- 0:00In every age, evil finds a name. It is whispered in the mouths of
- 0:05mad prophets, scribbled in the margins of forgotten scrolls and
- 0:11buried beneath the charred altars of vanished cities.
- 0:16Some call it chaos, others lawlessness, lust and
- 0:21corruption. But across continents in
- 0:24centuries, one name rises like smoke from the ashes of every
- 0:29dark age. Belial before the fall of man
- 0:34was written in ink. Before the 1st Temple, blood and
- 0:37fire, there was Belial, the one without a master.
- 0:43To the Hebrew scribes he was not yet a being, but a condition.
- 0:48Worthlessness Incarnate the rod within the human soul.
- 0:54But to the desert Mystics he was a commander of legions, an
- 0:58ancient black winged Prince of guilt, born from shadow and let
- 1:04loose upon the world by divine design.
- 1:08In time he would wear many masks.
- 1:11The Roman persecutors knew him as the whisper behind tyrant's
- 1:14eyes. Medieval monks feared him as a
- 1:18demon of courts and kings, granting titles by favor and
- 1:23damning souls through silver tongues.
- 1:26Magicians, trembling in candlelight summoned him in
- 1:30languages older than Babel, and those who failed were never seen
- 1:35whole again. He spoke through oracles,
- 1:39possessed the flesh, built Colts from cities, and when science
- 1:44buried faith, Belial merely changed his name, reappearing in
- 1:48psych wards, haunted homes, and ritual circles cloaked as
- 1:54seances. He never left.
- 1:58This is his story, not as a symbol, not as a myth, but as a
- 2:03presence that has coiled itself around the rise and ruin of
- 2:07human civilization. From the dry bones of ancient
- 2:11Israel to the trembling breath of a girl in the 1970s, from the
- 2:17black ink of grimoires to the blood slick floors of exorcisms,
- 2:22Belial has remained unchanged, seductive, brilliant, and
- 2:28utterly merciless. This is not a parable, nor an
- 2:33allegory, but history written in fear in the Prince of
- 2:38lawlessness is still watching. Belial's name originates from a
- 2:44Hebrew term Belial, meaning worthlessness or lawlessness,
- 2:50often used in the Hebrew Bible to label wicked or ungodly
- 2:55people. Phrases like sons of Belial
- 2:58appear throughout the Old Testament to denote corrupt,
- 3:02idolatrous, or immoral individuals rather than a
- 3:06specific entity. For example, the Book of Judges
- 3:10refers to lawless men as sons of Belial, and in one Samuel Eli's
- 3:16corrupt sons are called sons of Belial, usually translated as
- 3:21wicked men. In these early usages, Belial is
- 3:26not a distinct demon, but a personification of moral
- 3:29depravity or rebellion. Notably, a few poetic passages
- 3:35use Belial in a quasi personified way.
- 3:39Psalms 18 four speaks of the cords of death and the floods of
- 3:43Belial, often rendered torrents of destruction, and Nahum 115
- 3:49declares that Belial, meaning the wicked one or evil
- 3:53personified, will no longer pass through Judah.
- 3:57Such verses hint is Belial as an embodiment of evil or the
- 4:01underworld, setting the stage for later riders to imagine
- 4:05Belial as an actual demonic being.
- 4:09By the Second Temple time period, roughly 3rd century BCE
- 4:13to 1st century CE, Belial had evolved in Jewish thought form
- 4:18as an abstract concept into a literal supernatural adversary.
- 4:24Is especially evident in the Dead Sea Scrolls, where Belial
- 4:28is explicitly portrayed as a demonic figure.
- 4:31In the War Scroll, Belial appears to be the leader of the
- 4:34forces of darkness opposing God's faithful.
- 4:38One fragment addresses God about Belial.
