- 0:06Welcome to the Duckfellas Podcast, your weekly dose of waterfowl wisdom,
- 0:12blind banter, and hunting stories that might just be mostly true,
- 0:17hosted by Tyler, Cade, and used to be Austin.
- 0:22Two fellas and one that used to be chasing feathers at good times.
- 0:27Do us a favor and hit that like button or subscribe wherever you're listening in at.
- 0:37Hot start roasting austin right off the rip i love
- 0:40it man we got to while he's since he's
- 0:42skipping out on us like that unreal absolutely
- 0:46unreal you know some people just aren't cut out for it but maybe one day he'll
- 0:53make an appearance again it's turning back into a deer hunter we lost him definitely
- 0:58lost him i mean he's after that podcast we did thursday he's he's leaving in the chat. He's gone.
- 1:08Can't even defend himself.
- 1:13So, how was your guys' weekend of hunting?
- 1:18It wasn't terrible. Wednesday, got off work early enough to go out to the field.
- 1:24Shot a pretty easy limit of geese. No bands, surprisingly.
- 1:29I've seen that. We never did discuss that hunt that you guys went on.
- 1:32Wednesday was a banger Thursday sucked
- 1:36of course as soon as Austin leaves we shoot two bands so he's never invited
- 1:41again he was pretty tore up about that he's like I knew it was gonna happen
- 1:45he was pissed we only shot I think four but two bands nonetheless that's pretty
- 1:51good odds yeah yeah Friday I went to work,
- 1:56Saturday we shot nine,
- 1:59and one we shoot
- 2:02one or two we shot two bands on saturday yep
- 2:06yeah and then uh yeah
- 2:09sunday we shot six and got the hell out of there not a bad not a bad weekend
- 2:16you guys killed a few ducks on was it thursday or thursday we shot one two two
- 2:24thursday and then we shot two on saturday we didn't shoot Denny on Sunday.
- 2:33Not good. Saw, I couldn't even tell you how many ducks we saw.
- 2:36It was stupid, but they landed 500 yards down the river from us.
- 2:41That is so unfortunate when they do that.
- 2:44It's cool to watch, but it is so fucking aggravating.
- 2:48Yeah, especially when that's what you're really wanting to kill because it's
- 2:51kind of the last weekend for them, and then they just go and land a bend downriver.
- 2:57Yeah, and then, of course, we'll go shoot geese down there, and we won't be
- 3:02able to get away from the ducks.
- 3:03Yeah, no. Whenever it opens back up on the 20th, it'll probably be nonstop ducks
- 3:09in our face the whole time. Yep.
- 3:11Little bastards. Love it. Well, I mean, it still sounds a lot better than being
- 3:17stuck at work like I was, doing nothing half the time.
- 3:21And then Sunday night, when we were supposed to be recording this episode,
- 3:26I'm stuck out there till midnight Taking cable on and off of a crane That was terrible,
- 3:33Yeah, sitting on a sandbar on the river With my dog and a couple dudes Sounds
- 3:39way better than that Yeah,
- 3:41yeah I'm sure Hank much more enjoyed his days Than Ellie enjoyed her days at
- 3:46work Oh, absolutely Hank was pumped all weekend long,
- 3:51He even posed nice for the picture He did.
- 3:54He did it on Saturday too. Little bastard.
- 3:57So funny. I was cracking up whenever you posted that picture Sunday.
- 4:01He's always done that too. I've never been good about posting them,
- 4:05but they're freaking hilarious. He's done it since the day I got him.
- 4:09He goes out and fetches birds and he's, when I go to take a picture of him with
- 4:12the birds, he just sits in front of it like, yeah, bitch, you were in my mouth. He's just proud.
- 4:17I did that. You didn't do anything. I'll see you next time.
- 4:23Uh, well, I mean, like I said, at least you guys got on a few ducks before it
- 4:29ended. Could have been worse.
- 4:31Yeah, should have been a lot better, but definitely could have been worse.
- 4:34Yeah, it happens like that, though.
- 4:37Even to the best of the people out there, it happens. Yep.
- 4:44But this week We're going to talk about Private versus public hunting And then
- 4:50different hunting strategies For whether it's private and public Or field or
- 4:55water Should be Interesting,
- 4:59A lot of different takes on private hunting Than compared to public hunting
- 5:04People have I know a lot of guys that won't even touch public ground Because
- 5:08they're too high class for it,
- 5:11Not us I don't have enough land to hunt private ground all year we'd just be
- 5:15sitting there staring at seagulls flying by chasing a combine but chasing a
- 5:20tractor around a field all day,
- 5:23he'll go snacks,
- 5:26Oh, what's up, my friends? I've seen you on the lake a few times.
- 5:31So, I mean, we'll jump into private ground first, kind of just the challenge of it.
- 5:36I mean, like, for me, it's always fun going and talking to landowners and trying to get permission.
- 5:43Because sometimes you meet a landowner that just, it's like instantly they're
- 5:47your best friend. Like they've known you their whole life.
- 5:49But then there's the ones that, I mean, will run you off their property half the time too.
- 5:54So, like, The challenges of securing private ground in our area,
- 5:59especially because it's so heavily hunted and people have, I mean,
- 6:02known people for centuries, I've noticed it's really 50-50 on any ground,
- 6:10but it seems to be getting more and more difficult as more people get into the sport.
- 6:16That and i feel like another big part of that like we're always really good
- 6:21about it we don't drive in wet fields we don't tear anything up we pick up after
- 6:25ourselves as good as we can,
- 6:26but some of these people dude you go look at a field and you're like why would
- 6:31you even try to get in there there's freaking three foot ruts you can tell they
- 6:34got the truck stuck as soon as they pulled in the field that does not leave
- 6:37a good taste in a farmer's mouth no no that will that That all ruins it for
- 6:44everybody, for certain landowners.
- 6:46Sometimes they just say, no, I'm done with that. I ain't dealing with it no more.
- 6:51And that's a, I mean, that, I will say that has been the biggest killer for
- 6:56North Dakota since I've been hunting up there for 10, 12 years now or whatever it's been.
- 7:03I mean, from what it was 12, 13 years ago when I first went up there and hunted
- 7:06to what it is now is night and day.
- 7:09And that's, I mean, you're seeing that everywhere around the country,
- 7:12but obviously there's a lot more pressure than here.
- 7:16Yeah. And we've had like really odd winters around here too lately.
- 7:20I feel like it never really, I mean, this year it's supposed to get cold and
- 7:24it's going to warm back up.
- 7:26Typical Iowa bullshit. But we've had really warm winters with like rain, not even snow.
- 7:33So I feel like that's a little bit different from like a lot of places are,
- 7:37the fields are frozen enough that you can drive in them when they're wet.
- 7:41But we haven't had that here.
- 7:43No, last year was difficult too because either, like you said,
- 7:48it was warm and rainy and then you
- 7:51couldn't pattern the geese because it'd be warm and rainy for like two days and
- 7:54then maybe a day or two of cold and then they'd be on a
- 7:56different pattern and they'd revert back right away yeah so
- 8:00that that made it challenging last year hopefully this year we
- 8:03don't have that as bad but hopefully it
- 8:05warms up enough to make the water soft again and
- 8:08not hard and then of course last year we tried to
- 8:12pull the uno reverse card we were like oh it's going to warm back up they're
- 8:14going to go back to this field and then they picked a field like three fields
- 8:17over we were like shit yeah you'll have that on the big jobs i love hunting
- 8:23geese it's so much fun no it's not i mean it is but it's not oh there's such a pain in the ass,
- 8:31that's why sometimes i don't even chase the geese i just go south yep keep chasing ducks,
- 8:36at least i know what i'm getting with those geese just change it up on on the
- 8:39daily they do even with no weather change same wind same temperature they're
- 8:44just like nah we'll go this way today.
- 8:47I think I've seen their truck go by earlier. They're probably going to be over
- 8:50there. Let's go over here.
- 8:53But the, I mean, so the benefits of having private ground access for me is just
- 9:00if you're getting burnt out hunting the public ground,
- 9:05whether it's CRP or water, whatever it is, a marsh,
- 9:09it's so nice to be able to go to that private ground that you built a relationship with that landowner.
