- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes, alongside Lance Lynn, Matt Holliday, Kyle Gibson had
- 0:15Speaker 1: other business to attend to, but with us today Cardinal
- 0:19Speaker 1: starting pitcher Matthew Libertore and I think it's a real treat.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Hello Matthew. How are you?
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'm doing well?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Thank you guys for having me on.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Hey you can say Happy New Year. You haven't talked
- 0:30Speaker 4: to him till today, so that's fine.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Happy New Year, Happy New Year.
- 0:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So, yeah, it was great last year eight and twelve
- 0:39Speaker 1: as a starter four point twenty one era. Your first
- 0:42Speaker 1: full year as a starter, you had twenty nine starts.
- 0:46Speaker 1: There were some ups and downs, this happens every season.
- 0:49Speaker 1: A little issue with VLO that you said wasn't necessarily physical,
- 0:52Speaker 1: it was mechanical. So my first question, and I think
- 0:55Speaker 1: Lance would back this up that it's a brilliant one.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What is your takeaway from your first full season starting games?
- 1:05Speaker 5: Yeah, last year did a lot of learning, probably more
- 1:08Speaker 5: than I ever had in my career before. I think
- 1:12Speaker 5: one of the biggest things.
- 1:13Speaker 2: From me was adding on a few extra pounds just.
- 1:15Speaker 5: To give myself some more durability, you know, coming out
- 1:18Speaker 5: of that relief roll in twenty four having thrown like
- 1:21Speaker 5: eighty six eighty seven innings and then jumping all the
- 1:24Speaker 5: way up to one hundred and fifty two the following year,
- 1:27Speaker 5: I just felt like I wanted to add a little
- 1:29Speaker 5: more durability to my body, and so I've done that
- 1:34Speaker 5: this offseason, and then just making sure that my mechanics
- 1:37Speaker 5: are dialed.
- 1:37Speaker 2: In and know.
- 1:39Speaker 5: What kind of things I can do to get myself
- 1:42Speaker 5: back into a good spot if I were to fall
- 1:44Speaker 5: out a sink again, because I don't. I think it
- 1:46Speaker 5: would be foolish to think that that will never happen again,
- 1:49Speaker 5: or that I'll never feel that way again. So really
- 1:52Speaker 5: just creating some systems and some strategies to help me
- 1:55Speaker 5: better deal with it the next time I face it.
- 1:58Speaker 4: We've talked about this earlier this year. Everyone talks about, Hey,
- 2:02Speaker 4: what you saw from Libby's first year starting compared to this,
- 2:06Speaker 4: and that people don't understand, like you can start all
- 2:09Speaker 4: through the minor leagues. What was the difference from like hey,
- 2:12Speaker 4: in the minor leagues to the big league day in
- 2:14Speaker 4: and day out rotation compared to like that physical grind,
- 2:18Speaker 4: mental grind. You can do all the what your probably
- 2:20Speaker 4: most starts you ever had in the minor leagues was
- 2:22Speaker 4: twenty five to twenty seven in a season. But it's
- 2:26Speaker 4: still different. Even though you know you're only gonna have
- 2:29Speaker 4: thirty to thirty three if you do a full year,
- 2:31Speaker 4: it's still a different type of grind. Can you explain
- 2:34Speaker 4: a little bit of the things that you learn that
- 2:36Speaker 4: you can make it even better in year two of
- 2:38Speaker 4: fully doing it?
- 2:40Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think the best way I could
- 2:42Speaker 5: describe the difference is, you know, I got to start
- 2:45Speaker 5: the future game when I was in the minor leagues,
- 2:48Speaker 5: and I feel like every start in the big leagues
- 2:51Speaker 5: was similar to that feeling up that start, which is
- 2:54Speaker 5: one start that whole year as a triple A player,
- 2:58Speaker 5: And so you know, there's four thousand fans in the
- 3:01Speaker 5: stadium every night, You're playing meaningful games every night against
- 3:05Speaker 5: the absolute best competition in the entire world. So the
- 3:08Speaker 5: stakes are definitely heightened, the expectations are heightened, and uh,
- 3:12Speaker 5: it's a lot more stressful on the body and on
- 3:14Speaker 5: the mind than throwing them minor league games, for sure. Uh.
