- 0:14In this crazy, chaotic world, where's your hope?
- 0:17What keeps you grounded and unshaken? Well, today
- 0:21I'm going to tell you how to get that kind of
- 0:23hope by sharing the incredible testimony of a
- 0:26good friend whose faith in the face of dire circumstances
- 0:30deeply inspired me. Stay with me. You're going
- 0:33to be encouraged today. Real hope isn't wishful
- 0:37thinking. It's something scripture says you can
- 0:40build your whole life on. Today on Living on
- 0:43the Edge, Chip Ingram continues our series called
- 0:46Free at Last, How to Break Out of a Destructive
- 0:49Lifestyle. Remember, you can catch up on any
- 0:51message you've missed at livingontheedge .org.
- 0:55Chip opens today's lesson from Philippians chapter
- 0:58one, but he starts somewhere unexpected with
- 1:01the story of his friend, Kevin. a young father
- 1:04who journaled his way through a stage four cancer
- 1:07diagnosis. What Kevin discovered changed how
- 1:10Chip understands hope itself. Here's his message
- 1:14titled, Understanding the Power of Hope. Kevin
- 1:18shared what it's like to be a young dad with
- 1:20four kids, stage four lymphoma, and battling,
- 1:26wondering the real challenges of, am I going
- 1:30to live or am I going to die, and how am I going
- 1:32to go through this? I read every time on CaringBridge
- 1:36as Kevin journaled through this process. And
- 1:39I kind of followed him with the ups and the downs
- 1:41and, you know, this prognosis and then that one
- 1:45and then how he's feeling. And I wanted to share
- 1:49with you the four things that I learned from
- 1:53going through this journey with Kevin that I
- 1:55hope will be helpful for you. The first thing
- 1:58I learned was that facing... Our mortality is
- 2:02both scary and clarifying. As I would read his
- 2:06journal, it just reminded me that I'm gonna die.
- 2:10It reminded me of just life is really short.
- 2:14It reminded me of the battle and the victory
- 2:16that we went through with cancer with my wife.
- 2:19Just reminded me, gosh, the second thing was
- 2:22that very few things in life matter very much.
- 2:27Just as I would read these journal entries and,
- 2:30you know, he wasn't worried about remodeling
- 2:32the kitchen or whether he's going to get a raise.
- 2:34You know, he wasn't concerned about, is he going
- 2:36to get 49er tickets? His fantasy football team
- 2:39wasn't really a big issue for him, right? And
- 2:42the same thing, it just brought back all those
- 2:44memories that when we went through cancer, how
- 2:46projects, demands, what people think, what they
- 2:51don't think, nothing really matters. Life is
- 2:54very, very simple. when you get really, really
- 2:57close to death. The third thing is that as I've
- 3:00listened to Kevin and watched is that C plus
- 3:03P really does equal E. Our circumstances plus
- 3:08our perspective determines our experience. And
- 3:13as you listen, if you read the journals, if you
- 3:15went through it in real time with him, there
- 3:17were ups and downs and he was brutally honest.
- 3:21brutally honest about fears, brutally honest
- 3:23about doubts and struggles, but also it was an
- 3:27unwavering, I'm going to trust God. I believe
- 3:32there's a heaven. I believe the Bible's true.
- 3:34I believe there's God's character. His spirit
- 3:37lives within me. There's a certainty. There's
- 3:39a hope. And I'm going to have an upward focus
- 3:42and an outward focus. And I'm going to use this
- 3:45for God's purposes. Those nurses are going to
- 3:48hear and see. Christ. Other patients are going
- 3:51to hear and see Christ. Not because I've got
- 3:53it in me, but Christ in me. I watched his life
- 3:58prove that. And finally, I think the thing I
- 4:00learned from Kevin is that only an eternal P
- 4:04perspective can produce peace and joy when facing
- 4:08death. I mean, when you look at life through
- 4:12just the lens of now is all there is, I'll tell
- 4:15you what, you cannot. Sustained it. In fact,
- 4:19this wall for me is a lot like life. And these
- 4:22are the circumstances. And you know, sometimes
- 4:24they're great, but sometimes it's a brick wall.
- 4:27And you know, you got a marriage problem here
- 4:29and a singleness and you want to be married here
- 4:31and cancer biopsy here and you lose your job
- 4:34over here and you're clinically depressed over
- 4:36here and you just keep butting against this wall
- 4:39and you're looking for hope and you're looking
- 4:41for hope and you lose it and you lose it and
- 4:43you lose it and you lose it. And after a while,
- 4:45you just give up. And you just start doing stuff
- 4:48that you didn't think you would ever do. Because
- 4:50hope is the oxygen of the soul. If you don't
- 4:54have hope, you die. You can go without food for
- 4:57seven days and water for about three. You can't
- 4:59go without any hope for probably more than three
- 5:02or four minutes. We'll do. So what do you do?
