- 3:43guy is he's awesome he's very energetic very enthusiastic a
- 3:48very talented artist also i might add but he does it mainly
- 3:53just for fun really nice guys name is patrick and we're going
- 3:57to be you know just chit chatting back and forth but no
- 4:01real strong agenda lined up today but we are going to of
- 4:04course include the random homel discussion towards the end of
- 4:09the episode they always like to have you know those types of
- 4:11things with other people on the channel the last episode we did
- 4:16was with my good friend richard and which was neat because
- 4:21richard 's not a heathen or a pagan you know so his views on
- 4:27things don't necessarily adopt a the exact worldview that i
- 4:31adopted or or have as a pagan and yet you know the the the
- 4:37health or the guidance or you know the the ultimate message i
- 4:41guess you could say that the stands is from the album all
- 4:43deliver resonate regardless of your religious views or whatever
- 4:49so it's going to be kind of neat to have patrick owner 'cause
- 4:51patrick is a pagan uhm like i said before he he kind of was
- 4:56introduced to me through my channel one of my youtube videos
- 5:02it was the how to perform a basic heathen ritual or
- 5:06something like that that video is going to be annotated up in
- 5:10the show notes of this podcast so head up to the show notes of
- 5:14the podcast episode here for the link to that video that was the
- 5:19video that kind of introduced patrick to midgard musings and

- 5:27long distance friendship you know me being where i am and he
- 5:30being where he is there's we are states apart but he has
- 5:36definitely been a really big supporter shows up to a lot of
- 5:38the live streams UM is always commenting on stuff really great
- 5:42guy so we're just going to have you know pretty you know just
- 5:45random discussions see where the see where the discussion leads
- 5:49us as it were you know and then have the health model discussion
- 5:53towards the end where we you know analyze a random stanza

- 11:12good friend here first time guest of the podcast but a
- 11:16longtime supporter i would say uhm of midgard musings in
- 11:21general so his name is patrick and i would like for you patrick
- 11:25if you wouldn't mind just introducing yourself to the
- 11:27listeners out there so thank you so much first of all for joining
- 11:30and welcome that was an honor and pleasure jesse and yes this
- 11:34is our patrick walsh shop been found jesse for gosh a little
- 11:39over a year now and it's a thing quite a journey indeed yeah i
- 11:44did mention earlier before you joined here patrick that our our
- 11:49friendship kind of blossomed or started with your supporting
- 11:53midgard musings and i think maybe you can correct me if i'm
- 11:57wrong but i'm pretty sure that the video that you discovered i
- 12:02actually you know we we've talked about it in passing but
- 12:04like you you've discovered midgard music through through
- 12:07you tube video right that is exactly correct yeah and so i
- 12:11know you mentioned that video of to me like hey this is kind of
- 12:15where everything started you know like this is where i like i
- 12:19found out about you and where we kind of developed our friendship
- 12:21from but i would love if you wouldn't mind sharing for myself
- 12:25and for everybody listening on what that video was about what
- 12:29the video was and why did it stand out to you so much like
- 12:32what kind of made it so yeah i would love to so yeah it's just
- 12:37around the time is right before i went to go see hailong in
- 12:43person but a little bit before that is i got a reintroduced
- 12:48myself into the heathen path and it was a of course i saw fit by
- 12:54fate or whatever you choose to call it but anyways so naturally
- 13:00when i'm trying to look for information or wisdom i go to
- 13:04youtube and just you know went about various different channels
- 13:08and then i came across your channel and at first glance and
- 13:14first impression is i see this man i'm like this is a relatable
- 13:20and approachable person and i like to think i'm a good judge
- 13:24of character and always above all you trust your gut and you
- 13:28know i believe that first impressions are most definitely
- 13:31and most lasting impression OK like appreciate that kind of
- 13:37feedback absolutely it's a start from there you know i just i saw
- 13:42the the video referring to you know going about a ritual and i
- 13:47can't explain enough how infuriating infuriating is to
- 13:50get so many different sources you feel kind of lost in like a
- 13:54maze like i don't know where to start where to go but your video
- 13:58is very hands on and very you know easy to approach and to
- 14:03follow great and that was the one for a like how to perform a
- 14:09basic heathen ritual i think right that's right yeah yeah
- 14:14which i'll i'll link that video for anybody interested who
- 14:17hasn't seen it yet that's listening it'll be in the show
- 14:20notes of the podcast so you know while you're listening i you
- 14:23know just be sure to head to the show notes and uh and check it
- 14:27out and see if you know anybody listening here that's wants to
- 14:32maybe get a point of view from just one pagan two to others you
- 14:36know i've talked about it enough in my videos in my podcast like
- 14:40my general approach to this path is being strongly rooted in
- 14:47historical information but i am a pagan that lives in modern
- 14:51times we are all living in modern times and i feel that
- 14:53there's a place for the historical stuff and there's
- 14:59also a place for growth in the modern day too develop our own
- 15:03traditions and develop our own ways of doing things that fit
- 15:07into the style of who we are how we practice what kind of heathen
- 15:11we are you know but i'm glad to hear that you know patrick the
- 15:15video resonated with you and sparked a a friendship i don't
- 15:20get that very often not that i look for it but you know when
- 15:26people relate to the content that i put out in whatever way
- 15:31like that's kind of what we've always want you know like we
- 15:33want to see that the information that we're sharing first of all
- 15:36is enjoyable and that it's a useful right 'cause i know when
