- 0:00SPEAKER_08: From the peaks of the smokies.
- 0:03SPEAKER_08: To the peaks of the Mississippi.
- 0:06SPEAKER_08: This is your home for the University of Tennessee.
- 0:26SPEAKER_08: Inside access, the kind of speed.
- 0:29SPEAKER_08: From Rocky Top, direct from the coaches.
- 0:32SPEAKER_08: Inside from the players, the inside track.
- 0:36SPEAKER_08: Mike Keith starts now.
- 0:41SPEAKER_10: So glad to have you with us for another edition of the Mike Keith Show, delivered by Uber Eats, right off the top of the program.
- 0:47SPEAKER_10: Joined by one of the gentlemen who will call the game this weekend on television, along with Dave Neal and actually Ashley Strohline, Cole Kubelik.
- 0:56SPEAKER_10: Great to see you, Cole.
- 0:57SPEAKER_10: Thanks for taking time with us.
- 1:00SPEAKER_07: Absolutely, Mike.
- 1:01SPEAKER_07: Great to be with you.
- 1:01SPEAKER_07: Looking forward to getting to Knoxville this weekend.
- 1:04SPEAKER_10: Tell me first and foremost, through two weeks, what have you learned about the entire Southeastern Conference that you did not know?
- 1:13SPEAKER_07: Probably first that these younger quarterbacks are going to be more successful than we thought.
- 1:17SPEAKER_07: We have a couple of guys that are first-year starters, a couple of guys that are first year in college football, that their poise, their demeanor, their handling of things has been way ahead of schedule, much further along than I would have ever imagined.
- 1:32SPEAKER_07: Also, too, I think that things might be a little bit tighter with maybe the middle of the pack than we thought.
- 1:38SPEAKER_07: I thought, a lot of people thought coming into the season that the middle of the SEC was going to be uber competitive.
- 1:44SPEAKER_07: And I don't think we know enough about Georgia yet.
- 1:47SPEAKER_07: We obviously have a pretty good litmus test on Texas.
- 1:49SPEAKER_07: Those were the teams that most of us had ahead of everyone else.
- 1:52SPEAKER_07: But you look at where Missouri is from a passing game perspective, Mississippi State and their quarterback situation.
- 1:58SPEAKER_07: I think some of the teams in the middle, I mean Florida, they got often this weekend, which will be tough, but they've been impressive so far.
- 2:04SPEAKER_07: So the middle of the SEC may actually be more competitive, Mike, than we thought it was going to be coming into the season.
- 2:10SPEAKER_10: Your thoughts on Tennessee through two games and what jumps out, Cole?
- 2:15SPEAKER_07: Really impressive.
- 2:16SPEAKER_07: Um, Faison Brandon has just been so calm, so deliberate.
- 2:20SPEAKER_07: He's been in full command of the offense.
- 2:22SPEAKER_07: And you just don't expect a freshman quarterback to be that.
- 2:27SPEAKER_07: And I understand there might be some Tennessee fans that want to see the ball down the field or in the air a little bit more, but you know, you call the game to win the game.
- 2:35SPEAKER_07: And I tried to tell people this about this Tennessee program two years ago when I knew the offseason was spent on finding different ways to be more physical and to run the football uh more effectively, more efficiently, specifically against defenses that they were getting a lot of.
- 2:49SPEAKER_07: They've worked that now for two consecutive offseasons in different ways.
- 2:53SPEAKER_07: And so they still want to be able to go ground and pound.
- 2:56SPEAKER_07: I think the offensive line's been great.
- 2:58SPEAKER_07: Unfortunately, the injury to Ethan Davis I hated to see because I thought the tight end group was helping a lot.
- 3:02SPEAKER_07: Um I we've known exactly what Deshaun Bishop was.
- 3:05SPEAKER_07: I haven't really been surprised by that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_07: I knew he was a good back, and I knew when he got his opportunity to be the guy, he was going to be special.
- 3:12SPEAKER_07: Mike Matthews has proven a lot to me on the perimeter.
- 3:14SPEAKER_07: And then I think too defensively, I think the defensive line just has more girth.
- 3:18SPEAKER_07: I think they're bigger and physical across the board.
- 3:21SPEAKER_07: We've seen a great rotation of D-tackles the last two years, but I don't feel like we've seen them be as big and as girthy all the way across that front.
- 3:30SPEAKER_07: That's that's probably the other thing that has stuck out to me so far about this Tennessee football team.
- 3:34SPEAKER_10: Cole Kubelik, have we seen much Jim Knowles' defensive scheme yet that you can tell?
- 3:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you've seen it be a little bit more aggressive at times.
- 3:44SPEAKER_07: Uh, I think the way that he uses the front to open some things up defensively has also shown up.
- 3:49SPEAKER_07: Um, I think a lot of people thought it was just gonna be this hyper-aggressive blitz, four or five people on every snap.
- 3:56SPEAKER_07: And it it doesn't have to be that.
- 3:57SPEAKER_07: Some of it can just be the presentation of it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_07: And that's what's gonna force defenses to or offenses to play you in a little bit of a different way.
- 4:04SPEAKER_07: So it's got his fingerprints on it, you can tell.
- 4:07SPEAKER_07: Uh, and I think it's been more responsible.
- 4:09SPEAKER_07: That's the main thing that I would say.
- 4:10SPEAKER_07: You know, I don't think the calls have been as emotional as maybe they have the last few years.
- 4:14SPEAKER_07: Um, it hasn't been as reactionary as maybe what I've seen in the past from a Tennessee defense the last few seasons.
- 4:20SPEAKER_07: So all of that, I think already you're seeing his fingerprints on it in a major way.
- 4:25SPEAKER_10: As you look at Tennessee's opponent for Saturday night and prepare for your telecast, tell us your thoughts, at least initially, on Kennesaw State.