- 4:42You made Belial for the pit Angel of enmity and darkness is
- 4:48his domain. His counsel is to bring about
- 4:51wickedness and guilt, all the spirits of his laughter, angels
- 4:56of destruction. Here, Belial is depicted as the
- 4:59chief of all evil spirits, the Angel of darkness who commands
- 5:04demons and brings guilt and corruption into the world,
- 5:08essentially casting human history as a cosmic struggle
- 5:12between Belial's sons of darkness and God's sons of
- 5:15light. The Community Rule Scroll even
- 5:18describes humanity is divided into those in the Lot of Belial
- 5:23versus those in the Lot of God, reflecting a strong dualistic
- 5:27worldview. In these writings, Belial is
- 5:31still called an Angel, albeit a fallen malevolent 1 created by
- 5:36God for the purpose of evil and who will ultimately be condemned
- 5:41to the pit. Early Jewish Apocrypha built
- 5:45this idea of Belial as a chief demon.
- 5:49The Damascus document warns of the three Nets of Belial sexual
- 5:54fornification, welfare, greed and the defilement of the Temple
- 6:00by which Belial ensnares Israel into sin.
- 6:05It foretells an end time showdown when Belial shall be
- 6:09let loose against Israel before ultimate divine victory.
- 6:14Likewise, the testaments of the 12 patriarchs frequently
- 6:18personify Belial as the source of impurity.
- 6:22In these testaments, the patriarchs exhort their children
- 6:25to follow God's law instead of Belial's influence.
- 6:30One passage prophecies that in the Messianic age, the Messiah
- 6:34will blind Belial and banish the spirits of wickedness.
- 6:39In mainstream Judaism, Belial never became the name of a
- 6:43specific devil in the canonautical texts.
- 6:47Rabbinic literature continued to use Belial as a general term for
- 6:50extreme wickedness or lawlessness, in line with its
- 6:54biblical usage. Later rabbis often interpreted
- 6:58sons of Belial simply to mean people without yoke.
- 7:02The Talmud, for instance, glosses Belial as without a yoke
- 7:07or one without rule, reinforcing that it denotes rebellious
- 7:11characters rather than a demon's name.
- 7:14Thus, in the Jewish tradition, Belial remained more of an
- 7:18allegory for an evil mindset than a literal demon.
- 7:22One notable exception outside the rabbinic mainstream is a
- 7:26medieval Jewish text, the Toledad Yeshu, which even uses
- 7:31Belial as a derogatory name for Jesus, punting on the idea of
- 7:36worthlessness. In Christianity, Belial was
- 7:40likewise initially understood as a synonym for Satan or a
- 7:43personification of evil. The New Testament contains
- 7:48Belial's name only once. What accord has Christ with
- 7:52Belial? Paul asked rhetorically in Two
- 7:55Corinthians 615. Here, Belial is used to mean the
- 8:00chief of wickedness opposed to Christ, essentially equating
- 8:05Belial with Satan or a satanic figure.
- 8:08Early Christians took this association and ran with it. 2nd
- 8:13century church writings and later theological commentaries
- 8:16often treat Belial as another name for the devil.
- 8:20For example, Paul's reference LED some commentators to
- 8:23identify Belial with the Antichrist spirit.
- 8:26The idea of Belial as Antichrist appears in certain early
- 8:30Christian apocalypses and sermons.
- 8:33Indeed, the sibling Oracles uses Belial as a name for a future
- 8:38tyrant or Antichrist figure. In these oracles, Belial is
- 8:43prophesied to come after the Roman Emperor Nero as a great
- 8:47deceiver, showing how Christians absorbed the name into their end
- 8:52times imagination. The martyrdom and ascension of
- 8:56Isaiah equates Belial with Satan.
- 8:59It states that Belial will incite the persecution of
- 9:02Isaiah, calling him the king of this world who indwells A
- 9:07tyrant. Early on, Belial was not seen as
- 9:11a minor demon, but essentially as the devil himself or his
- 9:15avatar and Christian thought. As Christian theology developed,
- 9:20Belial did not feature prominently as a distinct
- 9:23character in Scripture or liturgy, but the name persisted
- 9:27in literature and commentary as a byword for the devil.
