- 0:11[SPEAKER_02]: It's up, welcome in.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's that time back here on a Wednesday because we're not traveling the Sooner's on S.I.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_02]: Podcast, right, Chapman here at the more HQ with the Buffman, John Hoover, done running point from the home office.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_02]: Now just podcasting from the home office.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_02]: Who would that hire you?
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: Back in the back in Broken Arrow, from the podcast, what would we call it, the podcast studios.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: The Sooner's on S.I.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: Podcast Studios in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's magnificent, and I'm sure that you took in.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for everyone who stopped into the pod last week.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: Who was understanding of our guy, Carson and I. We've tried to cast here in one second before.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_02]: Basically, so a year ago, we were at the Omni and Dallas.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_02]: plenty of room, plenty of SEC signage, great backdrop stuff like this.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the Omni in Atlanta, they have a new Omni, it's at the battery, which is why I was on Friday where the Braves are.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_02]: They've not given much TLC to the Omni in Atlanta, which meant Argye Carson, Field and I had to podcast from the sky bridge between one side of the Omni to the other.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: So it was the only thing that was
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, first up had chairs was not awkwardly in a corner, was well lit.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: It kind of showed it later in the background.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: So, uh, thanks for putting up with us and us, uh, podcasting in a weird, like, hush tone to try to disturb everyone around us.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_02]: But I think it turned out okay, Carson.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, definitely did.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: We made the most of it.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think both of us excited to be back in our studios, though.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think mine can use a little bit more work.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: You and who definitely have the upper hand there as far as backgrounds go.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: But it's nice to be back still catching up on sleep, but we are very close to football season.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_02]: We're almost there, a little over a week away from camp, firing up in full swing back in Norman, but before we preview that, which we will do some previewing of that, there were some other news and notes.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: First let's go back.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_02]: We're all home, carcinized, traveled back in, varying degrees, hooves.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_02]: We got a nice compromise.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_02]: The Braves won the day.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: I was there.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_02]: So I was happy.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_02]: The Yankees won the series.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: So you were happy.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_02]: But while we were out in Atlanta, you were running point.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_02]: You were still turning content from back in Broken Arrow.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_02]: Car side talked to great data.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: SCC media days before we move on to like the media poll and stuff that was released after we all left going back.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: Well, what was there anything or was there anything that really stood out to you from Brent Vennables for fight at the Apple doing the car wash and all that stuff that media days?
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, Ryan, I hope that all my media brethren and sister, is that right?
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: That, hey, say that, I don't know.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: All my media colleagues, I hope they didn't miss me too much.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's my first conference media days that I'd missed in twenty, twenty, twenty, two years, twenty, four years.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: I can't remember, but yeah, it was not the, not the easiest thing for me to navigate the end of the point man here at home.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of, a lot of,
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: SEC now, a lot of call find bomb on the the eighty five inch out in the living room.
- 3:11[SPEAKER_00]: Not my favorite way to to attack media days.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: It just wasn't.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: But it was fun.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: It looked like you guys were having a good time.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: You you guys were on TV.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: Probably as much as almost anybody.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'll say anybody, but almost anybody.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: So it's good to see you all taking on the the workload.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like you did.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: I was proud of you.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: You did great work.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: You did amazing work.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: Both of you all week.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think we were one of the maybe what four or five outlets that had somebody there for all four days.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: There wasn't a lot.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: So proud of you guys.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: You did great.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: The thing that stuck out to me the most from an OU perspective at media days.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: I said this on a radio show.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: I did last week I think was just brim venables, unending, relentless positivity.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, coming off another six and seven season, you got a new quarterback, new coordinator, a new defensive coordinator at him.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: He had to rebuild the coaching staff a little bit, fortify some things, bring in some guys.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's got Jim Nagy and his staff, you know, for lack of a better word, crawling around them all over the place, trying to find recruits and brev animals.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: continues to be the most positive guy in the room.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's got the best look of a thirty thousand feet and a micro vision of what he's looking at and what he knows and what he's aware of.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: But yet he's the guy that comes out and is the face of the program and gives you that.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, relentless positivity.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I think from that perspective, oh, using good shape.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see if that translates into the season.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting because, of course, I know you haven't been around for the full four years of break middle.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_02]: I laugh when who says that because you're not wrong, but break middle is also the first person to say that he usually has an overly negative view of things because he and he's told us and the local media this multiple times that his thought is always, that was fine, where are we gonna get attacked next?
- 5:09[SPEAKER_02]: And that was like his job as a defensive coordinator.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: So I guess that could mean one or two things to me, A, that
- 5:15[SPEAKER_02]: Brent Minibles truly believes in the pile up of by his admission, a terrible offensive coordinator, high air, all the injuries, all that stuff and he truly after seeing been our buckle work for a couple months and John material believes that things are going well, all that stuff or Brent Minibles is so far in it that he has
- 5:35[SPEAKER_02]: Tide himself to the mast and he is going to either sink or flow and go down with this thing, which I think everyone knows that Britain will succeed or fail going ten million miles now.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_02]: That's how he does things.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_02]: And it's just kind of funny because, of course, when we get to the end of the week down at SEC media days, it feels like there's a big disconnect that formed.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_02]: If you like who were watching the SEC now coverage, the SEC network stuff, you saw a lot of
- 6:05[SPEAKER_02]: TV talking heads, all that that talked about how optimistic they are toward job material.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma could be maybe a breakout, a dark course, whatever.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_02]: Some of the people at least that I had talked to were also very interested, Carson, and in Oklahoma what they were going to be.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: And then we get to the end of the week Friday, you launch out there, the SEC poll and all that stuff.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_02]: And you look down and the credentialed media did not share the view of the talking heads and all that stuff as you look down Carson, Oklahoma.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: tenth in the preseason poll, as voted by the credentialed masses in Atlanta.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I think that was very interesting, but you have to look at predicted order of finish is not power rankings.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's not necessarily stacking up who are the best teams.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's who finishes best in the conference, because you compare, for example, OU schedule two Missouri schedule.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: Those teams with flip flop schedules could be totally different teams.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: And picking, I know OU finished ahead of Missouri in those standings.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: But think about if OU had Missouri schedule, they'd probably be at least a few spots higher.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: I had them at tenth personally.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is a team that's going to take a step forward.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be, it would be hard for there to be as many bad breaks for the sooners this year as they were in twenty twenty four.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I think this team definitely will be better.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: But from a wins and losses in conference standpoint, it's hard to imagine they just, they're near the top few teams in the league.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think the range could be anywhere from fourth to fourteen that's being totally honest.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is a team that could really prove itself, but with the schedule of things go wrong again, it could be another bad finish in conference.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree with that completely fourth to fourteen who knows.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: What last year taught us is that literally the worst thing that can happen
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: can happen.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: You lose your top five wide receivers, your offensive lines and flux the entire year.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: Your best run and back goes out of midseason and your five star quarterback is a complete bust because of all that stuff going on around him.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: Jackson was probably for the most part fine.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: If he had had all his players around him, but you stripped back the offense to a bunch of backups and a bunch of freshmen and a couple of walk-ons, your quarterback's gonna suck.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: Just this, that's just a nature of football.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's the worst case scenario that could have happened to Oklahoma last year, and they still won six games.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: So this year, let's just say that the coin flips completely, and it's not everybody gets hurt.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe this time everybody stays healthy.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: What's the ceiling for this team?
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we have to start asking.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: What's the ceiling?
