- 1:42now, what you're going to do now? Thank you so much.
- 1:49I missed the days before you were on the show. I have to refer
- 1:53to those as the golden times. Why nobody listened to them? So yeah,
- 2:00oh man, but yeah, welcome to the Girl app Episode thirty nine.
- 2:05What are we talking about today? We got a couple of things on
- 2:07the agenda, of course, we're going to have on this day in wrestling
- 2:10history. Later on we're gonna talk about the main event. We have a
- 2:13lot to cover in the main event, a lot of local shows going on
- 2:16this upcoming weekend. Everyone decided to do it all this weekend. It's the
- 2:21first week of June. You know what, I'm glad. I'm glad that
- 2:27local wrestling is picking up, absolutely, you know. It warms my heart.
- 2:31But that could also be the cholester on blood pressure, right, I
- 2:36don't know, fair enough, fair enough, so but yeah, no,
- 2:39we're going to talk about that first thing that we're going we are blood pressure.
- 2:43No, no, no, I'll talk about your blood pressure. Okay,
- 2:45good, I don't want to talk about that. No, I don't
- 2:46want to be Yeah, I'm sorry, that's okay. I'll live. But
- 2:53on one topic that I have been wanting to cover on the show for quite
- 2:57a while is video games merchandising. I mean, that's that's a big part
- 3:00of merchandising with professional wrestling, especially ww like they've they have kind of cornered
- 3:06that market a little bit, kind of it's kind of been their own thing
- 3:08for a long time. But yeah, and everybody here, everybody that is
- 3:15a professional wrestling fan, not well, mostly most professional wrestling fans have had
- 3:20some type of experience with a wrestling video game, whether that be No Mercy
- 3:24sixty four, SmackDown, Here Comes to Pain, smack Down, Shut your
- 3:29Mouth, the new two K games. You also have Fire Pro Wrestling on
- 3:34PlayStation. You have the old Arcade games with the with your your old school
- 3:38WWF wrest yep, yep. So yeah, that's just that's one thing that
- 3:45I have wanted to discuss on here because it helps you when you're a kid
- 3:51and you got your favorite wrestler. It's really cool that you can pull up
- 3:54you can play video game, and you can play as your favorite wrestler.
- 3:57Yeah, so that is kind of it's it's kind of a cool thing for
- 4:01me. One of the first video games, and to me, one of
- 4:05the greatest wrestling video games of all time that I played as a child is
- 4:10SmackDown Here Comes to Pain. Yeah, with Brack Klesner on the cover.
- 4:15I just it was just to me, it was just so cool playing playing
- 4:19it. You want to I think that game now on eBay goes for about
- 4:27ninety dollars. Really, you only kind of sold it for that much.
- 4:31Do you have one? I used to Oh, man, I still do.
- 4:34I'll get into it just a minute. So yeah you could, uh,
- 4:38I mean, I guess technically you could put that on eBay and make
- 4:41about make close to one hundred dollars off of it. It just I don't
- 4:46know, maybe, and the graphics were cool. I think they had shut
- 4:50Shut your mouth before that. That was right after WWE went went from w
- 4:56F to WWE. Everybody talks about Mersey sixty four. Yeah, that is
- 5:02to some people, that is the number one wrestling video game of all time.
- 5:06And also from my understanding, it's been modeled a lot. Yeah,
- 5:11you can have current wrestlers in it. Yeah, like that's that's kind of
- 5:15that. That is a big thing that a lot of people do with it.
- 5:18And also apparently, according to Kenny Omega, this that that engine that
- 5:24they used the No No Mercy sixty four. Maybe it was the engine,
- 5:28it was something to do. They took inspiration from No Mercy sixty four and
- 5:31brought that to AW Fight Forever, Yeah, which from what I've heard,
- 5:35I haven't played the game, but from what I've heard it has not had
- 5:39very good reviews. Yeah. I haven't played Fight Forever. Yeah, no
- 5:43I have to. I have not. I just have an engine wrestling game
- 5:46in general, because I've just gotten out of wrestling games, or not wrestling,
- 5:49it's just fighting games in general. Oh really, Yeah, I don't
- 5:53know. Just I can play for a little bit at the story moon and
- 5:56I'm just done. Do you just just lose interest? Yeah? Pretty much?
- 6:00Fair enough? But is it just too repetitive? I think so?
- 6:05Okay, I mean it makes sense like a I don't know, Jeff,
- 6:11So You're was your first wrestling game experience? Here comes the Pain? Oh?
- 6:15Yeah, yeah that was my That was my very first one. What
- 6:17about you, josh? Ah? It might have been on Nintendo sixty four
- 6:24WCWNW Revenge. Oh god, such a good one. Yeah. I also
- 6:29really enjoyed WCWNWO Versus the World was that on sixty four, Yes I was
- 6:34sixty four. But my first show in my age here. My first wrestling
- 6:40game experience was WWF WrestleMania from nineteen eighty nine on the original NES. You're
- 6:46old, I know I played one on SUPERNA. I can't remember what it's
- 6:50called. Yeah, you see. One of my favorite wrestling games of all
- 6:56time, though, isn't even a WWF or wc EW or a New Japan
- 7:00or anything. It's Tecmo Pro Wrestling from the NES. Is that the same
- 7:08same people that made Tech Mobile? Possibly I have not heard anything about this
- 7:14one. Please do tagle, sir. It was just a fun game.
- 7:18One of the moves that you could do was the big Swing and you could
- 7:21throw them out of the ring. But one wrestler individual, I don't remember
- 7:27his name off the top of my head, but my brother and I would
- 7:30get in fights over who got to play as this guy because his finisher was
- 7:34a Tiger suplex like a Tiger driver. Nope, sorry, dragon suplex.
