- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat your podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear for
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt first like go farther, stay longer. All right, everybody,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Holy God, there's no way we're gonna covered this all
- 0:42Speaker 1: too much to cover because listen, man, if you think
- 0:44Speaker 1: about how we gotta cover, like how there's bass How
- 0:47Speaker 1: there's a professional bass fisherment from Australia. Yep, that's like
- 0:52Speaker 1: that's like two hours since they don't even have basket
- 0:56Speaker 1: and he's here. He's the first Australian to ever come
- 0:58Speaker 1: in here. How do you promise your last names? Still
- 1:04Speaker 1: kind of that's kind of hard looking at it. Not
- 1:07Speaker 1: many people get it right. It's like Yacolmson and you're
- 1:10Speaker 1: the first like big time winning Australia bass in the US. Yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 1: so you're the first. Give me to give me the
- 1:16Speaker 1: superlative the first. What um, I'll be the first Australian
- 1:21Speaker 1: to ever make it to the top one hundred guys
- 1:23Speaker 1: in the world in America? If who you know like
- 1:27Speaker 1: in baseball, right, you're like probably American. If you're not American,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I think you're Dominican in professional baseball. Isn't that like
- 1:35Speaker 1: a big that that country has a huge footprint in
- 1:38Speaker 1: American baseball in Puerto Rico. So lay it out for me.
- 1:43Speaker 1: In bass, it's like Americans Japanese would be second. No,
- 1:47Speaker 1: Japanese be the Dominican. Yeah, I think I knew that
- 1:49Speaker 1: because the hooks, well, just everything attention to detail, and
- 1:54Speaker 1: they have the same like similar suckit, same bass they
- 1:57Speaker 1: have like to have the set up in it's as
- 2:00Speaker 1: big in the tackle industry and the fishing as well.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I'm seeing all the manufacturers that are Japanese the large
- 2:06Speaker 1: mouth bass over on that island in Japan. Yeah, it's awesome.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I went to Lake Biwa in two thousand and eighteen.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Actually the world record is from Georgia and Lake Biwa
- 2:16Speaker 1: in Japan. It's tied because you're trafically sad day for
- 2:20Speaker 1: America we get beat by the Japanese on our own fish.
- 2:25Speaker 1: But I do that and that that right now, there's
- 2:27Speaker 1: a bunch of from Japan that that that just they
- 2:30Speaker 1: kill it over here. They're coming over and they beat everyone. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 1: it's big, But for me it was because the reason
- 2:39Speaker 1: it was different because we don't have large mouth or
- 2:41Speaker 1: smallmouth or anything like that in Australia. So I chased
- 2:44Speaker 1: like a whole different species of fish my whole life.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So you don't have large mouth bass. It would be
- 2:49Speaker 1: like if someone will tell you fishing for over there.
- 2:51Speaker 1: It'd be like if someone trout fished Montana their entire
- 2:54Speaker 1: life and then they're like, I'm gonna go start tournament
- 2:56Speaker 1: fishing and then made it to the top level in
- 2:58Speaker 1: like four or five years and the country. I mean,
- 3:02Speaker 1: think about that. I just assume you guys have dumped
- 3:04Speaker 1: a bunch of large mouth bass in your late we had.
- 3:09Speaker 1: What the reason I made it is because we have
- 3:11Speaker 1: like a more diverse fish. We we we don't really have
- 3:14Speaker 1: a fish that's like Australia wide, like in these little regions.
- 3:17Speaker 1: We have a fish that's called an Australian bass, and
- 3:20Speaker 1: it's probably the closest thing to like a hybrid striper
- 3:24Speaker 1: kind of cross. But then we have like murray cod,
- 3:26Speaker 1: which are in a certain region where I live. We
- 3:28Speaker 1: have barramundy which live in the northern regions, and I
- 3:32Speaker 1: kind of got good at like catching all of them,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and then if you rolled all of them into general Yeah,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I just fished everywhere like Australians because we don't have
- 3:42Speaker 1: that one fish, like a large mouth that is countrywide.
- 3:45Speaker 1: We would have boats or fish out of kayaks whatever
- 3:48Speaker 1: for this species and then we would drive a few
- 3:50Speaker 1: hours or ten hours fish with a barramundy up north
- 3:53Speaker 1: and so that's like normal fishing here, yeah kind of.
- 3:57Speaker 1: But then if you guys are the exception, like most
- 3:59Speaker 1: people fish fish all kinds of ship. Yeah, and we
- 4:02Speaker 1: the thing that we get mistaken for a tournament anglers.
- 4:05Speaker 1: You and like you said, you spoke to a guy
- 4:07Speaker 1: that had just fish for bass or whatever, but generally
- 4:11Speaker 1: we most bass professional anglers. That's how we all started.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Like if you talk to most of them, they fish
- 4:17Speaker 1: for a little bit of everything and just got a
- 4:18Speaker 1: passionate and then but there's something about a large mouth
- 4:22Speaker 1: bass and that's what it did to me. Like if
- 4:24Speaker 1: you rolled all the species in Australia that I competed
- 4:27Speaker 1: with into a ball, it would make a large mouth bass.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So when I wasn't. Yeah, it's like their attitude and
- 4:40Speaker 1: the way they fish, Like when I first got the
- 4:42Speaker 1: opportunity to come to America and I and I fish
- 4:44Speaker 1: for him. My I just got lit up. I was like,
- 4:47Speaker 1: this is the coolest fish I've ever seen in my
- 4:50Speaker 1: life because it adapts so well. It does everything. If
- 4:53Speaker 1: there's a piece of water, it lives in there, it
- 4:55Speaker 1: adapts to that bait. That the way the setup is,
- 4:58Speaker 1: whatever it is, it's just to live, survive and be
- 5:01Speaker 1: the perfect predator in that environment. And there's not a
- 5:04Speaker 1: ton of fish that do that. They need all the
- 5:06Speaker 1: perfect things to be able to survive at large masses,
- 5:09Speaker 1: Like put me here and I'll adapt and do whatever's
- 5:11Speaker 1: going on. Thinking about talking to you, they must have
- 5:17Speaker 1: like some You must have grown up by some big
- 5:19Speaker 1: gas reservoir full of large mouth bass in Australia and
- 5:22Speaker 1: never caught one until two thousand and ten. And then
- 5:25Speaker 1: in two thousand and fourteen I made it to the
- 5:27Speaker 1: top hunt of guys in the world in the US.
- 5:33Speaker 1: What was that that opportunity that got you to the stage?
- 5:37Speaker 1: So um in two In the year two thousand, a
- 5:40Speaker 1: guy in Australia started tournaments up similar to America. And
- 5:43Speaker 1: so I was like fourteen years old, and I went
- 5:47Speaker 1: to it because I was getting into bass fishing in
- 5:49Speaker 1: my local lakes where I'd ride my bike to there
- 5:51Speaker 1: to catch and was bass, so I was kind of
- 5:53Speaker 1: that was my sort of species. And then they had
- 5:56Speaker 1: this tournament, so I went and watched it at like
- 5:58Speaker 1: fourteen years old, and they hoarded American bass boats. They
- 6:01Speaker 1: had like these bass boats and I was like wow,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and they came in and weighed them in and I'm like,
- 6:06Speaker 1: this is cool. And so I started fishing as a
- 6:09Speaker 1: co angler and just kind of got addicted to it.
- 6:12Speaker 1: My mom drove me three hours to a lake, I
- 6:15Speaker 1: fished it. I came fourth and won five dollars, and
- 6:18Speaker 1: like they gave me the check, and I was kind
- 6:20Speaker 1: of like, I'm doing this for the rest of my life.
- 6:23Speaker 1: This is it. And that's what I kind of did.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And then um, those tournaments turned into pretty big tournaments
- 6:29Speaker 1: where the like we have the bass Master Classic that's
- 6:32Speaker 1: in America, that's worth a half million dollars and all that.
- 6:35Speaker 1: We had a grand Final and the prize was expenses
- 6:38Speaker 1: paid trip to the US to see if they could
- 6:41Speaker 1: get someone from Australia to compete in the US. But
- 6:45Speaker 1: you never caught about No, I never called to us
- 6:47Speaker 1: it was kind of weird. Well, what it was is
- 6:49Speaker 1: like we're watching ESPN and Fox Sports, watching bass Master,
- 6:53Speaker 1: learning the techniques, reading the magazines and applying them in Australia.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So I'm just it was like an exchange. You're just
- 7:03Speaker 1: like America was always ahead of the game and everything,
- 7:05Speaker 1: so you're just trying to get fed the information. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: so you're watching then guys win a hundred grand making
- 7:13Speaker 1: a living, the trucks, the boats. Then you're seeing the
- 7:15Speaker 1: weigh ins with fifty people in a stadium screaming and
- 7:20Speaker 1: the guys driving in with bass boats. So you're like
- 7:23Speaker 1: as a kid, then growing up you're like, wow, this
- 7:26Speaker 1: is like this is where I want to be and
- 7:29Speaker 1: so and what it is is like in Australia, you
- 7:34Speaker 1: can be the best goal for the best motocross, right,
- 7:36Speaker 1: are the best anything, and you you'll have to work
- 7:40Speaker 1: full time in your tackle store or your golf shop
- 7:44Speaker 1: unless you move to America. And then if you come
- 7:48Speaker 1: to America you can be a superstar and make a
- 7:50Speaker 1: living out of it. So I basically fished and competed
- 7:54Speaker 1: from when I was sixteen years old to when I
- 7:56Speaker 1: was twenty five, and then when I was one, that
- 8:00Speaker 1: Grand Final, and that got me the expenses paid trip
- 8:02Speaker 1: to the US. They'd never been out of Australia before
- 8:06Speaker 1: in my life. I've never been on an aeroplane. We
- 8:09Speaker 1: flew flew into the US, and you know, in Australia
- 8:13Speaker 1: fishing and hunting and all of that my whole life.
- 8:16Speaker 1: It was kind of like, it's a very niche looked
- 8:18Speaker 1: down on kind of thing. You were never just spoke
- 8:21Speaker 1: openly about being a angler or a hunter because it
- 8:25Speaker 1: was very it's very I don't know how to put it.
- 8:27Speaker 1: But you had to be careful about who you said
- 8:29Speaker 1: it to because they might be like, look down on
- 8:32Speaker 1: y'all say something about it. And when I came to America,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I was like hunters and fishermen and bus just seeing
- 8:39Speaker 1: the stores, I was like, this is where I'm supposed
- 8:41Speaker 1: to live, Like, this is where I'm supposed to be.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We'll come background. So I got one more question for
- 8:47Speaker 1: now and then we're gonna take care of some things.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But when you finally caught your first large mouth bass
- 8:52Speaker 1: after watching people your whole life and rena but you're like, oh,
- 8:55Speaker 1: so that's one of those yeah, yeah, it was. It was.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It was incredible. Like, we went to Lake Fork in
- 9:02Speaker 1: Texas and they took us out there and we started
- 9:05Speaker 1: catching them on techniques that we used in Australia and
- 9:08Speaker 1: just grabbing one and looking at it and the way in.
- 9:11Speaker 1: At the same lake, we caught him up shallow in
- 9:13Speaker 1: two feet, and then the next day we caught him
- 9:15Speaker 1: in thirty feet on different techniques and we fished. I
- 9:19Speaker 1: went and fished Lake Mead and so it was just
- 9:22Speaker 1: like it was thirty You could see the bottom in
- 9:24Speaker 1: thirty feet of water. And I did really well in
- 9:26Speaker 1: that tournament, which is what gave me opportunity to basically
- 9:30Speaker 1: I came second as a coenglow. Once some money, I
- 9:32Speaker 1: met fred Ron Bannus, who was an Elite Series angler.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I got to talk to him. I saw the anglers
- 9:38Speaker 1: and at that time I said, Okay, I'm going to
- 9:41Speaker 1: go home and like sell everything I own and try
- 9:44Speaker 1: and actually make this. And yeah, I was insane for
- 9:48Speaker 1: thinking at the time. When I look back, I'm like,
- 9:50Speaker 1: what were you think? And this is that's ridiculous because
- 9:53Speaker 1: our our fishing is so small in our lakes. You
- 9:57Speaker 1: can I got to learn them really well, and they're
- 9:59Speaker 1: all a little bit similar where here. I went from
- 10:01Speaker 1: Lake May to the Red River or like southern in
- 10:05Speaker 1: Oklahoma or Lake Fork, and it was just that every
- 10:08Speaker 1: lake was so different. But that's kind of why I
- 10:11Speaker 1: loved it. So it was just so much different stuff
- 10:13Speaker 1: to fish. Also joined by are you know are you
- 10:16Speaker 1: ready to the writer Chuck Polunic. I think it's like
- 10:19Speaker 1: if you do the you know, one of those ancestry deals,
- 10:23Speaker 1: it's like a fifth cousin or something weird like that.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Brandon Politic Polinic. That's that's how Chuck politics. I thought
- 10:31Speaker 1: Chuck Polinic is polluted. I was going by that. You're
- 10:35Speaker 1: from an unusual bass fishing place. Yeah, I'm quarter million
- 10:39Speaker 1: idohol trout country because it used to be like the
- 10:42Speaker 1: southeast right, it was like the Southeast US dominated bass. Yeah,
- 10:46Speaker 1: well they still do demographically because that's where most of
- 10:50Speaker 1: the competitive side of it is. That's where that's their
- 10:54Speaker 1: primary species, right, because they don't have trout, they don't
- 10:57Speaker 1: have salmon things like that. Well, it's the first you
- 11:00Speaker 1: ever calling who trout? Probably Mountain Lakes. I used to
- 11:05Speaker 1: hike into Mountain Lakes and I was like two years
- 11:06Speaker 1: old with my mom did take me? When? When did
- 11:10Speaker 1: you catch, because when did you cut your first large
- 11:12Speaker 1: mouth pass? And before we becoming a pro, so I
- 11:14Speaker 1: caught my first one, it would have been like five
- 11:18Speaker 1: or six. That was like, that wasn't I didn't know
- 11:21Speaker 1: anything about tournament fishing, Like, I was just fishing to
- 11:24Speaker 1: get a bite, right for whatever bit. That's all I
- 11:27Speaker 1: cared about. Then I was introduced to it at eight
- 11:30Speaker 1: years old. A family friend had a bass boat and
- 11:34Speaker 1: fished local tournaments and regional stuff. And then he took
- 11:38Speaker 1: me out. Because my mom knew that I loved fishing,
- 11:41Speaker 1: I didn't know that you could actually target a specific
- 11:43Speaker 1: species at that time, and he took me out, and
- 11:46Speaker 1: from that day forward, is like, that's what every single
- 11:49Speaker 1: decision in my life is geared towards. Is that? So
- 11:53Speaker 1: at eight you thought you wanted to be a professional
- 11:55Speaker 1: bass fisherman. Yeah, I try to tell him that to
- 11:56Speaker 1: your teachers in the North Idaho. Yeah, here's why I
- 12:01Speaker 1: don't need to know a you this. Yeah. But now
- 12:05Speaker 1: I look back and I'm like, man, I really wish
- 12:06Speaker 1: I would have paid a little bit more attention in
- 12:08Speaker 1: that class. But it, I mean, that was the thing
- 12:11Speaker 1: is like it It wasn't a thing like you know,
- 12:14Speaker 1: really anywhere in the Northwest to fish. And it's been
- 12:18Speaker 1: cool to see it grow, like the tournament, seeing grow
- 12:21Speaker 1: bigger and bigger around North Idaho and Washington and Oregon
- 12:24Speaker 1: and stuff to be able to see that. But I
- 12:26Speaker 1: mean it, that's all I wanted to do. And so
- 12:30Speaker 1: I just every time, like I came to a crossroads,
- 12:32Speaker 1: it was like, hey, you know, I'd have like a
- 12:35Speaker 1: long time girlfriends, like you know, you're fishing too much,
- 12:38Speaker 1: and like all right, see you. It was all part
- 12:42Speaker 1: of the plane, you know. That was the only plan.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Like in like I grew up wrestling all the way
- 12:49Speaker 1: into college, and like I knew way early on that
- 12:53Speaker 1: I was not going to wrestle like I was gonna fish.
- 12:57Speaker 1: And as I got older, I would wrestle less and less,
- 12:59Speaker 1: Like started out wrestling probably ten months out of the year,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and then I would just show up to less and
- 13:05Speaker 1: less tournaments, and I show to more and more bass tournaments,
- 13:09Speaker 1: quit going to high school, like a general competitive streak. Yeah,
- 13:13Speaker 1: And I think that's what that was part of the
- 13:15Speaker 1: reason that like of what fueled me towards bass fishing
- 13:18Speaker 1: is because there was a competitive nature there. There's winners
- 13:21Speaker 1: and losers man. Yeah, how old were you wish Uncle
- 13:24Speaker 1: Chasti was here? Uh, well what happened to Chester? Now
- 13:27Speaker 1: lost connection? So we just lost Chester's dead. He's in
- 13:32Speaker 1: the deer stand already. Yeah. The reason I bring it
- 13:36Speaker 1: up is Chester Um was a rassler, so you shared
- 13:40Speaker 1: that in common. And Chester and Seth are aspiring competitive
- 13:46Speaker 1: walleye anglers. I love walleye fishing. They're gonna go We're
- 13:50Speaker 1: hitting the they're going pro this year. We're hitting the trail,
- 13:53Speaker 1: the Montana Trail. Yeah, you can just decide to go pro,
- 13:57Speaker 1: there's no no. But then this company, you know, like
- 14:03Speaker 1: usually bass fishermen are like with tight or whoever like
- 14:06Speaker 1: or like pens oil or something, who sponsors what's on yours?
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'm still looking for a title deal. I'm just my
- 14:14Speaker 1: own sponsor. You don't have a title sponsor, No, no
- 14:16Speaker 1: title sponsor, but like Skeeter yamaha, I mean I gotta
- 14:20Speaker 1: and then like a bunch of industry sponsors stuff like that.
- 14:23Speaker 1: We're sponsoring Seth and Chester. Solid our company sponsoring Seth
- 14:26Speaker 1: and Chester. To describe how it is, um so yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 1: it's for Derby's across Montana. There's Tiber fres No, Fort
- 14:36Speaker 1: Peck and Kanyan Ferry and yeah, we're just gonna hit
- 14:40Speaker 1: them all on try and win some money. I love
- 14:43Speaker 1: trophy walleye fishing. I have no Yeah, I have no
- 14:47Speaker 1: desire to go like troll a worm, harness or an.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I despise trolling, but to go throw like seven eight
- 14:54Speaker 1: nine inch swim bays for walleye, that's my style. It's fun.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You're more of a vertical jig man though, yeah. I
- 15:02Speaker 1: mean there's so many different things you can catch walleye on.
- 15:06Speaker 1: But I unless there's certain bites where you kind of
- 15:09Speaker 1: have to troll if you want to catch them, if
- 15:12Speaker 1: you want a winner. Yeah, especially especially when you're fishing competitively,
- 15:16Speaker 1: Like there's just some bites where they're you gotta troll
- 15:19Speaker 1: for him. Um, but preferably I like catching them up
- 15:23Speaker 1: Shallow with jigs came up. You guys know BF, right,
- 15:29Speaker 1: Best Friends Forever. Crane came up with b triple f BFF,
- 15:35Speaker 1: which is best Fishing Friends Forever. I like it. That's
- 15:38Speaker 1: you and Chester and you guys are BF. But you
- 15:40Speaker 1: guys are be tripping be triple Jester. You ever seen
- 15:45Speaker 1: the video Tom Petty, don't come around here no more.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And it's kind of like about Alice in Wonderland. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: there's that part where Tom Petty and and Alice Wonderland
- 15:54Speaker 1: are at the really long table and Tom Petty looks
- 15:56Speaker 1: real small way down there. That's what you look like
- 15:58Speaker 1: right now. I don't think I've ever seen that one.
- 16:01Speaker 1: You should watch a great video. Chester, Can you tell it?
- 16:05Speaker 1: Can you break down? Everyone knows that Chester grew up
- 16:07Speaker 1: um in the pickled mushroom business. Chester's very first nickname.
- 16:12Speaker 1: If we march backward, where Chester the Divester, Uncle Chesty,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'm going in order Chesse's divester, Uncle Chaste, Chester the Investor,
- 16:27Speaker 1: Chester the Molester. Oh sorry, I'll say, well that one,
- 16:33Speaker 1: but it will have aired Chat okay, And to go
- 16:37Speaker 1: back in time from present to pass all set Chat
- 16:41Speaker 1: Chester's divester, Uncle Chesty, Chester the Investor, Chester the Molester,
- 16:50Speaker 1: Chester the Tester. If we go back to when he
- 16:52Speaker 1: was Chester the Tester, he was testing his family's pickled
- 16:57Speaker 1: mushroom recipes. That's right at his family's business. And now
- 17:05Speaker 1: two great companies have come together, Yes, Meat Eater and
- 17:11Speaker 1: Forest Floor Foods. I'm sitting at the Forest Floor Foods
- 17:16Speaker 1: World headquarters right now. He's deer hunting at the world
- 17:19Speaker 1: headquarters of Forest Floor Foods right now. Yeah, drinking an
- 17:23Speaker 1: old fashion. You guys think you're being professional bass fishing.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Imagine that Floor Foods World headquarters. Second. Anyways, I'll quick
- 17:35Speaker 1: explain the Wisconsin old fashion, which is on the website.
