
Speaker 1: once straight out when ivan Ilitch was sending him away.
• 1:44:54
Speaker 1: We shall all die, so what's a little trouble, he said,
• 1:44:57
Speaker 1: meaning by this to express that he did not complain
• 1:44:59
Speaker 1: of the trouble, just because he was taking this trouble
• 1:45:02
Speaker 1: for a dying man, and he hoped that for him too,
• 1:45:05
Speaker 1: some one would be willing to take the same trouble
• 1:45:07
Speaker 1: when his time came. Apart from this deception or in
• 1:45:12
Speaker 1: consequence of it, what made the greatest misery for ivan
• 1:45:15
Speaker 1: Ilyitch was that no one felt for him as he
• 1:45:17
Speaker 1: would have liked them to feel for him. At certain
• 1:45:20
Speaker 1: moments after prolonged suffering, ivan Ilyitch, ashamed as he would
• 1:45:24
Speaker 1: have been to own it, longed more than anything for
• 1:45:27
Speaker 1: some one to feel sorry for him as for a
• 1:45:29
Speaker 1: sick child. He longed to be petted, kissed, and wept
• 1:45:33
Speaker 1: over as children are petted and comforted. He knew that
• 1:45:37
Speaker 1: he was an important member of the law courts, that
• 1:45:39
Speaker 1: he had a beard turning gray, and that therefore it
• 1:45:42
Speaker 1: was impossible, but still he longed for it, and in
• 1:45:46
Speaker 1: his relations with Garassim, there was something approaching to that,
• 1:45:50
Speaker 1: and that was why being with Garossim was a comfort
• 1:45:53
Speaker 1: to him. Ivan Ilyitch longs to weep, longs to be petted,
• 1:45:57
Speaker 1: and wept over. And then there comes in a colleague, Schebek,
• 1:46:01
Speaker 1: and instead of weeping and being petted, ivan Ilyitch puts
• 1:46:04
Speaker 1: on his serious, severe, earnest face, and from mere inertia
• 1:46:09
Speaker 1: gives his views on the effect of the last decision
• 1:46:11
Speaker 1: in the Court of Appeal, and obstinately insists upon them.
• 1:46:16
Speaker 1: This falsity around him and within him did more than
• 1:46:18
Speaker 1: anything to poison ivan Ilyitch's last days. End of chapter seven.
• 1:46:25
Speaker 1: It was morning. All that made it morning for ivan
• 1:46:28
Speaker 1: Ilyitch was that Gerassim had gone away, and Pyotr the
• 1:46:31
Speaker 1: footman had come in. He had put out the candles,
• 1:46:34
Speaker 1: opened one of the curtains, and begun surreptitiously setting the
• 1:46:37
Speaker 1: room to rights. Whether it were morning or evening, Friday
• 1:46:41
Speaker 1: or Sunday, it all made no difference. It was always
• 1:46:44
Speaker 1: just the same thing, gnawing, agonizing pain, never ceasing for
• 1:46:49
Speaker 1: an instant, the hopeless sense of life always ebbing away
• 1:46:53
Speaker 1: but still not yet gone, always swooping down on him,
• 1:46:56
Speaker 1: that fearful, hated death which was the only reality, and
• 1:47:00
Speaker 1: always the same falsity. What were days or weeks or
• 1:47:04
Speaker 1: hours of the day to him. Will you have tea? Sir?
• 1:47:10
Speaker 1: He wants things done in their regular order in the morning.
• 1:47:13
Speaker 1: The family should have tea, he thought, and only said no.
• 1:47:19
Speaker 1: Would you care to move on to the sofa? He
• 1:47:22
Speaker 1: wants to make the room tidy and I'm in his way.
• 1:47:25
Speaker 1: I'm uncleanness disorder, he thought, and only said no, leave
• 1:47:31
Speaker 1: me alone. The servant still moved busily about his work.
• 1:47:36
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch stretched out his hand. Peotr went up to
• 1:47:39
Speaker 1: offer his services. What can I get you my watch?
• 1:47:45
Speaker 1: Peotr got out the watch, which lay just under his hand,
• 1:47:48
Speaker 1: and gave it him. Half past eight Are they up?
• 1:47:54
Speaker 1: Not yet, Sir. Vladimir Ivanovitch, that was his son has
• 1:47:58
Speaker 1: gone to the high school and prescott Ya Fyodorovna gave
• 1:48:01
Speaker 1: orders that she was to be waked if you asked
• 1:48:03
Speaker 1: for her. Shall I send word? No, no need. Should
• 1:48:08
Speaker 1: I try some tea? He thought, yes, tea, bring it.
• 1:48:15
Speaker 1: Pyotr was on his way out. Ivan Ilyitch felt frightened
• 1:48:19
Speaker 1: of being left alone. How keep him? Oh the medicine, Pyotr,
• 1:48:26
Speaker 1: give me my medicine. Oh well, maybe medicine may still
• 1:48:30
Speaker 1: be some good. He took the spoon drank it. No,
• 1:48:37
Speaker 1: it does no good. It's all rubbish deception, he decided,
• 1:48:41
Speaker 1: as soon as he tasted the familiar, mawkish, hopeless taste. No,
• 1:48:46
Speaker 1: I can't believe it now. But the pain, why this pain?
• 1:48:51
Speaker 1: If it would only cease for a minute, and he groaned,
• 1:48:55
Speaker 1: Pyotr turned round, No, go on, bring the tea. Pyotr
• 1:49:03
Speaker 1: went away. Ivan Ilyitch left alone, moaned, not so much
• 1:49:07
Speaker 1: from the pain, awful as it was as from misery,
• 1:49:12
Speaker 1: always the same thing, again and again, all these endless
• 1:49:15
Speaker 1: days and nights. If it would only be quicker, quicker
• 1:49:20
Speaker 1: to what? Death? Darkness? No, no, anything better than death.
• 1:49:28
Speaker 1: When Pyotr came in with the tea on a tray,
• 1:49:30
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch stared for some time, absent mindedly at him,
• 1:49:34
Speaker 1: not grasping who he was and what he wanted. Pyotr
• 1:49:38
Speaker 1: was disconcerted by this stare, and when he showed he
• 1:49:41
Speaker 1: was disconcerted, ivan Ilyitch came to himself. Oh yes, he said,
• 1:49:49
Speaker 1: tea good, set it down. Only help me to wash
• 1:49:53
Speaker 1: and put on a clean shirt, and ivan Ilyitch began
• 1:49:57
Speaker 1: his washing. He washed his hands slowly and then his face,
• 1:50:01
Speaker 1: cleaned his teeth, combed his hair, and looked in the
• 1:50:04
Speaker 1: looking glass He felt frightened at what he saw, especially
• 1:50:08
Speaker 1: at the way his hair clung limply to his pale
• 1:50:11
Speaker 1: forehead when his shirt was being changed. He knew he
• 1:50:14
Speaker 1: would be still more terrified if he glanced at his body,
• 1:50:17
Speaker 1: and he avoided looking at himself. But at last it
• 1:50:21
Speaker 1: was all over. He put on his dressing gown, covered
• 1:50:24
Speaker 1: himself with a rug, and sat in the arm chair
• 1:50:26
Speaker 1: to drink his tea. For one moment he felt refreshed,
• 1:50:31
Speaker 1: but as soon as he began to drink the tea again,
• 1:50:33
Speaker 1: there was the same taste, the same pain. He forced
• 1:50:38
Speaker 1: himself to finish it and lay down, stretching out his legs.
