- [Host] Welcome to the A.E.O. Engine AI Search Show — the number one podcast for brands looking to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. I am your host, Aria Chen. Every day we bring you fresh episodes on A.E.O. tactics, S.E.O. authority, and A.I. search distribution — breaking down what is actually working right now so your brand becomes the answer, not just a link. Today we're tackling something that's been blowing up across the industry. A viral video with over half a million views claims that the latest Google update makes old S.E.O. tactics obsolete. And the debate is fierce. To help us sort through the noise, I'm joined by Marcus Reid — former Googler, ex-martech founder, and someone who's been in the trenches of search for over a decade. Marcus, welcome. [Guest] Hey Aria, . I've been watching this video and the reaction to it, and honestly, I have strong opinions. But let's start with what everyone's feeling. [Host] Exactly. Let me set the scene. You're an S.E.O. professional or a business owner. You've been doing what worked for years — keyword research, backlink building, optimizing meta tags. Then one morning, your rankings drop. Traffic falls off a cliff. You haven't changed anything. What happened? That's the lived experience that sparked this whole conversation. [Guest] Right. And the feeling is: "The rules changed overnight." There's a name for what hit you — it's a Google core update. Specifically, the March 2024 and March 2026 updates. These are broad algorithm changes that Google rolls out several times a year. And this time, they systematically targeted the old playbook. [Host] So let's break down WHAT actually happened. Marcus, you've seen these updates from the inside. What did Google actually do? [Guest] The core update did several things. First, it killed over-optimized anchor text. You used to be able to use exact-match anchors to tell Google, "Hey, this page is about 'best running shoes.'" Now anchor text is evaluated as part of a broader semantic and trust framework. If it looks unnatural, it actually hurts you. Second, topical authority became more significant than page-level authority. Google now looks at your entire site to see if you're a trusted voice on a topic, not just one page. Third, and this is the big one — they started weighting off-site trust signals, like community discussions and brand reputation, as ranking factors. So if people are talking about your brand on Reddit or forums, that matters. [Host] That's a huge shift. And it directly makes old tactics obsolete. But I want to push back a bit — you're saying old tactics are dead, but some people argue that fundamentals like technical S.E.O. and content quality still matter. [Guest] They do, but they're no longer sufficient. Think of it this way: old S.E.O. was about optimizing for a machine to understand your page. Now you're optimizing for an A.I. that synthesizes across the web. The tactics that relied on volume over value — mass-produced A.I. articles, parasite links, keyword-stuffed listicles — don't work. They actively harm you. [Host] So what's the mechanism? HOW does Google now decide what ranks? [Guest] — well, actually, let me rephrase. Google's core updates don't target one thing. They change multiple ranking systems simultaneously. The technical mechanism involves evaluating pages across dimensions: intent, content quality, user experience, internal links, and now, crucially, external proof of trust. The old mindset was "How do I get my ranking back?" The new mindset should be "What does Google now reward for this query, and does my page deserve to be one of the best answers?" [Host] That's a subtle but profound shift. Let's talk about WHY this matters for businesses. Marcus, who's most affected? [Guest] Anyone who relied on manipulative tactics — exact-match anchor chains, keyword-stuffed content, manual link building — got hit hard. But even sites with strong fundamentals saw volatility. The March 2024 update caused significant volatility in search results, affecting countless websites. The real risk is brand-level. If your brand's information is not structured for A.I. search, the A.I. will still answer — but it will use someone else's version of you. That's the business danger. [Host] And that's where I think the viral video, for all its hype, gets something right. Old S.E.O. is obsolete as a primary growth strategy. But — and I'll admit I don't know if this holds six months from now — the fundamentals still have value. They're just not enough. [Guest] I actually disagree a bit. I think "obsolete" is too strong. The old tactics are still useful for foundational quality, but they don't drive rankings the way they used to. It's like perfecting your form in a race, but then they change the track. You still need good form, but the track changed. [Host] That's a better analogy. And that's where A.E.O. Engine comes in. Our entire focus is on making brands the answer in A.I. search — not just ranking, but being cited. The new S.E.O. is about optimizing for how A.I. systems extract and present your information. It's about controlling your canonical truth across Google A.I. Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. [Guest] Exactly. And that requires a different playbook. Instead of keyword density, you need topical authority. Instead of backlink counts, you need external proof of trust — community content, reviews, brand discussions. A.E.O. Engine helps brands build that systematically. [Host] Right. So let's wrap with perspective. The March 2026 update didn't kill S.E.O. It killed the old game. The new game is about being the source of truth that A.I. models trust. If you're still playing the old game, you're losing ground. [Guest] And the good news? It's still early. Most brands haven't adapted yet. The early adopters — the ones who build topical authority and off-site trust now — will dominate A.I. search. A.E.O. Engine's clients are already seeing 920% average growth in A.I.-driven traffic. [Host] That's the data point to remember. Stop guessing. Start measuring your A.I. citations. Head to A.E.O. Engine dot A.I. to learn how. Marcus, thanks for the reality check. [Guest] Thanks, Aria. Always a pleasure. [Host] And for everyone listening, if you want to stay ahead of A.I. search, we drop these episodes daily. Subscribe wherever you get podcasts. See you tomorrow.