- 9:31For instance, medieval Christian poets and writers would
- 9:35occasionally use Belial to mean Satan or any demonic force.
- 9:40A vivid example comes from John Milton's 17th century epic
- 9:44Paradise Lost, where Belial is betrayed as one of the fallen
- 9:48angels. In Satan's Counsel, Milton
- 9:51describes Belial as the epitome of impurity and sloth, noting
- 9:57that Belial came last then, whom a spirit more lewd fell not from
- 10:02heaven or more gross to love vice for itself.
- 10:07Milton emphasizes that no demon was more depraved or morally
- 10:11worthless than Belial. In Paradise Lost, Book 2,
- 10:15Belisle gives a persuasive speech counseling the demons to
- 10:19avoid further war with heaven, not out of wisdom but out of
- 10:23cowardice and laziness. Milton's Belisle is graceful and
- 10:29humane and demeanor yet false and hollow, a smooth talking
- 10:35tempter who fosters lust, violence and rot and courts and
- 10:40cities. This literary portrayal through
- 10:43fiction draws on the long standing tradition that Belial
- 10:47represents the spirit of lawless lust and deception.
- 10:51In some medieval folk plays and sermons, Belial appears as a
- 10:55personified demon of debauchery. An early Latin morality text
- 11:00from 1382, Procesis Belial by Jacobus di Teramo even imagined
- 11:07A courtroom drama between Belial and Jesus, symbolizing the
- 11:11struggle of evil against good and a legal trial setting.
- 11:16In summary, Christian culture absorbed Belial as another name
- 11:20for the devil or a major demon, synonymous with impurity,
- 11:25rebellion, and ruthlessness. Outside of Scripture and
- 11:29theological discourse, Belial took on a rich life in a cult
- 11:34and demonological lore. Medieval and Renaissance
- 11:37grimoires elevated Belial to one of the mighty demons of Hell.
- 11:42In these texts, Belial is no longer just another name for
- 11:45Satan, but a powerful demon Prince in his own right.
- 11:50Early evidence of this comes from the Testament of Solomon,
- 11:54where King Solomon magically compels various demons.
- 11:58Belial appears among the demons summoned.
- 12:01One legend even claims that Belial danced before King
- 12:04Solomon when bound by the King's ring.
- 12:07This reflects the developing idea of Belial as a summoned
- 12:11spirit and magical traditions. By the 16th and 17th centuries,
- 12:17Belial was firmly entrenched in the sulmonic grimoires of
- 12:21Europe. Several, including the Lesser
- 12:24Key of Solomon, both list Belial among the infernal hierarchy.
- 12:29According to these grimoires, King Belial is a high-ranking
- 12:33demon who once belonged to the angelic Order of Virtues.
- 12:38Belial is said to have led astray many lesser spirits, and
- 12:42he fell among the worthier and wiser angels, implying he was
- 12:47exceptionally prestigious before his fall.
- 12:50After being cast down, Belial became a king of Hell.
- 12:55Deceitful and malevolent, the grimoires give detailed
- 12:59descriptions of his appearance and abilities.
- 13:02Belisle often manifests as a beautiful Angel riding in a
- 13:06fiery chariot, speaking with a pleasant voice.
- 13:11Despite his fair appearance, he is treacherous.
- 13:15Demonologist warned that Belisle lies incessantly unless
- 13:18constrained by magical rites or divine names.
- 13:23When properly compelled, however, he can impart truthful
- 13:27answers and will grant favors to magicians.
- 13:31In the infernal hierarchy, Blile is typically depicted as ruling
- 13:35over a vast number of legions, over 80 to be exact.
- 13:41Composed partially of former virtues and angels, his powers
- 13:46in magic are great, and some of his specialities, according to
- 13:50the grimoires, include distributing high titles and
- 13:53offices, giving favor from important persons, and providing
- 13:58familiars or servant spirits to the magician.