- 3:18Speaker 5: You know, I think I've put a lot of time
- 3:20Speaker 5: and effort into the mental side of the game this
- 3:22Speaker 5: aw season. Uh, you know, I have a mental skills
- 3:25Speaker 5: coach that I work with. We're extremely organized. Uh, trying
- 3:29Speaker 5: to do as much visualization as possible. Really, just trying
- 3:33Speaker 5: to put myself mentally in those positions before I ever
- 3:36Speaker 5: have to be in them, so that when I when
- 3:38Speaker 5: I do face those circumstances, you know, it doesn't feel
- 3:41Speaker 5: like it's the first time when it's taken me by surprise.
- 3:45Speaker 5: You know, I want to step on that nound the
- 3:47Speaker 5: first game of the year and feel like it's the thousands.
- 3:50Speaker 5: It's the thousandth time that I'm throwing that game already.
- 3:52Speaker 5: So there've been a big emphasis on the mental side
- 3:55Speaker 5: of things as well as the physical and mechanical side
- 3:57Speaker 5: of things.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Also some changes for the Cardinals starting rotation. Sonny Gray
- 4:03Speaker 1: traded away that bringing dustin May now you're a guy
- 4:07Speaker 1: though with the years you've been at it, you were
- 4:09Speaker 1: in the bullpen before you became a starter. Uh, is
- 4:13Speaker 1: there more of a leadership role for you? Do you think?
- 4:15Speaker 1: I know, you guys got great coaches. You know, Dusty
- 4:19Speaker 1: is a great pitching coach, But does that kind of
- 4:22Speaker 1: kind of add to what's put on your plate to
- 4:25Speaker 1: be sort of a leader, because probably gonna be. And
- 4:27Speaker 1: there's other veterans in the mix too, but there's gonna
- 4:29Speaker 1: be some young guys in there.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Yeah, it's definitely gonna be the youngest clubhouse I've ever
- 4:35Speaker 5: been a part of. You know, we don't have anybody
- 4:38Speaker 5: like lyonce who has been around and done this for
- 4:41Speaker 5: a very long time, has so much knowledge and wisdom
- 4:44Speaker 5: and you know, has really just seen all the different
- 4:47Speaker 5: sides of this game. Uh. You know, Fortunately for me
- 4:50Speaker 5: in my short career so far, I feel like I've
- 4:53Speaker 5: I've had a lot of experience with different things, and
- 4:56Speaker 5: I've gone through a lot of different things which I
- 4:58Speaker 5: think can provide some value for or some guys that
- 5:01Speaker 5: might go through something similar. So, you know, if I'm
- 5:04Speaker 5: able to help in any way, I'd obviously love to
- 5:07Speaker 5: step into that role. I'm by no means am I
- 5:10Speaker 5: going to call myself a bit or say that, you know,
- 5:13Speaker 5: I should be the leader of the clubhouse.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:15Speaker 5: I want everybody as a group to be better than
- 5:18Speaker 5: they were yesterday, and so if there's a role that
- 5:20Speaker 5: I can step into that helps facilitate that.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Somewhat you know, I'm all for it. No, that's awesome.
- 5:28Speaker 4: I mean you're looking at what Jim as you know,
- 5:31Speaker 4: you're looking at a spot where you've got dm A
- 5:33Speaker 4: coming in who's obviously known as being a great guy.