- 15:41i first came to and when i first came to heathenry i was a bit
- 15:45lost i didn't have anybody to kind of teach me or or show me
- 15:48what to do or how to do it and so much of uh so much of the
- 15:55audience that comes to heathenry comes from other backgrounds i
- 15:59don't know if you're one of those types or even care to talk
- 16:01about it like did you come into heathenry from a totally
- 16:06different view of life or the world or you know would it you
- 16:09know it's if you want to talk about like what your previous
- 16:12religious views were that's fine if you don't that's OK too
- 16:14certainly i came from a very strong you know rooted christian
- 16:18background so re learning or not even re learning it was like a
- 16:21reprogramming almost right like you have to skip your thoughts
- 16:25on on so many things what was it like for you and if you want to
- 16:30if you care to talk about that go right ahead absolutely yeah
- 16:33so i was raised in you know baptized as a roman catholic and
- 16:38uh i i know there are a lot of divino right for me though being
- 16:44born with this birth defect come i it away felt very grateful and
- 16:48blessed at that time because i was in a close knit neighborhood
- 16:52and community where my family and my friends were one the same
- 16:56a lot like things are now which is kind of strange but it was
- 17:01very important for me to be in that kind of environment and it
- 17:03suited me well and it suited his purpose and then from there as i
- 17:08went to the teenage years i began to explore and go down
- 17:12various paths and i'll never forget when i first really found
- 17:17you know norse paganism unfortunately it didn't last
- 17:20much time to kind of fleet up my mind at the time 'cause there's
- 17:23so many things going on and then i kind of fast forward that
- 17:27until about two years ago or so is but i really started to
- 17:33really take that path seriously rather than dabbling like i've
- 17:37done through various different beliefs of my past so that's
- 17:43really uh i think you know it out of all the people that i've
- 17:48whether become friends with or have had some sort of connection
- 17:51with whether it be through the channel or through mutual
- 17:55friends i don't know of anybody off the top of my head that i
- 17:59can say for sure came into heathenry from solecism uhm and
- 18:06it's an interesting topic to me i don't know if you've ever
- 18:09thought about this or have had any similar discussions or or
- 18:12your own thoughts but i personally after could see i was
- 18:16i i my parents they were born and raised and and and baptized
- 18:21into the catholic church as well but they didn't raise my sister
- 18:24and i in catholicism uhm i i have however attended catholic
- 18:29masses throughout my life and i noticed that there's a strong
- 18:35difference between a catholic practices or or catholic mass
- 18:41versus like a a baptist christian church or or the sort
- 18:44of christian church and i thought later on especially when
- 18:48i came into a pagan style of belief in in north north
- 18:52paganism that there are so many ritual elements to what
- 18:57catholicism and embraces right the sitting up the standing down
- 19:01the chantings of these various prayers there's so many ritual
- 19:04elements into me i always sat back and i thought well
- 19:08catholics are just pagans in denial they haven't quite taken
- 19:11the plunge yet they're they they've got all their saints
- 19:14they've got all their religious rites and rituals and things so
- 19:19it's like you're you've gotta you know it's paganism with a
- 19:23christian veneer added to it what do you think about that how
- 19:26do you what would you say to somebody that like me not ever
- 19:30really looking out starvation because it's funny invention
- 19:34because i've actually it kind of explains why i respected that
- 19:38faith will practice so much it's because as far as contrast
- 19:42between the catholic mass and the christian asked it's
- 19:44definitely nine day the energy is far more different and
- 19:48everyone has their preference but i really took a respect and
- 19:51reverence for the atmosphere of virtual because i feel like
- 19:55you're separating yourself from the mundane your and it's it's a
- 19:59really good point is you know like you know tag isn't in our
- 20:03catholics in denial it's just you know and it's like when they
- 20:06do the blessings of the holy water reminds me right away of
- 20:09bloody i'm like that's that's too much it's but it's very
- 20:13interesting though you know it's just you know it's that
- 20:16approached the sacredness that you know that i connect with and
- 20:20i respect and you know i know a lot of people you know we'll
- 20:25talk down to upper face you know i respect everyone for who you
- 20:27are what you are as long as it doesn't hurt anybody but of
- 20:30course i'm going to stand up and you know be loyal to what i
- 20:34follow of course but yeah no i i love that approach and i and i
- 20:39and that's kind of what UM i guess without even trying to
- 20:44adopt it or trying to you know because look we we were where
- 20:48pagans in modern day and and what is the leading religion of
- 20:51the world or what is the leading religious views of the world
- 20:54it's it's such a broad reach when it comes to whether it's
- 20:58christianity or islam or caste catholicism kind of falls into
- 21:02that christianity umbrella right yeah and umbrella term it's
- 21:08christian faith you know and but with with what midgard musings
- 21:14has has at least what i hope to have started in in developed is
- 21:18a more holistic approach to people in general right my
- 21:22friends some of my very close friends are not heathens one of
- 21:28my dearest friends who's a brother to me is not pagan at
- 21:32all he dabbles a bit in like inochi and stuff he was on the
- 21:36podcast last week and i briefly mentioned him before but the
- 21:40views of the world whether it be you know how to treat a human
- 21:45being you know how to treat other people you don't have to
- 21:49have a specific rule you don't have to have religion to have
- 21:51morality right i really like that point that's that's a very
