- 1:12Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 1:16culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 1:20media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 1:23Every Monday through Thursday, I'm your host Lauren Meisner,
- 1:27the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 1:32Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 1:34OK, I wanted to make a quick clarification from yesterday's
- 1:38episode before I jump into today's episode.
- 1:41When I talked about Swiftologist opinion on Tate Mcrae's album,
- 1:45and I said that it was like missing the Canadian music
- 1:48culture context. I was aware that Swiftologist is
- 1:52not American. I didn't say it.
- 1:54I honestly just forgot to mention that I missed that, but
- 1:58I didn't mean that their perspective specifically was
- 2:01through an American lens. I meant more so that most of us,
- 2:05our default is to look at pop culture through an American
- 2:09lens, including me, and that it would be really hard to
- 2:12understand the Canadian influences in Tate's music if
- 2:16you're not Canadian and you didn't grow up with it and you
- 2:19weren't like immersed in it. So I recognize I wasn't very
- 2:22clear on that. I think there was some confusion
- 2:25that I was specifically targeting Swiftologist and
- 2:28saying they are looking at this from an American lens and
- 2:32assuming that they're American. I knew that they're not American
- 2:35before I reported on this story. I just, you know, I didn't say
- 2:38it like I said, and that's not really what I meant, so I just
- 2:41wanted to clear that up. OK, sorry.
- 2:43The first story that I need to get out of the way, this is
- 2:45literally happening as we speak. I just got a bunch of messages
- 2:48from my team being like, have you recorded Mini yet?
- 2:51Millie Bobby Brown has made a long reel on Instagram and she's
- 2:55talking about the hate against her.
- 2:56So I haven't had time to even watch it, so I'm going to insert
- 2:59it here. I started in the industry when I
- 3:01was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world,
- 3:04and for some reason, people can't seem to grow up with me.
- 3:09Instead, they act like I'm supposed to stay frozen in time,
- 3:12like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things Season
- 3:151. And because I don't, I'm now a
- 3:18target. I want to talk about some of the
- 3:20articles that have recently released while I'm on my press
- 3:24tour and some of the writers who are so desperate to tear young
- 3:28women down. This isn't journalism.
- 3:31This is bullying. The fact that adult writers are
- 3:34spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices is
- 3:38disturbing. And the fact that some of these
- 3:41articles are written by women makes it even worse.
- 3:45We always talk about supporting and uplifting young women, but
- 3:48when it comes down to it, it seems a lot easier to just tear
- 3:51them down. For clicks.
- 3:53I mean, I really agree that we should not be writing ever about
- 3:57how people look. You know, I know we did a
- 3:59podcast episode at the very beginning of last season on like
- 4:03the discourse around why quote UN quote, like Gen.
- 4:06Z looks old and how that was kind of an off offshoot of Kylie
- 4:10Jenner showing up and everyone thinking that she was dissolving
- 4:12her filler or had, I can't remember, she had too much
- 4:15filler or she'd been dissolving it or something.
- 4:17So I recognize that there are instances when we have
- 4:20perpetuated that narrative as well, but always hopefully we
- 4:24have done it in a way that's like for the bigger picture that
- 4:27is sending a bigger message or dissecting a bigger topic.
- 4:29Like, I completely get like the concept of just writing articles
- 4:33about how somebody looks different.
- 4:35I mean, how many times have we seen this too?
- 4:37Like how many times have we seen a child star grow up and go
- 4:42through different phases? I went through like 100 phases
- 4:44when I was a teenager and in my like, early 20s.
- 4:48You can ask any of my friends growing up in high school, I had
- 4:51like black hair. I had blonde hair.
- 4:53One day I was sporty, one day I was goth.
- 4:56Like that's just part of like coming into your own and
- 4:58figuring out who you are. And I can't imagine having to do
- 5:00that in the public eye. I don't know how I feel about
- 5:03her name dropping the journalist because I do know how this
- 5:05industry works and it's not always within the journalists
- 5:08control like what they write, who they write about, the
- 5:11headlines that are put on their articles, things like that.
