- 0:00Speaker 1: All his life, this woman has said, yo, them birds,
- 0:02Speaker 1: them birds, you know. And then when he shook, she's like, oh,
- 0:05Speaker 1: I guess the birds weren't lying.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:07Speaker 3: But she's also talking to senior, too.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Yes.
- 0:10Speaker 3: That was the craziest thing to me.
- 0:12Speaker 1: No, that was a crazy moment because she also says
- 0:14Speaker 1: that fear is contagious.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Yeah.

- 1:59Speaker 2: The Quiet Storm.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Himself. Yes, yes. Yes, and we are back. As you said,
- 2:05Speaker 1: Superman cannot believe how good this show is. Lanterns Episode 3.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Entitled Outcast. It is written by Vanessa Bading Kelly. Off top.
- 2:18Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 2:19Speaker 1: Off top. One of the executive producers of this show.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Want to give them all the respect and love. All
- 2:27Speaker 1: the flowers. And as I've seen going around, this feels
- 2:31Speaker 1: like this is the Emmy episode. Like this is the
- 2:34Speaker 1: one they submit for Emmy consideration. All that. It's entitled Outcast.
- 2:39Speaker 1: My favorite group of all time. End of story. I mean,
- 2:44Speaker 1: 10 of 10. You know, like, you can't end an
- 2:47Speaker 1: episode with gasoline fucking dreams and not expect me to
- 2:52Speaker 1: jump out of my seat ready to tear my TV
- 2:54Speaker 1: off the wall. Like, Lord have mercy, y'all. Yeah, no.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Easily my favorite episode of the season, without a doubt.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Just phenomenal. Like, writing, directing, editing, pacing, acting, everything. Just perfection. Mm-hmm.
- 3:14Speaker 2: If nothing else, easily one of the blackest episodes, for sure.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Easily.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Sure.
- 3:19Speaker 5: One of the episodes I was waiting for, particularly once
- 3:23Speaker 5: back to my original question at the beginning of the season,
- 3:25Speaker 5: how far are.
- 3:26Speaker 2: They going to take it?
- 3:27Speaker 5: Are they going to be for real and upfront about
- 3:30Speaker 5: blackness and its effect on everything? Even on a fictional, quote,
- 3:35Speaker 5: fictional world, how does this matter to the people, right?
- 3:39Speaker 2: So how does this.
- 3:41Speaker 5: inform the decisions that are being made or the decisions
- 3:44Speaker 5: that don't get made right so i just love that
- 3:47Speaker 5: they dove really deeply into this and the understanding that
- 3:52Speaker 5: some people beings from other planets don't really know how
- 3:55Speaker 5: it how shit happens over here and how shit operates
- 3:58Speaker 5: and are you aware of the deaths of, you know,
- 4:01Speaker 5: the things that you do?
- 4:03Speaker 2: And I just, I did particularly love it.
- 4:06Speaker 5: The biggest thing for me was getting a full origin
- 4:08Speaker 5: story for Jon Stewart from what I saw in the,
- 4:13Speaker 5: what the after credits or the, the, the kind of,
- 4:16Speaker 5: what they call a director's cut stuff where Vanessa Bain
- 4:18Speaker 5: and Kelly was speaking.
- 4:19Speaker 2: She was like, there's not much by way of backstory
- 4:21Speaker 2: for Jon Stewart.
- 4:23Speaker 5: And so she got a chance to literally create one,
- 4:26Speaker 5: flesh it out, make this canon for the fan boys
- 4:29Speaker 5: who are out there listening.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So I really thought this was very strong.
- 4:34Speaker 5: It, really answered a lot of questions that we had, like,
- 4:37Speaker 5: in the previews that came out, answered, like, five questions
- 4:39Speaker 5: we had last week, and validated what we had already said,
- 4:43Speaker 5: particularly you, Benhamin.
- 4:45Speaker 2: You caught the whole thing.
- 4:46Speaker 5: You guessed it, and you were completely right, so I
- 4:50Speaker 5: appreciate it.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Thank you. Yeah.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Portia.
- 4:56Speaker 3: For me, I had questions about, like, where was the
- 4:59Speaker 3: mom the whole time, and got all the answers to
- 5:02Speaker 3: that in ways that had me, like, If you could
- 5:05Speaker 3: see my notes, because I write them, so many goddammit
- 5:09Speaker 3: Bernadettes in here, like, damn, damn Bernadette. So I can't
- 5:15Speaker 3: wait to get into all of that, because I really, wow,
- 5:20Speaker 3: she's a formidable woman in many ways, I suppose we
- 5:23Speaker 3: can say.
- 5:24Speaker 2: She scared the shit out of me, bro. I ain't
- 5:26Speaker 2: gonna hold you.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I mean, we got a new contender for no more
- 5:30Speaker 1: wire hangers. Worst mom of all time.
- 5:32Speaker 4: I think she got Chip Fields beat, dog.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I'm with you I gotta jump in.
- 5:41Speaker 1: With that and then it's like you know she's like
- 5:44Speaker 1: outpacing the competition right now I.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Gotta jump in with you on that Portia as a
- 5:49Speaker 5: black woman I was like damn you black women harder
- 5:51Speaker 5: than me cause my god I was like god I
- 5:56Speaker 5: was like I know and you know and I got
- 5:58Speaker 5: a kid and I'm just like damn like did I
- 6:01Speaker 5: ever like would I ever do that for like whoa
- 6:04Speaker 5: that's on some other type of timing and I get
- 6:08Speaker 5: it as a fellow black I also was like, damn,
- 6:12Speaker 5: did you have to go that hard?
- 6:15Speaker 1: Every time she walks into the room, ride or die, chicks,
- 6:17Speaker 1: just start playing. Like, every time.
- 6:22Speaker 3: And listen, you can argue, like, what's at stake, right?
- 6:26Speaker 2: They made it very.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Vanessa Bain and Kelly and friends made it very existential
- 6:30Speaker 5: about what was at stake, right?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Like, not just.
- 6:32Speaker 5: It really was more than just being the lantern to
- 6:35Speaker 5: take that mantle to... it's about taking that next step
- 6:39Speaker 5: for who you are to become. Cause they made a
- 6:41Speaker 5: very big point to wrap that up, particularly in blackness
- 6:44Speaker 5: of how the typical tropes, you gotta be better than,
- 6:47Speaker 5: or triple times better than you gotta do more. You
- 6:49Speaker 5: gotta do this just to get a little, you gotta
- 6:51Speaker 5: make yourself seen. And so this had mad layers on
- 6:55Speaker 5: top of everything else. So I think that's probably also what,
- 6:59Speaker 5: to your point, Portia, about her just being like, damn Bernadette.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I was also, my.
- 7:03Speaker 5: Body was responding to kind of the, importance of what
- 7:08Speaker 5: was happening it's more than just training to get a
- 7:10Speaker 5: ring it's a lot more.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Than that bj bro yeah nah it's like props to
- 7:17Speaker 6: their whole writing team but like just i i have
- 7:21Speaker 6: trouble putting into words how i felt about that episode
- 7:24Speaker 6: like it's so many layers right like being raised by
- 7:27Speaker 6: a single mom in the south right like there's so
- 7:31Speaker 6: much of maybe i shouldn't say it this way after
- 7:33Speaker 6: this but so much of my mother that I see
- 7:36Speaker 6: in Bernadette.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:38Speaker 6: And, and not, you know, to the, to the extremes
- 7:40Speaker 6: that we see her take, but like the fact that
- 7:43Speaker 6: Bernadette put her family on her back, like, because it
- 7:46Speaker 6: was not just that, you know, John might become a lantern.
- 7:50Speaker 6: It was like, no, my entire family's reputation and the
- 7:53Speaker 6: rest of our livelihood depends.
- 7:55Speaker 4: On this training.
- 7:57Speaker 6: And Bennett, when we, when you kind of floated your
- 8:00Speaker 6: theory in last episode, I was kind of obsessing over
- 8:03Speaker 6: the idea of John Sr. as that stage or sports
- 8:08Speaker 6: dad living vicariously. So the mom being the crazy one
- 8:14Speaker 6: was not on my bingo card.
- 8:15Speaker 4: It hit me so much. Not on mine either. Out
- 8:17Speaker 4: of left field. I was like, yo.
- 8:19Speaker 3: That's why I kept saying, damn it, Bernadette. Because I'm saying,
- 8:23Speaker 3: damn it, Bernadette, for like... yes, for junior, but also
- 8:27Speaker 3: for how she talks to senior. And she's like, you
- 8:30Speaker 3: need this. Like, she's like, I'm like she, and it's
- 8:34Speaker 3: hard to untangle how much of it was her carrying
- 8:39Speaker 3: guilt for being part of like, She knows the strife
- 8:44Speaker 3: of a Black man in America. She's living with this man.
- 8:48Speaker 3: She contributed to him thinking that he was crazy. And
- 8:51Speaker 3: now it's like, is that compensation for her to get
- 8:54Speaker 3: over her guilt to push so hard for him to
- 8:56Speaker 3: move the way that he moves? Because she's like, I
- 9:00Speaker 3: need to compensate for like, I made his strife worse
- 9:04Speaker 3: and I'm supposed to be his support. And like, it's
- 9:08Speaker 3: just like the layer, like, it's just so much. And
- 9:12Speaker 3: there's like Bernadette girl. And then she's like, you see her.
- 9:16Speaker 3: in the room with the radio trying to communicate with
- 9:19Speaker 3: aliens that she's only met one of once. And you
- 9:23Speaker 3: knew when she told him the story, Junior, the story
- 9:26Speaker 3: about the birds being the aliens and watching on him,
- 9:29Speaker 3: it doesn't ring true, but she's convicted. She's so convicted
- 9:35Speaker 3: the whole time talking to him that you're just like, okay,
- 9:39Speaker 3: maybe there's more going on than we know or whatever.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And I, the way that she's able to carry that out,
- 9:45Speaker 3: like that is like, again, to your point, which is like, yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 3: not to this extreme, but like my, like Black mothers
- 9:51Speaker 3: in the South, the ones I witnessed, like that's some,
- 9:54Speaker 3: that is the kind of like what I witnessed is like,
- 9:57Speaker 3: they may not believe everything they're telling you. but they're
- 10:00Speaker 3: telling you for a reason and you need to go
- 10:03Speaker 3: with it and they can't like you can question later
- 10:06Speaker 3: they can give you the more full details later and
- 10:08Speaker 3: i'm glad she ended up doing that we're gonna get
- 10:09Speaker 3: through all that i'm sure but i'm that was one
- 10:13Speaker 3: of the things that kind of stayed with me is
- 10:15Speaker 3: that like like the earlier episodes had me questioning like
- 10:18Speaker 3: what is john's relationship with his parents for him to
- 10:21Speaker 3: have like gone through all the the bullet holes is
- 10:24Speaker 3: bears like testifies to all the stuff he's gone through
- 10:26Speaker 3: through his childhood in that household and for him to
- 10:31Speaker 3: be calling his father in the episode where he's like
- 10:35Speaker 3: having issues with how i'm just like what is his
- 10:37Speaker 3: relationship for him to feel that way and then we
- 10:40Speaker 3: get to this and it's like damn for Like, she's
- 10:44Speaker 3: the reason for the season behind all of this.
- 10:47Speaker 1: As someone who grew up, like I've said before, in
- 10:50Speaker 1: the South with a military father and not a Bernadette mom,
- 10:54Speaker 1: my mom was definitely someone who guided me and, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: was helped and, you know, believed in everything that I did.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You know, she was one who I wanted to be
- 11:05Speaker 1: a film director, anything I wanted to do. Both my
- 11:08Speaker 1: parents in that regard. But at the same time, Like
- 11:12Speaker 1: you said, Portia, my mom would say things that she
- 11:15Speaker 1: might not believe in. And my mom had a heavy
- 11:18Speaker 1: hand when my dad didn't. My mom would slap the
- 11:21Speaker 1: living life out of me, would do whatever needed to
- 11:24Speaker 1: be done to keep me safe and keep me on
- 11:26Speaker 1: a path. You know, as they continually say in this episode,
- 11:30Speaker 1: the path that you're on. And my first one that
- 11:35Speaker 1: really just sticks with me is like they really tell
- 11:38Speaker 1: their son at five years old. That he's going to
- 11:41Speaker 1: be space Jesus.