- 4:34SPEAKER_07: Well, they got good skill.
- 4:35SPEAKER_07: You know, Ricky Collins, a quarterback that's been at Mississippi State, he's been at LSU.
- 4:39SPEAKER_07: He's he's been a guy that was at Syracuse.
- 4:41SPEAKER_07: He's he throws a beautiful deep ball and he's got a big, strong arm.
- 4:44SPEAKER_07: I think they have very capable backs.
- 4:46SPEAKER_07: It's a game, honestly, Mike, that Tennessee should win in the trenches.
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: Tennessee's offensive line should be able to control things up front.
- 4:53SPEAKER_07: Their defensive line should be able to be problematic.
- 4:56SPEAKER_07: But if you let the skill get loose, you could see some real headaches because you got a couple receivers that can go, two running backs, I know that can get it, one a little bit more physical than the other, but can find positive yards, a scheme that wants to try to get them the ball quickly in different ways.
- 5:13SPEAKER_07: Uh, gap scheme runs where they're blocking down, pulling around, something that Tennessee's gonna have to fit up properly uh along the defensive line and along the front seven.
- 5:22SPEAKER_07: So, absolutely some things that I think could be a headache for this football team.
- 5:26SPEAKER_07: But if they handle their business the way they've handled it the first two weeks, it's it's a game that the Tennessee should be comfortable in and should be able to run the things that they want to run and be able to dictate the terms of this game.
- 5:37SPEAKER_10: Finally, end with this, Cole Kubelik.
- 5:39SPEAKER_10: Vol player you are most interested to see in person this Saturday night at Nealand Stadium?
- 5:44SPEAKER_07: David Sanders.
- 5:46SPEAKER_07: He looks bigger and stronger than he did a year ago.
- 5:48SPEAKER_07: He looked very, not in a bad way, but very lean last year.
- 5:52SPEAKER_07: And you're kind of like, there are a couple times you saw him because he's so long at tackle, you're like, all right, is he gonna be able to hold up if somebody wants to turn speed to power on him?
- 6:01SPEAKER_07: Now he looks like he's got offensive tackle girth and excited to see him perform in person.
- 6:06SPEAKER_07: He's already made the block party on reading React a couple times this year.
- 6:09SPEAKER_07: So um he and Wendell Moe, I mean, there's a couple of them up front on that offensive line that I'm always gonna pick those guys first if they're fun to watch.
- 6:16SPEAKER_07: And Tennessee's got a couple that I enjoy watching.
- 6:18SPEAKER_10: Cole Kublik will call the game this Saturday night on SEC Network.
- 6:23SPEAKER_10: Thanks so much for your time.
- 6:24SPEAKER_10: We appreciate you.
- 6:25SPEAKER_07: I appreciate you guys having me.
- 6:26SPEAKER_07: Look forward to seeing you up there.
- 6:28SPEAKER_10: All right.
- 6:28SPEAKER_10: Up next is our conversation with Tennessee head coach Josh Hepel on the Mike Keith Show and our visits with Coach Heipel, always brought to you by Calhoun's, nine area locations in East Tennessee.
- 6:40SPEAKER_10: Calhoun's a taste of Tennessee.
- 6:44SPEAKER_10: Want to talk about offensive line to begin.
- 6:47SPEAKER_10: How did you feel like the offensive line played at Georgia Tech and has continued to work throughout the course of this week getting ready for Kennesaw?
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in general, uh pleased with uh with a majority of of what we've done.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Uh you rush for 300 yards, uh you don't take that for granted.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Um and that's not just the offensive line.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Tight ends are a huge are a huge part of uh of that success too.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: And obviously the running backs uh doing a great job with the ball in their hands.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: Uh there's some things that we can still be better at.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, a couple of communication things, um, you know, some of our double teams combinations working together.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, but all in all, uh feel good about what we've done.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Um, but want to see uh a lot of growth here uh early in the year.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: We should take another big step this uh this Saturday.
- 7:32SPEAKER_10: How is David Sanders sort of dropping in at left tackle right now in terms of his comfort level?
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh really natural.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, a majority of his career he's played at uh at left, uh dating back to high school.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Obviously, last year was at right, um, but uh extremely comfortable and uh has done a really good job.
- 7:50SPEAKER_10: I'd ask you about a couple other players.
- 7:52SPEAKER_10: Dewan Morris, with the way he played last week, certainly jumped out to a lot of people.
- 7:57SPEAKER_10: But there's been a lot of talk about his work in the offseason, his work in practice.
- 8:01SPEAKER_10: How much more confidence does the head coach have in Dewan Morris right now?
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: Uh a lot, but it starts with who he is, just uh his mental approach every single day, the consistency that he's had uh walking into the building.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and uh really proud of the growth of the person.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: That part lays itself into growth of the the football player, a much deeper understanding uh of our run schemes, of pass protections, assignment sound.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Uh Wednesday, you know, he's coaching helped guys on the offensive field.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Uh you can hear his voice in the background uh when he's not getting a rep, he's just uh way more attentive and and uh understanding of the details.
- 8:41SPEAKER_10: Later on this show, we'll have a chance to hear from sophomore wide receiver Rodarius Jackson out of Memphis.
- 8:46SPEAKER_10: Rodarius Jackson, three catches in each of the first two games.
- 8:50SPEAKER_10: Are you gaining more confidence in him in terms of what you hope to expect?
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, continuing to gain confidence in him.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, although we had great trust and confidence in him to begin with, he's getting better as a young football player.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, every snap that he gets out there, uh, he's done a great job here early part of the season.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: A young guy last year that was really coming on, uh, gets hurt in the uh the Georgia game, misses you know, five, six weeks, um, has continued to grow uh from that point, and somebody that we got a lot of trust in.