• 1:50:42
Speaker 1: He lay down and dismissed pyotr. Always the same. A
• 1:50:47
Speaker 1: gleam of hope flashes for a moment, and then again
• 1:50:50
Speaker 1: the sea of despair roars about him again, and always pain,
• 1:50:55
Speaker 1: always pain, always heartache, and always the same thing. Alone,
• 1:51:01
Speaker 1: it is awfully dreary. He longs to call some one,
• 1:51:04
Speaker 1: but he knows beforehand that with others present it will
• 1:51:07
Speaker 1: be worse. Morphine again, only to forget again. I'll tell
• 1:51:14
Speaker 1: him the doctor that he must think of something else.
• 1:51:17
Speaker 1: It can't go on, It can't go on. Like this,
• 1:51:23
Speaker 1: one hour, two hours pass like this. Then there is
• 1:51:27
Speaker 1: a ring at the front door. The doctor. Perhaps, yes,
• 1:51:31
Speaker 1: it is the doctor, fresh, hearty, fat and cheerful, wearing
• 1:51:35
Speaker 1: that expression that seems to say you there are in
• 1:51:39
Speaker 1: a panic about something, but will soon set things right
• 1:51:41
Speaker 1: for you. The doctor is aware that this expression is
• 1:51:45
Speaker 1: hardly fitting here, but he has put it on once
• 1:51:48
Speaker 1: and for all and can't take it off, like a
• 1:51:50
Speaker 1: man who has put on a frock coat to pay
• 1:51:52
Speaker 1: a round of calls. In a hearty, reassuring manner, the
• 1:51:56
Speaker 1: doctor rubs his hands. I'm it's a sharp frost. Just
• 1:52:02
Speaker 1: let me warm myself, he says, with an expression as
• 1:52:05
Speaker 1: though it's only a matter of waiting a little till
• 1:52:07
Speaker 1: he's warm, and as soon as he's warm, he'll set
• 1:52:10
Speaker 1: everything to rights. Well, now, how are you? If an
• 1:52:16
Speaker 1: ilyitch feels that the doctor would like to say how's
• 1:52:19
Speaker 1: the little trouble, but that he feels that he can't
• 1:52:21
Speaker 1: talk like that, and says, how did you pass the night?
• 1:52:26
Speaker 1: If an ilyitch looks at the doctor with an expression
• 1:52:28
Speaker 1: that asks, is it possible? You're never ashamed of lying?
• 1:52:33
Speaker 1: But the doctor does not care to understand this look.
• 1:52:36
Speaker 1: And if an Ilitch says, it's always just as awful.
• 1:52:41
Speaker 1: The pain never leaves me, never ceases. If only there
• 1:52:45
Speaker 1: were something. Ah, you're all like that. All sick people
• 1:52:50
Speaker 1: say that. Come now, I do believe I'm thawed, even
• 1:52:54
Speaker 1: Praskovya Fyodorovna, who so particular could find no fault with
• 1:52:58
Speaker 1: my temperature. Well, well, now I can say good morning,
• 1:53:02
Speaker 1: and the doctor shakes hands and dropping his former levity.
• 1:53:06
Speaker 1: The doctor, with a serious face, proceeds to examine the patient,
• 1:53:10
Speaker 1: feeling his pulse to take his temperature, and then the
• 1:53:12
Speaker 1: tappings and soundings begin. Ivan Ilyitch knows positively and indubitably
• 1:53:19
Speaker 1: that it's all nonsense and empty deception. But when the doctor,
• 1:53:22
Speaker 1: kneeling down, stretches over him, putting his ear first higher,
• 1:53:26
Speaker 1: then lower, and goes through various gymnastic evolutions over him
• 1:53:30
Speaker 1: with a serious face, ivan Ilyitch is affected by this,
• 1:53:34
Speaker 1: as he used sometimes to be affected by the speeches
• 1:53:36
Speaker 1: of the lawyers in court, though he was perfectly well
• 1:53:39
Speaker 1: aware that they were telling lies all while and why
• 1:53:42
Speaker 1: they were telling lies. The doctor, kneeling on the sofa
• 1:53:47
Speaker 1: was still sounding him. When there was the rustle of
• 1:53:49
Speaker 1: Praskovya Fyodorovna's silk dress in the doorway, and she was
• 1:53:53
Speaker 1: heard scolding Peotr for not having let her know that
• 1:53:55
Speaker 1: the doctor had come. She comes in, kisses her husband,
• 1:53:59
Speaker 1: and when it once begins to explain that she has
• 1:54:02
Speaker 1: been up a long while, and that it was only
• 1:54:04
Speaker 1: through a misunderstanding that she was not there when the
• 1:54:06
Speaker 1: doctor came. Ivan Ilyitch looks at her, scans her all over,
• 1:54:12
Speaker 1: and sets down against her, her whiteness and plumpness, and
• 1:54:15
Speaker 1: the cleanness of her hands and neck, and the glossiness
• 1:54:18
Speaker 1: of her hair, and the gleam full of life in
• 1:54:21
Speaker 1: her eyes. With all the force of his soul, he
• 1:54:24
Speaker 1: hates her, and when she touches him, it makes him
• 1:54:27
Speaker 1: suffer from the thrill of hatred he feels for her.
• 1:54:32
Speaker 1: Her attitude to him and his illness is still the same.
• 1:54:35
Speaker 1: Just as the doctor had taken up a certain line
• 1:54:38
Speaker 1: with the patient which he was now not able to drop,
• 1:54:40
Speaker 1: so she too had taken up a line with him
• 1:54:43
Speaker 1: that he was not doing something he ought to do,
• 1:54:46
Speaker 1: and was himself to blame. And she was lovingly reproaching
• 1:54:49
Speaker 1: him for his neglect, And she could not now get
• 1:54:52
Speaker 1: out of this attitude. Why you know he won't listen
• 1:54:57
Speaker 1: to me, he doesn't take his medicine at the right times,
• 1:55:00
Speaker 1: and what's worse still, he insists on lying in a
• 1:55:03
Speaker 1: position that surely must be bad for him, with his
• 1:55:06
Speaker 1: legs in the air. She described how he made Gerassim
• 1:55:10
Speaker 1: hold his legs up. The doctor smiled with kindly condescension
• 1:55:15
Speaker 1: that said, oh well, it can't be helped. These sick
• 1:55:18
Speaker 1: people do take up such foolish fancies, but we must
• 1:55:21
Speaker 1: forgive them. When the examination was over, the doctor looked
• 1:55:26
Speaker 1: at his watch, and then Praskovya Fyodorovna informed ivan Ilyitch
• 1:55:29
Speaker 1: that it must, of course be as he liked, but
• 1:55:32
Speaker 1: she had sent to day for a celebrated doctor, and
• 1:55:34
Speaker 1: that he would examine him and have a consultation with
• 1:55:37
Speaker 1: Mihail d Nilovitch that was the name of their regular doctor.
