- 0:00Good morning and welcome to another episode of Morning Medical with Dr.
- 0:04Chow.
- 0:05I'm Dr.
- 0:06Chi-Ming Chow, and today we're diving into some pressing issues in public health that have been
- 0:11making headlines.
- 0:12It's December 30th, 2025, and as we approach the New Year, there's a significant concern
- 0:18that's been unfolding right here in Toronto.
- 0:24Toronto Public Health has reported a dramatic increase in overdose calls during the holiday
- 0:29season this year.
- 0:30Paramedics received 35 percent more overdose calls compared to the last two years.
- 0:35This increase is particularly alarming as it occurred over just an eight-day period from
- 0:40December 20th to December 28th, during which paramedics responded to 122 calls related to
- 0:48suspected opioid overdoses.
- 0:51What's even more concerning is that five of these overdoses were fatal, which is consistent
- 0:56with the previous year's statistics.
- 0:58From January through November, paramedics typically received about eight calls a day for
- 1:03overdoses.
- 1:04However, this number rose to 11 daily calls in December.
- 1:09The holiday season can be a difficult time for many, with feelings of stress or social
- 1:13isolation often heightened.
- 1:15This can lead to increased substance use, a point highlighted by Toronto Public Health in
- 1:20their release.
- 1:22Lorraine Lam, a crisis outreach worker in east Toronto, noted that more people tend to use
- 1:27substances over the holidays, while harm reduction programs often take a break during
- 1:32this time.
- 1:33A significant factor contributing to this issue is the province's decision to cut back on
- 1:39supervised consumption sites.
- 1:41These sites provide critical services such as drug checking for harmful additives, naloxone
- 1:47training, and distribution, as well as referrals to other social services.
- 1:52However, many sites have been closed or converted to abstinence-based treatment models
- 1:59due to government policy changes.
- 2:02The city's drug checking service has found that many opioid samples are contaminated with
- 2:07dangerous additives.
- 2:09Specifically, 81 percent of fentanyl samples checked between December 13th and December 26th
- 2:15were laced with medetomidine, a veterinary tranquilizer that can dangerously lower
- 2:20breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate.
- 2:23Public health authorities recommend keeping naloxone on hand if you're using drugs and
- 2:27advise against using alone.
- 2:29Instead, it's safer to "buddy up" with someone you trust.
- 2:33This advice is crucial as we navigate this challenging time.
- 2:37It's a reminder of the importance of community safety measures and the need for ongoing
- 2:42support systems for those struggling with substance use.
- 2:47As we look back on the year, it's important to acknowledge that health challenges can affect
- 2:52anyone, regardless of their status or fame.
- 2:55In 2025, several high-profile celebrities went public with serious health diagnoses, shedding
- 3:02light on conditions that many people face every day.
- 3:06Let's take a closer look at five of these stories.
- 3:10First, we have Kim Kardashian, who was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm.
- 3:15This was discovered after she underwent a brain scan with psychiatrist Doctor Daniel Amen of
- 3:20Amen Clinics.
- 3:21In an episode of "The Kardashians," Kim revealed that the scan showed 'holes' in her
- 3:26brain, indicating low activity and pointing towards a potential aneurysm.
- 3:31Doctor Amen explained that this could be due to chronic stress, which is not uncommon for
- 3:36someone juggling multiple responsibilities like Kim.
- 3:40Despite this setback, Kim was preparing to take the California bar exam, although she later
- 3:45shared that she did not pass.
- 3:48Next is Dave Coulier, known for his role in "Full House." Earlier in the year, Dave
- 3:54announced that his cancer had returned, just months after celebrating a cancer-free status.
- 3:59He was initially diagnosed with stage three non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2024 and, after
- 4:05chemotherapy, was recovering.
- 4:07However, in October, he faced a new, unrelated diagnosis of HPV-related oropharyngeal tongue
- 4:14cancer.
- 4:15This type of cancer is believed to be linked to long-term human papillomavirus infection.
- 4:21Despite the shock, Dave remains optimistic as the cancer was caught early and has a high
- 4:26curability rate.
