- 0:00SPEAKER_00: We went back to the beginning, Amanda, where we're all started.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: So we need to tell the story of us.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Because that's where we met.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: We met, and that's exactly 10 years ago.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: We met 10 years ago because this year would have been nine years after we graduated.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And then another thing that we talk about was they were talking about how boys suck.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And how UCSV, there's not husband material, boys that they can date, it impact one of them.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Look at all of us where we're at, and somehow we're all turned out well.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: We met our best friends in college.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: We met our best friends where you are right now.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: In the year that you are right now.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And it's 10 years later, and we're still best friends.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Summertime, as we just moved in, and I remember these random people like knocked on the door and asked us that if it was okay for us to let them kind of go back into the house.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: They were like, oh, we're alumni.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And so many years, like they also were like, oh, like nine years ago or something.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking, I remember sitting there and thinking, these people need to find a life.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Why are you coming back to your college life?
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Her boyfriend spent the summer with her, and then he was a senior, and then he left, and the next day he broke up with her or something.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So they were just telling us all of these stories, right?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Because we need to go back into our 20s, our early 20s, and I kind of want to do a retrospect about how was our mindset back then, and what we define as success, and how that changed over the years, and what do we define as success now?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: This episode is definitely it can be for the early 20s, the girls that are in transition, about to graduate from college, and this just really hit the real world.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, I have a funny story for you.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: How are you?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: We haven't talked in a while.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It's been a minute.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: I know, I'm good.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm about to pick up work travel though, so I'm like dreading that.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: You've been off like off traveling for a couple of weeks.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: It has been so nice.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I've had like three weeks of no travel, and then starting tomorrow, I start traveling again every week.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: But in the three weeks that I've had, I've been able to re-regulate my nervous system, and I it's the least anxious I've been.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: And I finally like got back into a Pilates routine, and I was going weekly, and I was working out, and I know it's been so nice, and I'm so sad that it's about to be all like chaotic again, and now I don't know like what days I am home, and yeah.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: That's when you know that diety and your nervous system is literally your body yelling at you that you need to have it reset.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Slow down, slow down.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: But hopefully, yeah, we don't talk about that now, but hopefully things change in the future for us.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I'm good, I'm insane.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: I love my job in terms of what I do, and also honestly, I'm at the point of my job where I can just easily do it.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So I am also able to work in my side hassle, which is this podcast and doing a bunch of other projects that I really want to start doing.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And so I kind of love being in the office.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Once I'm there, well, I really love being here.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: I am so productive from doing so many things, but the commute is just so unwell that it's just not worth it to me.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And so in last week, it's even so long.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: It's so long, and last week was even worse because Noah, my boyfriend, was here and he lives in Monterey.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So Monterey, it's uh from my house, it's about almost two hours from my work, which is closer to south, is one hour, it's one hour and 20 minutes without traffic.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: But of course, that's because I'll be commuting would have been traffic.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: So on the way from and so I told myself I have to do it because I literally will have the worst fumble in VL if I know that he's here, and I'm already not being able to spend time with him during the day because I'm working.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So the fact that oh my god, I cannot go home and know that he's there and I'm not gonna see him.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So I told myself, it's okay, I'll go and commute.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: His family I would have done that too.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and his family was thrilled.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna be here every day.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And they're like, oh, welcome in, like all of that.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And he was excited that I was there.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: But I would wake up at 5 a.m.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: in the morning on Monday.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: It was an hour and 20 minutes because the reason why I left that early is so I wouldn't sit in traffic.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So I don't start until 8.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: But I would get to my work at 7, so an hour earlier, but I would not hit any traffic, it would be a smooth sailing.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And then the first couple of days my boss was around, so I had to leave until 4.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: And at that time, it's just sitting in traffic for two hours.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: So I would get to his house at 6 p.m.