• 1:55:42
Speaker 1: Don't oppose it now, please, this I'm doing entirely for
• 1:55:45
Speaker 1: my own sake, she said, ironically, meaning it to be
• 1:55:49
Speaker 1: understood that she was doing it all for his sake
• 1:55:52
Speaker 1: and was only saying this to give him no right
• 1:55:54
Speaker 1: to refuse her request. He lay silent, knitting his brows,
• 1:56:00
Speaker 1: felt that he was hemmed in by such a tangle
• 1:56:02
Speaker 1: of falsity that it was hard to disentangle anything from it.
• 1:56:06
Speaker 1: Everything she did for him was entirely for her own sake,
• 1:56:10
Speaker 1: and she told him she was doing for her own
• 1:56:12
Speaker 1: sake what she actually was doing for her own sake
• 1:56:15
Speaker 1: as something so incredible that he would take it as
• 1:56:17
Speaker 1: meaning the opposite. At half past eleven, the celebrated doctor
• 1:56:22
Speaker 1: came again, came the sounding and the grave conversation in
• 1:56:26
Speaker 1: his presence and in the other room about the kidney
• 1:56:29
Speaker 1: and the appendix, and questions and answers with such an
• 1:56:32
Speaker 1: air of significance that again, instead of the real question
• 1:56:36
Speaker 1: of life and death, which was now the only one
• 1:56:39
Speaker 1: that confronted him, the question that came uppermost was of
• 1:56:42
Speaker 1: the kidney and the appendix, which were doing something not
• 1:56:45
Speaker 1: as they ought to do, and were for that reason
• 1:56:48
Speaker 1: being attacked by Mihail d Nilovitch and the celebrated doctor
• 1:56:51
Speaker 1: and forced to mend their ways. The celebrated doctor took
• 1:56:56
Speaker 1: leave of him with a serious but not a hopeless face,
• 1:57:00
Speaker 1: and to the timid question that ivan Ilyitch addressed to
• 1:57:03
Speaker 1: him while he lifted his eyes shining with terror and hope,
• 1:57:06
Speaker 1: up towards him, was there a chance of recovery. He
• 1:57:11
Speaker 1: answered that he could not answer for it, but that
• 1:57:13
Speaker 1: there was a chance. The look of hope with which
• 1:57:17
Speaker 1: ivan Ilyitch watched the doctor out was so piteous that
• 1:57:21
Speaker 1: seeing it, Praskovyafyorovna positively burst into tears as she went
• 1:57:25
Speaker 1: out of the door to hand the celebrated doctor his fee.
• 1:57:28
Speaker 1: In the next room, the gleam of hope, kindled by
• 1:57:32
Speaker 1: the doctor's assurance, did not last long. Again, the same room,
• 1:57:37
Speaker 1: the same pictures, the curtains, the wall paper, the medicine bottles,
• 1:57:41
Speaker 1: and ever the same. His aching, suffering body, and ivan
• 1:57:46
Speaker 1: Ilyitch began to moan. They gave him injections, and he
• 1:57:50
Speaker 1: sank into oblivion. When he waked up, it was getting dark.
• 1:57:54
Speaker 1: They brought him his dinner. He forced himself to eat
• 1:57:57
Speaker 1: some broth, and again every everything the same, and again
• 1:58:02
Speaker 1: the coming night, after dinner, at seven o'clock, Praskovya Fyodorovna
• 1:58:07
Speaker 1: came into his room, dressed as though to go to
• 1:58:10
Speaker 1: a soiree, with her full bosom laced in tight and
• 1:58:13
Speaker 1: traces of powder on her face. She had in the
• 1:58:16
Speaker 1: morning mentioned to him that they were going to the theater.
• 1:58:19
Speaker 1: Sarah Bernhardt was visiting the town, and they had a box,
• 1:58:22
Speaker 1: which he had insisted on their taking. By now he
• 1:58:26
Speaker 1: had forgotten about it, and her smart attire was an
• 1:58:28
Speaker 1: offense to him, But he concealed this feeling when he
• 1:58:32
Speaker 1: recollected that he had himself insisted on their taking a
• 1:58:35
Speaker 1: box in going because it was an esthetic pleasure, beneficial
• 1:58:39
Speaker 1: and instructive for the children. Praskovya Fyodorovna came in satisfied
• 1:58:44
Speaker 1: with herself, but yet with something of a guilty air.
• 1:58:48
Speaker 1: She sat down, asked how he was, as he saw,
• 1:58:52
Speaker 1: simply for the sake of asking, and not for the
• 1:58:54
Speaker 1: sake of learning anything, knowing indeed that there was nothing
• 1:58:58
Speaker 1: to learn, and began tell him how absolutely necessary it was,
• 1:59:02
Speaker 1: how she would not have gone for anything but the
• 1:59:05
Speaker 1: box had been taken, and Ellen, their daughter, and Petrushchev,
• 1:59:09
Speaker 1: the examining lawyer, the daughter's suitor, were going, and that
• 1:59:12
Speaker 1: it was out of the question to let them go alone,
• 1:59:16
Speaker 1: but that she would have liked much better to stay
• 1:59:17
Speaker 1: with him, if only he would be sure to follow
• 1:59:20
Speaker 1: the doctor's prescription while she was away. Oh, and Fyodor Dmitrievitch,
• 1:59:26
Speaker 1: the suitor, would like to come in May He and
• 1:59:29
Speaker 1: Liza yes, let them come in. The daughter came in
• 1:59:36
Speaker 1: full dress, her fresh young body bare, while his body
• 1:59:40
Speaker 1: made him suffer so but she made a show of it.
• 1:59:44
Speaker 1: She was strong, healthy, obviously in love, and impatient of
• 1:59:48
Speaker 1: the illness, suffering and death that hindered her happiness. Fyodr
• 1:59:53
Speaker 1: Dmitrievitch came in too, an evening dress, his hair curled
• 1:59:57
Speaker 1: a la capool, with his long sinewy neck tightly fenced
• 2:00:00
Speaker 1: round by a white collar, with his vast expanse of
• 2:00:03
Speaker 1: white chest and strong thighs displayed in narrow black trousers,
• 2:00:08
Speaker 1: with one white glove in his hand and a crush
• 2:00:10
Speaker 1: opera hat behind him, crept in unnoticed the little high
• 2:00:15
Speaker 1: school boy in his new uniform, poor fellow in gloves
• 2:00:18
Speaker 1: and with that awful blue ring under his eyes that
• 2:00:21
Speaker 1: ivan Ilitch knew the meaning of. He always felt sorry
• 2:00:26
Speaker 1: for his son and pitiable. Indeed was his scared face
• 2:00:30
Speaker 1: of sympathetic suffering. Except Garassim. Ivan Ilyitch fancied that the
• 2:00:35
Speaker 1: laudio was the only one that understood and was sorry.