- 11:43Speaker 3: That he's destined.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Destined to be space Jesus. And that's like, I remember
- 11:50Speaker 1: being five. Five is when my memories really start to form.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And I remember a lot more about five than I
- 11:58Speaker 1: do about my previous years. And it's insane to me
- 12:01Speaker 1: that you would tell some kid at five years old
- 12:04Speaker 1: that they're going to be space Jesus. And you're going
- 12:07Speaker 1: to have to go on a very specific path. that
- 12:09Speaker 1: could be different from your family, everything else. It shows
- 12:13Speaker 1: a level of obsession. And I don't like, you know,
- 12:18Speaker 1: calling the parents insane, but they are definitely traumatized. I'll
- 12:23Speaker 1: say that, you know, highly traumatized. And we spoke on
- 12:27Speaker 1: this and I spoke on this last week when I
- 12:28Speaker 1: talked about how, you know, the light coming for the
- 12:30Speaker 1: father and him saying that he would be afraid that
- 12:33Speaker 1: we see in this episode. And I love how that's
- 12:36Speaker 1: touched on because it is the fact that it's, Imagine
- 12:39Speaker 1: the police showing up in the middle of the night,
- 12:40Speaker 1: you know, lights blazing. Are you afraid? You know? Yes.
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yes.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Like, of course, because I'm trying to protect my family.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I'm a black man in America. And a lot of
- 12:50Speaker 1: people are upset and we're going to get on to this,
- 12:52Speaker 1: but they're get, they're tight about, you know, them saying
- 12:56Speaker 1: how Jordan is privileged to not know fear, but he is.
- 13:00Speaker 1: It still is.
- 13:01Speaker 2: It is and still is.
- 13:02Speaker 5: BJ joked about it when it was dead-ass serious when
- 13:04Speaker 5: he mentioned that last week about the privilege of a
- 13:07Speaker 5: white man to just pull up on someone and just,
- 13:09Speaker 5: you know, hit him up. Like, that's his right. It
- 13:13Speaker 5: was a joke, but it was for real. And just
- 13:15Speaker 5: to what you just said, Ben, I mean, I'm going
- 13:17Speaker 5: to say it. These niggas is crazy. They're 100% crazy. However,
- 13:23Speaker 5: sometimes you got to be a little crazy to reach
- 13:25Speaker 5: for the impossible.
- 13:26Speaker 2: The impossible fucking happened.
- 13:28Speaker 5: The impossible, the unknown, the thing that they never would
- 13:32Speaker 5: have imagined in their whole fucking life came down to
- 13:36Speaker 5: them and.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Said, are you afraid? Yes, space Jesus.
- 13:41Speaker 5: I am afraid because I've never seen a triple headed
- 13:43Speaker 5: freak come out of, you know, the cut like that.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Of course. And I'm a man trying to protect my family.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Of course. I don't know what the fuck is going on.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Understood.
- 13:53Speaker 5: To that point, like I said, you, yes, you have
- 13:56Speaker 5: to have a level of obsession to be like, you know,
- 13:59Speaker 5: it's several obsessions. They're like, it's John senior's obsession with
- 14:02Speaker 5: the fact that he got passed over on some shit.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Because he, it was something that just happened to him
- 14:08Speaker 5: that for all his background, for all of his experiences
- 14:11Speaker 5: as a black man, for him having a family, right.
- 14:15Speaker 5: that he answered honestly, like, yes, I am afraid. Whereas,
- 14:19Speaker 5: as we mentioned, Hal didn't necessarily have none of that, right?
- 14:22Speaker 5: He had the privilege and what you want to call
- 14:25Speaker 5: white privilege and male privilege, a whole bunch of different
- 14:27Speaker 5: privileges mixed into one that he didn't.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Feel in all type of ways. He just took that, right?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Fine.
- 14:33Speaker 2: You have the wife portion. You said it very well.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Like, especially after the fact, like she felt like, I
- 14:39Speaker 5: almost felt like it was like an atonement for her
- 14:41Speaker 5: that the fact that you said, like she, she felt
- 14:43Speaker 5: she couldn't, and she apologized for it too. That the
- 14:46Speaker 5: fact that she felt like she contributed to his hardship,
- 14:48Speaker 5: to the fact that she ain't believe him just like
- 14:50Speaker 5: everybody else.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And you could tell, like, she is, she is very.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Black power pro pro black and very much like, I'm
- 14:57Speaker 5: supposed to be your partner. I'm supposed to be your
- 14:59Speaker 5: strength and help you through this and, and vice versa.
- 15:02Speaker 5: And she, She felt a fail. She felt that she
- 15:05Speaker 5: she she she committed a failure towards him, potentially a sin,
- 15:09Speaker 5: sin towards the institution of them.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:11Speaker 5: So I understand that level of obsession. And as mentioned,
- 15:14Speaker 5: you have to be a little bit crazy to believe
- 15:16Speaker 5: in that. She sight unseen for how many years, 20 years, whatever,
- 15:20Speaker 5: how old John was supposed to be by the time
- 15:22Speaker 5: we get 2016, like sight unseen. You're just going to believe,
- 15:27Speaker 5: you know, the blue man came down from space and
- 15:29Speaker 5: told me that I'm going to be a superhero.
- 15:32Speaker 2: My child, my Black child, one of three. She didn't
- 15:35Speaker 2: even tell him that.
- 15:36Speaker 3: That's the funniest thing about this is all interpretation. And
- 15:39Speaker 3: that's part of my question, too, is because when the
- 15:42Speaker 3: Guardian came, some of the things that she, nuggets that
- 15:45Speaker 3: she dropped were, one, there were multiple candidates that were struck.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And a lot of them are dealing with emotional issues
- 15:55Speaker 3: after the situation. So I'm not trying to speak, I'm
- 15:59Speaker 3: never going to speak on the side of white folks.
- 16:01Speaker 3: But to the point of, like, not every, there were other,
- 16:05Speaker 3: probably other white people who were approached with the option
- 16:07Speaker 3: of being Green Lantern, if this is what's happening in
- 16:09Speaker 3: this universe. And they were afraid, and Hal had the
- 16:13Speaker 3: privilege of being able to say, I'm not afraid. And
- 16:17Speaker 3: I think that what I love about Bernadette saying that, like,
- 16:21Speaker 3: the alien didn't do their discovery work, they didn't do
- 16:23Speaker 3: their research, was that, like, There's so many layers to that.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Even in space, y'all don't care about us. I think
- 16:30Speaker 3: that's also kind of the point that Ben made from
- 16:32Speaker 3: that one frame in the comics or whatever, where there's
- 16:35Speaker 3: the alien who's asking the lanterns, like, do you care
- 16:37Speaker 3: about Black folks kind of thing? And I wonder if
- 16:39Speaker 3: we're going to see that, or this is their way.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Of interpreting it for the show. That was this, yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 3: So it's just interesting to me because I feel like
- 16:48Speaker 3: It's interesting to me that the alien, because her whole
- 16:51Speaker 3: vantage point of coming to Bernadette in that moment was
- 16:55Speaker 3: that we know that we've caused distress. And why is
- 17:00Speaker 3: this alien more concerned about causing distress and failing to
- 17:04Speaker 3: recruit people than the army in the US, at least,
- 17:09Speaker 3: but I know across the world? It's about the people
- 17:11Speaker 3: that they have go through like basic training and stuff
- 17:13Speaker 3: and they warp mentally. And they're dealing with that for years.
- 17:16Speaker 3: People they have go through wars and stuff like that.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Humans against humans. And they're just like, well, we're used
- 17:21Speaker 3: to humans being in conflict with each other. We're used
- 17:23Speaker 3: to causing emotional turmoil. So we're not going to check
- 17:25Speaker 3: up on you. We're not going to check on your
- 17:26Speaker 3: mental health. We're not going to give you those benefits
- 17:28Speaker 3: unless you like work really hard to like show that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: You need them.
- 17:31Speaker 3: But here comes this alien with a diamond. Like we
- 17:34Speaker 3: care about your emotional turmoil, but also we don't care
- 17:38Speaker 3: enough to actually figure out like, what you may need
- 17:41Speaker 3: specifically to make that happen so for her for bernadette
- 17:45Speaker 3: and for um john senior to move forward with this
- 17:48Speaker 3: idea that they have a child who has been chosen
- 17:53Speaker 3: when really all the guardian said is that he could
- 17:56Speaker 3: he could be a candidate for the future and they're
- 17:59Speaker 3: using they're creating the story narrative around him this little
- 18:02Speaker 3: fairy tale for him that he has been chosen and
- 18:05Speaker 3: And the birth is part of like, it's like, it's
- 18:08Speaker 3: making him a Disney princess in a way, right? Like
- 18:09Speaker 3: he has the births for him and he's destined to
- 18:12Speaker 3: be this thing and people he's been chosen. So it's,
- 18:16Speaker 3: it's very interesting. Like how there there's the reality of
- 18:21Speaker 3: it all, but then they're embracing the fantasy of it
- 18:23Speaker 3: to make it real. It's just like a really interesting
- 18:26Speaker 3: kind of layer there.
- 18:27Speaker 5: I found it funny that the guardians with all their
- 18:30Speaker 5: research thought, giving me a giant fucking hope diamond with a,
- 18:34Speaker 5: Fixed everything.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Nigga, give me the cash. The money.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I mean, they ended up being able to use the
- 18:39Speaker 3: diamond money eventually, so.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Yeah, but it's also like, who knows how much they actually,
- 18:44Speaker 5: that was a priceless diamond. Understand, like, there's no amount
- 18:47Speaker 5: of money they could have got fairly, right? Like, they
- 18:50Speaker 5: got what they got and then ran out a few
- 18:52Speaker 5: years later.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Like, fuck that. Give me the money.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I ain't talking unless you giving me land.
- 19:00Speaker 6: Buy me lands but just to you know shoot some
- 19:03Speaker 6: bail to you know john's parents right like that is
- 19:08Speaker 6: that craziness is absolutely the result of trauma right yes
- 19:12Speaker 6: and just kind of 100 right but like just bringing
- 19:15Speaker 6: it back to real life like i remember uh again
- 19:18Speaker 6: i'm raised in like middle class mostly white neighborhoods right
- 19:22Speaker 6: but i remember the day that We came home from
- 19:26Speaker 6: school and we're talking to this white girl that got
- 19:28Speaker 6: off a school bus that went to school with my
- 19:30Speaker 6: cousin and my grandmother just like peeking through the window
- 19:34Speaker 6: and then like proceeds to give us an hour long
- 19:36Speaker 6: lecture at like full volume, just screaming at us. Don't
- 19:40Speaker 6: be talking to them white girls. Next thing you know,
- 19:43Speaker 6: they're going to claim you raped them and dah, dah, dah, dah.
- 19:45Speaker 5: Right.
- 19:46Speaker 6: And like, to me, that sounded crazy. I'm like, you're
- 19:48Speaker 6: raising us with these people. We go to school with
- 19:50Speaker 6: these people. We can't talk like this is stupid. This
- 19:53Speaker 6: is crazy. And then, you know, some years later, I
- 19:57Speaker 6: get the story of how the clan burned down my
- 20:00Speaker 6: grandmother's high school.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Allegedly. They still have not proven it was the clan.
- 20:04Speaker 4: It was the clan.
- 20:05Speaker 6: Right.
- 20:06Speaker 4: But I'm like, that's the type of.
- 20:09Speaker 6: Response that you get out of a traumatic incident like that.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Like we're going to protect these boys at all costs.
- 20:16Speaker 6: And absolutely. You're going to be a lawyer. You don't
- 20:19Speaker 6: have a choice. When you go to college, you're going
- 20:21Speaker 6: to get major in this. It was not even like, Oh, go,
- 20:24Speaker 6: go find yourself.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Nah, you're going to major in one of these three subjects,
- 20:28Speaker 4: you know, go get you a good government job. Like
- 20:31Speaker 4: that is absolutely the path that they would set.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:34Speaker 4: And so I, would imagine that if my grandmother were
- 20:38Speaker 4: visited by a blue space alien and was like, hey,
- 20:40Speaker 4: he could be a superhero one day. It's like, oh,
- 20:42Speaker 4: you're absolutely going to be a superhero. You were chosen. Yeah. Like,
- 20:47Speaker 4: that's it.
