- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Three Yards Perkati, a podcast covering the Miami Dolphins and the NFL.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now, here's your host, Chris, Alf, and Simon.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_01]: We're on this three-yard film, all the time.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: Chris Kaufman is here.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, my client's seat is not here.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: He is on holiday in Italy.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_01]: Must be next.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_02]: Must be next.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how many of those has he had already this year?
- 0:33[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, he travels a lot.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he travels almost too much.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know, he travels almost too much.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like traveling that much.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think when you're in Europe, it's like, you know, it's just you just do that.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, because you're essentially in one continent.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: So you could just go, you know what I mean?
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like it's like if you follow your football team around and in the college football season, you know, all right, like I'm going up to Georgia.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just like the same thing is going to Germany for me.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, pretty much, you know, uh, this shows brought to you by progressive insurance America's number one auto insure and I would like to welcome back, although we're not doing it for them right now because we don't have active promo codes, but they will be with us for the entirety of the football season, at least the Dolphins football season until eliminated.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully the AFC
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: I will give you promo codes.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: They go active on October 8th.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: We're excited about that.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have them for the entire year.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to touch on this very very briefly, the officiating.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're going over it before we won on air 233 penalties the most penalties called in one week if you noticed if you watched football this week And you were like, man, these games are not as much fun.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that cowboy's Texans game was a ton of fun And I thought that Drake made played absolutely awesome against the bills and Josh Shannon was as inexplicably doing really, really stupid things
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: like throwing the ball behind your back and your own end zone.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you saw that play Chris.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_02]: No, I didn't see any of that game.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: Well, he did not get call for intentional grounding.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: So evidently, he was watching a receiver with his ass because that's the only thing that was facing down field when he just threw the ball wildly and it just hit the ground in front of a defender and there was no offense to play around, but he didn't get called.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: But 233 penalties were called.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: The most since 2015 in week two, that's a very, very long time ago.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: 17 touchdowns have been reversed in four weeks to give you some context last year that was five.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_02]: all year.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, that's a, that's a pretty big number.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_01]: One official was suspended for two games.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: He was audibly heard screaming FU to Trimic Bride.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: I can't see that.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: Since that journalistic endeavor, I can't say what he was saying.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: He was just screaming fuck you at the top of his lungs to Trimic Bride.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what made him so mad.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like,
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: on a Sunday or no, you got to be pretty angry on a Sunday to be screaming that at the top of your lungs.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: But evidently, this official was with Trimic Bride.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: And there's further audio that suggests that Trimic Bride was just telling the guys, you're ruining this game.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I've heard that one before.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: My label was giving one official, and I was noticing it, and I was like, man, variables on this guy.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: And the guy just had enough and said 15 yards
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so he have variable for 15-yard penalty and then one guy started screaming at a Vikings defender because he bumped into him.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: That guy got suspended for a week.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: I guess this is a long winded way of asking you.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: Do they have an officiating problem in the NFL?
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: Because this was that good.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is not a good look for the league this week.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you're never like seeing 17 touchdowns
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: should be happening especially for you know you're putting them on pace for was it for them on pace for like 77 touchdowns called back for the year.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously way out of way out of pocket.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_02]: So they they're probably I mean that alone would probably cause them I mean I saw that they suspended the guy that
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: was yelling at Tramic Bride, so they're getting the whole of that.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_02]: There was an interesting moment in the Dolphins game, too, where an official got bumped, and the player who bumped him was on the Vikings, and he was just trying to explain that he got pushed into the official, and the official
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: so mad.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_02]: You're so angry.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't penalize the guy, but it was just like, you know, pointing like, get your ass back over.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like, it was really, it was, what's got up the officials, but like they're clearly mad about something.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, but yeah, the NFL is going to get control of 17 touchdowns being called back.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the years like how many penalties we have around this time of year, and it's definitely elevated, but it's, you know, the touchdowns is the, is the big deal.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's not, it's not anything more than that.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know, maybe the officials are pissed off at something or other.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, something, something is with them.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I will say this.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: If you watch, if you're a big watcher of NBA basketball, and we are both of us are.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's very common for, you know, for an official to turn around to the head coach and say, technical.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe even throw a coach out, like I believe, like three or four got thrown out of games last year for a past.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_02]: I have to have to say it in multiple times.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: So it happens all the time and players get technicals all the time as well.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: I hope.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I really do hope this.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that this is not going to be a thing in the NFL.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: Well, where what happened with Vrable does not become something where they're going to use to police.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_01]: the behavior of head coaches because sometimes it's performative your team has to hear you be upset and I think Jeff Haffley even himself today was asking the media I think it was Chris Berkins who asked him about the juju brunt's call and he goes, did you think it was a good call?
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: and Chris Perkins said, no, I thought it was a bad call.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: And he goes, then you should ask, dude, you Brent said, he thought it was a bad call.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: All I wanted to do was ask the official, and I'm paraphrasing now with Jeff Hathley.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: But Jeff Hathley said, all I wanted to do was ask the official, what did he do wrong so I can coach him better so he won't do it next time?
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: And imagine Jeff Hathley just gets hit for 15 yards.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: Because he's asking sarcastic questions, you know, of the officials.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't think he's going to get it with anything.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't seem like the type and he doesn't even, he's not even willing to go on record and the press conferences during the week afterwards.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that whole exchange was basically Jeff halfway saying, I'm not going to say a word about the call, whatsoever, and get myself in trouble.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: What do you think?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_02]: You tell me what you think, and then I think you said something
- 7:58[SPEAKER_02]: per quite basically suggested that he should call a league and tell them that he didn't think it was the good call.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, he's in a previous week, even there where he was asked, you know, are you, are you going to send this play in with the league and stuff like that?
