- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome to the Return to Glory Podcast.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Return to Glory Podcast.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Good morning, Hunter's Arbniki Austin Roads, Tuesday, August twenty fifth.
- 0:36Speaker 4: We are creeping day by day closer to the start
- 0:40Speaker 4: of football season. Actually it is week zero season and
- 0:44Speaker 4: that live Lovely Ireland game here.
- 0:48Speaker 5: Saturday man any PTSD Ireland game review. Cole moved on
- 0:53Speaker 5: from from WEEKO.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I do now, thanks for bringing it up.
- 1:02Speaker 5: I didn't have it either until you said I chilled down.
- 1:06Speaker 4: My sin brings back where you were the day, the
- 1:10Speaker 4: moment that we kicked the offside kick.
- 1:12Speaker 5: And waking up bright and nearly cracking a guinness and
- 1:17Speaker 5: sitting on my couch and I was living in the
- 1:21Speaker 5: exurban area and ohme on on, wow.
- 1:25Speaker 3: The onside gud happened and you looked around.
- 1:27Speaker 5: You said, what was that? Yep, watching it. I'm pretty
- 1:31Speaker 5: sure by myself. I don't think anyone else was there,
- 1:33Speaker 5: and I just remember, just remember the hands on the head.
- 1:41Speaker 6: What a moment.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Well, yesterday we had a chance to listen to Troy
- 1:49Speaker 4: Dannon Talk Live, Austin. I believe you have some things
- 1:53Speaker 4: you want to say.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Gosh, I am so freaking sick and tired. Just I
- 2:01Speaker 5: get it. I'm sorry, Troy. Your Big Grid Rebuild website launched, like,
- 2:07Speaker 5: oh man, we need more money.
- 2:09Speaker 6: Nil. We're eight spending in the Big ten.
- 2:12Speaker 5: We only spent twenty three million dollars on nil last year.
- 2:17Speaker 5: I am so freaking sick and tired of this guy
- 2:19Speaker 5: asking for money. I get it, we brought him. He
- 2:23Speaker 5: wants to fundraise, but go like, I don't need to
- 2:26Speaker 5: hear about it. Like, I don't know who you think
- 2:30Speaker 5: you're talking to on these radio shows. Your deep pockets
- 2:34Speaker 5: that you're trying to shake. They already know you need money,
- 2:38Speaker 5: because you're already talking to them at every fundraiser you can.
- 2:42Speaker 5: You know what, if people donate to winning football programs,
- 2:46Speaker 5: win a freaking game, I.
- 2:47Speaker 6: Don't want to give you any money. If you're a
- 2:48Speaker 6: shitty program. You know who?
- 2:51Speaker 5: Didn't you know who two years ago was one of
- 2:53Speaker 5: the worst football programs. I had no freaking al money. Indiana,
- 2:57Speaker 5: I know, I get it. Indiana is this though gem
- 3:02Speaker 5: of what could be? You know how many? How many
- 3:06Speaker 5: millions of dollars. Think Mark Cuban donated to Indiana two
- 3:09Speaker 5: years ago. None you know how much money he gave
- 3:12Speaker 5: them last year game like enough money to break him
- 3:16Speaker 5: on the field during the Football Championship. Turns out, if
- 3:20Speaker 5: you win games, people want to give you money. And gosh,
- 3:23Speaker 5: if I had to listen to this guy be like,
- 3:25Speaker 5: we need this, we need we need we want to
- 3:26Speaker 5: be competitive, we need more money. It's like, dude, shut up,
- 3:32Speaker 5: I'm tired. Great, how much more money? Were like, don't
- 3:37Speaker 5: spend it on a freaking stadium? You built that looks
- 3:39Speaker 5: like shit, Like you just built this big, old freaking
- 3:43Speaker 5: training facility. Our sellout streak is over four hundred games.
- 3:48Speaker 5: What have you guys been doing with that money? Most
- 3:51Speaker 5: programs don't sell out games for four hundred games in
- 3:53Speaker 5: a row. We man, I was, I'm'm just like, goddamn,
- 4:00Speaker 5: I have to hear Troy dan and bitch about money
- 4:02Speaker 5: one more time. I'm sick of it. I don't want
- 4:05Speaker 5: to hear Troy Dana talk. He talks, I don't.
- 4:09Speaker 6: I'm done.
- 4:10Speaker 5: I don't want to Like if he comes every time
- 4:12Speaker 5: he comes on, he's like, we need more money. It's like, dude,
- 4:15Speaker 5: we get it. NIL sucks where he's in the big
- 4:17Speaker 5: ten or thirtieth nationally in NIL spending specifically.
- 4:24Speaker 3: So but good good, that was a good, good little rant.
- 4:28Speaker 6: I thought. I was so freaking pissed. I was so
- 4:31Speaker 6: pissed and.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I and I don't want to argue with you, but uh,
- 4:35Speaker 4: this is my take on it all. Generally speaking, money
- 4:42Speaker 4: can and helps you buy championships for sure, and and
- 4:47Speaker 4: so I will completely agree with that.
- 4:49Speaker 3: And part of Troy's job new job in the NIL
- 4:52Speaker 3: era is to do this.
