- 1:54Speaker 4: in this edition of disguise coverage we will be diving
- 1:59Speaker 4: into the buffalo bills versus detroit lions week two matchup
- 2:03Speaker 4: what you need to know what will decide the game
- 2:07Speaker 4: insights schematic stuff structural stuff player stuff evaluation stuff.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I am exhausted.
- 2:14Speaker 4: It's been a long week. Got up early yesterday. Did
- 2:17Speaker 4: a film breakdown on Dion Walker and his standout performance
- 2:21Speaker 4: against the Houston Texans in week one. So if you're
- 2:23Speaker 4: looking for some film stuff and or some Dion Walker
- 2:27Speaker 4: stuff and or some Bills defense stuff, check out the
- 2:30Speaker 4: Disguise coverage playlist here on YouTube or whatever.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Actually, yeah, just on YouTube because it's film breakdown. So
- 2:35Speaker 1: I only uploaded it there. So got a lot of
- 2:37Speaker 1: technical breakdown stuff there.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Scheme, structure, play style, what his role is, where he's fitting,
- 2:44Speaker 4: where he is in his career and in his development,
- 2:46Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Got up early to do that. Been working.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I was like, I don't know if I'm going to
- 2:50Speaker 4: do a Tuesday show. I've been thinking about that since
- 2:52Speaker 4: last week. But then I got a text from my boy.
- 2:56Speaker 4: who's always here anytime we do Bills vs. Lions, and
- 2:59Speaker 4: who's here a fair amount during the draft offseason as well.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Someone tweeted at us yesterday and was like, hey, are
- 3:04Speaker 4: you and so-and-so getting together to do Bills vs.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Lions?
- 3:06Speaker 4: And I sent that to him, and I was like,
- 3:08Speaker 4: more confirmation that we have to do this. So without
- 3:11Speaker 4: further ado, with that being said, I welcome to the
- 3:14Speaker 4: show for the umpteenth time Mr.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Russell Brown.
- 3:19Speaker 4: I don't think anyone knows the Detroit Lions better than you.
- 3:22Speaker 4: I don't think anyone else could be a better tag
- 3:26Speaker 4: team partner. to me than you uh one of my
- 3:29Speaker 4: favorite people in this space we're good friends in real
- 3:32Speaker 4: life i appreciate you thank you for the time welcome
- 3:35Speaker 4: to the.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Show thanks for having me i hope i'm not uh
- 3:39Speaker 3: too choppy or anything like that i hope everything's good
- 3:41Speaker 3: um audio and video wise sorry to everybody waiting in
- 3:44Speaker 3: the chat there uh always a little delay with me
- 3:47Speaker 3: and anthony because we're chopping it up we were talking.
- 3:49Speaker 4: We got talking offline that's a we've been in here
- 3:52Speaker 4: since like We were in here a couple minutes already
- 3:54Speaker 4: before 8, and then before I knew it, I blinked it.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I was like, uh-oh, it's 9.06. We got to go.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. So my fault, folks. But no, happy to
- 4:00Speaker 2: be here.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Really excited that both of our teams are 1-0. As
- 4:05Speaker 3: everybody kind of knows through my story here with Cover 1,
- 4:08Speaker 3: Bills are kind of my backup team. Back when I
- 4:12Speaker 3: started with Cover 1 in 2017, Lions were not as
- 4:16Speaker 3: good as they are now, so I always got a
- 4:18Speaker 3: soft spot for the Bills. But the fact that our
- 4:20Speaker 3: teams are matching up, The fan bases are very similar.
- 4:23Speaker 3: New stadium, new turf. Really looking forward to this game
- 4:27Speaker 3: on Thursday. I'll be in the bubble a little bit
- 4:29Speaker 3: because I coach varsity and JV football, so I'll be
- 4:32Speaker 3: out coaching, playing catch-up and all that stuff. Look, I'm
- 4:36Speaker 3: looking forward to the JV game, but I'm not looking
- 4:38Speaker 3: forward to being in the bubble at all.
- 4:41Speaker 2: But really excited to break this down. So thanks for
- 4:43Speaker 2: having me as always, brother.
- 4:44Speaker 1: No, of course. I was already, I was like, I
- 4:48Speaker 1: got a message for us. I kept like.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Slacking on it and slacking on it. And then you
- 4:52Speaker 1: texted me and I was like, Oh, there we go. That's, uh,
- 4:55Speaker 1: that's the inside right there.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 1: We've been doing this.
- 4:57Speaker 4: You know, it's funny now because the bills, bills and
- 5:00Speaker 4: lines have connected, uh, you know, several times over the
- 5:03Speaker 4: past couple of years. Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You know, it's funny thing.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I remember thinking back to the, I think the first
- 5:09Speaker 4: time we did bills, lions, the Thanksgiving game where Von
- 5:14Speaker 4: Miller tours, ACL and the lions gave that, that like the,
- 5:18Speaker 4: the lions weren't the lions yet. And I remember going
- 5:21Speaker 4: into that game, and it was like, man, you know, like,
- 5:23Speaker 4: Olympe McNeil's pretty sweet. Like, Amon Ross St. Brown is
- 5:26Speaker 4: pretty sweet. And the Lions are kind of, like, doing
- 5:28Speaker 4: some things. And I remember on that show, like, people
- 5:30Speaker 4: were like, the Lions suck. And we were like, no, like,
- 5:32Speaker 4: you were keyed into them even more. But I was like, no, like,
- 5:36Speaker 4: the Lions kind of have something. Like, this game might
- 5:38Speaker 4: be tough.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And it was tough.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Like, it kind of went down to the wire in
- 5:41Speaker 4: that game and took some heroics from Allen and Stephon
- 5:44Speaker 4: Diggs to pull that win out. And then, yeah, lo
- 5:46Speaker 4: and behold, I mean, you– We're tortured fans of these
- 5:53Speaker 4: two teams.
- 5:54Speaker 2: That's probably why we get along so well.
- 5:56Speaker 1: A thousand percent, yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 4: We know what pain is like when it comes to
- 5:59Speaker 4: football in a multitude of ways. But despite the Bills'
- 6:04Speaker 4: sustained success or continued success over the past several years,
- 6:08Speaker 4: funnily enough, I would say, not to make things painful,
- 6:12Speaker 4: the Lions have probably had the higher high for me
- 6:15Speaker 4: of each two teams' recent successes, like being up I mean,
- 6:19Speaker 4: it correlates, it corresponds to a really rough fall. But
- 6:23Speaker 4: being up, what, it was 21-0 in that NFC Championship
- 6:26Speaker 4: against the.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Niners, right? You're looking like, yo, we're going to do something.
- 6:30Speaker 4: The Bills have reached the AFC Championship, but they didn't
- 6:32Speaker 4: have that strong of a high in the AFC Championship.
- 6:37Speaker 1: But as is... 24-7 at half. 24-7 at half.
- 6:42Speaker 4: That stupid, ridiculous, but Brandon and I, you catch downfield
- 6:47Speaker 4: like all the nonsense.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I was in mobile. I was going to say, yes,
- 6:50Speaker 2: because I saw you the next day. I was with
- 6:53Speaker 2: Nick Faber, man. We were down there.
- 6:55Speaker 3: We were watching the game together. He got us kicked
- 6:58Speaker 3: out of a bar. That was a whole thing. I
- 7:01Speaker 3: called my dad at half. I was like, Dad, we're
- 7:03Speaker 3: doing it. We're going to the Super Bowl.
- 7:05Speaker 1: No, you didn't.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Called the kid, called the wife, everything, and.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Oh, why would you do that?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I mean, I am superstitious, but I didn't say... I
- 7:16Speaker 3: didn't say it. I'm saying my dad said it and
- 7:19Speaker 3: all that stuff. And I was just like, yeah, yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, whatever, yeah. Yeah, but it's... I mean, it
- 7:24Speaker 2: is what it is.
- 7:25Speaker 3: They've gotten close enough where if it never were to happen,
- 7:30Speaker 3: I'm like, close enough, I guess.
- 7:32Speaker 2: But no, I think.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I think that this is a really interesting matchup with
- 7:36Speaker 3: two teams that we could very well both see play
- 7:39Speaker 3: each other at the end of the year. I mean,
- 7:41Speaker 3: it could very well be the case. I think there's
- 7:44Speaker 3: enough talent on both sides. Obviously, I think there's some
- 7:47Speaker 3: flaws across the board for both teams where they've got
- 7:50Speaker 3: some things that maybe they've got to clean up. But
- 7:53Speaker 3: I don't think there's a talent issue, and I don't
- 7:55Speaker 3: think there's a huge talent gap between these two teams.
- 7:58Speaker 3: I know it's a four and a half point spread
- 7:59Speaker 3: for the betting folks out there in favor of the Bills,
- 8:02Speaker 3: mainly because they're home.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Of course you're leaving with the spread.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Of course, of course. I don't know the total.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean, I'm looking forward to it. It's
- 8:12Speaker 3: going to be a heavyweight fight. I just hope the
- 8:14Speaker 3: Lions don't come out flat or anything like that. I
- 8:18Speaker 3: really hope that they come out and compete. And I
- 8:19Speaker 3: think they will. I mean, this is a Dan Campbell team.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And normally when they're the underdog, they tend to play
- 8:24Speaker 3: a little bit better. So we'll see what happens.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Very fair point. Very fair point.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 1: You know what?
- 8:28Speaker 4: And I, I would say, I remember, yeah, I remember we,
- 8:32Speaker 4: we got in on Monday. We went to the bar,
- 8:35Speaker 4: got some food and it was just really just talking
- 8:37Speaker 4: to you in favor about how sad everything was the
- 8:39Speaker 4: day before and just being like, bro. And then we
- 8:41Speaker 4: got into senior bowl mode and prospect mode. And yeah,
- 8:44Speaker 4: it's been, uh, I couldn't even get in the, in
- 8:46Speaker 4: the zone.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I was checked out.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I was, I know.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I remember you just being like, dude, like you were
- 8:51Speaker 4: just that Monday. And like, I think through the first
- 8:53Speaker 4: half of Tuesday, you were just like, Man, like you
- 8:56Speaker 4: were just.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like Joey and friends just staring out, looking
- 9:00Speaker 3: out the rainy window glass.
- 9:01Speaker 1: You were just like, man. Yeah, you and Faber were
- 9:03Speaker 1: both like, it was shell shocking.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I even remember too, I was going, I ran to
- 9:07Speaker 4: the store because I needed like random things for mobile.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And I remember I paused the games. I was only
- 9:11Speaker 1: gonna be gone like 20 minutes.
- 9:13Speaker 4: And I accidentally like looked at my phone and like
- 9:16Speaker 4: in the blink of an eye, I saw the score.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And I was like, I think, you know, I left,
- 9:19Speaker 4: it was right at the beginning because I looked at
- 9:21Speaker 4: my phone and I saw, well, I think it was
- 9:23Speaker 4: like the Jameson Williams reverse for the touchdown.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Like that. And I was like, Oh, and then they
- 9:27Speaker 1: scored again. And I was like, Whoa. And I was like,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I have to get back. Like I have to let it.
- 9:31Speaker 4: So like I randomly grabbed some things from target or
- 9:33Speaker 4: wherever I was and like ran back.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And I was like, dude, this is going to be
- 9:36Speaker 1: so stoked. And then, Oh man, if they.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Would have made it, I think they would have won
- 9:39Speaker 3: the whole thing. I genuinely believe that they were so
- 9:42Speaker 3: good that year.
- 9:43Speaker 2: They were even better the year after. And they just
- 9:45Speaker 2: didn't have an answer for Jane Daniels. He balled out.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Now. I remember that being like a big shock. I
- 9:50Speaker 4: was like, well, there's no way. And then Washington went
- 9:52Speaker 4: and then got housed by frigging Philly.
- 9:54Speaker 3: And, Yeah, and that's what worries me about this game
- 9:56Speaker 3: is just Josh Allen played, I think, really well in
- 9:58Speaker 3: week one.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And i'm i'm i'm.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Worried he's gonna play even better uh on thursday night
- 10:05Speaker 3: especially at home you know he's gonna be amped up
- 10:07Speaker 3: you know he's gonna be yeah i.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Mean that's fair uh i'm gonna use that as a
- 10:12Speaker 4: transition to get into the meat of this episode of
- 10:14Speaker 4: what uh the folks need to know for bill's first
- 10:16Speaker 4: lines and week two we're gonna do a little something
- 10:17Speaker 4: different On this episode, I have committed to Russ to
- 10:22Speaker 4: get him out in 30 to 45 minutes.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So Russ is going to give.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Us insightful points into things from the Detroit Lions side
- 10:31Speaker 4: of things, what we need to know, what folks of
- 10:36Speaker 4: each fan base need to know, people watching this game.
- 10:39Speaker 4: I am going to tie into some of those points
- 10:41Speaker 4: with insightful things from myself. But I'm saying Russ kind
- 10:45Speaker 4: of like setting the stage here The Lions defense banged up.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Bills offense kind of humming. Bills defense underperforming in several
- 10:55Speaker 4: ways in week one. The Lions offense is a juggernaut
- 10:59Speaker 4: in and of themselves with, I think, a formula that
- 11:02Speaker 4: could really give the Bills defense some trouble. I said
- 11:04Speaker 4: it in the offseason, like, you know, week one against
- 11:07Speaker 4: the Texans offense, we would see what they were going
- 11:09Speaker 4: to be. Their revamped offensive line, the poor run game
- 11:12Speaker 4: from last year.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Would it be better?
- 11:14Speaker 4: They look pretty good, but did they look actually good,
- 11:16Speaker 4: or is it because the Bills' defense is still working
- 11:18Speaker 4: through some things? I've said all offseason, the real test
- 11:20Speaker 4: for the defense, no matter what happened in week one,
- 11:23Speaker 4: would be on a short week against the Detroit Lions
- 11:26Speaker 4: with a very good offense, a good offensive line, a
- 11:29Speaker 4: strong run game.
- 11:30Speaker 1: You want to see what's up with the Bills' run defense?
- 11:33Speaker 4: Get to Thursday night, see how you stack up against Detroit,
- 11:36Speaker 4: let alone everything.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Else they got.
- 11:38Speaker 4: That's kind of where my head goes to. I think
- 11:40Speaker 4: the Bills can put up some points with the injuries
- 11:42Speaker 4: to the Lions' defense. And then I also think the
- 11:44Speaker 4: Lions could do.