- 8:15[SPEAKER_02]: He won't comment.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_02]: He said, no, I'm not going to, I'm not going to comment on what plays.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to send the league and stuff like that.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: And
- 8:24[SPEAKER_02]: And then he just went into a very logical explanation that like, you know, the most important thing is that they just give us the feedback so that we know how to coach him so we know how they're going to call it.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: He's not the type, he's not the type to, you know, get in trouble for this, you know, if I had to pick somebody that's going to get his ass thrown out.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_02]: I want to go with Ben Johnson.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: that doesn't seem.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_02]: He's great.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_02]: I think that, um, yeah, he's a, I think he's a, he's a little bit of a, of a spark plug and, and he'll get his ass, he'll get his ass tossed out.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that guy is not well, he's intense, he's intense, his team, his team, I like his team.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: And once they get kill of Williams back, they're going to be really good.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: They do a lot of things well.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of things that pretend to winning playoff games.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: They run the ball well.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: They play physical defense.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: Their coach is crazy.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: So all of those things, I think, work and their favor.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_02]: Move it on.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: He was mentored by Joe Filbin.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know?
- 9:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: He was once.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: We had all these guys.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: All these guys were here.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't have any of these guys.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: Including the coach who I happened to think.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to call him the best coach, but he's isn't the top five.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's very hard to make a five.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: I just know that Sean McVay is the best coach in the NFL.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that's just my opinion, but if I had to do a top five, I'm pretty certain that Kevin McConnell is in there because good God.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Look, I'm going to give some credit to the dolphins defense.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: They were on the field for a while.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's a 77 place.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was 78 or something.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, 778 plays something like that.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: They had a special teams, unit, actively sabotaging them, them the entire first half.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: Their offense couldn't sustain drives.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: And they give up 15 points, okay?
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought they played really, really well.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that there were physical upfront, they were getting after the quarterback.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: So that's why I think Kevin Conno's pretty damn good because they're undefeated.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: And they're finding enough offense to go for now.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess we'll start right here.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: Man, your overview on the game, game adventures, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you know, I didn't think this is how the game would go.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't, I thought that Minnesota, you know, I had more faith in Minnesota to get their offense, you know, back on track, because I do respect Kevin Connell, some Kevin O'Connell, so much as a head coach and as an offensive guy.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_02]: I thought they were really going to get get it back and they did not and that that I thought that that was a little bit surprising.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_02]: So the fact that it ends up being an under, you know, we talked about the over under, right.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I'm a little bit surprised by that.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: But the defense, the Miami defense, you cannot You can't really criticize them.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_02]: I know that, you know, you could say, well, get get your get yourselves off the field sooner so that you don't have
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: 10 play drives.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think they had four, you know, five drives that they live five drives that were 10 plays are better.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_02]: 10 to 15 plays in the drive.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, it is somewhat as part of your duty as the defense to get your get off the field on third down and not a while that happened.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, they didn't have much help from the special teams or the offense, and, and, you know, at the end of it, they kind of, they kind of just got tired.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: And, and you could see it, and so I think that, you know, they did that hero heroic performance in someone else's stadium.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_02]: And that was something that wasn't, you know, I needed to see that really because there has been a strong difference in Jeff Halfway's history between road and the way in terms of defense.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: And that had already kind of shaped up this year with the dolphins because the two get or the games that they played on the road against the Raiders and the, um, and the 49ers, the defense, especially against the 49ers defense really.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: You know, kind of rough looking.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: Then they played the one game at home against the chiefs and ever and worse it narrowing all like is this defense actually, you know, showing some green shoots, you know, because they're stopping the chiefs offense.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_02]: But they went ahead and did that on the road.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's that's great.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's great step forward for them.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm really happy with that.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, this is.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_02]: game adventures and maybe one day we're going to be looking at this as the, you know, the Jeremiah Smith game, you know, that's what that's what Simon said.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_02]: Because the dolphin should have won.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that they had it.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, between the officiating and just a toenail and a finger nail and a finger tip, you know, that's the difference in the game.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_01]: Now, that's the thing about, yes, three, you're talking about, we're less than, we're talking about millimeters.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about centimeters.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe two inches total on three different things.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_01]: We're extremely consequential.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: Very good.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: And it could have given them the win.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: And one of them was an extended drive, which leads me to my next question before we go to break.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_01]: the way I looked at this game was just the office just couldn't sustain enough and I understand that it's 37 plays like what can you get look that they scored 10 points look it's not great on 37 plays but it's not horrific either it's a little bit better than what they've actually been producing this season
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I watch the tape, and I'm like, there's just not enough here.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's only 37 plays nine carries a hundred yards and by the way, one of them that went for negative one yard could have gone for another 70 and a touchdown, but evidently somebody touched all the Gordon and then you had the the Chris Bell one.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: Look, it's, you know, saying if and this and if and that.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to, let's finish up here with Malik Welles before we move on to a little bit brighter spots from this game in the second half of this show.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at the Malik Welles tape and today on the three-yards per carry tourter account, I put up a video of every single attempt, you know, with, you know, no bias.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: My, I didn't share my opinion.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_01]: I just posted, you know, the all 22 of in 17 attempts.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's only 17 attempts.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's a five-minute video.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: You go watch it for yourself.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's 17 actual passes left his hand.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: So I posted those and if you watched that, man, we could debate to the cows come home.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think if you're reading the leverage on the zero, I think you just throw that thing blind to the flat.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're taught that.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I think Shomukva likes to teach more flood concepts against zero.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: And he's had some success lately against Brian Flores.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: but I think that there's space out there in the flat.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: So we could we could debate that one to the Kaos come home.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: I hated that he didn't step into the throw to Kevin, Kevin Coleman on that out route.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: He was butt naked open for a first down that would have extended it and put it into plus territory.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: Which player are you talking about?