- 9:20SPEAKER_10: The majority of your pressure so far this year has come from the defensive line, the majority of sacks coming from defensive linemen.
- 9:28SPEAKER_10: Have they performed about how you would expect it, or maybe even a little bit better?
- 9:32SPEAKER_02: Um I I I think early on uh they've played to the level that we expected uh from them.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: Uh they're playing violent and they're playing disruptive.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Um some of our young guys, uh Marion Dye as an example, has continued to take uh really good steps here the early part of the season.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Um gonna need the depth there as you go through the year.
- 9:53SPEAKER_02: Uh we want to see our young guys take another big step here uh this week.
- 9:57SPEAKER_10: Overall, when you take a look at Kennesaw, they are a team started 0-2 last year playing some tough opponents and then go win their conference.
- 10:05SPEAKER_10: They they pulled everything together, got better as they went.
- 10:09SPEAKER_10: That's one of the things is you don't really know in this day and time about teams because oftentimes with all the transfer portal guys and everything, it takes time for a team to kind of figure out who it is.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're you're starting over every January, truly, and and good teams continue to get better throughout the course of the year.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: That's a challenge for us controlling the controllables, uh controllables, and I want to see us take a step.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Um they're a uh team in a program that's won, I think, 12 out of their last 14 games.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: Um it's a good football team.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, we need to show up uh with the competitive spirit that that you need to have to go win on a Saturday.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: We need to play smart football here uh this Saturday night.
- 10:48SPEAKER_10: Maybe uh this is an understatement, but it looks like head coach Jerry Mack prioritizes speed at virtually every position.
- 10:56SPEAKER_10: This is a team with guys that can run.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh their wide receivers are electric, uh they can push the ball vertically down the field.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Their quarterback uh is truly a a dual threat.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Um he's growing in the the understanding of their past game uh here the first couple of weeks.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Uh but when he tucks to the football and design quarterback run or scrambles, uh he's uh he's dangerous out on the perimeter.
- 11:16SPEAKER_10: If Tennessee is getting better from week two to week three, where will you improve Saturday night against Kennesaw State?
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Uh first thing is uh not hurting ourselves.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: Um foolish uh penalties.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Uh I want to see us play clean, play smart.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Um and then assignment and communication.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Uh defensively, we have to be able to handle their tempo, uh, get aligned, get our cleats in the ground, uh, offensively, recognize structures and uh play all 11 together.
- 11:42SPEAKER_10: Yeah, and defensively that's a challenge at Nealand Stadium sometimes because how loud the fan base gets on defense, and certainly going to be loud in there the next two Saturday, well, the next three Saturdays.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Well, uh we got a great home schedule, and uh I know our fans are gonna show up in a great way.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Uh we want them to be loud Saturday at night here and uh be a part of this football game for you.
- 12:00SPEAKER_10: Looking forward to it.
- 12:00SPEAKER_10: Thanks, Coach.
- 12:01SPEAKER_10: Josh Heippel with us, presented by Calhoun.
- 12:04SPEAKER_10: We're back with more of the Mike Keith Show right after this.
- 12:08SPEAKER_08: This is the Mike Keith Show.
- 12:10SPEAKER_08: Inside access, delivered by Uber Eats.
- 12:13SPEAKER_15: Today's show is sponsored by Pilot, official travel stop of the vault.
- 12:18SPEAKER_15: See you out here by First Horizon, the big bank muscle, small bank muscle, by Food City, the official supermarket of the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 12:28SPEAKER_15: The official healthcare provider of the vault.
- 12:31SPEAKER_15: Rackley Roofing, Led Out Victor Leaf, the proud official roofer of the big orange, by five euro insurance, the official insurance of the vault, Tennessee Internment for Tennessee Life.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: At Rackley Roofing, we are not a one-man team.
- 12:47SPEAKER_04: We're actually not a two-man team.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: Everyone is a critical part of the journey.
- 12:51SPEAKER_15: Championship teams are not built on one person.
- 12:54SPEAKER_15: Great companies aren't either.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Like the Vault, coaches and players need to learn to handle the pressure, including the pressure of success.
- 13:03SPEAKER_10: We invest in the next generation.
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: We invest in our community.
- 13:06SPEAKER_10: And most importantly, we invest in our employees.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Want to change the world?
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Change it one roof at a time.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Out of here.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: When you travel across the great state of Tennessee, one thing you're sure to find is big orange patching.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: You see it throughout every inch of the volunteer state, just like you see first horizon.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: Serving communities big and small.
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: Offering big bank products with small bank passion.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: What else do you need?
- 14:02SPEAKER_16: Big bank muscle.
- 14:03SPEAKER_16: Small bank hustle.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: That's first horizon, the official bank of the volume.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Probably serving Tennesseeans for over 160 years.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: Hello, and welcome to Ascoach Hyper.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Josh Hypo.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: Brent Rice.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Coach, know any good dad jokes.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Hey Brent, thanks for asking.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Why is grilling so great in Knoxville?
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Because the Vols always bring the hate.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: This has been Ask Coach Hypo, brought to you by Food City, the official tailgaming headquarters of the Vol.
- 14:44SPEAKER_12: Being at the Vols game saved my life.
- 14:46SPEAKER_12: It was a normal day going to the game with my son, but this time it felt like a sledgehammer hit my chest.
- 14:53SPEAKER_12: The UT Medical team knew exactly what they needed to do, and just kept me calm throughout the process.
- 15:00SPEAKER_12: It was probably the most serious heart attack that you could have.
- 15:03SPEAKER_12: The team took care of me, worked quickly, efficiently, and I did catch the end of the game.
- 15:10SPEAKER_16: These are the stories of the region's academic health system.
- 15:21SPEAKER_22: Sun is shining, it's a beautiful day.
- 15:26SPEAKER_22: Wake up, sleepy head, get up and play.
