- 1:02Speaker 3: you're trying to force the ball to Courtland at all?

- 1:18Speaker 3: Legy So we head into week three. It felt like
- 1:22Speaker 3: out of the first four games of the season, last
- 1:24Speaker 3: week was the most begettable, just because the Steelers offense
- 1:28Speaker 3: was not going to be a team that lit up
- 1:29Speaker 3: the scoreboard. But what is your overall assessment if you
- 1:33Speaker 3: gave it a grade the first two weeks under bon Nicks,
- 1:36Speaker 3: what is it?
- 1:38Speaker 4: Well? I give it a scene because it's exactly what
- 1:42Speaker 4: I expected. So I think I've been pretty consistent on
- 1:48Speaker 4: this these first four games, We're always going to be
- 1:52Speaker 4: a tough draw for him. And you know, despite the
- 1:56Speaker 4: fact Sean Payton has slatted the idea away, these are
- 2:01Speaker 4: four very experienced, respected, defensive minded head coaches, and teams
- 2:10Speaker 4: with defensive minded head coaches are always willing to do
- 2:14Speaker 4: a little more, be a little more aggressive, have a
- 2:20Speaker 4: little more variety, and they're coverages because they're the guys
- 2:24Speaker 4: in charge and they don't have to answer to anybody else.
- 2:28Speaker 4: So this was always gonna be a tough draw for him.
- 2:31Speaker 4: It's it's why I thought, you know, I don't know,
- 2:37Speaker 4: you know, we'll see a couple of years from now
- 2:39Speaker 4: that I just don't know how good it is to
- 2:41Speaker 4: have thrown them in right away against you know, really
- 2:45Speaker 4: the first time I've ever seen anything like this where
- 2:48Speaker 4: a quarterbacks first four starts or against four of the
- 2:52Speaker 4: toughest defensive minds in the league. So it is exactly
- 2:56Speaker 4: what I expected. And that's that's why I would give
- 2:59Speaker 4: it an average grade because it's this is not a
- 3:02Speaker 4: surprise to me.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Did you expect the rushing game to look this impotent
- 3:06Speaker 3: with Boonix being the leading rusher through two weeks.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Well, if you're not going to challenge defenses to the
- 3:13Speaker 4: boundary or deep down the middle, they're going to be
- 3:16Speaker 4: more than willing to put as many defenders as possible
- 3:20Speaker 4: into the box. And that's exactly what's happened. I mean,
- 3:22Speaker 4: are are the Broncos threatening any defenses towards the boundaries
- 3:27Speaker 4: or deep medal? No, they're not. And I've talked to
- 3:31Speaker 4: defensive coaches who are on the Broncos schedule coming up,
- 3:35Speaker 4: and they say, until they show something, they're going to
- 3:39Speaker 4: do what everybody else is doing. And now good running
- 3:42Speaker 4: teams can run against the loaded box. I mean, that's
- 3:45Speaker 4: the greatest myth ever if the good running teams do it. Anyway,
- 3:49Speaker 4: but the best offense is in the league right now,
- 3:53Speaker 4: do two things. One of two things a lot of
- 3:56Speaker 4: pre snap motion or a lot of play action like
- 3:59Speaker 4: the New Orleans Saints leave the league in play action
- 4:02Speaker 4: right now, which is no shock with Clint Kubiak calling
- 4:06Speaker 4: the plays. The Broncos do neither of those things regularly.
- 4:10Speaker 4: So they're attempting to play offense a way that nobody
- 4:15Speaker 4: else really is right now, and they're not having much
- 4:18Speaker 4: success with it.
- 4:19Speaker 2: No, they're not Jeff. And now they've got a new
- 4:22Speaker 2: right tackle who's never played I don't think he's ever
- 4:26Speaker 2: played it down in the NFL. I correct about that,
- 4:29Speaker 2: I believe so.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I mean, it's just he's played more college football than
- 4:34Speaker 4: any human being I've ever encountered.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Though.
