- 0:04Speaker 1: All right, It's Friday morning, January thirteenth, and this is
- 0:07Speaker 1: the first of our emergency podcasts for twenty twenty three.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We started these back in twenty twenty to kind of
- 0:13Speaker 1: fill in the blanks between Patriots unfiltered shows, and we
- 0:16Speaker 1: only do them when we think we need to address
- 0:19Speaker 1: some breaking news and we can't wait for our next show.
- 0:22Speaker 1: So I think last night's statement that was issued by
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Patriots, I think larrents an emergency podcast. So Paul's
- 0:31Speaker 1: joining me, Deuce is joining me. We want to talk
- 0:33Speaker 1: about this, this release that came out. Patriots to extend
- 0:38Speaker 1: Girard Mayo semi Colon will begin interviewing for an offensive coordinator.
- 0:44Speaker 1: The NEUMLA Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick had begun
- 0:47Speaker 1: contract extension discussions with Gerard Mayo that would keep him
- 0:51Speaker 1: with the team long term period. In addition, the team
- 0:54Speaker 1: will begin interviewing for offensive coordinator candidates beginning next week.
- 0:59Speaker 1: So this is not the usual standard operating procedure for
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Doingham Patriots and therefore the emergency podcast. Right, So,
- 1:08Speaker 1: like when you saw this last night, what did you
- 1:10Speaker 1: guys think? I was surprised. It just is out of
- 1:13Speaker 1: character to me to have the Patriots put releases out
- 1:16Speaker 1: sort of talking about what they're going to do as
- 1:18Speaker 1: opposed to what they've already done. So so I think
- 1:21Speaker 1: this is like whoa, you know this is this is
- 1:23Speaker 1: a major ce change. No, I think this is a
- 1:26Speaker 1: little bit of a different offseason that they're entering into.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Just the fact that on Wednesday, I think that they
- 1:32Speaker 1: had Tom Curran's story come out and he sort of
- 1:36Speaker 1: detailed the fact that Robert and Bill Belichick did in
- 1:39Speaker 1: fact meet, had some details of what was about to come.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I think this sort of solidifies that lets everybody know
- 1:45Speaker 1: we're serious about changes in the especially on the offensive
- 1:49Speaker 1: side of the ball. Damnan. It seems like this is
- 1:50Speaker 1: kind of what fans of the Patriot Nation want to hear.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I mean, start with Jerob Mayo. I mean, I was,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I was excited by that news. I mean, I think
- 1:55Speaker 1: he's you're seeing him start to get head coaching candidate,
- 1:58Speaker 1: you know, interviews in those kind of things, and you
- 2:01Speaker 1: wonder how it's going to translate. What does this mean?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Is it an assistant head coach role? Is this a yeah?
- 2:06Speaker 1: What would keep the ordinator? I'm not sure. Money, certainly
- 2:08Speaker 1: money is going to be involved. We know that part
- 2:10Speaker 1: it comes with the title. But clearly Gerald Mayo has
- 2:12Speaker 1: been here as a player as a coach now very
- 2:14Speaker 1: respected around the league, and I think that that kind
- 2:16Speaker 1: of stability is a good thing to have in place.
- 2:18Speaker 1: We got to see how it all comes together. I mean,
- 2:20Speaker 1: my first thoughts were, this is Robert Kraft putting it
- 2:24Speaker 1: on record that things are going to happen fairly soon,
- 2:29Speaker 1: you know, in order for fans to know that, you know.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And whether or not Bill Belichick signed off on this statement,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I think is irrelevant. I don't think it matters. Maybe
- 2:38Speaker 1: he did, maybe he didn't, But this from to me,
- 2:42Speaker 1: this was Robert Kraft. This came from Robert Kraft. I
- 2:45Speaker 1: don't know that for a fact, but it's got his
- 2:47Speaker 1: fingerprints all over it because he wanted fans to know
- 2:51Speaker 1: this is really going to happen. Now. Yeah, I mean
- 2:53Speaker 1: the narrative on your your your station yesterday. What's the
- 3:00Speaker 1: keep Bill Belichick from slow playing this whole thing and
- 3:02Speaker 1: taking his time like he usually does with big decisions.