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: Against this schedule, it might not be that high.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, eight wins, nine wins, ten wins, maybe.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: That might be a long shot.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: But like I said, everybody got hurt last year.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: If everybody stays healthy this year could be a different deal.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_02]: With this schedule, if you get to nine, you're going to be right in the thick of you being the same spot, the Alabama was a year ago as far as in the midst of all these discussions and for Alabama, it ended up being a little bit of like misfortune with Clemson coming through and beating SMU.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_02]: And if that's if you had just won that game on the HC Championship game, that would probably create a one more spot.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: But then you start getting into the context of like, how did the nine wins come?
- 9:18[SPEAKER_02]: How did the three losses come?
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: Were they close losses?
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: Were they getting blown out by a five and five Oklahoma tea?
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what does that look like?
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where, you know, piecing it together.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_02]: It puts you in the hunt and the context is what matters.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_02]: What also is funny about the SEC year goes that we say, okay, what does tenth look like?
- 9:38[SPEAKER_02]: Well, last year, fourth through ninth Missouri Ole Miss Alabama LSU South Carolina A&M, fourth through nine, all tied.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: at five and three in conference play.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: Adam, you know, kind of was the back end of that.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: Florida was tenth a year ago at four and four in conference play.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_02]: And if you talk about, okay, if Oklahoma goes four and four in conference play, then you add the three gimmies and the non-con, you're already up to seven.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: If you can take advantage of a Michigan team in week two that while the defense was mighty impressive in the bowl of gaming in Alabama a year ago,
- 10:15[SPEAKER_02]: That was just a ball game to break in a new quarterback.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: You've got a veteran Oklahoma defense that you hope will in week two try to frustrate and confuse a new quarterback all that stuff.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_02]: You could, I mean, even if you get picked at tenth and you go from last year that there's absolutely a pathway to an eight and four car somewhere.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_02]: Again, that's where we get into what is the context of like an eight and four season because
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: In a capsule in a vacuum, you might say eight and four, not good enough for Oklahoma.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_02]: In a vacuum, you go six and seven, ten and three, six and seven, eight and four plus a bowl of game.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_02]: Come on up.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_02]: Good enough for a bit of a little bit.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_02]: When you look at this schedule, I think that a lot of people while you have the Oklahoma expectation applied to it.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: I think it could be forgiving if that includes like
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: A really close loss to, you're not going to like losing the Texas, but if Texas is really good, a close loss of Texas, a close loss on the road at Bama, maybe get your soul crushed by South Carolina on the road with a hectic, like LSU, South Carolina game, like a year ago where South Carolina comes on top.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_02]: Like there'd be no shame in any of those results, and you still end up at a four and four that was good enough for tenth in the SEC last year.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, what stands out to me about this schedule is aside from really taxes that are so many unpredictable elements for these SEC opponents that owe you faces in twenty twenty five.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: There are nine loseable games.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I know you schedule, but how many of those will actually be losses, because I mean, Ole Miss, Tennessee, New Quarterbacks, totally new offenses, and Bama, they're starting a new quarterback, Milo, obviously in the NFL now.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: Missouri looks totally different.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: Auburn of course has our friend Jackson Arnold.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: So there are so many different pieces that I think all of these teams will be tough out.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't think there's an easy win on that schedule.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like the unpredictability might actually work in a used favor.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's fair assessment.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of unknowns in the conference this year.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe more certainly more than last year when you had a bunch of established quarterbacks.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm trying to think of just scrolling through my very shady memory.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: uh... yeah i think this year's uh... this year's league is and we saw it and uh... gosh was it uh... one stadium somebody predicted the or offered the uh... the the wind loss totals and the best in the conference were nine point five they were not projecting the wind loss total to be
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: But anybody in the conference to have a double-digit wins.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so that to me tells you that it's absolutely wide open.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all come is going to have to have some things break for it.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, Jake not has got us to healthy.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: John Matiers got us to healthy.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: Bill Beedmo and Kevin Wilson need to put their heads together on five starting offensive linemen if they all stay healthy.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then those, what those white receivers, you know, don't think Jake and Gibson's going to be part of the mix this year.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you lose a Nicky Anderson.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: You lose an experienced guy like Jelof Rook.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: You got to replace that talent.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: And so far, you've done it with guys who were on the FCS level or group of five level or even a division two level.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: So that could be a sketchy part.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: I know everybody says, hey, these guys are good.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: They're explosive.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: They're this.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: They're that.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: They're big body.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: They're strong.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's fast.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: I'd like to see it on the field before I commit to believing it.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think that before you even talk about if they're good or bad, I think I'd just like to see the guys that are supposed to be the first string guys play football.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_02]: That would be in itself a big upgrade, whether they're talented enough or not or all that stuff.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_02]: One thing's for sure, if Oklahoma wants to be a quote unquote surprise team or things like that, then there's gonna be a lot of sooners that need to take the gathered SEC media by surprise.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_02]: You look across the all conference teams that came out in tandem with
- 14:07[SPEAKER_02]: the preseason poll and you've got armates and Thomas tough beat on the second team as defensive in that is fully I think you start talking about all the defensive ends in the SEC and somebody's gonna be left out of the preseason first team.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think there's a lot of respect for Jade not he was also a preseason all second team selection despite his injury riddle to your last year.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_02]: You look at geometry or not in that group.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_02]: It was Laura Sellers, Archmany and Garrett Nussmire who
- 14:34[SPEAKER_02]: I can forgive via a bunch of SEC voters for picking three guys that they've seen play before, even if our chasm played a ton of football, Texas.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: The only other contribution for Oklahoma came on these special teams in the form of our guyman as a reprising his role as the SEC third team, long snapper.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_02]: This is not like a knock on him, but when you talk about guys that you think of being all SCC guys, really just two in our Mason and art and of course you look at it and it's no going to defense that was really good a year ago, but probably when you look at
- 15:08[SPEAKER_02]: preseason expectations things like that with dating stuff's been headed to the to the league with Billy Bowman headed to the league.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not sure that like a Robert Spears jittings or a kip Lewis really got the respect that they probably earned a year ago in this preseason voting but at the same time I think those are guys that are gonna be more than happy to be like we'll take that extra chip.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: We'll place it on the shoulder.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_02]: We'll not be worried about it and they would all give you the the can line of we're worried about who's on the postseason team then on
- 15:38[SPEAKER_02]: preseason team.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's funny you mentioned those two guys because that's exactly who I was going to say was snubbed from OU's defense.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: Those two players have definitely proven that they can be excellent.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think Lewis without Studsman's going to be even better than he was in twenty twenty four RSJ.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he really proved to be one of the best at forcing foumbles last year in the nation.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I'd say a breakout season, but he really thrived in the secondary
- 16:03[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I'm curious to see how guys like Marvin Jones Jr.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: do obviously never really lived up to it at Florida State of Georgia, but he was a highly talented prospect for a reason.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: There's a reason he had that much hype going into college.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he turns out to be a star for the sooner's, and then there's just a bunch of other guys to that.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say little wine is somebody that our Mason Thomas was like, yeah, he's going to be big in our defense, even though he hasn't done a lot so far.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: So you never know, it's all preseason stuff, just like the predicted order of finish.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: So you never really know, three things can happen, injuries can happen, other players from other schools, maybe aren't quite as good as the hype they get.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, take all of this stuff with the grain of salt.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Guys, I was looking back at the text message.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: I sent you and when I was preparing to write that story here, the pair of the twenty twenty five preseason all SEC sooners.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: I did not expect three and I did not expect those three, you know.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: One is a transfer, one is a long snapper, right?
- 17:04[SPEAKER_00]: And the other guy was the second team on SEC last year.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, our Mason Thomas was the only guy that you really thought for sure, okay, that's a guy that's gonna be on here.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: I asked you about material.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: We kind of came to the consensus, probably not understandable.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: I figured, Ot might get some run.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: He did our Mason, of course.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I asked you about Jake Jackson, freshman all American, Eli Bowen, freshman all American,
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, you fired back immediately.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: What about Kip or RST?
