- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.
- 0:15Speaker 2: We're back in.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Good Morning Football, and us here in New York are
- 0:17Speaker 3: very very excited for this Person's been a huge inspiration.
- 0:20Speaker 2: When I was in high school.
- 0:21Speaker 3: My friends and I used to blast his song whose
- 0:24Speaker 3: title I can't say, in our cars and scream the lyrics,
- 0:26Speaker 3: then go into our basements and watch Judgment Night. I mean,
- 0:29Speaker 3: this is an incredible, incredible perform.
- 0:31Speaker 2: There is there a way for us to reference the
- 0:33Speaker 2: title of the song. We're not getting in trouble.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I can name a few players in the league very
- 0:37Speaker 3: accurate about that, but I won't do it.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Guy, this is Dennis Larry. Look at I just want
- 0:43Speaker 2: to say this. I'm a big fan of the show.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I can't believe I'm finally on here. I don't think
- 0:48Speaker 2: we've talked about Jerry Jones and Deon Sanders. I'm not
- 0:52Speaker 2: anymore this morning, or this week or this year. Everybody
- 0:55Speaker 2: talks about the Cowboys all the time. They're never winning
- 0:59Speaker 2: another Super Bowl. Let's stop talking about them.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Why are we still talking and they last one in
- 1:07Speaker 3: Super Bowl in ninety five?
- 1:08Speaker 2: What were you doing in ninety five. I was ninety five.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I was still bemoaning the fact that the Patriots sucked
- 1:15Speaker 2: and that they're you know, I don't don't even get
- 1:17Speaker 2: me started. The Red Sox hadn't won. It was we
- 1:20Speaker 2: the Boston sports fans were still starving, I know at
- 1:23Speaker 2: that time. But hey, we've moved forward, right, you move
- 1:27Speaker 2: forward and leaps and bounce. We've been in ninety five.
- 1:29Speaker 2: We were probably talking about Deon Sanders and the Cowboys,
- 1:32Speaker 2: Jerry Jones, and guess what here we are talking about
- 1:36Speaker 2: still talking about all.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Right, we're gonna be talking about Going Dutch, which is
- 1:39Speaker 3: dennis new comedy series on Fox.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Thank god, we got to move on to anything else
- 1:43Speaker 2: is Deon Sanders in that show on Fox.
- 1:48Speaker 3: You're gonna let Michael Stran's involved, Peter knows everyone involved, Dennis.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It's literally I was standing outside. Why you guys were
- 1:54Speaker 2: talking about Deon Sanders and Jerry Jones. I'm talking to
- 1:58Speaker 2: one of your crew guys, and he goes, hey, you know,
- 1:59Speaker 2: Jerry Jones just did an acting gig in Landman, Philly
- 2:03Speaker 2: about Thornton. I'm like, you're kidding me? And now I
- 2:05Speaker 2: can't even watch that show. Without eventually seeing Jerry Joe.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yes, and now he's acting like he's gonna hire me
- 2:11Speaker 3: on to be the head coach.
- 2:12Speaker 2: It's like, people know you as a Patriots fan. Yes,
- 2:16Speaker 2: I heard you have an NFC team too, Yes, what
- 2:18Speaker 2: do you do? So when I was when I was
- 2:21Speaker 2: I'm way older than you guys. When I was young,
- 2:24Speaker 2: my me and my older brother shared a room. This
- 2:26Speaker 2: is in the late sixties, before the merger actually, and
- 2:31Speaker 2: you know, the Patriots sucked. They sucked far so my brother,
- 2:35Speaker 2: because he got to set the rules because he was older,
- 2:38Speaker 2: he said, you know what, I think we should each
- 2:39Speaker 2: get to pick a national conference, national focal team, you know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: before the merger, so that that we have somebody to
- 2:46Speaker 2: root for. So he picked the Colts, who ended up
- 2:48Speaker 2: eventually in the and I picked the Packers. So there's
- 2:52Speaker 2: always been that, you know, that little side. I'm really
- 2:56Speaker 2: a Patriots fan, but I have this little Packers thing.