- 14:02However, the grimoires also note that offerings or sacrifices
- 14:06must be presented to Belial to make him speak honestly,
- 14:11otherwise he will deceive the conjurer.
- 14:14Magical Text often cautioned that if Belial is evoked and
- 14:18does not deliver on his promises, he can be punished by
- 14:22recalling the binding chain used by King Solomon, who legendarily
- 14:27imprisoned Belial and other rebel kings in a brass vessel.
- 14:32Indeed, an elaborate legend, such stories illustrate Belial's
- 14:37craftiness in the lore that grew around his interactions with
- 14:41legendary magicians over time. Occultist embellished Belial's
- 14:47persona further. The dictionale Infernal
- 14:50describes Belial as one of Hell's ambassadors and a demon
- 14:54of unparalleled depravity. Colin Deplancy writes that no
- 14:59demon in Hell is more dissolute or crupulous than Belial.
- 15:05He is engrossed in vice for vice's sake, yet outwardly he
- 15:11appears courteous and dignified. This encyclopedia notes that
- 15:15Belial had an infamous reputation for lust and
- 15:18lawlessness. Purportedly, he was adored by
- 15:22the Citians and had temples in Sodom and other cities of sin.
- 15:27Demonologist of the Renaissance also equated Belial with the
- 15:31demon of arrogance and rebellion.
- 15:34Some traced his name to a supposed meaning as without
- 15:37master, implying that he acknowledges no authority.
- 15:42This meaning was later adopted by Satanic and occult groups as
- 15:46well. In the mid 20th century, Anton
- 15:50Lavey's Satanic Bible named Belial as one of the four Crown
- 15:55Princess of Hell, representing the element of Earth.
- 15:59Lavey emphasizes Belial as the spirit of independence and
- 16:04self-sufficiency. Literally without a master.
- 16:09Fittingly, casting him is a patron of earthly pride and
- 16:12carnal desire. Thus, in the modern occult
- 16:16philosophy, Belial symbolizes the earth base impulses and
- 16:21rebellion against authority, often invoked as a source of
- 16:26personal power and autonomy. Across Grimoire's and centuries
- 16:31of magical lore, Belial's character remains fairly
- 16:34consistent. He is portrayed as a
- 16:37high-ranking, cunning and corrupt demon who lures with
- 16:41fair promises but ultimately brings ruin.
- 16:45Ritual magicians have invoked King Belial for everything from
- 16:49political power to sexual favors.
- 16:53Reflecting his attributions and lore.
- 16:56Aleister Crowley and his Nineteen O 4 edition of Goesha
- 17:00includes Belial sigil and notes on his abilities, continuing the
- 17:05tradition of summoning him as a goetic spirit.
- 17:09In summary, the occult tradition sets Belial among the great
- 17:13demons, a fallen Angel and deceitful allure governing
- 17:17dozens of legions, rewarding followers with earthly gifts,
- 17:22yet ever ready to deceive and betray.
- 17:27Belial's fearsome reputation has carried into modern occultism,
- 17:31fiction, and even purported real world paranormal encounters.
- 17:36Documented demonology cases and exorcisms have occasionally
- 17:41invoked the name of Belial as a possessing or haunting entity.
- 17:46For example, one of the most famous 20th century exorcism
- 17:50cases, that of Annalise Michelle, involved the possessed
- 17:55individual allegedly identifying several indwelling demons by
- 17:59name. Among these was Belial, named
- 18:03alongside Lucifer, Judas, and Nero, as well as others during
- 18:09the exorcism riots, linking this ancient demon much closer than
- 18:14we'd like to the modern day. While skeptics debate the
- 18:18validity of such claims, the case brought Belial's name to
- 18:22public attention as a demon associated with possession
- 18:25phenomena. Modern demonologists and
- 18:28paranormal investigators also report encounters where Belial
- 18:32is identified as the malicious force at work.