- 9:14And just, even if you don't kill a bunch or you don't kill anything,
- 9:17it's nice to get away and go out and chill and not have 20 or 30 parties or whatever around you.
- 9:25Yeah, it's always nice to get away and have that quiet day. It's just like,
- 9:29yeah, we're out here by ourselves. This is nice.
- 9:32Yeah, especially like on the weekends when you don't got, I mean,
- 9:35you're going to, you don't have no boats running around all day,
- 9:38every day, scouting or just people coming out hunting in the afternoon or people
- 9:43leaving early. You know, it's part of it. It's, it's hunting. Yep.
- 9:48Uh, the biggest thing for private ground for me has always been a long-term
- 9:53relationship with landowner.
- 9:54Once you start that relationship with them, like the first year you're hunting
- 9:58with them, try to like, I always try to try to go back out and talk to him throughout
- 10:03the year, but I'm so busy most of the time. I don't get the chance to do that.
- 10:08I get a few of them I can do it with, but not a lot. I think the coolest thing
- 10:12is, like, I've noticed it around here, like, since moving down here and hunting
- 10:16some fields around here.
- 10:17Almost every field that I have, if we're out hunting, the farmer will stop by.
- 10:22Yeah. We'll be pulling out, and he'll be sitting there waiting for us. How'd you guys do?
- 10:26It's awesome. I've got one landowner that I hunt on, but he lets,
- 10:30you know, pretty much anybody hunt his property.
- 10:33But every time I'm out there, if he drives by, and I'm at the truck by the road,
- 10:37he's definitely going to stop and say, well, did you kill all of them stupid geese?
- 10:42No, didn't kill all of them. Because if I did, the game ward would really be mad at me.
- 10:46But we will be back tomorrow. Yeah. We'll return.
- 10:50I mean, yeah, like I started with, don't be afraid to offer,
- 10:56like, going in the summertime if you got nothing going on and you're looking
- 11:00for something to do or you want to make sure you're going to have that same
- 11:03field or that same access the next year.
- 11:05Don't be afraid to go to his house or his farm and see if he needs help baling
- 11:10hay or working on something or however you can help out, whether it's just driving
- 11:14his pickup from field to field so he has his pickup there.
- 11:17Yep, that's huge. I mean, those guys put in a lot of hours in the spring and
- 11:21the fall between planting and harvesting.
- 11:23So anything that you can do to help out is huge for those guys.
- 11:27Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'm seeing them whenever they're, you got to be careful
- 11:31on the times you approach them. If they just look busy, you're probably just
- 11:35better off to keep on driving at certain times.
- 11:39I've been in that situation before where I was going to pull up and talk to
- 11:43one of my landowners, and I'm like, you know, I think I'm just going to go ahead
- 11:47and keep going this time because he's looking like he's ready to throw shit.
- 11:52I think I will take a rain check on this one.
- 11:57I mean, have you ever I don't know what all of you've done to kind of help secure
- 12:03permission for property or land from,
- 12:06landowners. It doesn't, it doesn't cost like to people an arm and a leg to do,
- 12:10you know, something that's easy that everyday guy can go and do.
- 12:13I like to get just like even a, like a $50 Casey's gift card or I mean,
- 12:18any little gift card like that.
- 12:21Obviously, like, I don't lease any fields, but I feel like that goes a long
- 12:25way, and I've never had a problem getting permission again from anybody that I've done that with.
- 12:30I mean, that guy, if he goes to Casey's every day, you're buying that guy's
- 12:34coffee every morning for a week or two, and he's happy as hell about it.
- 12:38They do love, most farmers do love their coffee in the morning.
- 12:42And especially Casey's coffee.
- 12:45Hopefully soon Quickstar. I know,
- 12:47I'm pumped for that. I wish it was going to be open when I came home.
- 12:52It looks like it's close it's gotta be
- 12:55i mean i think soft openings in less than
- 12:57a month what i've seen so that's i'm
- 13:00pumped for that but i mean yeah like i always try to offer them if like uh whenever
- 13:08i process all the ducks and geese from the year i always try to go back and
- 13:12offer them up a package of broads or two or three or some hot sticks or if they
- 13:17want any of it or even that day,
- 13:19you know, I always ask him, but whenever they give me permission or I tell him
- 13:21I'm going to be out there,
- 13:23maybe you want any of the birds, let me know. I'll give you whatever you want.
- 13:26Yeah. I've got one guy, I've got one guy every time we hunt geese,
- 13:30he's like, clean me up a bird and just bring me the breast. And I'm like,
- 13:34all right, we can do that.
- 13:36Yeah. Some of them farmers love them. Some of them will not even look at them.
- 13:40And no matter what they are. I think this guy cuts it up and he makes his own
- 13:43jerky out of it. And he just loves to, loves to do it.
- 13:47I've had to trick a few and tell them that the hot sticks are deer and not duck.
- 13:51And then they'll try and I'm like, oh, that's pretty good. I was like,
- 13:53well, good, because that was duck.
- 13:55Oh, what?
- 13:58Now it's nasty. Yeah. Throw that away. That's almost as bad as seagull.
- 14:06Jesus. Not saying they shot them. They may have just got caught up in the tractor.
- 14:12I suppose. I mean that's I've seen some dead seagulls in farm fields from getting
- 14:17caught up in implements before oh yeah that'd be a big puff of feathers,
- 14:23That would be so much fun, though, honestly.
- 14:27Can't kill them, but nothing says that you can't keep them from flying into
- 14:32them or walking into it. That is fair.
- 14:37No, we don't do anything illegal, Mr. Officer.
- 14:42I mean, the biggest thing with private ground, as always, whenever you're hunting
- 14:48someone else's land, remember, it's someone else's land.
- 14:51It's not yours, so treat it with as much respect as you would want someone to
- 14:56come in and treat your house. Take your trash with you.
- 15:00Don't destroy his field. If it's muddy, don't be lazy. Walk your stuff in there
- 15:04if you want to hunt it, or don't hunt it. Yeah, it's really not difficult.
- 15:09No. It's the easiest thing. I mean, it's a lot of work, don't get me wrong,
- 15:13but if you want to hunt it bad enough, there you go. That's your only option.
- 15:17Yeah. I mean, we all make mistakes. If I've made a mistake once or twice,
- 15:23I can't remember, I think I know for sure once that I went in a field and when
- 15:27it was too muddy, I routed it up, but I went straight to the guy's house and
- 15:32told him like, look, I'm sorry. I routed it up.
- 15:35I can do whatever you want me to do to fix it or help you or whatever to try
- 15:39and make sure that I could hunt
- 15:41it again and it didn't ruin it for me or everybody else that hunted it.
- 15:46I've had to do that one time also, and that was walking up to that guy's door.
- 15:50I'm like, oh, my God, he's going to chew my ass.
- 15:53It's like being a kid again and just know your parents are going to rip your
- 15:56ass a new one. Yep. No, I'm going to get a spanking.
- 16:01The thing is, though, if you go tell that guy that you messed his field up,
- 16:04he's going to be like, thanks for telling me. I'll take care of it. Don't worry about it.
- 16:07Yeah. Nine times out of ten, you might get that one guy that's like,
- 16:11yeah, don't ever come back here again.
- 16:14Lose my number. Yeah. But, yeah, like you said, you got a much better chance
- 16:19of being able to hunt it again if you just own up to it right away.
- 16:23If you do make, I mean, nobody's perfect. Mistakes happen. Yeah.
- 16:26I mean, shit, the time that I did it, it rained like five days prior.
- 16:31And as soon as we got like halfway into that field, I was like, shit.
- 16:36That was kind of how mine was. So it was cold and some snow melted the day before,
- 16:43but then it refroze that night, but it did not.
- 16:46Freeze hard enough. Like, I drove like the first hundred yards into the field.
- 16:51I was like, oh yeah, we're doing good. I didn't even leave in a dent.
- 16:54Got in the middle of that field. We left a huge dent. I had to,
- 16:58I actually had to drop the trailer and abandon the trailer.