- 2:58Speaker 2: My son is predominantly Packers that she was growing up. Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 2: but anyways, that's all changed now. I mean, that's that's
- 3:04Speaker 2: why people when I I say this to my Boston
- 3:07Speaker 2: sports friends, I'm I'm a huge Bruins fan. I'm actually
- 3:11Speaker 2: the narrator of their documentary series on Nessenale. Cool. But
- 3:15Speaker 2: but we in Boston, we have, literally and with football,
- 3:19Speaker 2: nothing to complain about. You want to talk about Mike Rabel,
- 3:21Speaker 2: I think it's great. You want to talk about Drake
- 3:24Speaker 2: May fantastic? I do I care? I do care? I
- 3:27Speaker 2: do I care that we're losing. Now you know why?
- 3:29Speaker 2: We had two decades of insanity and we were in
- 3:34Speaker 2: the Super Bowl almost every year, right and across the
- 3:37Speaker 2: sports board, Boston fans have nothing to complain about. I
- 3:40Speaker 2: don't think we should be allowed to that is, yeah,
- 3:43Speaker 2: So I do I root for the Patriots? Yeah? Do
- 3:45Speaker 2: they suck? They did suck? Do I care? Not? Really?
- 3:48Speaker 3: I'm happy Jamie get in here.
- 3:53Speaker 4: What a healthy sound, What a healthy and sound take
- 3:56Speaker 4: on the New England Patriots and their fans. Like it's
- 3:58Speaker 4: so true because for a while, I was like that
- 4:00Speaker 4: kid with the poster who's like, ever since he was born,
- 4:02Speaker 4: he'd want the Boston and won a title and like
- 4:04Speaker 4: every sports is alternated, where is that kid now? Speaking
- 4:08Speaker 4: of running it back with a guy that played for
- 4:10Speaker 4: your team. The Patriots hired Mike Rabel. There he's back
- 4:12Speaker 4: in the building.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So You're good, You're fine.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Do you think he can fix this thing after a
- 4:16Speaker 4: couple of years away from the stage and the trophy presentation.
- 4:19Speaker 2: No, we're five years away from doing anything. I mean,
- 4:24Speaker 2: maybe Vrabel will solve it, but I doubt it. I mean,
- 4:27Speaker 2: we need a complete rebuild, so we may have a
- 4:29Speaker 2: quarterback who knows right and who cares, don't care. I'm
- 4:33Speaker 2: so I'm so happy and satisfied. I'm very excited to
- 4:38Speaker 2: watch Bill Belichick destroy college football and become a champion. There.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I just I think that's more likely than the Patriots
- 4:45Speaker 2: even making the playoffs.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Do you think Belichick went in a championship more likely
- 4:49Speaker 3: the Vrabel?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Oh? I think I think Belichick slaughters college lot. Belichick
- 4:53Speaker 2: is a genius. By the way, Belichick can do anything.
- 4:56Speaker 2: You've seen him on television. He's fantastic. He can do anything.