- 4:54Speaker 4: And he definitely is trying that. But I from what
- 5:00Speaker 4: I'm hearing.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And I I think the.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Frustration from a lot of fans is the usage of
- 5:06Speaker 4: these funds that are coming in, which a lot of
- 5:08Speaker 4: them obviously are going to NIL. But are you know
- 5:11Speaker 4: from the stadium or whatever, like all this stuff is
- 5:15Speaker 4: nice and and but until you win games and prove
- 5:21Speaker 4: that it matters, it's it's just annoying. It's like a
- 5:24Speaker 4: little bug in your ear of like, hey, help me,
- 5:29Speaker 4: help me do this, and here give me a lot
- 5:32Speaker 4: of money to do this, and then you look at
- 5:33Speaker 4: it and you go, where's my money going?
- 5:36Speaker 5: Like we're people have been we've been giving them money
- 5:40Speaker 5: For freaking years. I haven't given them anything outside of tuition.
- 5:43Speaker 5: But you know I purchase tickets because I don't want
- 5:48Speaker 5: to donate because they suck.
- 5:50Speaker 6: You know, I get it. You're like, well, if you donate,
- 5:52Speaker 6: then they will suck. That's Texas A and M. How
- 5:54Speaker 6: that worked out?
- 5:55Speaker 5: How much money do they build out for the you
- 5:58Speaker 5: know Texas Tech? How much money do they use to
- 5:59Speaker 5: build their roster? Did they win anything last year? I
- 6:03Speaker 5: didn't think so. You know U c LA spends.
- 6:08Speaker 6: More money than us. How good they've been the last
- 6:11Speaker 6: couple of years. You know it doesn't it? Yes, it does,
- 6:15Speaker 6: you know relate, but how much money does? I can now?
- 6:19Speaker 5: The Indianas in the Iowa those are the two. Those
- 6:22Speaker 5: are the two teams we always bang our drum about.
- 6:24Speaker 5: I always spends money less money than us. They've been
- 6:27Speaker 5: freaking good forever. This you know, they spent five million
- 6:31Speaker 5: dollars less than us. And what kind of that shook
- 6:33Speaker 5: out for them? Like you can do it? And I'm
- 6:37Speaker 5: sorry that you you fucked up and you gave sorry.
- 6:42Speaker 5: I'm cussing a lot this morning, but boy, I was
- 6:45Speaker 5: freaking esteemed yesterday.
- 6:47Speaker 4: And I will say too, like what what demographic or
- 6:51Speaker 4: what style do we fit in?
- 6:52Speaker 3: We are we are the blue collar like earn earn.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Your way, you need more your Indiana's Iowa as your youth,
- 7:00Speaker 4: about your UCLA's your A and m's.
- 7:02Speaker 3: What do they have in common?
- 7:03Speaker 4: Well, they're they're in a very different market. Like our
- 7:06Speaker 4: identity if we go back to that word, is more
- 7:08Speaker 4: along the lines of, you know, the Midwest, tough nose,
- 7:12Speaker 4: earn it. The tricky part is that we still have
- 7:15Speaker 4: the ability because of who we are, to raise financial capital.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And and yeah, we're not top of.
- 7:23Speaker 4: The top, but we have that ability and so that
- 7:26Speaker 4: kind of it kind of pulls you away from the
- 7:29Speaker 4: identity of blue collar when you have the money. So
- 7:31Speaker 4: we're like in this weird between blue collar and white
- 7:34Speaker 4: collar type of demographic. And we've said that it makes
- 7:39Speaker 4: it tricky on how to manage.
- 7:41Speaker 3: So this is good.
- 7:45Speaker 4: This wasn't what we were going to talk about today,
- 7:47Speaker 4: but it's good to bring up and discuss because it is.
- 7:50Speaker 3: It's just where we're at in college football.
- 7:51Speaker 4: And I think it all still goes back to what
- 7:54Speaker 4: you said, Austin, like if we don't suck, it's a
- 7:56Speaker 4: very different view, but right now we suck.
- 7:59Speaker 3: So it's like what.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Comes first, the car before the horse or whatever that
- 8:05Speaker 4: analogy phrases like it's.
- 8:07Speaker 5: Cart cart car Traditionally cars don't call overs.
- 8:13Speaker 4: But you need you need money and what choy saying
- 8:17Speaker 4: you need money to be good? Well how about you'd
- 8:20Speaker 4: be good first and then we'll give you money like that,
- 8:23Speaker 4: that's kind of where.
- 8:24Speaker 6: There's definitely enough money.
- 8:25Speaker 5: There's enough money to be competitive, and we haven't really
- 8:29Speaker 5: even looked competitive, you know. And again, yes, money does help,
- 8:36Speaker 5: but it's this still doesn't get It feels like they're
- 8:39Speaker 5: saying we're gonna win a championship if you give money.
- 8:41Speaker 6: But that's just not the case.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Yeah, Oregon, Oregon in Texas, he's more than almost more
- 8:48Speaker 5: than double what we pay.
- 8:49Speaker 6: At least they haven't won a championship. I mean, but
- 8:52Speaker 6: it does help, But it does help.
- 8:55Speaker 5: I don't disagree, But can we do better than maybe
- 8:58Speaker 5: barely squeaking out?
- 9:00Speaker 6: He's seven and six seasons in a row. That'd be cool.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Hey, we're making Bowl games.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Now, I know, I know, and I've been the mostly
- 9:10Speaker 5: positive voice and it's like there's been some progress and
- 9:14Speaker 5: I'm sorry you goofed up and you paid Matt Rule
- 9:17Speaker 5: a shit ton of money and are tight ends coach
- 9:22Speaker 5: is making the most money of any tight ends coach
- 9:24Speaker 5: in the country. I almost guarantee it because messed up
- 9:28Speaker 5: there and we're getting all the we're paying all these
- 9:31Speaker 5: defensive coordinators who are no longer with the program.
