- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks, Mike Lane. We talk a lot about the vets
- 0:03Speaker 1: on this team, the Schwartzes and the McCanns and the Everlas,
- 0:05Speaker 1: but a lot lately it has been centered around the
- 0:08Speaker 1: younger players. Not only that four flyne, but Berkeley Catton's
- 0:11Speaker 1: been getting a number of great A scoring chances. It
- 0:14Speaker 1: seems like it's a matter of time before he gets
- 0:16Speaker 1: his first goal. Cale Fleury has come in and I say,
- 0:19Speaker 1: he's a young guy's got over two hundred games in
- 0:20Speaker 1: the league, but he's been playing well. What have you
- 0:23Speaker 1: liked about the younger players, these draft picks that are
- 0:26Speaker 1: now starting to come up and make their presence known
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the NHL.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, I think it's important, certainly for any organization, and
- 0:35Speaker 2: in particular organization, to have our young guys come up
- 0:39Speaker 2: and contribute. What I've liked about them as they've added spark,
- 0:43Speaker 2: with added energy and all the while we're developing on
- 0:49Speaker 2: the fly to a certain degree, you know, and they're
- 0:54Speaker 2: getting better and better. You know, each segment, I guess,
- 0:59Speaker 2: if you want to call it that, each game of understanding.
- 1:03Speaker 2: You know what it takes to play in this league,
- 1:06Speaker 2: what it takes to win in this league. It's a
- 1:09Speaker 2: different league than anyone's ever been to and ever seen.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And you know they're doing a good job of sort
- 1:16Speaker 2: of developing into that and their energy has been much
- 1:20Speaker 2: needed for our hockey team.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I guess. Sticking with that, do you put any added
- 1:26Speaker 1: pressure or responsibility on those veteran players, the Everlys and
- 1:30Speaker 1: the Duns and the Larcens, the Schwartzes to help bring
- 1:33Speaker 1: those guys along to mentor or do you just see
- 1:36Speaker 1: that as a natural way with those guys.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Well, that's a joy of having what I would call
- 1:42Speaker 2: good leadership and good people and good character people. Is
- 1:48Speaker 2: they are really doing it organically, you know, certainly we
- 1:54Speaker 2: talk about that, but you know they're good bettering guys
- 2:01Speaker 2: that I think, and you always remember how you came up,
- 2:05Speaker 2: and I'm pretty sure that you know, Jordan Eberley when
- 2:08Speaker 2: he was a youngster, had somebody mentor him, you know
- 2:11Speaker 2: when he remembers that. So I think they're doing a
- 2:13Speaker 2: really good job of bringing those guys along into the
- 2:18Speaker 2: group and certainly into the league and having them understand
- 2:22Speaker 2: what it takes.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Big win last night in Calgary five to one, four
- 2:26Speaker 1: goals in the third period. It was a milestone night
- 2:28Speaker 1: for Everly and for Jacob Malonson, Shane Wright gets a
- 2:32Speaker 1: goal on his birthday, So happiness all around. Just take
- 2:35Speaker 1: us through that full team performance from your side.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Well, I think it started with our goaltender. I didn't
- 2:44Speaker 2: hate our game in the first two periods, but I
- 2:46Speaker 2: didn't like it either. I thought that Grooby played very
- 2:51Speaker 2: very well and gave us an opportunity to have a
- 2:54Speaker 2: good third period. And I thought in the third period,
- 2:57Speaker 2: we as a hockey team played very well. We were
- 2:59Speaker 2: sound solid, and our offense was piggybacked off our defense
- 3:04Speaker 2: and our good structural play.
- 3:05Speaker 1: On this eight game point streak that you guys are
- 3:07Speaker 1: currently on, you've got four, three or four goals in
- 3:11Speaker 1: seven of those eight games, and you've allowed one or
- 3:14Speaker 1: two goals in seven of those eight games. What have
- 3:17Speaker 1: you liked about your systems, about the gameplay, the buy
- 3:22Speaker 1: in over the stretch.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I think we've been more playing a little bit more
- 3:27Speaker 2: on our toes. And when I say that, I mean,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you know, pushing forward or you know, if we are
- 3:36Speaker 2: coming back towards our zone, we're angling better. We're not
- 3:39Speaker 2: backing up. One of the things that we sure don't
- 3:42Speaker 2: like to see is forward skating backwards through the neutral zone.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It just pushes our defense back, takes away our gaps
- 3:51Speaker 2: and then you know, you give up the lines too easily.
- 3:54Speaker 2: So I think we've done a much better job of that.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I have to really credit our goalies as well. They've
- 4:01Speaker 2: done a great job. They've made saves when we've needed
- 4:03Speaker 2: them to make saves. And I think our penalty killing,
- 4:06Speaker 2: our power play has you know, stepped up at the
- 4:09Speaker 2: right times, and certainly our penalty kills a lot better
- 4:12Speaker 2: than it was in the first you know, twenty five
- 4:14Speaker 2: games or whatever.
- 4:15Speaker 1: You got Boston here tonight a little bit more of
- 4:18Speaker 1: a difficult test against a team you only see twice
- 4:20Speaker 1: a year, so there's not really a whole lot of
- 4:23Speaker 1: recent seed to go off of. But when you look
- 4:25Speaker 1: at Boston, big team, good power play, David Pashuak, you
- 4:28Speaker 1: always have to rely and look out for him. Where
- 4:31Speaker 1: do you see the potential pitfalls tonight for Seattle and
- 4:33Speaker 1: how can you overcome those challenges?
- 4:36Speaker 2: Well, we have to be solid in understanding what we
- 4:38Speaker 2: need to do. You know, they're a team that plays
- 4:43Speaker 2: a little bit patient. I guess I would say they
- 4:46Speaker 2: play a lot like La. Their coach came from LA's
- 4:49Speaker 2: organization's a lot of similarities to the way the LA
- 4:53Speaker 2: Kings play right now, and so there's not a lot
- 4:56Speaker 2: of ice out there. There's not a lot of free
- 4:59Speaker 2: space defensively for the most part, and then they can
- 5:02Speaker 2: transition and you know, I eighty eight's in the top
- 5:06Speaker 2: handful of players in the league. You know, he just
- 5:10Speaker 2: finds a way year after year to get it done.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Their special teams are good, their power plays fourth in
- 5:14Speaker 2: the league. So we have to stay out of the box,
- 5:17Speaker 2: you know, for middle of an opponent for sure, and
- 5:21Speaker 2: one that I know very well having been over in
- 5:23Speaker 2: Eastern Conference for so long and played them in the
- 5:25Speaker 2: playoffs a couple of times and all that. You know,
- 5:28Speaker 2: that's a very familiar hockey team for me.
- 5:30Speaker 1: How can you use that experience your experience here tonight.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Well, that's just a little bit of individual stuff. Again,
- 5:36Speaker 2: the coaching has changed, the systems have changed a little
- 5:40Speaker 2: bit for them, So there's differences there. But you know,
- 5:44Speaker 2: just some individual tendencies from guys like macavoy who or
- 5:48Speaker 2: you know, guys like Pasternak, you know those guys Zaka
- 5:52Speaker 2: as well. Chris Taylor coached him in New Jersey, so
- 5:55Speaker 2: there's some individual tendencies that you can look into and
- 5:58Speaker 2: maybe give guys a little bit of a heads up,
- 6:00Speaker 2: But you know, the team has changed a little bit
- 6:03Speaker 2: in terms of, you know, how they play.