- 5:36Speaker 4: You got a good group of young guys that you've
- 5:38Speaker 4: come up with or that you've been able to be
- 5:40Speaker 4: a part of them coming up to the big leagues
- 5:42Speaker 4: with what are you looking forward to as being a
- 5:45Speaker 4: part of a deep staff this year but also a
- 5:47Speaker 4: staff that's all trying to truly establish themselves of every
- 5:51Speaker 4: day the ability to make starts every five days and
- 5:56Speaker 4: being part of that. Have you talked to Dusty a
- 5:58Speaker 4: little bit about, Hey, this is what I experienced last year,
- 6:01Speaker 4: this is what I'm going to you know, hoping to
- 6:03Speaker 4: improve on this year, and then how that can help
- 6:06Speaker 4: the guys around you, whether it's McGreevy or whether it's
- 6:08Speaker 4: Leahy going to transfer, you know, maybe in to get
- 6:11Speaker 4: some starts this year. So you're kind of a guy
- 6:14Speaker 4: who's done it all so far in a short period
- 6:16Speaker 4: of time. You got the short end of the stick
- 6:19Speaker 4: at times too, kind of like Layy did. So I
- 6:22Speaker 4: think there's a you know, and it even Polante's dealt
- 6:25Speaker 4: with some of the same things you've dealt with too,
- 6:27Speaker 4: So you guys have all I guess McGreevy has too,
- 6:30Speaker 4: if you start looking at the way everybody's been bounced
- 6:32Speaker 4: around and done stuff. So you guys got a group
- 6:35Speaker 4: of people that want to prove that you belong in
- 6:38Speaker 4: rotations and that everyone knows you.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Guys have that ability.
- 6:41Speaker 4: How are you guys going to kind of bond together
- 6:43Speaker 4: here to make sure everybody is going in the same direction. So, hey,
- 6:47Speaker 4: we belong here and we can we can help carrying
- 6:49Speaker 4: his staff as this group.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, I think we've got
- 6:54Speaker 5: a bunch of guys that do believe in themselves and
- 6:57Speaker 5: do believe that they are bigly starting the church, which
- 6:59Speaker 5: I think is a great place to start from. I
- 7:02Speaker 5: think having a group of relatively younger guys, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 5: DestinE maybe maybe a year or two older than some
- 7:08Speaker 5: of us, but having a group of relatively younger guys,
- 7:11Speaker 5: I think it's gonna be good because they bring a
- 7:13Speaker 5: certain hunger, you know. Besides Dustin, I wouldn't say that
- 7:17Speaker 5: anybody in our our rotation has been doing this for
- 7:21Speaker 5: a very long time, and so you have a lot
- 7:23Speaker 5: of guys that are really looking to establish themselves and
- 7:26Speaker 5: make a name for themselves and really define what their
- 7:29Speaker 5: role is in that rotation, including myself, and I think
- 7:32Speaker 5: that that can be a really fun place to work
- 7:35Speaker 5: from and grow from because there's competition amongst us, and
- 7:40Speaker 5: not that we're competing against each other, but you know,
- 7:43Speaker 5: we're all pushing each other to be the best version
- 7:46Speaker 5: of ourselves possible, and I think that that's a really
- 7:48Speaker 5: good breeding ground for growth and development.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I think we brought this up last week on the
- 7:54Speaker 1: show Lance. I'm pretty sure on the last show we did.
- 7:57Speaker 1: But opening day Starter, I think it means a lot
- 8:00Speaker 1: to fans. I don't know if it means a lot
- 8:03Speaker 1: to younger pictures, but your name was drawn out maybe
- 8:06Speaker 1: May does.
- 8:07Speaker 4: It means a lot of every starting picture Jim?
- 8:09Speaker 1: So does it matter to you, if be honest with us,
- 8:12Speaker 1: do you want to be the Cardinals opening day Starter?
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think that's a fair question.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm not gonna lie on it and make something
- 8:20Speaker 5: I've thought about since the season ended. You know, whether
- 8:23Speaker 5: that that honor is given to me or not is
- 8:27Speaker 5: not one hundred percent in my control. But I'd be
- 8:30Speaker 5: lying if I'm sad if I said that, I'm not
- 8:32Speaker 5: doing everything in my power to force their hand on that.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Yeah, and Jim, you don't want you don't want any
- 8:38Speaker 4: other answer to be.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Said than that right there.
