- 0:30Amen. Amen.
- 0:31Open your Bibles. First John chapter 2 as we start
- 0:35a new chapter today. First John chapter 2.
- 0:38I've entitled our Bible study. Jesus your advocate.
- 0:43Jesus, your advocate. We know that there are great
- 0:46benefits in having a personal relationship with Jesus.
- 0:51We know this, but it is good to be reminded salvation is so much
- 0:56more than just fire insurance. And what I mean by that?
- 1:01Salvation is so much more than you just avoiding eternity apart
- 1:05from God in a place we commonly refer to as Hell or Gehenna.
- 1:10It's far more than that. Jesus brings into our lives
- 1:13fullness and wholeness every single day.
- 1:18Do you remember how Peter referred to it in Second Peter
- 1:21chapter 1? It's said that through the
- 1:23knowledge of Jesus Christ, we have been given all things
- 1:29pertaining to life and godliness.
- 1:31We've been given all things pertaining to life and
- 1:34godliness. John the beloved here.
- 1:37John the elder, 100 years old. He's encouraging the believers
- 1:44who allowed the excitement of Jesus to wear off.
- 1:47If this hasn't happened to you yet, certainly it's up ahead
- 1:52where you're so excited about what God is doing.
- 1:55A new believer excitement, a new phase, a new season excitement.
- 1:59But over time, if we don't guard that like a fire, it'll just go
- 2:03out. We're not fanning the flames.
- 2:06It will allow the excitement of Jesus to wear off.
- 2:09Those that John is writing to were like second and third
- 2:13generation believers. The Christian life have become
- 2:17routine and ritualistic and even developing A rut.
- 2:23They were vulnerable. Now when you're comfortable,
- 2:27when you're complacent, can I add this word as well, just so
- 2:30you won't watch out for it. When you're lazy spiritually,
- 2:34you become very vulnerable. Vulnerable to the enemy's
- 2:38attacks, vulnerable to false teachers, vulnerable to wolves
- 2:44in sheep's clothing. And they were vulnerable to all
- 2:46sorts of false teaching. And that's what complacency will
- 2:50do. It can make you open to the
- 2:52weirdest of stuff. Let me give you a modern day
- 2:55example. You are tired and had a long
- 2:58day, had a long week. And your, your, your decision is
- 3:02just, I'm going to go on, I'm going to go on social media and
- 3:05I'm just going to check things out.
- 3:07And before you know it, you're done after five hours, Five
- 3:13hours ago, that didn't happen. Check your time, go ahead on the
- 3:17app, it'll keep track of you. Unless you turned it off, it'll
- 3:19keep track. You can't keep track because the
- 3:22way it's designed is to take advantage of your curiosity and
- 3:26to take advantage of what you're looking at.
- 3:28And you know you're into this. And so give you 10 more things
- 3:31into this and before you know it, you are down what they call
- 3:34the rabbit hole. And if it's not TikTok and if
- 3:38it's not Instagram, certainly YouTube has perfected this
- 3:43because if they can get you hooked on one video, 10 minutes,
- 3:46the next one's 15 minutes, the next one's 30 minutes.
- 3:49And then all this guy has a series and this, and then they
- 3:52have a friend that they recommended and you can link
- 3:54this and subscribe that. And how did it all begin?
- 3:58You just let your guard down. It didn't even start out that
- 4:00way. You weren't planning five hours
- 4:02and going to bed at 2:00 in the morning.
- 4:05But that's what happened. Laziness, spiritually, not
- 4:09having your guard up for the new believers, they were all sorts
- 4:13or these believers that John is writing to.
- 4:15There were all sorts of temptations.
- 4:17They didn't have social media, but certainly the 1st century
- 4:20equivalent. And John, what he does is he
- 4:23takes them back to the basics. And we saw in chapter one that
- 4:28this issue of sin is no joke. It's no joke.
- 4:33It will wipe you out. It will destroy and damage you
- 4:38and me. But this importance of
- 4:41fellowship, that which we have seen, remember in verse three
- 4:46that which we have seen and heard, we tell you, we declare
- 4:49to you so that what you'll have Koinonia, you'll have fellowship
- 4:53with us, and our Koinonia is with the Father and with his Son
- 4:58Jesus Christ. So I winding you these things to
- 5:00you, verse 4 so that your joy may be full.
- 5:03Verse 7 if we walk in the light, he's in the light just like he
- 5:08is. We have coined and kneel with
- 5:10one another and what happens the blood of Jesus Christ his Son
- 5:14cleanses us from all sin. First John 19 if we confess our
- 5:19sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us
- 5:24from all unrighteousness. Verse 10, if we say that we've
- 5:29not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in US.