- 4:36Speaker 4: So Alex Bolcheski has played sixty five college games, and
- 4:42Speaker 4: I don't ever remember anybody in all my draft stuff
- 4:46Speaker 4: whoever even approached that number. Bo Nicks played sixty one
- 4:50Speaker 4: and he still didn't get to Pelchesk's total.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, so listen, I think these are precarious times for
- 4:56Speaker 2: the Denver Broncos. I really do.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I mean, I I told you guys in training camp
- 5:02Speaker 4: this was a thin roster and you're gonna see it now.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Well, you absolutely are. And I just again, every little
- 5:08Speaker 2: thing Jeff in regards to the growth and development of
- 5:11Speaker 2: the of the young quarterback, in my mind is a
- 5:14Speaker 2: factor that not that you know, everybody has guys who
- 5:16Speaker 2: get injured, but boil Boy. You know, if balls on
- 5:19Speaker 2: one side was banged up before and and had some
- 5:24Speaker 2: holding problems this past week, and now you've got a
- 5:26Speaker 2: rookie or essentially a rookie making his first career appearance
- 5:30Speaker 2: in an NFL game on the other side, I don't
- 5:32Speaker 2: know what to make of that, Jeff. I just I
- 5:34Speaker 2: guess I get fearful leading up to this two week
- 5:37Speaker 2: joint to the East Coast.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, they're gonna have to be I think
- 5:43Speaker 4: they you know, I said, I think they have to
- 5:46Speaker 4: be boring before they can be excited. And I think
- 5:48Speaker 4: they're gonna have to accept the fact they have a
- 5:51Speaker 4: rookie quarterback and play that way. You know, these first
- 5:55Speaker 4: two games, bo Netz has had eighty eight dropbacks. That's
- 5:59Speaker 4: third in the I mean, should that really be the
- 6:02Speaker 4: way the Broncos are playing offense and in games that
- 6:06Speaker 4: have been largely one or two score games all the
- 6:09Speaker 4: way through. In their defense is like third in the
- 6:13Speaker 4: league and scoring defense and you're zero and two. I mean,
- 6:17Speaker 4: I just this isn't on the defense. This isn't on
- 6:21Speaker 4: you know, much anything else other than I see them
- 6:26Speaker 4: calling games or the rookie quarterback like he's not. And
- 6:31Speaker 4: the longer they keep doing that, I think the more
- 6:34Speaker 4: frustrated they're gonna be, because I mean, if you look
- 6:37Speaker 4: his his footwork is already starting to have an impact
- 6:41Speaker 4: of frustration and being hit. You're seeing a lot of
- 6:46Speaker 4: you know, backfoot throws, leading out of throws, not stepping
- 6:52Speaker 4: up into a clean pocket. Those are all signs of
- 6:56Speaker 4: a quarterback who is young. This is I mean, this
- 6:59Speaker 4: is as common is anything in the league's history. This
- 7:03Speaker 4: is These are the growing pains, and I think that
- 7:07Speaker 4: the Broncos just have to do a better job of
- 7:11Speaker 4: managing the idea that they have a rookie quarterback and
- 7:15Speaker 4: to ask him to be anything other than that, I
- 7:18Speaker 4: think is is the wrong answer.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Jeff Lake welld ESPN dot Com with us. He joined
- 7:23Speaker 3: us in the Ramas Law hotline. Lay I said something yesterday.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Vick and moj both called me stupid. You tell me
- 7:30Speaker 3: if you think I'm still a filthy mouth.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Well whatever, Wow, Yeah.
- 7:35Speaker 3: So I'm not putting this on this guy for you know,
- 7:39Speaker 3: a lack of success offensively. All I'm saying is, when
- 7:41Speaker 3: Courtland Sutton is paid the amount of money he's paid,
- 7:44Speaker 3: which is the most in that wide receiver room, he
- 7:45Speaker 3: is tasked with being the number one white out on
- 7:47Speaker 3: the team. He's got to do a better job of
- 7:48Speaker 3: getting open and I don't think he's done that, and
- 7:50Speaker 3: that doesn't help your rookie, qb Am I being unfair
- 7:54Speaker 3: in assessing Courtland Sutton that way.
- 7:57Speaker 4: I think it's a little unfair because if you do
- 8:00Speaker 4: not most a lot of coaches I know, divide the
- 8:04Speaker 4: field in the six quadrants, if you're not throwing passes
- 8:08Speaker 4: into at least four of them, it is hard for
- 8:11Speaker 4: receivers to get open because the defenders gather where they
- 8:17Speaker 4: think the ball is going to be. And again, if
- 8:20Speaker 4: the Broncos aren't going to consistently challenge the boundaries on
- 8:25Speaker 4: the field and the deep middle, you know that they're
- 8:28Speaker 4: getting almost nothing from the tight end position. Bo Nicks
- 8:34Speaker 4: has not getting very accurate down the field and they're
- 8:37Speaker 4: not moving the ball into those areas. So where Courtland
- 8:41Speaker 4: Sutton can make plays, he's usually dealing with multiple defenders,
- 8:46Speaker 4: but none of their guys are really getting separation right now.
- 8:50Speaker 4: And I think some of that is just how many
- 8:52Speaker 4: defenders are crowding near the line of scrimmage A and
- 8:58Speaker 4: B know, I think the route tree is pretty limited
- 9:03Speaker 4: because again, they're not throwing to some parts of the field.
