- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yanis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My guest today is written for the TV shows Speechless and Friends from College, as well as McSweeney's and the New Yorker, Broti Govta.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: How are you doing today?
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: How are you?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I'm good, thanks.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I'm in the process of moving apartment and like so I'm just dressing out over that, but yeah.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: So where in the UK are you?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I'm in London.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: The big city.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: The big city, yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: So You're in California, are you?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm in Los Angeles.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: I was actually born in the UK.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was born in Devon.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Is it pronounced Torque?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Torque, yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's where I was born.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Is that by Devon?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, don't ask me about geography.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Geography is like the weakest thing for me.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: So when when did you move from there?
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Um, I was a baby.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: I don't remember anything about it.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: But we moved to we moved from there to um Scotland, actually.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: We were in Edinburgh.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: And then from there, Chicago.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: And I was like, this was before I was one.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: So no idea.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you don't remember any of it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Have you been back since?
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Um, I went back like 15 years ago.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Um, and yeah, it was great.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I felt I it was I didn't feel a connection.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't imagine you did.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: You know, I was a baby.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: But my parents did, and I and we had to take, I was like in seventh grade at the time.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: So it was 14 years.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but my parents made me take like a bunch of pictures with them outside like the maternity ward where I was born, and I was like, this sucks.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: I look so upset at them in like every single photo.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do know.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: I don't remember, yeah.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: I don't remember being upset about it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: I had a great time.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Oh we were in London for a bit, and then we were yeah, and then we were down in I think Torquay is maybe part of Devon.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: But we were down there for quite a bit, and I loved it.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: But the pictures tell a different story.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But also you're a teenager, so you have to like pose miserably in every photo.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: There's like, I mean, no baby knows how to smile in a picture, and the same applies to a preteens.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And then you move to California, you moved to LA and now you're thrilled to be there.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Except for right now, I guess.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Except for right now.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: No one's thrilled to be anywhere.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Although, how's it going?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: How's it going there?
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I think about the same.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Is it as disastrous?
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're not really they've done kind of like similar things to what you what you guys have done, which is nothing, and then just hoping it goes away.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Just all the wrong things.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And I so I think we're like sec like right behind you in terms of like cases and everything.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, yikes.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's the situation at the moment.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: How far are we fallen?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: So um the the movie you picked today.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: You picked the Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Um, what is your history with this movie?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: My history with the movie is that I saw it when I was, let's see, when when did it come out?
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: It came out in like 2003, 2004, something like that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 2005.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Um loved it so much.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: I was like 10 or something.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: And like the thing that really uh that I constantly thought about was like the princess sleepover scenes.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I was like, that is the perfect sleepover.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Um and it was like, and for all of us, you know, young girls that watched it, like that scene really uh stayed with us forever because we were like, we, you know, we're constantly having sleepovers, and you always aspire to the perfect sleepover, and then you see it in front of you.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so that was like my truly it's like a five-minute scene that was like, this is an amazing movie.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: What is it about this the sleepover specifically?
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Is it just the it just looks really fun or is it looks really fun?
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: Julie Andrews is singing.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, the mattress slide is amazing.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: You know, they're all on mattresses and they're sliding down the stairs or you know, they're sliding down yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they got like a big slide in the middle of the staircase.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's it's amazing.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: It's it's film.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And Raven is there.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Raven is singing uh um Raven Simone is uh singing a duet with the great Julie Andrews.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Which I read that when she found out she was going to do that, she cried.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I read that too.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Um because yeah, you would cry out of both fear and excitement.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I was really surprised to hear Julie Andrews sing in this movie.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I wasn't expecting it.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: It's it's really something she's amazing.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And uh so how many times do you think you've seen it at this point?
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: At this point I've probably seen it like four or five times.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: That's interesting because like usually when usually around the time when you're that a like usually around that age, you just like watch one of those films non-stop over and over and over again.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: You know, I did that actually with other Julie Andrews movies when I was much younger.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I every single day I watched all of Mary Poppins.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: It was every single day.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Like my parents to this day haven't memorized because they've had to watch it with me.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: They watched it like every single day for several months when I was like three or something.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: So you are huge I guess you're a huge Julie Andrews fan then.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Huge Julie Andrews fan.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Huge Julie Andrews fan.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Life goal is to meet her.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Uh I will settle for just watching movies.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And not even to be a good one.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: You could probably be with one day.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: I reckon you can meet her.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: You're in that scene.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: You could get around, you could find yourself.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm in I'm in I'm in her like I I'm in her uh circle.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: I'm in her immediate circle.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Um what was I gonna say?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: You yeah, you would so you were about 10 years old when you first saw it.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Uh when did you first see the original one?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Was it around the same time?
