Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Mike Hutcheson: Marketing Expert on the NZR-Ineos settlement, what's next for the All Blacks?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well. New Zealand Rugby and in Theos. Their sponsorship feud
- 0:03Speaker 1: has officially ended in the High Court. New Zealand Rugby
- 0:06Speaker 1: took the petrochemical company to task in he OS, we
- 0:10Speaker 1: terminated a twenty one million dollar a year deal with
- 0:13Speaker 1: the All Blacks brand. It's believed that Jim Ratcliffe, the
- 0:16Speaker 1: billionaire and the owner of Inios, has now paid what
- 0:18Speaker 1: it owed for the twenty twenty five deal. So that's good,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and even offered a small additional payment on top.
- 0:23Speaker 2: So.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Mike Hutchinson is a marketing expert. He is a former
- 0:26Speaker 1: managing director of Sachi and Sachi and despite being an
- 0:29Speaker 1: advertising he's up early too. Good morning to you, Mike.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I was just saying to your producer, I got working early.
- 0:35Speaker 2: The cat jump on the bed, then followed by the dog,
- 0:37Speaker 2: the dog of Bernie's Mountain dog. You know when she
- 0:39Speaker 2: jumps on the bed.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yeah, good, very good. Are you Are you surprised that
- 0:42Speaker 1: New Zealand Rubby did so well out of the court battle?
- 0:45Speaker 2: I think in the end it's probably quite bene visual.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Assuming that I could pick up the right kind of
- 0:51Speaker 2: replacement sponsorship, I think they president't too badly.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Okay, So where are we going from here and what
- 0:58Speaker 1: lessons should we learn from all of this if we're
- 1:00Speaker 1: looking for someone to replace ANYOS, Because we thought that
- 1:03Speaker 1: in the OS was going to be great. It was huge,
- 1:05Speaker 1: gym was rich and they have the money and they
- 1:07Speaker 1: were proud of it all. And yeah there were some
- 1:09Speaker 1: dodges looks about it because it was a petrochemical company.
- 1:13Speaker 1: But we thought, this is good, this is going to
- 1:14Speaker 1: be a regular income. Who should we be going for them?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, sadly, they probably need to replace it with something
- 1:23Speaker 2: like INEOS, I mean even an ulter ed of course
- 1:26Speaker 2: who in a sponsored local are more infrastructure and some chemicals.
- 1:31Speaker 2: But you need to chase somebody like a Jim Radcliffe
- 1:36Speaker 2: or a moment Aldred who can make a call. If
- 1:41Speaker 2: you're going to chase after a big corporation, you have
- 1:45Speaker 2: to get buy in from everyone down the line and
- 1:48Speaker 2: including a board of directors and so on. So it's
- 1:50Speaker 2: best to go after an organization was run by someone
- 1:53Speaker 2: perhaps even autocratic, but who can make a call quite quickly.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And sadly that the numbers are very very small. You know,
- 2:00Speaker 2: we're a tiny country in the bottom right and court
- 2:02Speaker 2: of the world. We're not well, I'm up there, certainly
- 2:05Speaker 2: not in the States. The big the big players are
- 2:08Speaker 2: in the States, and you've got to look hard to
- 2:10Speaker 2: find someone who can afford just not to the r BLEX.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So so you're saying that the All Blacks Jersey is
- 2:14Speaker 1: really a vanity investment, someone who just like Cares.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I reckon. I reckon because I mean sure, but see
- 2:21Speaker 2: someone like Altrade. I think they're into infrastructure, scaffolding, you
- 2:26Speaker 2: Petrick Chimal stuff. They build plants, they build big things,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and I can imagine the halo effect of that for
- 2:32Speaker 2: Ultrade is terrific. And I think that Altred himself, I
- 2:36Speaker 2: think it was educated in France. He probably knows about
- 2:40Speaker 2: the power of of of rugby and I've putting in
- 2:43Speaker 2: France and in Europe and it's probably quite a good mix.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But that's the that's the kind of person you're going
- 2:48Speaker 2: to go after. You're not going to go after one
- 2:49Speaker 2: of the big banks. You're not going to go after
- 2:51Speaker 2: Microsoft or.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Very good. Thank you so much for your expertise and
- 2:59Speaker 1: going for the cat and the dog right now. For