- 3:05Speaker 1: For good reason. But I think there's an urgency I
- 3:09Speaker 1: think in ownership's mind that you know, we have to
- 3:11Speaker 1: get this done good candidates. We're gonna lose them if
- 3:14Speaker 1: we don't move quickly, you know. And we still have
- 3:18Speaker 1: to adhere to the Rooney rule. So it's not like
- 3:20Speaker 1: we can just pick one guy and hire him. We
- 3:23Speaker 1: have to you know, interview minority candidates. Well, it's going
- 3:26Speaker 1: to take some time, so we have to get moving.
- 3:29Speaker 1: You know, it was just announced that the Patriots coaching
- 3:31Speaker 1: staff is gonna be at the Shrine game. Well, they're
- 3:32Speaker 1: not going to be hiring, you know, interviewing people down there,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and that's coming up pretty quick, so we got to
- 3:37Speaker 1: get this done quickly. Yeah, and I do think that
- 3:40Speaker 1: you know, we talk a lot about Bill O'Brien, but
- 3:43Speaker 1: you you mentioned the Rooney rule, so it's not going
- 3:45Speaker 1: to be as cut and dried and simple as just saying, well,
- 3:47Speaker 1: we're going to reach out to a guy that we know.
- 3:50Speaker 1: You know, it may end up being Bill O'Brien, but
- 3:51Speaker 1: they're gonna have to look at some other qualified candidates too.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And I think it's gonna be interesting. I think Mike's
- 3:57Speaker 1: point about mail to me I find interesting too, because
- 4:00Speaker 1: I don't think it'll just be about a bag of money.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I think it'll be about some responsibilities as well. Otherwise
- 4:07Speaker 1: he has an opportunity. Yes he has a head coaching interview,
- 4:10Speaker 1: but he's also you know, been talked about in defensive
- 4:13Speaker 1: coordinator circles. So I think you might start to see
- 4:16Speaker 1: some some titles in New England. I know we don't
- 4:19Speaker 1: believe in him, Freddie, but I think we're gonna have
- 4:20Speaker 1: to see him at something. I do too, and you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: like you know, Mayo has to be concerned with his
- 4:25Speaker 1: career path and we talked about it yesterday on the show,
- 4:27Speaker 1: like like what evidence does has he done in his
- 4:31Speaker 1: job to show another team like you can be a
- 4:34Speaker 1: DC or a head coach and it's it's hard right now,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, for him. So yeah, I think he's gonna
- 4:40Speaker 1: have to be given some Maybe he's assistant head coach,
- 4:43Speaker 1: like Mike says, like Steve Belichicker's defensive couch. But even then,
- 4:46Speaker 1: like knowing what happened with McDaniels, like we don't know
- 4:49Speaker 1: like what brought McDaniels back here from Indie, but some
- 4:53Speaker 1: surmise that it was some promise that you know, and
- 4:57Speaker 1: that didn't happen. So I from Gerard Mayo, I saw
- 5:00Speaker 1: all that go down, Like Okay, I need more than
- 5:04Speaker 1: just a handshake. I need something in writing that says
- 5:08Speaker 1: if I stay here, X, Y and Z is going
- 5:11Speaker 1: to happen. Yeah, you know, And I think to your point, Fred,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, Job Mayo probably with this, whatever this my
- 5:15Speaker 1: new role might be, he's probably gonna get that experience
- 5:18Speaker 1: that you're, you know, wondering if he has that, if
- 5:19Speaker 1: he goes elsewhere, they'll gonna open up the world to him.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I mean, And that was exactly what I was thinking.
- 5:24Speaker 1: That was where I was gonna go with Josh McDaniels.