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: That was earlier in the game.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: That was early in the third quarter.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of threw it off with back foot and he skipped it to
- 16:33[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, was that when he went to Coleman on the backside off of like it was was like his fourth reading kind of like started here kind of came over here went back here and then finally came back to Kevin Coleman and and hit him on the backside like that was that was that was a that was a bit out of structure as far as as far as his progression.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, he skipped it.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: He threw it too low and it was just, you know, just an unfortunate he missed he had to He had to Two big misses that way and Which, you know, when you only throw them all 17 times, you know, Two two misses He had another one real high early on second drop back of the day against again, or not against but two Chris Bell
- 17:24[SPEAKER_02]: Where I thought he, I thought he made the right read or of course he made and that's where his read progression started and and it was in Chris ball was singled up so it was a good it was a good decision but you know just just bad ball and he had he had two of those you know that I felt like he wishes he could probably take back.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and like passer rating is not the end all be all before a thousand years passer rating has been kind of correlates to winning and losing it just doesn't you know don't argue with me argue with the math all right and had he completed that past to Chris Bell.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he did, he did, he did my plate.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: It was called back.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's, yeah, it's called back.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, it's not his fault that it didn't go for a touch time, but had he done that.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: It would've been like, what, a 120 pass rating, 130 pass rating.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_02]: So you know he complete he did complete that pass like he it's not like one of those like oh he missed it or he dropped it or you know it's just barely Office fingertips or whatever like now he completed that pass it's just that you know on that replay just ever so slightly really was a toenail Chris Bell had
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: lost a little bit track of where he was on the field and his his cleat just barely edged over the the sideline out of bounds and boy you know I I do question along with you that the refs you know saw that.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_02]: like really you really sell that you know that flag came out immediately you know but um but they did and and I'm replay if it's see this thing if it if it would have gone for the score it's an automatic review and um and they would have they would have seen it on the replay they had a pretty clear angle.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_02]: So, no, it didn't go, but yeah, that would have been a 108-pass rating and the first time since week nine of last year, anybody's got a 108-pass rating on the Vikings.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: You do have the best defensively, it gets not even close at this point.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_02]: And that would have, yeah, that would have, I do wonder if we'd be having a different
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I tend to agree.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now, uh, next week, they might catch a break.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: Joe Burrow minus all his weapons except Microsekki.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll be the Microsekki show at Hard Rock Stadium.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: So that one could be interesting, but that's like, that's like welcome to Miami, right?
- 20:19[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, Joe Burrow without Jamar Chase and T. Higgins is like, it's kind of exactly what we're
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: what we're sitting here with the dolphins trying to do with Malik Willis like, you know, hey, go out there and grow to a to a 5 foot 10 inch, you know, fifth round rookie and they, and a, and a bigger third round guy who's coming off an ACL and missed all training camp.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_02]: And then, and then Malik Washington, who is, you know, your experience of veteran and, and then Greg Dalsuch, who's bounced around the league and, you know, I don't want to get into that again.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: And, and so yeah, and we're sitting here in every single pass word dissecting.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_02]: And if Malik will us, you know, didn't complete it down the field for 20 yards or something like that, or God forbid, got sacked or something like that.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like, oh, we can't read the field.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_02]: He can't do, you know.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm just like, you know, look at every play and every detail of every play and yeah, did you make mistakes in this game?
- 21:28[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: I detailed for our discord earlier today.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how to be a good four, five of them.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: The most egregious error aside from the
- 21:41[SPEAKER_02]: Um, which was more an Austin Jackson pass protection issue than than anything, but, um, but ultimately every I say this all the time every sack is on the quarterback right it's a quarter back sack.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_02]: The quarterback is the only guy that can prevent every single sack.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and, and so aside from that, the most ingredient error was on a third down.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: I felt like he really did have
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: off to the right to the right flat and and Jalen told work in excellent job with the pick on that play and not getting called for it and and it was there and it was the first I think it was the first thing on milk's progression just judging from just judging from the old 22 and he turned it down and I was wondering why he turned it down because the spacing was there for a third and forward to complete that.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_02]: Um, any ended up taking a sack on that play.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_02]: So that was the most egregious error that he had during the game.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_02]: The third down at the end, the zero blitz.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, again, this is something that on our discord, Kyle, crabs, and I have kind of gone back and forth with a little bit.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_02]: I'll tell you what, that safety to Kevin Coleman's side had outside leverage.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_02]: You don't know if he's dropping deeper, you don't know if he's squatting.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: If he's squatting and you throw that trust ball to Kevin Coleman, then I'm sorry.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's over at the pick six, and that's the danger.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: That's the calculus that I think Malik Willis had to make before the play even started.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_02]: Is that safety is outside leverage to Kevin Coleman's
- 23:24[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and, and so if the guy squats and jumps it, then it's there.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_02]: And the wild card is Josh Medellis, who is kind of their Swiss Army knife, uh, multi-tool safety guy, um, was roaming around the middle and you watch him pre-snap, and he's literally looking like he might either drop back in Tampa, which would,
- 23:49[SPEAKER_02]: Which would actually give the safety with the outside leverage every reason to squat and jump on Kevin Coleman's ball or he might come in the blitz like, you know, he ended up coming on the blitz.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_02]: But I think he only made that decision very last second because of the motion of a tight end and and so he decided to come on the blitz and.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_02]: And that's the calculus is I think, you know, I think Kyle Krabs was saying earlier that, you know, that from playbooks and from coaching points that he's been taught from different coaches, you know, against the zero look and and with that spacing, you know, that side of the field is shut down you go for you go for the the best outside option that you had and this this case he had.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_02]: Chris Bell working against I safety by himself and he trusted it and Chris Bell can come down with it.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: That was the safer decision.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_02]: You throw a you throw a lollipop to to Kevin Coleman on a trust ball and you can't really be surprised if it gets picked six.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_02]: options on a play like that.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so I can't really, it's not what I'm saying is it's not black and white that he made the wrong decision here.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to review it on the film room and they're going to have their own take on it.