- 9:06Speaker 4: And I'm not just guessing on that. I've charted this
- 9:08Speaker 4: stuff and it's just not happening. And whether that's a
- 9:12Speaker 4: factor of they don't think Bonnicks can drive the ball
- 9:17Speaker 4: or hang in the pocket or have the time to
- 9:19Speaker 4: do it, they're just not doing it. So Purtland Sutton's
- 9:23Speaker 4: getting caught up in the wash. But they have had
- 9:27Speaker 4: four drop, four legitimate drops on passes in frame, and
- 9:32Speaker 4: you can't have those either, Jeff.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Let's establish something right now, Brett. Jeff laid it out
- 9:37Speaker 2: there very eloquently, which is why he's on this program. Yeah.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Do you believe him? Yes? Do you trust him?
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yes?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Do you accept his answer?
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yes?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Now, Jeff, I said the same thing yesterday, not nearly
- 9:48Speaker 2: as eloquently as you, and he told me to go
- 9:50Speaker 2: get bent. You said, you just said I had a
- 9:52Speaker 2: filthy mouth. You didn't make an eye because I said,
- 9:55Speaker 2: it's a dependent position, dude, and like I said, when
- 9:58Speaker 2: the ball gets there, Jeff, You're so right, there are
- 10:00Speaker 2: two in some's this is three dudes around Courtland Sutton, right,
- 10:04Speaker 2: like okay, it's got to be going to this guy,
- 10:06Speaker 2: right and and so they just crowd that area and
- 10:09Speaker 2: they're all over his bacon.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Well, and again, this is what happens when you know,
- 10:14Speaker 4: defenses treat you like wr one and that's what they're doing.
- 10:19Speaker 4: He's getting the most attention because the defenses aren't afraid
- 10:23Speaker 4: of anyone else. I mean, there's a reason Josh Reynolds
- 10:26Speaker 4: is at the other end of the trick play. You know,
- 10:28Speaker 4: there's a reason Josh Reynolds is at the other end
- 10:31Speaker 4: of the twenty six yard reception and you know, sort
- 10:34Speaker 4: of garbage time because Courtland Sutton is being treated like
- 10:38Speaker 4: the number one receiver by the defense. And that's the
- 10:42Speaker 4: attention he's getting. And until you think dig some of
- 10:46Speaker 4: those safeties out, you know, with a run game you're
- 10:50Speaker 4: committed to, or you know, a tight end that threatens
- 10:54Speaker 4: the middle of the field. You know, tell me brock
- 10:57Speaker 4: Bowers wouldn't look good in the Broncos uniform right now.
- 11:00Speaker 4: And I said it on draft days. So this is
- 11:03Speaker 4: in hindsight, I said they should have taken brought flowers
- 11:06Speaker 4: and could have gotten bow knicks. Anyway, that I will
- 11:09Speaker 4: die on that hill. Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Well, and yeah, with the way brock Bowers is playing
- 11:14Speaker 3: in Vegas too, almost one hundred yard game last week.
- 11:17Speaker 3: But you know, it's funny, like you mentioned, like not
- 11:20Speaker 3: taking shots into certain quadrants and not taking shots at
- 11:23Speaker 3: the boundary. The funny thing is there's one guy who
- 11:27Speaker 3: was wide open, if you remember, Marvin Mims, who only
- 11:30Speaker 3: played nine snaps, was running all by himself downfield and
- 11:33Speaker 3: then Bo Nicks threw it about five rows up in
- 11:35Speaker 3: the stands.
- 11:37Speaker 4: No that I mean, they're just not in sync. And again,
- 11:40Speaker 4: I you know we're all gonna look at the quarterback.