- 15:39SPEAKER_23: Make every day brighter with the sunny, southern goodness of Mayfield Dairy.
- 15:44SPEAKER_10: Saturdays are all about the big art.
- 15:46SPEAKER_10: From the roar of Neiland Stadium to the energy of the tailgate, one thing belongs to every game day menu.
- 15:53SPEAKER_10: Calhoun.
- 15:54SPEAKER_10: Whether you're dining in one of Calhoun's nine-area restaurant locations, taking the feast to your tailgate, or grabbing a bike from one of Calhoun's locations inside Nealand Stadium, Calhoun's makes it easy so you can focus on curing the balls to victory.
- 16:10SPEAKER_10: Calhoun, a taste of dynasty.
- 16:26SPEAKER_10: Part of our Vol Network team and with our Vol Network affiliate, the sports animal in Knoxville, does a show every day from noon until three.
- 16:36SPEAKER_10: Got you a proper buildup.
- 16:37SPEAKER_10: Thank you, sir.
- 16:38SPEAKER_10: Welcome.
- 16:38SPEAKER_10: It's good to see you.
- 16:40SPEAKER_10: Remind you that his visit comes courtesy to us of the heavy lift by our friends at Planet Fitness.
- 16:47SPEAKER_10: All right.
- 16:47SPEAKER_10: Heavy lift this week for the Vols, Kennesaw State, coming off a road game at Georgia Tech.
- 16:55SPEAKER_10: You know who's sitting there next week.
- 16:57SPEAKER_10: Everybody in the world does.
- 16:59SPEAKER_10: As a player, how has this week been in terms of trying to get the focus on what's to go on Saturday night at Nealand?
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be difficult for some players, right?
- 17:09SPEAKER_05: Because as a young player, you're gonna look forward.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's human nature, but you have to focus in on fixing the mistakes from Georgia Tech and making sure you go out against Kansas State and perform better than you did last week.
- 17:23SPEAKER_05: And there's plenty of opportunities to look at the film, make some corrections.
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: I thought uh we played you know very well at times against Georgia Tech.
- 17:30SPEAKER_05: It was an awesome challenge.
- 17:31SPEAKER_05: You know, you had some adversity even before you got to Atlanta and you were able to overcome that.
- 17:35SPEAKER_05: Um Georgia Tech, you know, punched you in the mouth, and then you punched right back, and it was it was a heavyweight bout, uh, a lot of that game.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: But this is gonna be a new challenge.
- 17:43SPEAKER_05: You're playing at home, you're playing at night, and um you know who's around the corner next week.
- 17:48SPEAKER_10: You maxed and exceeded Georgia Tech's physicality, which was probably the best thing to come out of the game, other than the victory, is you saw what you did in the offseason could pay off.
- 18:01SPEAKER_10: When you go back and you watch that tape, there's a lot of hitting in that game, and Tennessee did a lot of hitting.
- 18:09SPEAKER_10: How do you keep that up?
- 18:12SPEAKER_10: How do you keep that momentum up?
- 18:14SPEAKER_10: Understanding that if the 2026 balls with a freshman quarterback are going to be successful, that's who they're gonna have to be.
- 18:22SPEAKER_05: You can't stray away from you know what you want to be and the things that you did to get here.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: You can't stray away from that.
- 18:29SPEAKER_05: And that can be difficult because you got some guys that are beat up, so you have to do a good job of of managing them, taking care of them, but also maintaining the physicality that you know you need to move forward and compete in this league at a very, very high level.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: And so uh this week is will be interesting, you know.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: How do you take care of your guys?
- 18:45SPEAKER_05: How do you make sure that you come out against Kennesaw State and that level of physicality does not drop off one bit?
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: The run game.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 18:53SPEAKER_05: Oh that was fun.
- 18:54SPEAKER_05: It was fun.
- 18:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 18:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, running against, you know, seven or eight guys in a box and still having success, um, staying committed to it.
- 19:02SPEAKER_05: So, you know, sometimes when you don't have the success that you want, um, you can, you know, go to the passing game.
- 19:07SPEAKER_05: And you know, Josh Heichel is a quarterback at heart.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: And I know he wants to, you know, spin that ball and get guys open on the outside, but the Avengers were on the inside.
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: And, you know, Deshaun Bishop was great, his patience, his vision.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Dwayne Dawan Morris was was awesome as well.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then Gordon doing his thing in between the tackles and falling forward.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, I thought our running game was awesome, 300 yards passing, but I love the commitment to the running game.
- 19:33SPEAKER_10: When you start to talk about physicality, run game, this is who we are.
- 19:39SPEAKER_10: How hard is it to get the full belief in that?
- 19:42SPEAKER_10: Or I guess better said, how long does it take until everybody gets the full belief in that in their heart that that's who we are and this is what we're gonna go do?
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: Well, I think I think that's something you preach day one.
- 19:53SPEAKER_05: I think after game two, everyone has a strong understanding.
- 19:57SPEAKER_05: And you know, the more success you have, I think the stronger the belief level is, and then the stronger the relief level is, the more action that you put into um, you know, cleaning up the the uh details and then doing more.
- 20:09SPEAKER_10: I'm wondering how much longer does it take before play action becomes a bigger part of your repertoire based on how much people have to respect your run gang?
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: I think it's coming.
- 20:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I think there's more opportunities to throw the ball on the outside.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: Radarius Jackson did a really good job man-to-man coverage, a sitting corner that was off attack technique, release uh upfield, did a great job adjusting and catching the football.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: There's gonna be more opportunities like that.
- 20:34SPEAKER_10: You were highly complimentary of Braylon Staley on his touchdown catch.
- 20:39SPEAKER_10: What did he do well from the start of that play into the route, into making the catch and the 20-yard score?