- 5:33My little children, these things I write to you that you may not
- 5:38sin. And if anyone sins, we have an
- 5:42advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
- 5:47He starts out with this tenderness, the Greek word der
- 5:50tecnia. It's like a small child and he's
- 5:53writing to full grown adults of course, but he sees them as his
- 5:57kid. This is John's tender care for
- 6:01his flock, and even though John is very old here, 100 years old,
- 6:06he didn't become an angry, impatient man with the flock of
- 6:11God as he steps into the messiness of their sin.
- 6:16I sent a copy of this little paragraph from my notes to a
- 6:21very beloved We won't use the word, but I guess we will.
- 6:24Older pastor here by the name of Bob.
- 6:31He's unable to be with us tonight because he's got some
- 6:33ministry coming up. So I sent it to him because I
- 6:35knew he wouldn't be here. And he read it and he always
- 6:38gives feedback. And I said, with the exception
- 6:40of the word old, this is you, Bob.
- 6:43This is you and Jeannie, you haven't allowed age.
- 6:47And, you know, Can you imagine He hasn't shared with us?
- 6:51But Can you imagine all that his eyes have seen over the years?
- 6:55I mean, think of all your eyes have seen and how old you are.
- 6:57And then you multiply all the minute, all the difficulties,
- 7:01all the hardships, and still sitting in our pastoral
- 7:05eldership meetings every Wednesday having to hear more
- 7:09and more. And I'm telling you, the brother
- 7:11is a great example. He hasn't become an angry man.
- 7:15He has a tenderness. He stands as an example to all
- 7:19of us. John in the 1st century, Bob now
- 7:23in our century, as a testimony of not becoming embittered
- 7:28against the very people that God has sent him to serve and to
- 7:32love and to care for. He's not impatient.
- 7:36And I'm not saying that John was perfect or Bob is perfect or
- 7:39that I'm a perfect, but that sense of, you know, my heart is
- 7:43to walk in the spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
- 7:47Isn't that your heart? I just want to walk in the
- 7:49spirit. I did.
- 7:51I know difficulties are going to come.
- 7:52I know difficult people are going to come.
- 7:54I know difficult situations are going to come.
- 7:57The problem is I don't know when they're going to come.
- 8:02And in order to be prepared for that, my habit, my habit, the
- 8:05habit of my life, I have to develop a habitual commitment to
- 8:10walk in the Spirit and to protect that part of my life.
- 8:15For John, the more he worshipped Jesus, the more he became
- 8:18gentle, caring, and kind. He was a true pastor and
- 8:22spiritual leader. And what he learned he modeled
- 8:26and passed on to those around him.
- 8:28So my little children, I know we're talking about hard things,
- 8:31not just sin in the abstract. When you read the Bible, we're
- 8:35not just learning truths in the abstract.
- 8:37We're not just gaining somebody's opinion.
- 8:40These are the realities and facts of our life.
- 8:43When you and I open the Bible, James teaches us that we're
- 8:47looking into a mirror. So these are not just abstract
- 8:51sin, discussions of sin or what sin might look like on someone
- 8:55else. This Is Us.
- 8:56And so John says, my little children, let me tell you, let
- 8:59me remind you why I'm writing these things to you.
- 9:02I'm writing these things to you so that you may not sin.
- 9:08There are 4 main points to the gossip to the letter of John
- 9:12that we learned earlier for purposes if you didn't write
- 9:15them down. The first one, John, wrote this
- 9:17letter so you might experience fullness of joy.
- 9:20We now come to the second one here in verse 1 of chapter 2, in
- 9:24that he wrote this letter so you might live a life free from sin.
- 9:28Later on in chapter 20, chapter 2, verse 26, He wants to expose
- 9:33spiritual frauds, and then in chapter 5 He wants to remind us
- 9:37of the assurance of our salvation.
- 9:40These are all areas of spiritual health among His flock.
- 9:43He cared deeply for their spiritual protection and by far
- 9:48the most important was their freedom from sin.
- 9:53First you confess, then you forsake, and this is the place
- 9:59where many fail. Not forsaking sin, not running
- 10:04away from it. Maybe even now the Holy Spirit
- 10:07is speaking to you to forsake that sin.
- 10:10The longer you carry it with you, the more friendly you, you
- 10:14know, it's becomes like a little pet and you kind of nurture.
- 10:17Think of bitterness for a second.
- 10:18How long you just nurture bitterness?
- 10:20The story. The longer you develop the
- 10:22story, the longer you develop the story.
- 10:25You're always the hero and everyone else is not.
- 10:29And that doesn't sound like the Lord.
- 10:30There's only one hero in your story, and it's actually not
- 10:33you. It's me.
- 10:36It's not me. It's not the hero in my story.
- 10:39You know who the hero in your story and mine is?
- 10:42Jesus. It's his finished work.