- 17:39Speaker 1: There's like a traditional old fashion which is like a
- 17:42Speaker 1: sugar cube, an orange like peel muddled like mashed up,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and a cherry with some bidders and then usually whiskey.
- 17:54Speaker 1: That's kind of that's that's that's sissy old fashioned. That's
- 17:58Speaker 1: like your traditional old fashion, but in Wisconsin here you
- 18:01Speaker 1: can order them multiple different ways. It's like a a
- 18:06Speaker 1: brandy old fashioned sweet or whiskey old fashioned sour whiskey
- 18:13Speaker 1: old fashioned sweet. And what that means is obviously brandy
- 18:17Speaker 1: or whiskey and then a sweet or sour soda mixed
- 18:21Speaker 1: with you like your old fashioned mix. This one here's
- 18:24Speaker 1: how I like to do it. And it's uh, whiskey
- 18:28Speaker 1: with sweet soda which is like a sprite, and then
- 18:30Speaker 1: bidders and then you're you know, old fashioned mix. So
- 18:36Speaker 1: chest you left out the interesting part the pickle. All
- 18:41Speaker 1: kinds of pickled stuff. Yeah, but that was just like
- 18:45Speaker 1: the how to make the drink. Okay, we'll talk about
- 18:48Speaker 1: the box with all the okay to sales. You're supposed
- 18:54Speaker 1: to be on here selling something. Yeah, I don't want
- 18:56Speaker 1: to know which one I can make with the box. Yeah,
- 18:58Speaker 1: talk about the box. You can. You can make all
- 19:01Speaker 1: of them with the box. Um. There's even maple syrup
- 19:05Speaker 1: in the box. Um instead a substitute for like a
- 19:08Speaker 1: sugar cube. You can use that Wisconsin maple syrup, which
- 19:12Speaker 1: my family also has a little sugar bush, so they
- 19:16Speaker 1: tapped the trees and make their own maple syrup. But
- 19:20Speaker 1: come coming with the boxes, your old fashioned mix some
- 19:23Speaker 1: queen olives, some pickled mushrooms, some sweet um pickle, little
- 19:30Speaker 1: pearl onions, and um, some cherries. So after you make
- 19:35Speaker 1: your old fashioned you throw throw those goodies in there.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And it's one heck of a drink. Yeah, available at
- 19:42Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. And I pressed Chester on
- 19:44Speaker 1: us multiple times, and I think he's telling the truth.
- 19:46Speaker 1: He's not double dipping. Chester says he's not double dipping
- 19:50Speaker 1: getting a commission from the folks, and he's on Yeah,
- 19:53Speaker 1: he's on salary with us, and he says he's not.
- 19:56Speaker 1: He didn't go poll commission to have orchestrated this. No,
- 20:01Speaker 1: I don't know if that's true or not doing all that.
- 20:03Speaker 1: There's probably a college account though, set up for his
- 20:05Speaker 1: kids that he doesn't have yet, got some sort of ownership.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I don't think he's double different, you get I mean,
- 20:14Speaker 1: they're your parents. You gotta help him out. Do your
- 20:16Speaker 1: ship to Australia. I'm sure we do. Man not Meat Eater,
- 20:27Speaker 1: but um I bet you I don't know. Don't quote
- 20:32Speaker 1: me figured out? All right, good job Chester, thank you.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Oh you you've heard about not having a couple of
- 20:38Speaker 1: cocktails and climbing up into a tree. Stand right, no,
- 20:44Speaker 1: good answer? Okay. Starting December six, which we all know
- 20:50Speaker 1: is the day before Pearl Harbor. Uh So starting December six,
- 20:54Speaker 1: running through December my gudness. Right, Yeah, we're running a
- 21:01Speaker 1: holiday gift program where we're giving back to select conservation

- 21:16Speaker 1: in the Meat Eater store that uh we'd be most
- 21:19Speaker 1: excited to give us gifts. In addition, each of us
- 21:23Speaker 1: has selected a conservation organization we're personally passionate about. So
- 21:29Speaker 1: in my case, I chose TRCP Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership
- 21:34Speaker 1: where um, I'm I'm a board member and great supporter.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Um and and that's my pick. So here's where you
- 21:41Speaker 1: come in. You go to the meat eater store, right,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you check out my gift picks. You know, I might
- 21:47Speaker 1: make one of my gift picks to damn Chester Box,
- 21:52Speaker 1: do it? Yeah, I'm gonna do that. If the official
- 21:55Speaker 1: name isn't the Chester Box, it's Chester in a box,
- 22:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick the Chester Box. Okay. So here here's
- 22:04Speaker 1: how this works. When you shot. When you go to

- 22:33Speaker 1: will go. Who are you gonna pick for your group? Cheap?

- 23:50Speaker 1: want you to start preparing mentally for the book report.
- 23:52Speaker 1: All right, um, and we're back up. We got to
- 23:54Speaker 1: talk about a couple of quick things. I was gonna
- 23:56Speaker 1: talk about my fun little deer hunting trip yesterday, which
- 24:01Speaker 1: if I go hunting to one or two things is happening.
- 24:05Speaker 1: I'm yelling at my kids the whole time, so I
- 24:07Speaker 1: brought them, or we're like filming, so I see yell
- 24:14Speaker 1: at my kids or yell at the cameraman. But I
- 24:16Speaker 1: went hunting yesday with my neighbor. Do we have a
- 24:20Speaker 1: good time with that? We had the greatest time a
- 24:25Speaker 1: person could possibly have because we went to a place
- 24:29Speaker 1: that we knew was stupid, but I had to scratch
- 24:31Speaker 1: an itch and it wanted to be in a sweet spot.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I was like, listen, man, we're just kind of looking.
- 24:37Speaker 1: We're taking a hike. I just gotta scratch an itch
- 24:42Speaker 1: and get up in there, and now it's my new
- 24:43Speaker 1: favorite place. A good time. And we got a little
- 24:47Speaker 1: bar mm hmm. I said, what are your standards? He said,
- 24:50Speaker 1: not a forky And the second buck found fit the bill,
- 24:56Speaker 1: perfect fit the bill. Uh No, we had so it
- 25:00Speaker 1: was so much fun. Man, Yanni, can you explain how
- 25:02Speaker 1: you want all that money off the Latvians? Mm hmmm.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I was deer hunting this weekend in Wisconsin, not far
- 25:10Speaker 1: from Worchester is now. I went for the open right now, Yeah,
- 25:16Speaker 1: these I didn't know that that's the same neck of
- 25:18Speaker 1: the woods there. Well, I mean, you know, what is
- 25:21Speaker 1: it two hours? Uh yeah, probably around too. I don't
- 25:27Speaker 1: know if it was like if you meant like right
- 25:28Speaker 1: there right, no, no, no, not in the same county
- 25:32Speaker 1: any who. Um, I got in late Friday. Opener was Saturday,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and uh we were getting ready to chip in for
- 25:39Speaker 1: the buckpool. How many Latvians were there? They're all at
- 25:44Speaker 1: vans and I think we had a total of ten three.
- 25:53Speaker 1: It was light. It was actually light on honest. I
- 25:57Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know what the ratio normally is
- 26:00Speaker 1: the percentage. I guess six out of ten labs, so
- 26:03Speaker 1: it's a little like males. It was. It was all
- 26:07Speaker 1: all males. Any who. Uh so we're chipping in and
- 26:11Speaker 1: it had been ten dollars all these years. I've been
- 26:14Speaker 1: hunting there since ninety I believe it was my first
- 26:16Speaker 1: year that I went. In the first two years, I
- 26:18Speaker 1: think I just went and observed I believe so so
- 26:24Speaker 1: no inflation adjustments and probably back then it probably stung. Yeah,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know, I don't know how much
- 26:30Speaker 1: a nice Well, let me look up. Then spectacle side decided,
- 26:39Speaker 1: I asked if anybody everybody want to make a little
- 26:41Speaker 1: more interesting and bump it up to twenty pieces year.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Everybody uh obliged and dropped in twenty into the basket,
- 26:49Speaker 1: and uh so we went hunting and I got lucky.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I'm really a little side story. I'm really stoked about
- 26:56Speaker 1: my hunt this weekend and my hunt two weeks ago
- 26:58Speaker 1: there on the same property, because I feel like I
- 27:01Speaker 1: figured it out, like I hunted there for thirty years
- 27:04Speaker 1: or twenty eight years, and really just you know, I
- 27:08Speaker 1: kind of knew it, but didn't really know what the
- 27:09Speaker 1: deer were doing there. Had ideas and go ahead, Steve,
- 27:14Speaker 1: ten dollars. That's that's the bump. I keep ahead of
- 27:24Speaker 1: the trend. Go a little more and maybe we'll round
- 27:26Speaker 1: it up at twenty five and then that'll roll for
- 27:27Speaker 1: another ten There you go. Sorry, um, but anyways, I
- 27:31Speaker 1: had to really successful, uh pretty quick hunts really because
- 27:36Speaker 1: I was there two weeks ago for the rut with
- 27:38Speaker 1: my bow and I sat in the stand approximately seven
- 27:41Speaker 1: hours and killed the same like basics like same property, yeah,
- 27:46Speaker 1: same property probably, I mean as the crow flies from
- 27:49Speaker 1: one stand to the other five or six hundred yards, um,
- 27:53Speaker 1: but kind of down this complicated ridge system, you know.
- 27:57Speaker 1: And uh so I felt like I picked a good spot,
- 28:00Speaker 1: killed a buck with my bow, and then when I
- 28:02Speaker 1: came back, I thought, man, I could go and sit
- 28:04Speaker 1: that same oak flat. I know it's gonna be good.
- 28:06Speaker 1: There's been pictures of box, you know, rolling through. But
- 28:10Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, don't like rest on your laurels,
- 28:13Speaker 1: like go and figure something else out, go and learn
- 28:15Speaker 1: something like expand your horizons. And I had like planned
- 28:19Speaker 1: B and C already sort of set up that I
- 28:21Speaker 1: eventually would check out. So I thought, this is it.
- 28:23Speaker 1: So I went to be got in there, and sure enough,
- 28:26Speaker 1: opening morning, it's pretty sweet little hunt. I get in there,
- 28:30Speaker 1: plenty of time to get you know, I'm hunting out
- 28:32Speaker 1: of the saddle, so it takes longer to get into
- 28:34Speaker 1: the tree, right. It takes me an hour to get
- 28:36Speaker 1: in I get all set up, it's maybe half an
- 28:39Speaker 1: hour before shooting light. I'm still messing around, just like
- 28:43Speaker 1: filling with like the last little kind of fine tune
- 28:46Speaker 1: and stuff, making sure I got my gloves in my
- 28:48Speaker 1: hand warmers in the right spots. Or whatever and get
- 28:52Speaker 1: a cup of coffee up in that tree. Um it's
- 28:55Speaker 1: in a thermis, just in my backpack. Um, I'm always
- 28:58Speaker 1: posting pictures of my coffee because I put cream in
- 29:01Speaker 1: my coffee. And by golly, I guess you're just a
- 29:04Speaker 1: real little bit according to Instagram right now as far
- 29:11Speaker 1: as I've been starting that just draws in the big
- 29:13Speaker 1: box play. Newcomb says that if he had to choose
- 29:17Speaker 1: between the coffee or the cream, he'd go with the cream.
- 29:20Speaker 1: He puts coffee into his cream, not vice versa. Interesting
- 29:25Speaker 1: is a sugar guy too. We after that, ever, spend
- 29:28Speaker 1: that week with Evan Hey for up in Alaska. I'm
- 29:31Speaker 1: like almost weaned off of cream because he cream shamed people.
- 29:35Speaker 1: He did, but I enjoyed. Samantha notice that she's like
- 29:39Speaker 1: after he started ship talking cream people, cream cream consumption
- 29:43Speaker 1: in our camp ended like ended, and I like, I like,
- 29:49Speaker 1: I didn't know you were doing the same thing. I'd
- 29:51Speaker 1: sneak over and put a little cream in when I
- 29:55Speaker 1: was started. Uh, he says, with with coffee, you don't
- 30:01Speaker 1: need cream, and so I was like, all right, well
- 30:03Speaker 1: let's give a shot. And yeah, my my wife coffee
- 30:07Speaker 1: in hair cream as well. It's a real road block
- 30:09Speaker 1: in that relationship. It's probably it's good. There we are there,
- 30:13Speaker 1: I am, and uh, I still have my head lamp on,
- 30:18Speaker 1: and I hear coming around the corner, still with your
- 30:22Speaker 1: head lamp. Yeah. So it's like six I think it
- 30:25Speaker 1: was roughly six fifteen, six ten maybe, you know. And
- 30:28Speaker 1: so I click it off real quick, and I mean
- 30:31Speaker 1: it's like on top of me. So I get my
- 30:32Speaker 1: little binoculars out and I'm pretty much trying to like
- 30:35Speaker 1: look in the night, you know, for for for this deer,
- 30:39Speaker 1: and sure enough I can find it, and I can
- 30:41Speaker 1: just in the darkness see the white antlers. I'm like,
- 30:43Speaker 1: only sh it, you know, nice buck. But I'm like, well, hell,
- 30:46Speaker 1: this thing's not gonna be here in twenty minutes, you know,
- 30:48Speaker 1: like like that's pretty much going by, like just forget
- 30:52Speaker 1: about it. But I watched him for a second as
- 30:53Speaker 1: he walks by. So I continue on with my stuff
- 30:57Speaker 1: now without my head lamp on, and I'm messing around.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Five minutes goes by, and just at the ridge I
- 31:02Speaker 1: hear no. I'm like, huh so a glass up there,
- 31:07Speaker 1: And I find him again and he's only gone like
- 31:09Speaker 1: sixty seventy yards. So I'm watching him a little bit
- 31:13Speaker 1: and i can tell he's feeding. You know, they're the
- 31:15Speaker 1: acorns were thick. I talked to some of the neighbors
- 31:17Speaker 1: that have actual food plots, like the like the bottoms
- 31:20Speaker 1: of the ridges, and they're like, the deer have not
- 31:23Speaker 1: been in the corn and the beans nothing. They're on
- 31:26Speaker 1: the ridge tops eating acorns and it's been like that
- 31:29Speaker 1: all summer. Uh, So that's what this deer. So he's
- 31:32Speaker 1: up there grunting and eating. Well, so as I'm glass
- 31:35Speaker 1: would for the episode, I see there's another deer behind him.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I can't tell what it is, but I'm guessing maybe
- 31:44Speaker 1: dough and he's tending her. Right. So now I'm like,
- 31:49Speaker 1: what time was shooting white? You know, you got somebody
- 31:52Speaker 1: was talking about it last night, but I wasn't really
- 31:54Speaker 1: painted exactly. Now I'm in a position where it really
- 31:59Speaker 1: matters when exactly. So I'm like trying to pull out
- 32:03Speaker 1: my phone and shah shielded something. It's not casting a
- 32:07Speaker 1: big light, and I go to like three different apps
- 32:09Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, once at six four, one, six three,
- 32:13Speaker 1: I'm like I'm going six thirty three, you know, because
- 32:15Speaker 1: because this morning, I will be the first shot that
- 32:17Speaker 1: rings out, just quick, just to be like a guy.
- 32:22Speaker 1: The state list their own. Yes, they don't go by
- 32:26Speaker 1: all the different as I know, And I could have
- 32:28Speaker 1: probably pulled up the rags on a PDF and then
- 32:30Speaker 1: done the little chart thing where you had twelve minutes
- 32:35Speaker 1: appreciate it. And uh so I decided I'm going with
- 32:39Speaker 1: six thirty three. That seems like a good number. So
- 32:43Speaker 1: I'm watching it and he's still there. He's still there.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Six thirty three comes. I'm like, okay, you know, next opportunity. Well,
- 32:51Speaker 1: I start looking through the scope and it's still just
- 32:53Speaker 1: way too dark, even though he's only at like seventy
- 32:55Speaker 1: maybe eighty yards. There's some brush like I hadn't really
- 32:58Speaker 1: cut this place out really good, and I can see
- 33:02Speaker 1: a body and his auntlers. But I'm like, I can't
- 33:04Speaker 1: be sure, so I'm like, just be patient, hopefully it
- 33:06Speaker 1: will happen. He's kind of looked like he's now going left,
- 33:09Speaker 1: which he's gonna move into a more open zone on
- 33:12Speaker 1: this ridge top. Well, as I'm watching him, I look
- 33:17Speaker 1: over to my left against the same path he came. Nope,
- 33:20Speaker 1: another buck, so I look I look over at him
- 33:24Speaker 1: and I'm watching him for a seconds, a little bit
- 33:26Speaker 1: smaller I think than the one that went by me,
- 33:29Speaker 1: and watching him, I was not look back up to
- 33:31Speaker 1: where the other buck was, and I just see a
- 33:32Speaker 1: tail going out down the ridge through the woods, white,
- 33:35Speaker 1: you know, whitetail his the rear end. I'm like, dang it,
- 33:38Speaker 1: you know what happened. I know my winds solid, but
- 33:42Speaker 1: maybe that buck spooked that buck or whatever. And you know,
- 33:45Speaker 1: stuff's happening fast now because it's you know, I'm like,
- 33:48Speaker 1: I'm ready to kill this buck if I get the opportunity. Well,
- 33:51Speaker 1: I look back up again, and now here's a doge
- 33:53Speaker 1: coming back down the ridge towards me, and the little
- 33:55Speaker 1: buck that's next to me now sort of goes to
- 33:57Speaker 1: start trying to cut her off. Right, are gonna meet,
- 34:00Speaker 1: like just off the edge of the ridge. Well, that
- 34:03Speaker 1: guy made the little buck makes it halfway to the dough,
- 34:06Speaker 1: and all of sudden I look up again and here
- 34:08Speaker 1: comes the bigger buck, just ears pinned back, like not
- 34:10Speaker 1: running but marching. You know, they kind of pick up
- 34:13Speaker 1: their front legs a little bit more than really stopping it.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Just run him off. I don't know, I don't know,
- 34:18Speaker 1: if it was a different dough. You know, it's just
- 34:21Speaker 1: it's hard to say. It was early light. But he
- 34:23Speaker 1: came back, he came back, He came back in cut
- 34:26Speaker 1: the little buck off. The little buck coward immediately kind
- 34:29Speaker 1: of turned, and then the bigger buck put his antlers
- 34:32Speaker 1: down and kind of ran him and just happened to
- 34:34Speaker 1: run him like literally under my tree stand and so
- 34:37Speaker 1: I kind of, you know, without shooting my toe off,
- 34:42Speaker 1: I shot him. And uh yeah, I mean it was like,
- 34:46Speaker 1: you know, the earliest by far I think I've ever
- 34:49Speaker 1: shot an animal. I mean it was that little buck
- 34:50Speaker 1: come back, I'll triumphant. Oh he was shoulder and he
- 34:55Speaker 1: was just standing there watching his body go down the
- 34:57Speaker 1: hill and crashing away, and the and the does behind
- 35:01Speaker 1: him too, and he's just like yeah, he's like, that's right,
- 35:04Speaker 1: messing the bull get the horn, that's the fire, you
- 35:07Speaker 1: get burnt. So yeah, my hunt ended pretty quick. I
- 35:10Speaker 1: actually stayed in the tree for a while just to
- 35:12Speaker 1: enjoy the morning, and shot a dough like twenty minutes later.
- 35:16Speaker 1: So you like to like, of all the Latvians who
- 35:18Speaker 1: hunt the Lavian place, you gotta have more bucks, you
- 35:21Speaker 1: gotta have bigger bucks. And needles Latvians have ever gotten
- 35:24Speaker 1: because that that place wasn't known as a big buck producer. No,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I mean, I think I've said it before. I mean
- 35:30Speaker 1: there was maybe over the years, you know, a handful
- 35:33Speaker 1: of you know, one forties killed. But my two bucks
- 35:38Speaker 1: is here, aren't that big? I mean there's been a
- 35:39Speaker 1: bigger bucks killed. But I had a good year anyways,
- 35:42Speaker 1: that wins me. The big buck pool should have been
- 35:46Speaker 1: for something for what why would it be if they
- 35:50Speaker 1: had adjusted for inflation? Bucks? Right? Oh yeah, you gonna
- 35:56Speaker 1: do my math? Yeah, it would only would add fifty
- 36:00Speaker 1: ill No, no, how much did you win? I went
- 36:03Speaker 1: so double two? Oh, let's go through the exercise. No, no,
- 36:06Speaker 1: we already did it. Remember we I adjusted for inflation
- 36:11Speaker 1: by going twenty. You did adjust. So these guys were
- 36:15Speaker 1: kind of pissed at me because they forgot about that
- 36:18Speaker 1: part of the story. Yeah that's right. You pushed for
- 36:21Speaker 1: a higher fee and then one and it looks suspicious.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but all that out they make it look
- 36:30Speaker 1: like I was paying better attention. To wrap it all up,
- 36:35Speaker 1: When you're the winner of the big buck Pool, you
- 36:37Speaker 1: don't really get all the money of the big buck Pool.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Because there's a tradition there where they like to take
- 36:44Speaker 1: a nice bottle, usually Scotch, because the guys there that
- 36:48Speaker 1: like to drink I like to drink Scotch. I personally
- 36:52Speaker 1: might switch it up, but I didn't this year because
- 36:55Speaker 1: I was given sort of like a press, a congratulatory
- 36:58Speaker 1: present for having successful sheep hunt by another one of
- 37:01Speaker 1: the hunters, and as sort of a I don't know,
- 37:04Speaker 1: like congratulations, he gave me a nice scotsh bottle, and
- 37:08Speaker 1: so I didn't have to go into town and come back.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I just I just used that. Everybody signs it, regifted
- 37:14Speaker 1: the scots bottle I did. I ran it by everybody.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I said, Hey, the guy that gave to me, he's
- 37:18Speaker 1: not gonna be pissed for doing this, right, nobody's seen
- 37:20Speaker 1: to give a shit. So but everybody signs it, and
- 37:23Speaker 1: you know, you can make a little note, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 1: where you shot the big buck or whatever, and that
- 37:28Speaker 1: way next year. Oh and the funny thing is too,
- 37:30Speaker 1: We're at like this Latinan church camp, right, and it's
- 37:34Speaker 1: in the wall. This bottle just lives in this wall
- 37:37Speaker 1: behind like a twelve by twelve inch piece of plywood,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and that piece of plywood has been there for since
- 37:44Speaker 1: the building was built. I don't know what ducked because
- 37:47Speaker 1: it's a circular hole, the square piece of what over it.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Those summer camp kids never find it and get drunk,
- 37:53Speaker 1: not yet, not yet, or they just respect it. Maybe
- 37:56Speaker 1: it's been told to them that it's hands off so anywhere. Yeah.