- 21:55good point like there may be some things about a religious
- 21:59worldview that backs up what you're trying to do morally but
- 22:04ultimately you don't need to have religion just be a decent
- 22:07human being right and and to respect life in general which i
- 22:12think is the root of paganism regardless if it's dramatic or
- 22:17celtic or roman or any other sort of you know a polytheistic
- 22:23approach to things it's it's ultimately our respect for
- 22:26nature of part of which we are like human beings like we
- 22:29coexist and we are part of nature to many extents right
- 22:34right and uh but yeah like the whole like ritual element of a
- 22:41catholic mass i think if uh if anybody out there who has never
- 22:47attended a catholic mass if for no other reason than to just
- 22:52experience it like you know i did i wasn't raised catholic i
- 22:55was baptized catholic and they say like you know like that kind
- 22:59of seals the deal but i you know i was never brought up in the
- 23:03catholic church i didn't i didn't receive communion i
- 23:06didn't go to the you know the various things that they have
- 23:11set up for children along their way to gosh i can't even
- 23:16remember what the the names of them are but you know like
- 23:19you're coming of age sort of milestones along their life but
- 23:22i've been in at a catholic mass and it was like you get your
- 23:27exercise communion and all that yeah exactly down kneel sit
- 23:32stand kneel say this say that like you come out of catholic
- 23:34mass and you're like i think i need to take a shower 'cause i'm
- 23:36sweating over here from all this activity maybe not as much as
- 23:39like starfall C two 'cause you know if you sit there for too
- 23:43long you're gonna pass right out i think that's why they do it i
- 23:47think that's why there's i think that's why they have it's like
- 23:49oh you know we've been too quiet for twenty minutes we gotta get
- 23:52these people stand up say this uh gotta keep him engaged you
- 23:58know but i do and i and i also wanted to key in on something
- 24:01you said earlier about you know with the with the past that you
- 24:06were raised in in the in the sense of community and the
- 24:10things that it fit for you at the time right it it made sense
- 24:13and it fit free at the time and then as you grew up as an
- 24:15individual as you began to explore i think that's something
- 24:19similar to what a lot of folks out here listening can can
- 24:22relate to and i wanted to key in on that specific thing with
- 24:26regards to it the sense of community right 'cause i grew up
- 24:31again with a christian background but the sense of
- 24:34community the church as it were we all take care of each other
- 24:38we all it was like a tribe mentality you know we we took
- 24:43care of our own if somebody needed something there was
- 24:45always someone else there to help we celebrated each other 's
- 24:50victories we sell we and we we helped each other through our
- 24:53struggles you know nobody was alone who really was an island
- 24:57and those that were didn't last very long like there wasn't
- 25:02place in our community and in that quote unquote tribe if you
- 25:06want to call it if you were just so isolated and so withdrawn
- 25:09that you didn't contribute to that so i think it's interesting
- 25:13when you talk about community and and things that it's it's
- 25:16that in and of itself is not tide to a religion because we
- 25:19see it across various cultures and we see it across different
- 25:23religious views inherently i think you know whatever name you
- 25:29want to put to it those are heathen worldviews those are how
- 25:32our ancestors were able to thrive and survive is at the
- 25:36tribal community level people needed to contribute something
- 25:41to their community right if you were just an island out there
- 25:44not doing much of anything for anybody you were you were dead
- 25:48weight at quite often you know you were expendable it's like
- 25:52well here's this guy just killing all the time and not
- 25:56doing anything to help the tribe you know what are you gonna do
- 26:01and they didn't they didn't need a label for it they didn't need
- 26:03a name for it it just is no that was but i think it's a i think
- 26:09it's an interesting thing to note that you i owned a place or
- 26:13or that that you felt in place at the time and that the values
- 26:18inherently that you taught i think stuck with you throughout
- 26:21your life unless i misunderstood what you were saying i feel like
- 26:23you're saying like i know you know it all ISM it it carries
- 26:27over into your view now i'm curious though like kind of like
- 26:32i i hit that stage two i think we all may have especially as
- 26:35we're growing up from our youth our adulthood we're exploring
- 26:39we're finding new things to so much of but our lives were at
- 26:43one point were influenced by the people around us and then we hit
- 26:47a point where we're like i'm thinking for myself i want to
- 26:49figure it out for myself and we we maybe leave or abandoned
- 26:54certain ideals search for things ourselves and then come back to
- 27:00the common denominator right we we come back to something that
- 27:03feels like we're at home and and paganism it sounds like for you
- 27:06felt like it was at home like you felt like it was a almost
- 27:12certainly a mile back then it cut off roots it back to a topic
- 27:16i was gonna mention is about the importance of music and how it
- 27:21could play such a pivotal role and not only you know with
- 27:26spiritual practices but also mental health as well OK in what
- 27:33way like i mean so that that's a that's a great observation and
- 27:36it's a it's such a broad statement you know music can in
- 27:39effect us and hit us in so many different ways how much of that
- 27:43do you think has been like to what extent has it impacted you
- 27:49in your growth as a as a person and as a pagan well music has
- 27:54always been you know very fundamental to me throughout my
- 27:57life but i sound like a broken record a lot when i mentioned
- 28:01this to my friends that it all goes down to around the time
- 28:05before i saw how long in person and then right after it is it
- 28:10changed my life and it's like many people who know who follow