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Or or was it?
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: I saw that in theaters.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: I think that came out in like 2000, I want to say.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, about that.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: 2000, 2001, something like that.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: I saw it in theaters, and I remember I was very young, and I remember the two thoughts that I had because it starts out with the credits, um, with like the cast list and everything.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: And I truly remember the two thoughts I have I had when I saw that like credits list, because they're like very bizarre thoughts for a six-year-old to have, which was my first thought was like, Oh good, Julie Andrews is in this movie, I'm gonna love it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And then my second thought was, Wow, Whitney Houston produced this.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: Like a like a surprise, like a six-year-old doesn't think about what producers are.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: And I remember literally saying to my mom, oh Whitney Houston produced this, okay.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: And knowing Whitney Houston, yeah, and so as though I had an opinion about that.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: You're already like judging the the behind-the-scenes stuff at six years old.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was like, Oh, oh good, a Gary Marshall film.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: This ought to be good.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, produced by Whitney Houston, okay.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: And uh is the first one written by Shonda Rhimes as well, or is it just this one?
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not sure.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Is the first one written by Shonda Rhymes?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Because I I was really surprised to see her name on this.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: So she only came around for the second one.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: And she and uh like thinking about it, she would have been this is around the time of like crossroads as well.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So she comes straight off crossroads, I guess.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: So then I'm gonna go.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: Come hot off of that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: That's a that was Britney Spears and who else?
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Uh oh, um Zoe Saldana.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, incredible.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Justin Long.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Wow, an incredible cast.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: It's a bizarre cast.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Let's see a reunion.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, we need a reunion, especially now.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: All those people are still doing that.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Dan Afroid was in that.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Kim Control, that makes sense.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: That checks out.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Have you seen it?
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen it.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I remember I got it uh for I got like a a VHS uh tape of it for like my eighth birthday, maybe.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: And my mom said, You're not gonna watch this.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: For what was it just too explicit?
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: I guess I mean I think my mom was just like, I don't know, this doesn't seem right.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: And it was it's kind of funny because like my parents were really inconsistent about that.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: Like they were they they generally let me watch everything.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Um uh so they were they were kind of just you know, they were they just at random, they would decide.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: I'd be like anything where it's like it looks like teens are having fun is probably a no-go.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: But Ben Hur you should watch.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Like you you need to educate yourself and not have not see teens having fun.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because they were I mean, probably rightfully like teens are having fun because they're drinking, which is fun as hell, but um Ben Her is not having fun.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I think I can't remember, but I I think in Crossroads there's some like implication of a sex scene.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: So maybe that's I can't imagine that my parents watched Crossroads to vet it.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe not.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: But this movie it's oh no, go on.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, I was just gonna say I think that that was just an arbitrary decision on their end.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, possibly.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Like they like probably just like seeing Britney Spears around the time and just thinking, like, no, you're not seeing a movie with her.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, probably.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: But yeah, this movie itself is a G rating.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Fantastic.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Which you don't it's not usual for a for uh like a live action movie to get a G rating.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: No, that's incredible, incredible stuff.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: But uh yeah, it's very, very tame.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Um so like the the the premise itself is this like so going off of the first one, um she discovers that this this teenage girl in America discovers that she's uh the heir to the throne in Geneva, this made-up country of Geneva?
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Uh Genovia.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Genovia, yes, not Geneva.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Geneva's real.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Yes, Geneva is real.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: Genovia.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know why it wrote Did I write down Geneva?
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: No.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: Genovia, and they're they're um but it's a country uh well known for its uh pears.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Has like a national fruit.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I didn't re-watch the first one, so I cannot remember a lot of it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I I I saw the first one when I was like when it came out, maybe a couple of the times.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: I can't remember much.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: I already saw this one for the first time today.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: And it's fantastic.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: It was enjoyable.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: I I enjoyed it.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Um so but yeah, so basically in this one, she goes to Genovia and uh and they and then she it's basically the queen is stepping down from her throne and she has 30 days to find a husband uh in order to become the queen and take over because there's some ruling that a queen can't be uh the queen without a husband.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And so that's the premise of this movie for the most part.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh that is the premise of a movie that came out within the past 20 years.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: But there's you know, there's the sort of the antagonist, obviously, of the movie is trying to uh seduce her.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Chris Pine.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, so that he may then take the throne.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, good point.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: He's trying to take the throne uh at the request of his uncle, who um who says like, oh technically he's in line for the throne, so he can he can do it through this uh process.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: So like it's a very typical for the most part it's a very typical like kid's uh rom-com, I guess.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Like rom com uh kind of yeah, yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: It's a rom com.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: So what um what stands out to you about this one?