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And then it was just to spend a few hours with him because I would have to go to bed early just so to do it all over again the next day.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: But it was so worth it because he was waiting for me and we'll eat dinner together, and it's just it's just super worth it.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't have it any other way.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I was super lucky though, because my boss, for some reason, he had this golf tournament Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, so he was not there.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I just came on Wednesday for a little bit and then just left and didn't go back.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: I'm working for mom.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: I'm giving my days.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: The universe got me, it's fine.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And it's just annoying because I was telling people I literally got everything done.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: All of my projects.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I had two projects done due on Friday.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Everything done, and it was fine.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And I was telling them how I was able to spend time with my boyfriend, I was able to go on a run.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: He lives by the ocean.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: So I was able to live my day, get coffee, do all these things.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: We had we had a happy hour at 5 p.m.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: and just be part of everything.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm still doing all of my projects and doing the things that I needed to do.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: So it was nice, but I'm like, this is the life that I yeah, it sounds like you had a productive week, both like personal life and work life.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you can totally do everything.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I believe you can do everything.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: I love working, but at the same time, it's just being able to, oh, I want people to let me go on this walk at by the ocean.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: I know that not everyone lives by the ocean.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: That is such a privilege.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: But even if you don't, just being able to just get up and walk around or do anything, or do whatever you love.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: People, some people don't even like walking.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: But I don't know, it's when I'm there, this is what life is about.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I know we always talk about this, but it's just uh I it just got me motivated, and I was like, I need to go back into my work routine and continue trying to find an opportunity that really serves me.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So that's what I've been doing.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, find something that fulfills your personal life as well.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: But speaking of beaches, you went back to our college town and you also saw the house that we lived in senior year, which is crazy.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: We went back to the beginning, Amanda, where we're all started.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So we need to tell the story of us because that's where we met.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: We met, and that's exactly 10 years ago.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: We met 10 years ago because this year would have been nine years after we graduated.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: And long story short, you guys were in a sorority, and you guys kind of monopolized this house by the ocean, by UCSB, and all of the sororities, senior girls would always get the house on their senior year.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: When we started living there, we were not part of the sorority.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: You you found us.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you were like the outsiders that joined this senior house.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Senior house.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And so we little did we know we're gonna move in with 10 other girls.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So it was 13 of us total, because it was three girls that were not in the sorority.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And I just knew the moment I moved in, I knew it was gonna be the best year of my life in college.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: To the point that I remember I was dating somebody in LA, and I've talked about this before, and I told myself, okay, either I'm gonna marry this dude or we need to be done.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Because I'm out of what does he have intermission for our third co-host?
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: He makes an appearance, um, and he seems to have a cone.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Is he okay?
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: He does, yeah.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: He had a little bit of an inspection that we needed to make sure he didn't mess with anymore.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: But he decided he wanted to play such with me right now, which is very inconvenient.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: His little boy is concentrated.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: He just keeps dropping it on me.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, continue though.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Best year of our life, which it really was.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Senior year was really fun.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And I'm so happy because I remember I was okay, I need to just fully be here, fully be at UCSB.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: I loved everyone in the house, and we just had so much fun.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, it's just I feel I'll always remember that year that went by so fast.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: But something that I want to tell is I remember summertime as we just moved in, and I remember these random people knocked on the door and asked us if it was okay for us to let them kind of go back into the house.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: They were like, oh, we're an alumni, and so many years.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: They also were, oh, nine years ago or something.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking, I remember sitting there and thinking, these people need to find a life.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Why are you coming back to your college life?
