- 0:00We are about to embark on a journey to behold a glorious,
- 0:07marvelous, compelling, captivating revelation of the
- 0:13Lord Jesus Christ, who He is now.
- 0:16What He is saying to the churches today and what He will
- 0:21do in our world in the days to come are the things that await
- 0:26us in this amazing exegetical expedition.
- 0:32We briefly touched on the first few verses of chapter 1 in our
- 0:36overview last week, but there's still crucial details that we
- 0:39need to draw from them before we move on to the main passage of
- 0:44this section. And so if you can, let's meet
- 0:47together again at Revelation chapter 1, beginning in verse
- 0:51one, and read it together. The revelation of Jesus Christ,
- 1:02which God gave him to show to His servants the things that
- 1:07must soon take place. He made a known by sending his
- 1:10Angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God
- 1:15and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.
- 1:20Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this
- 1:23prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is
- 1:27written in it, for the time is near.
- 1:32When reading this over and over again, There are three things
- 1:36that should stand out to us from these 3 verses.
- 1:41Who this is for meaning the book who this is from, and lastly,
- 1:49who will be blessed. Did you notice the specific
- 1:55group of people that the Holy Spirit addresses concerning this
- 1:59book? We're told right here that it is
- 2:02to show his servants, that's Christ servants and verse one,
- 2:07the things that must soon take place.
- 2:11So what that tells us is that the insights of this book, the
- 2:14wisdom of this book, the encouragement, the guidance, the
- 2:16warnings, the predictions, the visions of this book are tailor
- 2:21made and are targeting a particular category of people,
- 2:27Christ's servants. Now servants is quite a broad
- 2:31term, but when you understand the original language a little
- 2:35bit, you'll discover that it's much more narrow in its
- 2:39interpretation. It's not just servants.
- 2:43We're actually talking about slaves.
- 2:46The Greek word is doulos, and a doulos or a slave was not
- 2:51somebody who was necessarily employed, it was somebody who
- 2:55was actually owned. A doulos was somebody who was
- 2:59permanently owned by someone else, and that position of
- 3:04servitude remained as a lifelong call.
- 3:09A slave didn't have his own rights.
- 3:12He solely lived to perform the will and the pleasure of the one
- 3:16that he was owned by. Now in John's day, the joy of
- 3:24that position being a slave, being an advantage or
- 3:27disadvantage, largely depended on the goodness of the
- 3:30individual that one was subservient to.
- 3:34And this may sound surprising to us, but in Roman Society of this
- 3:37time, you would have people who would give themselves up to be a
- 3:40slave thinking that they would be better off doing so.
- 3:45And so we have to understand that even the concept of slavery
- 3:49was much different than how we seem to interpret it in Western
- 3:54culture. In the case of the apostles,
- 3:58they gladly identify themselves and many of the openings of
- 4:02their letters as slaves specifically to Jesus Christ,
- 4:07bond servants of Jesus Christ. And they did so because they
- 4:12wanted to communicate, one, that Jesus Christ is a glorious
- 4:16master, and two, that their devotion to him was complete and
- 4:23that it was lifelong. I hope you don't miss it next
- 4:28time you study the New Testament.
- 4:29Paul, a servant, a bondservant, a slave of Jesus Christ.
- 4:35Jude even says I'm a servant of Jesus.
- 4:37James says I'm a servant of Jesus Christ.
- 4:41This is not a temporary thing. This is permanent.
- 4:45It's forever and you and I have to understand that the opening
- 4:51of this book, God expects all of his followers to relate him in
- 4:55the same way. And so we have to establish
- 4:58something right now before we move on.
- 5:01Here's a question we should ask am IA bondservant of Jesus
- 5:07Christ. Does he own my will?
- 5:14Does he determine my decisions? Does he have my resources?
- 5:22Am I truly a slave to Jesus Christ?
- 5:29And that's important for many reasons, including for how we're
- 5:33going to receive the truth of this book because later we're
- 5:35going to discover that there's a specific blessing for those who
- 5:38keep what is written in it. And to keep what is written in
- 5:42it means that you take it to heart and that you obey what it
- 5:45asks of you. You can't do that unless you
- 5:47first settle this. Do I actually belong to Him?
- 5:52So what I'm trying to convey from the beginning is this.
- 5:55The way this book will impact your life is determined by
- 5:59whether or not you are a slave to Jesus Christ.
- 6:02If not, completely surrender to Him that you're not going to
- 6:05truly benefit from what this book has to teach you.
- 6:09And so you have to ask yourself, am I coming to the Book of
- 6:11Revelation here at Maranatha Bible Church merely as a
- 6:15student? Or am I coming because I am a
- 6:19bondservant of Jesus Christ? This is for bondservants.
- 6:24This is for slaves of Jesus Christ.