- 11:44Speaker 1: The same thing.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Is that kind of where your head is at, where
- 11:47Speaker 4: you want to lead? But either way, the floor is yours.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Tell us what you got.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I mean, I think it's going to be a lot
- 11:55Speaker 3: of back and forth. The one thing I worry about
- 11:58Speaker 3: just from an execution standpoint, I know how the Bills
- 12:02Speaker 3: defense is going to operate with bringing some pressure and
- 12:05Speaker 3: giving them different looks. I think that they could be
- 12:08Speaker 3: obviously a little bit aggressive, especially if Blake Miller or
- 12:12Speaker 3: doesn't play. He's got a knee injury right now. He
- 12:15Speaker 3: played through getting rolled up on what looked to be
- 12:18Speaker 3: initially an ankle injury, and maybe it still is an ankle,
- 12:22Speaker 3: but it's being listed as a knee injury right now.
- 12:25Speaker 3: So he didn't practice Monday. He didn't practice yesterday or
- 12:28Speaker 3: today either. So we'll kind of see. They might not
- 12:32Speaker 3: have their starting right tackle, but he's a tough guy.
- 12:35Speaker 2: They might feel confident enough.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Like if he can get a limited day in tomorrow,
- 12:39Speaker 3: then If he if he limit day tomorrow, then I'll
- 12:41Speaker 3: feel a little bit better about going into Thursday. But,
- 12:44Speaker 3: you know, with the Bills defense and how, you know,
- 12:47Speaker 3: Dion Walker is looking, I do wonder, is that going
- 12:50Speaker 3: to be a tough matchup for Juice Scruggs, who I
- 12:53Speaker 3: thought week one.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Looked really well.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I don't have his PFF grades or anything like that
- 12:57Speaker 3: up in front of me, but I know his his
- 12:59Speaker 3: numbers were really good across the board. But just from
- 13:01Speaker 3: watching the film. He played with great base, low pad
- 13:05Speaker 3: level consistently. I thought that was a big issue in Houston.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Maybe that was because they were a lot of zone.
- 13:11Speaker 3: And for the Lions, primarily they were 40% outside zone
- 13:15Speaker 3: in week one. They were only about 5% inside zone.
- 13:20Speaker 3: A lot of what they did was duo, man, and
- 13:25Speaker 3: gap scheme. For gap scheme, they were about 15% in
- 13:28Speaker 3: week one. Um, so I'll be, I'll be intrigued if
- 13:32Speaker 3: that goes up a little bit because there were times
- 13:34Speaker 3: on film watching the lions offense that they had, uh,
- 13:38Speaker 3: some really interesting angles in the run game where I
- 13:41Speaker 3: think if they would have been able to have maybe
- 13:43Speaker 3: clear communication, uh, for example, very first drive of the game,
- 13:47Speaker 3: they're faced with a third in one, they've got the numbers. Um, and,
- 13:51Speaker 3: and it looks like they're running some type of zone variation. Maybe,
- 13:54Speaker 3: maybe it's stretch, but it probably some type of outside
- 13:57Speaker 3: zone and they're inserting, um, they motion a tight end
- 14:01Speaker 3: across and they insert him to the, to the, to
- 14:04Speaker 3: the defensive end.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And then they've got another tight end.
- 14:07Speaker 3: So they're running 12 personnel, but the tight ends in
- 14:09Speaker 3: the backfield as a fullback and he inserts for the safety.
- 14:13Speaker 3: But they get a double team with Panay Sewell and
- 14:15Speaker 3: Chris Mahogany and Mahogany doesn't come off to the Mike
- 14:18Speaker 3: backer because he over commits on his angle to, to
- 14:23Speaker 3: the outside shade, the three tech defenders. So, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 3: it's one of those things where if they can, you know,
- 14:29Speaker 3: if they can fix some of those things and long
- 14:31Speaker 3: story short, Gibbs gets tackled for loss third in one.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Those are things that you can't have happen.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And that's one thing for me, like if, if you
- 14:39Speaker 3: are going into this game, third in one third and
- 14:42Speaker 3: manageable second and manageable, you got to get those down
- 14:45Speaker 3: at distances.
- 14:46Speaker 2: That's, that's what made the lions so good.
- 14:50Speaker 3: When we talk about 2023 and 2024 and those teams,
- 14:54Speaker 3: They could always hit on second down and manageable. They
- 14:56Speaker 3: got in very manageable situations. So I would love to
- 15:00Speaker 3: see that here in this game, especially with a short turnaround.
- 15:04Speaker 3: How does this script look? And what angles are you
- 15:07Speaker 3: taking to open up the run game? Because from a
- 15:10Speaker 3: yards per carry standpoint or from a yards per contact standpoint,
- 15:14Speaker 3: nobody outside of San Francisco is getting more yards per
- 15:19Speaker 3: contact other than the Lions. So San Francisco is getting
- 15:21Speaker 3: about 2.8 yards per um, per carry before contact and, and,
- 15:27Speaker 3: and for the lions.
- 15:27Speaker 2: It's 2.55. So, um, that's good. Hope, hope, hopefully that.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Continues and they can keep the ground game going. But
- 15:35Speaker 3: the other thing too, Jameer Gibbs had 29 carries in
- 15:37Speaker 3: that game. Again, short week, 34 total touches. How's he
- 15:40Speaker 3: going to feel? Jacob sailors did not play any offense
- 15:44Speaker 3: in Sion. Vaki doesn't know, his left foot from his
- 15:47Speaker 3: right foot.
- 15:48Speaker 2: So get him out of here. Give us sailors.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Maybe they called Jabari small up, but he was dealing
- 15:52Speaker 3: with a concussion. So we'll kind of see, I know
- 15:54Speaker 3: I'm kind of all over the place, uh, what, what
- 15:57Speaker 3: I want to look for. Um, but you know, specifically
- 15:59Speaker 3: for me, how did the, how did the Lions offense, um,
- 16:02Speaker 3: specifically offensive line, how do they answer to the fronts
- 16:05Speaker 3: and the looks that the bills defense are going to
- 16:06Speaker 3: give us?
- 16:07Speaker 2: Because I know, uh, the bills are going to switch
- 16:09Speaker 2: things up, uh, whenever they can.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 16:12Speaker 4: The bill's got, Gibbs is running mate for years and
- 16:15Speaker 4: week one with David Montgomery. And now they get Gibbs himself.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Yeah. You that that's where the whole matchup starts for me.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Really like that, that aspect I, and maybe it's just
- 16:28Speaker 4: cause I'm, I'm such a defensive guy and I'm a
- 16:30Speaker 4: Jim Leonard guy, but I have so many worries.
- 16:32Speaker 1: About the run deep of run defense is just seeing.
- 16:35Speaker 4: And as soon as you said like duo, like that's,
- 16:37Speaker 4: that's the first thing for me, I'm thinking of two things.
- 16:40Speaker 4: I'm thinking of duo and, and then all the gap
- 16:43Speaker 4: scheme stuff that you can run. Like I saw, I
- 16:45Speaker 4: watched a little bit of lion saints. Um, at this point,
- 16:50Speaker 4: I'm going to finish it up tomorrow, but they ran like,
- 16:53Speaker 4: as they have before, like they ran a really clean
- 16:55Speaker 4: rep of, of crunch trap and wham, which I've seen
- 16:58Speaker 4: them do before. And it just hits so perfect. And like,
- 17:00Speaker 4: I'm just running all the gap scheme stuff I can
- 17:02Speaker 4: against the bills. Like, and I know duo technically falls
- 17:04Speaker 4: into that.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I'm running that.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Like I, and I'm going to do this if I'm
- 17:08Speaker 4: every team, but especially a Dan Campbell team, that is
- 17:13Speaker 4: a team that has jameer gibbs that just needs a
- 17:16Speaker 4: little daylight and it has a physical line up front
- 17:19Speaker 4: like again we'll see what happens with miller but i'm
- 17:22Speaker 4: running duo at ed oliver and landon jackson and whoever
- 17:26Speaker 4: else if they're if they're in like their base if
- 17:28Speaker 4: they're in an odd front cool whoever are those four
- 17:31Speaker 4: eyes i'm putting you to work like i am running
- 17:33Speaker 4: at you over and over and over and even if
- 17:36Speaker 4: we're gonna get okay cool like let's go 11 11 Cool.
- 17:40Speaker 4: We can still have Amon Ra insert.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Tesla can do some stuff.
- 17:45Speaker 4: More than willing blockers in that regard. Let's see if
- 17:48Speaker 4: the bills match nickel and then we'll run duo that way.
- 17:50Speaker 4: And then if we're going to run duo that way, cool.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Good luck to whoever.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Your three tech is that you're putting to that strong
- 17:56Speaker 4: side if they choose to go with that kind of front.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I am mashing the bills left and right. I'm running duo.
- 18:03Speaker 4: I'm running any gap scheme that we can, whether it's
- 18:05Speaker 4: pin and pull stuff, single back power, traditional power if
- 18:09Speaker 4: we want to go counter. whatever, if it's crunch, especially with,
- 18:14Speaker 4: with how much Dion Walker wants to penetrate and at
- 18:17Speaker 4: Oliver wants to penetrate, give me crunch, give me trap,
- 18:21Speaker 4: give me wham, like whatever, give me anything. That's like,
- 18:25Speaker 4: if I'm Dion Walker at Oliver, like, Oh, I'm free.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Oh, bang.
- 18:28Speaker 4: And I'm getting a year hold. And then there goes
- 18:30Speaker 4: Gibbs through. And I think also the, the yards before
- 18:33Speaker 4: contact is great.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I love that poll.
- 18:36Speaker 4: And then the bills last year, one of the worst
- 18:39Speaker 4: yards after contact per rush team week one was a
- 18:42Speaker 4: little wonky form as well. And now you're dealing again
- 18:44Speaker 4: with a, with a quick hitting back like Gibbs who
- 18:46Speaker 4: could change your angles in a heartbeat, but it was
- 18:48Speaker 4: also strong, has some contact balance. Your form has to
- 18:51Speaker 4: be perfect. You have to get population of the football
- 18:54Speaker 4: to be able to bring him down. That's where the
- 18:56Speaker 4: game starts for me, like the run game, just in
- 18:58Speaker 4: and of itself, because you're getting pushed around and run
- 19:00Speaker 4: around or run on.
- 19:01Speaker 1: That's a problem.
- 19:02Speaker 4: And then the lions have been, going back to Ben
- 19:06Speaker 4: Johnson's time and even these, the, you know, this year
- 19:09Speaker 4: so far and last year without him, they have been
- 19:11Speaker 4: what I've wanted the bills to go to more, which
- 19:13Speaker 4: was under center play action, like golf and the linesmen
- 19:16Speaker 4: doing that for years, like five, five step drop, seven
- 19:19Speaker 4: step drop, hit hitch rhythm, bang. I'm on rock, bang, JMO,
- 19:23Speaker 4: bang Laporta. Like, and the more the run game gets going,
- 19:27Speaker 4: the more that gets going. And then the bills want
- 19:30Speaker 4: to play these single high coverages. Everything starts to kind
- 19:33Speaker 4: of snowball. So for me, it starts with the run.
- 19:35Speaker 4: How healthy are the Lions up front? If they are healthy,
- 19:38Speaker 4: it presents for me the best test of the early
- 19:41Speaker 4: part of the year from a run game standpoint.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:45Speaker 1: And that's what we want to know.
- 19:47Speaker 4: And I mean, again, like that, even if like, they're
- 19:49Speaker 4: not healthy upfront, you know, the lions under Dan Campbell,
- 19:52Speaker 4: they've taken on his identity. They just, they're going to
- 19:54Speaker 4: try and beat the hell out of you. And it's
- 19:55Speaker 4: a really great matchup. And for a bills defense, that's
- 19:58Speaker 4: so movement based and isn't point of attack, you know,
- 20:02Speaker 4: hold at the point of attack based. That's why I'm like,
- 20:04Speaker 4: just if I'm the lines, I'm just going to run
- 20:06Speaker 4: at them and see if.
- 20:06Speaker 1: They can match it.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Yeah, and the other thing too, like reviewing the tape,
- 20:11Speaker 3: I've watched it, you know, two or three times through now,
- 20:13Speaker 3: obviously watching the game live, like reviewing everything, Drew Petzing
- 20:18Speaker 3: re-watching some stuff from the Cardinals in the off season
- 20:21Speaker 3: and things like that from his past.
- 20:23Speaker 2: There was a lot of pin and pull from what
- 20:24Speaker 2: he was doing previously.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Dude, Arizona going into, oh, I think 2024, the Bills
- 20:31Speaker 4: opening up against the Cardinals. So I think so probably
- 20:35Speaker 4: this 2023 season, one of those in those range. And
- 20:36Speaker 4: I remember watching so much Cardinals tape Their pin and
- 20:39Speaker 4: pull game was great. And then they open up against
- 20:41Speaker 4: the Bills. They're running pin and pulling, killing the Bills.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Conner's getting to the edge, left, right, and center. And
- 20:47Speaker 4: they were just like, that was, I completely spaced on
- 20:50Speaker 4: Petzig being there. Like their pin, his pin and pull.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Game, his gap stuff.
- 20:54Speaker 4: He was leaning into 12 and 13 personnel before it
- 20:57Speaker 4: was cool. And he was doing it with Conner in
- 20:59Speaker 4: the backfield. Like I'm leaning into more of that Arizona
- 21:01Speaker 4: playbook if I'm him and doing that all day.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and that was something that he didn't really show
- 21:06Speaker 3: in week one. And he was also the second most
- 21:09Speaker 3: under center in the NFL in week one for any
- 21:13Speaker 3: team at 75%. So, like, I wonder, is this something
- 21:19Speaker 3: to just maybe show a tendency of, hey, we're not
- 21:22Speaker 3: going to show them our run game out of the gun?
- 21:24Speaker 3: We're not going to, like, is this a think-ahead spot where, like, maybe,
- 21:27Speaker 3: I don't want to say they looked past the Saints.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I know they didn't do that.
- 21:31Speaker 3: But is it one of those things where like, hey,
- 21:33Speaker 3: I'm going to stick to my script here. I'm not
- 21:35Speaker 3: going to make any adjustments into our pin and pull.
- 21:37Speaker 3: We're not going to get away from being under center.
