- 0:05Greenland, Trump and sinful occupation.
- 0:09Welcome to Mark and Pete. This episode we look at
- 0:12Greenland geopolitics and Donald Trump once again being laughed
- 0:17at. Yes, this is Mark and Pete 2
- 0:19blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:24On thin ice, if hell freezes over, the devil will skate.
- 0:30Yet heat from a hot head melts it at fast rate.
- 0:33So stay cool and calm and just twirl a Figure 8.
- 0:37Then show you're in control and won't slip to your fate.
- 0:42Well, yes indeed. Well, Greenland, Denmark, what
- 0:46is your next move? Yes, Donald Trump's push to
- 0:49acquire Greenland is gaining backlash not just in fact from
- 0:53Republicans in Congress, but also from Denmark and many
- 0:58European countries. Well, this is really around the
- 1:00focus of Greenland, which has grown into a more broader
- 1:04discussion over Trump's administration with the use
- 1:06effectively to have unilateral use of military force along with
- 1:11diplomatic and economic coercion.
- 1:14Mr. Pete, I say that this is now potentially A hotbed, dare I
- 1:19say, in a very cool part of the world.
- 1:23What say you about what Donald Trump is trying to achieve here?
- 1:26Well, we're talking first specifically about what he wants
- 1:32to achieve with having control over Greenland.
- 1:36Well, he may not make it the 51st state, but having complete
- 1:41control is what he's after. It seems to me an obvious, a
- 1:47sort of a no brainer for geopolitics at the moment.
- 1:51We in Europe, we in Britain need a strong America to take control
- 1:57of that region. Why?
- 1:58Well, if you, if you don't look at an Atlas or better at a globe
- 2:02as you can see it better. If you do, it's not so obvious
- 2:05why it's so important. Strategically, it's very
- 2:08important. It's all part of the same sort
- 2:11of landmass as the it's part of the Americas more than more than
- 2:16Europe. It's certainly part of the
- 2:18Arctic landmass, yes. Interestingly, one of its
- 2:21islands in in green and there's a little island off it which is
- 2:26half owned by Canada. So there's actually a land
- 2:28border with Canada there, but that's just a small little bit
- 2:32of trivia. What's interesting about
- 2:34Greenland is its position means that as China has ambitions to
- 2:40come over the pole to get to Europe much quicker and as the
- 2:44the ice is predicted to melt there to allow that to happen,
- 2:49Greenland will be a good strategic base on the way.
- 2:52Certainly flights would he go over it and in fact, Donald
- 2:55Trump will know about him very well because if he flew from New
- 2:58York over to Asia anywhere like that, he'd go over Greenland.
- 3:01So it's it's a it's a very good strategic position to have China
- 3:07itself did a few years ago attempt to buy up the port there
- 3:13in in Greenland port as in the seafaring area, not drink.
- 3:19And just to clear that up for you, Mr. Mark now and America
- 3:24had to pressure the. Bottle.
- 3:26Yeah, the US government had to pressure the Danish government,
- 3:30which is in charge of Greenland, to stop it happening where they
- 3:33don't want to have to go through all that.
- 3:35So strategically you're talking about the IT being good
- 3:39strategic position. Yes, militarily, there's an air
- 3:42base. They're all very important, but
- 3:45just first of all, I I think this is probably the main reason
- 3:50for America wanting it and Trump pushing for it, is that
- 3:54strategic use in terms of trade routes.
- 3:57Yeah. Well, there's also something
- 3:59else as well. One word, minerals.
- 4:02Well, let's be honest, Greenland is packed with them.
- 4:05We won't go into all of them, but again, that's another aspect
- 4:08of this. So if you think about the
- 4:10strategic positioning of Greenland, yes, but also the
- 4:14resources that it offers. And I think that that's rather
- 4:17crucial for a world that is so devoid of minerals.
- 4:21We've seen that in the the gameplay with Ukraine in terms
- 4:25of the minerals that Trump is trying to sort of negotiate on
- 4:29behalf of Ukraine and maybe others.
- 4:30But the fact of the matter is the world needs those very
- 4:35valuable resources. So I think that there's another
- 4:38thing as well. Now Trump has really made some
- 4:41claim about wanting to buy Canada, Greenland, many other
- 4:45places. Is this something where it's
- 4:50just a distraction? Because maybe really what he's
- 4:53trying to do is, and we've seen this, you know, with Venezuela,
- 4:56you know, where he's sort of gone in.
- 4:57He's taken over and he's taken, you know, particular tankers
- 5:01with oil. You know, naturally he's already
- 5:05extracted certain leaders. Can we expect that maybe he'll
- 5:08go even further? Well, I, I think you're right in
- 5:12saying it. It's part of his distraction the
- 5:14the true real use of Greenland. We've we've just talked about
- 5:22those two areas, minerals and trade routes.
- 5:26There is the, and I mentioned the, the air base there.
