- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Brady Randall.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Well, jealousy and revenge can cause us to do some crazy things.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Envy, bitterness, and jealousy left unchecked, can absolutely devastate and be deadly.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And we see that play out in Genesis 37.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: This is what we read in verses twelve through nineteen.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And Israel said to Joseph, As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Come, I am going to send you to them.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Very well he replied, so he said to him, Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Then he sent them off from the valley of Hebron.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: When Joseph arrived at Shechem, a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, What are you looking for?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: He replied, I'm looking for my brothers.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: They have moved on from here, the man answered.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I heard them say, Let's go to Dothan.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So Joseph went after his brothers, and he found them near Dothan.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them they plotted to kill him.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Here comes that dreamer, they said to each other.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Come now, let's kill him, throw him into one of the cisterns, and say that a ferocious animal devoured him.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Then we'll see what comes of his dreams.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So Jacob, or Israel, as he's called here, tells Joseph to go and check on his brothers and come back and bring a report.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And Joseph realizes that his brothers have gone farther north from Shechem to Dotham, which would have been around a 15 to 20 mile trek that he would have to travel to find them.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But notice, this is not an insignificant detail.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: God is at work, even in the background.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: When we can't see him, when we don't know his timing, God is at work.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And so he's coming to this area and he put Joseph closer to merchants who would have been traveling on their way to Egypt to find Joseph in his dire situation.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: But before he can get there, the brothers are already plotting then.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: They're plotting to kill him.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, imagine that.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: So much hatred and jealousy and resentment harbored in their hearts that they decide that the very best thing they can do is to do away with this brother for good.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And so they see him and they begin mocking him and saying, here comes the dreamer.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: And the plot thickens as they decide to throw him into a cistern where an animal would rip him to shreds and devour him.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: That's the thought that they want to give across.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: That's their story.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And I just want to stop and ask, what in the world leads a human heart to such a devastating and destructive place?
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: This has been going on since from the very beginning of time.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And before you say I'd never stoop to that level, just consider the hatred and jealousy in your heart and mind.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: When Jesus was speaking in the Sermon on the Mount some two thousand years ago, he said in Matthew chapter 5, verse 21, You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, you shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: But I tell you that anyone who is even angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And anyone who says to a brother or sister, Rakah, is answerable to the court.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And anyone who says, You fool, will be in danger of the fire of hell.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: So Jesus does not let us off easy.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: The hatred in our hearts is a recognition and a reminder of the sin that can seep into each one of us, that if left unchecked, not only can lead to the killing of others, but even worse, can lead to our own eternal destructive death in hell, apart from God forever.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: For it was for this very sin, for hateful, destructive hearts, that led Jesus Christ to go resolutely to the cross.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: That his death would pave the way that we might give up bitterness and the harbor of such anger to be able to give it to God.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: That God would remove a heart of stone and hate and anger and give us a soft heart of flesh, one that is softened towards him and even those who we formerly hated.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: That can't happen without God's intervention.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And so I want to invite you today to give up any feelings of bitterness, anger, rage, or hatred, and give it to Jesus Christ.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Let him crucify those feelings and give you a supernatural love even for your enemies.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: For at one time, it was while we were yet enemies that Christ died for us.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Thanks for joining us here today.