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: That's just crazy.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, I remember them coming in too.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: And I remember I understood because I also was, well, this is an amazing house.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: And honestly, to be able to have this kind of living outside of if it's not college and living with a million people, is probably very, very impossible unless you, you know, eventually just have like an amazing job, but that will probably take years.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: And so I got it and we let them in.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: They walked in.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: I think I don't I think it was like a few boys, everything.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: What was I I think there were a couple groups that came in, and I think the one that had graduated further away, more more years in between.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: I think they were a group of guys, but I remember another group coming in at some point.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there was a couple.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: There was a couple.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: And so I think at that point we were really used to it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: So we just open the door and then we'll just walk in and then tell us about some people, some people would engage with them and talk to them, and they go back.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: And I remember they always want to see the die table, the beer die table, and they also want to go into the kitchen because we lived the second floor, the kitchen was towards the ocean.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: So you get the most amazing views.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Fast forward to 10 years later.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Honestly, I went with my boyfriend to Santa Barbara earlier this year, and I kept thinking, I really want to show him the house.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: I wish I could just walk in.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: However, going with your boyfriend and knowing that this is gonna be a house with a bunch of girls, it feels a little inappropriate.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: So I was like, we're not gonna do this.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: But I did show him where we lived and kind of just give him the tour.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Two weekends ago, all of our friends got together because we were celebrating one of our friends' bachelorette.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And she wanted to do it back in Santa Barbara.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: She met her soon-to-be husband in Oj, which is really close to Santa Barbara as well.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And so she thought that it was just precious and she needed to just bring us back.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: So we hang out there, and as we're leaving Santa Barbara, so we're going to Oj that weekend because we're gonna do another celebration there.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: We're like, let's just go back to A La Vista and walk around and see the house and see who lives there.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking, this is it.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: We have 10 girls, this is not overwhelming.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: We had a bag of white cloths that we brought in, and we're like, we just give this away.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: They're gonna say yes.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: College people were always never say no to alcohol, so that was and so we walked in, and I don't know, I have to show you the videos.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I think the outside is definitely different.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I think they painted it.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: It also looks so much smaller than what I remember it.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I remember it being bigger, but I just being on even just in the front parking area, parking lot area, it looked very small.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Also, did we have it was not a big house?
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Like it wasn't.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: No, I think very, very tight.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in my bedroom, because we had three queen beds in there, or I think they were full beds, so a little less than a queen bed.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: There's like three inches difference or something.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: I think that there was only about three to four feet of walking room between the beds.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I remember going into your room.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it's just very long, but just very thin.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Do you remember?
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Do we had a door?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: What I'm talking about is, you know, in the parking lot area, there is a pathway that you walk in outside of the house to go into the door.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: There was a door there to go into that pathway.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: There was a big thing.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was a gate.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was a gate because I remember I'm pretty sure because I remember there being raccoons out there one time.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: I just don't know if we maybe there wasn't.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: I don't think there was because people would always just walk in.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Because this one time.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: People were just like walked in because they're weird.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: I I don't think I think there was a gate.
- 13:30SPEAKER_01: But when you but there was no, I don't think there was a gate because there Yeah, but there had to be because we were having parties and we had to have somebody man the door.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: So we had to have a way that was preventing them from getting in.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, but then why would people always walk in?
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: That is crazy because for us, when I saw that close, I was like, we shouldn't go in.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: We just we look over.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: We still don't go in, we still did go in without everybody letting us in.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: But I'm just saying when you see a gate, it kind of keeps people away.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: And I literally have no recollection of that gate.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was there, I don't know.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So we walked in, right?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: We started saying, hello, anybody, nobody answers.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Go towards the end.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: We definitely want to see the beer day table.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: So we go to the end.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: One of our friends, who's the outspoken one, and she was the president of our the sorority, the senior year.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take over, let me grab the white clothes, I'm gonna offer them to the girls.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And then she went to the balcony area and she just called them over, and then she started talking to them, and they're like, Oh my god, yeah, absolutely.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Get in.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: So they opened the door, there were three girls in there, and then we saw our room, which was the garage, that I was the girls, one of the girls in the garage, which now they made it look pretty cute.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: There's only two girls in there, but yeah, no, I it it looks exactly the same.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: But I always just remember it looks kind of cozy, and it was just I it was the best.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: But it still looks the same.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Then we went upstairs and the house.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: It looks exactly the same in what used to be one of our Becca's rooms.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: Apparently, Lauren Atkinson and some of our friends they put their initials in those stairs that are made out of wood.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And let's go look and if they're if it's still there, and it was there, and it says Lauren Atkinson and all of their names.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: So that was really cute.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And that that was already, if the girls were thinking that we were not real, we were like, okay, this is a testament that we actually lived here.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: But the reason why I'm telling this story is because we stand in the kitchen and we just started talking.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And obviously, the girls that are living there are seniors, they're starting their senior year, and then we just started talking, girls that just like girls, right?