- 17:01I had to leave it there. Come back and get it when it freezes.
- 17:04Yeah, I went back at like one o'clock in the morning the next day.
- 17:07I didn't even hunt. I was like, I hate it here.
- 17:09We're going home. Yeah, but, no, I owned up to it and I still hunt as ground today.
- 17:17Yeah. Another big thing with fields, especially, obviously, you see them all
- 17:23the time when you're driving around, like driving through the field,
- 17:25going to usually leave because you usually get there in the dark.
- 17:28But if you see a fricking rock, pick that sumbitch up.
- 17:33You tell that farmer like, hey, dude, I found like 10 rocks just driving through
- 17:37here. We grabbed them for you. So you don't have to worry about it.
- 17:39That dude's pumped because he's not replacing everything on his tiller.
- 17:44Yeah I don't gotta pick him up Cause my dog does that for me That is true That's
- 17:52why I keep her around And feed her kibble Just everybody get Nelly.
- 17:59It's way easier. She's currently just sprawled out like a whole sack of potatoes right now sleeping.
- 18:06Well, we'll just keep on trucking here. We'll move right into the public ground hunting.
- 18:11Here we go. That's the best. I mean, it's so much fun, honestly.
- 18:16So what are your thoughts on the day in and out challenges that come up while hunting public ground?
- 18:24The biggest one is obviously, I feel like everybody that hunts public deals
- 18:27with this, but it doesn't seem to matter how early you get there.
- 18:31You get your spot half hour before shooting time. Here comes a boat.
- 18:35You flash your light at him. He's floating right up into your hole.
- 18:37You flash your light at him.
- 18:38You don't give a shit. He goes up and sets 200 yards right behind you. I love that.
- 18:43That is the biggest problem with public waterfowl hunting.
- 18:48And all that is, is just respect. I mean, it comes down to respect.
- 18:53Nobody has that nowadays. Well, not nobody, but it's harder to find nowadays than it used to be.
- 18:58There was this one guy on opener on the lake.
- 19:02I wish I would have met him at the boat ramp when we went back.
- 19:04Cause this dude, dude, he did it right.
- 19:06I'm not even shit talking this guy for once. I'm not shit talking somebody.
- 19:09Oh, wow. I thought we were going a whole different route with this.
- 19:11No, this guy, he came up to our hole.
- 19:14We flashed him. I mean, this is legitimately a half an hour before shooting time.
- 19:18There's freaking people everywhere. The place is packed.
- 19:22He went to every single hole.
- 19:25Found everybody where they were at and he ended
- 19:28up going clear up the river and he went and found his
- 19:31own little spot he shot his ducks and he left hats off
- 19:34to the guy but i mean like we had we had a group that was probably i don't know
- 19:40800 yards behind us there was a really good spot that he could have gone right
- 19:44in between us he just kept right on going went and found a spot clear away from
- 19:48everybody and just had himself a little morning nothing wrong with that that never happens though.
- 19:54No, no, it's kind of a once in a, I wouldn't even say once a year thing,
- 19:59maybe once a year, five years type thing.
- 20:01It seems like every time I hunt public ground, well, I pretty much always hunt public ground.
- 20:05So pretty much every day that I hunt, people try to hunt as close as they possibly can.
- 20:10Oh, it's insane. It's like they have air tags on your boat. They're like,
- 20:13oh, he's hunting over here. Let's go mess with it.
- 20:14Well, they're not Apple ones because I have an iPhone and it does not tell me they're there.
- 20:19They just put some little Garmin GPS tracker on you then it's gotta be something
- 20:24either that or ellie sends out text one of the two i do they're like hey come
- 20:29bother this asshole over here so he doesn't shoot me they're here again.
- 20:36No i mean that's that's the honestly one of the biggest challenges but there's
- 20:42a lot of things that goes into it i mean even even if guys are respectful in
- 20:46all reality three or four hundred yards.
- 20:48I mean, heck, we had a buddy of ours set up, and he was like 350 yards,
- 20:52which is far enough away. I mean...
- 20:56But we could hear him talking like he was right next to us. I mean,
- 20:59we had full-on conversations with him.
- 21:00Yeah, yeah, we were, and not even really yelling, just like kind of talking
- 21:04back and forth between the boats.
- 21:06Yeah, I mean, like I said, he was far enough away.
- 21:09Like for me, as long as you're over 200 yards, it's a safe distance.
- 21:13But if there's not that many people out, we don't need to be that close, boys.
- 21:18Like we can spread out a little bit. Yeah, I think there was five boats out
- 21:21that day. Yeah, no, there wasn't many.
- 21:24But it happens, you know, it's part of it. Like I said, at least 200 on a really busy day.
- 21:30If you're getting, because at
- 21:32that range, at least you're, if you get peppered, it's not going to hurt.
- 21:36It's going to be, you're going to hear it hitting stuff. It's not going to sting
- 21:39it. It's going to be a rain.
- 21:41But anything closer than 200, you're just being a jackass. Go home. Yeah.
- 21:48That's, that's insane. And then you just, when you're hunting that close to,
- 21:51whenever people are that close together and you're calling it the same ducks.
- 21:56All the time. Like the ducks don't even have like a little sound gap between,
- 21:59parties of people and they can hear all these different parties.
- 22:02They're never, they're, they're probably not coming down.
- 22:04Nope. They're just going to keep going and say, yeah, let's get away from here.
- 22:09Makes it, makes everybody's hunt less enjoyable and makes it harder to kill
- 22:12birds. Yeah. We had a kind of odd one this weekend on Saturday.
- 22:16The spot we hunt on the river, there's guys that have permission on the field right above it.
- 22:21Well, we were getting ready to go down the boat ramp and go hunt our sandbar.
- 22:25And this guy comes up and he's like, Hey, we hunted the field yesterday.
- 22:29We're going to hunt it again.
- 22:30And I'm like, all right, well, where are you setting up? And he's like,
- 22:32we're going to set up right here. Showed me right on his phone.
- 22:35It was maybe a hundred yards behind us, but obviously like we were hunting water.
- 22:40They were hunting the field. I'm like, all right, dude, like they hunted it
- 22:42the day before he's got permission on the field, whatever.
- 22:46I shit you not, dude. He told me, he's like, these geese don't like to be called at.
- 22:52He was wrong. We had to absolutely hammer him.
- 22:56And he had to have been so pissed because the group that we shot the two bands
- 23:01out of, one of them landed up on the bank right on the edge of the field.
- 23:05So we obviously had to go get it. And the guy that went and got it was like,
- 23:09hey, it's banded. And I'm like, oh, that guy's got to be so fucking mad.
- 23:14Yeah, that would be a gut punch. But that was one of
- 23:17those instances that it worked out because like if the geese slid
- 23:20off into the field we would quit calling when we were working the birds they
- 23:24weren't calling at all and everything worked out fine that's a big thing no
- 23:30like if even if you have people set up close to you as long as each party's
- 23:34respective of the other it can work and it can work just fine,
- 23:38but once again the respect thing is harder to find than it used to be yeah still people out there,
- 23:47I try to be respectful when people are being respectful back,
- 23:50but you have times where it's just an all-out battle.
- 23:54It's fun. Those days are a blast. Oh, yeah.
- 23:57I mean, that kind of leads into, like, the perfect amount of pressure,
- 24:00like, the perfect amount of hunting pressure in an area or when it's too much.
- 24:04I mean, for me, for the area we hunt, I honestly like to see about seven or
- 24:09eight boats at the boat ramp every day.
- 24:11If there's less than that I mean It gets It gets hard Because the birds can
- 24:17They got too many areas They can go to and just chill They'll just go sit down
- 24:20And hang out Yep And it usually happens like that Yeah.
- 24:26Yeah, it's terrible. I hate it. Yeah, it's tough to put a number on it because
- 24:31like you could have, if you have eight boats that are spread out the right way,
- 24:36like usually during the weekdays, I mean, if you have eight boats,
- 24:39the guys that are there on the weekdays kind of know,
- 24:42yeah, we'll spread out and everybody's got a fair shot.
- 24:46If you have eight boats on a weekend, like say it's an ice up weekend or something,
- 24:50and there's only eight boats there, which is a miracle in itself.
