Speaker 1: Chapter thirty six, Pinocchio finally ceases to be a marionette
• 0:05
Speaker 1: and becomes a boy. My dear father, we are saved,
• 0:09
Speaker 1: cried the marionette. All we have to do now is
• 0:11
Speaker 1: to get to shore, and that is easy. Without another word,
• 0:15
Speaker 1: he swam swiftly away in an effort to reach land
• 0:18
Speaker 1: as soon as possible. All at once he noticed that
• 0:20
Speaker 1: Geppetto was shivering and shaking, as if with a high fever.
• 0:25
Speaker 1: Was he shivering from fear or from cold? Who knows,
• 0:28
Speaker 1: perhaps a little of both. But Pinocchio, thinking his father
• 0:32
Speaker 1: was frightened, tried to comfort him by saying, courage, father,
• 0:36
Speaker 1: In a few moments, we shall be safe on land.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: But where is that blessed shore? Asked the little old man,
• 0:43
Speaker 1: more and more worried as he tried to pierce the
• 0:45
Speaker 1: far away shadows. Here, I am searching on all sides,
• 0:50
Speaker 1: and I see nothing but sea and sky. I see
• 0:53
Speaker 1: the shore, the marionette said, Remember, father, that I am
• 0:56
Speaker 1: like a cat. I see better at night than by day.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: Poor Pinocchio pretended to be peaceful and contented, but he
• 1:04
Speaker 1: was far from that. He was beginning to feel discouraged.
• 1:07
Speaker 1: His strength was leaving him, and his breathing was becoming
• 1:10
Speaker 1: more and more labored. He felt he could not go
• 1:13
Speaker 1: on much longer, and the shore was still far away.
• 1:16
Speaker 1: He swam a few more strokes, then he turned to
• 1:19
Speaker 1: Geppetto and cried out weakly, help me, father, help me
• 1:23
Speaker 1: from dying. Father and son were really about to drown
• 1:27
Speaker 1: when they heard a voice like a guitar out of tune,
• 1:30
Speaker 1: call from the sea. What is the trouble? It is
• 1:33
Speaker 1: I and my poor father. I know that voice. You
• 1:37
Speaker 1: are Pinocchio exactly, and you I am the tunny, your
• 1:42
Speaker 1: companion and the shark's stomach. And how did you escape?
• 1:47
Speaker 1: I imitated your example. You are the one who showed
• 1:49
Speaker 1: me the way, and after you went, I followed, Tunny.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: You arrived at the right moment. I implore you for
• 1:56
Speaker 1: the love you bear your children, the little tunnies, to
• 1:59
Speaker 1: help us, or we are lost with great pleasure. Indeed,
• 2:02
Speaker 1: hang on to my tail, both of you, and let
• 2:04
Speaker 1: me lead you in a twinkling. You'll be safe on land.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: Geppetto and Pinocchio, as you can easily imagine, did not
• 2:11
Speaker 1: refuse the invitation. Indeed, instead of hanging on to the tail,
• 2:15
Speaker 1: they thought it better to climb on the tunny's back.
• 2:18
Speaker 1: Are we too heavy, asked Pinocchio heavy, Not in the least,
• 2:23
Speaker 1: you are as light as seashells, answered the tunny, who
• 2:26
Speaker 1: was as large as a two year old horse. As
• 2:29
Speaker 1: soon as they reached the shore, Pinocchio was the first
• 2:32
Speaker 1: to jump to the ground to help his old father.
• 2:35
Speaker 1: Then he turned to the fish and said to him,
• 2:38
Speaker 1: dear friend, you have saved my father, and I have
• 2:40
Speaker 1: not enough words with which to thank you. Allow me
• 2:43
Speaker 1: to embrace you as a sign of my eternal gratitude.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: The tunny stuck his nose out of the water, and
• 2:48
Speaker 1: Pinocchio knelt on the sand and kissed him most affectionately
• 2:52
Speaker 1: on his cheek. At this warm greeting, the poor tunny,
• 2:55
Speaker 1: who was not used to such tenderness, wept like a child.
• 2:59
Speaker 1: He felt so embarrassed and ashamed that he turned quickly,
• 3:03
Speaker 1: plunged into the sea, and disappeared. In the meantime, day
• 3:06
Speaker 1: had dawned. Pinocchio offered his arm to Geppetto, who was
• 3:10
Speaker 1: so weak he could hardly stand, and said to him,
• 3:14
Speaker 1: lean on my arm, dear father, and let us go.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: We will walk very very slowly, and if we feel tired.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: We can rest by the wayside. And where are we going?