- 37:58Speaker 1: So I I went in there this year without the
- 38:00Speaker 1: bottle from last year, and then put in the new
- 38:03Speaker 1: bottle and hopefully I'll be back next year. Jani's petitioning
- 38:08Speaker 1: to UM. Traditionally it's been a man only, was it
- 38:12Speaker 1: like stated or that's just how it's been, you know,
- 38:15Speaker 1: I dug into it a little bit. So funny how
- 38:18Speaker 1: people's you know, ideas and perceptions change because my dad specifically,
- 38:23Speaker 1: I remember one year, you know, a woman had been
- 38:27Speaker 1: invited and showed up and he was very like, kind
- 38:31Speaker 1: of mad about it, right, but it was most There
- 38:33Speaker 1: was some other things going on, but that was part
- 38:35Speaker 1: of it. Now he's got granddaughters. Yeah, but there's also
- 38:39Speaker 1: there's a there's a deceased hunter that was there, and
- 38:43Speaker 1: I guess he was really of the mind frame of like,
- 38:45Speaker 1: this is a man's camp where men get to get
- 38:48Speaker 1: away and do men type stuff and it's just not
- 38:53Speaker 1: you know, like women can do their own personal little
- 38:56Speaker 1: whatever rose whatever is. Yeah, but he's not around anymore,
- 39:02Speaker 1: and hopefully he won't. You know, I don't think he'll
- 39:04Speaker 1: turn over in his grave with my girls show up,
- 39:06Speaker 1: so they might look, you might be you might usher in,
- 39:10Speaker 1: you might usher in some women into the camp. Yeah,
- 39:13Speaker 1: but you know, I was thinking about how those girls
- 39:15Speaker 1: come and win all that money eight and ten. Man,
- 39:18Speaker 1: you know, we're just talking about with Brandon to like
- 39:20Speaker 1: sitting around in a tree stand when you're not used
- 39:22Speaker 1: to it, like my girls are used to Western hunting.
- 39:24Speaker 1: We just go on big, long hikes until we see
- 39:26Speaker 1: some games, final stuff laying on the ground and yeah,
- 39:29Speaker 1: you don't just go to one spot and then someone
- 39:32Speaker 1: tells you, now, just enjoy the owls and the you
- 39:35Speaker 1: know that fly around and the squirrels. They're gonna be
- 39:38Speaker 1: jumping around. You gotta pick a spot where they can
- 39:42Speaker 1: where you can slip out, have them be like what's
- 39:44Speaker 1: the first hours? A lot of fun. At the end
- 39:47Speaker 1: of the first hour, slip them out, let them go
- 39:51Speaker 1: about their business, and then you come back up and
- 39:53Speaker 1: do the keep hunting. Midday hunt, or a good idea,
- 39:58Speaker 1: do the two hour evening hunt. Anybody's good for a
- 40:03Speaker 1: couple of hours. I think I got some work to
- 40:06Speaker 1: do though. Me that's a lot of double stands I
- 40:08Speaker 1: need to set. When I when I was little man,
- 40:13Speaker 1: my dad would hang, I'm not kidding. He had his
- 40:17Speaker 1: tree stand and at a time he had three other
- 40:20Speaker 1: stands above his, and we'd go up and sitting those
- 40:22Speaker 1: stands above. Yeah, like freaking raccoons up in the tree.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I mean. But again, you know, anyone wants to like
- 40:31Speaker 1: I thought that just an evening hunt was like a decade,
- 40:35Speaker 1: for like a decade being in that tree. Here's here's
- 40:39Speaker 1: like some kind of distressing news, bad news. This is
- 40:43Speaker 1: gonna be like a bad news sandwich. It's like good
- 40:45Speaker 1: stuff and then like bad news, and then we'll have
- 40:48Speaker 1: more good stuff. But so Washington State, this year the
- 40:53Speaker 1: spring bear season got canceled. One might be like, well,
- 40:55Speaker 1: how the hell could that happen? It's like this, this
- 41:00Speaker 1: is the way this is. Well, we're gonna couple it
- 41:06Speaker 1: with another thing. I will now lay out for you
- 41:09Speaker 1: why the two party system as we know it in
- 41:13Speaker 1: this country inevitably uh screws hunters. And anglers give you
- 41:21Speaker 1: little groundwork first. Okay, you look so okay. Under the
- 41:26Speaker 1: Trump administration, he did all kinds of good stuff for
- 41:28Speaker 1: access issues. He like overturned Alaska, you know, like the
- 41:33Speaker 1: Obama administration had taken away Alaska's ability to use certain
- 41:37Speaker 1: management tools, um, certain predator management tools like the on refuges.
- 41:44Speaker 1: So under Obama, like like Alaska lost ont of their landscape.
- 41:50Speaker 1: They had the FEDS come in and say, like, you
- 41:52Speaker 1: can't do certain things that we think are naughty if
- 41:54Speaker 1: it's on a on a refuge. And Trump went back
- 41:57Speaker 1: and fixed that. So that was great. Trump did a
- 42:00Speaker 1: bunch of great access stuff. Okay, he took um you know,
- 42:04Speaker 1: even stuff stuff like like fish hatcheries that had been
- 42:07Speaker 1: closed to fishing or fish hatchery landscapes they opened about
- 42:12Speaker 1: the hunting, they made wildlife refugees kind of like simplify
- 42:16Speaker 1: and expand hunting opportunities. And a lot of great stuff
- 42:19Speaker 1: for like the protection of hunting culture. But he also
- 42:22Speaker 1: had a lot of great stuff for industry, and at
- 42:24Speaker 1: times industry is at odds with hunting and fishing habitat.
- 42:28Speaker 1: So you're looking like in Tongas National Forest, I have
- 42:33Speaker 1: a cabinet there, So I have a particular bias towards
- 42:35Speaker 1: that area. Tongas National Forest, Coastal Rainforest, Old Girls Rainforest.
- 42:41Speaker 1: There was a rule in place that was protecting like
- 42:43Speaker 1: everything that doesn't have a road. There was a rule
- 42:46Speaker 1: in place that protected the status quo. I mean, they
- 42:48Speaker 1: were gonna build any more roads in Targas, so not
- 42:51Speaker 1: closed old roads. If there's no road, we're not gonna
- 42:54Speaker 1: make a road. Trump opened it up that they like
- 42:59Speaker 1: remove that protection. It opened up the possibility of building
- 43:02Speaker 1: more roads into old growth coastal rainforest. The reason you
- 43:06Speaker 1: build more roads and the old growth coastal rainforest is
- 43:09Speaker 1: to cut down the old growth coastal rainforest. Like the
- 43:11Speaker 1: road building and the cut and go hand in hand. Um.
- 43:15Speaker 1: So it was like, here's this guy that really protects hunters,
- 43:20Speaker 1: protects access, protects hunters rights, protects gun rights. But then
- 43:25Speaker 1: you know kind of like hits you where it counts
- 43:28Speaker 1: a little bit on habitat issues. So that's that's like
- 43:32Speaker 1: kind of the give and take here you have at Washington.
- 43:37Speaker 1: The governor appoints uh game commissioners. Okay, the state is
- 43:44Speaker 1: supposed to have nine game commissioners, and the way it
- 43:47Speaker 1: works is it's kind of spread around. You get basically
- 43:50Speaker 1: three from the west side of the state can follow
- 43:54Speaker 1: along print for when I screw this up. Three from
- 43:58Speaker 1: the west side of the state, those are probably gonna
- 44:00Speaker 1: be Those are just probably gonna be like liberal urban nights.
- 44:06Speaker 1: They have to point three commissioners from the east side
- 44:10Speaker 1: of the state, which are probably gonna lean more conservative
- 44:12Speaker 1: and be more pro hunting, okay, And then there's three
- 44:16Speaker 1: sort of at large. Is that you can get anywhere,
- 44:19Speaker 1: and it's like like the Supreme Court, there's nine in
- 44:22Speaker 1: order to have a tiebreaker. But the governor hasn't promoted,
- 44:29Speaker 1: he hasn't appointed a new commissioner, so they only have eight.
- 44:33Speaker 1: The commissioner he hasn't appointed as a commissioner from the
- 44:37Speaker 1: east side of the state, where people are going to
- 44:39Speaker 1: be more kind of grow up around wildlife and understand
- 44:41Speaker 1: hunting better and not view it like a thing that's
- 44:43Speaker 1: only to be looked out a window. At So the
- 44:47Speaker 1: Fish and Game Agency comes out with some studies about
- 44:50Speaker 1: bears and they have a thriving, expanding, healthy population of bears.
- 44:54Speaker 1: You're like, we can have a spring hunt, no problem continued.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Businesses usually have a spring hunt. People are saying, well,
- 44:59Speaker 1: what if they you to female with cubs in the spring? Well,
- 45:03Speaker 1: let's take a look last year, sorry, this year, the
- 45:08Speaker 1: past spring, we just had spring season. They issued six
- 45:12Speaker 1: D black bear permits. Okay, of those six hundred sixty
- 45:19Speaker 1: permits they issued, they had one forty five successful bear hunters.
- 45:23Speaker 1: So on bears get killed in Washington. Let me throw
- 45:27Speaker 1: one at your seth. How many of those bears? D
- 45:30Speaker 1: big number? How many were lactating female? Seth? Take a guess. Well,
- 45:35Speaker 1: I can see you right here with Okay, let's do this.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Let's do this. Let's say you hadn't seen that when
- 45:46Speaker 1: I was reading that sentence and my mind was gonna
- 45:50Speaker 1: be quarter. Maybe if I had, like, I would have
- 45:56Speaker 1: been like, ten wouldn't shock me, nor would it dissuade
- 46:00Speaker 1: me from supporting spring bears season. I probably would have
- 46:03Speaker 1: went less than ten, just because it's the same in Montana.
- 46:06Speaker 1: You can't in the spring. You can't kill a saladass cubs.
- 46:09Speaker 1: And oftentimes you sit there and watch a bear for
- 46:12Speaker 1: a while to make sure it has it doesn't have cubs.
- 46:16Speaker 1: But some people don't do that, and also they I've
- 46:19Speaker 1: watched I've watched sows feeding out an avalanche slide, and
- 46:23Speaker 1: I've watched them hide their cubs in the willows on
- 46:25Speaker 1: the side of the avalanche slide and go out and
- 46:27Speaker 1: feed the avalanche side for five minutes. And I noticed.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I watched her, and I know she's got cubs in
- 46:35Speaker 1: the willows on the side of the avalanche slide. But
- 46:37Speaker 1: you could sat there and been like, watched her for
- 46:39Speaker 1: five minutes. So it happens. But it's like a lot
- 46:43Speaker 1: of stuff happens. I mean, bears practice and fantaside, like
- 46:46Speaker 1: boars kill cubs. You don't want to abolish boars. Yep.
- 46:53Speaker 1: One Sethord, he gave it away. Kind of ruined my
- 46:58Speaker 1: I didn't give it away. I just told you I
- 46:59Speaker 1: knew the answer. Oh you didn't say what the answer was.
- 47:03Speaker 1: It's one, yeah, smits hunt bears get killed and one
- 47:09Speaker 1: they killed one all they determined it was a lactating female.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Quite possible they were the cubs already dead. Should have
- 47:18Speaker 1: been a lactating female no matter what. Her cubs could
- 47:20Speaker 1: have died a month ago. Yeah, that hunter could have
- 47:24Speaker 1: sat there and stared that Salford two hours might not violate.
- 47:27Speaker 1: He might not have violated a law. She might not
- 47:29Speaker 1: have been a company by cubs because the boar might
- 47:31Speaker 1: have already eaten her cups. So if you watch the
- 47:36Speaker 1: YouTube video that came out that they got there, you
- 47:38Speaker 1: can go watch the whole commissioner meeting. In the meeting,
- 47:42Speaker 1: they clarify it's not biology. They clarify its social pressure.
- 47:50Speaker 1: We've been alert like we've been Krian had this long
- 47:52Speaker 1: exchange of someone. We've been alerted that like like a
- 47:55Speaker 1: commissioner from Washington or Fish and Game official from Washington
- 47:59Speaker 1: saying like, what's going on in Washington is very bad
- 48:03Speaker 1: for hunters and anglers. Where they're appointing commission they're appointing
- 48:06Speaker 1: game commissioners who are antagonistic to hunting, like a fox
- 48:11Speaker 1: garden henhouse. Not good. Yeah, And you know this is
- 48:17Speaker 1: the thing, this is where this is where the two
- 48:20Speaker 1: party system sucks, because like I'm sorry, Republicans don't take
- 48:26Speaker 1: away your bear season, Nope, they just take away the habitat. Yeah.
- 48:32Speaker 1: And this person I spoke to was talking about the
- 48:37Speaker 1: difference between you know, conservation and concepts of preservation and
- 48:42Speaker 1: the Commission's you know, obviously not saying that they're anti hunting.
- 48:46Speaker 1: But that seems to be a little bit of the trends.
- 48:48Speaker 1: So you're kind of picking off the low hanging fruit.
- 48:51Speaker 1: So folks who maybe bear hunters, there's a smaller population
- 48:54Speaker 1: among them among the general hunting population, and so may
- 49:00Speaker 1: be fewer people would turn out to say a thing
- 49:03Speaker 1: about this, And so it's like you're just starting to
- 49:06Speaker 1: pick off what's kind of the obvious. It's, dude, it's
- 49:10Speaker 1: the whole slippery slope thing, and the slippery slope. There's
- 49:12Speaker 1: a slope and it's slippery, Like I'm a big slippery
- 49:15Speaker 1: slope guy. It's a slippery slope, it's pitched at a
- 49:19Speaker 1: steep angle, and it's covered in snot. It's just it's
- 49:26Speaker 1: it's so distressing, man, it's so distressing. Like there needs
- 49:32Speaker 1: to be a new well with me and Yanni ran
- 49:35Speaker 1: for president. That's what it was. I'm only talking about
- 49:38Speaker 1: I'm only talking about single issue voters, of which I'm
- 49:41Speaker 1: mostly a single issue voter. I'm a single issue voter
- 49:43Speaker 1: where I'm like, I'm like, interesting, what's good for hunting fishing?
- 49:46Speaker 1: So I want habitat protections and and like protect habitat,
- 49:52Speaker 1: protect hunting rights, protect firearm rights um and clean air,
- 49:58Speaker 1: clean water, real clean environment, that's all. Is that asking
- 50:02Speaker 1: too much? Nope, who wouldn't think so? Apparently, but yeah,
- 50:09Speaker 1: apparently it is. If you live in Washington, what you
- 50:12Speaker 1: need to do is get this ninth. You need to
- 50:15Speaker 1: get this ninth because you're never gonna have like the
- 50:18Speaker 1: in Washington, the big urban areas. You're never gonna catch
- 50:22Speaker 1: up to him. Like I remember Colorado lost trapping. I
- 50:25Speaker 1: remember going to this this little seminar at a National
- 50:28Speaker 1: Trappers Association convention. The guy was getting into Colorado demographics.
- 50:31Speaker 1: It was funny the second, like not the second, the minute, Uh,
- 50:36Speaker 1: Denver and Fort Collins had a population greater than Colorado.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Outside of those places at large, Bam lost trapping. So
- 50:47Speaker 1: if you live in Washington, you're culturally you're always gonna
- 50:51Speaker 1: get whooped because you have those huge population centers. They're
- 50:54Speaker 1: gonna be like, you shouldn't be able to do that
- 50:56Speaker 1: to bears. That's mean. I love my dog, you know,
- 51:01Speaker 1: it's like you're never going to beat them. Well, here's
- 51:04Speaker 1: the other thing. Remember what's the gentleman's name we had
- 51:07Speaker 1: on when we talked about trapping. Yeah, yeah, um, Mr
- 51:12Speaker 1: Mattneie yes, Mr Mattenie, Dad, Mike Mane, Mike Mattenie, Yeah,
- 51:19Speaker 1: I remember him kind of drawing this analogy around, like
- 51:22Speaker 1: people having that idea like, oh, you can't do this
- 51:25Speaker 1: to the poor bear, the poor beaver. You shouldn't do
- 51:28Speaker 1: this to the poor mink um. But for example, with
- 51:32Speaker 1: furs being being a material that is completely renewable, and
- 51:38Speaker 1: all the people who are talking about saving the environment
- 51:42Speaker 1: are buying fleece made of plastic polluting the ocean. So
- 51:46Speaker 1: it's like the hypocrisy of and and like the limits
- 51:49Speaker 1: of your own kind of self reflection about what you're
- 51:52Speaker 1: champion but actually acting in opposition to that renewables. But
- 51:58Speaker 1: they don't like renewable bears or beavers. Uh. So you're like,
- 52:03Speaker 1: what do you do about this? While you guys gotta
- 52:05Speaker 1: get everybody's gotta have a big ship fit. That's for starters.
- 52:09Speaker 1: You gotta get a ninth commissioner appointed. Who's who is
- 52:15Speaker 1: a supporter of uh hunter conservationists. There's a guy, there's
- 52:23Speaker 1: a state representative in District eight, Matt, how do you
- 52:25Speaker 1: think he pronounced? This is the name Bonky bank b
- 52:29Speaker 1: o e h n k e state representative. He's uh
- 52:36Speaker 1: he's filing a joint resolution in December. This month, he's
- 52:39Speaker 1: filing a joint resolution for an amendment to the state
- 52:43Speaker 1: constitution that will add to the right to hunting and fish.
- 52:47Speaker 1: So most states have a right to hunting fish, but
- 52:50Speaker 1: it's not it doesn't have teeth. It's not clear. A
- 52:54Speaker 1: matter of fact, we remember one state was doing like
- 52:56Speaker 1: the right to hunting fish. One of the recent ones
- 52:58Speaker 1: that passed it's right to hunting fish RESI Lution didn't
- 53:01Speaker 1: put trapping in the resolution because they wanted to have
- 53:05Speaker 1: better messaging. So when you do a state right to
- 53:08Speaker 1: hunt fish, you need to be like you need to
- 53:10Speaker 1: they need to have it has to have teeth that
- 53:12Speaker 1: would be like biologically sustainable populations and spell out like
- 53:16Speaker 1: what exactly it means, because this would be a great
- 53:19Speaker 1: case if you had a right to hunt fish that
- 53:21Speaker 1: had teeth to it. This would be a great case
- 53:23Speaker 1: for a lawsuit where you're saying, we have a sustainable
- 53:26Speaker 1: population of black bears that we've historically been allowed to hunt.
- 53:30Speaker 1: There's no biological evidence that it's that it's not sustainable,
- 53:34Speaker 1: but yet we're losing the right to hunting fishes. So
- 53:37Speaker 1: we're gonna file. We're gonna sue under our thing as
- 53:40Speaker 1: a violation to the state constitution because you're taking away
- 53:43Speaker 1: a historic hunting right with no biological basis for it.
- 53:48Speaker 1: But if you have the right to hunt and fish
- 53:50Speaker 1: in the constitution, would there be like very very specific
- 53:53Speaker 1: in particular details outlining how the right is to be.
- 53:57Speaker 1: That's problem with the state right to hunt, because people
- 53:59Speaker 1: will be like shoot and ship in the summer. You'd
- 54:01Speaker 1: be like, well, it's my right, that's what I'm saying. Well,
- 54:04Speaker 1: we did remember when we remember years ago we went
- 54:06Speaker 1: to uh where were we in Ohio? Where the hell
- 54:08Speaker 1: were we? We went to visit the Sportsman's Alliance. Yeah,
- 54:11Speaker 1: and talked about these things, and it's like it's a
- 54:14Speaker 1: great gesture and it sort of measures because those things
- 54:17Speaker 1: usually pass with like overwhelming majorities. It's a great gesture.