- 20:47Speaker 5: You have to have the audacity to believe that, right? Like,
- 20:50Speaker 5: because what the fuck else? It showed up to you.
- 20:53Speaker 5: I think all of us have similar or different... Varying
- 20:57Speaker 5: experience to the craziness and the trauma that gets passed
- 21:01Speaker 5: down to us from the people who are raising us.
- 21:03Speaker 5: I'm growing up in New York and I could never,
- 21:07Speaker 5: me and my brothers could never use, and this is
- 21:09Speaker 5: like a more mild example, we can never use anything
- 21:12Speaker 5: that resembled a gun. And we're talking about Nerf guns,
- 21:15Speaker 5: water guns.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 21:17Speaker 5: Air, like anything that it could be neon colored, you know, orange.
- 21:22Speaker 5: It doesn't matter because, and my mom, you, and she
- 21:25Speaker 5: literally said, and what you said touched a nerve on me.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Cause my mom said, y'all cannot play like how they play.
- 21:30Speaker 5: And she said, I remember those words very vividly. And
- 21:33Speaker 5: obviously it wasn't until I was older. I really understood
- 21:35Speaker 5: what she meant by that. Y'all cannot play with the
- 21:37Speaker 5: things that they play with. Y'all cannot do the things
- 21:38Speaker 5: that they play with. OK, because we're talking like the
- 21:40Speaker 5: 90s when like even though it's been happening since forever,
- 21:43Speaker 5: that was when it started getting televised more and more
- 21:46Speaker 5: about police shootings, about this and that, about the kid
- 21:48Speaker 5: was playing and was targeted, things like that. So I
- 21:53Speaker 5: hear you what you're saying, BJ, about the craziness being
- 21:56Speaker 5: kind of. imbued in the experience, right? Like, and I'm
- 22:00Speaker 5: using craziness as a euphemism. They're not literally out of
- 22:03Speaker 5: their mind, but some out of their mind shit had
- 22:05Speaker 5: to happen for them to react that way, right?
- 22:08Speaker 1: It's like the saying, you know, you're not paranoid when
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know what's up against you. And, you know, they
- 22:14Speaker 1: are someone, they are two Black people who have experienced
- 22:17Speaker 1: America their whole lives and have been downtrodden, et cetera.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And when some, you know, blue alien, like you said,
- 22:24Speaker 1: comes along and says, This is your way out. You know,
- 22:27Speaker 1: it's like your kid could be LeBron James, you know. Well,
- 22:30Speaker 1: then I'm going to put this man on the basketball
- 22:32Speaker 1: court every goddamn day until he turns into LeBron James
- 22:35Speaker 1: or something. You know, they showed up right now. That's
- 22:37Speaker 1: what's going to happen now. There's a couple of things
- 22:39Speaker 1: I do want to touch on and we're going to
- 22:40Speaker 1: get into so many things. But one thing I do
- 22:43Speaker 1: want to say is like because there's already people are
- 22:46Speaker 1: enraged that the idea that Hal isn't, you know, like
- 22:50Speaker 1: he only got the ring because of white privilege. And
- 22:52Speaker 1: that's not what the show is saying. That's not the
- 22:55Speaker 1: case at all. Like, Hal is, you know, the most willful, everything.
- 22:59Speaker 1: He is all those things. Like, we see in the
- 23:01Speaker 1: preview for next week, Sinestro says, oh, he's just like you, basically.
- 23:05Speaker 1: He gonna be arrogant. He gonna be all these things.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Because he is. Hal is a great Green Lantern. He's deserving. But...
- 23:14Speaker 1: White privilege allows him to not grow with fear. And
- 23:17Speaker 1: this is something that really struck me in the episode.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And I talked about this on the recap that I
- 23:22Speaker 1: did last night. When halfway through the episode, I'm like, yo,
- 23:28Speaker 1: do I fucking live in fear? you know, as a
- 23:31Speaker 1: black man in America and as someone who has traveled
- 23:34Speaker 1: to other places, I say, yes, like I've been in
- 23:39Speaker 1: Ethiopia and lived there for months at a time where
- 23:43Speaker 1: I did not feel the way I feel on a
- 23:45Speaker 1: daily basis in America. And I don't think it's, possible
- 23:49Speaker 1: for people who aren't black people or of color you
- 23:53Speaker 1: know or really black people i'll say i don't know
- 23:56Speaker 1: you know because i only know the black experience to
- 23:58Speaker 1: even understand this and as we were doing the when
- 24:01Speaker 1: i did the post this morning and i was watching
- 24:04Speaker 1: the chat from the recap last night someone said this
- 24:08Speaker 1: episode was over exaggerated and i talked about this recently
- 24:12Speaker 1: how i read a study about how racism is so
- 24:15Speaker 1: ingrained in us that we don't even get to accept
- 24:18Speaker 1: you know, or understand the levels of it. But just
- 24:21Speaker 1: a quick story, because everyone's telling their stories today. I
- 24:24Speaker 1: grew up in Houston, Texas, right? And I went to
- 24:26Speaker 1: an elementary school, then a middle school. And then I
- 24:29Speaker 1: was supposed to go to this high school. Like everyone,
- 24:32Speaker 1: all my classmates, you know, you go to one school,
- 24:33Speaker 1: the next, you know, but I went to a different
- 24:36Speaker 1: high school. But while my friends were at that high school,
- 24:39Speaker 1: when I was in like junior year at Lamar High School,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you can look this up. These white boys came to
- 24:45Speaker 1: school one day wearing shirts that said if the South
- 24:48Speaker 1: had won the war, we wouldn't be in this mess. Obviously,
- 24:51Speaker 1: a fight broke out. It turns into a race riot
- 24:55Speaker 1: at the school and the school gets shut down for,
- 24:58Speaker 1: I think, a week. You know, it was crazy.
- 25:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Like, you know, maybe a week, two weeks. I'm not
- 25:04Speaker 1: sure how long it got shut down. You can look
- 25:05Speaker 1: it up. Lamar High School, you know, just the other
- 25:08Speaker 1: day there was a. fight in Florida, like a boxing match, UFC, something.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It was some crazy shit with this Jewish dude versus
- 25:17Speaker 1: a professed Nazi. But people are in the stands waving
- 25:21Speaker 1: Nazi flags and stuff. This is America, Orlando, Florida. The
- 25:25Speaker 1: other day in 2026. Like, this is like, Also, when
- 25:28Speaker 1: I grew up, they once dragged a black man behind
- 25:32Speaker 1: a truck. This is, I think, in Waco, Texas.
- 25:36Speaker 4: In Jasper?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Jasper. There was Jasper. Yep, yep. You already know. Like,
- 25:40Speaker 1: this is, you know, I'm distrusted when people sit there
- 25:45Speaker 1: and tell me that race isn't involved in everything, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 1: and that we live in this, like, post-racial society or
- 25:53Speaker 1: some bullshit like that. It is just, you know, it's ridiculous.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I was... a commenter was sitting there talking about, oh,
- 25:59Speaker 1: you know, I have to take issue with some of
- 26:01Speaker 1: the stuff you said when, you know, you talk about
- 26:03Speaker 1: how race isn't involved and everything. I'm just like, yo, man,
- 26:05Speaker 1: I don't have time for that because it is. The
- 26:07Speaker 1: very fact that we're sitting here discussing black versus white
- 26:11Speaker 1: versus any other race is a construct of toxic whiteness.
- 26:15Speaker 1: You know, everything is part of this system. And so
- 26:19Speaker 1: when you see shows like this that are bearing witness
- 26:22Speaker 1: to this and people are getting upset and be like,
- 26:25Speaker 1: it's over-exaggerated, It's ridiculous to me and it's honestly insulting.
- 26:29Speaker 5: Not only is it ridiculous, it's just like, of course
- 26:32Speaker 5: you're going to react that way because you don't want
- 26:33Speaker 5: to see it.
- 26:34Speaker 2: You guys reacted this way with Watchmen.
- 26:35Speaker 5: You guys reacted this way with every fucking comic known
- 26:38Speaker 5: to man that's ever been made into a live action anything.
- 26:41Speaker 5: You always have a fucking problem like, oh, why race,
- 26:44Speaker 5: why race, why race?
- 26:44Speaker 2: It is ingrained. There is no getting away from it.
- 26:48Speaker 5: And until you understand that, until you accept that fact,
- 26:51Speaker 5: you will always have the same tired response anytime anyone
- 26:55Speaker 5: says black. anywhere and my name says white anywhere you're
- 26:59Speaker 5: gonna always be upset unless you're one of the guardians
- 27:02Speaker 5: you have no right to one be upset by it
- 27:05Speaker 5: two you are living in it you are living in
- 27:08Speaker 5: the results of toxic whiteness right because I'm trying not
- 27:14Speaker 5: to say white supremacy, toxic whiteness, right?
- 27:16Speaker 2: You're living in the result of it.
- 27:17Speaker 5: You are bathing in the glow and basking in the
- 27:21Speaker 5: spoils of that war, right? Or the continuous war of that.
- 27:24Speaker 5: So I really don't want to hear that, right? And
- 27:28Speaker 5: I will say that again, I don't know the makeup
- 27:29Speaker 5: of the person who said that comment, Ben, about it's
- 27:33Speaker 5: exaggerated or whatever. One thing that I can understand, particularly
- 27:37Speaker 5: how it affected us, how we kept saying damn Bernadette,
- 27:40Speaker 5: is because for me, as I thought about it, it's like,
- 27:43Speaker 5: a physical and very literal manifestation of all of the
- 27:48Speaker 5: lessons that our parents have taught us. No, nobody put
- 27:52Speaker 5: an apple on my head and shot at me like
- 27:53Speaker 5: I was William Tell, but the depths and the levels
- 27:56Speaker 5: of the lessons and the things that were done to
- 27:58Speaker 5: protect me, to give me a way of life from
- 28:01Speaker 5: my family, from my people, was that extreme.
- 28:03Speaker 2: When you really think about it, it really was extreme.
- 28:06Speaker 5: I said it was a mild case of, oh, I
- 28:07Speaker 5: can't play with toy guns or whatever.
- 28:09Speaker 2: That's actually really extreme.
- 28:10Speaker 5: That means from now to forever to the point where
- 28:13Speaker 5: when you're older, you can never even touch it or
- 28:14Speaker 5: go anywhere near it, right? Like, You can't talk a
- 28:18Speaker 5: certain way. You can't be a certain way. That is
- 28:21Speaker 5: an extreme. That changes the literal makeup of who you
- 28:24Speaker 5: are as a person, of how you feel you can
- 28:26Speaker 5: move in this world. And again, no, it's not all
- 28:30Speaker 5: that shit that they want to do, the stuff that
- 28:33Speaker 5: we're referring to as crazy, but it is that deep.
- 28:36Speaker 5: And I, that's the part that people really don't understand
- 28:39Speaker 5: or don't want to understand for various reasons. And it's
- 28:42Speaker 5: mostly mainly because they don't want to remove the veil.
- 28:45Speaker 5: They don't want to remove the, the world that gives
- 28:48Speaker 5: them the privilege that they have.
- 28:49Speaker 2: It's just like, Oh, you guys are over exaggerating.
- 28:52Speaker 5: Meanwhile, we're getting killed the same ways we was getting
- 28:55Speaker 5: killed for the last 400 years.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Real quick, because you asked about the makeup and because
- 29:02Speaker 1: the title of this episode is outcast. Big Rube, one
- 29:06Speaker 1: of the Outkast Dungeon family who drops the poems on
- 29:09Speaker 1: Outkast albums, once said, you know, if you think that
- 29:13Speaker 1: an Outkast album is all about pimping hoes and slamming
- 29:16Speaker 1: cattle at does, then you're a cracker or someone who
- 29:19Speaker 1: thinks that they're a cracker. And that's what I always say.