• 3:24
Speaker 1: Asked geppetto, to look for a house or a hut
• 3:28
Speaker 1: where they will be kind enough to give us a
• 3:30
Speaker 1: bite of bread and a bit of straw to sleep on.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: They had not taken a hundred steps when they saw
• 3:36
Speaker 1: two rough looking individuals sitting on a stone begging for alms.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: It was the fox and the cat, but one could
• 3:43
Speaker 1: hardly recognize them. They looked so miserable. The cat, after
• 3:47
Speaker 1: pretending to be blind for so many years, had really
• 3:49
Speaker 1: lost sight of both eyes. The fox, old thin and
• 3:53
Speaker 1: almost hairless, had even lost his tail. That sly thief
• 3:57
Speaker 1: had fallen into deepest poverty, and one day he had
• 4:01
Speaker 1: been forced to sell his beautiful tail for a bite
• 4:03
Speaker 1: to eat. Oh, Pinocchio, he cried in a tearful voice,
• 4:07
Speaker 1: Give us some alms. We beg of you. We are old,
• 4:11
Speaker 1: tired and sick. Sick, repeated the cat. Adio false friends,
• 4:17
Speaker 1: answered the marionette. You cheated me once, but you will
• 4:20
Speaker 1: never catch me again. Believe us today, we are truly
• 4:24
Speaker 1: poor and starving. Starving, repeated the cat. If you are poor,
• 4:30
Speaker 1: you deserve it. Remember the old proverb which says, stolen
• 4:34
Speaker 1: money never bears fruit. Aadio, false friends, have mercy on us.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: On us adio, false friends, remember the old proverb which says,
• 4:45
Speaker 1: bad wheat always makes poor bread. Do not abandon us,
• 4:50
Speaker 1: abandon us, repeated the cat adio, false friends, remember the
• 4:56
Speaker 1: old proverb. Whoever steals his neighbor's shirt, usually he dies
• 5:00
Speaker 1: without his own. Waving goodbye to them, Pinocchio and Geppetto
• 5:04
Speaker 1: calmly went on their way. A few more steps, they
• 5:08
Speaker 1: saw at the end of a long road, near a
• 5:10
Speaker 1: clump of trees, a tiny cottage built of straw. Some
• 5:14
Speaker 1: one must live in that hut, said Pinocchio. Let us
• 5:18
Speaker 1: see for ourselves. They went and knocked on the door.
• 5:23
Speaker 1: Who is it, said a little voice from within. A
• 5:26
Speaker 1: poor father and a poorer son, without food and no
• 5:29
Speaker 1: roof to cover them, answered the marionette. Turn the key
• 5:34
Speaker 1: and the door will open, said the same little voice.
• 5:38
Speaker 1: Pinocchio turned the key, and the door opened. As soon
• 5:41
Speaker 1: as they went in. They looked here and there and everywhere,
• 5:44
Speaker 1: but saw no one. Oh ho, where is the owner
• 5:48
Speaker 1: of the hut? Cried Pinocchio, very much surprised. Here I
• 5:53
Speaker 1: am up here, father and son looked up at the ceiling,
• 5:57
Speaker 1: and there on the beam set the talking cricket. Oh,
• 6:00
Speaker 1: my dear cricket, said Pinocchio, bowing politely. Oh now you
• 6:05
Speaker 1: can call me your dear cricket. But do you remember
• 6:08
Speaker 1: when you threw your hammer to kill me. You are right,
• 6:11
Speaker 1: dear cricket, throw a hammer at me now I deserve it.
• 6:14
Speaker 1: But spare my poor old father. I am going to
• 6:17
Speaker 1: spare both the father and the son. I have only
• 6:20
Speaker 1: wanted to remind you of the trick you long ago
• 6:22
Speaker 1: played upon me. I teach you that in this world
• 6:25
Speaker 1: of ours, we must be kind and courteous to others
• 6:28
Speaker 1: if we want to find kindness in our own days
• 6:30
Speaker 1: of trouble. You are right, little cricket, you are more
• 6:34
Speaker 1: than right, and I shall remember the lesson you have
• 6:36
Speaker 1: taught me. But will you tell me how you succeeded
• 6:39
Speaker 1: in buying this pretty little cottage. This cottage was given
• 6:43
Speaker 1: to me yesterday by a little goat with blue hair.