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the the out and up off of uh motion, and you know, you could tell it was zone coverage because no one really went with him.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: I feel like Georgia Tech tried to go man and kind of bump it.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: Um, but Faison did a really good job.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: There was a free you know blitzer coming.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: And um, he didn't throw off his back foot.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: He stepped into his throw and made a really good throw.
- 21:06SPEAKER_05: A throw that allowed Brennan Staley to make the catch and get one foot in uh right there in the corner of the end zone.
- 21:12SPEAKER_10: How do you understand that landmark of what you have to do while you're backing up into the front corner of the end zone?
- 21:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's your peripheral vision.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's understanding kind of where you are and getting the feel and and knowing that you really only need one foot in in college.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: So, you know, putting your eyes on a ball, catching it, and then dragging that foot and getting it in.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: And uh Stalin did a really good job of that.
- 21:34SPEAKER_10: I want to go back to Radarius Jackson for just a second.
- 21:36SPEAKER_10: Three catches in each of the first two games.
- 21:38SPEAKER_10: What are you seeing from the sophomore from Memphis?
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: The technique is good.
- 21:42SPEAKER_05: I mean, on his on his long catch.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: Um, and that's a really good corner with a lot of athleticism.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: I mean, he was a five star coming out of high school, transferred from Alabama, and so he was sitting.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: The reason why he was sitting because he didn't really respect Rodarius's speed.
- 21:58SPEAKER_05: And that's what happens when you maybe have a faster corner go up against a receiver that maybe that corner feels like he's faster than so he can he can he thinks he can sit and and catch.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: And Radares did a really good job of releasing down the football field and uh getting vertical and still catching the football.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: And it's up to Radares to make sure that when the play comes his way to make it.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: So that way we can continue to be in three receiver sets.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: You love 12 personnel, but if you're Radares Jackson, you want more opportunities too.
- 22:27SPEAKER_10: 12 personnel is something we've seen a lot from from the ball so far.
- 22:31SPEAKER_10: The two tight end look is something Josh Hypo loves to balance out of defense.
- 22:36SPEAKER_10: Why is Tennessee having success with two tight ends in the game as much as they are?
- 22:41SPEAKER_05: I think it keeps the defense in off balance because we can pass out of it because of Ethan's athleticism.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: How much does the 12th personnel the two tight end look help phase unbranded?
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: I think it helps him simply because you can run the football.
- 22:59SPEAKER_05: I mean when you spread guys out I think it's easier sometimes for the defense to disguise coverages and sometimes as a young quarterback you don't know who's coming, who's going.
- 23:11SPEAKER_05: Um but I think it allows Hypel to to simplify things for him and make the throws shorter for him.
- 23:18SPEAKER_05: We saw a lot of condensed um alignment from the receivers and so on some outbreak and cuts.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: I just think I think it makes the throws easier for him.
- 23:26SPEAKER_05: What do you want to see out of Tennessee Saturday night against Kennesaw State?
- 23:30SPEAKER_05: I want to see us clean up the penalties.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: I mean just the the you know after the whistle you know decisions that you make when you're super emotional and you you want to let the guy know you beat him, you don't have to let him know.
- 23:41SPEAKER_05: He he knows I think I think clean those things up I think hyper will feel really good about going into the Texas game.
- 23:47SPEAKER_05: I love our physicality I love how we uh overcame some adversity uh you just gotta fix those things.
- 23:54SPEAKER_05: I mean you you never want to have over 140 yards at the penalty so I think that's gonna be a point of emphasis this week.
- 24:00SPEAKER_10: Heavy lip for the balls brought to you by Planet Fitness and the black card.

- 25:14SPEAKER_10: That's the question we took David Sanders to Food City in Alcoa to see just how he would be working up front with me learning a new technique bagging those groceries watch this David did you ever have like a summer job um no sir I never had a summer job you probably couldn't could you yeah I had summer workouts with high school football and stuff okay so you've never worked in a grocery store no sir I bag groceries for two summers okay so I'm still an expert at so I'm I'll be paying attention to either well I'm going to help now Jeremy who is the assistant head cashier he may have advice too but you're gonna prove to be coachable I hope.
- 26:02SPEAKER_10: Yes sir okay they're gonna open it up aisle five here at Food City in Alcoa is open we're ready you think anybody will come down here I hope so attention food city shoppers aisle five is open with bagging bagging available aisle five if you'd like to check it out thank you and have a great day go balls this is great you've got to bag things together in how you'll put them away so like if I'm not good at like getting home and put it like when I go to the grocery store I just throw everything in the bag and then when I get home I just figure it out.
- 26:59SPEAKER_10: Now you're gonna but this is gonna be important because what we're gonna do is like if we get frozen things right we're gonna put them all in one bag.
- 27:06SPEAKER_10: So when you're ready to put your groceries away you open the freezer and everything goes in.
- 27:11SPEAKER_11: I guess there's a there's a one thing I do know like you don't put the food with like the stuff you clean.
- 27:16SPEAKER_11: No you don't put the food with the stuff you clean yeah that's like the foods I I just put it all together I don't really mind.
- 27:22SPEAKER_10: Well that's because you're 312 pounds so you could just grab whatever that is true.
- 27:28SPEAKER_10: They're trying to talk people into coming down here with nobody will even come down here.
- 27:32SPEAKER_10: I don't think they really believe we are able to buy okay here we go you definitely got one okay this is it's gonna be small cookie dough all right so all this can go together there are no problems in here that's a tricky one would you like to keep that out okay so no they wouldn't want to keep it out so you've you've done a lovely job.