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: Robert Spears Jennings was like fourth in the country, fifth in the country and forced fumbles last year.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: And Kip had those two touchdowns, those two Kipsixes.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: stuff like that catches people as people's attention when they're picking the all SEC team you would think and I thought with all the hype going into the Oklahoma's preseason with how good the defensive line is we've heard from Phil steel and unit rankings from all these preseason magazines and whatnot so so on and so forth lindies does a unit rankings and
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: I thought Grayson, Holden and Dominic Williams, might squeak into the all preseason preseason all SEC team, just based on the hype that those guys have gotten.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: If not, you know, Jayden Jackson at defensive tackle.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: So that it's probably a good thing.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: that Oklahoma only got three one being a long server one being a first time player you know transfer.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's probably a good thing because there's a lot of good players on this team now who see that and have an additional layer of motivation to go out and kick some bot this year.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder just how much of the
- 18:43[SPEAKER_02]: The defensive turnaround at Oklahoma has been lost in the fact that they didn't win many games last year.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's something that you look at, oh my gosh, Seth Carolina put up, twenty one points in the flash.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, none of that was on the Oklahoma defense.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_02]: It was two defensive scores for the game cocks and a short field touchdown.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 19:01[SPEAKER_02]: Like the Missouri game, Oklahoma did give up that drive right at the end with the, it didn't the OE saw that stuff, but they're not in that spot.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: If Jacks and Arnold's not,
- 19:11[SPEAKER_02]: you know, rolling the ball around left right and center.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_02]: And oh, by the way, it was a defensive score that put Oklahoma in a spot to blow that.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 19:19[SPEAKER_02]: So, so much of that, you know, for a lot of the preseason stuff, especially defensively, and like it wide receiver is a lot of, let me just pull up last year's SEC production rankings and yep, that guy's back, that guy's back.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_02]: I just wonder how much of this was lost in the shuffle of like, because Oklahoma's offense was so bad.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_02]: The team was bad, and because the team was bad, no one in their head was thinking, hey, that's that breathable defense that actually is playing really good football.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's just trying to like carry the weight of an SEC season on its shoulders by itself, and kind of got lost in the shuffle.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: Other things too, like I wonder probably what have got on the list, just because there's a lot of nice receivers returning and stuff like that.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_02]: But if Dian Burke's hadn't been like just hurt a year ago, let's say if this season Dian Burke's was a transfer,
- 20:08[SPEAKER_02]: that had the same hype train when he came from Purdue.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if he might have gotten some love as well.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_02]: So there's a lot to get into with Oklahoma and all that and we will as we open up our can't preview stuff like that.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_02]: Plenty of other stuff happening around too.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_02]: If you head to the website, open the suitors onside.com.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_02]: The first thing you'll notice
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: Refresh front page.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_02]: It looks really nice.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: So our friends over with the on SI network or are going around making everything look uniform, making it look a little bit more like SI dot com.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: So if you like that hit us up.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: Let us know.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: We'll pass that along past that up the chain.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think first off the thing for me, who is that they're folks on loading fast, which we love because we fire the content.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: into the sun and the best part about that is you never have to have an account or anything just hit Oklahoma Sooner's on a side.com always free.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_02]: We don't have stuff behind the paywall.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_02]: The second thing you might have noticed, John, is a couple of big events here.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_02]: We had Baker Mayfield stop in the town.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_02]: Carson was there.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_02]: We'll talk about that here in a second.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: But this week, we also got the search committee for Oklahoma's athletic director.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: That thing's ongoing.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_02]: We knew it was going to be chaired by Randall Stevenson.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_02]: We know that he's the point man, the front man, all that fun stuff.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's a twelve member list.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_02]: The ones that probably stuck out to those ones that are here to break down the sport side of Oklahoma, and maybe not some of the institutional stuff, as you've got Bob Stoops and Sherry Cole, a couple of the legendary coaches who work for a long time under joke, sickly owned.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: Sam Bradford, the Heitzman Choppy winner, who has been more and more prevalent in Oklahoma, everything since retirement and all that stuff.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_02]: Kinsey Hanson, the softball studs, she's your student representative
- 21:43[SPEAKER_02]: I like to imagine a world in which Sam Bradford and Kinsey Hansen are texts each other on the side in submitting a list of Randall Stevenson who this is standing operating procedure at a spot at Oklahoma right you get a big committee for reaching people from the university side from different areas of the athletic department but it's still interesting then the last to see some heavy hitters there representing the athletic side for Randall Stevenson and his committee to buy to use new AD.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: heavy hitters, I see what you did there.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: Kinsey Hanson, I've been watching her with the is at the spark hit, but hit bombs in preseason or whatnot.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: So your scenario of Sam and Kinsey texting back and forth.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: might be better illustrated if just imagine everybody goes into this meeting and they come out with, you know, fifteen names to start with and Kinsey and Sam start texting back and forth.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: What a bunch of idiots, you know, they don't know the first thing about what an athletic director does, you know, for the school, for the students.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: When I first saw this list, I was like, Kinsey handsome, what?
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: But she's representing the entire student athlete, student body, so to speak.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's great.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a really good move on their part because that's who the athletic director ends up representing is the students.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_00]: So Joe Kstigleon always said that was their center.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: That was their their compass so to speak.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: It was was the as an athletic director you you respond to you represent the students the student athletes.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_00]: So that turns out to be a big thing and
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: Kinsey is a great representative.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: She is, we talked about this over the years, Ryan, when she was like a red shirt freshman, she was doing press conferences, and I'm like, it's girl, it's so mature.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: And got such a good head on our shoulders.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: Got a great perspective on, you know, the life of a student at the life of a catcher in all American catcher.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, some of these other names, I mean, you knew Bob would be on it, right?
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: You knew, of course, Joe Ciglay on his gonna maintain his input.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna continue to be a voice, give them, you know, share his contacts, so to speak, forward the contacts to people that might wanna inquire about the job.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: Sam is interesting, absolutely, because he has been disconnected from the program just a little bit, especially while he was in the NFL.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't come back very often that I know of.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: He has done that since retiring.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: He's become a little more involved in coming back and taking part in activities and things like that.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: And then, yeah, Sherry, Cole's been retired.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't understand this design from outside the university.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: She's been retired for what five years now, four years.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: There's no doubt.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: She's going to have input.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: She's got a value to who because of who she is and her relationship with Joe professionally.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know too much about these other folks.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: Vice President of Executive Affairs, Chief of Staff, Vice President and General Counsel, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know too much about the rest of the people that are on this list, but let's be honest with ourselves.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_00]: Randall Stevenson is going to take all the recommendations.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to look at all the names.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to consider all the candidates and then he's going to hire who he wants to hire.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think the rest is just kind of like standard operating procedure as far as.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_02]: Let's make sure everyone's involved all that stuff, which is perfectly fine.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_02]: Cause as we know, it'll be like you said, right?
- 25:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'll see if it's run on the point man.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's the chair of the committee, all that.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'm interested like Bob has been around as we know, but not in the day to day.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_02]: So is this going to be something where Bob and then Sherry who served the similar role for Louis basketball program, Jenny's talked about hitting her up at different times.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what do they think about this?