- 21:40Speaker 3: And they also were doing a lot of stuff with
- 21:41Speaker 3: like moving tight ends and kind of they kind of
- 21:45Speaker 3: put themselves in some really interesting spots. Like the Sam
- 21:48Speaker 3: linebacker would be off the line of scrimmage to the
- 21:50Speaker 3: two tight end side. And then they wouldn't, which is
- 21:52Speaker 3: kind of odd. The Saints, that would be. Then the
- 21:55Speaker 3: Lions would motion the tight end across away from that,
- 21:58Speaker 3: that backer, and then that backer would come on down
- 22:01Speaker 3: to the line of scrimmage to the, to the, to
- 22:03Speaker 3: the side that just motion away. So if you, if
- 22:05Speaker 3: you were on the right side and you motion to
- 22:07Speaker 3: the left, that, that linebacker suddenly comes down to the
- 22:10Speaker 3: right side. And I don't know why, but the lines
- 22:12Speaker 3: kind of almost got outgapped at times. And I wonder,
- 22:15Speaker 3: is that something that maybe the bills do, but at
- 22:18Speaker 3: the same time, like on the line side of things,
- 22:20Speaker 3: is this something where, okay, I don't need to do that.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I'm getting a really good angle here.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Now that I'm seeing the fronts and I'm seeing what
- 22:26Speaker 3: I'm going to get, we can actually stick to our guns.
- 22:28Speaker 3: I don't have to add pre-snap motion and those types
- 22:31Speaker 3: of things. Cause if I, if I remember right, they
- 22:33Speaker 3: were third in motion rate in week one and like
- 22:37Speaker 3: seventh or eighth in play action rate, something like that
- 22:40Speaker 3: per a fantasy sports data or fantasy, um, fantasy points data.
- 22:44Speaker 3: I mean, so yeah, I don't know. We're going to
- 22:47Speaker 3: see what happens, but I'm with you. Pin and pull
- 22:49Speaker 3: gap scheme. Let's see what happens. And, and, you know, get,
- 22:52Speaker 3: get a, get a different mix in the backs out there. Um,
- 22:55Speaker 3: even if that means you're handing it off to Vaki,
- 22:57Speaker 3: but it can't be Gibbs 29 times.
- 22:59Speaker 1: No shot.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Yeah. It's a, I mean, I know all the fantasy
- 23:02Speaker 4: owners are like, no, give it to Gibbs 35 times
- 23:04Speaker 4: every game and just see what he can do.
- 23:05Speaker 1: But yeah, that's a, that's a huge workload.
- 23:07Speaker 4: And especially on a short week, like that's, that's, I'm
- 23:10Speaker 4: interested too, to see if they get Gibbs involved more
- 23:12Speaker 4: in the past game, like get them some touches, but
- 23:14Speaker 4: get them on the perimeter and see for a bills
- 23:16Speaker 4: team that, um, dude, They're trying to do more match
- 23:21Speaker 4: coverage stuff. They're learning Jim Leonard's defense in general. There
- 23:25Speaker 4: were some miscommunication aspects in coverage against Houston. Guys kind
- 23:30Speaker 4: of running wide open. Some gaps in coverage. From a
- 23:33Speaker 4: pass game standpoint with the Lions, whether it's under center
- 23:37Speaker 4: or if they get more into gun, what do you
- 23:41Speaker 4: think this Lions pass game does?
- 23:43Speaker 1: Do you think.
- 23:44Speaker 4: They're... Are they going to try and push the ball downfield?
- 23:48Speaker 4: Like for me, it's I'm taking Laporta. I'm creating mismatches
- 23:53Speaker 4: at the second level with him. I would try and
- 23:55Speaker 4: use Gibbs and get him on the perimeter, get him
- 23:58Speaker 4: against the backers. And then I like Amon Ra versus,
- 24:02Speaker 4: I mean, most corners because he's phenomenal. But anywhere on
- 24:05Speaker 4: the interior, anywhere from the numbers, numbers to numbers, whether
- 24:08Speaker 4: it's against Alford, a safety. The Bills went with a
- 24:11Speaker 4: ton of dime in in week one. So, and Bishop
- 24:16Speaker 4: was usually the down safety. So it's, and he's one
- 24:18Speaker 4: apex and D offers the other I'll take granted, even
- 24:21Speaker 4: if it's not man, like I'll take that matchup, whether
- 24:23Speaker 4: it's true man or match or anything like, how do
- 24:26Speaker 4: you think they attack the bills through the air in
- 24:29Speaker 4: this game?
- 24:30Speaker 3: So they showed some really interesting empty looks and some
- 24:33Speaker 3: really interesting three by one looks. And even, you know,
- 24:36Speaker 3: some of those three by one looks were even out
- 24:38Speaker 3: of 12 personnel who is real quick.
- 24:40Speaker 4: And if they're going three by one, who's the backside
- 24:43Speaker 4: wide receiver, who's the one, Um, is it consistently someone
- 24:47Speaker 4: or is it?
- 24:48Speaker 2: No, it, it varied. They, they showed a bunch of
- 24:50Speaker 2: different looks.
- 24:51Speaker 3: There was one three by look side or three by
- 24:53Speaker 3: one look that they gave where to the, to the
- 24:55Speaker 3: three receiver side, it was test. Uh, so from the
- 24:58Speaker 3: sidelines moving in, so how I would number at one, two, three, uh,
- 25:01Speaker 3: one would be Tesla. Two was, uh, Amin, Ron three
- 25:04Speaker 3: was Jamo, but two and three were really condensed down.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It was really interesting. Look, they had numbers in space.
- 25:10Speaker 3: It was, it was in the red zone, but there
- 25:12Speaker 3: were times even just out of empty, like they would have,
- 25:15Speaker 3: Gibbs out wide, and then they would motion him down
- 25:17Speaker 3: and condense him in. There was an early completion where
- 25:22Speaker 3: three receivers ran verts, and then you had a really
- 25:25Speaker 3: nice chip. I posted this yesterday on my X account
- 25:28Speaker 3: at RussNFLDraft where Gibbs chips Chase Young great, and then
- 25:32Speaker 3: just kind of runs OTB and sits right there. And
- 25:35Speaker 3: then off into the flats was Laporta, who was wide open.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Goff threw it to Gibbs, but he could have hit anybody,
- 25:41Speaker 3: could throw it deep. But yeah, it's a really... it's
- 25:45Speaker 3: a really offense where they pick and choose their spots to,
- 25:48Speaker 3: from a passing perspective, to take shots down the field,
- 25:51Speaker 3: specifically with Jamison Williams. But they did show some spots
- 25:55Speaker 3: where Tesla was going deep. And I wonder if that's
- 25:58Speaker 3: something that they consider. He only had one target. It
- 26:01Speaker 3: was early in the game. It was batted down by
- 26:02Speaker 3: Chase Young at the line of scrimmage. He ran a
- 26:07Speaker 3: hitch route. He could have easily caught that pass and
- 26:09Speaker 3: probably turned up for a first down. But it is
- 26:12Speaker 3: one of those things. So I think they're going to
- 26:14Speaker 3: use guys in different ways underneath, and that's the beauty
- 26:16Speaker 3: of it. They have so many variations. Now, at the
- 26:19Speaker 3: same time, they did target Laporta, Gibbs, St. Brown, and
- 26:24Speaker 3: Jamo the majority of the time. So they need to
- 26:27Speaker 3: get something else going, whether that's Tesla, Brock Wright, Jacob Saylors,
- 26:33Speaker 3: Tay Martin, whoever it is. But they love dagger concepts.
- 26:37Speaker 3: They love to attack the middle of the field. But
- 26:39Speaker 3: if the Bills at all are going to invert a
- 26:41Speaker 3: safety down, whether they go you know, from an odd
- 26:43Speaker 3: front or they go to an even front and try
- 26:45Speaker 3: some 4-2-5, whatever the case may be, like a true nickel,
- 26:49Speaker 3: and they invert that safety down, it's going to be
- 26:51Speaker 3: very problematic for the Lions. And I'm starting to maybe
- 26:55Speaker 3: get a feel for something across the league when watching
- 26:58Speaker 3: the Lions over this last year or so where teams
- 27:01Speaker 3: are inverting a safety down to contribute in stopping the
- 27:04Speaker 3: run or they're getting a really good pass drop kind
- 27:08Speaker 3: of mid-hook or, you know, I don't want to say
- 27:12Speaker 3: like cover three or cover four. He's just primarily sitting
- 27:15Speaker 3: as essentially that rat defender. And he's able to, that
- 27:21Speaker 3: safety is able to take away the dagger concept or
- 27:23Speaker 3: any in-break route where that's where, you know, Jared Goff
- 27:28Speaker 3: loves to throw the football.
- 27:29Speaker 2: He loves that dagger concept.
- 27:31Speaker 3: So dagger, anything vertical, obviously Amin Ra, anything one-on-one, some crossers.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Will be in there.
- 27:38Speaker 3: And then, you know, third down, playing it safe, third
- 27:43Speaker 3: and 12 or something, you could potentially see a design
- 27:46Speaker 3: wide receiver screen to maybe pick up some chunk yards
- 27:49Speaker 3: and get into a manageable fourth down if needed.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Is there any, let's say, if you had to call
- 27:57Speaker 4: it right now, does Blake Miller play or does he
- 27:59Speaker 4: not play for you?
- 28:02Speaker 2: I think he plays.
- 28:03Speaker 3: I mean, this is a guy that that he missed
- 28:06Speaker 3: one practice in college coming out.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, right. You know, 3,300 snaps overall in his career.
- 28:11Speaker 2: You know, he's a warrior.
- 28:13Speaker 3: So I think he'll play. I mean, he played that
- 28:16Speaker 3: entire game. He said it didn't bother him until pretty
- 28:19Speaker 3: much the drive home. So maybe it was just adrenaline.
- 28:22Speaker 3: But I think it's one of those things where if
- 28:24Speaker 3: it's nothing too severe, give him a couple days rest.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Again, limited practice tomorrow. Maybe he's ready to go. I
- 28:30Speaker 2: would envision that he plays.
- 28:33Speaker 1: If he plays. whether he's 100% or not, granted no
- 28:36Speaker 1: one's ever really 100% in.
- 28:37Speaker 4: The NFL, is there any aspect of the Bills' pass
- 28:43Speaker 4: rush that you think gives the Lions' offensive line problems?
- 28:46Speaker 4: Is it anybody individually? Is it if they get in
- 28:49Speaker 4: the third and known passing situations, Jim Leonard and what
- 28:52Speaker 4: he's able to cook up? Or is that an aspect
- 28:54Speaker 4: where you're like, no, from a pass pro standpoint, they'll
- 28:57Speaker 4: be fine.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Golf will have time. This front won't concern the Lions
- 29:02Speaker 1: in the pass rush game.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 3: I mean, just with what's going on at, you know,
- 29:07Speaker 3: left guard for this week, um, you know, mahogany is
- 29:10Speaker 3: going to be out probably for a little bit of time. Uh,
- 29:13Speaker 3: he got hurt, uh, in the probably worst possible way, um,
- 29:20Speaker 3: for probably the worst possible way for a player to
- 29:23Speaker 3: get hurt. Uh, he was climbing to the second level,
- 29:25Speaker 3: tripped over his own two feet and essentially like either
- 29:28Speaker 3: hyper extended his knee or hip. Um, I don't know
- 29:31Speaker 3: exactly the severity of the injury. Um, But yeah, with
- 29:35Speaker 3: what's going on at left guard, Ben Bartsch is playing there.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I don't think he looked horrible. I lean towards Ed
- 29:40Speaker 3: Oliver just simply because if you can align him maybe
- 29:44Speaker 3: as a three-tech or something like that, I think he
- 29:47Speaker 3: could be in a really good spot to beat a
- 29:49Speaker 3: player like Ben Bartsch. So we'll kind of see what
- 29:52Speaker 3: happens with the alignments. But Ed Oliver is the one
- 29:54Speaker 3: just because of how explosive he is and how he
- 29:56Speaker 3: can get after the quarterback. and knowing that he's probably
- 29:59Speaker 3: playing against a true backup left guard who is okay,
- 30:03Speaker 3: but he had his spots where he looked rough against
- 30:05Speaker 3: the Saints, and I'd have to imagine with Ed Oliver,
- 30:07Speaker 3: who's a far better player than some of the interior
- 30:10Speaker 3: players as of this moment on the Saints defensive line,
- 30:13Speaker 3: I think I got to go that route.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Flip side of the ball.
- 30:17Speaker 4: The Saints, I'm looking at Charles' comment, but it was
- 30:22Speaker 4: something that's on my mind. Lions defense, Saints offense in
- 30:25Speaker 4: that game. Charles asked it. Um, I think someone else,
- 30:28Speaker 4: I'll say a Charles asked that earlier. I watched, again,
- 30:31Speaker 4: I've only watched a little bit of it. What changed
- 30:34Speaker 4: in that game from a game where the line lines.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Were up 21, nothing.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Up 21, nothing.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:41Speaker 2: 21, nothing.
- 30:42Speaker 4: What changed in that game where shuck in the saints offense,
- 30:45Speaker 4: just aside from, you know, some big chunk plays to
- 30:49Speaker 4: a lava and then, uh, vele number 14 um you
- 30:53Speaker 4: know kind of just starting to get some things they
- 30:55Speaker 4: had a couple chunk runs from hn who i'm still
- 30:57Speaker 4: having to it's still yeah i'm gonna say etn 100
- 31:00Speaker 4: right and like the fact that i have to pronounce
- 31:02Speaker 4: his name just like devon hn from like miami essentially
- 31:05Speaker 4: like it's throwing me for a loop so much and
- 31:07Speaker 4: i'm also used to people like never writing it out
- 31:10Speaker 4: on social they would just literally write the letters etn
- 31:13Speaker 4: because that's how it was for forever like just absolutely
- 31:16Speaker 4: threw me for a loop um What happened in that game? Again,
- 31:21Speaker 4: Lions defense banged up in the secondary like they have
- 31:24Speaker 4: been seemingly for the past two years, but things were
- 31:27Speaker 4: working up front for them, and then all of a sudden,
- 31:29Speaker 4: they're getting gashed. They're giving up points. That game goes
- 31:31Speaker 4: to OT. Saints went for the win late. They don't
- 31:34Speaker 4: get it, but what kind of happened? Is there anything
- 31:36Speaker 4: the Saints did? Was it on the Lions? Was it
- 31:38Speaker 4: purely just, hey, you give up some explosives, and that's
- 31:41Speaker 4: just the nature of football, and the Saints just said,
- 31:43Speaker 4: screw it, we're down three scores, let's start chucking it
- 31:45Speaker 4: around the field and see what happens? Or was there
- 31:47Speaker 4: something a little more systematic tied to that for you
- 31:51Speaker 4: when watching the tape?
