- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We've been doing a series on writing habits here on the podcast, and so far we've covered six writing practices that you can use to build a great writing habit.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And today we're looking at practice number seven, which is take a walk to get your blood flowing.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: You know, there's a lot of research that shows the correlation between exercise and creativity.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: It makes us feel better, it puts us in a better mood, and it helps the blood to flow better to our brain.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: There's also a lot of research showing how bad that sitting is for extended periods of time for us.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And as writers, most of us do a lot of sitting.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: No matter which way you slice it, taking a walk is a great way to get your blood pumping, contribute to your overall health, and clear your head.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: If you struggle with depression or you just feel cooped up a lot of time, taking a walk is honestly one of the best things you can do to boost your productivity and become a better version of yourself.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Soren Kierkegaard, the great philosopher, once said, I walked myself into my best thoughts.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And the same is probably true for all of us if we would just take the time to go for a short walk each day.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And I cannot tell you how many times that I have felt stuck or I just kind of felt like I was in a funk.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And taking a walk around the block just did the trick.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I don't know why exactly it works, but when you just go for uh even just a short five or ten minute walk, it just like has the way of it has a way of clearing the cobwebs out of your mind and just sort of like rebooting your whole system.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It's really amazing how walking, like just the simple act of walking, has so many different benefits for us mentally and emotionally and physically.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Now, if you want some extra credit, this is a little tip from Professor Kent here.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: If you want some extra credit, I encourage you to take your phone and dictate some writing while you're walking so you get some extra value out of that time.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Or you can also do what I often do.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Now, this is definitely a pro tip.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: This is only for those of you who are really serious.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So if you really want extra credit, I recommend that you listen to some good 80s music while you're moving.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, let's just face it, there's no debate that the 1980s had the best music.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: There's no the decade that even comes close.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: The 90s, no.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: The 2000s, no.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: The 70s was pretty good.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: The 60s had the Beatles, so you know, obviously that was great.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: But nothing quite comes close to good old 80s music.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: So whether you're dictating content, you're listening to good 80s music, or you're just kind of wanting some silence and you're just wanting to think and clear the cop bubs out of your head.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Go take a walk.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Whatever you listen to is totally great.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Just get out there and go for a walk.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So, my question for you today is do you integrate walking or exercise as part of your regular routine?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And how does it help your writing and creativity?