- 7:42Oh okay, yeah, okay, And you just you couldn't kick out of
- 7:45it. You just couldn't kick out brilliantly. So it was just it was
- 7:49overpowered a little bit. Oh yeah, oh this is before. This is
- 7:54long before the days of patch notes coming in and nerfing things. Yeah,
- 8:00all of the elden Ring people out there, I'm looking at you, Rivers
- 8:03of Blood. But I mean I also have a wide collection of pro wrestling
- 8:09video games. So, speaking of collections, I was a very big fan
- 8:13of what is currently now the two K series. Before that it was just
- 8:18WWE, and before that it was Smack Numbers a roll. Before that it
- 8:20was SmackDown. Yeah, it's a long series, but yeah, I started
- 8:24back that with what was it, Know Your Role I think on PS two
- 8:28or Shut Your Mouth one of two ye, shut shut your Mouth was right
- 8:31before. Yeah, so I had those. I had Here Comes to Pain,
- 8:37and I had every game up through Smack Numbers Rot until twenty ten.
- 8:41Then that's when I kind of just got out of fighting games in general.
- 8:43Then I got back. I had two K fourteen and two K eighteen,
- 8:48so I had a big collection of that series for a while there. My
- 8:54brother he actually has he has a PlayStation two and he has a lot of
- 8:58the old Smack versus role games. Yeah, he even has oh what is
- 9:03it? I think it's w C W nWo Revenge for PS one. I
- 9:11had. There was w W Thunder on PS one. It's it's not Thunder.
- 9:15It is a w C I can't remember. Maybe it is Revenge.
- 9:18It is a w CW game on PlayStation one. I know that he bought
- 9:22it, ironically enough, because my brother is this kind of he's very good
- 9:28at bartering. He doesn't give himself enough credit. But I wouldn't mean that.
- 9:31It was only sixty four. Oh, it was, there was some
- 9:33it was it's some game on on It's not It's not Thunder though it's on
- 9:37PlayStation one. I cannot remember what the name of it is. I think
- 9:41it may be w C W nWo. It does kind of fit the time
- 9:46because that was was it Mayhem? Oh no, no, no, no,
- 9:50it was Nitro. It was Nitro. I did play it about a
- 9:54year or so ago. It was It was rather interesting. But uh yeah,
- 10:01no SmackDown when when I remember, I do remember when SmackDown versus Roll
- 10:05first came out. That was a big deal and the music in it was
- 10:09awesome. They had a lot of licensed music in it from what I remember.
- 10:15In that World's Good Lode. Yeah, by what was it power Man
- 10:18five thousand. Yeah, and fun fun fact about them, the front man
- 10:22for power Man five thousand is the little brother to Rob Zombie. Yeah.
- 10:28So you know, just a little little interesting fact there for you. Useless
- 10:31information, but it's it's there. Yeah. No, when World's Collide that
- 10:37that theme song just fit that game perfectly. You know, you got Vins
- 10:41on the cover with the one eye as blue, one eye as red.
- 10:43They really played up the SmackDown versus raw concept of the game. So it
- 10:52Yeah, but my favorite still is SmackDown Here comes to Pain. I don't
- 10:56know why. There's just a charge, there's a charm to it. I
- 11:00will say that's probably my favorite the whole series. Yeah, like it just
- 11:03I just I cannot exactly explain it. It just is. I've played all
- 11:09the two K games, well not all of them, I played a vast
- 11:11majority of them. They're great games for me. I think, like the
- 11:15graphics of the time are really good. Yes, the gameplay was just very
- 11:18smooth and very hard hitting, and like today, it's very simulated. It's
- 11:24not so much a fighting game anymore. It's more simulation. And that was
- 11:28really a fighting game, and you could also you could go and like you
- 11:33weren't limited strictly to the to the arena. You could move yourself around backstage.
- 11:41You can go back to the offices, you can even go out to
- 11:45the you can even go out to the streets and do do a dive off
- 11:50of like a off of some marquee somewhere onto onto the wrestler that is sitting
- 11:56laying on like a on like a car. And then when they do this,
- 12:00like in real life, you would be dead, okay, which is
- 12:01be honest, you'd be dead if you did this in real life. But
- 12:03like it's it's hilarious because they would jump off of their I think this is
- 12:07here comes to paint or shut your mouth. It's one of them that come
- 12:09off they land on the car and the car would explode and disappear. Okay,
- 12:13yeah, and then the then the wrestler that your opponents still laying there.
- 12:16But yeah, it's just it just kind of thanos delete just out of
- 12:22nowhere with a little mini explosion. Also, you could dave off of like
- 12:24the production trucks and stuff. There was a lot more variety. But one
- 12:28thing that I do think that does help wrestling video games these days, and
- 12:33it's kind of it sort of was starting with Smack then Versus role not not
- 12:37the first one, but later on is creat a wrestler. I know it's
- 12:41been in other other ones, but I'm talking about like online play of people
- 12:46sharing their creative wrestlers and also the fact that people get very detailed with them
- 12:50sometimes. Yeah, it's that's one of my favorite things about wrestling games anymore,
- 12:56is just creating wrestlers. Yeah, but I mean it's it's been in
- 13:01wrestling games for a long time. Yeah, I kind of realized that after
- 13:05I said it. I'm mainly talking about like like online creator share, like
- 13:09like people just just sharing their creations. I can't tell you how many different
- 13:13versions of different versions of Kenny Omega I had on two K before they did
- 13:18the online share. Like people would like post the specs of how to create
- 13:22them, like specifically the exact measurement of their face and whatever and tattoos,
- 13:26and I would do it a lot with like T and A wrestlers back in
- 13:28the two thousands. I did that once with Adam Baum for it was I
- 13:35want to say the Legends of WrestleMania one where then you could if you played
- 13:46like Smack dun Versus were All two thousand and nine. That entire roster would
- 13:50then be a part of your WrestleMania game as well. Wow, is that
- 13:56the Is that the game where they were a lot more tuney? No,
- 14:01that was WWE All Stars the Legends of WrestleMania one. It was kind of
- 14:07cartoony, but not as like you aren't jumping twenty feet up in the air.