- 31:52Speaker 3: I don't think it was anything particular to systematic or
- 31:56Speaker 3: anything within the scheme. Lions stayed aggressive. They were super
- 32:00Speaker 3: aggressive getting after it. You know, Shuck did a really
- 32:04Speaker 3: poor job against, you know, the Blitz, and the Lions
- 32:08Speaker 3: were getting home a bunch in the first half. That
- 32:12Speaker 3: didn't end up happening in the second half as much
- 32:13Speaker 3: with them getting home. They got some pressure, and they
- 32:16Speaker 3: got sacks and things like that. Roger McCreary was aligned
- 32:20Speaker 3: in the slot as a nickel, and they blitzed him
- 32:22Speaker 3: a couple different times. I think he had three pressures
- 32:24Speaker 3: in this game. He did have a sack. So he'll
- 32:29Speaker 3: catch you by surprise, but I do wonder, for the
- 32:31Speaker 3: Bills' sake, does that catch McCreary off guard a little
- 32:35Speaker 3: bit just because if he gets too deep in the
- 32:38Speaker 3: backfield and kind of overrushes Josh Allen?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Can he expose him in any way? Do you get out,
- 32:43Speaker 2: you know, do you get rid of the football quickly?
- 32:45Speaker 3: And that's essentially what Tyler Shuck started to do. He
- 32:48Speaker 3: started just kind of finding the open guy. There were routes,
- 32:51Speaker 3: you know, in certain areas of the field where the
- 32:53Speaker 3: Lions were kind of playing off in their coverage. They
- 32:56Speaker 3: weren't playing press man. They weren't staying true to just
- 32:59Speaker 3: strictly man coverage. They were mixing in some zone. So
- 33:02Speaker 3: I think maybe there was some miscommunication, maybe just some
- 33:04Speaker 3: slow turns out of, you know, opening their hips and
- 33:06Speaker 3: flipping their hips. and running with the receiver. But like
- 33:10Speaker 3: you mentioned, Bailey had a great catch, one that was
- 33:12Speaker 3: like 37 yards.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Olave had a couple of big grabs.
- 33:15Speaker 3: And I think between those two players, they had three
- 33:18Speaker 3: or four catches in that second half that totaled 120 yards. So,
- 33:24Speaker 3: you know, Shuck, he had 410 yards passing. That's with
- 33:29Speaker 3: 73 of them coming in overtime. The Lions had him
- 33:33Speaker 3: at fourth and 12 and gave up. a huge pass
- 33:36Speaker 3: at fourth and 12 and kind of a scramble essentially.
- 33:40Speaker 3: So it was one of those things like if you,
- 33:43Speaker 3: I don't like it. These guys on the saints, you know,
- 33:52Speaker 3: the saints are getting some, some really big catches in
- 33:55Speaker 3: some big plays. If, if you'll, if you eliminate though,
- 33:59Speaker 3: you know, the OT and those big plays, it's.
- 34:03Speaker 2: About 193 yards in total. that Tyler Shuck had.
- 34:06Speaker 3: So I think the number's a little inflated, but at
- 34:10Speaker 3: the same time, like the Lions got to continue to pressure,
- 34:12Speaker 3: they got to get home, but they, their dudes need
- 34:15Speaker 3: to make some plays. I mean, that's what it boils
- 34:17Speaker 3: down to. But at the same time, Lions have to
- 34:20Speaker 3: execute a little bit better on offense. Like they, they
- 34:22Speaker 3: had a couple of turnovers right out of the gates
- 34:25Speaker 3: in the, in the third quarter there, they, they had
- 34:28Speaker 3: an interception. So it's, it's one of those things like
- 34:32Speaker 3: you're making plays and, but offensively they've also got to execute.
- 34:35Speaker 3: But that was the big thing, you know, from, from
- 34:37Speaker 3: Tyler Shuck and defensively from the Lions in that second half.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Lions defense, you, you talked on some of the coverage pieces.
- 34:46Speaker 4: I feel like for years under Glenn, even under Shepard
- 34:49Speaker 4: a little bit too, like man coverage. So, you know,
- 34:51Speaker 4: cover one single high man coverage. We're going to do
- 34:52Speaker 4: that last year. A bunch of base, like, I thought
- 34:57Speaker 4: they were really creative with Derek Barnes last year. I
- 34:59Speaker 4: remember you and I talking about Derek Barnes early in
- 35:01Speaker 4: the year last year, like if Derek Barnes is like
- 35:03Speaker 4: pretty sweet and they're finding ways to get him on
- 35:05Speaker 4: the field with Anzalone and Campbell, you know, from a,
- 35:09Speaker 4: I guess from, from an identity standpoint, what does, and again, it's, it's,
- 35:14Speaker 4: it's murky, right? Cause branches on the IR and Kirby
- 35:18Speaker 4: is also on the IR and they're so banged up
- 35:21Speaker 4: in that aspect.
- 35:22Speaker 1: But what do they do? what do they want to
- 35:25Speaker 1: be defensively?
- 35:26Speaker 4: Are we still looking at this man coverage, single high
- 35:28Speaker 4: type of world? Are they a little more, are they
- 35:31Speaker 4: a little more zone now? And do you think that's
- 35:33Speaker 4: here to stay? Like who are the, is it, is
- 35:35Speaker 4: it because of the injuries and the new personnel they have?
- 35:38Speaker 4: Just talk a little bit about the Lions defensive structure
- 35:40Speaker 4: and how similar it is to years past when they
- 35:42Speaker 4: kind of came on the map and, you know, to,
- 35:45Speaker 4: to what they are now and what you expect to
- 35:47Speaker 4: see in this game.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I mean, I think they're trying to be trendy.
- 35:52Speaker 3: I think they, they want to be, that nickel defense
- 35:55Speaker 3: at times are getting away from that base.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Look a little bit.
- 35:58Speaker 3: They started the game. The two inside backers were Jack
- 36:01Speaker 3: Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez, but we saw a lot of
- 36:04Speaker 3: use of the nickel and extra safety here and there. Um, and,
- 36:08Speaker 3: and they got aggressive with it. Roger McCreary was coming down, um, and,
- 36:12Speaker 3: you know, playing in past coverage, but also blitzing. We
- 36:15Speaker 3: saw some Keith Abney in that spot. There were times
- 36:18Speaker 3: that you would see Avante Maddox in that spot. Who's
- 36:20Speaker 3: also listed as a safety. Um, um, He got kind
- 36:24Speaker 3: of banged up with either an elbow or a shoulder,
- 36:26Speaker 3: but he's okay. But yeah, I mean, but overall, like, yeah,
- 36:32Speaker 3: they still want to be man. They want to be aggressive,
- 36:34Speaker 3: but they are getting more into a traditional cover three
- 36:37Speaker 3: and they want to play some zone. And I think
- 36:40Speaker 3: they're going to give you all kinds of different looks
- 36:42Speaker 3: and just try to make this thing work while they've
- 36:44Speaker 3: got guys out. But, you know, from a player standpoint,
- 36:47Speaker 3: guys that you got to watch out for, like obviously
- 36:50Speaker 3: Aiden Hutchinson, Ali McNeil, Tyleek Williams had a great first
- 36:53Speaker 3: game against the run. I mean, when he was, when
- 36:56Speaker 3: he was on, on the field, they were getting under
- 37:00Speaker 3: four yards per carry. They were in 3.7 yards per carry.
- 37:03Speaker 3: When he was off the field, they were getting 6.2
- 37:05Speaker 3: yards per carry. So like big splits, but like they
- 37:09Speaker 3: got to play Skylar Gil Howard as well, because he's
- 37:11Speaker 3: just so explosive against the past, but also the past
- 37:14Speaker 3: game really kind of took over in that fourth quarter.
- 37:17Speaker 2: So like, hey, Tyleek might not get home. We got
- 37:19Speaker 2: to get him off.
- 37:21Speaker 3: And that's when some of those big runs were happening
- 37:23Speaker 3: as well. So they got some things that they've got
- 37:26Speaker 3: to clean up and offensively to kind of help with that.
- 37:31Speaker 3: But overall, defensively, I think that they are a.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Team that they're going to play physical. They're going to
- 37:41Speaker 2: play tough.
- 37:43Speaker 3: But being super aggressive is, I think, going to be
- 37:46Speaker 3: the new mindset. set similar to what we've seen with
- 37:48Speaker 3: teams like Seattle and Los Angeles.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Oh, very interesting.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Facing the bills this week from a lion's defensive perspective,
- 38:00Speaker 4: what are you more worried about? And it could be equal,
- 38:02Speaker 4: but what are you more worried about defending the bills
- 38:05Speaker 4: run game, which did get stymied a little bit in
- 38:07Speaker 4: week one against Houston. But I mean, Houston's got a.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Good run defense.
- 38:11Speaker 4: I think they keyed in on the run more so
- 38:13Speaker 4: than anything that left them a little vulnerable on the
- 38:15Speaker 4: backend and, I mean, Allen also created some plays out
- 38:17Speaker 4: of structure from the past perspective as well, and they
- 38:19Speaker 4: just had some one-on-one win plays.
- 38:22Speaker 1: But what concerns you more?
- 38:24Speaker 4: Is it the Bills' run game, or are you more
- 38:28Speaker 4: concerned the pass game? Not even just like Josh Allen
- 38:32Speaker 4: doing crazy stuff, but is that where your head is at?
- 38:36Speaker 4: Is it like, uh-oh, how do we deal with the pass?
- 38:38Speaker 1: How do we cover?
- 38:39Speaker 4: Who matches up on Kincaid? That, to me, is the
- 38:41Speaker 4: biggest mismatch opportunity. for the bills in this game. Like
- 38:44Speaker 4: I will take Kincaid on anybody really in the interior,
- 38:48Speaker 4: especially with, with, with branch and Joseph, like being banged up. I'll,
- 38:51Speaker 4: I'll take Kincaid essentially against like anybody in the, in
- 38:54Speaker 4: the coverage aspect, second and third levels. But is it,
- 38:58Speaker 4: are you fearful of that? Is there anything with DJ more?
- 39:00Speaker 4: Is it anything with Khalil Shakir? Is it anything with
- 39:03Speaker 4: the past game in general? Or for you, is it like,
- 39:06Speaker 4: you know, I'm worried about the run or do you
- 39:07Speaker 4: feel more confident in that? Cause it's like, no, I'll
- 39:09Speaker 4: let Ty leak and, and a limb McNeil do it,
- 39:12Speaker 4: do their thing on the interior and Aiden and want
- 39:14Speaker 4: them and the rest of the crew upfront kind of
- 39:17Speaker 4: do their thing. You know, is it past game related?
- 39:19Speaker 4: Is it run game related? Where does your worries lie
- 39:22Speaker 4: when it comes to the Lions defense? Or you could
- 39:24Speaker 4: say both, if you're so inclined.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Definitely some of those perimeter match or more so those
- 39:30Speaker 3: interior matchups with Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir, like that
- 39:34Speaker 3: worries me a little bit. But a lot of that
- 39:37Speaker 3: stems just because of Josh Allen, like what he's able
- 39:40Speaker 3: to do, how he can run the football. I know
- 39:43Speaker 3: he had two rushing touchdowns last week, not a ton
- 39:45Speaker 3: of yards, but like how he can create plays and
- 39:47Speaker 3: with how shifty those guys are, like I think that
- 39:50Speaker 3: they could get in some really good spots with good
- 39:53Speaker 3: angles and finding ways to get open in different route combinations,
- 39:57Speaker 3: but just, just finding space. And I think if they
- 39:59Speaker 3: can find some space, like I worry about some of
- 40:02Speaker 3: the speed that the lions have just because of how
- 40:05Speaker 3: downhill they are. I don't know if this is a
- 40:07Speaker 3: team that is going to be able to get downhill
- 40:09Speaker 3: and quickly change an angle and get in the hip
- 40:12Speaker 3: pocket of Shakira as he, as he kind of hits
- 40:14Speaker 3: like a stick and nod or something like that. Like,
- 40:17Speaker 3: you know, I, what, what is it, what, what, what
- 40:19Speaker 3: is that going to look like? So I'm so curious
- 40:22Speaker 3: on how the matchup goes. Um, and with, with like
- 40:25Speaker 3: Dalton Kincaid, you're right. Who is truthfully going to be
- 40:29Speaker 3: able to guard him? Like Jack Campbell does a decent job,
- 40:32Speaker 3: but is it, is it going to be Derek Barnes?
- 40:34Speaker 3: Because just Derek Barnes has shown that he can kind
- 40:37Speaker 3: of cover a little bit.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Is it, is it a Jimmy roller? He didn't do it,
- 40:41Speaker 3: you know, at a super high level in college, but
- 40:44Speaker 3: a good enough level. It's certainly not going to be
- 40:46Speaker 3: Devin white. So, um, you know, he can't cover anybody. Um,
- 40:51Speaker 3: but I don't know, is, is it Christian eyes and
- 40:53Speaker 3: he's supposed to be back potentially this week. So we'll see,
- 40:56Speaker 3: but it's going to be a fun matchup. I mean,
- 40:59Speaker 3: there's just, I could go forever on, on what these
- 41:02Speaker 3: matchups are. Um, you know, even like DJ more, I
- 41:07Speaker 3: think he's going to get in some really interesting spots,
- 41:10Speaker 3: especially if he can match up with like Rocky scene
- 41:12Speaker 3: or something like that. Like, I think he'll be able
- 41:15Speaker 3: to outrun him and kind of out move him a
- 41:17Speaker 3: little bit. And DJ reads dealing with this foot injury.
- 41:20Speaker 3: So we'll, we'll kind of see.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I'm really interested.
- 41:24Speaker 4: The first thing that hit me, you know, I, I
- 41:26Speaker 4: didn't get through the full lions versus saints tape. I
- 41:29Speaker 4: really have to like watch it and do the full eval,
- 41:31Speaker 4: but I was checking out like specific players and specific things.
- 41:34Speaker 4: And I saw the, I think it was the Jawan
- 41:37Speaker 4: Johnson touchdown where he essentially just runs by Jack Campbell.