- 6:27But who is this from? Interestingly, look at the last
- 6:30part of verse one. He made it known by sending his
- 6:33Angel to his servant John. So even there we have John
- 6:37called a bondservant, a slave of Christ.
- 6:41And each of us here have to understand that John is one of
- 6:45the apostles. He's one of the 12 and church
- 6:48tradition attributes the authorship of this book, the
- 6:51human authorship to him. And there are many reasons for
- 6:54that, good reasons for that. When you actually look at and
- 6:57you survey this book, you'll discover clues, phrases,
- 7:01expressions, references that are unique to John's writings.
- 7:07And there are, there are many, many, many parallels, but I want
- 7:10to look at 2 obvious ones. So hopefully you have the Book
- 7:12of Revelation open in your hands.
- 7:13Look at Revelation 5 and I want you to see verse 6 briefly.
- 7:21John writes. And between the throne and the
- 7:23four living creatures, and among the elders, I saw a lamb
- 7:27standing as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with
- 7:32seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all
- 7:35the earth. The messianic title of the Lamb
- 7:39is very common to us. I think it was virtually in
- 7:41every song that we sang this afternoon.
- 7:44But that picture of Jesus which appears many times in Revelation
- 7:49is only found in one other book in the New Testament, the book
- 7:54of John, unless you count Paul, who says in First Corinthians
- 7:58that Christ is our Passover lamb.
- 8:01But the the idea of the Lamb, the Lamb of God, that's only
- 8:05found here in Revelation and the Gospel account, which is amazing
- 8:10and it's not the only one. Here's another Joy 9 expression.
- 8:14Look at Revelation 19 in verse 13 it says he is clothed in a
- 8:24robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is
- 8:28the Word of God. Sound familiar?
- 8:34In the beginning was the Word, yes, right?
- 8:36John 11. And not only in John 11 but
- 8:40first John 11, Christ there is referenced as the word of life.
- 8:46So we have it in Revelation as a title, as a reference to Christ
- 8:49here in Revelation, have it in John, have it in the first
- 8:52epistle written by John. This is obviously written by him
- 8:56and there's many other things that we can look to to confirm
- 8:58that. Instead, I want to take this
- 9:01time to look at something that John mentions back in chapter 1,
- 9:04verse two. Look what this bond servant said
- 9:07about the Book of Revelation who bore witness to the Word of God
- 9:14and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.
- 9:18John calls the Book of Revelation the Word of God.
- 9:23That may seem obvious to you, but what is sad is that
- 9:28believers in the past and even some believers today in practice
- 9:33do not uphold the Book of Revelation with such dignity and
- 9:36honor. Now this may shock you, but let
- 9:39me give you a quote from Martin Luther.
- 9:40Yes, the great reformer, he said this about the Book of
- 9:44Revelation. Quote, My spirit cannot
- 9:47accommodate itself to this book. For me, this is reason enough
- 9:51not to think highly of it. Christ is neither taught nor
- 9:57known in it. End of quote.
- 10:00Now, Martin Luther was right about very important theological
- 10:04truths, but I have to say that he was not right about the Book
- 10:06of Revelation. And the reason why he wrestled
- 10:10with it like many do today is because of the visions and the
- 10:13cryptic nature of some of these things.
- 10:14So he just kind of put it in the peripheral.
- 10:16He didn't really uphold it. The way John himself describes
- 10:22this book, it's the word of God which tells you and I that no
- 10:26matter how you feel about the visions, the predictions of this
- 10:28letter, we have to understand that the man who wrote it lived
- 10:31with Jesus for 3 1/2 years. He witnessed his execution on a
- 10:35Roman cross. He spent time with him and ate
- 10:39with him after his resurrection, and he beheld his bodily
- 10:42ascension into heaven. The same John who experienced
- 10:45that is the same John who is telling us that Lord gave me
- 10:49this truth. It's as though John is saying in
- 10:53the same way I faithfully conveyed to you the details of
- 10:56His first coming, I am equally loyal to tell you about the
- 10:59details of His second coming. And that is not the only thing
- 11:04that John wants to tell us which comes to verse 3 for us.
- 11:08Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this
- 11:10prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is
- 11:14written in it for the time is near.
- 11:19If you've ever read the Book of Revelation, then you've probably
- 11:22noticed that this is not the only beatitude found in the Book
- 11:25of Revelation. A beatitude is a declaration of
- 11:28blessedness or happiness, right? And we're most familiar with the
- 11:32Beatitudes and the introduction of the Sermon on the Mount, But
- 11:35we have beatitudes here, and the one that we have here in verse 3
- 11:39is one out of seven total beatitudes in the Book of
- 11:42Revelation. Now, the other day I was
- 11:44counting to make sure, and it's confirmed there are a total of
- 11:487, which bless me because 7 is such a significant number in
- 11:53this book. Most of us know that the number
- 11:56seven in the Bible speaks to completion or God's full
- 12:01fulfillment concerning something.