- 8:41Speaker 4: That tells you what kind of competitor Libby is, but
- 8:44Speaker 4: also what he believes his abilities are. He believes that
- 8:47Speaker 4: he's an ace and he has a stuff and we've saw,
- 8:50Speaker 4: as he said, we saw times of that last year
- 8:52Speaker 4: when he was able to do it. But that's the
- 8:54Speaker 4: growing process is how can we sustain it for thirty
- 8:58Speaker 4: plus starts throughout a year and he's doing the things
- 9:00Speaker 4: that he needs to do mentally, My question would be
- 9:02Speaker 4: going forward physically, when you're talking about pitch usage and stuff,
- 9:06Speaker 4: is that Is there anything that was glaring that you
- 9:09Speaker 4: and the industry and the pitching staff coaches have talked
- 9:12Speaker 4: about this offseason that might be able to make maybe
- 9:14Speaker 4: things uptick. Maybe a righty or a lefty maybe help
- 9:17Speaker 4: you get through games a little easier. Is there anything
- 9:20Speaker 4: that's kind of stuck out that might be a thing
- 9:22Speaker 4: going into spring training?
- 9:24Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:24Speaker 5: I mean, I know my slaughter is going to be
- 9:26Speaker 5: my best wipeout pitch against right handed hitter is and
- 9:29Speaker 5: I'll try and get into this without giving away too
- 9:31Speaker 5: many secrets in case any competition is watching.
- 9:34Speaker 3: But good idea. I like that I that a little
- 9:37Speaker 3: on the second half.
- 9:38Speaker 5: It turned into a kind of a blended cutter for me,
- 9:42Speaker 5: and I lost a lot of swing and miss because
- 9:44Speaker 5: of that. So really making sure that I'm homed in
- 9:47Speaker 5: on that shape and what that feels like coming out
- 9:49Speaker 5: of my hand to start the year, I think is
- 9:52Speaker 5: going to be very beneficial for me.
- 9:54Speaker 2: And then there is.
- 9:55Speaker 5: A potential extra pitch in the works now that I
- 10:01Speaker 5: think could help me quite a bit against right handed hitters.
- 10:05Speaker 5: I'll break it out in spring this year, but I've
- 10:06Speaker 5: been throning bullpens this offseason so far, and I think
- 10:10Speaker 5: that it could it could really be a weapon for me.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah, don't give a scouting report on that, but that's
- 10:15Speaker 1: good news that you've expanded the repertoire. We're going to
- 10:18Speaker 1: take a break right here. You're watching Cardinal Territory on

- 11:26Speaker 1: Jim Hayes, Lance Lynn. Our guest today is Matthew Libertor.
- 11:29Speaker 1: We appreciate him coming on. This is Cardinal territory. So Matthew,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you're honest about you want to start opening day. You're
- 11:39Speaker 1: honest at You've added a pitch, but you're not going
- 11:42Speaker 1: to tell us what it is. We appreciate that. My
- 11:45Speaker 1: question is, do you set goals for yourself? Number goals,
- 11:50Speaker 1: and if they are could you share them with us?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Dude, I think the way I look at goal setting
- 11:58Speaker 5: is maybe a little different how other people do. I
- 12:01Speaker 5: wouldn't say that I choose numbers to look at by
- 12:04Speaker 5: the end of the season.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I think that can be somewhat missing. At times.
- 12:10Speaker 5: I try and judge my outings based off of what
- 12:12Speaker 5: we call on execution journal, And so you know, every pitch,
- 12:17Speaker 5: the only thing that you have the ability to control
- 12:19Speaker 5: is deciding what to throw in your commitment to throwing it,
- 12:22Speaker 5: and then your ability to execute on that commitment.
