- 0:00Parish Avayaki, Madras rabbit the last year of the week.
- 0:04So we know that Yaakov says to yourself, I'll now take
- 0:07perennial Mitzrayim. So we looked at this earlier in
- 0:10a previous year, but now the Madras is asking why would
- 0:13Yaakov object even to a temporary internment in
- 0:17Mitzrayim in Egypt? And then later when they would
- 0:21get out, he would then be brought to the land of Israel
- 0:23and be buried along with his ancestors, says the Madras Lama.
- 0:28Why is that so to #1 Because the fate of the land of Egypt is to
- 0:33be stricken with lice. The year Maraka shot photography
- 0:37and I got a swarm inside my body, says Yaakov.
- 0:40Were I to be buried that lefika? I'll not take Bahraini Bermitz
- 0:44rhyme. What on earth #2 Did you get the
- 0:49joke there? The earth where the lice came
- 0:51from doesn't matter. Davarka name.
- 0:54Abika Shark. Why did you not want to be
- 0:57buried? Dimitrium Zara.
- 1:01Would it make an object of idolatry?
- 1:04Make him an object of idolatry for justice?
- 1:07Punishment is exacted from the worship of an idol.
- 1:10So is punishment exacted from the object of worship.
- 1:14Dictif it says in the pasuk overhaul Elohim it's Rayim and
- 1:18against all the gods of Egypt assess Fatim.
- 1:23I will execute judgement. Let's skip in the Madras to one
- 1:30more one more answer. Dava Yaakov Ami Yaakov said
- 1:35Shilohi padu be Hamid swims. It is that so that the Egyptians
- 1:38will not be redeemed through me. They bow to sheep and I'm
- 1:43likened to a sheep and it says Seb Puzra Israel verse in the
- 1:47book of Jeremiah Israel is like a scattered sheep.
- 1:50And further regarding Egypt, it's written, I share Basar
- 1:54Hamorim Basaram, whose flesh is the flesh of donkeys.
- 1:58And it says in the pasuk or Patak Hamaritif the first of a
- 2:03donkey will you will redeem with the sheep.
- 2:07So they're going to be said to the donkey of Egypt will be
- 2:10redeemed by the sheep which represents Yaakov.
- 2:13Have they Alnaty Bahraini but Mithraim do not allow me to be
- 2:19buried. Do not bury me in the land of
- 2:23Egypt. Obviously, the next part of the
- 2:27Midrash is going to play in the flip side for Lama Kolharovat of
- 2:31Imam Khabibin Kurat Eretz Israel.
- 2:34We'll have to leave that for another time.
- 2:35Why they specifically wanted to be buried in the land of Israel.
- 2:39But let's try and unpack this part of the Madras first.
- 2:43So the first one is is the one. I don't really yet have a good
- 2:47hold on this particular midrash. We know according to most
- 2:50commentators dans Vandea Kinim, the first, the third plague
- 2:55Kinim was not didn't bother the Jewish people.
- 2:59Yes, there are commentaries that understand that the first 3
- 3:02plagues did affect the Jewish people, but the mainstream
- 3:05thought in this midrash that they didn't affect the Jewish
- 3:07people. So we know that Yaakov wouldn't
- 3:10have been affected. But the idea was it didn't
- 3:13affect the Jewish people through a miracle.
- 3:16And Yaakov is saying I don't want the miracle to have to be
- 3:19performed for me. What this suggests about the
- 3:23relationship between body and soul after death and the
- 3:27relationship between them and the body feeling things is
- 3:30beyond my understanding right now.
- 3:32Leave it. If you understand this matter is
- 3:33better than me, then please be in touch.
- 3:36The second one that you didn't want to become an object of
- 3:40worship gives highlights an idea from the ancient world.
- 3:44You know, it would make sense you would worship anything that
- 3:47brought you benefit. When Yaakov arrived in Egypt, we
- 3:52know from the rabbis that the famine stopped.
- 3:55It was supposed to last seven years, the plenty seven years of
- 3:58famine. And the famine stopped only in
- 4:01the second year. The rabbis tell us the waters of
- 4:04the Nile were blessed because of Yaakov.
- 4:06They would overflow and then, then they would irrigate the
- 4:10surrounding fields. And they recognized Yaakov as a
- 4:13holy person and therefore it was most likely this is what he what
- 4:19he would happen to him after death.
- 4:20He would be worshipped. Think about how easily we might
- 4:23come to doing that with somebody who we see has brought us
- 4:26benefits and how we might overly worship them, perhaps not in a
- 4:31religious sense, but maybe emotionally as well.
- 4:34And then finally we saw this last understanding which plays
- 4:38on various Persukim and how Yaakov is compared to the sheep
- 4:42and not wanting to be redeemed for the donkey of Egypt.
- 4:47And had Egypt, Egyptian society, the Egyptians themselves been
- 4:53forgiven for their sins, what would have happened?
- 4:56They would never have suffered the 10 plagues and everything.
- 5:00Instead of suffering the templates, God would have put it
- 5:02in Pharaoh's heart to let them go immediately and things would
- 5:05have been very, very different. And perhaps the people we needed
- 5:08to become, we wouldn't have become.
- 5:11Which again suggests that the whole script of the 10 plagues
- 5:15and the experiences we had, whether we understand it to be
- 5:18that the first of the three plagues did affect our people or
- 5:20not, or the general experience of witnessing the plagues was so
- 5:23fundamental to our experiences developing as a Jewish people
- 5:27that Yaakov could not have remained even for temporary
- 5:30moments in the land of Egypt. Have a wonderful day.