- 9:36Speaker 4: That will be a big, big topic of conversation. I mean,
- 9:39Speaker 4: depending we'll see how this year goes. I mean, when
- 9:41Speaker 4: you're when you're evaluating coaches, your how you're spending your
- 9:46Speaker 4: money and where that money is going as a coach. Now,
- 9:48Speaker 4: obviously there's more pieces to that with a program and
- 9:51Speaker 4: a general manager and an ad now involved in some
- 9:54Speaker 4: of these decisions. But when you're a coach and you're
- 9:56Speaker 4: spending money on players and coaches that aren't paying out,
- 10:00Speaker 4: now you're that's part of your contract, that's part of
- 10:03Speaker 4: your job, and if you're messing that up, that is
- 10:06Speaker 4: going to heavily impact your decision to retain.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You at any major program.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Co all right, the topic next topic today that we're
- 10:17Speaker 4: going to discuss here is plays, the biggest, most impactful
- 10:24Speaker 4: plays in a football game.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And this is more general.
- 10:28Speaker 4: We have been in Nebraska on the negative side of this,
- 10:34Speaker 4: where it's hurt us and cost us games. But generally speaking,
- 10:39Speaker 4: you can hear coaches say, you know, every play matters,
- 10:41Speaker 4: no plays more important than the others, and then I
- 10:44Speaker 4: think that's very true. Right, So we're not really talking
- 10:47Speaker 4: about that. What we're talking about is in a close
- 10:50Speaker 4: football game, there's usually I don't know, ten to twelve
- 10:54Speaker 4: snaps that you can go back retrospectively and say those
- 10:57Speaker 4: plays are what changed the game, whether it be a turnover,
- 11:00Speaker 4: you know, a long forty five yard completion, a converted
- 11:04Speaker 4: third and eight, a fourth and one, a penalty that
- 11:06Speaker 4: happened in the red zone. Today, I want to, I guess,
- 11:09Speaker 4: talk about what those plays are, why they happen, and
- 11:13Speaker 4: then get your take on how can coaches and teams
- 11:19Speaker 4: actually prepare their players and teams to win these plays
- 11:23Speaker 4: that really come down to a game. So I guess
- 11:27Speaker 4: I want to ask you like you kind of agree
- 11:29Speaker 4: that I mean that ten to twelve number about right.
- 11:33Speaker 3: That's in mind, That's kind of what I came up with.
- 11:36Speaker 5: But yeah, that sounds about right, because I mean how
- 11:40Speaker 5: he snaps typically eighty snaps a game.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Is that roughly?
- 11:47Speaker 4: I think I read there's like one hundred and twenty
- 11:49Speaker 4: one hundred and forty snaps ish, like that's the general
- 11:52Speaker 4: take of.
- 11:52Speaker 3: What isn't the game.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I guess probably sixty on offense, sixty on defense. I
- 11:57Speaker 5: can I guess that makes sense. I think I'm just
- 11:59Speaker 5: doing honest. Yeah, no, that sounds about right. Yeah, a
- 12:06Speaker 5: little less than ten percent of your play is need
- 12:08Speaker 5: to have a big impact, and the rest of it
- 12:10Speaker 5: you just can't. Now, so you want to we're doing
- 12:15Speaker 5: this to the positive ones, not the impact, the negative impact,
- 12:19Speaker 5: just positive impact plays.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Is that what we're talking about.
- 12:21Speaker 3: No, it can be both.
- 12:22Speaker 4: It's it's anything that changes the way of the game.
- 12:26Speaker 4: And so like this, I mean, this is an example,
- 12:28Speaker 4: if not so much what these plays are. But I
- 12:31Speaker 4: just want to get into the there's not science behind it,
- 12:34Speaker 4: but the discussion behind these plays.
- 12:36Speaker 3: So I guess if you want to start.
- 12:40Speaker 4: With like turnovers, just in big explosive plays, you always
- 12:43Speaker 4: hear coaches go, we need to be explosive, we need
- 12:45Speaker 4: to you know, convert third down, fourth downs. And so
- 12:49Speaker 4: there's a.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Stat out there, there's a study that there was.
- 12:52Speaker 4: A I don't remember who did it, but I should
- 12:55Speaker 4: have wrote my source down, but there was when group
- 13:00Speaker 4: of five teams upset Power conference teams.
- 13:04Speaker 3: So there are.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Twenty two of these games, and so obviously these are
- 13:09Speaker 4: the games that they were big upsets. So they're big game,
- 13:12Speaker 4: you know, in the world of college football notable games,
- 13:16Speaker 4: the winning underdog team had a plus one point one
- 13:19Speaker 4: four average turnover margin. They converted fourth downs at seventy
- 13:23Speaker 4: two percent versus only forty percent. They had a seventy
- 13:27Speaker 4: percent red zone touchdown rate versus the favorite had a
- 13:32Speaker 4: fifty four percent. The third mediums underdogs had a fifty
- 13:37Speaker 4: one percent conversion rate versus thirty one percent. So like,
- 13:42Speaker 4: obviously these are the ones that there were upsets in,
- 13:45Speaker 4: but those kind of tell you some of those scenarios
- 13:49Speaker 4: and situations that I think are are are all on there.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Your big plays, if you want to call them. There
- 13:55Speaker 4: wasn't much data and stats around your first and ten
- 13:58Speaker 4: you get a four yard game, right, I mean, those
- 13:59Speaker 4: could be in the explosive.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Category, right, But these big.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Plays that impact the game, I think are our our key,
- 14:10Speaker 4: especially when you're when you're the underdog, and we will
- 14:13Speaker 4: be probably in several games this year.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Yeah, when I think of impact plays for the most part. Again,
- 14:21Speaker 5: maybe it's just because I started talking about Troy Daniel
- 14:23Speaker 5: any money and how we're just been in the in
- 14:26Speaker 5: the tank the last ten years. But I just think
- 14:30Speaker 5: of the back breaking like you know, we started with
- 14:33Speaker 5: with the Ireland the on side kick that did not
- 14:37Speaker 5: work out. And I think about against Iowa a couple
- 14:42Speaker 5: of years ago when we had the ball and we
- 14:44Speaker 5: were in field goal range and Dilarro fumbled it in
- 14:48Speaker 5: the red zone and Iowa had.