• 2:00:40
Speaker 1: They all sat down again. They asked how he was.
• 2:00:44
Speaker 1: A silence followed. Lisa asked her mother about the opera glass.
• 2:00:49
Speaker 1: An altercation ensued between the mother and daughter as to
• 2:00:52
Speaker 1: who had taken it and where it had been put.
• 2:00:55
Speaker 1: It turned into an unpleasant squabble. Fyodordmtroevitch asked ivan Ilyitch
• 2:01:01
Speaker 1: whether he had seen Sarah Bernhardt. Ivan Ilyitch could not
• 2:01:05
Speaker 1: at first catch the question that was asked him, but
• 2:01:08
Speaker 1: then he said, no, have you seen her before? Yes,
• 2:01:14
Speaker 1: in Adrienne la Gavoux. Praskovya Fyorovna observed that she was
• 2:01:19
Speaker 1: particularly good in that part. The daughter made some reply.
• 2:01:24
Speaker 1: A conversation sprang up about the art and naturalness of
• 2:01:27
Speaker 1: her acting, that conversation that is continually repeated and always
• 2:01:31
Speaker 1: the same. In the middle of the conversation, Fyodor Dmitrievitch
• 2:01:36
Speaker 1: glanced at ivan Ilyitch and relapsed into silence. The others
• 2:01:40
Speaker 1: looked at him and became mute too. Ivan Ilyitch was
• 2:01:43
Speaker 1: staring with glittering eyes straight before him, obviously furious with them.
• 2:01:49
Speaker 1: This had to be set right, but it could not
• 2:01:51
Speaker 1: anyhow be set right. This silence had somehow to be broken.
• 2:01:57
Speaker 1: No one would venture on breaking it, and all began
• 2:01:59
Speaker 1: to feel alarmed that the decorous deception was somehow breaking
• 2:02:03
Speaker 1: down and the facts would be exposed to all. Lisa
• 2:02:07
Speaker 1: was the first to pluck up courage. She broke the silence.
• 2:02:11
Speaker 1: She tried to cover up what they were all feeling,
• 2:02:14
Speaker 1: but inadvertently she gave it utterance. If we are going though,
• 2:02:19
Speaker 1: it's time to start, she said, glancing at her watch,
• 2:02:22
Speaker 1: a gift from her father, and with a scarcely perceptible
• 2:02:25
Speaker 1: meaning smile to the young man, referring to something only
• 2:02:29
Speaker 1: known to themselves. She got up with a rustle of
• 2:02:31
Speaker 1: her skirts. They all got up, said good bye, and
• 2:02:36
Speaker 1: went away. When they were gone, ivan Ilyitch fancied he
• 2:02:39
Speaker 1: was easier. There was no falsity that had gone away
• 2:02:43
Speaker 1: with them. But the pain remained, that continual pain, that
• 2:02:48
Speaker 1: continual terror, made nothing harder, nothing easier. It was always worse.
• 2:02:56
Speaker 1: Again came minute after minute, hour after hour, still the same,
• 2:03:01
Speaker 1: and still no end, and ever more terrible, the inevitable end. Yes,
• 2:03:08
Speaker 1: send Garossim, he said, in answer to Pyotr's question, end
• 2:03:15
Speaker 1: of chapter eight. Late at night, his wife came back.
• 2:03:19
Speaker 1: She came in on tiptoe, but he heard her, opened
• 2:03:21
Speaker 1: his eyes and made haste to close them again. She
• 2:03:25
Speaker 1: wanted to send away Garossim and sit up with him. Herself. Instead,
• 2:03:30
Speaker 1: he opened his eyes and said, no, go away, are
• 2:03:35
Speaker 1: you in great pain? Always the same, Take sumopium. He
• 2:03:44
Speaker 1: agreed and drank it. She went away till three o'clock.
• 2:03:48
Speaker 1: He slept a miserable sleep. It seemed to him that
• 2:03:52
Speaker 1: he and his pain were being thrust somewhere into a narrow, deep,
• 2:03:56
Speaker 1: black sack, and they kept pushing him further and further in,
• 2:04:00
Speaker 1: and still could not thrust him to the bottom. And
• 2:04:03
Speaker 1: this operation was awful to him, and was accompanied with agony.
• 2:04:07
Speaker 1: And he was afraid, and yet wanted to fall into it,
• 2:04:10
Speaker 1: and struggled, and yet tried to get into it, and
• 2:04:14
Speaker 1: all of a sudden he slipped and fell and woke up. Garossim,
• 2:04:20
Speaker 1: still the same is sitting at the foot of the bed,
• 2:04:22
Speaker 1: half dozing, peacefully patient, And he is lying with his
• 2:04:26
Speaker 1: wasted legs, clad in stockings raised on Garossim's shoulders, the
• 2:04:31
Speaker 1: same candle burning in the alcove, and the same interminable pain.
• 2:04:38
Speaker 1: Go away, Garrassim, he whispered, It's all right, sir, I'll
• 2:04:44
Speaker 1: stay a bit longer. No go away. He took his
• 2:04:51
Speaker 1: legs down, lay sideways on his arm, and he felt
• 2:04:54
Speaker 1: very sorry for himself. He only waited till Garossim had
• 2:04:58
Speaker 1: gone away into the next room. He could restrain himself
• 2:05:01
Speaker 1: no longer, and cried like a child. He cried at
• 2:05:05
Speaker 1: his own helplessness, at his awful loneliness, at the cruelty
• 2:05:09
Speaker 1: of people, at the cruelty of God, at the absence
• 2:05:13
Speaker 1: of God. Why hast thou done all this? What brought
• 2:05:18
Speaker 1: me to this? Why why torture me so horribly? He
• 2:05:25
Speaker 1: did not expect an answer, and wept, indeed that there
• 2:05:29
Speaker 1: was and could be no answer. The pain grew more
• 2:05:33
Speaker 1: acute again, but he did not stir, did not call.
• 2:05:39
Speaker 1: He said to himself, come more, then, come strike me.
• 2:05:45
Speaker 1: But what for? What have I done to thee? What for? Then?
• 2:05:52
Speaker 1: He was still ceased, weeping, held his breath, and was
• 2:05:56
Speaker 1: all attention. He listened, as it were, not to have
• 2:06:00
Speaker 1: voice uttering sounds, but to the voice of his soul,
• 2:06:03
Speaker 1: to the current of thoughts that rose up within him.