- 54:21Speaker 1: But if you if it, if it doesn't like clearly
- 54:23Speaker 1: articulate certain parameters, it's hard to sue against. But I
- 54:28Speaker 1: think that they were I think that some people use
- 54:31Speaker 1: it in this state around wolves. I think anyways, you
- 54:35Speaker 1: need to have like a robust, well worded, clearly articulated
- 54:39Speaker 1: what it means so that it can then be used
- 54:41Speaker 1: to challenge in fractions to your rights. All right, hey,
- 54:53Speaker 1: and this with the Fishing report Book report all right,
- 54:57Speaker 1: the so the some one's kind of like close to
- 55:00Speaker 1: home and uh, I guess like, uh to check chet,
- 55:04Speaker 1: I'm going to kind of double dip because I used
- 55:06Speaker 1: this for the Bent podcast. No double dipping in contents, fine,
- 55:10Speaker 1: double dipping in finances, of which he is the new
- 55:14Speaker 1: co host. Everybody, Oh yeah, I introduced that, Hayden. Oh yeah.
- 55:17Speaker 1: So I co host a podcast with Joe Sormelli. It's
- 55:21Speaker 1: the Bent Fishing Podcast. And we talked about all things
- 55:24Speaker 1: kind of irreverend and fun and uh and fishing and
- 55:28Speaker 1: it's informative as it is entertaining and great. So y'all
- 55:32Speaker 1: ought to give it a listen. And this is a
- 55:34Speaker 1: double dip. This is a double dip. We're going to
- 55:36Speaker 1: talk about something that's going on right here in Montana
- 55:40Speaker 1: and that is a little problem that we have with
- 55:43Speaker 1: some lake trout in Flathead Lake. Uh. Flathead Lake, for
- 55:48Speaker 1: those that you don't know, is a giantly Is it
- 55:51Speaker 1: the biggest lake in the state. It's like two biggest naturally. Yeah,
- 55:57Speaker 1: I think it's the biggest natural lake in the in
- 55:59Speaker 1: the something another it's it's it's the look that up, Phil,
- 56:02Speaker 1: you're not doing anything over there. Oh, I'll lick it up.
- 56:07Speaker 1: It's the biggest something. It's a real big lake anything like. Yeah.
- 56:10Speaker 1: The so in this big gass lake straddles an important boundary,
- 56:14Speaker 1: and that's the boundary between state land and res land,
- 56:18Speaker 1: specifically the Flathead Reservation, which is home to the Confederated
- 56:22Speaker 1: Salish and the Sailors Sails largest freshwater lake west of
- 56:27Speaker 1: the Mississippi in the lower forty eight states. Told you
- 56:32Speaker 1: there you go. It's a big one. So the Confederated
- 56:35Speaker 1: Sailish and the Koote and I tribes, Sailors Kotey. I'm
- 56:41Speaker 1: gonna have to go back and you can go and
- 56:46Speaker 1: do a third podcast. You know. That's how you know.
- 56:47Speaker 1: That's how you know I actually read it because I
- 56:50Speaker 1: didn't hear it. So that is good evidence that you
- 56:52Speaker 1: didn't just hear about this at the bar. Yeah. So anyway,
- 56:57Speaker 1: it's straddles this uh, this line between in the resident
- 57:00Speaker 1: state land, and that's important. We'll get to that later on. Um. So,
- 57:04Speaker 1: basically forever, Flathead Lake has been a stronghold for a
- 57:09Speaker 1: native species called the bull trout. Now, the bull trout
- 57:12Speaker 1: is a char and it's this real big, aggressive looking fish.
- 57:15Speaker 1: It kind of looks like a lake trout almost. Um.
- 57:20Speaker 1: And back in uh, we got to talk about some dates.
- 57:23Speaker 1: So back in nineteen o five, uh, the Montana you know,
- 57:28Speaker 1: fish and wildlife I guess of the time, decided that
- 57:31Speaker 1: they were going to drop a whole bunch of non
- 57:33Speaker 1: native species to like diversify like the fishing opportunity, because
- 57:37Speaker 1: why not, because why not? One of these was the
- 57:40Speaker 1: lake trout. Now, of those fish that you know they
- 57:44Speaker 1: dropped in, these are the only ones that kind of
- 57:46Speaker 1: like took hold. This was not a big well I
- 57:51Speaker 1: take exception with that the lake whitefish. The lake whitefish
- 57:56Speaker 1: is not native and is very prolific in that lake.
- 58:00Speaker 1: What's not predatory? M okay, So the lake whitefish in
- 58:04Speaker 1: the lake trout took hold. Uh. Now, this wasn't a
- 58:09Speaker 1: problem until like when, in order to like bolst the
- 58:16Speaker 1: cocony salmon stock another non native fish, they decided that
- 58:21Speaker 1: they would introduce mices shrimp in order to like give
- 58:25Speaker 1: them something to feed on. Now, the problem with that is,
- 58:27Speaker 1: like the cocony salmon didn't really like the mices shrimp,
- 58:31Speaker 1: and the Mices shrimp fed primarily on zooplankton, which is
- 58:37Speaker 1: what the cocony do like to eat. They fed on
- 58:40Speaker 1: them to the extent that they out competed the cocony
- 58:43Speaker 1: and weren't any more cocony. And this is like bad
- 58:46Speaker 1: aquarium management, horrible, And the fact that there aren't cocony
- 58:50Speaker 1: in there is not important except that, uh now there
- 58:54Speaker 1: were just a whole bunch of Mice's shrimp in here
- 58:57Speaker 1: with no predator except for the lake trout. The lake
- 59:03Speaker 1: trout the fry ate a ship ton of the mices shrimp,
- 59:08Speaker 1: and because of that, their population exploded. The problem with
- 59:13Speaker 1: that is mices shrimp can only sustain a lake trout
- 59:16Speaker 1: to such a size, and then the lake trout has
- 59:18Speaker 1: to go eat something else. So the lake trout started
- 59:21Speaker 1: praying on native fish, particularly the bull trout. It became
- 59:28Speaker 1: such a problem that in the mid nineties there were
- 59:31Speaker 1: only like a thousand uh bull trout left. So this
- 59:37Speaker 1: got identified as a major problem. And I think in
- 59:41Speaker 1: when like all the bull trout protections really started, it
- 59:44Speaker 1: became a threatened species like yes, a protection right yea. Um,
- 59:49Speaker 1: So these tribes recognized this as a problem, and the
- 59:52Speaker 1: state recognized it as a problem, and they got together
- 59:55Speaker 1: and they were like, Okay, we need to like solve
- 59:58Speaker 1: this somehow. The state it pushed really really hard for
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: um like an angler based intervention in this whole situation,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: and they tried that for a while. The tribes instilled
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: or installed what they call mac Day's mcinaw is another
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: word for a lake trout um, and it was basically
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: like a lake trout fishing derby. And in the first
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: like year that they did this, I think the annual
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: take was something like nine lake trout um. Recently, you're
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: never going to catch him with rod and real Man,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Well recently it's come to that that never gonna catch him.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: You're never gonna like get them all. You're never gonna
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: dn it with Robb. In order to get all of them,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: you literally have to like poison the body of water
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: and start over. You know, it's like not possible. So
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Montana Fish and Wildlife kind of my understanding of as
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: they pushed back on this for a while and they
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: were like, no, we really want this to be angler base.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: We really want this to be angler base. The tribe
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: saw the writing on the wall and eventually the state
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: and the tribe kind of got together on this and
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: they said, Okay, let's do something else. And now what
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: you got going on is they've turned it into kind
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: of a commercial fishery. Uh. They basically do a bunch
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: of trawling and just netting and all sorts of stuff,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: and they're processing these lake trout and getting them out
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: to restaurants and private buyers and all sorts of stuff.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: And it's actually made starting to make a measurable difference
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: in the population. Now again, we've like talked about how
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I guess I've kind of talked at you about how
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: like you can't get all the lake trout out without
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: poisoning them. Um. Their goal is not to do that.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Their goal is to get the population down to about
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: seventy or down seventy of what it is. And if
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: they can accomplish that through this like commercial fishery they've developed,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: then they projected the bull trout will um recovery, which
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: is a way better situation, and you wind up with
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: another bull trout stronghold. And that's my book report. I'm
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: looking at this note that says, uh, in two thousand twelve,
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: they estimated that there are one point five million lake
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: trout older than one year old. I know that, but
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: they still have regulations on them, right, Like Brody was
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: up fishing lakers, but they have like slot limits on
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: them and stuff. We ought to call Brodie. Yeah, I'm
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: not I'm I'm I'm honestly not too sure about that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: He was up catching lakers right up there. But it's
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: like you'd have to have a balance. Take all the
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: big ones, leave the small ones, so they eat the
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: micea shrimp, so that the misa stram don't eat all
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: the zooplankton, so that the cocony have sounding to feed on.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: The cocon have already been like totally extirpated from there,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: and being a non native, I think it's kind of
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: like a beside the point sort of thing. I don't
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: think we're trying to I don't think like the management
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: of the cocony fisheries really anything like that they're kind
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: of going for in this. I think this is very
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: much bull trout exclusive. Brody, you know when you were
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: up on Flathead Lake fishing lakers. Yeah, was this some
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: kind of like a size limit or slot limit or
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: something like that. Yeah, you're not allowed to keep them
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: between thirty and thirty six. I think it's what it is, dude,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I don't know, man, You think they'd want to pick
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: breeders out of there if they're trying to reduce the population.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: But I don't know, because you're allowed to keep a
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: baunch of them. You know that. I don't know what
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: the daily is, but a daily limit? All right? Talk
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: later straight from Brody slot limit. I wish they would
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: explain the why behind some of their regulations. That'd be
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: a great book. You could get the second book you
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: get the reg book, yeah, and the other that says why,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: because I always wonder, like you look at that kind
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: of stuff and they promote this and say this, but
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: then the regulation doesn't make sense. We had a we
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: had a question about the why in a regulation one time,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: and it even said that I can't remember. I don't
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: even I don't remember the rag. I don't remember the state.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: But they had said that like, as a rule, they
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: don't know it wasn't whylming, it's something whylming. As a rule,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: they don't archive the reasoning. Meaning when there's a proposed
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: regulation change and people testify like for instance, this bear,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: like this this bear thing in Washington. I don't know
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: if it's true in Washington, but this guy was saying
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: in their state, you're gonna be like, do we have
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: a spring bear hunter or not? The outcome is memorialized
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: in the law, but they don't do anything to record there,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Like well, why, yeah, I don't you know what it was.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: I remember executing now. It was why a nonresident, if
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: he's hunting in a wilderness area has to have a guide.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: And you go like, why it must be to protect
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: the guiding industry. They say, is to protect safety. And
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: we went to a guy like, well why is it?
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: He goes, we don't record the why. So there's an
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: argument and there's a vote. We care about the outcome
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: of the vote, and no one writes down what was
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: said about it. Yeah, but that's like we need that
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: to educate the people. Like they're like, it's like with
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: my kids. Man, They're like, why it doesn't matter, it
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: doesn't matter, why that's Lake Trout. They get crazy though
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: that up in the Idaho last year went to priest
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: and it was like the I just I didn't even
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: know how to catch him. I just got told like
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: that were out there. We were just um like on
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: a family trip and I drove out with my back.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: I had my bass boat up there with electronics and
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I just drove out to a spot and it was
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: like ninety ft and there was nothing, and it dropped
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: down into hundred and fifty feet and the fish started
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: at ninety and they dropped all the way down to
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: the bottom and a hunt and fifty feet and then
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: must there was literally hundreds of thousands of light trout. Yeah,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: every drought everything, everyone. Yeah, we did. We called them all,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: took them back and lit a fire and ate him
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: and everyone loved him, just like picked him off the
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: folk and it was that's what we called him. We
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: actually end up um you know, fill it in him
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: some of them and uh freezing them and still got
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: him at home. Then we give you a tip on
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: being an American. Yeah, fill it that was going to Yeah,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: and that's not the only one. First thing was right, Yeah,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: I like the freedom. I've ever noticed how the meat
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: color changes on trout depending on their size, the mica
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: shrimp versus like so in Idaho, the small ones, like
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: he was talking about, the small ones eat the mica shrimp.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: They're super pink, right, bright pink and as they get bigger,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: they turned white, like because they started fish. Northern Pikeman
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: though up there, Yeah, they started eating fish and their
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: meat turns white from pink. We talked about that recently,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: the rebranding of the Northern Pikeman though. Yeah, it's an
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: interesting one. Um. Alright, so here's why why you guys.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I got a couple of questions for you about this
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: about being professional bass fishing. First, each of you like
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: concisely layout. Well, I'm gonna give you two things. I
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: want you each to concisely layout, like where you sit
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: in the realm of like where you're at in your career.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: And then I want one of you to walk through
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: what's the progression of like how you get there? Meaning
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: if you I don't really know about baseball, but let's
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: just say it would be like you play t ball,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: then you play like Little League. Then presumably you play
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: like high school, college miners, majors, whatever the hell do
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: One of those you guys can decide amongst yourself who
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: does the the progression the first time you know where
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: you're at, I'll take the progression. Uh So in our careers,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: first of all, I gotta find who's pulling my court
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: and I am going to kill him. Yep. That's that's
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: definitely under my foot, my bad progression, my career. Let's see,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: I've been doing it. Gosh, I just finished up my
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: eleventh season, so I am. It seems like yesterday I
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: was one of the rookies and now I'm more like
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: one of the veterans. But I'm not old. Yeah, I'm like,
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: you're like an old timer. I'm like an old timer
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: doing it for eleven years, but I'm not old. That
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: makes sense just because I started young. So um, there's
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: probably a lot of people your age that did it
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: for eleven years and haven't had the success and thus
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: aren't doing it anymore. I'm guessing right, Yeah, and I
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: would I would say majority of the guys, like your
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: average age is older. Now you look at extreme sports,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: like guys are done when they're twenty five or twenty six.
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Majority of the guys who don't start and qualify historically
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: until they're probably mid thirties or early forties. What's what's
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: old for professional bass fisherman? Well, our oldest guy and
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: I was, and he can still please. He won, he
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: won in the last couple of years. Yeah, but he's
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: like an exception. Right, He's one of the best we've
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: ever had. He's been doing it professionally longer than we've
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: both been alive when I made this, when I made
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: the Elite Series, and I started fishing in two thousand
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: and fifteen, so I started competing the second tournament, third
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: time of the year, was on Toledo Bend, and like,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: I didn't know what I was doing, Like I made
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: it too early, and I'm just grind and trying to
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: compete with these best guys in the world. And Rick
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Klan got on stage and he was coming second after
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: day one, giant bag, a huge bass, and he's like, yeah,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I caught him off a spot I found in four
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: which was which was when I was born. And I
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: was like, I've got some work to do. That's some
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: time to make. Uh. So I guess like I would be.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: I feel like I'm just coming into my prime. Is
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: where I feel like I'm thirty four. Just turn thirty four.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: So Brandon's also done every single thing about you can
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: possibly do in the fishing industry, Like he's at the peak, pinnacle,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: top one percent of bass anglers. Okay, so that's that's
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: what I want to like, what are your like, if
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: you had to do a bio that was really talking
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: your ship up, what would the bio say, uh, five
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: time Elite Series champion, Uh, two thousand seventeen Angler of
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: the Year, two thousand ten National Championship. That was important.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: That's how it's That's what That's what I'm looking for.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Is that kind of stuff. Yeah, Like that's like the
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: written accolades stuff. But for me, those are just titles
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: and trophies. You know, like that's not why I do it. No,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: don't no, you know, I'm just like this is I'll
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: be frank with you all the like Seth knows about this,
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: all this, I don't know the first thing about it. Yeah,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: So that I mean to win five is like is
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: a big thing. When I won Angler of the Year,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: let's see called bass Fishermen of the year, there's a
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: lot of species, well it is, but it is called
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: the bass master Angler of the year. I mean, that's
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: that is what the trophies bad. We don't want to
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: beat up on the salt water guys or the walleye guys.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: I don't want to take a Yeah, and so that
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: at that time I think there had been forty six
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: or forty seven of those titles awarded, but only had
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: been won by twenty one guys, so you know several.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: It's not random. It's not random. No, it's not luck.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: There's too many variables to make it luck when you've
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: done it consistently over and over. But a guy can
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: get lucky and do it once, but to do it
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: over and over, that's not luck. Right. That speaks to something, man,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It wasn't like that he
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: had like you know whatever, like it happened to be
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: on the right end of the lake. And you know,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: so I think, like, but I feel like I'm just
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: coming into my prime right, like I'm starting to understand everything.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: And in the fishing world, there's two sides of it. Rather,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: there's the fishing side and then there's the business side.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: Because we're all independent contractors. We don't have team contracts
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: like you do in the NFL, you know, major League Baseball,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: all of that word, and we individually have to go
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: seek our business relationships. Those don't come to us as
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: you don't have an agent. No, I do it all
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: on my own. Some guys have agents, but like, I
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: don't like that disconnect, Like I want to talk to
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: the person that's making the decision. So that also when
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: they have to call in, they're like, hey, we're not
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: gonna pay you anymore, they have to call me. It's
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: it's a lot harder to call me and tell me
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: versus I can just keep paying. We're gonna cut your guy.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: We've never talked to him, but we're gonna cut your guy,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: you know. And so I like building that relationship with
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: those people. How many okay, so how far like if
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: if you're let's say you could partment I'm trying to
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: think of how to put this. Let's say you could
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: like like, uh, you're like a top ten or top
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: tier bass fishermen, Um, how many of them are there? Like? Like,
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: how many guys are sort of your peers right now?
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: And are and are and are you guys peers? Yes?
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: So me and Carl Fish on the same circuit, which
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: is the bass Master lead series that is the original
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: so B A S S and bass Master that's the
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: original tournaments circuit that's been around for and you guys
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: both so you guys would compete against one another. Yeah, okay?
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: And how many of how many of you are there?
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: At that caliber. And are all those people are all
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: those one hundred making their living fishing? Are some of
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: them still like doing roofing and stuff? Majority or not,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: I would not making majority are not making their living fishing?
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: They either have. And that's why I say a lot
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: of guys probably start historically at an older age because
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: they've either got a business that has been built up
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: where they can take time away from it where they
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: can go and try to compete or try to qualify
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: to compete, or they've sold a business or something of
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: that route. Now that that's changing, the average age is
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: dropping drastically, um with the influx of like college and
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: high school programs, So that like as big as a
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: business as bass fishing seems to be, it is. You look,
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you look at all the hook and bullet sports. Um,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: here's one that like can compete on national television. Right,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: So it doesn't support a hundred full time fishermen. Crazy, huh.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: We have that. We have that conversation all the time,
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: and Carl talk about that because dude, there's easily a
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: hundred like strike. They kind of did, and they kind
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: of tried, and they've tried everything to to make it happen,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: because that's it's from your from how the Payles's perspective,
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: it looks like we're all just absolutely killing a big
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: trucks boats. But it's just not the case like Fox
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: for coats of money office gig. I mean, I don't
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: know who is um. I mean, that's that's the tricky part, right,
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: is like each angler is an individual business out for
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: themselves that also operates as a whole driving the machine
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: that gives us the platform to perform and promote our business.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: That they're also running a business, right Like, so everybody
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: wants to be profitable. The tricky part is is that
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: we're also competing for all of the same endemic sponsorship.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: But that's why you guys got to be more like
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: the dudes who play like the more like the MLB
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: players or NFL players. You have the league like the NFL, right,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: but the league has a deal with the players collectively.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Steve's dropping mad education about sports. Now did we talk
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: about that shirt? Dirt got me. DRT got me a
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: T shirt of a dude like like slamming a basketball
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: and it says touchdown. Yeah, I don't mean, I know,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: I'm sucking this whole sports analogy thing when you guys
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: should be bailing me out. What I'm saying, how do
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: you not like, so there's the what's the organization that
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: there's two organizations? Right, Yes, there's really two. There's yep,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: b A s S. Which is the Bass Angler Sportsman Society.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: That one's been around the longest, and then uh, the
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: newest one is Major League Fishing, and so like, we're
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: not going to get into that whole debacle. But they
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: don't live without the Anglers, so we we have to
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: have each other. But then they got so they're creating
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: this situation where I mean, maybe God bless them, probably
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: nicest guys on the planet, but they're creating a situation
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: where their organization relies on these hundred or so individuals.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: But these hundreds so individuals all have to compete against
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: each other and have no like collective way to uphold
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: the organization. I feel like it would be prime for
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: it would be prime for you guys to get all
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: like up in their business. It's it's what you're talking
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: about is probably the number one thing that needs like
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: fixing talking about in our sport. That's like we need
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: it needs to happen a hundred percent, but it's just
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: it's such a struggle to get the hundred anglers. Like
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: what you're what you're getting is you're getting twenty guys
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: that are coming in that don't have any money, don't
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: have any support. They're just really good outdoorsman, sportsman, fishermen.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: They've grinded and they've made it. Now they find themselves
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: in the top hundred guys in the world, and now
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: they've got big entry fees, traveling all over the country,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: high expenses. And then you've got mid range guys that
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: have been doing it, got through that early storm, are
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: getting some sponsors and support, but half making it. And
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: then you've got this top percent that are making really
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: good money, big sponsorships and working with all this stuff.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: So you've got like basically three groups that one guy's going,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I don't want any entry fees and make the payouts
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: a little bit lower so I can survive. And you've
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: got another group that like jack the entry fees up.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: I want to compete for way more money. So you
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: put them all in a room and everyone just has
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: all these different opinions and you're like, can't come up
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: with this where we should be all coming together, So
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: let's make it better. If you make it to top
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: hundred guys in the world, you should be getting paid
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: no matter what, and then lift everyone up and everyone
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: make money. But don't no matter which way they try
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: and do it, they just can't get it because the
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: top tier guys are probably and not in the mood
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: to talk about guys. Yeah, and it would take the
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: top tier instrument to want to do something. If that
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: top ten fifteen guys with big names, big sponsors got
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: together and said this is what we're going to do,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: we could possibly make a change. But that also they
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: tried that, but they went a different way, which is
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: what happened with Major League Fish and it didn't work.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: So now you kind of got two split groups. But
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: that's a different story. But now we're sort of back
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: to fighting again. Okay, how we're going to make it
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: better for everyone right now? And for me it's lost
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: a little bit because even in my story, I want
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: to make it better because the way I looked at
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: it is if I make it to the top hunter
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: guys in the world, I've made it. I'm going to
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: It's that's it, I'd like, I would think, And so
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: I'm like I just risked it all, sold everything, grinded,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: didn't see my family for years, moved to America, had
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: to move back. I went broke, did all the rest,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: made it, and then halfway through my first year, I
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: was in the worst position of my entire life. And
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: then a year later I was broke in debt and
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: gone out of the out of the out of the elites,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: and I was like just chewed up and gone, and
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: I was like, what just happened? And that happens to
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: dozens and dozens of guys every year, and just lucky
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: for me, I just decided not to quit, and I
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: fought back, made it, got back, and then I end
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: up winning, and my career grew and I come back
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: into it and now I'm in a better position. But
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: I could have just went away and just been another guy.