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_02]: But I don't think it's a black or black and white, you know, oh, he definitely should have gone here.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_02]: I just don't think that that's accurate.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, we can criticize that play because it was the last one.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but but really I think that there were bigger mistakes earlier in the game with that third down sack me and one of them and then the fumble this extra and I don't think that that that zero on third down even really qualifies.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm wondering why when the rest of the league is just going to start adopting a stomach very does against Brian Flores' defense, because, you know, some of it just essentially just goes out there with one play.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: He'll go field side flood and it's flat corner.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: He has the three to the corner.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: The three to the flat, the two to the corner and the one on the input.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's essentially a scissors concept with a flat plan as a safety valve.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: And that's gonna occupy a lot of people.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: And if it doesn't occupy a lot of people, somebody could pop wide open.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: Then it was zero has zero has come up already and that's that's wrong growing the football though.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_02]: Sure, but but master after that's a big arm with Lake Willis has a big arm too.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: So it's you know, we've come across zero is being a problem already.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_02]: It was a problem earlier in the season.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_02]: There was a zero where I felt again.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_02]: It was the end of the game situation.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_02]: And, and I felt like Dulse it didn't go hot and it was, um, it was the one that he, that Malik had to go to, uh, to Kevin Coleman on the incutt or on the slant and Coleman was facing press and, um, and it wasn't going to be open.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_02]: And so, and it wasn't open, you know, but, but he reason he had to do that is he was looking for Dulse it should go hot and Dulse it didn't kind of took his time.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_02]: And and I just think all the way around this offense needs to have better design against the zero and you know maybe maybe Bobby slow it would say you're crazy you don't know what you're talking about of course we have good but I'm just I'm just going to say the proof is in the pudding you haven't done shit against the zeros all year so so you know do better coach I would challenge him on that and say.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_02]: that clearly you all need to do better and figure that out and whether I'm off-base by saying that that could be a design issue or whatever it is, it doesn't matter you need to do better.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, by the way, Bryan Flores' worst games by his defense the last three seasons have been against Ben Johnson and Sean McFey.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's a secret that it's those two guys that have
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: how to deal with the pressure that the Vikings bring.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: All right, we're going to go to break.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: And when we come back, we're going to talk about a few more positive things than all the negative that we just heat up on you in the first half hour.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: But first, these words, and we're back.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to start off with one more negative thing.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: Evidently, according to PFF, Zach Sealer was one of the worst defensive tackles in pro football this past weekend.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I would like to say that that evidently makes me an idiot and somebody a non-ball knower and somebody that can't watch football because watching it live, I was almost giddy.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to watch
- 29:08[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe this is a weird thing.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: I like to watch his ex-heal-play football when he's good.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: He's good And when he's good, it's fun to watch and it fills you up with confidence I thought he was great on the broadcast.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: I watched him on I watched him on the film again Man, he looked good and God, it just gave me that feeling like man.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to trade this guy
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want the rest of his career here in Miami.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he was great and PFF, I think was, I don't know what the whole are watching.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he was our best defender, your thoughts.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: PFF grades are complete joke.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_02]: We all know that everybody, everybody knows like listen, I have long supported their stat keeping and they have these higher resolution stats, you know,
- 29:56[SPEAKER_02]: was that you're going to find stuff here that you'll never find on the ESPN stats, you know, whatever, or anytime you check a player's stats, or even if you go to splits and stuff like that, you're going to find stuff on PFF that you're never going to find in.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I appreciate them for that.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_02]: But they long time ago, they ventured into, you know, into a realm more strongly
- 30:25[SPEAKER_02]: where they're going to grade the plays and they've been grading the players for a long time, it's just that they started to place more of an emphasis on it.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_02]: They used to be more of a stat shop with creative analytics, which I support and now they are a grading shop and they're
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: But they're a complete joke.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: They're meaningless.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: You shouldn't bother looking at them at all.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't care what they say about it.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_02]: It is a joke.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_02]: You don't look at that.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: Zack Sealer had three pressures on the day.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_02]: Two sacks.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_02]: Two sacks on the days.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_02]: As a defense of tackle, one of the worst defense of tackles and footfallers.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: We can okay,
- 31:17[SPEAKER_02]: It's not like, it's not like, you know, nobody decided to block the guy.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you know, like he just, he executed on those plays.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's just really, really bizarre and not worth spending more time on.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that the dolphins, if we're going with good, right, from today, fourth quarter probably should have been 24, 12, right?
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: There's a tonal play, there's a finger nail play.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: Alley Gordon gets through the, gets through the whole trips on his own, Blake Cashman just barely scrapes a finger, a finger across his shoulder pad.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_02]: I think it was, you know, on review, it would have been called back.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_02]: I think there was conclusive evidence that he got him with the finger.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_02]: But that's how close it was.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: And then the, the roughing the punner penalty,
- 32:16[SPEAKER_02]: Even micro error was it was confused by how quickly they reviewed that and it's just like I don't even know what triggered the review that you know, like, but anyway, like that's how close it was it should have been 2412 24 points against the best defensive league by far the best defensive league and you can go straight to, you know, EPA and any number of analytics that I'll show you that in their house.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_02]: Um, on a day when they're playing well, that defense was playing well.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's not like that defense didn't get it that day.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like no, they got it.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, it just it just shows that the power of the explosives that Miami can create with a guy like a dynamic player like Belique Willis.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, binds on her.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_02]: can overcome the good defense.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_02]: This is all we've been asking for, right?