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: It doesn't no age, no nothing.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: We're just started bonding, and we started talking about school and life and boys and just crazy.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: So what it stood out the most was that they were definitely they're in a place where they're thinking about their future, they're about to graduate, they have they're in their fields, they're in their last year of school.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: They're also coming out into a market that is very tough, right?
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: When we came out, AI didn't exist, life was defin definitely different.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: I never felt I was scared, I never felt uncertainty.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I didn't really know exactly where I was gonna go, but I think we were just all trying to figure it out.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: And I think they're going through that plus the added thing of the uncertainty of what's going on, because you know, things are really changing drastically within months and years.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: So I think that's a huge thing.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: And then another thing that we talk about was they were talking about how boys suck and how UCSV, there's not husband material boys that they can date, and in fact, one of them has just been broken up.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Um her boyfriend spent the summer with her, and then he was a senior, and then he left, and the next day he broke up with her or something.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: So they were just telling us all of these stories, right?
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And it was funny because literally, I think it was 10 of us.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Well, there were other girls from that didn't go to school, but I think what it was like seven of us, and out of those seven, three of the girls that were there met their boyfriends in UCSV, and it just happened at different times, but we were telling them, you think that it's not gonna happen, but literally look at the ads.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: It's almost 40% of our group of friends did meet their boyfriends at UCSV, and so we started talking about the parallels how I don't know, like for me, I was listening to them talk, and it kind of just took me back into my past, and I kind of just had a little bit of a memory walk into memory lane, it's because it's called and it was just really nice to see oh my god, where have I been this nine years?
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: One time I was these girls who was what can happen.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: We were all dating, we were all trying to figure out what's gonna happen, and then now everyone in our group such a babies, but also all of us turn out well.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: And I looked around in the room at all of our friends.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: We were there because we're celebrating one of our friends' bachelorette, and she's about to get married, and I look at all of our friends, and I think you can really say we all made it and we are all very happy in the places that we are right now.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: And that is not to say that there was no struggle throughout the years, like there were up and downs.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: But I told them, like, guys, I was talking to the girls, and I was like, look at the ads, look at all of us where we're at, and somehow we're all turned out well.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: We met our best friends in college, we met our best friends where you are right now, in the year that you are right now, and it's 10 years later, and we're still best friends, and so they were like, Oh my god, like this is so crazy, and it just it like it was so cool because they were able to kind of see their future, and we were able to see the past.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And I just thought that it was an interesting concept because for them it's more so like an adjustment of attitude of like, yeah, everything seems uncertain, but you're gonna make you're gonna be fine.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: You know, somehow you're gonna figure it out, you're gonna live a lot of things, life is gonna throw you a bunch of things, and then that's gonna help you grow, and it's gonna get you where you're at.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: And then for us, seeing the difference and seeing how far we've gone, and sometimes you need to get that reference point to realize all of the things that you've accomplished.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: And the reason why I'm saying that is because even though right now we're in such a good place, you and me are okay, but we need to optimize, and you know, we're looking for something better, and like we're kind of always optimizing, but it felt really good to stand in a place that stands still, that doesn't change, and see how far we've gone.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: And so I think it's really oh I go ahead.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: I was just gonna say it was a really, really fun experience and nostalgic and everything.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: I got older feels.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, I think it's so easy too for us to be in the place we're at now, a decade later, and maybe the job's not perfect, maybe the living situation's not perfect, the boy, that whatever it is, you know, in anybody's life.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: And it can be so easy to not feel things are good, but then hearing how you were back where you were when we were 20, 21.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: For me, I turned 21 in that house.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Like I remember my 21st birthday, and being in that place where you don't know what your job's gonna look like, you don't know what your career is going to look like, you don't know who you're gonna end up, where you're gonna be, what city, like all of these life paths, and journey that you have no idea.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: I think if I were you and I was standing in our kitchen, I think I would feel like I went out of my body that was watching the situation and being that was me.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: I was little baby 21-year-old wearing crop tops and high-waisted shorts, which I hate and refuse to wear.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, now too.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, oh my god, say in dirty brat converse and the end of the world is like your midterm, right?