- 25:32[SPEAKER_02]: Stuff like that.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_02]: If maybe Bob and Sherry can be a, hey, you know, Lincoln and Brent asked me about that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, you know, that kind of stuff to be a sounding board.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_00]: But it feels like, it feels like their involvement is gonna be more of a, here are some of the qualities we want in an athletic director.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what, it all goes back to,
- 25:59[SPEAKER_02]: The big for reaching conversation, right, when a couple weeks ago when jokes are going to answer his retirement is, do we know, does Rachel Stevenson want someone fully out of the business world?
- 26:11[SPEAKER_02]: Does he want someone that is a young athletic director of like a Zack Salman type that's seen the old world in the new when we talk about collegiate athletics?
- 26:19[SPEAKER_02]: Does he want someone that's been in it for a while and is a proven track record of innovating on universities?
- 26:24[SPEAKER_02]: What does that look like?
- 26:25[SPEAKER_02]: It makes it tough to, you know,
- 26:27[SPEAKER_02]: come back through.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think that the contract this committee is going to change that fundamentally.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's just interesting to see what voices Oklahoma likes to pull there.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_02]: Someone who's not on the committee, but was back around Norman earlier this week, this weekend, Baker Mayfield in town for his football camp.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_02]: And Carson, I'm just going to toss this over to you.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_02]: He talked about a ton of stuff.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: John Mc's here, Britt Venibule's, jokes secretly on life with the box, bringing out he was sterling shepherd.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, let's start with material and kind of work through it.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_02]: We heard the stories we confirm the stories, right?
- 27:01[SPEAKER_02]: During the recruitment Bill Bellachek North Carolina, they're coming after John material, material picks up the phone.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_02]: Hi, I'm Baker Mayfield.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_02]: I'd like to talk to you about this.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_02]: We know that material during the spring he told us he wasn't trying to bug Baker too much.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_02]: You can tell a little bit at the light.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_02]: uh... what's that it sounds like though that uh... that's not going to be the only conversation jomits here in bickermay field have certainly over this season and in the rest of it here's ten year in dormant
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, it definitely doesn't.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that's that's quite the resource to have because nobody really embodies Oklahoma football like Baker Mayfield did in his three years.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty pretty impressive that Baker Mayfield's pull to Oklahoma was greater than that of Bill Bellachak who's won what seven Super Bulls at this point.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he knew about the sign shows that would come with his with Bell Bellachak's fiance.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that was something that drove him away.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: Still very impressive just
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: That material went to OU after Baker's conversation.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: It was really cool to hear how much promise he has in both material, this program, written, venables.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_01]: He is obviously someone that loves the university.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he'd ever publicly say like, yeah, we're doomed.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: But he seemed very enthusiastic as far as just what he believes this team can do in your two and beyond in the SEC.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'll just add this guys for a little bit of context for our listeners and readers and viewers and whatnot.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you goes to Knoxville this year, right for a game.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: It will be ten years since Baker may feel made his big debut, so to speak, in Knoxville, twenty-fifteen.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: Ten years has gone by since Baker debuted for the sooners and now he's in the NFL.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: Holy cow, how does ten years go so fast?
- 28:47[SPEAKER_02]: If any Irish talk about that, this morning is we were trying to figure out, hey, which games were we flying to versus driving?
- 28:55[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like drive tusk loses.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_02]: It's a fly to Nashville and drive over.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_02]: We were like toss that around because it's July, twenty-third in the biggest story right now is Jerry Jones.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_02]: We were done talking about Jerry Jones.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's insane to think that that was what a week to match up, right?
- 29:11[SPEAKER_02]: And it's something that I've talked about before, maybe if I were better at my job, I'd write about this, maybe.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_02]: But it feels too much like prognostication and just looking to do a crystal ball, but it's kind of crazy how looking back that game is obviously iconic in the lore of Baker Mayfield, which makes it iconic in Oklahoma's
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: lore but that was a group that in week two went to Knoxville and nothing worked for a half little worked in the third quarter.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_02]: You actually got two good drives one or two emphatic goal line plays in an overtime and that was like the launch pad for Baker Mayfield.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_02]: You got a really good defense coming to town in week two this year.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just here to say if the offense doesn't move in the first and second quarter against Michigan
- 29:57[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't mean Jon material is going to be bigger.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_02]: And it also doesn't mean that this offense can't be good by week fifty.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: So much stuff there.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: Part of that game, Jon, you and I know this was a very iconic photo of a very iconic stop and and then leap by sterling shepherd.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_02]: The decade later, those guys, I guess nine years later, got three, you night last year.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_02]: I know that Baker talked a little about Chef, but what was he talked about getting the band back together with the box?
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was neat to hear about.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean,
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: Just looking at how his career's gone, he was a fairly good quarterback in Cleveland and it kind of felt like he was done wrong by that organization moving on from him, of course, getting to Sean Watson.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: Then he goes to Carolina.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_01]: The Panthers are horrible.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: Baker doesn't play well, which is not surprising considering how bad that team was.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: Brave Stanton, the Los Angeles with the Rams, and now he's let the bucks to play off appearances two years in a row, really good team in the NFC South.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: And now being with Sterling Shepherd, that's just another weapon to go along with.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, that's gotta be cool to have those two guys who have kind of been stars in the NFL, plus one of his old teammates.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's just a great fit.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_01]: And from what I gathered at that media availability on Saturdays, that's where he wants to be for the foreseeable future.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_00]: you guys have heard of buyers or more obviously I did a radio show in Cleveland two days ago or yesterday yesterday yesterday morning
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: Did a radio show in Cleveland?
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: About, I'd say, seventy to seventy five percent of the fan base and the people who cover the team have what you would call sellers remorse on Baker Mayfield, rejuvenating his career somewhere other than the mistake by the lake that is Cleveland.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: They hate it.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, why did our team?
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: Why did our franchise do him like this?
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: put all the blame on him.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just when it was unfolding, it was just like core baker, you know, how see he said, if anybody can rejuvenate the Cleveland Browns, it's me.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: He did for one year and then he got hurt and then they shipped him away and now he's thriving in the NFL.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: So just gotta get away from Cleveland.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of crazy.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to make this Ryan centric for two seconds.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_02]: How much of an effect the AFC West has on bakers like because if it weren't for the touchback fumble rule against Kansas City, I don't know if the Cleveland would have held on to win that game, but that was a turning point of the Browns going into Arrowhead.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_02]: and maybe being a little speed bump in the path of the chiefs and what the chiefs have become, which certainly would have probably changed the perception of Baker that next year known he was playing through his shoulder and all that stuff.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_02]: And then it was the Raiders that saved Baker Mayfield's career by getting their butt beat by him on twenty four hour notice as Baker like studied the playbook from Caroline over to LA that he plays on Thursday night football and Wednesday night game anyway.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're watching Baker Mayfield and you're enjoying him with the box,
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: A passing thought for me, and if you'd like to do a thank me, you can put it in my Vinmo as I was a miserable Raiders fan that night.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm kidding.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, it's just kind of crazy how these glass door moments and sports and for Baker he's had more than one of those, but certainly seems like he's in a comfortable spot now with the box and a place that he's happy to kind of call home and we've seen it a ton, whether it be this, I've seen it in off seasons before.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: Any time the bucks front office goes on record and talks on like a podcast or anything like that.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_02]: Any time the old line or a see words.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's always like yeah, Baker's the first one up there.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: Great dude.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody up.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: Try to welcome everybody.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's everything.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_02]: The bucks are getting the version of Baker the local home offense.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: New.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: So long about Baker's the first one to reach out and all that stuff.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_02]: And it's just cool to see Baker find himself a home because I think we all knew the potential he had.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_02]: It was just the nerves of Cleveland and
- 33:55[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen that that's been top for multiple redirects.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: Find a home and a hundred million dollar contract.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_02]: Helps that helps as well.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_02]: Hunterville goes a long way in Tampa Bay as it does all the way across.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: Back onto the Oklahoma side of things.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_02]: sooner, do to open up can next week.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_02]: Be sure you head over to the website, openmastersonesside.com, not just for our previous of camp, all that stuff, but also on Monday, sports illustrated, rolled out their preseason top, twenty five, the sooner snuck in to twenty five, which I think kind of shows like the duality of Oklahoma seasons a little bit like what we've talked about when it comes to
- 34:35[SPEAKER_02]: There is optimism, the team's gonna be better.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_02]: What is better?