- 5:14However, I completely agree with her message.
- 5:19You guys know how I feel about the teenage girlhood.
- 5:21I know she's not a teenage girl anymore, but like, the teenage
- 5:24girlhood, the like, young 20s, like being a young woman is so
- 5:27hard. It is honestly such a traumatic
- 5:30experience and I can't imagine having to do that in the public
- 5:34eye while you're trying to figure yourself out.
- 5:36And like she says, publications are writing about you.
- 5:40Every time you change your look, it's being covered.
- 5:43So yeah, that was a little bit like muddled because I didn't
- 5:46have any time to process it because, like I said, I got
- 5:48these messages literally as I'm recording.
- 5:49However, let's get into the rest of the stories for today.
- 5:53So the next story that I have for you guys is that I wanted to
- 5:57discuss kind of the narrative that's been going on on TikTok
- 6:00right now about family vloggers and how a lot of people think
- 6:04that they are fleeing California to avoid the new child labor
- 6:08laws. Internet users have been
- 6:09spreading this narrative in recent weeks that family
- 6:12vloggers are fleeing California and relocating specifically to
- 6:16Tennessee to avoid having to compensate their children for
- 6:19being in their content. In September, the governor of
- 6:22California signed a bill which requires content creators who
- 6:26feature minors in their content at least 30% of the time to
- 6:30compensate those minors by putting aside a proportional
- 6:33percentage of money into a trust fund for when they reach 18.
- 6:37So there are a lot of caveats there, but there is an effort
- 6:41being made to compensate child influencers.
- 6:45This is the third state in the US to implement these types of
- 6:49protections. So Illinois and Minnesota
- 6:51already had protective measures in place for child influencers.
- 6:54So yes, there are all these videos now going viral of people
- 6:57being like, do you want to know why all these influencers are
- 7:00moving to Tennessee? Because this law is about to
- 7:02come into place now. It seems that causation and
- 7:06correlation are getting a little bit mixed up here in this
- 7:09narrative. There have been a few big family
- 7:13vloggers that have relocated from California to Tennessee.
- 7:15Colon, Savannah Lebrandt, Cicely Bachman, Shannon Rose, and
- 7:19Brittany Xavier to name a few. So these are the influencers
- 7:23that are primarily being used as examples in this narrative.
- 7:26However, all of these families except for Brittany's moved
- 7:30before this bill was signed. Journalist Taylor Lorenz and for
- 7:34Tessa Latifi suggest this trend of influencers moving to
- 7:37Tennessee is likely tied to these families becoming
- 7:40increasingly right wing rather than them trying to skirt child
- 7:43labor laws. Taylor Lorenz writes for user
- 7:46mag Quote. Conservative family influencers
- 7:48in other states that have zero child influencer laws on the
- 7:51books are also flocking to Tennessee, further refuting the
- 7:54idea that this is a California specific phenomenon.
- 7:57Despite conservative influencers leaving, the influencer industry
- 8:00in California is growing, not declining.
- 8:03In 2020, California led the United States in influencing
- 8:07with professional content creators comprising 5.45% of its
- 8:11population, according to. Influence it.
- 8:13Influencity influencity. I'm sorry, I don't know how to
- 8:16say that influence influencity I don't know a digital marketing
- 8:21platform since their poll, that number has only grown.
- 8:25Despite this, I don't think it's actually necessarily a bad thing
- 8:29that we are looking at family vloggers with a more critical
- 8:32eye and questioning their motives.
- 8:34I think we've been waking up to the fact that family vloggers
- 8:37can be as predatory as stage parents in Hollywood.
- 8:40And I think theories like this where users online are talking
- 8:44about these laws and child protection and the parents
- 8:47motives and all of that, I do think these conversations are
- 8:50important and I think they could lead to further protections for
- 8:54children online. But I also understand the
- 8:56importance of what Taylor and for Tesla have done here, which
- 8:59is kind of poking holes in this, like quote, UN quote conspiracy
- 9:03theory because obviously there is a war on valid information.