- 5:28Speaker 1: You know, you do wonder if this is I don't
- 5:30Speaker 1: want to say a succession plan, but it seems like
- 5:31Speaker 1: there's an effort to keep Joe Mayo around, Uh, you know.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And then the other thing I would just say about
- 5:36Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator we talked on Patriots Unfiltered this week.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I was a little worried that, yeah, they're going to
- 5:40Speaker 1: bring somebody in, he's not going to be an offensive coordinator.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Now this announcement makes me think that they are actually
- 5:45Speaker 1: going to hire an offensive coordinator for this team that
- 5:47Speaker 1: will have that title. Best part of the release for
- 5:50Speaker 1: me is that I feel like they're going to be
- 5:52Speaker 1: coordinators in plays. And again you you bring up a
- 5:55Speaker 1: good point for you because that does require some some
- 5:59Speaker 1: research here. You're gonna to bring in some some quality candidates.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And I think that's a good thing too if even
- 6:04Speaker 1: though you might look at it and people can be
- 6:06Speaker 1: skeptical and they'll say, well the Rooney rule, it's it's
- 6:08Speaker 1: a dog and pony show. No. I think that allows
- 6:11Speaker 1: you to be introduced to other people, more personnel around
- 6:15Speaker 1: the league. That's one of my criticisms Belichick is it's
- 6:18Speaker 1: always in house. It's always guys he knows. I think
- 6:21Speaker 1: sometimes you can learn things by meeting people you don't
- 6:23Speaker 1: know quite as well. We were doing some quick searches
- 6:26Speaker 1: this morning and you know there's a guy Alcorn State
- 6:29Speaker 1: head coach, Fred McNairy. He's the brother of Steve McNair.
- 6:32Speaker 1: You know, like since he's been there is the head coach.
- 6:34Speaker 1: They've won like, you know, four conference championships, you know,
- 6:38Speaker 1: six divisions. You know, they've had success. And he's off
- 6:41Speaker 1: he used to be a quarterback. Um, you know, why
- 6:45Speaker 1: not get to know this guy? And I've seen Scott
- 6:47Speaker 1: Pioli talk about some of these these candidates who from
- 6:49Speaker 1: hbcuum you know programs, and another one is the Virginia
- 6:54Speaker 1: is a Virginia state A right. You know, I don't
- 6:57Speaker 1: know a lot about these guys intimately, but this is
- 6:59Speaker 1: my point is they probably don't either. So even if
- 7:02Speaker 1: you don't end up hiring one of them, I think
- 7:04Speaker 1: you can get introduced to maybe some elements of offense
- 7:07Speaker 1: that right now you're not as comfortable with, not as
- 7:09Speaker 1: familiar with, and then who knows, maybe you get blown
- 7:11Speaker 1: away by somebody and you get a candidate that you
- 7:14Speaker 1: didn't necessarily think of at first. But I think if
- 7:17Speaker 1: you do go to the coordinator route, even on defense,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you're gonna have to start doing some of those on
- 7:22Speaker 1: the defensive side too. Even if you promote within, you
- 7:25Speaker 1: still have to go through the process. So I think
- 7:27Speaker 1: that's a good thing for Bill Belichick specifically, but the
- 7:30Speaker 1: Patriots and yeah, so like even if like it's like
- 7:33Speaker 1: even if they said, Okay, Girard you're gonna be the DC,
- 7:36Speaker 1: or Girard you're going to be the assistant head coach
- 7:38Speaker 1: and Steve your Belichick you're gonna be the DC, you
- 7:41Speaker 1: can't just do that. Now, you have to you have
- 7:45Speaker 1: to interview people for the defensive coordinator. Even if one
- 7:48Speaker 1: of those guys are gonna be it, you still have
- 7:50Speaker 1: to interview. You can't just you know, the Rooney rule
- 7:53Speaker 1: away it's worded. You can't just elevate somebody into the
- 7:56Speaker 1: position without having done interviews. So it's not that simple.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And you have and again, why the release. We got
- 8:03Speaker 1: to get movment on this stuff. That's got to get movement.
- 8:05Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say. I mean, there's
- 8:06Speaker 1: a lot of complicated pieces and a lot of more
- 8:08Speaker 1: things to come, but I would just say it's a
- 8:09Speaker 1: very simple statement. But if I'm a Patriots fan, I
- 8:12Speaker 1: like what I'm hearing. I like stability in the coaching staff.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I liked Gerob Mayo kind of sticking around. That's positive
- 8:17Speaker 1: for me. And this is what everybody's been talking about
- 8:19Speaker 1: all season. We need offensive coordinators, we need offensive guys.
- 8:22Speaker 1: That seems the trajectory. We're not even a week out
- 8:24Speaker 1: since they lost to the Bills and the season ended.