- 24:56But if you have like if you get too stacked up on each other it still gives
- 25:00them the space to just go hang out and not get shot at yeah for sure it makes them,
- 25:08fly more longer into the day I think as long as like when everybody's spread
- 25:12out like that because they're not just going to try in the morning to come up
- 25:15into the marsh and chill they're going to keep trying unless it's you know 30
- 25:22like Friar let's say 30 boats then it's it's too much they'll hit that edge of the area,
- 25:28and every Tom Dick and Swingin' Harry's calling at them or shooting at them
- 25:33at 80 yards and they're gonna say eh we'll go back out here and hang out until
- 25:36night we'll come back in at night yep we'll let you blow us out with the boats
- 25:40in the morning and we won't see you again yep,
- 25:43it's like they count how many boats come out in the morning and then they go
- 25:46yep we gotta stay out here all day yep,
- 25:49we'll try again tomorrow stingy bastards,
- 25:53I don't think they could count.
- 25:54Maybe think they have like, they don't have that many, they have enough feathers
- 25:56though. They could probably count the boats on their wings. Oh, for sure.
- 26:00For sure. And I wonder if they can count higher than Austin can. Oh, for sure.
- 26:08That's, I mean, it's not saying a whole lot.
- 26:13And then I guess the importance of knowing like the area you're hunting for
- 26:19comes down to so many different weather situations or just.
- 26:25Being pressure situations. I mean, it could be, there could be a spot you hunt
- 26:29on certain weather days.
- 26:30Like it's a hard, it's a hard Northwest wind and you go to this hole every time and you kill your ducks.
- 26:36But if there's 30 boats there, they might not make it up to that spot.
- 26:39They might get turned around right away. So you got to go farther out or go
- 26:44somewhere else to get to where the birds are going to make it to you.
- 26:47Yeah. I've had that happen to a lot.
- 26:50And that was even like that day we got all that snow that the spot that we went
- 26:54was overpressured there's a boat in there every single day but we know that's
- 26:58an area they frequent they know how to get there and they couldn't see jack shit so we were like yep,
- 27:05that's where we're going and we shot them pretty good yeah yeah except for the
- 27:10fact that slushed up on us a little too sooner a little too soon yeah that was
- 27:15not ideal that was some of the there was like an hour and a half there that
- 27:21was some of the heaviest snow i've hunted in in a long time.
- 27:24Yeah, that was nuts. And then it would let up and then it would just start snowing sideways again.
- 27:29Yeah, it was... What did my dad say when we talked to him on the phone at one point?
- 27:33It's snowing gerbils or something like that? Something like that, yeah.
- 27:37I was like, what did you just say? He's like, yeah, it's snowing gerbils out
- 27:40here. Hamsters. Maybe it was hamsters. I don't know.
- 27:43I've never heard that before, but okay, that's a good one. It was a new one for sure.
- 27:49But like, on those scenarios, like I see you have here...
- 27:53On high wind days from a certain direction, like for our area,
- 27:56we'll blow all your water out too.
- 27:58It's like you may set up in two foot of water or a foot and a half of water,
- 28:03and then two hours into the hunt, you're in two inches of water.
- 28:08I've legit seen two feet of water get blown out of the area before in less than an hour.
- 28:15Yeah, it doesn't take near as long as you would think and it will leave you high and dry.
- 28:22Better hope you brought plenty of Christmas tree cakes because you're going
- 28:25to be there for a while. Until the wind lets up.
- 28:28Yeah. And then another three hours past that.
- 28:32I still got like two boxes of Christmas tree cakes in the boat in the cooler.
- 28:36Oh, we got to take the boat somewhere then.
- 28:40Oh, it's meant to be. You can't take them out of the boat. They live there.
- 28:46I mean, they're going to have to come out of the boat if they don't get eaten before winter's over.
- 28:50But I'm saying we got to take the boat so we can eat the Christmas trees. They can't go to waste.
- 28:55No, I mean, that's true. I just really hope it thaws out here in the next week and a half.
- 29:00It looks like we're going to get a warm-up here right before...
- 29:05Season opens back up. Yeah, I see a lot of sunshine on those warm days too.
- 29:10Hopefully it's sunshine and a hard south wind. That would be ideal.
- 29:16Those are my favorite days to hunt, the reverse migration. Which,
- 29:20it wouldn't be a reverse migration for honkers, but we'd get to see some cool shit for ducks.
- 29:24Yeah. That's usually when I get my clips of ducks, and I know you always take
- 29:29your photos of ducks after season.
- 29:30Yeah, I usually do it in the springtime. I haven't really messed with it much
- 29:34during season until this year, which the new lens helps that. Yeah.
- 29:41I enjoy taking videos of ducks, but I don't have the time for it.
- 29:47I'm too busy trying to make sure that, or trying to help make sure that we get
- 29:51the chance to kill as many ducks as we can.
- 29:53Whether it's our limit or it's the only two we get to kill that day,
- 29:57I don't want to be stuck with my phone in my hand going, oh,
- 29:59I wish I'd have got a call at those or I wish I wish I could have got shot at that group. Yeah.
- 30:05You never know when it's going to be the last group of the day.
- 30:08Yeah. That's the funny thing. Like when I take my camera, the first group I always shoot into.
- 30:12And then after that, if it's pretty immediate after we shoot that first group,
- 30:16I'm like, yeah, I'll grab the camera. You know, we got, got some time today.
- 30:20But if it's a while, I'm like, yeah, I'll just leave the camera sitting down there.
- 30:24We got to shoot our shit and get out of here. Right.
- 30:28Well, why did you check off the next section here? We already talked about it pretty much.
- 30:32No, we got to really talk about it. We just dabbled into it. Let it rip.
- 30:37I'm going to let you start the topic out. I got to grab another latte before
- 30:41I get into this part. All right, we'll unblock it then.
- 30:46There you go. Now we can get into the topic. All right, this is a great question for you.
- 30:51Oh, he's going to grab a latte. When he comes back, I'll ask him.
- 30:56We're going to start talking about the 200-yard away setup and how we take that.
- 31:04Saying how he does it because I have been there when you have done the same thing.
- 31:10I could still hear you even though I took my headphones off.
- 31:14Yeah, we both do it. Yeah. Yeah. Trying to push it all on me.
- 31:18Come on now. I got the volume so loud on these things. I'm deaf.
- 31:21I could still hear them across the room. Huh?
- 31:26All right. I'm gonna let you rip it then. How often do you let off birds when
- 31:31they're sliding off to another group well that depends if they're if they're
- 31:36playing nice that day now if somebody sets up within 100 yards of me or 150 yards of me,
- 31:44they're probably not going to shoot a duck that day because
- 31:49i have i bring a lot of shells with me
- 31:52every day and i have a lot of free time and i
- 31:55get a hunt 90 of the duck season so i
- 31:59will make sure they don't do it again and it works most of
- 32:02the time that party does not do that again to anybody
- 32:05else it does that is the worst
- 32:09thing like you and i are both really good
- 32:11about if there's a group that's a reasonable distance away if the birds work
- 32:16us and then they kind of slide off their direction we're like all right we're
- 32:19we're done we'll let them work them for a while and then if they come back we'll
- 32:22we'll call them again and do our thing but if they're within i would even push it out to 200 yards.
- 32:29If they're within that, Tyler and I are both pissed. Yeah.
- 32:34But I mean, if they're at the 200 yard mark and they're being respectful,
- 32:39like they're calling at the birds when they should be calling at them,
- 32:43you know, whenever they think they're working them.
- 32:45And then they say the birds just kind of lose interest in them and they move
- 32:48on to that group that's next in line from them.
- 32:50As long as, like if they're being respectful and they kind of quit calling,
- 32:53if they're starting to work the other group instead of them and the other group
- 32:57was being Fair and letting them work the group birds first I don't have a problem with it.
- 33:04Say we're working a group of birds, and we can hear freaking Dingleberry off
- 33:08to the left just letting it rip like he's in Arkansas at the World Championship
- 33:13Duck Calling Contest. Just going to town.