- 14:13The thing that I didn't like about it is in order to the finisher,
- 14:18it had this sequence of pretty much like quick quick button things, like
- 14:26a like a like a mini game almost kind of Okay, actually I did
- 14:33play this. I remember this now. Yeah, not to be confused with
- 14:37Legends of Wrestling, which is another game all of it, another trilogy of
- 14:46games all on its own, which had a great roster, but not really
- 14:52anyone looked like anyone they said it was supposed to and it was super repetitive.
- 15:00Yeah, I can see that. I'm looking at images right now.
- 15:05I did. But I did play Legends in WrestleMania. I do remember that
- 15:09because I know the first thing I noticed was like with it because I picked
- 15:11the Andre, I knewho Andre was. I was introduced to it a lot
- 15:16of old school wrestlers because of this, which does another thing with like wrestling
- 15:18video game, you get introduced to a whole like if you don't know like
- 15:22if you don't know this wrestler and you you you learn about them in the
- 15:26wrestling video game. It kind of expands your repertoire. I think this was
- 15:31also one of the first games to have Andre the Giant as Andre the Giant
- 15:35really, I think, I'm not positive. I know like Fire Pro Wrestling
- 15:41had characters who were based off of which I have a Fire Pro Wrestling.
- 15:48Yeah, that game does have a lot of potential. I cannot figure out
- 15:52how to play it. Fire Pro Wrestling too is a lot better, is
- 15:56it? Yeah? Okay, I have I have the first one. Okay,
- 16:00again, not to keep going back to Kene Omega. It was because
- 16:03it had to the new Japan roster. I wanted it for my PlayStation.
- 16:07Well. Fire Pro Wrestling two for PS two is still I think one of
- 16:11the best ones. Okay. Actually I'm thinking of Fire Pro Wrestling World.
- 16:15Okay, yeah, that's on That is on PS four. Okay, I
- 16:18never played that one. I can't mate. You know what, if you're
- 16:22listening to this message, me tell me how I'm supposed to play this game.
- 16:26I can't figure it out. I do like the arkadi graphics that it
- 16:30has. I just I just can't figure it out. Well. New Japan
- 16:34came up with a wrestling game four n sixty four at the same time as
- 16:40No Way Out, which I also have, but the entire thing is in
- 16:45Japanese. So was it Wrestle Kingdom? Yes, okay, all right,
- 16:49the first one? Yes, okay, so I think they came out with
- 16:52two. Okay, so I would take like my phone because I got it
- 16:56somewhat recently, but I would take my phone and put the trains later up
- 17:00so I would be able to tell who was who and what was being said.
- 17:03Okay, I know. Yeah, I haven't played that one. I
- 17:07did. I did sort of research it a little bit because so I was
- 17:14one of my one of my top five favorite wrestlers of all time. It's
- 17:17mitsu Har Mazawa and he is in that game. He's he wears, He's
- 17:22Emmial Green Silver. Hanson's also in Yeah. Yes, Stan Hansen is huge
- 17:27in Japan. Yeah, like just and he and and like if you like
- 17:32JBL, you'll love Stan Hansen because you can like I was introduced to JBL
- 17:40as a kid, I've been the clothesline from Hell all of that. I
- 17:45get older as to what I've said on this brogram. Before I get I
- 17:48get shown Japanese wrestling through Kenney Omega because there's Gocad in them. Then I
- 17:55start saying, Oh, there's this whole new world out there with this,
- 17:57and then I find Stan Hansen with Bruiser Birdie. I'm wearing my Bruiser Birdie
- 18:02T shirt right now, and I see where JBL got a lot of his
- 18:08inspiration for. Yeah, he took a lot of inspiration from Stan Hansen.
- 18:15But yeah, like wrestling, video games just in general are they are.
- 18:21They're a great way to introduce people to different different wrestlers. Like I said,
- 18:26with the Legends of Wrestlemaniam, I knew Andre, I knew Hulk,
- 18:30I knew the Ultimate Warrior, and I knew Sergeant Slaughter and Jake excuse me,
- 18:36Jake the Snake and them. But there's a whole host of people that
- 18:38I didn't I really wasn't. I didn't know that much about People are gonna
- 18:42hate me for this, but I was like, what nine at the time,
- 18:47I don't know when this game came out. Maybe I was a little
- 18:51older than that. Two thousand and nine, so I was thirteen, and
- 18:56that's where I was introduced to the road. Did you say Legends of WrestleMania
- 19:02came out in two thousand and nine, Yes, okay, the release date
- 19:04was March nineteenth, two thousand and nine. Okay, Well, then I
- 19:10am mistaken on my first Andrea Dagiina appearance. Okay, when was he?
- 19:15That would have been the Xbox game of WrestleMania twenty one. Oh okay,
- 19:22yeah, where it still has, at least in my opinion, one of
- 19:26the most unfortunate wordings of a sentence ever in a wrestling game. Which so
- 19:34Eric Bischoff is trying to get you ready for your WrestleMania experience. Yeah,
- 19:40okay, So he's bringing in all these wrestlers that you have to face to
- 19:45get ready. And so when Eric Bischoff is talking about Andre, he says,
- 19:51and I quote, I've literally had to go through hell to get this
- 19:56person. And then it's Andre. So you know, maybe maybe you don't
- 20:06take that take Yeah, yeah, maybe that's not a good note. Yeah,
- 20:11maybe maybe you don't go with that one. Yeah, I'm kind of
- 20:15good. I actually had that one. I never had an Xbox original Xbox.
- 20:19I had that copy of that game for Xbox for some reason, and
- 20:22I kept trying to get an original Xbox as a kid. My mom wouldn't
- 20:26go for it. She's like, oh, you already gotta play station.
- 20:29One of my biggest issues with that game is you would have to do a
- 20:33creator wrestler to do the story mode. Okay, but your creator wrestler only
- 20:37gets X amount of stats, which is fine, that's how it works now.