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: And your final suite, but having no idea what the next 10 years are gonna do.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: And that house was great.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Looking back, like being able, yeah, and having the opportunity to wake up every day and have the ocean there and the dolphins, and it's just I mean, we'll never get that specific year back.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And I'm so grateful for it.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: And I hope that for them being able to see the relationships that you guys have been able to build ten years later was also really inspiring because it's true.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I mean Most of the girls that we live with in that house we're still in contact with and we still see each other, which is amazing.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: How who else can say that?
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: I just say sometimes it's easy to say things are gonna be fine, right?
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Hope for the best.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: What's that saying?
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Keep the vision, trust the process, right?
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: What was happening in that moment?
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Literally, I think it was seven.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: It was hold on.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Lauren, Lauren, Erica, me, that's four.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Yos and Brett, that's six.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Alexia, seven.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I think that was the seven girls.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Seven out of seven are doing great things.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: And if you would have been there, it would have been eight out of eight.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: There is no one of our friends.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And of course, like I said, it's not perfect.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: This isn't to show off or anything.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying the odds that things are gonna be okay are pretty high.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: And that's what I was trying to tell the girls because they were saying, you know, talking about understanding.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Are they worried about that?
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: They were just, you know, and this is what we wanted to talk about today.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Because we need to go back into our 20s, our early 20s, and I kind of want to do a retrospect about how was our mindset back then, and what we define as success, and how that changed over the years, and what do we define as success now?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Because listening to them talk, you said, I flew out of my body.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: I was just watching this whole thing, and I was just like, wait, is this what we were like?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Is this how we sounded?
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: And there's nothing wrong about it, but I don't know.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: The mother or big sister in me came out and I was telling them, girls, because they were saying a little bit about, oh, we would love to stay in Saramara, but there's no jobs here, and blah blah.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: And I was like, What do you mean?
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: There's Appfolio, there's Yardi, there's a bunch of apps, there's a bunch of huge companies that now back 10 years ago, they were just startups.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Well, Yardi was a long time ago, but Appfolio has just IPO.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: That was my first job out of college.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: And they were like, oh my god, those companies are around here.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Yeah, you guys, like we have huge companies in Santa Barbara.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: We have Sunny, we have just a bunch of things.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: And I just thought of that out of air.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: I wasn't even like, I didn't even do research, that's just what I knew.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: And who knows what else is there.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying Santa Barbara is the best place to stay to grow your career, but I was saying at the very least to get you started.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: And so their faces were just like, oh my God, I had no idea about this, right?
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: And then when I thought that when they were talking about the men thing, I was like, Well, guys, three out of the our three out of seven found their husbands here in Santa Barbara.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Husbands.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Literally, they're we're celebrating, no, well, she didn't meet him there, but the other three, and they have been really great, successful relationships.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: They just got married, they're doing great, right?
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: It's also a shift because if you think that every single guy is just out to get you, then all you're gonna attract is very not great man.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: And so I just think that that kind of mindset even goes on after even after college.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: And if you ask anybody, they're like, this city, whatever city they're at, is like the worst city for dating.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: But is it your mindset or is it what you're attracting and what kind of like where you're where you're at?
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And again, we're just saying this because I just thought it was very interesting.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: What I really want to emphasize is they were able to see that the odds are all in their favor.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: If you were to put our lives as an example right in front of their faces.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they were able to see that it all works out.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: And it's funny thinking about even the boy thing, it's like the reality is you have to kiss a lot of frogs.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: That's just why and I think it's bad anywhere, whether you're in college or you're not.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: I actually I don't remember feeling some sort of way about college dating, but I think our time in college, maybe it was just the culture.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, like things were just kind of different.