- 12:26Speaker 3: And so I'll go.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Back through every outing after and do this journal.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Where I watch each pitch and I think about what
- 12:33Speaker 5: I wanted to do with that pitch, where I wanted
- 12:35Speaker 5: to throw it, what the plan was, and did I
- 12:38Speaker 5: execute or did I not? And so you know, if
- 12:41Speaker 5: I can maintain above a seventy percent execution rate outing
- 12:45Speaker 5: after outing, I'm usually in a pretty good spot. And
- 12:47Speaker 5: we will track and one on one counts two I
- 12:51Speaker 5: started tracking two strike kill counts a little bit last year,
- 12:55Speaker 5: but that's how i'd judge it. And so I'd say
- 12:58Speaker 5: I have a threashold that I would to stay abolved
- 13:01Speaker 5: throughout the course of the season. And I think that
- 13:04Speaker 5: if I do that, the numbers will take care of themselves.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Now, that's a good way to do it. Back when
- 13:12Speaker 4: I was coming up, Jim, you're asking him, is it
- 13:14Speaker 4: what's your numbers? I want to make thirty three starts,
- 13:17Speaker 4: I want to throw two hundred innings, and I want
- 13:18Speaker 4: to win fifteen games. Right, those were kind of the
- 13:22Speaker 4: ideas of the old days when you came up. But
- 13:25Speaker 4: the way your process oriented, which I don't think fans
- 13:28Speaker 4: understand some of it, some of them do, like old fans.
- 13:31Speaker 4: If you do what you're talking about right now, you're
- 13:33Speaker 4: going to look up at the end of the year,
- 13:35Speaker 4: you're going to be above five hundred pitcher with ten
- 13:38Speaker 4: plus wins, with you know, your one hundred and eighty
- 13:40Speaker 4: plus innings and your thirty plus starts. Because it's processed
- 13:44Speaker 4: day to day. You're a very process oriented person. Is
- 13:48Speaker 4: there anything that you've done to kind of I see
- 13:51Speaker 4: that you've you've added some things, right, You've added a
- 13:54Speaker 4: layer of it post start and all that too, which
- 13:56Speaker 4: is great for you because I feel like sometimes you
- 13:59Speaker 4: were a throat over you would go throw through things
- 14:01Speaker 4: instead of maybe using these abilities to think through things
- 14:05Speaker 4: so you don't have to throw as much to feel it.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I think you've gotten to the point now I'm hoping
- 14:10Speaker 4: or while we're talking, right, it's like, Okay, I know
- 14:12Speaker 4: what I struggled with my last start. Does that make
- 14:15Speaker 4: sense because I went through my postgame, my check my
- 14:19Speaker 4: checklist or whatever. Now is it, Hey, I can go
- 14:22Speaker 4: concentrate on these throws and I don't have to overthrow
- 14:25Speaker 4: to get to where I need to do. So hopefully
- 14:27Speaker 4: as the season goes on this year, it goes into, hey,
- 14:30Speaker 4: we don't have the dip, right, that's the big thing.
- 14:33Speaker 4: We don't want to worry about the dip, so we
- 14:34Speaker 4: can kind of slowly here and then we just keep
- 14:37Speaker 4: kind of.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Slowly going up.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Is that your hope that going into this season with
- 14:40Speaker 4: those processes that you've developed over the last year.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:44Speaker 5: I mean that in essence is the ultimate goal. You know,
- 14:49Speaker 5: I've always been a very hard.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Worker, and I've always been a big thinker.
- 14:53Speaker 5: And I've always been process oriented, but I've never been
- 14:56Speaker 5: as organized as I am now, So I think a
- 14:59Speaker 5: lot of times when things didn't go my way, I
- 15:01Speaker 5: always thought that I could outwork those problems. And while
- 15:04Speaker 5: that might work in high school and you're on a
- 15:06Speaker 5: seven day routine or in the minor leagues when you're
- 15:09Speaker 5: pitching once maybe twice a week, you can get away
- 15:12Speaker 5: with a lot of that stuff. But as we talked
- 15:14Speaker 5: about earlier, there's a different stress making them start every
- 15:17Speaker 5: five or six days in the big leagues in front
- 15:18Speaker 5: of forty thousand fans against the best hitters on the planet.