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: What uh what's the what made you want to pick it?
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Um what made me want to pick it was that I remember loving it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: I uh it was my first exposure to Chris Pine, which every every young woman remembers.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Um uh yeah, I mean it's a fun rom-com.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's so harmless.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: It's it's so fun.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: It's so like wildly harmless.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Like it really feels like there was, you know, a script that they later were just like kind of put the Chris Pine stuff into.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Just like no, they put like the beginning Chris Pine stuff into when they're supposed to be out.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, I see.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: So you want you you think that they're just like gonna be friendly the whole time and then kind of gonna be Mamma Mia-esque in that there's no conflict.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: It's very it's a movie with no conflict.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's real, there's really pretty much no conflict in this movie except for like a couple of scenes.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: And even when there is conflict, it's kind of so tame that it's that you don't really you don't really like worry that it's happening or anything.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: You're not oh no, you're not like, oh no, what's gonna happen here.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: I'm like No, no, go.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, uh I also just really love the uh the scene where she um is like she's in that parade.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Mia, it's played by the lovely Anne Hathaway, is um part of the Genovian Independence Day parade.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: And she like sees some boys being mean to a little girl, and it's like she just lays out the thesis of the movie, which is treat girls good, yeah, and then comforts the girl.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: And then they all join the parade together, which is really nice.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: It's a nice scene.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: It's a nice, very direct scene.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very on the nose, but it's yeah, but it was nice.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I guess that is the premise.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: The whole theme of the movie is yeah, like you're saying, be nice to girls and treat them equally.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I also really love that scene just because it's it's a group of orphans, right?
- 17:05unknown: Yes.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: And this is like taking place again in 2004, and it's presumably like they are all they've all agreed that it's 2004 in their world too.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, these orphans look like they have been time traveled from a Charles Dickens book straight to this parade.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Like the orphans should be like the boys should instead of bullying the girls, should probably be like, oh, what are cars?
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Definitely it's very strange.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Is that the even the girl that speaks uh to it the the main girl that speaks to her, she's just like sucking her thumb and like and the way she speaks to her is just like what is it she says?
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: It's like uh like I cannot be a princess.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: I am Yeah, I should never be a princess or something like that.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: And her like her hair is matted, and it's like it's also it's interesting that they don't immediately investigate the orphanage.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very strange.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Um absolutely should.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Although she does she does like make up for it at the end.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she does like make her make the castle an another orphanage?
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I think that's what happened.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess they're like taking over a bigger place.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: So maybe they're like and they all get tiaras, I guess.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe we didn't watch the investigation that came after that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: That will come up in the third one.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Just the third one is Princess Diaries 3 logistics.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: So I guess like Chris Pine in this, do you think he's a better love interest than the guy in the first one?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Um, no.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: I think no because the guy in the first one was just so cool.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: The guy in the first one was he was in a band and he put MMs on pizza like that was normal.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: He ruled.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: Did you try that once?
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: It looks like no, absolutely not.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: No, I'm not I I don't have money to waste like that.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: I don't have money or MMs to waste.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: Um but he he was so cool.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Whereas Chris Pine, I think, I think Chris Pine, he I don't know.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: You here's the thing about them ending up together is you kind of um you kind of have to second guess the guy who started off you know wanting to take over.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's true.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: That was his first impression on her.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: That's his first impression on her, and then also like he doesn't do much to change that throughout the movie.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: No, he doesn't.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: He did he truly just like neging herself enough to uh be with him.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: And just planting the seed of doubt about the other guy.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: It's like yeah, the up but the other guy is so bland and so boring that that Chris Pine looks incredible.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: It's truly like you like you the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: And that applies to the Princess Diaries too, royal engagement.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: And that's what they're teaching little girls to believe.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: The opposite of love is indifference.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: If you feel like indifference, and uh and trust little girls, trust all women.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Those are two important messages.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: But what what I do like about these movies themselves though is that they like that her character of Mia, she's like she's so the opposite of what they expect out of princesses and uh in terms of like the way she portrays herself.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: And I think like it's it's nice to see that in and and to see it like appreciated as well because I I don't know, like I'm I'm very much this could get me in trouble, but I'm very much against the royal family situation.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't like royal family.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, hey, it won't get me in trouble, but I am too I do not like it and it's always so I don't know how to do it.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Well we've got one of your guys out here in LA now.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: And he's kind like the the thing is the thing I like that's what I like about uh Megan, like is is the fact that she's kind of moving things away from that stuffy behavior that they all have to kind of follow and Yeah.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I because I don't know.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: I just I can't imagine the hell she's been through.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: It's awful.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: Also, not this is neither here nor there, but Prince Philip is too old to be a prince.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: They've got to call him something else.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: What do you think they should call him?