- 26:11SPEAKER_01: There wasn't a lot of pressure on like finding a boyfriend.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: Like you had your date parties and you were just having fun.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: And then the job thing, I mean, 10 years ago, like Santa Barbara was so different than what it is now.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: And a lot of those companies you mentioned, they were just starting there.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: And now they're so established.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: And I see jobs in Santa Barbara even now to this day.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Um and maybe the market's not as good as in LA or New York or now North Carolina and some of these emerging markets, Houston, Dallas.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: But I mean, a large group of you guys stayed in Santa Barbara, right?
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: You guys lived there post-college, you guys got good jobs, and that was the start of your career to your point.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Everyone's in a really good place now, and it just it just depends on where you want to go.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: And so I kind of yeah, just wanted to explore that because this episode is definitely it can be for early 20s, the girls that are in transition, about to graduate from college, and just really hit the real world.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: And just, I mean, truly, it's just to put in perspective that you're gonna be okay.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: The transitions are gonna happen, there's gonna be huge moves.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: You don't even I don't think we ever expected where we were gonna end.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Like you never thought you were gonna move to New York.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you did, uh, but it's just a lot of the things that happen, there's just it is so hard to plan specifically for the future and for it to work out just exactly how you wanted it.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: And I just remember back to your point about dating in college.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: I just remember thinking, yeah, the same.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: I wasn't, oh my god, I need to find my husband.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: I was so focused on just being in the present because I knew that year was gonna go by so fast that I knew in my heart that I needed to just live it up and to just and not even because we were not even I don't even remember dating.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Like we were just we were spending so much time with each other, all the girls.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, right?
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Like the girl time, like I think that's almost I I wasn't even thinking about that.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I think that's so much more important because yeah, earlier too, you mentioned kind of going back to our headspace when we were that age and what we were thinking.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: And and I know that we were coming up on graduation, so it was like, well, what's next?
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: What job, or do we continue education and all of that?
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: And and I thought I was gonna be married and have kids by 26.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Like, jokes on me.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: But outside of that, it's kind of like take a moment because everyone told me, like, you'll never get your college years back, and you really won't.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: So your senior year is your last year to really take that all in, and and things will work out.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: And one of my friends worked at a restaurant off of State Street, so in downtown Santa Barbara post-college, and she was there for a while, and she has a fantastic corporate job now.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Like, who would have thought?
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: But I will say it's because everything happens and everything is a learning experience.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: And I do think that another thing that I was gonna touch is there's a lot of pressure when you graduate, and even if society or your parents are not the ones putting you pressure, there is this pressure on yourself because now you have to deliver on so much investment that they have put on you over the years.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: I think it's going back to turning towards yourself and learning and growing into the person that you really want to become and embracing your unique self and rediscovering who you are.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Because I think that's what's gonna get you closer.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: Now, going back to your example about the restaurant, who says that working at a restaurant is not extremely important for your career path?
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: I work in restaurants when I was in community college because I was saving to go to a four-year university.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Guess where I got my first customer service experience?
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: I knew how to talk to people, I knew how to handle difficult moments, and I talk about that till this day when I go into an interview, and I know how to talk to people because guess what?
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: The most annoying clients are gonna be the people in the restaurant that are not happy.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: And you need to learn how to manage their expectations, how to project manage everyone to make sure that everyone is served and make sure that everyone is happy.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: And when the morale is that the customer has customer is always right, then you have to do your best to make sure that you're doing your job.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: And I remember my first job, my first corporate job after college was outfolio, and it was in the onboarding team.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: So I was working with clients every single day on calls, showing value after they just purchased a very expensive tech product, and it wasn't different.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: They were mad, they were unsatisfied, they had there were a lot of issues with the tech that they were using.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: So everything serves you.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And so I just think that you need to take the pressure off and almost, I think, no knowing what you want to do leaves more open opportunity for you to find what truly you want.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes those expectations keep you from really going the extra mile, getting out of your comfort zone, and just keeps you tiny.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: It keeps you from growing when really there is a limit opportunity for you out there.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: I actually love that you mentioned that you don't have to have it all figured out, and I think that's such a fantastic point because I mean, I think we know a couple people, everyone knows someone who has always known what job they were going to do, and they had a really clear path set out for them.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: But I would say majority of the people I know did not have a clear path, and me being one of them, I went into college undeclared.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: I chose my major later on.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do after school.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, I had a psych degree.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: I was like, do I want to go to more school and get a master's or look at being a psychiatrist or psychologist or any of those?
