Latest / A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast / Rob Valentine - Top 10 Doctor Who
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to Hamster Top Ten. Another way to celebrate a
- 0:06fantastic Hamster contributor, Mr. Robert Valentine that you
- 0:11might know Rob from his work from Big Finish.
- 0:15He has written and script edited and I believe produced some
- 0:20fantastic work from Big Finish. But you probably have heard him
- 0:25on Hamster doing fantastic work talking about the gunfighters
- 0:31which has already gone out to Hamster extra members.
- 0:34But also he did a mammoth commentary on Shada, which was 3
- 0:39hours long and it rocketed into my top 10 Most listened to
- 0:45episodes and began with the great show in the Galaxy where I
- 0:51forgot to remember that you cannot share a Brit box viewing
- 1:02experience whilst you're doing a commentary.
- 1:05And Rob gamely did a commentary without seeing any of the
- 1:08visuals. So if you go back and listen to
- 1:10that, just go listen to how good he is and he couldn't see a
- 1:16single thing. So yeah, fantastic, fantastic
- 1:21fella. Charming, funny, smart.
- 1:25That's not just me saying words like he is just such a such an
- 1:30engaging man. And very handsome too, which me
- 1:34and my behalf both think. Incidentally, we will be
- 1:38interviewing him today for Finish Big, and we'll be talking
- 1:43to him about his work on Bambera series for Big Finish, The Young
- 1:49War Master, his work on the Purity sets with the Sick Doctor
- 1:54and Mel and Hebe and on other stories that he's done as well.
- 1:59So we're really, really excited about that.
- 2:01And he will be doing a commentary on The Abominable
- 2:06Snowman, where we'll be watching the fantastic new animation very
- 2:10soon. So you've got a lot more to come
- 2:12from Rob, but for now, let's take a look at Rob's.
- 2:17I said top ten stories or stories that he loves, and he
- 2:22sent me 10 zingers. He says that himself.
- 2:27They are. It's a slightly predictable
- 2:29list. So I think some of these are,
- 2:32some of them are. So let's get going.
- 2:35He's done them in order and there's only one new series
- 2:38story. The rest are all classics.
- 2:41So we're going to start with we are the masses of the Earth, the
- 2:47Dalek invasion of Earth, which is an intriguing choice.
- 2:52I mean obvious in some ways because it's it is such a big
- 2:57bold, probably the the first sort of movie of the week,
- 3:02Doctor Who. And you know, we have a huge
- 3:05shift for the show with Susan leaving.
- 3:08And in terms of production, everything is going up a notch
- 3:12in that, isn't it? You've got a fantastic location,
- 3:14work a ton of sets, you know terrelations, telling his story
- 3:19on a big old scale. Only prefer the movie version of
- 3:25this, but that's only because they had more money so they
- 3:28could make this look more spectacular.
- 3:30But there is a darkness and A and a sorry, great grit to the
- 3:37televised version of the Dalek Invasion of Earth.
- 3:39There's a nastiness to it. Remember this scene between Ian
- 3:43and Craddock? Sorry no.
- 3:47Craddock and his brother. Sorry that he is watching where
- 3:50you've got one character has been robotized and one character
- 3:54who hasn't brothers, and they basically murder each other.
- 3:59And there is that sort of level of faith.
- 4:01Listen to all of this Paul Dortmund, who tries his bombs on
- 4:04the Daleks and wounds up being killed.
- 4:08Yeah, it's a really, really dark story.
- 4:11But of course it's got lots of action.
- 4:13It's that sort of termination. Dan dare excitement to it.
- 4:17So we skip from one set piece to another.
- 4:21I need to talk to Rob Moore about this because I'm very
- 4:24intrigued to know why he rates that so high above a lot of
- 4:28other Dalek stories. Although spoiler, there are one
- 4:31two other Dalek stories in this list.
- 4:35Next up. OK, so we had this story in the
- 4:38previous top ten list and it is Da da da da da da da da da da
- 4:46da, the demons, Daughter of Light.
- 4:50Would you kindly extradite me from this sacrificial rapping?
- 4:56So clearly a lot of people love the demons, so maybe I'm wrong.
- 5:00Maybe, You know, I've said in many commentaries all the
- 5:02contributors to the demons or the actors, the director, the
- 5:06writers all saw this as their favorite story.
- 5:09And there's me going, yeah, but is it really all that good?
- 5:13I've asked for two top ten lists so far, and this has appeared on
- 5:16both of them. So maybe it's me who's wrong.