- 41:40Speaker 1: And the first thing I thought of, I was like,
- 41:41Speaker 1: can Kate, And then in.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Just looking at, knowing as soon as I heard a
- 41:48Speaker 4: couple weeks ago or whatever, that Kirby and Branch are
- 41:51Speaker 4: going to be on IR for the first four weeks
- 41:53Speaker 4: or whatever, my first thought was Kincaid again. And then
- 41:55Speaker 4: I saw that Juwan Johnson touchdown, and I thought that.
- 41:58Speaker 4: But even to your point, I look at, you and
- 42:01Speaker 4: I were talking about it offline, I do think it's
- 42:03Speaker 4: going to be a track meet, which means it'll end
- 42:06Speaker 4: up probably being like 13 to 10, and both defenses
- 42:08Speaker 4: will ball out.
- 42:08Speaker 1: We'll be like, how did that happen?
- 42:11Speaker 4: But I really do look at, you know, I have
- 42:13Speaker 4: questions about the bills defense, but then I think there's
- 42:16Speaker 4: questions on the lions defense from a health standpoint.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And then from a matchup standpoint.
- 42:21Speaker 4: And if I like, if I'm the bills and I've
- 42:23Speaker 4: said this before, like so much, I, the run game
- 42:25Speaker 4: is what stirs the drink. James cook that offensive line,
- 42:28Speaker 4: the run game, the under center pass game that extends
- 42:31Speaker 4: from it, whether it's play action or straight drop back.
- 42:33Speaker 4: But I look at the front and I like, even
- 42:35Speaker 4: if we're just looking at it on paper, I'd be like,
- 42:36Speaker 4: you know what? Like instead of trying to deal with
- 42:39Speaker 4: like to leak Williams and a limb McNeil and I'm
- 42:42Speaker 4: going to go deal with Rocky Sin and Maddox and
- 42:45Speaker 4: Chuck Clark and like DJ Reed and whoever's at nickel.
- 42:48Speaker 4: And I'll take my chances with whoever I can get
- 42:50Speaker 4: Kincaid matched up against. I'll take DJ more against either
- 42:53Speaker 4: of the outside corners. Although I know DJ Reed isn't
- 42:56Speaker 4: necessarily what he was when he was with the Jets,
- 42:57Speaker 4: but I think DJ Reed is still a good corner.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:01Speaker 4: But I think, I think the past game, the back
- 43:04Speaker 4: seven for the lions versus the bills eligible pass catchers,
- 43:09Speaker 4: I think that advantage is bills eligible pass catchers. Even if,
- 43:13Speaker 4: you know, the running backs get involved in the past
- 43:15Speaker 4: game a little bit more this week for the bills,
- 43:17Speaker 4: they didn't really do that much in week one against
- 43:19Speaker 4: the Texans, but that to me screams advantage. And I
- 43:24Speaker 4: think they could run the ball a bit too, but
- 43:26Speaker 4: it's almost to the point that I, I like, I
- 43:29Speaker 4: just kind of want to get out there and chuck
- 43:31Speaker 4: it a ton against the lions defense until they show
- 43:34Speaker 4: me that they're going to stop it. The same, the
- 43:36Speaker 4: same way that, I think the lion should come out
- 43:39Speaker 4: and try and run through the bill's face until the
- 43:41Speaker 4: bills prove that they can stop it. Or until the
- 43:44Speaker 4: bills prove like, Hey, we can stop it without having
- 43:46Speaker 4: to allocate a ton of resources to it. The same
- 43:48Speaker 4: way I feel about that with the lion's offense. I
- 43:50Speaker 4: feel that way with the bill's offense and throwing the
- 43:53Speaker 4: football against the lion's defense.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:57Speaker 3: You know, and the more that you, you talk about everything,
- 44:00Speaker 3: I'm going in a completely different direction because like thinking like,
- 44:04Speaker 3: cause you got my wheel spinning and I'm thinking like
- 44:06Speaker 3: to previous games and like, Yeah, they'll struggle with Josh Allen,
- 44:10Speaker 3: like talking about Detroit. But I do worry about James
- 44:16Speaker 3: Cook a little bit more than maybe I should. But
- 44:20Speaker 3: I think the Lions, in the past, and just under
- 44:24Speaker 3: this coaching staff, they have struggled with players like James Cook.
- 44:30Speaker 3: That is a perfect spot. The way he runs the football,
- 44:34Speaker 3: there's a perfect spot in this game where he's going.
- 44:36Speaker 2: To break one forever.
- 44:37Speaker 3: 40 yards and then get a big screen pass or
- 44:40Speaker 3: get out into the flats and like how they utilize
- 44:42Speaker 3: him underneath, because these linebackers are going to have to
- 44:45Speaker 3: get depth at times with, with some of the speed
- 44:48Speaker 3: that's going to get behind them. And the same thing
- 44:51Speaker 3: with the corners, like they're going to have to bail
- 44:53Speaker 3: as well. But also like if they are bringing pressure,
- 44:57Speaker 3: I mean, is there a way that the, that the, the,
- 45:00Speaker 3: the bills can, can utilize Josh Allen and make them,
- 45:04Speaker 3: think you know you run some read option i'm not
- 45:06Speaker 3: saying like you do that all the time but is
- 45:09Speaker 3: there an rpo that you can run with that um
- 45:12Speaker 3: and and things like that i i don't know i
- 45:14Speaker 3: think i think the playbook's kind of wide open for
- 45:16Speaker 3: for brady.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Here i'm also interested too with with what the bills
- 45:20Speaker 4: did against the texans in week one and trying to
- 45:24Speaker 4: counteract anderson and hunter in that front like the different
- 45:26Speaker 4: chips that they were.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Doing that's moving right there sorry what's the comment.
- 45:31Speaker 3: I didn't see it Texans sold out to stop Cook
- 45:33Speaker 3: and forgot that Allen was QB.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Oh, that's funny.
- 45:35Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I think they did kind of, hey,
- 45:38Speaker 4: we're going to focus on the run. And they got
- 45:41Speaker 4: God in the past a little bit. I mean, also, too, like, again,
- 45:44Speaker 4: not even to play devil's advocate, like, there's a chance
- 45:47Speaker 4: that game ends if Kamari Lasseter doesn't drop that interception.
- 45:50Speaker 1: That was, like, gifted to him.
- 45:53Speaker 4: And that pass to DJ Moore for the touchdown is, like, funny,
- 45:57Speaker 4: but re-blanket ship, like, bro, you got to make that play.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Um, right.
- 46:02Speaker 4: So there's kind of some wonkiness there, uh, potentially, but yeah,
- 46:06Speaker 4: I do think the Texans came into that game being like,
- 46:09Speaker 4: we got to stop cook and we'll be fine elsewhere.
- 46:11Speaker 4: And then they weren't, um, combination because of some of
- 46:14Speaker 4: the things the bills did, but also because the Texans
- 46:16Speaker 4: kind of shot themselves in the foot and threw up,
- 46:18Speaker 4: threw up on themselves.
- 46:19Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Um, but I, I wonder with what the bills did
- 46:26Speaker 4: against the Texans from a front perspective, like, Hey, we're
- 46:29Speaker 4: going to, we're.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Going to chip.
- 46:31Speaker 4: DJ Moore is chipping edges. Dalton Kincaid is chipping, let
- 46:34Speaker 4: alone Knox and what they're doing in the backs.
- 46:36Speaker 1: And I wonder how concerned.
- 46:39Speaker 4: They are with Hutch, who I feel like with what
- 46:45Speaker 4: Miles Garrett is and what Will Anderson is, or at
- 46:48Speaker 4: least his ascension. And I don't know if it's because
- 46:50Speaker 4: the Lions faltered a bit recently or because Hutch got
- 46:54Speaker 4: hurt recently. he's still like one of the best edges
- 46:58Speaker 4: in football and like one of the best pure pass
- 47:01Speaker 4: rushers in all of football.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Like dude is an absolute stud.
- 47:03Speaker 4: And so I wonder they're like, how many resources do
- 47:07Speaker 4: they have to allocate to him? Like, do you have
- 47:10Speaker 4: to chip him regularly? Do, are you comfortable leaving him
- 47:12Speaker 4: like one-on-one? And if you do leave him one-on-one, how
- 47:15Speaker 4: much does he make you pay?
- 47:16Speaker 1: Is it none? Is it zero times?
- 47:18Speaker 4: Is it one?
- 47:19Speaker 1: Is it two? How severe is that payment?
- 47:21Speaker 2: Hey, Jackson Hawes, you're busy. You're staying busy.
- 47:25Speaker 4: You're in line a bunch this game, buddy, and you're
- 47:27Speaker 4: going to chip and beat the hell out of him
- 47:29Speaker 4: a lot. And then, honestly, you might get five catches
- 47:32Speaker 4: in the flat because we're going to send guys deep
- 47:35Speaker 4: and no cover zone is going to be open underneath.
- 47:37Speaker 4: I wonder how much they lean into.
- 47:40Speaker 1: somewhat kind of similar to the game plan they did
- 47:42Speaker 1: against Houston, right?
- 47:43Speaker 4: Where, you know, I know you don't have two edges,
- 47:44Speaker 4: the level of that, but you do have a premier
- 47:46Speaker 4: guy and you do have good guys up front. And
- 47:48Speaker 4: is it, we're going to do some of the chip
- 47:50Speaker 4: release stuff and try and get them off kilter a
- 47:52Speaker 4: little bit. We are going to move the pocket. We
- 47:54Speaker 4: are going to do some boots. I really like the
- 47:57Speaker 4: idea of, and this is just in general for the Bills,
- 48:01Speaker 4: but especially against the Lions defense, like I love the
- 48:03Speaker 4: under center play action game where we're sending guys deep
- 48:06Speaker 4: and it's like, here comes the run. Uh-oh, nope, we
- 48:09Speaker 4: got to get deep. And then it's like, well, I'm
- 48:11Speaker 4: going to release that running back out that I just
- 48:12Speaker 4: played fake to. And now James cake, James cake, James
- 48:15Speaker 4: cook has eight, eight yards, eight yards of space.
- 48:19Speaker 1: And I'm going to dump it to him like two
- 48:20Speaker 1: yards past the line.
- 48:21Speaker 4: And now he's in space against Barnes and Campbell and
- 48:25Speaker 4: whoever else is down there. I, so I like the
- 48:27Speaker 4: vertical stretch aspect. Maybe we take some shots, maybe it
- 48:30Speaker 4: opens up some things underneath and we can create some
- 48:32Speaker 4: space in yards after catch that way. And then I
- 48:35Speaker 4: also wonder, uh, yeah, how much do they try to
- 48:37Speaker 4: move him off the spot? Or is it just like,
- 48:39Speaker 4: you know, no, we feel confident doing our five-man protection
- 48:42Speaker 4: stuff against the Lions front. And if that happens, you know,
- 48:46Speaker 4: does Hutch make them pay? Because he's very, very, very
- 48:48Speaker 4: capable of that.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely a player, you know, you
- 48:56Speaker 3: have to worry about. There's no doubt about it. He's
- 48:58Speaker 3: just so talented. He wins from those wide alignments. There
- 49:03Speaker 3: are definitely times like when teams are three by one,
- 49:05Speaker 3: And he's basically tilted into the alignment of the slot receiver.
- 49:10Speaker 3: And it's just like, man, like get down a little bit,
- 49:13Speaker 3: you know, um so you don't get chipped but um.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Hutchinson currently right now is the league leader in pressures
- 49:20Speaker 4: uh per next gen at 10 pressures he had two
- 49:24Speaker 4: 10 pressures and two sacks uh in week one and
- 49:28Speaker 4: he also had a pressure rate of 20 so uh pretty.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Good yeah yeah no he yeah he's he's for sure
- 49:34Speaker 3: good but like i said like jackson hawes you're gonna
- 49:37Speaker 3: have a busy day you're gonna be playing in that
- 49:39Speaker 3: spot and yeah, I don't know. I think, I think
- 49:43Speaker 3: to your, I agree with everything you're saying. Like James
- 49:45Speaker 3: Cook is, I don't know. I think he could have
- 49:47Speaker 3: a really good day. That's probably going to be the
- 49:48Speaker 3: player prop that I have for most of Sunday or
- 49:51Speaker 3: most of Thursday.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Of course you tied it into a bet. I don't
- 49:53Speaker 1: know why. I don't know why I thought you wouldn't
- 49:55Speaker 1: tie it into betting any. All right. So we're at
- 49:58Speaker 1: 48 minutes. Any other, I promised I would get you
- 50:00Speaker 1: out on time.
- 50:02Speaker 4: Any final thoughts, anything we didn't talk about, anything you
- 50:07Speaker 4: think matters, anything, Of anything, offensively, defensively, individual player piece,
- 50:14Speaker 4: question you have, anything you got.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Now is the time before I send you on your
- 50:19Speaker 1: way so you can go to sleep.
- 50:21Speaker 2: Man, I don't know. I think I'm good. I think
- 50:25Speaker 2: we talked about everything.
- 50:27Speaker 3: I mean, we went over a really deep dive on
- 50:30Speaker 3: the Lions offense, Bills offense just a few minutes ago.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're good. I don't think I have
- 50:38Speaker 2: any questions, dude.
- 50:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Good. I'm going to keep trudging on here.
- 50:42Speaker 4: We're going to do some stuff with the live chat
- 50:43Speaker 4: and talk about some more things, bills, but I wanted
- 50:46Speaker 4: to get you out on time and I'm a man
- 50:47Speaker 4: of my word.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Well, technically not. I would four minutes past. So I
- 50:49Speaker 1: was close though.
- 50:51Speaker 4: But just in case people don't know who you are,
- 50:54Speaker 4: what you do, all that stuff, the floor is yours.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Tell everybody where they can find your work, everything you're doing.
- 50:59Speaker 4: NFL season's here. College season is here. Like you're tapped
- 51:03Speaker 4: into both at a very extensive and detailed level.
- 51:05Speaker 1: So the floor is yours. Anything and everything you want.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Speak to the people.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Thanks brother.
- 51:11Speaker 3: Um, yeah, no, uh, always appreciate it. Always a lot
- 51:14Speaker 3: of fun coming back on here. Um, anytime, um, maybe
- 51:18Speaker 3: we'll do some film stuff on this, uh, in a,
- 51:20Speaker 3: in a week or two. Um, we'll discuss it, but, uh, yeah, no, uh,
- 51:25Speaker 3: find me on X at Russ NFL draft.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Probably most of you already do.