- 4:59Speaker 2: So again, even if Bill wanted to retire and just
- 5:02Speaker 2: fish on Nintuck And I'm so happy, guys, and so satisfied.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I mean, I'm still a football fanatic. I watched football
- 5:09Speaker 2: like crazy, but as a Patriots and I'm.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Like, who cares. I absolutely love your passion for sports
- 5:16Speaker 5: and football, your Patriots. I know, as an entertainer, you've
- 5:20Speaker 5: been around a lot of sports folks, a lot of
- 5:22Speaker 5: players and coaches. You've got an encounter that you'll never forget,
- 5:25Speaker 5: you know, in that time.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I've had so many great ones, I mean,
- 5:29Speaker 2: just insane ones over the years, you know. And and
- 5:33Speaker 2: you know, one of my best friends in life is
- 5:35Speaker 2: Cam Neely ended up becoming a Hockey Hall of Famer
- 5:38Speaker 2: and I actually was at that induction service. That was amazing.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But I actually, I don't know if you guys know this,
- 5:44Speaker 2: but I did tell the person who was doing the
- 5:47Speaker 2: pre show. So one of my best friends is Lenny Clark,
- 5:49Speaker 2: the actor and comedian, and Lenny became very close friends
- 5:52Speaker 2: with Bill Belichick as the Patriots Dynasty was happening. So
- 5:56Speaker 2: I got to meet Bill through Lenny and he was
- 5:59Speaker 2: a big fan of Rescue Me, and he said, do
- 6:01Speaker 2: you mind if I come to visit this set? I said,
- 6:04Speaker 2: how would you like to do a cameo? Right? So
- 6:06Speaker 2: he was like, oh, that'd be great. So we wrote
- 6:07Speaker 2: this little bit with him in phill Esposito the Bruins Legend,
- 6:11Speaker 2: and he said, I don't want to just come and
- 6:13Speaker 2: do the cameo. I want to come and spend an
- 6:15Speaker 2: entire day at the set. And I was like, Bill,
- 6:17Speaker 2: it's really boring. People don't understand. It's really boring. He goes,
- 6:21Speaker 2: I don't care. It won't be boring for me. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, it's going to be boring. So he came.
- 6:25Speaker 2: His cameo took like half an hour. So we shot
- 6:28Speaker 2: that and then I said, you can hang out with
- 6:30Speaker 2: us by the monitors if you want, because you know,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I was also the co showrunner and my writing partner
- 6:35Speaker 2: was the director of most of the episodes, so I
- 6:38Speaker 2: watched them. He had the little notebook that he pulls
- 6:40Speaker 2: out on the field make notes. During the game, he
- 6:42Speaker 2: had the little notebook and he kept pulling out the
- 6:44Speaker 2: notebook and making notes. And at lunchtime, you know, it's
- 6:48Speaker 2: like six hours into the day, he was like, so,
- 6:50Speaker 2: now the guys, when the guys come in with all
- 6:52Speaker 2: the equipment, when you guys call cut, what now? Who
- 6:54Speaker 2: are those guys? Now? I saw those the lighting guys
- 6:56Speaker 2: going up, and he kept asking questions and we went
- 6:59Speaker 2: back to work and he stayed for another six hours,
- 7:01Speaker 2: and at the end of the day we had dinner.
- 7:03Speaker 2: He literally peppered me with questions about the team aspect,
- 7:07Speaker 2: like who does this, when did they do it? Who
- 7:10Speaker 2: tells them? How do they know it was? Yeah? Like
- 7:13Speaker 2: he literally is such such a curious guy about the
- 7:16Speaker 2: psychology of the set. Leadership's the boss, That's why he
- 7:21Speaker 2: was talking to the quarterback.
- 7:23Speaker 3: But he was interested in the practice squad and the
- 7:25Speaker 3: trainers and all that stuff down.
- 7:27Speaker 2: That's really that tells you why somebody is a great coach,
- 7:30Speaker 2: because especially in football, man, I mean any team sport,
- 7:33Speaker 2: but especially in football, because there's so many people, so
- 7:36Speaker 2: many squads, right, I mean, that's why I love Like, listen,
- 7:41Speaker 2: you can't fault people. But when I'm watching head coaches
- 7:43Speaker 2: who have their face buried in eric are calling the
- 7:46Speaker 2: place and covering their mouth. But you watch Belichick. One
- 7:49Speaker 2: of the most famous things I remember Belichick talking about
- 7:51Speaker 2: was in that comeback against Seattle. Seattle think when when
- 7:57Speaker 2: they did the behind the scenes stuff of that, he
- 8:00Speaker 2: was watching Pete Carroll's body language. Yes, before they put
- 8:05Speaker 2: in their squad. This isn't Malcolm Butler, Yeah, the Malcolm Butler.