- 34:38[SPEAKER_02]: Look like on this schedule.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_02]: How much better is better?
- 34:41[SPEAKER_02]: All that stuff, but we'll go a long way to do in that.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_02]: We'll talk about the defense and special teams next week.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's your preview going into Can't, but Carson, let's start with the easy one.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_02]: We tracked material in our buckle all the way through spring practice.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_02]: What are you looking for from a tier in our buckle through fall camp in the couple of weeks leading up to August, third year when the sooners and the vaunted red birds of Illinois state roll into Norman.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the one thing that sticks out to me is connection with the receivers that Oklahoma has.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously got a big, they went on a big spending spree in the transfer portal, getting guys like Keyantes, Louis, Giovanni Gibson, Isaiah Sittania, Josiah Martin.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, a big haul that they got from the portal, and I'm curious just how it's kind of free agency type approach goes with material, our buckle, this new system.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's going to be
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: a lot different than it was and that goes without saying with stuff with trail leading the unit last year so i think just that's one of the big things obviously we've seen that material can play he's a dual threat can do a lot of things i want to see how long it takes in a game setting to actually get that connection with some of these receivers all of whom he's never played with before
- 35:53[SPEAKER_02]: I also don't know how they're going to piece this thing together because it felt like in Springball, Giovanni Gibson continually came up as well as the Tagna.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, Satan, yeah, excuse me.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_02]: Um, a little bit of stop start with Countess Lewis and like Josiah Martin as far as getting a smidge banged up things like that.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_02]: And then
- 36:10[SPEAKER_02]: Gibson goes down, which leads to Oklahoma going out and getting Dr. Michael Carter hoping that if nothing else can he plug the whole early while Gibson gets back up to speed, and as we talked about last week, Brentman will said, Jimining's out of the boot, as he gets full speed, all that stuff will get those updates to follow, but it'll be interesting, because you're looking at
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: There's a couple of groups of guys that I find fascinating.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_02]: First off, like, Deon Berks, getting back healthy, can he just find a way to stay on the field and be the impact.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_02]: But then you look at like, Zion Curney, Zion Ragans, Ivan Carion, true freshman year ago, true freshman thrown into a terrible spot for true freshman.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_02]: But guys, they didn't really produce at all up until Curney had like a nice moment in the bowl game.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_02]: Can they take that and now use that as a platform to say, okay, we got everything thrown out of set once.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_02]: Can you build on that?
- 37:01[SPEAKER_02]: What are the transfers going to look like in minutes?
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: Elijah Thomas and in many choice, those
- 37:05[SPEAKER_02]: are two, the two freshman wide receivers that physically, a big, big body in many choice and wow, I just not a small guy.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_02]: He's the explosive, do everything was all over the place all over the field.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_02]: It should go like, can those guys earn enough respect immediately that Emmet Jones doesn't have like freshman PTSD if they get thrown into the fire early?
- 37:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, one thing that I think Emmett Jones would like to avoid is the emergence of somebody like Jacob Jordan, for instance, you know, walk on true freshman, unheralded.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_00]: And by midseason, he's your best receiver.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_00]: How the hell did that happen?
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: Well, everybody else got hurt.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody else was consistent.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: If that happens again, that's a nightmare, right?
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's a worst case scenario.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: So, I think, you know, everybody appreciates the work that Jacob did as a freshman.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: Again,
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: completely unheralded.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody expected him to do anything as a freshman, a true freshman walk on.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_00]: And he, in some measure, held that thing together for a little while while the other young young guys came along.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_00]: So that was cool to see.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_00]: But with all the newcomers you've got, all the, the five names that we've mentioned over and over, those guys have to be your frontline players.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_00]: Those guys have to contribute in a big, a big, big way.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: And Deon Berks has to stay healthy.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_00]: He just has to stay healthy.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: If he does,
- 38:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that's a big if because, you know, he was in and out of the lineup with various injuries last year.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: If these days healthy, I think material has a security blanket, a comfort zone that he can go to.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that really brings it.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: It gives everybody else a little time to get going as newcomers to the SEC because I will argue, okay, offensive line, offensive tackle and defensive end might be the one
- 38:50[SPEAKER_00]: that you could argue as a better or more difficult individual matchup.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think the toughest individual matchup when you get to the NFL or a college league like the SEC, the toughest individual matchup is for a wide receiver to get separation from those big, strong, athletic, long arm defensive backs, corner backs especially.
- 39:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's why it's so tough to get open.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: We saw it last year.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: We saw, you know, Jackson Arnold's running around like, oh my God, there is nobody open.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: I gotta get out of here.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's because they're playing in the SEC against SEC cornerbacks with receivers who were not ready for that show.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: So the receiver core has got to come up, has got to grow, has got to explode, get in an out of brakes, route running is going to be huge, timing is going to be huge, especially with a new quarterback, new offensive coordinator, timing is going to be everything because if material gets back there and things all of a sudden get off schedule, you know, you're looking for a guy and he's not there.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: or you're ready to throw to a guy and he's covered.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: That's when the passing game goes south as poor Jackson Arnold found out last year.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_02]: One, one thing that will help and who, I don't want to put us into our own version of PTSD here, but how many times were we up in a press box post game just to be like, hey, we've got this game going on in the background and these two teams stink.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_02]: But you know what's happening?
- 40:11[SPEAKER_02]: On first down the offensive coordinator has a timing route in his, in his arsenal,
- 40:16[SPEAKER_02]: and they've got somebody open, at least got them four or five yards to start a driver or start a new set of doubts.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_02]: You weren't getting that a year ago at any point, and that was Britvittables has taken that on his shoulders, due to the failure, the higher have set the trail.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_02]: That is not the case with at least some of these Washington state games.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_02]: I've got back and watched in the last couple of weeks, like the Texas Tech Game, which is available on YouTube, a big extended clip of the Boise State Game.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, even if they didn't score, you were going, okay, that was like an easy pitching catch for material to get them.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, and rhythm, that stuff was lacking a year ago.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_02]: Material talked a lot at SEC meeting days about being able to take his check down.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_02]: She really liked the prospect of jade not if he's a check down.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_02]: Taylor Tade, I'm still out there earning snaps.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_02]: If he's able to do that, he's a check down.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_02]: Say your Robinson show that he can catch the ball.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_02]: The backfield will be comfortable.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_02]: But if if John material is going to be able to take those shots and take advantage of it, whether the receivers are great, but otherwise.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna have to have time.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_02]: And when you look at it, eventually we will, the only guy a year ago boys that started every game, only position, right guard that didn't have at least three starters, Troy Everett is healthy coming into fall camp.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_02]: So that's a good sign as he's gonna battle with Jake Michaelett Center.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_02]: But when you look at it, Carson,
- 41:32[SPEAKER_02]: Three spots at least, both tackles and left guard feel like a really, really intriguing battle, but I think I can make the argument with you that all five spots are going to be fully up for grabs on this offensive line from practice one all the way into leaving the cotton balls.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's the little being both time line.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_02]: You find your five usually by week seven.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I would agree with that.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: And that kind of has to be the case with how much instability there was last year, how many players they added, obviously getting the duo of Stanford transfers and Derek Simmons.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_01]: So there should be a lot of competition.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I think if nothing else, the Illinois state game is a great opportunity to get all of those guys into the rotation, see who does what, see who's best with this.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: what combinations work best for the Sooners.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_01]: They probably won't have their firm.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: This is our starting line by the Michigan game.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_01]: But I love the opportunity that a game against a team like Illinois State, a good FCS team, but shouldn't stick around with the Sooners for too long in a home game season opener, should be able to out physical them.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: So getting some reps from just about everybody on the line and game one, I think will be huge for Betembo.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: maybe they won't have to try out nine different starting lineups in the first nine games of the season just thinking out loud here, but that would be beneficial, material obviously would benefit from that, and so with the entire offense.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: I have a quick question about the offensive line, and I raise this at some point, I was previewing the position battle coming up, does Bill Beaton Bowen Kevin Wilson?