- 51:31Speaker 3: Um, and support my work over at the draft report
- 51:34Speaker 3: dot sub stack.com. Not, Not much content on there right
- 51:38Speaker 3: now for this current draft cycle coming up, but we'll
- 51:41Speaker 3: get into it. Still breaking down film and those types
- 51:45Speaker 3: of things, but outside of that, check out thelionswire.com.
- 51:48Speaker 2: That's where all my Lions stuff is.
- 51:50Speaker 3: I got a video breakdown coming from the Saints game,
- 51:53Speaker 3: so we'll get into that. And then, of course, find
- 51:58Speaker 3: me over at the Detroit Lions podcast, where I host
- 52:03Speaker 3: a podcast talking Detroit Lions. check it out on YouTube
- 52:06Speaker 3: at Detroit lines podcast.
- 52:08Speaker 4: One of the best football minds in this space. I
- 52:11Speaker 4: say this sincerely, you coach ball, you know, what's up,
- 52:14Speaker 4: you know, the game, you know, individual player evaluation, you know,
- 52:18Speaker 4: scheme and structure, both sides of the ball. You're somebody who,
- 52:21Speaker 4: you know, can see a play and, Oh, this is
- 52:24Speaker 4: the run concept.
- 52:24Speaker 1: This is the pass blocking, you know, call here. This
- 52:27Speaker 1: is what the protection was.
- 52:28Speaker 4: This is what the defense is doing, you know, individual
- 52:31Speaker 4: responsibilities and larger schematic things. Um, And I think that
- 52:34Speaker 4: makes you so great covering the lions talking NFL in general,
- 52:37Speaker 4: but then especially, yeah, of course, but especially the college
- 52:39Speaker 4: stuff where I really started to learn your work back
- 52:44Speaker 4: in the day when you were with cover one, but
- 52:45Speaker 4: you are one of the best. I can't imagine how
- 52:47Speaker 4: tough this time of year is. Cause I always tell
- 52:49Speaker 4: myself like, you know what? I need to watch more
- 52:52Speaker 4: college tape during the year and I'm going to do that.
- 52:54Speaker 4: And then like, it's already been like a couple of
- 52:56Speaker 4: weeks and I haven't watched anything and I'm like, yeah,
- 52:57Speaker 4: just screw it.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Like I'm going to have to save it until February.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Like I always do. And then just grind nonstop.
- 53:01Speaker 4: Like, I can't imagine you trying to live in both worlds,
- 53:04Speaker 4: but you do a phenomenal job in everything that you do,
- 53:07Speaker 4: everything that you touch. Yeah, your work speaks for itself,
- 53:10Speaker 4: and I appreciate you, as always, taking the time to
- 53:12Speaker 4: stop by, join me, and yeah, enjoy the rest of
- 53:15Speaker 4: your Tuesday night.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Go get some sleep, get some rest, and I appreciate.
- 53:18Speaker 4: The hell out of you.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Thanks, man.
- 53:20Speaker 2: We'll chat soon.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Sounds good.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Later.
- 53:24Speaker 3: See you.
- 53:25Speaker 4: Peace.
- 53:27Speaker 3: Mr.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Russell Brown, one of the best in the business. And
- 53:30Speaker 1: I'm not just saying that. I sincerely mean that.
- 53:33Speaker 4: All right, so we're going to trudge on here, talk
- 53:34Speaker 4: a little Bills defense and some film evaluation stuff, but
- 53:37Speaker 4: anything else as we do here, questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 53:41Speaker 4: anything and everything you folks have, feel free to put
- 53:44Speaker 4: it into the chat. I'm going to talk about the
- 53:47Speaker 4: Bills defense for a little bit, answer some questions from
- 53:50Speaker 4: the chat if there are any, or questions, thoughts, comments, concerns.
- 53:53Speaker 4: And if there aren't, we'll get out of here in
- 53:54Speaker 4: a little bit. But yeah, we'll jump to the live
- 53:56Speaker 4: chat and any thoughts that anyone joining us live does have. Um,
- 54:02Speaker 4: and in the meantime, as you folks start to bring
- 54:04Speaker 4: up some things, I wanted to talk about the bills
- 54:06Speaker 4: defense a little bit and getting through the tape. And, um,
- 54:09Speaker 4: I heard some of the things that Jim Leonard said
- 54:11Speaker 4: at the presser. I watched some parts of it. I
- 54:13Speaker 4: didn't get through all of it completely at this point. Um,
- 54:17Speaker 4: but you know, him talking about, you know, there are
- 54:18Speaker 4: correctable mistakes and being encouraged. And I think one of
- 54:21Speaker 4: the lines was, you know, the film, he felt better
- 54:24Speaker 4: about the game after watching the tape. Um, I felt
- 54:27Speaker 4: somewhat similarly. Start with the run defense. I put it
- 54:32Speaker 4: into the chat earlier. I'm going to go back and
- 54:34Speaker 4: grab what I said. Yeah, so out of, you know,
- 54:37Speaker 4: as week one has been completed right now, the Bills
- 54:38Speaker 4: run defense in week one, 27th in EPA per rush allowed,
- 54:43Speaker 4: and 23rd in success rate allowed, purely from a run perspective.
- 54:48Speaker 4: And that rushing success rate allowed was 58.1%. That is
- 54:50Speaker 4: per PFF.
- 54:51Speaker 1: That is not.
- 54:55Speaker 4: An ideal way to start the year from a rush perspective.
- 55:01Speaker 4: From a rushing DVOA perspective, so DVOA puts everybody on
- 55:05Speaker 4: an even playing field, considers quality of opponent situation. It's
- 55:11Speaker 4: only week one, so sample size across the board for
- 55:13Speaker 4: that is a little smaller at this stage, but they
- 55:15Speaker 4: were 17th in week one rushing DVOA. And then overall
- 55:20Speaker 4: from a DVOA perspective defensively, they are 22nd as of
- 55:25Speaker 4: right now. So towards the bottom of the league and
- 55:28Speaker 4: some rush defense metrics, kind of, you know, middling to
- 55:32Speaker 4: below middling in some others, but watching the game, I
- 55:37Speaker 4: did not think, you know, or I, I saw another
- 55:40Speaker 4: quote that Jim Leonard said, and I thought it, I
- 55:42Speaker 4: thought it was really on point. He mentioned some stuff about,
- 55:44Speaker 4: you know, guys playing confidently, kind of just making decisions
- 55:47Speaker 4: and playing fast and how he can set guys up
- 55:50Speaker 4: better for success in those ways. And I think you
- 55:52Speaker 4: did see that, especially in the first half, there were
- 55:53Speaker 4: times where guys were, you saw it in coverage, but
- 55:56Speaker 4: you saw it in run defense as well, where guys
- 55:59Speaker 4: are thinking a little bit. And as they're thinking that
- 56:04Speaker 4: quarter of a second, that half a second is the
- 56:06Speaker 4: difference between, you know, shooting the gap and making the
- 56:09Speaker 4: play in the backfield versus going through the gap and
- 56:12Speaker 4: having to lunge and try and make a tackle at
- 56:15Speaker 4: David Montgomery, because you weren't able to kind of meet
- 56:17Speaker 4: them more in the hole with a better angle and
- 56:18Speaker 4: better leverage and better positioning. So I think as the
- 56:22Speaker 4: year goes on, I think the run defense can improve.
- 56:25Speaker 4: I think there were some correctable aspects in terms of,
- 56:28Speaker 4: you know, getting guys to play with more confidence. I
- 56:30Speaker 4: think the more they see their, you know, the more
- 56:36Speaker 4: they get these reps together, I should say, as a team,
- 56:40Speaker 4: as a group, and start to play more together in
- 56:43Speaker 4: coverage and against the run, start to get more reps
- 56:45Speaker 4: under their belt, start to see more concepts and how
- 56:47Speaker 4: teams are going to attack them. I do think that,
- 56:51Speaker 4: there is an opportunity for them to improve against the
- 56:54Speaker 4: run defense or as a run defense coverage. I think
- 56:58Speaker 4: that's the biggest one that I think can improve. They're
- 57:00Speaker 4: going to play more match coverages or they're going to
- 57:02Speaker 4: play match coverages. For those who don't know what match
- 57:05Speaker 4: coverages are, it's just rules-based.
- 57:07Speaker 1: Coverage, right?
- 57:07Speaker 4: You know, if number one does this, I do this.
- 57:10Speaker 4: If number two does this, I do this, you do that.
- 57:13Speaker 4: But everybody has to see everything at the same time
- 57:17Speaker 4: and they have to see the same thing and they
- 57:19Speaker 4: have to see the same thing at the same time.
- 57:22Speaker 4: And if you don't, that's where there's gaps. That's where
- 57:24Speaker 4: guys go running wide open. That's where two guys cover
- 57:27Speaker 4: one guy and nobody covers anybody. It's tough to get
- 57:31Speaker 4: on the same page with that when you're not playing
- 57:34Speaker 4: together all the time. In this offseason, Bernard missed time.
- 57:37Speaker 4: Dorian Williams missed time. We get into training camp. Cole
- 57:39Speaker 4: Bishop has missed some time. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson has missed some time.
- 57:42Speaker 4: Max Harrison has missed some time. Everybody's missed different buckets
- 57:46Speaker 4: of time. The starting unit that we saw in week
- 57:49Speaker 4: one on the back end Hasn't had a ton of
- 57:51Speaker 4: game reps and live bullets together. I think that has
- 57:54Speaker 4: the biggest possible uptick going forward.
- 57:56Speaker 1: The coverage.
- 57:57Speaker 4: I thought they looked pretty good in some man coverage aspects. Um,
- 58:01Speaker 4: Benford for as much as Nico was getting catches on
- 58:03Speaker 4: him left and right. I thought Benford had some good
- 58:05Speaker 4: coverage and good positioning on him on several of those.
- 58:08Speaker 4: It was just a really great throw by Stroud, really
- 58:10Speaker 4: good ball placement from him and really good catches from
- 58:12Speaker 4: Nico dude is big, long and strong and great hands.
- 58:15Speaker 4: Like you're just going to get beat. I thought Benford
- 58:17Speaker 4: had some good positioning in some aspects. Um, Um, so overall,
- 58:21Speaker 4: I don't think the week one performance defensively was good.
- 58:24Speaker 4: I do think it is correctable. The biggest thing I'm
- 58:26Speaker 4: worried about is I still think at the end of
- 58:29Speaker 4: the day, they don't have the horses up front. If
- 58:31Speaker 4: teams are going to run at them, I still don't
- 58:32Speaker 4: think they have the dudes who can hold up at
- 58:36Speaker 4: the point of attack and not get pushed around. There
- 58:38Speaker 4: were some rough reps for Dwayne Carter, um, some for
- 58:40Speaker 4: Landon Jackson. We'll see what happens with TJ Sanders going forward.
- 58:43Speaker 4: I know he missed practice today with an illness. Um, I,
- 58:47Speaker 4: you know, walker dan walker had a good game i
- 58:50Speaker 4: did a film breakdown on him um when he struggled
- 58:53Speaker 4: against the run it was just kind of some typical
- 58:55Speaker 4: things of some double teams getting him and moving him
- 58:57Speaker 4: a little bit but honestly it was more of him
- 58:59Speaker 4: kind of trying to make a play and chucking a
- 59:01Speaker 4: guy and torquing a guy and that kind of creating
- 59:04Speaker 4: a vulnerability creating a crease creating a hole creating a
- 59:07Speaker 4: gap I think that was kind of the more worrisome
- 59:11Speaker 4: aspect than it was anything else.
- 59:14Speaker 1: But I think.
- 59:17Speaker 4: There are correctable mistakes. I think the more this team
- 59:20Speaker 4: gets to play together, the more they get more time
- 59:22Speaker 4: on task together, in theory, it should go up. I
- 59:27Speaker 4: think the floor of this defense will eventually be fine.
- 59:29Speaker 4: I worry what the ceiling is. I'm still very much
- 59:32Speaker 4: in that mold, even with how they performed in week one,
- 59:35Speaker 4: whether things are correctable or not. I think the ceiling
- 59:37Speaker 4: of this defense is limited, but I do think overall
- 59:40Speaker 4: they're probably going to get to pass and run combined.
- 59:43Speaker 4: I don't think this is going to be like their
- 59:45Speaker 4: 28th and run and 29th or 31st and 32nd and
- 59:48Speaker 4: everything like they were last year. I think in totality,
- 59:51Speaker 4: not just like how it averages out, I think between
- 59:53Speaker 4: what they are in the past and the run, I
- 59:54Speaker 4: think there'll be somewhere for both. I think they'll finish
- 59:57Speaker 4: probably somewhere anywhere between like 13th and 19th, 13th and 17th.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: You'll have some weeks where, you know, that might, you know,
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: balloon up a little bit and they perform really well
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: and they have a great week or they get a
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: bunch of pressures, they get turnovers or they have a
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: good performance against the run. I think they'll have some
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: weeks where they'll get gashed and they'll give up some points.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: It's going to be a work in progress, but I
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: think the more time on tasks they get the coverage aspect,
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: I definitely expect to improve. I just don't know by
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: how much, but the more they get more time on task,
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: the more the match coverage aspect will start to gel.
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: The run defense, I still think, I do think the
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: more confidence they play with, the more they know what
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: they're seeing and how to adjust and how to respond,
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: they will perform better. But I still think they're capped
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: based on the body types they have, the positional archetypes
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: they're still subscribing to, and then just some of the
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: levels that the players have overall.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: But yeah.
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: Let's start to go through some of the comments. Andrew says,
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: I worry about the play action versus the Bills defense.