- 27:55SPEAKER_10: Yes sir he's off to a great start thank you if this tackle thing doesn't work out I think you're a natural you know you want David to sign that for you that you're gonna he's like one this is extra service you know when I was a kid they would write your cart number on the back of the receipt and then they they would people would pull around up front and they would put your card in for you put your food in for you that was last century yeah take the carts to the cars no there was a little door don't make a joke there was a little door and you would push the buggy out and then you would stand there would be somebody standing outside you'd pull your car around you'd say I have number 124 pull the card over and put it in the backseat of the car for people.
- 28:40SPEAKER_10: It's sometimes you'd gotta think of yep you know what we made for that was that$3.65 an hour.
- 28:49SPEAKER_10: That's pretty good.
- 28:50SPEAKER_10: You think so?
- 28:52SPEAKER_10: How's it going?
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: You want those bags or um no but the medicine can go in the bag.
- 28:59SPEAKER_10: Medicine can go in the bag yeah oh you got a cough sore throat eh I know that's right I hate that I would tell you what I use for sore throat but I don't think it might be applicable.

- 29:48SPEAKER_11: Yeah bishop that's a good number he's a great guy love bishop how do you not love bishop right?
- 29:52SPEAKER_11: Yeah you can't well well bishop will get older during the workouts to the point where he makes you want to blow on them.
- 29:59SPEAKER_10: Seriously stuff in your dish nah nah but they'll just stand there and talk to you be like buy your hands and your hips buy your hands and your hips all right much bigger order this time muscle milk shake yeah I think you're good I think we're good with that I like the protein shake I think you can go there I'm gonna go here with the happy buttons what I'm gonna do those on top and I'm gonna do this here I can take this you can take the Pringles uh I got that and I got that now see look at this there you go look at the even how about this we did congratulations sir you've got what I learned back in the day like the double bag the double bag let's see that that hurts our profits here we don't want we don't really that's true yeah but we got cleaning supplies so I'm gonna let you take that you can take one of the gains I'll take the other game uh I'm gonna take that so we're pretty even take this one take that one look at this look at the speed all good you haven't even checked out yet gotta be a world look at David Sanders here there you go how's that quick enough I don't want to get hit by this you don't want to get hit by that guy you're 100% correct that would be very would be very bad we got some muffins we got muffins we got pie no chicken tenders yeah that works there's nothing wrong with that I'm a quick learner I feel like I've clearly a quick learner the other thing too is a lot of people bag stuff too heavy that's true and then the bag breaks that's real the paper bags used to break like crazy back in the 80s well actually so like my family's from Buffalo New York so I used to go up there a lot during the summers with my grandparents and they have paper bags up there.
- 31:51SPEAKER_11: Is that right?
- 31:51SPEAKER_11: Yeah so I used to you already have the carrier for the model all right what are you so what are you shooting we're shooting for a TV show.

- 32:15SPEAKER_10: How many bags are you taking you taking those for home?

- 37:55SPEAKER_10: Together we grow together we thrive Farm Bureau Health Plans plan on us welcome you back to the Bike Keith Show delivered by Uber Eats this is Rodarius Jackson wide receiver from the Tennessee Volunteers he has three catches in each of the first two games how are you I'm doing great how about you I'm fine thank you I remember meeting you at the 2023 Mr Football award and I knew you were gonna win because when I read your bio for what you did that year.
- 38:31SPEAKER_10: And remember Mr Football is just a regular season award so this is 10 games 2023 season you ran for nearly 800 yards with nine touchdowns and averaged 12 yards a carry.
- 38:48SPEAKER_10: You caught 30 passes for 696 yards 23 yards a catch and 13 touchdowns over 40% of your catches went for touchdowns.
- 39:00SPEAKER_10: You passed for 340 yards and seven touchdowns you recorded 63 tackles on defense eight interceptions returned two for touchdowns and returned a punt for a touchdown but I want to ask you about that from a couple of different perspectives So you play quarterback at some point?
- 39:28SPEAKER_18: Running back whatever they need whatever Sheffield needed whatever they needed me to be great at and defensively yes sir I played safety I can go at D B I could go at Nokia pretty much were you recruited as a defensive back at all?
- 39:44SPEAKER_10: Not at all.
- 39:45SPEAKER_10: Okay not at all receiver all right but the thing was because of what your high school needed you to do you were not like the full time wide receiver who was doing that all the time in practice you had to be practicing other things too right everything so what you're doing now at Tennessee concentrating on playing wide receiver this is your first time to do this on a full time basis.
- 40:11SPEAKER_18: Yes sir I really like like coming out of Sheffield like I didn't I would say I ain't had a proper RC recoach into like really like know how to get in out of rouse or like go break down or make a move like so when I was able to get here like strictly tone into that position like like I say to grow shows.
- 40:34SPEAKER_10: So you're just starting this process that's exciting and when you feel yourself make this sort of progress how much confidence do you gain sort of moment by moment as this occurs?
- 40:49SPEAKER_18: I mean it just it just builds the confidence up I mean if you're able to separate and make light plays and hard times you're able to break down to get in and out of route as quick as you can.
- 41:01SPEAKER_10: I mean it just build up the confidence and then with the quarterback it just build his trust to get you the ball even more Tennessee has a tremendous history in Memphis with players coming and and being part of the volunteer football team.
- 41:13SPEAKER_18: Why did you decide to continue that even though Memphis is obviously not close to Knoxville I say um one Tennessee was a dream school growing up I used to love Tennessee and foot two like just not touchdown on campus like the brother like the coaches like I don't think I can see myself anywhere else like I dunno so big of a ball with these players and these coaches like my second family Kelsey Pope is your position coach he is not easy on you at all he stays on you quite a bit um what's it like?
- 41:52SPEAKER_18: I mean it's tough but it's also great I mean you will want somebody like Daniel here to keep you going I mean it ain't the hard as gang you know yeah and you know gang coach double maybe what you not what you don't think is right.
- 42:09SPEAKER_10: I mean so I just every time you talk critiques and try to tell me what you know I try to listen the best I can, you know, apply that to my game the consistency first two games, three catches in each game just feeling that sort of consistency.