- 14:51Speaker 6: Like one big pass and they kicked the field goal
- 14:54Speaker 6: to win it.
- 14:56Speaker 5: You know, those are which turnovers in the red zone
- 15:00Speaker 5: gotta be up there.
- 15:01Speaker 6: It does have to.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Like I mean, like you said, as you're bringing them up,
- 15:09Speaker 4: we've been on the negative side of I mean an
- 15:13Speaker 4: unrealistic amount of negative big plays, which is again, why
- 15:19Speaker 4: how many times have you heard people say, well, if
- 15:21Speaker 4: you take out these five plays.
- 15:23Speaker 6: We've done it so many times, like we've heard.
- 15:26Speaker 3: That it's incredible.
- 15:29Speaker 5: You know.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I think back to that three and nine the best
- 15:31Speaker 4: three and nine team ever, like that was the name
- 15:35Speaker 4: of that season. And so that's what this conversation really is.
- 15:38Speaker 4: And and I think we we talk about like explosive plays,
- 15:45Speaker 4: what does that mean you know, and how does that happen?
- 15:50Speaker 4: So you know, sometimes I would say, you know, there's
- 15:52Speaker 4: luck involved on some of it, but like there's pressure
- 15:55Speaker 4: that comes into play, Like we always say Nebraska can't
- 15:58Speaker 4: play under pressure. It we can't handle the environment. But
- 16:03Speaker 4: there's also technique that comes in. For example, on a
- 16:06Speaker 4: sacking a quarterback, tackling a sacking a quarterback, there's technique two,
- 16:11Speaker 4: get a strip sack to make a big play on
- 16:14Speaker 4: there that that's part of technique that can end in
- 16:17Speaker 4: a big play. So I guess, well, there's a fine line.
- 16:21Speaker 4: But how much of what would you say is can
- 16:23Speaker 4: you actually prepare for this big play situation versus it's
- 16:29Speaker 4: just you know what happens and and.
- 16:32Speaker 3: And it's bad luck.
- 16:35Speaker 6: I think you can definitely prepare. I mean a lot
- 16:37Speaker 6: of when you're talking.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Like the explosive plays, this big plays downfield, those can
- 16:42Speaker 5: be repeated in practice enough, and you just have to
- 16:45Speaker 5: know when to bust them out. You know, it's like, oh,
- 16:49Speaker 5: they're defensive to this set. We've got our you know,
- 16:52Speaker 5: this group out like this is you know they're going
- 16:55Speaker 5: to catch this off guard or they're going to do
- 16:57Speaker 5: is play action run, play action, play action and then
- 17:00Speaker 5: we're just gonna hit up. You know, I definitely think
- 17:02Speaker 5: that they can be prepared practice rehearsed. Turnovers are a
- 17:06Speaker 5: little bit harder because that requires an error on the
- 17:11Speaker 5: offensive side of which I think is harder to force
- 17:15Speaker 5: than an error on the defensive side, just because there's
- 17:19Speaker 5: you have more control. You know, Yeah, you can practice
- 17:26Speaker 5: stripping them, but they're also practicing holding the ball, so
- 17:29Speaker 5: you know, it's that's one of those things where you
- 17:33Speaker 5: kind of balance each other out. But as far as
- 17:35Speaker 5: like big explosive plays, especially like special teams, last year
- 17:39Speaker 5: we saw just bringing in a new head coach or
- 17:41Speaker 5: a new special teams coach, what kind of impact that
- 17:44Speaker 5: can have on big impact on impact plays where you know,
- 17:48Speaker 5: Kenneth Williams, we were we were freaking taking the ball.
- 17:52Speaker 5: You know, it's like, oh, it turns out we give
- 17:54Speaker 5: ourselves more opportunities to do so we practice it this way,
- 17:57Speaker 5: you know, all all year, we're gonna we're gonna get
- 18:01Speaker 5: some return.
- 18:04Speaker 4: And and another big coach cliche that you hear all
- 18:08Speaker 4: the time, players have to make plays or I mean
- 18:10Speaker 4: not even coaches, fans. At some point your players gotta
- 18:14Speaker 4: go out and make plays.
- 18:15Speaker 3: So when when I hear.
- 18:16Speaker 6: That, like.
- 18:18Speaker 3: The question is how you?
- 18:21Speaker 4: And then so I think there's four things I guess
- 18:24Speaker 4: here in my mind. One A big piece is recruiting
- 18:28Speaker 4: and developing that talent, Like you have to have the
- 18:30Speaker 4: talent to go make plays. If you don't have players
- 18:34Speaker 4: that they're not gonna be able to make plays, they're
- 18:36Speaker 4: not capable of it because they're not good enough.