- 28:13the band is there a tribe and you know they're not songs but
- 28:18their rituals i remember getting one of my close friends uh jamie
- 28:23who took me to see them in chicago it was like a pilgrimage
- 28:28something special is this something about that music that
- 28:31resonated deep inside of me and awoke and all these latent
- 28:35feelings and emotions or oppressions that i had and i
- 28:39just remembered this for constantly re listening and re
- 28:42listening and really having it soak in but then while arriving
- 28:48there it's just be a part of the facebook group as well i
- 28:56experience a sense of community that i haven't felt in such a
- 28:59very long time and it really just it took me back and really
- 29:04open my mind and this really is crazy yeah i i i'm a bit jealous
- 29:11i gotta admit you know that you've been to a high long uh
- 29:16events you know because like just watching their performances
- 29:22online and and and seeing that not being in person i feel like
- 29:26you really can't appreciate this fully unless you're there in
- 29:31person like you can you can absorb so much from a video
- 29:34online or a song like right now like right now i've got gold
- 29:39gold or playing in the background that's probably the
- 29:43most it's really amazing that you chose this song is this fun
- 29:47hands down hits me to my core every time i mentioned in a post
- 29:52once that no matter what's occurring at the moment if i
- 29:55hear this song or anything from highland i'm taking away from
- 29:59what ails me what what i'm struggling with what's on my
- 30:03mind it just brings me this you know yeah it's it's it's ether
- 30:10oh man like it it does it and i can relate to it and i think a
- 30:13lot of us can just how strong like friends i mean even if you
- 30:18don't know what they're literally saying because
- 30:21highland is speaking in native languages to their their region
- 30:25they're they're either speaking german or or or old like proto
- 30:30indo european languages that you know are not spoken anymore let
- 30:36actively you know what i mean like they're not a spoken
- 30:38language they're they're archaic they sound like how old norse is
- 30:41you know it's it's there's languages that exist today that
- 30:45are similar but nobody today at least not on a broad scale speak
- 30:50old norse it's an academic study you know what i mean i mean the
- 30:54the indo proto indo european or proto germanic languages that
- 31:01come that where old norse comes from like nobody 's talking in
- 31:04that language anymore and to understand what they're saying
- 31:07requires a lot of research and effort to get the gist of it and
- 31:13yet you know we can hear and see but fans like pie long are are
- 31:20doing and it touches us in ways that you can't put it like you
- 31:24can't put a finger on the feeling that you get always it's
- 31:26like it's absolutely not you're you're it's just an emotional
- 31:29overload uhm what i really i'm not the cut shop but i really
- 31:34respect that i'm sure a lot of us can relate to this is this
- 31:37kind of music is meant to be felt not be understood by quite
- 31:43literally like i'm sure a lot of us listen to heavy metal like
- 31:46the gutturals he just you don't understand one damn thing
- 31:49they're safe like you feel it you feel it deep in some guy
- 31:52it's just you know really compliments how you feel and
- 31:55that's something i really enjoy about music and how it helps us
- 31:58you know express ourselves yeah for sure i also like to
- 32:04incorporate music into ritual like we were talking earlier
- 32:09before about the ritual aspects of things that literally put us
- 32:17in a place to separate us from like where you think you
- 32:20mentioned earlier the the separation between the mundane
- 32:23or the profane and sacred forces or sacred elements like there's
- 32:28no denying at least to me that uhm these types of rhythms
- 32:36whether it's a drum beat or anything it helps get us into a
- 32:44like a headspace or or perception of our existence in
- 32:49the world and in the universe that we can connect to things a
- 32:52little bit easier if we're if we have something that kind of like
- 32:56guides us along the way whether it be auditory you know visual
- 33:02and that's what i feel island offers they bring the whole
- 33:05package it's it's audible you know it's it's sound and it's
- 33:09visual like like like you said you were there like i said i'm
- 33:12jealous because you were there and you experienced the ritual
- 33:15aspect of their performance and you're not the only one that
- 33:19i've heard say that so i'm like one of these days i've got to
- 33:22you know do whatever it takes to to be definitely worth the
- 33:25journey and what's funny about my seating is i was not anywhere
- 33:30up front like i wanted to be but despite all that is still there
- 33:35forget the very beginning of the ritual alex one the main shamans
- 33:40of the tribe started the sage the space and that's when you
- 33:43knew something was going to happen and just like oh my gosh
- 33:48here we go and no matter where all seated were all standing you
- 33:51could feel you've seen it probably a couple of videos
- 33:55there's this giant drum in the background yeah and the way that
- 33:59pulsated i'll i'll never forget it like vibrates through my
- 34:03entire core it was just outstanding you know wow yeah i
- 34:10i mean hearing it described and there's some other bands out
- 34:14there or there's some other you know projects that maybe not
- 34:17aren't even a collective of people that maybe like solo
- 34:20projects of things of individuals that are releasing
- 34:24stuff like this i i see a huge like surgeons of folk music
- 34:32along this line nordic folk you know uhm viking music people
- 34:38sometimes put a label to it they people call it different things
- 34:41but i think if you know germanic folk music nordic folk music
- 34:46danheim is another big one that i like to stream and listen to
- 34:51on a regular basis highland barguna voluspa got a couple
- 34:56others who i think you plug lot today yes VM again and i'm not
- 35:04nor two outstanding individuals who have also you know what's