- 15:21Speaker 5: So you know, the goal of all my organization and
- 15:26Speaker 5: the filters that I put myself through after these outings
- 15:29Speaker 5: is to help me narrow down and really focus in
- 15:31Speaker 5: on the things that do need to be worked on,
- 15:34Speaker 5: so that I'm not spinning my tires working on things
- 15:37Speaker 5: that I'm already doing a really good job at and
- 15:39Speaker 5: now I'm putting myself behind the eight ball because i
- 15:41Speaker 5: have to play catch up, if that makes sense.
- 15:44Speaker 1: So, Libby, I want to thank you not only for
- 15:46Speaker 1: coming on but also showing us a different side of
- 15:50Speaker 1: Lance Lynn. Now I've known Lance for a long time.
- 15:53Speaker 1: His approach in terms of media, Gruff on this show
- 15:59Speaker 1: kind of kind of a wise guy, right, But with you,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I this is coach Lance Linn Like, it's a different
- 16:06Speaker 1: softer lanceln. So my question is what was Lance like
- 16:10Speaker 1: in the clubhouse working with the younger guys, because this,
- 16:14Speaker 1: for me is a real eye opener.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Yeah. I think what you're seeing is what you got
- 16:19Speaker 3: in the clubhouse.
- 16:21Speaker 5: You know, I don't want to give too much way,
- 16:24Speaker 5: but I think that you know, Lance is a big
- 16:25Speaker 5: teddy bear and when he pitches, he's the most intimidating
- 16:28Speaker 5: dude on the planet. I would never step in front
- 16:30Speaker 5: of him. But Lance one of my favorite people to
- 16:34Speaker 5: go talk to. Him and Kyle Gibson. I think we're
- 16:36Speaker 5: both tremendous human beings and always wanting to talk and
- 16:39Speaker 5: give advice and talk.
- 16:40Speaker 2: About their experiences and share.
- 16:42Speaker 5: What they know in an effort to try and help us.
- 16:45Speaker 5: And you know, I called Lance before the start of
- 16:47Speaker 5: the season last year when I got put into the rotation.
- 16:50Speaker 5: You know, I hadn't really done much scouting work in
- 16:52Speaker 5: my career before, and when I did, it did not
- 16:55Speaker 5: work very well for me. So we spent like an
- 16:57Speaker 5: hour and a half on the phone before my first
- 16:58Speaker 5: started the season, Latch, You're just figuring out how I
- 17:01Speaker 5: can look at hitters and how I can make all
- 17:03Speaker 5: the numbers make sense for me, and how they can
- 17:06Speaker 5: tell a story about who I'm facing and what that
- 17:08Speaker 5: means to me, and how what.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I should throw based off of those things.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Uh.
- 17:12Speaker 5: And that was one of the most valuable conversations I
- 17:14Speaker 5: had the entire season, and that happened before I threw
- 17:17Speaker 5: the first pitch of the year.
- 17:21Speaker 1: We think he called you a teddy bear.
- 17:26Speaker 4: Teddy bear, that's fine when your your teammates are your brothers, man,
- 17:30Speaker 4: and that's you know. And then there's times when, well,
- 17:33Speaker 4: as we know, Libby did a better job at being
- 17:36Speaker 4: able to get that out of me than save up
- 17:39Speaker 4: Polante of the world. And we loved Dre as much
- 17:43Speaker 4: as you know anyone can love Dre. But Dre likes
- 17:46Speaker 4: to poke the bear, and you'll get the bear Libby liked.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Libby had the ability to come to me and we're
- 17:51Speaker 4: gonna get the We'll get the teddy side of the bear,
- 17:53Speaker 4: not the not the grizzly. And that's where Palante would
- 17:57Speaker 4: get the grizzly more more because he kind of asked
- 17:59Speaker 4: for it, but Blonte likes that's what he wants. So
- 18:03Speaker 4: But and you know every edge, Jim as you know,
- 18:05Speaker 4: every guy on your team, everybody talks a different language.