- 9:09And I think it's important to also point that out.
- 9:11So I think two things can be true here.
- 9:13OK, the next story that I have for you.
- 9:15Speaking of child influencers and family vloggers, there is a
- 9:18lot of concern around influencer Piper Raquel after she did a
- 9:22collab with the BOP House last week.
- 9:25Piper Raquel is a 17 year old creator who has 13 million
- 9:29followers on TikTok and 5 million followers on Instagram.
- 9:32She started her online career very young and rose to fame
- 9:35quite quickly for her content collective which was called
- 9:39Piper Squad. Piper Squad launched in 2020
- 9:42when she was around 12 or 13 but she had started influencing
- 9:45before then. In January 20, 2211, former
- 9:49Piper Squad members, along with their parents, filed a lawsuit
- 9:52against Piper's mother Tiffany, alleging quote, emotional,
- 9:56verbal, physical, and at times, sexual abuse, as per People
- 10:00magazine quote. The teen creators also allege
- 10:03they were unpaid for their contributions, though it's
- 10:06unclear if they were ever promised payment.
- 10:08The lawsuit added that Smith, who is Tiffany Tiffany Smith,
- 10:12conspired to intentionally interfere with and sabotage
- 10:15their individual YouTube channels by using bots and false
- 10:19reporting slash flagging to drive down their views, thereby
- 10:23significantly diminishing their own revenue avenue.
- 10:26So I suppose the theory here is that Piper's mother, Tiffany
- 10:31would be doing this to the other squad members because most of
- 10:34the Piper Squad videos were going on Piper's channel.
- 10:36Before this lawsuit, there were questions around Tiffany's
- 10:41treatment of Piper in terms of like her career and how that was
- 10:44being managed. So now Fast forward to last week
- 10:48and Piper did a collaboration with the Bob House, the Bop
- 10:51house. I don't think I've spoken about
- 10:52the Bop house on this podcast before, but it is a new content
- 10:56creation house formed by primarily only fans creators.
- 11:00So basically, users were outraged that Piper again, who
- 11:04is a minor, would be filming content with them.
- 11:06The biggest concern here is that the Bop house has 3,000,000
- 11:09followers, and it's assumed that the majority of these followers
- 11:12are, you know, men or people that follow the creators in
- 11:15general for that, like spicy content.
- 11:18So to have Piper, who is a minor, featured on their page in
- 11:23their videos, like, it's just a risk.
- 11:25The Bob House and Piper have both responded to this backlash.
- 11:29Bob House creator Sophie said that Piper visited her personal
- 11:33house, not the Bob House itself. And in a deleted video, the Bob
- 11:37House official account wrote. How many videos are people going
- 11:40to make about us doing Tik Toks with Piper?
- 11:43We're just chilling making Tik Toks, All right?
- 11:46And the last thing I wanted to talk about today is the Oscars
- 11:50red carpet. So obviously yesterday was the
- 11:52Oscars. And I honestly don't have much
- 11:54to say on the awards because I feel quite removed from like the
- 11:58movie world. I am much more a TV girly than I
- 12:02am like a film girly. So I thought I would share my
- 12:06best dressed from the red carpet instead.
- 12:08Although I did want to say I saw a trailer for Anora when I went
- 12:11to see Wicked, and I literally said to Sean, like, we need to
- 12:14see that. That looks so good.
- 12:15And then when I saw it was winning, I was like, Oh my God.
- 12:18I thought that this was some random, like, underground movie
- 12:21because we went to, like an indie cinema to see Wicked.
- 12:25And I thought it was just some like, random movie that I don't
- 12:28know, like nobody else would ever see.
- 12:30And I was just like, that looks so good.
- 12:31I want to see it. Yeah, apparently not.
- 12:34So I'm even more excited to see it now.
- 12:36OK, first, Cynthia Revo's giant dark green gown, which I think
- 12:41was velvet. It was structured.
- 12:43It was larger than life. And I think it was the perfect
- 12:46way to close off this amazing wicked era for her.