- 35:08funny is daytime was actually my first you know nordic you know
- 35:13vibe music that i started to listen to and that opened up the
- 35:16door to heilung which my great friend of mine introduced me to
- 35:21and this it opens so many wonderful doors and this falls
- 35:25you know music but also meeting different people like i never
- 35:29would have imagined being friends with some of the people
- 35:31but i am today and that's another reason why i'm such a
- 35:35diehard you know highland fan it's just i don't want to seem
- 35:39cliched by any means they have just sticking from directly from
- 35:43experience and you know how i'd like other people to hear their
- 35:46experiences as well yeah and that's the best place to speak
- 35:50from i feel is experience you know like you're not over here
- 35:53blowing smoke not over here just like oh yeah i bought all their
- 35:57albums and i got all their T shirts and you know hail
- 35:59highland whatever like you know you you lived it you experienced
- 36:03it and that spoke to you and i feel it's the most sincere
- 36:07sincerest form and i don't mean this like in a negative way the
- 36:11sincerest form of flattery is when you support somebody or
- 36:18something so purely you know it's not it's not what's the
- 36:24word i'm looking for it's not lip service you know what i mean
- 36:29like you know yeah you can be like oh i like the page or i
- 36:31comment here or there but like no when you're like active in it
- 36:35and you're talking to people and sharing your thoughts and
- 36:38feelings like it's it's the most sincerest form of flattery the
- 36:41purest form of flattery and and i feel like that's where uhm all
- 36:46these projects that pop up that we see 'cause like a lot of this
- 36:50this type of music or a lot of these types of projects that
- 36:53i've come to and have been due to folks like yourself who are
- 36:57sharing that information like wow i didn't know this existed
- 37:01until now you know so there's this whole networking thing that
- 37:05exists you know this like extended sort of family element
- 37:09which i've talked a number of times on whether it's podcasts
- 37:14or my channel about this illusion of family that exists
- 37:19with online forums whether it be social media or uhm you know
- 37:26online fan clubs and things like that it gives a false sense of
- 37:29or false or an illusion of a family for a lot of people and
- 37:34then you've got folks like yourself who understand the the
- 37:40heart behind it all and you're not you're not loosely throwing
- 37:44out terms like you know brother sister family my tribe you know
- 37:47like i feel like you're one of those guys that really
- 37:50understands the the heart behind it or the inherent meaning
- 37:54behind it and you're not lost in the illusion of of what an
- 37:58online group aurora email subscription list represents you
- 38:03know it's not a replacement something it's just an inclusion
- 38:06exactly and that's that's very important and i i've seen that a
- 38:10lot it's like here a lot keeps saying skull and things like
- 38:14that yeah guilty is saying that but now i'm really starting to
- 38:17notice it and i'm starting to respect that you know maybe it
- 38:21would be more ideal for myself and my friends if you know where
- 38:26proper terminology would be nice but also it's like people saying
- 38:29don't viking i'm like you don't understand that the year not
- 38:32you're not a viking not by a stretch i'm sorry i'm walking
- 38:35away now like i've just i can't handle it you mentioned that a
- 38:40few of your podcasts and a time you mentioned that this had this
- 38:43smirk on my face like yep yep don't get me started yeah you
- 38:48could just go down that rabbit hole you know and look like i'm
- 38:52one of those types where hey if i say something and people wanna
- 38:55like i'm very i'm very sensitive of the fact that you know
- 39:01something that that is said to whether it's here on a podcast
- 39:03or on my channel or any of the other social media platforms
- 39:06that i'm seen or heard on it's like well you know jesse said it
- 39:10and that's that's the way i think now because he said it
- 39:14like i'm not an authority i'm not some sort of end all be all
- 39:17my views and my way of thinking are developed through my own
- 39:22experiences and study uhm and i encourage everybody do it to do
- 39:28that themselves if if what i offer sparks that fire in in
- 39:33points you in the direction to want to learn something specific
- 39:36about that then i feel like that's time well spent and
- 39:38that's a great thing because uhm one of the things that i found
- 39:43so maybe like in liberating in a way was with heathenry is that
- 39:49it forces you to make away right there there's inclusion and
- 39:58there has to be inclusion there has to be involvement to be
- 40:01healed and you're not you can't just be i mean i guess you can
- 40:05you can be whatever you want you can do whatever you want anybody
- 40:07can but i feel like i've gotten the most out of heathenry by
- 40:11taking that initiative researching being apart of
- 40:14things making that taking that step maybe you know stepping out
- 40:18of my comfort zone in so many places in so many instances and
- 40:21dumb you know taking a lashing sometimes if i'm wrong and i and
- 40:26i have to admit it you know like that's a learning process you
- 40:29know and all that kind of stuff not being so proud to like did
- 40:35not be high you know corrected yep yeah 'cause guess what i
- 40:40mean everybody is human and and first of all you know out of out
- 40:43of the you know comparing myself to anybody else you know six
- 40:47years as a heathen versus people who have been doing it for as
- 40:50long as i've been alive like i i certainly have a lot to learn
- 40:54and i would welcome any information that they would be
- 40:56willing to share in those ways but the cool thing about it is
- 40:59that you know those types are the ones who like yeah you can
- 41:03learn but here's where you need to go to learn i would rather be
- 41:06given the tools and then pointed in the direction of where to go
- 41:10then to just be told everything and exactly yeah like i don't
- 41:15know what you feel or how you've experienced it yourself but i