• 6:47
Speaker 1: And where did the goat go? Asked Pinocchio. I don't know,
• 6:51
Speaker 1: And when will she be back? She will never come back.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: Yesterday she went away bleeding sadly, and it seemed to
• 6:57
Speaker 1: me she said poor Pinocchio. Sh I'll never see him again.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: The shark must have eaten him by this time. Were
• 7:04
Speaker 1: those are real words? Then it was she? It was
• 7:08
Speaker 1: my dear little fairy, cried out Pinocchio, sobbing bitterly. After
• 7:12
Speaker 1: he had cried a long time, he wiped his eyes,
• 7:15
Speaker 1: and then he made a bed of straw for old geppetto.
• 7:17
Speaker 1: He laid him on it and said to the talking cricket,
• 7:20
Speaker 1: tell me, little cricket, where shall I find a glass
• 7:23
Speaker 1: of milk for my poor father. Three fields away from
• 7:26
Speaker 1: here lives farmer John. He has some cows. Go there
• 7:29
Speaker 1: and he will give you what you want. Pinocchio ran
• 7:32
Speaker 1: all the way to Farmer John's house. The farmer said
• 7:35
Speaker 1: to him, how much milk do you want? I want
• 7:38
Speaker 1: a full glass. A full glass costs a penny. First
• 7:41
Speaker 1: give me the penny. I have no penny, answered Pinocchio,
• 7:45
Speaker 1: sad and ashamed. Very bad, my Marionette answered the farmer,
• 7:50
Speaker 1: very bad. If you have no penny, I have no milk.
• 7:54
Speaker 1: Too bad, said Pinocchio, and started to go. Wait a moment,
• 7:59
Speaker 1: said farmer John, perhaps we can come to terms. Do
• 8:02
Speaker 1: you know how to draw water from a well? I
• 8:04
Speaker 1: can try. Then, go to that well you see yonder
• 8:08
Speaker 1: and draw one hundred bucketfuls of water very well. After
• 8:13
Speaker 1: you have finished, I shall give you a glass of warm,
• 8:15
Speaker 1: sweet milk. I am satisfied. Farmer John took the marionette
• 8:20
Speaker 1: to the well and showed him how to draw the water.
• 8:23
Speaker 1: Pinocchio set to work as well as he knew how,
• 8:26
Speaker 1: But long before he had pulled up the one hundred buckets,
• 8:29
Speaker 1: he was tired out and dripping with perspiration. He had
• 8:33
Speaker 1: never worked so hard in his life until to day.
• 8:37
Speaker 1: The farmer said, my donkey has drawn the water for me.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: But now that poor animal is dying, will you take
• 8:43
Speaker 1: me to see him? Said Pinocchio gladly. As soon as
• 8:48
Speaker 1: Pinocchio went into the stable, he spied a little donkey
• 8:51
Speaker 1: lying on a bed of straw in the corner of
• 8:53
Speaker 1: the stable. He was worn out from hunger and too
• 8:56
Speaker 1: much work. After looking at him a long time, he
• 8:58
Speaker 1: said to himself, I know that donkey. I've seen him before,
• 9:03
Speaker 1: And bending low over him, he asked, who are you?
• 9:06
Speaker 1: At this question, the donkey opened weary dying eyes and
• 9:11
Speaker 1: answered in the same tongue, I am lamp Wick. Then
• 9:14
Speaker 1: he closed his eyes and died. Oh my poor lamp wick,
• 9:19
Speaker 1: said Pinocchio in a faint voice, as he wiped his
• 9:21
Speaker 1: eyes with some straw he had picked up from the ground.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: Do you feel sorry for a little donkey that has
• 9:26
Speaker 1: cost you nothing? Said the farmer? What should I do?
• 9:30
Speaker 1: I who have paid my good money for him? But
• 9:33
Speaker 1: you see, he was my friend, your friend, a classmate
• 9:38
Speaker 1: of mine. What shouted farmer John, bursting out laughing, What
• 9:44
Speaker 1: you had donkeys in your school? How you must have studied?
• 9:48
Speaker 1: The marionette, ashamed and hurt by those words, did not answer, but,
• 9:51
Speaker 1: taking his glass of milk, returned to his father. From
• 9:55
Speaker 1: that day on, for more than five months, Pinocchio got
• 9:59
Speaker 1: up every morning just as dawn was breaking and went
• 10:02
Speaker 1: to the farm to draw water, And every day he
• 10:05
Speaker 1: was given a glass of warm milk for his poor
• 10:07
Speaker 1: old father, who grew stronger and better day by day.