- 10:45We're not the heroes. Even in a difficult situation,
- 10:49God wants us to work it out. He wants us to come together and
- 10:53let Him get the victory. It's important that we forsake
- 10:56sin and not nurture it, to leave it behind.
- 10:59Let me show you stronger words than mine.
- 11:01Turn over to Matthew chapter 5. Matthew chapter 5.
- 11:07This is the teaching of Jesus that is very startling to the
- 11:12hearers then and to us today. Listen to what he says in
- 11:17Speaking of the sin of adultery. He says in verse 27, Matthew
- 11:22chapter 5, you have heard it said to those of old, You shall
- 11:27not commit adultery. But I say to you that whoever
- 11:31looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery
- 11:35in her in his heart. And that goes both ways.
- 11:38Of course, male, female. He says, if your right hand or
- 11:43excuse me, your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and
- 11:48cast it from you. For it is more profitable for
- 11:51you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body
- 11:55to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes
- 11:59you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you.
- 12:02For it is more profitable for you that one of your members
- 12:06perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
- 12:11In referring to your sin, cut it out and cut it off and cast it
- 12:17away is the language that Jesus uses.
- 12:20Of course, he is not instructing us to cut off body parts.
- 12:25I mean just a logical, let alone an exegetical look at the text,
- 12:30but just a logical look at the text.
- 12:33If you were able to take both your eye, you know, oh, my right
- 12:36eye caused me to sin and now you puck it out and castaway, oh,
- 12:39now my left hand and then my left eye caused it and now you
- 12:42have no eyes. But it's in your head.
- 12:45It's not your eyes. It is you and how you and I
- 12:50respond to sin. The essence of this teaching in
- 12:55Jesus, teaching us using the tool of hyperbole, is to help us
- 13:03remember that sin is nothing to be messed around with,
- 13:08especially when you're convinced you haven't.
- 13:12Like this example. You have heard it said you
- 13:15shouldn't commit adultery to everyone who's ever not
- 13:18committed adultery. Everyone would cry out Amen,
- 13:21Amen, Amen. Be so self-righteous in a
- 13:24teaching like that. Not me, not me, not me, which is
- 13:29a wonderful way of methodology of teaching that you come along
- 13:33and you come along and then Jesus says, but I'm going to
- 13:35tell you something, adultery is more than the ACT.
- 13:40It's far more than the ACT. It's your eyes, it's your hands,
- 13:45it's your thought, but really it's your heart.
- 13:48And if you don't deal radically with radical sin, you're going
- 13:52to live in it and it's going to destroy your life.
- 13:57Sin is really a matter of the heart and upfront here, Jesus
- 14:02teaching in Matthew and John here in first John chapter 2, he
- 14:06speaks of when he says I'm writing these things to you that
- 14:09you may not sin. He is asking for and he is
- 14:13teaching and even demanding a life of holiness.
- 14:19This is a life of holiness, holiness nurtured through humble
- 14:23repentance. Turn over now to Second
- 14:26Corinthians Chapter 7. Second Corinthians Chapter 7.
- 14:31I have noticed this come up a few times in our last few weeks
- 14:36of Bible studies. So to me it's very important.
- 14:40These are this is a very important principle that I want
- 14:42to show you from the text. I noticed that I've been quoting
- 14:46it recently, but I want to show it to you from the text.
- 14:50Holiness is nurtured through humility and repentance.
- 14:55And when you get to 2nd Corinthians, notice with me in
- 14:58verse Chapter 7, verse 9. Now I rejoice not that you were
- 15:05made sorry, but that your sorrow LED.
- 15:08What does your Bible say to repentance for you were made
- 15:14sorry in a godly manner that you might suffer lost from us in
- 15:19nothing forgot. Mark this circle it underline it
- 15:23if you have a highlighter. One of the most important verses
- 15:26in all the Bible, but not necessarily one that's
- 15:29emphasized. The Bible says godly sorrow
- 15:32produces repentance to salvation not to be regretted, but the
- 15:38sorrow of the world produces death.
- 15:44It is the conviction of the Holy Spirit that brings you to godly
- 15:48sorrow, which leads you to repentance and salvation, or not
- 15:53just salvation in the forgiveness like, like the
- 15:57salvific moment you were born again, but salvation in its
- 16:00general sense, freedom. When you are saved, you're free.
- 16:06You're rescued. When you and I live in
- 16:09repentance, we have been freed from the bondage of sin.
- 16:13Repentance, I realize that I've sinned against God.
- 16:17Repentance, I realize that I've done wrong things.
- 16:21Repentance, I realize that I've hurt people.
- 16:24I realize Repentance, I've realized I've been living
- 16:27selfishly. Repentance.
- 16:29I've not been considerate of the needs of others at all.