- 33:10[SPEAKER_02]: For years, underbite mechanical is like, yeah, but you can't do it against a good defense.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_02]: You can't do it against a good team.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: This was a great defense, not a good defense, a great defense in their home.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: And we should have had 24 points heading into the fourth quarter.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that like that and because because we made some dynamic plays and and I think that that's not enough people were not we're not really giving enough credit for that because the whole, you know, no excuses thing and the no excuses thing.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just I'm just tired of it.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's like people don't love people don't want details.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: I don't understand it's like I don't want to know what actually happened, but I want to pretend I know what actually happened.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_02]: You know, like and and it's just very confusing to me, um, it's not excuses as details and the details say that yes, there was a toenail and a fingernail away from 24 points against the best defensive league in their house, you know, on a day that they're play on on only.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_02]: nine drives in 37 plays or whatever that you know that was um which is pretty incredible and it and it is actually a big vote of confidence in this mob what the dolphins are doing and trying to build right here they're trying to build a team that can go against these good defenses.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_02]: And can go against these good teams on the road in bad adverse conditions and still have a layer of performance that is the ability to create a big play even when things are not or several big plays.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_02]: Even on days when things are not going so good and things were not going so good.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_02]: We came into the day like we're talking about.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, they convert third down's really well while they had until until yesterday like there they were convert they were good at they were good at two things.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_02]: They don't go three and out that often.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_02]: and they convert well on third deaths.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_02]: In fact, heading into the day, there were probably number five in the league in converting standardized third deaths.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_02]: Number three in the league, anything third and eight or better.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_02]: And then yesterday, they can't convert a third down against this defense and they keep going three and out against this defense.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_02]: You know, this is this is a good defense and things were not going well, but it doesn't matter.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_02]: because then you have the second slice, which is your ability to go deep on them or to make a big play happen that gets points on the board.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_02]: And this offense, even without good receivers, even without, you know, a Devon HM, clearly has that ability.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_02]: to do that.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: There were a tonal away.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_02]: There were finger nail away.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so I think that that's, that's a really, that's a, that's a thing to take a lot of confidence from because Someday we're going to go against defenses where yes, we're converting the third downs and we're being a little bit more consistent.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: No, we're not making all the rookie mistakes and all the creative ways that Ricky's find to screw up a play like this time stepping out of bounds.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_02]: by a toenail, you know, last week was not last week was not getting lined up and getting a touchdown called back because of that.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: When we stop doing that and then we do have the consistency on third downs and then on top of it, the big playability, the explosive playability because of Malik Willis at quarterback and guys like Chris Bell and Caleb Douglas, that's how
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: like that's what it looks like.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_02]: And and and I think that we're seeing kind of proof of concept week after week of that building.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_02]: Got to get there and they got to stop making all the all the mistakes.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's not like they're making a ton of them.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: They're not lead the league in penalties.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, although the league is leading the league in penalties of evidently according to what you're saying, um, you know, so, so, but they're, they'll get there and when they get there, it could be really compelling as long as the defense is still playing like they are.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's, let's try to, you know, think this out a little bit here before we talk a little bit more about the, about the good, like what, what can they improve on in on offense and I just have a couple of things, okay.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think that malecuals, I don't think malecuals has a processing issue.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that that's the, now that's the new fun buzzword on, on to his ex right now is processing processing.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: And the memes are out there, everybody's putting up an amiga computer as malecuals to the processor or an apple three.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, my father owned an apple three and an amiga.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: I owned an amiga.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_01]: My first, my first computer.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_02]: I did not own an amiga.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_02]: I owned a tandy at one point.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, my father used to tell me, you know how much that a mega cost, and I'm like, I know, I can do it just to be extremely expensive.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I remember that a mega used to cost, I think, like, for grand.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, 30 years ago, all right.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I wanted to make a, that was my first computer ever.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I've seen all the memes.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's his issue.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think he has trust issue.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_01]: He has to work on some of his mechanics.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's a bit erratic in that regard, I think.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: Just set your feet, sink your feet with the play call.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_01]: And if you do that, you're going to be just fine because your arm is still strong.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_01]: You could reach everywhere on the field.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_01]: OK.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: He has to fix that.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: Bigger things.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_01]: And this is where I'm going to get a little bit negative.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I already said Kelab Douglas has to come back.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: Stop playing DJ Herman, uh, it was evident in the game.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think he hurts the team more than he helps it.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think he, he should be in in a glass case that says break glass in case we're going to run a lead.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and that's pretty much it.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_01]: Play Dulcitch and Kasmarik more.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_01]: You look like a better offense.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: You just do.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: And if you have to throw it to those guys, throw it to those guys.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_01]: but become a 12% offense, even become an 11% offense and run the ball with all you Gordon.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think those are the immediate fixes.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_01]: What do you have?
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think, uh, so Malik Willis, what he does need to say, you touched on it is, it's, it's, but, uh, his footwork is deteriorating as we go on along this year.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_02]: And it's, it's, it's a bad, it's a bad trend and it needs to stop and needs to, it needs to get control of it.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, people think that I'm not going to criticize Malik Willis.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_02]: Now, that's not true at all.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: His footwork is, um, his footwork is, is going to pot.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_02]: And it, it seems like it's
- 40:08[SPEAKER_02]: might even be getting worse as the season goes on, which is really concerning.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: So, that's for starters.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: He needs to do that.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_02]: The whole decision-making timing, things like that, yes, he does need to play on time.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_02]: No, he has not played on time in every one of these games.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think probably half of them, he has.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's the thing that you have to keep in mind that is we're going from to it to Malik Willis.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_02]: Malik Willis is a certain kind of quarterback in terms of his timing and holding the ball that you see out there with like Lamar Jackson, Caleb Williams, you know, like Patrick Pahomes, guys like that in terms of their timing.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: Going from Tua to that is like, you know, when you got in the airport and you're on one of those people movers and then you get off, you know, like it's different, right?
- 41:06[SPEAKER_02]: To his timing has to be, you know, just absolutely above normal for for reasons because of his physical deficiencies.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_02]: And so you know, Malik Wallace is trying to use those physical that those physically superior traits of his.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: And one of the ways that you do that is by pushing the boundaries of how long you can hold the ball and then get the ball down the field like that's that is that is a thing that and, you know, you can talk about it, but it's also one of the reasons that we're almost there or we are there sometimes on the big place.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that what they need to fix is a side from a leaks footwork.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_02]: is first down.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_02]: First down is pretty terrible in this offense right now and they need to get that right, whether that's going away from 21 personnel, which is where you're going to see a lot of that for you're going to see it all first down the 21 personnel with DJ Herman, right.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to see that a lot on first down.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe it means having a different plan, but I don't think through there, yeah, I don't think Bobby Slookes gonna suddenly find 12 personnel in his in his in his play sheet because so far they have hardly ever used it.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's it's really count count the number of times that they use it in a game on one hand.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think that you're probably not likely to get that, but they do need to fix first down,
- 42:46[SPEAKER_02]: And then they just need to stop finding all the creative ways to make mistakes, you know, to to get a call, a play called back to, you know, step out of bounds can't get lined up, you know, things like can't find the ball in the sun can't, you know, all these things.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: And then Caleb Douglas does have to come back because some of these plays, I know they're looking different if Caleb Douglas is running that route instead of a five foot 10 inch player.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_02]: And that's just, I'm not trying to criticize anybody, Kayla and Kevin Coleman, it's just, you know, six foot four is different from five foot 10.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_02]: And, and, you know, he's faster to, frankly, Caleb Douglas.