- 18:38Speaker 3: So, whether that's obviously.
- 18:39Speaker 4: In the recruiting or portal or developing them too, you
- 18:44Speaker 4: gotta rep the crap out of it and put them
- 18:46Speaker 4: in that situation whatever your big play situation is so
- 18:49Speaker 4: many times that.
- 18:52Speaker 3: On Saturday, it's not the first time you're gonna see it.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Three, don't give them seven or eight things to think
- 18:58Speaker 4: about and come out standpoint given one or two things.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Coaching wise, when you go out there, it's simple, here's
- 19:05Speaker 4: your job, here's your assignment. And then four, they need
- 19:10Speaker 4: to have confidence, and that goes back to a couple
- 19:12Speaker 4: of the other things. But you have to be able
- 19:14Speaker 4: to say when you go out there, you're not thinking
- 19:16Speaker 4: they know I've done this block, I've made this throw,
- 19:20Speaker 4: I've ran this route, I've kicked this ball.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:25Speaker 4: One hundred to one thousand times without thinking, and you're
- 19:28Speaker 4: not going out there and especially on road games and
- 19:31Speaker 4: letting the pressure get to you, and you can just
- 19:33Speaker 4: go out and then you can make a play and
- 19:34Speaker 4: who knows what happens. So like.
- 19:38Speaker 3: To me, those are some simple things.
- 19:40Speaker 4: And I know those are all coach speak, right, and
- 19:42Speaker 4: you think, well, every coach in the entire country is
- 19:45Speaker 4: doing this right, aren't they? Well maybe to an extent,
- 19:48Speaker 4: But how you go about doing that and your way
- 19:51Speaker 4: of doing those four things is very big, I think
- 19:54Speaker 4: and doing it and I think number one of the
- 19:56Speaker 4: most important thing is you got to have the players.
- 19:58Speaker 4: And at Nebraska we've I think said we've had the
- 20:02Speaker 4: players from a media standpoint, do we actually have the players?
- 20:05Speaker 3: I don't know, especially this year. Do we have who's
- 20:08Speaker 3: our players? This year?
- 20:10Speaker 4: You're gonna say Clamdrey is our quarterback? But you know,
- 20:13Speaker 4: is he in Is he a top five Big ten quarterback?
- 20:15Speaker 3: We hope?
- 20:15Speaker 5: So?
- 20:16Speaker 3: Is he.
- 20:19Speaker 6: A wide receiver? Room? Definitely?
- 20:23Speaker 5: And you know they're they're talking to the talk of
- 20:25Speaker 5: oh are running back room? We're good, these guys are
- 20:29Speaker 5: We're not going to miss a beat. But it's you know,
- 20:32Speaker 5: there's a difference between Emma Johnson, who's probably gonna get
- 20:36Speaker 5: some real reps in the NFL, and Asia have Moozie who's.
- 20:40Speaker 6: Probably not I had the guests right now in his career.
- 20:44Speaker 6: He's young. I could be.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Wrong, but but that's fine. Those guys it can still
- 20:50Speaker 5: work out for them in college.
- 20:51Speaker 6: You know, Yeah, I.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Totally agree with the players and putting them in a position,
- 21:03Speaker 5: and yeah, you have to a lot of that is
- 21:06Speaker 5: coaching them on the basics, not even on the explosivesness,
- 21:09Speaker 5: but it's like, hey, this way they don't have to
- 21:10Speaker 5: think about catching and tucking the ball like that's automatic.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Fundamentals.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Yeah, the fundamentals, they're not thinking about that.
- 21:18Speaker 5: They're just they're that part that gives them the opportunity
- 21:21Speaker 5: to think about how to take advantage of the situation.
- 21:27Speaker 6: And I'd say most teams.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Do have players who are capable of it because they're
- 21:31Speaker 5: just crazy. It's just you know, D one college athletes
- 21:35Speaker 5: are just crazy athletics. So it's just I think, I
- 21:38Speaker 5: honestly do you think it's a lot goes down to
- 21:39Speaker 5: coaching and the scheme. You know, there there are certain
- 21:44Speaker 5: offensive systems.
- 21:45Speaker 6: That just allow for.
- 21:48Speaker 5: You know, I think in the NFL, there's just some
- 21:50Speaker 5: offensive coordinators that the way that they scheme and the
- 21:54Speaker 5: amount of times the amount of shots that they take,
- 21:57Speaker 5: eventually that you do you'll break through. And it's like, okay,
- 22:01Speaker 5: so I guess, you know, is it more important to
- 22:03Speaker 5: keep taking the shots and then eventually breakthrough or this
- 22:06Speaker 5: consistent the io approach where you're just consistently crying until
- 22:10Speaker 5: the other team has the negative impact play.
- 22:14Speaker 6: I think those are kind of my mind how I
- 22:16Speaker 6: think about it.
- 22:17Speaker 5: Rarely are they both on the same team, because that
- 22:21Speaker 5: requires different game management.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Well, I'm glad you brought that up because it kind
- 22:28Speaker 4: of goes to my next point. Like the like you said,
- 22:30Speaker 4: the opposite side is the plays that lose games. So
- 22:34Speaker 4: we're you know, we were talking about how to create explosive,
- 22:37Speaker 4: game changing positive plays. The other side of it is
- 22:41Speaker 4: how to have enough discipline to not have turnovers catastrophic penalties.
- 22:48Speaker 3: You know, having a five yard fall start on first
- 22:51Speaker 3: and ten is not good, right, but but.