- 41:17almost feel like too many people nowadays just want the answers
- 41:20handed to them like how do i do this how do i do that tell me
- 41:23what to do tell me tell me tell me it reminds me a lot of first
- 41:27before it continues that's you know what brings me earlier is
- 41:32that something i've come to really respect and appreciate
- 41:34about you and your channel is that you know you make it no
- 41:39you're not no authority you know you're not so what the college
- 41:43board or anything like that but you were on a sincere journey in
- 41:46a path and the fact you're not trying to teach anybody percy
- 41:51like directing them you're just assisting and supporting yeah
- 41:56but that also brings me to i used to practice karate and i
- 42:01remember when i first started like man i want to get that
- 42:04black ball i want to get that black vote but then yeah
- 42:07overtime when you start to learn these things you're like the
- 42:11black dots at the end of the road you want to enjoy the
- 42:14journey and really experience the different stages of growth
- 42:19and learning that you you know you seek to do yeah and if you
- 42:23don't see that then you're missing the entire point and
- 42:26it's it's an awful way to approach it but some people do
- 42:29it just like you know trying to be a heathen or whatever you
- 42:34practice or follow is this you know it's necessary to make
- 42:38mistakes it's necessary to not always be right all the time and
- 42:43it helps to be humbled corrected and it's it's what's important
- 42:47is that you take the lesson that you know you learn from that
- 42:49experience if it keeps repeating we only have yourself to blame
- 42:53though yes i i i don't think i will ever at least you know i'm
- 42:59never gonna be the master i'm always going to be the student
- 43:02UM at least that's kind of the way my in my own humble view of
- 43:06myself you know i may be i may i may exist for another few
- 43:10decades maybe UM as in as a human in this profane space and
- 43:16i may continue on as a heathen for that length of time and i'm
- 43:19you know thirty some odd forty years into my life and i'm a
- 43:22heat and all that time and i'm always going to be a student i'm
- 43:25always going to have that view of myself as a student because
- 43:27like you said that whole like martial arts black belt thing
- 43:31like that's a very modern structured approach to it
- 43:36rankings and things of that nature you look at like some
- 43:39'cause i i studied martial arts too as a kid going from like my
- 43:43youth into my teenage years and i was i i was originally
- 43:46introduced to martial arts and i was going through it was thai
- 43:52kwando what was the one like do you remember what you were were
- 43:56into at the time or did it was just karate just basic karate
- 43:59yeah so i went into like taekwondo and then that was when
- 44:03i was a kid it was high energy it was a lot of you know it got
- 44:07me into shape you know made me active and that sort of thing
- 44:12later on i was uh and i only did that for maybe if your i did i
- 44:15never made it to my my black belt you know what i mean but
- 44:20what i ended up getting into after that was chinese martial
- 44:24arts singing specifically which is one of like the three top
- 44:29internal martial arts china is weird like in that sort of way
- 44:33like they got like four thousand different styles of kung fu you
- 44:36know every region every every village had their own you know
- 44:40sub version like oh you know you met this one village and this
- 44:43guy over here you know he's he's he's drunken monkey style and
- 44:46you got the next village over that had to defeat the monk and
- 44:49then and there you know psycho snake and then you got you know
- 44:53psychedelic brain or whatever like they all have their own
- 44:57different styles of things it's wacky but uhm like singing was
- 45:02one of those combative martial arts that was developed for the
- 45:06chinese armies thousands upon thousands of years ago kind of
- 45:10falls into like the whole of you like tai chi and bagua and some
- 45:14of these other different like internal martial arts very very
- 45:17fascinating very but it was way different than the the thai
- 45:22kwando that i had learned and part of the difference about it
- 45:26was that there's no ranking system there's no belts that you
- 45:29get you just learn until you die basically like you just you know
- 45:35you study you study you learn new techniques you learn new
- 45:37techniques and then you know when you expire you expire
- 45:41there's no ranking system obviously the more you do it the
- 45:44better you get but that's like anything anything that's
- 45:47experienced based you know a thirty year master carpenter is
- 45:51better than an apprentice right so there's there's understanding
- 45:56of that right but then you wanna talk about like randomness like
- 46:01where do we where did where did this start and where do we end
- 46:03up play martial arts and stuff but i think it's just experience
- 46:10up you know what you're trying to study and what you're
- 46:14studying so yeah so yeah i think we're like we we started with
- 46:19this was you know learning and not trying to teach you know
- 46:23what i'm saying like there's there's definitely people out
- 46:25here who are teaching and who are providing like guided
- 46:30lessons and they are definitely in a position to do so not one
- 46:35of them and i'm not any in any way shape or form trying to
- 46:39portray myself as such and i'm glad that at least uhm you know
- 46:44you understand like from your own perspective like it's not
- 46:47that he's telling you what to do it seems sharing knowledge and
- 46:50kind of being like a here's a suggestion here's a way to do it
- 46:53and figure it out for yourself there's another a channel that i
- 46:58subscribe to ocean keltoi really really cool heathen content
- 47:05creator so for anybody listening right if you go to youtube and
- 47:09search ocean keltoi you're going to find some really cool stuff
- 47:12one of his things i think he ends it on every episode is find
- 47:15a way or make one right and that's what a lot of us i think
- 47:19you're out here are trying to do you there's so much that people