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: Dorian seems to get sucked up a lot, and that
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: could make us vulnerable to Laporta. I worry about similar
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: aspects as well. Dorian looked really good from a movement aspect.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: I feel like he slimmed down a bit, but I
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: thought he moved around well. and they're locking some coverage
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: stuff for him as well. And the guys in general.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: So I think he'll get more like simplified responsibilities, which
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: I think helps him just play to his strength and
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: his speed and allows him to just, you know, point
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: and click and attack dudes. But I do still think, yeah,
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: his eyes can get them lost a little bit. And
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Laporte is a stud. So I think that's a tough
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: matchup regardless. I, You know, even Cole Bishop, I think,
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: can match him athletically. But Laporta's got, you know, precision
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: on his side and kind of how he moves and
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: can operate with some deception. And plus the size and strength,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: even though Bishop has some size and strength. I think
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: Laporta's a tough task for most teams and most players
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: in general. And I think that holds true for this
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: matchup as well. Joshua says, how fearful are you of
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Amon Ra? Who will he get matched against, and will
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: he eat in fantasy? I do think he will eat
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: in fantasy. I think he's going to get matched up
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: against D. Alford a bunch, and then some of the linebackers,
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: depending on how in between the numbers he's running his routes.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: But I think it'll be between Alford, some of the backers,
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: and then Cole Bishop if the Bills continue to roll
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: with this high dime rate like they did in Week 1.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: For those who don't know, overall in Week 1, the—
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: Buffalo Bills defense, as I pull up my numbers. Overall,
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: they had a 22.8% dime rate. So dime, six defensive backs. 22.8%
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: dime rate in week one. That was fifth in the league.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: On third downs, they had a 61.1% dime rate, which
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: was third. So third downs and or known passing down
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: in distances situations, you're going to get dime. When that
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: was happening, Hamlin and Chauncey were the deep safeties. Cole
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: Bishop was down. sometimes operating as like a dime linebacker.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: Sometimes operating as another apex player opposite of D Alford. Um,
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: so I say all that to say, I'm on Ross
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: going to get work against Alford, the backers, and then
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: Cole Bishop. Um, I do expect him to do well,
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: and I think he'll be productive in fantasy. Adrian says,
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: it's so funny how entering the season, you were high
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: on the DBS and worried about the D line. And
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: in the game, it was the total opposite. I don't
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: necessarily think it was the total opposite. Um, you know,
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: the DBS, um, you know, and even, even with what
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: happened in the past game, it wasn't all on the DBs.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: Some of it was on the linebackers as well. And
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: I don't think the defense really, I mean, the defensive
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: line got pushed around a bunch and got run on
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: a bit. Some of the pressure metrics were nice and
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: they did have some big moments when it came to pressures.
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: And obviously, you know, I think multiple sacks, some forced
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: fumbles in that regard, but I did think CJ Stroud
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: had a lot of time to operate from the pocket
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: and And let's see, overall on the week, the Bills were, oof, yeah,
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: I was going to say, from a team defense perspective, overall,
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: the Bills per next gen were last in the league
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: in week one in pressure rate at 21.4% pressure rate,
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: which is not ideal. And then they were 17th in
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: average time to pressure at 2.77 seconds, so almost three. Um, no,
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: not three to get literally between two and a half
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: and three, almost a two and a quarter. Uh, but yeah,
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: they had a 21.4% pressure rate in week one, which
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: was 32nd. So I don't think, I don't think the
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: D line had some stud performance. I think Walker had
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: some nice moments. Rousseau had some nice moments. I think
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: that Oliver had a better game than is kind of
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: showing up on the stat sheet. He had a couple
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: of real nice rushes, uh, mainly against Ed Ingram, who
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: got worked by Dion Walker as well, kind of showing
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: back to his, uh, Minnesota days where he was just
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: giving up pressures left and right. But I think the
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: DB stuff is tied to the linebackers. I think it's
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: more just match coverage things. I'm still higher on the
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: DBs than I am the D line. And I don't
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: think the D line had a, had a stud game.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: They got moved around some in.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: The run game along with the front in general, but
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: they got moved around a bit in the run game.
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: And then they did not, they don't front didn't have
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: a high pressure rate. So I don't think I necessarily
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: played it out that way, but I, I do see
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: the thought of how that kind of came from.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Greenlight says it's all about communication. It will get better. Laura,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: what's up, Laura? Laura says, I'm afraid I'm late at
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: no worries. She says, however, uh, there are two schools
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: of thought. I'm Max worried or not worried thoughts. I'm
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: still in the middle.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: I I'm not, I'm not worried. Um, I think he's
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: still a guy who's learning. He had a rookie season
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: where he didn't really have a full rookie season. He
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: got hurt at the end. He was hurt at the beginning.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: He's still learning. Um, You know, I think it's kind
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: of six of one, half a dozen of the other
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: between him and Igbenosin. I would probably take Max over
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: Igbenosin at this point, although Igbenosin had that really great
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: pass breakup on that third and two. And I do
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: trust Igbenosin more as a tackler and coming forward. I'm
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: not going to say worried. I'm still where I am
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: on him, which is I'm like, meh. And I don't
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: mean to say that as a cop out, but I
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: was that way when he came out of Kentucky. I
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: liked some of his traits and his skill set pieces,
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: but I thought he you know, he had to work
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: more in man coverage than was getting talked about. And
- 1:06:24Speaker 4: I thought his tackling was a concern just because of
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: his size and frame and angles and how little margin
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: for error that he had. And I still think all
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: of those things are present within his game. So I'm
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: still in the same boat. So I actually, no, I
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: would lean more towards not worried because I still feel
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: the same as I did before where he is right
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: now for me, it's still kind of par for the course.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: So I'm not worried.
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: Space Coast Mafia says, do you think we will see
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: some Hancock this week? I would, I'm not trying to
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: open this can of worms or Pandora's box here, but
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: I would rather see Jordan Hancock as a dime DB
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: and the dime safety than I would DeMar Hamlin just
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: at this point. But I do think Hamlin presents a
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: high floor. This is a conversation we've had for years.
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: I think Hamlin does provide a high floor. Just, I
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: would like to see something else. I would like more juice,
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: more athleticism, something that offers you some playmaking ability. And
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: I thought Hancock showed well in the preseason. Granted, preseason
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: is not regular season. And his role in the regular
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: season last year was very, very, very siloed in terms
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: of what they asked him and what he did. So
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: even though he's a second-year player, he's still more of
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: a rookie than he is a true second-year player when
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: it comes to time on task and game experience. Though
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: he did play in games, his role was just so
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: limited and siloed. I don't think we're going to see
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: Hancock yet, but I would like to. Greenlight says Montgomery,
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: 20 rushes for 60 yards is pretty good. I think
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: we need to get off of the notion of, you know,
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: just how many like yards per carry being the only
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: metric of that. You know, he had 20 for 60.
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: Woody Marks had, I think that's a big one too.
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: Like people point to the Montgomery. He's like, oh, he
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: had like 20 for 60, but then Woody Marks had
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: nine for 42. Stroud counts in that as well at
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: two for 15. But Marks had some chunks. Montgomery had some.
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: And then from a run defense standpoint as well, The
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: Bills also gave up four runs of 10 yards or more,
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: which on the week is 21st.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Dive for 21st.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: They did have a high, if I'm correct, stuff rate,
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: which are runs of zero or less yards. They had
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: a stuff rate of 25%. So we saw some negative
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: play generation. We saw some guys penetrate, get into the backfield,
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: make some tackles for loss, make some tackles for no gain,
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: which was nice to see. Also, from a run defense standpoint,
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: they were 14th in rush yards over expected. per attempt.
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: Yards after contact per attempt. Let's see, where were they
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: at there? They were 13th, so much better than they
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: were last year. Not a great number at two and
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: a half yards, but much better than they were last year, which...
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: was I think 3.93 and was last in the league.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: So not good at all.
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: But yeah, if you're looking at rushing yards per play allowed,
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: they were pretty decent on the week. They finished 11th
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: at that 3.9 yards allowed per rush.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Which was 11th.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: But if you look at the advanced metrics, some of
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: the situational stuff, I do think it speaks to them
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: needing to improve again, watching the tape. I think it's
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: more correctable stuff than it is like, Oh God, everything's
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: on fire, but I still think they're, They need to
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: correct that stuff, but then also they're still going to
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: have problems at the point of attack with people. But
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: you've got to dance with who brought you, and they
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: brought the same people as they did before, essentially. Zesty says,
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: I feel a lot better about Benford after watching the All-22.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: Really like the physicality in the second half. Yeah, he
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: had some good coverage reps. And again, even the ones
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: where Nico got the ball, Benford was on him in
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: some spots. Cole Bishop was on Nico in a good spot,
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: but it was just some good ball placement. from Stroud,
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: some good catches, um, from Nico. And sometimes you just
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: got to tip your cap and say, dude, got it.
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: And kind of is what it is at points. Charles says,
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: I like the tackling spacing and aggressiveness. I don't love
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: the tackling. They had a higher missed tackle rate than
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: I'd like, um, overall, but it can improve. Um, I
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: think also some of the two is you have smaller
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: frame dudes at the second level, you know, or, and
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: if you're not taking angles, right. Or you are getting
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: pushed around, like you have to play around blocks. You
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: have to play around bigger guys that you're getting shoulders
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: and arms on guys. And then you're bouncing off dudes.
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: And especially like a guy like Montgomery who can break tackles,
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: even what he marks to a degree. I think if
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: they clean up their fits and their positioning, it will
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: lead to better tackling. I don't think they have the
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: best individual tacklers, but, But I do think if they
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: clean up their run fits and the structure of it,
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: that will lead to better positioning, better bodies.
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Around the football.
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: The tackling will get better. And, yeah, some of the
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: coverage stuff, I think some of the spacing was nice.
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: I did like some of the aggressiveness as well. But, yeah,
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: to your point, still young, not enough difference makers. I
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: agree on both of those completely. They are young, and
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: I don't think they have enough difference makers. But I
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: think with Leonard, he can get him to a high
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: enough floor where the defense is not a vulnerability. I
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: think this is a re-comment from before, so I guess
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: we're just commenting the same thing.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Laura says, Dan Campbell is the most go-for-it coach I've
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: ever seen.
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: Yeah, he's absolutely a maniac when it comes to that,
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: when it comes to anything. Going for it on fourth down.
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: Ultra aggressive and a good coach. Steve says, hoping Hancock's
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: injury status is the reason why he's not playing. Trust
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: the youth when he is healthy.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: That's fair. Steve says lions being possibly down to starting
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: tackling guard could be helpful for our defensive line.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: 1000%.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: And I will take all the help we can get. Um,
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: if they are down multiple dudes on the interior, even
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: if Blake Miller's down, that's helpful for the bills. Um,
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: I am worried about this lion's offense.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: They're good, man. Like they've been good for years. They
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: were good with Ben Johnson. They're good.
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: Now pet sing had success against the bills when he
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: was with the Cardinals a couple of years ago in
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Buffalo in week one. Um, I think they have the
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: capability to kind of run through the Bills a bit
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: and to pass through the Bills. And that's not necessarily
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: a knock against the Bills. The Lions have a really
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: good offense. Like, Jared Goff has been a good quarterback
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: in that scheme and in that system. Amon Ra is sweet.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: J-Mo is sweet. Laporte is sweet. Gibbs is awesome. Like,
- 1:12:44Speaker 4: they got a bunch of horses on that offense. So
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: I would take any. Anybody being out would be helpful
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: for the Bills, 1,000%. Andrew says, would you rather see
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: Shaq than Dorian at this point? I would, yes. I
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: just trust Shaq more. He's seen a lot of football.
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: I think he understands where to be and how to be.
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: That being said, I would rather see Shaq. I don't
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: think Dorian Williams is bad. I just think he's more
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: of a You know, if you're a team starting two linebackers,
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: I think Dorian is more of a linebacker three than
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: he is a solid starting linebacker two. I think Shaq
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: is probably a low end two or a higher end three.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: And I just trust all the football that he's seen
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: being in the right place at the right time. I
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: still think he has enough movement. I mean, let me backtrack.
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: I haven't seen him really this year. But based off
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: of what he was last year, if he is that again,
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: or similar to that, yes, I would rather see Shaq
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: than Dorian. But again, that being said, I don't think
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: the gap is huge between them. And I don't think
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Dorian played bad in week one.
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: So he says, thinking about a blown coverage on JMO
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: sends a shiver down my spine.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: I mean, a blown coverage on any of their dudes,
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: like they can all fly. Like if you, and that's,
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: what's tough too, with even like the run at the
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: run game aspect. Like if you're not sound, in your
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: run fit against your mere Gibbs, he's gone.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: And it's not like, Oh, he's gone for 10 yards.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: He's gone for a house call.
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: If you miss a tackle house call, if you've got
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: two guys in the same gap house call, like, and
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: you're living with that in the past game as well.
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: Like I'm on rock and move. I know he doesn't
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: have the long speed that JMO has, but Tesla can move.
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: Like they got some dudes who could scoot, man, obviously
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: headlined by JMO who, if yeah, if you get caught
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: in a blitz at the wrong time and they kick
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: it out to JMO on a smoke screen or a tunnel.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: Oh boy.
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: Let alone him just, running by somebody, um, completely, which yeah,
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: Charles says shootout incoming Thursday night games used to be
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: like automatic shootouts because like it's a short week and
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: it's wonky. And then I feel like last year kind
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: of turned into like Thursday night games were automatic, like
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: low scoring and kind of sloppy. Thursday night games are
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: always wonky, man. Guys aren't healthy and they're not recovered
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: from the game a couple of days before. It's week
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: two guys aren't in game shape yet. They're probably extra
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: sore and extra tired from playing in week one.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: It's a short week. Both defenses have question.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: I do expect a shootout, but then again, I expected
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: a lower scoring game in week one and it ended
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: up being a shootout.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Actually JP and I even joked about that.
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: I think on the show of being like, you know,
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: we're expecting 23, 17, 23, 20, watch it be like 45, 41.
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: And look what it ended up being. But I do
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: expect high scoring. I expect like 30 to 27. I
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: expect 35 to 30, um, something like that. I expect
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: touchdowns and, uh, both offenses kind of gunning for one
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: another back and forth, kind of similar to, um, um,
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: the game in Detroit a couple of years ago. Granted,
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: like I know the bills had the lead and then
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: Detroit came back and chucked it around and ended, I
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: think it was like 48, 42 maybe. Um, but yeah, I,
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: I do expect, I expect points.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: I expect points. RJ says, yes, they need to bring
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: up Shaq for this game. Fair.