- 16:33And as I begin to look at myself honestly in response to the Holy
- 16:36Spirit, I begin. There is developed in me more
- 16:41than merely my emotions, more than merely my physical
- 16:46emotions. I begin to sorrow over how
- 16:49violent, wicked, and evil are, the things that I've been doing,
- 16:54the damage that they really do to the people that I love and I
- 16:57care for, the lack of Koinonia now that I no longer enjoy.
- 17:02I'm not in fellowship. I'm not in fellowship with God.
- 17:06I'm not in fellowship with other believers.
- 17:09This is when God's Spirit begins to work deep in your heart to
- 17:13reveal the truth to you about yourself.
- 17:15Sometimes it comes in a Bible study, but sometimes it comes in
- 17:19a night vision or it comes in a morning devotion, or it comes
- 17:23with the verse of the day, just the verse of the day and you're
- 17:27like, how did the God know this? Well, God knows all things.
- 17:32The verse of the day or the brother in your life sends you a
- 17:34verse or you get a text or an e-mail where the Spirit of God
- 17:40begins to work deeply. We have to remember the Bible
- 17:44declares in Jeremiah chapter 17, verse nine, that the heart is
- 17:48deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.
- 17:51Who can know it? I'll answer that question for
- 17:54you. God knows your heart.
- 17:57I don't always know my heart, but God knows my heart.
- 18:00And oftentimes that's used in a way to defend ourselves.
- 18:03Oh, you know, you're just judging me, brothers.
- 18:05God knows my heart. I trust me.
- 18:07I know God knows your heart. I know God knows your heart.
- 18:10I hope you believe that as you defend and as you fight and as
- 18:14you resist and you stand there in pride.
- 18:17God knows my heart. I know He knows your heart, and
- 18:19you reveal a little bit of it to us.
- 18:22We know a little bit of your heart too.
- 18:24And it's important that you let the Spirit of God work in your
- 18:27life. Time is short.
- 18:30The coming of the Lord is at hand day by day and week by week
- 18:34and month by month. We see our life just going
- 18:37forward, going forward, going forward.
- 18:39And listen, only what's done for the Lord is going to last.
- 18:42Only what's done for the Lord is going to matter.
- 18:45And it begins and rooted in holiness, not a life of sinless
- 18:50perfection that is not at all what John teaches, but a life
- 18:53lived in the direction that Jesus desires, a life without
- 18:58practicing or living or clinging to sin.
- 19:02We see this with the phrase back in verse chapter 1, chapter 2,
- 19:06verse one in first John. And if anyone sins, this phrase
- 19:13reveals to us that we will not live.
- 19:15We will not live a sinless perfect, perfect life.
- 19:20I mean, that's obviously not possible for any past sin view.
- 19:23The Bible says that if you have broken the law in one area,
- 19:26you've broken it all. So even just one, which all of
- 19:29us can find at least one, like rotten, stinking sin in our
- 19:33lives. So that that eliminates us from
- 19:36ever being perfect the rest of our lives.
- 19:39But there is also that ongoing sin in our lives, the stumbling,
- 19:44the the honest mistakes. I mean, like, you know how many
- 19:47times we get caught called on the carpet and our first
- 19:49response is, well, I didn't mean it that way.
- 19:51Yeah, but you did it. Yeah, but I didn't mean it that
- 19:53way. I know, but you did it.
- 19:55Yeah, but I didn't mean to bust your nose open.
- 19:57I didn't mean. Yeah, but you wanted to hit me,
- 20:00right? Yeah.
- 20:00I kind of wanted to hit you, but I didn't want to bust your nose.
- 20:02Like we, we, we we can't judge all of our behavior just by our
- 20:06motives. We have to judge our behavior by
- 20:10the behavior. And we let the Lord sort out the
- 20:13motives. He can sort out our motives.
- 20:15But it's pretty, pretty obvious if we use a silly illustration.
- 20:18You don't go around punching people in the nose.
- 20:21Can I get an Amen on that? Except for everyone that punched
- 20:23someone in the nose this week. Don't punch people in the nose.
- 20:25Like that's just pretty obvious. If anyone sins, if anyone
- 20:29punches someone in the nose, you have an advocate.
- 20:32The Bible says you have an advocate.
- 20:36Jesus Christ the righteous. He's our advocate.
- 20:39Notice with the Father, we can't live life and sin just because
- 20:47we know we're forgiven or that the blood of Jesus Christ
- 20:50cleanses us from all sin, past, present and future.
- 20:54Nowhere to avoid sin altogether as much as is in us.
- 20:58But if we do sin, which we do, we have someone on our side.
- 21:06There's three things as we close today, just three simple truths
- 21:09that John shares that I'll share with you.
- 21:11There's three truths about Jesus that are important to grasp so
- 21:16that you can understand how much He loves you #1 He's our
- 21:19advocate #2 He's righteous. And thirdly, he's our
- 21:24propitiation. I'll explain that word in a
- 21:27moment, but it's good to remember the hard words.