- 5:08Here's what Kevin did. Kevin said, I can't take
- 5:11it. I don't know what's going to happen, so I'm
- 5:14going to rise above my circumstances, and I'm
- 5:18going to look at eternity. That which is seen,
- 5:21temporal circumstances, I can't change. And it's
- 5:25not a picture half full. It's completely full.
- 5:28It's heaven waiting. It's Christ. It's all of
- 5:31his promises. It's a sovereign God. It's this
- 5:34life is not all there is. And I can look at that
- 5:37and I cling to that and it's the anchor of my
- 5:40soul and it gives me the grace and the perspective
- 5:44and the perseverance to keep going. It takes
- 5:50an eternal perspective. Here's the question.
- 5:54How, when life is crashing in, do you develop
- 5:59that eternal perspective that gives you the kind
- 6:02of hope that allows you to go through anything?
- 6:06that allows you not to give up, not to give in,
- 6:09not to get inwardly focused, not become a victim,
- 6:12not blame everybody else, not blame God, but
- 6:15be the kind of person in the midst of, you don't
- 6:18know if you're gonna live or die and there's
- 6:20pain and there's children and there's a wife
- 6:23and there's a concern where nurses wanna come
- 6:25in and go, I don't know what's going on in this
- 6:27room, but we'll hang out here. That's the presence
- 6:31of God. That's the power of God. That's a joy,
- 6:35not a happiness. That's a reality experienced
- 6:37in the midst of crushing circumstances. Well,
- 6:43if you open your notes, we're going to learn
- 6:44the answer to finding that kind of hope. And
- 6:47the answer is in a very simple yet profound word.
- 6:50And it's the key to eternal perspective. And
- 6:53the key word of the lens you need to look at
- 6:56is the lens of hope and the question to ask yourself
- 6:59when you're really struggling is not just where's
- 7:02my focus and not just what's my purpose, but
- 7:05where's my hope? What's my hope rooted in? And
- 7:10by the way, when we use the word hope, English
- 7:13word hope has one meaning. The biblical word
- 7:16hope is a little bit different. When we use the
- 7:18word hope, we often, you know, I hope it doesn't
- 7:21rain. I hope the 49ers win. I hope I get a good
- 7:24job. I hope someday I get married. We use the
- 7:27word hope in a good way, but it's almost wishful
- 7:29thinking. We hope for something positive in the
- 7:33future. It's a good definition. There's nothing
- 7:35wrong with that kind of hope. But that's not
- 7:37the word in the Bible. The word in the Bible
- 7:40for hope is an absolute certainty that you can
- 7:44bank on that will never change. Christ's return
- 7:47is the hope. Heaven is our hope. God's promises
- 7:53are hope. Jesus said that I will give you all
- 7:57the grace you need to get through any situation.
- 8:00It's a hope. In other words, it's the anchor
- 8:03of your soul. Biblical hope isn't a... It's a
- 8:09guarantee of something unseen. The Apostle Paul
- 8:13will later say, that which is seen is temporal.
- 8:18That which is unseen is eternal. And it is both
- 8:24a skill and an act of faith to learn how to look
- 8:29at the unseen hope that sustains you. We pick
- 8:33up the story of the Apostle Paul and it is now
- 8:35his third. Lesson. The context for those that
- 8:40might be just joining us, he's in Rome. He's
- 8:42chained to a Praetorian guard that changes every
- 8:45six hours. It is not a good situation. He's on
- 8:48trial and at the end of the trial, he's either
- 8:51gonna be released and found innocent or he's
- 8:54gonna be found guilty and be executed. And when
- 8:56we pick up the story, he's in the situation where,
- 8:59I don't know what's gonna happen. Imagine more
- 9:04than a little anxiety for most of us. So what's
- 9:07his perspective in facing death? It's crazy.
- 9:12It's joy. It's joy. He actually has a joyful
- 9:17attitude facing death. He has an eternal perspective.