- 18:08Speaker 4: And I told Libby this last year, and I think
- 18:12Speaker 4: I helped him talk to Dusty and Dusty's language at times.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Because every coach, every player has their way of processing
- 18:20Speaker 4: things and the things that they think do things the
- 18:22Speaker 4: right way. You have to find your way, and then
- 18:24Speaker 4: you have to be able to understand other people's ways
- 18:27Speaker 4: and then be able to explain that. And that's the
- 18:29Speaker 4: fun part of pitching, and the fun part of competing
- 18:32Speaker 4: is figuring out what makes guys pick, how they process things,
- 18:35Speaker 4: what they think they're good at, how to stick with
- 18:38Speaker 4: what they're good at, and also how to always improve
- 18:40Speaker 4: with a little bit of pieces that you can day
- 18:43Speaker 4: in and day out, like Libby is doing. And that's
- 18:45Speaker 4: the beauty of it. And that's why you know, we've
- 18:47Speaker 4: talked so highly of him here, Kyle and I have
- 18:49Speaker 4: because we've seen the process right when when Libby was
- 18:53Speaker 4: in the bullpen, he figured out why he was a
- 18:56Speaker 4: good reliever, but he was always picking brains on. Okay,
- 18:59Speaker 4: how can I translate this into starting, what's my process
- 19:02Speaker 4: to do it when I have to do it one
- 19:04Speaker 4: out of every five days, over and over again, and
- 19:07Speaker 4: how can I do those things? And he was doing
- 19:09Speaker 4: this research while he was getting people out in the bullpen.
- 19:12Speaker 4: And that's the thing that I loved about him. He
- 19:14Speaker 4: always knew, hey, I have the starter stuff. I know
- 19:17Speaker 4: my job right now is to get really or get
- 19:19Speaker 4: people out in the bullpen. But I'm going to be
- 19:21Speaker 4: a starter because I have that ability, So why not
- 19:24Speaker 4: learn as I'm doing both? And that was one thing
- 19:26Speaker 4: that I really enjoyed being his teammate and watching him
- 19:29Speaker 4: go through those processes. And I was able to do
- 19:31Speaker 4: it as a young kid myself starting in the bullpen,
- 19:34Speaker 4: so I had a little bit of background in that,
- 19:36Speaker 4: so it made it fun to, you know, kind of
- 19:38Speaker 4: see and coach people through that.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And I've seen from litterary like he's always been like
- 19:44Speaker 1: a mature guy, even when he was a younger player
- 19:47Speaker 1: when he first came up. He had an aura of
- 19:50Speaker 1: maturity about him. But I wonder, so last year was
- 19:52Speaker 1: a big year for you, your first time as a
- 19:54Speaker 1: full time starting pitcher. You learned that and now it's
- 19:59Speaker 1: a different team. It's a younger team, part of a reset,
- 20:02Speaker 1: and they're looking at you as front of the rotation guy.
- 20:05Speaker 1: How do you look at this season? For you going
- 20:08Speaker 1: into it and doesn't feel any any different than maybe
- 20:11Speaker 1: going into last season.
- 20:14Speaker 5: I mean, first of all, that's that's a way that
- 20:16Speaker 5: I want to carry and then I look forward to carrying,
- 20:19Speaker 5: you know, growing up, that's that's everything that I dreamed of.
- 20:23Speaker 5: So you know, I'm very excited for this year. And
- 20:27Speaker 5: as far as the group that we have, you know,
- 20:30Speaker 5: why not us? You know, you saw the dbacs fude
- 20:32Speaker 5: a few years ago or they had a super young group,
- 20:34Speaker 5: and you know, the beautiful thing about baseball is anybody
- 20:37Speaker 5: can win on any given day for any given reason.