- 12:51I know that they are doing wicked too, but the wicked era
- 12:55round one I guess. I also really did love Ariana's
- 13:00gowns, both of them. Her red carpet gown was like
- 13:03that light pink structured long Tutu Tull vibe.
- 13:08I'm sorry, I'm not a fashion girly, so the way I'm describing
- 13:10this is probably going to hurt some of you if you are.
- 13:15And I'm sure there are real names for different things that
- 13:19I'm describing and words that I'm not using.
- 13:21So you feel free to correct me in the comments.
- 13:23Like that's totally fine because I don't know what I'm talking
- 13:25about. And then on stage, she wore this
- 13:29like red gown and it paid homage to the Wizard of Oz.
- 13:32It was red, it was sparkly and it had a Ruby red slipper on the
- 13:37back. And I thought that was so cool.
- 13:39It was like such a cool, unique twist.
- 13:41I am forever sad about her makeup throughout this era and I
- 13:45was hoping that for the Oscars she would come out with a
- 13:48different makeup look. I just like can't get over the
- 13:51strip lash. This strip lash is shocking to
- 13:55me. I've also seen people say that
- 13:56she has insisted on doing her own makeup throughout this whole
- 14:00press run and stuff, which I can appreciate like I am usually I
- 14:04do my own makeup kind of girly too.
- 14:06But the strip lash like half the time you can see it lifting.
- 14:11I don't know, I just I wish that she came out with a different
- 14:14glam but I loved both of the looks.
- 14:17I thought Selena Gomez looked gorgeous.
- 14:19I know she was a bit understated but I loved like the full
- 14:23diamond vibe. I really feel like that kind of
- 14:25off the shoulder is her look. Like she seems to be wearing
- 14:29that a lot and it looks so good on her.
- 14:31Demi Moore, another sparkly dress.
- 14:35She looked so good. I really have nothing else to
- 14:37say. Like she is just so hot.
- 14:38Redmond Rock, our influencer king.
- 14:42He wore this giant like gold metallic piece almost with a
- 14:47shrug, and it kind of looked like he had wings when he would
- 14:50lift his arms. And I just thought he looked
- 14:53like this gold, like majestic royal bird or something.
- 14:57It was so cool. Obviously everybody loves
- 15:00Timothy Chalamet's yellow suit. I thought Lisa from Blackpink
- 15:03wearing that dress suit thing. At first I was like, oh, that's
- 15:08kind of cool. And then I was like, maybe it's
- 15:11giving like Halloween magician. I'm not really sure.
- 15:15I can't tell if I think it's really cool or if I think it
- 15:18looks like a costume. And finally, Lupita Nyong'o I
- 15:22think was my best dressed, or at least I think she would have
- 15:26been my best dressed if it wasn't the Oscars.
- 15:29I am of the opinion similar to the Mac Gala, where like the
- 15:31Oscars should be kind of like larger than life.
- 15:35And I recognize that her dress wasn't really that, but it was
- 15:38so good. I was obsessed with it.
- 15:40It was so chic, but it was also so feminine and it was just so
- 15:43beautiful, like she looked so I don't know, I just loved it.
- 15:46I loved that dress. That is a dress that like I wish
- 15:49I could own and in general the main friends that I saw come out
- 15:54of this carpet. I'm going to say sparkles like
- 15:57diamond rhinestone sparkle vibes, almost like wet looking
- 16:02metallics. Again, I'm sure there's official
- 16:06wording for this that I am not nailing, so feel free to let me
- 16:10know what this stuff is called. But yeah, it's like wet looking
- 16:13metallic and fairly like straight silhouettes also with
- 16:18like spaghetti straps, not a lot of strapless.
- 16:21Anyways, guys, that's it. That's it for today.
- 16:24Thank you so much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 16:26I love you guys. Please rate, review and
- 16:29subscribe. We're trying to get to 1000
- 16:32Spotify star ratings and Annabelle will talk to you guys
- 16:36tomorrow and then I will be back on Thursday.
- 16:38Bye.