- 5:20So what did I not mention? In the first one we talked about
- 5:24Delgado and Miss Hawthorne and Benton.
- 5:28Should we talk about Joe Q as a button Joe?
- 5:31Oh no. She's patronized terribly in
- 5:32this, isn't she? Bless her heart a bit, where she
- 5:37leaves the bedroom and then all the Ivy, it just attacks her on
- 5:41the wall. That's a much more explicit in
- 5:43the book. You know, it's fabulous.
- 5:45Target pictures they put in the books and you've got The Ivy
- 5:49literally going around her neck. They couldn't quite realize that
- 5:52on TV. I will say I think episode four
- 5:56of the Demons is 1. Can you hear those seagulls?
- 6:00Wait, I'm doing a Toppling 10 list.
- 6:01Shut up. I live by the coast.
- 6:05The episode four of the demons is one of I said in the last
- 6:10list. The episode six of The Invasion
- 6:12was one of the best episodes ever as an individual episode, I
- 6:17think Episode 4. So that's the IT starts with
- 6:21it's all the scenes on the green, with the Doctor being
- 6:25tied up by the Morris dancers, the Master being a sinister
- 6:29swine in the church, Miss Hawthorn smacking the fellow
- 6:33over the head with a crystal ball.
- 6:35It's very funny. It's very dark.
- 6:38It's sort of leaning a little bit into that sort of Wicker Man
- 6:43sinister community feel. Yeah, I think it's really,
- 6:47really fantastic. So good choice, Rob, Good
- 6:50choice. Next up we have got the total
- 6:54annihilation of the fouls. It's Genesis of the Daleks,
- 7:00which is a great choice. What I love about Genesis of the
- 7:06Daleks and Sign I Fraser talked about this a lot with the
- 7:10commentary is how it stars as a very open stories and lots of
- 7:17open, expansive location work. And as the story progresses, it
- 7:24gets smaller and smaller and more claustrophobic until we're
- 7:27just down into in the bunker. And even the people that were
- 7:32working with Davros, most of them have been murdered and then
- 7:36even Davros was murdered. So basically, if we watch this
- 7:41planet, the people that are left, the survivors of this war,
- 7:46everybody is killed. It's an absolute fucking
- 7:49massacre. But you know, it starts off with
- 7:51the Khalid Dome being hit and then being knocked out.
- 7:55And as I say, we just, the story just shrinks and shrinks and
- 7:59shrinks until it's just the Daleks and Davros in a room and
- 8:03Davros is begging them, you know, not to kill him.
- 8:06Have pity that shot of his hand going for the bottom.
- 8:13It's one of the most dramatic moments in Doctor Who, maybe one
- 8:16of the most melodramatic moments in Doctor Who.
- 8:20It's just glorious, isn't it? It's not beyond fault.
- 8:23It's got enormous clams in it trying to eat Harry Sullivan.
- 8:27But in terms of making a dramatic statement in Doctor
- 8:31Who, and it's sort of giving it a moral core, it's rarely been
- 8:36bettered. Ah, Okay.
- 8:40Rob's next choice is City of Death, which is utterly glorious
- 8:52in every single way. We know Rob is a huge fan of
- 8:56Douglas Adams. And do you know why you always
- 9:01say this is a handshake between Douglas Adams and Graham
- 9:06Williams? Because I think you've got the
- 9:09wit and the high concept ideas and the gorgeous take, the
- 9:14Babble and the funny lines of Douglas Adams.
- 9:17But I think you've got the sharp plotting of Graham Williams in
- 9:20there as well. We know they sort of hammered
- 9:22this one out together. And I think I'm going to focus
- 9:26on Michael Hayes's gorgeous direction of this.
- 9:30He, you know, he films Paris like the most romantic travel
- 9:34log we've ever had. He knows the opportunity he's
- 9:38got there and he takes it and flies with it.
- 9:42But as well, like he's not afraid to to really pull back
- 9:49and show off the sets as well because there's a lot of detail
- 9:54in the design of this story, even like the prehistoric set.
- 9:58And don't forget, this is the same designer that designed
- 10:02prehistory in Time Flight as well.
- 10:05So it just goes to show we can all have an off day, the City of
- 10:09death. Like on every single level you
- 10:11can score. A Doctor Who's story is
- 10:13phenomenal. I'm not sure there's much I can
- 10:17add, so I wonder if it's going to turn up on a lot of lists.
- 10:21What in? Oh, there we go.
- 10:24There's somebody walking past the window for posterity.
