Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: And now for the rules of the international Chinese downhill.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: There are none.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: This is Def Wreck, a very unserious podcast about entertainment experiences you will definitely recommend.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Movie minutiae and television tidbits get ranked, rated, reviewed, and skewed, and in the end, you'll know which one to Def Wreck.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I'm John McBride.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm an authority on popular entertainment and pop culture because I have access to the internet.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: What's better than an episode of your favorite TV series?
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: A movie based on your favorite TV series.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: But how would you know if you're watching the longer cinematic version or the shorter episodic kind you're used to?
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Simply by adding the movie to the title, you eliminate the guesswork and now you know just what kind of thing you are viewing.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: As a bonus, tacking on the movie to the title adds a bit of gravitas and sophistication.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: From Jackass the Movie to It's Pat the Movie, film adaptations of popular television shows or characters have been a Hollywood tradition for decades.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: It's a great way to squeeze extra money out of an established IP, and it adds much needed stress to already overworked cast and crew members.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: There's a bit of cornball whimsy to having the movie and a film's name because it's as if we needed a foolproof way to tell us just what kind of thing we are watching.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Also, by incorporating the movie in the title, it elicits excitement and intrigue, with the potential for characters getting to wear different costumes, have scenes set in more elaborate locations, and the possibilities of characters maybe saying a swear word or two.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Expanding a TV show's mythos has been a long-standing practice, so many films find clever ways to clarify that it's a movie without saying the movie.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: South Park, bigger, longer, and uncut, had some fun with its silver screen debut, whereas other animated sitcoms played it safer with their big screen jumps like The Simpsons movie or the Bob's Burgers movie.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Doug's first movie took the Nickelodeon cartoon in a different titular direction.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And also, it's a pretty bold one, too, assuming Doug Funny would get a second.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: 1978's Superman, the movie, is legendary, of course, and really was a monumental phenomenon of pop culture since that time.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: It truly was a spectacle and a culture-shifting moment to see the Man of Steel on the big screen in that way.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Perhaps the most awesomely snooty alternative to calling something the movie was 1979 Star Trek The Motion Picture.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: While maybe one of the more boring Star Trek movies for what it is, the story is good, straight up trippy sci-fi, and it set the precedent for Trek movies to have a subtitle that began with the up until 1994 with Star Trek Generations.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: All good things come to an end, I suppose.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I'll break down the top three movies that have the movie in the name, and then I'll reveal which is the number one pick I recommend.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: But first, a few honorable mentions.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: The drawn together movie, the movie, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colin movie film for theaters, the Kentucky Fried movie.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: They didn't need to clarify that they were the movie versions of the respective shows, or simply that they were movies in general, but they did, and they have my respect, the movie.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: F1 the movie.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: I do not follow professional auto racing of any kind, but if there's a movie about it, I'm along for the ride.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter if it's Ford vs.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Ferrari Driven, Rush, Days of Thunder, or even Drive, and the Fast and the Furious films.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: I'm excited to get behind the wheel of a fuel-burning thrill ride.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: The extent of my automobile automotive knowledge is cargo vroom vroom.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And so it's due to this blissful ignorance that I absolutely loved the 2025 Brad Pitt M vehicle, F1 the movie.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Director Joseph Kacinski took the formula that won with Top Gun Maverick and hit the road with this summer blockbuster.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: While it could be argued that the plot is essentially the same as Cars 3, F1 rolled into cinemas with its own spin on driving drama.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Much like how I thoroughly enjoyed the Top Gun sequel without knowing a darn thing about how to pilot any aircraft of any kind, I loved watching F1's fast-paced story burn rubber.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: The fact that the official title includes the movie could suggest that this film represents Formula One racing as a whole and not merely the tale of the drivers and their respective teams.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: My theory is that the marketing department wanted to make sure no one confused it with the keyboard command for help.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Reason to wreck.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Rewatchable and highly enjoyable, this is what a genuinely good movie is.