- 43:27[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, the offense does need to get there get something sorted out, particularly on first down.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_02]: I'm looking forward to see whether they really have third and short figured out, though, short yardage.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_02]: So far they, I think they do so far, but also there are times that I think that the approach is still a little bit too complex or too complicated from what it needs to be strictly and and so I'll be watching that going forward.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, and as far as the the running backs, I thought I'll leave Gordon, yes, they was running really well.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_01]: He was strong.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and and people asked me like, you know, so it's a fantasy question, like, well, you know, now that a chance gone, who do you like?
- 44:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, well,
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: something always seems to happen to jail right for whatever reason and jail rights ever since he got here have you noticed that jail right whenever he's gotten here and they've made him part of a group and he has like four five carries he doesn't seem all that interested
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: But when he's been given the ball, it's only been given the ball twice in two games.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: Like as the Patriots, he ran for I.G.D.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: yards on like 15 Cares and against the Jets.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: He ran for 130 yards.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_01]: Every other game, he kind of just slinks away and gets in his forgotten in the box score.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, he doesn't particularly play well as part of a group.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_01]: All the Gordon, I think it's a better player in that regard.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_01]: So I like him, I like him going forward.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I like what this offense is going to look like, running the football going forward for all the Gordon.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm optimistic there.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on to the defense a bit.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_01]: Jacob Rodriguez, like 18 tackles, like, come on.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: And I saw somebody on the floor,
- 45:24[SPEAKER_02]: according to PSF.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's also somebody say, how many impact plays?
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, he had a stop is a legitimate stat, right?
- 45:36[SPEAKER_01]: A stop suggests an unsuccessful offensive play.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: So if you get a stop, it's a good thing.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's a run under four yards, okay?
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: All of those are good things.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's an incomplete past that you
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: I thought, look, this guy's on his way to start him.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, it's four weeks, all right?
- 46:01[SPEAKER_01]: And he's playing like this already.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not like he's playing a bunch of slapsticks.
- 46:05[SPEAKER_01]: His best game has been against Patrick Mahomes in company.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm optimistic on Jacob Rodriguez.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm optimistic on the entire rookie class, but I'm going to give you one, I'm asking what you saw on this guy.
- 46:19[SPEAKER_01]: Chris Johnson has turned a corner.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: He has quietly put together two really good games in a row.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_01]: What are your thoughts?
- 46:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think he has, he has turned a corner.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was interesting that Jeff Halflay and speaking about him today.
- 46:33[SPEAKER_02]: He said to really emphasize that Chris Johnson is to him and his mind
- 46:40[SPEAKER_02]: a really, you know, he's going to be a really good slot, like he has in mind that he's going to be an excellent excellent slot and he almost, you know, he talked about his ability to play outside and how rare it is that that, you know, you can go back and forth between those things, but at the same time.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_02]: I, it's sort of like how we talk about Kaden Proctor and and when they might be thinking not us, but they might be thinking that Kaden Proctor is sort of like a rob hunt in that he can either be a special guard or a good tackle like you know, like like that's I think I kind of got those vise from Zach Yencer when he spoke last week.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff Affley might say about Chris Johnson, I think he can be a special slot and a good outside very perimeter corner.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I felt that that was interesting, but he is playing a lot better, a lot better.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_02]: You want, you know, a long way over the course of four weeks from being
- 47:50[SPEAKER_02]: You know, to just trying to bullseye him over and over again, to to where he is right now and and that is that is a pretty remarkable, you know, testament to his ability to, you know, fight through it and not get down about it not not start questioning himself not start, you know, all these things and.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_02]: And wow, you know, by the end of the year, we could be talking about Chris Johnson as, you know, just as much of a hit as Jacob Rodriguez.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_02]: And, um, but I think that, I think that the communication, the consistency that they've put about there and the sheer number of steps play 240 snaps nap like, you know, that's, that's not nothing.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_02]: Some guys get that in a year, right?
- 48:40[SPEAKER_02]: And, um, and so.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_02]: The consistency they're putting out there, the communication, starting to look better.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think that they're starting to get that communication and leadership at the re-levels now.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: Would Zach Sealer up front?
- 48:54[SPEAKER_02]: And Jeff Haffley talked about it today.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_02]: I'm glad he actually brought this up, too, because he talks about how he looks to Zach Sealer, to set, he was asked a very specific question about, how do these guys decide how to rush every single snap?
- 49:11[SPEAKER_02]: is it dealers choice just, you know, get up there and do whatever you think?