- 10:27The next choice is Shada, which as I say, Rob did a commentary
- 10:32for on Hamster. And actually I prefer this to
- 10:37City of Death, and I know it's Flavia, but there is something
- 10:41so cozy about this story. I think the first two episodes
- 10:45are two of my favorite episodes. All the stuff around Cambridge,
- 10:49Chris Clare, Chronotis Skagra mincing around in his crazy
- 10:54tinfoil haute couture, the Bicycle chase, the Choir boys
- 11:01up. And I think they did such a
- 11:03phenomenal job with the animation for the DVD release.
- 11:09And Mark has beautiful score for it.
- 11:12Although you know what, at certain points I still hear
- 11:14Kevin Mccullough's music. Yeah, I think somewhere sort of
- 11:19around episodes four and five. This does run on the spot a lot,
- 11:24but it's still Douglas Adams, so it's still witty as hell, still
- 11:28full of ideas and all. The cast responds so well to it,
- 11:33it just has a charm to it that is difficult to ignore.
- 11:38Next up is Case of Androzani, which I imagine again will turn
- 11:43up on a lot of people's lists, about as different from City of
- 11:47Death and Sharder as you can get.
- 11:49So it's nice to see. Rob likes a diverse series of
- 11:52tones and fuck me, it's brutal, isn't it?
- 11:57Case of Androsani. I've got on record recently
- 12:00saying that. It's the sort of story I don't
- 12:05like to go back to a lot because it isn't really a good time, but
- 12:09it is a fantastic piece of television.
- 12:12It is a director taking hold of a very good script and saying
- 12:17I'm not just going to churn, I'm just going to point and shoot my
- 12:19cameras and churn out, you know, the usual competency.
- 12:26I'm going to aspire to be a bit more stylish and dynamic and
- 12:31exciting than that. And Graham Harper really put his
- 12:35name on the map. I think if he hadn't done
- 12:37Andrazani and Revelation of the Daleks, we may not have had him
- 12:40back for all those classics in the new series.
- 12:43So yeah, bravo on every account. Davis is not my favorite Doctor,
- 12:50but this is probably my favorite Doctor finale aside from the war
- 12:56games. Maybe it just again, absolutely
- 13:01amazing top drama and I really want to highlight one scene
- 13:04which truly terrified me when I first saw it when I was younger.
- 13:08And that is, and it's weird. It's a scene that Harper doesn't
- 13:12write. It's the bit where Chillac sees
- 13:16the mud burst coming towards him and screams his head off.
- 13:20Because adults in scenes of severe anxiety used to really
- 13:26scare me as a kid. They still scare me a bit now,
- 13:30but that bit where he screams and then the mud flies over the
- 13:34rock and we know that he's just been basically burnt to death.
- 13:40It's absolutely terrifying. Next up is probably like, in
- 13:48terms of action set pieces, the best classic Doctor Who story,
- 13:53and that is the Andrew Morgan directed Remembrance of the
- 13:58Daleks. What is it?
- 14:02She said. They're blobs, not pure in their
- 14:05blobbiness. It's the racism that's expressed
- 14:11in Genesis of the Daleks in an extremely melodramatic way, done
- 14:17a lot more thoughtfully in remembrance of the Daleks.
- 14:19And yeah, it's it's the no colored scene that they wanted
- 14:26to excise. That's such an important moment
- 14:29in that story. You know, Doctor Who's gone
- 14:32woke, But also the conversation between the Doctor and Ace about
- 14:38racial purity. Boiling that down, that
- 14:41scientific concept of the two Dalek races going against each
- 14:45other and racism and boiling it down for kids, it was Andrew
- 14:51Carmel was doing something very, very different from Eric Saywood
- 14:56and a lot more responsible. Sometimes it it they didn't get
- 15:00it right. Sometimes it was a little too in
- 15:04your face and a little too angsty.
- 15:08But at times they really, really he he managed to make Doctor Who
- 15:12very thoughtful. Yeah.
- 15:15It was such a responsible take. And just this is just explosive
- 15:20full of grey characters. Well, Rachel Jensen, you know
- 15:23I'm not having do you think I enjoy having oh, good grief.
- 15:29I can't remember the line. How embarrassing.
- 15:31While I'm recording, the painstaking life research I've
- 15:35devoted my life to has been superseded by a bunch of
- 15:38templated pepper pots. There you go.
- 15:41Got it. Space vagrant.
- 15:43That's it. Move on quick.
- 15:46Remember. So the Daleks?