- 9:21Notice in verse 18, it says, yes, and I will
- 9:24continue to rejoice. The question is why and
- 9:28how could any individual, unless they're playing
- 9:30just mind games, how could you have joy? In a
- 9:34terrible situation, you've been betrayed by your
- 9:37friends. There's political issues happening in
- 9:39the church. You're humanly thinking, God, you
- 9:43sent me to go to all the world and instead here
- 9:46I am in this prison. Little did he know that
- 9:48all these letters that he would write would change
- 9:50the course of history. He didn't know that. What?
- 9:55What was it that allowed him? to have this amazing
- 10:00attitude in circumstances that would absolutely
- 10:03crush 99 .9 % of the people. He gives us two
- 10:09reasons in Philippians chapter one, verses 19
- 10:12to 25. Reason number one is that his deliverance
- 10:16is certain. His deliverance is certain. Underline
- 10:22the word deliverance. Follow along as I read,
- 10:26for I know, that this shall turn out for my deliverance.
- 10:30Well, how? Through your prayers and the provision
- 10:33of the spirit of Jesus Christ. According to my
- 10:36earnest expectation and hope that I will not
- 10:39be put to shame in anything, but that with all
- 10:42boldness, Christ, even now as always, will be
- 10:46exalted in my body. Well, how? Whether by life
- 10:50or by death. Paul is completely convinced that
- 10:56he's going to be delivered. Now, I want to do
- 10:59something with you. It's kind of fun. The Apostle
- 11:02Paul, I really like him because he has run -on
- 11:05sentences. Because I have run -on sentences.
- 11:10And the favorite grammatical punctuation in all
- 11:14of the English language for me is a semicolon.
- 11:17That's how you put multiple sentences together
- 11:19and not have the teacher take off. And so I've
- 11:24written the notes in a way so you can see the
- 11:27structure of them. But let me give you just his
- 11:30sentence. And so what I want you to do is, for
- 11:34I know that this will turn out for my deliverance,
- 11:36put a line underneath that. Okay, you got it?
- 11:40And then I want you to skip down where it says,
- 11:44according to my earnest expectation, just underline
- 11:47the word just that. And then I want you to skip
- 11:52down a little bit farther and underline Christ
- 11:55will even now as always be exalted in my body.
- 12:02His simple sentence is, I know that this shall
- 12:07turn out for my deliverance, that Christ will
- 12:10even now as always be exalted in my body. And
- 12:13everything else is the whys, the wherefores,
- 12:16the hows, and all those clauses to explain it.
- 12:20But they're really important. First of all, put
- 12:22a box around the first word that says, for I
- 12:24know. There's two Greek words for know. One is
- 12:27you know by way of experience. Powerful word,
- 12:30but that's not this word. The other word is like
- 12:33you know, like physics. You know that water boils
- 12:37at such and such degrees or two plus two is four.
- 12:40That's this word. In other words, there's empirical
- 12:42facts. Paul says, I have an empirical fact that
- 12:46doesn't change that I will be delivered. and
- 12:49put a box around the word deliverance, we get
- 12:51our word salvation. It means to be delivered
- 12:54out of. In the Old Testament, you know, when
- 12:56the Red Sea parted, they were delivered. So he
- 12:59says, I know for certain I'm going to be delivered
- 13:01that Christ is going to be exalted. I want you
- 13:06to note his perspective on this. He says, there's
- 13:12two reasons why I know I'm going to be delivered.
- 13:16One, is the responsibility of man, and the other
- 13:19is the sovereignty of God. Did you pick it up?
- 13:22He says, I know I'm going to deliver through
- 13:24A, your prayers, and B, the provision of the
- 13:29Spirit of God. You know, despite anybody's theology
- 13:34anywhere, the Apostle Paul actually believed
- 13:36when men and women, ordinary people like us,
- 13:41would come to God earnestly in faith and claim
- 13:44his promises and in our heart at least and get
- 13:47down on our knees and intercede for the life
- 13:50of another person, it actually makes a difference.
- 13:54He's certain of his deliverance. And for the
- 13:57provision, put a circle around the word provision.