- 47:23want to be told well how do i do it right just tell me the way
- 47:27she like give me the answers and that's the easy part you're not
- 47:31going to learn anything if you don't find it yourself i feel
- 47:34yeah and part of finding your way is messing up and dripping
- 47:41and you know getting your knees bruised and and you know getting
- 47:46your nose bloodied and and just getting roughed up a little bit
- 47:50that's part of learning you know you ride a bike get on a bike
- 47:55right yeah exactly so one of the things we always like to do on
- 48:02our random even ramblings podcast is is discuss a random
- 48:07stanza from the harbor mall and patrick was kind enough to pick
- 48:12one right you had one that you uh wanted to have talked about
- 48:19here on the channel so every you know every episode that we put
- 48:24out here the random stands it is usually selected by myself
- 48:30'cause i'm usually doing these things by myself which is it's
- 48:32neat to have a guest on here to have this dialogue 'cause you
- 48:35know my views my insight it's always great to have a second
- 48:41view or or an additional view on things so we always went when
- 48:46when it stands is picked we've got multiple translations
- 48:49multiple versions of the jahmal that have been translated you
- 48:52know there's auden taylor there's oliver bray there's
- 48:55hollander terry bell you know bellows thorpe and then jackson
- 49:01crawford so we read from all of them or a lot of them i should
- 49:06say uhm so to start this off as we sort of wrap up the podcast
- 49:13as we started off gonna ask you patrick tell us which stands
- 49:19there were gonna be reading from the hall today or what we're
- 49:22going to be looking at today so what did you pick out for us
- 49:26it's gonna be stands at thirty four the hub mall alright so
- 49:30stands at thirty four and then did you have a you had a
- 49:35translation that you were going to be reading from or that i was
- 49:39going to ask if you wouldn't mind when you read us the first
- 49:41stanza or whatever that you picked from whatever translation
- 49:44if you know which one it is it's great if not that's fine yeah
- 49:48absolutely i believe it's actually the top one and that
- 49:50was second yeah uh it was out in taylor yes who fire away alright
- 50:01to a false friend the footpath wines know his house beyond the
- 50:06highway to assure friend there is a shortcut oh he lived a long
- 50:12way off awesome thank you and if you don't mind i will read from
- 50:19several other translations i'll let everybody know which stands
- 50:22out you know which which version of the stands were reading from
- 50:24but that was the auden auden taylor which is i like that
- 50:28translation i like the cadence that that translation offers to
- 50:33the stanzas it kind of just rolls off the tongue like
- 50:36there's a pattern there's there's there's a cadence to it
- 50:38that i really like uhm so i will go ahead and continue on with a
- 50:43few more so we'll go to the bellows translation and that one
- 50:49reads broke it in far is the road to affo though his house on
- 50:54the highway B but wide and straight is the way to a friend
- 51:00so far away he fair similar things that we hear it's just
- 51:05the verbiage is changed a little bit across the translation so
- 51:08much of what we see and repeated stands as the bray oliver bray
- 51:12translation reads long as the road sorry long as the round do
- 51:16a false friend leading in if he did well on the way but so far
- 51:22off fared with faithful friend straight are the roads and short
- 51:28uhm i like the hollander version as well which is to false friend
- 51:32a far away it is though his roof be reared by the road whose
- 51:38stench friend as straightway leads so far he have fared from
- 51:42the thorpe is another favorite of mine long is an indirect the
- 51:48way to a bad friends though by the road he did well but to a
- 51:53good friends the path lie direct though he'd be far away and then
- 51:59lastly i have the wanderers album all authored by jackson
- 52:02crawford and i'm going to read that one as well i usually end
- 52:07on that one jackson crawford 's translation of the stands up
- 52:10thirty four reads it's a long and crooked walk to a bad friend
- 52:14even if he lives nearby but it's an easy road to a good friend no
- 52:19matter how long the journey uhm so patrick you know as a guest
- 52:26here and since you picked this stands out what is what are some
- 52:30of the things that you know stand out to about this stanza
- 52:34what is it what is this saying to you we heard so many
- 52:37different ways of saying kind of the same thing uhm but what
- 52:41would you take away from this to me i thought about what stands a
- 52:47pretty much all day today and like late last night and this is
- 52:51something you know from experience that you know when
- 52:55you're trying to be loved to be liked you sometimes go to a
- 53:01false friend or someone who really doesn't have your best
- 53:05interest in mind sometimes myself i've neglected seeing
- 53:11that and i ended up hurting myself and being you know this
- 53:17entangled and toxicity that really didn't need to be but so
- 53:22desperate for approval and companionship you know sometimes
- 53:28that happens and sometimes we need to be reminded or as i have
- 53:32friends that i know i can count on and approaching them whether
- 53:37it be you know going to visit them or just merely speaking to
- 53:41them it's so much more simple no hidden agendas you know no
- 53:47falsehood just straight up being who you are and who you claim to
- 53:52be but sometimes people can put on a really neat persona and
- 53:56tell you the things that you want to hear but all in all a
- 54:00true and faithful friend is someone that's easily
- 54:02approachable just as well as a you know someone who teaches or
- 54:08someone who aids kind like you you're approachable someone who
- 54:11i can relate to and not have to hold back anything i have to say
- 54:16this to be who i am and that's what's important interesting i
- 54:21love the analysis you know i think it's especially important
- 54:25in modern times now because like you said there's so much that
- 54:31can be misconstrued from uh relationships that we developed
