- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Go do something that's hard, go try and accomplish something that's hard, just get up, move towards that challenge, whatever that challenge is, move towards that challenge and go attack it, and you may be successful, and you may not be successful, but you will be better.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: And the next challenge, you can be more prepared for.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: If you're dude and you're 22 years old and you feel like you're directionless, get your together man and go start making things happen.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: All that fear that's in your head, all the what ifs and the scenarios that you create inside your own mind that are way worse than anything that is actually gonna happen, they all disappear when you go.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: So just take action and start moving forward.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: you have the option of being disciplined.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have the option of being born six-four, right?
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have that option, you either are, you're not.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: But you do have the option of choosing discipline or not.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: So discipline, not necessarily something to be given with.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so at all.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe there's some small percentage of it.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe this person's a little bit more innately disciplined than this other person, but I think it's a choice.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: discipline be gets disciplined right if you make a bad decision in the morning and you decide you're not going to get out of bed You decide you're not going to work out when you get to the office that donuts are that much more tempting and you're probably going to eat Where's if you woke up early you worked out?
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: You got a little bit of work done before you even showed up to work you show up to work and now those donuts you're like I don't need those right now You you just make better decisions
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: If you want freedom in your life, you have to have discipline.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: So if you lack the discipline to exercise and eat healthy, you will end up being a slave to disease.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you lack the discipline to work hard, save your money, you will end up a slave to finances.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: If you lack the discipline to manage your time correctly, you will end up with no free time.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you have self-discipline, if you have the discipline to save your money and work hard and invest your money properly, if you have the discipline to manage your time correctly and not waste a bunch of time, if you have the discipline to exercise and eat healthy, you will end up with freedom.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: There's a term, it's rock bottom, but this is a term that we hear for someone that's addicted, someone that's an alcoholic, someone that's physically let themselves go, someone that's put themselves into a situation with their finances or their work or whatever, where they reach rock bottom.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: But when it when it when the excuses all go away and people can actually confront the fact
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: but it's also unbelievably empowering because if these problems are because of me, then I'm capable of fixing these problems.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: So even though extreme ownership hurts and it's painful, it's also liberating because now you have control over your fate and over your destiny and that is a glorious thing.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: You can control a lot more than you think and the world is happening and if you let the world happen to you, it's going to happen to you, but if you want to make something happen to the world, you can do that as well.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: So choice you get to make.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of those,
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: laws of combat that I teach and use to teach and seal teams and now I teach to businesses prioritize an execute like you've got to figure out what the priorities are and then execute on those things but you've got to figure out what the what the biggest priorities at any given time like I said whether it's this business or your family or your health.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: At certain times, you got to say, all right, I got to pay attention to my family right now.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: I can feel things are getting a little bit.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's got you over there, or all right, my family seems solid.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, I'm going to focus on this part of the business.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: And then within the business, this particular section of the business, so you go right and down the line.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: What would you say to someone who's going through a bad month, or a string of bad months and doesn't see any light at the end of the tunnel?
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: What are your options?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, you're upside down financially, relationship, went south.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever those things are, your credit card debt is up.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: You got fired for your job.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, you're in a terrible situation.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: What are your options?
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: What you have to do is, well, you kind of have to prioritize an execute, right?
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: Like, okay, I got all these bad things going on in my life.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: What is my biggest problem right now?
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: And you gotta say, okay, I gotta start with solving that problem.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: And you've got to start to go and back to, I think it was the initial thing that we talked about, take action.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to take action and move forward.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: And if you don't,
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: The downward spiral doesn't end.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: And if you allow it to continue to go down, that's where it's gonna end up.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: And so you just have to, what are my options?
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: A band in the whole thing?
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like, no, that's not the option.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: That is not the option.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: What can I make better right now?
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: And start to reassemble things and put them back together.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: Do you actually wanna do this or not?
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: Cause if you actually wanna do it, what's gonna stop you nothing?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: And if you don't really wanna do it, what's gonna stop you?
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: Just about anything that comes up.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: Just about any obstacle that gets in your way, becomes an excuse, it becomes a reason, it comes a rationale for not proceeding down that path.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: And this is interesting too, when you talk to people that went to seal training, they didn't make it.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: Most of the time, it's some reason.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's a medical reason.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: There's a family problem.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's very few people that look at you and say, oh, I quit because it sucked.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: Which is what, by the way, which is what happens to the vast majority of people.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: The vast majority of people that don't make it through seal training.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: And by this, I mean, 80%, 90% of the people that don't make it through seal training, they didn't make it through because they quit.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: Then there's a small percentage that had a medical problem.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: Then there's a small percentage that got performance dropped.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: Meaning they couldn't perform the runs, the swims, the technical aspects of the job and they failed, and they get dropped.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: But the vast majority of people, they quit, but they don't usually say that.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: And even in their mind, they probably don't believe it.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: They probably believe, well, you know, there's my leg, and once my leg was hurting, I knew I was going to have hard time on the runs, because I wasn't going to be able to make the runs.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I quit, but it wasn't really quitting, it was because my leg.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's one of the few things that you learn in basic seal training is to shrug your shoulders and go forward.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like, one of the things they do is they'll line you up on the ocean.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: And this is in California.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes people think that California is nice warm water, but it's not.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's 55 degrees, and I don't know what that translates to in center grade, but it's cold.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the things they do is they'll line you up and they say interlock arms and you get arm and arm with the guy next to you and they say forward march and you walk march into water and they say take seats and you sit down and they leave you in there.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it's called surf torture and you just sit there.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: After a while, they'll pull you up out of the water that'll line you up, and the doctor will come down and see if anyone has hypothermia.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: And if no one has hypothermia or signs of hypothermia yet, get back in the water.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: And they just keep doing that.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so what you learn to do is, okay, I'm gonna go forward.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's no, I can't get out of this.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna go forward, not gonna quit, so I'm gonna go forward, bring it on.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I think if there's anything that you learn, it's to keep pushing,