- 21:29And I'll give you the simple one, but that when you remember
- 21:32these hard words, propitiation. This word propitiation, by the
- 21:37way, is the reason why I couldn't read the King James
- 21:41Bible anymore. My pastor used the King James
- 21:44Bible, so he had a King James Bible.
- 21:46I'm going to use a King James Bible, but when I came across
- 21:50propitiation, it was like the 10th word I had to look up
- 21:53because I didn't know what it meant.
- 21:56And I'm like, there's got to be a better way.
- 21:58And I got the new King James and guess what?
- 21:59The word is still there. But most of the other ones they
- 22:03did in a more modern, but now that's 30 years ago.
- 22:06And one of the versions that I really love to use in my
- 22:09devotional reading is the new Living Translation.
- 22:12But even then that I can see that's starting to become dated
- 22:15as the days go forward. But I like remembering these
- 22:19harder words because then it'll help me remember the definition
- 22:22and we'll get there in a moment. So #1 Jesus is our advocate.
- 22:27You may be surprised. You remember I, I've taught you
- 22:30over the years that there are times when the Greek word is
- 22:32very significant New Testament written in Greek.
- 22:35This is one of those times. The word advocate is the word
- 22:38paracletos. Now it's actually a different
- 22:41form, but it gets translated into English.
- 22:43Paracletos, doesn't that word sound familiar?
- 22:46It's the same word that John used in the voice when he was
- 22:50recording what Jesus was teaching us about the Holy
- 22:53Spirit. I will send you another
- 22:56comforter, John chapter 14, the Paracleteus 1 to come alongside.
- 23:02It's for your reference. It's John 14 verses 16 through
- 23:0518. But another way that word was
- 23:08used in the 1st century, that Greek word in modern vernacular,
- 23:11because this was the common language of the day.
- 23:15They would also use this word to describe someone who offered
- 23:18legal aid on behalf of another. We still use that word today in
- 23:22the legal, in the legal realm, advocates, someone that stands
- 23:25on your behalf, someone that stands alongside of you to
- 23:30defend you and to speak for you. In the 1st century, they use
- 23:34this word for someone who offered legal aid on behalf of
- 23:37another. Today we'd call that person a
- 23:40lawyer or an attorney, an advocate that would prove the
- 23:43merit of the accused. But Jesus is not like a any
- 23:47human attorney. Jesus does not prove the merit
- 23:51of us, the accused, but rather transport transfers that guilt
- 23:56upon himself and stands in the gap on our behalf.
- 24:00He pleads our case by taking the penalty himself.
- 24:04A great example of of that is in Proverbs chapter 17, verse 17.
- 24:09A friend loves at all times, but a brother is born for adversity.
- 24:15When you and I sin, we have an advocate, one that's called
- 24:20alongside of us to declare our case before the Father.
- 24:23And how does he declare our case before the Father?
- 24:26He says they're guilty. Sometimes Jesus will declare our
- 24:31guilt faster than we do guilty. But she belongs to me.
- 24:37I don't know how it all works in the spiritual realm, but He
- 24:41claims you as His own, as His friend.
- 24:45His blood is sufficient to forgive you of your sin.
- 24:51He stands as an advocate for us, and He stands as an advocate
- 24:56with us. I don't know if you've ever
- 24:59experienced this, but Paul the Apostle did.
- 25:02Paul the apostle experienced some of the most closest friends
- 25:06in his life, abandoned him in his greatest time of need, just
- 25:10like Jesus did. Jesus experienced those that
- 25:13were closest to him depart from him in his greatest time of
- 25:17need. And for those of you that have
- 25:19experienced that, I was speaking to someone recently about the
- 25:23difficulty in their life, about the challenges and how they're
- 25:26really at the bottom in their lives.
- 25:29And I said, yeah, you're going to learn a couple of things
- 25:32because he was talking to me about how during this
- 25:34difficulty, of all the people he was connected with, only a few
- 25:38people really have reached out to him and ministered to him.
- 25:41And I said, yeah, you're going to find that out.
- 25:44You're going to find out in deep, deep difficulty number
- 25:47one, who your real friends are. And you want to know that you
- 25:51want to know there are some, you know, there are different
- 25:53acquaintances and buddies and prayer partners.
- 25:56And but there are those friends like it says here, the brother,
- 26:00a friend loves it all times a brother's born for adversity.
- 26:03There are those who your real friends are not that other
- 26:05friends aren't real, but I mean the depth of relationship,
- 26:08they're just some that are going to be deeper and they're going
- 26:10to show up in your greatest need, but you're also going to
- 26:13learn something else. And you want to learn this, but
- 26:16you really don't. And you need to learn this, but
- 26:19you really don't want to. Number one, you'll learn who
- 26:21your friends are, your real friends are, and #2 you're going
- 26:24to learn who your real friends are not.