- 14:00It's an interesting word. We get our word, are
- 14:04you ready? It's weird. We get our word chorus,
- 14:06you know, like a singing group. And historically,
- 14:09it's kind of fun to give you a little background
- 14:11on this because in the ancient world, if you
- 14:14were a very, very wealthy person in a smaller
- 14:17town, then there was entertainment. And so the
- 14:21theater was very big and they had these outdoor
- 14:23amphitheaters. And if you were very wealthy,
- 14:25it was expected that you would bring a theater
- 14:27group. that you would pay the theater group,
- 14:30that you would rent the amphitheater, and everything
- 14:32that had to happen for their costumes, the group,
- 14:35the entrance, everything, so that you could entertain
- 14:38the city. And it's this word chorus. Over time,
- 14:44it came to mean whatever it takes to pull this
- 14:48thing off, all the provision, the money, the
- 14:52time, the energy, the leadership, everything
- 14:54it takes to... pull something off. That's what
- 14:57this word became. And Paul says, I'm convinced
- 15:01of my deliverance because you all are praying
- 15:04and the whatever it takes that the Spirit of
- 15:07God is going to bring into my life. But notice,
- 15:10he doesn't think his deliverance is necessarily
- 15:13out of his circumstances. He doesn't say that
- 15:16I'm going to be delivered and I'll be released,
- 15:18that I'm going to be executed, that God's going
- 15:20to just deliver me out of it. He says, I'm convinced
- 15:23of my deliverance that Christ will be exalted
- 15:28in my body, whether I live or whether I die.
- 15:31And then notice he says, according to my earnest
- 15:34expectation. It's another very interesting word
- 15:38that has a, it's a picture of someone who blocks
- 15:41everything out and brings a level of focus. Imagine,
- 15:46if you will, the runner. And you know what? He's
- 15:48like. Two, three yards. And everyone's leaning
- 15:51in on the hundred meter dash. And he leans forward.
- 15:55The crowd is gone. The noise is gone. And it's
- 15:58a word that says, Paul's saying, my eager expectation.
- 16:01My absolute focus. In other words, I believe
- 16:05in this deliverance. I believe because of your
- 16:07prayers. I believe God's going to come through.
- 16:09And I have a laser -like focus in the promises
- 16:14and the character of God. And I have a hope.
- 16:19Jesus promised, I have a hope. Heaven's real.
- 16:23I have a hope. God's in control. I have a hope.
- 16:27God's goodness says that whether I live or whether
- 16:30I die, his highest and best purposes, his hope
- 16:33is in the character, the promises, and the reality
- 16:36of God's goodness and that the worst that can
- 16:40happen is he goes to heaven. And so he says,
- 16:43earnest expectation, hope. His biggest concern
- 16:46is that he would be put to shame. But he says,
- 16:49with all boldness that Christ even now will be
- 16:52exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
- 16:57Notice he prayed that what he would be delivered
- 17:03from is failure to represent Christ well in the
- 17:09midst of crushing circumstances. His biggest
- 17:13concern wasn't whether he lived or died. His
- 17:15biggest concern was Christ's reputation. Whoa.
- 17:22There's three ways in scripture that God delivers
- 17:25us and we tend to only think of one. So get your
- 17:28pencil out. This will be helpful one day in your
- 17:31life. I'm gonna give it God's plan A, God's plan
- 17:36B, God's plan C, or actually it's more probably
- 17:41accurate to say our plan A, our plan B, and our
- 17:46plan C. Plan A, when God uses the word deliverance,
- 17:51he delivers you out of something. He does a miracle.
- 17:54I mean, I've had times where we had no money.
- 17:57We couldn't pay the rent. There's no way. I have
- 18:00no resources. And I get a check in the mail from
- 18:03someone that I've met once years ago for $1 ,000
- 18:07and I pay the rent and I go, that's a miracle.
- 18:09God delivered me out of it. It happened again.
- 18:12A missionary from India actually sent me money
- 18:14during seminary to pay my bills. Go figure. He
- 18:18delivered me out of it. I've had times where
- 18:21we have anointed people with oil, prayed for
- 18:24them and seen a brain tumor miraculously go.
- 18:27Delivered them out of it. Praise God. He still
- 18:30does miracles. But we've prayed for people and
- 18:33three weeks later they've died. God's in control.
- 18:39He has purposes. Some of which we understand,
- 18:42a lot of them that we don't. Deliverance number
- 18:44one, he delivers us out. Of the adversity or
- 18:47the difficulty. Number two. Is he delivers us
- 18:51through them. Jot down 2 Corinthians chapter
- 18:5512. Verses 9 and 10. This is what Paul is experiencing.
- 19:00He tells us that he had this amazing experience.
- 19:03And so that he wouldn't get proud. He was given
- 19:06a thorn in his flesh. Everyone postulates and
- 19:09guesses. Is it malaria? Is it an eye disease?