- 33:16Yeah, we're going to have a fun day.
- 33:19And it's nine times out of ten, it's the second part of that.
- 33:23Nobody seems to have any respect anymore.
- 33:26Like I said earlier, it doesn't matter how early you have the hole.
- 33:30They'll come right in there and set up right on top of you and they'll call
- 33:34it every single bird that's working your spread and then they just totally dick
- 33:37it up for everybody yeah i mean,
- 33:40i don't ever unless you're really close i don't ever rip on someone right away
- 33:45if they set up close to us like i'll be i'll throw a little tantrum a little
- 33:49pouty fit maybe for an hour,
- 33:53but i'll let them do their thing and as soon as they kind of screw us once it's
- 33:58like all right now yeah i see what you're gonna be but if you can be a respectful
- 34:02human being out there and,
- 34:04treat someone the same way you want to be treated going back to like the private ground
- 34:07you know if you if you respect the hunter next to you or the party next to you
- 34:12you're gonna get the same well not always but you're gonna get the same thing
- 34:15more often than not back yeah i like to believe at least and i i try to be as
- 34:20cordial as i can and as friendly as i can when it comes to that stuff.
- 34:23Otherwise, it just leads to drama.
- 34:25And while drama is fun, it also gets old and annoying quick.
- 34:31Especially when you're all out there to do the same thing. And especially when
- 34:33you have a boat that everybody knows.
- 34:37Yeah. Yeah. Everybody knows what my boat or trailer looks like in my truck.
- 34:41So I don't really need that problems.
- 34:44I don't have enough problems. Yeah. The thing about like where we hunt to,
- 34:49some of the places that we hunt, like they can be a hundred yards behind you,
- 34:54but it's a totally different pocket.
- 34:56Like when you look at it on the map, it's a totally different area, so to say.
- 35:01Especially now. Now that a lot of our habitats came back compared to,
- 35:05what, five years ago when we had just some ditch weed growing out there. That was it.
- 35:10And you could see miles.
- 35:13Like, you could see a duck coming for an hour before it got there.
- 35:16It's like, here he comes, boys. Get ready.
- 35:19When's he coming? We already ate breakfast and everything. Tomorrow.
- 35:25But no, I get what you mean there. because if you're hunting a whole other timber
- 35:31hole or whatever it is, I mean, obviously, you're in a different area.
- 35:35So it's a little bit easier to manage then too.
- 35:39Still all boils down to how you respect it though.
- 35:42No matter what. No matter what. I mean, this old saying still goes.
- 35:47You get the respect that you give.
- 35:49I mean, it's not always the case, but whether you're on private or public,
- 35:53Like it's, you're going to get what you give nine times out of 10.
- 35:59Well, what kinds of different types of strategies do you like to do out pheasant
- 36:04hunting? Screw pheasant.
- 36:08A hostin. What a loser. A big bad pheasant hunter.
- 36:15Hate this episode i love it no i
- 36:19do too i really hope he pops in here so we can just roast him to his face and
- 36:23then he texted me 10 minutes ago said he's heading home so i don't know how
- 36:28far away his training was but the whole listening audience is about to hear
- 36:33us roast austin when he pops in here yeah no he's gonna hate life,
- 36:39but it's hard to for me it's hard to even compare like a public versus a private
- 36:45setup Cause we always hunt water on public and all of my private stuff.
- 36:49And I think you're the same way as all fields.
- 36:54There's there's some ponds that i've hunted but i mean for the most part yeah
- 36:59it's mostly fields that are private yeah i have some ponds that i can hunt too
- 37:04and i'm usually just like man 10 ducks or a couple thousand we can we can try
- 37:10to hunt i'll take the couple thousand,
- 37:12it's gotta be a pretty unreal pond for
- 37:15me to go duck hunt it now goose hunting i'll go hunt a pond yeah
- 37:18for sure especially if they're coming in in singles and
- 37:21pairs that that can be some of the most fun hunts when you hunt a private pond
- 37:26that the geese are coming in and just singles pairs or groups of threes that's
- 37:30a blast especially especially because you can damn near guarantee wherever your
- 37:34decoys are at they are going to suck directly to those it is freaking awesome,
- 37:39yes and i love the singles because then
- 37:42you get like we usually tell like before
- 37:46it comes as it's coming in we're saying who's shooting it it's always
- 37:49fun to roast the guy that misses on that single
- 37:52yep that has got to be the best
- 37:55part about it that was another austin story from the
- 37:57weekend he did that oh he did tell me about
- 38:00that yep yeah pulled up and whiffed it don't don't worry i i cleaned it up for
- 38:05him oh at least you were there it was within 50 yards too i was shocked i thought
- 38:13i was believing the story until there i don't believe it now i thought i was gonna miss it too.
- 38:22Yeah i mean for me like
- 38:26when it comes to setups in a field more
- 38:29apt to like spread the decoys out and get
- 38:32them farther away on on water i don't want to set a decoy out of my shooting
- 38:37range period yep in a field though i'll i'll spread decoys out 100 yards if
- 38:43not more sometimes it kind of backfires on you a little bit but nine times out
- 38:47of ten wherever you put that dense spot and where that Collins coming from is
- 38:50where they're going to go on a field. Yep.
- 38:53And water they they sometimes a lot of times
- 38:56will just skirt the edge of that decoy at 100 yards and say
- 38:59i'll see you yeah they almost always do yeah i yell at somebody every time they
- 39:04put a decoy that's like well would you shoot that far well no well then don't
- 39:08put the freaking decoy there now i'm getting mad oh i love it when you get grumpy
- 39:14i heard you got grumpy this weekend,
- 39:18I did. I threw a full tantrum.
- 39:20I threw my calls and everything. I was pissed.
- 39:23I can't remember if you told me, but I know Austin was telling me about it.
- 39:26Or somebody, or maybe, did you tell me about it? I think I did.
- 39:30It was a damn good one. I haven't had a blow up like that in a long time.
- 39:35Had to clean some sand out of your calls, I heard? Yeah, it took me like an hour.
- 39:40Oh, that's rough. An hour and two bottles of water. Two of the big Casey's bottles of water.
- 39:47How froze up were your calls after that? Because it was pretty cold, wasn't it?
- 39:51Yeah, it was chilly, but I had a heater blasting on me, so I wouldn't,
- 39:54I don't even know if they froze, honestly.
- 39:58But yeah, that morning was just, every little thing that could go wrong went
- 40:01wrong, and I had enough. I lost my shit.
- 40:06Now you understand. I get it. We all have our breakdowns once in a while.
- 40:12I mean, I would never do that. It was funny though, because it was exactly like
- 40:16when you have your little meltdowns, everybody just gets super quiet.
- 40:20And I just had to sit there and like, I turned around and I started laughing
- 40:23and I'm like, I, I, yep. I've been on that end before.
- 40:27Yeah. I know. It's always a terrible feeling after the fact,
- 40:30like after you like threw your fit and you sit there and think about it like, fuck.
- 40:35Like a jackass. Now I got to clean 20 pounds of sand out of my freaking calls.
- 40:40This is going to be great. I've never had to do that.
- 40:43Yeah, I'm telling you, dude, it was a full-fledged meltdown. It was bad.
- 40:49I have that on them big jobs, though. I felt way better after, though.
- 40:55So, kind of like our next two topics here in that strategy section are based off of calling styles.
- 41:03So, I mean, for me, my calling style has changed definitely,
- 41:08not even just by the day, but by the hour or by the group of ducks.
- 41:13I mean, every group's different and every group's going to do something different.
- 41:17I mean, they're birds. They have the brain the size of a peanut,
- 41:20but they can see everything. Yep.
- 41:24My calling styles change definitely more for private ground than, than on the public.
- 41:31Cause the private ground, but
- 41:32I'm hunting a field to put on what the geese want, but I try to be softer.
- 41:36Once I get their attention, I ain't doing much. Nope.
- 41:40Just a couple of clocks or a moan. Or if I'm, if I'm duck hunting,
- 41:43it's, I hate feed chuckling, but I will do a ton of it in a field.
- 41:47And that's just to kind of keep
- 41:49their intent, like draw their attention to where I want them to finish at.