- 8:09Speaker 2: He remember that he didn't call time up? Remember, were like,
- 8:11Speaker 2: why is he not colle controversial, and he was just
- 8:13Speaker 2: staring there and when they interviewed me, so I was
- 8:16Speaker 2: watching the body language of Pete Carroll and their sideline
- 8:20Speaker 2: now to see that.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Yeah, he said something just didn't seem right over.
- 8:24Speaker 2: It didn't seem right And that was his gut right
- 8:27Speaker 2: because his eyes were on the field instead of on
- 8:29Speaker 2: a laminated piece of calling play. That drives me nuts.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Well, Peter Belichick probably the best coach ever.
- 8:36Speaker 2: What about the best football movie?
- 8:37Speaker 1: Well, this is okay, so polarizing movie that you were
- 8:40Speaker 1: in about eleven years ago amongst football people.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I love Draft Day, he does.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I think Draft Day is awesome. Take a look at
- 8:46Speaker 1: this clips from our shows, from our show in September,
- 8:48Speaker 1: not knowing you would be on four months later. Here
- 8:51Speaker 1: was me in September talking about a movie that I
- 8:53Speaker 1: love that you are a featured part of.
- 8:54Speaker 2: I love Draft Day. Come on, I love Draft Day.
- 8:59Speaker 2: People hate Draft Day.
- 9:00Speaker 1: People say it's not realistic, it's absurd, it's so dumb,
- 9:04Speaker 1: it's dramatic.
- 9:05Speaker 2: There is no better sitting.
- 9:07Speaker 1: On a plane flipping through the options and getting lost
- 9:10Speaker 1: for two and a half hours than the movie Draft Day.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I love Drafts.
- 9:14Speaker 1: A true fan I think a little and I tell
- 9:18Speaker 1: you something that's really like Draft week, I'll watch it
- 9:21Speaker 1: and it gets.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Me a lot of cool a lot of people. It's
- 9:23Speaker 2: like watching a Christmas movie.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It feels like I'm watching it some wonderful life.
- 9:27Speaker 4: This is it?
- 9:27Speaker 1: So that is I'm sure people stop you all time
- 9:30Speaker 1: and do you know how divisive this movie is?
- 9:32Speaker 2: And football diehards who do not like it. I don't
- 9:35Speaker 2: care because I'm I'm selfishly when I did this movie.
- 9:38Speaker 2: First of all, I'm a sports fanatic, as you guys know, right,
- 9:41Speaker 2: I'm a huge Western fan. I'm a huge Kevin cost
- 9:44Speaker 2: fan because of that, but also huge sports movie guy. Right,
- 9:47Speaker 2: You're not going to get a more iconic actor in
- 9:48Speaker 2: the history of cinema who's done more sport about it?
- 9:51Speaker 2: Feel the dreams. They have a phone call saying cost
- 9:54Speaker 2: is going to do a football movie. They want you
- 9:56Speaker 2: to play the coach. Right and Ivan Wrightman famous directors
- 10:00Speaker 2: that pastime you know is going to direct. I'm like,
- 10:02Speaker 2: I'm in. They were like, well, they want to send
- 10:04Speaker 2: you the script. I'm like, no, I'm in. Well, don't
- 10:06Speaker 2: you want to meet Kevin? I had never met Kevin
- 10:09Speaker 2: and Ivan and I'm like, no, I'm in. Tell Ivan
- 10:11Speaker 2: and Kevin I'm in. I don't care because a football
- 10:14Speaker 2: movie with Kevin Costa, Like, when am I going to
- 10:16Speaker 2: have the opportunity to do that again. Meanwhile, Kevin is
- 10:19Speaker 2: the nicest guy, a total pro. We had a blast.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I know people get caught up, but it's not realistic.