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: That is that is the bottom tier of guys, just
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: like a revolving door, like sometimes because those guys they're
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: not getting they don't like boat sponsors, they're like buying
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: their own boats, their own entry fees. The guys first
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: coming in they've got they've got a mission ahead of them.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: When they call Brandon and I a lot, and and
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: certainly're like, I just made it through the nations, through
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: the opens, what can I expect? And I'm like, get ready.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: But also guys have made it through college and two
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: years later they're millionaires, like have one millions of dollars.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: So it's so hard to put a negative. I'm like,
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: I don't want to tell negative to you because you
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: could come in and just crush it and be the
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: biggest name. But the reality is if you don't, this
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: is what could happen. Does a pro always make more
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: no matter how much you're making and winnings? Are you
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: always making more on sponsorships? Or can to the winnings
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: get so good that you're blowing the sponsorships away, which
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: just the purse depends on the stage of your career
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: as well. Right if you come in early on and
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: you have a blowout season, for sure, your winnings are
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: gonna outweigh your sponsorships, and the longer year around, your
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: sponsorship dollars start to grow because it's like, you make it,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: but then you also but then you have to prove
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: yourself at that level. And I think the biggest issue
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: that we have in the fishing community from the business
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: standpoint is identifying what it is to be a professional angler, right,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: we compete at the top level, but anybody can go
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: by a jersey and put logos on it which devalues
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: what we do, and then that they can do that,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: but they don't get the fish in the tournament exactly.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: But there's so many other avenues now to create exposure
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and create yeah, and there's not there's not like a
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: set standard of like this is what a professional angler is,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: this is what they should make. I've always thought that
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: if we take the top hunter guys in the Elite series,
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: take the bottom guy and make him, you know, worth
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: a hundred thousand dollars in sponsorship every year, everybody above
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: that will just make more money, right, because everybody's not
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: gonna make the same amount of money and sponsorships. We
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: don't want that because that would defeat the purpose of
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: hard work and trying to evolve. And so the biggest
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: thing is, like, make that bottom guy worth a hundred
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: grand and sponsorship, and then everyone's just going to be
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: a percentage of value more of able above that guy,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: depending on how much extra you do on the business side,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: what's the what's a big like, what's a big win
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: in dollars. Like, what's a big tournament win hunter grand
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: that's what an Elite series event? Pace? Okay, what's the Classic?
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: And it has been five hundred and then two days
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: ago to college kids won a million dollars. That's at
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: fishing bass fishing at the US Open. Yeah, they won
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: two tundras. That college kids two tundras, two boats and
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: a million dollars. Yeah. Everything. When I sold my first book,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: I'm like, wow, that's enough money left for next month
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: for us where you see that? What that what's happening there?
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: And you're like, we've we've made it to the top
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: guys of the sport and then that's going on there.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: So it's kind of like they win to win that.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: So it's a Bass Pro Shops US Open in so
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: that's the top of the top. And this is the
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: first year they've ever had that. They just ran at
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: one random tournament. This is it. You qualify getting and
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: then on the last day this group of angle is
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: going to fish for a million bucks. So they did
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: one thing to yeah that they have regional events. Yeah,
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: that's like, they have regional events and then if you
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: place in so high in your regional event, then you
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: qualify for this championship and then you fish what was it,
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: two days? We can't compete, Like, if you've paid an
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: entry fee over, I believe you can't compete in that event.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: Some of them, That's what I'm saying, Like some of
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: the guys I fall like that fish the n w
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: T National Walleye Tour qualified for that event. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: why wouldn't you? So they're giving away more, okay, but
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: it's just interesting. It just doesn't make us want a
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: million bucks fishing in a terment that you can't fish
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: because you're two pro. Yes, but when you win, your
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: tournament is not a million bucks. Yeah, and the guy
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: that finished, the guys that finished seventh, eighth, ninth, all
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: made more than us when we finish in that sort
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of position. But yeah, we have entry fees. That's the
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: one thing. If we could get rid of them. We
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: have fifty grand plus of entry fees per year. So
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: that's the killer right there. If we didn't have that. Yeah,
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: five grand. The derby, Yeah, they the tournament the other day.
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I think the top ten. I think two those teams
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: were professional wallete anglers John John Hoyer. He they took
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: seven and it was think fifteen grand, Yeah, probably made
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: more than he made the entire year wallet fish all,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: you know, we never did. I'm ready to move on
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: the way. Other stuff we got back up. We got
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: back up because we didn't get through the Yeah, but
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: maybe those make sense. Like like I've had people say like, well,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: how is a person? How do you become a writer? Yeah,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: but I've never met two of them that did it
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: the same way, so I can't really answer the question.
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: It's it's actually super simple because there's to get to
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: the bass Master Lead Series. There's only two ways to qualify.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: That's what I want to hear. So you've got the
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: bass Master Open Series, which is three separate regions with
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: three events per region across the United and you have
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: to do what in those? So then you have to
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: fish that entire series at least one region. Right, So
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: we'll just say you fish the Northern Opens three events.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: You fish those three place in the top three in
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: points each time, top three in cumulative points, of course,
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: so it buffers you from a bad day, like you
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: can still make up. The problem is is that one
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: bad day probably eliminates you. So those those have three days,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: so you have to have nine good days over three
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: different bodies of water at three different times a year,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: and if you with one of those days, you're never
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: going to keep up. Yeah, you can't make it up.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: It's nearly impossible. Uh So you got to do that, yep.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: So that's how you can qualify through one of those
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: um or the only other option is to win what
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: is now called the Bass Nation. It used to be
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: the Bass Federation, but it's now called the Bass Nation.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: And that's like your Weekend Warrior, guys, that's what I
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: want in two thousand ten to qualify for the Elite Series.
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: I think they should change the name back to Bass Federation.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: I liked it because everything is a nation. Though. Yeah,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: I like bad Bass Federation and I still say it
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: all the time because that's what I came from. But
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: I mean that was then approach to yeah, and now
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: now there's high school and college programs. So you go
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: to a high school tournament in Texas, five d plus boats,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: two kids on a team for boats, and then college kids.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: College kid can qualify for the Classic, which is our championship,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: but they can't qualify for the Elites. So in the future,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: when all these like trained dudes come up. It's going
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: to change the playing field. Lout. Yeah, that's why the
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: talent pool is gonna Well, that's why the average age
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: is dropping, right, because there's youngers on the water. Ah. Well,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: I think we've brought it up. I want to Can
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: we ask about the bass Master Classic real quick? Oh? Yeah, okay?
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: Is that like you said, you're at the peak, but
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: you haven't won that yet? So is that like the
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: shining Star that you that's he hasn't won. That's it,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: that's it? And I finished second? D Yeah, I've got
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: top tens. I finished second. Like did they pay it
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: for finishing second? Yeah? So that was two thirteen. First
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: place at that time was five grand. I got forty
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: five grand? Holy how's that food dollar difference? We'd have
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: to know what We'd have to know this some one
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: do you guys can figure this out? What is the
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: relationship of gold to silver in actual value? And we'll
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: see if that makes sense the Olympics, if they gave
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: you an ounce of gold, Let's say your thing is
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: an ounce in the Olympics, they just gave you four
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: hundred bucks, but ounces of silver is not ship Yeah,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: so it would actually be worse than what I did,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: it might be better than the Olympics. Silver is currently
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: twenty four dollars an ounce and gold is eighteen hundred
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: dollars an ounce, way better than the Olympics. Better. I
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: haven't done the math. Do the math all the way, Phil,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: So you want to explore the relationship between how much
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: is silver Prounce so undred? And then would you win
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: what the other guy win? Okay? When I was like
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: when I was in eighth grade, I could have done that. Yeah, yeah, exactly,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: that's too much ad some division here. I think we
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: didn't have like a bubble over Field's head or all,
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: like the computations are going through. Just be like making
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: a long shot. Start adding in all the wind dies,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: MAgric pressures. I'm shooting from three thousand to six thousands,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: you know, just start. Yeah, you gotta like he's got
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: to be running that similar kind of business over there.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: I grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. You know. Yeah, I
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: was gonna say, not far from my dad's house at all,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: like the sporting good Shot where I shopped at his
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: parents shop exactly. His brother runs DNR Sports. Give our
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: Michigan tags. When Yeah, I think I think this math
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: is right. If the ratio we're the same, If you're
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: forty five thousand dollars, let's call that the baseline, then
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: his winnings should have been three point three million of
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: silver verse gold. Yeah, so he's so what they're doing
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: is more fair exactly. Yeah, that's good. Did you like
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: to know what questions are come up? I'm gonna ask
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: the next question, but I can tell you what the
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: next question is. I'll just tell you the next question.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: When you guys were kids, was it just that you
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: were always better than everybody at fishing? Like from day one?
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: That was that was me that no matter what, like
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: you just go out because good at all sports, could
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: do everything. But like if we fished, I just like
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: destroyed everyone. They were like, what is no matter what?
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: But yeah, if no matter what. But it was because
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: I lived out there, Like I would bring my mates
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: and they had been doing whatever a week, and I'd
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: been like fishing three days a week, so I knew
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: exactly what was going on or whatever. But we basically
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: between it's most of everyone has the same story, but
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: we just spent more time in the water than everyone else.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Like I never went to school, maybe four times a
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: week and fish Friday, Saturday, Sunday, riding my bike, taking
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: Mom take me somewhere wherever I could go. I just
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: needed to be fishing. But you you feel that it
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: was like you're attributing it to I am spent out. Yeah,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: but like there has been sort of like a native
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: talent aspect. Yeah, I think you're just no matter how
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: much time. Yeah, there's definitely a thing We've spoken about
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: it where no matter how much time you spending the water,
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: some people just have it in your and it's with
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: hunting and whatever. You're just like that guy just has
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: it and he spent a bunch of time in the water.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: Some people spend a ton of time in the water
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: and can never quite never get there. Like a lot
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: of making the connection. Americans asked me all the time,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: how do you make it? I'm it's come from Australia,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: and I'm like, you lived in the country old time
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: fish for bass. Since you're a kid and have done
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: it with your dad's and your grandfather's that's what I'm
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: competing against. These guys that have learned from their dads
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: and their grandfathers, say, hard to beat because they've got
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: so much good knowledge but sometimes if you just don't
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: quite have that aspect, the tournament thing just brings a
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: whole another thing with money and making fast decision, having
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: a time limit on it, and being able to read
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: the water instantly make fast decisions. That's what makes you
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: kind of a good tournament angler. But most people just
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: had that knack and they had that thing where they
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: couldn't do anything else but fish, and they just understand
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: what how those bass and fish work, just from purely
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: having that bit of talent, but also just ridiculous. A
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: manito or gal is like an adjective that you guys use.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: He's yeah, it's the natural he's er that I worked for.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: We just call guys fishy. But you know that guy's
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: pretty fishy. Yeah, but that's a new thing. How long
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: ago was that? That was I don't know, mental, right,
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Because you take all the guys out there, they have
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: access to all the same technology. Mechanically, guys are pretty
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: even across the board. So then it only leaves one thing,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: and that's mental that separates the guys that do it
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: at the highest level versus the guys that don't make it.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: But when you're Brandon just I mean, same question to
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: you when you were little? Was it just it you
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: just caught fish. I feel like I always caught him
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: and but it was weird, is like I feel like
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I was just that's what I was born to do.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: Like I was I started out fishing. There's pictures of
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: me where like I've got cheerios on my little uh gosh,
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: I can't even think what it's called. You sit a
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: baby in something and there little high chair there we go,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: so like the high chair with the little tray and
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: I got cheerios all over it, and I'm holding a
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: fishing rod like little bleached blonde toe head and I'm
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: holding a fishing rod like I couldn't even walk at
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: that time. And so it was almost like there was
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: just always something that made me tick when it came
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: to fishing. And uh as far as like was I
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: better than kids? When I was younger, I didn't really
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: fish with anyone my age, Like there wasn't It wasn't
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: a thing then like it is now. A lot of yeah,
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: brand Nie story are very similar, even on the other
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: side of the country. But we always had like an
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: older guy or a father figure that took you and
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: like instead of hanging out with your mates. As much
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: of your age, you sort of separated a bit from that,
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: and we're more like inclined to go with the old guy.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: I was going to show you and teach yourself because
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: you're like, you knew he knew more than you, and
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: you wanted to learn what he knew. And so you're
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: always always always sitting in the back of someone's truck
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: if they're going fishing. Is there a seat, now, I'll
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: climb in there, and I'm in there, like I wanted
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: to learn what they knew, and then just progressed from there. Yeah,
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: we grew up around our lakes where we lived. We
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: definitely grew up fishing with friends, but mostly I like
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: fished with old men. Yeah, because my dad was an
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: old man. He had me when he was old hung
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: out with old guys, and these guys I like grew
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: up around old guys that were retired, so all they
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: did was and that was kind of my main sort
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: of exposure to it because people were fished a lot.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: You sort of progress, like you progress too, from bait
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: fishing off the bank. You meet the older guy that
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: fishes from the bank with bait, and you do that,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: and then that's great, and then you meet another guy
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: that like showed you your first lure and how to
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: cast it, or you'd go with him and they would
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: troll and like and yeah, that's what that's generally what
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: that's how the bass fishing starts is because you get
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: them to eat live bait and everything's cool. And then
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: when a fish follows that, you trick a fish not
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: eat the live bait. You trick them to eat that face.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: It's something different. That's when most kids brains are like,
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: it's switches. And then all you want to do is like,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: look at the different Luis colors. That's why they're doing that,
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: And that's kind of the addiction a lot of us get.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I think that's what that attraction is, to cast and
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: retrieve and little fish, and it's a much more it's
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: a different connection, I think. Uh here's my next question, Brandon.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: We covered you on the show before I've heard it,
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I've heard my name come up. Okay, tell the story.
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: Do you are you comfortable talking about the story Mississippi
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: ra Yeah, oh yeah, we got that rule change. If
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: I remember right. We covered it from a sympathetic lens. Yeah,
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: did we cover sympathetically you guys did a good job
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: on it. Yeah yeah, meaning like totally could picture or
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: something like that happening. So this was my third year
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: on tour. I had one one Elite Series event in
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: two thousand twelve. Two thousand thirteen came around and I
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: was having a super tough year. I was way down
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: in the points, wasn't going to qualify for the bass
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: Master Classic Championship. And at that time they had a
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: rule where it was winning your end, so if you
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: want an Elite Series event, you got a birth into
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: the Classic. And I was so far down in the
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: points it was late in the year. My only opportunity
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: to make the Championship was to win an event like
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: an outright wind, like have to win first, no grand
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: second place doesn't cut it. And I just I had
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: a week where I had well, let me take a
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: step back. The year before, we fish on the same
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: body water. I had figured out a pattern. Mother nature
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: brought a bunch of rain flooded the Mississippi River. That
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: pattern went away. I didn't adjust in time two roles,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: but not now. Now I'm contentilated by that. Walking me
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: through that a bunch of floods that what does that mean?
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: So that's the biggest difference I think in like what
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: we do and being able to do well consistently is
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: adapting to mother nature. Right, So, like every other sport
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: goes and plays on some sort of field that's like
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: manucured or you know, it's like you're in this controlled environment.
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: We're like bowlers. Yeah, we're fishing. We're fishing in a
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: We're fishing against another living creature that lives their life
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: based on a different set of rules than what we
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: live ours on. Right, Like we're very judged by a
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: calendar and a time clock in a twenty four hour day,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: when they're really just based on sunrise, sunset and whatever
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: mother nature throws at them. You can't. It's like a
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: football if the football was alive, it's the it's a
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: golf course that the whole changes off. You've hit the bowl, yeah,
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: and and so like that changes, right. So you get
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: a bunch of rain the Mississippi River it's narrow up
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: on those upper pools, it's not like it is down
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: toward New Orleans, and so a bunch of rain rises
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: that water. And I was catching these fish out in
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: the main river, which is where all that current pushes well,
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: when you are. So bass are very oftentimes ambush feeders,
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: so they want to set up in a place and
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: ambush the prey as it comes by, right, So they're opportunistic,
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: so they'll sit in current seams and behind these current
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: breaks and things like that. Well, when you it's similar
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: to a water hose. So people would think that you
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: actually get more current when you get more influx of water,
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: But it's like if you stick your thumb on the hose,
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: you can spray it further. Even though there's less amount
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: of water coming through the end of the hose. R
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: it's creating more pressure. And so at a certain level
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: in the river, those fish have to set up in places.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: But when it comes up high, it blows over all
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: those wing dams, blows out over those breaks, and then
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: those fish can just roam. They can set up anywhere,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: and so it's a lot harder to find target. Yeah,
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: they can just go and roam around. And so the
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: water comes up, they roam around. You lose your target.
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: And you know, we only have eight hours in a day,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: so you have to be very efficient. Two rolls around,
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: I'm at the bottom of the pack, have to win one.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: This pattern starts to play out that I had found
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: the year before. The weather holds out and day one,
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: my whole game plan was I was gonna go catch
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: three or four small mouth. They were going to be
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: bigger than the large mouth. They were gonna be, you know,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: three to four pounders. And then I was a plan. Yep,
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: this is the plan, and then I'm gonna go large
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: mouth fishing. But the rule at that time was that
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: in Minnesota, because you have to have some of each, no, no,
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: just large mouth or much more common in that part
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: of the Mississippi River, when I go catch five big smallmouth,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: because it was nearly, it was harder, like it was
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: hard to catch five small mouth, and so like in
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: practice it was a very short window that small mouth
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: would feed very early. I would catch them early, but
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: I didn't feel like I could catch five obviously if
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: you wouldn't fill out the bay. Obviously, if you catch
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: five at some point you gotta bail and go fill up. Yeah,
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: but I'm doing the numbers in my head, like, Okay,
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: I'm if I catch fourteen fifteen pounds a day, I've
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: got a real legitimate shot to win. If I catch three,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: Why target the small mouth at all? Because they're bigger
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: than the large mouth. You have the opportunity at more
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: four to five pounds small mouth than you do large mouth.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: You can catch more two pound large mouth, but that's
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: not going to get you paid because you're never gonna
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: hit fifteen pounds exactly. But it's implausible that you're gonna
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: go catch five five pounds small It's possible, it's just
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: not probable. And you might have to at some point
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: haul ass over really quickly catch the ones you know
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: you'll catch finga. So my game catch you just you
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: might want to bring me on that wat. I can
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: do this kind of calculation for you mans on the
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: back of the boat, right and stuff down to calculating
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: switch to carps. You need to troll at one point
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: three not one point two. And uh. The unique thing
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: about the Mississippi River was it's a bordering water between
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: Wisconsin and Minnesota. Minnesota law at that time was they
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: took the most restrictive law of whichever state it was,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: and so they would so say laid out So Wisconsin said,
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: you're not allowed to coal once you put a fish
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: in the live weel. Because we keep all of our
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: fish alive. We weigh him in alive, we release them
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: alive back in the body of water. You get penalized
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: for it. And you're not allowed to call a dead one.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: So if one dies, if you don't take care of
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: them in your live, well you're stuck with him. You
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: kill a one pounder and you catch a four pounder,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: you can't you can't throw out the one pounder, and
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: so what if you eat them, Well, that's not allowed,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: not at the tournament. And so then so with Wisconsin
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: saying this is where it gets really confusing. I didn't
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: even understand this part of it. Yeah, so Wisconsin, No,
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: Wisconsin said you're not allowed to coal a bass once
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: it goes in your live, Well, you're done in Wisconsin waters. Yes,
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: And that was a rule that was not intended to
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: impact bass fishermen. It came from snagging salmon in the
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: rivers and when the salmon would go up to spawn,
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: guys with snag them, and it was a deal to
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: protect that fishery. But it was one of those things
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: where you know, it was just kind of a blanket statement,
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: like you were talking about earlier, with you know, putting
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: it into the constitution of the right to hunting fish
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: like you really need to lay it out, and that
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: wasn't so we had to play by that rules. That
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: would be in Minnesota you could cole but because it
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: was bordering waters, they take the Wisconsin law. Here's where
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: it gets really confusing. We got permits from the state
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: of Wisconsin to allow our tournament to coal, but because
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: it was a state law, then you couldn't col in
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: Minnesota to That's what happened. Yes, so see I was
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: I thought I was being sympathetic when I just thought
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: it was that you were like you crossed like a
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: sort of hard to interpret state line the year it's coming.