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, does Kevin Wilson come in and say,
- 43:09[SPEAKER_00]: for Betchy, I'm not impressed by him at all.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: Because he's a new set of eyes, or not just to pick up for Betchy, but anybody, anybody that play Logan Hall, and what's he, I've seen the best of the best.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are not it yet.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_00]: We got some coaching to do to make him better.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_00]: But the real question becomes does Oklahoma, we saw with Logan Hall last week, sorry, last season, Logan Hall and Heath Ozeito on the left side.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: They came in and kind of stabilized things at the same time as Troy Everett came in at center.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so they got the left side of that line rebuilt along with Fibetchi State on the right side.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: Suddenly the offense started playing better after the South Carolina game I think it was.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: So do they go with those two young guys who are kind of established themselves and are having upward trajectory?
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: Or do they go with the, you like a sexton and Jake Taylor who are older, have a little more experience?
- 44:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, might have, might have a better grasp of the offense.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: you know, a lot more experience.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: Or do they go with the the five star and the Fassusian, the four star fogey at those positions?
- 44:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because there's there's three different ways you can go.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's like these guys played well last year.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are our senior leaders.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are our future.
- 44:24[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd love to see what's in the be a fly on the wall of the staff room and the offensive line to see which way they go with that.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it'll be fascinating, because here a couple of weeks ago, we went through and did a ton of our, hey, our pre camp depth chart.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_02]: So we weren't projecting where we think it'll be game one.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_02]: We were projecting where we think it'll be day one of camp.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I know I sent the offensive line back and forth to you a couple of times, who, because on one hand, I feel bad putting a bunch of orders on that depth chart, because I don't, I have no problem rolling out of take.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_02]: I have no problem being like, yep, I was wrong on that, or I was right on that.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_02]: What I don't like is just like,
- 45:00[SPEAKER_02]: let's play this thing both ways but when you look at the the offensive line depth chart I think you have to because like the only guy I feel like fantastic about starting
- 45:11[SPEAKER_02]: game one is Eddie Peer Louis and he is not someone that played more than four games last year because Troy Everett and Jake Michael I think Troy Everett will start he's got the institutional advantage of you know learning the offense through the spring where Michael had to come in but Michael had played it Stanford like he's not a dummy right it he'll be able to pick that thing up pretty quick you look everywhere else and
- 45:33[SPEAKER_02]: Some of the injuries of guys that miss Springball, if you'll remember Logan Hallan and he those of both had shoulder cleanups, which meant that they couldn't try to take the improvements they made toward the end of last season and then have that every single day and build on that throughout Springball.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_02]: So like what is a sexton and Hallan
- 45:52[SPEAKER_02]: What does that battle look like of a guy in sexy that was able to be back in the mix versus a guy, this son of a kind of coming off the men, you look at very, very similar on the right side of the line, Derek Simmons at Wright Tackle, a Western Carolina transfer who I probably wouldn't have penciled in as like a day one starter when he committed, but then you look at the back that Jake Taylor, who we've yet to see the anywhere close to the best of Jake Taylor, because he was behind good offensive tackles, then last year even when he played
- 46:22[SPEAKER_02]: He was dealing with multiple injuries.
- 46:24[SPEAKER_02]: And so you look at what is Simmons, Jake Taylor, Fassusia on the left of the right.
- 46:29[SPEAKER_02]: In a weird way, the injuries at Tackle met the Fassusia was thrust into a lot more steps than maybe he would have gotten during the spring.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_02]: So that's interesting.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_02]: And then it's like very similar.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_02]: Heat those eye to come on off of it.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_02]: What does that mean for an Osida eddie pair of the wee battle at left guard?
- 46:44[SPEAKER_02]: Where Eddie was parked while Fassusia was playing right guard.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a big proponent always that the like, just because you're a returning production, does it mean you want that to be returning production?
- 46:53[SPEAKER_02]: So like if Heath comes back in and can pick that up, then I think you need to look at, is there a way that someone can pass for that to you?
- 47:00[SPEAKER_02]: I think that'd be like good news for the ceiling in the line.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_02]: The thing car so that it all comes back in is this.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_02]: Bill Beanbow, traditionally, does not like to trust those young guys early.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_02]: But the last two years, he's had some missed experience.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_02]: Mixed experience with that two years ago.
- 47:19[SPEAKER_02]: By the time I was staying in Cincinnati, Caden Green, the true freshman, who before Presusi and Fogia at the time, Caden Green was the highest sign or he'd ever had.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_02]: Kane Green slotted in and became a really key part of that line, especially during the Texas game.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_02]: Now, one of the big differences between, like throwing a faussi out there next to a Osider Paraly is that Kane Green was parked in between Walter Rouse, who was a veteran of college football, even his first year Oklahoma, and a very, very experienced center.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_02]: uh... was at rame and rame there so that that was the difference is that you have two guys on the side of that the last year by the end of it you had the the whole fresh left side of the line with halon those items so i do wondercars that that something that being bows now had two years of
- 48:03[SPEAKER_02]: You're in a college football playoff race.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully, fingers crossed two years ago, and you fall at Kansas or OSU, or you might be in the mix to go to the big top championship game, or you weren't in the mix there.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_02]: Last year, you're in the SEC with a couple of underclassments.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if that's enough for Beatinbo to trust it a little more, or he immediately goes back to the old ways.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_02]: We'd like to bring Fassucy along halfway through the year, but we're going to go with veteran guys, because that's what Beatinbo's usually done.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_01]: It'll definitely be interesting to see, especially in this era of college sports, where transferings become so normalized, they want to give players like the Suci incentive to stay, and maybe that is early playing time, especially, especially in the games against Kent State Temple, Illinois State.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that seems like prime time for him, Owen Hollandberg, Ryan Foge, some of the other young guys on the line to get some reps.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_01]: Show what they can do, see if they can really translate to the college level,
- 49:00[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I've always had this take that positions like offensive line, dn, not the skill position guys.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_01]: Usually the star ranking means a little bit more, like you're less likely to just be a total bust if you're an offensive lineman in your quarterback receiver.
- 49:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's easier to grade.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_01]: You can kind of grade based on that natural athleticist, some size.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_01]: Fassusia has both of those things.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like Batonbo
- 49:26[SPEAKER_01]: Whether the offensive lines good or bad, they're going to want to find ways to shuttle him in, just with the size he brings, athleticism, skill, there's a reason all recruiting sites had him so highly ranked.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, even if he's not game one starter finding ways to get him involved, I think would be huge.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder too, how what Kevin Wilson's input is going to be as a guy who's been around so many unbelievably great offensive lines who's been the coach or the coordinator.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_00]: I wonder what his input's going to be with Beatinbo.