- 20:42But your very first wrestler won't get past like sixty eight overall. So
- 20:51then your next wrestler, Like, if you want a better wrestler, yeah,
- 20:55you have to take the stats that you already used for the sixty eight
- 21:00and then your second one will be like a seventy five or a seventy three.
- 21:03That's a weird mechanic for a game. And in order to get better
- 21:07wrestlers, you have to play it more. And so I did the story
- 21:11mode like ten times. Oh my god, yeah, so I know I'm
- 21:15not mistaken on the I've literally gone through Hell Wow, that is that's a
- 21:23weird mechanic for a video game. Yeah, Like, and I'm listen one
- 21:27of some of my favorite games are Dark Souls. I love Dark the Dark
- 21:32Soul series, and it's a difficult game. It's a very difficult game,
- 21:37but it's like difficult to the point to where if I mess up, I
- 21:41know it's my fault. Yeah. With that, that's just making it hard
- 21:45for the sake of making it hard. Yes, Like that's I don't I
- 21:48don't agree what that was soever. But one thing that I absolutely missed from
- 21:52wrestling video games is to create a story. Oh yeah, Like I absolutely
- 21:57loved that. I had one story that I had spent I would say easily
- 22:03two and a half weeks working on no matches whatsoever. But the entire thing
- 22:11was Dusty Rhodes terrorizing Jerry the King Lawler. Why why not? True?
- 22:21Like the very first thing Jerry Lawler coming out, you know, under the
- 22:26Titan Tron and then you hear Dusty song start, you know, Oh Mary
- 22:32Come and Dream, and then he just falls from the top of the Titan
- 22:36Tron and lands on Jerry Lawler and that's where it begins. And then you
- 22:41know, eventually later on you have Jerry Lawler who has had this huge mental
- 22:47breakdown, and you know you could do the backstage segments where you get you
- 22:52know, you have two individuals, let's say Dusty Roads and Jerry Lawler and
- 22:56Dusty Rhods will then take Jerry Lawler and throw them into a car and it
- 23:00hits the windshield and it cracks. Okay, but you could also do it
- 23:04to where it was only Jerry Lawler. So now in my story, Jerry
- 23:10Lawler has had such a bad mental break that he's beating himself up. You're
- 23:17just gonna give it that you gave you a PTSD an here's a cow bell.
- 23:21Yeah, And it was one of the most brilliant things I had ever
- 23:26created in a story, because then it goes after that, like Jerry Lawler's
- 23:32in the back and he's sitting on a couch and it's like he's talking to
- 23:36a psychiatrist or psychologist, and really all it is is Earl Hebner. And
- 23:40so then I have Earl Hebner say why are you talking to me? I'm
- 23:42not a doctor, I'm a referee. And yeah, it was just yeah,
- 23:48that's that's it's great, that's a that's awesome. We made Cowboy Bob
- 23:52Orton be this like Jerry Actric who didn't remember anything who just thought he was
- 23:57at a retirement community and kept forgetting that he was in a match, and
- 24:02all he would ever say was jello cup. Oh, that's great, that
- 24:10is that is great, all right. If you if you want to talk
- 24:12about your favorite wrestling video game, you can email us to grow Out ninety
- 24:15five at gmail dot com. You can also message the Facebook page, and
- 24:18a lot of people have been engaging on the Facebook page and we appreciate it
- 24:22you share it. We are going to stop right there. When we come
- 24:26back, we are actually going to have a discussion on different professional wrestling styles.
- 24:32So stay tuned. It's time for more of the grill out here.
- 24:45It's Hollywood Jeff Petty. Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen to the Grill Ounce.
- 24:51My name is Hollywood Jeff Petty. I'm your host. My two co
- 24:53hosts are Josh Cole, Bye bye, coming to you from the past,
- 25:00in the future, yes, yes, recording times and then the rating and
- 25:10defending Grill Outs Predictions Champion, the Reflection of Perfection Jason Likins. Was Josh
- 25:17even still on the show at this point because I've decided to keep him here?
- 25:22Yeah? Oh god, So we just went through an entire discussion about
- 25:26wrestling video games and how are they playing to the wrestling world. Another discussion
- 25:30that I've been wanting to have on the show for quite some time, even
- 25:33before the first episode. This was kind of being pitched around a little bit
- 25:38amongst the network is different wrestling styles. Now, when people think of professional
- 25:47wrestling, they think, you know, people who are not professional wrestling fans,
- 25:51they think of professional wrestling, they think of, you know, some
- 25:52guy hitting another dude with a chair and this and that, and you know,
- 25:56pulling punches and all that. It's a lot more complex than that.
- 26:00Yeah, there's a lot more different styles than that in the world of professional
- 26:03wrestling. Yeah. You one that we are exposed to a lot here in
- 26:10the United States is what I basically call the WWE style. Yes, it's
- 26:15a lot more softer, not that that's a bad thing, it's a lot
- 26:19more uh grandiose, I guess, like with the presentation of it, with
- 26:23all the all the lights and the music and the pyro and everything, you
- 26:29don't have the hard hittingness that you do. And there's people who are you
- 26:33know who who follow the Wrestling Observer newsletter religiously that do or that are not
- 26:40fans of that style of professional wrestling, but in my opinion, it works.