• 2:06:08
Speaker 1: What is it you want? Was the first clear idea
• 2:06:12
Speaker 1: able to be put into words that he grasped. What
• 2:06:17
Speaker 1: not to suffer to live? He answered? And again he
• 2:06:23
Speaker 1: was utterly plunged into attention, so intense that even the
• 2:06:26
Speaker 1: pain did not distract him to live live how the
• 2:06:33
Speaker 1: voice of his soul was asking, why live as I
• 2:06:38
Speaker 1: used to live before? Happily and pleasantly as you used
• 2:06:44
Speaker 1: to live before? Happily and pleasantly, queried the voice, and
• 2:06:49
Speaker 1: he began going over in his imagination the best moments
• 2:06:52
Speaker 1: of his pleasant life. But strange to say, all these
• 2:06:57
Speaker 1: best moments of his pleasant life seemed now not at
• 2:07:00
Speaker 1: all what they had seemed then, all except the first
• 2:07:04
Speaker 1: memories of childhood. There in his childhood there had been
• 2:07:08
Speaker 1: something really pleasant in which one could have lived if
• 2:07:11
Speaker 1: it had come back. But the creature who had this
• 2:07:14
Speaker 1: pleasant experience was no more. It was like a memory
• 2:07:18
Speaker 1: of some one else. As soon as he reached the
• 2:07:22
Speaker 1: beginning of what had resulted in him, as he was
• 2:07:25
Speaker 1: now ivan ilyitch. All that had seemed joyous to him
• 2:07:28
Speaker 1: then now melted away before his eyes and were transformed
• 2:07:32
Speaker 1: into something trivial and often disgusting. And the further he
• 2:07:37
Speaker 1: went from childhood the nearer to the actual present, the
• 2:07:41
Speaker 1: more worthless and uncertain were the joys. It began with
• 2:07:45
Speaker 1: life at the school of jurisprudence. Then there had still
• 2:07:49
Speaker 1: been something genuinely good. Then there had been gaiety. Then
• 2:07:54
Speaker 1: there had been friendship, then there had been hopes. But
• 2:07:58
Speaker 1: in the higher classes the these good moments were already
• 2:08:01
Speaker 1: becoming rarer. Later on, during the first period of his
• 2:08:05
Speaker 1: official life, at the governor's good moments appeared, but it
• 2:08:09
Speaker 1: was all mixed and less and less of it was good,
• 2:08:13
Speaker 1: and further on even less was good. And the further
• 2:08:16
Speaker 1: he went, the less good there was. His marriage, as
• 2:08:21
Speaker 1: gratuitous as the disillusion of it, and the smell of
• 2:08:24
Speaker 1: his wife's breath, and the sensuality, the hypocrisy, and that
• 2:08:30
Speaker 1: deadly official life, and anxiety about money, and so for
• 2:08:34
Speaker 1: one year and two and ten and twenty, and always
• 2:08:38
Speaker 1: the same thing. And the further he went, the more deadly.
• 2:08:42
Speaker 1: It became as though I had been going steadily down hill,
• 2:08:48
Speaker 1: imagining that I was going up hill. So it was,
• 2:08:51
Speaker 1: in fact, in public opinion, I was going up hill,
• 2:08:55
Speaker 1: and steadily as I got up it, life was ebbing
• 2:08:59
Speaker 1: away from me. And now the work's done, there's only
• 2:09:04
Speaker 1: to die. But what is this? What for? It cannot be?
• 2:09:10
Speaker 1: It cannot be that life has been so senseless, so loathsome.
• 2:09:15
Speaker 1: And if it really was so loathsome and senseless, then
• 2:09:19
Speaker 1: why die and die in agony. There's something wrong? Can
• 2:09:26
Speaker 1: it be? I have not lived as one ought? Suddenly
• 2:09:29
Speaker 1: came into his head. But how not so when I've
• 2:09:34
Speaker 1: done everything as it should be done, he said, and
• 2:09:37
Speaker 1: at once dismissed this only solution of all the enigma
• 2:09:40
Speaker 1: of life and death as something utterly out of the question.
• 2:09:45
Speaker 1: What do you want now to live? Live? How live
• 2:09:51
Speaker 1: as you live at the corpse when the usher booms out?
• 2:09:53
Speaker 1: The judge is coming. The judge is coming. The judge
• 2:09:58
Speaker 1: is coming, he repeated to himself. Here he is the judge.
• 2:10:05
Speaker 1: But I am not to blame. He shrieked in fury.
• 2:10:09
Speaker 1: What's it for? And he left off crying and turning
• 2:10:13
Speaker 1: with his face to the wall, fell to pondering, always
• 2:10:16
Speaker 1: on the same question, what for why all this horror?
• 2:10:23
Speaker 1: But however much he pondered, he could not find an answer,
• 2:10:27
Speaker 1: And whenever the idea struck him, as it often did,
• 2:10:30
Speaker 1: that it all came of his never having lived as
• 2:10:32
Speaker 1: he ought? He thought of all the correctness of his
• 2:10:36
Speaker 1: life and dismissed this strange idea. End of chapter nine,
• 2:10:42
Speaker 1: another fortnight had passed. Ivan Ilyitch could not now get
• 2:10:46
Speaker 1: up from the sofa. He did not like lying in bed,
• 2:10:49
Speaker 1: and lay on the sofa, and lying almost all the
• 2:10:53
Speaker 1: time facing the wall. In loneliness, he suffered all the
• 2:10:56
Speaker 1: inexplicable agonies, and in loneliness wandered always that inexplicable question,
• 2:11:03
Speaker 1: what is it? Can it be true that its death?
• 2:11:07
Speaker 1: And an inner voice answered, yes, it is true? Why
• 2:11:13
Speaker 1: these agonies? And a voice answered, for no reason beyond
• 2:11:20
Speaker 1: and besides this, there was nothing from the very beginning
• 2:11:24
Speaker 1: of his illness. Ever since Ivan Ilyitch first went to
• 2:11:27
Speaker 1: the doctor's his life had been split up into two
• 2:11:30
Speaker 1: contradictory moods, which were continually alternating. One was despair and
• 2:11:35
Speaker 1: the anticipation of an uncomprehended and awful death. The other
• 2:11:39
Speaker 1: was hope and an absorbed watching over the actual condition
• 2:11:43
Speaker 1: of his body. First, there was nothing confronting him but
• 2:11:47
Speaker 1: a kidney or intestine which had temporarily declined to perform
• 2:11:50
Speaker 1: their duties. Then there was nothing but unknown, awful death,
• 2:11:54
Speaker 1: which there was no escaping. These two moods had alternated
• 2:11:59
Speaker 1: from the very beginning of the illness, But the further
• 2:12:02
Speaker 1: the illness progressed, the more doubtful and fantastic became the
• 2:12:05
Speaker 1: conception of the kidney, and the more real the sense
• 2:12:09
Speaker 1: of approaching death. He had but to reflect on what
• 2:12:13
Speaker 1: he had been three months before and what he was now,
• 2:12:16
Speaker 1: to reflect how steadily he had been going downhill, for
• 2:12:20
Speaker 1: every possibility of hope to be shattered of late, in
• 2:12:25
Speaker 1: the loneliness in which he found himself lying with his
• 2:12:28
Speaker 1: face to the back of the sofa, a loneliness in
• 2:12:31
Speaker 1: the middle of a populous town, and of his numerous
• 2:12:33
Speaker 1: acquaintances and his family, a loneliness than which none more
• 2:12:37
Speaker 1: complete could be found anywhere, not at the bottom of
• 2:12:41
Speaker 1: the sea, not deep down in the earth. Of Late.