- 41:54Yeah. Yeah, a chuckle or one of those little soft quack sequences are absolutely
- 41:59freaking killer in the field. Yeah.
- 42:02But when it's windy out, man, I'm shredding it.
- 42:07I'm going to be as loud as I possibly can for as long as I can just to make
- 42:12sure that they do it where we want because they can't.
- 42:15Just imagine, I mean, I feel like a duck or a goose can hear super well because
- 42:20obviously when they're,
- 42:22people never believe me that they can hear you hear me whenever they're way
- 42:25up there look like little dots in the sky
- 42:27you start ripping on them and also they start peeling out of the sky and
- 42:31they're like i can't believe you called those ducks and they can hear way better
- 42:34than you think oh yeah i always think it's funny when we hunt with a bigger
- 42:38group and you and i do it all the time we'll see that lone honker way the hell
- 42:43up there yep screw it let's try it next thing you know that thing's in the decoys
- 42:48and dead people are like how in the hell did you do that and it's like you gotta try i guess,
- 42:54you never know if you don't call it every single bird that flies by I call it
- 42:59crows too yeah yeah you do yeah crows are fun sometimes they talk back they
- 43:07usually do yeah I even tend to call it the seagull just when we're really bored,
- 43:13the flight radar the flight radar app is awesome for those clear days you look
- 43:19up and where's that plane going yeah.
- 43:25Uh, I mean, you, what are your thoughts for Colin Stiles?
- 43:30Like you said, definitely way softer in a private field. I mean,
- 43:36you don't have any other hunting pressure around you.
- 43:39Like you said, once you get them, once you get their attention,
- 43:42it's pretty, pretty cut and dry.
- 43:44They're cupped up and on the deck. I mean, you don't really have to do a whole lot.
- 43:49Same thing with ducks. like you just once you get their attention and spinners
- 43:54in a field are a freaking act of god,
- 43:57especially when it's sunny out i've had days
- 44:00that you have all the goose decoys out and you put one spinner out and it's
- 44:03sunny they just absolutely suck right to that thing we've talked about it before
- 44:08we don't really care for them on the water just because every every like you
- 44:13said tom dick and harry has them sometimes it's better just to be different
- 44:17but in a field dude those things are a must. Absolute must.
- 44:23Yeah, I don't think I've ever field-hunted and targeted ducks and didn't have at least two out.
- 44:30I mean, I'm talking like I'm going to try to put four out, but I don't even
- 44:34own four. I own two that work.
- 44:36I own like 12, but two work. Yeah.
- 44:42But yeah, calling on private is a lot easier on the lungs than calling on public.
- 44:48I would agree with you on that, except for our last day in North Dakota.
- 44:53I heard about that.
- 44:56I've never had to call so much at geese in my life other than that day.
- 45:01I think it's because there was just so many of them and they were making so
- 45:05much noise that they'd just lose interest if they didn't hear you just completely
- 45:09ripping on them until you said, take him. Yeah.
- 45:13That was, that was, it was really cool. I wish they would have came in a little
- 45:17bit more spaced out because as soon as you took your shots and killed your birds
- 45:23out of that group you were calling at,
- 45:25you had to load your gun and cover up and call as hard and as fast and as loud as you could again.
- 45:31That sucked. Yeah.
- 45:35I had the same thing this weekend on the river too, though. Like we started
- 45:38off calling, like obviously you'd hit them harder when they're further away
- 45:41and slow down as they come in.
- 45:43They just wouldn't quite commit all the way. And then there was one time I said,
- 45:48fuck it and just hammered them all the way to the hole.
- 45:51And it was insane. Night and day different.
- 45:53I love the way geese do it on water.
- 45:56Big ass feet hanging out there. Gaining for a band.
- 46:00We had them doing maple leafs and backflips and all kinds of shit this weekend
- 46:05too it was definitely a weekend I should have brought the camera but we didn't
- 46:08quite have enough guys to make it worth,
- 46:11not shooting geese they were showing you all their trick shots that was cool,
- 46:19I mean you know one thing that I wish we could have but I just don't I don't
- 46:26think it would work in a lot of scenarios for where we hunt is a trailer blind.
- 46:30Yeah. Because I would enjoy field hunting so much more if I didn't have to sit
- 46:33in a layout blind and freeze my nuts off. Mm-hmm.
- 46:37But, I mean, field hunting can be so rewarding, but.
- 46:41Onto the boat is just so much warmer. Yeah. And you get breakfast.
- 46:46Yeah. Hot breakfast, not no honey bun or whatever the hell people bring in their
- 46:51blinds nowadays that you got to stick on top of the buddy heater so it thaws
- 46:54out because it's freaking 10 degrees out and that thing's harder than a rock.
- 46:59Bro, if you're putting, if you're fitting a buddy heater in your layout blind,
- 47:02you are living life on the edge.
- 47:04Yeah, I was thinking an A-frame. My bad. My bad, G. My bad.
- 47:09I want to see you do it. we'll have a little campfire out there. No, not gonna happen.
- 47:15I do wonder if they make like a, I wish they made like a little battery powered,
- 47:20space heater that you could put in a layout blind. I'm gonna have to do some looking on that.
- 47:23That'd be sick. That would be sick because I've tried the, like the heated back pads and shit.
- 47:29They just don't do it. By the time you bundle up, you can't even feel it. No.
- 47:34My biggest thing for a layout, like, obviously if I'm hunting a field,
- 47:37nine times out of ten it's gonna be in a layout because you can hide them The best.
- 47:42But I hate, I'm not a big guy, but I just hate having, like,
- 47:46the way you have to come out of a layout blind to shoot.
- 47:49I'm not the quickest at it. I don't know why. I'm just not. I'm not either. I never have been. Yeah.
- 47:55Maybe I should start doing more crunches before hunting season, before goose season.
- 47:59But I've just never been quick and fast at like pulling up and shoulder in the gun.
- 48:05I'm not the guy that can just jump out and go.
- 48:08That's why like hunting, like out of a layout in a field, I always hate it when
- 48:13the geese like try to come from behind you and you get stuck with that.
- 48:18Like you got to roll over and do all that acrobatic shit.
- 48:22I absolutely hate that. Cause I'm the last one out of the blind.
- 48:25But maybe that's where I learned how to shoot 50, 60 yards like nothing. Could be.
- 48:32Speaking of layout blind hunting, Pookie had a really hard time in North Dakota,
- 48:37hunting out of that layout because he kept hitting his safety.
- 48:40He wouldn't even get his shot off. He'd pull up, and he'd hit his safety.
- 48:45He had a right-handed gun, and he shoots left-handed, so it wasn't working out
- 48:48for him. We'll let him weigh in on the situation since he just beeped in. Hi, Pookie.
- 48:54What's going on? What's going on?
- 48:57Oh, you know, they're just talking about you. Talking about me?
- 49:01Yep. Not talking to you because you weren't here. Yeah, I'm sorry.
- 49:05I did not think that tonight was going to take as long as it did.
- 49:10I trust that you guys handled it and are getting these good people a bunch of
- 49:16useless information from you, too. Damn.
- 49:20Can you read what's scrolling across the screen right now? That's the first
- 49:25thing I saw When I popped in.
- 49:30You just wait till you hear the intro The intro was good I can only imagine
- 49:34I'll listen to it tomorrow When I go to work Yeah no it's You'll love it It's
- 49:39gonna go well Good Good So We were just talking about,
- 49:46layout blinds and fields and your struggle you
- 49:48were having with your gun in north dakota for
- 49:52your first time yeah that oversized safety
- 49:55on that uh winchester sx4 that
- 49:58i hunt with is i mean i love
- 50:01it absolutely but just with me
- 50:04being left-handed and that being a right-handed gun so naturally everything
- 50:07works against me was definitely a
- 50:10challenge that i was not ready for and then it just kind of carried back in
- 50:16like I had never done it until we went to North Dakota and then even when we
- 50:20returned to North Dakota and started hunting in Iowa again I'm like I'm doing
- 50:25it still so I think maybe like,
- 50:28subconsciously it fucked with me a little bit and then I started overthinking about
- 50:32it and continued to do it but with the help of you
- 50:34guys we got it figured out got the safety switched and then this past weekend
- 50:40didn't happen once so you're welcome i sacrificed my truck for that yeah i do
- 50:45appreciate you you sacrificed your truck for him to still lift a single i did
- 50:50oh yeah no don't worry don't worry.