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Just uh I mean sh like like Phil.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Phil.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: Just call him Phil.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's just Phil.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, you had your chance.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: Drop the prince.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: You're so old.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: You're almost a hundred.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's really true.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: I think he is almost a hundred.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: I think he's yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's like pushing a hundred.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can't call that guy Prince.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: That's like that's like an adult named Jimmy.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry if you know any adults named Jimmy.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: Only every talk show host.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: That's why they're all comedians.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: That's why they're all clowns.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Uh so like uh what else?
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: They they they she's 21 in this.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: She doesn't seem 21.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: She's 21, she's just graduated from college, she's graduated from Princeton, and she's like immediately on the on the plane on the really nice chartered private plane, writing in her diary and her cats doing whatever.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: And she lands in Genovia, and it's uh just an immediate sausage fest for her.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're like trying to introduce her to every guy to like that any bet every eligible bachelor, just think it's like see who can uh be her who could form who she can be arranged to be married with because they only have a month, and they're all awful.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Everyone is like a little kid at one point they introduce her to who's like immediately flirting with her, and it's really creepy.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a lot of um it's a lot of young uh hormones at play.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: They're wanting all of the young horniness.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: It's either like a really young kid or like some very old men.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: So, you know, at the end of the day, what options did she have?
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: That is the thing.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: She like she either had you know, like this this uh this what's his name?
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Uh Chris Pine or this other English guy that they bring in for hit for her.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he is boring.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: And he's boring, so and she only has one more day or whatever to end by the end of it.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so then she um her her best friend from the first movie, uh played by Heather Madarazzo, whose name is Lily.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Lily.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: I'm surprised you remember her real name and not her.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Um uh comes and visits her and then they look through a slideshow of men, right?
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, I think so.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: I think Lily comes after that.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: I Lyddy goes Liddy and Lily and her do the montage of like dressing and stuff.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then don't they don't they do the slideshow together?
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Oh maybe.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I remember her looking at Prince Har Prince William and like she rich is really into be like dating Prince William, but he can't because he's a he's gonna be the king of England, so he can't take over.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: And it also, he's like 21 back then, so it's it's it already dates itself, and it's just like, oh yeah.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: This is I've I forgot how old this movie actually is.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: It's very old, it's 16 years old.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Whoever was born during that movie can now drive.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: That's crazy.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Honestly, fucked.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: I was, yeah, how old was I when this came out?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: I would have been 15.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: So even I was younger than that.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, but she's like, she she's still she's still very clumsy.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: She uh initially she goes to the when she's having like uh meeting all the men, she meets uh Chris Pine and she steps on his foot immediately.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: And and that starts the whole thing, the whole thing off.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh I'm so clumsy.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: I'm like um, and he's like, Oh, don't worry, I've got giant shoes, I'm gonna fill them with my like swollen foot now.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: So he's like the charming guy, and he's like that's what you get from him.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Um then she goes to her huge suite and you get to meet her like the the two uh assistants that are just that's wild.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the two assistant characters also are also uh people who I think were like transported from a different time.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: That their accents are all over the place.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't they have like Cockney accents?
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they have like the most stereotypical Cockney accent you can imagine.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: And it's got some Dick Van Dyke Cockney accent.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it really is like a Dick Van Dyke Cockney accent, and it's just it's so funny because it's like oh that they're clearly not English.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: They're just like some LA actress that they've brought in.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: But yeah, and that's the other thing about this movie, is it's it's all so clearly on a like a soundstage.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: On a soundstage with like green screen on the background.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: It's really good stuff.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: I I I'm always like when they do that, I'm I'm more forgiving of kids' movies because I think uh it doesn't matter that much, but it's just so funny to see it.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Uh where where is Genovia supposed to like roughly be?
