- 0:00What's up y'all? It's friendly.
- 0:03Welcome back to another episode in a fresh new week.
- 0:07I am so excited to be with y'all today and just want to emphasize
- 0:13that this space is about really slowing down long enough to let
- 0:17God's Word actually shape how we live and not just what we know.
- 0:22So today we're going to be in Matthew chapter 22, verses 34
- 0:27through 40. And this is the passage that
- 0:30talks about Jesus giving the greatest commandment.
- 0:33And I want to be honest, these verses are very familiar.
- 0:36I think to most they can be so familiar that they may even
- 0:40sound cliche if we're not careful.
- 0:43But I just want to emphasize that being familiar does not
- 0:47mean that we've mastered them. I know I for sure have not.
- 0:51And it was such an important reminder for me.
- 0:54And so I do want to dig a little deeper into what this really
- 0:58means and practical application of it.
- 1:02So starting in verse 34, hearing that Jesus had silenced the
- 1:07Sadducees, the Pharisees got together.
- 1:10One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this
- 1:13question. Teacher, which is the greatest
- 1:16commandment in the law? Jesus replied.
- 1:20Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
- 1:24and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest
- 1:29commandment, and the second is like it.
- 1:32Love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the prophets
- 1:37hang on these two commandments. OK, so going into a little bit
- 1:43of context, what is really happening here?
- 1:46The Pharisees, they're they're back again.
- 1:50And at this point, I think we've seen this pattern.
- 1:52They are a religious group who are trying to trap Jesus, and we
- 1:58saw them in two episodes ago when they were trying to trick
- 2:01him with the question about Roman taxes.
- 2:04Yet they failed. They were theologically defeated
- 2:08by Jesus. And instead of humbling
- 2:11themselves and accepting the defeat, they just keep pressing
- 2:15him, which is honestly, I had to kind of laugh about it.
- 2:20It's wild when you think about it because they're literally
- 2:23questioning the Son of God, like the God who created them and
- 2:29their brains and their logic and their ability to even ask these
- 2:33questions in the 1st place. So anyways, that was a little
- 2:37side note. But their problem, it was not
- 2:40confusion, it was their pride, because they cared more about
- 2:44looking right than actually being right.
- 2:48They wanted the image and appearance of victory, something
- 2:52to feed their ego rather than the truth that they would have
- 2:55to carry out. And I do want to say, before we
- 2:59judge them too harshly, Scripture checks us in Matthew 7
- 3:04when it commands us to take the plank out of your own eye before
- 3:09you try to take the speck of sawdust out of your neighbors.
- 3:11So I do want to just ask everyone as I asked myself, have
- 3:17we ever chosen what was wrong because it was easier or stayed
- 3:22in something that God was clearly calling you out of or
- 3:26gone along with the crowd instead of obeying God because
- 3:30maybe standing alone would feel more uncomfortable.
- 3:33So I do think that this can hit closer to home than maybe we
- 3:37would like or take away from first glance.
- 3:41But why the Pharisees are asking this question?
- 3:45So they followed over 600 laws. So when they're asking Jesus
- 3:52which commandment matters the most, it's basically them
- 3:55saying, OK, so realistically, what do we need to prioritize?
- 4:01And that's still a relevant question, honestly, because even
- 4:04today, when we are listening to experts, we see in this passage
- 4:09that it's an expert in the law asking Jesus.
- 4:12But experts today are like doctors and teachers,
- 4:16researchers, even influencers. We have to remember that yes,
- 4:22knowledge matters, education matters, but every human, no
- 4:26matter their experience, is still flawed.
- 4:30But here's the thing, God's Word is not Scripture must be our
- 4:36foundation. It is unchanging, and nothing
- 4:39that we believe, no matter what we hear, should contradict
- 4:43Scripture. So we do need to be paying
- 4:46attention to what we're absorbing and prioritizing who
- 4:50we're allowing to influence us, especially when social media is
- 4:55all around us and we're constantly consuming it.
- 4:59So Jesus's answer? He responds by quoting
- 5:03Deuteronomy and Leviticus. Put simply, he says love God,
- 5:09love your neighbor. That's it.
- 5:12He says. Everything else, all of the
- 5:15laws, the 10 commandments and the Old Testament laws that they
- 5:18had, they all hinged on these two things.
- 5:23When you truly love God with every part of who you are, it
- 5:28naturally flows into how you treat what and who He's made,
- 5:33including people. Because think about it, if you
- 5:36love God and you love people, you're not going to want to
- 5:40steal from them. You're not going to want to
- 5:42cheat them. You won't be looking for
- 5:45excuses. And when I went back and read
- 5:48Leviticus, it says in chapter 19, verse one, it sums up the
- 5:55purpose of the law so well. The Lord is commanding us be
- 5:59holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.