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: But I delayed the ground rules so everyone understood like
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: like why Minnesota Wisconsin? Yeah. Yeah, that's confusing enough in itself.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: So part of my game plan. One of my best
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: areas is in what I know is Minnesota. Right, it's
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: on the Minnesota side of the river. I'm fishing the
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: main river channel. One of my other best areas is
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: in what I think is Wisconsin. The reason I think
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: that is because pretty much every river I've ever been
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: on in the entire Lower forty eight, the main river
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: channel is what dictates a bound or a between you know,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: a county line or a state line or whatever that
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: may be. That holds true with the Mississippi River. For
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: probably of it, there happened to be this one section
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: where it comes out of uh pool seven and it
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: runs down the main river channel for about say a
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: mile mile and a half, and then it cuts across
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: this island, runs down a back channel for another mile
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: and then back out to the main river channel for
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: hundreds of miles because of some like arcane dispute about something. Yeah,
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: it's across an island that who knows they lost back
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: in some war between Minnesota Wisconsin. I don't know, but
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: like it just it goes back, goes behind the back channel.
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: So the what had happened is the second day, um
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: so day one, I catch them. I'm leading great, right
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: right in position where I need to be to make
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: the championship. And you do the whole small mouth large mouth?
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: I go, I catch four small mouth bengo, awesome, I
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: go catch another large mouth. I've got eighteen and a
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: half pounds. How okay, but how much time? Like when
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: did you bail on the small mouth plant eleven o'clock
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: and you had how how long did the fish? I
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: think that day I had till three o'clock, so then
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: I went just catching our big small mouth because they
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: would They're feeding window is super early, so during it
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: was just I got you. I figured out that this
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: was happening with you. So Day two rolls around, giant
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: storm rolls in. There's only really one thing that will
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: delay our events, and that's a thunderstorm tornado type activity.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: That's what we end up with. Day two delays it.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: So in my mind, I'm freaking out right. I'm leading
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: the event that I need to make our championship. My
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: bite is in the morning, and now I'm missing my
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: window of opportunity. What saved me is that right when
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: they delay, they just like they postponed the start. But
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: it all roll as long as long as it'll be
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: the same finish at the end of the day. So yeah,
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: we still end at the same time. So you're just
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: losing part of your eight always fishing daylight hours. Yeah yeah,
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: And so I'm, you know, obviously worried about this. Good
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: news is best don't live on a time clock, right,
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: they just go on Mother Nature cloud cover keeps the
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: light lower, which then helped those small mouth feed longer
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: throughout the day. So by the time I got to
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: my spot, they're biting good. I started what I think
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: is Wisconsin. I lose a bunch, shake it off, moved
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: to Minnesota, like coming on, button, do you I moved
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: in Minnesota and I catch four and I'm like, or, no,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: I caught five. I had five in Minnesota, Like, well,
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: it doesn't do me any good fish here any longer.
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: I'll go back to Wisconsin. Catch one more and I'll
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: have a really good bag because I had caught some
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: big small mouth. And I go back to Wisconsin or
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: what I thought was Wisconsin, catch one coal one more time,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: and then I go large mouth fishing, and I don't
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: call the rest of the day. And so I caught
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: six fish that day where I had cold That fish
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: where I thought was Wisconsin was a hundred feet south
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: of where that bordering line cuts into the back channel
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: hunter feet. Hunter feet cost me a hunter grain and
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: the Classic ended up winning the next You can do
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: that math quick, And then it got like reported everywhere. Yeah,
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: so what I don't know who or what turned me in.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: But I got a call that night at about ten
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: o'clock at night asking if I had fish to this area,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: and I'm like, yeah I did, and like, did you
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: call here? I'm like, just after they already handed you
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: the check. No, this is day two, so four days.
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: So I'm two days in. I've got a six pound lead.
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: And not very often is it easy, But that was
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: one of those weeks where just everything seemed like it
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: was on that river it's huge, like you pretty much
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: got it, and I felt like all I had to
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: do was just get to my spot cast and reil ement.
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: Very rarely is it that easy. But it was just
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: one of those weeks. Everything lined up and they call
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: me and you know, asking, hey, did you fish here? Yep?
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: Did you call here? Yep? Like you got Google maps
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: and like yep, Like pull it up. I see that
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: red line. Who's there the organization? So tournament director, we
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: have have a tournament director, and I'm talking to them,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: and instantly my heart sinks because I know when I
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: look at that line exactly what it is. And so
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: it was really was my own fault, right, It was
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: my fault of not looking specifically at where that bordering
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: water was. I took the assumption that the main river
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: channel was the boundary, and if I was on the
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: Wisconsin side, of the main river channel. I was legal,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: but I didn't know or realized there was that cut
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: through was their attitude. Um, the they that called you
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: was their attitude. Man, I know this is harsh, but
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: if we don't have rules, the whole world falls apart.
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: I knew, like obviously from my standpoint, I was what
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: was I at that time, like a year old kid.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: That's how old you were? Yeah, yeah, And so I
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: had to it would have been twenty five or twenty six,
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: and so I had to make a decision of how
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: I was going to approach it right. And at the
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: end of the day, it was my own fault, Like
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: obviously I didn't agree with it right. Because here's here's
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: what bothered me the most. If I would have forgot
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: to call right, if I would have forgot to release
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: my smallest one that was alive, put the bigger one
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: in and came to Waynes with six fish, I would
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: have only gotten a two pound penalty, because that's what
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: our penalty is in our rules if you bring six
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: fish to the live to the way in. But instead,
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: because I thought I was doing the right thing and
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: throwing one back, I got that day's weight disqualified all
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: the way just yeah that day, which dropped me down
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: to seventy third because I was only had one day's
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: wait and didn't make it. I did off one day's wait. Yeah,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: one day wait, did beat a couple of guys two
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: days and uh yeah, and so I just jokingly said,
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: I guess I'll just have to go win the next one,
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: and then I actually did. So you you thought you had, Like, Okay,
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: I could do two things here. I could start like
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: breaking stuff and having a having a fit and kind
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: of like do what feels natural, and I slight a
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: few moments of that, or I could or I could
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: just play the long game and pursue a career, which
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: actually ended up being probably one of the best decisions
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: in my career. But I mean I learned from it, right,
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: Like you guarantee if we're going into bordering waters now,
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: I am staring at every boundary. I can't remember we
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: talked about this when we were talking about that, but
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: ice a fish a stretch of the Delaware River which
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: flowed between New York and Pennsylvania, and they did a
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: really convenient thing there where they came together and made
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: a rag for the river. Yeah, Like it's like a
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: joint regulation. Yeah, so it's like you didn't need to
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: kind of like I don't know my like halfway or
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: not halfway, or if you catch a fish in the
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: middle of the river, you don't gotta like wonder what
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: to do about it, right, Yeah, is they're not going
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: to use their fins or their tail to swim back
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: across the river, like if you why you're fighting and
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: he kind of goals over to you know, Pennsylvania for
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: a minute and the rule makes no sense. But and
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: I mean gladly, I mean for everyone it worked out
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: better that it happened to me because the rule ended
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: up getting changed because it got so much publicity around
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: it that it actually is now no longer rule. So
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: do you feel like that was you know, like just
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: life career wise was really Yeah, yeah, life and career wise,
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: it was a win because you handled it with honor. Yeah,
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: it could have I definitely could have just sunk my
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: own ship breaking rods. Oh yeah. Yeah. And it took
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: a lot to not go down that route, but I
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: knew that there was that was not the right option
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: or the other way that's not good is to really
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: talk about what I've seen people do too is to
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: really start talking about like how stupid the rule is,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: how stupid the person is. And I mean, you have
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: to own your own mistakes, right, and when it came
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: down to it and you pull everything away, it was
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: my own mistake. You can be like, you know, it
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: was my own mistake. Yeah, however the rule, yeah, the
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: rule nobody agreed with. But I mean old yeah, twenty
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: five or twenty six due, I was totally irrational when
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: I was when I qualified. Huh yeah. How many more
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: Derbys did you have left in that season? Too? So
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: you're like there's still a chance. Yeah, yeah, there's there's
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: still a chance. And you made it, made it happen. Yeah,
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: I managed to win the next one running almost a
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: thousand miles in four days? Are you serious? And you're like, yeah,
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: almost almost nine miles in four days. I burned a
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: thousand dollars and fuel in four days. About the how
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: are you going? I ran all the way from Waddington,
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: New York, all the way out into Lake Ontario, past
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: the mouth, like a long ways between spots, like all
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: conditions being good, let's a glass, calm, no wind, You're
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: gonna average like around seventy miles because I mean time, right,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: You've got eight hours. The more casts you make, the
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: more opportunities you have. So wasting time while you're running
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: is you know, costing you more casts. But like walk
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: through the calculation in your head, right, like like what's
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: too much? Right? Uh? It depends on limits, So it's
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: only a certain spade you can get with that. But
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: some guys can run like eighty miles now and the
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: difference between seventy and eighty is massive. But I mean
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: it's a huge gamble. If you say I'm gonna blow,
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: you have eight hours, so you're like, I'm gonna defihing,
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna lose two hours of fishing time. Yeah, just
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: like you got. So when you're modern, you're probably like
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: in your head like you idiot, you idiot. Turn around.
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: It comes down to your practice. In that event, I
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: had two phenomenal days of practice out in the lake
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: and figured I could catch twenty pounds plus in forty
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: five minutes. And so if I had at least forty
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: five minutes out of an eight hour day, I would
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: make the run if the weather permitted. And out of
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: thirty two hours, I fished for ten. So you get
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: real granular about pounds per whatever. Yeah, and I mean
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: I did. I bought this St. Lawrence Seaway book that
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: I don't know how many hundreds of pages it is,
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: but I scrolled through that finding every gas stop, every
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: route that I could run, calculating minutes because I knew
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: that every minute was going to count in that event.
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: And I figured out like which gas docks you had
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: to pay cash, which gas dog you could pay with
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: a card because it was gonna be quicker if I
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: could pay with a card. And I mean all of that,
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: just like calculations by minute, because one cost can change
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: your whole life in this set, and it has done.
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: Like you can see, Yeah you hear about the Walleye
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: guys doing that. Um, they'll run like a hundred and
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: twenty miles, stop and get gas fish for an hour,
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: get like some you know, a couple of big bites,
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: run back and win just because they ran all the way.
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: They're caught a couple of thirty inches or whatever. It's
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: professional gambling pretty much. Man. Honestly, I have like visions
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: of the dude, uh like who just goes out on
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: the end of the dock and yeah, catches a bunch
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: of fatties, but he's just not gonna do that. Every day,
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: different people bet on you as are also like fantasy.
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: They started it um with Fox Sports, so we were
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: live on Fox Sports and they started like messing around
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: with some of the betting, like Fox Sports betting, and
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: I don't I don't think they've gotten it to the
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: point where they're betting on specific anglers. We have fantasy
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: fishing where you like creative fishing team of your guys,
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: but they're betting on like the weight and like of
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: a single fish or like the biggest bag or winning Wait,
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: things like that. We've got to the like betting on
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: an individual. Yet you want to be in like Pete
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: rose Man like start like what about a Calcutta? Is
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: that legal? And does that happen? We don't have it
- 1:59:26Speaker 1: in our events, I mean, but do you guys do
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: it on the sly like little background side boats? No,
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: I mean you'll have beds. I went to a Sharp
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: tournament one time, as I went there as a reporter.
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: I went to a Sharp tournament and the tournament had
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: its money, but it was nowhere near the money the Calcutta.
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: No one gave a sh about the actual tournament they
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: were there for the side that those guys operate at
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: a different like the dollar they're putting out entry phase
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: in fuel in today body they have and that's probably
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: underestimating it. For the for the Perch derby up at
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: Kanan Ferry that we're doing this, we're doing that and
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: when is it chet January January? Yeah, Yeah, there's a
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: Calcutta for that, there is. Yeah. Yeah, it's weird that
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: you wouldn't have invited me along. Well, we're gonna try.
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: We're trying. What's fine about something that you know we're
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: gonna get Uh, we're gonna try to get a bunch
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: of teams to go up and do it this year.
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: Oh bunch of teams hadn't mentioned it to me? Well,
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: you're gonna be You heard about this Hayden chat and
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: I just talked about the other night. Can I've got
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: a question. I've got a question for these guys that
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: you got. Are you pretty drunking we can see you? Yeah? Um,
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: So it's like five days before Seth and I head
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: out on on this Walleye tournament next summer. Yeah, what
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: is the biggest advice that you could give to us?
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: You know, just for for tournament fishing. Even though it's
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: a walleye tournament, it's still hours. We're chasing fish, we're
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: looking for fish. Let me tell you, I probably leeches.
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: You can probably do Yeah, you can do that. In
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: walleye tournaments. The open mind is a big one. And
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: not listening to the doc talk, right, not listening to
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: what all the other guys are saying, like this is
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: what you should be doing. I love that. You know.
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: The way I explain to people is you try to
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: ignore doc talk because here's the thing. Nobody knows what's
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: happening that week. If say, when's your tournament January? What
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: well this is? Or will the walleye tournaments be me
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: a bay? It's the first one, okay, so we say May.
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: The thing that I can guarantee is that nobody in
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: this world has ever fished for walleye Mayo, So nobody
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: knows what is going to happen on that body of water,
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: whatever your date is in May. So you have to
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: fish the conditions. You have to have an open mind
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: and not listening to that doc talk of like, oh,
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: this is what you have to do on this body
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: of water, because once again, they don't live by a
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: calendar and a time clock. We had a guy. We
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: had a guy that does this very very hard big
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: horn sheep hunt um and he was saying similar things. Says,
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: you can't hunt last year's like in this area, you
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: can't hunt last year's sheet. If you find a ram somewhere,
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: don't He's like, that's the one place I won't go. Look. Yeah,
- 2:02:42Speaker 1: it's like like we're talking seth like with the bison migration,
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: really like you have this set time frame that you
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: can hunt. If the weather permits, they move out and
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: they migrate, and if they don't, then you don't have
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: the opportunity that just spain at a get to l
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: hunt the last couple of years UM with brand and
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: up here. It's like elk hunting is identical to fish.
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: And once I figured out with the mapping and stuff,
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: I was like, this is like fishing. And so that's
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: why some anglers are good like looking at the maps,
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: the contours where they would see it trying you're trying
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: to figure out a pattern, and that's what we're doing.
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: We're like, what are the fish doing, what's the bait doing?
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: Because it's all about food and temperature and that's what
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: the elk are doing, like whether it's too much snow,
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: not enough, whether they can stay there enough food, what
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: concentrates them, like the currents, and say looking at the contours,
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: you're like, there's a good bench and that's what bass like,
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: that would be a good spot, and then you would
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: come in on at this angle. It's identical. It's like
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: fun because it's it's almost like you can figure it
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: out the same both ways, very similar. But what if
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: the dark talk winds up being reflecting your own thinking?
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: Then do then you change course because that's what everybody's
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: going to do and you better figure out something different.
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: You don't. You just try and block it out. That's
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: the bed you block other boats. Yeah, you try it
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: as much as you can. You know. We never an
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: example of some doc talk from this fall. We were
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: early September. We went out to four Pack for do
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: some walleye fishing, and uh check called the guy at
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: the marina and was like, Hey, what's the what's the
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: walleye report? The guys like walleye fishing has done for
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: the year. They all died. They went to Florida. Yeah,
- 2:04:24Speaker 1: it's like, well that's kind of weird. Dune for the year, Yes, Chester. Yeah.
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: So we get out there and we were watching all
- 2:04:32Speaker 1: the big walleye boats like make big runs to the west,
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: and the the one day we made it, we weren't
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: catching them. One day we're like, screw it. We'll just
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: we didn't want to run real far because you know,
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: like it gets expensive. We're not you know, tournament anglers
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: and making money and ship, so it's like we're you know,
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: paying for our gas and stuff. And one day we're
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: like screw it. So we just ran like thirteen miles
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: and caught like a couple of dinkers, but the big
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: bass or the big walleyboats are still like blowing past
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: us going away further. Well, the last day of the trip,
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: we um found an oil leak on Chet's motor, so
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: we're like, oh, ship, we can't like make a big
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: run because we don't want to blow the motor up.
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: We didn't really know what was going on. Um, so
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: we end up fishing in the bay where the marine
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: is and found the thirty interest and we're like catching
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: giant fish like within eyesight of where we put in
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: where the guy said the walleye fishing has done for
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: the year, and everyone else is running away from it.
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: There was no one else fishing there because they're fishing
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: last year. One of the toughest things the guys is
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: guides and locals on lakes that our tournaments come to.
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: They they either can blow it away, but it's usually
- 2:05:47Speaker 1: pretty tough on him because if you're a guide, you
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: just know too much. They have too many spots, too
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: much knowledge, and then they try and compact it into
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: an eight hour and it goes, you know when it
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: when it doesn't work out there like I can catch
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: him here here, next minute they're running around like crazy. Yeah,
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: and then and then you and then you can fish
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: too much and you fish those holes you've been a guide,
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: and then you know, the guy that just shows up
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: to a lake never been there before, just finds this
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: way different pattern than that guy that leaves leave there
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: his whole watch, like damn, I never even knew that
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: was there. That's got to be so illuminating. It's for
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: a recreational dude who fishes a lake to be able
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: to a tournament comes to the lake and be able
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: to see what do people do who are looking at this,
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: who are like sort of trained from a more national perspective,
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: like what do people do that are looking at this
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: without all the sort of like fishing my certain spots.
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: And here's what I know it works because this is
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: what my daddy did. Interesting to see, that's what they
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: say to us all the time every place that we
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: go to, like we get the big crowds and all
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: the people and they all say, we can, we are
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: you come into our lake. I can't wait to see
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: what you guys do and figure out that's why they're watching,
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: you know. And the biggest change of what Brandon was
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: saying before is live. That's been one of the biggest
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: changes in our whole sport is we have it's live. Now.
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: Every every bit of footage from when blast Off starts
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: to the end is live, either on the website or
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: on Fox Sports. And so in the past they had
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: to film it, edit all the footage and make this
- 2:07:24Speaker 1: little thirty minutes show and put it on one of
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: the channels. And now it's eight hours streamed live. You
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: see every cast of all the top five to ten anglers,
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: and like it's addicting, Like even for me. As soon
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: as you're cut from the tournament the next morning, you're
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: watching what that right, Yeah, you're like what I miss
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: and say all the locals and the people from all
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: over the world can watch it now and they're watching techniques,
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: but the locals love seeing like that was my spoty found,
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: or you know, seeing how different we approached the lake,
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: especially when we come to a new body of water
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: that they haven't seen as fish before. And that doesn't
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: turn into an issue when someone can watching and gost
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: just watch him from my boat problem, that's what That's
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: the only I don't get, Like when you were talking
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: about the term you did where you got your little
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: rhythm down, Okay, I can't remember what one, but you
- 2:08:13Speaker 1: just mentioned you sort of had a plan and it
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: was work and you're gonna keep doing it now. Why
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: isn't the guys that had like a shitty first day,
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: why don't they go and just be like, I'm just
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: gonna go exactly where he goes and and just a
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: mirror what he's doing. It happens they do. You can't.
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: There's not there's nothing to protect you from. There's unwritten rule.
- 2:08:35Speaker 1: It's changing now. So in the past you could go back,
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: say you had a bad day, you would go and
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: you would look get on the website. You'd look at
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: who was leading, and you could read like the article
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: of the pattern, and you could see a couple of
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: fishing clips. And now we can't get as soon as
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: the schedules out. We say a schedule comes out nine tournaments,
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: you can't talk to a single other human except for
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: who's in that tournament about any of those locations. And
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: then only you can fish it. You can't fish with
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: anyone on it. You can't talk to anyone about it.
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: There's no more scouts. You can only scout yourself, like
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: it's only what you policing that lie detect to test
- 2:09:14Speaker 1: truth detectiest and the polygraph. And then and then during
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: the tournament, you can't look at the website. You can't
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: look at social media, like because it's very easy, like
- 2:09:28Speaker 1: you could just in the past that would look, oh,
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: he's frog fishing in that mat. I'm going to I'll
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: try that tomorrow if you had a bad day, where
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: now when you don't catch him, you're like, I gotta
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: figure something. Jurors and like a high profile trial man
- 2:09:41Speaker 1: like they try to live. So then at the end
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: of the day, you can't talk to each other as
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: long as it's someone in the event, like you can't
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: call a guide or local shop or you know, you
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: can't go fishing with the organization, and they hire a
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: guy that would you come into a room? Yeah, specific
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: question up, Yeah, and it's you know that's every derby. Yeah,
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: give me an example, an example of a questions just like,
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: did you receive information on this tournament outside of off limits?