- 19:12We don't know what it is. But all we know is
- 19:14that there was a. A bad back situation that he
- 19:18was struggling with and he was in pain all the
- 19:21time. And God did not, and he prayed. I mean,
- 19:25Paul's got a pretty effective prayer life, wouldn't
- 19:26you agree? And he asked God in faith, believing,
- 19:29take it away, take it away, take it away. And
- 19:32God said, no, no, no. My grace is sufficient
- 19:36for you for power is perfected in weakness. And
- 19:41then Paul's attitude changed and realized sometimes
- 19:43God wants to do a deeper thing in us and he doesn't
- 19:46deliver us out of it. He delivers us through
- 19:49it. And as he delivers us through it, he refines
- 19:51us and our faith grows and our character changes.
- 19:55And it's very difficult. And he gives us a joy
- 19:58and a contentment and a peace that's unexplainable
- 20:01externally apart from a living God doing something
- 20:04inside of you. The third way that God delivers
- 20:08us is unto himself. We were talking about this
- 20:12as pastors. We were going over the study earlier.
- 20:15And one of the guys in the group said, you know
- 20:18what's kind of odd? Is that in our day, we think
- 20:22the worst thing that could ever happen to a person
- 20:24is they die. And that doesn't seem to be Paul's
- 20:28perspective. Christ gets exalted whether I live
- 20:31or whether I die. And a little bit later, we're
- 20:33gonna read that he's not sure whether he's gonna
- 20:35stick around or die. The dilemma, he thinks it's
- 20:38far better to be with Christ. I've had both my
- 20:43parents die of debilitating, painful, long diseases.
- 20:52When my parents died, by the time they got to
- 20:55where they died, it was, Lord, thank you. To
- 21:00watch them live through what they were living
- 21:02through at that level was really, really painful.
- 21:07And Psalm 116 says, precious in the eyes of the
- 21:10Lord are the death of his godly ones. You see,
- 21:14if all there is is now temporal and someone you
- 21:18love dies, I got news, you got nothing. You got
- 21:22nothing. But if in fact there is an eternity,
- 21:25if there really is a heaven, if what Jesus told
- 21:29the disciples the very last night that allowed
- 21:31them to hang tough and hang on no matter what,
- 21:34there's an eternity, there's a heaven, that it's
- 21:37real, then it's pretty interesting. It sustains
- 21:43you. And it's sad and it's hard and we lose those
- 21:48that we love. And that's why sharing Christ is
- 21:50so important. That's why if you're here or you're
- 21:52watching or you're listening and you've never
- 21:54put your faith in Christ, you need to know that
- 21:57you're gonna be in heaven. And that's not something
- 22:00from trying to be a nice little good person or
- 22:03being a bit moral. Your sins have got to be completely
- 22:06covered. You have to receive the gift of Christ
- 22:09dying on the cross for you in your place and
- 22:12turn from your sin, repent, and ask Christ to
- 22:16forgive you and come into your life. And he will.
- 22:19And you can know for sure. The first reason Paul
- 22:24has joy in the midst of these horrendous circumstances,
- 22:28his deliverance is certain. And he's certain
- 22:34that by the grace of God, he is going to be faithful.
- 22:37He is certain that he's going to be bold in his
- 22:40faith right into the end. And he's certain that
- 22:43whether he lives and gets to go on and minister
- 22:45more or whether he dies and is immediately ushered
- 22:48in the presence of Christ, that he knows that's
- 22:52his hope. But the next reason is equally powerful.
- 22:58The second reason that he has this joy is his
- 23:01source of joy is unshakable. It's unshakable.
- 23:07Circumstances go up, they go down. Incomes go
- 23:09up, incomes go down. Hurricanes come, hurricanes
- 23:12go. Earthquakes come, earthquakes go. Economies
- 23:15go up, economies go down. Marriages are good,
- 23:18marriages aren't so good. Kids do great things
- 23:21that make you proud. Kids do some terrible things
- 23:23that make you sad. You're healthy and working
- 23:26out and doing a triathlon. This year and next
- 23:29year they got a biopsy report and they got tubes
- 23:31running in you. Circumstances up, circumstances
- 23:33down. You either live your life like a little
- 23:36cork on the waves of circumstances of the sea
- 23:39of life or you live your life with that leaning
- 23:43eagerly expectation and anchor of your soul hope
- 23:46that there's a heaven and there's a God and there
- 23:49are promises and he will sustain me and as I
- 23:51trust him and that's what Paul does. His joy,
- 23:55the source of it, is unshakable. He says, for
- 23:58me to live is Christ. Temporal. Eternal. To die
- 24:03is gain. If I'm to live on in the body, this
- 24:06will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall
- 24:09I choose? I don't know. I'm torn between the
- 24:14two. I'm hard pressed from both directions. Having
- 24:17the desire to depart and be with Christ, for
- 24:19that is very much better, yet to remain on the
- 24:22flesh. Is more necessary for your sakes. And
- 24:26then he kind of comes to this moment. And convinced
- 24:27of this. As the spirit of God is speaking to
- 24:30me. As I'm writing this letter. As I'm processing.