• 10:11
Speaker 1: But he was not satisfied with this. He learned to
• 10:14
Speaker 1: make baskets of reeds and sold them. With the money
• 10:17
Speaker 1: he received, he and his father were able to keep
• 10:19
Speaker 1: from starving. Among other things, he built a rolling chair,
• 10:23
Speaker 1: strong and comfortable to take his old father out for
• 10:25
Speaker 1: an airing on bright sunny days. In the evening, the
• 10:29
Speaker 1: marionette studied by lamp light. With some of the money
• 10:33
Speaker 1: he had earned, he bought himself a second hand volume
• 10:35
Speaker 1: that had a few pages missing, and with that he
• 10:38
Speaker 1: learned to read in a very short time. As far
• 10:42
Speaker 1: as writing was concerned, he used a long stick at
• 10:45
Speaker 1: one end of which he had whittled a long, fine
• 10:47
Speaker 1: point ink. He had none, so he used the juice
• 10:51
Speaker 1: of blackberries or cherries. Little by little, his diligence was rewarded.
• 10:55
Speaker 1: He succeeded not only in his studies, but also in
• 10:59
Speaker 1: his work, and a day came when he put enough
• 11:01
Speaker 1: money together to keep his old father comfortable and happy.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: Besides this, he was able to save the great amount
• 11:08
Speaker 1: of fifty pennies. With it, he wanted to buy himself
• 11:11
Speaker 1: a new suit. One day, he said to his father,
• 11:15
Speaker 1: I am going to the market place to buy myself
• 11:17
Speaker 1: a coat, a cap, and a pair of shoes. When
• 11:20
Speaker 1: I come back, i'll be so dressed up you will
• 11:22
Speaker 1: think I am a rich man. He ran out of
• 11:25
Speaker 1: the house and up the road to the village, laughing
• 11:28
Speaker 1: and singing. Suddenly he heard his name called, and looking
• 11:32
Speaker 1: around to see whence the voice came from he noticed
• 11:35
Speaker 1: a large snail crawling out of some bushes. Don't you
• 11:38
Speaker 1: recognize me? Said the snail? Yes and no. Do you
• 11:42
Speaker 1: remember the snail that lived with the fairy with azure hair?
• 11:45
Speaker 1: Do you not remember how she opened the door for
• 11:48
Speaker 1: you one night and gave you something to eat? I
• 11:50
Speaker 1: remember everything, cried Pinocchio. Answer me quickly, pretty snail. Where
• 11:55
Speaker 1: have you left my fairy? What is she doing? Has
• 11:58
Speaker 1: she forgiven me? Does she remember me? Does she still
• 12:01
Speaker 1: love me? Is she very far away from me? May
• 12:04
Speaker 1: I see her? At all? These questions tumbling out one
• 12:07
Speaker 1: after another, the snail answered, calm as ever, my dear Pinocchio,
• 12:12
Speaker 1: the fairy is lying ill in a hospital in a hospital. Yes, indeed,
• 12:18
Speaker 1: she has been stricken with trouble and illness. And she
• 12:21
Speaker 1: hasn't a penny left with which to buy a bite
• 12:23
Speaker 1: of bread. Really, Oh, how sorry I am, my poor
• 12:27
Speaker 1: dear little fairy. If I had a million, I should
• 12:30
Speaker 1: run to her with it, but I have only fifty pennies.
• 12:34
Speaker 1: Here they are I was just going to buy some clothes. Here,
• 12:38
Speaker 1: Take them, little snail, and give them to my good fairy.
• 12:41
Speaker 1: What about the new clothes? What does that matter. I
• 12:44
Speaker 1: shall like to sell these rags I have on to
• 12:46
Speaker 1: help her more. Go and hurry come back here within
• 12:50
Speaker 1: a couple of days, and I hope to have more
• 12:52
Speaker 1: money for you. Until to day, I have worked for
• 12:55
Speaker 1: my father. Now I shall have to work for my
• 12:57
Speaker 1: mother also. Good Bye, and I hope to see I
• 13:00
Speaker 1: see you soon. The snail, much against her usual habit,
• 13:04
Speaker 1: began to run like a lizard under a summer sun.
• 13:07
Speaker 1: When Pinocchio returned home, his father asked him, and where
• 13:11
Speaker 1: is the new suit? I couldn't find one to fit me.