- 12:04And if that's true and we relate it to these declarations of
- 12:07blessings in Revelation, here's what we can confirm.
- 12:11This book has complete blessing for us.
- 12:15Total blessing, full blessing. And at the beginning here, we're
- 12:21told three ways that we can be blessed by this book.
- 12:28The first way is to read it aloud.
- 12:30I think that's what I'm doing, right?
- 12:33The second way is for those to hear it.
- 12:35That's what you're doing. And lastly, for the reader and
- 12:38the hearer to keep what is written in it.
- 12:43John expected that this letter, when he sent it to the seven
- 12:46churches, would be read in each congregation.
- 12:48Now, what I appreciate about what he's saying here is that he
- 12:50doesn't say blessed is the one who understands every single
- 12:54detail in the Book of Revelation because a lot of us would be in
- 12:56trouble. No, no, no, this book is so
- 12:59packed with spiritual treasure that just reading it and hearing
- 13:03it will bless you. Just doing that.
- 13:06Now I got to also say this. You can tell I'm getting a
- 13:08little excited, right? This is a clue to some of the
- 13:13practices of the early church, a practice that you and I are
- 13:17honoring right now. There would be somebody who was
- 13:21designated to read the Scriptures while others listen
- 13:26to the word of God being read. Aren't you glad that we're
- 13:29keeping up with that biblical tradition?
- 13:31Here we are reading and hearing. This is something that the
- 13:35ancient church did, and it's been going on for thousands of
- 13:38years now. Many of us who grew up in
- 13:41Christian circles are familiar with this beatitude in
- 13:44Revelation One. But I have this question, What
- 13:50blessing does John have in mind for those who would read and
- 13:54hear and obey what this book has to say?
- 13:58And I believe we have an answer. The answer is when you look at
- 14:01the book end, the last part of the Book of Revelation, and you
- 14:04see this beatitude repeated almost word for word.
- 14:08So go to Revelation 22 and notice what Jesus says in verse
- 14:127 of Revelation 22. Here's another beatitude and
- 14:22behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the
- 14:26words of the prophecy of this book.
- 14:31So notice that there is a connection between keeping the
- 14:36words of this prophecy and Jesus coming back soon, engaging with
- 14:41the prophecies of this book in light of the return of Jesus
- 14:45Christ. Here's what this tells me.
- 14:48Reading, hearing, keeping what is in this book blesses us
- 14:52mainly because it thunders the truth of the soon return of
- 14:57Christ and it compels you to prepare for his arrival.
- 15:01That's a blessing. Here's what you're going to be
- 15:04reminded as we go through every detail, try to at least in these
- 15:08wonderful chapters. The main message is going to be
- 15:10this Jesus is coming back soon. Christ is coming back soon.
- 15:14The King is coming again, and the appropriate response is I
- 15:19must be ready for it. I must be prepared.
- 15:27And as helpful as that is, this fountain is so deep, so lively,
- 15:33so gushing with blessing that we have other things to receive
- 15:39from it. And we're going to sip from more
- 15:42of it as we consider now the main section of this message.
- 15:46Now, last week, let me say this, I was providing the testimony
- 15:50early on about how encouraged I was by the response of the
- 15:53people. One of the comments was you were
- 15:55too fast, brother, with your introduction message.
- 15:57Please take your time. Please don't be afraid to
- 16:00continue. I don't know if all you feel
- 16:02that way, but here's me responding to that request
- 16:05because all that I just said was the introduction.
- 16:08Let's come to verse 4 now and read to verse 8.
- 16:14John to the seven churches that are in Asia, grace to you and
- 16:20peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from
- 16:25the seven spirits who are before his throne.
- 16:28And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first born
- 16:31of the dead and the ruler of kings on earth.
- 16:35To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His
- 16:38blood and made us a Kingdom priest to his God and Father, to
- 16:43Him be glory and dominion, forever and ever.
- 16:45Amen. Behold, he's coming with the
- 16:48clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who Pierce them,
- 16:53and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him.
- 16:56Even so. Amen.
- 16:58I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and
- 17:03who was and who is to come the Almighty.
- 17:09There's that #7 again. Verse 4 John to the seven
- 17:13churches that are in Asia A student in the New Testament
- 17:18will know we'll probably think well there are more than 7
- 17:22churches in Asia Minor at this time and you might even wondered
- 17:28why didn't John write to some of the churches that we read in the
- 17:31epistles so. So why not more than 7?
- 17:37Why not fewer? Well, again, if there is a
- 17:41symbolic attachment to this number, then we can understand
- 17:45what John by the Spirit is trying to communicate.