- 42:26SPEAKER_10: Do you sense your game is coming together in a way that you're starting to feel all the pieces come together?
- 42:34SPEAKER_18: Yeah I say so I say I just aren't all feel comfortable in the feel you know just darn um getting the feel for the game though just darn a like trying to get the game to slow down more to my speed.
- 42:48SPEAKER_18: How much do Braylon Staley and Mike Matthews help with that those are the two great leaders those are like my dogs, my bros like like and that's another thing like the Rosey room like they bought right there like I wanna want it nowhere else.
- 43:06SPEAKER_18: Honestly with them two guys I mean they two older guys who both have big gracies of leisure I mean so is not another day to say that I wouldn't listen to because they didn't seen it and been through what would you like to take from Mike Matthews game to Radarius Jackson's game I say Mike Matthews as his be his way to Saber on Rowran he's a grey Rowran and I don't think people pay attention to that you know just as a way to take the ball what would you like to take from Braylon Staley's game and put in Radarius Jackson's game just be a little brisky tease real quick.
- 43:47SPEAKER_10: I say just be You ran track yourself, hmm now I mean they're a couple of fast guys are you approaching them in terms of speed or mang I say I'd PR
- 44:00SPEAKER_18: Um my best.
- 44:01SPEAKER_18: Um like a twenty one um like a twenty-one seven.
- 44:07SPEAKER_18: That's pretty good.
- 44:08SPEAKER_18: So yeah, I think I'm getting pretty faster, you know.
- 44:11SPEAKER_18: Trying to get in the twenty-two club.
- 44:15SPEAKER_10: What do you feel like you can add to this offense and to the receiver core for the rest of 2026?
- 44:22SPEAKER_18: I mean, just you know, I say my little details, my um my yards out to the catch, you know, stuff like that.
- 44:32SPEAKER_18: You know, just the little details to like, you know, add my value to the team.
- 44:37SPEAKER_10: So going into Kennesaw State Saturday night.
- 44:40SPEAKER_10: What are you hoping to build from the first two games into this third game coming up?
- 44:45SPEAKER_10: I mean against the owls.
- 44:47SPEAKER_18: I say just watching the film, you know, paying attention to the details that nobody ain't watching, you know, just critiquing myself so I can continue to add my value to the team.
- 44:56SPEAKER_10: Mr.
- 44:56SPEAKER_10: Football 2023?
- 44:58SPEAKER_10: Yes, sir.
- 44:58SPEAKER_10: Rodarius Jackson.
- 44:59SPEAKER_10: Ra rah.
- 45:00SPEAKER_10: Do you prefer rah-rah?
- 45:01SPEAKER_18: Yes, sir.
- 45:02SPEAKER_18: You can call me anything.
- 45:03SPEAKER_18: Okay, Roderis are Rara cool.
- 45:04SPEAKER_18: All right.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: It's time for this week in Big Orange Country, presented by Visit Knoxville.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: Tennessee is back on Rocky Top this weekend to welcome Kennesaw State to Nealand Stadium Saturday night for Tennessee's annual salute to service game.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: The kickoff is set for 7.45 Eastern time with the matchup airing on SEC Network.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: Tennessee men's tennis opens up its fall slate right here in Knoxville.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: The Valls host the Rocky Top invitational Friday through Sunday at Good Friend Tennis Center, giving ball fans three days of tennis action on Rocky Top.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: That was a look at this week in Big Orange Country presented by Visit Knoxville.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: Plan your trip at VisitKnoxville.com.
- 45:47SPEAKER_08: Getting you ready for the game, the Mike Keith Show, delivered on Uber 8.
- 45:52SPEAKER_08: This is your Ball Network.
- 45:59SPEAKER_10: Time for the Built Ford Tough Report with Brent Hubbs of VallQuest.com and the Ball Radio Network.
- 46:05SPEAKER_10: We are looking forward to two days from now, Tennessee and Kennesaw State.
- 46:10SPEAKER_10: Kickoff is set for 745.
- 46:13SPEAKER_10: It'll probably be more like 755.
- 46:16SPEAKER_10: Just to give you a little bit of a hint.
- 46:18SPEAKER_10: Brent, Jerry Mack is the head coach at Kennesaw State.
- 46:22SPEAKER_10: He left Tennessee to become the head coach at Kennesaw State.
- 46:25SPEAKER_10: Tell us about what you knew about him as a Vol assistant and why you think he's been successful so far as a head coach.
- 46:33SPEAKER_19: One of the more level-headed human beings you'll ever be around.
- 46:36SPEAKER_19: Very analytical in his thought process, not overly emotional, doesn't get too high, doesn't get too low, sees big picture.
- 46:45SPEAKER_19: When he came to Tennessee, he had been the offensive coordinator at Rice, and he took that job hoping as a stepping stone because he left a head coaching job over at North Carolina AT.
- 46:56SPEAKER_19: So he had head coaching experience when he got to Tennessee.
- 47:00SPEAKER_19: Certainly not at the Tennessee level or at you know at a bigger level, but he had managed a locker room.
- 47:06SPEAKER_19: He had managed all the little things that you have to do and understanding sort of big picture thing, and wasn't really just tunnel vision into his position.
- 47:16SPEAKER_19: And I think his knowledge and ability to see big picture helped that staff here at Tennessee get, you know, kind of get acclimated.
- 47:23SPEAKER_19: He was the last offensive staff hire that Josh Heipel made when he initially got the job because you just weren't sure where he was going to go and ends up with a guy with some experience.
- 47:33SPEAKER_19: And I think it helped the staff here that to understand it's okay, we're playing the long game here.
- 47:39SPEAKER_19: And I think he's brought that same mentality to Kennesaw State.