- 24:32He says I know that this will turn out. That
- 24:35I'll remain and continue with you all. Why? For
- 24:37your progress and. Is this guy like crazy? Who's
- 24:41he concerned about? Your joy. In the faith. So
- 24:47that your proud confidence in me can abound in
- 24:49Christ. Through my coming to you again. For to
- 24:54me, to live is Christ, to die is gain. Paul lives,
- 25:00there's two platforms in life. You look at life
- 25:04from this platform of time, or you look at life
- 25:07at this platform from eternity. And he says,
- 25:10in time, it's Christ, and if it's Christ, I'm
- 25:13gonna continue to serve, because... unlike American
- 25:17Christianity, he thinks the goal of life is to
- 25:20love God and to serve him and to know him and
- 25:23to enjoy him and to share that with as many people
- 25:26as you can before you die and to model the kind
- 25:29of life for you and your friends or if you're
- 25:31married, your children, so that the most important
- 25:34thing is not what school you go to, not how much
- 25:37money you make, not what you look like, what
- 25:39other people think, but the most important thing
- 25:41is that Christ is the center of your heart and
- 25:44life and you are, actually reflecting what he's
- 25:47like. It's called his glory. Everybody and everything
- 25:51revolves around something. It's interesting,
- 25:55you know, take a microscope and right, you know,
- 25:58you've got the center of the nucleus and those
- 26:01electrons are going around it and now they've
- 26:03got super powerful ones and there's stuff inside
- 26:05of that things going around or, you know, all
- 26:08the planets go around the sun. They found now
- 26:11that our solar system and our sun actually goes
- 26:14around an axle star. Everything in life goes
- 26:17around something. The question is, what does
- 26:19your life go around? Paul said, my life goes
- 26:22around the living Christ. He's my anchor. And
- 26:27so if I live, it's for him. And if I die, it's
- 26:30gain. I'm immediately translated into the presence
- 26:34of Christ. No soul sleep, no purgatory, no waiting.
- 26:40I die instantaneously. I'm in the presence of
- 26:43Christ. And then he begins to think and ponder
- 26:47about, wow, what should I do? I'm hard pressed
- 26:53from both directions. He desires to part and
- 26:57be with Christ. I don't think many of us would
- 26:59say that if we're just honest, right? See, I
- 27:05don't think Christianity was a religion for Paul.
- 27:08I don't think it was a moral statement. I don't
- 27:11think it was, I want to do really good in this
- 27:15life and it has a lot of good byproducts and
- 27:17produces good things and it's important. I think
- 27:20Christianity for Paul was a life transforming
- 27:25moment of a relationship connected to God. And
- 27:29he loved God and he got to know, even though
- 27:32he never met, I mean, we have some visions that
- 27:35he has, but He didn't meet him face to face as
- 27:38far as we know. But the spirit of God living
- 27:41in him, just like he lives in us who are followers,
- 27:44he cultivated that. And he cultivated it by,
- 27:48he took that Old Testament and God revealed to
- 27:51him and this is his word. And he cultivated a
- 27:55tenderness to hear the spirit of God and follow
- 27:58it. And he was always living in community. In
- 28:01other words, it was his relationship and he thought,
- 28:04you know, I have this, I've got this barrier
- 28:06still. I still have this barrier. I've tasted
- 28:09and I've seen and he's changed me and he's revealed
- 28:11things. But I have this barrier. It would be
- 28:13better to be face to face. But his heart is one
- 28:20of, I want to do whatever you want me to do.