- 49:57[SPEAKER_00]: Surely we all know they're going to be on the same page, ultimately.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_00]: But let's just say, the scenario comes up where Beatonmo says, well, this, this was my best left tackle last year.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_00]: This is my most experienced left tackle.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go with the battle between these two guys.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: And Kevin Wilson comes up and goes, have you really, I didn't recruit him and I haven't really coached him yet, but look at Fassusi.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: Look how good he is.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_00]: Look at his upside.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: You know, does, does the assistant offensive line coach go to the head coach?
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: for inventables who hired him, right, and say, for sushi needs to play.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_00]: This guy, his ceiling is untouchable.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I just wonder, I'm not pointing or casting dispersions or anything.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying the dynamic that's going to exist between those two really strong type of personality offensive line coaches could be interesting to watch.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_02]: you know for sure she's got a good head on her shoulders too because it's a Chelsea guy so uh... on that on the sushi side of things it kind of falls in line with and i wrote this on saturday i think we i know i wrote on saturday because i was at little hardsfield uh... it might have published on monday the days kind of run together put uh... part of what i wrote it wasn't quite a full on column but it kind of got there by the end of it was
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: For Brett Vittables, this is a maker break here.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_02]: And what did he do?
- 51:12[SPEAKER_02]: He said, I'm going to be bold.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to hand the keys to the Ferrari that is an Oklahoma offense with the Oklahoma offense should be to a twenty nine year old who's had four years of college football, play calling experience.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_02]: And for Bill Beanbow, who we know that whatever five he picks is going to be a better unit by the end of the year than where it starts, all that stuff.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_02]: Follow the example of your head coach, your talent.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_02]: a Jacob Sexton is in that group, a Troy Everett's, but the highest ceiling group has any peer the week in it.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_02]: The highest ceiling group probably might be either Sexton or Halin and Fassucy, that kind of stuff.
- 51:49[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like every four years, Alice used throwed out a freshman offensive tackle in the SEC and three years later, that guy's like a number one overall draft pick type thing.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_02]: The freshman can thrive in this league if you know that they've got that kind of mental makeup.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_02]: To save everything here, it's not going to get done by playing it safe, and that would be my attitude to Fireville Beanbow.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_02]: He also gets paid a lot more than I and has forgotten more about offensive line play than I'll ever know.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_02]: So we shall see as that goes, the other spot on the offensive quickly.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_02]: Jade, not going to be your starter.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to be curious at running back.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like where does the Jemontae Barnes, Taylor, Tatum, Xavier Robinson?
- 52:29[SPEAKER_02]: And frankly, we wrote about the titans and and everything that Burnt Minibles had to say about the titans guys.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_02]: Caden Helms is a great dude.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_02]: Love talking to him.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to be bought in on the Caden Helms off season for the fifth time until we see that happen.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_02]: I'm also not going to be a trusty guy from Pittsburgh State or kind of saw state until I see them at Titan making an impact.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know what to do with the Titans.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that makes me bad at this because I don't have a big overarching thing.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_02]: I'm expecting that production of.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_02]: They need it to come from those other guys that running room where running back room where there is talent cars.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_02]: But it feels like for the first time since Eric Gray was the one in Jvante Barnes was the two.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_02]: Jade knots the one, and it's on everybody else to either take carries away from him or shove everybody else out of the rotation by saying if it's not Jade knot, I need to be the guy with the football in my hand.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_01]: I do like the depth of the running back room overall.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_01]: Seeing guys like Jafonte Balmern's Xavier Robinson look to really good at the end of last season, Taylor Tatum still on the roster.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of those guys could be starters at high level programs, but having a guy like Jade and not sure he hasn't ever done it consistently against SEC opponents.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_01]: But he looked really dang good when he was healthy at Cal kind of a versatile guy once he hits a crazy is pretty much gone can also catch passes that's huge for this new pass first offense with our buckle and then having guys like Robinson who's so young which really good, especially against Alabama last year.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think that make up.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it does out a little healthy pressure to Jade and not seeing like, yeah, you got some really good backs behind you like you better live up to this.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that's good for him.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that's gonna make him perform a little bit better and then obviously when you need to let a rest, oh, you can feel comfortable giving the ball to guys like Robinson Barnes, Tatum.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_01]: So it's an impressive core, I think.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, did you bring up the tight ends again?
- 54:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the tight ends exist.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think we'll talk coverage on the tight ends at Oklahoma.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm sorry.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_02]: And tell Joe John Finley's group is like, positively impacting games.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of names.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_02]: None of them have played any legitimate like big-time football.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a complete agreement, complete agreement with that big opportunity for guys like Kayden McIntyre and Kayden Helms.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_00]: Big opportunity for our manager and canick, you know, he could be one of the leaders.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_00]: He could step up as one of the leaders on the offense.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: because of his personality and his, you know, general, now he's played a lot on defense.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's a popular guy, he's got his great head on his shoulders, comes from a great family.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_00]: He could be one of the guys on defense on offense to be a leader, if he'll step into that position, if he'll produce.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_00]: If he can catch fifteen, twenty balls this year as a, you know, in and out, kind of tied in, play both on the end of the line and maybe in the slot a little bit, maybe move him around a little bit.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's something that would really help this offense, having a guy that you can rely on.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, those other guys, you don't see a lot of productivity at their previous stops.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: You see a lot of blocking tight ends, a lot of jumbo tight ends, a lot of third tight ends.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_00]: So, a big opportunity for CANDIC for me.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_02]: something to our buckle very creative with that two things out of his titans a year ago one like you said who big portions of the running game and while they didn't have this massive role when it comes to receptions and yards they did have I think seven touchdown spread across three different titans a year ago so if they can find red zone threat
- 56:06[SPEAKER_02]: likes to make that happen.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_02]: Jared Canak's been in the inzone before Jared Canak has when you talk about special team stuff like that.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_02]: His contributions in Lincoln Nebraska are the most important thing at Oklahoma tight end is done since Brad Willis has been around and I'm talking about him playing as a cheetah on defense.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_02]: for a second half.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_02]: So it's been our buckle was legitimately very excited about the Titan progress at the end of Springball all that stuff.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_02]: They may be one of the best position groups on the team come November and tell that happens though.
- 56:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's a big question mark for me and I've been burned a couple of times by expecting Joe John Finley to improve that group.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_02]: He's yet to show that he can do any Titan coaching
- 56:46[SPEAKER_02]: at Oklahoma, which I think is a big credit to Braden Willis and Shane Beamer for what Braden Willis did in at twenty twenty two.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_02]: Finally, guys, let's close here.
- 56:55[SPEAKER_02]: Let's take a step back in the comfortable world still, but we've had all of the invited between conference commissioners as far as it comes to college football playoff models and all that stuff.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're team will let you know when there's some movement on the college football playoff model post twenty twenty six.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_02]: There has been movement though with the College Sports Commission in ILO Go, which is the big in ILO Clearinghouse.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_02]: We heard so much as you see media day, Lane Kiffin talked about, we're operating with a hard cat all this stuff.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_02]: Well,
- 57:28[SPEAKER_02]: As the first couple of deals went through the clearinghouse, Ross Dellinger's been on top of all the support over at Yahoo talking about, every school is in an out like a test balloon of will this get approved?
- 57:40[SPEAKER_02]: Will this not get approved?
- 57:41[SPEAKER_02]: Well, there was some news here over the last twenty, four, four, eight hours.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_02]: It appears at the power conferences and the lawyers for the House settlement and the College Sports Commission have gotten together.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_02]: They have made an agreement or come to an agreement that the College Sports Commission
- 57:56[SPEAKER_02]: We'll treat collectives as businesses.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_02]: What does that mean?