- 26:28Because unfortunately, in the human condition, there are
- 26:31always those that want to take advantage of your weakness.
- 26:36I don't know what angle it's going to come from.
- 26:38And if you've never experienced this, God bless you.
- 26:41I hope you never have to. I hope it's never a part of your
- 26:44testimony. I hope you never have to feel
- 26:47the weight of someone you thought would.
- 26:49It's almost like, you know, you fell down a well and somebody's
- 26:52out there and they've got the rope in there.
- 26:54Oh, it's you so and so it's so glad that you came to rescue.
- 26:57And they start putting the rope down and then they drop the
- 26:59whole thing and walk away. You're like whoa and say some
- 27:05words as they walk away. I never expected that.
- 27:08But it was your trial, that depth of trial that revealed to
- 27:12you not only who was around you, but also what is in you and what
- 27:20is in me. You see, Jesus is our advocate.
- 27:24He's promised not to leave or forsake us.
- 27:27He stands both with us and for US #2 notice He stands as a
- 27:35righteous advocate. He's not just any advocate.
- 27:40And we don't not just need any advocate before the Father.
- 27:46And many stop short of this advocacy because they've been
- 27:50taught to take their concerns to a priest and a priest will
- 27:54absolve them. And so it just ends there.
- 27:58The priest becomes the advocate. But you know that a priest is
- 28:01not a righteous advocate. He does not stand in the place
- 28:06of God, although he is presented as such.
- 28:09And that's carried over into the Protestant Church of which you
- 28:12and I are a part of. And many people stop short at
- 28:16the pastor or at the elder as an advocate.
- 28:20But we are not righteous advocates.
- 28:24A pastor will serve you well. A pastor will serve you well.
- 28:28You know, a pastor serving you well as he attempts to get your
- 28:32eyes back on the Lord. That's where you belong.
- 28:36Get your eyes back on the Lord. Whatever it is, get your eyes
- 28:39back on the Lord, because He, he's your righteous advocate.
- 28:45He alone is holy, righteous, and perfect.
- 28:50And the matter of sin requires perfect holiness to erase it.
- 28:56Some advocates are in the business for themselves, taking
- 28:58advantage of that role in position.
- 29:01They're in it for the money, for the prestige.
- 29:04But Jesus is in it for you. He died for you.
- 29:08He is righteous without fault or failure.
- 29:10The Bible says that He who knew no sin became sin for us, that
- 29:14we might become the righteousness of God.
- 29:18He alone is our righteous advocate, which brings us to #3
- 29:21and verse 2, just to emphasize, He says not only is he our, He's
- 29:27our advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous, and He Himself is the
- 29:32propitiation for our sins, not for ours only, but also for the
- 29:37whole world. Salvation is available to
- 29:42whosoever will let him come. The blood of Jesus Christ is
- 29:47sufficient to forgive the sins of anyone who will come to Him.
- 29:53This is not a universalism. There is a false teaching that
- 29:57it the blood of Jesus Christ. Everybody's going to get saved
- 30:00in the end. Because notice it says right
- 30:01here his sins for the whole world.
- 30:05This is the the ability for being born again to have your
- 30:09sins forgiven is available to the whole world, but only
- 30:13effectual to those who turn to him.
- 30:17Not everybody gets saved. The blood of Jesus Christ is
- 30:20enough to save anyone, but it's only effective and those who
- 30:25repent and turn to him. Now that word propitiation
- 30:29literally means satisfaction or another way of thinking about it
- 30:34is atoning sacrifice, atoning sacrifice.
- 30:39We've learned the word atonement by letting it sound sound out
- 30:43itself at one meant the blood of Jesus Christ has made you and I
- 30:49at 1. The blood of Jesus Christ brings
- 30:51us into relationship with Him at one minute.
- 30:57This is the atoning sacrifice, the satisfaction of a debt, the
- 31:01payment in full. First, John 22 in the New Living
- 31:05Translation in the NLT puts it this way.
- 31:08He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins, and not
- 31:13only our sins, but the sins for all the world.
- 31:16So He's our righteous advocate whose death on the cross atones
- 31:22for our sins, because the problem of sin is serious.
- 31:28How many times so far in our Bible study have you heard me
- 31:31share that with you? It's serious.
- 31:33Nothing to be messed around with.
- 31:35Man is definitely guilty, both by nature and by action.
- 31:40Both by nature and action, the problem is so serious that man
- 31:44cannot fix it. The Bible says in Ezekiel
- 31:47chapter 18, verse 4, Behold, All Souls are mine.
- 31:51The soul of the Father as well as the soul of the Son is mine.
- 31:54The soul who sins shall die. But through Jesus Christ, God's
- 32:01holy anger against sin has been swallowed up and removed by the
- 32:05blood of the Lamb, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of
- 32:09the world. He's become our satisfaction
- 32:13before the Father. Think about this for a moment.