- 49:15[SPEAKER_02]: Is it, is it, is it where, you know, no, it's a, it's all play call, like all or is it, you know, gain plan, you know, tape study, what works against it, you know, some combination with about halfway said it's like, you know, kind of a combination, it's definitely not just going up the line and dealers choice, but it is, it can be a call from the sideline, it can be.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_02]: somebody coordinating them on the defensive line and that's somebody is axiom or a parent.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, hopefully.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, he talked about it today.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, hopefully Austin Clark like he equated it to like sending in a signal to a picture.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like a we're throwing the slider inside right here.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like Austin Clark will tell Zach.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, we're doing this.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_01]: And Zach will convey it to the to the defensive line.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's right.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_02]: But but halfway was very also very clear that that only happens some of the time, you know, the rest of the time, it's on Zach to call it for everybody almost, you know, like what what's going on, what they're doing to coordinate that.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_02]: And that's that's what I think that people like sort of have to keep in mind at the beginning of the year when he's surrounded by all these new players like all these, you know, and this has happened a couple of years in a row now every time every time we reset the year, he surrounded by all new players again.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_02]: And, and so every time it's a process of getting you everybody on the same page again, and they're starting to get it and you could see it.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that that's really interesting.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_02]: So then you got the second level Jacob Rodriguez is obviously coordinating not just the whole defense with the linebackers unit.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: with Jordan Brooks and Willie Gay when he gets on the field.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_02]: And then in the back end, you're starting to get, another back end coordination can't just be one guy because of the spacing and the size.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_02]: It's communication between this side and these two guys, it's communication between this side and these two guys.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_02]: So you need like multiple guys in that secondary.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_02]: And fortunately, we're starting to see with Chris Johnson, the 240 steps that he's already,
- 51:38[SPEAKER_02]: in just four weeks is paying off and the same thing with Michael Taff to I think if you're really watching what he's doing from an IQ standpoint.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_02]: it's beautiful.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_02]: It's like the what he recognizes and then will come up to the line of skirmish and, you know, adjust this guy's brush or, you know, something like that, like what he sees and then he knows he can do in order to put the defense in a bad spot.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to end up being Jeff Halfley's kind of avatar on the field in the secondary.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_02]: So you have Zach Sealer up front Jacob Rodriguez at the second level, Michael Taff and the third level, but plus also, you know, Chris Johnson, because you have to get all those guys on each side communicating with each other.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's really a beautiful thing taking shape and I can't wait to see more of it, you know, more of it going forward because they're starting to get they're not getting those communication miscuses anymore.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_02]: Those those bum coverages.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, sometimes.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_02]: Jason Marshall that had a bad one early on in the game I thought, but sometimes, but still, you know, they're really getting on the stick.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's something to be said for the dolphin defense is the one that's had the most success against that Kansas City offense can't say he just just hung 30 on the Raiders in Vegas.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, throwing all over the lot.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_01]: And running it all over the place.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: Against us, it was a slog for them.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_01]: They had five empty drives.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, in the second half, empty meaning five punts, four punts, four punts, one on downs and one intersection.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, that's just something that the offense has to eventually just take advantage of.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like you got to start, you know, making plays when the defense is just handing you the ball.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, I could see the finished product on defenseman,
- 53:38[SPEAKER_01]: When the season started, you're thinking, my god, man, we still need four starters on this defense.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're not really thinking like that.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_01]: You're thinking like, yeah, we could use like probably two or three starters, you know, but we don't need to have massive investment here, you know?
- 53:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_02]: Well, especially, and we haven't even mentioned Chop Robinson and what he did in this game, which was just fabulous.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_02]: You look pretty fabulous.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_01]: Fabulous.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_02]: It was like seeing a guy take, you know, three steps in one game.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's that's it was it was and I'm of the belief that A. I thought he was pretty good last week against the chiefs.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_02]: One, when you're coverage is so shoddy that per cousins is getting the ball do is first off is first read constantly in two seconds 2.5 seconds you're really not going to get that much going in past rush so you didn't really get very many opportunities and of the times laughing at count of like 13 real opportunities and some of those even don't count as the ball will still out in two seconds.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_02]: you know actually impact the play in the Raiders game so he it wasn't that bad at all in the Raiders game it just it got better against the chiefs when he came back from the concussion and then it got really good against the Vikings against a really good pair of tackles.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_02]: Christian Daxon, Brian Arne, O'Neill, are an excellent pair of tackles.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Daxon and you, he's like the new arms that, well, yeah, I mean, you worry about, we took a good question in the game, evidently.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_02]: But so, yeah, you worry about him from an injury standpoint, but these are good, they were on the field and they were really good tackles.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_02]: And also those tight ends are no, you know, they're, they're no slouchy.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_02]: They're Hawkinson
- 55:45[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, these got the edges that having this performance against the Vikings was a really big step forward, like a massive step forward, because it was not just good pressure.
- 56:00[SPEAKER_02]: Against a quarterback who is a little shaky ground right now in Kyla Murray, it was against really good tackles, they were they were obliterating really good offensive linemen and tight ends and blocking schemes.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's really encouraging.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_02]: If they can take that forward, then holy cow.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_02]: you know, by the end of this year, I mean, what happens when we get trained more in Kyle Lewis back to, you know, because we always talk about Willie Gave being at the scene in the crime when there's a, when there's a mistake or something like that.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I love Willie Gave and I love his energy and I love his athleticism.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, there is some of that aspect of he's at the scene in the crime a lot when there's been a cover or when there's been some kind of bust or miscuse or something like that.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_02]: What happens when we get trained more in there?
- 56:50[SPEAKER_02]: What happens when we get Kyle Lewis in there, you know, able to mix in some of that big nickel stuff?
- 56:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we know they want to use.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be really, it's going to be really fascinating to see like the last month of the year versus the first month of this year.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_02]: It just has a potential to be so different, so incredibly different.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_02]: That's why it's hard to tell people to be patient.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_02]: You know, because they don't have the patience, but but it's like devaluation in some ways on some of these guys hasn't even begun yet.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm the situation is gonna come during the back half.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm as optimistic as you can get over a or in 14 and and I'll say I'll tell you one thing that that went unnoticed in in this game Justin Jefferson is a superstar with a capital S, right?
- 57:40[SPEAKER_01]: But Jordan Anderson Jordan Anderson is a star with like not a capital S, but he's a legit star
- 57:46[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, is a jail and water star.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like he's in that tier like he's a really, really good player.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_01]: The attention in Miami plate, but, you know, paid to him to actually erase him for the most part in this game.
- 57:59[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that did a very, very nice job and that's what they did a lot of split safety, right?
- 58:04[SPEAKER_02]: This was more split safety than I mean, Jeff Haffley talked about it.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think that Kevin O'Connell.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_02]: said that made a joke when he when he went to halfway after the game and they shook hands he made a joke he's like I think you dropped another split safety out of your pocket like on or something like that like because they played split safety so I wonder about that going forward frankly because if if this defense starts to look better because of split safety then
- 58:32[SPEAKER_02]: go with it.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the only thing they could do is they couldn't handle Hawkinson, but they just don't have the personnel right now to handle.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_02]: They couldn't handle Hawkinson, but you're talking about like what 78 plays and still only allowed how how are many points on the 78 plays and you guys grow help from special teams and and hardly any help from offense.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_02]: not criticizing even with Hawkins and going off having a great day.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to criticize the defensive performance.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be stupid and I'll be silly.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:05[SPEAKER_01]: We want to call it right here on Thursday.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_01]: We will preview Bengals, Dolphins, that that one I think should be fun because the game is equalizing as we speak because I don't know if you saw the the Jamar Chase injury, there's no chance in hell.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's playing I'm I'm calling it okay breaking news.