- 17:49Yes, these are real historical churches that have been
- 17:51addressed, but that #7 is meant to tell us that this message is
- 17:55also for all believers. If #7 means completion,
- 17:59fullness, then what we have here is John telling us that God is
- 18:04trying to speak to God, is aiming His message at all
- 18:08believers of all time. This is relevant to every
- 18:11Christian. So we are being written to.
- 18:15This is for us, and those specific messages will come in
- 18:18chapter 2 and chapter 3. But right here, we're being
- 18:20prepared. What we have to read is for us
- 18:24personally, and the first thing that we can learn, the first
- 18:30major lesson following the fact that John writes to the seven
- 18:34churches, is that a true church that belongs to Jesus Christ
- 18:39will be a church that acknowledges and believes in the
- 18:43Trinity. There are many branches of
- 18:48Christianity that are not really Christian that do not believe in
- 18:52the Tri unity of God, that he is one being 3 persons, not 3 gods.
- 19:00He is one, yes, but He is also 3.
- 19:05And we can spend the rest of this time trying to explain that
- 19:08and prove it from the Bible. But the thing that I want to
- 19:10just make clear is that a true church will believe in that,
- 19:15will defend that, and a church is not really a church that
- 19:18rejects that truth. Did you notice that this
- 19:23greeting to the seven churches came from the Trinity?
- 19:29Look again from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come.
- 19:35This speaks of the Father and His eternality, and from the
- 19:39seven spirits who are before His throne.
- 19:41This speaks of the Spirit and His fullness.
- 19:44And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first born
- 19:47of the dead and the rulers of kings on earth.
- 19:50This speaks of the Son and His supremacy.
- 19:53So right here in this greeting you have traces of the Trinity.
- 19:57A clear reference that this is coming from Father, Spirit and
- 20:01Son. And this teaches us that a true
- 20:05church will receive such a revelation.
- 20:08They will not deny it, they will not resist it, they will not try
- 20:10to explain it away. But let's look at these things
- 20:13more closely, shall we? Let's look at the Father, at all
- 20:16the things that can be said about the Father.
- 20:18We're told here that he is, He was.
- 20:22Who is to come. The timelessness of the Father.
- 20:28Now, that sounds very abstract, That sounds very out there, but
- 20:30it's meant to comfort the believer.
- 20:32Because what we're supposed to face here is that the God you
- 20:35learned about in Genesis through Deuteronomy, the God who did
- 20:40miracles in Joshua, the God who was patient in the days of
- 20:45Samuel and the kings, the God who spoke through Isaiah,
- 20:49Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and all the other prophets is the
- 20:54same God who is watching over his church today.
- 20:59That's what we're supposed to sense.
- 21:01He's the same 1. He hasn't changed.
- 21:04He still is there. He's still supervising, he's
- 21:06still empowering, he's still providing, he's still speaking.
- 21:11So he's not diluted in any manner.
- 21:14He's not distance himself over time.
- 21:17He is near, he is close. And the same power and wisdom
- 21:21and love that he operated in the past is available to us today.
- 21:24The Father. And then we go to who is before
- 21:28the Father's throne. Look again here and from the
- 21:31seven spirits who are before His throne.
- 21:35Now initially that may sound confusing because we are all
- 21:38familiar with one spirit who shares equal standing with the
- 21:43Father, That's the Holy Spirit. So now we have this idea of
- 21:46seven spirits, and I've even heard people who mockingly come
- 21:50to a text like this and accuse Christians.
- 21:52Oh, you believe three and one. I think you actually believe
- 21:549:00 and 1:00 because you have this mention of the seven
- 21:57spirits and you add the Son and the Father.
- 21:59Isn't that 9? Do you remember how we open up
- 22:04this series last week? That from beginning to end, the
- 22:08Book of Revelation is absolutely drenched with Old Testament
- 22:11references. And so when something doesn't
- 22:14seem so clear, we have to ask ourselves, have we seen
- 22:17something like this before? Have we looked at any text that
- 22:21might give some explanation to what John is conveying here?
- 22:25And the answer is yes, I believe the apostle John is referencing
- 22:30the sevenfold ministry of the Holy Spirit that Isaiah spoke
- 22:33about in Chapter 11. Turn there with me and Isaiah 11
- 22:37verses one and two, and this will hopefully make sense to us.
- 22:47And Isaiah 11 verse one and two we read there shall come forth a
- 22:51shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots
- 22:54shall bear fruit. Let's count now in verse 2.
- 22:58And the Spirit of the Lord, one shall rest upon him, the spirit
- 23:03of wisdom 2 and understanding 3 the spirit of counsel 4 and
- 23:08might 5 the spirit of knowledge 6 and the fear of the Lord 7.
- 23:17So when John is depicting the seven spirits who are before his
- 23:20throne, he's not speaking about 7 separate beings.