- 22:53Speaker 4: When you have a hold on a thirty five yard
- 22:56Speaker 4: run that's on the back side, that's catastrophic, or someone
- 22:59Speaker 4: drills somebody out of bounds after a third down stop
- 23:04Speaker 4: that's terrible. Throwing a pick in the end zone in
- 23:07Speaker 4: the turn, you know, it's horrible. So like the other
- 23:11Speaker 4: side of it is how do you coach without making
- 23:14Speaker 4: guys timid and giving them some freedom? That that's the
- 23:18Speaker 4: other side of it, because if you if you if
- 23:20Speaker 4: you are to play it safe right, then then you don't.
- 23:25Speaker 4: So this it actually goes down to what you what
- 23:27Speaker 4: you just said, You know, would you rather have an
- 23:30Speaker 4: aggressive team that you know occasionally crosses the line, is
- 23:33Speaker 4: gonna make some mistakes, but you know boom and bust
- 23:35Speaker 4: or a mistake free team that really has negative plays.
- 23:40Speaker 4: But like you know, your eye was, I guess what
- 23:42Speaker 4: what word do you lean on that scale? And where
- 23:44Speaker 4: do you think we are at?
- 23:46Speaker 6: That's what I was gonna say. I don't know where
- 23:48Speaker 6: we're at.
- 23:48Speaker 5: I think we're trying to do both and it doesn't
- 23:51Speaker 5: work because, like you know, they're not complimentary of each
- 23:56Speaker 5: other's approaches.
- 24:00Speaker 6: I think what I identity.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Identity, My preference is probably more the I'm fine with
- 24:09Speaker 5: the mistakes as long as our as long as we
- 24:11Speaker 5: have our booms and our breaks, you know, I'm fine
- 24:14Speaker 5: with that. Probably this is we haven't had the boos.
- 24:17Speaker 5: We just took the breaks. You know, it's like it's
- 24:19Speaker 5: gotta work. I'm totally fine like taking a ton of
- 24:23Speaker 5: shots and just just hammering defense of like, hey, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 5: we're gonna freaking do this until you guys give up
- 24:31Speaker 5: and it and it just has to work. Sometimes it
- 24:34Speaker 5: doesn't a lot of times it hasn't.
- 24:36Speaker 4: You know where I said, I I like Iowa, so
- 24:39Speaker 4: I want to be a mistake free team that just
- 24:41Speaker 4: grinds things out and wins it ugly. I have a
- 24:45Speaker 4: feeling where we're heading this year is we're moving towards
- 24:49Speaker 4: the boom and bust. I mean, that's what Anthony Calandery
- 24:52Speaker 4: is by definition of what we know of him.
- 24:55Speaker 5: And you're the I mean they've been saying on defense, hey,
- 24:59Speaker 5: we're gonna be fat violent, which that's.
- 25:01Speaker 6: What you do when.
- 25:01Speaker 4: You're and so you know, you're right, you.
- 25:07Speaker 3: The caveat to all that is is And I don't
- 25:10Speaker 3: even I don't.
- 25:11Speaker 4: I wouldn't say in the past that we've necessarily tried
- 25:14Speaker 4: to be an aggressive.
- 25:16Speaker 6: Team.
- 25:17Speaker 4: May I mean, maybe you can say we have, but
- 25:19Speaker 4: you're right that, like we've just had so many big
- 25:21Speaker 4: negative plays and it's gotten better but I think we
- 25:24Speaker 4: had to get over this like really horrible catastrophic mistakes
- 25:30Speaker 4: to get the mistake free.
- 25:31Speaker 3: And we've gotten a lot better at that.
- 25:34Speaker 4: But then there now, now we're at the point of
- 25:37Speaker 4: this journey that we're on of Okay, we've've eliminated a
- 25:41Speaker 4: lot of the negative stuff. You know, we're not hitting
- 25:43Speaker 4: guys out of bounds late anymore, We're not we're not
- 25:46Speaker 4: snapping balls over our heads on punts and kicks. Like
- 25:50Speaker 4: we've gotten rid of some of the catastrophic mistakes, but
- 25:52Speaker 4: we have zero explosivity.
- 25:54Speaker 3: We have zero playmakers.
- 25:57Speaker 4: And so now we're gonna kind of heeter and go
- 25:59Speaker 4: over that and say all right, let's let's let's have
- 26:02Speaker 4: some big boom plays.
- 26:04Speaker 3: My worry is.
- 26:06Speaker 4: That that's going to lead back now to more of the
- 26:08Speaker 4: negative place because we're going we're hopefully we didn't forget
- 26:12Speaker 4: about all the negatives.
- 26:13Speaker 3: I mean, you talk about turnovers. Turnovers have gotten.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Better, way better, way better.
- 26:18Speaker 4: But if you now, if you're if you're installing more
- 26:20Speaker 4: of this aggressive let's go make play system or this
- 26:23Speaker 4: turnovers is gonna jump back in. And as I was
- 26:26Speaker 4: talking to Jackson, He's like, well, yeah, but that's just
- 26:28Speaker 4: a natural course. I'm like, it is the natural course
- 26:31Speaker 4: of football. You're gonna have turnover, You're not gonna prevent
- 26:35Speaker 4: We can't be a top twenty team in the nation.
- 26:37Speaker 3: In turnovers again.
- 26:37Speaker 4: And that's what we were, and that's what I think
- 26:39Speaker 4: we've gotten away from, you know, by playing the.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Way we are. But now we don't have any explosivity.