- 15:47Massive thumbs up. Next up is my personal favorite,
- 15:53Sylvester Mccoy's story, which is Ghost Light, the cream of
- 15:57Scotland Yard. It is deliciously dark and
- 16:03funny. You know, Rob Sherman, he writes
- 16:08a lot of Big Finish stories that marry very dark comedy and very
- 16:15dark drama in a really, really uncomfortable way.
- 16:20And Ghost likes one of the very few Doctor Who stories on
- 16:23television that does exactly the same thing.
- 16:26I think it's a really impressive piece of work.
- 16:28It's literate. I mean, it's full of literary
- 16:31references. It's a brilliant historical
- 16:34because it's so well realized. It's got one of the most stellar
- 16:38costs you're ever going to see in Doctor Who's story.
- 16:41Look at Ian Hogg, Sylvia Sims, you know, Michael Cochran.
- 16:47It is such a shame that just as the plug was pulled, Doctor Who
- 16:54was right back at the top of his game, which it hadn't been this
- 16:59consistently since probably in the mid 70s.
- 17:03So yeah, it is a crying crying shame that this is where it all
- 17:07ended, but I'm glad it went out with a sort of finals story to
- 17:13be recorded on such a high. It's a it's an amazing piece of
- 17:17work and I'm about to record a commentary on it soon, so I am
- 17:21looking forward to that. Second to last is Curse of
- 17:25Fenrick, which is a massively popular story.
- 17:28A lot of people like this and again I think it's got one of
- 17:33those stories where you've got a single episode that you can pull
- 17:36out and say that is one of the best single episodes of Doctor
- 17:39Who Knows episode 4 where the pace is relentless, the death
- 17:44count is extraordinary. And I think Nick Mallett's
- 17:48direction you think he did Mysterious Planet, which is kind
- 17:53of lie and very amiably directed, but I wouldn't say
- 17:59grippingly directed Paradise Towers where the direction is
- 18:03very much fighting with the tone of the script And finally you
- 18:07got it bang on with cursor Fenrig.
- 18:10And in that last episode honestly the when you watch the
- 18:13extended edition, the editing and the direction is full of
- 18:19time, very accomplished. It's doing complex things with
- 18:24the Doctor and Ace's relationship.
- 18:26It's allowing Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred to it pushes
- 18:31them probably beyond their acting limit, but I would rather
- 18:36they were doing that than than going in the other direction.
- 18:40It's a dark, scary, characterful story with tons to say.
- 18:46It's a hugely impressive piece of work.
- 18:50And finally we have the Empty Child and the Doctor.
- 18:54Darls is so our only entry in the new series Are You My Mommy?
- 19:01And probably my third favorite Stephen Moffett story.
- 19:07I won't tell you what one or two I'll say that for another time,
- 19:09but this is I feel Stephen Moffett under Rusty Davis.
- 19:15Regardless as to whether Russell says he changed the scripts or
- 19:19not, I think Moffett is writing for Russell's vision and not his
- 19:24own vision. And that means the work is very,
- 19:27very different from what he was doing later on.
- 19:30This slows down. It has time for its characters.
- 19:35It has huge heart to it, huge heart in Nancy's character, but
- 19:42just in general as well. It has incredible wit between
- 19:47the Doctor, Jack and Rose. Those sequences are rarely
- 19:51better. The production value on this
- 19:54thing is night shoes, for goodness sakes, Some of the
- 19:58scariest horror scenes you're going to see in Doctor Who.
- 20:02I mean it. You can see why we got halfway
- 20:06through this season this year, and suddenly this Doctor Who was
- 20:10on everybody's lips. Everybody was watching it,
- 20:12everybody was talking about it and I don't think.
- 20:17The Empty charm, the Doctor offices had nothing to do with
- 20:19that. I think it's a big part of that.
- 20:22Yeah. It's the most classic Who season
- 20:28one or Series 1 adventure. I think it might be the most
- 20:33classic Who knew series as well, but it's certainly the new
- 20:37series as well. I mean, it's got John Barrowman
- 20:39straddling a bomb and it's some very, very impressive camera
- 20:47work and special effects. So yeah, just all round,
- 20:51absolute classic. That is Robert Valentine's top
- 20:56ten or most loved or very loved Doctor Who stories.
- 21:03It's a hell of a list. Rob, thank you very much for
- 21:08continuing to support and to deliver such fantastic
- 21:12commentaries on Hamster. And thank you for sharing your
- 21:15list as well. What an amazing list of stories.
- 21:18You're a top bloke. Thank you.