- 23:23He's referring to the perfect qualities of the ministry of the
- 23:28Holy Spirit, one Holy Spirit who's also the Spirit of the
- 23:33Lord, the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might,
- 23:36knowledge, and the fear of the Lord.
- 23:38And while Christ was on earth, according to Isaiah's prophecy,
- 23:41the Spirit in his fullness rested upon the Messiah.
- 23:45And now we find him before the throne of God in the Book of
- 23:49Revelation. And it's going to appear more
- 23:51than once in our study of this book.
- 23:53So we have the Holy Spirit who's greeting the seven churches.
- 23:59Lastly, we have the Son. It's no surprise to us that
- 24:04Christ is mentioned last because he's the theme of the Book of
- 24:06Revelation. So John's going to expand on the
- 24:09truth of who Jesus Christ is. And what are we told?
- 24:13Look at these wonderful titles, The faithful witness.
- 24:16You can depend on what He says. He never lies, He never
- 24:20exaggerates. He's perfect in His witness.
- 24:23He's the first born of the dead and the rule of kings on earth.
- 24:27We sang that so resoundingly. And out of this threefold
- 24:30portrait, I think the most puzzling 1 might be the first
- 24:33born of the dead. What does John mean by that?
- 24:38It's not a mystery. This is a banner that is not
- 24:41only powerful, it has promise attached to it.
- 24:45The first born of the dead, implying that there are others
- 24:51on the way. What he means by this is that
- 24:54Jesus Christ is the first to rise from the dead with a
- 24:57glorified, exalted, eternal body.
- 25:02And his resurrection, as unique as it is, paves the way for
- 25:07future resurrections, namely those who put their faith and
- 25:10trust in Him. So he's the first born of the
- 25:13dead, and we will follow him and share in that experience.
- 25:18How encouraging this would have been to these seven churches who
- 25:23are being persecuted and suffering in unique ways.
- 25:26They were reminded right at the introduction, We are going to
- 25:30follow in the destiny of Christ. He's the first one of that.
- 25:33And even if we lose our lives, we will share in his fate.
- 25:37This is what John is saying. And this is not all that he has
- 25:40to say about this caption of Christ.
- 25:42He goes on to something that I think is so precious.
- 25:48He goes on to say what to him who loves us and has freed us
- 25:55from our sins by his blood. You know what one of the first
- 26:01messages is of the Book of Revelation?
- 26:05That this eternal King, the defeater of death, the returning
- 26:10conqueror, loves you, loves each of us.
- 26:20I don't think many people associate the Book of Revelation
- 26:23with the revelation of God's love.
- 26:27It's right there in the beginning.
- 26:30Do you believe God loves you? It's one thing to believe that
- 26:37he created you. It's one thing to believe that
- 26:41he provides for you. It's another thing to believe
- 26:44that he will. Yes, promise you a place with
- 26:48him forever. Do you have the faith to believe
- 26:53that this amazing, incredible, powerful God actually has
- 27:01delight for you? John wants the churches to know
- 27:09this. God loves you.
- 27:13When is that ever dawned on you? When was the last time you
- 27:18relished in the thought God loves me, not that you love God.
- 27:23That's wonderful. When did you bathe in that
- 27:28revelation last? I can tell you it will empower
- 27:31you in ways that you cannot even fathom.
- 27:34The other day I was driving on my own.
- 27:35I was meeting a few people and it was in a long drive.
- 27:38So I thought to myself, let me just, I'm not going to listen to
- 27:40anything. I'm just going to take this time
- 27:42by myself. It was dark, it was quiet, just
- 27:48speaking to the Lord. And this thought that you and I
- 27:52know touched me in a fresh way. You died for me.
- 28:01You died for me. There I am driving, thinking.
- 28:07You left heaven. You came to this world and you
- 28:13died for me so that I can be with you forever.
- 28:19I almost skipped my meeting. Because you see, this is not
- 28:24just a sentimental thing. This love, it acts, it moves, it
- 28:31intervenes, it transforms, it's tangible, it's observable, it's
- 28:38measurable in a way, because we're told here what this love
- 28:43has done. Look at the last part of verse
- 28:455. To him who loves us and has
- 28:47freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a Kingdom
- 28:51priest to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion
- 28:54forever and ever, Amen. So this, this love frees us from
- 29:02something and makes us into something.
- 29:06It frees us from our sins by his blood.
- 29:11So it's a love that is a rated erased our record of wrong.
- 29:14It's it's a love that liberates us for eternity.
- 29:17It's a love that actually sets you free from the power of sin.
- 29:23If God just said I loved you, that would have been wonderful,
- 29:25but he proved it and it changes you.
- 29:30If you really receive it, it frees you.
- 29:33He paid a high price in order to show how much he loves us, not
- 29:38just saving us from something. He saved us for something.