• 2:12:45
Speaker 1: In this fearful loneliness, ivan Ilyitch had lived only in imagination.
• 2:12:49
Speaker 1: In the past. One by one, the pictures of his
• 2:12:53
Speaker 1: past rose up before him. It always began from what
• 2:12:56
Speaker 1: was nearest in time, and went back to the most
• 2:12:59
Speaker 1: remote to childhood, and rested there. If ivan Ilyitch thought
• 2:13:04
Speaker 1: of the stewed prunes that had been offered him for
• 2:13:06
Speaker 1: dinner that day, his mind went back to the damp,
• 2:13:09
Speaker 1: wrinkled French plum of his childhood, of its peculiar taste,
• 2:13:13
Speaker 1: and the flow of saliva when the stone was sucked,
• 2:13:16
Speaker 1: And along with this memory of a taste. There rose
• 2:13:19
Speaker 1: up a whole series of memories of that period, his nurse,
• 2:13:23
Speaker 1: his brother, his playthings. I mustn't, it's too painful, ivan
• 2:13:29
Speaker 1: Ilitch said to himself, and he brought himself back to
• 2:13:32
Speaker 1: the present. The button on the back of the sofa,
• 2:13:36
Speaker 1: and the creases in the Morocco, Morocco's dear and doesn't
• 2:13:42
Speaker 1: wear well. There was a quarrel over it, but the
• 2:13:45
Speaker 1: Morocco was different, and different too, the quarrel when we
• 2:13:49
Speaker 1: tore father's portfolio and were punished, and Mama brought us
• 2:13:53
Speaker 1: the tarts. And again his mind rested on his childhood,
• 2:13:58
Speaker 1: and again it was painful, and he tried to drive
• 2:14:01
Speaker 1: it away and think of something else. And again, at
• 2:14:05
Speaker 1: that point, together with that chain of associations, quite another
• 2:14:10
Speaker 1: chain of memories came into his heart of how his
• 2:14:13
Speaker 1: illness had grown up and become more acute. It was
• 2:14:17
Speaker 1: the same there. The further back, the more life there
• 2:14:20
Speaker 1: had been. There had been both more that was good
• 2:14:23
Speaker 1: in life and more of life itself, and the two
• 2:14:27
Speaker 1: began to melt into one. Just as the pain goes
• 2:14:31
Speaker 1: on getting worse and worse, so has my whole life
• 2:14:34
Speaker 1: gone on getting worse and worse, he thought. One light
• 2:14:39
Speaker 1: spot was there at the back at the beginning of life,
• 2:14:43
Speaker 1: and then it kept getting blacker and blacker, and going
• 2:14:46
Speaker 1: faster and faster in inverse ratio to the square of
• 2:14:51
Speaker 1: the distance from death, thought Ivan ilyitch, and the image
• 2:14:55
Speaker 1: of a stone falling downwards with increasing velocity sank into
• 2:14:59
Speaker 1: his soul. Life a series of increasing sufferings falls more
• 2:15:04
Speaker 1: and more swiftly to the end, the most fearful sufferings.
• 2:15:09
Speaker 1: I am falling, he shuddered, shifted himself would have resisted,
• 2:15:15
Speaker 1: but he knew beforehand that he could not resist. And again,
• 2:15:19
Speaker 1: with eyes weary with gazing at it, but unable not
• 2:15:22
Speaker 1: to gaze at what was before him, he stared at
• 2:15:25
Speaker 1: the back of the sofa and waited, waited, expecting that
• 2:15:28
Speaker 1: fearful fall and shock and dissolution. Resistance is impossible, he
• 2:15:35
Speaker 1: said to himself, But if one could at least comprehend
• 2:15:39
Speaker 1: what it's for, even that's impossible. It could be explained
• 2:15:45
Speaker 1: if one were to say that I hadn't lived as
• 2:15:47
Speaker 1: I ought. But that can't be alleged, he said to himself,
• 2:15:51
Speaker 1: thinking of all the regularity, correctness, and propriety of his life,
• 2:15:57
Speaker 1: that really can't be admitted, he said to himself, his
• 2:16:00
Speaker 1: lips smiling ironically, as though someone could see his smile
• 2:16:03
Speaker 1: and be deceived by it. No explanation, agony, death what for?
• 2:16:15
Speaker 1: End of chapter ten. So passed a fortnight. During that fortnight,
• 2:16:19
Speaker 1: an event occurred that had been desired by ivan Ilitch
• 2:16:22
Speaker 1: and his wife, Petrushchev made a formal proposal. This took
• 2:16:26
Speaker 1: place in the evening. Next day. Praskovya Fyodorovna went in
• 2:16:30
Speaker 1: to her husband, revolving in her mind how to inform
• 2:16:33
Speaker 1: him of Fyodor Dmitrievitch's proposal. But that night there had
• 2:16:37
Speaker 1: been a change for the worse in ivan Ilitch. Praskovya
• 2:16:41
Speaker 1: Fyodorovna found him on the same sofa, but in a
• 2:16:44
Speaker 1: different position. He was lying on his face, groaning and
• 2:16:48
Speaker 1: staring straight before him with a fixed gaze. She began
• 2:16:53
Speaker 1: talking of remedies. He turned his stare on her. She
• 2:16:57
Speaker 1: did not finish what she had begun, saying such hatred
• 2:17:00
Speaker 1: of her in particular was expressed in that stare. For
• 2:17:06
Speaker 1: Christ's sake, let me die in peace, he said. She
• 2:17:11
Speaker 1: would have gone away, but at that moment the daughter
• 2:17:14
Speaker 1: came in and went up to say good morning to him.
• 2:17:17
Speaker 1: He looked at his daughter just as at his wife,
• 2:17:19
Speaker 1: and to her inquiries how he was, he told her
• 2:17:22
Speaker 1: dryly that they would soon all be rid of him.
• 2:17:25
Speaker 1: Both were silent, sat a little while, and went out.
