- 0:00Jeremiah chapter 10. Dear Lord, please be with us as
- 0:05we read through this chapter and give us wisdom and insight.
- 0:08We ask for this in Jesus name. Hear what the Lord says to you
- 0:13people of Israel. This is what the Lord says.
- 0:17Do not lead, learn the ways of the nations, or be terrified by
- 0:22signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them,
- 0:27for the practices of the people are worthless.
- 0:30They cut a tree out of the forest.
- 0:33A Craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
- 0:35They adorn it with silver and gold.
- 0:38They fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter like
- 0:44a scarecrow in a cucumber field. Their idols cannot speak, they
- 0:49must be carried because they cannot walk.
- 0:52Do not fear them. They can do no harm, nor can
- 0:56they do any good. No one is like you, Lord.
- 0:59You are great and your name is mighty in power.
- 1:03Who should not fear you? Who should not fear you, King of
- 1:07the nations? This is your due.
- 1:12Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their
- 1:15kingdoms, there is no one like you.
- 1:17They all are senseless and foolish.
- 1:20They are taught by worthless wooden idols.
- 1:22Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Euphaz.
- 1:28What the Craftsman and Goldsmith have is is dressed in blue and
- 1:33purple, all made by skilled workers.
- 1:36But the Lord is the true God. He is the living God, the
- 1:40eternal King. When he is angry, the earth
- 1:43trembles. The nations cannot endure his
- 1:46wrath. Tell them this.
- 1:48These gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will
- 1:51perish from the earth and from under the heavens.
- 1:55But God made the earth by his power.
- 1:58He founded the world by his wisdom, and he stretched out the
- 2:02heavens by his understanding. When he thunders, the waters in
- 2:05heaven roar, He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth,
- 2:09He sends lightning with the rain, and he brings out the wind
- 2:13from his storehouses. Everyone is senseless and
- 2:17without knowledge. Every Goldsmith is shamed by his
- 2:20idols. The images he makes are a fraud.
- 2:25They have no breath in them. They are worthless, the objects
- 2:28of mockery. When their judgment comes, they
- 2:31will perish. He who is the portion of Jacob
- 2:34is not like these, for he is the maker of all things, including
- 2:38Israel, the people of his inheritance.
- 2:41The Lord Almighty is His name. Gather up your belongings to
- 2:45leave the land, you who live under siege.
- 2:49For this is what the Lord says. At this time I will hand out, I
- 2:55will hurl out those who live in this land.
- 2:59I will bring distress on them so they may be captured.
- 3:04Woe to me because of the of my injury.
- 3:08My wound is incurable, yes. Yet I said to myself, this is my
- 3:13sickness and I must endure it. My tent is destroyed, all its
- 3:19ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and
- 3:24are no more. No one is left now to pitch my
- 3:26tent or to set up my shelter. The shepherds are senseless and
- 3:32do not inquire of the Lord. They do not prosper, and all
- 3:36their flock is scattered. Listen, the report is coming, a
- 3:40great commotion from the land of the North.
- 3:43It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals.
- 3:48Lord, I know that people's lives are not their own.
- 3:53It is not for them to direct their steps.
- 3:56Decide or discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure, not in
- 4:01your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.
- 4:05Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge
- 4:08You, on the peoples who do not call on your name, For they have
- 4:13devoured Jacob, and they have devoured him completely and
- 4:17destroyed his homeland. So I'll go through the questions
- 4:21and answers for this. So what were the frightening
- 4:28signs in the heavens? Eclipses, meteorites, comets,
- 4:32and other celestial occurrences were considered signs of good or
- 4:37evil in the ancient Near East. People who thought astrology
- 4:42influenced their lives could easily find they had omens in
- 4:48the stars. Why would people believe that
- 4:51wooden and metal figures had power?
- 4:54They probably believed that a God, a spiritual being, resided
- 4:58within each idol. But there may have been other,
- 5:02more practical concerns to stay on good terms with their
- 5:06Assyrian overlords. For example, the people of Judah
- 5:11had imported Assyrian idols. Why did Jeremiah write this
- 5:19verse? In Aramaic, the specific message
- 5:23highlighting the differences between the one true God and the
- 5:26false gods of the nations was targeted to Pagan idolaters who
- 5:31probably understood aromatic Aramaic better than Hebrew.
- 5:36Aramaic was the language of diplomacy during this period.
- 5:43The other major Aramaic passages in the Old Testament are Ezra,
- 5:49and then there's some in Daniel. Also the earth.
- 5:55God made the earth by his power. This section, repeated almost
- 5:58verbatim in other parts of the Bible, is also repeated in
- 6:03Psalms. Prophets sometimes drew from
- 6:07other scriptures and incorporated them into their
- 6:10teaching. How was God the portion of
- 6:13Jacob? As Jacob, meaning all the people
- 6:16of Israel belonged to God, so God in another sense belonged to
- 6:23Jacob. This was an expression of the
- 6:26intimate relationship between God and his people.
- 6:29What was Jeremiah's injury? He was suffering mental torment
- 6:35and spiritual anguish over the sin of the people of Israel.
- 6:40He also saw that his countrymen were headed for suffering and
- 6:44torment, the unavoidable results of their sinful ways.
- 6:49The coming invaders would ensure would would injure Judah, taking
- 6:56its sons into captivity. Why was he worried about his
- 7:03tent? Jeremiah described his people's
- 7:06impending suffering by using the image of a Bedouin family whose
- 7:11home and children are destroyed. Since nomadic tribes owned no
- 7:16real estate, their tents represented all their personal
- 7:21possessions. What shepherds was he talking
- 7:25about? Shepherds is a metaphor for the
- 7:27leaders of Judah. Flock is a metaphor for the
- 7:30people of Judah. Jeremiah considered the leaders
- 7:34mostly to blame for Judah's predicament.
- 7:38What was this land of the north? This refers to Babylon and her
- 7:42allies. Although Babylon was actually
- 7:45located east of Judah, the normal military route from
- 7:49Babylon to Judah was not a straight east West line.
- 7:56Instead, the Babylonians had to travel around the expansive
- 8:01Arabian desert that lay between Babylon and Judah.
- 8:06The attackers from the east would therefore enter Judah from
- 8:10the north. Why did Jeremiah pray so humbly?
- 8:16After all his previous accusations, Jeremiah fully
- 8:20identified with his people. He wanted to be judged by the
- 8:24same standards by which he had judged them.
- 8:27In spite of, in spite of all the indications of God's wrath,
- 8:33Jeremiah prayed that God would finally judge him and Judah with
- 8:37justice, not anger. Why did Jeremiah ask God to
- 8:42judge the nations that God used to punish Judah?
- 8:46Because sin is still sin. It is true that Babylon's
- 8:50destruction of Judah was put to a holy use by God.
- 8:55Nevertheless, rape, murder, and pillage went were sins for which
- 9:01Babylon would eventually be judged.
- 9:04Though the Babylonians unwittingly fulfilled God's
- 9:07purposes, they still had to answer for the excessive methods
- 9:13and ungodly motives. They slaughtered God's people
- 9:18and raised Jerusalem for their own interest, not God's.
- 9:26And that's the end of chapter 10 for today, and the next time we
- 9:32will hit, I'll go to Chapter 11.