- 26:45Speaker 3: So it is is just a fine line.
- 26:47Speaker 4: And that goes all the way back to our philosophy
- 26:50Speaker 4: and identity of what you said, who are we and
- 26:53Speaker 4: and what what does that?
- 26:55Speaker 3: What does that mean? We don't know?
- 26:58Speaker 4: Like and that's part of the problem. And so if
- 27:00Speaker 4: we're bouncing around again to trying something new to give
- 27:04Speaker 4: us hope, to give the fans and media hope, Like
- 27:06Speaker 4: where are we?
- 27:07Speaker 3: I don't know that? Like that's where we're heading I
- 27:09Speaker 3: think this year.
- 27:09Speaker 6: In my mind.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Maybe I'll be.
- 27:11Speaker 4: Completely wrong come two Saturdays from now, but that's where
- 27:14Speaker 4: I think we are.
- 27:16Speaker 6: We're like Mulan, you know, and she's looking in the
- 27:19Speaker 6: in the reflection, She's like, who you know, who am I?
- 27:23Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 27:24Speaker 6: Who who am I?
- 27:28Speaker 5: I'm I'm probably lying a little more with Jackson and
- 27:30Speaker 5: the statement of yeah, I understand that turnovers are going
- 27:34Speaker 5: to happen, but do agree.
- 27:37Speaker 6: We just can't.
- 27:40Speaker 5: I like to get calculated risk, and I'm fine with
- 27:43Speaker 5: the occasional risk failing, but you gotta win more than
- 27:47Speaker 5: you fail.
- 27:48Speaker 4: And and I'll go back in that same frame of mind.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Here's another one that I know is going to happen
- 27:55Speaker 4: because people want it, and we're gonna see it.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Is your jacout calculated risks.
- 28:01Speaker 4: Right, when's the best time to take a shot down
- 28:03Speaker 4: field and throw a vertical pass to one of our receivers. Right,
- 28:09Speaker 4: it's gonna happen sometime after we get a first down,
- 28:12Speaker 4: and then on first and ten we chuck one.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Deep and we get an incomplete pass.
- 28:15Speaker 4: And you are going to hear the mopes and groans
- 28:18Speaker 4: of everybody because that that obviously second and one is
- 28:23Speaker 4: probably the best time.
- 28:24Speaker 3: To do that.
- 28:25Speaker 6: Right.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Well, then if we do that and don't get a
- 28:27Speaker 4: first out, let's not go second in one. Let's even
- 28:29Speaker 4: go like second and two or two Right, that's the
- 28:34Speaker 4: one where you're like, okay, second and short, Well, we
- 28:37Speaker 4: take the shot on downfield.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Nope, now it's third and two.
- 28:40Speaker 4: We get a half of yard game, and now it's
- 28:43Speaker 4: fourth and two and we punt. And the thing is, well,
- 28:46Speaker 4: we would have just ran it twice on second on
- 28:48Speaker 4: second and two, we would.
- 28:49Speaker 3: Have gotten the first down.
- 28:50Speaker 4: Well that that that right there is your dilemma as
- 28:54Speaker 4: a coach and what you're what you're getting paid for,
- 28:56Speaker 4: and where your identity comes down. Are you a shot
- 28:59Speaker 4: team on second and two? Are you a play action
- 29:01Speaker 4: team on second and two? Or you believe in just run, run,
- 29:04Speaker 4: run like that? That is that's the give and take
- 29:07Speaker 4: that we're talking about here.
- 29:08Speaker 5: That it's like, you know we want you want the
- 29:11Speaker 5: mobile quarterback, but you know Calander is gonna take a
- 29:14Speaker 5: run out of the pocket and he's gonna get clocked
- 29:17Speaker 5: and he's gonna he's gonna fumble the ball in the
- 29:19Speaker 5: run because he's not he's not gonna be sure he's
- 29:21Speaker 5: gonna hold, he's not even sure he's gonna pass or run.
- 29:23Speaker 5: He's gonna kind of wish washing between it and he's
- 29:26Speaker 5: gonna take off and he's gonna he's gonna lose it.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Like that's just gonna happen. But it's like, well, if
- 29:30Speaker 5: you want a mobile quarterback, they tend to fumble the
- 29:33Speaker 5: ballimore because they're they're holding it more, you know, they're
- 29:36Speaker 5: they're moving with it. So yeah, yeah, they're totally right
- 29:41Speaker 5: that people. People just want they want every every play
- 29:45Speaker 5: to be positive.
- 29:46Speaker 6: They want.
- 29:48Speaker 4: And this is this is where this is where you're
- 29:51Speaker 4: differing opinions of identity from everybody in the state of
- 29:55Speaker 4: Nebraska and the nation on Nebraska fans have their own
- 29:59Speaker 4: vision in a picture of what they want because what
- 30:02Speaker 4: we've been trying to do has been this random, oscillating
- 30:08Speaker 4: scale of going this way, this way, this way several
- 30:11Speaker 4: years and none of it's really worked right since since
- 30:15Speaker 4: the nineties and early two thousands like that. Those those
- 30:19Speaker 4: were the but that's that's what's frustrating, is that's what
- 30:22Speaker 4: worked at one time. So then you have the fans
- 30:25Speaker 4: that say, well, then why don't we do that because
- 30:27Speaker 4: that actually work. Everything else we've tried hasn't. So you
- 30:29Speaker 4: have everybody and that's why as a coach, it's your
- 30:32Speaker 4: job then to come in and say this is what
- 30:34Speaker 4: I believe I want to do and this is going
- 30:37Speaker 4: to win us games.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Well, then you better win games.