- 47:42SPEAKER_19: They obviously won out of the gate, managed that roster well, created an identity really quickly.
- 47:47SPEAKER_19: But I just think it's his, I hate the word professionalism, I just think it's his demeanor and understanding big pitcher that makes him an effective coach.
- 47:55SPEAKER_10: They opened the season with an easy win over West Georgia, and then they lost to Georgia State.
- 48:01SPEAKER_10: So Kennesaw comes into Knoxville one and one.
- 48:04SPEAKER_10: What do you know about the 2026 owls that you can share?
- 48:08SPEAKER_19: Yeah, I think that they're still trying to figure out what they are offensively.
- 48:11SPEAKER_19: Ricky Collins is their quarterback.
- 48:13SPEAKER_19: Ricky Collins is a journeyman quarterback.
- 48:15SPEAKER_19: He was at LSU, he was at Syracuse, now he's at Kennesaw State.
- 48:20SPEAKER_19: They're replacing a playmaker at quarterback from a year ago.
- 48:23SPEAKER_19: Their best weapon for them last year was their quarterback.
- 48:27SPEAKER_19: Um he was a guy that erased a lot of negative plays because they couldn't protect well up front against some teams, but he could turn what looked like a sack into an 18-yard gain, and he just was kind of playing some backyard ball.
- 48:39SPEAKER_19: And there was Jerry Mack was kind of like, he's our best weapon, let's use him and let him go.
- 48:44SPEAKER_19: I think they're still trying to find themselves offensively, because that's not really Ricky Collins' game.
- 48:49SPEAKER_19: So they're trying to be a little more, I think, of a passing team, a little more traditional.
- 48:54SPEAKER_19: Um, and I think it's a feeling out process with where they are right now.
- 48:58SPEAKER_19: That's a hard level to be at because if you get good players there and you hit on a player and that player becomes something, keeping him out of the transfer portal is really, really hard.
- 49:08SPEAKER_19: It's a very transactional level of football.
- 49:11SPEAKER_10: But one of the challenges if you're Tennessee, and they have a bunch of transfers too, at 20 transfers, is things will begin to click at a certain point.
- 49:21SPEAKER_10: And that's what you fear about Kennesaw this week is that they will begin to click a little bit more, knowing that their football team is still quite new.
- 49:32SPEAKER_19: And and they're athletic.
- 49:33SPEAKER_19: I mean, it's they have good athletes running around.
- 49:36SPEAKER_19: I mean, that they have some some weapons and some skill.
- 49:39SPEAKER_19: And you're right.
- 49:40SPEAKER_19: The question is, when's it going to click?
- 49:42SPEAKER_19: And we see things click.
- 49:44SPEAKER_19: Last year, it did not click immediately for Kennesaw State, but you looked at them three weeks into the season, a month in the season, and man, you could see here they come.
- 49:51SPEAKER_19: And then by the time you got to October, that was a really they were a really good football team at that level going on and winning their conference.
- 49:58SPEAKER_19: So you're right.
- 49:59SPEAKER_19: I mean, when does it click?
- 50:01SPEAKER_19: If you're Tennessee, you don't want to allow anything to click this week.
- 50:04SPEAKER_19: And I think you got to get off to a good start.
- 50:06SPEAKER_19: I think you got to be able to play some pocket contain and understand you're gonna see some RPO stuff, you're gonna see some quick slants, some things out of their hands quickly.
- 50:15SPEAKER_19: How does this secondary respond this week with that?
- 50:18SPEAKER_19: Do they press up a little bit more, trust in the defensive front?
- 50:21SPEAKER_19: How do they play really at the second level of the passing game this week after getting exposed to that more in week two?
- 50:29SPEAKER_19: Because Anthony Poindexter didn't have a film study after week one.
- 50:32SPEAKER_19: He's got to a film study after week two.
- 50:35SPEAKER_19: So now how does that secondary really what kind of jump do they make from their version of week one to week two, which is Georgia Tech now to Kennesaw?
- 50:43SPEAKER_10: Speaking of uh the Built Ford Tough report, biggest area of improvement you need to see from Tennessee in this ballgame Saturday night?
- 50:50SPEAKER_19: Just the discipline.
- 50:52SPEAKER_19: You can't have 14 penalties for 146 yards, or you just can't do that.
- 50:56SPEAKER_19: You're not gonna beat people that count if that's what you do.
- 50:59SPEAKER_19: So you've got to clean that part of it up.
- 51:01SPEAKER_19: You've got to you've got to play a cleaner brand of football.
- 51:03SPEAKER_19: I think you you have that cannot become a thing.
- 51:07SPEAKER_19: Um penalties are gonna happen.
- 51:09SPEAKER_19: When you play the way you play, they're gonna happen.
- 51:11SPEAKER_19: I don't even the the Tim Merritt stuff in the fourth quarter doesn't even bother me, but it's the it's the unsportsman-like penalties.
- 51:17SPEAKER_19: It's the self-inflicted wounds.
- 51:19SPEAKER_19: They have got to eliminate those.
- 51:21SPEAKER_19: They have to clean up that kind of stuff.
- 51:24SPEAKER_19: You gotta be cleaner in special teams.
- 51:25SPEAKER_19: Can't allow a punt block.
- 51:27SPEAKER_19: You gotta field a punt.
- 51:28SPEAKER_19: You can't have the unsportsman-like penalties that take you from, you know, first and ten to first and twenty-five, or allows the defense to have to stay on the field because they've done something that would have gotten them off the field, but they can't because they've committed a penalty there.
- 51:41SPEAKER_19: So I just think they've got to play cleaner this week.
- 51:43SPEAKER_19: That's what I'm looking for.
- 51:44SPEAKER_10: We're looking forward to this one.
- 51:45SPEAKER_10: Brent Hubbs, thanks for the time.