- 4:28Eric Dane, known for his role in "Grey's Anatomy," has been facing a battle with
- 4:33amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, this year.
- 4:39Eric publicly shared his diagnosis in April, expressing gratitude for his family and the
- 4:45support he's received.
- 4:47Despite the challenges, Eric remains hopeful and determined to fight the disease.
- 4:52He has been open about his condition, sharing that he only has function in one arm and has
- 4:58experienced falls, including one that required stitches during the Emmy Awards.
- 5:03His ex-wife, Rebecca Gayheart, has been a supportive presence, ensuring he receives
- 5:09round-the-clock care.
- 5:11Moving on to Billy Joel, the legendary musician was diagnosed with normal pressure
- 5:16hydrocephalus in May.
- 5:18This rare brain condition involves an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid around the
- 5:23brain, which can cause issues with balance, hearing, and vision.
- 5:27Billy had to cancel several concerts to focus on his recovery, undergoing specific physical
- 5:33therapy as part of his treatment.
- 5:36Despite the challenges, Billy has maintained a positive outlook, noting that while he feels
- 5:42good, his balance has been affected, likening it to feeling like he's on a boat.
- 5:47Lastly, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay revealed that he had a basal cell carcinoma, a type of
- 5:54skin cancer, removed from his face in August.
- 5:58After the procedure, Gordon shared images on social media showing the stitches beneath his
- 6:03ear, using the opportunity to remind his followers about the importance of sunscreen.
- 6:09He humorously assured fans that the procedure was not a facelift, injecting a bit of his
- 6:15trademark humor into a serious situation.
- 6:19These stories remind us that health issues can touch anyone, regardless of their fame or
- 6:24fortune.
- 6:25They also highlight the importance of early detection and the power of public figures
- 6:30sharing their health journeys to raise awareness and encourage others to seek help
- 6:35when needed.
- 6:38Now, let's delve into a topic that might be on many minds as we approach New Year's
- 6:42celebrations: hangovers.
- 6:44With festivities often comes alcohol consumption, and subsequently, the dreaded
- 6:49hangover.
- 6:50So, what exactly is the ultimate hangover cure?
- 6:54While there's no magical remedy that can instantly erase a hangover, there are several
- 6:59strategies that might help alleviate the symptoms.
- 7:03Hangovers are essentially a result of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and the
- 7:09body's reaction to alcohol's by-products.
- 7:13Therefore, rehydrating and restoring electrolytes are crucial steps in recovery.
- 7:18One common suggestion is to drink plenty of water.
- 7:23Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it causes the body to lose water, leading to dehydration.
- 7:29Sipping on water throughout the night and before bed can help mitigate this.
- 7:34Some people also swear by sports drinks, which contain electrolytes that may help restore
- 7:39balance in your system.
- 7:41Eating a nutritious meal can also aid in recovery.
- 7:45Foods rich in carbohydrates, such as toast or crackers, can help stabilize blood sugar
- 7:50levels.
- 7:51Eggs, which contain cysteine, can help break down acetaldehyde, a toxic by-product of
- 7:57alcohol metabolism.
- 7:58Bananas, with their high potassium content, can replenish lost electrolytes.
- 8:03Some research suggests supplements like Vitamin B and C can be beneficial.
- 8:08Vitamin B helps with energy production, while Vitamin C may support the liver in detoxifying
- 8:14the body.
- 8:15However, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any
- 8:20supplement regimen.
- 8:22Rest is another critical component.
- 8:25Giving your body time to recover and repair is essential.
- 8:29If possible, allow yourself a little extra sleep to help your body heal.
- 8:34Light exercise, like a walk, might also boost endorphins and improve blood circulation,
- 8:40aiding in recovery.
- 8:42It's important to note that while these tips might ease hangover symptoms, the only surefire
- 8:47way to avoid a hangover is to drink in moderation or abstain from alcohol altogether.
- 8:53Understanding your limits and staying hydrated can go a long way in preventing the discomfort
- 8:58of a hangover.