- 26:44It brings in a lot of money. Yeah, I mean different strokes
- 26:48for different folks. Yes, absolutely. I'm not saying there's any one right
- 26:52or wrong style no of professional wrestling. You know, it all plays into
- 26:56a part that is professional wrestle. Yeah. And you'll have some wrestling shows
- 27:02that will have the same style from beginning to end, right. Then you'll
- 27:07have some wrestling shows that will have a variety. In my opinion, I
- 27:10prefer wrestling shows like that. They have different varieties that will have, you
- 27:15know, your hard hitting match, your submission match, your comedy match,
- 27:18and they'll even have maybe a hardcore match or two in there or what some
- 27:22people now have dubbed it. And it's been like this for years. Death
- 27:26matches me personally rules yea. For me. Personally, I'm not that big
- 27:33of a fan of death matches. I don't knock anybody that does. I'm
- 27:36actually in a Facebook group of death match fans because my brother's a fan of
- 27:41it. It's not I will watch it from time to time, but it's
- 27:47kind of to me. I don't want to see every single I don't want
- 27:49to see exploding stuff every single match, Like I want it's got to be
- 27:55special. It can't, like it's got to be a novelty. Almost all
- 27:59the time loses its impact. It's like it's a scripted sport. Why are
- 28:04you doing that to your body that much? Yeah? And also really deathmatch
- 28:08wrestling again, nothing against them, you know, And we're talking mainly a
- 28:11combat Zone wrestling GCW promotions such as that. It is sort of an underground
- 28:18thing. It's sort of like the counterculture within within wrestling. It's like punk
- 28:22rock almost. That's the best way I can I can describe it to people
- 28:26who are not as big of a wrestling fan that are, you know,
- 28:30listening to the show, Like, hey, you know, these guys kind
- 28:32of know what they're talking about. I think what you combined all of our
- 28:36years of being professional wrestling fans, it's probably fifty or sixty years altogether amongst
- 28:41the three of us. Well, I mean over over thirty of those are
- 28:42going to be me. So yeah, I'm almost I turned thirty next year.
- 28:48Yeah, I'm a young and well, Josh, what's your favorite like
- 28:52style of wrestling? Like, do you have a style per se that you
- 28:57find more enjoy than others, Like I really enjoy like British chain wrestling,
- 29:07like Stephen ring Regal was one of my favorites of all time to watch.
- 29:11I not necessarily a favorite, but as long as you can tell me a
- 29:15great story at whatever style, it doesn't really matter as long, Yeah,
- 29:22as long as you have a coherent story within the match, like whether that
- 29:26be you know you're playing off of an injury, you're playing off of stuff
- 29:30that you know, outside elements that have led up to this match that are
- 29:34kind of making callbacks to it. I always like it when there's like a
- 29:37little callback to a previous event within the wrestling storyline. That and also like
- 29:45if I can watch it in that moment believe what I'm seeing is you know
- 29:49real? You got me. If I'm seeing stuff and it's like uh,
- 29:53then I'm out of it. Just you just quickly just check out. I
- 29:59hate see moves that. It's like like some of them where people just have
- 30:03to stand there and wait for the other person to do their thing, Like
- 30:06why yeah, a quick, quick little example of that. Actually, So
- 30:11for me personally, I don't live and die by the sword with Dave Meltzer.
- 30:17I just don't I've said it before in the program, he is a
- 30:21very good uh like, he's he's a very like if you go back and
- 30:26you follow all, you watch all the five star matches that he has or
- 30:30whatever, it's a good way to get get exposed, get introduced to to
- 30:37Japanese professional wrestling. One example of that, though, and it was a
- 30:41five star match, it was rated one, was Jericho and Kenny at Wrestling
- 30:45Kingdom twelve. I think the double main event, Kenny's going for the terminator
- 30:53dive to the outside. Jericho, who doesn't look like he's you know,
- 30:59he really it didn't look like he was selling much. He had his head
- 31:03up, he was looking he was waiting for a spot. Yeah. Because
- 31:06of that one, and maybe this is me nitpicking, because of that one
- 31:08little spot right there, I will not give it a five star match.
- 31:12And I'm a big Kenny Omega fan. I think I absolutely hate seeing is
- 31:18double knee spots in the corner where the person who is taking the move is
- 31:23holding themselves like waiting for the person to jump and then hit them there,
- 31:29but they are holding themselves up like the only way that this is happening is
- 31:33the fact that your arms and Hanes are holding the ropes and you are holding
- 31:37yourself there waiting. Yeah, like in for lack of a better term and
- 31:44k fabe terms, why are you holding yourself up waiting for them? Yeah?
- 31:48Yeah, it just it just looks weird. Yeah, it really because
- 31:52with professional wrestling, I don't like saying fake because it's not fake. It
- 31:59is predetermined, it is scripted. Yes, it is choreographed. We can
- 32:04say all that it is not fake, but then you see stuff like that,
- 32:07like the example you just gave, and people will mean it. I
- 32:12look at this fake stuff, well, missus fake. Yeah. If you
- 32:14go back to our Chris Statlander interview where she said that, you know she
- 32:17was training to be a stunt woman, these are just these are stunt professionals,
- 32:22yes, putting on a stunt show. When they hit the mat,
- 32:28they're hitting the mat. It's not like they're hitting a pillow. No,
- 32:31like it's it's a hard surface. It just happens to have some spring in
- 32:36it. Yeah, and it's got a it's got a thin layer of padding
- 32:39on it, very thin, like maybe an inch maybe an inch. But
- 32:45that's also one reason why I really stick to enjoying technical wrestling because it's not
- 32:51a lot of high impact moves. It's a lot of chain wrestling. You
- 32:53know. I spent a lot of time doing amateur wrestling, which is pretty
- 32:58much chain wrestling. Yeah. Yeah, and people like Zach Saber Junior,
- 33:06Brian Danielson, Stephen Regel. I just always enjoyed watching another another one.
- 33:14Brett Hart. Yeah, he's another another great chain wrestler. Terrible talker.