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: Or did you fish compete? Did you fish with an
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: angler on this body of water in off limits? Just
- 2:10:22Speaker 1: a few pretty pretty simple. But what they're trying to
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: do is like, and I like it. I want to
- 2:10:28Speaker 1: level the playing field like in the past, like when
- 2:10:30Speaker 1: I in two thousand fifteen, I fished the lake like
- 2:10:33Speaker 1: where Recklin had fished his whole life or whatever. But
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: I was on there. I never had a waypoint. Just
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: I'm just putting my boat on the water. And it's
- 2:10:40Speaker 1: how many thousand, hundreds of thousands naked, like and some
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: anglers have five thousand way points. Have talked to every
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: like the best guys, the guy that wins every local
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: weekend tournament, like they've just they don't even need to practice.
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: And here I am two and a half days on
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: this lake, like I got to try and figure out
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: how to catch a bass. That frustrated me because we
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: kept going back to the same bodies of water where
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: I'm like, I can never get that amount of knowledge
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: that that guy has in even if I live for
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: the next ten years on this lake, I wouldn't get
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: his amount of knowledge. So now they've cut it all
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: down to where trying to diversify the the schedule, which
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: is good new lakes that they haven't heard about, and
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: then um and then limiting all of that knowledge. So
- 2:11:25Speaker 1: it's up to you. It's up to you how if
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: you want to go and put time in that lake
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: and figure it out, and then what I wanted to
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: be is just two and a half days put on it.
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: Whoever configure it that lake out in two and a
- 2:11:36Speaker 1: half days, then the tournament starts. And to me, that's
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: the number one angler that can do that, not who
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: can get as much information and waypoints and spots from
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: someone else. That's how sort of And that's the way
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: I got two things. I got two questions and these
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: both like I got two things I want to do?
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: Did involve you guys? Time? Okay? Thing one I want
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: to a video. This will be a lot of fun.
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: We go to my mom's lake where I grew up,
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: sixty six acre lake. She still lives there. I was
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: born there. We go bass fish at lake? Yes or no?
- 2:12:16Speaker 1: Here's my question, make a show about it. Are we
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: allowed to do it out of our boats like with
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: our technology? Or do we have to do it out
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: of like doss boat? No? No, no, I don't want
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: that garbage. I want to go there. I want to
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: go there and like I want to see. I want
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: to be like catch a bunch of fish out of
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: this lake? Will I get a night crawl? Know what works? Well,
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: we're going. Here's what. Here's how we start. You get
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: a piece of plywood and you get a little rock
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: and then the brick. Okay, and you put the rock down.
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: Then you put the piece of plywood on the rock
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: and about four inches of watery so it's on an angle,
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: and then you put a brick on it so it
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: doesn't float away. The next day you lift apply with
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: up and catch a horn nose chub. You take that
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: horn nose job and hook him through the lips and
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: throw them out by my ma's raft on a bomber.
- 2:13:13Speaker 1: Say so I'll show you how I would go about it.
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: And then we'll um and then yeah, then I want
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: to you guys take all that fancy ship and catch
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: a bunch of bass. We would have a riot. It'll
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: be addicted to, like live technology. The next thing, the
- 2:13:27Speaker 1: next thing I want to do is this next time
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: we do a lot. We haven't done live shows in
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: a long time. Not live bait. There's live bait, and
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: there's live shows. We stopped doing live shows at COVID.
- 2:13:36Speaker 1: I haven't told you about this, but I'm flirting with
- 2:13:38Speaker 1: a live, very close by in state, live show at
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: a theater. I want to have where we come and
- 2:13:46Speaker 1: do a thing where I want to have people out
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: in the audience, have a big galvanized tub, okay, and
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: start in whatever row and someone holds the galvanized tub
- 2:14:00Speaker 1: and you gotta land and it will make a loud noise.
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: But we'll put a microphone up against the tub. I
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: like it. And then they're gonna pass it back a row,
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: spin and see how far these guys. Oh, okay, we'll
- 2:14:14Speaker 1: have these guys just far up the rows. Pretty soon
- 2:14:18Speaker 1: we're in row thirty. Yeah, spine or you hit some
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: guy a riot, you're gonna have to get a lot
- 2:14:26Speaker 1: of waivers. Signed for that one. Well, I was already.
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: I've been laying a bed at night thinking about this.
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: I think we find something that casts good. But it's soft. Yeah,
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: but it's gonna have to it's gonna have to have
- 2:14:38Speaker 1: a lot of salt, and so it's heavy. We'll figure
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: it out. Okay, it's a legitio. What's the word. It's
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: a litigious world out there. Many people are fixing to
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: sue everybody. Oh, litigious, that kind of world. You guys,
- 2:14:55Speaker 1: gotta keep your calendars open because I want to do
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: these My fish, my mom's lake. What's the best time
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: in here? The opening night start at midnight. It's one
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: of those songs that seasons. We started at midnight opening nights.
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: Sometime you can tell you a story that I believe
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: it's true. I believe this is true. My old man,
- 2:15:16Speaker 1: he always tells the story. There's a one. This story
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: has one lion. Uh. Nineteen, my mom and dad bought
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: the house I was born in. It was like seventy
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: one or seven seventy, nineteen seventy two. I know they
- 2:15:30Speaker 1: bought it for thirty five dollars. Did she actually have
- 2:15:32Speaker 1: you at home? Or you're just saying that you were
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: born to nearby hospital. No, I was born at the hospital.
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: My dad was born at home, not that home. My
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: dad always told everybody that he was birthweight was thirteen pounds,
- 2:15:42Speaker 1: but my mom pointed out that he was weighed on
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: like a kitchen scale. So no one knows what wighed
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: because they're never accurate. But now I was born at
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: the hospital, brought home upon my birth to this. A
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: lot of my stuff is still in my bedroom. No, uh,
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: here's the story. It's like it's an apocryphal story because
- 2:16:03Speaker 1: no one knows if it actually happened or not. My
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: old man says he came out to look at the
- 2:16:08Speaker 1: house considering buying the house. As he tells it, like
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: he looks at it, the realtor leaves and he's gonna
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: hang around a minute. He claims that the neighbor had
- 2:16:21Speaker 1: a rowboat out by the water's edge. My old man
- 2:16:27Speaker 1: claims that he got in that rowboat and rode over
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: in front of the what we call the orange brick
- 2:16:32Speaker 1: house and caught, as he caught, a five pound large mouth,
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: which would be the biggest large mouth to ever come
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: out of that lake in the history of mankind. Beat
- 2:16:49Speaker 1: five and he claims that that was why he bought
- 2:16:54Speaker 1: the house fishing tackle in the I believe every part
- 2:16:59Speaker 1: of it, except that I think he weighed the bass
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: on the same scale, which starts at like three pots.
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: So we need to figure out, like what that ratio
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: was that it was off. Yeah, we're like, it's probably
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: a three pound bass. He was probably a nine pound baby.
- 2:17:17Speaker 1: He's a good bass fishing like a bunch of two
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: three poundas. Yeah, that's cool, I mean good, like that
- 2:17:23Speaker 1: grass rock. What kind of visibility we talked? I imagine
- 2:17:28Speaker 1: a soup bowl. So it works like this. You have
- 2:17:33Speaker 1: reads along the shoreline, except for where people who are
- 2:17:36Speaker 1: like anti nature, uh poison all the weeds and then
- 2:17:40Speaker 1: they go buy sand and dump the sand on the
- 2:17:42Speaker 1: beach like pup. So you have that that or you
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: have the natural shoreline would be like woody debris and reads.
- 2:17:50Speaker 1: Then you have sand with a very thin layer of
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: like organic matter laying on it mark and that goes
- 2:17:59Speaker 1: out you four or five ft of water. Then you
- 2:18:03Speaker 1: have seaweed. We used to have milfoil, but they got
- 2:18:06Speaker 1: the mill foil under control. Now it's the native weed
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: and I can't remember the name of it that runs
- 2:18:11Speaker 1: out over the drop off. The drop off is where
- 2:18:14Speaker 1: it goes from like six ft pretty steep pitch down
- 2:18:17Speaker 1: to twelve and then then the drop off goes gradual
- 2:18:22Speaker 1: and the and it's anywhere in the middle from thirteen
- 2:18:25Speaker 1: to fourteen feet to get over to uh over by
- 2:18:28Speaker 1: buckskin bend or you might get or you might get
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: of water. What's the clarity? Like A can see it
- 2:18:36Speaker 1: pretty good at when I see, I'm gonna reveal some lawbreaking.
- 2:18:42Speaker 1: When I was ten, I took possession of a Hawaiian
- 2:18:45Speaker 1: of a three prong and early season was very good
- 2:18:49Speaker 1: for the three prong for blue gills. I was a
- 2:18:52Speaker 1: little kid. And then later in the summer you you
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: really couldn't see good enough to three prong. Okay, if
- 2:19:01Speaker 1: you're a lot of alps and you get stirred up
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: and it's natural lakes and here and you generally like
- 2:19:08Speaker 1: you generally do better. You see guys like you, guys
- 2:19:10Speaker 1: show up and you guys are all flicking off the docks,
- 2:19:13Speaker 1: which is cool, um, But the locals who really know
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: how to pound it, they're working the edge of the
- 2:19:19Speaker 1: weed bed. Yeah, it depends on the time of here.
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: But guys like you show up who watched too much
- 2:19:25Speaker 1: bass TV. They're flicking docks. It's not a big lake.
- 2:19:31Speaker 1: You can swim across the lake like and not. It's
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: not that big of a deal. It's not like, oh
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: my god, Bob swaying the lake. They'd be like, Bob
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: swam across lake. Can of squeeze in some filling questions
- 2:19:44Speaker 1: because I think we're running out of it. I got
- 2:19:47Speaker 1: I got out of this what I wanted. Oh, I
- 2:19:52Speaker 1: was just gonna say, um, Brandon and Carl, if you
- 2:19:55Speaker 1: guys have any fishing etiquette stuff that's like I need
- 2:20:00Speaker 1: to share that, send it to me or oh, Chester,
- 2:20:05Speaker 1: why don't we just make a can we make a
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: note that we need a thing called chettikott at the
- 2:20:09Speaker 1: mediator dot com and then people can just send check
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: it in. We got to talk to trust and Byron
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: dot com. I'd imagine you guys may have some some
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: like stuff that you don't need an email Chett. We
- 2:20:26Speaker 1: can just straight straight Chester. Wait, tell me real quick.
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: I know one of you guys just mentioned a second ago,
- 2:20:35Speaker 1: how many tournaments are any year, how many you have
- 2:20:38Speaker 1: to be in, and just kind of how that little
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: deal works in a tight little package hit him with it.
- 2:20:46Speaker 1: They like your accent way better. They were trying fish
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: as much as we can. It's like anything, you get better,
- 2:20:52Speaker 1: the more you fish, the more you can pay. You
- 2:20:54Speaker 1: just keep sort of getting on a role. But we
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: have nine a Late Series events, um so they had
- 2:20:58Speaker 1: a hundred percent ones we're in and and then they
- 2:21:01Speaker 1: there's nine open events and we tend to jump in
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: some of them, so how they fit in and usually
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: will do at least three to six of those, and
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: then there's like the US Open, and there's the bass
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: Master Classic, and then sometimes there's been the ao Y Championships.
- 2:21:16Speaker 1: So what what when you fish seven in a row,
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: you're looking at between between February and September. It's crammed
- 2:21:26Speaker 1: in and you put it roughly a week into each tournament,
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: three days of practice, four days of the event. If
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: you can do well, it's your fish a lot. Yeah,
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: you're just going, going, going. You're driving from Florida, then
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: the next events in Tennessee, next events in New York,
- 2:21:42Speaker 1: another one New York, Michigan, down to Texas when we've
- 2:21:46Speaker 1: gone out to California before. So you're almost a professional
- 2:21:49Speaker 1: truck driver by the end of the year you're putting
- 2:21:52Speaker 1: sometimes miles you can do up to that. You only
- 2:21:56Speaker 1: know how I'm done asking questions. I was done ask
- 2:22:00Speaker 1: since can you ask them? Are they able to get
- 2:22:03Speaker 1: that basketball over to my mouth's house? I'll answer for
- 2:22:08Speaker 1: they'll figure out a way. Um, can you guys quickly
- 2:22:11Speaker 1: just break down a four day tournament for our listeners?
- 2:22:14Speaker 1: Like day one? How many people? Because there's like cuts
- 2:22:17Speaker 1: and yep, for sure, great question. So we start with
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: roughly dred and because each year it will fluctuate a little,
- 2:22:27Speaker 1: but hunter guys and full field first two days and
- 2:22:33Speaker 1: it's accumulative weight, so five fish per day all live.
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: Day two, you know, five fish that total weight of
- 2:22:43Speaker 1: those ten fish. Then those top fifty guys or half
- 2:22:47Speaker 1: the field moves on to day three. Oh, some guys
- 2:22:51Speaker 1: get sent back no money, so it pays zero pretty
- 2:22:55Speaker 1: much essentially pays half the field. So you could have
- 2:22:58Speaker 1: paid five grand and then you get nothing back if
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: you didn't perform. Yeah, yeah, and what you invested, well,
- 2:23:03Speaker 1: that's when you're talking about. That's when you go home
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: and start watching TV. Next two days you're watching what
- 2:23:09Speaker 1: you missed in Toronto. So say top fifty Day three,
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: five more fish three day total, top ten guys move
- 2:23:18Speaker 1: on to Day four and then top four on Sunday,
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: So be Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So that water has
- 2:23:26Speaker 1: gone from a hundred dudes flailing the way at it
- 2:23:29Speaker 1: to four dudes flailing at ten is the lowest that
- 2:23:34Speaker 1: comes very like bad hosting today. Man, And how does
- 2:23:38Speaker 1: how does the point system work? Because there's isn't there,
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: Like you get so many points, yeah, hundred for first,
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: and then it just goes down one point from there
- 2:23:47Speaker 1: and then those points go towards Angler of the year exactly.
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: So each tournament you accumulate those points, you know, similar
- 2:23:54Speaker 1: to like NASCAR points race or something like, So Angler
- 2:23:57Speaker 1: the years just points based over the course of those
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: nine regular season events. So it's not something like people's
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: choice or like you know, like the hysman, there's like
- 2:24:08Speaker 1: some level of like when you get on that, there's
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: some level of subjectivity right from now, it's a it's
- 2:24:12Speaker 1: an earned like competitive like the worst guy on the
- 2:24:15Speaker 1: planet could win it, not the worst fisherman, like the
- 2:24:19Speaker 1: worst individual, worst human being, like a horrible human being
- 2:24:24Speaker 1: theoretically be anger the person you won't drink a beer with,
- 2:24:27Speaker 1: but he's really good at catching back. Among the anglers,
- 2:24:31Speaker 1: it's like Angle of the Year is like is definitely
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: the most hard fought and title le guys, and that's
- 2:24:36Speaker 1: what Brandon won in two thousand seventeen, and so that
- 2:24:39Speaker 1: you're basically the number one bass angler in the world
- 2:24:42Speaker 1: at that stage and that gets you everything. But the
- 2:24:44Speaker 1: bass Master Classic is the sort of the pinnacle of
- 2:24:47Speaker 1: the sport as far as it's from a spectator. From
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: a spectators point and where the stadiums are full the crowd,
- 2:24:54Speaker 1: that's where sort of the dream and the thing comes
- 2:24:57Speaker 1: from kids seeing that because the guys are driving in
- 2:25:00Speaker 1: their trucks and boats that the crowds are just massive
- 2:25:03Speaker 1: and like this year alone, what are they doing? So yeah,
- 2:25:07Speaker 1: watching the way and but there's a big trade show
- 2:25:10Speaker 1: before it. So this year a hundred and almost a
- 2:25:12Speaker 1: hundred and fifty thousand people walk through the doors over
- 2:25:16Speaker 1: three days, and so it was that's a lot of people.
- 2:25:19Speaker 1: It's like big tackle show, hundred people. And then the
- 2:25:22Speaker 1: stands are like packed and they watching the guys come
- 2:25:26Speaker 1: in way in their fish and then you know the
- 2:25:28Speaker 1: winner at the ends, winning three D five hundred thousand dollars,
- 2:25:31Speaker 1: but you know that it's it's pretty cool looking from back,
- 2:25:35Speaker 1: you know. That's that's what gave me the dream of
- 2:25:36Speaker 1: seeing America and seeing how you can you can basically
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: make a living out of bass fishing over here. That's
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: what every does. That's interesting. You know my brother in
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: laws from I think he's from Queensland to and uh.
- 2:25:49Speaker 1: And when when you guys go to school over there,
- 2:25:52Speaker 1: they must teach you when they spell out America, it
- 2:25:56Speaker 1: ends in C A R America like yeah, the en
- 2:26:01Speaker 1: you guys say it. Yeah, there's a there's a few
- 2:26:05Speaker 1: things that we do. I forget what it is, but
- 2:26:07Speaker 1: there's a rule why we do that. Like if there's
- 2:26:09Speaker 1: a vow pass something. My wife's names Kayla, but if
- 2:26:13Speaker 1: I say it in a sentence, I say Kaylor, and
- 2:26:15Speaker 1: then if I say it another way, I say Kayla.
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: And so it's but someone her dad actually figured out
- 2:26:21Speaker 1: why we put ours at the end. There's a certain
- 2:26:24Speaker 1: way we'll do this. Interesting because my sister's name is
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: Mata and when he Joel says it, it's yeah, yeah,
- 2:26:31Speaker 1: Like no, man, it's there. There's no R on the end.
- 2:26:35Speaker 1: You're married, you got kids, No, we've got one on
- 2:26:37Speaker 1: the way. You're married. I was even married since June.
- 2:26:41Speaker 1: To get married in June. It's great. We're together nearly
- 2:26:44Speaker 1: ten years. So nothing really changed. Yeah, alright, I got sidetracked.
- 2:26:49Speaker 1: There's five fish day one approximately. Everybody wants to know
- 2:26:56Speaker 1: how what's the release process? Like, because they got caught
- 2:26:59Speaker 1: from two miles away? Well, okay, that's so, what's crazy
- 2:27:04Speaker 1: that you bring them back home? Well, there's a bunch
- 2:27:06Speaker 1: of studies on that. Uh, A lot of the fish
- 2:27:09Speaker 1: will travel back. I have no idea how they do it,
- 2:27:13Speaker 1: but they will travel. Especially I think of like an
- 2:27:18Speaker 1: ELK migration route, right, Like they travel as migration route
- 2:27:22Speaker 1: you haul a boat, I know, but somehow they figure
- 2:27:25Speaker 1: out how to go back. It's like some of those
- 2:27:30Speaker 1: mountain goats get trapped and transferred and then they make
- 2:27:34Speaker 1: it hundreds of But the areas do you get stocked,
- 2:27:37Speaker 1: like where the tournaments get run from a really good
- 2:27:41Speaker 1: fishing areas for lots of people, Especially when tournaments get
- 2:27:44Speaker 1: run year after year after year, there's a lot of
- 2:27:46Speaker 1: fish getting put in that area. One day there's break
- 2:27:52Speaker 1: down across I'll break it down, like, so we have
- 2:27:55Speaker 1: live wells that are fully oxygenated, cooled everything like in
- 2:27:59Speaker 1: our boats. So you put the fish in keep them alive.
- 2:28:02Speaker 1: We have additives and everything that like you know, will
- 2:28:05Speaker 1: kill different bacterias and viruses that they have and keep
- 2:28:08Speaker 1: them healthy. Then we bring him to the way in.
- 2:28:11Speaker 1: They go from our boat into these big tanks that
- 2:28:15Speaker 1: are then temperature cooled and oxygenized, and we wait backstage
- 2:28:20Speaker 1: with our fish in those go to the stage, weigh
- 2:28:23Speaker 1: them in, and then they go to a live release boats.
- 2:28:25Speaker 1: So they have a giant pontoon boat that's built that
- 2:28:28Speaker 1: they hauled every tournament that has these giant tanks that
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: are big giant live wells that then they put all
- 2:28:34Speaker 1: the bouts in. They launched the boat, and then they
- 2:28:36Speaker 1: go and disperse the fish out in the lake or
- 2:28:38Speaker 1: the river. He eventually gets back. People like where you
- 2:28:44Speaker 1: were You've been, Jimmy, I have been on a trip.
- 2:28:48Speaker 1: He's like, there must have been people in the stage.