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Do you know?
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: I don't know, actually.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Because everyone's by like Switzerland or something?
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: That would be my guess.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Because there's like but there's like French accents, there's Greek people, there's I think there's like Yeah, Genovia is actually just but it's several islands.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: But and then there's like a lot of people with American accents as well.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Genovia is actually just an island off of San Francisco.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: They should do that, that would have been really funny.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, this is this is just Oakland.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: Um so Andrew Jacob Jacobi, Jacobi, he's the one that and she ends up like having to sort of like uh be wooed by and like she thinks and so they do like a montage of them dating over the course of a week, and they're just like walking places, they don't really do anything except for like walking everywhere.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: It's a montage of walking in different gardens, yeah.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: And then uh immediately he gives her an his grandmother's engagement ring.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, which is crazy, which is insane, yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: And he's like, and she just like goes, Oh, should I put it on then?
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Like, like no interest, no excitement, nothing.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: She's just like, Oh, should I put it on?
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, and then and then this is when you find out about Chris Pine and his uncle, and his uncle says, Oh, your task is to romance her.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: Uh and he says it's a Machiavellian thing, uh, power, power means never having to say you're sorry.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: That's a fun line.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: It's fun, it's it's crazy.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Like the the uncle is so over the top.
- 29:48unknown: Yeah.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he really is.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: I didn't look I looked him up afterwards.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: I didn't realize he was uh Gimli in Lord of the Rings.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Was he really?
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: He really is um uh quite over the top.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: But uh but what I get.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: John Reese babies.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: What a gut.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: I did not recognize him until until I looked him up.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: But uh like what are your thoughts on like I guess like the the whole plot of this Andrew Jacobi guy?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: This Andrew Jacoby guy.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: What are my thoughts on it?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Um like the rest of the movie, fantastic.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Just incredible.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Incredible to see somebody not change at all.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: I like to see a thing where no movement happens.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: And then it kind of I I like I like the storytelling strategy of petering out.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: It's a sign of strong writing.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: And then they just kind of they they just it's nice because don't they don't they all of a sudden just like agree to marry anyway?
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'm a man of my word and I'll marry you anyway.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Even though we just they just so they kiss and like they both say like, oh we felt nothing, there's no spark, and he's like, but I'll marry you anyway.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: It's nice to see some 21-year-olds finally settle.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess like what is his other than like just like I guess he what guess he wants to be the prince of uh Genovia.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: That's probably that's probably all it is.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Which is very sad.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: It's such a small country.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: It's such a small country, that shouldn't be that big a deal.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: But you want to uh like when when you were first watching it, did you want to be the princess of Genobia?
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Or the queen of the case?
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: When I first watched it, I I wished I did wish that Genovia was real.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, it would be so cool.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: I was first like, it would be so cool uh to live in a firehouse.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: And then I was like To live in a firehouse?
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's where the that's where Mine and her mom live in like a refurbished firehouse.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: Um uh and then I and then I thought it would be cool to get um to inherit a country.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: I now know that it probably wouldn't.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: It would really suck.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you didn't want to inherit a country right now.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: No, I would hate that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: But you probably do a better job than some of the other people doing it right now.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: I mean that's that's upsetting, isn't it?
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: That I probably would.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: That's really upsetting.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: That shouldn't be.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: That shouldn't be the case.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Do you want to take over America?
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: No, I'm good.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: I'm really doing fine.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, I actually though I think anyone any anyone could, if not if not Trump, you know?
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: I think someone else should.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, all you gotta do is something.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: The bare minimum.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: But like, um yeah, it's just weird seeing, like, so Genovia seems to have a thing where the royal family control everything, which is always a weird thing to see at least here in England, because they don't have any technically they don't really have any power here anymore.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: And so it's fun it's quite funny to see like, but I don't know if that's just they do this because it's like, oh, this is the expectation of like at least Americans, is like that the royal family rule everything.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that there's some sort of like um that there's some sort of uh uh like effect that the royal family might have on their country.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: I mean like the Queen got to make a couple of decisions recently, but like it's just her set just her agreeing to what the Prime Minister said, so it's not even like Exactly like but yeah, like so this it would be in more interesting to see like uh a movie where she was kind of fighting back against maybe like a uh some kind of political power as well.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: I'd have quite like to see that.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Um so like continue with the movie, like she she has like a l she has lessons uh for how to be the queen, and she has like a thing where she has to flake fire a flaming arrow through a ring, which is so funny.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I can't imagine anyone doing that and being able to perfect it.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: And this is so 2004, this was like during the Iraq war.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, it does make sense that she's it does make sense that she's having to practice bows and arrows.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: I thought you were gonna say it's during the Olympics, not the Iraq war.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: No.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: No, my thing was darker.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:28SPEAKER_00: It's that's yeah.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Although maybe it's not even set during that time.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: We don't know.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: We know that they have phones, yeah, exactly.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: That's about that's the only like instance of like modern times is that they have phones.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Everything else is just like it could be set in 1820 or something.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: Because they like they ride horses everywhere.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: They uh there's the uh the what's it called?