- 33:17Oh, no charisma, none except for when he was really just kind of
- 33:22going hard there right before he for ww Yeah, when he was just speaking
- 33:25his mind. That was the best Brett Heart there was, exactly. I
- 33:30only ever really saw w C W bretttheart, so I never got a high
- 33:34opinion of themselves. God, is that is sad? Like that is that
- 33:43is really not good Brett Hart at all. Yeah, that's maybe the worst
- 33:46Brett Heart there is. Yeah, because like he had so much going on
- 33:50in his life and even terrible music. Yes, which fun fact, speaking
- 33:55of Bret Hart's music, not to go back to the last week's episode,
- 34:00all of the music talk. The riff for his opening song was actually I
- 34:05think that was a Jimmy Hart creation. Really, Yeah, I was listening
- 34:08to an interview he like I think it was a Peter Rosenberg was interviewing him
- 34:13and he was like he saw my brat hert Steme song and he was like,
- 34:15wait a minute, the opening to it. He's like, yeah,
- 34:19yeah, that that was I came up with that, Like, oh,
- 34:22okay, it's kind of cool. Jimmy Hart's all over the yeah, but
- 34:25no, like I'm I'm there with you on the chain wrestling. I do
- 34:30enjoy good chain wrestling. I like, you know, to me, too
- 34:34much of it can be can oversaturate a little bit. But if you can
- 34:37do it in a creative way like a Brian Danielson, like a Zach Saber
- 34:40Junior, I'm going to be invested in that. That's why I enjoy Japanese
- 34:46wrestling so much aka Putu Ressu because it just it does come off very real
- 34:55to me, Like it comes off almost like a shoot because like, you
- 35:00know, you're not pulling punches on the guy. You know you are legitimately
- 35:05trying like they're knocking each other out. It's just I it's it's much more
- 35:12hard hitting. It's harder on your body. Is so much harder on your
- 35:15body. I mean, if you if you listen to a Shinskan kno Kimora
- 35:19match, and you're like, oh, you know shin skant Knokimore, the
- 35:22King of strong Style. If you watch New Japan, that's pretty much every
- 35:25match. Yes, it's it's entertaining, that's great, and and and and
- 35:30it also falls under those those parameters of it. It does get a little
- 35:36oversaturated to that to that extent, but I just I don't know when I
- 35:40when I first saw Omega Okada one, that was my first first time I
- 35:46was I ever watched a Japanese wrestling match. I'd never I had heard about,
- 35:52you know, when we sent so and so to Japan so that they
- 35:54can work on this. So and so was in Japan to work on this
- 35:58when I first saw that, and you had your office Jason upstairs for me,
- 36:04I think, if memory serves me correct, I watched it. I
- 36:07immediately went upstairs and was telling you about it and talking about just how great
- 36:10of a match it was that I just watched. I have no idea who
- 36:13these two people are, and I was. I was hooked at that point
- 36:17with it. I don't get a chance to follow it nearly as much as
- 36:21I would like to, but it is still for me, it is my
- 36:25favorite style of professional wrestling. And also it just some of the like some
- 36:30people may complain about the production value, like not to get off of wrestling
- 36:35styles, but the production value of New Japan where it is like they don't
- 36:38go to all these grandiose arenas. They they will go to like it'd be
- 36:44like, you know, WWE doing a house show here at here at the
- 36:46coliseum, and they're going to oh no, not even at the Colisseum.
- 36:50They're going to do it at like the Marmett Rec Center and they're going to
- 36:53pack that, but then they're going to produce Monday Night rawll there. To
- 36:58me, it's got it's just got charm to it with that. Yeah,
- 37:01I mean, and you know, again this isn't wrestling styles, but even
- 37:07just the smaller shows that they're doing with New Japan, I mean they just
- 37:13have people coming out of like behind bleachers. Oh yeah, it's zero budget,
- 37:21but it's still just great to watch. And they're also they're very tradition
- 37:24heavy over there. It's just the culture of Japan in general. They like
- 37:30if they come like the Tokyo down for example, there will always be Wrestle
- 37:35Kingdom there. On January fourth, No matter what day of the week that
- 37:37falls on, there will always be Wrestle Kingdom there. Yeah, and it's
- 37:42just it's a traditional thing and it's going to be packed. Yeah, and
- 37:45it's going to be packed and day and Dave Melcher is going to give everything
- 37:49fifteen plus stars. Yeah. But but yeah, like and then they will
- 37:52go right across the hall, right across the road. I think I think
- 37:57it's uh Rio Goku Sumu Hall because that's where they do summa wrestling. They
- 38:00do do it in that same venue that you're talking about. No, no,
- 38:04exactly which one you're talking about. I think it's I can't remember the
- 38:07exact name of the venue, but it is a they do summa wrestling there,
- 38:10which is another huge thing with them. What are you going It's not
- 38:15Asaka Joe Hall isn't No No, Osaka Joe Hall is a it is sort
- 38:22of on the same level as the Tokyo do So because like, yeah,
- 38:27and that's another thing with Dominion. It will always be at Osaka Joe Hall,
- 38:30like it will always be in June beginning of June in Osaka Joe Hall.
- 38:36Josh is there a style of wrestling that you just absolutely refuse to watch
- 38:42mm hmm call on this one. Yeah, Well, I mean I'm just
- 38:47wonderful put them on the spot. Well, I'm trying to get us back
- 38:51to the Style company and that this also this this branching off. That's that's
- 38:58how my brain works as well. Yeah, I mean, I don't mind
- 39:01hardcore wrestling every now and then, but I think probably the deathmatch side of
- 39:07it probably that. Like I I don't mind a little bit of hardcore,
- 39:12but I don't. I mean, whenever people are stapling stuff to each other
- 39:17like a little bit is fine, yeah, but whenever you just have two
- 39:22people sitting in chairs across from each other and they're just using a stapler on
- 39:27each other as though they're punching. It just it's to me, it's cheap.
- 39:34I hate and I hate to say it that way. It to me,
- 39:36it just comes off it's very cheap. I listen, I'm not gonna
- 39:39go in there and have a staple gun put on. You know, I'm
- 39:44not doing that. I'll be honest. I'm a, for lack of a
- 39:47better term, I'm a whoosie when it comes to that point. But it
- 39:51just it comes off as cheap to me. There is a time and place
- 39:53for it. There's time and place for every every form of professional wrestling.