- 28:24And these Philippians. They could use some good
- 28:26teaching still. They're still messed up. You
- 28:28know, these two ladies are arguing with each
- 28:30other and under pressure, they're not doing so
- 28:32well. In fact, I'm gonna write them pretty soon
- 28:35about humility and loving each other because
- 28:37they're kind of at each other's throats. So Lord,
- 28:42plan A, I'll be with you. Awesome. Plan B, I'll
- 28:48stay here as long as you want. I think God must
- 28:54want me to stay. Notice the secret is his vantage
- 28:58point. I looked this up in the dictionary and
- 29:01I loved it. A vantage is a position or situation
- 29:05more advantageous than opponents. That's one
- 29:08definition, but I think the second one has much
- 29:10more application for us. A position that allows
- 29:14a clear, broad view, understanding, a vantage
- 29:19point. In other words, what you need to understand,
- 29:22it's not just where's your hope, but it's from
- 29:26where are you looking for your hope? Paul had
- 29:32been beaten at least three times, left for dead
- 29:35once, overnight in the ocean, been in prison,
- 29:41deeply discouraged. I'm not reading into the
- 29:46text. If you read 2 Corinthians pretty carefully
- 29:48and look at Acts, he's probably... clinically
- 29:52depressed at one point, just is almost at the
- 29:55end of his rope. And his words, knock down, but
- 29:57not out. And then he says this in 2 Corinthians
- 30:02chapter four, because I think this is the greatest
- 30:06thing that we need out of this passage and in
- 30:08our life is not to lose heart. Therefore, we
- 30:11do not lose heart, but though our outward man
- 30:15is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed
- 30:18day by day. For momentary light affliction is
- 30:22producing for us an eternal weight of glory far
- 30:27beyond all comparison. While we notice perspective
- 30:31words now, look and see. While we look not at
- 30:35the things which are seen, but we look at the
- 30:38things which are not seen. For the things which
- 30:42are seen are temporal, but the things which are
- 30:45not seen are eternal. But there's a couple questions
- 30:51we need to answer as we close. Where's your hope?
- 30:56See, ask yourself what really gets you discouraged.
- 31:00Ask yourself when you're frustrated and when
- 31:03you're angry and when you're mad. Is your hope
- 31:06in a perfect marriage? Is your hope in upward
- 31:09mobility? Is your hope in what school your kids
- 31:12get in or how they're doing in their grades?
- 31:15Is your hope in your body and how you look? Come
- 31:20on, this is just us in here. Don't look at me
- 31:21like that. Come on now. We all, here's the thing.
- 31:25God loves us so much, he's saying, don't be stupid.
- 31:30Instruct those who are rich in this present world
- 31:32not to be conceited or fix their hope on the
- 31:36uncertainty of riches, America. The uncertainty
- 31:39of riches. But on God who richly supplies us
- 31:43with all things to enjoy. It's not that money's
- 31:47bad. It's not that success is bad, but they make
- 31:51really bad gods. They make great idols. And what
- 31:56idols do is destroy idol worshipers. So the question
- 32:01for every believer in this room is what's my
- 32:04life really going around? Not what I say it's
- 32:07going around or not what I think it's going around.
- 32:09And if you want to know, just go home and check
- 32:11your finances. Then go check where you go on
- 32:14the internet. And then go check where your time
- 32:17goes and check who are your closest friends and
- 32:19what do you talk about. And you'll know exactly
- 32:21what your life is going around. You can sing
- 32:25I love Jesus and come to church and try and be
- 32:27a good person and your life really go around
- 32:29a married person, your kids, your work, your
- 32:35money, your future, and your stuff. And we all
- 32:38do it. So God brought us here together on this
- 32:41day to repent of that. For some of you, he brought
- 32:48you today to give you the biggest gift you'll
- 32:51ever receive in your life, eternal life. You
- 32:54don't have an eternal hope. Well, you've got
- 32:55temporal stuff and you might be successful. You
- 32:57might even be moral. But I'll tell you what,
- 33:00add cancer and a week to live, you better have
- 33:05what's on the other side of this wall. And so
- 33:08he just brought you here to say, it's really
- 33:10not that complicated. Yes, you lose control.
- 33:13to an all -knowing, all -powerful, good God who
- 33:16so demonstrated his love, he died in your place,
- 33:18rose from the dead, and for 2 ,000 years has
- 33:20been transforming the world, and now he wants
- 33:22to transform you. Father, thank you for how good
- 33:28and how kind. Thank you that you love us. God,
- 33:33I thank you that as hard as life has been and
- 33:38as many mistakes as I have made, I've just seen
- 33:41thousands upon thousands upon thousands and myself
- 33:44included experience a hope that no difficulty
- 33:48or tragedy or challenge can change. And so I
- 33:53want to pray now for those that would say, you
- 33:56know, I'm not sure whether I have eternal life.