- 29:42He made us a Kingdom priest to his God and Father, Not just the
- 29:47Kingdom, a Kingdom of priests. I, I get it.
- 29:51The temptation to hear language like this is like this is
- 29:53abstracted. I don't know what to make of it.
- 29:56What does that have to do with me?
- 29:58Really Well, how does that really impact my life?
- 29:59Well, it speaks of the royal nature and the spiritual
- 30:03privilege of the Christian, so that we've been guaranteed not
- 30:07just to be with Christ when he comes to rule and reign, but we
- 30:10will reign with Him. And more than that, we have an
- 30:17access to Him. We don't need any earthly
- 30:20mediator. We need to jump through hoops.
- 30:22Think about this. It doesn't even end here.
- 30:24Not only am IA priest, a priest is one who serves as a meteor
- 30:28between man and God. I have access to God, but God
- 30:32even tells me that I'm the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 30:36So as a priest and as the dwelling place for God, no
- 30:39matter where I am at any point of the day, I can talk to him, I
- 30:44can worship him, I can access him, I can receive from him on
- 30:50the basis of the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.
- 30:54So this love, it frees me, it also molds me and makes me into
- 30:59something. That's one of the first messages
- 31:02of the Book of Revelation. God loves his church and every
- 31:07single individual believer. I pray that you would pray that
- 31:14this would be more real to you in the days to come.
- 31:18This thought so moved John. He couldn't help it.
- 31:21He breaks out into praise. Look at the rest of verse five.
- 31:25He says to him, be glory and dominion, forever and ever.
- 31:28Amen. He got excited when he spoke
- 31:31about these things too. But in contrast to the grace,
- 31:36peace, and love that is poured out on believers, those who are
- 31:39outside the church will wail on account of Him.
- 31:45Look at verse 7. Behold, He is coming with the
- 31:47clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who Pierce them.
- 31:51And all the tribes of the earth will wail on account of Him.
- 31:54Even so. Amen.
- 31:56So John says now look, behold, turn your attention to this.
- 32:00I'm giving you a preview of what this book is really about.
- 32:03Christ is coming back and that truth is a means for us to
- 32:08worship, and it will be the reason for many to lament.
- 32:14Look how incredible this is. He is coming with the clouds and
- 32:17every eye will see Him, no matter the time zone, no matter
- 32:23the regions of the earth that are unexplored, that are hiding
- 32:26indigenous people groups. At one point Christ will take
- 32:30center stage of the universe and every eye will witness it, and
- 32:34every eye will acknowledge this is Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
- 32:41Every blasphemer who mocked him will admit it.
- 32:46Every false religionist who is denied His identity, namely His
- 32:49deity, will accept it, and in one moment every atheist will
- 32:54become a believer. But it will be too late for
- 32:58many, because they'll realize that he's not coming the way he
- 33:03came the first time. He's coming to judge, and his
- 33:06judgement will be eternal. This is why we're told that many
- 33:10will wail. But it is so interesting here
- 33:13that John gives us a heads up. He actually underscores a
- 33:18specific people group who will also witness him.
- 33:21Look again here, even those who pierced him.
- 33:27Now you read that and you think this is OK, but it's a general
- 33:31reference to those who crucified him.
- 33:33But no, he's actually echoing a prophecy from Zechariah 12/10.
- 33:37You can turn there on your own at another time, but that's
- 33:40where we're told that the people of Israel who are responsible
- 33:44for crucifying their Messiah, the fulfillment of them who
- 33:49pierced Him and wailing and weeping on account of Him, will
- 33:52be realized at the Second Coming.
- 33:57Which is fascinating because when you look at Zechariah
- 34:0012/10, it confirms that God has a purpose and plan for the
- 34:04ethnic people of Israel up until His return.
- 34:09That is why understanding God's purpose for Israel is so
- 34:13crucial. Nothing to do with politics my
- 34:16friend, but deeply ingrained in how you frame your eschatology,
- 34:21which is a fancy word for the study and your knowledge of the
- 34:23last days. Those who have pierced them will
- 34:27see Him. Why would you highlight out of
- 34:29all the tribes of the world, all the people, groups of the world,
- 34:32all the nations of the world, one that has gone through a
- 34:36roller coaster throughout history?
- 34:38Evidently a prophecy about them will be realized at the
- 34:42culmination of the age. We're going to explore this as
- 34:45we go on through this book. But notice here, this is a
- 34:52spectacular prophecy and here's a summary of it.
- 34:55He says here that Christ will do what he is coming with the
- 34:58clouds. When Jesus went up bodily in
- 35:03Acts chapter one verse 9, we're told there that he was hidden by
- 35:08a cloud. Now, if you've ever been to a
- 35:11play, then you might remember that at some point, in the event
- 35:16a curtain would drop and there would be a pause, a break right
- 35:20to the act. And then there would be a time
- 35:23for you to, you know, refresh yourself, go do something in
- 35:25return, only for that curtain to lift again and for the play to
- 35:29resume. That's how I like to think of
- 35:31this cloud picture that when he ascended into heaven, the
- 35:36curtain dropped. The cloud concealed him.