- 18:36In one case documented by demonologist John Saphis, a
- 18:40family haunting in the United States was attributed to a
- 18:42violent demon calling itself Belial.
- 18:45The entity allegedly attacked the household and even displayed
- 18:49greater natural abilities. Zephis recounted that it was the
- 18:53first case he witnessed where a demon caused a victim to
- 18:57levitate. According to the case reports,
- 19:00the Belial entity was exceptionally hard to exercise,
- 19:04consistent with the Lord scribing Belial as stubborn and
- 19:08powerful. These sensational accounts,
- 19:11while not verifiable in a scientific sense, show that
- 19:15Belial remains part of the contemporary demonological
- 19:18lexicon invoked to explain particularly intense or
- 19:23manipulative hauntings. There are also historical
- 19:26legends and anecdotes linking Belial to paranormal
- 19:30experiences. Medieval hagiographies contain
- 19:34tales of holy men battling demons by name, and Belial
- 19:38appears in that genre too. For instance, it is said that
- 19:42Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, a 13th century Catholic St. was
- 19:47physically assaulted by a demon named Belial who tried to
- 19:51disrupt his pious work. The Saint allegedly drove the
- 19:55demon away through prayer. Such stories reinforced Belial's
- 19:59image as a tangible evil presence that holy individuals
- 20:03might confront. In a cold circles, some
- 20:07practitioners have claimed to successfully summon or
- 20:10communicate with Belial in rituals, seeking his aid or
- 20:15bargaining with him for earthly rewards, essentially continuing
- 20:19the grimoire tradition into the present day.
- 20:23Modern occult authors have published guides to invoking
- 20:25Belial, describing hair raising encounters or tests of will
- 20:31attributed to this demon. While these accounts vary wildly
- 20:35in credibility, they contribute to Belisles ongoing mystique as
- 20:40an active spiritual force in the dark corners of the paranormal
- 20:44world. Folklore and popular culture
- 20:47have also kept Belisle's name alive.
- 20:50He is referenced in horror novels, heavy metal music, video
- 20:54games, and films as a powerful demon or devil figure.
- 20:59For example, the Diablo video game franchise, which is one of
- 21:03my personal favorites, includes a demon Lord Belial, aptly
- 21:08titled Lord of Lies, which draws directly from the Christian
- 21:13demonological tradition. In some horror literature,
- 21:18Belial is portrayed as a grand adversary orchestrating cults or
- 21:22corrupting leaders behind the scenes, playing on his ancient
- 21:26reputation as a demon of depravity and chaos.
- 21:31Even outside explicitly religious contexts, the name
- 21:34Belial has an ominous ring that creators use to evoke satanic
- 21:39evil. This modern folklore cements
- 21:42Belial's role as a villain across eras, from ancient
- 21:47scrolls to contemporary storytelling, he endures as a
- 21:51symbol of ultimate treachery and darkness across centuries.
- 21:57Names fade, temples crumble, languages die, but Belial
- 22:03remains. He has no need for worship, no
- 22:07throne of gold, no altar carved by human hands.
- 22:12His dominion is built in shadows behind courtroom doors, in
- 22:17whispers of sedition, in the trembling breath of a child who
- 22:22wakes at 3:33 AM with eyes fixed on the corner of the room.
- 22:28He does not rage like Lucifer or seduce like Asmodeus.
- 22:33Belial waits. He corrupts slowly, speaking not
- 22:37in fire but in reason. He is the lawless voice that
- 22:42convinced kings to betray their own blood, the silver tongue in
- 22:46the boardroom promising unchecked dominion, the unseen
- 22:51hand that bends justice until it breaks.
- 22:55And tonight, somewhere, he is summoned again.
- 23:00Not in Latin or Aramaic, but through hunger, power or
- 23:05desperation. A whisper and a seance.
- 23:10A sigil etched into concrete. A voice in the mind that says
- 23:15you need no master, you only need me.