• 13:14
Speaker 1: I shall have to look again some other day. That night, Pinocchio,
• 13:18
Speaker 1: instead of going to bed at ten o'clock, waited until midnight,
• 13:21
Speaker 1: and instead of making eight baskets, he made sixteen. After
• 13:25
Speaker 1: that he went to bed and fell asleep. As he slept,
• 13:29
Speaker 1: he dreamed of his fairy, beautiful, smiling and happy, who
• 13:33
Speaker 1: kissed him and said to him, Bravo, Pinocchio. In reward
• 13:37
Speaker 1: for your kind heart, I forgive you for all your
• 13:40
Speaker 1: old mischief. Boys who love and take good care of
• 13:43
Speaker 1: their parents when they are old and sick deserve praise,
• 13:46
Speaker 1: even though they may not be held up as models
• 13:49
Speaker 1: of obedience and good behavior. Keep on doing well, and
• 13:53
Speaker 1: you will be happy. At that very moment, Pinocchio awoke
• 13:58
Speaker 1: and opened wide his eyes. What was his surprise and
• 14:01
Speaker 1: his joy when, on looking himself over, he saw that
• 14:04
Speaker 1: he was no longer a marionette, but that he had
• 14:07
Speaker 1: become a real live boy. He looked all about him,
• 14:11
Speaker 1: and instead of the usual walls of straw, he found
• 14:15
Speaker 1: himself in a beautifully furnished little room, the prettiest he
• 14:19
Speaker 1: had ever seen. In a twinkling, he jumped down from
• 14:22
Speaker 1: his bed to look at the chair standing near There
• 14:26
Speaker 1: he found a new suit, a new hat, and a
• 14:28
Speaker 1: pair of shoes. As soon as he was dressed, he
• 14:31
Speaker 1: put his hands in his pockets and pulled out a
• 14:34
Speaker 1: little leather purse, on which were written the following words,
• 14:37
Speaker 1: The fairy with azure hair returns fifty pennies for her
• 14:41
Speaker 1: dear Pinocchio, with many thanks for his kind heart. The
• 14:46
Speaker 1: marionette opened the purse to find the money, and behold
• 14:49
Speaker 1: there were fifty gold coins. Pinocchio ran to the mirror.
• 14:54
Speaker 1: He hardly recognized himself. The bright face of a tall
• 14:57
Speaker 1: boy looked at him with wide awake blue eyes, eyes,
• 15:00
Speaker 1: dark brown hair, and happy smiling lips. Surrounded by so
• 15:05
Speaker 1: much splendor, the marionette hardly knew what he was doing.
• 15:09
Speaker 1: He rubbed his eyes two or three times, wondering if
• 15:12
Speaker 1: he were still asleep or awake, and decided he must
• 15:15
Speaker 1: be awake. And where is father? He cried? Suddenly he
• 15:19
Speaker 1: ran into the next room, and there stood Geppetto, grown
• 15:23
Speaker 1: years younger, overnight, spick and span in his new clothes,
• 15:27
Speaker 1: and gay as a lark. In the morning, he was
• 15:30
Speaker 1: once more mastro Geppetto, the wood carver, hard at work
• 15:34
Speaker 1: on a lovely picture frame, decorating it with flowers and
• 15:37
Speaker 1: leaves and heads of animals. Father, father, what has happened?
• 15:42
Speaker 1: Tell me if you can, cried Pinocchio, as he ran
• 15:45
Speaker 1: and jumped on his father's neck. This sudden change in
• 15:48
Speaker 1: our house is all your doing, My dear Pinocchio, answered Geppetto,
• 15:52
Speaker 1: What have I to do with it? Just this? When
• 15:56
Speaker 1: bad boys become good and kind, they have the power
• 15:59
Speaker 1: of making their homes gay and new with happiness. I
• 16:04
Speaker 1: wonder where the old Pinocchio of Wood has hidden himself.
• 16:07
Speaker 1: There he is, answered Geppetto, and he pointed to a
• 16:11
Speaker 1: large marionette leaning against a chair head turned to one side,
• 16:16
Speaker 1: arms hanging limp, and legs twisted under him. After a long,
• 16:20
Speaker 1: long look, Pinocchio said to himself with great content, how
• 16:25
Speaker 1: ridiculous I was as a marionette, and how happy I
• 16:28
Speaker 1: am now that I have become a real boy. End
• 16:33
Speaker 1: of Chapter thirty six.