- 57:59[SPEAKER_02]: Collectives are not going to go away.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_02]: Collectives can be a legitimate part of NIL.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_02]: Will there be more scrutiny on market rates, things like that?
- 58:09[SPEAKER_02]: That's to be seen.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_02]: But basically, we have a soft cap.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_02]: Your soft cap is going to be the revenue sharing.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_02]: And then if your collectives can get those deals through NIL, go, you'll still be able to go over that.
- 58:21[SPEAKER_02]: twenty-and-a-half million, twenty-and-a-half billion for athletics, a lot of that diverted to college football, and we'll still have collective as a part of life, which kind of pairs hate in hand, who've with Oklahoma bringing the NIL and stuff inhouse, the big partnership with Leerfield that was announced while we were at SEC Media Days, as far as bringing one Oklahoma together under Leerfield and trying to streamline that situation.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_02]: That's not going to go anywhere, but you would hope that maybe it gets a little less wild wild last, even though they're still going to be collectives in NIL and all that stuff.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I'm going to spend the next hour reading the last three stories to you guys from Ross DeLinger.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's been on top of this like nobody in the history of college football has ever been on top of the topic.
- 59:05[SPEAKER_00]: Ross is the, Ross is the man.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm not going to read to you.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: I will read a little bit because this is
- 59:12[SPEAKER_00]: you know, the scope of this thing is so huge.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's so huge and it's changing, you know, talking to people about the new athletic director and talking to jokes to Gleone or talking to Sanky last week, whoever it is, they're like, everybody's saying, well, it's changing so fast, right, dot, dot, dot.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_00]: And it is, it absolutely is changing so fast.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_00]: We went into this week yesterday, thinking one thing that the power conferences in the College Sports Commission were going to be one of the attorneys, one of the attorneys, you know, one of the plaintiffs attorneys there, that said it right, said we don't want this, we don't want college sports to become a bare knuckle brawl.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_00]: So he said this, you know, this thing, this agreement avoids that.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_00]: That was Monday.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_00]: And in Tuesday, you know, Ross has another story today.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just making a quick note of it here.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: This is from the Twitter account of Mitt Winter, who I follow on Twitter.
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's a sports attorney.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's basically following Ross for to boil down what Ross's, you know, thousand word epics are about.
- 1:00:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is a tweet from Mitt Winter.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_00]: He says a bill has been introduced into the Senate.
- 1:00:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, stop right there and think about that for a second.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_00]: A bill has been introduced into the Senate that would allow college athletes to unionize and collectively bargain.
- 1:00:38[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to turn college athletics into a union like the NFLPA, right?
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_00]: It would amend the National Labor Relations Act so that it covers private and public universities.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so that's basically everybody.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_00]: Previously, it was like Northwestern and a couple of small, small private schools were getting in and saying, we should be allowed to unionize.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_00]: Well, this bill has been introduced in the Senate that would allow them all, all sports, all student athletes, all universities all across the country to unionize.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_00]: It would require the National Labor Relations Board to recognize schools and conferences as multi-employer bargaining units.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about professional sports here.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like don't even use the word college anymore in my opinion.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they'll promise sooners.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, they're in the state of Oklahoma.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_00]: Are they affiliated with the University of Oklahoma?
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_00]: You said I'm saying what's the point?
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_00]: What's the relevance of saying this is a school team?
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_00]: These are all professionals now.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_00]: Just, it's, like I said, it's changed so fast and so dramatically in the past just three years, year and a half, six months, thirty days, two days, crazy.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: It's part of what, you know, jokes of the own talk about what I asked him about, you know, what is on the next horizon and he first start out.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if it's going to be employees, student athletes, all that stuff, but you got to find a way to somehow square this circle with the athlete in the fan base of
- 1:02:09[SPEAKER_02]: Why am I at Oklahoma?
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_02]: Why am I at Texas?
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_02]: Why am I at Ohio State?
- 1:02:14[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I go to Oklahoma engineering school because it's a good engineering school that can help you get to the next.
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's something that people can get as long as you're finding way to connect with Oklahoma.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_02]: You're part of the campus community.
- 1:02:26[SPEAKER_02]: That's the same thing that athletics is going to have to do.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_02]: People I think are going to be fine with understanding why do you go play football, Oklahoma?
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_02]: Because you want to get to the NFL.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_02]: You got to make money whether you're an employee of Oklahoma or not.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to have to find a way to bring those things together where
- 1:02:39[SPEAKER_02]: You're still involved.
- 1:02:40[SPEAKER_02]: They've been able to do that to a certain extent, even as things have changed.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_02]: It'll be just to see if they're going to continue to be able to do that.
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_02]: All I know is this.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_02]: When you talk about collective bargaining stuff like that, one name that Randall Stevenson should scratch off the big board is anyone involved with the NFLPA because they clearly have screwed that thing up left right on the center.
- 1:02:59[SPEAKER_02]: Shout out to our friend Pablo Torrey for shutting the spotlight on Matt.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_00]: That's a good point.
- 1:03:04[SPEAKER_00]: I loved your question to Josie and I loved his answer, but he did say, and it stuck out to me a little bit, he did say that if we could just keep education at the center of this thing.
- 1:03:16[SPEAKER_00]: That's not what most of your student athletes care about.
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_00]: Now, a lot of new women soccer does, softball does, you know what I mean?
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_00]: Women's basketball, they care about the education, golf, tennis, track.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_00]: The education aspect is enormous.
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_00]: But boom, basketball, man's basketball, that's much.
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_02]: It'll be interesting.
- 1:03:37[SPEAKER_02]: All that and oh, oh, something you said.
- 1:03:41[SPEAKER_02]: Ross Dowager's epics.
- 1:03:42[SPEAKER_02]: Gentlemen, I can't wait to tell you in twenty twenty eight coming to an IMAX near you, the commission.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to have a Christopher Nolan turn all of Rossdale and your stories into a thrilling three hour epic coming shot in whatever new IMAX thing that they invent for him.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_02]: The commission again, look for that trailer and I assume Brad Pitt will star in that.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_02]: I would hope I don't know who's going to play Ross.
- 1:04:09[SPEAKER_02]: If you're looking for an extra to walk behind the camera.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_02]: So you can just use Carson.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think because I think we filled that role pretty well last week.
- 1:04:16[SPEAKER_02]: Bye, Frank.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, we did.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_01]: We absolutely did.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_02]: Brushed it.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_02]: for all the continuing updates all that fun stuff because you like like I've said before we all got into this because we like telling stories and we like sports and if I had like this part of it I probably was going to cover government or business or I'd be a front office sports writer and I
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_02]: Really don't care to that.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_02]: So just head to all capacitors on to side.com.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_02]: All the big stuff that comes for will try to digest it down into a readable version.
- 1:04:48[SPEAKER_02]: If not, then you know, we'll just wait for the big stuff that the press releases to get some out.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_02]: You can find us there.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_02]: Oklahoma suitors on a side.com or you can follow us at suitors on a side on an
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's formerly Twitter, John, John, Eve, Hoover.
- 1:05:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm at Under School of Rhyme, Chapman Carson's Carson team.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_02]: The deal will be back next Wednesday, everything is happening over this week, previewing the deep and special teams.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_02]: Talkin' about camp, because we'll be days away from the Sooners.
- 1:05:16[SPEAKER_02]: Hit the practice field next time.
- 1:05:17[SPEAKER_02]: We talk to all the Sooners on our side podcast and tell them, though, we'll see it be good.
- 1:05:21[SPEAKER_02]: Have a week and everybody enjoy the summer, stay dry, stay cool.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_02]: We'll talk to you next week.