- 32:16He's our advocate, always standing and praying and
- 32:19interceding on our behalf. Romans chapter 8 that we have a
- 32:22few minutes. Turn over to Romans chapter 8 so
- 32:24you can put these scriptures together.
- 32:26Sometimes it's just good to see it.
- 32:28Whether you're on your phone or you have a paper Bible, flip
- 32:31over or turn to Romans chapter 8 and let's just see a couple of
- 32:35times. This beautiful truth of his
- 32:39advocacy is mentioned in different ways.
- 32:42Notice Romans chapter 8. When you get there, go to verse
- 32:4534. It says who is he who condemns?
- 32:50Well, I'll tell you who he condemns.
- 32:52The devil. He condemns day and night.
- 32:55He accuses you day and night, and he's not always wrong.
- 32:58Did you know that His accusations are not always
- 33:01wrong. There are times when we
- 33:03cooperate with the accusations of the enemy through our own
- 33:06behavior. But he's condemning and
- 33:08accusing. But Lotus, it says it's Christ
- 33:11that died. So get your eyes off the devil
- 33:13and get your eyes on the Lord. Get your ears away from the
- 33:16accusations of the enemy and get them back to the Lord.
- 33:19This is not what He says in Revelation.
- 33:20He who has ears to hear what, let him hear what the Spirit
- 33:25says to the churches. Notice what he says here in
- 33:28Romans 8. Furthermore, He's also risen.
- 33:30Who is even at the right hand of God, doing what?
- 33:33Making intercession for us, advocating on our behalf,
- 33:40praying for us day and night before the Father.
- 33:43Let me show you another one. Hebrews Chapter 7, Hebrews
- 33:46Chapter 7, go all the way back in the scriptures.
- 33:49Hebrews Chapter 7, wasn't too long ago that we were studying
- 33:55Chapter 7. Notice verse 25 in Hebrews.
- 34:00It's one of the advantages of going through the Bible verse by
- 34:02verse. We cover it all and we went in
- 34:05depth on on this section in Chapter 7 where he says
- 34:08therefore Speaking of Jesus, He is also able to save to the
- 34:13uttermost or as one author once said to the gutter most
- 34:18depending on where you are. Those who come to God through
- 34:21him since what he ever lives to make intercession for them.
- 34:31You are not forgotten. You are not overlooked, you are
- 34:38not disregarded or set aside. Jesus, your friend, has you on
- 34:42his mind and on his heart, interceding for you, pulling for
- 34:48you, coming to the Father as your advocate.
- 34:53His ministry continues even as we study together, allowing us
- 34:58to know the riches of His grace. In Ephesians chapter 1, the
- 35:02Ephesian the richness of His grace which He made to a bound
- 35:05toward us in all wisdom and prudence and when we get there
- 35:10eventually in Ephesians in chapter 1, verse 8, that's the
- 35:14verse that was used to inspire the name of our radio Bible
- 35:19teaching program abounding grace that is grace abounds to you.
- 35:24Why? Because of the riches, the
- 35:26redemption of his blood. Coming back to first John, he's
- 35:32writing to a group of believers that need to be reminded, that
- 35:35need to be stirred up, the need to know that they're not alone
- 35:38in their sin and that you can come out of it right now.
- 35:43You can allow the depth and the work of the Holy Spirit to work
- 35:46in you right now that you realize that your sin first of
- 35:51all is against a holy and righteous God.
- 35:53Then it's with someone else, Then it's against society, then
- 35:56it's against the church, then it's against a friend where
- 35:59that's secondary to the sin against God.
- 36:03And Psalm 51 is a great those of you wrestling with this, those
- 36:07of you justifying it, those of you that are thinking it's not
- 36:10that big a deal, or go to just meditate on Psalm 51.
- 36:14God put Psalm 51 in the Bible for us to see a true heart of
- 36:17repentance, a brokenness in David's life.
- 36:21When you're reading through the true story of David as it's
- 36:24recorded for us in the Bible, it doesn't take much Sin, sin, sin.
- 36:28The guy, he, he truly, it was surprisingly the type of sin
- 36:33that came through David's life. It was, it's easy for you and
- 36:36it's easy for me to see it in David's life.
- 36:38It took time for him to see it, but God sent Nathan, gave him a
- 36:44little story and all I can't believe it.
- 36:48Kill the man, kill the man. That wasn't even the
- 36:51consequence, the proper biblical consequence for the story that
- 36:57David share or that Nathan share with David.
- 36:59But you know what it was? It was the consequence for
- 37:02Davidson that he carried around every day pretending it's not
- 37:08there self righteously fighting building walls.
- 37:12It wasn't it. David didn't.
- 37:14David needed to be broken, and I wonder who's listening to me
- 37:20today that you need to be broken.