- 39:58But when it's constantly that, and but it's constantly that, it does dilute
- 40:02it. I don't mean to keep going back to that. Another thing is
- 40:05with like deathmatch fans, they are highly loyal to it, like they are
- 40:12rabbit almost for it. I mean that's fine. I think for me,
- 40:15it's it's like hell and a cell. Okay, once you make it a
- 40:21pay per view, you've lost it. It should never be that it's a
- 40:23stipulation, So you shouldn't have a death match unless the combatants in that the
- 40:30participants, they can't have a clean finish, you know, they just they're
- 40:36so much heat between the two that they just want to go out and kill
- 40:40each other. That's when you do it. You don't do it because oh
- 40:45hey, uh we gotta sell at this house tonight. I'm gonna hit you
- 40:50with a fluorescent light. Yeah. It's like why clip on X. The
- 40:54other day, two dudes are a top of scapa thing suit plucks each other
- 40:58off into a bed of bar brown that was suspended over a ring. It's
- 41:00like why again. It It's it's kind of like those kind of like how
- 41:08ECW was just, you know, just wild as could be, but the
- 41:15fans were just they loved it. They ate all of it up. But
- 41:19the thing is also with that, you're and again I hate to say this,
- 41:22I'm not trying to sound disrespectful with this, you are catering to those
- 41:25hardcore fans there, and that's part of the problem that happened with ECW.
- 41:30But the best thing with that then is whenever McK foley came in and he
- 41:35decided he was going to be the anti hardcore was so he would go in
- 41:37and just chain wrestle. Yeah, like it. You know, you have
- 41:43to have a little bit of stuff to create a great product. Not everything
- 41:46can be staple, gun, chair shot, hit you with a bowling ball.
- 41:52Yeah. So so here's here's my next question. This goes for both
- 41:54of you. What are your thoughts on comedy wrestling. I don't mind it,
- 42:00No, I think it's perfectly fine. I know how big, how
- 42:04big of a fan of you are of Toriana, but it has to be
- 42:06done in moderation. Yeah, you can't have every match like you can have
- 42:12one match that is extremely comedy heavy, like let's say you have Toriano versus
- 42:15Colt Cabana. Sure, but if you have six matches back to back to
- 42:21back to back to back to back of all like that, then the first
- 42:24one might be okay, but then you've gotten all the laughs out. Yeah,
- 42:30it's like and and that also that goes back to like them repeating spots
- 42:36throughout throughout a show. Aw actually did that. I can't remember what the
- 42:39spot was, but it was on Dynasty. I think I had something to
- 42:43do with the with the announced table. There was just three different matches that
- 42:45had the same spot in it, and it's like it just crossed over too
- 42:50much for me, and I'm like, and all in all, Dynasty was
- 42:53a great show, but that one little part it's gone. And maybe it's
- 42:58maybe it's me nitpicking. It's kind of like the Chris Jericho keny Omega match
- 43:01into Tokyo dome. I thought that was a perfect match until I saw that.
- 43:06When I saw that, I immediately took away five stars. There was
- 43:08an old w c W pay per view for the life of me, I
- 43:13don't remember which one, but three matches in a row someone came out interfered
- 43:19disqualification. Three matches in a row, the same finish uncreative and lazy.
- 43:25I mean, that's that's the best way to put that. I'll say.
- 43:30With the comedy, like, I don't mind it if it's done well,
- 43:34like for example the Samy's and Johnny Knoxville Mattress. That was good. I
- 43:37like that. But when these in some of these indie events and they try
- 43:39to get you to believe stuff that's just completely unbelievable, like shooting a gun
- 43:44with your hand. You see that. You see stuff like that a lot
- 43:51in DDT. I think part of it also depends on how out there it
- 43:58is, Like whenever you have the the tag team that did like the snake
- 44:01Charming and then caused everyone in the locker room to come out and they all
- 44:06danced a sugar hill game and then there's one rather large individual who starts stripping.
- 44:10You know, if you're going to do it fully commit to yeah,
- 44:15you know it's yeah, no like and yeah you got everybody involved on that
- 44:21one. It's there, there is, I mean, there is a time
- 44:22and place for it. And the Orange Cassidy bits are good. Yeah,
- 44:27Orange Cassie, I think I think he's very I would even I wouldn't say
- 44:30Orange is even fully a comedy wrestler. Yeah, he like blends it.
- 44:35Yeah, like ar truths. I would one hunt now Ron killings, no,
- 44:39Ron Killings, And TNA was not a comedy wrestler. And if you
- 44:43have never if you've never listened to the promos that he was cutting in DNA,
- 44:49please go watch them. They like it is night and day to what
- 44:52he is. Also the guy who's been like forty for forty years. Yeah,
- 44:55he doesn't he does not age at all. He's like he's an fifties
- 45:00I know that. But our truth, I would say, our truth one
- 45:02hundred percent is a comedy wrestler now yeah, yeah, yeah. In Cold
- 45:08Cabana, one hundred percent of comedy wrestler. Now yeah, Toriano, I
- 45:12mean one hundred percent of comedy wrestler. And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 45:16That's that's that's your stick, that's what you know. That's what you've done
- 45:20to get over with the crowd. Well, I mean even in Stephen Regal
- 45:24matches, he would throw comedy in there. You know, he'd be getting
- 45:29back in the ring after you know, he's in the face of a fan
- 45:31and he's getting back in the ring, but then he trips over the middle
- 45:35rope. Yeah, you know, it's it's just it's the spots that make
- 45:38everything because you have this really serious wrestler and then they do a comedy spot.
- 45:44Yeah, I mean it does. It plays there. And also to
- 45:50me, Regal real quick, Regal is very very underrated one. Yeah,
- 45:58highly underrated. It wrestler should have had should have had at least one ragin
- 46:04with He was never world champion, was he? No, he should have
- 46:07at least had one rain at least WW. I don't know about else.