- 2:28:52Speaker 1: Famous I saw the after the Classic this year was Survival, Yeah,
- 2:28:59Speaker 1: and that was and so yeah, a lot of times
- 2:29:02Speaker 1: we have a p that was four in Texas in
- 2:29:08Speaker 1: June when it's you know, hundreds of degrees going back
- 2:29:13Speaker 1: into the water and who knows what happens to the
- 2:29:16Speaker 1: next day. Yeah, that's still bad. If you did that
- 2:29:20Speaker 1: with trout, it wouldn't be like that. No way. That's
- 2:29:24Speaker 1: why they're cool because they're hardy. They're like they're built
- 2:29:27Speaker 1: for like that condent they can they can which is weird,
- 2:29:32Speaker 1: like the way they can be held, the way they
- 2:29:34Speaker 1: can handle the stress and all of that. But it's um,
- 2:29:37Speaker 1: you know, I always try and think of like the
- 2:29:41Speaker 1: I've always want to ask you, like what you think
- 2:29:43Speaker 1: about tournament fish and like catching relate, like even just
- 2:29:45Speaker 1: catching release because I got zero, Like there's what there's
- 2:29:49Speaker 1: what I like. Yeah, there's like what I personally like
- 2:29:52Speaker 1: to do. There's what other people do. Yeah, and that's
- 2:29:55Speaker 1: one of those areas where I could care less other
- 2:29:57Speaker 1: people do. Yeah, sorry I could not here. Let's what
- 2:30:00Speaker 1: other people do. Yeah. Um, when it comes to like
- 2:30:02Speaker 1: letting fish call, that's great just for me personally. Yeah,
- 2:30:05Speaker 1: I like eating fish. Yeah, but what about like do
- 2:30:08Speaker 1: ever is there a spacies or anything that you like
- 2:30:10Speaker 1: to target to catch and then it's like prestigious tight
- 2:30:13Speaker 1: fish that you would let go all catch one enough
- 2:30:16Speaker 1: to eat and then continue to fish and catch them
- 2:30:19Speaker 1: and let the rest go or would you be done
- 2:30:20Speaker 1: and leave? We have a small property where we camp,
- 2:30:25Speaker 1: so we just we recently got it and it's just
- 2:30:27Speaker 1: like a very small little parcel. But with my family
- 2:30:29Speaker 1: was it's easy for us to take our kids there
- 2:30:31Speaker 1: for the weekend camping. Yeah, it happens to be in uh,
- 2:30:35Speaker 1: like it's native cutthroat trout stream. No retention of cutthroat trout. Yeah. Uh,
- 2:30:41Speaker 1: my kid, you're not legally not allowed to look that
- 2:30:44Speaker 1: protected then that streaming not you can't kill your cuts.
- 2:30:48Speaker 1: My kid like he don't have anything go. Yeah, but
- 2:30:55Speaker 1: he developed, like when you get that from. Over the
- 2:30:59Speaker 1: course of summer, it was fun. We like would catch
- 2:31:01Speaker 1: fish and we had a thing where they caught the
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: same fish who lives behind a beaver pond so much
- 2:31:08Speaker 1: that I had to say no more catching that fish
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: this summer. It was a very distinct. They caught that
- 2:31:14Speaker 1: fish all the time. If they weren't catching it, they'd
- 2:31:16Speaker 1: be over there feeding at grasshoppers. Yeah, like throwing it
- 2:31:20Speaker 1: in it flows down to eat it. And I antually
- 2:31:21Speaker 1: said stock catching that fish, Like, go catch a different fish. Um.
- 2:31:25Speaker 1: It was kind of like it was fun to watch,
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: like they very quickly got used to it, and they
- 2:31:29Speaker 1: love to go catch the fish and like pinched barbs,
- 2:31:32Speaker 1: dry flies only you know. Um no, like I would
- 2:31:35Speaker 1: wake up very excited to go like explore around catching cuts.
- 2:31:38Speaker 1: Let him go, Jeffy doesn't bother me. But um, when
- 2:31:42Speaker 1: we sit down and eat dinner at night, Uh, I
- 2:31:46Speaker 1: like to eat stuff we caught. I'm not gonna go
- 2:31:48Speaker 1: catch things. Let them go, then go buy some ships
- 2:31:50Speaker 1: someone else caught. Yeah. It just seems like goofy to me. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:31:54Speaker 1: I mean, and I know a lot of guys that
- 2:31:55Speaker 1: won't kill a fish. But when I've been to a
- 2:31:57Speaker 1: restaurant with them and the sons of bitches order fish, yeah,
- 2:32:00Speaker 1: I'm like what what like, why is that fish gotta die?
- 2:32:04Speaker 1: But not your fish? Yeah? What's like, what's so unspecial
- 2:32:08Speaker 1: about that fish? Yeah? I mean, but like, but like
- 2:32:11Speaker 1: if the whole world stopped catching and keeping fish and
- 2:32:16Speaker 1: they didn't like change my rules around, I would view
- 2:32:19Speaker 1: it as a positive because I have more fish catch
- 2:32:22Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, no condemnation, it's it's it's just way
- 2:32:28Speaker 1: lucky to leave. I guess in a country, a couple
- 2:32:30Speaker 1: of countries, way you can catch fish and then just
- 2:32:32Speaker 1: let them go and freedom to let them go. Just
- 2:32:34Speaker 1: like I got a real quick question. Um, there's a
- 2:32:39Speaker 1: kid in this like four thousand person arena watch and
- 2:32:43Speaker 1: you like hold up these bass and they see like
- 2:32:46Speaker 1: all the trucks and all the boats and all the money,
- 2:32:48Speaker 1: and they go, well, shoot, that's what I want to do.
- 2:32:51Speaker 1: I want to I want to be that guy. If
- 2:32:54Speaker 1: you were to give that kid some very realistic advice about, uh,
- 2:33:02Speaker 1: how you might think that he might go about it,
- 2:33:05Speaker 1: and explain to him in no one certain terms the
- 2:33:07Speaker 1: reality of what might happen should he pursue that. What
- 2:33:10Speaker 1: would you tell that kid? Your entire life, in the
- 2:33:14Speaker 1: direction it goes, is made up of small decisions that
- 2:33:20Speaker 1: you make daily. Right, every single day, we have to
- 2:33:23Speaker 1: make decisions what time you're gonna wake up, what you're
- 2:33:27Speaker 1: gonna order make for breakfast, Like your entire life is
- 2:33:30Speaker 1: made up of decisions. Those decisions that you make will
- 2:33:34Speaker 1: determine how successful you are and where you go. So
- 2:33:37Speaker 1: if there's a little kid and he decides that that's
- 2:33:40Speaker 1: what you want to do, those decisions that you make
- 2:33:43Speaker 1: from that point moving forward will be the difference maker
- 2:33:47Speaker 1: in whether or not you achieve that dream. Um, because
- 2:33:50Speaker 1: it will never be handed to you. And so you
- 2:33:52Speaker 1: have to be willing to sacrifice going out on a
- 2:33:55Speaker 1: Friday night with your buddies because you have a tournament
- 2:33:58Speaker 1: on Saturday. You know. The those are those little things
- 2:34:02Speaker 1: add up over time, right, like not giving into that
- 2:34:04Speaker 1: peer pressure of things, of keeping that focus on that
- 2:34:08Speaker 1: goal no matter how long term it is. But you
- 2:34:12Speaker 1: achieve those by the small daily decisions and habits that
- 2:34:16Speaker 1: you do. Be like I'm gonna be a I'm gonna
- 2:34:21Speaker 1: work for the CIA, and tonight I'm gonna drink and drive. Nope,
- 2:34:27Speaker 1: not the name, but that's that's what you have to do. Um,
- 2:34:31Speaker 1: would you be like encouraging of pursuing like that kind
- 2:34:34Speaker 1: of lifestyle. So, the way I explain it, um catching
- 2:34:40Speaker 1: a couple of Uh, The way I explained it is
- 2:34:54Speaker 1: that you have to physically and mentally not be able
- 2:34:59Speaker 1: to live without it because it is a losing battle. Um.
- 2:35:04Speaker 1: So even Kevin van dam Kalamazoom Michigan, the winningest angler
- 2:35:10Speaker 1: ever to fish, has lost more than he's ever won
- 2:35:15Speaker 1: in events. And so if you just love to do
- 2:35:18Speaker 1: something and you get kicked in the teeth that much,
- 2:35:22Speaker 1: you'll learn not to love it, and so you physically
- 2:35:25Speaker 1: and mentally have to not be able to live without it.
- 2:35:28Speaker 1: Two go at it at that level, right, there's a
- 2:35:31Speaker 1: difference between doing it recreationally fishing local tournaments and doing
- 2:35:36Speaker 1: it at the highest level. Yeah, you have to literally
- 2:35:40Speaker 1: can't live without it. Otherwise the brick walls and setbacks
- 2:35:43Speaker 1: will just be too much. You'll just you'll once it
- 2:35:46Speaker 1: gets too hard, you'll stop and turn around. So that's
- 2:35:49Speaker 1: been that's been the only raising all of our us
- 2:35:51Speaker 1: two a seat and years. We just went through the
- 2:35:53Speaker 1: storm a little bit further than what the rest were
- 2:35:56Speaker 1: willing to do kind of thing. But it's a balance.
- 2:35:59Speaker 1: It's a little bit like a fighters kid though, Like
- 2:36:01Speaker 1: you know, a fighter like fights and then he kind
- 2:36:04Speaker 1: of doesn't want his kid to do it because he
- 2:36:06Speaker 1: knows what it took to get through that. But I
- 2:36:10Speaker 1: kind of that That's where the most difficult thing is
- 2:36:12Speaker 1: is like you want to tell the realities, like what
- 2:36:15Speaker 1: you said of what potentially could happen, but you don't
- 2:36:17Speaker 1: want to deter a kid. And like, but also most
- 2:36:20Speaker 1: of us got told that would be nothing. You know,
- 2:36:22Speaker 1: I got told that I was going to be a
- 2:36:23Speaker 1: stop going man. If I kept fishing, and my teachers
- 2:36:26Speaker 1: and people around you and like hundreds and hundreds of
- 2:36:30Speaker 1: people your whole life, and that was my fuel, so
- 2:36:34Speaker 1: kind of you know, if they didn't tell me that,
- 2:36:36Speaker 1: and they kept telling me I can just go fishing,
- 2:36:38Speaker 1: maybe I would have just sort of got a bit
- 2:36:40Speaker 1: soft on it. But because they were so hard on it,
- 2:36:42Speaker 1: I was like, if I fail, they win, So I've
- 2:36:45Speaker 1: got to go through this. Yeah, You've got to be
- 2:36:47Speaker 1: like the intersection of like passion and compulsion would be hard.
- 2:36:50Speaker 1: Like I don't know how to tell a kid like
- 2:36:53Speaker 1: not to pursure it. You want to tell them like
- 2:36:55Speaker 1: this is It's the greatest sport in the world. I
- 2:36:57Speaker 1: love it. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's
- 2:36:58Speaker 1: given us so many opportunities as we're sitting here with
- 2:37:01Speaker 1: traveling the country, with fishing, fishing, and just it's the
- 2:37:08Speaker 1: most unbelievable thing. But it's also the most difficult thing
- 2:37:10Speaker 1: I've ever done in my life and the most upsetting
- 2:37:12Speaker 1: and gut wrenching and sacrifice not seeing family and like
- 2:37:16Speaker 1: that disappointment of like you know, I went, I went,
- 2:37:19Speaker 1: you know, eight years here of not even coming close
- 2:37:23Speaker 1: to anything, like just crawled up in a ball, like crying,
- 2:37:26Speaker 1: like you're gonna lose everything. Like that's how bad it gets.
- 2:37:30Speaker 1: And I've just gotten through that and out the other
- 2:37:33Speaker 1: side of it. In two thousand nineteen, I won my
- 2:37:36Speaker 1: first Elite Series event. My whole life turned around. It
- 2:37:38Speaker 1: was a slight, man. I was about to give up.
- 2:37:41Speaker 1: It's good. Yeah, So that's the one piece of career
- 2:37:47Speaker 1: advice I've worked up. Is remarkably similar to Brandon's career advice,
- 2:37:50Speaker 1: where and I didn't follow my own career advice, but um,
- 2:37:55Speaker 1: I would see people when I was in school, studying
- 2:37:58Speaker 1: year writer. I would see people that had Plan B.
- 2:38:02Speaker 1: It's funny, you know, and the plan B was like
- 2:38:05Speaker 1: inevitably and like invariably. The plan B was like seductive
- 2:38:09Speaker 1: because it was so easy. Yeah, and really talented people, man,
- 2:38:14Speaker 1: but they'd come out of the program and it's like
- 2:38:18Speaker 1: that that B was so fre contempting and they would
- 2:38:21Speaker 1: just do the B. Yeah, I got funny. I could
- 2:38:24Speaker 1: like spend years not making any money and like living
- 2:38:27Speaker 1: to my brother's basement, or I could just go to
- 2:38:29Speaker 1: work for my family's card dealership, you know, and I
- 2:38:32Speaker 1: wanted it was just too seductive. Yeah, my mom wanted
- 2:38:35Speaker 1: me to go to college because she said, you know,
- 2:38:38Speaker 1: you should probably have a plan B. And I looked
- 2:38:41Speaker 1: at it, and I said, why do I need a
- 2:38:43Speaker 1: plan B if I don't plan on failing at plan A?
- 2:38:47Speaker 1: You know? And I mean but that, like I had
- 2:38:49Speaker 1: that mentality eight. But that's what you have to have,
- 2:38:52Speaker 1: and it doesn't have to be fishing right, be anything.
- 2:38:57Speaker 1: I think our whole country would have been a better
- 2:38:59Speaker 1: place if more people pursued what they were passionate about
- 2:39:02Speaker 1: and didn't just go work a job to get a paycheck.
- 2:39:06Speaker 1: I'm never gonna be happy that way I had until
- 2:39:08Speaker 1: I was twenty two. I was like going to be
- 2:39:10Speaker 1: a professional fur trapper. Failing that, I would be a writer.
- 2:39:15Speaker 1: And then I switched to like a plan writer, no
- 2:39:19Speaker 1: by plan, and then like morphed them together, did both
- 2:39:25Speaker 1: of them like plan C was like I'll win at both.
- 2:39:28Speaker 1: Another thing that helps is UM, you mentioned your mom
- 2:39:31Speaker 1: thought you should go to college. But I always had
- 2:39:33Speaker 1: the luxury where you didn't have wan didn't make any money.
- 2:39:37Speaker 1: Um for years, I had the luxury where I was
- 2:39:40Speaker 1: like very celebrated in my family by my mom and dad.
- 2:39:44Speaker 1: I thought it was just phenomenal. Yeah, there's never any
- 2:39:47Speaker 1: of that, like you should get a real but I
- 2:39:49Speaker 1: thought was cool as ship, you know what I mean. Yeah,
- 2:39:52Speaker 1: my parents are super supported, Like I wanted you to
- 2:39:54Speaker 1: be a lawyer. Yeah, I never had to deal any
- 2:39:56Speaker 1: of that. Yeah. The only reason I'm able to do
- 2:39:58Speaker 1: what I do is because my mom taught he's super on,
- 2:40:03Speaker 1: like super early on, to chase what whatever you're passionate about,
- 2:40:07Speaker 1: right like it was. It was never like you need
- 2:40:09Speaker 1: to have a real job. She just I think understood,
- 2:40:14Speaker 1: and I don't falter for it. But like being a parent,
- 2:40:17Speaker 1: say you live in North Idaho and you want to
- 2:40:19Speaker 1: be a professional baptisher man, she understood the realities. I
- 2:40:24Speaker 1: was living in fantasy Like I didn't understand that, So
- 2:40:27Speaker 1: I don't falter for it at all. Like do you
- 2:40:29Speaker 1: see an eye hopper? I mean I get it, I
- 2:40:34Speaker 1: get it. I got a good way to get out
- 2:40:37Speaker 1: of here. Last, but not least, with all of this
- 2:40:42Speaker 1: on the line, are you guys clinch or improved clinch? Guys, Yeah,
- 2:40:47Speaker 1: clinch or improved clinch or either. I know the answers neither.
- 2:40:51Speaker 1: There's no way you guys can finish those two, not yeah,
- 2:40:56Speaker 1: tye polymer like a time on every anything except for
- 2:41:01Speaker 1: one technique punching San Diego jams but not the Yeah,
- 2:41:08Speaker 1: I looked that one up, sang jam. Not. I think
- 2:41:10Speaker 1: that's the strongest, not that you can San Diego, San
- 2:41:13Speaker 1: Diego jam. Yeah. Sometimes that sounds like a sture, just
- 2:41:18Speaker 1: getting ripped on that chester. What do you think about that,
- 2:41:23Speaker 1: San Diego jam Um, I think that's great. What you
- 2:41:29Speaker 1: want to do, I tie um just to improved clinch.
- 2:41:35Speaker 1: But I was just fly fishing and that's just kind
- 2:41:37Speaker 1: of what I did. But I'm a UNI man myself.
- 2:41:39Speaker 1: Was it you guys like the Union? Not I used
- 2:41:41Speaker 1: to Yeah, you know, to Flora, But what do you
- 2:41:45Speaker 1: do for Brad to Flora? Now I had crazy, Alberto,
- 2:41:48Speaker 1: because I've only got ten fingers and tent toes. Carl
- 2:41:53Speaker 1: ties f g not hold tell me that, not for
- 2:41:57Speaker 1: UNI to Brad, for Brady to Uni. That you look,
- 2:41:59Speaker 1: I'm sorry for read the floor, Alberta. There's a bunch
- 2:42:02Speaker 1: of like easy ones, but like it's the hardest not
- 2:42:05Speaker 1: to tie because braid cuts into your leader fluoro carbon
- 2:42:08Speaker 1: any other way that you do it. When you put
- 2:42:09Speaker 1: braid across a fluoro carbon. It's going to weaken the
- 2:42:13Speaker 1: fluora carbon and break no matter which way you do it,
- 2:42:15Speaker 1: and so years ago. The reason a lot of my
- 2:42:18Speaker 1: success is because of that, not because the night tirees.
- 2:42:21Speaker 1: F G knot. It doesn't break in years past when
- 2:42:24Speaker 1: you need a UNI. It broke all the time on
- 2:42:26Speaker 1: a hook set, especially when bite, hook, bang and break.
- 2:42:30Speaker 1: That's the weak spot. F G knot is a hundred percent.
- 2:42:33Speaker 1: So it's like the only knot braid leader that's our
- 2:42:35Speaker 1: actually but comes from seawater. Yeah, it's it's the slim Beauty. Yeah,
- 2:42:41Speaker 1: Slim Beauty was always a good one that I used
- 2:42:43Speaker 1: to tie until the f G. But the FSA it
- 2:42:46Speaker 1: like plats the braid and the fluora carbon together and
- 2:42:49Speaker 1: there's no knot in it. So the fluora carbon is
- 2:42:51Speaker 1: dead straight and the braids platted over the top of
- 2:42:54Speaker 1: it and then grips into it, goes through the guy's real. Yeah,
- 2:42:58Speaker 1: and then it's been so you can have like a
- 2:43:00Speaker 1: twenty ft later in cost and they'll just get three.
- 2:43:03Speaker 1: I'm learning that right there. If we gotta get it's
- 2:43:12Speaker 1: a not a great launch on my mom's like if
- 2:43:15Speaker 1: it comes out, if it comes down to it and
- 2:43:17Speaker 1: we gotta get your boat on a couple of slings
- 2:43:19Speaker 1: and drive it down and drop it in with a
- 2:43:21Speaker 1: piece of heavy equipment. You don't care, right, I mean,
- 2:43:24Speaker 1: I'm willing to get in the water if if it's
- 2:43:28Speaker 1: a normal like if there's any kind of we can depth,
- 2:43:31Speaker 1: we can put it in with the trucks, like we
- 2:43:33Speaker 1: can put it into some rough spots. It just depends
- 2:43:36Speaker 1: how mighty it is, like if we'll get bugged. But
- 2:43:40Speaker 1: here's my last question. Me and Johanni are going, uh,
- 2:43:42Speaker 1: which we're gonna become. We're gonna try to become World
- 2:43:45Speaker 1: Slam uh turkey holders. Yeah, well that's not true because
- 2:43:49Speaker 1: I've got a long ways to go after I get
- 2:43:51Speaker 1: that bird. You. Yeah, I thought you were there. No,
- 2:43:55Speaker 1: I haven't killed the Goulds or I was gonna say,
- 2:43:57Speaker 1: do you think me and should get matching World Slam
- 2:43:59Speaker 1: turkey holder tattoos? But we'll ask you that the dude,
- 2:44:04Speaker 1: I'm doing it. Man. I told my wife you don't
- 2:44:06Speaker 1: like it one bit, But all right, thanks guys, this
- 2:44:09Speaker 1: great man. I can't wait to go fishing and then
- 2:44:10Speaker 1: do our thing with the buckets. We appreciate Bani. How
- 2:44:14Speaker 1: do we find you guys online. Um, just social handles
- 2:44:19Speaker 1: is Carl Jocolinson, Instagram, Facebook, website, YouTube, same name, man,
- 2:44:25Speaker 1: you make it easy. My website and my YouTube are
- 2:44:30Speaker 1: bm P fishing and then all my social handles are Brandon,
- 2:44:35Speaker 1: Paul Nick that's p A l A and I UK Parliament. Yeah,
- 2:44:40Speaker 1: it's really confusing. Definitely check them out in great episode.
- 2:44:43Speaker 1: Great for me. It's good stuff on. You're not gonna
- 2:44:48Speaker 1: like it when you see at a time, but once
- 2:44:50Speaker 1: you get the hang of it, you'll just so. Yeah,
- 2:44:51Speaker 1: but I like tanying goofy nuts. Yeah, you'll like it
- 2:44:54Speaker 1: just for its own sick and your fingers. It's the
- 2:44:56Speaker 1: way you hold it. You've got to have like the
- 2:44:58Speaker 1: braid tight and then you gotta but once you get
- 2:45:00Speaker 1: and I had just watch it on YouTube a couple
- 2:45:02Speaker 1: of times. Dial, I'm gonna learn that South, I'm gonna
- 2:45:08Speaker 1: beat your net wall I turned out alrighty buddy, let's
- 2:45:10Speaker 1: do it alright, guys. Thanks man, it's great you guys
- 2:45:12Speaker 1: shoul come back on again. Thanks for having us. Thanks guys.
- 2:45:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna go eat some cheese kurds.