- 6:03And it's easy to, whenever you go back and read Leviticus, like
- 6:09see all these do's and don'ts. But God's commands, they're not
- 6:13meant to overwhelm us. They're meant to shape a set
- 6:17apart people for him. We were created to be holy
- 6:21vessels and ambassadors of Christ.
- 6:24So I do want to go into knowledge versus wisdom because
- 6:29this really does matter. We see in Psalm 1/11/10 it says
- 6:34the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 6:38And this is a verse I memorized a few weeks ago, but it really
- 6:42stood out to me so strongly here because the Pharisees, they had
- 6:47the knowledge and the information, but they lacked the
- 6:50wisdom. They knew the law and the
- 6:53commands, but they didn't live it from reverence or love.
- 6:57And put simply, wisdom is learning how to apply what you
- 7:03know. It's letting the truth actually
- 7:05change you. And the Pharisees tried to live
- 7:08out the law without first surrendering to the Lord.
- 7:11And it turned into something shallow because they were
- 7:14missing the heart behind the laws.
- 7:17The law was never about control or spiritual authority or image.
- 7:22It was about honoring God out of love and deepening their
- 7:27relationship with him. And I used to kind of get
- 7:32confused whenever I would hear the fear of the Lord because you
- 7:35hear fear. And I used to automatically be
- 7:38like, OK, anxiety or just, you know, it's not necessarily a
- 7:43like a positive term. But the more I learned about it,
- 7:48it comes from such an awe of God and his power and holiness that
- 7:55it turns into a deep respect. And everything that you do and
- 8:00think about, you just want to respect him and love him.
- 8:04So I want to also talk about how Jesus doesn't just say love God.
- 8:11He breaks it down by heart, by soul and by mind.
- 8:15And I believe that is so intentional.
- 8:18Whenever I was reading different translations, in the passion
- 8:22translation, it says for heart with every passion of your
- 8:27heart. So I do just want us to go into
- 8:29these three, Ask yourself for the first one for your heart.
- 8:33Does anything get more of your passion than God?
- 8:38Anyone. Anything for your soul in the
- 8:42passion it says with all the energy of your being.
- 8:46So what takes most of your energy?
- 8:48Is God the central or is something you squeeze in when
- 8:53you have time. And then for your mind, the
- 8:56third one, passion says with every thought within you, what
- 9:01consumes most of your thoughts during the day?
- 9:05Is it God or is it your own effort, your own priorities?
- 9:10And here's something important in the commentary, the Hebrew,
- 9:14it says the word is translated as love, but it also means
- 9:19worship. So your entire life, it is meant
- 9:24to be worship. This is not reserved just for
- 9:27church or your quiet time in the mornings.
- 9:31This implies your job, your classes in school, your
- 9:35workouts, every single conversation that you have.
- 9:39We see in Romans 1136, Paul's tell Paul tells us for from him
- 9:45and through him and for him are all things.
- 9:49So God is not meant to just be added into your life.
- 9:52He is meant to be the center of everything and then touching on
- 9:58OK, loving your neighbor as yourself.
- 10:01That implies that something that we don't always talk about.
- 10:05You have to understand your own value first, and I don't say
- 10:09this as in a prideful self-centered way.
- 10:13I think this world can paint it in a way that just overdoes it
- 10:18and it's all about self. But we must know whose we are
- 10:25first because your identity in Christ, it shapes how you treat
- 10:30others. We have to ask him for a humble
- 10:34confidence, a humility to know that we're defined by Jesus and
- 10:39who God says we are, but a confidence to carry ourselves
- 10:43with that and to not let other people or other things define
- 10:48us. And I just want to say, if you
- 10:51struggle with your worth or value, don't avoid asking God.
- 10:56Ask Him to help you see yourself the way that He sees you.
- 11:00He's not distant from that prayer.
- 11:02He invites us in to ask Him to communicate that with us, even
- 11:07when it's vulnerable. So with all that, I'm going to
- 11:10go ahead and close this in prayer.
- 11:14Dear God, thank you for meeting us in honestly familiar
- 11:20scripture that still challenges our hearts in a new way.
- 11:26Would you show us where we've settled for knowledge without
- 11:31wisdom or comfort without obedience?
- 11:36Would you teach us how to love you with every single part of
- 11:40our being, not just selectively, not halfway, but all of all of
- 11:46us? Let our lives be lived as
- 11:50worship God. Let it flow from reverence and
- 11:53respect and a deep love for you. Would you help us to reflect
- 11:59that love to all the people around us This week?
- 12:04We want to be set apart, holy, sanctified for you, Jesus.
- 12:10Would you continue shaping us? Father, mold us into the image
- 12:14of your Son Jesus. We pray this all in your name.
- 12:18Amen. OK, I hope you all have a great
- 12:22Monday, an awesome start to a new week and I will see y'all on
- 12:26the next episode.