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: through things that suck.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: Extreme ownership is this went wrong, this failed, didn't accomplish this, and it's not the fault of my boss, it's not the fault of my girlfriend, it's not the fault of my parents, it's not the fault of the weather, it's my fault.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm gonna take ownership of it and I'm gonna fix it.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's what extreme ownership is.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: And this is a very difficult thing to do because it hurts.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: because when you look around at your life and you look around at your job and your financial situation and your relationship and your physical health and when you look at all those things and all the problems that you may have with those things and you say the reason I have all those problems is because of me that can hurt that can sting and a lot of times our ego rejects that
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: and makes excuses and lies.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: And then we don't have to change anything.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then nothing changes.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: Years ago, I spent a good chunk of my, I guess it was my 30s.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: Training MMA fighters.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, we had a GJ2 gym, we had an MMA gym.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: And so, in the beginning,
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: when a potential fighter would come in and they'd be 22 years old and I'd say, how old are you?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: And they'd say, I'm 22 and they'd say, you don't wanna fight, I wanna, there's a fight card coming up, I wanna be on it and I was like, I'd tell him to listen, you got plenty of time, like get better train up your skills.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I said that for probably three or four years.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then after three or four years, when guys would come in, I would start telling them the opposite.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: which is you need to get on it, that you need to be in here every day.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: That you're almost out of time, you're 22, you're late.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because I realized I saw a lot of people that didn't have any sense of urgency in their life, and when you don't have a sense of urgency, things aren't gonna happen.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: You need to make things happen as we already discussed.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're not just gonna happen for you.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: You are not going to become a good fighter.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: unless you make it happen.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: And you're not gonna do anything in life, unless you make it happen.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: So if you feel like right now, you're looking around with and your lost or directionless, I would take about 15 minutes and figure out what the hell you wanna do with your life and I always start getting after it.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: People ask me about jiu-jitsu and they don't like to fight.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: They don't like the idea of it.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: They don't like the physical, close contact, whatever the case may be.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: And they'll say, I don't like it.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: How long do I have to do it for?
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the things that I say is, you have to do jiu-jitsu until you submit someone while you're training with them.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: And the reason I say that is because if you can train long enough,
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: that you submit someone, all of a sudden you go, oh wow, I made progress.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I see that.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: I see the reward.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: And so with, yeah, do those little things, but do those little things until at the end of the day, you go, that was a pretty good day.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like, don't, because if you just get up and, okay, well, I got out of bed and Chris said, get out of the bed, but I still freaking don't like.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I still feel like crap, right?
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, get out and do a little bit more and do a little bit more and do a little bit more and do a little bit more.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: and you can stop when you get to the end of the day and you go, okay, you know what?
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: Today was a pretty freaking cold day and I feel good.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Then if you want to go back to living in the hole in ordering Uber Eats, go ahead.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: But at least give me the effort to make yourself have a good day.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: If you give up a little bit today, like you can't get it back.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: if you skip a workout today you can't you there's no possible way to get that back when you let something go it's gone and Rome wasn't built in the day but Rome didn't fall apart under day either
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't fall apart because of one thing.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: It falls apart just a little bit at a time.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody gets fit overnight, nobody gets fat overnight.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: And so you can't submit, you have to get in there and keep it going.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I know the results of not doing the thing are not good.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_00]: One of the most profound things that you can do to become more confident,
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: is to become okay with saying, yeah, I'm not exactly sure what to do right now.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: No one knows everything.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: No one makes all perfect decisions.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: No one is understands every element of the world.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: So if you can say that, all of a sudden the world becomes just a lot easier.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're gonna blow some stuff.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna make some bad decisions.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna screw some things up.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's kinda cool.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that doesn't make for good stories, man.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: Go, go, get them.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: Go make them happen.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: Don't sit around being afraid that you might screw something up.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna screw something up.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's guaranteed.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: Go do it.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Get a good story out of it.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: We as adults.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: are not used to losing control of our emotions.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: So what's going to happen?
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: You lose one of your friends.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: You lose one of your family members.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to hit with a wave.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: Waves of emotion that you can't control.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: And this sometimes causes people to really overreact and think that they're in this terrible place, because they think, oh my gosh, I've been able to control my emotions for the last 30 years.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: And now I'm losing, now I can't control my emotions.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: There's something wrong with me is what they think.
- 13:58[SPEAKER_00]: And this is what I learned, is that those waves of emotion, they're gonna roll back.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: And you're gonna, you're gonna get control again.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: You take a breath, and then you're gonna get hit with another storm, but it's gonna go away.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: And you're gonna get hit with another storm, but it's not gonna be as strong.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's gonna go away, and you're gonna get hit with another storm.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna be a longer period of time, and it's not gonna be as strong.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: And what this is is this is your, this is you processing what happened.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: And eventually you do get you regain control of your emotions.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: And they're still gonna be times.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: They're still gonna be times where you're gonna be three years, five years, 10 years down the road, you're gonna hit with a wave of emotion and you're gonna be caught off guard.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna catch you.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna have wins, we're gonna have losses.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna have successes, we're gonna have failures.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna have good nights, we're gonna have bad nights.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna have good relationships, we're gonna have bad relationships.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna have good ideas and bad ideas.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna make money, we're gonna lose money.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: All these things are gonna happen.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: And if you oscillate emotionally up and down drastically, it's gonna be problematic.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: So finding a good stable, centered, way to be and look at the world and take everything that you see with a little bit of a grain of salt and don't get swayed too drastically in one direction to the other, you're gonna be okay.
