  Recently I made what many are referring to as a bold decision

  to switch my party affiliation to the Republican Party.

  I wanted to take a moment to explain why I chose to become a

  Republican and also to explain why I don't think it was a bold
• 0:16
  decision at all. It is the right decision not
• 0:20
  only for me, but for all my brothers and sisters in the
• 0:23
  black community. You see, in recent history, the
• 0:26
  Democrat Party has created the illusion that their agenda and
• 0:31
  their policies are what's best for black people.
• 0:34
  Somehow it's been forgotten that the Republican Party was founded
• 0:38
  in 1854 as an abolitionist movement with one simple creed,
• 0:43
  that slavery is a violation of the rights of man.
• 0:46
  Frederick Douglass called Republicans the party of freedom
• 0:49
  and progress, and the first Republican president was Abraham
• 0:52
  Lincoln, the author of the Emancipation Proclamation.
• 0:56
  It was Republicans in Congress who authored the 13th, 14th, and
• 1:00
  15th amendments, giving former slaves citizenship, voting
• 1:05
  rights, and due process of law. The Democrats, on the other
• 1:09
  hand, were the party of Jim Crow.

  It was Democrats who defended their rights of slave owners.
• 1:14
  It was the Republican President Dwight Eisenhower who championed
• 1:19
  the Civil Rights Act of 1957, but it was the Democrats in the
• 1:23
  Senate who filibustered the bill.
• 1:26
  You see, at the heart of liberalism is the idea that only
• 1:30
  a great and powerful big government can be the benefactor
• 1:34
  of social justice for all Americans.
• 1:37
  But the left is only concerned with one thing, control, and
• 1:41
  they disguise this control as charity programs such as welfare
• 1:46
  food stamps. These programs aren't designed
• 1:48
  to lift black Americans out of poverty.
• 1:51
  They were always intended as a mechanism for politicians to
• 1:54
  control the black community. The idea that blacks, or anyone
• 1:59
  for that matter, need the government to get ahead in life
• 2:02
  is despicable. And even more important, this
• 2:07
  idea is a failure. Our communities are just as poor
• 2:11
  as they have always been. Our schools continue to fail
• 2:15
  children. Our prisons are filled with
• 2:17
  young black men who should be at home being fathers.
• 2:22
  Our self initiative and our self-reliance have been
• 2:24
  sacrificed in exchange for allegiance to our overseers who
• 2:29
  control us by making us dependent on them.
• 2:33
  Sometime I wonder if the word freedom is tossed around so
• 2:37
  frequently in our society that it has become a cliche.
• 2:42
  The idea of freedom is complex and it's all-encompassing.
• 2:46
  It's the idea that the economy must remain free of government
• 2:49
  persuasion. It's the idea that the press
• 2:52
  must operate without government intrusion, and it's the idea
• 2:56
  that the emails and phone records of Americans should
• 2:59
  remain free from government search and seizure.

  It's the idea that parents must be the decision makers in
• 3:06
  regards to their children's education, not some government
• 3:10
  bureaucrat. But most importantly, it is the
• 3:13
  idea that the individual must be free to pursue his or her own
• 3:18
  happiness, free from government dependence and free from
• 3:22
  government control. Because to be truly free is to
• 3:26
  be reliant on no one other than the author of our destiny.

  These are the ideas at the core of the Republican Party, and it
• 3:35
  is why I am a Republican. So my brothers and sisters of
• 3:39
  the American community, please join with me today in abandoning
• 3:43
  the government plantation and the party of disappointment so
• 3:48
  that we may all echo the words of one Republican leader who
• 3:52
  famously said free at last, free at last.
• 3:57
  Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.