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: The j the bike that he rides, his granddad's bike, which is a penny farthing, which is just insane.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: With a giant wheel.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: A giant, giant wheel, yeah.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: It's a fun movie.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, then then they uh then Mia and Chris Pine secretly at night go to uh go to a lake, right?
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: And then they like dance and then they fall asleep.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: And then they wake up to none other than what what what do the royals always have to deal with is the paparazzi.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: The paparazzi, yeah.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Which is just and but like she immediately uh expects she's like, oh that's this was your fault, you did this, you uh you I shouldn't I couldn't I can't believe I trusted you.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Um which is fair, it really does look like it's him, but it does.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: She's so but like the fact that they fell asleep at a tree overnight is yeah so funny.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: How tired were you that you could fall asleep at a tree?
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: I couldn't do that at my most tired, I couldn't fall asleep outside at a tree.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: No, of course not.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Um I wanna I just want to go back because we missed we didn't really talk.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Well, you kind of brought it up earlier, but you talked about like the the the slumber party.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: I want to talk about that because it's it's just like she has the Genovia Independence Day, she has the orphan stuff, uh, and they play the Kelly Clarkson song.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: They do.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: And they're having a big time.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: This is the only point in the movie where they play um like contemporary music, everything else is like no music.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: So it's like Kelly Clarkson, Avril Levine, and I can't remember what and like an uh like another Disney Channel star, I think.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: It because I I I had this the subtitles on just so I made sure I could like caught things, and it came up with some other like Disney Channel star at the time that was like their song.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I forget I forget who who it was.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Um yeah.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: So they play it like it's it's just funny because it's just all back to back to back and then never again.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: But it's all during like the slumber party, which is supposed to be like her kind of like bringing modern day relaxing times to to and like fun times to this like stuffy uh side of things.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: It's uh it's a f and then even like even the queen can't comes in and like she's gonna go to bed, but she decides to join a lot join in and she goes sliding down the sta instead of like sliding on her belly on the on the uh on the mattresses, she stands up and surfs down the slide.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: She does surf.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: She does surf and it looks amazing.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: And did did you happen to read that Julie Andrews did this herself?
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: There was no stun, there was no stun double work.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: Julie Andrews did this herself.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: That's incredible.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Yes, I'm so happy that he did this.
- 39:11SPEAKER_00: And then afterwards she sings, and Raven Simone, this is when Raven Simone joins her.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Is Raven in the first movie?
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Um no.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: She is not.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: Because the way she greets her is like she knows her really well, and I don't I was like, I don't remember her being in it.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: I don't think she was in the first movie, no.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: But yeah, and then yeah, so Julie Andrews sings a song.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: I guess that's like at that point you're like, oh, I'm sold.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: This is this is the height of the movie for me.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: This is yeah, this is like the this is the climax of it.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: I can stop watching now.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: But you also find out here that um uh Chris Pine thinks that she should rule.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: He doesn't think that he should be the king of the country.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Which is interesting.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: It's like that is interesting.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: But you don't uh so this is yeah, I guess like he teaches her to find the error, and then uh this is when they sneak out, and this is the point where he falls at the thing.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: So they sleep outside, they immediately papa papa outside immediately find them, and then Andrew kisses Mia and realizes there's no spark, but they're gonna get married anyway.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: And then her mum arrives with the baby, which the baby of her former teacher.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, upsetting.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know why they kept the mum out of this for so long.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: I know, I love the mum.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: She comes in for like two minutes.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just like with a baby.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: The mum arrives, you don't see the you don't see the the father of the baby.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: It's just the mum.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: But you do see Paolo.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: Paolo is back.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Yes, Paolo is back, even though he betrayed everyone in the first movie.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: I don't remember it what he I remember him like doing the stuff, but I don't remember him betraying anyone.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: Uh I think he was like uh he like told the press about he like leaked the secret that Mia was a princess.