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Am I going to go to grad school?
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: Am I going to pursue therapy?
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: And I didn't know.
- 32:27SPEAKER_01: And instead, I just kind of chased an intuition on what I wanted to do.
- 32:32SPEAKER_01: And eventually my career changed.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: And same thing for the girls that are going through that now.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: It's like you don't have to have it all figured out.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: And I think you made it through senior year and you graduated, and that in itself was an accomplishment.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: And hearing you talk about your weekend there and being able to go back in the house, it sounds it really gave you a perspective on where you are now, being able to be appreciative of the time when we were 10 years ago in this house with 12 other girls, which is crazy.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: 13 totals.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: And then being able to see how far you've come on that journey and that everything does work out because I think it's so easy to get caught up in the the what-ifs and the stress of things.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: But it sounds like it was very enlightening.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: It was, and I loved it.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: And I hope that I was talking about this with the other girls because we really got deep.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: I think we were talking with the girls for an hour, and honestly, I really hope that this conversation stays with them.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: I wish that somebody from the Fruiter could.
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: It's like almost like somebody from the future came talk to me in the past, and they were like gonna be okay, you're gonna be fine.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: You're gonna make it, you're gonna do this job, you're gonna kiss a lot of frogs.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: And then on this year, you're gonna, you're gonna be well, you're gonna be good.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: So just trust the process, just you know, enjoy the process, enjoy every single moment, every up and every down, and all the opportunities that present itself.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: And at the core, as long as you are true to yourself, you are gonna end up where you're meant to be.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: And I feel those were the conversations that I told them.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: And I I am gonna be honest, if I would have had sisters and they were younger, I probably would have been the person that is gonna be telling them what they don't want to hear in love, love.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: But I was listening and you know, they they were kind of complaining.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: And I mean, obviously that one girl was heartbroken.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, she opened up to us, she's like, Yeah, my boyfriend, I'm just recently coming off a breakup and all of that.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: And I was, dude, he did you a favor.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Imagine you being with this dude for your whole senior year, you're not having the time of your life, and then this dude comes and ends it with you at the end of your senior year.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: That would have been sad.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: I thought her, he did you a favor, he just gave you open range, you can just have so much fun in college.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: You're still like it's August, it's still summer for her.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Summer, girly, you're like, you're gonna have so much fun, and then that is what I told her.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I was and you need to approach, don't date, just literally enjoy your life, enjoy this house, be with your friends, go out, meet people, and don't take it serious.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: It's not that serious until it actually gets serious.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: And when you shift that mindset, you're gonna have so much fun.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: I never honestly, I never had a bad time dating.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: It never got to the point where maybe I'm lucky, but I just feel I never I never put too much pressure or made it so serious.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: Of course, there's moments where I was, oh, like I really need this person and it didn't work out.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: And there was a couple that I really liked.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: But I think that I always when I was meeting people, I was also getting to know another piece of myself.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: And even if it didn't work out, I just kind of unleash a different set version of myself that I didn't even know.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: And so when you keep it fun like that, and when you always take the added value of that experience with you, it always is worth it.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: It's not a waste of time.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: And every time I dated somebody, I think it gave me a lesson.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: I learned so much that I was able to, when the right person walked into my life, be able to not make the same mistakes that I did, be super aware of some of my habits and the things that would probably sabotage my relationship.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: And the right person will be by you and you will know how to handle yourself through all of these experiences.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: I think it's safe to say, Amanda, that a lot of your experiences probably set you up for success for the relationship that you are right now, right?