- 11:43Speaker 4: But again I think, look, there are four guys right now,
- 11:49Speaker 4: four in the NFL who do not have a touchdown pass.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Three of them are rookies. Yep. The fourth just got
- 11:56Speaker 4: benched in Bryce Young. So that tells you quarterback as
- 12:01Speaker 4: a rookie in the NFL as hard as hell. And
- 12:05Speaker 4: to expect him to not be a rookie. You should
- 12:08Speaker 4: not have eighty eight draft backs. I mean, what kind
- 12:10Speaker 4: of plan is having your rookie quarterback have eighty eight
- 12:14Speaker 4: draftbacks in two games. That's not a plan.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm getting depressed. I'm trying. I'm trying. I'm trying
- 12:25Speaker 2: to let me, Jeff, I'm trying to find some sort
- 12:27Speaker 2: of silver lining in all of this, and I understand
- 12:29Speaker 2: why it's happening, and you've laid it out perfectly. I
- 12:32Speaker 2: guess what I'm looking for. I haven't seen anything in
- 12:35Speaker 2: the first two weeks that other guys, the average quarterback
- 12:38Speaker 2: in the NFL can't do, okay, or or even backups
- 12:42Speaker 2: in this league can't do. I guess what I'm looking for,
- 12:45Speaker 2: Jeff is advancement. I'm looking for growth in Tampa, growth
- 12:50Speaker 2: in New York, growth at home against the Raiders. I
- 12:52Speaker 2: hope that I see it, but I don't feel very
- 12:54Speaker 2: good about the prospects. Do you.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Well again, if you're gonna have them drop back forty
- 13:01Speaker 4: sometimes against the Todd Bowles defense, I just don't think
- 13:06Speaker 4: that's a wise move. To me. The growth is I
- 13:12Speaker 4: just see like this massive denial by the Broncos that
- 13:15Speaker 4: they have a rookie quarterback. I know they think he's
- 13:19Speaker 4: advanced and mature and twenty four years old with sixty
- 13:23Speaker 4: one college games that he's ahead of other guys. I
- 13:26Speaker 4: get it, But Caleb Williams doesn't have a touchdown pass either.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Jadan Daniels doesn't have a touchdown pass either. I mean,
- 13:35Speaker 4: the three of the guys starting as rookies don't have
- 13:38Speaker 4: touchdown passes, and there's a reason for that, and you
- 13:41Speaker 4: have to play your way around it as an offense.
- 13:44Speaker 4: I mean, you made the decision to throw the kid
- 13:47Speaker 4: in the deep end of the pool. Now you got
- 13:50Speaker 4: to help him swim, and having him drop back eighty
- 13:52Speaker 4: eight times in two games. It's a personal opinion. Plenty
- 13:57Speaker 4: of folks with the Broncos are going to tell me
- 13:59Speaker 4: I'm wrong and that I'm full of craft, but I
- 14:02Speaker 4: just don't think eighty eight dropbacks is the pace you
- 14:05Speaker 4: want to be on after two games.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Just twenty seconds here leaking and appreciate the time. You're
- 14:10Speaker 3: talking about brock powers and how good he would look here.
- 14:13Speaker 2: I agree with you. What's the situation with dulcig here?
- 14:16Speaker 3: Because we have high hopes for Dulcage, but you had
- 14:18Speaker 3: a couple of brutal drops last week.
- 14:21Speaker 4: That's what meaning. It's just everyone's out of sync because
- 14:24Speaker 4: there's no rhythm I mean, I mean how the Broncos
- 14:28Speaker 4: really put together drives in the first two games. They're
- 14:31Speaker 4: very choppy, and I think everyone is out of sorts.
- 14:36Speaker 4: And I always caution people there are human beings in
- 14:40Speaker 4: the helmets, and they press too. They never admit it,
- 14:44Speaker 4: They never admit to being nervous, they never admit to
- 14:46Speaker 4: being tense. But there's an awful lot of people on
- 14:50Speaker 4: offense with the Broncos that are pressing right now because
- 14:53Speaker 4: they feel what everyone else fields, that they're not getting
- 14:56Speaker 4: the ball in the end zone, and that they spent
- 14:59Speaker 4: a a lot of time in training camp, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 4: throwing out some expectations that they would.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Jeff legwallt ESPN dot Com joined us every Thursday. Thank you, Leg,
- 15:08Speaker 3: I appreciate the time.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go drink some hemlock. Thanks, Bud,
- 15:12Speaker 2: appreciate it.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Wow, you you really are emotionally involved.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Jeff, it's been okay, excuse me, you know it's been Jeff,
- 15:22Speaker 2: it's been a.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Decade games I've done along with you.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Do me a favor. The last thing. You let me
- 15:29Speaker 2: know when it's okay for me to to start chirping
- 15:33Speaker 2: up my boy Zach Wilson to get him in there
- 15:35Speaker 2: and actually move the damn football. You let me know
- 15:37Speaker 2: when it's okay. Is that week? Is that week five?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Is that week ten? I don't care. He's got the
- 15:42Speaker 2: biggest arm on the damn roster and he's just sitting
- 15:44Speaker 2: there doing nothing but chewing his chewing his gum, sitting
- 15:48Speaker 2: there with his teeth in his mouth.
- 15:50Speaker 4: But you know, I think, uh, you know, it's there's
- 15:53Speaker 4: I can't ever remember an NFL team taking a road
- 15:55Speaker 4: trip like the Broncos are gonna take here.
- 15:58Speaker 2: But we didn't get to ask you if you're staying
- 15:59Speaker 2: at the Green Rier two at seven bills a night?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Yeah, what do you think? All right? Enjoy the Super eight, Yeah.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Jeff Lakewall the all the conversations with leg you brought
- 16:13Speaker 3: to by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ib e
- 16:15Speaker 3: W Local sixty eight.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Start with a job and with a career.