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: It would have been good to bring him back and be him the one that like leaks about her sneaking off then.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: I know, just uh stick with what works.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: Just heighten.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: This time he's heightened yeah, this time he's like leaking about the paparazzi about him about her running off to get the guy.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Um and then uh um basically what happens is that um uh Mia finds out that Chris Pine is actually innocent.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: He didn't do the he didn't do the paparazzi tournament or anything.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: No um and then there's a Stan Lee cameo for some reason.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: That's why.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: There's a Stan Lee cameo.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: I was like, why is he in this?
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: I could not work it out.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: It's like does he have a connection to Gary Marshall?
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: Does he have a connection to Julie Andrews?
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Like, what is his connection to this movie?
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: He just wandered on set.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: They kept filming.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: He's like, I think he's at the wedding.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's at the wedding.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: So then she so then Mia leaves the church.
- 42:31unknown: Yeah.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: He like can't go through with the wedding.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: And she and Julie Andrews.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: She and Julie Andrews have a lovely heart-to-heart.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: They have a yeah.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: And and then she decides to go back and give Andrew his ring back.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: And she gives a speech about like I should be able to be queen without I'm ready to be queen.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: I'd love Genovia, and I should be ready to be queen without a husband.
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: And then uh they say, I'll like do a motion, and then that everyone agrees.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: And that uncle gets angry and storms out, and Nicholas says, Oh, she should um but she should be queen.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: Uh there's a motion to end the law, they all agree, and then she says, Oh, well, she says to her uh grandmother, oh well you should you shouldn't let this date go to waste, and she get the grandmother gets married to Joseph.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, the driver.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: The driver, yeah, which I loved.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: I was like, yeah, good.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Amazing, amazing stuff.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: She fires her flaming arrow.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: They have the coronation day, and uh Nicholas and Mia kiss, and uh Mia becomes queen and makes all the changes.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: You see the the uh the um orphanage being like redes redesigned, and that's pretty much the end of the movie.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: That's pretty much all she yeah, that's that's all she does as queen of a country.
- 43:58SPEAKER_00: Baby steps
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she refurbishes the place.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: Which she could have done probably as princess.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: But yeah, still it's it's a nice touch to end the movie.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: It is a nice touch.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I guess we we've kinda touched on it, but like um yeah, you're so you love the movie because it's just like a nice, sweet, fun, harmless movie.
- 44:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't have to think too hard while you watch it.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: No.
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it like it's very, very low for what the movie is.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: It's at 26% of mutton tomatoes, and 59% audience score.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: And even the audience score is quite low.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Because I think everyone I've spoken to loves this movie.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: It's so fun.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: Everyone loves this movie.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: It's yeah, they should.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: It's a very fun movie.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: So what uh what about this over I guess like what yeah, you kind of I mean you kind of touched on it, but like why why this over other movies?
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: Um I think just because it's so fun, it's a fun cast.
- 45:22SPEAKER_01: These are just people you want to see have a good time together.
- 45:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:28SPEAKER_00: And what about um what about it?
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: Do you prefer it to the first one?
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: Um you know what?
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: When I'm in the mood, yeah.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: I think the first one is like a little too good.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 45:45unknown: Yeah.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: In like a legitimate way.
- 45:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so this one is just like I don't have to think, I can just watch it and not exactly.
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I get that.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: I get that.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: There's there's movies like that, and yeah, I guess like you are the right age for it at the time as well.
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: And so like, um when was the last time you saw this one?
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Um I saw it last probably like a year ago.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: It's I'm due for another watch.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah?
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm definitely due for another watch of this.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: Would you ever uh try because you're a writer yourself, would you ever try and write a sequel to it?
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: Oh man, would love to would love to write Princess Dires 2.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: I think that would be so fucking fun.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: I would love to write that.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: What would be like you don't have to like I guess like if you ever did want to write it, you don't have to spoil it, but like you I don't I doubt you actually want to write it properly.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: What would you be what do you do do you have an idea of what you want it to be?
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: Um again, I think it would be really funny to do just the logistical stuff.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Like let's just go back and let's just this is all information, let's just trudge through it.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's boring, but just to paint a fuller picture.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:15SPEAKER_00: Would you have Chris Pine still in it or would you replace him?