- 29:22Speaker 1: It's a lot of people, you know, regardless of skin color,
- 29:24Speaker 1: who think that they're a cracker, who think that they
- 29:26Speaker 1: can exist in this system and, you know, remain centrist,
- 29:31Speaker 1: which I feel weak as fuck. and think that they
- 29:34Speaker 1: can just live their life and like, oh, I don't
- 29:36Speaker 1: want to talk about race and all that shit. But
- 29:37Speaker 1: you know when you in the game you know the
- 29:40Speaker 1: game is gonna play you whether or not you play
- 29:42Speaker 1: or not so.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Yeah yeah I just like when I my two cents
- 29:47Speaker 3: is that like what I'm hearing is that White supremacy,
- 29:51Speaker 3: toxic whiteness, whatever, it's all layers of protecting the capitalist
- 29:55Speaker 3: system as it is. The way that it is all functioning,
- 30:00Speaker 3: the capital that it was originally built off of is
- 30:02Speaker 3: human capital. Those bodies were Black bodies, and we are
- 30:07Speaker 3: living with those ramifications to this day. I feel like
- 30:10Speaker 3: what I'm hearing whenever people bring up certain things like,
- 30:12Speaker 3: this like assimilationist like thoughts or like this like post-racial
- 30:17Speaker 3: fantasy stuff it's like they're trying to speak it into
- 30:19Speaker 3: being as if speaking it will make it so and
- 30:22Speaker 3: that just is never going to work it never has
- 30:24Speaker 3: worked and it's not going to work because the system
- 30:27Speaker 3: is built the way it's built for the same reasons
- 30:30Speaker 3: to keep it uphill to keep the status quo going
- 30:33Speaker 3: as it has been going for centuries And so when
- 30:37Speaker 3: you're saying like, oh, it's overdone, like I hear so
- 30:40Speaker 3: many things from that. Like one for I'm hearing, how
- 30:45Speaker 3: dare you? And this franchise that is capitalist, which is
- 30:51Speaker 3: making money off of all these things, which is like
- 30:55Speaker 3: upheld in Hollywood, one of the biggest like industries and
- 30:59Speaker 3: ecosystems there is to make money. How dare you confront
- 31:03Speaker 3: me with this concept that I have put as something
- 31:08Speaker 3: that is separate from being consulted or made into anything
- 31:14Speaker 3: that would change my worldview and perspective. Because what I
- 31:17Speaker 3: know about this system is that it upholds what's always
- 31:19Speaker 3: been going on. Why would you confront me now with
- 31:22Speaker 3: something that I've been told that I'm never going to
- 31:25Speaker 3: come into this because it doesn't make money? Oh, so
- 31:28Speaker 3: I can understand. And now I can understand too. If
- 31:30Speaker 3: people feel a way... Because there's real valid reasons to
- 31:33Speaker 3: feel a way about Watchmen... and like any like guardians
- 31:38Speaker 3: or like black panther or whatever making money talking about
- 31:41Speaker 3: black stories and not like if they don't actually do
- 31:45Speaker 3: anything they don't actually raise money for black folks they
- 31:47Speaker 3: don't actually do like i could understand that kind of
- 31:50Speaker 3: ire towards like you're using my pain on screen but
- 31:53Speaker 3: you're not doing anything about it if like they show
- 31:55Speaker 3: the tulsa massacre and they don't do anything to uphold
- 31:59Speaker 3: you know to help tulsa out like that's there's levels
- 32:01Speaker 3: to that that i can understand right but that's a
- 32:03Speaker 3: whole different perspective than what you're presenting of like, you're
- 32:06Speaker 3: overdoing it. Like, so Franken stories, like from growing up
- 32:10Speaker 3: in Tennessee, very whites surrounded existence. There were, and I
- 32:14Speaker 3: was one of those AP honor kids. So I would
- 32:17Speaker 3: be in very white classrooms, a lot of my education.
- 32:21Speaker 3: And those were kids that were like, they questioned authority
- 32:25Speaker 3: all the time. They talked crazy to the teachers all
- 32:27Speaker 3: the fucking time. And I never did. Cause that never would,
- 32:32Speaker 3: come to my head. That was not how I was raised.
- 32:34Speaker 3: That was not my thing. And there were so many
- 32:37Speaker 3: times where it's like, slavery might come up. And we're
- 32:44Speaker 3: in history class. And suddenly, it's a question of like,
- 32:49Speaker 3: one time this kid in AP history, which was like,
- 32:51Speaker 3: of all the APs, was my best performing AP. This
- 32:55Speaker 3: guy asked, well, why didn't they leave? If... Slavery was
- 33:02Speaker 3: a choice. Slavery was a choice.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Why didn't they just leave?
- 33:07Speaker 3: And there have been times like Washington Watchmen where I
- 33:11Speaker 3: have had moments where I'm like, I wonder if this
- 33:13Speaker 3: will even come across that guy's radar. Because the Twitter
- 33:17Speaker 3: discussions that happened when people were like, oh... This is
- 33:21Speaker 3: the first time I've ever been confronted with the idea
- 33:23Speaker 3: that this actually happened in real life. I had no
- 33:26Speaker 3: idea that this was real. Mind you, these are stories,
- 33:30Speaker 3: like when Brenda's talking about the guy who got dragged
- 33:34Speaker 3: in Texas, I grew up hearing that story down South
- 33:37Speaker 3: being Black. And I'm not from Texas. I'm from a
- 33:40Speaker 3: whole other part of the South, but I'm getting that story.
- 33:43Speaker 3: I'm hearing stories from all over the South about Black
- 33:45Speaker 3: folks and all the people getting bombs on their portraits
- 33:47Speaker 3: and stuff like that into the 90s, into the 1000s.
- 33:50Speaker 3: And so I, it boggles my mind. Like, that's the
- 33:56Speaker 3: privilege of like, you're living your life in the same region,
- 34:01Speaker 3: the same small, in the same towns. And you're not
- 34:03Speaker 3: hearing these stories because y'all are being taught that I
- 34:06Speaker 3: got nothing to do with you. It's like, that's just
- 34:09Speaker 3: part of some, that's some story. That's some fantasy. That's
- 34:11Speaker 3: not real. Don't have any evidence. Who even knows if
- 34:13Speaker 3: that's true. At the same time, you have like Nana
- 34:17Speaker 3: and Papa with like relics with, like, postcards of lynchings
- 34:21Speaker 3: and stuff, and they're freaking addict. But at the same time,
- 34:24Speaker 3: this ain't true. People are over-exaggerating. And that's what pisses
- 34:27Speaker 3: me off about hearing over-exaggerating. And at the same time,
- 34:31Speaker 3: talking about my high school experience, where there are Black
- 34:34Speaker 3: folks that were like, we're going to just get along
- 34:36Speaker 3: for the get-along. I'm not going to say too much
- 34:37Speaker 3: about nothing. I'm going to put my head down.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:42Speaker 3: I'm going to say, yeah, people are over-exaggerating. Not me,
- 34:46Speaker 3: but I've heard people who would be like, oh, yeah,
- 34:47Speaker 3: they're over-exaggerating. Or, oh, they're making too much of it.
- 34:52Speaker 2: It's always us that's over-exaggerating.
- 34:54Speaker 5: Nobody else, everyone else's stuff that they went through is plausible,
- 34:58Speaker 5: but me, no way.
- 34:59Speaker 2: No.
- 34:59Speaker 1: No way.
- 35:00Speaker 5: Because Black people don't feel pain, right? Like, we can
- 35:03Speaker 5: get surgery without anesthesia. They can give us syphilis and
- 35:06Speaker 5: just watch the effects of it. Like, Black people don't
- 35:08Speaker 5: feel pain. So, like, of course they're over-exaggerating. They just
- 35:11Speaker 5: want sympathy, but they don't even actually feel anything.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Yes, wow.
- 35:15Speaker 6: I think this is kind of a cause... to mine,
- 35:18Speaker 6: just the importance of representation in media. Because we're having
- 35:22Speaker 6: this conversation about what we perceive as very individualized experiences
- 35:27Speaker 6: and realizing this is a very much collective experience. We
- 35:31Speaker 6: can keep going with stories for days. And all of
- 35:35Speaker 6: my stories are personal to me. But to see some
- 35:40Speaker 6: of this dialogue being sparked on HBO at 9 p.m.
- 35:44Speaker 4: On a Sunday, it's like, oh, that's validating. Like I
- 35:48Speaker 4: wasn't tripping this whole time.
- 35:50Speaker 6: Like there's, I mean, this conversation is doing a lot
- 35:55Speaker 6: for me and I guess we'll get back to lanterns
- 35:56Speaker 6: at some point.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:58Speaker 6: But like my wife, like there's a 10 year gap
- 36:03Speaker 6: between my first and second children. And in that gap
- 36:08Speaker 6: is a bunch of miscarriages, but also a bunch of
- 36:12Speaker 6: trips to an OBGYN and who like refused to test
- 36:16Speaker 6: my wife for PCOS because it was like, well, you
- 36:20Speaker 6: already had a kid. You're fine. Come to find out
- 36:24Speaker 6: 10 years later, she did have PCOS. Not only does
- 36:27Speaker 6: she have PCOS, she had one of the worst cases
- 36:30Speaker 6: that her current practice had ever seen. And it's just like, perhaps,
- 36:38Speaker 6: perhaps a white woman would have gotten the test. Like
- 36:40Speaker 6: what could have, how much heartache would we have saved?
- 36:45Speaker 6: just if someone listened to her, right? Like it is,
- 36:50Speaker 6: it is infuriating to think back on. And it's like,
- 36:56Speaker 6: I absolutely see just to bring this back, how you
- 36:59Speaker 6: grow up like Jon Stewart Jr.
- 37:03Speaker 4: Did.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:05Speaker 4: And it's like, all right, they might be able to
- 37:07Speaker 4: weaponize just about anything.
- 37:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 4: They're not going to cause me to fear.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Hmm. And that's something else I want to touch on,
- 37:18Speaker 1: especially when we talk about John Jr. growing up, because
- 37:20Speaker 1: I feel like I know all of us can relate
- 37:22Speaker 1: to this in one way or the other, is when
- 37:25Speaker 1: he's reciting the Outkast lyrics and his brother says, you
- 37:30Speaker 1: sound like a white boy named Henry. And I think
- 37:36Speaker 1: his other brother even says he's not black. And I'll
- 37:39Speaker 1: tell you another story in high school. I'll never forget
- 37:42Speaker 1: a friend of mine now. I won't name his name
- 37:44Speaker 1: because I don't want to call him out. Yeah, it's
- 37:45Speaker 1: my people's now. But I remember I said something, and
- 37:48Speaker 1: he was like, you're not black, are you, Ben?
- 37:51Speaker 2: Sorry for laughing.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 37:53Speaker 2: That's wild.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 2: That's super fucking wild.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Super fucking wild. But this is like, You know, so
- 38:01Speaker 1: that episode, you know, I mean, this episode hit me
- 38:03Speaker 1: in so many ways. But that one truly hit me
- 38:06Speaker 1: because at one point I was considered not black by,
- 38:09Speaker 1: you know, people. And like the most hilarious thing about
- 38:13Speaker 1: it is this Negro is high yellow to the goddamn sun.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Like my man is pale. You know what I mean?
- 38:22Speaker 1: And he's over here calling me not black. And this
- 38:25Speaker 1: is my brother. You know, like I said, I ain't
- 38:27Speaker 1: gonna name no names.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Was you pronouncing the E.R. 's and the I.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Wasn't pronouncing the E.R. 's, but I was definitely like,
- 38:34Speaker 1: you know, I was raised in a very black hood.
- 38:37Speaker 1: I grew up a dumb nerd, you know, and a
- 38:39Speaker 1: dumb theater kid, you know, so I didn't have an accent.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I didn't have a lot of things like that. I
- 38:44Speaker 1: was very much, you know, I could like I've told
- 38:47Speaker 1: I could not snap on beat. I was a rhythmless
- 38:50Speaker 1: black boy. It was bad. You know what I mean?
- 38:53Speaker 1: So I couldn't play basketball. There was a lot of things. Like,
- 38:57Speaker 1: I just did not, you know, have to. You didn't
- 39:00Speaker 1: fit the profile. I didn't fit the profile, you know,
- 39:02Speaker 1: except when the police saw me. Hey, that's another great story.
- 39:07Speaker 1: One day I was walking down the street. One night
- 39:08Speaker 1: I was walking down the street with a bunch of
- 39:10Speaker 1: my white friends. All of us. It's like eight, nine
- 39:12Speaker 1: of these white boys. We're in high school at this point.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Walking down the block. Cop pulls up, hops out the car,
- 39:18Speaker 1: shines the light on us and says, is this guy
- 39:21Speaker 1: bothering y'all?
- 39:24Speaker 2: I get not fucking funny, but what?
- 39:27Speaker 3: I just heard a story like that like yesterday.