- 33:59And if that's you, I would like you to bow your
- 34:01heart. Your eyes are already closed, but bow
- 34:04your heart and be as honest as you can be and
- 34:07say, Almighty God, I'm the God of my life and
- 34:12I'm running my life. And I repent. I ask you
- 34:21now to forgive me of all my sins, past, present,
- 34:27and future. I believe that when Jesus died on
- 34:31the cross, he died for my sins and rose from
- 34:33the dead. I accept that gift and ask you to come
- 34:36into my life right now. And then give me the
- 34:40courage to tell someone this very day, Lord,
- 34:44help me to understand your word as you start
- 34:46to speak to me. And God, would you please provide
- 34:49a community of friends to help me grow? And if
- 34:54you're a follower and you realize some of those
- 34:56idols have crept in, would you just tell God,
- 34:59no more. I need a hope that won't change. I need
- 35:06a future that's secure. And then would you covenant
- 35:11with God to tell at least one person before the
- 35:13sun goes down on this day, this is a baby step
- 35:17I'm taking to make Jesus the center of what my
- 35:20whole life goes around. And you probably need
- 35:23some help to get there. You're listening to Living
- 35:29on the Edge with Chip Ingram in a lesson titled
- 35:32Understanding the Power of Hope. Paul's confidence
- 35:36didn't come from controlling how his story would
- 35:38turn out. It came from knowing exactly what his
- 35:41life revolved around. That's the same shift Chip's
- 35:45book, Yes, You Really Can Change, walks you through.
- 35:48Trading a life anchored to your circumstances
- 35:51or personal effort for one anchored to Christ.
- 35:54It's a guide on what spiritual transformation
- 35:57requires and where the power to change really
- 36:00comes from. And every order this week includes
- 36:03a second copy, so you and someone you know can

- 37:00Well, now here's Chip. Before we go any further
- 37:04today, I want to pause and give you the opportunity
- 37:07that I gave the people in our church when I taught
- 37:10this. Maybe the Spirit of God is speaking to
- 37:13you and there's a real battle going on in your
- 37:15heart right now. And you're saying, oh God, what
- 37:19would this look like in my life today if I put
- 37:22all my hope in you? You know, I travel a lot
- 37:26and I get to meet people and I am both surprised,
- 37:31amazed, and so deeply encouraged by how many
- 37:34people will tell me, you know, I was driving
- 37:37in my car and just pushing some buttons. And
- 37:40you came on. And as I listened, God spoke to
- 37:43me. And it was in my car or while I was on the
- 37:46treadmill that I actually paused and recognized
- 37:49for the first time that I needed Jesus, that
- 37:53I needed forgiveness, that I needed a hope that
- 37:56would never go away. And I actually, in that
- 37:59moment, paused. I stopped. And I confessed my
- 38:04sin. And in the name of the Lord Jesus, I ask
- 38:07him to forgive me. If you have never done that,
- 38:10today is the day of salvation. God is speaking
- 38:14to you. He knows all about your life, all about
- 38:18your struggles, all about your fears, all about
- 38:21the things that you're ashamed of that are in
- 38:24your past. And he's saying to you, come unto
- 38:27me. I want to forgive you. I came for you. I
- 38:31lived a perfect life. I died in your place upon
- 38:35the cross to take all of the sins that you've
- 38:38committed and place them on me. But you need
- 38:41to receive this as a free gift by faith. And
- 38:44so if you want to do that in your heart of hearts,
- 38:46you can speak to God. Oh God, today I believe
- 38:50Jesus died in my place to pay for my sin. And
- 38:55I'm asking you to come into my life and forgive
- 38:57me, to make me your son. to make me your daughter.
- 39:01I believe that you paid for my sin on the cross
- 39:04and you rose from the dead to prove that it's
- 39:06true. I want to follow you with all my heart
- 39:09and with all my strength. Please give me your
- 39:12power. And I want you to know that the God who
- 39:16created all that there is cares for you. And
- 39:20at this moment, the biggest and most important
- 39:22thing you can do is to share that with the best
- 39:25Christian you know. The scripture says that believing
- 39:27in our heart and professing with our mouth, we
- 39:30are saved. He wants to love you and help you
- 39:33and encourage you. You need to find a great Bible
- 39:36teaching church this weekend and then come to
- 39:38us at livingontheedge .org. That's livingontheedge
- 39:43.org. And we have some free resources to help
- 39:46you begin to grow in your brand new relationship
- 39:49with the God who loves you. If today's message
- 39:52stirred up something you've never settled before,
- 39:55take Chip up on his invitation. Head to livingontheedge
- 39:59.org slash salvation and let us help you take
- 40:02that next step. Well, that's all for today. Next
- 40:05time, Chip Ingram says the gap between what you
- 40:08expect and what actually happens has a name.
- 40:11And it's costing more Christians their joy than
- 40:13almost anything else. Discover what you can actually
- 40:17count on from God next time here on Living on