- 54:38online with people you know you can be anything you want to be
- 54:43online you can you can be anybody UM and then when
- 54:48somebody wants to get some wants to get to know you your true
- 54:51colors show and there's a lot of that out there you know there's
- 54:56a lot of seemingly decent people on the surface and then you get
- 55:00to talking to him you get to know him and then like wow there
- 55:02you know you're not what i thought you were you're not who
- 55:07i thought you were a man and so like you said before you know
- 55:11trying to get whether it's validation or approval or or
- 55:16things from people you know it's a lot of misses you know it's
- 55:20you know they say it's hit and miss it's it's a lot of miss
- 55:23when it comes to stuff online because again people can be
- 55:25whoever they want to be they can put on a persona that you know
- 55:32when you meet them in real time or real life away from their
- 55:36public image or or what they want to be perceived as it's
- 55:40night and day you know we see it a lot i like the fact that what
- 55:45the stands of mentions is that you know the road leading to the
- 55:50home of a good friend the person who you are nearest and dearest
- 55:54to even though the distance or the miles may be far the like
- 56:00the literal miles may be fast but the distance is not that
- 56:04makes sense it's perception in a way of the closest you can be
- 56:08you can be so close to people who you're not and in comparison
- 56:12you can have absolutely nothing to do with people who are
- 56:14literally right in your backyard uh because of that failure to
- 56:18connect and there's no you know i see a lot of folks that we see
- 56:23this a lot online too i noticed uh oh you know you're you know
- 56:26i'm looking for heathens in my area you know which i understand
- 56:30and i get the drive in the interest because you know even
- 56:34re and being a very tribally focused view on things like you
- 56:38want like minded folks nearby that you can physically connect
- 56:42with UM and the reality is that some people in some places of
- 56:47the world just don't have that kind of a of a of a reach there
- 56:51there's places around the world that just don't have a large if
- 56:56any presence of events that that sink or or approach things in
- 57:02the same or similar ways uhm so it's it's perception a lot you
- 57:08know you might be you know fifteen miles away from somebody
- 57:12who's has absolutely nothing to do with what you want and then
- 57:17you've got people that are you know fifty miles away that
- 57:19you're like i'll i'll get in the car all you order an uber or
- 57:23whatever i'll go see if it's that far away because we connect
- 57:26on that level you know uhm i think it goes above and beyond
- 57:32just the mirror description of how friendship works or feels
- 57:36nowadays over exactly we as again just living in modern
- 57:41times that the world was different in way before social
- 57:45media ever existed in way before there was this internet we have
- 57:48reaching i mean here you you're i'm in tennessee and urine like
- 57:51wherever and and we're having this conversation right now and
- 57:55we're talking in real time and we're talking about things that
- 57:57we can connect with and understand and the miles don't
- 58:01mean anything you know like in internal anything now it's like
- 58:06oh just because you're over here and i'm over there were still
- 58:09able to find ways to connect i don't think it takes away from
- 58:13any of the inherent even values where we talk about breath and
- 58:18being right to a tribe or having obligations tide to a tribe the
- 58:23real grassroots level of heathen rings still is important to
- 58:27cultivate into you know nurture but we can still have stuff like
- 58:34this and we can still develop great friendships and we can
- 58:37have wonderful interactions and learn a lot from each other you
- 58:41know regardless of the distance so far he may be right though
- 58:45the travels be many or the you know the we traveled many miles
- 58:49though you know we fare far from each other that sort of thing
- 58:53whatever the verbiage whatever the labels that we want to put
- 58:57to it whatever however we want to call or whatever we want to
- 59:01say it ultimately i think boils down to what are you willing to
- 59:07put into the relationship friendship you know what are you
- 59:10willing to do miles could mean nothing uhm i have some of my
- 59:17closest friends that live thirty forty miles away from me and i
- 59:21may not be able to see them as much as i would like but the
- 59:25distance usually doesn't matter it's we find a way you know find
- 59:29a way or make one when you do it's all the more special when
- 59:32you see them because this you know sometimes distance makes
- 59:35the heart grow fonder see yeah that's yeah that's the other
- 59:40thing too is sometimes that that separation i think that's one of
- 59:43the one of the hidden uhm i don't say blessings or or things
- 59:49that throughout this global pandemic over the last over year
- 59:55now right you know the people that have been forced to be
- 59:58apart because of local guidances or restrictions or or
- 1:00:04precedences and things that just you know totally rocked our
- 1:00:06world uhm it puts things in a whole different perspective and
- 1:00:11a whole different light and you can you can definitely say that
- 1:00:17that separation or that distance does change your perception and
- 1:00:22makes what you have with somebody seemed that much more
- 1:00:25precious and that much more valuable because like wow like
- 1:00:28we didn't you know we took advantage of the fact that we
- 1:00:30could meet together all the time and we didn't do it and now here
- 1:00:34we are you know a year later and it's like wow we haven't seen
- 1:00:37each other for so long and because of what you know because
- 1:00:39of something that was outside of our immediate control and that
- 1:00:43we were just kind of thrown into and had to figure out a way to
- 1:00:46survive through and make a way through so i think you're set i
- 1:00:52think your analysis of it was really cool patrick i like the
- 1:00:56UM you know insight that you brought to it and i hope our