- 50:55Yeah, it's true. We did just discuss that too, how you were whiffing on singles
- 50:59and sure shot Cade had to clean up.
- 51:03Whoa, relax. It was one. If I do recall, Cade's gun got stuck and a bird that
- 51:10definitely should have died got out too.
- 51:12I don't want to point me. But I didn't miss the one that was in the fucking
- 51:16decoys like you did. No, neither did I.
- 51:19We shot those two together that were standing in the decoys.
- 51:26Were you guys just letting them eat some sand before they got out of there or
- 51:29what yeah no we were definitely letting them get comfy like we were hoping that
- 51:33they would just invite more of their homies over but that didn't work they invited
- 51:38one that was off my end and my freaking,
- 51:41charge handle got stuck in the blind so by the time he got by the time i got
- 51:47up he was out far enough that i wasn't even comfortable shooting it and i would
- 51:50have shot him right in the ass Didn't have a boat.
- 51:53It was just my dog. And I'm like, I'm not even sending him on that.
- 51:57Whoa. What do you mean it was just your dog? We're talking about Hank here.
- 52:01Dude, that would have been a freaking 200-yard swim by the time he got to that thing.
- 52:05He'd have been so pumped. And he probably could have walked half of it.
- 52:09Not where that thing was at. Really?
- 52:11It was definitely going towards the deeper side. Yes.
- 52:16He still would have been pumped about it. He would have been pumped to try it. He would have.
- 52:20Oh, don't worry. We gotta go back and refuel for snacks.
- 52:24Dawson shot enough birds in the ass that Hank got plenty of time in the water. That's a fact.
- 52:31Good. I'm sure he just loved his time out there. Yep. He was enjoying it.
- 52:36I actually had to call him off a mallard.
- 52:38I was surprised he listened to me. But then that thing dove and never surfaced.
- 52:45At least you can call your dog off, Ducks. When Ellie's on it,
- 52:49partly because I think she's deaf, but,
- 52:52care she's just going for it no it was tough i had to shock the shit out of
- 52:56him so you had a shot color see i don't run ellie's shot color anymore because
- 53:00i i tried it i would zap the shit out of her and she just kind of look back
- 53:05like fuck you and keep going this is my bird,
- 53:10see if i even whack if i whack hank on like the first level he does a horrendous
- 53:17yell and he fucking hates that thing so i kind of got him by the non-existent balls there,
- 53:23He pretty much just says that you don't love him anymore and he's done.
- 53:28He won't let me get this dog. I hate it here. Taking my ball and I'm going home.
- 53:36So we were just talking about A-frames versus layouts in the field.
- 53:41Obviously, I voiced my opinion on that.
- 53:44What is y'all's opinion on that? Or the trailer blind thing.
- 53:49The trailer blind would be sick if you could hide it. I mean I feel like you
- 53:53could if you did it right you could stubble that thing with corn and I don't
- 53:56feel like it would look that bad,
- 53:58especially on like a cloudy day where you don't have a lot of shadows I think
- 54:01you could get away with it,
- 54:02I think you could hide a trailer blind easier than an A-frame though because
- 54:06it looks more like a grass patch or like a yeah whatever in the field I've never
- 54:12hunted out of one so I don't I can't really,
- 54:14speak on that I've done it once like hunting out of the boat it's freaking awesome,
- 54:18we should build one they're expensive,
- 54:22Dawson has one he built one his out of wood right yeah yeah,
- 54:28gotta be heavy as shit yeah but yeah obviously layouts are the best for concealment
- 54:35what are you doing just looking at continue look at that austin over there what's he got going on.
- 54:47Layouts are the best for concealment obviously if you have like a a fence row
- 54:52that's got some trees in it or some really really really tall grass you can
- 54:56hide an a-frame just fine but But I hate when people just stuff them full of
- 55:00corn and put them right in the middle of a field.
- 55:03Every time we do that, I'm like, what the hell?
- 55:07Have you ever had luck doing that? Putting an A-frame out in the middle of a field? Only in the snow.
- 55:12Do you? And by snow, I mean. So did you run a snow cover? No.
- 55:16And then just grassed it and then threw snow on it?
- 55:19Didn't even throw snow on it. It was just, it was legit. Like that day we hunted
- 55:23out of the boat, it was snowing that hard. So I don't think they could even see it.
- 55:28But every other time that I've tried it in the middle of a field,
- 55:31even with snow and like you throw snow on the blind, it never works well.
- 55:36I've seen guys have good luck doing it, but every time I've tried it,
- 55:39I don't kill anything that day. It's terrible.
- 55:42You're warm, but you don't kill shit. Yeah.
- 55:45Warm and more. I mean, I think A-frames are so much more comfortable than layouts, but.
- 55:52I don't know. I'm taking some fat naps in a layout, dude. Oh, as have I. Yeah.
- 55:58You heard me snoring sitting beside you? Huh? You heard me snoring in a layoff laying beside you?
- 56:06I took like a... Go ahead. Especially with that heater body seat you got? Night-night. Yeah.
- 56:12I... The birds are here.
- 56:16Whenever Austin and Zach went scouting one day in North Dakota in like the middle
- 56:19of the day when we really didn't think anything was going to fly,
- 56:22me and Trevor stayed behind.
- 56:24I took the fattest nap I've ever taken in a layoff line before.
- 56:27I'm pretty sure I had to be snoring, but I slept for probably two hours,
- 56:31hour and a half, two hours.
- 56:32That's impressive. I was, I was tired. Sleepy boy.
- 56:39Say when you brush in layouts in a
- 56:41field incredibly well like it
- 56:45it always makes me feel really good if we're like doing a whole day sit in a
- 56:50field or something we hunt the morning and then decide to go eat lunch and by
- 56:53the time you get back to the to the truck to head out and you turn around and
- 56:57look at your decoys and you can't even tell where your blinds are yeah i really
- 57:01like looking at that yeah it's nice,
- 57:05especially if like if it's a low stubble field and you kind of talk to the landowner beforehand,
- 57:11and you kind of dig those blinds in a little bit like you dig a little one foot
- 57:15deep area I mean I've never done more than a foot but you dig that foot down
- 57:20and put those blinds in those holes,
- 57:23you can be invisible then for sure a lot of work though that sucks,
- 57:29especially when it's cold out and the ground's like not fully frozen but it's
- 57:33soft enough you can do it just absolutely sucks gets all crunchy,
- 57:39yeah dude the dog's out there digging get to work yeah no kidding yeah just
- 57:45tell Ellie there's like a million rocks in this little patch dude she'd have
- 57:48it done in like five minutes I know,
- 57:51unless it's her nap time then she ain't doing shit,
- 57:55like right now yeah yeah.
- 57:59Let's just kind of go over what we've talked about here As we kind of close
- 58:04up this episode I mean we've discussed a few topics here Private versus public Talked about,
- 58:12Respecting private ground If it's not yours Treat it the way you would want
- 58:17someone To treat your house if they came in there,
- 58:20Don't just leave it trashed You know if you go to a field And it's a guy that
- 58:24you've never hunted before If you leave it and it looks like You've never been
- 58:28there I promise you he's going to let you hunt it again the next year unless
- 58:32somebody else came in and hunted it and ruined it.
- 58:35But even then, you still probably have a fat chance of trying to get hunted again.
- 58:40Ground. I mean, stay at your ground. Don't let anybody talk back to you.
- 58:44Slap them in the face and kill ducks.
- 58:48Simple as that. Don't even let Austin fuck with you. No. I mean,
- 58:52he's turning into a deer hunter now anyways, so we won't see much more of him. Wow.
- 58:57Wow. That's, for somebody that's stuck in a different state,
- 59:02not hunting at all and not contributing to our hunting, that's criminal. Not contributing.