• 2:17:30
Speaker 1: How are we to blame, said Liza to her mother,
• 2:17:33
Speaker 1: as though we had done it. I'm sorry for Papa,
• 2:17:36
Speaker 1: but why punish us. At the usual hour the doctor came.
• 2:17:42
Speaker 1: Ivan Ilyitch answered yes, no, never taking his exasperated stare
• 2:17:48
Speaker 1: from him, and towards the end he said, why you
• 2:17:52
Speaker 1: know that you can do nothing, so let me be.
• 2:17:56
Speaker 1: We can relieve your suffering, said the doctor. Even that
• 2:18:02
Speaker 1: you can't do, let me be. The doctor went into
• 2:18:07
Speaker 1: the drawing room and told Praskovya Fyorovna that it was
• 2:18:09
Speaker 1: very serious and that the only resource left them was
• 2:18:12
Speaker 1: opium to relieve his sufferings, which must be terrible. The
• 2:18:17
Speaker 1: doctor said, his physical sufferings were terrible, and that was true.
• 2:18:21
Speaker 1: But even more terrible than his physical sufferings were his
• 2:18:24
Speaker 1: mental sufferings, and in that lay his chief misery. His
• 2:18:29
Speaker 1: moral sufferings were due to the fact that, during that night,
• 2:18:32
Speaker 1: as he looked at the sleepy, good natured, broad cheeked face,
• 2:18:35
Speaker 1: of Garossim. The thought had suddenly come into his head,
• 2:18:40
Speaker 1: what if, in reality, all my life, my conscious life,
• 2:18:43
Speaker 1: has been not the right thing. The thought struck him
• 2:18:48
Speaker 1: that what he had regarded before as an utter impossibility,
• 2:18:51
Speaker 1: that he had spent his life not as he ought,
• 2:18:54
Speaker 1: might be the truth. It struck him that those scarcely
• 2:18:58
Speaker 1: detected impulses of struggle against what was considered good by
• 2:19:02
Speaker 1: persons of higher position, scarcely detected impulses which he had dismissed,
• 2:19:07
Speaker 1: that they might be the real thing, and everything else
• 2:19:10
Speaker 1: might be not the right thing. And his official work,
• 2:19:15
Speaker 1: and his ordering of his daily life, and of his family,
• 2:19:18
Speaker 1: and these social and official interests, all that might be
• 2:19:22
Speaker 1: not the right thing. He tried to defend it all
• 2:19:25
Speaker 1: to himself, and suddenly he felt all the weakness of
• 2:19:29
Speaker 1: what he was defending, and it was useless to defend it.
• 2:19:35
Speaker 1: But if it's so, he said to himself, and I
• 2:19:39
Speaker 1: am leaving life with the consciousness that I have lost
• 2:19:42
Speaker 1: all that was given me and there's no correcting it.
• 2:19:46
Speaker 1: Then what he lay on his back and began going
• 2:19:50
Speaker 1: over his whole life entirely anew. When he saw the
• 2:19:54
Speaker 1: footman in the morning, then his wife, then his daughter,
• 2:19:58
Speaker 1: than the doctor. Every movement they made, every word they uttered,
• 2:20:02
Speaker 1: confirmed for him the terrible truth that had been revealed
• 2:20:05
Speaker 1: to him in the night. In them, he saw himself,
• 2:20:09
Speaker 1: saw all in which he had lived, and saw distinctly
• 2:20:13
Speaker 1: that it was all not the right thing. It was
• 2:20:16
Speaker 1: a horrible, vast deception that concealed both life and death.
• 2:20:21
Speaker 1: This consciousness intensified his physical agonies, multiplied them tenfold. He
• 2:20:27
Speaker 1: groaned and tossed from side to side and pulled at
• 2:20:30
Speaker 1: the covering over him. It seemed to him that it
• 2:20:32
Speaker 1: was stifling him and weighing him down, and for that
• 2:20:36
Speaker 1: he hated them. They gave him a big dose of opium.
• 2:20:40
Speaker 1: He sank into unconsciousness, but at dinner time the same
• 2:20:44
Speaker 1: thing began again. He drove them all away and tossed
• 2:20:48
Speaker 1: from side to side. His wife came to him and said, Jaan, darling,
• 2:20:54
Speaker 1: do this for my sake, For my sake, it can't
• 2:20:59
Speaker 1: do harm, and it all and does good. Why it's
• 2:21:02
Speaker 1: nothing and often in health people. He opened his eyes wide.
• 2:21:08
Speaker 1: What tat the sacrament? What for? No? Besides? She began
• 2:21:17
Speaker 1: to cry, Yes, my dear, I'll send for our priest.
• 2:21:22
Speaker 1: He's so nice. All right, very well, he said. When
• 2:21:29
Speaker 1: the priest came and confessed him, he was softened, felt,
• 2:21:32
Speaker 1: as it were, a relief from his doubts and consequently
• 2:21:35
Speaker 1: from his sufferings, and there came a moment of hope.
• 2:21:39
Speaker 1: He began once more thinking of the intestinal appendix and
• 2:21:42
Speaker 1: the possibility of curing it. He took the sacrament with
• 2:21:46
Speaker 1: tears in his eyes. When they laid him down again
• 2:21:49
Speaker 1: after the sacrament, for a minute he felt comfortable, and
• 2:21:53
Speaker 1: again the hope of life sprang up. He began to
• 2:21:56
Speaker 1: think about the operation which had been suggested to him
• 2:22:01
Speaker 1: to live. I want to live, he said to himself.
• 2:22:06
Speaker 1: His wife came in to congratulate him. She uttered the
• 2:22:09
Speaker 1: customary words and added, it's quite true, isn't it that
• 2:22:13
Speaker 1: you're better? Without looking at her, he said, yes. Her dress,
• 2:22:21
Speaker 1: her figure, the expression of her face, the tone of
• 2:22:24
Speaker 1: her voice all told him the same. Not the right thing.
• 2:22:29
Speaker 1: All that in which you lived and our living is
• 2:22:31
Speaker 1: lying deceit, hiding life and death away from you. And
• 2:22:36
Speaker 1: as soon as he had formed that thought, hatred sprang
• 2:22:39
Speaker 1: up in him, and with that hatred agonizing physical sufferings,
• 2:22:44
Speaker 1: and with these sufferings the sense of inevitable, approaching ruin.