- 39:30Speaker 1: This is true story. This Houston text, and we were
- 39:32Speaker 1: walking from my man Zev's house to my brother Marcus' house.
- 39:35Speaker 1: These are my peoples of the day. Zev and Marcus,
- 39:37Speaker 1: I'm tight with to this day. You know what I mean?
- 39:40Speaker 1: cop it was like eight nine.
- 39:42Speaker 5: Of us right i have to laugh because it's just
- 39:44Speaker 5: so incredulous like i know it's real.
- 39:46Speaker 1: I just said is he bothering y'all.
- 39:48Speaker 5: There's literally been like snl skits about this and it's
- 39:51Speaker 5: just like.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And that's like again when we were going back to
- 39:54Speaker 1: this whole you know and like we talk about that
- 39:57Speaker 1: and how john was raised and then the other thing
- 40:00Speaker 1: that a big part of this episode you know we
- 40:02Speaker 1: talk about the fear but it's also love versus fear
- 40:07Speaker 1: you know, and how his mom brings up and she says,
- 40:10Speaker 1: that's the most, you know, powerful thing we have.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:13Speaker 1: And so it's, you know, like the line that everybody
- 40:17Speaker 1: is quoting is courage is fear that said it's prayers. I,
- 40:22Speaker 1: you know.
- 40:23Speaker 5: I want to just touch on that love topic because
- 40:26Speaker 5: that was a bit scary to me.
- 40:28Speaker 2: It was love.
- 40:28Speaker 5: And there's a lot of other things when little John,
- 40:30Speaker 5: when little John said, what?
- 40:37Speaker 1: I think it was saying, what for real? They brought
- 40:42Speaker 1: out that costume. That man said, what?
- 40:46Speaker 4: That man wanted crayons.
- 40:54Speaker 5: When young John was having a conversation with his mother
- 40:56Speaker 5: late night or early morning, I couldn't tell what it
- 40:57Speaker 5: was when she was in the nightgown. And, you know,
- 41:00Speaker 5: they were talking about, you know, she was having that line,
- 41:02Speaker 5: that line you just said, that now famous line. And
- 41:05Speaker 5: she was like, well, you know, we could do the
- 41:06Speaker 5: shooting the head, the apple of the head. And he
- 41:08Speaker 5: was like, no, I want you. I was just like, oh,
- 41:12Speaker 5: that's a deep love and that's.
- 41:14Speaker 1: A deep fear. Man said you should have given me
- 41:16Speaker 1: them goddamn crayons.
- 41:21Speaker 5: Like a tinge of fear entered my heart when he
- 41:24Speaker 5: said that because i understood why particularly how he had
- 41:28Speaker 5: been conditioned from his parents since he was an infant
- 41:32Speaker 5: essentially or five years old um you know when they
- 41:34Speaker 5: told him you're gonna go out in the world be
- 41:36Speaker 5: a pokemon trainer but Again, when we talk about how
- 41:39Speaker 5: that trauma affects you, right?
- 41:42Speaker 2: You as the person you're growing up.
- 41:44Speaker 5: For him at, what was he, eight or nine years
- 41:46Speaker 5: old at that point to say that? And to understand
- 41:49Speaker 5: the implications of what he was doing. That's the other part. Like,
- 41:52Speaker 5: as a child, you just don't understand the implications of
- 41:55Speaker 5: the things you do and say.
- 41:56Speaker 2: Like, it's just not all the way there. Sometimes you do.
- 41:58Speaker 5: But there are times when you're so conditioned or you're so...
- 42:02Speaker 5: raised or nurtured or not nurtured in certain environments that
- 42:07Speaker 5: you start grasping the concepts, the high, high level concepts
- 42:10Speaker 5: that probably would never come until like a decade later.
- 42:13Speaker 5: And that's also particularly what I found scary that he
- 42:16Speaker 5: grasped the gravity of what was happening and what was
- 42:20Speaker 5: going on and what was at stake. And to be
- 42:24Speaker 5: a child that young to have to have that, to
- 42:26Speaker 5: have that weight on you, you know, like innocence lost
- 42:29Speaker 5: you know your childhood you don't really have a child
- 42:31Speaker 5: understand like and just again just to bring it all
- 42:34Speaker 5: back to to lanterns and how this is so like
- 42:37Speaker 5: you have all this stuff when the guardian was questioning
- 42:40Speaker 5: him like you know do you feel a way about
- 42:41Speaker 5: your peoples for doing that to you he was just
- 42:44Speaker 5: like nah but do you feel a way about how
- 42:47Speaker 5: i think he was.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Lying bro got it had to be lying I feel.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Like it's interesting, though, because I feel like... So one
- 42:56Speaker 3: thing I wanted to note is that there is this
- 42:58Speaker 3: discussion that I've seen on TikTok about how parents decided
- 43:01Speaker 3: they wanted to take their kids and homeschool them, but
- 43:04Speaker 3: it's not because of any specific.
- 43:07Speaker 3: They don't have good reasoning behind being homeschooling their kids.
- 43:12Speaker 3: It's just on some like, well, all this is happening
- 43:14Speaker 3: at the school and I don't feel like doing all this. Yeah.
- 43:16Speaker 2: So I'm going to control.
- 43:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:18Speaker 3: Yeah. So, but then people being like, okay, but what
- 43:21Speaker 3: do you know about teaching? Like you'll be talking about
- 43:23Speaker 3: taking your kids out of school, but who's teaching your kid?
- 43:27Speaker 1: You don't even have trouble.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Doing their homework with them. So who, how are you
- 43:31Speaker 3: teaching them what they need to know in homeschool? Lo
- 43:34Speaker 3: and behold, They're keeping John Jr.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Out of school.
- 43:38Speaker 3: His mother's a whole teacher. She has him homeschooled. The
- 43:41Speaker 3: other kids are going to school. So this idea, like
- 43:44Speaker 3: we were talking about like us and our experiences going
- 43:47Speaker 3: through school or whatever, like this is all in the
- 43:50Speaker 3: conditioning of not having him go in life without fear.
- 43:54Speaker 3: So his interpersonal relationships with his brothers, with his parents,
- 43:58Speaker 3: even like that suffers because he's too built on not
- 44:02Speaker 3: having fear. So of course, whenever he's, Processing like, oh,
- 44:06Speaker 3: I was afraid to shoot my father. He's not afraid
- 44:10Speaker 3: to shoot after Bernadette because the relationship she's built with
- 44:16Speaker 3: him is completely conditioned for him to look at her
- 44:20Speaker 3: a different way. And then, of course, right after she
- 44:23Speaker 3: admits to lying to him, that's when he has the
- 44:27Speaker 3: ability to be like, my whole full 10-year-old self is
- 44:29Speaker 3: ready to do something now. about an apple off of
- 44:32Speaker 3: a parent's head, and it's your head, because now I
- 44:35Speaker 3: don't see you as this person that is, like, on
- 44:39Speaker 3: a pedestal in the way that, like, I've built up of, like,
- 44:42Speaker 3: not having, because, like, that's one thing parents, like, I've
- 44:44Speaker 3: talked about this in another episode, where it's really weird
- 44:47Speaker 3: growing up with, like, as a Black child, where your
- 44:49Speaker 3: parents are, like, They kind of instill a level of like,
- 44:52Speaker 3: you need to have fear for the world because there
- 44:54Speaker 3: are things that are going to happen to you. And
- 44:56Speaker 3: also like try to translate that fear through themselves, like
- 44:58Speaker 3: giving you punishments, like those kinds of things. But at
- 45:01Speaker 3: the same time, pushing you to not fear in some ways.
- 45:05Speaker 3: And it's like this weird dichotomy. And it's like, how
- 45:07Speaker 3: does that make sense? I don't know how to, like,
- 45:08Speaker 3: it's really hard to make sense of it. But here's
- 45:11Speaker 3: Junior being told his whole life to not fear. When
- 45:14Speaker 3: he's in the car, his brothers say, are you going
- 45:16Speaker 3: to always be afraid of them? And that's, again, another,
- 45:20Speaker 3: just like, he's afraid of his parents. So in that
- 45:24Speaker 3: moment where he's like, It's you. I can shoot the
- 45:27Speaker 3: apple off of you. That, like, I can tell.
- 45:31Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Like, you can tell Bernadette is, like, taking it back.
- 45:34Speaker 3: And it's interesting because I, for a minute, whenever she's
- 45:37Speaker 3: sitting out there with the apple on her head, I
- 45:39Speaker 3: could have sworn she was, like, there were tears coming out.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Of her eyes.
- 45:41Speaker 3: She was angry.
- 45:42Speaker 5: Yes.
- 45:43Speaker 2: She was scared.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Yeah, she was scared.
- 45:45Speaker 3: And he did not blink.
- 45:48Speaker 2: He shot that apple off her head.
- 45:50Speaker 3: So his father was standing there quietly, not having any
- 45:55Speaker 3: major emotions showing. But when his mom is there shaking, crying,
- 45:59Speaker 3: he's ready to take the apple. So it's just an
- 46:01Speaker 3: interesting difference in what he's... He's trained to be a sniper.
- 46:06Speaker 3: We see him... I called it his lion's mane. Like
- 46:10Speaker 3: by the time he has like been sitting there for
- 46:12Speaker 3: nine months and he's like, he looks like Mufasa, like it's,
- 46:15Speaker 3: and he's like ready to shoot. That's Mufasa. That's what
- 46:21Speaker 3: I felt like when I saw him in that like
- 46:23Speaker 3: little crouch, I was like, okay, he's Mufasa-ing, but he's
- 46:26Speaker 3: able to Mufasa it to, and to that extent, because
- 46:30Speaker 3: he's his greatest fear is, was conquered at 10 years old.
- 46:34Speaker 3: A shaking, crying, emotional mom that he's never seen before.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Like it's, that was a lot to get over. And like,
- 46:42Speaker 3: what is that? Like five seconds of shooting? Like that's
- 46:44Speaker 3: a lot.
- 46:44Speaker 6: That's like when Antoine Fisher was like, nah, you're not.
- 46:47Speaker 4: Beating me no more.
- 46:49Speaker 6: But like, can you imagine going through that, right? Conquering fear,
- 46:57Speaker 6: sitting and waiting for a target for nine months and
- 47:01Speaker 6: And this space white man just comes and steals your moment.
- 47:04Speaker 3: That's a bubble around your target while you're ready to
- 47:08Speaker 3: let that trigger go.
- 47:09Speaker 2: When I saw that scene, I said, this is the
- 47:11Speaker 2: privilege right there!
- 47:13Speaker 3: Right there!
- 47:14Speaker 5: This episode formalized and legitimized and made everything, all the
- 47:19Speaker 5: stuff that people think we're making fun of, or the
- 47:21Speaker 5: things people think we're exaggerating about, rather. The things people say, oh,
- 47:25Speaker 5: it's not that bad or that. This episode literally made
- 47:29Speaker 5: it real.
- 47:29Speaker 4: Look!
- 47:30Speaker 2: This is a physical manifestation of what the fuck happens.
- 47:33Speaker 3: The privilege, though, too, is that he found out about
- 47:35Speaker 3: this from being at a strip club. It wasn't like
- 47:38Speaker 3: he was part of the defense team. There was no
- 47:41Speaker 3: strategy or nothing like that. That's the ultimate form of privilege.
- 47:44Speaker 3: I can get top military intel from just being at
- 47:47Speaker 3: a strip club and then deciding that I'm going to
- 47:49Speaker 3: do something about it. And then what are they going
- 47:51Speaker 3: to do? Even the guardian was like, we told him
- 47:52Speaker 3: not to do it, but I guess he's going to
- 47:54Speaker 3: find his replacement now. No ramifications, nothing directly, just a
- 47:57Speaker 3: slap on the wrist. If he were a Black man, though...
- 48:01Speaker 3: It was nothing special about it.
- 48:02Speaker 1: No, the Black man did suffer.
- 48:03Speaker 2: But the Black man did suffer.
- 48:04Speaker 1: He did suffer. It's not even if he does suffer.
- 48:07Speaker 1: He gets dishonorably discharged for Hal's actions.
- 48:11Speaker 6: He gets dishonorably discharged for following the orders he was given.
- 48:14Speaker 1: For following the orders.