- 46:09No, he was. I mean he wasn't heavyweight champion and WCW. The
- 46:14most he got there was TV. Most he gotten WWE was intercontinental. Yeah
- 46:19that's that's also. I don't think he needed the title. No, well
- 46:22you got a point there. I just felt like he just he's one of
- 46:25those individuals. It's kind of like how Razor was just one of those individuals
- 46:30or even Jacob Snake. See I got other ones that are popping up in
- 46:34my head who were not world champion. But excuse me, but we're world
- 46:37champion material. And yeah that also, like with Regal showing, you know,
- 46:44the little little comedy bits here and there, like Sammy's Ain doing the
- 46:47comedy match with Johnny Knoxville, not to go back to Kenny Kenny's you know,
- 46:52his little spots that he would do with like Toy when he had Toriano
- 46:55in the ring, or some of the stuff that he would do in D
- 46:58d T. That to me shows a very very well rounded wrestler, Like
- 47:02they can kind of do what they can, kind of go in any direction
- 47:06they need to. I don't see Stephen Regal doing death matches. No,
- 47:10well, I mean he did a he did like a parking lot brawl with
- 47:15who would become fit Fendly? Oh was that in WCW Yes, Oh okay,
- 47:21I didn't know that. I mean yeah, like they gave each other
- 47:23color the hard way. Oh yeah? Oh man, all right, because
- 47:28I mean you get an English guy and an Irish guy. Yeah, they
- 47:30they are not fans of each other. Yeah, they are not fans of
- 47:32each other. All right. We're going to end it there, Ladies and
- 47:37gentlemen, when we come back, we will have one this day in wrestling
- 47:40history in the main event. Stay tuned once again. Here's Hollywood zef Peg.
- 47:55Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen to the grill. Ounce. I am
- 47:59your host Toleywood Jeff Betty and I am joined by Josh Cole Bye bye yeah.
- 48:07And then our current reigning and defending We're a lot Predictions champion and the
- 48:15crowd goes mild for the reflection of perfection. Jason Likens yep, just throws
- 48:22that in there all right on this day and wrestling history Day. June second,
- 48:39nineteen eighty three. At New Japan Pro Wrestling's IWGP League, HAULK Cogan
- 48:45won the first ever International Wrestling at Grand Prix Tournament, defeating Antonio Noki by
- 48:50knockout in the final, becoming the first holder of the original version of the
- 48:54Iwgpweight Championship. I'll work for my brother, not much less. Hh do
- 49:01you know something? And Noki is not going to work for me, brother
- 49:06Noki Aka to Crimson Gin Yeah. June second, two thousand and four,
- 49:10It's an NWATNA weekly pay per view taping in Nashville, Tennessee. Jeff Jared
- 49:15defeated Ron Killings. There's that name, Rass, Harris aj Styles and Raven
- 49:20and a King of the Mountain match to win the NBA World's Heavyweight Championship for
- 49:24a third time. King of the Mountain was was was a good concept.
- 49:29For TNA. It gives TNA its own identity. But did TNA become the
- 49:34TNA, Like did Jeff Jarrett become the TNA hul Cogan? Pretty nice?
- 49:37Yeah? Yeah yeah, and then they brought in the real hul Cogan.
- 49:43Everything went well for TNL, almost like it. How about that? Maybe
- 49:51that was why his theme song was like that, Jeff Jared's because he was
- 49:53just warning everybody about what was to come in in the upcoming years. But
- 49:58I mean, speaking of imclusion, Jeff, what happened on back in twenty
- 50:02fourteen June second, twenty fourteen, The Shield implodes on ww rawl. One
- 50:10night after the Shield Dean Amber, seth Rawlins and Roman Raines defeated Evolution,
- 50:15Triple H, Randy Orton, and Batista and in an elimination rules match.
- 50:19At payback, Batista quit the group and Triple H promised there would be a
- 50:23Plan B. The plan was revealed at the end of the June second episode
- 50:28of Raw when seth Rawlins shockingly blindsided his Shield co Hurts with vicious steel chair
- 50:34shots as Triple H and Randy Orton watched one from ringside, Big moment in
- 50:40history or that one? Yeah, I mean really all three. Maybe not
- 50:45so much to say one with DNA no, but I mean I would think
- 50:49maybe the IWGP Heavyweight Champion it might be important. Yeah, that one was
- 50:53kind of in. That one's got some importance to it. And then of
- 50:57course you know the shield imploding one June second, twenty fourteen. Moving on

- 55:35to Buffalo Wild Wings, check it out. See what you think you know,
- 55:38or go to another show pay for it. Yeah, I mean support
- 55:43local wrestling. I know you hear a lot of bills that support local business,
- 55:45but it's the same thing with professional wrestling. Go support local wrestling.
- 55:49You can go there. Here's the thing you've been to. If you've been
- 55:52to the WWW show, you've been to an aw show, you've been to
- 55:53a TNA Ring of Honor, whatever, you don't get that much access to
- 55:58the wrestlers. Correct, Yes, at a local show, well unless you
- 56:01you know, sneak in the back and then you're getting kicked out a VIP
- 56:05package. Yeah yeah, one of those, one of those ones, more
- 56:08legal, yeah, exactly. Yeah. But a lot of these local wrestling
- 56:14shows will have meet and greets, like just yesterday for Bashing Beckley for they
- 56:21had a three hour meet and greet with so many different wrestlers there. And
- 56:24it's not just legends and national wrestlers, it's also local wrestlers. I've gotten
- 56:30a chance to actually sit there and speak to local wrestlers such as Rocky Rage
- 56:34and huff Manly. Long before we started doing this show, I would,
- 56:37you know, my brothers and I would go there and we would we would
- 56:39get a chance to sit there and talk to the wrestlers. It is a
- 56:44great way to get introduced to professional wrestling. If you have a friend who
- 56:47is a big professional wrestling fan, try to talk to them into going,
- 56:52Hey, go with me, help me with this. I want to get
- 56:53into this, but I don't know how to go about it. Even some
- 56:55of these festivals have free shows like this one coming up on blue Field,
- 57:00Putt in mc County, Ferris and wrestling on it coming up yeah, the
- 57:02other ones, Yeah exactly. Like there's just you know, there is a
- 57:06lot of wrestling out there. Just go support local wrestling. That's that is,
- 57:10that is how, that is what all this boils down to. If