- 10:25Speaker 2: It's a movie. It's a movie. Okay, what are you
- 10:29Speaker 2: talking about? And Ken Costner's great in it, you know, yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 2: And I'll tell you behind the scenes story there. Oh yes,
- 10:35Speaker 2: come on that people don't know about. You know. I
- 10:38Speaker 2: have the super Bowl ring because I'm the ex coach
- 10:39Speaker 2: of the Dallas Cowboys, and I thank god I was.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I didn't have to talk to Jerry Jones to do
- 10:45Speaker 2: the movie. But they made up a realistic Dallas cobby.
- 10:49Speaker 2: You know you see that thing in the movie. And
- 10:50Speaker 2: I said to the prop guys, like, I need to
- 10:52Speaker 2: get one of these. When we wrapped. I'm not going
- 10:54Speaker 2: to sell it. I'm just going to keep it. And
- 10:55Speaker 2: they were like, we made an agreement with the NFL
- 10:58Speaker 2: that we would not let us even a fake Super
- 11:01Speaker 2: Bowl ring get out there. You have to give it back.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And at the end of the movie. Yet I don't
- 11:05Speaker 2: steal things. Some movies I asked for and I said
- 11:08Speaker 2: to the product, I have to have this. It's like,
- 11:09Speaker 2: you know what, take it? So I have it. It's
- 11:11Speaker 2: on my desk. You got a Cowboys throw around. Wow,
- 11:15Speaker 2: it's engraved, you know, Coach Pen you know I love
- 11:19Speaker 2: It's like it's my my thing from that move. I
- 11:22Speaker 2: had a blast on that movie. I bet Jenny we
- 11:25Speaker 2: we just love how.
- 11:26Speaker 4: I love these stories and how passionate Dennis is about
- 11:28Speaker 4: all this stuff. The other topic besides sports, besides Boss's sports,
- 11:32Speaker 4: the fact that you've a foundation right now that can
- 11:34Speaker 4: directly impact and help people that are just nearby our
- 11:37Speaker 4: studio here in LA. The wildfires are going on. It's
- 11:40Speaker 4: it's affecting a lot of people here in Los Angeles.
- 11:43Speaker 4: You've a foundation that supports firefighters nationwide. Tell us more
- 11:48Speaker 4: about that and how impertinent it can be today.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Yeah. So I started the Larry Firefighters Foundation twenty five
- 11:54Speaker 2: years ago because my cousin, Jerry Lucy became a firefighter
- 11:58Speaker 2: and Worcester, mass which is where I'm from. UH and
- 12:00Speaker 2: another uh, one of our best friends from growing up
- 12:04Speaker 2: was also in the same department and six. So those
- 12:06Speaker 2: firefighters died in a fired downtown on Worcester and December third,
- 12:11Speaker 2: nineteen ninety nine. I started the foundation to help the
- 12:13Speaker 2: families of the six firefighters because there were seventeen kids
- 12:16Speaker 2: left behind. I have good friends in the FDNY who
- 12:19Speaker 2: went up to help dig out the bodies from that warehouse,
- 12:23Speaker 2: and when nine to eleven happened two years later, the
- 12:26Speaker 2: Wooster Fire Department was one of the first groups that
- 12:28Speaker 2: came down here. Anyways, body one of my best friends,
- 12:31Speaker 2: Terry Quinn from the fdn Y, who was the technical
- 12:34Speaker 2: advisor and rescue me. He said, you have to make
- 12:37Speaker 2: the foundation nationwide. So we went national and I just
- 12:40Speaker 2: want to say this the reason I have the foundation.
- 12:43Speaker 2: And twenty five years later, every year we get more
- 12:46Speaker 2: requests to help more departments because the funding has dissipated.