- 48:16Speaker 5: And, Ben, it really likened me to what you just
- 48:18Speaker 5: said about the whole getting pulled over or getting stopped
- 48:21Speaker 5: by the police and you're the one to ask, what
- 48:22Speaker 5: did you do? Like, he had nothing to do with this.
- 48:25Speaker 5: He was collateral damage and took the fall.
- 48:28Speaker 3: Just like the acres of land that the Russians are
- 48:30Speaker 3: mad about.
- 48:31Speaker 1: That.
- 48:31Speaker 3: 300 acres is nothing to think about.
- 48:32Speaker 2: The land was more important than John.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 48:36Speaker 5: And even when we talk about the privilege again, Hal's
- 48:39Speaker 5: privileged walking into their home. And, you know, not to
- 48:41Speaker 5: say like he just busted in like the Kool-Aid man,
- 48:42Speaker 5: but Hal's privileged walking into their home saying, hey, do
- 48:48Speaker 5: you guys call him Junior?
- 48:49Speaker 2: And they're like, no, he's John.
- 48:52Speaker 5: And he calls him Junior anyway and proceeds to fucking
- 48:55Speaker 5: just keep doing it.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Now, again, people will say, oh, that's just how Hal is.
- 48:59Speaker 2: You know, he's a kooky guy. That is privilege in
- 49:03Speaker 2: front of your face.
- 49:03Speaker 5: No.
- 49:04Speaker 3: No, it's pushing buttons.
- 49:06Speaker 5: Again, this is what I'm saying about the literal manifestation
- 49:09Speaker 5: of white privilege.
- 49:10Speaker 2: It's right there. They're literally doing it.
- 49:12Speaker 5: And that's what's the coldest thing about all of this
- 49:15Speaker 5: when we talk about racist stuff. It is right in
- 49:18Speaker 5: your face. People sat there and watched Strange Fruit hang
- 49:21Speaker 5: in their faces and still, it didn't fucking matter.
- 49:25Speaker 1: They had picnics.
- 49:26Speaker 3: They had picnics and postcards for Strange Fruit.
- 49:31Speaker 5: And for people who don't get it, I need y'all
- 49:33Speaker 5: to watch that scene again and remove the comedic lens
- 49:36Speaker 5: from it.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Just for a second. Watch that again. And again, I'm
- 49:40Speaker 1: going to tell another story once again. Shout out to
- 49:42Speaker 1: my brother, Zev. He's going to be mad. And shout
- 49:44Speaker 1: out to his dad, rest in peace.
- 49:45Speaker 2: Does that be on this show more than he realizes?
- 49:47Speaker 1: No, he listens all the time, so he knows. Shout
- 49:50Speaker 1: out to Drew, everyone, all my brothers who listen. But
- 49:53Speaker 1: Zev and his dad, Louis, rest in peace, definitely raised
- 49:57Speaker 1: me almost as much as my own father. I think
- 50:00Speaker 1: of all the lessons I learned from him so much.
- 50:03Speaker 1: But one day we're all watching Terminator together as kids.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I'm kids, and obviously Louis is his dad. And at
- 50:09Speaker 1: one point, the black police officer shows up, the only
- 50:12Speaker 1: black person, I think, in the first Terminator movie. And Mr.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Blute turns to me and is like, oh, there you go, Ben.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I look nothing like this Negro, first of all. You
- 50:20Speaker 1: know what I mean? Dark-skinned brother in the movie. Five
- 50:23Speaker 1: minutes later, the brother gets killed. Oh, dang, Ben.
- 50:26Speaker 5: Did he mean in the representation kind of way?
- 50:29Speaker 2: What did he mean by that?
- 50:31Speaker 1: Yes, he meant there's the one black person in this movie,
- 50:34Speaker 1: so that must be the black kid that I know.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:38Speaker 1: I can tell stories upon stories about Zev's father. Like
- 50:41Speaker 1: I said, I love him, but you know, there was
- 50:42Speaker 1: a lot of blind spots. And like I even said
- 50:44Speaker 1: on the show, when that man walked in and said,
- 50:47Speaker 1: Midwest hubstables is the type of shit that a white
- 50:51Speaker 1: person will say when they said they voted for Obama
- 50:54Speaker 1: three times. Like it is, you know, that was all
- 50:57Speaker 1: the white people I grew up around. You know, it's
- 50:59Speaker 1: that same type of thing. It's like, there you are, Ben,
- 51:02Speaker 1: you know, even though you look nothing like this Negro,
- 51:04Speaker 1: you know, even though the only black people I know
- 51:06Speaker 1: are the hubstables. So this good family has got to
- 51:09Speaker 1: be the hubstables.
- 51:09Speaker 5: You know, it's just, it's the get out whites.
- 51:11Speaker 1: It's the get out whites. I grew up around the
- 51:14Speaker 1: get out whites. I love them all to this day,
- 51:16Speaker 1: but not all of them. The majority of them, but yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 1: I grew up around them. It's exhausting.
- 51:24Speaker 6: I think it's rough because we call that microaggression. But
- 51:28Speaker 6: it's so macro. It's very much in your face.
- 51:32Speaker 3: It's so in your face.
- 51:34Speaker 5: I was offended by the hustle comments. I was offended
- 51:37Speaker 5: by the junior. I was offended by all that shit.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Yeah, but also let's say, let's call a spade a spade.
- 51:42Speaker 3: Him saying junior is like calling him boy. It's just
- 51:45Speaker 3: like all the white men saying boy.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Right when your dad says, we don't call him that,
- 51:49Speaker 1: and you say it again.
- 51:51Speaker 3: You call him boy.
- 51:52Speaker 2: He said it 50 times.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Man, my dad would have been a punching Hal Jordan
- 51:56Speaker 1: in the mouth, boy. Like, shit. Don't call my son
- 52:00Speaker 1: out his name in front of me. Like, nah, uh-uh.
- 52:05Speaker 5: And then and then all and all of it is
- 52:06Speaker 5: an act right because we know this is 2016 how
- 52:10Speaker 5: so you know he's being all cheery and shit we're
- 52:12Speaker 5: just like what's going on he comes out immediately removes
- 52:15Speaker 5: the mask and it's just like fuck you you ain't
- 52:17Speaker 5: taking this ring so but i want to say i do.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Want to note too that i feel like white folks
- 52:22Speaker 3: like to say this thing where they're like it's not
- 52:25Speaker 3: racism and whatever it's just how it like they because
- 52:27Speaker 3: i'm the lens of like the OG whites, the British whites, right?
- 52:31Speaker 3: And they're like their press and how they just like,
- 52:34Speaker 3: they hark crazy on everybody. They talk crazy about all
- 52:37Speaker 3: these white folks in the press all the time. But
- 52:40Speaker 3: whenever there's a Black person, that's when the race comes in.
- 52:43Speaker 3: And that's i.e. the Meghan Markle of it all. But
- 52:46Speaker 3: then they're like, well, y'all can't take a joke, y'all
- 52:47Speaker 3: can't take a whatever, because they do go crazy on everybody.
- 52:50Speaker 3: But when race comes into play, and y'all are the
- 52:53Speaker 3: ones who created racism in the first place, and you
- 52:55Speaker 3: know that, like, there's power behind y'all using racism against folks,
- 53:00Speaker 3: and y'all don't care, you just want to invoke it,
- 53:02Speaker 3: it's not the same thing. Stop trying to equivocate being
- 53:05Speaker 3: racist with calling someone the C word. I'm not trying
- 53:09Speaker 3: to get the video flagged. Or... saying all this other
- 53:13Speaker 3: like bullshit, like a gossip mess or whatever, calling someone
- 53:16Speaker 3: all kinds of things out of their name. That is
- 53:18Speaker 3: not the same. They love to equivocate. And it's like,
- 53:22Speaker 3: they love to just like, or try to make these
- 53:24Speaker 3: stories about like, oh, it's all the same. It's not.
- 53:26Speaker 3: And so what I'm saying, he's calling him boy, like
- 53:28Speaker 3: that has terms all the way through the diaspora. I
- 53:32Speaker 3: can speak for the Southern lens of that and like
- 53:34Speaker 3: the American lens of that, but like that, it goes
- 53:37Speaker 3: so far. So for Hal to be like, he's pissy
- 53:43Speaker 3: because he knows that he's getting out of his position. Sure.
- 53:48Speaker 3: But you don't invoke racism to talk about how you're
- 53:54Speaker 3: pissed off about something that he, that John jr. Don't
- 53:57Speaker 3: got no power over. You're over here using racism against
- 54:01Speaker 3: someone who ain't got no power in the first place. Cause,
- 54:04Speaker 3: and that shows how much power you have that you
- 54:06Speaker 3: can use racism over him. Like that's an, What's not clicking?
- 54:10Speaker 3: What is, that's not fun times. That's just not for
- 54:12Speaker 3: the jollies. That's like legit bullshit.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Like, so it's not the same thing.
- 54:16Speaker 5: The fact that you can weaponize racism at all is
- 54:19Speaker 5: because of your privilege. It's literally designed so only you
- 54:23Speaker 5: can use it. That's how racism works, guys. Black people
- 54:26Speaker 5: in America can't be racist towards the whites, guys.
- 54:28Speaker 2: You can be bigots.
- 54:30Speaker 5: We can, you know, be prejudiced, but we're not racist
- 54:33Speaker 5: towards the white. Racist requires a system where you are
- 54:36Speaker 5: in fact in power.
- 54:39Speaker 2: We don't have that.
- 54:40Speaker 3: The more you know.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Real quick, because we have not said her name, I
- 54:46Speaker 1: want to give a shout out to Jasmine Cephas Jones,
- 54:50Speaker 1: who plays Bernadette. You know, put her up for the Emmy. Already,
- 54:55Speaker 1: you know, best actress right there. Needs it. Just incredible work.
- 55:01Speaker 1: And they're also the daughter of Ron Cephas Jones, rest
- 55:05Speaker 1: in peace, who is famous for his role on This
- 55:08Speaker 1: Is Us. He was also on Luke Cage.
- 55:10Speaker 4: He came back sunny.
- 55:12Speaker 1: You know? Incredible actor, incredible family of actors, and Jasmine
- 55:20Speaker 1: is carrying on that tradition, you know, shining light. Just,
- 55:23Speaker 1: I mean, just stunning work in this episode. And one
- 55:28Speaker 1: of my favorite moments is, like, it's so wild because
- 55:31Speaker 1: she sits there, like, we talked about how when he's
- 55:33Speaker 1: ready to shoot the apple off her head, It's because
- 55:37Speaker 1: all his life, this woman has said, yo, them birds,
- 55:39Speaker 1: them birds, you know? And then when he shook, she's like, oh,
- 55:43Speaker 1: I guess the birds were lying. Or I guess the
- 55:45Speaker 1: birds weren't lying.
- 55:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but she's also talking shit to Senior, too.
- 55:49Speaker 2: Like, that was the craziest thing to me.
- 55:51Speaker 1: No, that was a crazy moment because she also says,
- 55:54Speaker 1: that fear is contagious, you bitch. You know what I mean?
- 55:57Speaker 1: Shook-ass nigga, you know? And then turns around and tells
- 56:02Speaker 1: this kid... Tells this kid, oh, guess what? I was
- 56:06Speaker 1: lying about the birds. After saying, you know, guess the.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Birds weren't lying. Oh, I was lying about the birds.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Wasn't that funny? It was a little bit crazy of them.
- 56:16Speaker 5: I mean, you looked at a five-year-old, look at each
- 56:19Speaker 5: other and said.
- 56:21Speaker 2: He's old enough to know that he's Jesus.
- 56:23Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 6: As the father of a five-year-old, that is probably the
- 56:27Speaker 6: craziest part of the episode.
- 56:28Speaker 1: Monica, are you dead? My nephew is not ready to
- 56:31Speaker 1: know he's Jesus. That man is so like.
- 56:35Speaker 5: You're not even ready to know that you're going to
- 56:36Speaker 5: be seven years old one day.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Right.
- 56:38Speaker 2: Let alone. Is it just me?
- 56:40Speaker 3: I think they kind of did that because of the
- 56:42Speaker 3: older kids. Like, I think what they were doing was like,
- 56:45Speaker 3: yeah like they were already showing a difference and because
- 56:48Speaker 3: that's what they mentioned at that point like we know
- 56:50Speaker 3: that we treat you differently we know that you have
- 56:52Speaker 3: a different room from your brothers they're explaining to they're
- 56:55Speaker 3: using they're telling him now at five because they want
- 56:59Speaker 3: to explain to the older kids he's not on the
- 57:01Speaker 3: same journey and they can't keep up this like.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Take them older niggas into the room and tell them
- 57:06Speaker 1: that shit.