- 35:41But when he returns, the clouds will part and they will reveal
- 35:45him the first time he ascended as a rejected Messiah.
- 35:48When he comes back, he's going to be a conquering king.
- 35:53And John is saying look for the clouds.
- 35:56They will usher him in. And this is such a spectacular
- 35:59prophecy. You are think about it.
- 36:02You are predicting somebody who has been supposedly dead for
- 36:072000 years is going to make a reappearance and actually take
- 36:11over everything. Now we as Christians believe
- 36:13he's alive and so astounding is such a claim.
- 36:19John pauses, not speaking on behalf of the Lord anymore, but
- 36:22allows God now to speak for himself.
- 36:25In verse 8. What does the Lord say?
- 36:29I am the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord God who is and who
- 36:32was and who is to come the Almighty.
- 36:35It's as though God steps in and gives his personal endorsement
- 36:38for verse 7. I'm going to do this.
- 36:44Jesus Christ is coming back. You know why?
- 36:48I'm the alpha and the Omega. What does that mean?
- 36:53That's the first and last letter for the Greek alphabet.
- 36:57And So what the Lord is saying essentially is I'm the beginning
- 37:00and the end. It again echoes his eternality.
- 37:05More than that, he says, I give the first word, I'm going to
- 37:10give the last word, and no one can change that.
- 37:14I'm the alpha and the Omega. I'm outside of time.
- 37:19I can predict the future because I already see it from time to
- 37:23time when people try to ask how does God know things?
- 37:26How do we kind of wrestle and make sense of His foreknowledge
- 37:29and our personal responsibility and all these things?
- 37:32It's hard to grasp. And I like to jokingly tell
- 37:34people, you know, God right now is at your birth date, your
- 37:37first birth date and your funeral at the same time.
- 37:42Try to figure that out over food today.
- 37:47The alpha, the Omega, the beginning of the end.
- 37:50I gave the first word. I'm going to give the last word.
- 37:53But this statement here is more than just God declaring that He
- 37:57is outside of time. He also wants to confirm that He
- 38:00is in control of every event within time.
- 38:06What is he going to say? And the alpha and the Omega says
- 38:09the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come?
- 38:13The Almighty, The Almighty. That description for God doesn't
- 38:22appear a lot in the New Testament.
- 38:25A total of 10 times the rest. All other nine are found here in
- 38:29Revelation. Think about that.
- 38:32This is God saying something about Himself in Revelation that
- 38:35He wants to emphasize. And the word Almighty simply
- 38:39means this one who has His hand and everything, One who holds
- 38:45sway to everything. In other words, He's in control,
- 38:50the Almighty, the Almighty, the Almighty.
- 38:52That's what is being blasted from Revelation.
- 38:56Obviously, for us to be persuaded of His sovereignty,
- 39:01that in the last days He is going to be completely in
- 39:04control, even though everything looks like it's going out of
- 39:06control. I'm the Almighty 1, the Almighty
- 39:091, the Almighty 1, and so He's the determiner of events.
- 39:15And it would be a mistake to think that the Lord being the
- 39:18Alpha and the Omega, is only interested in the beginning of
- 39:20time. Then He backed away and let
- 39:22things just go their own way. And then now He'll come back and
- 39:25put things in order. No, remember, what does it say?
- 39:28Who is not just who was and who is to come?
- 39:32He is now. So even now, today, in 2025,
- 39:36He's the Almighty. He's not just going to be
- 39:38Almighty when He returns. He's the Almighty until His
- 39:42return. And when He returns, which tells
- 39:46you, and I want that He is in control of every single thing in
- 39:50your life, He's in control of the city of Chicago.
- 39:53He's in control of the state. He's in control of this nation
- 39:57and the nations of the world. He is sovereign over every king,
- 40:01every president, Prime Minister, a dictator.
- 40:04And none can resist them. None can challenge him and
- 40:07succeed. Many have tried to thwart his
- 40:09plans and his prophecies, but have failed.
- 40:11And they will always fail until he proves himself.
- 40:14He's the Almighty and the Almighty.
- 40:22Loves you, genuinely loves you. His heart is stirred for us.
- 40:32People talk about mysteries in the Bible.
- 40:34To me, that's one of the greatest mysteries.
- 40:38How many of us are there in the world?
- 40:42How many of us throughout the ages?
- 40:45And yet He promises to walk with you and me as though we were the
- 40:50only person in the world. How many prayers has God
- 40:54answered in your life from heaven?