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: More. He says, everybody going to expect the 48 for, Oh,
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: so it was 40.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: Okay. Well, yeah, I think we're talking about the same deal.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: I think it was 48, 42. Every came where he says,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: everybody going.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: To expect the 48, 42 barn burner, like a few
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: years ago, but it's definitely 21, 17. So that's exactly
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: what it'll be. And get Gibbs and cook will combine
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: for like 60 rushing yards. And Alan and golf will
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: combine for like 300 passing yards. And it'll be sloppy
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: and defensive filled. And that's how it'll be. Cause that's
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: just how it always works. Chad says, I thought our
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: tackling was great. Was Leonard the one stressing the tackling
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: in Denver? Because their tackling was awful.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I mean, it's week one. We'll see kind of what happens.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: I actually fell asleep early last night and missed a
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: good chunk of Denver and Kansas City. But the Bills tackling,
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: I mentioned it earlier, and I'm going to grab it
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: again right now. I don't think the Bills tackling... overall
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: was great in week one um let's see versus the
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: run the bills were i put in the chat earlier
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: but i'm grabbing it from everything now uh overall against
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: the run last week or in week one the bills
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: were 27th and missed tackle rate uh they missed eight
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: tackles oh wait no they missed seven tackles against the
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: run for a 19.4 percent miss rate so they were
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: 27th um, in missed tackle rate against the run in
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: week one overall, they were 13th in missed tackle rate, uh,
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: at 13%. So that means their missed tackle rate against
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: the past must've been pretty good. Um, um, uh, missed
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: tackle rate of 11.4 against the past, which was good
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: enough for 12th. Um, so work in progress against the
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: run better against the past. So near top 10 overall,
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: which is fair. Um, but a work in progress against
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: the run from a mistackling perspective. I also too think
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: week one, offensively, defensively, not just for the Bills, week
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: one is a lie.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: If we're going off week one, the Houston Texans defense
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: is going to be terrible this year. I don't think
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: that's going to end up being the case, just for
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: that example. I don't think Kansas City's defense is going
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: to be as lights out as it was. I think
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: the Chargers will somewhat right the ship. I don't think
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: the Cardinals are going to do what they did all
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: the time in week one.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: Um, but we'll see.
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: I'm always has got to take the good with the
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: bad with the Dorian with Dorian.
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: You do. And again, I think he's improved. I think
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: there is more good than there was last year. And
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: the year before he's improved every year. I still just
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: think he's more of a linebacker three than he is
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: even a low tier two. Copy says who you got winning.
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: I am far too superstitious to do predictions, but I
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: respect you asking. Connor says it would feel really billsy
- 1:19:05Speaker 4: if we somehow give up 31 points to Houston, but
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: hold the lines to under 30.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Yes, it would.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: And it would be more billsy to hold the lines
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: under 30 and then lose. Green lights is first to
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: 40 wins.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: Connor says first.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: To 50 wins with an asterisk. That's fair.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: Uh, Zesty says, how would you evaluate all first performance? Um,
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: I do think, let's see from a coverage standpoint, I
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: don't think he was bad at all. Um, He and
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: Bernard had a miscommunication on that one pass over the
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: middle to Xavier Hutchinson where Woody Marks was also wide open.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: I think that was one of the ones at the
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: end of the first half, I think. But other than that,
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: I thought he was pretty sound. Had some good man
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: coverage reps. Had some good match coverage reps. I think
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: he's a sound corner. He's got good spatial awareness. He
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: knows what he's doing. I think he's got good spatial recognition.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: He understands everything. where to be and how to leverage routes.
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: He had a couple good man coverage reps. So I
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: think Alford was fine. I don't think he was a hole.
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: I don't think he was bad. I don't think he
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: was a huge plus player and a difference maker. But
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: I don't think he was bad in any way, shape,
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: or form. So I thought Alford was fine.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: Good.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Perfectly, I don't mean this to sound negative or like
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: a backhanded compliment, a perfectly good nickel performance, which is fine.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: And I don't mean fine like it's fine. I mean like, yeah, good, fine.
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: RJ says there's no way the bills tackling was as
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: bad as Denver's last night was the worst tackling I've
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: ever seen in the NFL. No, it wasn't as bad
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: as Denver's, but it's still against the run still was
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: not good. Like you can be better than Denver's tackling
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: was and still also be not good. Like getting, getting
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: punched in the eye is better than getting stabbed in
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: the eye, but both of them are not good. And
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: I would rather not have either or, and just Denver
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: got stabbed in the eye. The bills got punched in
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: the eye. So yeah, I'd rather get punched and stabbed,
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: but either is still not great.
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: But fair point. to Denver's tackling. Actually, if let's, uh,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: where are we here? Let's see.
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: Bah, bah, bah. Overall, Denver had the highest missed tackle
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: rate of week one at 27.5%. Uh, 7.5 percentage points
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: higher than the bears and Jags who were tied for 30th, uh,
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: at 20%.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: So really rough.
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: So the worst overall missed tackle rate belonged to Denver
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: in week one. Uh, they had the second worst missed
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: tackle rate against the run at 24.4%. So five percentage
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: points worse than the Bills there. And then their missed
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: tackling against the pass, they were 27th at 18.2%. So yeah,
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: really bad performance from tackling for Denver.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Across the board. Rough, rough, rough, rough, rough. K.
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: Morris said Denver had worse tackling than in the 70-20 loss.
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: I think it was bottom 10 tackling performance this decade. Oh, man,
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: I can't even imagine what their missed tackling was in
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: that 70-20 game.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: I just remember.
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: like four guys being on the ground and Devon a
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: Chan just running for, for days and days.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: It was so bad.
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: Zesty says not bills related, but man watching Devin Witherspoon
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: blitz is a thing of beauty. Absolutely is one of
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: my favorite things. I even have a thread of it
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: on social is watching the end zone angle of his
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: blitzes because he just comes completely off camera. Like you're
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: watching the end zone view that's shown the box and
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: out of nowhere on the snap, Devin Witherspoon just comes
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: like zooming into the frame and he shoots a gap
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: or blow somebody up or levels the quarterback or heats
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: him up and still hits him.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: It's one of the most fun. He's one of the
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: most fun players in football.
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: Dude is an absolute velociraptor in every way, shape and form.
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: He is the prototypical example of when I, I've been
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: using that word for years. I started using it first
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: with the 49ers defense because of how Fred Warner and
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: Dre Greenlaw played and Witherspoon plays like that.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: Just, as a DB and he can cover on top
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: of it. Just an absolute monster. So fun. Yeah. Witherspoon
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: is sick. One of the most fun players to watch
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: in football.
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: Steve says, can we just please burn the PFF grades?
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: I guess I just do. I just do not see
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: a game like that crew does. I don't pay attention
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: to PFF grades. I haven't really ever. I don't know
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: if this is in reference to something specific or something
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: that happened recently. Did the bills get bad PFF grades
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: or did somebody get bad PFF grades? I apologize if
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: I'm out of the loop on this conversation, but PFF grades,
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: no disrespect, have been meaningless to me for years.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: I think PFF's metrics are awesome.
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: Everything else that they do in terms of the advanced
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: metrics and the availability of it for years, in terms
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: of what they do with coverage rates and any advanced
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: metric data I can't even get like, but EPA stuff,
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: success rate stuff, yards per route run, like pass rush,
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: win rate and pressure rate. And, uh, you know, all
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: this stuff, unblock pressures and how they, how they tie
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: in everything. I mean, there's a reason why NFL teams
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: use next gen and they also use PFF.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: I still believe as well. Um, but yeah, they, uh,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: I don't subscribe to the grades.
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: I don't, I never have just cause I think it's
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: a really arbitrary in terms of what their process is.
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: I still don't even know what the process is, but,
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: I also don't, too, and this isn't even a knock
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: against PFF. I just I subscribe to my own things
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: better for worse. I'm the same thing come come draft season.
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: I don't pay attention to anyone else's draft board. I
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: bury my head in the sand until I put together
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: my own top 125 or top 150. And then I
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: come up and then I see who other people had.
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: So I've never subscribed to anyone else's grades. literally or figuratively,
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: and definitely not PFFs. But I think the rest of
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: their data suite or center, whatever they call it, I
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: think is fantastic. Greenlight says, you think they'll keep elevating
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: Dortch in the next two games so they have to
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: sign with the 53?
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Yes, I do. Just because they don't have another answer
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: anywhere else.
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: Zesty says, pretty sure Caleb Williams got graded the 20th
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: best QB performance or something like.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: That by PFF, that is.
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: Oof.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: That's harsh.
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: Oh, so that probably started a whole wildfire of conversation today.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: I can imagine that. I'm going to have to go
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: back and check on social. That's crazy. Charles says, Malachi
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: Tony the Bills in 2027 manifested now.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: If I can manifest that now, are you kidding me?
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Hell yeah. Sign me up right now. I have no
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: questions asked. That's it.
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: RJ says somehow Josh having 77 per week completion percentage
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: and eight out of 13 and a half and four
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: TDs can net you an average PFF grade demonstrate ever.
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: I don't know. As he says, Charles, I might tear
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: up if that happens. Um, RJ saying PFF also hates Saibo.
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: I don't think they've, I mean, I don't know what
- 1:25:40Speaker 4: they graded him, but I do know like his, his
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: past blocking metrics were bad. Um, last year in terms
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: of pressures given up and like how much he got beat. Um,
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: And I don't think that's necessarily a PFF grade thing.
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: That's just more of like, are you giving up a pressure?
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: Yes or no.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Now you could put it up there and say like,
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: maybe they're charting him.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: In certain ways. And like, they're, you know, attributing pressures
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: to him. That might not be his fault, yada, yada.
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: But I do know his pass, his pass blocking, not grades,
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: but just like efficiency rates, which are all just how
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: many pass rushing pass blocking snaps do you have versus
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: pressures given up? sacks given up and how that correlates
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: um i know his his numbers weren't great there and
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: i don't think that's necessarily pff thing i do think
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: it was somewhat fair especially based on what the table
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: is but when it comes to pure grades i have
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: no idea i've never paid attention to a pff grade
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: in years um but.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Yeah i've never paid attention to their grades.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: I also i mean i also think people also use
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: them arbitrarily like the pff grades suck if they say
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: your guy is bad and then if they're great somebody
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: wants to cite them and use them and be like.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Look what his grade was so i'm gonna say.
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: Charles says, Gino and Brissette, I think we're high up
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: on PFFs. I mean, I got to watch the Cardinals
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: offense tape, but I think they had a good week,
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: so maybe that's not crazy.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: Kevin says, hopefully the Bills defense gets better the more
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: they play this new system. I do think that will happen.
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: I just don't know by how much. I don't think
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: they're going to get better to the point where they
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: become a top 10 defense, but I think they will
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: get better overall to a defense that is across DVOA, EPA,
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: and success rate run and pass. And in totality, I
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: think they'll end up somewhere between 14 and 19 this year.
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: And I think they'll end up being a team that,
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: I mean, week one, they gave up 31 points. So
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: it's not a great start, but I think from a
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: points given up per game perspective, even though that's not
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: also like a holistic aspect of way or a way
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: to look at, I think they'll end up being a
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: defense that gives up around 25 points a game when
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: you average it all out, which I think will be
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: fine on in totality and, or, and, or on the whole.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Speaking of on the whole.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: Getting yourself a whole half sheet, quarter sheet pizza from
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: one pie pizza is one of the best decisions you
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: could make this week. One pie pizza, the best pizza
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: in Buffalo. I don't say that because they sponsored the show.
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: They sponsored the show because I sincerely believe they are
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: the best pizza in Buffalo. The bills play Thursday night.
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: We all know this. There would be nothing better.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Sincerely. And I'm saying this because this is exactly what
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I'm going to do. There would be nothing better.
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: Than getting yourself some one pie pizza before that bills game.
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: You're going to go to work, get out of work.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: Before you go home, get yourself some one pie pizza.
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: Maybe you're taking off for the day. Get yourself some
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: one pie pizza. Maybe you're going to the game and
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: you're taking off on Friday. Enjoy your day off on
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: Friday with some one pie pizza. I am extremely excited.
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: I was going to get it for last week, week one.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: And then I was like, you know what? No, like
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: I'm going to get it for Thursday night opener. So
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: I'm excited to get myself some one pie pizza this week.
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: You should be too. Sweet sauce pie, cup of charred pepperoni,
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: creative different toppings and pizza options. They do different sizing options.
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: They sprinkle.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: The toppings evenly across the pie. If you're getting stuff,
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: they'll chop them up and give even distribution, really good
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: cheese to sauce ratio. I know that might sound foolish
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: to some, but I hate pizzas where you bite and
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: then the cheese comes off or it's always falling apart
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: or it's, it's like, uh, kind of charred a little
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: bit and you feel like it's hardened and you're picking
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: it off or it just doesn't feel great. It doesn't
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: have a good texture or taste. They tick the box
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: in every way, shape and form. And that might not
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: even be the best thing they do. Their homemade blue
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: cheese is absolutely phenomenal. So get yourself some one pie pizza, uh,
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: They also have a catering division called Elevated Catering of Buffalo.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: Phenomenal non-pizza food.
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: Through there, but you can also combine some pizza with
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: that stuff. If you get stuff from the catering division,
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: they do a really good breakfast pie. They are sincerely
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: one of the best things I've ever eaten in my
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: entire life and the best pizza in Buffalo, New York.
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: So get yourself some one-pie pizza. If you're coming into
- 1:29:51Speaker 4: town for the game, you're coming in during the day,
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: get yourself some one-pie before you head to the stadium
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: for tailgating or whatever You know, if you're heading back
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: out on Friday, get yourself some one pie before you
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: head out. You will not be disappointed. Get yourself some
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: one pie pizza. Really good people making really good food.
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: And I say really good people because of all the
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: initiatives and kindness that they have and give and share
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: and show.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Towards the city of Buffalo.
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: Partnering with Roswell, partnering with the SBCA, the Alzheimer's Foundation,
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: Toys for Tots, which is right around the corner in
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: a couple months for the holidays. They just give back.
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: And that's aside from making great food, which is already
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: kind of good enough. So get yourself some one pie pizza.
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: the best in Buffalo, New York. I'm throwing up the
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: banners as to those folks. Cause we were going to
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: start to wind down and say goodbye. If there was
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: anything that I did not get to in this episode,
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: I apologize. Put it into the comments here on YouTube.

- 1:30:50Speaker 4: N T.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: I'll be folks.
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: Enjoyed this episode. As I mentioned in the intro, I
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: dropped a film breakdown of Deion Walker yesterday, breaking down
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: seven of his plays, four run defense snaps, three pass
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: rush snaps, tied in some plays from some other players
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: in the game in week one, tied in some front
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: structure stuff and some mechanics and some schematic things. So
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: a good breakdown, I think, at least. So if you
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: want to see some of that, some film of the
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: Bills defense of Deion Walker, check that out. Also on
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: the Disguise Coverage YouTube channel, just like this episode is.