- 57:08Speaker 4: I was fully ready.
- 57:10Speaker 2: You could talk them out for cheeseburgers and be like,
- 57:11Speaker 2: by the way, we.
- 57:12Speaker 5: Don't really fuck with you little niggas because your brother's
- 57:16Speaker 5: the promised one.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Just so you're aware.
- 57:19Speaker 3: In a better household, they would see that that's not favoritism.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Being treated that way is not actually a good thing.
- 57:28Speaker 5: It is a level of favoritism. There's a quote reason
- 57:31Speaker 5: behind it, but it's still favoritism. You are Neo, you
- 57:34Speaker 5: are the one. There is still a level of favoritism there.
- 57:37Speaker 5: And you can argue about, well, what favoritism means to
- 57:39Speaker 5: you from a subjective standpoint, but it's still you're favoring
- 57:43Speaker 5: someone else because of a goal or area you're trying
- 57:46Speaker 5: to push them to. There's things you're doing with that
- 57:48Speaker 5: one that you're not doing with the others. Whether or
- 57:49Speaker 5: not it's good stuff you're doing kind of doesn't matter.
- 57:51Speaker 5: It's just a level of favoritism.
- 57:53Speaker 1: My dad treated me and my sister completely a thousand
- 57:57Speaker 1: percent differently, boy. Like, man, when he passed, rest in
- 58:00Speaker 1: peace again, like my sister told stories, I was like,
- 58:03Speaker 1: You know, and so they never explained that shit. No,
- 58:06Speaker 1: there's no need for that.
- 58:07Speaker 2: They could have sidebarred that.
- 58:08Speaker 1: My dad beat my ass. You know, he didn't touch her. Like,
- 58:10Speaker 1: you know, it was no explaining that.
- 58:11Speaker 5: You're right, Portia, about like explaining, but damn, did they
- 58:14Speaker 5: have to do it that way?
- 58:16Speaker 1: No, that's what I'm saying. That was the worst explanation ever. Like,
- 58:18Speaker 1: take these dudes in the other room if you're explaining
- 58:21Speaker 1: it to them and don't tell the five-year-old. Like, Jesus.
- 58:28Speaker 6: I was ready for his brothers to like sell him
- 58:30Speaker 6: into slavery like Joseph, but I realized they would not.
- 58:34Speaker 4: Because they actually liked their life. Yes, they had a
- 58:37Speaker 4: good life.
- 58:38Speaker 1: Yeah. And the brothers loved each other. You can't listen
- 58:41Speaker 1: to OutKast?
- 58:41Speaker 5: I will say what I did like was the brothers
- 58:43Speaker 5: still loved each other. Now, you did see that and
- 58:45Speaker 5: you saw it also at the very first episode. Like,
- 58:48Speaker 5: there was a tinge of like... camaraderie there was camaraderie
- 58:51Speaker 5: but there was also I don't want to say jealousy
- 58:53Speaker 5: but there was also a tinge of one of the
- 58:54Speaker 5: brothers was very yeah was kind of always looking at
- 58:57Speaker 5: him like I don't really rock with this little nigga
- 59:00Speaker 5: like it was something and understandably because that's because of
- 59:03Speaker 5: the treatment of the parents to John versus them so
- 59:06Speaker 5: that's what I'm saying there is favoritism but again, just
- 59:11Speaker 5: maybe done in the wrong way.
- 59:13Speaker 3: I mean, they got to have pillow fights in their room,
- 59:15Speaker 3: and John's just walking by. He's walking back from walking
- 59:18Speaker 3: in the bad neighborhood back home, and his brothers are
- 59:21Speaker 3: just pillow fighting, not paying him any mind. His mother's
- 59:24Speaker 3: just sitting there like, do you want a pork chop? Like, that's...
- 59:27Speaker 3: The difference in fun and childhood. Oh, my God.
- 59:31Speaker 4: Left that man in South Central and was like, hey,
- 59:33Speaker 4: it's a pork chop in the microwave, dog. Ain't even
- 59:36Speaker 4: warming up for him. It ain't even fresh. Oh, my God.
- 59:39Speaker 1: You got to listen to Outkast through the wall. That
- 59:41Speaker 1: alone is like, oof. My life is real.
- 59:47Speaker 5: It reminds me just of very, like, when you, like,
- 59:49Speaker 5: if you grow up like a preacher's kid and, you know,
- 59:51Speaker 5: you can't listen to nothing secular, can't do nothing secular,
- 59:54Speaker 5: but you know about it, right? Because you sneak in
- 59:56Speaker 5: on the side like that. That has, you know, extreme
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: approaches to it as well. So, again, we talked about obsession,
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: being crazy. This reminds me of religion, too. Like, it's
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: all looped in. There's all pieces of it all together. That's,
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: you know, their religion was you're going to be the lantern.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: The fact that this touched on so much of the
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: Black experience in 59 minutes is, like, insane to me.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: And... No, I mean, so many levels, like just, you know,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: we've talked about the, you know, the non-Blackness, you know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: we talked about, which I think is such a powerful
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: idea that we touched on is the fact that Black
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: parents have to raise their kids with love, but also
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: with fear. You know, it's such a weird dichotomy that
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: we have to grow up in. Like, my parents definitely
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: told me I can be anything and do anything I
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: want to be. But then, you know, they beat the living,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: you know, my dad definitely, you know, would put them
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: hands on me and be like, yo, you got to,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: you know, watch out for everything, you know, because everything's
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: out to get you. And he wasn't wrong. You know,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: and it's one of those tough things that it's just
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: like it's impossible to live with. But, you know, we
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: deal with it. A couple of things that I did
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: want to touch on, though, because. Like, you know, we
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: touched on all the blackness of it, but some of
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: the real nerdiness of it. There have been, you know,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: and I love it. People are all over the place with,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: you know, their ideas and theories about what this or
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: that could be. And the whole shot of the man,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: not the man, of the Guardian actually revealing itself to Bernadette.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: People had all kinds of things. I did not know
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: that just because it had the cross on the back,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: people thought that was actually the Martian Manhunter.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: Martian Manhunter?
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: That was, I didn't realize that's why they were making
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: that connection. That is so hilarious to me. And so
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: I'm happy that this show is quickly revealing things where
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: it's like, okay, no, the Martian Manhunter is probably not
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: in this series. We probably won't see the white and
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: green Martians or any of that sort. Whether or not
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: we see the red lanterns or even like the precursor
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to them up is still up in the air at
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: this point. But the story that they're telling on this
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: show is such perfection that I'm not mad at it.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: There were a couple little Easter eggs in this episode,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: like when John is walking through the mall on the
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: way to meet the Guardian, we see the ad for
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Janice Cosmetics in the back, which is owned by the
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: guy who is the Black Mask, and the woman in
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the ad has half the Black Mask on, and that's
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: going to turn up again in Clayface. So, you know,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: it's like we're seeing how the DC universe is connected.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: And I loved when Jon meets the first dude, who
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: I guess is a guardian as well, who gives him
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: the ring. Seeing Jon make the watch from the inside
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: out was just so Jon Stewart. You know, that was
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: just like, I love that little touch of detail they gave.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: And it also looked like the dude dropped a boom
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: tube on the floor when Jon stepped through it. So
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: all these little, you know, comic touches I love. But
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: that ring coming, I mean, the watch coming together was
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: such Jon Stewart and like how Vanessa talked about the writers.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: They wanted to give that aspect of John where he
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: is like the architect, the artist that we all get
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: to see from the comics to bring that into his story.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I thought that was perfectly well done. And John had...
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: It was such a sad touch to me because my
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: man had drawings of birds on his door.
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: Yeah, everywhere.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: God damn it, boy. And this mom was lying to
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: him the whole time.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: I have a question about... Is it normal for Lanterns
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: to touch a ring that isn't their ring?
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Is there any consequence? Like, when they have him do that, like.
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: He's not.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: A Lantern yet, and I don't think it's really an issue, right? BJ,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: as far as I know, like, Lanterns betraying rings, grabbing rings,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: stealing rings. Yeah.
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: No.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: No.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: No, because it's trying to, like, throw his hammer, like,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: You know, once you're worthy of it, you know, they'll
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: pass it along.
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: You know. You said trading rings. So, he'd be stacking rings, too? Like,
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: can you have all the colors of the rainbow in
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: one go?
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: Well, Kyle Jordan, you know.
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: Definitely stole everybody's ring.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: So, you're saying his pocket dimension is actually a big
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: vault for all the thievery that he's been doing across
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: the universe.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: It could be.
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: He was, like, having a planet with the rings?
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: That is a storyline. Like right before Hal goes evil,
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: he goes evil.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: Basically kills all the lanterns, collects their rings. Each ring
- 1:04:26Speaker 6: makes him more powerful.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: So the ultimate white privilege is what you're saying. The
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: colonialism that's taken the trophies.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: You're not wrong.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: I mean, I said it on the recap last night.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: A lot of people don't realize what an asshole Al
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Jordan is. So how Jordan be a pure asshole on
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: this show was like, yeah, that's about right.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: And I didn't realize, and you know, I looked it
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: up afterwards, but that gray wolf character, the one that
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: homeboy unfortunately sat for for nine months is actually a
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: real canon character. Um, protector of Kazbek installed by Lex
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: Luthor himself.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: So the area that he was in, it got something
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: to do with Lex. He's involved.
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: So I did not know that about it. But yeah, Ben,
- 1:05:08Speaker 5: I like the items you touched on, especially about the
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: whole watch thing. Cause the fact that he's supposed to
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: look at things from the inside out and the inner
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: workings of it and the intricacies of it. which is
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: why I'm also like when I go back to the
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: very first episode I'm like so then why did you
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: talk to the cop and told him that that was
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: a if you looked at things so like carefully like
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: why did you make that mistake but whatever we're here
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: now because.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: He's also arrogant he's also everything else you know that's
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: the thing and that was something else I wanted to
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: touch on because John even though he's told in this
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: episode yo you're gonna you know would you be willing
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: to take Hal out everything in the first episode he
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: doesn't go to the Guardians, you know, immediately. Like, he
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: disobeys them as well. Like, he does show loyalty to Hal. Yes. So, somewhat,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: instead of just immediately reporting him and be like, okay,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: now it's my turn for the ring.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: So.
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: He has a level. He's still a man of honor,
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: if so, right? Like, it's... It's, again, the humanistic approach
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: to character building, right? Like, everyone's complicated. Nobody's black and white.
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: There are shades of gray everywhere. And that's what makes
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: the character interesting. He's not like a full Boy Scout, right? Like,
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: there's clearly sins and failures on his part.
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: I think that he does. But whenever you were saying
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: earlier that he has black and white thinking, like in
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: previous episodes, I think he does display that whenever he's
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: talking to the Guardian and he's asking her, like, is
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: that an order? And he says, well, if you became
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: a guardian, I mean, the Lantern, you would, that would
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: be in an order. So I think his frame of
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: mind is, if it's an order, I'm going to do
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: the order. If it's not an order, then I have, like,
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: more fruit rain to do about it the way I
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: want to do it. But if it's a direct order,
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: I'm not going to disobey a direct order.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: True indeed. Yeah.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Shout out to Laura Linney, who plays Liana, the guardian.
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: Another.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: you know, huge actor, um, Marty Bird's wife. If you watched, uh, what?
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: Ozark. If you watch Ozark.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Also the Truman show. Oh, shit.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: I didn't realize that.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Yeah. Truman's wife.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: I do like her as Leanna. I like how she
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: portrays that character. It's clear, like, it's certain tics and
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: things she does where it's just like, okay, you're not
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: from here, right? And, you know, and even her being
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: expressed and told by Bernadette.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: About, like, do you know what you did?
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: Like, do you know the mess you put us in
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: by doing this and doing this to a Black man?
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: And she's just like, Nah, I didn't realize that. Like,
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: it's kind of like a haze over her face. But
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: it makes sense, right? And I appreciated how she did
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: that acting.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: She was like, ah, cool, yeah, yeah, whatever.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Because of your brown skin.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: Your damn fucking diamond.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Brown skin?