- 8:26Speaker 1: We're already on the right path. So just guessing, I
- 8:28Speaker 1: think we're all on board. We still think that O'Brien
- 8:31Speaker 1: is the front runner for offensive I mean, I do
- 8:33Speaker 1: think that that's where Bill at heart probably likes to
- 8:36Speaker 1: stay with the comfort, but I do feel like this
- 8:39Speaker 1: value and looking out, Oh yeah, absolutely gonna get some
- 8:42Speaker 1: other new people in. And maybe you made another name
- 8:45Speaker 1: that you that you you know, respond to that has
- 8:47Speaker 1: some ideas that Marcus Brady is a guy who was
- 8:50Speaker 1: with Indianapolis and he actually got fired the week before
- 8:53Speaker 1: we played the Colts, um you know, back in the
- 8:55Speaker 1: middle of the season. You know, he's a guy that
- 8:58Speaker 1: I think has had some success with a lot of
- 9:00Speaker 1: different you know, he's been in Indianapolis with Frank Reich
- 9:02Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, it didn't go well this year,
- 9:05Speaker 1: but he's a guy that's been around a little bit.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Maybe you bring him in and talk to him, pick
- 9:09Speaker 1: his brain, you know, get some some different ideas. I
- 9:11Speaker 1: think that they've gone stale a little bit with their approach,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and I know that they tried to do things differently
- 9:17Speaker 1: on offense and maybe got a little too far outside
- 9:19Speaker 1: the box by asking defensive coaches and special teams coaches
- 9:22Speaker 1: to do it. But you know, I don't think it
- 9:24Speaker 1: was necessarily a bad idea to sort of switch things
- 9:27Speaker 1: up a little bit. You get some of these guys
- 9:29Speaker 1: in for interviews, maybe you get a new a new
- 9:31Speaker 1: system or a system that is more streamlined, and you
- 9:34Speaker 1: can sort of go in that direction. And I don't
- 9:36Speaker 1: think this means matt Patricia gets fired. I think he
- 9:38Speaker 1: just gets reassigned. Before he was asked to do this
- 9:41Speaker 1: last year, he was very involved in personnel and scouting
- 9:45Speaker 1: and new systems and platforms and hiring people down there.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So maybe he goes back to that and becomes, you know,
- 9:52Speaker 1: back to that football advisors. And I'm still looking at
- 9:54Speaker 1: the Sean mcvaytree too. I haven't given up that that
- 9:57Speaker 1: that one either. I think that's a good offense that
- 10:00Speaker 1: that's done very well with Jared Goff and with Matthew Stafford.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Obviously this year it fell apart when you're down to
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know, second third, fourth quarterbacks, so they had injuries
- 10:10Speaker 1: and that and once you lost Stafford, I mean that
- 10:12Speaker 1: was pretty much. That was pretty much it. But I
- 10:15Speaker 1: like that tree. Greg Olsen's a guy brought up on
- 10:17Speaker 1: Patriots Unfiltered on Thursday. I think Evan Lazarre talked about
- 10:22Speaker 1: Zach Robinson. I just liked the idea of if you
- 10:25Speaker 1: want to run something like what Kyle Shanahan does, get
- 10:28Speaker 1: a guy who's running the offense and have him come
- 10:31Speaker 1: in and implement it. Go back to the old way,
- 10:33Speaker 1: bring back a fullback. Let's go back to what worked.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I just want to tell people how to sign up
- 10:39Speaker 1: for these emergency podcasts. You can go to Patriots dot
- 10:42Speaker 1: com slash audio slash alert Patriots dot com slash audio
- 10:47Speaker 1: slash alert and you can sign up and once you
- 10:50Speaker 1: do that, you'll be notified whenever we post one of
- 10:53Speaker 1: these emergency podcasts. So I think we've said enough. Yeah,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and I would I would just say Freddie, Yeah. I
- 11:00Speaker 1: would guess we're going to have a sprinkling of these
- 11:03Speaker 1: because when we're going to get information about interviews, and
- 11:07Speaker 1: based on this release, I think we're gonna get releases
- 11:09Speaker 1: about interviews coming in the future. They'll sign, they'll they'll
- 11:12Speaker 1: hire someone in the future, and we're gonna be here
- 11:14Speaker 1: to make sure we talk. So again patriot dot com
- 11:16Speaker 1: slash audio slash Alert. We'll be back on Tuesday with