- 40:55The Almighty 1 Not because you're worthy, but because He
- 40:58loves you. The things that you're not even
- 41:02aware of that He's protecting you from.
- 41:04How He has every single day planned for you ahead.
- 41:08He knows it all and it will be for your good.
- 41:12And He will supply everything. And it'll be for the purpose of
- 41:15sanctifying you, making you more like His Son.
- 41:19I belong to the Almighty. So do you if you're in Christ.
- 41:25So this is what these seven churches are hearing before he
- 41:27gets into these specific things that he will say to them in
- 41:31chapter 2 and three. And listen, in chapter 2 and
- 41:33three, a lot of these churches will receive scathing rebukes.
- 41:37But you know what's amazing? Before he corrects any of them,
- 41:40he tells these churches, you're loved.
- 41:45You were loved. I think even in that we have an
- 41:49example for how we correct others.
- 41:52Do we love them? Do they know that they are loved
- 41:54by us? Well, I better stop before I get
- 41:58carried away. I hear the voices of those.
- 42:01Last week I said just keep going brother, don't worry about it.
- 42:06This is the beginning of our study in Revelation, but we've
- 42:10come together here to reflect on His love for us as we break
- 42:14bread. So if I can ask the praise team
- 42:16to join us. And I encourage you to reflect
- 42:22on His love. So you have the woman at the
- 42:29well who is so ashamed of her story that she goes to this
- 42:33well. The hottest point of the day
- 42:35wasn't very wise. People would go earlier to get
- 42:38water for their families and their flock.
- 42:41So here she is in isolation, and she's drawing from this.
- 42:44Well, Jesus comes and asks for a drink.
- 42:46And you're familiar with the conversation.
- 42:48And Jesus begins to slowly unveil who he really is by
- 42:53demonstrating his power, his knowledge.
- 42:55And he tells her you've had more than one husband.
- 43:00And he actually confirms the amount.
- 43:04And she's obviously moved by this, but it says something
- 43:07about what she was yearning for. You know, when she goes to this
- 43:10well and she's drawing water, it's a picture of what she was
- 43:13thirsting for it. She was looking for love.
- 43:17She was looking for validation. And so she was jumping from
- 43:20marriage to marriage to marriage, right?
- 43:22And then she just gave up on the whole marriage thing all
- 43:23together. And the person that she was with
- 43:25when Christ met her was not her husband.
- 43:30And then Jesus so patiently leads her to the revelation of
- 43:33that, of the fact that he is the Messiah.
- 43:36Her eyes are open to this truth. She's so moved by it that she
- 43:40goes to run back to Samaria to tell people of what this man has
- 43:44told about her. And there's this little detail
- 43:46in John 4. She left behind that jar of
- 43:48water, again, if you're consistent with the picture, who
- 43:54Christ was to her, satisfied her thirst.
- 43:59And she left behind that jar where she tried to scoop up
- 44:02meaning and purpose and gratification because she found
- 44:06it in him. She found it in him.
- 44:08You can find it in him. I'm telling you, this love is so
- 44:12profound, so real, that it frees you.
- 44:15It really does free you. And it's so difficult for man to
- 44:20grasp it. That's why Paul in Ephesians 3,
- 44:22he says, I bow my knees before the Father.
- 44:25And what does he say? It's just that you may know the
- 44:28height, the depth, the breadth of this love for you see, a
- 44:33preacher can come up and tell you God loves you.
- 44:34That's one thing and it can move you and it should.
- 44:37But you need the power of the Holy Spirit to really get it.
- 44:41It's really good. That's why we pray before we
- 44:42come up here and do these meetings and that's why this
- 44:45leadership prays for the people here that the reality of God
- 44:49would be you name to known to every single one of us,
- 44:51including those who are praying for it.
- 44:53Well, we ask, that is, we've entered the door of the series
- 44:57and revelation and we've been confronted by many things,
- 45:00including this truth that who you are and all your might and
- 45:03splendor and glory, You love us. Make it real in every heart in
- 45:08this place. And Lord, we'll know it's real
- 45:12when we are free from things that are lying to us and
- 45:16damaging us and robbing us of the gift that you have for us.
- 45:21Lord, let this love liberate people from sin, doubt,
- 45:25depression. We pray that, Lord, through this
- 45:29series of revelation, we would see your love.
- 45:32And so even now, Lord, as we eat together and fellowship, may the
- 45:35presence of the Holy Spirit be real and all that He has to
- 45:39offer. Would you bless the food and the
- 45:41hands that have sacrificed to prepare for it?
- 45:43And may we get a glimpse of that feast that is to come and the
- 45:47fellowship that we will have with you and with one another
- 45:49for all of eternity. Lord, open our eyes, We pray.
- 45:52This Sunday, in the mighty glorious name of the Lord Jesus
- 45:56Christ, we pray Amen and Amen and Amen.