- 20:40Speaker 5: And so you know, you put the right group together
- 20:42Speaker 5: that creates the right culture, and all of a sudden
- 20:44Speaker 5: you start playing a good brand of baseball. You know,
- 20:47Speaker 5: things can turn around real quick. So you know, you
- 20:49Speaker 5: can call it a rebuild. The front officers can call
- 20:51Speaker 5: it a rebuild or reset or whatever we want to do.
- 20:54Speaker 5: But I don't think anybody's showing up to spring cashing
- 20:57Speaker 5: in on the season already. I think we all want
- 20:59Speaker 5: to show up and compete. We all have personal reasons
- 21:01Speaker 5: to compete for and therefore we have reasons to compete
- 21:03Speaker 5: as a team too. So you know, I'm trying to
- 21:06Speaker 5: approach this with the idea that really anything can happen
- 21:10Speaker 5: if we if we put the right bricks in place
- 21:12Speaker 5: and line at us.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I got one more question before we let let me
- 21:19Speaker 1: get on with his day. If that's okay, Lance, and
- 21:22Speaker 1: it's about his boy, Nolan Gorman. I know you guys
- 21:25Speaker 1: are boys. You talk about a young team, you talk
- 21:28Speaker 1: about personal reasons to want to compete and do well.
- 21:32Speaker 1: So we don't know what's going to happen with Nolan
- 21:34Speaker 1: Arnatto yet, but clearly the Cardinals are looking to make
- 21:38Speaker 1: a move because they would like to see what Nolan
- 21:41Speaker 1: Gorman can do. And look, last year was a rough one.
- 21:44Speaker 1: They were good spots for him, but he was trying
- 21:46Speaker 1: to stay within the process that he believed in. Tell
- 21:50Speaker 1: me something about Nolan Gorman, what you expect from him
- 21:53Speaker 1: and why you believe that he will find it again?
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:59Speaker 5: I think for and foremost I know that he deals
- 22:02Speaker 5: with failure incredibly well. He's a guy where you know,
- 22:05Speaker 5: I've questioned at times like, hey, are you even upset.
- 22:08Speaker 5: You just struck out four times, and like you're able
- 22:10Speaker 5: to have a conversation with me, like I wouldn't be
- 22:12Speaker 5: able to sleep tonight. And what I've kind of learned
- 22:15Speaker 5: is that, say, probably one of his most admirable qualities
- 22:18Speaker 5: is his ability to just flush it and keep moving forward. So, yes,
- 22:22Speaker 5: we've seen the stretches of what he can do, and man,
- 22:26Speaker 5: it's so special and he does turn it on in
- 22:28Speaker 5: that way. But I think the most reassuring thing to
- 22:31Speaker 5: me is I haven't seen any of the struggles that
- 22:35Speaker 5: he's gone through really get to him or really affect
- 22:37Speaker 5: him in a way that I think would hurt his career.
- 22:40Speaker 5: And so you know, he's put in a ton of
- 22:42Speaker 5: work again this offseason. I think his swing is in
- 22:45Speaker 5: a great spot again this offseason, and I don't see
- 22:48Speaker 5: any reason why he can't come out and be the
- 22:50Speaker 5: guy that we all know he can and that he
- 22:53Speaker 5: knows he can too.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Maybe I appreciate you coming on and showing us the
- 22:58Speaker 1: softer side of lance Lynn. Lance I want to thank
- 23:02Speaker 1: you because you're actually coaching him, and I'm like, this
- 23:06Speaker 1: guy should be a coach somewhere. I think that'll happen somewhere. Oh,
- 23:12Speaker 1: it's because you're sitting on a pile of money. Gentlemen,
- 23:15Speaker 1: it's been a pleasure, Libby. Thanks for making time, Lance,
- 23:19Speaker 1: thank you for being a teddy bear that's going to
- 23:21Speaker 1: do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see
- 23:24Speaker 1: you on the next episode. Hopefully that one won't suck.