• 2:22:49
Speaker 1: Something new was happening. There were screwing and shooting pains,
• 2:22:53
Speaker 1: and a tightness in his breathing. The expression of his
• 2:22:57
Speaker 1: face as he uttered that yes was terrible. After uttering
• 2:23:01
Speaker 1: that yes, looking her straight in the face, he turned
• 2:23:05
Speaker 1: on to his face with a rapidity extraordinary in his weakness,
• 2:23:08
Speaker 1: and shrieked, go away, go away, let me be end
• 2:23:16
Speaker 1: of Chapter eleven. From that moment there began the scream
• 2:23:19
Speaker 1: that never ceased for three days, and was so awful
• 2:23:22
Speaker 1: that through two closed doors one could not hear it
• 2:23:25
Speaker 1: without horror. At the moment when he answered his wife,
• 2:23:28
Speaker 1: he grasped that he had fallen, that there was no return,
• 2:23:32
Speaker 1: that the end had come, quite the end, while doubt
• 2:23:35
Speaker 1: was still as unsolved, still remained doubt. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh,
• 2:23:45
Speaker 1: he screamed, in varying intonations. He had begun screaming I
• 2:23:50
Speaker 1: don't want to, and so had gone on screaming on
• 2:23:54
Speaker 1: the same vowel sound ooh. All those three days, during
• 2:24:00
Speaker 1: which time did not exist for him, he was struggling
• 2:24:03
Speaker 1: in that black sack into which he was being thrust
• 2:24:05
Speaker 1: by an unseen, resistless force. He struggled as the man
• 2:24:10
Speaker 1: condemned to death struggles in the hands of the executioner,
• 2:24:13
Speaker 1: knowing that he cannot save himself, And every moment he
• 2:24:17
Speaker 1: felt that, in spite of all his efforts to struggle
• 2:24:19
Speaker 1: against it, he was getting nearer and nearer to what
• 2:24:22
Speaker 1: terrified him. He felt that his agony was due both
• 2:24:25
Speaker 1: to his being thrust into this black hole, and still
• 2:24:28
Speaker 1: more to his not being able to get right into it.
• 2:24:33
Speaker 1: What hindered him from getting into it was the claim
• 2:24:35
Speaker 1: that his life had been good. That justification of his
• 2:24:39
Speaker 1: life held him fast and would not let him get forward,
• 2:24:42
Speaker 1: and it caused him more agony than all. All. At
• 2:24:46
Speaker 1: once some force struck him in the chest, in the side,
• 2:24:49
Speaker 1: and stifled his breathing more than ever. He rolled forward
• 2:24:52
Speaker 1: into the hole, and there at the end there was
• 2:24:55
Speaker 1: some sort of light. It had happened with him, as
• 2:24:59
Speaker 1: it had some times happened to him in a railway carriage,
• 2:25:02
Speaker 1: when he had thought he was going forward while he
• 2:25:04
Speaker 1: was going back, and all of a sudden recognized his
• 2:25:07
Speaker 1: real direction. Yes, it has all been not the right thing,
• 2:25:13
Speaker 1: he said to himself, But that's no matter. He could
• 2:25:19
Speaker 1: he could do the right thing. What is the right thing?
• 2:25:24
Speaker 1: He asked himself, and suddenly he became quiet. This was
• 2:25:29
Speaker 1: at the end of the third day, two hours before
• 2:25:32
Speaker 1: his death. At that very moment, the schoolboy had stealthily
• 2:25:36
Speaker 1: crept into his father's room and gone up to his bedside.
• 2:25:40
Speaker 1: The dying man was screaming and waving his arms. His
• 2:25:43
Speaker 1: hand fell on the schoolboy's head. The boy snatched it,
• 2:25:47
Speaker 1: pressed it to his lips, and burst into tears. At
• 2:25:52
Speaker 1: that very moment, Ivan ilyitch had rolled into the hole
• 2:25:55
Speaker 1: and caught sight of the light, and it was revealed
• 2:25:57
Speaker 1: to him that his life had not been what it
• 2:25:59
Speaker 1: ought to be have been, but that that could still
• 2:26:02
Speaker 1: be set right. He asked himself what is the right thing?
• 2:26:07
Speaker 1: And became quiet listening. Then he felt some one was
• 2:26:10
Speaker 1: kissing his hand. He opened his eyes and glanced at
• 2:26:14
Speaker 1: his son. He felt sorry for him. His wife went
• 2:26:18
Speaker 1: up to him. He glanced at her. She was gazing
• 2:26:21
Speaker 1: at him with open mouth, the tears unwiped streaming over
• 2:26:25
Speaker 1: her nose and cheeks, a look of despair on her face.
• 2:26:29
Speaker 1: He felt sorry for her. Yes, I am making them miserable,
• 2:26:34
Speaker 1: he thought. They're sorry, but it will be better for
• 2:26:38
Speaker 1: them when I die. He would have said this, but
• 2:26:41
Speaker 1: had not the strength to utter it. Besides, why speak,
• 2:26:47
Speaker 1: I must act, he thought, with a glance to his wife,
• 2:26:51
Speaker 1: He pointed to his son and said, take away. Sorry
• 2:26:57
Speaker 1: for him, and you too. He tried to say forgive,
• 2:27:01
Speaker 1: but said forego, and, too weak to correct himself, shook
• 2:27:05
Speaker 1: his hand, knowing that he would understand whose understanding mattered.
• 2:27:11
Speaker 1: And all at once it became clear to him that
• 2:27:13
Speaker 1: what had tortured him and would not leave him was
• 2:27:15
Speaker 1: suddenly dropping away, all at once, on both sides, and
• 2:27:18
Speaker 1: on ten sides, and on all sides. He was sorry
• 2:27:23
Speaker 1: for them. Must act so that they might not suffer,
• 2:27:26
Speaker 1: set them free, and be free himself of those agonies.
• 2:27:31
Speaker 1: How right and how simple, he thought. And the pain,
• 2:27:37
Speaker 1: he asked himself, where is it gone? Eh? Where are
• 2:27:41
Speaker 1: you pain? He began to watch for it. Yes, here
• 2:27:48
Speaker 1: it is well? What of it? Let the pain be?
• 2:27:53
Speaker 1: And death? Where is it? He looked for his old
• 2:27:58
Speaker 1: accustomed terror of death and did not find it. Where
• 2:28:03
Speaker 1: is it? What death? There was no terror, because death
• 2:28:07
Speaker 1: was not either. In the place of death there was light.
• 2:28:14
Speaker 1: So this is it, he suddenly exclaimed aloud, What joy
• 2:28:23
Speaker 1: to him? All this passed in a single instant, and
• 2:28:26
Speaker 1: the meaning of that instant suffered no change after. For
• 2:28:30
Speaker 1: those present, his agony lasted another two hours. There was
• 2:28:34
Speaker 1: a rattle in his throat, a twitching in his wasted body.
• 2:28:38
Speaker 1: Then the rattle and the gasping came at longer and
• 2:28:40
Speaker 1: longer intervals. It is over, some one said over him.
• 2:28:48
Speaker 1: He caught those words and repeated them in his soul.
• 2:28:53
Speaker 1: Death is over, he said to himself. It's no more.
• 2:28:59
Speaker 1: He drew in a breath, stopped midway in the breath, stretched,
• 2:29:04
Speaker 1: and died March twenty five, eighteen eighty six, end of
• 2:29:12
Speaker 1: chapter twelve. This concludes the death of Ivan Ilyitch Balio Tolstoy,