- 59:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna break news on this podcast.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_01]: Jamar Chase is not playing on something and if he is,
- 59:29[SPEAKER_01]: Tutank of all I should sue the end of all, okay?
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: Because that did not look good.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_01]: What happened to Jamar Chase in that game?
- 59:37[SPEAKER_01]: And T. Higgins took an injury as well.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_01]: Later on in that game.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's day to day, but Jamar Chase, I really don't think Jamar Chase should be playing.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, when your head goes in three different directions and then gets bounced off the floor like a basketball, that's not a good thing ever it was it was bad Yeah, it was violent.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_01]: That was a violent concussion like two was first concussion against Cincinnati By the way, that field right
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_01]: It happened on that field, too.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_01]: So, right?
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_01]: Since the 90 was at home.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they got to just something about that field, because there's some really violent hits that happen on that since the 90 field.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_01]: And it's actually the only unique field in the NFL.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's the only field that is completely unique to every other field in the NFL, which is odd.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_01]: But when you know how the Browns operate, meaning Mike Brown and company, you know.
- 1:00:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but that's it adding.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_02]: Listen, or yeah, I mean, you know, that's that's them though.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I'd love like the hits for, do you see the hit, the hit, the hit that to a ton of, like, I don't care what field that was on, like that could have been on a bed, that could have been on a bed anywhere to end up with a concussion, like, you know, like, and this one went tomorrow chase is like, yeah, I get it, I get the concussion on that one.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_02]: I certainly do.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_02]: It was rough.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_02]: It was a rough.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_02]: It was a rough.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_02]: It was a rough one.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to call it Thursday.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to preview that game and man of the offense could just get it together just a little bit.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_01]: I could feel a little optimism for that game because I think the game is equalizing personnel wise.
- 1:01:13[SPEAKER_01]: Not that we're better.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_02]: This is this is I think you're right.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think that this is I think of the season like Old Hermed words used to talk about in quarters, you know four games at
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_02]: the first quarter was always going to be bad.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_02]: It was always going to be real bad for the dolphins.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_02]: All these rookies taken up 30% of the snaps, 40% of a roster, you know, we know all about the active payroll and the records that they're chattering in some ways that way in between that and the rookie involvement.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_02]: It was always going to look bad.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_02]: New coaches establishing new system with new players with all rookies.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what do you expect there?
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, and then in addition to that, it's like, oh, yeah, and three are the four are going to be on the road.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_02]: And all four of them are going to be against undefeated teams.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_02]: All four of them are going to be, you know, and the only the only one that has lost now is the Raiders, and that's because two of those teams had to play one another, so somebody was going to get a loss.
- 1:02:12[SPEAKER_02]: The Raiders and the Chiefs played one another.
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, and it wasn't like they were fraud and got beat by four.
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, it was a good game.
- 1:02:22[SPEAKER_02]: It was a good game and they look good, they look good in the process, right?
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_02]: So, so I mean, the dolphins have without a doubt played the
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_02]: right.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_02]: So, and that's in addition to everything that I said, a 40% of a roster, new coaches, installing new systems with rookies, 30% rookies and all that stuff.
- 1:02:44[SPEAKER_02]: Always going to look bad.
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_02]: Frankly, I'm shocked how well they've played in some of these games.
- 1:02:50[SPEAKER_02]: I am absolutely staggered how well that they've played in a couple of these games.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_02]: So that first quarter was always going to look bad, but the second quarter is where you're going to want to see progress and that's this that starts now with this bangles game because they're two and two they're not in fallible they're coming into your house.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_02]: So it's different you're going to want to see a step forward you're going to want to see a step forward in this game and if there isn't then we get to we get to piss them on and complain.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, all right, and that'll be on Thursday where we'll put some money complaint, but I got to share something with you and I'm going to talk about this on on the three WIPCCFB show on Wednesday, but I had to share this with you because I thought it was the funniest thing I saw.
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_01]: How much college football did you watch Saturday?
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: I watched quite a bit.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, did you, did you, did you happen to put your eyes on Colorado Texas tech?
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_02]: That what I did not watch.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Colorado had a lead deep into the third quarter.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then Texas tech just blew up all over Colorado.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_01]: But there was a sequence in that game where Colorado sent out nine players, sorry, they sent out eight players.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, for a field goal block, eight players.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_01]: So they call time out naturally, right?
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, holy shit, we only have eight guys out here, right?
- 1:04:09[SPEAKER_01]: So they sent out 11, right?
- 1:04:12[SPEAKER_01]: Right before the snack, two players ran off.
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_01]: They ran the play with nine players.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
- 1:04:18[SPEAKER_01]: Feel good though.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_01]: So the other team did not have the presence.
- 1:04:21[SPEAKER_01]: Texas tech did not have the presence of mine to just fake it.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe our special team's maybe our special team's coordinator's paying attention.
- 1:04:28[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to do the same thing.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it thinks it's a good idea.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 1:04:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think Chris Taylor should try it.
- 1:04:33[SPEAKER_01]: Just play to try and play with eight.
- 1:04:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're making no more different.
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_02]: Can't be worse than when they're playing with 11.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a fireable offense.
- 1:04:43[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, if they're still playing like this on the on special teams At the midseason, okay.
- 1:04:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not one of these people like the fire people like I don't know if you saw speak in the college Do you see the color of state guy color of state head coat fired his defense a coordinator halftime?
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_02]: I did not but I Well, I thought I thought I might have heard something about that actually.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and they were and they asked the why wasn't your DC out there on like not relieve them of his duties
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so yeah, Chris Taver, don't buy house, we'll talk about it on Thursday, but