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: And to your point, I think that if you can find the lesson in it, it's a lot easier to digest and figure out like how to process that and how to move forward.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: But I mean, yeah, I I I think I've had a lot of dates that were nothing.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: But you can't let that get to you.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Like there's a reason why.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: There's a reason why those doors were not meant for you.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: And we're happier where we're at right now.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: How do we want to wrap this up?
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: I've got to be able to do that.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm losing daylight over here.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: I think that was really what we wanted to touch based on because I think it was such a fabulous experience.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: If you guys can, and we're talking to people that have been graduated for many years, and you can go back to your college and back to your house and you have that connection.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Please do.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: I feel like this is therapy.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: It's so fun to be able to reminisce on the past.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: I think a walk down memory lane is so healthy.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: It's so fun.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: It's so healthy.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: I think this this is the homework.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: People should do it.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: Please do that because it really gives you a perspective of where you are in life now.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you really do need that reminder.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Wow, I have accomplished a lot.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: It doesn't honestly, I mean that for a second when I was standing in that room, I forgot what I did this past nine years.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, I have a funny story for you.
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: I was like, wait, I kind of for a moment went back into when I was, and I was, what how did I end up here?
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: It's so crazy.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: So the girls were talking to us about there's this huge party that happens at UCSV called Deltopia, and it's a day rage, and it's just intense.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: People come out of town and it's just parties everywhere, and it's crazy.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: Well, now Deltopia is no longer a thing.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: They already took out Deltopia from UCSB.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: I think I saw that in the news.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: And so they were saying how, yeah, it was it just got really out of control because a lot of out of towners, and they were saying how a bunch of older people will come in and they started talking about ew, 30-year-old man, they were just hanging out with me.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: And all of us go, ew, that's gross, like 30-year-old man.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: And then all of a sudden, I'm like, no, but this is what I'm telling you that I was like, wait, how old am I?
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Because I was completely vibing.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: I was like, ew, that was gross.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: That's old man, like that's disgusting, right?
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: And then all of a sudden, I don't know who it turns out.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: It's like, ew, that's gross.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: 30-year-old man, that's only our boyfriends and our husbands.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh my god, that's crazy.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: We're in our third, and I don't know why.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: I just like had a glitch moment.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, all of our boyfriends, and I was dying because it was hilarious.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I think it's really fun to.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, one, we always talk about don't lose that young person because I think we'll forever have that inner child.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: We're always gonna be young inside, but it's nice to have a reminder that once we were in a point in our lives where things weren't that serious, where we didn't have anything figured out and we didn't have that much responsibility.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: We have so much responsibility now.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: And we're building up families and you know, growing into our own little communities.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: And with that comes a lot of responsibility.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: But I think it's so important to remember who you were when those things weren't part of your life.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Because it really that gives you perspective and it's a reminder of what's important, which is you're here, you can be happy, you can choose to be happy.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: I think at the very least, you can very much say that you're in a better stage in your life, whether that's huge or that's little.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: But I just think that it's always nice to see that and be grateful because yeah, it's just I I really think that it's a perspective and it's a mindset.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: If you're not in that type of mindset, it's something that you can always work on.
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: And I think that there's always a positive turnaround on things if you change the way of your thinking and how you go about things.
- 40:48unknown: Yeah.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: That is kind of like the conclusion for me.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: I was gonna yeah, I was gonna add to that, just like for you, and I think for anyone too, going back to a place that was so good in your life is like a nice reminder of of who you were when it was a little bit more lighthearted and easier.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: And sometimes we just need that, and that's okay.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: But Laura, I'll let you take it from here, tell people where to follow us, like, comment, message, all of that.

- 41:39SPEAKER_00: But we really, really want to start hearing from the community.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: It's super easy and it's made very easy to just connect with us.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: You already know where to find us, but I think that's gonna be my call to action because I really want to start hearing from people and start building that community.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: Now we're literally everywhere.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: All of the streamers are on all of the apps that were doing podcasts.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: Now they're syndicating video, and so YouTube now already jumped on that.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: So we're on YouTube, we're on Spotify, we're on Apple.