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I would have I'd definitely have him still in it.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Chris Pine now would be like much more interesting, I feel like.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: And then obviously Ann Hatha and Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews would definitely come back.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: They would have to.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: Uh I want to read a couple of like reviews.
- 47:40SPEAKER_00: Uh just like the headlines of the review, like the main synopsis.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: Um just to see what you think about them.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: Uh so I like this review here from The Village Voice that said scene ends abrupt the scenes end abruptly and laughter rare laughter as rare as Yetis.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: Yetis?
- 48:02SPEAKER_00: I guess it's Yetis, which is a weird phrase.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: Um and the overarching question seems to be, can we turn this into a franchise?
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: Which I think they clearly wanted to make it a franchise.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: And I don't know why I don't quite know why.
- 48:17SPEAKER_00: Maybe Anne Hathaway got too big for it.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, maybe they just didn't want it, maybe they didn't have the really good idea that I have about just making it all about the logistics.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: Just willfully making it very boring.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: Why would you want to make it boring though?
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: Don't know.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: Just for just uh just as an exercise and control.
- 48:43SPEAKER_00: Have you ever tried that before when you're writing?
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Uh I've not, but I mean there's a first time for everything.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:53SPEAKER_00: Uh another one said from BBC said a chocolate box sequel whose rose-tinted view of constitutional monarchy will provoke hoots of derision uh derisions this side of the pond.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: Which, yeah, it's basically what I was saying.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: It's just like they clearly don't understand what what happens here.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: Um and then let's see.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, this this one you might like.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: A fairy tale, once upon a time, this movie is for the princess in all of us.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: This movie is for the prince, but yeah.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: Everyone, like, yeah, I guess you wanted to be a princess back then, and it's saying anyone can be a princess.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: And they're right.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: It's true.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: Now anyone could be a princess.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: So, do you have any uh further thoughts on the movie itself that you want to get into?
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: No, I think I got into all of my thoughts.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: And had a great it's just a great movie.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: It's just a great movie that you love and you've loved since you were 10.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: It's just a classic movie.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's move on to the next segment then, which is uh do you have a movie that everyone loves that um that you absolutely hate?
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: Or that you yeah.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: I think I everyone really loved the notebook.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: I wasn't into it.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: Good choice.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: I I really wasn't into it.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: I was um I thought it was so long and so boring, and I thought, and it was that's that's pretty much it.
- 50:43SPEAKER_01: Just thought it was long and boring, thought it was really dramatic.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: Thought it was just trying.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: I thought it was just, you know what?
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: I thought it was just like a kind of a bad imitation of Titanic.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: So I've never seen it fully.
- 51:03SPEAKER_01: It's basically just like about a couple who uh uh do you mind if I spoil it for you?
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: No, you can spoil it for me.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna say there are spoilers coming.
- 51:17SPEAKER_00: So if you haven't seen it and you want to watch it, yeah, the spoilers coming.
- 51:21SPEAKER_01: It is basically just like about um uh this very old woman who's like clearly dying of dementia, and her husband reads her from or reads to her from a notebook every single day and retells their love story.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: And their love story was like they they were together and then they weren't together, and they and you know, they're of different classes, and the their her family wanted him to stay away, and I think he got smoking war?
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 52:00SPEAKER_01: It's exactly Titanic.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: Um and then uh yeah, that's like and then at the end she dies.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, so they they reverse it.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: They reverse it, yeah, exactly.
- 52:15SPEAKER_00: Uh are you a fan of Nicholas Spock's movies in general, or are you just uh no?
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: No.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: Nah.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: I've only seen like a handful of them and I yeah, I couldn't get into them.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's not great.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: This is much better than those.
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cool.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: That's my movie.
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thanks so much for that.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: Um how do you have any plugs?
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: How can we find you?
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm on Twitter um at BropiGoopa, which is B-R O T I G-U-P-T-A.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: Um, also at Instagram, the same username.
- 52:58SPEAKER_01: I am constantly posting and it sucks.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: I don't recommend following me, but if you do, thanks.
- 53:07SPEAKER_00: We're all kind of doing that right now.
- 53:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: We're all really online.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: Except for last night.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: That was pretty funny last night.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was that you know what?
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: It gave me a good break.
- 53:24SPEAKER_00: It made I'm not verified, so I I was like, oh, I'm all over this now.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take advantage.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me, by the way.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you for being on.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for being a guest and coming to talk to about the Princess Diary's 2 million engagement.
- 53:42SPEAKER_01: This was so fun.