- 12:50Speaker 2: In the last twenty five years, we helped departments as
- 12:53Speaker 2: big as the FDNY down to local small departments, and
- 12:56Speaker 2: the problem is always the same. They're all getting their
- 12:58Speaker 2: budget cuts every year because they never go on strike.
- 13:01Speaker 2: So of course it makes sense for politicians and city
- 13:04Speaker 2: governments to say we're going to cut the fire fire
- 13:06Speaker 2: fighting budget because they won't leave work, They'll still go
- 13:09Speaker 2: to work. I like to wait till after these big
- 13:12Speaker 2: tragic events are over before people start blaming and pointing fingers.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I do know this about the LA Department. This is
- 13:18Speaker 2: a fact. They have been understaffed for ages. They have
- 13:21Speaker 2: vehicles sitting that can't be repaired because they don't have
- 13:24Speaker 2: enough money to hire them mechanics back to fix them.
- 13:27Speaker 2: As the wildfires have been growing over the last ten years,
- 13:29Speaker 2: that departments have been getting understaffed continuing every years. That's
- 13:34Speaker 2: a definite problem. We are very proud of the fact
- 13:37Speaker 2: that we take your money as it's donated every year,
- 13:40Speaker 2: within six months to a year, we have turned it
- 13:41Speaker 2: into literally vehicles, training facilities, equipment that the firefighters put
- 13:47Speaker 2: to work right away. And the other weird tie in
- 13:49Speaker 2: is on this show. Every year we have an event
- 13:52Speaker 2: called we Can Be Heroes just for one day here
- 13:54Speaker 2: in New York where citizens can pay. It's expensive, you
- 13:58Speaker 2: pay a lot of money, but you get to be
- 13:59Speaker 2: a firefighter for a day at the FDNY Training Academy
- 14:02Speaker 2: with FDNY firefighters and celebrities. And every year, because of
- 14:06Speaker 2: the team aspect of it, we've had NFL players, we've
- 14:09Speaker 2: had the commissioner come and get dressed up as a
- 14:12Speaker 2: firefighter for a day. Well, Curtis Martin, Michael Strahan, Harrison Smith,
- 14:18Speaker 2: I'm forgetting guys on, Nick Mangol, Tony Gonzalez. Tony's been
- 14:22Speaker 2: there multiple years. They come every year and these It's
- 14:24Speaker 2: interesting to watch NFL players do this because most of
- 14:28Speaker 2: them are still in shape. Curtis Martin can still and
- 14:31Speaker 2: they come and they're very overwhelmed by how difficult the
- 14:35Speaker 2: job is, but also by the firefighters, the men and
- 14:38Speaker 2: the women that are training them that day. Yes, because
- 14:40Speaker 2: it is teamwork. It's about teamwork. That's why we have
- 14:43Speaker 2: civilians donate and do it. But I guarantee you you
- 14:46Speaker 2: give us your money within six months to a year.
- 14:49Speaker 2: You actually see videos of departments across the country using
- 14:53Speaker 2: what we bought for them. That's an incredible pitch.
- 14:55Speaker 3: You watch that, you want to immediately part of it.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Leary Firefighters, Dot Org, Dennis, you do it all firefighters
- 15:01Speaker 3: and now soldiers. You play an Army colonel. Right now
- 15:03Speaker 3: in a new series going Dutch, we have a c
- 15:06Speaker 3: right now.
- 15:06Speaker 2: We're going to roll. It'd be very fun if we
- 15:08Speaker 2: rolled this clip.
- 15:08Speaker 3: And it was just Jerry Jones and dancing. Let's go
- 15:11Speaker 3: run a new clip rom going Dutch on Fox.
- 15:15Speaker 2: That would be odd.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I wasn't expecting to meet Maggie's old man.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Thanks for hosting me on your bit. It's not hosting you.
- 15:21Speaker 2: You are not some Swedish au pair. I'm bringing in
- 15:23Speaker 2: to take care of the baby. Why are you on