- 5:30The the air that air base really isn't enough for how Trump sees
- 5:35security for the US. So an extension basically of his
- 5:38golden Dome as he calls it's similar to the Iron Dome in
- 5:41Israel. Being able to shoot down rockets
- 5:44that are that are coming over is part is part of that.
- 5:48But there's you can go further than that in terms of PR, which
- 5:52is what Trump is really a master of.
- 5:56Yes, it can. It could well be a distraction
- 5:58for other things that he's doing, For example, aiming for
- 6:05regime change without being accused of doing it in the Iran,
- 6:10you know, without being responsible because you want the
- 6:12rebellion within Iran to be the people who take responsibility
- 6:16for it. But supporting it and trying to
- 6:19get prepared for possible invasion.
- 6:22There certainly being military strikes or strikes or possibly
- 6:25an abduction of the leadership there.
- 6:28Yeah, it needs a big distraction, people getting all
- 6:30angry. But more than a distraction,
- 6:34it's it's APR exercise in the about who Trump is.
- 6:37He's the madman, but not just where small, not small, but less
- 6:44powerful countries like Venezuela are afraid of the
- 6:47Europeans are scared of him. That's the that's the impression
- 6:50he's trying to give such that he can get his way in military
- 6:54conflicts like like possibly in Iran, but in Ukraine as well.
- 7:00You know, he's building up this reputation of being someone who
- 7:04is. Yeah, maybe he's irascible and
- 7:07unpredictable. Yes, but he really does do what
- 7:10he says, that people are scared of him, so scared of him and
- 7:13therefore America. So it's, I, I believe it's all
- 7:16part of brand building. Well, I think it may be.
- 7:19And in fact, as we have already seen, interestingly, that Keir
- 7:22Starmer, who you know, has been the leader of the United
- 7:27Kingdom, seems to have very little influence.
- 7:29If you look at the history of the United Kingdom's
- 7:32relationship with the United States, it's been a lot closer.
- 7:35Whereas unfortunately, in this particular occasion, it couldn't
- 7:39be further from the truth. But whilst I agree with you in
- 7:42terms of the the sort of the brand building, as you say, the
- 7:45man who is almost unpredictable in his own mind, it comes back
- 7:50to one final point in my opinion, which is what about on
- 7:53the home front? Because has Donald Trump got
- 7:56enough Republican support to pass these sort of measures
- 7:59through the Chamber of Congress? And I think that's really
- 8:02important, isn't it? Because it clearly he can play
- 8:04that game externally for those international leaders.
- 8:07But it's on the home front. Do you think he has enough
- 8:10strength? Well, this may be why he's
- 8:15trying to push it through because in Congress and the
- 8:19House of Representatives, he at the moment the Republicans have
- 8:23a majority of 1. So it's very difficult to get
- 8:27things very. Difficult.
- 8:29So it may be that he's trying to get it done quickly.
- 8:32So yeah, all decisions are made before they possibly lose
- 8:35control of the house. But I actually think there is a
- 8:38bigger strategy at play here because it all plays in
- 8:40together. You see, just moving away from
- 8:42Greenland for a moment, although, as I said, Greenland
- 8:45plays into it. The the taking of Maduro from
- 8:50Venezuela and the taking of the oil there.
- 8:54You know, they say Trump says, well, America's not going to
- 8:56actually, he's not stealing the oil, obviously.
- 8:59Heaven forfend. No, what they're doing is
- 9:01they're going to sell it and give the money to Venezuela to
- 9:04build themselves up. Yeah, but that still means they
- 9:06have the oil and it does mean overall that you can bring down
- 9:10oil prices, the fuel prices in America this year, well, well
- 9:16before the November elections. So that could give him actually
- 9:21an increase in Congress, which means he can get the rest of his
- 9:23agenda through. I think he's joined up thinking
- 9:26and, and, and here here's the point, you know, the, some of
- 9:30the EU leaders and in fact, other commentators, particularly
- 9:34those on the left, are really laughing at Trump and ridiculing
- 9:38him. I mean, he did once accidentally
- 9:40say Iceland instead of Greenland.
- 9:42But we've all done that, haven't we?
- 9:44But you know, they, yes, it seems that their, their hatred
- 9:49for both means that they can't see that there could possibly a
- 9:53strategy be a strategy. It must be that he's a lunatic.
- 9:56Well, look, as I'll hand back to you as you close out, do you
- 10:00think that Greenland will become basically a hotbed or do you
- 10:04think that this political issue will eventually cool down?
- 10:09What I think is that Trump will get his way, the EU will is
- 10:14heading on its way to irrelevance anyway, and they
- 10:18will kowtow to Trump and America's demands because they
- 10:23are the real power. You see, strategic, strategic
- 10:26thinking like Trump's looks a bit rude now to European eyes,
- 10:31but that in the long term, this use of power to bring about
- 10:37hegemonies such that you can have peace is actually the
- 10:41wisest action of all.