- 59:09Yeah. Whoa, those are some big words. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:15What did you think about doing this weekend for hunting?
- 59:18I'm not hunting anything. Oh, you're not going to go now? It's closed.
- 59:23Yeah, okay. You know, because it's crazy that I could have swore you had talked
- 59:27about using an ice eater possibly in a pond, you know.
- 59:31Yeah, I found this ice eater in front of somebody's house.
- 59:36Oddly enough oddly enough I'm sitting here looking at it I'll just change the
- 59:40code on my garage so he can't get in,
- 59:42that's crazy I'll kick the door down I was gonna say do you think a door is
- 59:48gonna stop him no dude I know a lady that's not afraid to hit stuff run right
- 59:54through that garage door.
- 59:59Damn see what she can do to a pickup just imagine what she'll do to your garage door R.I.P.
- 1:00:06Take that, Cade. I lose.
- 1:00:10Ha ha. No, actually, you win. Insurance comes through clutch.
- 1:00:14Yeah. But I have a lot of shit in here that she would mess up.
- 1:00:18Mm-hmm. You don't got no fucking tools, because we asked for tools the other
- 1:00:21day, and you couldn't find a screwdriver.
- 1:00:24That is fair. That is fair. It's all at the race shop. Not here.
- 1:00:32I mean, do you have any... Anything you wanted to touch on? I don't know if
- 1:00:37you have the dock open, Austin, but...
- 1:00:40I looked over the dock, just kind of looked through the closing thoughts and so on and so forth.
- 1:00:47I haven't really decided what I'll do this weekend if I get that ice heater thrown together.
- 1:00:52I already have permission on a couple different ponds that we could at least
- 1:00:56test it out on and, I mean, see how it works for different size ponds,
- 1:01:01different depths, and how much water it can clear and how long it takes to kind
- 1:01:05of report back to you guys for so on and so forth through the rest of goose season.
- 1:01:11But we'll see what this weekend brings.
- 1:01:13What, obviously, with you guys not being around, if I do it solo or see if anybody
- 1:01:19else wants to try to tackle that with me.
- 1:01:22Cade's not going to be around, dude. This dude's just skipping out on hunting
- 1:01:26season now. He's just part-timer.
- 1:01:28Part-time. Kind of like Austin's podcast career, part-time. Yes. Boom-roasted.
- 1:01:34Yep. Yep. Ducks are over around home, so I'm gypping state.
- 1:01:39That's crazy. Ducks are over around home. All you have to do is drive three miles south.
- 1:01:45How many ducks are three miles south? I don't know. Enough.
- 1:01:49I bet there's a little. What do you mean enough? You got home from work and
- 1:01:53took a nap. You didn't go see how many ducks are south.
- 1:01:56I bet we could at least find eight mallards south.
- 1:02:02No, he's probably right on that one. And you can probably find at least eight.
- 1:02:08It's all right, though. I get it. Take a weekend off. Come back well-rested for after the split.
- 1:02:14We'll get after it for the last about a month, month and a week.
- 1:02:19Hopefully daddy's home. I'm going to tell you right now, I'm going to be the
- 1:02:22polar opposite of well-rested.
- 1:02:24Good. Are you on partying? Yeah. Yes.
- 1:02:31Heck yeah. Hopefully I get some good Snapchat. Yeah, drunk snaps from Cade.
- 1:02:36I've been saving it all dog season. I'm ready to rip you know how he's been
- 1:02:40making fun of us for listening to Pink Pony Club,
- 1:02:43he's gonna do it he's gonna do it I will just for you yes yes I'm saving that
- 1:02:49Snapchat too 100% yeah absolutely,
- 1:02:53that'll be our first one of our first reels on Instagram when we start posting
- 1:02:57on Instagram more as you should yeah,
- 1:03:01I mean, I don't know if I'm fully going to be transitioning to geese when I come home.
- 1:03:07I mean, I'm going to go goose hunting, but I still have the appetite to kill ducks.
- 1:03:13So, I mean, a trip to a different state is never off the table.
- 1:03:18I still have plenty of vacation to use.
- 1:03:21We did talk about that today. Cade has vacation coming up too. I do.
- 1:03:26Not that he'll use it though, because Cade doesn't use vacation.
- 1:03:29No, he actually hates us. Yeah.
- 1:03:33I'm trying to save it so we can go on a trip next year. Come on now.
- 1:03:37Allegedly. Yeah. I'll believe it when he shows up.
- 1:03:41Damn. Yeah. He's, he probably would cancel.
- 1:03:46Well, what about three weeks, two and a half, three weeks before the trip. I hate it here.
- 1:03:51I'm taking my ball and I'm going home. We had to switch it up a little bit.
- 1:03:54I mean, me and you've been roasting Austin.
- 1:03:57I can only imagine the shit. I'm going to hear when I listen to this tomorrow morning.
- 1:04:03I'm not going to lie. It was pretty chill compared to what it could have been.
- 1:04:08I had thought about saying more, but I really didn't want to hurt your feelings
- 1:04:11because, you know, you've been kind of a little bitch lately in tech.
- 1:04:15Yeah, I'm so fragile, and I do appreciate you looking out for my feelings like that.
- 1:04:21Yeah, so think about that whenever you do listen to the rest of the episode
- 1:04:25tomorrow, that it could have been much worse. Good deal.
- 1:04:29But yeah I mean this was fun I'm glad you could join us for the last I don't
- 1:04:33know 8 minutes 9 minutes something like that I've been on for like 20 ish or
- 1:04:38so now I don't know if I buy that it could be,
- 1:04:42I'll edit it down to where my 9 minutes is correct there you go.
- 1:04:48Anything you guys would like to add before we close up this motherfucking shop,
- 1:04:55I feel like Kooky should add something.
- 1:04:57I mean, dude, as much as he talked Thursday, oh, we'll add that.
- 1:05:01We'll let Austin add what happened this past Thursday real quick.
- 1:05:05Oh, yeah. I didn't know if you guys had already talked about that or not. No.
- 1:05:08So we got the opportunity to go on another podcast with some of my buddies.
- 1:05:14They are primarily in the deer and turkey hunting world.
- 1:05:20We'd love it if you guys go over and give their podcast with us.
- 1:05:23I think it ended up being like just over two hours long. Did they post it?
- 1:05:29No, no, no. They're, but they're like complete are almost completely done editing it at this point.
- 1:05:36So just over two hours long of straight up shit talking back and forth between acorn cow hunters.
- 1:05:45And so the real legends here. Correct.
- 1:05:49Yeah. So yeah, go and give them a look. they're on all platforms of social media
- 1:05:55facebook tiktok instagram their podcast is also posted on apple spotify all
- 1:06:02the all the major ones living legends outdoors really good group of guys,
- 1:06:07it was it was a lot of fun i wish tyler would have been able to be there in
- 1:06:11person i think the banter would have even been better in it but no we i mean
- 1:06:15i got i got mad and hung up at one point yeah that's fair,
- 1:06:20that's fair he uh yeah Tyler didn't Tyler didn't get a lot of words and Cade
- 1:06:26and I did a lot of the talking Austin did a lot of the talking I did yeah well
- 1:06:31if yeah if you want to hear Austin talk just go to that podcast and listen to it cause he
- 1:06:35talked like three fourths of the episode it was crazy mind blowing,
- 1:06:39sorry I had a lot to say did I say anything bad I don't know I haven't listened
- 1:06:44to the podcast yet oh fair enough.
- 1:06:48No that was it was a lot of fun though I enjoyed it a little bit different style podcast but,
- 1:06:54of good dudes and it was a lot of fun i will say for
- 1:06:57as many dudes that were on that podcast there wasn't
- 1:07:00a whole lot of talking over people that went
- 1:07:04it went pretty well on that side of it really and
- 1:07:08uh hopefully tyler can see their setup sometime in person because
- 1:07:11their setup that they have for it is is
- 1:07:14pretty sweet the the table and everything and
- 1:07:17all the all the mics around i wish their chairs were a
- 1:07:20little a little easier to use but they're they're
- 1:07:24set up in one of the guys basements is is pretty
- 1:07:27sweet we're gonna go over there when i get home and