- 37:23But you know, you can cast yourself upon the rock today.
- 37:27You don't have to have the rock crush you.
- 37:29You can cast yourself upon the rock.
- 37:32You can come to him today and come clean for the sake of,
- 37:37well, coming back to first John 1 to walk in the light.
- 37:41Let it come to the light as He is in the light.
- 37:46If we choose to walk in the light, we have fellowship with
- 37:50one another. Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses
- 37:53us from all sin. We start to confess and repent
- 37:58and live in life of humility. I love back in verse 2 that
- 38:06salvation is available for the whole world.
- 38:08It reminded me of John 316 who I'm going to read it from the
- 38:12old King James, how I memorized it.
- 38:14Whosoever believes in him, whosoever John Chapter 7, Jesus
- 38:19said if anyone thirsts, I'm beginning to think about if the
- 38:24Lord allows us at the end of the year to go to Israel.
- 38:26I'm beginning to think about the stops again.
- 38:28And one of my favorite stops is actually not much of A place.
- 38:32It's just a bunch of steps with a wall behind us.
- 38:35But as we sit on the steps and we look down the hill, we think
- 38:39of how the priest would go down in that time of the feast and go
- 38:44down with water in the pool of Siloam and then come back and
- 38:47then pour it out. They do that for seven days
- 38:49until the final day. And that's when Jesus showed up.
- 38:53That's when Jesus showed up in John Chapter 7 and says, and all
- 38:56this water and all this beautiful picture and typology.
- 38:59And then Jesus stops it all and says, does anybody thirst?
- 39:03Is anybody thirsty here? Because I have rivers of living
- 39:07water, I have something that will quench your thirst forever.
- 39:13So much more than having to go down with the pots of water and
- 39:17pouring out that last one. Romans chapter 5 verse 8.
- 39:20It says God demonstrates His own love toward us and that while we
- 39:27were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- 39:32You come to Him as you are, and God begins the work on the
- 39:37inside. You can just come to Him today.
- 39:40Amen. Father, thank you for the
- 39:42reminder. You're our advocate.
- 39:45You are righteous. You are the satisfaction of the
- 39:51debt, our propitiation, our atoning sacrifice.
- 39:55And forgive us, Lord, when we, as we often do, resist the Holy
- 40:02Spirit in our lives, and we fight.
- 40:11We don't come clean before you, and we settle to live a life
- 40:19under the accusations of the devil and the condemnation of
- 40:24the enemy, even as we condemn ourselves.
- 40:26And we replay our story over and over again so that we're the
- 40:31only one that's the hero, displacing the true hero on all
- 40:35of our lives. Can we just declare you our hero
- 40:39tonight, our righteous advocate, our our healer, our Savior, our
- 40:47friend, our support, our prayer partner, intercessory
- 40:54intercessor on our behalf, the giver of life, the sustainer of
- 40:59life, The one that gives us hope and purpose and direction.
- 41:04The one that reveals day by day and step by step.
- 41:09The one that comforts. The one that sent the Holy
- 41:13Spirit, the Comforter to us, The one who keeps his promises.
- 41:17The one who promised never to leave or forsake us.
- 41:21The one who's ministering to our prodigal kids, to our family
- 41:25members. The one who's comforting in the
- 41:27hotel rooms right now, comforting in the hospital bed,
- 41:31comforting in the the semi truck that's driving across the
- 41:35country. The one who's reminding us and
- 41:39bringing to our remembrance the things that we have learned.
- 41:42The one that is healing broken hearts and comforting and
- 41:48helping the single dad, the single mom helping those poor
- 41:52kids that are caught up in the mess of their parents and they
- 41:56don't know what to do and they don't know how to respond.
- 42:00I pray for those that are taking steps back.
- 42:03You're the one that's leading. You're the one that's guiding.
- 42:06I thank you, God, for how much sin was not committed today
- 42:09because you helped us, because you prevented us, because you
- 42:15convicted us, because you prompted us, because you
- 42:21activated our conscience. You're the hero and we're the
- 42:27dependent, and we declare that to you tonight.
- 42:32You're the one that builds the house.
- 42:34Unless you're build the house, we labor in vain who build it.
- 42:39So pour out your spirit on us, Scott, as we just gather midweek
- 42:43to seek your face. Get a midweek, you know,
- 42:46strengthening in our souls. May we run to you, not to a
- 42:51priest, not to a pastor, but may we run to you as our own, as our
- 42:55only righteous advocate. Come clean before you and then
- 42:59come clean with others so that we can be in unity of the
- 43:03Spirit. True Koinonia, true honesty and
- 43:07fidelity, like a cleanliness in our lives, cleanse us from all
- 43:12unrighteousness. Thank you God for meeting us
- 43:15here in Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
- 43:21encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