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: It's a throwback to so many other classics in several ways, but above all else, F1 places first in my movies of 2025, because you don't need to know anything about pro racing to have fun with this motion picture.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's probably better if you don't know anything about real racing, since, based on what I'm told, it's a heavily stylized take on the sport.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Hey, the cars went vroom vroom, so I'm happy.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Mystery Science Theater 3000, the movie.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: 1996 was a stellar year for movies, releasing banger after banger.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: With so many amazing choices for moviegoers, one late April weekend didn't yield much box office success for Mike Nelson and the robot riffers.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: The televised antics of the orbiting Satellite of Love retained its massive following that has only grown in the years since the film's debut, and the fans have followed the creators in their next projects such as Rift Tracks and Cinematic Titanic.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Cable replays of the MST3K film and subsequent DVD sales, along with streaming platform views, have preserved the life of this movie about watching a bad movie.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: As the poor opening ticket sales reflect, MST3K, though popular amongst its own fandom, was just not well known enough with the public at large, specifying that this was the movie version of whatever this thing probably was only added to existing confusion.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Or maybe audiences decided that they would have rather seen the substitute, Celtic Pride or Mrs.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Winterborn.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Coincidentally, the Kids in the Hall movie Brain Candy was released a week earlier and similarly has a large fan base, but still bombed at the time it opened, only to have people find it on cable and the like.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: As someone who was already a fan of this show that would air at odd times, I greatly enjoyed the MST3K movie, despite being more familiar with original series lead character Joel Robinson.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Over time, I learned more about the show's history and Mike's role as a writer and gained an even bigger appreciation for this odd, hilarious, and endlessly rewatchable movie.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Reason to wreck.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Chances are, if you're already one of the minifans, you are already on board and don't need much convincing.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: But for the uninitiated, I'll keep it simple.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Most everybody likes to joke during bad movies, and this one has professional comedians and performers hacking an old sci-fi B movie to bits.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: And there are puppets.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: January of 1984 was a turning point in the history of humankind because that's when a comedy that had hot dog in its name, but was about skiing, entered our collective lives.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: To my knowledge, there is no existing hot dog lore that this film expands upon, nor does it appear that Franks or Bratwurst or sausages of any kind are of any significant importance to the film's story.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: However, you can count on wieners being involved in some way.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Hot Dog is a product of its time, being produced in an era of teen comedies, especially sports-themed ones.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: This romp happens to focus on the athletic competition of freestyle skiing.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Snow-filled hijinks are abound as we follow the story of Patrick Hauser as Harkin and Tracy Smith as Sonny, as they learn about love and life amid the zany escapade surrounding a skiing contest.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: There are parties of foreign bully and a big all-or-nothing challenge at the end.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Nowadays, this type of flick can be seen as a nostalgic good time, an amusing peek at mid-80s comedies of this ilk.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: If you decide to give it a watch, you may find yourself riffing throughout it, much like the MST3K game.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Reason to wreck.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: If having a laugh at the wildness of ski-related comedy films that time forgot is your thing, then heat up a hot dog and go for it.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Whether or not it's kosher, well, I'll leave that up to you.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Def Wreck.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: This comes down to the letters and numbers.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: F1 or MST3K.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: I have such fond memories of the riffers riffing on that old cheesy sci-fi flick.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: But for fans not as familiar, the comedy may be a one-trick pony and not be as rewatchable.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: That being said, the film is infinitely quotable, but does lack the big movie star blockbuster vibe of F1.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, I'll def wreck MST3K due to the fact that it has a cozy charm that can be viewed anytime, where F1 feels like it's more of an event, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: It is a big deal and should be treated as such.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: MST3K wins out here though because of the opposite, which again isn't a bad thing.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: It's a comfort movie that is a hilarious good time.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Follow for more entertainment videos about movies, TV, books, pretty much the main three things.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And I write about superheroes and robots and I post about pop culture.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Be sure to like and subscribe.