- 30:39Speaker 4: With it, because if you don't win games, this conversation
- 30:42Speaker 4: just continues until the next coach, until the next coach,
- 30:45Speaker 4: and that's.
- 30:45Speaker 3: That's where we're at.
- 30:46Speaker 4: So like again, we've kind of jumped back into the
- 30:49Speaker 4: identity conversation. But part of this explosive, explosive plays, these
- 30:53Speaker 4: big plays, it is in that and I think we've
- 30:57Speaker 4: we've gotten better at not allowing the catastrophic negatives to
- 31:05Speaker 4: cost us games. But it's still happening. It still happens,
- 31:09Speaker 4: but we're we're kind of getting over that hump, which
- 31:11Speaker 4: is good. So now we're trying to turn the next page.
- 31:15Speaker 4: Let's hope it continues to be good. Otherwise we're going
- 31:17Speaker 4: to be right back to where we were three four
- 31:19Speaker 4: years ago and.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Asking the same questions that we have been for twenty years.
- 31:26Speaker 5: I think, yeah, I don't know, I don't know what
- 31:30Speaker 5: to think anymore, but you're right, we just well the
- 31:33Speaker 5: identity what you got. I'm interested to see said it's
- 31:39Speaker 5: another year with the new face, defensive coordinator. Interested to
- 31:41Speaker 5: see how that shakes out. I think I have an
- 31:44Speaker 5: idea of what our offensive identity wants to be with
- 31:47Speaker 5: the Calandria.
- 31:51Speaker 6: Pick up.
- 31:53Speaker 5: And kind of where we were with TJ LA Tive,
- 31:55Speaker 5: but I don't know how it all, how it all
- 31:57Speaker 5: marries out.
- 31:59Speaker 3: And and I guess you you hope that with Dana
- 32:02Speaker 3: and maybe some.
- 32:03Speaker 4: New coaches, right, Like, but Matt rules evaluation of talent
- 32:07Speaker 4: and players that he wants has not been great since he's.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Been in Nebraska.
- 32:13Speaker 4: So like, you know, you can make an assumptions as
- 32:16Speaker 4: to why or what we're doing with the players we
- 32:19Speaker 4: brought in. I think a lot of that obviously falls
- 32:22Speaker 4: on the head coach or will fall in the head coach,
- 32:24Speaker 4: But your assistants are a very big part of that.
- 32:27Speaker 4: And when that's changing, that's what can give you hope
- 32:29Speaker 4: and say, well, now we have the right assistance helping
- 32:32Speaker 4: him evaluate the right people, the right system to fit.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Into what you want to do.
- 32:36Speaker 6: So and you know his first like it.
- 32:41Speaker 5: This is the year where we should see some of
- 32:43Speaker 5: those guys that he's gotten and developed, right because the
- 32:46Speaker 5: first year it's like, well, he was out of the sport,
- 32:48Speaker 5: His recruiting class was a little more I'm going to
- 32:51Speaker 5: guess shoddy. But this should be the year that's like,
- 32:54Speaker 5: all right, you've had three this is what you've been telling.
- 32:56Speaker 6: Us, This is you this, these are your people, your
- 33:01Speaker 6: players that.
- 33:01Speaker 4: You wanted here yep, and and whatever you decided your
- 33:06Speaker 4: identity and philosophy was to fit that.
- 33:08Speaker 3: This is what you this is what you brought it.
- 33:09Speaker 4: So that's and that's what happens with every a lot
- 33:12Speaker 4: of coaches that year three four like that that that
- 33:14Speaker 4: that that everybody knows. You can make as many excuses
- 33:18Speaker 4: as you want, like you said and year one and two,
- 33:19Speaker 4: but you're three four. Nope, don't give me excuses about
- 33:23Speaker 4: the schedule. This is what you prepared for in the
- 33:26Speaker 4: big ten.
- 33:27Speaker 3: This is you. So go out and show us.
- 33:29Speaker 6: You can still go.
- 33:30Speaker 5: They said, going in four the years, that's great, Like,
- 33:35Speaker 5: that's fine. I think people would be thrilled to go
- 33:37Speaker 5: even four this year.
- 33:39Speaker 3: And it's not.
- 33:40Speaker 4: It's not unmanageable, but it's also it's also reasonable would
- 33:44Speaker 4: go four and eight like or five and eight.
- 33:47Speaker 6: And you just got it.
- 33:47Speaker 5: You have to be competitive in the big games that
- 33:49Speaker 5: you can't no more forty two to three in style
- 33:53Speaker 5: or whatever.
- 33:53Speaker 6: I don't remember what we did.
- 33:55Speaker 4: All right, Well, good time, Wacky Daki. Wednesday Tomorrow morning,
- 34:04Speaker 4: we'll go through some week zero plays or picks and
- 34:09Speaker 4: discuss more college football as a whole on on Thursday.
- 34:15Speaker 3: As we get closer to football season.
- 34:20Speaker 6: Go Bigger read GBR.
- 34:24Speaker 2: The headline chase, but the mission stays. The Memorial Stadium
- 34:28Speaker 2: to PBA Days, Ball Saturdays, basketball nights, every story chasing
- 34:33Speaker 2: red and white, recruiting bust, big time commits, camp battles,
- 34:38Speaker 2: coaching hits, transfer moves, and rising stars.
- 34:42Speaker 3: The roads and glories never fall. This is retire to