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: OK, but it makes sense.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: So for someone who's just not of this planet and
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: not of this construct of this world. So and also
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: that whole conversation she had with John just about when
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: John was like, you don't know what it's like to
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: have a family, what it means. You know, she said
- 1:07:58Speaker 5: when they're born, they're born singular and they don't they
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: don't have the same type of social situation.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: I thought that was really interesting as well.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: And that was also very interesting because John says you
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: can't explain family to someone who doesn't have one. And
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: it's also interesting because I related to John so much
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: in that scene because he's like, this is my family.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: And that's the same thing. It's like, you know, like
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: I said, my dad was a wild out boy, et cetera.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: That's still my father, you know, and I love him
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: forever because he raised me and did everything else. And
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: it's like family. We don't get to choose them, you know,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: but they're still our family, you know, no matter what.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: And in a lot of cases, they are the ones
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: who mess you up, but they're still going to be
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: your family.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: I love that whenever he whenever the guardian asked him
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: if he's gonna miss them and he said he lived
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: with him for 18 years and he grew up missing
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: them and i'm like that's the realest words that's been
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: spoke on family this whole that really.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Did hurt i can relate yeah I.
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: Just cannot believe that man sat there for nine months
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: just for the white man to come down and swoop.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: The prize right out from under him.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: So.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: On a whim.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: On a whim. Drunkenly.
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: And on some like real casual shit.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Like, oh, you need me to come get this?
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: Which, it's just like, god damn. Literally no one asked him. Like,
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: he just heard it, and then he just did. Like,
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: nobody asked him to do that. I think it's, I
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: also think it's interesting, like, whenever he says he doesn't
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: like cheeseburgers, whenever he shoots the apple off his arm,
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: I'm like, is that, because it's like, it's now become
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: negative reinforcement. Like, when he was younger, before he started
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: doing it, did he like cheeseburgers? Like, that actually surprised me.
- 1:09:38Speaker 5: Over time, he's like, and why the man's a vegan
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: now yes a.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Goddamn cheeseburger off because I got an apple shot off
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: my head like fuck a cheeseburger I never wanted one
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: of them again like you think I want my dad
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: to shoot this apple off my head day after day
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: no I'm doing this because y'all told me I was
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: space Jesus Like, I'm just as crazy as the rest
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: of y'all at this point. Like, we all, you know,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: we all in this. The two brothers are probably, I
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: really want to see how they do it.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: I want to see, I do want to see that dynamic.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: I will say that just, especially the eldest one where
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: I said, like, you could tell there's some hints of
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: concern there between their relationship and understandably, but I would
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: love to see what it's like now and what are
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: they doing and how have they been deeply affected by
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: all of this wildness going on in their household.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I see a, I see an orange or a red
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: ring on one of their future boys. Oh, one of
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: the things or jealousy.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: One of the things that was shown in the after
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: show that I don't remember being part of the regular show,
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: and I was like, I just don't remember it, was
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: that his mom, Bernadette, tells John Jr. that one day
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: all the little boys are going to want to be
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: just like him. And I wonder how much that plays
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: in his head when he thinks about his brothers and, like,
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: why he's chosen his path. And he's like, even if
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: they don't mess with me, other little boys will want
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: to be like me, just like I wanted to be
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: like Hal. And, like, if that's the thing that keeps
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: him on the road or whatever. Yeah.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: On that note, because it's like one, he's gender impressed
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: little black boys and someone asked when we were doing
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: a live chat last night, they asked, do you think
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: that John loves black people? And I don't think so. One,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: because his mom says you ain't got time to love
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: anyone pretty much.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: What is he being socialized around other black folks?
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: That part.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: Besides his own family.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: That part. And they don't see him, you know, his
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: brothers don't see him as black. Besides telling him.
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: Yeah, do you think he's one of those I don't
- 1:11:32Speaker 5: see race people? I, yes.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: And I think it's also, like I said before, that
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: military part is also going into that where he's just,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: you know, dehumanized to the point where he doesn't see anything.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: It's just, you know, it's just numbers. Yeah. Targets. Yeah.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: Like you said, I don't want to know the man.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I just need to know the mission. Cause it's not,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: you know, it's not a human to me. It's just,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: you know, an objective to be done. So I don't
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: think he sees a lot of like, John is touched.
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: But to name this episode Outkast, like, after the band,
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: and to needle drop A.T. Aliens and Gasoline Dreams, like,
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: that is, there's so many layers in that. And, like,
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: I get into the line about, like, one day, like,
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: little boys are going to want to be just like you. Like,
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: that's what Outkast has heard so much of their lives.
- 1:12:21Speaker 5: And I remember, like.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Under 2000 drop in like the thought that like he
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: doesn't like the idea that people look up to him
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: like in party the beyonce song he's like people like
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: kiddos say he looks up to me that just makes
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: me feel old like he like that was never a
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: dynamic that he wanted to cultivate in his brain and
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: yet it's true so i wonder if that's going to
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: become part of like junior's journey too it's like and
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: at one part in his life he probably cared that
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: other kids would probably look up to him and so
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: by the time maybe we get 2026 he's not going
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: to want that dynamic.
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: Anymore I mean, at this point, the pursuit of the
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: lantern ring is so personal. Yes. Like, John views it
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: as his birthright. Yes.
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: I don't even know if it's, like, if there's anything
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: that even really processes, like, how other people might feel
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: about him getting that.
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: Mm.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: You're right.
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: And how he just processes how he moves about the world. Like,
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: that's a fantastic choice of words because it's literal.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: That is his birthright.
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: He was an infant when this shit first went down.
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: And then he, you know, it still was when they said,
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: when they passed the maybes on him, because they spoke
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: very tentatively. Portia pointed that out very, very particularly. Like,
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: you could be a candidate. Like, you got to be
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: careful when people tell you things and the words that
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: they use. Be very precise in the words that they
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: use because... They didn't say you was going to get it.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: It might be.
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: And when we talk about that pursuit of the maybe, right?
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: It's hard enough just as a human. But then as
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: a Black man?
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: To be alien-level ready candidate. Like, that was even the
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: possibility that they knew of before the whole Hal situation. So, like,
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: this is the first time ever... in human life that
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: they this is part of written memory that they notice
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: it's a possibility and suddenly they're gonna thrust it onto
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: an infant little black.
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: Boy which is wild and by the time john gets
- 1:14:13Speaker 6: in this position there's already been hal and guy gardner
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: yep yep like so what must it mean to him
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: to like finally have this opportunity and the fact that
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: he still has to interview for it like that's crazy.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: And there was a guy in there before him. Someone's
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: coming out the door. Yeah.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Everyone has already tried to make into Kyle Rayner, who
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: is another Greenlander. It's not Kyle, folks. Don't do this.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Everyone on this show does not have to be connected
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: to the lore. But it is, yeah, it is interesting,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: because where is Guy? Because I thought we were going
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: to see Guy in this episode, but we still haven't
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: seen Guy.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: We're going to see him.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: And so when does Guy get his ring, right? Because
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: is it before that interview that John goes on? It
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: has to be, right? I would think so. It has
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: to be, right? Because that's, yeah, like, it pretty much
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: has to be.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: Is there, like, an age limit on it? It's not
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: like you're a president. It's not like you got to be, like,
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: 35 before you can be pregnant.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. So... And Guy is way out
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: in the public. So John definitely knows about Guy. So
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: he's feeling passed over twice at this point, if that
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: is the case. Oof.
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: Anything else before we get out of here?
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: Um i could do the rainbow and the message this
- 1:15:33Speaker 5: is why black people are important.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: Like the odysseus and mirror what would you like your rainbow.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: To say yeah yeah yeah yeah this.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Is why black people are important.
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: Um i i listen i i again just kudos to
- 1:15:49Speaker 5: vanessa bait and kelly and that the whole team for
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: even pulling this out of their like y'all The fact
- 1:15:56Speaker 5: that this was on, I think you said it really good, BJ,
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: in the beginning. The fact that this is on primetime, HBO,
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: 9 p.m. Sunday, which means it becomes water cooler conversation
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: the next day.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: And perhaps for the full week, it is food for us.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Delicious fucking food for us. And it's... Go ahead, Ben.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: You about to say it. Go ahead. It's a much
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: bigger hit than even Watchmen was, than now, than House
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: of Dragon. But to be a bigger hit than things
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: like Watchmen and or you know, shows that I considered,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: you know, hitting all these topics, but to hit them
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: on a show that's bigger than House of Dragon is
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: fucking crazy.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: Insanity. And it really matters. This is the representation I'm
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: talking about. And again, it doesn't necessarily have to be
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: overt like, you know, all my life I had to fight,
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: but the layers of it and the humanity behind it
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: and the storytelling behind it and the intricacies behind it, like,
- 1:16:54Speaker 5: for a show to be able to do this, you know?
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: And I just really hope, even if you're not Black,
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: that you really dig into this and learn about what's
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: going on and the underlying expression of what's being said,
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: what's being shown on the screen. And the stuff we're
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: telling you, that's why we do this podcast. So you're like, bro,
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: there's another layer that you missed. There's another plane of existence, right?
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: There's another universe out there.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: So I'm just.
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: Like, this was a powerful episode for me. I'm just
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: really pleased about it.
- 1:17:22Speaker 3: I'm interested to see if, like, part of what we
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: discussed when we were telling all of our stories, like,
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: because John, we just discussed how John Jr. probably is
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: not going to be someone who, like, his parents expressed
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: things about race, but he's probably not going to express
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: that much about race. if part of his journey is
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: going to be about recognizing that assimilation is never going
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: to save him, like trying to be what has occurred
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: before is not, was going to be his saving grace
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: when he goes on his journey to become a lantern.
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: Like that could be, I feel like that could be
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: a very interesting journey for us to see the season.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: Sinestro says something that I'm going to connect to that
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: point where he says, well, he has no fear, so
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: he could be easily controlled. And that just reminds me
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: of the point about assimilation and, and, and, If you're
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: just going on the party lines, right? You're just doing
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: it by the book. You can easily be swayed. You
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: can easily be turned around and all this other stuff.
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: So that is going to be a huge factor and
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: absolutely something that he's going to have to overcome.
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: Yeah. Facts.
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: Nah, because that will start another episode when we give
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: him my opinion. So I want to echo what you said, Tatiana,
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: just about Vanessa Bade and Kelly.
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: I brought up this magazine.
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: This is a back issue number eight, but it has
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: inside Neil Adams, who's the co-creator of Greenland or Jon
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: Stewart talking about, you know, how very deliberately Jon Stewart
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: was created. Like at first his name was going to
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: be Lincoln Washington. And they were like, trying to put
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: like thin lips on him like and he was just
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: very adamant Neil Adams this white man was very adamant
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: that like no he needs to have like big full
- 1:18:58Speaker 6: lips he needs to look like Sidney Poitier like even
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: down to like the color codes on like what his
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: skin should look like like there's that level of detail
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: that went into his creation and it was that it was,
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: he was made so intentionally black, even in his first
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: appearance where he like refuses to wear a mask. Like, nah,
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: this man, this black man likes to be out and proud.
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: Like we were doing this, right? Like I'm gonna be
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: a representation. But so for an idea as black as
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: Jon Stewart to then come into the hands of Kyra
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: Rockmore of all people and for her to elevate this
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: man's backstory the way she has, like, I am fully
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: ready to go out and buy a lantern ring, like,
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: and just go full Jon Stewart all day.
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: Like, amazing, amazing work.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I said that. We always talk about this on
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Fallen Nerds, how we have a basic biatch costume of
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: the year at all the Comic-Cons we go to. And
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: it is going to be Lantern City, boy! You're going
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: to see every color, every different variation of lanterns. Oh,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: my God. Look, I was already looking up the Green
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Lantern ring, the official one from DC Comics. I'm thinking
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: about it. I'm not going to lie right now. You know,
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: I'm all in.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: Somebody dropped it in my replies. It's like 70 bucks.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I know. I know.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: That's the price you pay to become a Lantern Corps member.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: It's beautiful, too. It's really beautiful. I might have to
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: It's amazing.
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: All right. BJ, please let the people know where they
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: can find you at.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: Yes, sir. I'm on YouTube at Comics Are Dope.
- 1:20:37Speaker 6: We are nominated, by the way, for a Comic Book

- 1:20:48Speaker 2: So we can go vote.
